Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Continue our coverage here at Salona Accelerate and of course
- 0:03Speaker 1: one of my favorite guests and old.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Time friend is mister John Wu coming in for Avalanche.
- 0:07Speaker 3: How are you, Oh, I'm great, and thank you for
- 0:09Speaker 3: having me. I always love talking to you. As you know,
- 0:11Speaker 3: we've been talking for six years, years now years. You're
- 0:15Speaker 3: one of the few that got it in the very
- 0:18Speaker 3: beginning the integration of traditional enterprises with that of the
- 0:22Speaker 3: new blockchain world.
- 0:23Speaker 1: I didn't think it was a special gift or anything.
- 0:25Speaker 1: I think it was obvious what was happening.
- 0:27Speaker 2: But thank you.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Listen, John, A lot happening with Avalanche. You guys have
- 0:32Speaker 1: been doing a lot of new partnership's announcements. Tell me
- 0:35Speaker 1: what you're excited about right now.
- 0:37Speaker 3: With that line, Well, there's so many things I'm excited about.
- 0:39Speaker 3: But this summer when you see FIFA World Cup, a
- 0:44Speaker 3: lot of their right to buy tickets and a lot
- 0:46Speaker 3: of their loyalty stuff and tickets in general are going
- 0:50Speaker 3: to be done on an Avalanche blockchain. Well, I think
- 0:53Speaker 3: that's going to be huge. Yeah, there's a whole class
- 0:56Speaker 3: I call it loyalty type stuff that is also the
- 1:00Speaker 3: helping on Avalanche. Even though Avalanche is also very well
- 1:03Speaker 3: known for traditional finance and bridging the gap between crypto
- 1:07Speaker 3: and trudi finance. We have a whole category of loyalty stuff,
- 1:10Speaker 3: whether it's the Cleveland Cavaliers of Detroit Pistons taking advantage
- 1:15Speaker 3: of the blockchain to enhance their either payments to stable
- 1:19Speaker 3: coins or their better management engagement of their users.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Yep, yeah, Well, I think you know, when you look
- 1:25Speaker 1: at mainstream of blockchain, which is what's happening now, we're
- 1:29Speaker 1: seeing it in the sports arena. Obviously we're going to
- 1:32Speaker 1: I think see it now in probably mainstream brands.
- 1:36Speaker 2: And that brings me to a question.
- 1:37Speaker 1: And you and I've really kind of tumbled with this
- 1:39Speaker 1: a lot around how mainstream brands are going to adopt
- 1:43Speaker 1: into crypto or blockchain in general. Stable coins might be
- 1:48Speaker 1: the opportunity. When you look at stable coins right now.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Obviously clarity we're getting new language literally as we're talking today,
- 1:56Speaker 1: that clarity in itself is going through. It changes the
- 2:00Speaker 1: framework of a traditional investor being able to get some yields.
- 2:03Speaker 1: We'll talk about that a second, but what do you
- 2:05Speaker 1: think big brands and stable coins, how do you think
- 2:08Speaker 1: that's going.
- 2:08Speaker 3: To marry stable coin, especially after the Genius Act, was
- 2:11Speaker 3: a huge unlocked not just for traditional finance, but for
- 2:15Speaker 3: all of these different consumer brands. All of a sudden,
- 2:18Speaker 3: it's like you have this more efficient rail, and this
- 2:23Speaker 3: more efficient rail increases the velocity of money, allows a
- 2:27Speaker 3: team who actually owns the stadium as well, some that
- 2:30Speaker 3: can use stable coins to incentivize their own engaged and
- 2:35Speaker 3: further engage their users, but also let it use it
- 2:37Speaker 3: to go buy the hot dog or the swag at
- 2:40Speaker 3: the store and give pass back some of the savings
- 2:43Speaker 3: right to the user. So I think regulation has gone
- 2:48Speaker 3: to the point where consumers now will see the benefits,
- 2:51Speaker 3: even if they don't see it right away or directly,
- 2:54Speaker 3: or it's abstracted away. The merchants will benefit and they
- 2:58Speaker 3: will pass some of that on.
- 3:00Speaker 1: And Clarity is most likely going to solidify that as
- 3:04Speaker 1: it goes into the Senate this week hopefully next week.
- 3:07Speaker 1: On markup, do you think a brand this year I
- 3:11Speaker 1: want a prediction.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Do you think a.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Brand this year will launch its own stable coin? Now,
- 3:15Speaker 1: I'm not thinking about Western Union. I'm talking about a
- 3:18Speaker 1: real brand that that's not a finance brand.
- 3:21Speaker 3: What do you think that's not a finance, but not
- 3:22Speaker 3: a finance brand. I do, ok. Absolutely, I think there
- 3:26Speaker 3: will be some brand that has massive distribution and instead
- 3:33Speaker 3: of having Starbucks as points as, they may have a
- 3:38Speaker 3: stable coin that beds loyalty. I mean, a tokenized asset
- 3:44Speaker 3: is better than a traditional digitized asset because you can
- 3:47Speaker 3: bed rules of engagement absolutely in it. So the asset
- 3:52Speaker 3: itself is no longer just a dumb asset. It's actually intelligent.
- 3:55Speaker 3: It talks up, it can embed the rules of exchanging,
- 4:00Speaker 3: holding as well as you know, incentivizing ye all in
- 4:05Speaker 3: the coin itself well.
- 4:07Speaker 1: And the opportunity I think there for brands to really
- 4:09Speaker 1: kind of leverage into what's happening in blockchain.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Just open so I will have you one thing. Everything
- 4:14Speaker 3: I just said depends on how tokens are classified in
- 4:17Speaker 3: the cloudity for sure, But I do think stable coins
- 4:21Speaker 3: will in brand perspective, We'll be using stable coins.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Yeah, a lot.
- 4:25Speaker 3: But once you can take Clarity Act throw it on
- 4:28Speaker 3: top of stable coins and make it clear what the
- 4:30Speaker 3: rules are, suddenly you have your own stable coin that
- 4:34Speaker 3: can embed slightly different rules.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:36Speaker 1: I think the brands are going to get very creative
- 4:38Speaker 1: on this, for sure.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Let's talk.
- 4:40Speaker 1: There's been a lot of news going on with Canton.
- 4:44Speaker 1: We look at this as a bank to bank private chain.
- 4:48Speaker 1: There's you know, we've gone back and forth with their CEO.
- 4:51Speaker 1: But I'm curious, is Avalanche maybe the one that is
- 4:55Speaker 1: poised to actually take on Canton.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Yes, yes, Lanche, I think Avalanche, as you know from
- 5:02Speaker 3: day one, we've been working on this, Avalanche will be
- 5:06Speaker 3: to call it, the default infrastructure in the future for
- 5:09Speaker 3: all digital assets. And it's because it's interoperable. You can
- 5:14Speaker 3: create your own l one on Avalanche connected to the
- 5:17Speaker 3: sea chain the Avalanche and then move its EVM compatible
- 5:21Speaker 3: so easily move it around the entire crypto.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Which is what makes that an advantage.
- 5:25Speaker 3: This is a huge advantage. We believed in the permissions
- 5:28Speaker 3: world from day one. Now, what do they also say?
- 5:31Speaker 3: Copying is the greatest form of flattery. If you look
- 5:34Speaker 3: at what Canton is about, kudos them. They've done a
- 5:37Speaker 3: great job, you know, but they were DLT disparate little pockets.
- 5:44Speaker 3: They had to create interconnection, and then they created their
- 5:47Speaker 3: forget what it's called, but it's effectively our sea chain.
- 5:50Speaker 3: So they reversed, engineered interesting into what Avalanche started with
- 5:55Speaker 3: the architecture from day one study.
- 5:58Speaker 2: That so okay.
- 6:00Speaker 1: So when you think about companies that would come to
- 6:04Speaker 1: Avalanche or to Canton, the side that you guys really offer,
- 6:09Speaker 1: I think is much more flexible and gives major companies
- 6:14Speaker 1: a lot more options. Beyond that, what would was there
- 6:17Speaker 1: anything else that you would say it would draw in
- 6:20Speaker 1: a major finance company or a major platform or a
- 6:24Speaker 1: major fortune five hundred that would say, Okay, that's another
- 6:27Speaker 1: reason I should choose Avalanche.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Especially in finance, there's this tension when we do deals
- 6:34Speaker 3: with traditional financial companies asset back asset managers or or
- 6:38Speaker 3: banks or fintech companies. They want control on one hand
- 6:44Speaker 3: because they have compliance needs. They want to know who's
- 6:47Speaker 3: in the network, who they're dealing with. They need privacy.
- 6:51Speaker 3: At the same time, they at some point want connectivity
- 6:54Speaker 3: for distribution to see the entire ecosystem. That's the tension
- 6:58Speaker 3: that they're constant fighting. An Avalanche L one gives them
- 7:04Speaker 3: their purpose built L one that they can control, call
- 7:07Speaker 3: it the privacy or the necessary participants KYB KYC at
- 7:14Speaker 3: three levels, the transaction level, the network level, the smart
- 7:19Speaker 3: contract level, and then when the rules are clear and
- 7:22Speaker 3: when they're comfortable they can attach to other l ones
- 7:27Speaker 3: or to the main open permission less chain of Avalanche
- 7:31Speaker 3: and then also move it to Ethereum or other places.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Because it's a lot more flexibility for much more flexibility.
- 7:37Speaker 1: So let's talk about clarity and the impact is going
- 7:40Speaker 1: to have on the Avalanche ecosystem. You guys have a
- 7:42Speaker 1: lot of new projects in development across the ecosystem right now.
- 7:47Speaker 1: How much of an impact do you think clarity is
- 7:49Speaker 1: really going to have on the avax ecoste.
- 7:52Speaker 3: It'll take a lot of the test net stuff or
- 7:57Speaker 3: into main net live thing. We saw that with Genius. Oh,
- 8:02Speaker 3: we were thinking about this. We want to understand the technology,
- 8:05Speaker 3: but we're not clear. Oh now stable coins are allowed. Yeah,
- 8:10Speaker 3: let's move to the next level. So as soon as
- 8:13Speaker 3: the clarity comes from that, you're going to see that
- 8:17Speaker 3: another wave of development happening.
- 8:20Speaker 2: A lot of perps moving into the market.
- 8:23Speaker 1: So obviously we've seen activity with X stocks on.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Then you look at pre stocks.
- 8:30Speaker 1: I mean there's a lot of opportunity here and the
- 8:32Speaker 1: pickup seems to be coming toward mainstream meaning mainstream investors
- 8:36Speaker 1: figuring this out. What are you guys doing around that
- 8:40Speaker 1: ecosystem right now.
- 8:41Speaker 3: I mean I just met the X stocks founder and
- 8:44Speaker 3: CEO last night. I think they're doing a great job.
- 8:47Speaker 3: You know, I believe you can bridge x stocks over
- 8:51Speaker 3: to Avalanche as well. But there's a company called Denari
- 8:56Speaker 3: that is on Avalanche and they are basically in the
- 8:59Speaker 3: pub like the like Apple public stocks, they've tokenized it overseas,
- 9:06Speaker 3: allowing people outside of the US who you know in
- 9:08Speaker 3: the US and I can get access to Apple stock
- 9:11Speaker 3: right but they have close to a billion dollars of
- 9:15Speaker 3: TVL now of traditional public equities in the US that
- 9:20Speaker 3: they allow other people to buy and sell in a
- 9:24Speaker 3: regulatory compliant way, so I Canari's another one in that
- 9:28Speaker 3: same vein that's doing this. I think in the long run,
- 9:33Speaker 3: you as an investor, or me as a retail person,
- 9:36Speaker 3: or someone else as a retail person, they're gonna want
- 9:39Speaker 3: the product and not necessarily care who is providing He.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Yeah, John, I want to now that we're talking, because
- 9:47Speaker 1: you look at the emerging tech, especially on the finance side.
- 9:50Speaker 2: That's easy.
- 9:51Speaker 1: I think it fits with almost every chain out there.
- 9:55Speaker 1: But you look at the opportunity of a decentralized social
- 9:58Speaker 1: media platform. This is the one thing that is missing
- 10:01Speaker 1: across all of blockchain. I know, you guys have some
- 10:04Speaker 1: things that are out there, arena. I've been in and
- 10:07Speaker 1: out of it, you know, et cetera.
- 10:10Speaker 2: What do you think.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Do you think we're going to see a major come
- 10:13Speaker 1: into the market soon?
- 10:15Speaker 3: Listen. The reason why a social network on blockchain's permissionless blockchain,
- 10:22Speaker 3: sure it's very hard to do, is because it's permissionless.
- 10:26Speaker 3: You know. Cell sovereignty is a big reason why people
- 10:29Speaker 3: go into crypto and blockchain. If you can move your
- 10:33Speaker 3: data and own your data and move it from one
- 10:36Speaker 3: place to another, then you know, you don't get the
- 10:40Speaker 3: lock in. So then therefore the platform doesn't allow the
- 10:43Speaker 3: network effect to happen, right. I mean, there have been
- 10:45Speaker 3: many times where people want to use a traditional social
- 10:48Speaker 3: media but another one comes and they would like to
- 10:50Speaker 3: move their credentials and their history and their graph to
- 10:54Speaker 3: another one. They can't. That's a web to thing, I
- 10:57Speaker 3: do think, though. I know there's some creative trying to
- 11:00Speaker 3: figure out how to create network effects social media. You
- 11:03Speaker 3: need a network effect for sure, and there are people
- 11:05Speaker 3: trying to figure out creative ways to do it. It's just
- 11:08Speaker 3: that's one category that's very hard in a permissionless world.
- 11:12Speaker 1: Do you think that uh, Elon has a beat on.
- 11:16Speaker 2: This or no.
- 11:17Speaker 3: If anyone can do it, it's Elon, right. I would
- 11:20Speaker 3: never count him out in anything.
- 11:22Speaker 1: I mean, it's interesting to see what he's trying to launch.
- 11:24Speaker 1: We'll see if the finance products start to work over there.
- 11:26Speaker 3: But he starts with a huge you know, his base, yeah,
- 11:31Speaker 3: his base.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:31Speaker 3: So he's got a huge base and he can build
- 11:33Speaker 3: in the finance part as you mentioned, like the neo
- 11:36Speaker 3: bank components to it or whatever. That's a different lock
- 11:40Speaker 3: in than.
- 11:41Speaker 2: It is it is.
- 11:42Speaker 1: I I kind of push back on it a little bit,
- 11:44Speaker 1: only in the sense that I worry about having my
- 11:48Speaker 1: money in something that also has my personality, my opinions.
- 11:54Speaker 2: My you know, it kind of ties other elements of
- 11:56Speaker 2: my life.
- 11:56Speaker 3: This isn't typically part of the reason why I came
- 12:00Speaker 3: into you remember, I was a traditional investment and I
- 12:03Speaker 3: benet from the growth of this called max seven companies
- 12:08Speaker 3: from my previous life. But I do worry about four
- 12:13Speaker 3: to seven companies that are trillion dollar market cap, bigger
- 12:18Speaker 3: than the GDP of running in countries, bigger than the
- 12:21Speaker 3: top you know, after four or five. I mean that
- 12:25Speaker 3: some of these companies are bigger than the GDP of
- 12:27Speaker 3: most countries out there now. And think about Amazon just alone,
- 12:31Speaker 3: like again, great job, unbelievable Jeff Bezos did in now
- 12:34Speaker 3: Andy Jassey. But they have everything about you. They have
- 12:38Speaker 3: whole foods where you shop, Okay, they know basically ring
- 12:42Speaker 3: who comes in and out of your house. You know,
- 12:44Speaker 3: they obviously know your commerce. They also have your business
- 12:47Speaker 3: in aws and they're doing your insurance not good, your
- 12:51Speaker 3: health insurance. I mean, they had so much information about you,
- 12:57Speaker 3: and now they have the hyperscalers for their AWI so
- 13:00Speaker 3: that the future of AI may reside in there as well. Yeah,
- 13:04Speaker 3: it's like their nation states.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Now, John, I'm counting on you to try to break
- 13:08Speaker 1: that Agoppoly.
- 13:10Speaker 2: I feel it's just everybody that's the one here for sure.
- 13:13Speaker 3: You know, there's not one person that can break these
- 13:15Speaker 3: big things, all.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Right, So you've done a lot in terms and then just.
- 13:18Speaker 3: Be clear like there should be alternatives.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Sure, absolutely, for sure.
- 13:22Speaker 1: I think that's the key because once you get locked in,
- 13:24Speaker 1: that's when it gets very intolitarian, and that's the problem
- 13:28Speaker 1: I think a lot of networks really face.
- 13:30Speaker 2: And it's also what breaks them down to once you
- 13:32Speaker 2: get it.
- 13:32Speaker 1: At that point, let's talk about Animoka Brands, big announcement
- 13:36Speaker 1: a few weeks almost a month ago, big partnership, yachts
- 13:40Speaker 1: who's been on our show many times. You guys are
- 13:42Speaker 1: very aligned, I think in terms of the way you think,
- 13:45Speaker 1: what was it that brought you together and what are
- 13:47Speaker 1: you trying to do?
- 13:47Speaker 3: Well? I just had breakfasted though, so you know what
- 13:51Speaker 3: brought us together a long time ago is I love
- 13:54Speaker 3: the way he thinks Animoka Brands and the partnership with
- 13:59Speaker 3: Ava Labs and novel Lanch. It's going to help. Uh.
- 14:02Speaker 3: You know, they're very outside of the US, and we've
- 14:05Speaker 3: been making big pushes in Asia and Middle East, so
- 14:09Speaker 3: that partnership allows us to have access to the Middle East,
- 14:15Speaker 3: more access to Asia because we're big in Asia. But
- 14:19Speaker 3: also it's more than just gaming. It's not gaming anymore,
- 14:23Speaker 3: there's real world assets. There is also a whole bunch
- 14:26Speaker 3: of things. In fact, he and I were just talking
- 14:28Speaker 3: about the new push into the integration of AI and
- 14:32Speaker 3: blockchain with the Gentic payments. There are things that are
- 14:37Speaker 3: happening on aval Lanch that's you know, Gentic payments related
- 14:41Speaker 3: as well. As AI related, and he and I think
- 14:44Speaker 3: about what can we do together because there's a push
- 14:47Speaker 3: on both sides, but maybe we can join force, join
- 14:50Speaker 3: forces and do it because I think what blockchain is
- 14:53Speaker 3: going to help in the future for AI is obviously
- 14:55Speaker 3: the payments with stable coins, but also for trust when
- 15:00Speaker 3: when agents are creating agents and creating other code and
- 15:03Speaker 3: code is creating code, you need to have the trust
- 15:06Speaker 3: that the original thing was there. Now who owns the
- 15:09Speaker 3: original thing, who was the original creator? You need to
- 15:12Speaker 3: also identify who that person is. And these are things
- 15:14Speaker 3: that can live on the blockchain so people see the
- 15:17Speaker 3: provenance of the new code or the new things being created.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Right for sure?
- 15:23Speaker 1: Well, and Anamoka has been a stalwart in the gaming sector,
- 15:27Speaker 1: as has been the Avalanche in terms of really kind
- 15:31Speaker 1: of rolling it out. Stalled a little bit in the
- 15:33Speaker 1: last Bowl run. Do we get a resurgence of that
- 15:36Speaker 1: now that Clarity is maybe lining up here? Could it
- 15:40Speaker 1: open up an opportunity, a true opportunity for true you
- 15:44Speaker 1: know tier one games, to where they can start utilizing
- 15:47Speaker 1: crypto assets in game.
- 15:48Speaker 2: Do you think?
- 15:49Speaker 3: I think yes in two ways. Okay, so we have
- 15:52Speaker 3: a partnership with a company called Nexon. It's publicly traded
- 15:56Speaker 3: company in Japan. One of their oldest and biggest game aims,
- 16:00Speaker 3: it's Maple Story right over two hundred and twenty million users.
- 16:06Speaker 3: They've always innovated, that's how they keep the game going
- 16:08Speaker 3: after twenty twenty five years, and they see what roblox does.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Like Roadblox, even though it's not a crypto blockchain company,
- 16:15Speaker 3: it's got ethos of a crypto blockchain company. There's a
- 16:18Speaker 3: world bucks coin, there's a creative community, there's a user community,
- 16:22Speaker 3: and there's an economic system through the coin itself. So
- 16:25Speaker 3: Maple Story is creating a new instance of the game
- 16:28Speaker 3: on Avalanche. So I think we have somewhere between one
- 16:32Speaker 3: hundred and sixty to two hundred thousand new addresses and
- 16:37Speaker 3: users of this crypto version, this new instance on top
- 16:42Speaker 3: of Ava Lanche. And it's a closed ecosystem right now
- 16:47Speaker 3: because they have to really test it out and make
- 16:49Speaker 3: sure it works. But we're talking about creators now being
- 16:52Speaker 3: more composable with the code than in a roadblock sense.
- 16:56Speaker 3: They have to create things, give it to their creators
- 16:59Speaker 3: to create now, but you can go in there and
- 17:02Speaker 3: code it yourself. Right. Stable coins is going to be
- 17:06Speaker 3: a big part of that, allowing in game assets and
- 17:08Speaker 3: stuff to flow as well. So I think from a
- 17:11Speaker 3: value transfer as well as from a composability or code.
- 17:15Speaker 3: As regulation becomes more and more clear, more and more
- 17:18Speaker 3: companies are going to be creating a blockchain instance.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure, time to lock in, John. Thanks for
- 17:25Speaker 1: coming in today.
- 17:25Speaker 2: We appreciate it.
- 17:26Speaker 3: Always a pledgeable. All right, you.
- 17:27Speaker 2: Guys know what to do.
- 17:28Speaker 1: We'll be covering more of Accelerate here in Miami.
- 17:32Speaker 2: We'll catch you soon.
