- 0:00Speaker 1: The Sheffield Shield season, got the final, it deserved an
- 0:03Speaker 1: epic over five days, South Australia crown back to back champions.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Welcome to Domesticated. I'm justin Edwards, Fox Crickets Nick Savages
- 0:11Speaker 1: alongside me.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Nick.
- 0:12Speaker 1: What a Sheffield Shield Final. It was five days of
- 0:15Speaker 1: awesome cricket.
- 0:16Speaker 3: The two best states and the competition and Victoria dominated
- 0:20Speaker 3: the first couple of days. They got that first innings lead,
- 0:22Speaker 3: a little bit of a collapse early in the second
- 0:24Speaker 3: innings of South Australia and it was all about Alex
- 0:27Speaker 3: Carey and the fast ballers in that fourth innings. South
- 0:29Speaker 3: Australia back to back champions, first time in there one
- 0:32Speaker 3: hundred and thirty history that been able.
- 0:33Speaker 2: To do it. So a really exciting time for the Redbacks.
- 0:35Speaker 1: What I love about South Australia is they're taking almost
- 0:39Speaker 1: the discards from other states. Guys like Jason Sanger, Henry
- 0:42Speaker 1: Thornton who couldn't get Nathan McAndrew as well, couldn't get
- 0:45Speaker 1: an opportunity for New South Wales and here he is
- 0:47Speaker 1: Player of the match in the Shoeld Final. Ryan Harris
- 0:49Speaker 1: really seems to have to be able to get the
- 0:52Speaker 1: best out of these players that other states.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Weren't willing to give opportunities.
- 0:57Speaker 3: You have to actually go back a few years to
- 0:59Speaker 3: when South Astralia got bottom of the Shield ladder two
- 1:02Speaker 3: years in a row. They went nearly two years without
- 1:03Speaker 3: getting a win. Even it was around that time that
- 1:06Speaker 3: Jason Glessie was stood down. Michael Hassi was asked to
- 1:08Speaker 3: conduct a review and one of his main points was
- 1:11Speaker 3: don't be afraid to pinch players from other states. The
- 1:13Speaker 3: more popular states on the east, on the eastern coast
- 1:16Speaker 3: of Australia and then South Asraa took that on board.
- 1:19Speaker 3: They started taking the discards. The people were pushing for
- 1:21Speaker 3: spots and it's massively paid dividends. You don't want to
- 1:24Speaker 3: give my Cassi all the credit, but it was a
- 1:25Speaker 3: master stroke in the end. In that starting eleven in
- 1:28Speaker 3: that final South Australia, only one player was actually born
- 1:31Speaker 3: in South Australia, being.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Alex Carry at the Centurion.
- 1:35Speaker 3: The entire bowling attack was made out of Sydney great
- 1:37Speaker 3: cricketers at the start of their careers, so no exactly rights.
- 1:40Speaker 3: It's worked really well for South Australia and you know
- 1:43Speaker 3: a bit of a dynasty building here. Can they make
- 1:44Speaker 3: it a hat trick of titles next summer.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Yeah, two in a row, the first time in the
- 1:48Speaker 1: one hundred and thirty four year history of this competition
- 1:51Speaker 1: that South Australia have won two Shield titles in a row.
- 1:53Speaker 1: And the start of this competition there are only three
- 1:55Speaker 1: states in South Astralia is one of them. They stoodn't
- 1:57Speaker 1: win to an a row back then. Alex Carey was
- 1:59Speaker 1: the high like the only century of the match and
- 2:03Speaker 1: second consecutive Shield final one hundred after he got one
- 2:06Speaker 1: last year as well.
- 2:07Speaker 3: Is a big game player. His test experience is rubbing
- 2:10Speaker 3: off there. He can stand up when the pressure's on.
- 2:12Speaker 3: I mean the a lot of great players haven't been
- 2:13Speaker 3: able to do that in Shield finals. Peter Hanskin was
- 2:17Speaker 3: the leading run scorer of the entire competition, but he
- 2:20Speaker 3: just couldn't knuckle down in that second innings and get
- 2:22Speaker 3: Victoria of the line. Alex Carey, I mean there was
- 2:24Speaker 3: that one stage where South Australia were effectively seven for
- 2:28Speaker 3: forty on. I mean the game was it felt basically over.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Then with the help of Nathan mc andrew, rebuilt that innings,
- 2:34Speaker 3: gave them a chance and the Ballers did the rest
- 2:37Speaker 3: and yeah, Cary, he's the best keeper batter in the
- 2:39Speaker 3: world at the moment. I feel maybe not a couple
- 2:41Speaker 3: of years ago wouldn't have been, but after that Ashes
- 2:43Speaker 3: series and another Shield Final one hundred, he's got to
- 2:46Speaker 3: be considered one of the best in the world at
- 2:48Speaker 3: the craft.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 2:48Speaker 1: And what I love about Alex Carey is he's at
- 2:51Speaker 1: a point in his career where he doesn't need to
- 2:54Speaker 1: play shield cricket. If he didn't want to play, it
- 2:56Speaker 1: would be no skin off your nose. Yeah, you've had
- 2:59Speaker 1: a massive summer, can have a rest, but he comes
- 3:01Speaker 1: back to play shield cricket, not just to prepare for tests.
- 3:05Speaker 1: He plays shield cricket because he loves to play shield cricket.
- 3:08Speaker 1: He loves representing South Australia. You know, people go off
- 3:12Speaker 1: to the IPL and that's fine. I'm sure Kerry would
- 3:13Speaker 1: be at the IPL if he hadn't been in the
- 3:14Speaker 1: auction and got a deal.
- 3:16Speaker 2: But I love.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Players like this. Matthew Wade was the same. He loved
- 3:19Speaker 1: playing for his state. He loves playing shield cricket when
- 3:22Speaker 1: he doesn't need to, and I think it might ask
- 3:27Speaker 1: him at some point, but I think this actually winning
- 3:29Speaker 1: back to back Sheffer'd Shield titles. Alex Krey would actually
- 3:31Speaker 1: consider one of his career highlights. He's been in World
- 3:34Speaker 1: cut winning squads. He's one Ashes series, but the way
- 3:36Speaker 1: he loves representing South Australia as only South Australian born
- 3:40Speaker 1: South Australian in that eleven it's just as a Sheffield
- 3:43Speaker 1: Shield fan, it just fills my heart with warmth.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Well, they would have supported him through the entire to
- 3:48Speaker 3: the first half of his career as he was making
- 3:51Speaker 3: a name for himself in Australian cricket. South Australia ones
- 3:54Speaker 3: giving him those opportunities and giving him those chances, and
- 3:56Speaker 3: he feels an obligation to pay them back of course.
- 3:59Speaker 3: And as you said, a lot of the players his
- 4:01Speaker 3: teammates and the Test sight are off in the PSL
- 4:04Speaker 3: of the IPL. Scot Boland also played that final, similar
- 4:06Speaker 3: for Victoria. He was in that Victorian set up for
- 4:09Speaker 3: a decade before getting his Test debut.
- 4:11Speaker 2: He also feels as though this is a good chance
- 4:12Speaker 2: to hopefully.
- 4:13Speaker 3: Get the Nut title and pay back all the effort
- 4:15Speaker 3: they've put in for him, and Alex carry now hopefully
- 4:18Speaker 3: gets a bit of a breakheut of what's gonna be
- 4:19Speaker 3: a massive summer next year, and he just loves South
- 4:22Speaker 3: Astralian cricket.
- 4:23Speaker 2: He wants them to win.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Titles and it's really great to see him not only
- 4:26Speaker 3: contributing but winning them those games with big scores.
- 4:29Speaker 1: The came moment of that Shield Final was the start
- 4:31Speaker 1: of Day four when South Australia were in all sorts
- 4:33Speaker 1: of travel and not just one hundred from Alex Carey,
- 4:35Speaker 1: but sixty from Nathan McAndrew, first ever Sheffield Shield half
- 4:40Speaker 1: century and three wickets in each innings with the ball.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Player of the match.
- 4:44Speaker 1: For a guy that couldn't get a game for New
- 4:46Speaker 1: South Wales a few years ago, comes across to South
- 4:48Speaker 1: Australia and he's become such an important player for them.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Stood up now that Brendan Doggett has been both injured
- 4:54Speaker 1: and playing Test cricket, he's been their leading wicket taker
- 4:56Speaker 1: this year.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Is he in best?
- 4:59Speaker 1: The player of the match and Shield Finals is always
- 5:01Speaker 1: in Test conversations, but he has elevated himself. Not quite
- 5:05Speaker 1: to the level of Star Cummins, Hazelwood and Boland and
- 5:07Speaker 1: Nissa the rung down, but he is right up there
- 5:10Speaker 1: in contention in that.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Next lot of fast ballers.
- 5:13Speaker 3: We spoke about in the last episode that we recorded
- 5:15Speaker 3: who was going to step up in that final because
- 5:17Speaker 3: players who do perform in finals get test op worth double.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Any wickets and runs in the seer final, they're worth double.
- 5:22Speaker 3: And it has that feeling because we've spoken to death
- 5:25Speaker 3: about this massive summer schedule that Australia has next year.
- 5:28Speaker 3: There's gonna be twenty tests in the span of about
- 5:31Speaker 3: ten months and Australia's aging bowling attack is not gonna
- 5:35Speaker 3: be able to do that. Like as much as we
- 5:36Speaker 3: love star Hazel Cummins, we've seen that they are vulnerable.
- 5:39Speaker 3: They're not going to be able to do that test
- 5:41Speaker 3: up to test, up to test.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Hazewld and Cummins played what one test between them in
- 5:44Speaker 1: the whole Ashes exactly.
- 5:45Speaker 2: The opportunities are there.
- 5:46Speaker 3: Brendan Doggert got his chance this summer and I think
- 5:48Speaker 3: particularly for the Ashes too. I think Nathan McAndrew is
- 5:51Speaker 3: very much a chance that I think he's got the
- 5:52Speaker 3: skill set to do really well over the UK. I
- 5:54Speaker 3: think he's done a bit of county cricket in the
- 5:56Speaker 3: past and done so quite successfully. Ferguson neil as well.
- 5:58Speaker 3: He wasn't on the winning side, but bold and batted
- 6:01Speaker 3: really well in this match as well. And he's obviously been,
- 6:03Speaker 3: like McAndrew, a very consistent performer over.
- 6:05Speaker 2: The last few years.
- 6:06Speaker 3: So do not be surprised at the two of them
- 6:08Speaker 3: are in that Ashes squad in fourteen months time, because
- 6:11Speaker 3: I think they've got the skill set to do it
- 6:12Speaker 3: and they have the experience at Shield level to convert
- 6:15Speaker 3: that into Test wickets.
- 6:16Speaker 1: We'll move on to Fergus O'Neil. He's in a similar
- 6:18Speaker 1: mold to Nathan McAndrew. What he did really well was
- 6:23Speaker 1: not only his bowling, but he's batting in this match
- 6:25Speaker 1: as he's batting has been so good all summer. Well,
- 6:28Speaker 1: he was able to bat at.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Seven, I mean it was a role that Will Sutherland
- 6:32Speaker 3: had done in the past. For whatever reason, he slid
- 6:34Speaker 3: down to eight nine.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Quite for Victoria.
- 6:36Speaker 3: Fergus Neil, he's averaging in the high thirties this summer
- 6:38Speaker 3: in the Shield and we look at the top ten
- 6:40Speaker 3: names on the run scorers, they're all averaging mid thirties
- 6:43Speaker 3: and Fergus Neil's just on par with them. Essentially, Yes,
- 6:46Speaker 3: against the older ball, but regardless, he looks strong with
- 6:49Speaker 3: about He's basically an all round her now and that
- 6:51Speaker 3: co I think goes a long way and pushing his
- 6:53Speaker 3: chances for a Test caller. Because Alex Carey is getting
- 6:57Speaker 3: more chances at Test se number six, there's a spot
- 6:59Speaker 3: there at seven. Perhaps it's Bo Webster's. He's probably the
- 7:02Speaker 3: first name there. But if they needed a bowling a
- 7:05Speaker 3: rounder for team balance, whether it be in India, we
- 7:07Speaker 3: know a lot of weird things happens with citing eleven
- 7:09Speaker 3: in India, there's every chance that they might need it
- 7:12Speaker 3: as a second quick also providing some valuable runs. So
- 7:15Speaker 3: if he can keep improving as batting as well as
- 7:17Speaker 3: keeping his bowling as consistent as it has been, he's
- 7:19Speaker 3: every chance of helping his chances for Test debut.
- 7:21Speaker 1: I do think that is his path into the Test team,
- 7:24Speaker 1: sort of as the successor to Nisa as a bowling
- 7:28Speaker 1: all round up. We know the air speed everyone we
- 7:30Speaker 1: talked to death about Fergus only is too slow for
- 7:32Speaker 1: Test cricket. But if he's get chipping in with the
- 7:35Speaker 1: odd half century as well as being a frontline bowler,
- 7:38Speaker 1: I think that is his path into the Test team
- 7:40Speaker 1: in a similar way that Nissa did, maybe not as
- 7:43Speaker 1: a guy that's going to play sixty tests, but a
- 7:45Speaker 1: guy that might pay twenty super important tests for Victoria.
- 7:49Speaker 1: This was a real missed opportunity for them. We have
- 7:51Speaker 1: spoken all year on this show about how they are
- 7:54Speaker 1: the best team in the competition. They get the home
- 7:56Speaker 1: final lock that in with a couple of rounds to go,
- 7:59Speaker 1: and they miss their optunity on the big stage.
- 8:02Speaker 2: They slipt up. They tripped at that final hurdle.
- 8:04Speaker 3: We just spoke before about how they were in such
- 8:06Speaker 3: a dominant position, they just let that partnership grow. They
- 8:08Speaker 3: couldn knock over the tail quickly and then the top bar,
- 8:11Speaker 3: and that fourth innings just couldn't step up. They just
- 8:13Speaker 3: couldn't get the runs. Hanskom was there only when who
- 8:16Speaker 3: got past thirty I think in that fourth inning.
- 8:18Speaker 1: So that moment at the end of day four when
- 8:20Speaker 1: Hanskimb and Harris were in, and if those two got
- 8:23Speaker 1: to stumps, Victoria would have been strong favorites going into
- 8:26Speaker 1: day five. They both got out and Victoria sent the
- 8:29Speaker 1: two night watchmen in, who both got three to stumps.
- 8:30Speaker 1: So that was a fine decision. But if those two
- 8:33Speaker 1: had been at stumps, the two guys with test experience.
- 8:37Speaker 1: You got to get them out on next day before
- 8:39Speaker 1: you can get into the tail. That would have changed
- 8:41Speaker 1: the game entirely.
- 8:42Speaker 3: No, exactly right, So it is a shame for Victoria.
- 8:44Speaker 3: But Will Sutherland spoke about afterwards that he does feel
- 8:47Speaker 3: that this team is building towards something really good, really strong,
- 8:51Speaker 3: and look at the squad. There's so many young players
- 8:53Speaker 3: there who are still developing their craft. Olli peak Campbell Kellaway.
- 8:56Speaker 3: We've seen Sam Harper develop into a really exciting opening player,
- 9:00Speaker 3: and a lot of the quick balls are in their
- 9:02Speaker 3: mid twenties as well. They are still building towards a
- 9:04Speaker 3: really strong Victorian side, and they've missed a lot of
- 9:07Speaker 3: opportunities over the last few years. I've made the final
- 9:09Speaker 3: a few times without getting it done. But I think
- 9:11Speaker 3: as well subtle and said during that post match presentation,
- 9:14Speaker 3: you know it's not all about one match.
- 9:16Speaker 2: He's going to define this team.
- 9:18Speaker 3: No doubt They're gonna be that final again next year
- 9:19Speaker 3: because they are a really strong side.
- 9:21Speaker 1: The controversy out of the Sheffield Shield finally, if you
- 9:24Speaker 1: can call it that, the injury sub and so to
- 9:27Speaker 1: explain what happens Sam Mali. It was selected over Mitch
- 9:31Speaker 1: Perry for Victoria, which was a really tight selection call.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Samily then injures his hamstring.
- 9:35Speaker 1: We've heard now it's a Grade two hamstring strain and
- 9:37Speaker 1: Mitch Perry is injury subbed in, which is as per
- 9:41Speaker 1: the rules, and Mitch Perry goes on to take a
- 9:43Speaker 1: wicket with his very first ball. So Ryan Harris was
- 9:46Speaker 1: critical of this. It's a rule we've had the whole
- 9:48Speaker 1: year in the Sheffield Shields, initially on a trial basis,
- 9:51Speaker 1: what do you think of it?
- 9:53Speaker 2: In a Shield final and it's played a pivotal role.
- 9:56Speaker 2: I'm a big fan of the rule.
- 9:57Speaker 3: I would like to see it at Test level because
- 10:01Speaker 3: the alternative we saw last year during the English summer
- 10:04Speaker 3: when Chris Wokes walked out with his broken arm in
- 10:07Speaker 3: a sling having to bat out to try and save
- 10:09Speaker 3: the game.
- 10:09Speaker 2: We don't want to see that scenario.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Risha Pant had a similar situation early in this series
- 10:13Speaker 3: yet to bat with one leg. Essentially, I prefer this
- 10:16Speaker 3: as an alternative, and they have rules in place. It
- 10:19Speaker 3: has to be a switch done before day two and
- 10:22Speaker 3: the opposition is allowed to make a strategic switch in response.
- 10:25Speaker 3: So I see that as a really good alternative that
- 10:28Speaker 3: just forcing into players to bat essentially, and we see
- 10:32Speaker 3: how detrimental can be if a team is down a bowler,
- 10:36Speaker 3: essentially trying to make someone ball through the pain, resulting.
- 10:38Speaker 2: In longer term injuries. I like the rule.
- 10:42Speaker 3: I think it does still need tinkering, and I probably
- 10:44Speaker 3: will be tinkering with over the next couple years.
- 10:45Speaker 2: I would like to see at test level.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Eventually it can result in some fascal scenes as he
- 10:50Speaker 3: saw in the Shield final where Ben Roh was being
- 10:52Speaker 3: sent out as a substitute fielder at one stage to
- 10:54Speaker 3: make up the eleven. I get that, but I think
- 10:57Speaker 3: it's better than an alternative. Personally.
- 10:59Speaker 1: I like the rule in Shield Cricket because we talk
- 11:02Speaker 1: about the dual role of Shield cricket, which is, yes,
- 11:04Speaker 1: it's winning and the title, but also to develop players
- 11:08Speaker 1: for the Test team, and nobody gets developed by somebody
- 11:12Speaker 1: being out of the team and nobody coming in to
- 11:14Speaker 1: replace them, not just for the team that that happened
- 11:16Speaker 1: to with a person that gets the opportunity like Mitch
- 11:18Speaker 1: Perry gets the opportunity to come in, but also for
- 11:21Speaker 1: the opposition, because say Alex Kerry is a prospective Test player.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Had he got a century against a depleted attack, that
- 11:28Speaker 1: would be a mark against him. So I get one
- 11:30Speaker 1: hundred hours against a depleted attack, so he gets the
- 11:32Speaker 1: opportunity to do it against a full attack. I don't
- 11:35Speaker 1: want to see an injury sub in Test cricket, where
- 11:38Speaker 1: winning is absolutely everything. I think built into your selection
- 11:43Speaker 1: of the eleven should be contingencies for what happens in
- 11:48Speaker 1: the case of an injury. So an all rounder is
- 11:50Speaker 1: valuable to your team because they can fill a role
- 11:54Speaker 1: if a bowler goes down, not even if a bowler
- 11:56Speaker 1: goes down with injury. If a bowl is just bowling bad,
- 11:59Speaker 1: you can go to your round it and you have
- 12:00Speaker 1: options like that or you're The reason you know tail
- 12:03Speaker 1: end is practiced batting so much is because if they're
- 12:05Speaker 1: required that which could be in the case of an injury,
- 12:08Speaker 1: it could just be in the case of batting collapse.
- 12:10Speaker 1: So I don't mind the rule in shield cricket. I
- 12:13Speaker 1: don't want to see it in Test cricket.
- 12:15Speaker 2: I think you're right.
- 12:16Speaker 3: Another is at this stage with how it's played out,
- 12:19Speaker 3: there are opportunities for Test sites to exploit it as
- 12:22Speaker 3: that which Victoria did not do He was no extreme
- 12:24Speaker 3: at hamstring injury, but the rule does leave it open
- 12:27Speaker 3: to be manipulated one hundred percent, and Ben Stokes flagged
- 12:29Speaker 3: that during the England series he was asked about the
- 12:32Speaker 3: injury and he basically, I don't like it because I
- 12:34Speaker 3: feel like we would try and exploit it as well
- 12:36Speaker 3: as the opposition would. So yeah, perhaps you're right test level,
- 12:40Speaker 3: it's not quite ready, but I think it does play
- 12:41Speaker 3: an important role definitely at Shield level. I think far
- 12:44Speaker 3: too often before we've seen games decided by moments like that,
- 12:48Speaker 3: and it's.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Benefited New Souf Well a lot this summer.
- 12:50Speaker 3: I think two or three times they had to bring
- 12:52Speaker 3: in a substitute player for an injury. Seann Abbott was
- 12:55Speaker 3: the first to go off Will Saltzman during a game
- 12:57Speaker 3: with the SCG. The Blues had a lot of bad
- 12:59Speaker 3: luck throughout this summer. Clear up the reason they didn't
- 13:01Speaker 3: make the final. They've got a lot of bigger issues there.
- 13:03Speaker 2: But it has a role to.
- 13:04Speaker 3: Play in the Shield And while it was a bit
- 13:06Speaker 3: silly in the Shield Final this time around and it
- 13:09Speaker 3: did definitely aid Victoria's cause, I think it's really important.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Okay, in our last episode.
- 13:13Speaker 1: This has been our biggest topic of discussion all year,
- 13:16Speaker 1: the Australian Top seven. We're going to name our Australian
- 13:19Speaker 1: Top seven for their next Test match, which is Bangladeshi
- 13:21Speaker 1: in August, and I'm taking it with a view to
- 13:24Speaker 1: South Africa in October as well. I'm sure we both
- 13:26Speaker 1: have Travis Head opening the batting. Who is opening the
- 13:29Speaker 1: batting alongside him?
- 13:30Speaker 3: For you? This is difficult for me because I'm a
- 13:32Speaker 3: big fan of Jake WEATHERALLDO. I really like him as
- 13:34Speaker 3: an opener, but at this stage I'm backing Matt Renshaw
- 13:38Speaker 3: for that gig. He obviously hasn't played Test cricket for
- 13:41Speaker 3: a few years, but he's matured a lot as a
- 13:43Speaker 3: player and a person, and in all three formats he's
- 13:46Speaker 3: contributing a lot for Queensland and the Brisbane Heat and
- 13:49Speaker 3: I just feel that he'd be a really good accomplish
- 13:51Speaker 3: for Travis Head.
- 13:51Speaker 2: At the top. I am Matt Renshaw as well.
- 13:53Speaker 1: I think while his shield numbers in terms of total
- 13:56Speaker 1: runs don't stack up as much, is because he hasn't
- 13:59Speaker 1: played as many because he's been playing with Australia. He
- 14:01Speaker 1: was at the t twenty World Cup. He played for
- 14:03Speaker 1: the one days at the start of the summer. I'm
- 14:05Speaker 1: him opening the banning as well. However, I'm perhaps not.
- 14:09Speaker 1: I'm not giving up on Jake Weather.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Or just yet.
- 14:10Speaker 1: I don't think his international career is over. You're number three.
- 14:14Speaker 3: I also pondered over this one for a while, but
- 14:17Speaker 3: purely because of I don't see a stronger alternative. I'm
- 14:20Speaker 3: sticking with Manus Lavish and it's approaching our three is
- 14:23Speaker 3: since he got a Test one hundred, which is pretty
- 14:25Speaker 3: wilful for Australia. Number three like that wouldn't have been
- 14:28Speaker 3: acceptable a generation to go, but we saw at the
- 14:30Speaker 3: start of the summer he was just a class above
- 14:32Speaker 3: everyone else in the Sheffield Shield at start. Obviously the
- 14:35Speaker 3: form dipped off in the ashes and drew in the
- 14:36Speaker 3: second half of the Shield, but he has what eleven
- 14:39Speaker 3: test hundreds, and that experience is so valuable rather than
- 14:43Speaker 3: going on essentially a wild card or a new name
- 14:46Speaker 3: at number three, which is such an important spot.
- 14:47Speaker 2: So just his.
- 14:48Speaker 3: Experience keeps him there. But he needs runs, purely, he
- 14:51Speaker 3: needs runs.
- 14:52Speaker 2: I am Manus at three as well.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Tensatively, I sort of was like, I can't we need
- 14:59Speaker 1: to try something else. But then no, I didn't nowhere
- 15:02Speaker 1: else to go. The only other thing I thought about
- 15:05Speaker 1: was sticking with Weatherorld and having Renshaw at three because
- 15:08Speaker 1: renchal combat anyway, is the most first tail batsman in Australia.
- 15:10Speaker 2: That's what I thought about. But I'm just sticking with
- 15:13Speaker 2: Manus for now.
- 15:15Speaker 1: I'm sure we both have Steve Smith at number four
- 15:17Speaker 1: your number five.
- 15:19Speaker 3: Also, maybe he's not controversial Cameron Green. I yeah, he's
- 15:23Speaker 3: had an awful summer, a really bad summer.
- 15:25Speaker 2: He would know that.
- 15:27Speaker 3: But I think he has the talent to be a
- 15:30Speaker 3: great Test cricket. I still think that talent's there. He
- 15:32Speaker 3: finished the summer with a shield hundred in Sydney in
- 15:36Speaker 3: what proved, you know, really important knock for him after
- 15:39Speaker 3: a bad summer.
- 15:40Speaker 2: But he contributes to the ball.
- 15:41Speaker 3: He's a gun in gully and I still think he
- 15:44Speaker 3: has the makings of a great Test cricketer.
- 15:46Speaker 2: So I'm sicking with him for now. I think.
- 15:49Speaker 1: What you've said is what the selectors are most likely
- 15:51Speaker 1: to go with. I've gone in a different path. I
- 15:54Speaker 1: wrestled with this one for a long time. I thought
- 15:56Speaker 1: about I thought about Pete Hanscombe. See if you shild
- 15:59Speaker 1: leting run score. I thought about Green, I thought about
- 16:02Speaker 1: dropping Renshort down to five. I've ended up with Curtis
- 16:05Speaker 1: Patterson from New South Wales. I think that one hundred
- 16:07Speaker 1: and seventy three not out that he scored in Shield.
- 16:09Speaker 1: That's the best innings anybody's played in Shield cricket. Maybe
- 16:12Speaker 1: Alex Cary's one hundred final overtakes it, but I think,
- 16:16Speaker 1: and then my thinking is all in the next twelve months.
- 16:19Speaker 1: I'm not thinking any longer term than next year's ashes.
- 16:23Speaker 1: So the next twelve months we know all the big
- 16:24Speaker 1: series there and a World chest Championship final likely as well,
- 16:27Speaker 1: so I'm not worried about age for this twelve months.
- 16:31Speaker 1: I'm having Curtis Patterson. I love certainly starting there.
- 16:35Speaker 3: I love to see a little bit more consistency from
- 16:36Speaker 3: him in the red bull stuff. He was the best
- 16:38Speaker 3: one day better and domestic cricket this summer, but he
- 16:41Speaker 3: just wasn't converting enough starts into big scool cricket.
- 16:45Speaker 2: That's his white bull runs.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Because I think fifty other cricket and Test cricket close,
- 16:50Speaker 1: I think they're even closer together in terms of what
- 16:52Speaker 1: you need to do as a batsman than one day
- 16:53Speaker 1: cricket and T twenty cricket, and his one day form
- 16:56Speaker 1: bumped him above Handskim for me, so I'm hoping he
- 16:59Speaker 1: can translate. Just but just pretend it's fifty.
- 17:01Speaker 2: Have a match.
- 17:01Speaker 1: But like that, you get one hundred, you won't get
- 17:02Speaker 1: out number six. We both have Alex carry a batting six.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Even though that we could keep it normally, go seven,
- 17:07Speaker 1: he went up to six. Did fine, you're number seven,
- 17:10Speaker 1: bo Webson. He's always performed in the Test side. Every
- 17:13Speaker 1: time he's had a chance. They he's contributed. No big
- 17:16Speaker 1: hundreds or anything, but he has so often rescued that side,
- 17:18Speaker 1: particularly in the West Indies and the Caribbean tour. He
- 17:21Speaker 1: was unlucky to miss out during the first half the
- 17:22Speaker 1: Ashes series.
- 17:23Speaker 3: He gets his chance back in and nails it once
- 17:25Speaker 3: again with a few wickets important runs for me.
- 17:29Speaker 2: He's a great number seven.
- 17:29Speaker 3: I think he balances the side really well and his
- 17:32Speaker 3: value will be massive. I think during the Border Gavescot Trophy,
- 17:35Speaker 3: I think he's versatility, thinking about anywhere from three down
- 17:38Speaker 3: to eight really and he can bol a bit of
- 17:39Speaker 3: off spin on those turning decks. I think he's a
- 17:42Speaker 3: muscle in that side for India, but he's just performed
- 17:44Speaker 3: too well to ignore him.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Again.
- 17:46Speaker 1: I am Bo Webster as well at number seven, so
- 17:48Speaker 1: I'm Cameron Green not in my eleven right now. I'm
- 17:52Speaker 1: not writing him off entirely. I think he'll be certainly
- 17:54Speaker 1: on the plane to South Africa in the squad.
- 17:56Speaker 2: He'll probably be in the squad for Bangladesh as well.
- 17:59Speaker 1: Just right I just want to see a little bit more,
- 18:04Speaker 1: and I don't even know what I want to see
- 18:05Speaker 1: because he goes back to Sheld Cricket and he gets
- 18:07Speaker 1: one hundred. It's just I think I can't drop bow Webster.
- 18:11Speaker 1: I can't stomach moving Green up in the order any
- 18:14Speaker 1: higher than six. So I don't want him at five.
- 18:17Speaker 1: I'll have Patterson or Hanskim or someone else at five.
- 18:20Speaker 1: So at the moment, I'm Green out, which I don't
- 18:24Speaker 1: think the selectors will do. I think Green will begin.
- 18:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:26Speaker 3: I think we saw Green at three last year, which
- 18:29Speaker 3: I didn't like.
- 18:30Speaker 2: A lot of people didn't like.
- 18:32Speaker 3: He got I think one solid booking fifty in the
- 18:34Speaker 3: West Indies, but the way that he throwed that summer
- 18:36Speaker 3: I dropped from three down to five, down to seven.
- 18:39Speaker 3: I think finished up at number eight during the Sydney Tests.
- 18:42Speaker 3: It was a really sort of perfect example of how
- 18:44Speaker 3: far his batting had dropped in how unreliable.
- 18:47Speaker 2: He was in that Test side. But I just think
- 18:50Speaker 2: he's a gun. He's a gun.
- 18:52Speaker 3: He looks so good when he's on and I think
- 18:54Speaker 3: he can be a match in both thousands of the game.
- 18:57Speaker 3: So yeah, I think him and Webster the same side
- 19:00Speaker 3: will work really well.
- 19:01Speaker 1: I can tell you with both of this we both struggled,
- 19:03Speaker 1: so it's not going to be an easy thing for
- 19:05Speaker 1: the selectors to pick. Heading into that Test in Bangladesh
- 19:08Speaker 1: coming up, we speak, We go inside the South Australian
- 19:11Speaker 1: Sheffield Shield winning camp and we speak to their quick,
- 19:13Speaker 1: Henry Thornton. Well, it is our great privilege to be
- 19:16Speaker 1: joined by one of the winners of the Sheffield Shield
- 19:19Speaker 1: South Australian Quick, Henry Thornton. Henry, thanks so much for
- 19:22Speaker 1: joining us. We get the first and most important things
- 19:24Speaker 1: out of the way. First, did you find somewhere to
- 19:27Speaker 1: celebrate on a Monday afternoon in Melbourne? And who was
- 19:29Speaker 1: best on ground in the celebrations.
- 19:33Speaker 3: We did?
- 19:33Speaker 4: Yeah, we were lucky enough because the game kind of
- 19:35Speaker 4: finished early enough, so yeah, we had a fair crack
- 19:39Speaker 4: at it. We were in the sheds with our families
- 19:42Speaker 4: and partners who had traveled across for the game. We're
- 19:45Speaker 4: in there for about a few hours and then yeah,
- 19:47Speaker 4: we did find somewhere to Yeah, to let loose last night.
- 19:51Speaker 5: It was good based on ground. I'm going to go
- 19:54Speaker 5: Betty min Enti. He's pretty good at it.
- 19:57Speaker 3: And the team flew back to Adelaide this morning. What
- 20:00Speaker 3: to the next couple of days look like for yourself
- 20:02Speaker 3: and the teammates.
- 20:03Speaker 4: We're just going to keep celebrating. We're just going to
- 20:06Speaker 4: keep celebrating. I think there'll be a few cold yeers
- 20:09Speaker 4: floating around. So we've got a parade this afternoon down
- 20:13Speaker 4: at Random Wall, so we're going to do that and
- 20:15Speaker 4: then yeah, let the good times role.
- 20:17Speaker 5: We'll go to end the season awards night tomorrow night.
- 20:20Speaker 5: So yeah, we'll just keep partying. Lost pretty good at the.
- 20:23Speaker 1: Moment and the celebrations began. You played a key moment
- 20:26Speaker 1: you took the last week hit. I think that was
- 20:28Speaker 1: scenes every club cricket in the country can relate to.
- 20:31Speaker 1: When you take the last week it, everybody around you
- 20:33Speaker 1: tell her.
- 20:33Speaker 2: It's what it was like to be in the middle
- 20:35Speaker 2: of that throng. Ah.
- 20:39Speaker 4: Honestly, so many people asking me yesterday and I still
- 20:42Speaker 4: don't believe it, like in terms of it just did shock.
- 20:46Speaker 5: It's again like it's days like yesterday.
- 20:50Speaker 4: Why you play cricket, right, And I guess it's why
- 20:52Speaker 4: you as a kid. You dream of opportunities like that
- 20:56Speaker 4: and for it to come to fruition.
- 20:57Speaker 5: Was just amazing. So yeah, our group so special.
- 21:01Speaker 4: We love each other and you would have seen it
- 21:03Speaker 4: in the scenes yesterday when I took that final wicket.
- 21:05Speaker 4: Everyone was just so happy that we got the shield
- 21:07Speaker 4: and brought it back to South Australia.
- 21:10Speaker 3: If we go back a couple of days, Victoria had
- 21:13Speaker 3: gotten a sizable first innings lead about sixty odd runs,
- 21:17Speaker 3: and then the South Stralian top order stumbled a little
- 21:19Speaker 3: bit early and then Nathan McAndrew walked out. Was there
- 21:22Speaker 3: a moment where you felt that maybe the game was
- 21:24Speaker 3: slipping away from South Australia a little bit?
- 21:32Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 21:32Speaker 4: Sorry, I just lost it for two seconds, but yeah,
- 21:34Speaker 4: talking about Nathan McAndrew, mate, he battered like Bradman.
- 21:39Speaker 5: He was amazing and cares as well. He just showed
- 21:43Speaker 5: why he's.
- 21:45Speaker 4: He's a testkeeper for a reason, right, So every time
- 21:48Speaker 4: he comes back and plays, who else he performs. He's
- 21:50Speaker 4: so great to have around the group. But yeah, Maka
- 21:53Speaker 4: obviously one player player of the final and thoroughly deserved
- 21:57Speaker 4: a beat bold outstanding Lee but also that innings yests
- 22:00Speaker 4: to get us out of trouble was insane. So yeah,
- 22:03Speaker 4: lucky to have both of them in our team. The
- 22:05Speaker 4: great guys and they fight and they do anything for
- 22:08Speaker 4: our team.
- 22:09Speaker 1: You had a great final as well, Henry three wickets
- 22:11Speaker 1: in both innings.
- 22:13Speaker 2: You've really built a roster.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Of depth in South Australia with you quicks. There was you,
- 22:17Speaker 1: Nathan McAndrew, Jordan Buckingham and Liam Scott the all rounder
- 22:21Speaker 1: all in the top twenty. Wic could take is for
- 22:22Speaker 1: the Shield this season and led by your coach Ryan Harris,
- 22:25Speaker 1: another great quick. You've really built such a great depth
- 22:28Speaker 1: in your fast bowling stocks and you all seem to
- 22:29Speaker 1: work off each other really well.
- 22:32Speaker 5: Yeah we do. I think that's just the culture that
- 22:35Speaker 5: we wanted to build at Sucker.
- 22:37Speaker 4: Rhino's obviously come in his second year in the role
- 22:39Speaker 4: and he's gone back to back but.
- 22:41Speaker 5: That's just what he's built.
- 22:43Speaker 4: I feel like anyone who comes into our team does
- 22:45Speaker 4: their role really well, does their job really well. And
- 22:48Speaker 4: I think like last year when we won it, we
- 22:50Speaker 4: use twenty three out of twenty six squad members, so
- 22:52Speaker 4: it takes a full squad to win trophies.
- 22:56Speaker 5: And that's something we speak about, is you're playing in
- 22:59Speaker 5: our team, the right to play in our.
- 23:01Speaker 4: Team, and if you are playing in our team, everyone has.
- 23:05Speaker 5: Full faith and that you're going to get it done.
- 23:07Speaker 5: So yeah, it's amazing.
- 23:08Speaker 4: Look, we obviously it's really hard to leave guys out
- 23:11Speaker 4: as well, like I got left out last year in
- 23:13Speaker 4: the final, but you know, totally understood it. And whoever
- 23:17Speaker 4: goes in and does a job, they just get it done.
- 23:20Speaker 5: So I think that's what we're building and it's pretty
- 23:22Speaker 5: special to be able to do it and keep this.
- 23:24Speaker 4: If we can keep this group together, we're going to
- 23:26Speaker 4: probably you know, hopefully win a few more titles.
- 23:29Speaker 3: During the postmatch presentation, Nath mc andrews spoke about how
- 23:33Speaker 3: it was particularly special to go back to back because
- 23:35Speaker 3: it was proof that last year it wasn't a fluke.
- 23:37Speaker 3: There's a dynasty building here in South Australia. Is that
- 23:40Speaker 3: the feeling among the group that it felt really special
- 23:43Speaker 3: to justify and back it up in consecutive years.
- 23:46Speaker 4: Yeah, we've always spoken about building something really special. Now
- 23:51Speaker 4: obviously going back to back helps that. But if we
- 23:54Speaker 4: can keep this group together, we're all great mates off
- 23:56Speaker 4: the field, we love playing with each other. If we
- 23:58Speaker 4: can keep them all together, kind of the sky's the limit.
- 24:02Speaker 4: And we also, you know, we really like to produce
- 24:05Speaker 4: some Australian players as well, and I think winning winning
- 24:07Speaker 4: trophies helps that.
- 24:08Speaker 5: So we're moving in the right direction.
- 24:12Speaker 4: And hopefully this is you know, we can add some
- 24:13Speaker 4: more silverware along the way.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Talking about the great bond that you have with your teammates, Henry,
- 24:18Speaker 1: does some of that come from the fact that quite
- 24:20Speaker 1: a lot of you are not South Australian born and bred.
- 24:23Speaker 1: You've come from other states because you weren't getting the
- 24:25Speaker 1: opportunity in your home states. South Australia have extended that
- 24:28Speaker 1: opportunity to you. And there's you, there's Jason Sanger, Henry Hunt,
- 24:32Speaker 1: Liam Scott even was from another state. Like all these
- 24:34Speaker 1: guys that come from other states and South Australia are
- 24:36Speaker 1: giving you that opportunity and you've all just seized it
- 24:39Speaker 1: with both hands.
- 24:41Speaker 5: Yeah, it's it's a pretty unique situation, right.
- 24:44Speaker 4: So we're all obviously well, there's a fair few of
- 24:46Speaker 4: us who have come from into state looking for an opportunity,
- 24:49Speaker 4: and I guess that's probably galvanized our team. We're all
- 24:54Speaker 4: a great bunch of blokes as well, and I think
- 24:56Speaker 4: that really helps in a team environment.
- 24:58Speaker 5: We're all also very invest sit in each.
- 25:00Speaker 4: Other's success, like we actually genuinely want people to do well.
- 25:04Speaker 4: And you know, I think you would have seen that
- 25:06Speaker 4: yesterday when all of our players who you know, our
- 25:10Speaker 4: squad members who weren't in the Shield squad were there.
- 25:12Speaker 4: They flew down to Melbourne. They stayed the week.
- 25:14Speaker 5: So yeah, it's an amazing culture that we're building.
- 25:18Speaker 4: But it's also it's just it's great to see guys
- 25:21Speaker 4: get an opportunity, right, Like I didn't get an opportunity
- 25:25Speaker 4: a New so Huales and then you know went through Victoria.
- 25:28Speaker 4: Now I'm at South Australia, so I think, you know,
- 25:31Speaker 4: you got to go somewhere. We're going to get an
- 25:33Speaker 4: opportunity and it's just great to do it with a
- 25:34Speaker 4: great bunch of blokes who've done it the hard.
- 25:37Speaker 5: Way, gone through club cricket.
- 25:39Speaker 4: And I think that's probably why you saw the raw
- 25:41Speaker 4: emotion yesterday of us on the field, because we know
- 25:44Speaker 4: how hard it is to get in a system and
- 25:47Speaker 4: have success.
- 25:48Speaker 3: And he touched on how important is to produce Australian players.
- 25:51Speaker 3: We saw your teammate Brendan Doggett make us test abut
- 25:54Speaker 3: during the Ashes.
- 25:55Speaker 2: He helped Australia win that series.
- 25:57Speaker 3: Who else from your squad would you love to see
- 25:59Speaker 3: inn a baking Green Caps some time over the next
- 26:01Speaker 3: eighteen months. You yourself have had a couple of Australia opportunities,
- 26:04Speaker 3: have nailed that and no doubt would be really eager
- 26:06Speaker 3: to push for that spot. But who else for your
- 26:08Speaker 3: teammates do you think is ready for that next step?
- 26:11Speaker 4: I think Nathan McAndrew is, and I think he should
- 26:14Speaker 4: be in the conversation.
- 26:15Speaker 5: I don't know why he's not in the conversation.
- 26:18Speaker 4: He's a guru, he's so skillful with the ball he's
- 26:21Speaker 4: got he's got a great motor, he can bowl anywhere.
- 26:26Speaker 4: And yeah, I think Nathan mc andrew, I'd love to
- 26:29Speaker 4: see our batters like I think Jason Sugger and Nathan McSweeney.
- 26:34Speaker 5: I'd love to see them push push for the national.
- 26:37Speaker 4: Selection, but at the moment it's a bit weird because
- 26:41Speaker 4: we kind of feel like if we keep winning stuff,
- 26:42Speaker 4: it's going to kind of take care of itself. So
- 26:45Speaker 4: hopefully if we keep winning trophies, we can get you know,
- 26:47Speaker 4: three or four South Australians in that team.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Plenty of South Australians in the National Conversation. I'm sure Henry,
- 26:53Speaker 1: we might let you go and give your voice a break.
- 26:55Speaker 1: I can tell it's been a big night of celebrating.
- 26:57Speaker 1: Thanks so much for joining us, and congratulations on your
- 27:00Speaker 1: chef you shield title.
- 27:02Speaker 4: Nah, thanks boys, I appreciate it. Yeah, we're gonna have
- 27:04Speaker 4: a few more beers to recond
