- 0:07The California Angels faced the Kansas City Royals at Royals Stadium for a Thursday night
- 0:11game on September 20, 1979. The two teams were atop the AL West in a tight race for
- 0:17the pennant with only 10 games remaining. California was on top with the two-game lead
- 0:22under manager Jim Frugosi in his second full season as skipper. Kansas City was managed
- 0:27by Whitey Herzog who had led the Royals to three straight ALCS appearances. His audio
- 0:32recording is from the Kansas City Radio broadcast featuring announcers Denny Matthews and Fred
- 0:37Whedon.
- 0:38Making his nice start trying to win his fifth game, he's 4-2 with an ERA of 3.05. Rick Miller,
- 0:46left-handed batter hitting 284. The first pitch of the night is lifted to center field. Well
- 0:51hit, the back goes over for plenty of room, one pitch, one out. That will bring up the
- 1:01Angels third baseman, Carney Landsberg. Landsberg a 294 hitter, he has 17 home runs. 72 RBI.
- 1:08But in this series, Landsberg just one out of 11. Right-hand hitter, good runner, has
- 1:21power, Chamberlain's pitch is high, one ball and no strike. Craig you'll recall won his
- 1:27first three starts, all complete games, but has won just one of his last five starts with
- 1:33two losses and a pair of no decisions. Swinging a miss by Carney Landsberg in the count one
- 1:40and one. Well Craig Chamberlain his last start came on Sunday against Seattle. He did not
- 1:45figure in the decision the Royals winning 5-4. He went 5-2-3, allowed six hits and four
- 1:52runs. The one-one pitch misses the outside corner, the knees two and one. Follow ball back to the screen off the bat of
- 2:13Carney Landsberg, two balls and two strikes. I said Craig pitch Sunday, he pitched Saturday
- 2:22night. That was the 11 inning contest won by the Royals. His last win was at Seattle
- 2:30on September the 7th. Final score 6-2. Landsberg a fling of a miss, now he goes. So Miller
- 2:37flies to center, Landsberg strikes up and now Ralph Gar gets his first bad in a California
- 2:44Uniform. Ralph with a light shock sitting 280. 9 homers 39 RBIs, 86 base hits. He is the
- 2:52angel's designated hitter tonight. Base is empty two down. Chamberlain's pitch is popped up on the infield.
- 3:06UL Washington under the ball and UL makes the catch. That retires the side. The angels put out 1-2-3 after half an inning.
- 3:13California nothing, Royals coming up. Bottom of the first inning, the angels came up empty in the top half of the first.
- 3:2431 year old right hander Jim Barr on the mound for California. Barr is 9-12 this year with an ERA of 4.17.
- 3:32His last victory on September the 8th, 3-2 over the Brewers. His last outing was a rematch against Milwaukee
- 3:41at County Stadium on the 14th. He went 6 innings, was not involved in the decision. The angels won 8-7 and Jim allowed 3 runs.
- 3:50Making his second start against the Royals. He lost at the big A 13-4 to the Royals in Larry Gura on June the 23rd.
- 4:00Jim allowed 7 hits and 4 runs and 4-2-3 innings. He's a former National Lager, 6th of the San Francisco Giants.
- 4:10Eddie Blade at the University of Southern California for Rod Adonis.
- 4:15Willie Wilson leading off, Willie hitting 3-14 with half a dozen homers and 46 RVIs.
- 4:23Wilson in this series, 5 out of 16. He has scored 3 runs, stolen 1 base.
- 4:31On the left side he can try to enter Jim Barr. Trying to give him by downing, Barr's first pitch is a strike, going 1.
- 4:41Willie leads the Major League in stolen bases, he has 74. These 3 in front of Ronald Moore of the Tigers.
- 4:49Breaking balls, chopped up to the second baseman Gritch. Flipped over to Rod Caru in time, 1 away.
- 5:00The batter Hal McCrae, Max Avery 286. 9 home runs, 16-7 runs fatted in.
- 5:06Hal McCrae having a fine series, Max is 6 for 12. He has driven in 1 run, but he has scored 7 times.
- 5:23The Angels have not played well at all defensively. Hal takes a strike, a breaking ball that got the outside edge.
- 5:29The Angels on their current road trip of 1-2, they've lost 6. And they have committed 10 errors in those 8 games.
- 5:37The opposition with 12 under and runs. There's a strike. So Hal McCrae in the hole, nothing in 2.
- 5:48Barr at the all-star break was 7-4. Since the all-star break, 2-8.
- 5:54The 0-2 pitch to Mack is, it's followed into the seats down the right field line.
- 6:00Jim Barr keeping everything away from Harold.
- 6:07George Breck will be next.
- 6:09Hal deep in the batter's box, a long way away from the plate, and he takes it inside.
- 6:20He was looking away, and he was leaning over the plate, and Barr came up and in.
- 6:27Hal almost walked into that pitch. Not that it was that close to Hal McCrae, it was close, but he was leaning, and that made the difference.
- 6:35Another fast ball in too tight, two balls in too strength.
- 6:44No score, bottom of the first inning. The Angels go home to play Texas, the Royals leave home to play the Oakland A's.
- 6:52The 2-2 pitch. Struck him out, he finally came back on the outside corner with a slider, and after the two fast balls inside, the slider away got him.
- 7:01Two-way, here's George Breck.
- 7:05George has up this average to 3-33.
- 7:0921 home runs, 103 RBI, and he's having some series.
- 7:15He is 7 for 12 against the Angels in the three games.
- 7:19Three RBI's and five runs scored.
- 7:22Jim Barr's pitch is a slider outside, one ball in no strike.
- 7:27George continues to lead the league in hits, runs, and triples.
- 7:36His overall average against the Angels is here, 3-50.
- 7:40Outside the George, two balls in no strike.
- 7:44Barr trying to retire the Royals 1-2-3, the 2-0 pitch.
- 7:51Took something off a breaking ball and got it over.
- 7:54In 25 innings in this series,
- 7:58Angel pitching has retired the Royals in order to get the ball out of the way.
- 8:04In 25 innings in this series, Angel pitching has retired the Royals in order twice.
- 8:15That's all. George is flinging a miss, and they can't even drive it two balls and two strikes.
- 8:21The Royals went in order Monday night in the fourth inning, in the sixth inning last night against Nolan Ryan.
- 8:29But in every other inning in this series, they've had at least one base runner.
- 8:34The pitch to George is outside, and the count goes full free two.
- 8:45Three balls, two strikes, bases empty, two outs.
- 8:48Darrell Porter waiting to hit next.
- 8:51Sign given by Brian Downing, the line by Barr in the pitch.
- 8:55He's stuck him out, he kept the ball away from him, and the Royals do go down 1-2-3, Bar gets two strikeouts.
- 9:02After one inning, at Royals Stadium, no score.
- 9:11We go to the second inning, no score. Don Baylor, Rod Garoo and Brian Downing coming up against Craig Chamberlain.
- 9:17The Angels went in order in the first, so did the Royals.
- 9:20Final score in the first to two at Shea Stadium.
- 9:23The Montreal Expos scored four runs in the eighth inning, and beat the Mets six to three.
- 9:29Murray the winner, five and nine, reared in the loser, one and two.
- 9:33The Pirates lost to the Phillies, so Montreal and Pittsburgh are going to tie for first now.
- 9:38And at the Expos, when their second game, they leave.
- 9:41Warm drive, deep refield, that goes Willie, she's gone. A home run for Don Baylor.
- 9:47His 35th ball run on Craig Chamberlain's first pitch in the second inning.
- 9:53Don Baylor hit a line drive over the wall in left field.
- 9:56Baylor had been very quiet in his series, he was just two for 11.
- 10:00That he muscled up and got it over the wall in left, and the Angels lead one to nothing.
- 10:05The seventh ball run off Craig Chamberlain this year.
- 10:09Here's Rod Garoo, and Garoo, like Baylor, has been conspicuous by his absence.
- 10:16Rod Garoo just two out of twelve.
- 10:20Craig Chamberlain goes to work on Rod, and it's slowing him side, one ball and no strike.
- 10:28That gives Baylor 179 hits and 136 RBI.
- 10:34Why ball center field, Amazota's position perfectly.
- 10:37Hardly has to move, but he makes the catch.
- 10:44Here's Brian Downing to capture.
- 10:47Brian hitting 328 with 11 owners, 69 RBI.
- 11:01Downing in the series has gone three for 11.
- 11:05One of the three hits all run.
- 11:07Outside to the right-handed batter, one ball and no strike.
- 11:15Bay says empty, one out, one run in.
- 11:18Chamberlain's pitch to Downing is a strike.
- 11:25Toronto leading Boston four-nuping after five innings in Toronto.
- 11:29Tony Salida Homer, former Royal.
- 11:31Tom Bergmeier, former Royal, now pitching to the Red Sox.
- 11:36Breaking ball from Chamberlain is fouled away by Brian Downing.
- 11:42Lower deck on the first base side, one and two on the angel catcher.
- 11:49Lane A, homer for Baltimore, his 19th in the second inning with the man on Detroit 3, Baltimore 2.
- 11:58One, two, pitch to Downing, his foul back to the three to Downing really went after that pitch.
- 12:08He seldom gets cheated.
- 12:10He swings as hard as anybody in the league.
- 12:19Steve Kepf swings awfully hard.
- 12:22Kestremski used to.
- 12:24Just missed the outside corner to Chamberlain, two balls and two strikes on Brian Downing.
- 12:28Bob Gutsch to follow.
- 12:34Don Baylor hit Chamberlain's first pitch of the inning over the wall and left.
- 12:40The two-two pitch, foul ball back to the screen.
- 12:44Craig challenged him with a fast ball up around the letter, and Downing's answer was a hard swing and a foul ball.
- 12:53The angels are hitting 253 against the Royals as a team, and now have 14 home runs.
- 13:03Here's the two-two pitch.
- 13:05Lined into left field, Willie on the move towards the foul line, he makes the catch.
- 13:14That's two out, here's Bobby Gutsch, the second baseman.
- 13:17Gutsch hit a 295 with 27 home runs, 93 RBI.
- 13:28The Royals trailing by two games with 10 to play.
- 13:38Craig Chamberlain's pitch to Gutsch didn't want to go around, but he did.
- 13:42No balls and a strike.
- 13:45In the season series, the Royals have won five and have lost four.
- 13:49The angels have won four out of six here at Royal Stadium.
- 13:54Chamberlain just missed the outside corner, one-and-one.
- 14:04One ball and one strike on Bob Gutsch.
- 14:07A 295 hitter.
- 14:09The swings and fouls fifth from the count of one and two. Gutsch has 27 home runs, 93 RBI.
- 14:17Come on out at Oakland, Paul Spuddorf against Rick Limeford.
- 14:21Saturday afternoon, Dennis Leonard against Matthew, Larry Gura hooks up against Mike Morgan on Sunday afternoon.
- 14:28Lowering away to Gutsch.
- 14:33Then it's into out of high and four.
- 14:35Wednesday night, back home to close off the regular schedule against the A's.
- 14:40Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
- 14:43Rick cleans his mistake out and that's the end of it.
- 14:46One run on one hit, the home run by John Baylor.
- 14:49We go to the bottom of the second. The angels won, the Royals nothing.
- 14:53California won, the Royals nothing as we move to the bottom of the second.
- 14:56Darrell Porter leads off against Jim Barr.
- 14:58Darrell hit him 291, he has 108 RBI's, the money home run.
- 15:04And what a very easy as having.
- 15:06Darrell Porter has gone 6 for 12, has scored three runs and in the three games has 10 RBI's.
- 15:19Joey's averaged a little better than three runs per game.
- 15:24Jim Barr retired the Royals in order in the first.
- 15:27The right hander goes to work on Darrell and finds the outside corner with his slider.
- 15:31Darrell's is down, the pitch is outside.
- 15:35Nick Brevick and calling the balls and strikes.
- 15:42The 0-1 pitch on the corner, outside 0-2.
- 15:47Darrell still leading the Lincoln walks.
- 15:50He's gone 107.
- 15:56The 0-2 pitch missed the outside edge of the kneecaps.
- 16:01We mentioned Darrell's last three games over his last five.
- 16:05He's gone 8 for 19.
- 16:07That figures out to a 421 average.
- 16:10And it's here to lead 11.
- 16:12Down ball, hey, 6-0 center.
- 16:14Darrell Porter down to 4-1 center, the Royals have their first base runners.
- 16:19Joey's 7 out of 13 in the series and here's Steve Lacoste.
- 16:24Steve is hitting 284.
- 16:28Three home runs, 53 RBI's.
- 16:32Steve's 5 out of 13 in the three games with three RBI's, three run scores.
- 16:45The tying run at first was nobody out here in the bottom of the second.
- 16:49The left-handed batter at the plate bar's pitches, outside 1 ball and no strikes.
- 16:54Richie Dower homers for Baltimore in the second inning of the field, but he out in sight.
- 16:58Baltimore 5-3 in the second inning of Detroit.
- 17:051 ball, no strikes on Lacoste.
- 17:07The crowd's starting to come alive.
- 17:09There goes the runner, hitting around and swinging a miss.
- 17:11Throw to second and Darrell is going to be out.
- 17:14Bobby Gritch took the throw, so on a hit and run play, Steve Lacoste flung and missed.
- 17:20And downing throughout Darrell Porter's second base.
- 17:23And that's the first oil to be thrown out by Brian Downing in this series.
- 17:27The Royals have nine stolen bases.
- 17:31That's not a bad percentage if you can steal nine out of every ten times,
- 17:35but you've got one heck of a running game.
- 17:38The Pita's outside, two balls and one strike.
- 17:49Jim Barr's pattern to the left-handed hitter is pretty obvious.
- 17:52He's keeping everything away as he did that pitch too far away, ball three.
- 17:56Three and one.
- 17:58At second game at State Stadium, Scott Sanderson will pitch for Montreal.
- 18:01He's eight and seven.
- 18:03Scott makes the start for the Mets.
- 18:05He's one and one.
- 18:06Montreal wins if they move past the Pirates in the first place in the National League East.
- 18:11The three-one pitch to Pita.
- 18:14Right.
- 18:15And Pita's unhappy.
- 18:18Boy, Jim Barr is just making that outside hit and keeping everything down, at least to this point.
- 18:28Amazotus will be next.
- 18:30Three balls, two strikes, armed Lacoste.
- 18:32Here's the pitch.
- 18:34Bouncing ball, shortstop.
- 18:36Up with the ball, Anderson on the first-in-time.
- 18:39Jimmy Hebdo.
- 18:40He starts to his right, going to the hole for Pita.
- 18:42Lacoste's down ball.
- 18:44Two oils gone and here is Amazotus.
- 18:46Amaz's batting average is 295.
- 18:49He has 18 home runs, 89 RBI.
- 18:52Amaz got in the series.
- 18:56Well, he's four out of 14.
- 18:58Four runs short and one run bad at end.
- 19:02Amaz!
- 19:09Take no given.
- 19:10Here's the line by Jim Barr in the pitch.
- 19:12Power ball into the upper deck, down the right field line.
- 19:15Nothing at one.
- 19:20Trinal leading Boston sixth in nothing.
- 19:22Now as Rick Serona's home hurt is seven.
- 19:24They are in the sixth.
- 19:26No balls and one strike on Amazotus.
- 19:30Bar deals off speed breaking ball, grounded to short.
- 19:34Anderson up with the ball over to Rod Karoo in time.
- 19:37Side retired.
- 19:38One hit, no runs.
- 19:39The Royals leave.
- 19:40None in the inning.
- 19:42And the score at the end of two.
- 19:44California Angels one, the Royals nothing.
- 19:51The Angels leave one to nothing after two innings.
- 19:53Before we go to the third, let's pause for station identification.
- 19:57This is the Kansas City Royals Radio Network.
- 20:01This is the American Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 20:13Denny Matthews along with Fred White and producer and engineer at Shepherd
- 20:16at Royals Radio.
- 20:17A horse in final game of the series.
- 20:19The Angels leaving by the score of one to nothing.
- 20:22Don Baylor's home run is what separates the two teams after two.
- 20:25So, it's the third we go.
- 20:27Here's Fred.
- 20:28All right, thank you Denny.
- 20:29Larry Harlow leads it off.
- 20:30To be followed by Jim Anderson, the number nine hitter
- 20:33than Rick Miller, the center fielder.
- 20:35Great shape of the winds, the first pitch to Harlow.
- 20:37Left handed batter swings and misses one strike to cap.
- 20:40Harlow hitting 205.
- 20:42No homers, a dozen runs, bad it is.
- 20:46The Angels missing regular right fielder Dan Ford
- 20:49who's out with a bruised side tonight.
- 20:53All outside one to one.
- 20:56Earlier in the series, Willie Aiken suffered a damaged knee
- 20:59when sent home.
- 21:00And today the Angels required Ralph Garh
- 21:02who's operating as her designated hitter tonight.
- 21:04One-one pitch to Harlow.
- 21:06Wing and a miss.
- 21:07He's losing a fast ball of time.
- 21:08One and two to cap.
- 21:10Each team has a hit.
- 21:11The Angels lead one to nothing.
- 21:12Their hit on Baylor's 35th home run.
- 21:16Now, where the Royals have had some offense in this series.
- 21:22One-two pitch.
- 21:24All outside two and two.
- 21:26In the three games played today,
- 21:28the Royals have scored 26 runs on 42 hits.
- 21:31The Angels 14 runs with 22 hits.
- 21:34But through the first two innings tonight,
- 21:36Jim Barr has looked like a million-dollar pitcher.
- 21:40The Royals have been ineffective.
- 21:42There's a line drive in the left center field.
- 21:44That's going to flood the gap.
- 21:46Willie Wilson trying to cut it off,
- 21:47but it's all the way to the wall.
- 21:48And Harlow at second base, round second,
- 21:50he's going to try for three.
- 21:51Here he comes, the throw, not in time.
- 21:54Willie Harlow triples in the left center field,
- 21:56and the Angels have their lead off man at third.
- 22:00Had a chance to get something more done
- 22:02against Craig Shaberman.
- 22:03Very nice.
- 22:05And the way Jim Barr is pitching every run looks big right now.
- 22:09Jim Anderson, the shortstop, the number nine hitter.
- 22:14And Craig Shaberman now in need of a strikeout or a pop-up.
- 22:18The Royals play the infield back.
- 22:28Anderson hitting 254.
- 22:31Three home runs, he had one last night.
- 22:3419 RBI's.
- 22:36Craig Shaberman has to belt the pitch.
- 22:40Ball outside, ball one.
- 22:43Anderson against the Royals, seven for 22 this year.
- 22:47Right hander against right hander.
- 22:50Angels lead one nothing, they threaten again.
- 22:52Here's the stretch and the pitch.
- 22:54Way outside, ball two to an O.
- 23:11The pitch again.
- 23:13Fly ball left center field, Amos Otis running towards the gap
- 23:16is there, reaches up and makes the catch.
- 23:19It'll score the run down the line to score comes Anderson.
- 23:22Red Harlow is Anderson hitting the ball hard in the deep left center field
- 23:25and sacrifice flying, he drives in his 20th run of the year.
- 23:29The center field of the Eagles were hitting the ball fairly hard
- 23:31against Craig Shaberman.
- 23:34So the early indications in this ball game don't look all that good.
- 23:37Two to nothing California.
- 23:39Now one out, nobody on, Rick Miller the hitter.
- 23:41He was out on the fly ball to center his first time up.
- 23:45Soon to stadium, check the Royals outfield.
- 23:47They play him way around the off the way.
- 23:52Ball misses ball one.
- 23:53Bottom of the second, Baltimore.
- 23:56After trailing three to nothing scored five in the top of the second.
- 23:59They now lead Detroit five to three.
- 24:02After six Toronto, six Boston nothing.
- 24:04Minnesota beat New York three to one today.
- 24:10Ball high two and O.
- 24:12The Phillies beat the Pirates and Montreal won the first game
- 24:15of their double header from the Mets.
- 24:18Or the Expo staying right with the Pirates.
- 24:23Two old pitch, right call two and one.
- 24:31Montreal wanted the moment dead even with the Pirates.
- 24:34The pitch again.
- 24:36Bowled on a play down the left field line now two and two.
- 24:39Montreal has played two left games in Pittsburgh.
- 24:42They'll make one of those up in the double headers tonight.
- 24:48They have played a ton of double headers.
- 24:50They have six games to make up.
- 24:52Starting just about ten days in the game.
- 24:55They're going to be playing a lot of double headers.
- 24:58They're going to be playing a lot of double headers.
- 25:00They're going to be playing a lot of double headers.
- 25:02Starting just about ten days ago.
- 25:07Chamberlain ready to deal but Miller backs out of the batter's box.
- 25:17The Angels have two hits but one of them is home run by Baylor.
- 25:20The other triple by Harlow.
- 25:21They have the two to nothing lead.
- 25:22Two to pitch.
- 25:23Hit him on the fifth, he fouls it back out of play still two and two.
- 25:40Look, Miller hitting a two eighty four.
- 25:43Right on the back line of the batter's box.
- 25:45Chamberlain's two to pitch.
- 25:47Missed the outside corner for a count three and two.
- 25:51Great Chamberlain hasn't walked anybody but he has not had the control that he normally has.
- 25:56He's been behind some hitters.
- 25:58He's obviously missed the spot a couple of times with Baylor and Harlow.
- 26:02Here's the three to pitch.
- 26:04Fastball foul out of play.
- 26:06Still three and two.
- 26:08Will Salusa cook play dealers?
- 26:24Going to pick up the sign from Porter.
- 26:26Here comes the three to pitch to Rick Miller.
- 26:28Strike three call.
- 26:29They got him looking.
- 26:30Strike out number three for Craig Chamberlain.
- 26:35And here's Connie Lansford who has just strike out victim his first time up.
- 26:40Chamberlain changing speeds a bit that time.
- 26:43Got Rick Miller looking on a three to pitch.
- 26:45Now two out, nobody odd and you'll deal with Lansford at two ninety three hitters.
- 26:51Right handed batter, aggressive hitter.
- 26:54Good hitter.
- 26:55Seventeen homers, he's driven in seventy two.
- 26:58Bouncing ball to Brett.
- 27:00George charging.
- 27:01Lansford can run but the close on time and he hitting his over.
- 27:04Lansford out third to first.
- 27:06The angels can run on a hit.
- 27:07They can actually lead on dribble.
- 27:08They go to the bottom of the third.
- 27:09California two, the Royals up there.
- 27:17Bottom of the third, hitting nothing, California.

- 28:17Lasted only four and two-thirds innings.
- 28:22Change of pace and it's in for a strike two and two at off-speed breaking ball.
- 28:25The Royals won that ball game 13-4.
- 28:27They scored seven runs in the eighth inning.
- 28:31After Barr was gone.
- 28:35Boy he has something so far tonight.
- 28:37Here's the two-two pitch.
- 28:38Outside ball count three and two.
- 28:42The Royals have averaged 14 hits a game in the first three games of the series
- 28:45and he has just strangled them so far tonight.

- 29:00There comes with the Cardinals two to nothing.
- 29:05The ball is in the corner.
- 29:07The ball is in the corner.
- 29:09The ball is in the corner.
- 29:11The ball is in the corner.
- 29:13The ball is in the corner.
- 29:15The ball is in the corner.
- 29:20Jim Ries as it is 39th all-run and the seventh inning with a man on.
- 29:23It's now for Rotto 6 plus and two.
- 29:26The X throws a miss underway with their second game.
- 29:29Nothing, nothing after the inning.
- 29:31Montreal won the first game.
- 29:32The pitch to Frank White.
- 29:33Bouncing ball high chopper over the first base and there they set left field.

- 29:48Five to three ball to more after two from Blake.
- 29:53Here's you well.
- 29:54They had a tough night last night.
- 29:56Nolan Ryan struck him out four times.
- 29:58Four times up.
- 30:02One for eight in a series now.
- 30:04He's been playing good shortstop.
- 30:06Now it's up on the left side hitting 244.
- 30:14No doubt you will would like to atone some for last night right here.
- 30:17Bow's one back out of play.
- 30:19One strike.
- 30:20One strike.
- 30:32Blake at first with 23 stolen bases.
- 30:35He's been caught just a half dozen times.
- 30:39They say played at the moment.
- 30:41The pitch to Washington is outside one to one.
- 30:51The White House have been doing some running in this series.
- 30:56Frank doesn't look like he's going right now.
- 30:59Now he edges away a bit.
- 31:01Makes a false start.
- 31:02That blow not in time.
- 31:03He got back.
- 31:04Well he started to go.
- 31:06That bar wheeled and fired the first in Frank.
- 31:09He was leading towards second.
- 31:11Really showed some reflexes getting back to first base.
- 31:15Now he comes over to talk to first base coach Steve Orr.
- 31:19And kind of gather himself together a bit.
- 31:23Frank had made his move.
- 31:27Some reflexes him getting back to first just then.
- 31:32He was almost picked off.
- 31:34Well he will soon next.
- 31:35Barring the double play.
- 31:37He's got nothing California at the bottom of the third.
- 31:40Downing through the signs for his right hander.
- 31:43Bar into the stretch.
- 31:45Frank likes the pitch.
- 31:47Well it's going to button this.
- 31:49He's going to hold now one and two.
- 31:51So Bar has the advantage in the count.
- 31:56He hasn't even come close to walking anybody.
- 32:01He's ready again.
- 32:02Here's the stretch, the one two pitch.
- 32:03Throw the first and seventh Frank right back.
- 32:06I'll tell you what Jim Barr is not lobbing the ball to first.
- 32:08He's making very serious moves that way.
- 32:11He's not going to go to the right.
- 32:13He's going to go to the right.
- 32:15He's going to go to the right.
- 32:17He's going to go to the right.
- 32:19He's making very serious moves that way.
- 32:22Bar of Edmunds.
- 32:28He's 31 years old now.
- 32:306'3", 205.
- 32:32He's in his prime.
- 32:34Here's...
- 32:35Bar started to go into his wind-up.
- 32:37The stretch right there and then back off the rubber.
- 32:40All of a sudden he seemed to be uncomfortable.
- 32:52Now we're ready again.
- 32:53Here's the one two pitch to UL Washington.
- 32:56Now back to the screen still one and two.
- 33:17Frank White edges away again at first.
- 33:19About a half step shy of the artificial turf.
- 33:22Now Bar ready.
- 33:24Back off the rubber to run Frank White back.
- 33:27Boy Bar working like the chickens to keep Frank White close over there.
- 33:30Now Washington backs out of the batter's box.
- 33:35Bar trying to help set down the Royal Running Game
- 33:38which has been quite a force in the first three games of the series.
- 33:43Again, Frank with a safe lead.
- 33:45Here's the stretch by Bar.
- 33:47There goes Frank, the pitch outside.
- 33:49Downing through the second.
- 33:51Now he's got a stolen...
- 33:56quite a duel between Jim Bar and Frank White.
- 33:59But Frank winds up with his 24th stolen base of the year
- 34:03and the big one it is because he's in scoring position now.
- 34:06Trying downing them out to talk to Jim Bar a little bit.
- 34:24That's Frank White's fourth stolen base in this series
- 34:27for the Royals number 10.
- 34:29The only man who's been caught was Darrell Porter in the second.
- 34:32That was a blessed hit run.
- 34:34Now two and two to UL Washington.
- 34:37They hit, cuts the angel lead in half right here.
- 34:40Bar into a stretch.
- 34:42Two, two pitch.
- 34:44Ball three outside full count, three and two to UL.
- 34:48And Bar just missed that corner.
- 34:50He's asking the play down fire, Nick Bremigans.
- 34:53Was that pitch outside?
- 34:55Bremigans nods his head, yes.
- 34:57Bar thought he had the corner.
- 34:59Oh, big pitch coming.
- 35:01Frank White at second base, one out.
- 35:03Full count to Washington.
- 35:05Now UL backs up at the batter's box just a moment.
- 35:08Bremigans unfolding rather slowly here in the bottom of the third.
- 35:11The angels in front of the Royals two nothing.
- 35:14Here's the stretch, three, two pitch.
- 35:18Now back just below us, still three and two.
- 35:24This is game number 153, just nine to go after tonight.
- 35:29The angels go home to play the Texas Rangers three.
- 35:32They go to Oakland for three with the eight.
- 35:35The angels and the angels kept together for three in Ennire.
- 35:38And then the Royals come home to face the eight for three
- 35:40while the angels go to Texas to finish out the season
- 35:43with three against the Rangers.
- 35:45Three, two pitch to Washington.
- 35:47Bouncing ball back to the mound.
- 35:49They are going to go to first now.
- 35:51They looked at second base where Frank White was almost cut off,
- 35:53but they left it to go to first.
- 35:55White holds it second.
- 35:57The play goes one-three.
- 35:59Frank White is second with two out for Willie Wilson,
- 36:02who grounded his second his first time up.
- 36:05You will hit it rather sharply, but right back to the pitcher.
- 36:09Willie with a sixth game hitting streak, five for 18 in this series.
- 36:14He was two for two against Jim Barr when he faced him in California.
- 36:18The boy Jim Barr was a much different pitcher that night.
- 36:22In fact, Willie let off that game with a single
- 36:25short and the first inning of the Royals took an immediate lead.
- 36:29Far from the stretch, the pitch to Willie.
- 36:32Inside ball one.
- 36:46Willie, as you know, a switch hitter up on the left side.
- 36:49In close to the plate, here's the stretch, the pitch.
- 36:53Ball two outside, two at a.
- 36:56And Barr not quite as sharp in this inning with his control
- 36:59as he has been through the first two.
- 37:01He's not bad, but he's just not as sharp as he was.
- 37:08Barr fidgeting.
- 37:10Going to all parts of his uniform.
- 37:13The Royals and everybody else accused him of loading the ball up.
- 37:16White, he was thrown out of the game the last time.
- 37:18Barr pitched against him in fact.
- 37:20The Royals as well as the second, flanked white back in time.
- 37:26Wilson's average, 3-14.
- 37:31A 3-64 hitter against California.
- 37:35So he's been tapped on the edge.
- 37:38Barr taking a lot of time.
- 37:40Goes to his uniform, now to his cap, now to his uniform pants.
- 37:45And now looks in for the side.
- 37:47And the stretch, to a pitch to Willie.
- 37:50Bind base in left field, flanked white, turning around third.
- 37:54And later for the third and second to keep Willie a first
- 37:56in the two to one ball game.
- 37:58Wilson singles and the Royals are on the board.
- 38:01Wins the game.
- 38:15Everything is here, now back right.
- 38:19Once again the stolen base pays the dividend.
- 38:22Flank white single, steal second.
- 38:24And Willie Wilson caches it in.
- 38:26Willie who is stolen more bases than anybody in baseball.
- 38:30On the other end of it that time, getting the RBI.
- 38:33And now we'll see what Willie's up to.
- 38:36Hal McCrae the hitter, he was called out on strikes this
- 38:38for a time up, Willie has a good lead.
- 38:40He's at the edge of the artificial curve.
- 38:42Stretched by Barr, throw the first Willie back.
- 38:45Wilson is stolen 74 this year.
- 38:51And he has stolen 34 of his last 35 attempts.
- 38:55He's edging away.
- 38:57Hal McCrae, deep in the batter's box waiting.
- 39:02Throw the first Willie back.
- 39:05Boy, Barr just carved McCrae up his first time at the plate.
- 39:09Got two strikes on him pitching away, came in hard flight.
- 39:12Then got him looking with a slider away.
- 39:15And Hal McCrae a very intelligent hitter.
- 39:18Obviously would be up there with a thought right now.
- 39:22First thought probably is what Willie steals second if he can.
- 39:27Second thought is he probably can.
- 39:30Stretched by Barr, Willie not going to pitch his inside.
- 39:33Ball runs so Barr started him inside that time.
- 39:36George Brevin, he on deck circle.
- 39:38Now two to one, California.
- 39:40He outfields straight away.
- 39:42Downing puts down the sign.
- 39:45Bars about.
- 39:47There goes Willie, the pitch is outside.
- 39:49Throw the second.
- 39:51He's got it stolen.
- 39:53Number 75 for Willie Wilson.
- 39:56Well the Royals case went earlier.
- 39:59Now Willie steals it.
- 40:01He represents the tying one with two out.
- 40:03And Hal McCrae as the catcher.
- 40:06Now he's got it stolen.
- 40:08Now he's got a house and the three red golds.
- 40:12And he represents the tying one with two out.
- 40:13And Hal McCrae.
- 40:17That's a count here's way in two and oh
- 40:20Only four players before Willie Wilson.
- 40:23An American league history of ever stolen 75.
- 40:25Wide Milan at he compromise middle north.
- 40:29Bill North.
- 40:30And the crowd giving Willie a standing ovation to pick the match.
- 40:39Round ball up the middle base, hip center field.
- 40:42Wilson's going to score on the Royals and pop the Angels in the bottom of the third.
- 40:46And Willie Wilson clapping in the hip hole plate and look at the dugout.
- 40:51Oh you would think it's a nice inning.
- 40:53The running game giving the Royals a big, big lift.
- 40:57And Jim Barr looking like he had him shut off to the first two.
- 41:01And all of a sudden the Royals rise up with two singles and two stolen bases make passion both.
- 41:06And out comes manager Jim Fragosi now to talk to his right-hander Jim Barr.
- 41:17Hip throughly.
- 41:18Remember that.
- 41:19That's the Royals coming back in his inning with some intensity.
- 41:26And the Royals are running, forcing things and making them happen and then cashing them in.
- 41:30Two stolen bases in the inning and they cash in both.
- 41:34And Willie Wilson keys the inning with a two out single that drives home the first run
- 41:39and stealing a base and scoring the second one.
- 41:46We mentioned the three who had stolen 75 previously.
- 41:49Clyde Myland did it twice.
- 41:51Eddie Collins that was in 1909 and 1911.
- 41:57Eddie Collins did it in 1910, Bill North in 1976.
- 42:02So Willie Wilson is only the second American Ligur in the last 64 years
- 42:08and only the fifth in history to ever do it.
- 42:11Steal 75 in here.
- 42:13Now McCrea first with two out here, George Thred.
- 42:15George struck out his first time up.
- 42:20Two out, bottom of the third, two two tie.
- 42:25Action in the California full pen.
- 42:27The pitch to Brett way outside and high and Barr missing badly with the pitch for the first time tonight.
- 42:33This is raw baseball.
- 42:34The wind is no factor.
- 42:36It's not blowing.
- 42:37It will help neither hitter nor pitcher.
- 42:44Barr to Belp.
- 42:45The pitch to Brett.
- 42:46Strike on the outside corner one and one.
- 42:49George comes back showing the good control they had earlier.
- 42:52George at 332 with 21 home runs, 103 batted in.
- 42:58Started the night just five points behind Fred Lin and the American Ligur batting rate.
- 43:05There's the stretch by the right-hander.
- 43:07One one pitch.
- 43:09Bouncing ball to the second baseman, Bob Gritch.
- 43:11Shoubles to the shortstop but the four south, the inning is over.
- 43:14But the Royals get two runs on three hits with a couple of stolen bases.
- 43:19They leave a man.
- 43:20At the end of three, the Royals two to the angels two.
- 43:27We cover the fourth.
- 43:28The Royals have caught the angels we're tied to the Royals about hitting four to two.
- 43:33And leading off for California Ralph Gar.
- 43:36That's right.
- 43:37Ralph Gar.
- 43:38They're partying this afternoon for the Chicago White Sox.
- 43:40He popped the short his first time up.
- 43:43The left-handed batter hitting 280.
- 43:46Nine home runs, 39 batted in.
- 43:49He is right on top of home plate.
- 43:53David throws a fastball and Gar waxes it in the right field for a base hit.
- 43:59Left-handed batter, he had his right foot right on the plate practically.
- 44:03So Gar singles right and he hit it hard.
- 44:07The angels get the lead run aboard to start the fourth and here's Don Baylor, who home-run his first time up.
- 44:17Baylor now hitting 301 with 35 home-runs, 136 batted in.
- 44:21He leaves the American League and that department.
- 44:28Jim Rice is in the two run home-run so he's at least eight in front of Rice.
- 44:33Gar with good speed but not a good base-sealer.
- 44:37He's stolen two and then caught four times in this year.
- 44:41He's a step shy of the artificial turf.
- 44:44Looks like he wants to run to throw to Baylor.
- 44:46Low block by Porter.
- 44:47Gar not going anywhere.
- 44:48Want to know.
- 44:51The outfield plays Baylor deep in the fall.
- 44:55Pretty good place to play him.
- 45:00He went deep with it the first time.
- 45:05Boy, Baylor a rare combination of speed and power.
- 45:10He is big, he can run.
- 45:13What a pitch to him.
- 45:15High fly ball, shallow center.
- 45:17Washington backing out the shortstop calling for it.
- 45:20Makes the catch one away.
- 45:22Gar will hold it first.
- 45:23So Table and Kesson later on to pop up the short will pause 10 seconds for station identification.
- 45:28This is the Royals Baseball Network.
- 45:31This is the American Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 45:42I've Karoova hit her now.
- 45:43He was out on a fly ball to center his first time.
- 45:47Karoova's average 313, 3 homers 43 battered in.
- 45:54Get hit her.
- 45:59Chamberlain ready to pitch to Karoova.
- 46:01Ball high.
- 46:03Want to know.
- 46:09The only American Lake final Minnesota B.J. York this afternoon 3 to 1 in a make up game.
- 46:16Chamberlain to Belchek's guard first to pitch.
- 46:19Blue takes outside ball 2.
- 46:262-2 tied, top of the fourth.
- 46:28Ralph Gar is first with one out.
- 46:30And a tough, tough, tough hitter in there.
- 46:35Two old picks, there goes Gar.
- 46:37Line down the left field, line twisting foul.
- 46:41The Angels on 2 and 0 were playing hit and run.
- 46:43You think Jim Fragosi didn't want that ball to be fair?
- 46:45He came out of the dugout to look down the line.
- 46:48Fragosi was about three steps out of the dugout looking it over.
- 46:59You think both sides think this game means something tonight?
- 47:03Two balls and a strike to Karoova.
- 47:06He is 2 for 13 in this series and that scares you a little bit.
- 47:10Chamberlain now throws the first, Gar back.
- 47:14The Bits, Karoova hits a high fly ball left field in shallow.
- 47:25Wilson coming, he's there.
- 47:27He's got it.
- 47:28Gar retreats to first to Gar.
- 47:30Go Chamberlain.
- 47:33Gets Faber and Karoova now faces Bryan Downing who lined to left his first time up.
- 47:38Gar is first with two out.
- 47:40Bryan quiet in the sea a couple of words to Craig Chamberlain.
- 47:44Boston batting to top of the ninth in Toronto, the Blue Jays lead 6-2.
- 47:49Baltimore batting to top of the fourth Detroit.
- 47:51Baltimore five, the Tigers three.
- 47:58The Orioles magic number is three.
- 48:03Bryan Downing right handed that her in.
- 48:05Chamberlain's pitch.
- 48:06Fast ball for a strike on the other part of the plate 0-1.
- 48:12Tomorrow night in Oakland, Paul Spidore against Rick Langford.
- 48:17Whitey Herzog at 9-10 tomorrow night.
- 48:24Good, the first runner back.
- 48:26That's it 9-10 and a headed check.
- 48:33The Orange Angels are home tomorrow night to play the Texas Ranger.
- 48:38The pitch.
- 48:40Swinging into this.
- 48:42I was due to Downing and if he ever take a lift he would fly across home plate.
- 48:49He almost simply swung the bat so hard.
- 48:54He's a right-handed batter and he wound up on the first base side of the batter's box.
- 48:59You think there'll be some scoreboard watching on the West Coast tomorrow night?
- 49:05Part two of your question.
- 49:06Do you think the Oakland scoreboard will work?
- 49:13This is the stretch.
- 49:140-2 pitch.
- 49:16Lowered outside ball.
- 49:17When you're really taken down that big scoreboard in Anaheim, the big A.
- 49:21And they're operating with a high school type scoreboard.
- 49:26They've got it above the left field fence.
- 49:29A little electric kind.
- 49:33They'll be announcing the score in Anaheim a lot.
- 49:35Here's the stretch.
- 49:361-2 pitch to Brian Downing.
- 49:37There goes the runner.
- 49:38Pitch is popped up.
- 49:39Now territory playable.
- 49:41Darrell Porter off of the bat.
- 49:42He's got it.
- 49:43The inning is over.
- 49:44So Grape Stabler works around the leadoff single by Gar.
- 49:48He gets Baylor to reel and Downing.
- 49:50Now runs the hit.
- 49:51A man left to the bottom of the fourth way goes.
- 49:53The Royal's two and the Angels two.
- 50:01Bottom of the fourth at 2-2 tie.
- 50:03Darrell Porter will lead it off.
- 50:04He's single this first time up.
- 50:09Offensively in this series.
- 50:11Willie Wilson is now six for 19.
- 50:13He's scored four runs.
- 50:15Kyle McCray is now seven for 14.
- 50:18George Brevitt is seven for 14.
- 50:20Darrell Porter seven for 13.
- 50:22LaCotte five for 13.
- 50:24Frank White five for 13.
- 50:27The Royal's have had some offensive work.
- 50:29Barr to Porter.
- 50:31Outside took something off of it.
- 50:33Ball one.
- 50:34Ordered LaCotte Otis in the bottom of the fourth.
- 50:38The Royal's about hit California.
- 50:40Four to three.
- 50:41They're tied 2-2.
- 50:42Barnes pitch to Porter.
- 50:44Breaking ball low two and 0.
- 50:47Darrell hitting 2-93.
- 50:4921-20 home runs.
- 50:50108 RBI.
- 50:52He's just four RBI's shy of the Royal team record.
- 50:55112 set by Al Cowan.
- 50:572-0 pitch.
- 50:58Low ball three 3-0.
- 51:01So Barr who had tremendous control of the first two innings.
- 51:08Now falling behind Darrell Porter 3-0.
- 51:11Here's the pitch.
- 51:12He walked him on fourth three.
- 51:14Darrell Porter draws the base on balls.
- 51:16He'll lead off the Royal half of the fourth inning.
- 51:18So the lead run is on for the Royal.
- 51:20It was for the Angels to start the top of the fourth.
- 51:23And Craig Sable and Schecter.
- 51:25Darrell Porter now has walked 108 times this year.
- 51:28He's living in 108 runs.
- 51:30He has scored 96.
- 51:35Pete Matoc grounded as short his first time up.
- 51:38As a five game innings three going.
- 51:43Stretched by Barr the fish.
- 51:45Strike on the outside corner to Pete Matoc.
- 51:48So Jim Barr relocated that corner.
- 51:50Pete with a look at his third base coach, Chuck Hiller,
- 51:54who rolls through a series of signs for him.
- 51:57Rod Karoo trying to keep Porter close to first.
- 52:03Line drive towards the gap in left center.
- 52:06But Don Boehner closes the gap and makes the catch.
- 52:08It's actually more of a fly ball than a line drive.
- 52:10It stayed up.
- 52:11And Matoc is out.
- 52:12Porter holds it first.
- 52:13Now here's Ray Masodos who grabbed it as short his first time up.
- 52:21And Royal space Barr back in June.
- 52:23Otos was two for three against him with a home run and four RBI.
- 52:27Barr got him the first time up tonight.
- 52:37Happy to have Armed Forces radio with us.
- 52:40Wherever you are in the world tonight, hope you're enjoying baseball in the States.
- 52:44Pitch outside Otos, California, Asia, Kansas City Royals.
- 52:48We're at Royal Stadium, Kansas City.
- 52:50It's a big ball game.
- 52:52After tonight nine games left in the regular season,
- 52:54the Angels at the moment two games in front of the Royals.
- 53:00So this one means something.
- 53:03Barr at the belt, the one old pitch notice.
- 53:06Round ball back to the mound might be a double play.
- 53:08Shortstop has one back to first two and the inning is over.
- 53:11One, six, three, the Angels turn it over.
- 53:14So the Royals waste the lead off walking them out of it a four.
- 53:16No runs, no hits.
- 53:17Nobody left.
- 53:18And after four, the Royals two, the Angels two.
- 53:21We go to the top of the fifth inning.
- 53:24From California it'll be Gritch, Harlow and Anderson to face Craig Chamberlain.
- 53:28Royals two, the Angels two.
- 53:30We go to the fifth and again here's Denny.
- 53:32I bet Bob Gritch has struck out he's over one in the contest.
- 53:36Two runs on four hits for the Royals, two runs on three hits for California.
- 53:40And neither team is there.
- 53:45Bobby Gritch setting himself at the plate.
- 53:50The line by Craig Chamberlain and here's the pitch.
- 53:54It's inside one ball and no strike.
- 53:57Chamberlain has three strikeouts thus far.
- 54:00Hasn't walked anybody.
- 54:05Built it into left center field, they sit willy over quickly to cut it off and Gritch will hang on with a single.
- 54:13Bob Gritch gets his fourth hit of the series.
- 54:18Now Larry Harlow's coming up.
- 54:20Larry tripled and scored in the third inning.
- 54:22The two California runs, Don Baylor a lead off homer in the second.
- 54:26Harlow started the third inning with a triple and scored on Anderson's sacrifice play.
- 54:32So for the third time in five innings, the angels have their lead off man aboard.
- 54:43Harlow checking with his third base coach, Bobby Keddaff before stepping in.
- 54:49The Royals are looking for the butt but Harlow's going to swing away and he chops one foul right at the plate.
- 54:54No balls and one strike.
- 54:59Well we would like to salute and congratulate one of our five network stations KDRO in Sedalia.
- 55:06They are celebrating their 40th birthday this month.
- 55:09They've been on the air 40 years.
- 55:10One of our original network stations KDRO.
- 55:16They're fine sports director Jimmy Glenn.
- 55:19So happy birthday to KDRO in Sedalia.
- 55:25No balls and one strike on left-handed hitting Larry Harlow.
- 55:29Bob Gritch at first caused the throw.
- 55:31Bob has a very, very conservative lead over there.
- 55:38Scoreboard totals identical.
- 55:40Two runs, four hits.
- 55:41No errors.
- 55:43Chamberlain's pitch is high.
- 55:45One ball and one strike.
- 55:51Shortstop Jim Henderson in the on-deck circle.
- 55:57This is the fourth and final game of the series.
- 56:00Royals wait the series two games to one.
- 56:04Chamberlain's 1-1 pitch to Harlow is lifted to center field.
- 56:08Well hit, the room parodas backtracking.
- 56:10Still retreating to make the catch.
- 56:13Larry Harlow flies to deep center.
- 56:15One away and up comes shortstop Jim Henderson.
- 56:19Jim Henderson got Harlow home with a scoring five all the center in the third inning.
- 56:34Better first, well away.
- 56:36Top of the fifth inning, game tied 2-2.
- 56:47A pitch to Jim Henderson is just a bit high when ball and no strike.
- 56:54Henderson was the angel of second selection in the 1975 June draft.
- 57:00Worked his way up through the angel system.
- 57:04Chamberlain's pitch is upstairs, ball two, 2-0.
- 57:10Galen Sisko pops out of the Royal dugout and heads for the mound.
- 57:20Brakes mechanics breaking down just a little bit here in the inning.
- 57:24He's been up to Jim Henderson.
- 57:26Bob Gritz started the inning with a solid single and Harlow hit the ball hard.
- 57:39Now Galen's spotting that little mechanical flaws now.
- 57:43Trying to get Craig back in the groove.
- 57:45It looks like this is an oversimplification but not following through.
- 57:49In other words, everything's ahead of the arm and the ball is up.
- 57:58Jim Henderson meanwhile checking with Bobby Canop, the coach of third, Jim Bragosi,
- 58:02watching his team from this near end of the angel dugout.
- 58:12Two balls, no strikes on.
- 58:14California shortstop Jim Henderson.
- 58:16Bob Gritz at first, went away.
- 58:18Here's the pitch, followed straight back.
- 58:20This one will get the upper deck and it's 2-1.
- 58:28Toronto defeated Boston 6-2.
- 58:30Taylor Moore the win or Inko the lost.
- 58:33Gleiss it is 39-09.
- 58:38Two balls, one strike to pitch to Henderson.
- 58:41Popped up, shallow right center field.
- 58:43Everybody chasing it.
- 58:45Al Collins coming in to make the play and they're two down.
- 58:53But Craig able to come back from the 2-0 count to Jim Henderson.
- 58:56And here's Rick Miller who applied to center in the first, was called out on strikes in the third.
- 59:06The American League leader in home runs is Milwaukee's Glamon Thomas, he has 42.
- 59:12Gleiss broke the tie with teammate Fred Lin.
- 59:16Strike on the upside edge, nothing in one on Rick Miller.
- 59:24Barney lands for DeFalo, game tied 2-2 in the top of the fifth.
- 59:28The angels got one in the second, one in the third, the Royals two in the bottom of the third.
- 59:34Gritz at first, two away, draws its row and is back standing to play rather close.
- 59:39Chamberlain has a very quick move over to first.
- 59:42And Gritz just found out all about it.
- 59:53The first single to strike the fourth inning, that he was unable to move.
- 59:59The 0-1 delivery, going inside, one ball and one strike.
- 1:00:06Here in the fifth, they'll lead off single by Bob Gritz, but now they're two out and he's still standing at first.
- 1:00:14So the angels are unable to move their base runners.
- 1:00:19Bobbie back to the bag, but oh how the Royals moved their base runners in the bottom of the third inning.
- 1:00:25The classic case of getting the most out of the least.
- 1:00:32Gritz a little bigger lead, doesn't go, the pitch to Miller is right through there and got one and two.
- 1:00:47Rick Miller against the Royals this year has just one hit and eight trips.
- 1:00:54A ball, two strikes on the left-handed hitter, Chamberlain's pitch.
- 1:00:58It's the outsides on him and it even got two balls and two strikes.
- 1:01:07The angels of 182, the Royals of 180.
- 1:01:11The angels of loss 72, the angels of loss 70.
- 1:01:19Signal given by Darrell Porter, now the 2-2 pitch on the way.
- 1:01:23Ball three, three and two.
- 1:01:27That was a big pitch for Chamberlain because now with three and two and two out, Bobbie Gritz will be off and running.
- 1:01:34Here's Karni Lansford coming up next and Chamberlain about to make a big pitch.
- 1:01:41Three and two, two out of the fifth inning. Here it comes.
- 1:01:44Brown ball, base hit left-hield.
- 1:01:46Gritz even though he was running must stop at second and here's Karni Lansford who has stuck out and bounced through the third baseman.
- 1:01:55Lansford is now one out of 13 in this series.
- 1:02:02The ball is two out of 14.
- 1:02:06Don Baylor is three out of 13.
- 1:02:11Two on, two out, a 2-2 tie in the top of the fifth.
- 1:02:22Well Craig was on in front of Rick Miller but letting him get away.
- 1:02:25The pitch to Karni Lansford is guy to center.
- 1:02:28The ball is two out of 14.
- 1:02:33Two hits, no runs, a couple of them left.
- 1:02:38We go to the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:02:42The report says Alan Eagleton has decided to refuse a request from the association to concentrate solely on the association matters.
- 1:02:55A 2-2 tie at Royal Stadium. We go to the bottom of the fifth inning and here is Al Cowan facing Jim Barr.
- 1:03:01Flying by the right-hander in the pitch.
- 1:03:03He started to go for a spider.
- 1:03:05Checked his swing but the pitch broke into the strike zone and the count is 0-1.
- 1:03:10Barr is 6'3", 215 pounder.
- 1:03:13A professional since 1970.
- 1:03:18Southern California native.
- 1:03:20Glowing outside to Cowan, 1-1. Al fly to right field his first time up.
- 1:03:28Jim Barr's best season was 1974 with the San Francisco Giants.
- 1:03:33He won 13, lost 9, had an ERA of 2.74.
- 1:03:38Seventh best in the National League. Good fast ball in the outside corner and it's 1-2.
- 1:03:44Jim Barr owns the Major League record for retiring 41 consecutive batters.
- 1:03:50That was back in 1972.
- 1:03:55Here's the 1-2 pitch. Breaking ball is down to the shortstop.
- 1:03:58Anderson gets the big hop.
- 1:04:00Over to Rod Karoo in time 1-0.
- 1:04:06Here's Frank Light.
- 1:04:08Frank started the Royal 2-1 3rd innings.
- 1:04:11He's single, stole a basin score.
- 1:04:17The Royals used 3 singles and 2 stolen bases to produce the 2-run.
- 1:04:272 runs, 5 hits for California. 2 runs, 4 hits for the Royal.
- 1:04:33Aligned by Barr and the pitch.
- 1:04:36The heartbreaking fighters is slowing away. 1 ball with no strike.
- 1:04:48Downing hangs out a sign for Jim. Here's the pitch.
- 1:04:525 ball, right center field. Well hit. Back goes Miller, back goes Harlow.
- 1:04:56Right is off the wall and down goes Harlow with a heat.
- 1:05:06Frank Light around the second on his way to third.
- 1:05:10To throw to third, not in time.
- 1:05:24Frank Light sips off the wall and right center field.
- 1:05:27And I must say this way, Harlow really didn't play the ball that well.
- 1:05:32It hit about halfway up on the wall. He would have had time perhaps to get back to the wall,
- 1:05:37but he chose to jump.
- 1:05:39And he just failed to come down to the baseball.
- 1:05:41And the Royals had a chance to take the lead with UL Washington up there.
- 1:05:45The Angels now are forced to pull their infield in for the play of the play.
- 1:05:49UL got it back to the pitcher his first time up.
- 1:05:54Jim Barr asking for time once to talk with second baseman Bob Gritt.
- 1:06:00Frank Light is two for two. Let's take the letter triple.
- 1:06:08Washington has 18 RBI.
- 1:06:15He could produce some nice speed right here. What a big one this is.
- 1:06:19He can't field in. The outfield shallow and sheeted toward left.
- 1:06:23Far's pitch squeezes on and they sense that Frank Light can chase back to third
- 1:06:28and 20 Landford takes him out.
- 1:06:32Well, they either picked off the side or gabbled in one, one of the two.
- 1:06:37The Royals were going to squeeze on the first pitch.
- 1:06:40The Royals pitched out. Frank Light was halfway between home and third when downing caught the ball.
- 1:06:45And Brian ran him back toward third, gave the ball to Landford and tagged him out.
- 1:06:52Big, big play in a big ball game.
- 1:06:57So instead of having the lead run as third and one out, the bases are empty two away.
- 1:07:05One ball, no strike. That will go as the caught ceiling.
- 1:07:09And for Brian just the seventh time this year, UL swinging away, fouled fifth.
- 1:07:15One ball and one strike.
- 1:07:25Far getting the sign from downing. Here's the one one pitch.
- 1:07:30Breaking ball is twice foul off third into the lower deck one and two.
- 1:07:45A ball to strikes on UL Washington.
- 1:07:49Ball game in the bottom of the fifth, a two two tie.
- 1:07:54The second bar brings it home. Fastball missed away two and two.
- 1:08:01Jim was the giant second pick in the summer of 1970.
- 1:08:05The giant's first draft choice that summer was a fellow by the name of Dave Kingman.
- 1:08:15Two balls, two strikes, two out.
- 1:08:23The last two is catcher, the two two pitch to Washington.
- 1:08:26Missed, low and outside, three and two.
- 1:08:32Well, the Royals have lost the runner at second base.
- 1:08:35They've lost one between home and third, but they've also scored two runs by virtue of the stolen base.
- 1:08:44Worked both ways.
- 1:08:47The foul will be into the crowd, lower deck up to left field line, still three and two on UL Washington.
- 1:09:07Three and two, two out. Here's Bar's stitch.
- 1:09:10Blind drive into shallow center field, in comes Miller, makes the catch.
- 1:09:14And that's the inning. One hit no runs, the Royals, grand done, and the score at the end of five.
- 1:09:21The Royals two, California two.
- 1:09:25Nationally supermoto.
- 1:09:32Danny Matthews at the Royals stadium. We go to the top of the sixth, a two two tie and Ralph Garley's off for the angels.
- 1:09:39And then pops a shortstop in the first single in the fourth. Two runs, five hits for the Royals, two runs, five hits for California.
- 1:09:48The pitch to the left-handed batter is a bouncing ball, short hop by LaCocchi brings it back to the bag, one away.
- 1:10:00Here's Don Baylor, who lined a home run over the wall and left in the second, and then popped to the shortstop in the fourth.
- 1:10:13The angels came up with one in the second and one in the third. The Royals scored two in the bottom of the third to tie it.
- 1:10:19And here we are in the top of the sixth.
- 1:10:22Speed and a ball. There we miss one ball and no strikes for Don Baylor. Don with 35 home runs, 136 runs batted in.
- 1:10:34The pitch to the right-handed batter, outside ball two, two and 0.
- 1:10:45Don hit 34 home runs last year, so his home run in the second inning tonight. You're passing his total of last year by one.
- 1:10:54The two-oh-pitch foul ball back in out of play. 35 is a career high.
- 1:11:14Two balls and one strike on Don Baylor. Chamberlain's pitches swung Wade and hit into the crowd, foul no play down the right field line.
- 1:11:26People talk Wade out into the corner, but no chance. Two balls, two strikes on Don Baylor.
- 1:11:37Rod Caru kneeling in the on-jerk circle. Houston leading Atlanta by the score of 4-0 after 4 in Houston.
- 1:11:48The after-ohs two and a half back of the Cincinnati Red. The two-oh-pitch to Baylor struck him out.
- 1:11:58So Chamberlain gets his fourth strikeout, and here's Rod Caru. Rod's fly to center and the second fly to left in the fourth.
- 1:12:12That is only the 48th time that Don Baylor has struck out this year.
- 1:12:21Rod Caru spins one foul into the crowd back of the California dugout in his own run. As Houston leads Atlanta 4-0 after 4 in Houston,
- 1:12:31they are just starting in San Diego. The Reds in the Padres. Red Norman for the Reds and Randy Jones for the Padres.
- 1:12:39Two small left-enders. The oh-one pitch. Rod drills one into the right field corner. That'll be extra bases.
- 1:12:46He wheels around first and into second base with a two-hour double.
- 1:12:52Rod Caru's double gives Brian Downing a chance to put the angels back on top. Downing fly to left into the second,
- 1:12:59fouled after the catcher in the fourth.
- 1:13:09The Tigers sixth, Baltimore sixth after four in Detroit.
- 1:13:15Montreal in the Mets, no score after four innings in their second game. Pirates lost in Montreal when they're first.
- 1:13:24Montreal in the Pirates in a first place tie in the National League East.
- 1:13:29Rod Caru at second two down. The pitch to Downing. Strike on the upside end.
- 1:13:40Downing up there in that wide open stance, almost directly facing the pitcher.
- 1:13:46Chamberlain's oh-one delivery. Breaking stuff misses away. One ball and one strike.
- 1:14:00Downing just looking to pull. You better just concede the inside half of the plate to him.
- 1:14:07One one pitch, way outside, two balls and a strike.
- 1:14:12If he should get a ball on the inside half of the plate in that kind of a stance, he could drill holes in that left field wall all night.
- 1:14:22But Drake has pitched him well so far, a five ball to left to follow ball to the catcher.
- 1:14:28He needs to get him here with Rod Caru at second and two out in a two-two ball game.
- 1:14:32Way upstairs, ball three, three and one. And Bobby Gritch standing in the on-deck circle watching.
- 1:14:38Craig Chamberlain, very intently. Three and one, so the count is downing play.
- 1:14:49Chamberlain gets the sign from Porter. The three-one delivery.
- 1:14:53He let up and it's blowing outside ball four and runners the first and second for Bob Gritch.
- 1:14:58Gritch struck out in the second. He's single in the fifth.
- 1:15:09For Craig Chamberlain, that would be the first base on balls that he has issued tonight.
- 1:15:17Two on, two out, a two-two game. Top of the sixth.
- 1:15:24Bobby Gritch right-handed batter. The outfield straight away.
- 1:15:31Chamberlain brings it home. Gritch takes ball outside. One ball in those strikes, they go to work out on the Royal Bullpen.
- 1:15:41Darrell Porter has to talk with Chamberlain.
- 1:15:46Right-hander, Reedy Martin and left-hander, Gary Christensen go to work out on the Royal Pen.
- 1:15:53The angels of that base runner that ever getting except the first.
- 1:16:05One ball in those strikes on Bobby Gritch. Rod Caruette second. Brian Downing, the runner at first.
- 1:16:11Here comes the 1-0 pitch. What can he miss? And it's a ball in the strike.
- 1:16:27A tenths of a moment at Royal Stadium. One and one, here's the pitch. Power ball will get out of play over the Royal dugout and into the seats. One and two now to count.
- 1:16:43So the advantage to the pitcher. Attention will continue to mount as we work our way out of the middle portion of the ball game into the late eights.
- 1:16:57And we're now in the top of the sixth. So you're getting down your final nine, ten, eleven, twelve out. Power ball back to the screen.
- 1:17:08Still one and two on Bobby Gritch.
- 1:17:16For Bobby Gritch, a veteran, he's been through the pen and pressures before. He, of course, was with Ballamore from 1971 on that he's in his third year now with the angels.
- 1:17:31One and two with two on and two out. Back ball outside and low. Two balls and two strikes. Gritch a three time off star. A four time gold glove winner.
- 1:17:49Bob did well against the Royals last year, three fifty-three. Two and two, here's Timberlintzic. He stuck him out. He took a little something off the ball. That's his fifth strike up.
- 1:18:04No runs, one hit, a walk and two men left. We go to the bottom of the sixth. The remains, Royals two, California two.
- 1:18:16Bottom of the sixth inning, a two-two tie. Willie Wilson leading off. Willie Single to drive in a run. Stola Basin scored in the third. Bounce to second in the first.
- 1:18:29Here's the line by Jim Boyer in the pitch. Popped up. Short center bailed. Everybody chasing it. Second baseman Gritch under the ball and Bob makes the play. One pitch, one out.
- 1:18:44Here's Hal McRae. Hal Single in a run in the third inning. Struck out in the first. Bar has walked one. He is struck out two. No strikeouts, though, since the first inning.
- 1:18:56Two runs, a half a dozen hits for the angels. Two runs, five hits for the Royals. Right hander against right hander. Bar to Hal McRae. It's outside. One ball, no strike.
- 1:19:12In Oakland tomorrow night, it'll be Paul Spudorf against Rick Langford. Saturday, Dennis Leonard in Matthew, Sunday, Larry Gura and Mike Morgan.
- 1:19:27The one-oh-pitch from Bar. Breaking stuff outside. Two and oh. A perfect night for a ball game. No breeze whatsoever. The temperature in the 70s. Here's the two-oh-pitch.
- 1:19:49Bungity miss. Two and one. The Royals have stranded just one runner. That came in the third inning, the inning in which they scored their two runs.
- 1:20:08The line by Bar and the pitch. Bungity miss. Jim keeping the ball away from Hal. McCrae asking to play on fire was that a strike? Bremen get answered him verbally.
- 1:20:30Two balls and two strikes on Hal McCrae. Here comes the pitch. He struck him out. Hal McCrae goes down swinging. That will bring up Brett. George, the strike-out victim, his first time up, he's rolled into a force play, ending the third inning.
- 1:20:53George with 207 hits. 21 of them home run. Bar and pitching in 196 innings has surrendered 22 homers. They sedentary two out, bottom of the sixth, the two-two tie. The lead-up is outside.
- 1:21:19Bar really hasn't tried to jam many of the Royal hitters. His patterns of both left-handers and right-handers just keep the ball away. There's a fast ball on the outside corner, one-and-one.
- 1:21:31He has thrown the fast ball inside, particularly to a few right-handed batters, but not for strikes. They've been inside. So he's making his living tonight on the outside corner.
- 1:21:45One-and-one to George Brett. Right-handed ready in deals. Fast ball misses away, two-and-one. Nick Brevig and calling the balls and strikes.
- 1:22:00You talk about pressure on the players, the manager, the umpire. They have to live with the two. Two balls and a strike on George. Here's the pitch. Over but low, three-and-one. A narrow quarter waits in the on-deck circle.
- 1:22:26Decent right field is Larry Harlow. Jim Bar is taking over his pitches. The three-one pitch. It's sharply off the glove of Rob Caru in the right field. Brett will make the turn and tries for second. Harlow through to second. He is going to be out.
- 1:22:46Anderson held the ball. That was the only question. Brett saying no, he didn't tag me. And Whitey, his side, was a lot of argue. The inning is over. Well, after waiting to see whether they call that a base hit or an error on Rob Caru, probably a base hit. He hit it very sharply.
- 1:23:02It is a single. So the Royals one hit, no runs. And after six innings, Royals two, California two.
- 1:23:17The Royals stadium. The Angels two runs, six hits and no errors. The Angels one in the second. Home run by John Baylor. One in the third. A triple by Harlow. A sacrifice fly by Jim Anderson. The Royals two in the bottom of the third. A one-out single by Frank White. A stolen base.
- 1:23:39A two-out single by Willie Wilson. Tied it. A stolen base by Willie, number 75. And a single by Hal McRae. Tied the ball game. So it's two-two. Quite a contest. To the seventh we go and here again is Brett.
- 1:23:51Alright, thank you, Denny. Denny told you the total is identical. Just watching the ball game, the Angels have seemed to have the upper hand just a little bit. They've had a couple of threats the last two innings. They've had two men on. The Craig Chamberlain fought them off.
- 1:24:05Now he'll face Larry Harlow who has tripled and hit a ball to the warning track in center. So he's hit it hard twice. Ball outside, ball one. The Angels have hit the ball hard consistently tonight.
- 1:24:20They have a home run, a triple and a double. Half their hits extra bases. Harlow fouls one out of play. One ball, one strike. A two-oh-eight hitter but as we said he's counted it pretty good twice tonight.
- 1:24:35He tripled the gap in left center. He sent others to the warning track in center. One ball, one strike. The outfield straight away. Craig Chamberlain winding the pitch.
- 1:24:49Harlow lines it in the right field base. So again the Angels have the leadoff man aboard. That's one of the reasons again why you feel they've had the upper hand.
- 1:24:57This is the fourth time in the ball game not counting Baylor's home run. They've put their leadoff man aboard. He home are leading off the second. So that's five actually.
- 1:25:06Now Jim Anderson, the number nine hitter. He's got a sacrifice fly out on the fly ball to right. The Royals will be looking for a bun here.
- 1:25:15So it's Harlow, a two-oh-five hitter who is two for three and has hit the ball hard three times tonight who is providing some trust for the Angel offense. Go to first, runner back.
- 1:25:26Now the Bun, Anderson. Buns back to the mound. Chamberlain is going to throw the second base. Not in time. The low throw. That UL Washington couldn't pick it up cleanly.
- 1:25:47Chamberlain did not hurry really getting to the ball and kind of took his time and then threw across his body. He didn't turn around to throw. Not a good play by the Royal pitcher.
- 1:26:01And the throw late to boot. Now out comes Gavilan Cisco. So now the Angels do have something going. Action in the Royal ball pit and the Angels have another threat going.
- 1:26:16Left hander Gary Christensen, right hander Rene Martin is throwing in the Royal ball pit.
- 1:26:24A sacrifice and a fielder's choice the way they score it. And runners at first and second, nobody out. Now the top of the order, Rick Miller, Carney Lansford and Ralph Gar coming up for California.
- 1:26:36And now Jim Fragosi can buzz with Rick Miller if he chooses and get runners to second and third. He will hope with nobody out. The Royal can counter that by putting a play on if they choose.
- 1:26:51So we'll see what's happening. While the conferences go on, will remind you of Pat Spears in the leg all by itself because Pat is good naturally.
- 1:27:01Now Gavilan Cisco back to the dugout.
- 1:27:11Here's Rick Miller. One for three tonight. Singled his last time up and now the Angels wanting no mistakes.
- 1:27:17Are going to get together. Third base coach Bobby Cannot calls. Rick Miller up the third base line to talk to it.
- 1:27:26And we'll see if the Royal put a play on. Brett is shortened up a third. Piva Cock at first. You all watching the shortstop is over towards third.
- 1:27:34So they may have to play on where Washington goes to third and the Royal try to get the fourth out over there.
- 1:27:40Hollow with a runner at second. That's pretty good speed.
- 1:27:46Brett down the line. Around the bunch. Remember, a bunch of the third base lines are going to go to third. They caught him.
- 1:27:53The Royal put the play on and gets a fourth at third.
- 1:27:57George Brett was charging down the line and he was looking. Rick Miller right in the eye and Miller put a ball right at him.
- 1:28:05So they get the fourth out at third to play going five, six, the shortstop UL Washington covering.
- 1:28:10And the Royal forced to third. Anderson goes to second and Miller now at first and Connie Lansford the hitter. He's over three tonight.
- 1:28:25Well, I'll tell you, George Brett was looking right down the barrel that time and he made the play.
- 1:28:30And Lansford in the stretch by Chamberlain to pitch. Ball inside ball one and the pitch a little up.
- 1:28:40Two to tie. Top of the 70. Angels with runners at first and second one out.
- 1:28:45Carney Lansford a 292 hitter. Right hander against right hander. Chamberlain ready off the stretch. The one-oh-pitch.
- 1:28:55The line in the left field, they sit. Willie Wilson plays it on the short hop. The river around third. The throw is going to be to the plate.
- 1:29:02Not in time. Runner scores. And the Angels take the lead three to two. Just the second hit in this series for Connie Lansford, but what a big one it is.
- 1:29:13He drives in his 73rd run of the year. And the Angels have taken the three to two lead. Still runners at first and second one out.
- 1:29:24And Ralph Garth the hitter. Garth won for three tonight.
- 1:29:34So Connie Lansford comes through with a big base hit for the California Angels. And the Royals not out of the woods yet here.
- 1:29:49Now out comes Whitey Herzog. Gerald Porter walked out to the mound and looked into the dugout.
- 1:30:01So out comes Whitey.
- 1:30:09And that's going to do it for Craig Chamberlain. They want the left hander Gary Christensen to pitch to Ralph Garth.
- 1:30:15And we'll see if Jim Fagosi counters that move. So the Royals going to make a pitching change. We're in the top of the seventh.
- 1:30:21The Angels have letters of first and second one out. A run home to change mate with a score. The Angels free the Royals too.
- 1:30:27While the Cincinnati Reds and the Houston Astros battle when Chicago is batting in the top of the ninth inning.
- 1:30:34Looky left hander Gary Christensen comes out of the Royal Bullpen to make his sixth appearance of the year. He was called up for Bobo after the September 1st deadline.
- 1:30:45He's worked in the third innings given 10 hits to home runs. Has no decisions, no faith.
- 1:30:52And he will face Ralph Gar here at Ralph Gar very much. A key man in the ballgame now. The Angels have taken the one run lead.
- 1:31:00And they have letters of first and second with just one out. Gar gets the hit. It's Baylor and Carew coming up.
- 1:31:06So Gar could really set up a big inning. He is the key man in the ballgame right now. He's won for Glee tonight.
- 1:31:14Glee marked ready in the ballpen. Al Rapofsky throwing now. White-handed hitters coming up. This likely the only man that Christensen will face.
- 1:31:26Glee to two Angels, top of the seventh. And the Royal's in hot water. Gar digs in Christensen at the belt of pitch.
- 1:31:39White-called breaking ball. Gar was backing off. Gar can run like the dick. He would be a tough man to double up.
- 1:31:47He is mopped up and grounded out. Here's the 0-1 pitch. Bouncing ball, high bounce of the mound. Christensen's only played a first. He's got Gar.
- 1:32:02The runners move up. And they're a second and third for Don Baylor now. That out comes Whitey Herzog. So Christensen got his man, although Gar did advance the runners.
- 1:32:10Now first base open with Baylor coming up. And Whitey Herzog wants the right-handers. So Lady Martin now. Will come out of the ballpen.
- 1:32:23Christensen got his man. He got Gar, although the high bouncer to the mound allowed the runners to advance. So now it's runners that second and third with two out.
- 1:32:41Appearance number 22 now for Rainey Martin. He's one-none loss free. He has four saves. And all he has asked to do here is to retire the man who leads the Major Leagues and runs Bet-It-In.
- 1:32:57Runners that second and third, two out. The Angels waiting three to two. And Don Baylor at the plate. Baylor at 300 hitter with 35 home runs, 136 RBI.
- 1:33:08First base is open, but forget it. Rod Carew is in the on-text circle. So you've got to go after Baylor here.
- 1:33:17Now Dan Quisenberry joins Al Robosky in the ball pit. Gary Christensen got a big out. Rainey Martin now has to do the same thing.
- 1:33:27Baylor in, Martin picks up the sign. And here comes the pitch. Lined in the center field, a base hit and that's worth two runs. And Baylor again comes through for the California Angels. They lead five to two.
- 1:33:41Don Baylor not waiting. He went right after the first pitch and he drilled it right back up the middle. So Miller scores and Lansford scores.
- 1:33:50And the Angels have scored three in the top of the seventh. They lead now five to two. Well, all year long it has been Don Baylor who has been the man for the California Angels.
- 1:34:02And here tonight with the pressure on the Angels, they needed the win. He holdered in the second and now he has driven a two run single in the seventh inning.
- 1:34:12So Baylor now is driven in 138 runs and three very, very big ones here tonight. Now Rod Caru will hit with Baylor at first and two out.
- 1:34:23And the Royals are going to be forced to come from behind. Five to California, the top of the seventh.
- 1:34:31And a while through the first on the pick off attempt up the right field line and Don Baylor now goes the second base.
- 1:34:37An error on the pitcher, Renie Martin. And that could be a very big play because now you've got Caru at the plate with Baylor in scoring position.
- 1:34:49Jim Pagosi, the Angel manager, wants to talk to the first base umpire now.
- 1:35:06Jim Pagosi wants to know if Pete McCock is trying to grab that throw with reflected Don Baylor.
- 1:35:14The first base umpire Jim Evans did not call it.
- 1:35:27And the Baylor at second, you've got first base open and Rod Caru at the plate so they won't throw with Rod Caru here.
- 1:35:38Brian Downing the on deck circle so they're going to walk Rod Caru.
- 1:35:45And it'll be runners at first and second, two out for Brian Downing.
- 1:35:52And then they'll have to pick up the time getting anything going against Jim Barr here tonight. Now they're down by three runs in the seventh.
- 1:35:59After tonight there are nine games left in the season that the Angels win it. They have a three game lead.
- 1:36:07And it'll be very, very tough for the Royals.
- 1:36:11Now out comes Whitey Herzog and he'll want Dan Quisenberry to pitch to Brian Downing.
- 1:36:15The Royals will make their third pitching change here in the inning.
- 1:36:19So Whitey Batling trying to stop the Angels here. He wants matchups that he wants.
- 1:36:28So Dan Quisenberry will become the fourth Royal pitcher here in the inning.
- 1:36:33Craig Chamberlain the starting pitcher began the inning.
- 1:36:37Glitchinson came out and got one man, Renie Martin.
- 1:36:43Gave up to single to Don Baylor.
- 1:36:45Now walks Caru intentionally after a throwing error. So right hander Dan Quisenberry now will be asked to get Brian Downing.
- 1:36:52And while we have a moment, let's pause 10 seconds for station identification. This is the Royals baseball network.
- 1:36:58This is the American Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 1:37:03Dan Quisenberry who picked up a save here last night.
- 1:37:15Now makes his 30th appearance of the year. He's won three, lost two and saved four. He's earned that average 2.57.
- 1:37:215-2 California in the top of the 7.
- 1:37:27It'll be Porter LaCocca noticed for the Royals in the bottom of the inning.
- 1:37:35And we mentioned earlier that California all year long has been a good offensive club late in the ball game.
- 1:37:41So you could sort of see it coming. They mounted threats in the fifth and the sixth, but Craig Chamberlain fought them off.
- 1:37:50Now they break through here in the seventh.
- 1:38:05Quisenberry taking his warm up talk.
- 1:38:1132,659 here at Royal City of the Night.
- 1:38:18You can close the books now on Craig Chamberlain in six and a third innings. They gave up eight hits and five runs. They were all earned.
- 1:38:31We have a moment we'll salute the Unroyal Theater. Unroyal Pirate Auto in 3503 South Nolan Road in Independence, Missouri.
- 1:38:38And DNH Tyre at 919 Troop in Kansas City, Missouri.
- 1:38:44And Quisenberry finishing his warm up talk.
- 1:38:50And now Brian Downing will be the hitter. Don Bader at second. Rod Caru at first. Two outs.
- 1:39:01So the Royals pulled out all the stops in the inning trying to stop the angels.
- 1:39:08But Connie Lansford delivered one big single and Don Bader at other. And now here's Brian Downing. He's full for two tonight. He's walked, lined out and fouled out.
- 1:39:19And he could punch a great big hole in this ball game right here. Quisenberry working off the stretch to pitch to Brian Downing on the way.
- 1:39:27Breaking ball for a strike going one.
- 1:39:34The good crowd now somewhat subdued by this angel charge in the top of the seventh.
- 1:39:45The Royals have three more shots at it. Quisenberry ready. Long looking for runners to pitch.
- 1:39:53And now it's time to count even that one one. The angels now about hit the Royals nine to six.
- 1:40:10Now the Bosque still throwing in the bullpen. Quisenberry's pitch Downing takes outside ball two, two and one.
- 1:40:19The high breaking ball missed away.
- 1:40:26What was all the pitching changes? The angels have been batting for a while here in the top of the seventh.
- 1:40:33Other games around the league they may think the angels are scoring eight or nine. They have scored three.
- 1:40:41Now the stretch to one pitch. Downing plays it's a long fly ball to deep left field. There she goes and he's broken it wide open.
- 1:40:51A great run over for Brian Downing. His twelfth of the year and it's now the angels eight to the Royals two.
- 1:41:10Boy Brian Downing just jumped all over a Dan Quisenberry pitch. He was nearly halfway up the bank in left field.
- 1:41:19And now six runs home in the inning and some of the fans immediately get up and start to head for the exit.
- 1:41:30And Brian Downing got it all. Now here's Bobby Griske the ninth man to bat in the inning. Ground ball to second that'll be the inning.
- 1:41:38He's got it. Throws the first. The inning is over but a big round for California. Six runs score in the inning.
- 1:41:47There were four hits. An error and nobody left. Brian Downing took care of that. He cleaned them up.
- 1:41:53We go to the bottom of the seventh. California eights the Royals two.
- 1:42:00Well the Royals have to climb them out. Eight to two California's we go to the bottom of the seventh.
- 1:42:07It's amazing how pattern or set early in the years that continue all year long.
- 1:42:12California early in the year. British approved to be an explosive ball club in late inning.
- 1:42:17They say that way all year. They were that here tonight. Certainly with six runs in the seventh.
- 1:42:23The Royals obviously had problems in the bullpen coming out of spring training and they really haven't been able to solve it all year long.
- 1:42:30They've had stretches where they were good last night. They came out. They were good but tonight.
- 1:42:35They're dropping the angels. So now the Royals. It's very simple.
- 1:42:40Either have a big inning or go on the road hurting nine games left in the season and they could be down by three.
- 1:42:47They'll pull the lead off. Bars six. Outside ball one.
- 1:42:54This is our twenty-fifth start. He has completed only five of his twenty-four previous starts.
- 1:43:01There's been a handful here tonight. Right called on the outside quarter one to one.
- 1:43:08Their reporter tonight is single and one.
- 1:43:16Right hander Jim Barr delivers the one one pitch. This is outside two and one.
- 1:43:23They're all ported up there taking the Royals need base runners and he wants to make bar work a little bit.
- 1:43:33Two one pitch on the way. Lined in the left field at base fifth so ported to board.
- 1:43:41Now Pima-Cocco here. Pico for two tonight.
- 1:43:49They're moving around in a California bullpen so Jim Fragosi's going to waste no time.
- 1:43:55He's going to get somebody working right now.
- 1:44:00The Royals will simply have to hit their way back into it if they can.
- 1:44:06Montreal and the Mets are all tangled up. Montreal won the first game of their double header.
- 1:44:10The Pirate's lost and now a second game at Chase Stadium. Nothing nothing after seven innings.
- 1:44:18Jim Barr to Lacan. Bouncing ball. Second looks like a double play.
- 1:44:22He should stop Scott one back to first two. Four six three.
- 1:44:27Very quickly Jim Barr comes back to get the double play so two out and nobody on.
- 1:44:31Deimos Otos who's over here tonight.
- 1:44:34Cardinals beat the Cubs two to one.
- 1:44:37Silvio Martinez the winner down at Lamp to Loser.
- 1:44:41Tombert for Baltimore in the seventh inning with nobody on. His twenty fourth Baltimore seventy.
- 1:44:52Barr ready. Here's the pitch notice. Bouncing ball to third. Fair ball back into deep side.
- 1:44:58Lansford along through safe. Otos Beatson.
- 1:45:01Now the double play looks so big. Now Cowins will hit over to tonight.
- 1:45:07And you can drop into your convenient neighborhood pop shop where twenty six fabulous flavors are still just pennies a bottle.
- 1:45:24It's still not impossible for the Royals to win if they can't pull this one out.
- 1:45:27The boy it is tough if the angels could just play five and four baseball after tonight if they win tonight.
- 1:45:34The Royals would have to go eight and one and the angels play six and the remaining nine at home.
- 1:45:39The Royals play six of them meaning nine on the road.
- 1:45:44Bars pitch to Cowins.
- 1:45:46Slow it outside.
- 1:45:56The angels have landed a haymaker with a six run seventh inning.
- 1:46:02Cowins. Ground ball up the middle. Rich backhand.
- 1:46:05Clips to the shortstop in time for the fourth bout. The inning's over.
- 1:46:08Nothing doing for the Royals. No runs to hit. They leave them that.
- 1:46:11And after seven the angels eight the Royals two.
- 1:46:14Lonnie Shelton that rookie.
- 1:46:21Seven innings by the angels eight the Royals two.
- 1:46:24And the Royals have just two more shots with a very big comeback on top of that.
- 1:46:28They have to stop California. We'll go to the eight.
- 1:46:30Eight to two. The angels in front and again here's the inning.
- 1:46:33I've read Larry Harlow will start things.
- 1:46:37Eight runs on ten hits for the angels. Two runs eight hits for the Royals.
- 1:46:41The Royals have made the only error tonight.
- 1:46:45Larry Harlow is one out of two out of three.
- 1:46:47Singled in the seventh.
- 1:46:49Crippled and scored in the third by the deep center in the fifth.
- 1:46:52The fourth center late.
- 1:46:54Larry Harlow.
- 1:46:58So Larry Harlow left handed batter up there.
- 1:47:05Here's the line by Cris and Barry in the pitch.
- 1:47:08Lined in the center field they sit.
- 1:47:10Larry Harlow three out of four tonight.
- 1:47:13And eleven angel hits.
- 1:47:17The batter Jim Hedder center.
- 1:47:19He's checking with his third base coach Bobby Canop.
- 1:47:24I feel the angels tonight feeling that they just can't have enough runs.
- 1:47:36So we'll see if Anderson is up there to bun.
- 1:47:39Layed down a bun his last time.
- 1:47:41Joe Venter under the sacrifice fly in his first trip.
- 1:47:44He's bunning. Buns follow back to the screen.
- 1:47:46She comes and the count is 0-1.
- 1:47:55The angels have at least one hit at every inning except the first.
- 1:48:03Joe Ball's in a strike on Jim Anderson.
- 1:48:10Dan Quisenberry set at the belt.
- 1:48:13The pitch to Anderson he pulls the bat back and takes it flowing outside.
- 1:48:16One ball and one strike.
- 1:48:18Rep charging from third.
- 1:48:20People cock coming down from first.
- 1:48:26Bobby Canop the third base coach going through a series of signs.
- 1:48:31And now Anderson back up to the point.
- 1:48:38Quisenberry coming set.
- 1:48:40Anderson to bun.
- 1:48:42The ball up along first and the count is now 1-2 on Jim.
- 1:48:53Come on, the angels play the Texas Rangers and Doc Medage will pitch against Frank Donata.
- 1:48:59Saturday afternoon, Chris Knapp pitches against Steve Comer.
- 1:49:04And then the angels say that Sunday Dave Frost or Don Opsley against Bernie Jenkins.
- 1:49:10They play the Texas Rangers 3 while the Royals battle in Oakland.
- 1:49:14Down low to Anderson, two balls and two strikes.
- 1:49:18Woodoff and Langford tomorrow night, Leonard and Pio on Saturday.
- 1:49:23Gura and Morgan will pitch on Sunday.
- 1:49:29Two balls, two strikes on Anderson.
- 1:49:31Larry Harlow at first with nobody out top of the eighth.
- 1:49:35He struck him out.
- 1:49:37But Jim Anderson after twice stealing the punch strikes out.
- 1:49:41And now Rick Miller of the leadoff.
- 1:49:43Man, Rick is one out of four, a fifth inning single.
- 1:50:05Here's the stretch by Dan Quisenberry, tops over to first.
- 1:50:08And Harlow diving back into the base set first.
- 1:50:11The angels took a 1-0 lead in the second and 2-0 lead in the third.
- 1:50:15The Royals promptly tied it with two in the bottom of the third.
- 1:50:20And then the angels hit the Royals with that sixth run, seven.
- 1:50:28Rick Miller takes the low and inside, one ball and no strike.
- 1:50:40If the angels hang on and win this game tonight, they will have won five out of seven.
- 1:50:45Here at Royal Stadium this year.
- 1:50:47First the Royals are 3-0 and Enheim.
- 1:50:50Bouncing ball up the middle, Frank White can't get it.
- 1:50:53Harlow makes the turn at second.
- 1:50:55Pointed third, Otis throw to breath, not in time.
- 1:50:59So Miller bounces a single to center.
- 1:51:01Riders at first and third one out.
- 1:51:06Eddie Rodriguez and Al Robowski throwing in the Royal bullpen.
- 1:51:09And here is Carney Lansford.
- 1:51:11Lansford one out of four, but that one hit has spread set up big one.
- 1:51:14A single to drive in the run in the seventh.
- 1:51:18That broke the 2-2 tie and set the table for Don Baylor and Brian Downing.
- 1:51:23Baylor a two run single and Downing a three run homer.
- 1:51:30So most people will remember Baylor single.
- 1:51:34More than that will remember Downing's three run homer.
- 1:51:37Yet Carney Lansford has the hit to put the angels ahead.
- 1:51:42Round ball followed outside third, 0-1.
- 1:51:57Another big play occurred back in the Royal fifth inning.
- 1:51:59Frank White tripled with one out.
- 1:52:03And then a squeeze play, an aborted squeeze play as the angels sniffing it out,
- 1:52:08and Frank White was dead between home and third.
- 1:52:14So that was another big play and a big game.
- 1:52:19No balls and a strike on right-handed hitting Carney Lansford.
- 1:52:23Way inside one and one.
- 1:52:29The angels, it does the hits now.
- 1:52:37Signal given, Dan Quisenberry into the stretch.
- 1:52:41With runners at first and third and one out, the 1-1 pitch to Carney Lansford.
- 1:52:45A little blooper into right field, out goes Frank White to make the catch.
- 1:52:48And the runners are made at first and third, now there are two down.
- 1:52:52The batter is Ralph Gar.
- 1:52:54Ralph in his first game with the angels, one for four.
- 1:52:57He singles back in the fourth inning.
- 1:53:06Left-handed batter, right-handed pitcher.
- 1:53:13Both men rather unorthodox.
- 1:53:17Quisenberry, a side-armed slicker baller, or a side-armed do, almost submarine,
- 1:53:23goes that slicker ball and guards just a wild free slinger.
- 1:53:33Runners at first and third, two down, eight to two angels.
- 1:53:36Ball game in the top of the eighth.
- 1:53:38Topped over to first, the runner back.
- 1:53:47The stretch and the pitch to Gar.
- 1:53:50During the breaking ball and it stayed outside, one ball and no strike.
- 1:54:02Ralph Gar, a former national leagueer.
- 1:54:06In fact, he won the National League batting championship with the Atlanta Braves.
- 1:54:09Shopping foul behind the plate, one ball and one strike.
- 1:54:18Remember, you're always a welcome sight at the sign of skilling.
- 1:54:22A ball and a strike on Ralph Gar.
- 1:54:31Quisenberry, Harlow at third, Rick Miller at first.
- 1:54:34And with two down, here is Quisenberry's 1-1 pitch to Gar.
- 1:54:38Outside, two and one.
- 1:54:46Things are very quiet at Doyle Stadium at the moment.
- 1:54:53That's what that sixth run seventh inning did.
- 1:54:57So, one and one to Gar, take to third, take to first, no throw either place.
- 1:55:02Quisenberry just trying to keep the runners on it.
- 1:55:05Gar meanwhile at the plate awaiting the 2-1 pitch.
- 1:55:10And it comes.
- 1:55:12Bouncing ball out towards Frank White at second.
- 1:55:15He's got it over to first base in time, side to side.
- 1:55:18Two hits, no run, two men left.
- 1:55:20The angels have stranded seven.
- 1:55:22Through the bottom of the eighth we go, angels eight, Royals two.
- 1:55:26Royals come to bat in the bottom of the eighth inning.
- 1:55:28And Steve Braun and Jamie Corkar, going to bat for White in Washington.
- 1:55:33Steve Braun hitting for Frank White, Frank, had a single, a triple, or unscored, and it's stolen base.
- 1:55:40Steve Braun hitting, two fifty-seven, four homers, nine RBIs.
- 1:55:45Jim Barr's pitch on the outside corner, strike call.
- 1:55:49Barr trying to win his pitch.
- 1:55:56No balls and one strike on the left-handed batter.
- 1:55:59Here's the pitch.
- 1:56:01Sharp hit, brown ball, player past third and up the left field line.
- 1:56:05And Braun is still got rendering well with that score heel designed with a single.
- 1:56:09And out there, a little run for Braun.
- 1:56:19Here comes Jamie Corkar to bat for UL Washington.
- 1:56:23It's running for Braun, number one, Jerry Carroll.
- 1:56:27And Steve Corkar, number nine, Jamie Corkar.
- 1:56:31Here's Jamie Corkar, the left-handed batter.
- 1:56:34They have played eight innings, they've changed it in New York in the second game of that double header.
- 1:56:39Montreal nothing, New York nothing.
- 1:56:41Montreal won the first game six to three.
- 1:56:44If Montreal wins, they're in first place by a half game, if they lose, they're in second place by a half game.
- 1:56:50The Pirates lost to the Phillies.
- 1:56:53Jamie Cork getting 294 with a half a dozen RBIs.
- 1:56:59The 60 James is a fast ball outside, one ball and no strength.
- 1:57:11Eight to two, California.
- 1:57:13Royal's have nine hits, the Angels a dozen.
- 1:57:17The fifth to court.
- 1:57:19Line drive, they hit right field.
- 1:57:21Carroll stops the second and the Royal's have two on, nobody out.
- 1:57:25And the top of the batting order coming up.
- 1:57:28He's out of the California bullpen, Montague and LaRose.
- 1:57:41Jamie Corkar's really done some job as a pitch hitter, especially in the last couple of months.
- 1:57:46Every time Whitey's sitting up there, he's responding.
- 1:57:53Up comes Jim Fragosi.
- 1:58:00Jim Fragosi moving towards the mound after the back to back singles by the pitch hitter.
- 1:58:06We're going to pause right here for station identification.
- 1:58:09This is the Kansas City Royals radio network.
- 1:58:13This is him.
- 1:58:15Jim Fragosi has signal towards the bullpen and he's going to make a pitching change.
- 1:58:26Right under John Montague, who appeared here two nights ago and did a fine job, is going to come in.
- 1:58:32So the pitching change is being made by the Angels here in the bottom of the inning with the score, the Angels eights, the Royals two.
- 1:58:44Back in Royal City, and the Royals kind of amount of charge here.
- 1:58:47John Montague, the new California pitcher.
- 1:58:50Montague since joining the Angels from Seattle.
- 1:58:53Has the 30-11 times for Jim Fragosi.
- 1:58:57He's won two, lost none, saved six, allowed 14 hits and 15 innings.
- 1:59:02He walked five-psycho.
- 1:59:04Over all this year, dividing Seattle and California, eight and four, seven saves.
- 1:59:12That is Willie Wilson. That is the first and second nobody out, eight to two Angels.
- 1:59:17The Royals try to establish some momentum.
- 1:59:2532,659 the Bated Tendons tonight.
- 1:59:31Willie Wilson on the left side against Montague.
- 1:59:34John Stich, foul ball off third.
- 1:59:37Rocketing into the three from the count, oh and one.
- 1:59:41Willie became only the fifth player in American League history to steal 75 or more bases in a season.
- 1:59:50He swiped second back in the third inning for his 75th.
- 1:59:54He'll win pitches, but it's foul and now the count is Montague's way, nothing in two.
- 1:59:59Al McCrae will follow and then George Brett.
- 2:00:03Dave LaRoch continues to throw in the Angels bullpets.
- 2:00:15Right hander Don Ossi is now joined Dave LaRoch.
- 2:00:19Two on, nobody out, eight to two California.
- 2:00:22Ball game in the bottom of the eighth inning.
- 2:00:25The O2 pitch to Willie.
- 2:00:27He struck him out, Montague, took something off that pitch.
- 2:00:32So Willie down swinging and here's Al McCrae.
- 2:00:35Mac is one out of three, he's single to drive in and run in the third.
- 2:00:47The Angels now looking for a double play.
- 2:00:55They have turned over two double plays tonight, one in the fourth and one in the seventh.
- 2:01:00The pitch to Al is a slider going outside, one ball in those strikes.
- 2:01:08He runs on 12 hits for the Angels, two runs, 10 hits for the Royals.
- 2:01:15Here's the Leno delivery, bouncing ball through the middle.
- 2:01:18Here comes Darrell around, third to score and Perkels stops at second and now he's a great California.
- 2:01:33That will bring up George Brett.
- 2:01:36Now along with here the Royals are back to within two runs.
- 2:01:54George tonight is one out of three, he's single his last time up in the sixth.
- 2:01:58He's also struck out and bounced into a fourth play.
- 2:02:02Eight to three, California, runners at first and second, one out.
- 2:02:07Montague straightens up, here's the pitch.
- 2:02:11Missed one outside, one ball in those strikes.
- 2:02:21The Angels trying to hang out and get a split in this series.
- 2:02:24The Royals trying for three out of four.
- 2:02:26Whoa, ball two, it's two and 0.
- 2:02:36Jamie Clark at second, Hal McCray is at first, one away.
- 2:02:49Montague's, set it to Bill, here he comes.
- 2:02:52High drive, deep center, that goes for her, way back to the wall, he's gone.
- 2:03:22George Brett, happens to run over the wall and dead center field and it is eight to six, California.
- 2:03:51Jim Porgosi has gone to the round, Brett's 22nd home run of the year.
- 2:03:58Jamie Quist scored ahead of him, started Hal McCray and suddenly the Royals are within two.
- 2:04:04Dave LaRouche, starting in from the California bullpen.
- 2:04:08So the 15th change being made here in the bottom of the eighth inning and now the score, the Angels face the Royals six.
- 2:04:15The Baltimore Colts have dropped place kicker Tony Linnhart, this after Linnhart was given a $10,000 a year raise last Sunday,
- 2:04:24even though he missed three field goals in the Colts 13-10 loss to Cleveland.
- 2:04:28The Colts signed former San Francisco and Detroit kicker Steve McMire to replace Linnhart.
- 2:04:33The 37-year-old Linnhart missed three kicks from fairly short range on Sunday and that included a 28 yarder that would have tied the Browns with one second left.
- 2:04:42After the game, Colts owner Robert Ersay visited the rejected Linnhart and gave him the $10,000 raise for making an effort.
- 2:04:49The Colts owner said that after giving the raise that he thought Linnhart would kick better for the Colts,
- 2:04:54but the Navy of Vavaspera won't get that chance to prove Ersay right.
- 2:04:58The Baltimore Orioles are close but not close enough to wrapping up the American League East title for the second straight night.
- 2:05:06The Orioles failed to reduce the magic clinching number on Wednesday Detroit Blank Baltimore 5-0 while second place Milwaukee Christ Seattle 12-1.
- 2:05:15The Orioles are nine games ahead of the Brewers and the magic number remains at three going into action on Thursday.
- 2:05:21Kansas City nudged to California 6-4 Wednesday and trails the Angels by two games in the American West going into play Wednesday
- 2:05:28and those teams are winding up their four game series with this game right here.
- 2:05:33The Montreal Expos swept a double header from the New York Mets three to one in four to one but the Pirates split
- 2:05:38and so Pittsburgh's lead over Montreal is now just one game.
- 2:05:48Back at Royal Stadium, it was so quiet just a few moments ago and now Bedlam eight to six Angels.
- 2:05:56Dave Leroche bets it left hander now pitching. Darrell Porter at the plate. Darrell a perfect night.
- 2:06:03Two singles in a lot. Leroche steals. Darrell a swing and a miss on one.
- 2:06:08For Dave Leroche, it's number 51. He's seven and ten with ten saves.
- 2:06:14The RA is rather inflated for a relief that you're 5.62.
- 2:06:20His hits to any pitch ratio is not good. 101 hits in 82 innings. 55 strikeouts, 32 walks.
- 2:06:29And the kind of Darrell Owen Lund.
- 2:06:35Darrell Porter in this series now is eight out of 14.
- 2:06:42So the Angels just simply cannot get him out.
- 2:06:46Owen Lund, Dave Leroche, brings it in. That's Wallace, going inside. Dave thought that he's gone a strike.
- 2:06:53The Dick Brunnigan set no. And they got one and one.
- 2:06:57A free run home run by George Brett over the wall and center. He's pulled the Royals to a pin two.
- 2:07:04The pinch hitter brought in Jamie Furt coming through with back to back singles. Darrell takes a strike and it's one and two.
- 2:07:12Steve Lacock will be next. The beat keeps looking into the Royal dugout to see if Whitey's going to go to a pinch hitter.
- 2:07:22One and two to Darrell. Here's Leroche's pitch.
- 2:07:27Wide to the left center base hitter. Over to Drickfiller to cut it off. Darrell's going to stay at first.
- 2:07:33Now the trying run to the plate and Watson will back for Lacock.
- 2:08:00John Lawson will back four feet Lacock. And then Amazot is coming up back of Lawson.
- 2:08:08New kidding 205 with two home runs, 26 RBI.
- 2:08:16Lawson is announced and out comes Jim Pragosi. He has Don Ossie throwing in the bullpen.
- 2:08:31And Pragosi is going to play percentage all the way. He's going to bring Don Ossie in to pitch two Lawson.
- 2:08:40So Montague struck out the first man that he faced, Willie Wilson, then allowed the single to McCray in the home run to Brett.
- 2:08:49Dave Leroche out in front of Darrell Porter gave up the single in the left center.
- 2:08:53And now it'll be Don Ossie. So the 15th change he made, the third of the inning.
- 2:08:58What's the score here is Royal Stadium. The Angel Base at Royal 6th.
- 2:09:03So the Kansas City Royals not rolling over on this one. They're hanging right in there after California jumped off to a big lead.
- 2:09:11Let's take a look and see what's happening in that National League race in the West.
- 2:09:15Cincinnati and San Diego are now in the top of the fifth inning at San Diego.
- 2:09:19And the Padres are leading that game by the score of two to one.
- 2:09:23Cincinnati leading Houston by two and a half games in the National League West going into action on Thursday.
- 2:09:29However, Houston has scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning at the Astridone.
- 2:09:35And so with Atlanta hitting in the top of the ninth inning, it's Houston seven, Atlanta one.
- 2:09:41So that's it as far as that race in the National League West is concerned.
- 2:09:47In the American League, Baltimore and Detroit in the high scoring game at Tiger Stadium.
- 2:09:53It's the top of the ninth inning now, Baltimore leading Detroit by the score of eight to six.
- 2:10:01In the National League East Montreal has scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning.
- 2:10:06And so the New York Mets are hitting in the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:10:10Montreal two in the top of the ninth. New York hitting in the bottom of the ninth, trailing two to nothing.
- 2:10:15Montreal, when the first game of that double header, six to three to move ahead of Pittsburgh by one percentage point.
- 2:10:22After Philadelphia beat the Pirates earlier in the day by the score of two to one.
- 2:10:27So a sweep by Montreal would put the X was a half a game in front of Pittsburgh in that National League East race.
- 2:10:37Back in Royal Stadium, John Ossie is now pitching for California.
- 2:10:40Nettles is going to bat for Laughlin who is announced as the hitter for Laughlin.
- 2:10:45John Ossie appears for the 35th time.
- 2:10:48The East Knight in 10 with one save, turns on average 4.84.
- 2:10:53So Nettles, the left handed batter, facing the right hander, John Ossie.
- 2:10:58A-A-S-E, John Ossie who came to the Angels from the Boston Reds Rock.
- 2:11:04Eight to six Angels.
- 2:11:08When this inning started they led eight to two.
- 2:11:11The pitch to Nettles, it's low, one ball and no strike.
- 2:11:23Darrell quartered first, what a way, here's the stretch by John Ossie and the pitch.
- 2:11:27Didn't mean to do it, a check swing foul ball up to the left.
- 2:11:31That is one and one on Jim Nettles.
- 2:11:33Amos Otis to follow.
- 2:11:37That's the tying run at the plate.
- 2:11:48The beginning for the Angels, the seven, they scored a half a dozen.
- 2:11:52Their oils at four so far here in the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:11:56That's four outside, two balls and one strike.
- 2:12:00Nettles played it over hard this year.
- 2:12:07Ball three, three and one.
- 2:12:21So the count is all Jim Nettles laid out, three balls and one strike.
- 2:12:25Ossie checking with Downing, in comes the pitch.
- 2:12:30Hopped up, short left field, out goes the third baseman, Lancer to make the catch and just in foul territory.
- 2:12:38Darrell hustles back to first and up comes Amos Otis.
- 2:12:42Amos Otis, one for three tonight and in field single in the seventh.
- 2:12:49In comes Bobby Gritch to talk to Don Ossie.
- 2:12:58Amos Otis could very well be one of the keys to the game.
- 2:13:03If Ossie is successful and can get Amos Otis, the Royal's men in the ninth would have the lower part of their batting order.
- 2:13:21Of course it was the lower part of the batting order that started this, but ten chitters.
- 2:13:27Steve Braun and Jamie Quirk.
- 2:13:30That Whitey has dipped deeply into the bench and few remain.
- 2:13:37Runner at first, ride through, not holding to Darrell, the pitch to Amos Otis.
- 2:13:41Breaking ball, base six, center field, Darrell cornered a second baseman holding.
- 2:13:46And the winning run, the potential winning run, comes to the play.
- 2:13:49The tying runs are now on the base pass.
- 2:13:52The only man who hasn't batted in this inning comes to the play, Al Collins.
- 2:14:09Al Collins coming up, Al is over three.
- 2:14:13That is the first and second two down.
- 2:14:33Two on, two out.
- 2:14:35We are in the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:14:37The lead runner to play, Don Ossie Deals.
- 2:14:40Ground ball to the second baseman grip, he's got it over the first in time.
- 2:14:45Ossie made a pretty good pitch, he had Collins side up with the pitch up and in.
- 2:14:49But the Royals come up with four, they're back in it.
- 2:14:52Four runs on six hits.
- 2:14:56But two men left, and after eight exciting innings.
- 2:14:59It's the Angels eight and the Royals six.
- 2:15:02The National Basketball Association has appealed Wednesday's ruling by a federal court judge
- 2:15:09that struck down a compensation award made last year by Commissioner Lawrence O'Brien.
- 2:15:13A district court judge called excessive the compensation.
- 2:15:16The New York Knicks were ordered to give the Seattle SuperSonics for the Knicks signing of Senator Marvin Webster.
- 2:15:22And O'Brien says even in the event an altered compensation award must be determined,
- 2:15:27he will not give the contracts of Seattle forward Lonnie Shelton and guard Vinnie Johnson to the Knicks.
- 2:15:32New York has been ordered to give Shelton $450,000 at a draft pick that turned out to be Johnson.
- 2:15:38As compensation to Seattle for that Webster signing.
- 2:15:42Meanwhile, the head of the NBA Players Association says he anticipates a legal fight over another compensation case.
- 2:15:48This one being between the San Diego Clippers and the Portland Trailblazers.
- 2:15:52Earlier this week, the Clippers were ordered to give two players a future draft pick and either guard Randy Smith or cash for another draft choice to Portland.
- 2:16:00This would be the compensation for San Diego signing of former Blazers center Bill Walton.
- 2:16:05Blazers Association Chief Larry Fleischer says the ruling in the Webster case makes it clear to him that the compensation in the Walton case is also excessive.
- 2:16:16Boston Report on the Groves says the controversial executive director of the National Hockey League Players Association has agreed to step down from this job in 1982.
- 2:16:25The report says Alan Eagleton has decided to refuse a request from the association that concentrated solely on the association matters.
- 2:16:34We go to the night inning 8-6 in favor of California.
- 2:16:44Eight runs, twelve hits and no errors for the Angels.
- 2:16:47The Royals have six runs on fourteen hits. The Royals have two more hits than the Angels.
- 2:16:52And the Royals have made the only error of the ballgame.
- 2:16:55That amazing Montreal team has come up with two runs in the top of the night inning.
- 2:17:00The Rocks are now batting in the bottom of the night trailing the Expos 2-0.
- 2:17:04Montreal won the first game 6-3 that Phillies beat the Pirates.
- 2:17:08And if Montreal wins, they're back in first in that National League East.
- 2:17:12By a half game. Don Baylor up there, Dan Quisenberry's pitch. It's a strike going on.
- 2:17:18Don Baylor, a big man for the Angels tonight. A single home run, three RBI's, these two for four.
- 2:17:28So now the Angels will try to have their lead outside one ball and one strike.
- 2:17:39Jim Meddles is now at first base for the Royals. Jamie Quirk is at shortstop. Jerry Terrell is at second base.
- 2:17:49Bouncing ball, bread at third. It's a fair ball. Sets himself. The throw to first is inside. Don Baylor is tired. What a way.
- 2:18:02That brings up Rod Caru. Rod had double in three official trips. He was walked intentionally and scored in the seventh.
- 2:18:18Rod setting himself at the plate. Brian Downing will follow.
- 2:18:27Bouncing ball through the middle. Quirk to his left can't get it if he sits for Caru.
- 2:18:33And here's Downing who hit the three run home run in the seventh inning that is now the difference in this ball game.
- 2:18:4413 Angel hits.
- 2:18:54Al Robosky goes to work on him in the Royal Bullfin. Downing in addition to his three run home run is walked, followed out and fly to left.
- 2:19:06Rod Caru at 17 stolen bases has a pretty good lead at first. The pitch to Downing is outside one ball and no strikes.
- 2:19:24The scheduled hitters in the Royal Ninth will be Terrell, Quirk and Wilson. And then back of that three, some McCray and Brett.
- 2:19:33Toss over to first. Back in time is Rod Caru.
- 2:19:41We're in the ninth, eighth, sixth, California. There's the stretch and the fifth. Miss the inside corner. Two balls and no strikes.
- 2:20:01The Angel striving to split this four game series. The Royal's badly needing three out of four.
- 2:20:10And it's coming down to the final inning. Rod Caru backs safe plays. Dan Quiszenberry fires over to Middles.
- 2:20:20Two balls and no strikes on Brian Downing. Right handed batter waiting. Quiszenberry checking on the runner.
- 2:20:30The ball to the left to high chopper Brett Sharpsing. Scoops it up on the short half and throws. He's got it all in a play.
- 2:20:38Sensational play by George Cliff. Sharpsing's home play as part of the duty had to pick up a short hop on the dead run and then throw across his body accurately and with something on it.
- 2:20:51He did all of the above to get down. On the play, Caru to second and here is Grits. Bob is one for four, a fifth inning single.
- 2:21:07So two out of the top of the ninth, eight to six Angels. Quiszenberry deals and Grits after an off-speed pitch missed, going one.
- 2:21:27The Angels you can rest assured would dearly love to have that additional run. Rod Caru at second two down, no balls and one strike on Bobby Grits.
- 2:21:41The stretch and the pitch. Lowering outside. One ball and one strike.
- 2:22:02San Diego winning in San Diego against Cincinnati and Houston is one of its games. The one one fifth to Grits is hit towards the right field corner, Al Collins towards the corner and Al up against the wall can't make the play.
- 2:22:18He trapped it against the wall and run scores and now they're saying home run. Finally they get the signal and the Royals are going to argue. Al and put up against the wall. It appears that the ball, hear them off the very top of the wall but apparently it went into the seats and then came out.
- 2:22:35Right in the corner and Whitey Herzog is going to go out and argue. They're going to rule with a home run. Dan Quiszenberry is talking to the play-dumpire. Whitey Herzog wants to ask Al Collins about it and we have a monitor here.
- 2:22:55We can check it out if the angle is good but it's not going to be the best angle. Collins coming right into the corner and then right at the 330 foot side up he goes and it appears that the ball hit off that grating at the top of the wall.
- 2:23:13Now that's inconclusive because the instant replay can sometimes deceive you a little bit and as I said the angle isn't all that good. But what has happened, the umpire has ruled the home run.
- 2:23:29I saw Collins go up and then the ball came off what appeared to be the top of the wall or the steel grating. The umpire said home run and that's what it will be for Bobby Gritch is 28th.
- 2:23:45That makes it 10-6 in favor of California. Gritch as he rounded first base was signaling home run. Whitey is really after the first base umpire Jim Heaven.
- 2:24:05Bobby Gritt as in a two run home run. The pitch was out of way for him and he went with the pitch and hit that slice and drive down the right field line.
- 2:24:19The ball just kept tearing and tearing. Collins going to the corner and Hal thought that he had to play all the way. Got right to the corner. Leaps high in the air. You could see the ball come down. So Gritch has home run.
- 2:24:37The batter will be Larry Harlow who's three out of four, a couple of singles. He tripled back in the third and scored a run.
- 2:24:55So it's a spin at home run right down into the right field corner for Bobby Gritch and the angels have a four run lead and here's Larry Harlow. Houston's BD Atlanta 7-1 forced the win. Boggs the loss. 22,000 in Houston.
- 2:25:13And Montreal did win. Two to nothing. They won a double header while the pirates lost. Some raced in the nice league heat. A strike to Harlow 0-1.
- 2:25:29Here's the 0-1 pitch. Off-speed and flung and missed 0-2. Fred you had a chance to go over and check one of the other monitors. It's still inconclusive. I didn't get to see the play but I asked. They said they froze it. They said the ball hit the top of the fence.
- 2:25:45Well it's the top of the fence that comes back. It's not a home run. If a fan hits it, it's in the seats that comes back. The 0-2 pitch is low and inside.
- 2:25:55The only question in my mind is the fact that the ball did not come off the wall as quickly as you would think it would. I thought the only question that I had looked like maybe a fan got a hand on it.
- 2:26:07But now did he reach over the railing? You couldn't see that either. A little bit inside, Quisimiery thought that was strike three. Two balls and two strikes on Larry Harlow.
- 2:26:17Sadeon clearlessly unbiased. There was a point in the replay where it did look like the ball had gotten over the rail. It was so close that it was really difficult to tell from the camera angle.
- 2:26:29The 2-2 pitch found foul over toward the Royal dugout. Say what? It's one of those where you can look at the replay and depending on which way you want it to go, you could make a case for yourself really.
- 2:26:41And you talk about the angle of the camera. As good a perch as we have at Royal Stadium. The extreme corners right at the foul pole. Very, very difficult for us to see. That's the toughest point in the ballpark.
- 2:26:54Here's the 2-2 pitch. They sit right field for Larry Harlow. So the Angels have 15 hits. Jim Henderson the shortstop coming up.
- 2:27:04Harlow's had quite a nice three singles and a triple. Jim Henderson up there. He is 0-2 in the ball game. 10-6 California top of the night.
- 2:27:30Blind shot left field. Willie Wilson will have to play it in one half. Now he falls down and the ball rolls away from him. They're going to try to score Harlow. Willie up with the ball. And he didn't see the man coming to the plate and Harlow's going to score.
- 2:27:41Well that's a shame. Willie had a shot at him because when Wilson picked up the ball, Harlow was just rounding third and Willie was rather shallow and left. But when he came up, he looked at second base.
- 2:27:53And Bobby Knapp, the coach at third, waving Harlow in all the way. Willie trying for the shoestring catch and he blocked the ball with his chest but then fell down and the ball rolled in front of him back toward the infield.
- 2:28:07Outcome flight of Herzog and that's going to be all for Dan Quarzenberry. So it is now 11-6. The Royals are making the 15th change here in the top of the night. With the score, the Angels 11. The Royals 6.
- 2:28:20National League Supervisor of Umpires, Blake Cullen, has denied charges of discrimination against members of the Major League Umpires Association.
- 2:28:28The charges were filed with the National Labor Relations Board by the Umpires Association. The association charges that its umpires were discriminated against in the areas of guaranteed salaries, advancement for minor league umpires who honored the strike, vacation time, evaluation and expense money.
- 2:28:45Attorney Phillips says the umpires who crossed the pick of lines and were retained by the National League were rewarded with three-year contracts while regular umps have never gotten better than a one-year deal.
- 2:28:55Phillips also charges that three non-union umps in the National League were given an extra week of vacation time and flown home at league expense.
- 2:29:03The Umpires Association attorney says the American League has been guilty of some of the same discriminatory practices, but Phillips adds that the pattern of conduct has not continued throughout the season.
- 2:29:16Hot Hitter won the $226,000 Little Brown Jug Pace in Delaware, Ohio, the three-year-old Edge Tiawana taxing a race off on Thursday afternoon.
- 2:29:27Irvay Theon guided Hot Hitter over the mile in a minute 55 and three-fifths seconds at the tenth straight win for the three-year-old Tater whose 1979 earnings of nearly $717,000 give him the best single season total in harness racing history.
- 2:29:46Hot Hitter won the second heat of the judge while Tiawana Taxi took the first.
- 2:29:54Caleb Aske now pitching for the Royals. Now taking his warm-up shots. Let's pause right here for station identification. This is the Kansas City Royals Radio Network.
- 2:30:04This is the American Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 2:30:15And any math years along with Fred White and producer engineer Ed Shepard at Royal Stadium, 11 to 6th California, the Angels a 6 run 7, but now 3 here in the top of the ninth.
- 2:30:25After the Royals fought back to within two runs, with four runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:30:32Runner at second base, Rick Miller the Hitter and he takes the ball, one ball and no strike. Rick has two hits tonight, he's 2 out of 5.
- 2:30:39The particulars on the Montreal double win over the Mets, second game 2-0. Scott Sanderson the winner, 9-7. Montreal got their two runs in the ninth.
- 2:30:51Two high, two balls and no strikes. Connie Landsford will be next.
- 2:30:5811 runs on 16 hits for the Angels, 6 runs on 14 hits for the Royals.
- 2:31:06Left hander against left hander, Robotsky to Miller, followed back to the screen. Rick had a pretty good cut to count 2 and 1.
- 2:31:24Robotsky has posted wins in three of his last seven outings. He has 12 strikeouts in his last 14 and 2-3.
- 2:31:35Now his pitch well this month. Here's the 2-1 delivery. Just missed inside with a fast ball, 3 and 1.
- 2:31:46And a right handed batter, Connie Landsford will be next.
- 2:31:56Now that Jim Fragoci at this very moment is hopeful of about three or four more runs. The 3-1 pitch, he walked him.
- 2:32:07But now Connie Landsford comes up, he's 1 for 5 and 7th inning single.
- 2:32:24The credit just occurred to me, not that it's taken 8-1.5 innings to come to life, but it's so true. Landsford takes side.
- 2:32:34This game illustrates perfectly the strengths and weaknesses of these two teams.
- 2:32:41It does. It's the season in microscopic form really for both of them then.
- 2:32:46Power, royal speed, both at inconsistencies.
- 2:32:552-1, 2-out. The 1-0 pitch to Landsford is up all 2-0. So I'm having trouble finding home plate.
- 2:33:04I'll bet you right now, if Al Nibosky was to stop this thing right here at the Angels, I have a 5-1 late at the bottom of the night. I'll bet you if you could talk to an Angel person, they would all say we're afraid it may not be over yet.
- 2:33:17Absolutely. After what's happened to them the last couple of months.
- 2:33:21Oh, let's say since the all-star break. How many nightmares has Jim Fragosi gone through? Recurring dreams about 7th, 8th and 9th innings since the all-star break.
- 2:33:36Here's the 2-0 pitch to Landsford. Followed back to the screen, he had a good set of the fast ball 2-1. 11-6, California in the night.
- 2:33:55Robotsky ready? Here's the 2-1 pitch. Followed ball back to the screen 2-2 now. Ralph Gar standing in the undead circle, Landsford is the 8th Angel to come to the plate.
- 2:34:13Two balls, two strikes with two out and two out. Robotsky nodding yes to Porter. And now the 2-2 pitch to Lansford. High ball three and now the Angels have the additional offense of advantage of having the runners on the move.
- 2:34:42Anderson out of second, Rick Miller the runner at first. They both move pretty well so does the hitter, Landsford. The 3-2 pitch. Very high ball four.
- 2:34:57Here's the 2-1 pitch to Robotsky. Here's Gar, the nice man to come to the plate. Ralph is one out of five, singled in the fourth. Eddie Rodriguez throwing in the bullpen.
- 2:35:13Maces loaded two out, 11-6, California. The stretch and the pitch. Inside and high, one ball no strikes, that comes Galen Cisco.
- 2:35:35Now Darryl Porter is going to join Galen Cisco on the mound. The Angels had apparently broken this game open with six in the seventh but the Royals came storming back with four in the eighth.
- 2:35:54And now the Angels have scored three and have three out here on the top of the ninth. One and oh the count on Gar. Up and in two and oh.
- 2:36:16Two balls and no strikes on Ralph Gar. Yesterday he was a member of the White Shots. Today the Angels. The 2-0 pitch. There's the strike 2-1.
- 2:36:28Don Baylor kneeling in the on-deck circle. 2-1 now leading in to Reed Darryl Porter and now the stretch. And in comes the 2-1.
- 2:36:43How a ball out of play on the third base side. That makes the count. Two balls and two strikes.
- 2:37:05Anderson a third. Miller a second. Lansford a first with two down. Two balls, two strikes on Ralph Gar.
- 2:37:16Bobbski taking too much time. Gar stepped up.
- 2:37:26Here we go. Two and two. Here's the pitch.
- 2:37:29Five ball left center field. Willie Wilson calling for it. And that ends the inning. The Angels scored three times.
- 2:37:40There were four hits. Two walks and three men left. They stranded ten. We go to the bottom of the ninth. The Angels 11. They're oil six.
- 2:37:48Scott Sanderson kept the Montreal Expos. And it expressed roaring at full speed tonight by pitching a seven hitter at the second game. This strike a 2-0 victory. They completed a double header sweep of the New York Mets.
- 2:38:01The Expos have moved a half a game ahead of Pittsburgh in the first place in the National League East. Won the opener six to three when Jerry White, a late ending replacement for Ellis Valentine, blasted a solo home run to trigger a four run eight setting.
- 2:38:15Sanderson matched eight scoreless innings with Mets rookie Mike Scott before the Expos broke through with a pair of runs in the ninth inning. Scott, who had faced a minimum of 11 batters through three and two third innings, got into trouble in the ninth inning.
- 2:38:27Well, here we go. Bottom of the ninth inning. 11 to six Angels. Clint Hurdle comes out to bat four terrels. Don Ossie's fifth. Here's a strike going one. Clint hitting two 25 with three homers and 27 RBI's.
- 2:38:40Left handed batter, the line by Don Ossie and the pitch. Kerbal lined into center field. Miller coming in. He's there to make the catch and there's one away.
- 2:38:53That brings up Jamie Quirk. Jimmy has a pitch hitter back in the eighth inning single. Jamie single. Got his average over the 300 mark. He's now a 304 hitter.
- 2:39:14Mace is empty one out. Bottom of the ninth inning. 11 to six California. Kerk takes off stride. I'll confident are the Angels while they have activity in the bullpen. One ball and no strike.
- 2:39:39The right hander throwing is marked clear.
- 2:39:49Line drive to the shortstop. Well, Jamie hit the ball hard and a lying shot right at the shortstop. Here's Willie. Willie one out of four in the ball game.
- 2:40:11The Royals down to their final out. 11 to six Angels bouncing ball to the shortstop Anderson Big Hop. On the first the ball game is over.
- 2:40:21So the Angels get what they came in to down to get. That was a split in the series. And the final score in a wild and woolly ball game here tonight. The Angels 11, the Royals six and we'll be back right after this.
- 2:40:35The California Angels with that victory now have put some space between themselves and Kansas City. It's now a three game California lead in the American League West. California has now won 83 and lost 70 while Kansas City drops to 80 and 73 and is three games out of first place.
- 2:40:56Milwaukee is not scheduled so the I should say Minnesota is not as we checked the schedule here for Thursday Minnesota losing its ball game to New York. And so let's reevaluate things here as far as things are concerned in the American League West Division.
- 2:41:16It was Minnesota beating the New York Yankees by a score of three to one. So Minnesota will remain four games behind California in the American League West Division is Milwaukee and the East was not scheduled in Baltimore playing its baseball game right now with Detroit.
- 2:41:35And that last word that ball game was in the top of the ninth with Baltimore leading by the score of eight to seven. We'll take a quick check of the tape and see if anything more has come in on that ball game. It has we do have the final score.
- 2:41:48Baltimore winning it by the score of eight to seven. So that's the final score at Detroit Baltimore eight Detroit seven. So that means that Baltimore has now won its 99 game of the season. Now these Milwaukee by nine and a half and more importantly the Orioles have reduced their magic number for quenching the American League East to two games.
- 2:42:08The 11 to six the final score here tonight a ball game that was wild and woolly the angels took a one nothing lead in the second a two nothing lead in the third the Royals got two in the third to tie it and then nothing but zeroes until the angels came up with a half a dozen in the top of the seven.
- 2:42:26And it appears that they had salted this game away but the Royals came roaring back they scored four in the eighth inning off the bench came Steve Braun and Jamie Quirk the single Hal McCrae singled in her run and then George Brett and ordered a home run over the wall and did center field.
- 2:42:42And you had the feeling at that point that the Royals had everything going their way all the momentum the crowd was in a frenzy but the angels came back and scored three in the top of the night. Don Aussie in relief of Dave LaRose you after Brett singled yielded the single to Darrell Porter and then Aussie got nettles on a pop foul to the third baseman.
- 2:43:05I would have singled the Cowan's grounded out and that was probably one of the big pitches of the night as Aussie threw a fast ball up and in Al was trying to tomahawk it in the right field to hit a ground wall to second base.
- 2:43:16And then we had the disputed Bobby Gritch home run down the right field line in the ninth inning.
- 2:43:22The aborted squeeze plays the Royals tried in the fifth which was a big play in the game and clutch hits by the California angels Don Baylor with that single to center driving in two runs the three run homer by Downing and the single by Connie Lansford that we talked about earlier that single put the angels out in front three to two.
- 2:43:40So you look back on this game for a better our zillion turning points. You can talk about this game from now until morning but one thing will change and that's the final score.
- 2:44:10.
