Latest / Mini Scroll / MINI SCROLL: Chappell Roan addresses lack of presidential endorsement, Sabrina Carpenter's Short n' Sweet tour + Marques Brownlee app backlash
Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:03culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy, and the digital space every Monday
- 0:10through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:13the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:18Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:20So I wanted to say something about the comments that I've
- 0:24been getting on and off about how I have mouth sounds when I
- 0:29host the podcast. And I'm so sorry about that
- 0:31because I am sure that is so freaking annoying.
- 0:34But it's really weird because I never had those comments in like
- 0:37the four years that I Co hosted it with Jordy.
- 0:40So over the last few months I've been trying to figure out why.
- 0:42Like I wasn't sure if it was my equipment.
- 0:44I wasn't sure if being in this new studio, it's much quieter.
- 0:48So the mics are picking up smaller sounds which I think is
- 0:51probably part of it. In our previous studio it was in
- 0:54my house we didn't even have double glazed windows so the
- 0:57audio wasn't as crisp I would say as it is now.
- 1:01But I've been deep in the forms trying to figure it out and I
- 1:03found this one comment that said it could be because you are
- 1:07speaking too directly into the microphone as opposed to
- 1:10speaking over top of it or at like a different angle.
- 1:14So I've angled my mic up instead of directly at me because I did
- 1:19realize that before I changed studios, the mic actually used
- 1:23to be secured somewhere completely different and I think
- 1:26the mics were actually angled differently.
- 1:28So I'm hoping that this will help.
- 1:30But please know I'm on a journey to solve this problem.
- 1:33I don't want that to be the reason why people can't listen
- 1:35to the podcast or don't listen to the podcast.
- 1:37So I am trying to figure it out. But if anybody has any tips,
- 1:40whether it is like personally like I am, I'm a hydrated queen,
- 1:44I don't know, maybe I'm too hydrated.
- 1:46But, you know, if you have any tips about, like, what I could
- 1:49do or what I could do for the equipment, let me know.
- 1:52All right, let's just get into the stories for today.
- 1:55So the first story that I have for you guys is that Chapel
- 1:57Rhone has addressed confusion over her comments about not
- 2:01endorsing a presidential candidate.
- 2:03OK. So earlier this week, The
- 2:05Guardian published an interview with Chapel Rhone in which
- 2:07Chapel explained why she hasn't endorsed anyone for the US
- 2:11presidential election. Coming up in the interview, she
- 2:14said, I have so many issues with our government in every way.
- 2:18There are so many things that I would want to change.
- 2:20So I don't feel pressured to endorse someone.
- 2:23There's problems on both sides. I encourage people to use your
- 2:26critical thinking skills. Use your vote, vote small, vote
- 2:30for what's going on in your city.
- 2:32And then the article goes on to say the change she wants to see
- 2:35in the US in this election year, she says instantly is quote
- 2:38trans rights. They cannot have sis people
- 2:41making decisions for trans people period.
- 2:44OK, so over the last 24 hours, the statement about her saying
- 2:48there's problems on both sides has gone so viral.
- 2:51And there's been tons of people expressing how surprised they
- 2:54were that she didn't endorse obviously Kamala Harris, not
- 2:58Donald Trump, and their disappointment that she kind of
- 3:01had this seemingly wishy washy statement.
- 3:04So now Chapel has responded in a TikTok.
- 3:07I have encouraged people to use critical thinking skills, learn
- 3:12about what they're voting for, learn about who they're voting
- 3:15for, and ask questions. And it's being completely taken
- 3:18out of context. Per usual, there is nuance to
- 3:22what I say in interviews. If you read my full interviews,
- 3:27if you literally know anything about me and for what I stand
- 3:32for, you know that this is not lip service.
- 3:35This is not virtue signalling that my actions have always
- 3:40paved the way for my project and the people who really know me.
- 3:45No, I'm not voting for Trump, and yes, I will always question
- 3:51those in power and those making decisions over other people.
- 3:55OK, so I think that this is such a clear example of like our lack
- 3:58of media literacy. I think it's so stupid that she
- 4:02needed to clarify at all who she would be voting for or like who
- 4:07she would be endorsing if she was going to publicly endorse
- 4:09someone. Obviously she's not voting for
- 4:11Trump. Literally in the next sentence
- 4:14she says the number one thing that she cares about right now
- 4:17is trans rights. And Chapel Rhone as a persona is
- 4:20a drag persona. She champions LGBTQIA plus
- 4:24causes. She donates to those causes.
- 4:27Like she is so involved. I mean, I'm not American and I
- 4:31don't live in America, so I also don't necessarily want to pass
- 4:35judgment on how people felt about her making that statement.
- 4:39I'm also going to say though, that it appears to me like
- 4:43Chapel's team is setting her up to fail.
- 4:48I think she is doing so much right now.
- 4:51She's doing so much press. There's literally a new Chapel
- 4:53Rd. interview, like I'm not kidding, every single week.
- 4:56She's performing at like every festival, every major event.
- 4:59I think she's also on tour right now and she keeps telling us
- 5:03she's not OK. Recently, she also said she
- 5:06hopes that she doesn't actually win a Grammy, which I thought
- 5:08was interesting because to me that's indicative of, yeah, the
- 5:12fact that her team is not protecting her or doing
- 5:16necessarily like what is in her best interest.
- 5:18Possibly because I don't know how many of you guys know this,
- 5:21but when it comes to award shows like that or just like even
- 5:25industry awards, things that happen in any industry, for the
- 5:29most part, you have to submit yourself to even be considered,
- 5:33let alone nominated. Low loan winning.
- 5:35So Chapel being nominated for Grammys like either she
- 5:40submitted herself, which by her statement of assuming she
- 5:43didn't, her team submitted her, her management submitted her,
- 5:46the label submitted her like someone has submitted her.
- 5:50So for her to come out and say, I hope I don't win again acting.
- 5:54I'm assuming it was not her that submitted herself.
- 5:56So acting, you know, against her best interest.
- 5:59I think it's so clear she's struggling right now and I think
- 6:02she needs to stop doing press like she needs to stop doing
- 6:05interviews because it feels like she can't handle the feedback.
- 6:09And and I am not saying that the feedback is valid feedback.
- 6:12I'm just saying in general, any interview that like a really big
- 6:15celebrity does is going to get picked apart.
- 6:18So I think she needs to stop doing press for now.
- 6:20And I think maybe she needs to at least pause on her social
- 6:25media and just use it the way that some really big A list
- 6:29celebrities do, like a Taylor Swift, where they almost
- 6:32exclusively use it for their career to promote albums.
- 6:36Like it is not a personal diary. It's an extension of their work.
- 6:41I think while being so personal on social media is obviously of
- 6:46benefit to her fans and you know it.
- 6:48It just feels natural when she's young, right?
- 6:51She's like Gen. Z and, you know, it just feels
- 6:55like the natural way also to promote your music and stuff
- 6:58like that. But I think Chapel now is at
- 7:00this level where she needs to limit her interactions with
- 7:03feedback because it seems like the team that she has around her
- 7:07hasn't put enough in place yet to protect her.
- 7:11OK, the next story that I have is I have some more pop girly
- 7:13news. I have two quick little ones,
- 7:15little updates. So the short and sweet tour,
- 7:18Sabrina Carpenter's tour started last night.
- 7:21It was so good. Oh my God.
- 7:23Like I was watching all the clips on TikTok.
- 7:25Annabelle was like, did you see it?
- 7:26And I was like, no, I haven't seen it at all.
- 7:28And then of course, as soon as she said it, I just keep seeing
- 7:31it now it's everywhere. It's so good.
- 7:33And I saw a tweet that I'm very interested to hear you guys
- 7:36feedback on. So it was like, it's so
- 7:38impressive. This is paraphrasing, but it was
- 7:39like, it's so impressive that Sabrina Carpenter has managed to
- 7:42have this like really sexy persona and sing kind of in like
- 7:47a vulgar ish way about sex while being like for the girls and not
- 7:53relying on that like male sex appeal for her career.
- 7:58And I would love to hear your opinions on how she's done that
- 8:01and why that is. I think my best running theory
- 8:05so far is #1 she's been in this game for so long, so she's had
- 8:09so many different eras and she's built that female fan base
- 8:13because she's been in the industry for so long.
- 8:15So just naturally she has was a big female fan base.
- 8:19And I think maybe too, her current era is kind of like a
- 8:23caricature of very overt femininity.
- 8:27And it like celebrates femininity more so than it
- 8:30celebrates sex, you know, like, or like being sexual.
- 8:35It more so celebrates like being fierce in your femininity.
- 8:39And it's almost like Barbie. I kind of see it like that.
- 8:42So that is my other running theory.
- 8:45And the other news that I have is that Addison Rae came out at
- 8:48the Sweat Tour with Charlie XCX and Troye Sivan and they all
- 8:52sang Diet Pepsi and it was so good.
- 8:55And I just love this for the all of them, but I love it for
- 8:58Addison and I'm so excited to see what she releases next, what
- 9:03she does next. OK, the last story that I have
- 9:05for you guys is that Marquez Brownlee is getting dragged on
- 9:09his iPhone review video for promoting his new app in the
- 9:13video at the start of the video. So we all know he is the biggest
- 9:18Marquez is the biggest YouTube review like tech channel.
- 9:22Basically he's, I would say like the most famous Envoy Internet
- 9:26probably. He posted his iPhone 16 review
- 9:30and he started by saying that he's like so excited because
- 9:33this coincides with the launch of his new app called Panels.
- 9:37He said they've been working on panels for a long time.
- 9:40It's a wallpaper app. And he said that he's like
- 9:42really known for his Wallpapers. And I didn't know this about
- 9:44him, but I guess he always has these like cool custom
- 9:47Wallpapers in a lot of his videos, whether it's like on his
- 9:50phone or on his desktop, whatever.
- 9:52And when you go to Google search, his name, that's always
- 9:54one of the top search results is like, where does he get these
- 9:56Wallpapers? So he basically created an app
- 9:59where you can get these Wallpapers.
- 10:01So it's a free app. I downloaded it, I tried it out.
- 10:04You get to pick the artist, like the vibes of the artists and it
- 10:07curates a feed for you where you can scroll through and pick
- 10:11different Wallpapers based on the artists that you like.
- 10:14And some of them are paid collections, but some of them
- 10:17are free just like if you had Canva versus like Canva Pro.
- 10:20And you can also pay for a $50 a year subscription, which
- 10:25basically means that it will be ad free.
- 10:28And I'm not sure if that includes like free collections,
- 10:32like if the paid collections you then also get for free.
- 10:35But either way you don't get ads.
- 10:37So I suppose I didn't see an ad, but I don't know, it could be
- 10:39different in Australia. I find that a lot of the tech
- 10:43that rolls out here won't have ads.
- 10:45Like even the podcast, like there was a lot of podcasts that
- 10:48I listened to for years where they would say they were going
- 10:50on an ad break, but there would be no ad that played because the
- 10:53company that they were with, like the network that they were
- 10:56with didn't have a programmatic ads team here in Australia yet.
- 11:00So I don't know if it's just going to like roll out later for
- 11:02us or whatever. But yeah, anyways, when you
- 11:04scroll through, I guess there will be ads on the feed of like
- 11:07where you can pick the wallpaper.
- 11:09So he is getting absolutely roasted for this app and for
- 11:13asking people to pay $50 a year for this like subscription.
- 11:18Again, access to the Wallpapers is free.
- 11:21You don't have to pay for this app and you can get free
- 11:24Wallpapers. Like you don't have to pay a
- 11:25subscription, you don't have to pay for the Wallpapers.
- 11:28But his comment section is crazy, so I'm going to read some
- 11:31of the top comments. Someone says it's a rare
- 11:34occurrence but MKB is actually getting cooked in his own
- 11:37comment section. Someone else says no one's
- 11:39paying $50 a year for a regular wallpaper app, Lil bro.
- 11:42Someone else says this update is so incremental that people are
- 11:45just ignoring the phone and making fun of your app.
- 11:48I think this is so interesting. I think it's indicative of how
- 11:53we feel about influencers at this current moment.
- 11:56And of course, the cost of living crisis because back in
- 12:00the day, you know, and maybe this is just because it's
- 12:03different corners of the Internet, but like back in the
- 12:05day, we used to pay $50.00 for like an eyeshadow palette
- 12:08launched by Jaclyn Hill or whatever, right?
- 12:10Like by any like, beauty guru, like $50.00 for a product that
- 12:15you can use unlimitedly is unlimitedly.
- 12:20Yeah, that sounds like a word. Sometimes they say things on the
- 12:22podcast and I'm like, did I actually go to university?
- 12:26Like, how do I not know if that's a word or not?
- 12:28Whatever. Like it's an unlimited use.
- 12:29You can use it all the time. It never expires, you know,
- 12:34like, that sounds like a fine deal.
- 12:37You know, and I get it's not a tangible product the way that,
- 12:41like, an eyeshadow palette is. You are paying $50.00 for a
- 12:44digital product. And I mean, maybe it's like, too
- 12:48similar to like, the NFT discourse.
- 12:50But, you know, I think paying $50.00 for a piece of art, like
- 12:54you're paying for an artist's work.
- 12:56And that's seems to be quite important with this app.
- 12:59He says that he's worked with all these different artists to
- 13:02create the Wallpapers. They're splitting the profits
- 13:045050 with the artists. So, you know, he's trying to do
- 13:08it quite ethically. And I just feel like in the
- 13:09realm of influencer products like this is not a scam.
- 13:13This is a very sleek app. I was using it.
- 13:16Like I said, the design is amazing.
- 13:19It works so well. The functionality is amazing.
- 13:21I have downloaded apps you guys by influencers in the past that
- 13:25like honestly barely work. But again, I understand the cost
- 13:28of living crisis and it feels like for something like a
- 13:30wallpaper where you can like genuinely get free Wallpapers
- 13:34all over the Internet. I understand people are just
- 13:38highly sensitive to literally the cost of living, like to
- 13:42anything that cost money right now.
- 13:44It's just like a slap in the face and I get it.
- 13:46But I don't see this as so different from other services.
- 13:50Maybe it's just because I'm in media so I'm familiar with them.
- 13:53But you know, there's tons of websites where you can get free
- 13:56images, like stock images and videos, But then you can also
- 13:59pay for the pro subscription and your options are significantly
- 14:03better and way more and whatever you know, or you can pay per
- 14:06image and stuff like I I see it so similar to that.
- 14:08But I understand it is also just like for your own phone where
- 14:11you can get a lot of free stuff. But I just think at the end of
- 14:14the day, if you don't like it, you just don't have to download
- 14:18it or pay for it. Anyways, guys, thank you so much
- 14:21for listening to mini scroll. Please remember to rate review
- 14:23and subscribe. I love you guys and I will talk
- 14:26to you tomorrow. Bye.
