Latest / Mini Scroll / MINI SCROLL: tbh skincare's TikTok vs. Manosphere, Drew Afualo feuds with Pearl Davis + Aspyn Ovard news
Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:03culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:06media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:10through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:13the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:17Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:19Happy Tuesday. We have another big episode
- 0:22today. I imagine it will be a long one
- 0:25again. Annabelle was saying today she
- 0:29was like, I fear that mini scroll is veering into viral
- 0:32news territory and what she meant by that.
- 0:34For anyone that has only just found the podcast, when I had my
- 0:37Co host Jordy, we would do a viral news episode which was
- 0:40similar to mini scroll but five stories from the week as opposed
- 0:44to, you know, the day. And then we would do a deep dive
- 0:46and the viral news episodes started as like, you know, 45
- 0:50minutes to an hour, five stories.
- 0:52And then as the weeks went on, they just got longer and longer
- 0:56and longer. And that is what's happening
- 0:58with mini scroll. But we're going to try and nip
- 0:59it in the bud because we still do want this to be like a time
- 1:03efficient option for you guys. OK, let's get into the first
- 1:07story. So the first story that I have
- 1:09for you guys is I wanted to talk about the TBH skin care TikTok
- 1:13video that has sparked discussion about protecting
- 1:16employees from viral content. So in case you don't know what
- 1:21I'm talking about and I honestly have no idea how you could not
- 1:23know what I'm talking about, but in case you don't, Australian
- 1:26skin care brand TBH skin care is going viral for kind of the
- 1:31wrong reasons after participating in the boots and a
- 1:34slicked back bun trend. So this trend is essentially
- 1:37like a personality reveal quote UN quote, where people, usually
- 1:42women, stand in a circle and chant certain characteristics
- 1:45about their outfit or their character boots.
- 1:47And slicked back bun boots and slicked back bun cowboy boots
- 1:52and a blowy cowboy boots and a blowy Sam's in a little red bag.
- 1:57It's a very viral trend right now.
- 1:59Like celebrities have done it. I think it was was it Amy
- 2:01Poehler did it and he was Amy Poehler recently did it.
- 2:05Like it's a big trend right now. So in their video TBH skin care
- 2:09employees chanted phrases like Gen.
- 2:11Z boss and a mini itty bitty titties and a Bob new Frank
- 2:15Greene and a sneaky link. So you know they were doing this
- 2:18in a circle chanting to each other.
- 2:19The video has been viewed over 3.8 million times and has over
- 2:24222,000 likes. So we all know that TikTok hate,
- 2:29it's very common. I am no stranger to it for sure.
- 2:33Centennial, we are on that train constantly, unfortunately.
- 2:37So, you know, lots of people were like, this is fun, this is
- 2:40flirty, this is cute, this is whatever.
- 2:42But then of course, there were lots of people that were saying
- 2:44like, this is so millennial core.
- 2:46And there was a few comments that were like, we should make
- 2:49marketing degrees more expensive or something, like just typical,
- 2:51like, troll comments. And yeah, obviously that is not
- 2:55uncommon. But things really spiraled out
- 2:58of control after the video started circulating on Twitter.
- 3:02As soon as the video was shared on the platform, thousands of
- 3:05men started hating on these women for basically simply
- 3:09existing. It even got so bad that King of
- 3:13the bad men, Andrew Tate shared the video writing.
- 3:18If you do not escape the Matrix, women like this will be your
- 3:21boss. Zog Corp loves emasculating men
- 3:24by forcing them to listen to semi sentient females.
- 3:27If that doesn't motivate you to get rich, nothing will.
- 3:30So off the bat this is horrifying.
- 3:33Like Andrew Tate reposting something with these women's
- 3:37faces in it. You know they were just
- 3:39participating in a TikTok trend that is currently going viral.
- 3:42It's such an innocent trend. It's such an innocent video.
- 3:44So Andrew Tate reposting this could have obviously never been
- 3:49taken into account. Like you could have just never
- 3:51guessed this. It is such a crazy thing that
- 3:55happened. So the brand responded to the
- 3:57hate on TikTok, making several follow-ups in these same style
- 4:01videos. In one of them they actually
- 4:04read the hate comments. And I personally I think that
- 4:06these responses are funny. I think they fit with the
- 4:09zeitgeist of the app. You know, I think there's a lot
- 4:12of criticism towards the brand right now of people saying like,
- 4:16This is why you should not put your employees on TikTok.
- 4:19And I'm going to talk about that in a second.
- 4:20Or, you know, this is like an HR issue and things like that.
- 4:24But we have no idea how they're dealing with this internally.
- 4:27You know, they've kept the video up and they could have
- 4:30collectively everybody who is in that video voted to keep it up
- 4:33because, you know, they don't want to back down against kind
- 4:36of the trolls. We have no idea if the women in
- 4:40that video have been offered counseling services or whatever
- 4:43to kind of deal with what comes with virality.
- 4:46Because at the end of the day, going viral, even for something
- 4:50as genuinely neutral as this video was, can be traumatic.
- 4:55Like, full stop, it can be. And then I can't even imagine
- 4:59what it would be like if someone like Andrew Tate reposted that
- 5:04video, how scary that would be. So yes, I believe that the
- 5:08people in this video, these women, they definitely need some
- 5:11type of support from their employer because this was posted
- 5:13on the employer's account. However, we don't know what's
- 5:16going on behind the scenes, so I'm just going to leave that
- 5:18there. However, this whole situation
- 5:20has sparked a lot of discussion and one of the notable
- 5:23discussions is about cross-platform virality and the
- 5:26specific environments fostered by different platforms.
- 5:29So despite the often siloed nature of today's viral space
- 5:32where we are all kind of entrenched in our own
- 5:35algorithms, it's easier than ever for content to achieve new
- 5:38levels of virality on TikTok. Obviously that being said,
- 5:42videos can be taken out of context and re shared across
- 5:45various platforms amplifying their reach and impact, which is
- 5:49of course not always the best. This is exactly what happened to
- 5:52TBH skin care. No one could have predicted the
- 5:56vitriol that came at this brand and these women from this one
- 6:00clip. Like I said, so many people are
- 6:02jumping on this trend. It's a very neutral trend.
- 6:05However, one thing is clearer than ever.
- 6:07The manosphere is more emboldened than ever before.
- 6:11We've discussed this in so many episodes, such as our looks
- 6:15Maxing deep Dive recently, but in Cell, language and insult
- 6:19culture are seeping into the mainstream in a way that they
- 6:21haven't in years past. And this reality is even more
- 6:27amplified on platforms like Twitter, which has become a
- 6:31haven for misogynistic, anti-Semitic racist rhetoric
- 6:35under the guise of, you know, free speech ever since Elon Musk
- 6:39took over. And I feel like it kind of
- 6:41sounds like I'm a conspiracy theorist.
- 6:44Like, I always want to be careful with how I present this
- 6:47type of information to you guys because I never want you to
- 6:49think that I'm like, falling down some rabbit hole or some
- 6:53pipeline that is just unrealistic.
- 6:55But I cannot stress enough how much more toxic and emboldened
- 7:01the manosphere is now that it's like more socially acceptable
- 7:05for men to be part of it. It's not that the manosphere,
- 7:08when I say the manosphere, this is like, you know, the male
- 7:10dominated corner of the Internet that promotes like toxic
- 7:12masculinity and incel ideology and things like that.
- 7:15It's not that that corner of the Internet has not always existed.
- 7:19It absolutely has. But in the last few years, I
- 7:22think COVID TikTok, like there's just so many different things
- 7:26that have happened that have made it so that this corner of
- 7:30the Internet is no longer fringe.
- 7:33They are no longer hiding. They are emboldened to be out
- 7:37there and loud and proud about this.
- 7:39And the problem with that is that they are then recruiting so
- 7:42many more men into this movement.
- 7:45So those are things that we need to think about as business
- 7:48owners, as founders, as managers who are in charge of teams that
- 7:53might be having their face on social media on behalf of our
- 7:56companies or the companies that we work for.
- 7:58Whatever it is, you know, that's something that you have to
- 8:00constantly consider is that the temperature of the Internet has
- 8:04changed so much. And previously posting online,
- 8:07anything online, you know, it still came with the risk of
- 8:11ending up in these forums or ending up on the wrong side of
- 8:13the Internet. I mean, just, I think it was
- 8:162016, I posted a vlog on YouTube and I'm still doing YouTube.
- 8:20Obviously this was before TikTok.
- 8:21This was before Andrew Tate was who he was before COVID, like
- 8:25before all these things kind of came together and made this
- 8:29ideology in this corner of the Internet more socially
- 8:31acceptable and mainstream. One of my YouTube videos ended
- 8:35up on an in cell forum and that was literally just like a
- 8:39regular YouTube video. Like nobody tweeted about it.
- 8:43Nobody was like, look at this girl.
- 8:45Like whatever. Like this did not, it didn't
- 8:46blow up. It was not a huge video and it
- 8:49ended up on an in cell forum. I can't stress enough how
- 8:53important it is for us to be educated on the temperature of
- 8:58the Internet and the dark corners of the Internet and what
- 9:02can really happen from this. You know, I, I know that there
- 9:05are possibly threats against these women's safety now because
- 9:09this video was tweeted out by Andrew Tate and that's just the
- 9:12consequence of going viral. And we're all so obsessed with
- 9:15virality and you know, a brand going viral, especially in E com
- 9:19brands like this, you know, this is going to help their sales so
- 9:22much. But at the end of the day, this
- 9:24is also putting their employees in harm's way.
- 9:27And I'm not specifically talking about TBH skin care because
- 9:30obviously they are like clapping back and, you know, they
- 9:33definitely seem to be like, OK with what's happened.
- 9:36But I would still question if the employees involved and even
- 9:39upper management really understands what could come of
- 9:44this video ending up on the wrong corner of the Internet.
- 9:47And then of course, the part of that conversation is like, well,
- 9:50we don't want to back down. Like, so women are just not
- 9:51supposed to post on the Internet.
- 9:53Like we don't get a cut of that then because we're too scared to
- 9:56post and go viral and end up on the wrong side of things.
- 10:00And I would say that's definitely not the answer either
- 10:03in my opinion. I think there just needs to be
- 10:05more understanding and education.
- 10:08Like we can use this case study as a lesson.
- 10:10Like that video had nothing to do with the manosphere, andro,
- 10:14Tate, toxic masculinity, women talking about literally anything
- 10:18to do with gender roles. Like things that would typically
- 10:21inflamed that side of the Internet.
- 10:23It had nothing to do with that and it still pissed people off
- 10:26enough that side of the Internet off enough that they somebody
- 10:30sent it to Andrew Tate because he's not on TikTok.
- 10:32He's been banned multiple accounts.
- 10:34So somebody sent that to Andrew Tate and he tweeted that out and
- 10:37now they are in harm's way. So this is not me saying like
- 10:41TBH, skin care and whoever designed that video is at fault
- 10:45because like, who could have guessed that this would happen?
- 10:47It had nothing to do with anything.
- 10:48It was not a controversial video at all.
- 10:51But I think this is a lesson for us who do manage teams and who
- 10:54do post our teams or ask people on our teams to post on social
- 10:58media their faces, the consequences of going viral.
- 11:02And while nothing has happened yet, I think the education piece
- 11:06needs to be there. We need to have better education
- 11:10in the workplace. I don't know if that needs to be
- 11:13within like the HR department, the social team, probably just
- 11:16across the board. Honestly, if you are a brand
- 11:20that is targeting young people and using social media to do it,
- 11:23particularly TikTok and YouTube, you need to understand the
- 11:26corners of the Internet and where your team could end up.
- 11:29And you know, with the threat like I, this sounds, I sound
- 11:32like a conspiracy theorist, but I can't stress enough like how
- 11:35real this is. These women are at risk now of
- 11:39being doxed. They're at risk of threats,
- 11:43harassment. They're at risk of their
- 11:45likeness being turned into deep fakes.
- 11:47Like they are at risk now because this went viral on the
- 11:51wrong side of the Internet. And like I said again, it is not
- 11:54any of their faults. It's not the brand's fault.
- 11:56Like who could have guessed that this would happen?
- 11:58But this is a lesson to all of us.
- 12:01That's something that I think about a lot because I do the
- 12:03Centennial World TikTok myself and I do want someone to take it
- 12:06over from me eventually. And I've been kind of looking
- 12:09like planting the seeds here and there looking over the last few
- 12:12months. But it's a very, very big
- 12:16responsibility to ask somebody to be the face of your TikTok
- 12:20account. I mean, especially for us, we
- 12:21talk about like trending topics and creator news.
- 12:24And sometimes those topics are controversial or opinionated,
- 12:27you know, so that is a little bit of a different story.
- 12:29But I think this is a lesson to all of us that, like, putting
- 12:33your team on your TikTok account when they didn't necessarily
- 12:36sign up for it or they don't fully understand what they're
- 12:39signing up for, This could end up with really bad consequences.
- 12:44I think there's not enough understanding of like the amount
- 12:48of consent that should be required by companies to get
- 12:53from their employees if they are going to post them on social
- 12:56media and it is not part of their job.
- 12:58It's something that could come back and bite us in the ass as
- 13:01employers. And just from a human
- 13:03perspective, like I can't, going viral is genuinely traumatic in
- 13:10a lot of ways, like it actually is.
- 13:12And you might not feel it in the moment, but it impacts how you
- 13:16treat the Internet, how you think about the Internet.
- 13:19I can't explain it it unless it's happened to you.
- 13:22It's a very difficult experience in a lot of ways.
- 13:25And you know, this could have real life tangible consequences
- 13:29to these women. And I'm not, like I said, this
- 13:31isn't about TBH skin care. This is just about us as
- 13:35employers putting our staff on social media in general, just
- 13:37like a lesson to all of us how far reaching the manosphere is,
- 13:42how emboldened they are. Now we're kind of living in
- 13:45hell. Like genuinely.
- 13:47And it's not fair because women should be able to post this fun,
- 13:51neutral video that is partaking in a trend.
- 13:54And that's all it should be. You know, it should just like be
- 13:57fun and cute and part of this TikTok trend.
- 14:00But unfortunately, the reality is that a lot of things that
- 14:03women are posting online are being taken and used against us
- 14:07on this side of the Internet. And we need to be aware of that.
- 14:11And that's what I'm trying to say.
- 14:12Like this should bring hopefully broader awareness to that side
- 14:16of the Internet. You guys know, I'm so passionate
- 14:18about like, talking about the manosphere, covering it,
- 14:21covering incel ideology. Like, I am in it because it is
- 14:25like my mission to make this more well known and to help stop
- 14:31this. I feel like I sound like the
- 14:32opposite, like the flip side of how they talk about women, but
- 14:37you know what I mean? Like that's it's, it's genuinely
- 14:39a real threat to us and we need to take it seriously.
- 14:42Also, who gets a cut of that? You know, if you go viral and
- 14:44you get tons of sales now because of that, and these women
- 14:47have been subjected to possible like, threats, harassment, you
- 14:52know, bullying online, Do they get a cut of those sales?
- 14:56You know, there's like, there's so many nuances involved in a
- 14:59way that like, we just didn't have to think about before
- 15:02TikTok because TikTok has changed the game for real.
- 15:07OK. Speaking of the manosphere fun,
- 15:12our next story is Drew Afwello is feuding with anti feminist
- 15:16creator Pearl David, who wishes she was part of the manosphere.
- 15:19But I don't think even they accept her.
- 15:23OK so it all started on June 29th when Pearl tweeted a clip
- 15:26of Peach PRC being interviewed on Drew A Follows podcast.
- 15:30The comment section in the clip Drew and Peach talk about how
- 15:33basically men are the worst, which is fair.
- 15:37And then a Pearl tweeted this clip.
- 15:38Like the clip of them talking and she wrote The audacity of
- 15:41fat women on a podcast to complain about men using the
- 15:45microphone men built in the building men built and more than
- 15:48likely being managed by men. If you guys don't know I'm sure
- 15:52you know we've covered Pearl before but like she is anti
- 15:55feminist. She is so vocally like pro men.
- 15:59Her whole stance is like once you're over 22 I think as a
- 16:03woman you're like damaged goods. Women have no worth unless
- 16:08they're married with children. The irony here is that Pearl is
- 16:11over 22, not married, and has no children, which I think is why
- 16:16the manosphere like the men that she is trying to appeal to.
- 16:18I think that's why they don't really take her that seriously
- 16:21because she doesn't embody anything that she preaches for
- 16:24the most part. OK so Drew responded, she wrote
- 16:27I haven't tweeted in over a year.
- 16:29Cannot think of a better time to come back for a final bow.
- 16:32LMFAO. Watch this baby.
- 16:34Maybe it'll help clarify all of my fat bitch audacity.
- 16:38And then she linked to TikTok video.
- 16:40So in this TikTok video, she showed Adm that Pearl had sent
- 16:43her two years ago asking Drew to go on a panel with herself,
- 16:47Andrew Tate and someone else. And Drew said that Pearl offered
- 16:52to fly her out to Dubai for free, pay for her accommodation,
- 16:56and like everything involved so that she would go on this panel.
- 16:58Drew didn't respond. So then Pearl's manager emailed
- 17:01Drew when she didn't get this reply and basically offered the
- 17:04same thing. So Drew's whole point was like,
- 17:06OK, you're going to sit here and call me a fat bitch and
- 17:09whatever, but you were literally begging for me to come on this
- 17:13panel. You were going to pay for it for
- 17:14me like just two years ago. OK so all of this like I said
- 17:18was like at the end of June and then yesterday Pearl randomly
- 17:22replied to Drews tweet saying that she sent that message to
- 17:261000 other women for this panel. So this ended up turning into
- 17:29this back and forth between the two.
- 17:30I won't read all of the tweets but Pearl basically just kept
- 17:33throwing jabs at Drews body. Other blue check mark losers on
- 17:37Twitter were getting involved and Drew was responding to them
- 17:40and it turned into this like snowball of like Drew kind of I
- 17:45wouldn't even say defending herself, like just like taking
- 17:47them down and the amount of body shaming in these tweets that is
- 17:51like all these people had to say to her because they actually
- 17:54don't have anything of meaning to say to her because what can
- 17:58they say? Drew is super wealthy, super
- 18:01successful, super talented, super well liked.
- 18:05She gets all these amazing opportunities.
- 18:08She's doing red carpet interviews.
- 18:10She has a Spotify exclusive podcast.
- 18:12Like she is doing the thing. Like she is truly the epitome of
- 18:17like a successful influencer. So they don't have anything of
- 18:21meaning to say to her in rebuttal.
- 18:24So I wanted to talk about the situation because even though I
- 18:27am contributing to this right now and I fully support Drew
- 18:32defending herself and giving Pearl that attention, like we
- 18:35need to stop giving Pearl the attention.
- 18:37Like, we just need to, we need to.
- 18:40I mean, she's definitely not as culturally relevant as she was
- 18:43even like a year and a half ago. I think we all kind of learned,
- 18:46you know, that if we just ignore her, she might kind of go away.
- 18:51And I think that's just like what we need to stick with.
- 18:53Because in my opinion, I actually don't think that Pearl
- 18:57really believes everything that she spews online.
- 19:00I think she does it. She takes these stances and she
- 19:03says the things she does and she aligns with who she aligns with
- 19:06because it's like the path of least resistance.
- 19:08Like she knows that this will get her views and attention,
- 19:11which converts to money. And I think that's truly the
- 19:14reason why she does it. I don't think she believes what
- 19:17she says. And I think if we just ignore
- 19:21her, then we don't give her what she wants.
- 19:24And then hopefully she will stop spewing all of this rhetoric
- 19:27because even though I think a lot of people on her side of
- 19:31things, like where she's trying to align, I think a lot of them
- 19:33don't take her seriously. I still think it's incredibly
- 19:36damaging for a woman to be saying the things she does
- 19:39publicly on such a big platform. So I think if we just ignore
- 19:42her, then hopefully she will just go away.
- 19:45OK. And the last story that I have
- 19:46for you guys is a light hearted one.
- 19:48OK? We needed some like levity.
- 19:49I mean, it's like kind of light hearted, but like it is.
- 19:52Aspen Ovard has announced that she is moving to California.
- 19:56So yesterday OG YouTube, Aspen Ovard announced that she bought
- 19:59a house in California after living in Utah, I believe her
- 20:03whole life, at least her whole adult life.
- 20:06So Aspen started posting on YouTube in 2010 and she actually
- 20:09made a very solid and like successful transition to TikTok.
- 20:12It's really not easy like a lot of the OG Youtubers.
- 20:16Did not easily move to TikTok but she has done a great job of
- 20:20that and she really creates like beauty, fashion, lifestyle
- 20:23content. Aspen made headlines in April of
- 20:25this year when it was revealed via media outlets that she had
- 20:29filed for divorce from her husband Parker, and this was
- 20:33also announced on the same day that she delivered their third
- 20:36baby. However, on May 1st, 2024, it
- 20:40was reported that they were putting their divorce on pause.
- 20:43Aspen married Parker in 2015 when she was just 19 years old,
- 20:47and their relationship was a huge part of her online
- 20:50presence. The couple also have three
- 20:52children together, and in 2023, Aspen announced that she would
- 20:55stop showing their faces for privacy reasons.
