- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome back to The Craig Way Show and the Voice
- 0:05Speaker 1: of the Longhorns Craig Way. Follow Craig on social media
- 0:09Speaker 1: at Horn Voice.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Glad to have you with us on the Monday afternoon.
- 0:16Speaker 2: So the tax line, somebody asked me, are all the
- 0:18Speaker 2: state games on Bally Sports. No they're not. They're on
- 0:21Speaker 2: FanDuel Sports Network Southwest. I'm being cheeky there. That's what
- 0:25Speaker 2: Bally is called now. It's just a change in the
- 0:27Speaker 2: sponsor name. Remember before it was Bally Sports Southwest, it
- 0:32Speaker 2: was Fox Sports Southwest. Before it was Fox Sports Southwest,
- 0:37Speaker 2: it was Prime Sports. Before it was Prime Sports, it
- 0:41Speaker 2: was HSEE Home Sports Entertainment. And I'm just told enough
- 0:46Speaker 2: to say I've called state championship games on all of
- 0:49Speaker 2: those network incarnations, all those names, but it's the same one.
- 0:52Speaker 2: It's the one where you you know, where you watch
- 0:54Speaker 2: the Spurs, where you would have seen the Mavericks through
- 0:58Speaker 2: last year, where you would have seen the Rangers through
- 1:00Speaker 2: last season, and at Alas Stars. They've all gone different
- 1:03Speaker 2: routes with their deal now. But yes, it's on the
- 1:06Speaker 2: same place that over the past few years we knew
- 1:10Speaker 2: is Ballet's Sports Southwest. It's called FanDuel Sports Network Southwest,
- 1:16Speaker 2: and so the games will be on there and they'll
- 1:20Speaker 2: start Wednesday morning at eleven a m. The first one
- 1:24Speaker 2: will be the first six man game six man one
- 1:29Speaker 2: A six man Division two. Between the one A six
- 1:35Speaker 2: man Division two matchup is Jaydon against Oakwood by an
- 1:40Speaker 2: interviewing company. Where either those are right now without looking
- 1:42Speaker 2: them up, Oakwood and what's the other one, Jaydon? Nope, Okay,
- 1:46Speaker 2: no chance, Okay. Jaydon is kind of out like going
- 1:50Speaker 2: toward Lubbock towards South Plains. Oakwood is east of forty five.
- 1:57Speaker 2: It's like you're headed over toward Crockett Palestine area in
- 2:02Speaker 2: that area. So anyway, Jaydon Oakwa. That's the first game
- 2:06Speaker 2: at eleven am. And then at two o'clock is the
- 2:10Speaker 2: one A Division one state final Gordon and White Face.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Any idea about where those communities? At what point? I
- 2:20Speaker 2: did know? Gordon is in an area that a lot
- 2:24Speaker 2: of folks would refer to as the microplex. It's out
- 2:27Speaker 2: there west of Fort Worth, east of Abilene, where not
- 2:37Speaker 2: far from Straw and little old mining communities of Mingus
- 2:42Speaker 2: and Thurber and all that sort of stuff. It's all fout.
- 2:44Speaker 2: I twenty out west of minneal Welles. That's Gordon. They're
- 2:47Speaker 2: the defending state champions and one A Division one six
- 2:50Speaker 2: man and they're playing white Face, which is up South
- 2:53Speaker 2: Plains Panhandle area up that way. So that's that's that matchup.
- 2:59Speaker 2: So Granger Interest the six man Guru, will join me
- 3:01Speaker 2: for the call of those two games. I always enjoy
- 3:04Speaker 2: what you Have you seen a six man game live
- 3:08Speaker 2: in person? No, Nope, just just watching the state tout
- 3:12Speaker 2: of games on my TV. They really are they're really
- 3:16Speaker 2: It's funny. You know, some people refer to as basketball
- 3:19Speaker 2: on grass or basketball on turf. In the case of Gordon,
- 3:22Speaker 2: you can make a case that because they're also the
- 3:24Speaker 2: defending state basketball champions in one head, so you could
- 3:28Speaker 2: do that. Uh, they have track champions too, that are
- 3:31Speaker 2: a big part of what they do. So anyway, Uh,
- 3:34Speaker 2: those started off those two games and then two A
- 3:37Speaker 2: Division two is the first eleven man games on Wednesday
- 3:41Speaker 2: night Munster and Shiner. You know where Monster in Genera?
- 3:49Speaker 2: I don't know where Monster is. I know Shiners to
- 3:53Speaker 2: the south east of US, right, yep, yep, yep, you're right.
- 3:56Speaker 2: It's in like south central Texas there. Yeah, and that's
- 4:01Speaker 2: where the Spetzel Brewery is where they may China beer
- 4:03Speaker 2: shotterback and all that. Munster is just west of Gainesville,
- 4:07Speaker 2: way up by the Red River. So at some of
- 4:12Speaker 2: the people at the at FanDuel Sports now we're taken
- 4:15Speaker 2: to calling this the beer Cheese Bowl. There's a Shiner
- 4:18Speaker 2: brewer in Munster Cheese. But let me tell you something
- 4:20Speaker 2: that they have germanfested Munster year and they have lots
- 4:22Speaker 2: of beer there too. There won't be any beer sold
- 4:26Speaker 2: at that anyway. So that's the game Wednesday night one
- 4:31Speaker 2: A Division two one A Division one Stanford and Canado,
- 4:34Speaker 2: which could be a really good one that starts off
- 4:37Speaker 2: at eleven in the morning. The afternoon three A Division
- 4:40Speaker 2: two gunter against Woodville which was a big surprise. And
- 4:44Speaker 2: then the game I'm really really looking forward to calling
- 4:47Speaker 2: on Thursday night might be the best matchup of the
- 4:49Speaker 2: entire thing is Malakoff and Columbus, number one and number
- 4:51Speaker 2: two teams in the state. And Columbus of course has
- 4:54Speaker 2: the kid Grayson Rigden, who was the six man Player
- 4:58Speaker 2: of the Year and three straight years from freshman up
- 5:02Speaker 2: through his sophomore and junior years, and then of course
- 5:07Speaker 2: moved to Columbus and he's done a tremendous job there
- 5:10Speaker 2: at Columbus and in fact, Grayson Rigdan will we talk.
- 5:13Speaker 2: You know, he'll be good. How good might he be
- 5:15Speaker 2: playing for a three to a program. He's rushed for
- 5:18Speaker 2: nineteen hundred and fifty two yards, scored thirty five touchdowns,
- 5:21Speaker 2: has caught twenty three passes for two hundred and fifty
- 5:24Speaker 2: one yards and scored three touchdowns. Adam Shovel a quarterback
- 5:28Speaker 2: though son of the head coach Matt Shobel, yep, yep.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Connected to the restaurant there down there at Showbles. So
- 5:34Speaker 2: that's a big part of it as well. So anyway,
- 5:35Speaker 2: that's part of the state championship alignment. We'll talk more
- 5:38Speaker 2: about that tomorrow. Let's go back to hearing more from
- 5:41Speaker 2: Longhorn's head coach Steve Sarkisian. And this one is a
- 5:47Speaker 2: question about Kate Clubnick and does he view Kate Clubnick
- 5:52Speaker 2: differently from other dual threat quarterbacks the way he runs
- 5:56Speaker 2: and what makes him special. Start got a pretty good
- 5:58Speaker 2: answer to this.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, first of all, he's got weapons. He
- 6:03Speaker 3: got real weapons around him. The know, the Antonio Williams kid,
- 6:05Speaker 3: the the Westcoat kid, the tight end.
- 6:08Speaker 4: I mean, they spread the ball around.
- 6:10Speaker 3: They've got a real running game with MafA, So it's
- 6:12Speaker 3: not all on Cad, you know, I think that they've
- 6:15Speaker 3: got weapons around him, they've got a really good running game.
- 6:18Speaker 3: But yet they've got scheme that allows the quarterback run
- 6:22Speaker 3: game to become a factor. You're starting to worry about
- 6:24Speaker 3: this receiver over here, this tight end over here, the
- 6:26Speaker 3: running back who's a thousand yard rusher here, and next thing,
- 6:29Speaker 3: you know, it's a quarterback direct run that that can
- 6:32Speaker 3: catch you off guard. And so you've got to really
- 6:34Speaker 3: be disciplined in this game. And you know, he and
- 6:38Speaker 3: his grit, you know, as we know, one of one
- 6:40Speaker 3: of one of Caid's you know, best strengths is his grit,
- 6:42Speaker 3: his toughness.
- 6:44Speaker 4: You know, he's a he's a tough kid. He's a
- 6:46Speaker 4: tough minded kid.
- 6:47Speaker 3: And so it's not it's one that's gonna be challenging schematically,
- 6:51Speaker 3: but also we're gonna have to play well, We're gonna
- 6:53Speaker 3: have to play physical. We're gonna have to get him
- 6:55Speaker 3: on the ground because he's not just gonna run and slide.
- 6:57Speaker 3: You're gonna have to get him on the ground.
- 6:58Speaker 4: All right.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Question one back to that whole transfer portal thing, because
- 7:03Speaker 2: Sark mentioned that a couple of the guys to you,
- 7:05Speaker 2: so they I think it was one Justice Pinkly. They're
- 7:08Speaker 2: going to stick around and be with the program, uh
- 7:13Speaker 2: throughout the course of this postseason, even though they had
- 7:17Speaker 2: entered the portal, but they're going to continue to it.
- 7:19Speaker 2: So the question for Sark was, how do you decide,
- 7:26Speaker 2: you know, who do you keep engaged with the program
- 7:28Speaker 2: once they entered the portal? In which ones do you
- 7:30Speaker 2: shake their hand and say good luck and you're done
- 7:33Speaker 2: with them? On that?
- 7:35Speaker 3: I think I think you take each case on individually,
- 7:38Speaker 3: you know, you know, I don't. I don't think there's
- 7:41Speaker 3: one blanket answer to that.
- 7:44Speaker 2: You know.
- 7:44Speaker 3: I think every player is coming in that wants to
- 7:47Speaker 3: have that discussion for varying reasons. You know, where they're
- 7:50Speaker 3: at in their career, what you know, what year are
- 7:53Speaker 3: they in their career? Do they want to play do
- 7:54Speaker 3: they not? What does the depth look like at their position?
- 7:59Speaker 3: You know, what is what has history been for them
- 8:01Speaker 3: here today and yesterday, and what's it going to look
- 8:04Speaker 3: like tomorrow and moving forward? So every guy I think
- 8:07Speaker 3: is in a little bit different space. And again, it's
- 8:10Speaker 3: not really our decision, you know, ultimately it's their decision
- 8:14Speaker 3: if but what we have to do is be honest
- 8:16Speaker 3: and be upfront and make sure that we paint a
- 8:18Speaker 3: picture of here's what it would look like moving forward
- 8:22Speaker 3: in an ideal world. If it's not ideal, here's what
- 8:25Speaker 3: it could look like, you know, from a reality standpoint.
- 8:27Speaker 3: And when we can do that, I think we always
- 8:29Speaker 3: end on really good terms with the guys, you know,
- 8:31Speaker 3: whether they decide to move on or whether they decide
- 8:34Speaker 3: to stay that. I think that we've been really transparent
- 8:36Speaker 3: and honest with them and that allows them to make
- 8:39Speaker 3: a rational decision and not an emotional one.
- 8:42Speaker 2: You get the requisite questions about Quinn. You wers want
- 8:45Speaker 2: to asking about Quinn's health and you know, given that
- 8:50Speaker 2: he's had the swar ankle and and how would he
- 8:53Speaker 2: overall characterize how Quinn's season has gone.
- 8:56Speaker 3: Well, the first thing I was encouraged by last week
- 8:59Speaker 3: was when went out to practice, he didn't have that
- 9:00Speaker 3: brace on. So I think he's continually getting better. You know,
- 9:04Speaker 3: he came out of that Georgia game, the SEC Championship game,
- 9:08Speaker 3: feeling better than he did going.
- 9:09Speaker 4: In and that that was a positive.
- 9:11Speaker 3: That was a physical game, and so him without the
- 9:14Speaker 3: brace on last week running around was really encouraging.
- 9:19Speaker 4: I think Quinn.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Kind of embodies a lot that this team has embodied,
- 9:25Speaker 3: and that's resiliency.
- 9:27Speaker 4: You know we have. I said this in Atlanta after
- 9:31Speaker 4: the game, like.
- 9:31Speaker 3: I have no pause that our guys are gonna not
- 9:34Speaker 3: respond and be ready to go Saturday for the college
- 9:37Speaker 3: football playoffs. And because they've always responded to the adversity
- 9:41Speaker 3: that we've been faced with, whether it's been in game,
- 9:43Speaker 3: out of game, facing injuries, whatever that looks like. And
- 9:47Speaker 3: they've given me little things along the way to build
- 9:50Speaker 3: confidence in me that that's what they're capable of.
- 9:53Speaker 4: And that's what Quinn has done for me.
- 9:55Speaker 3: You know, through all the stuff that he's been through
- 9:57Speaker 3: from year one to year two to year three, I
- 9:59Speaker 3: still never forget sitting with him after that after we
- 10:03Speaker 3: were at Stillwater and what that was like for him
- 10:05Speaker 3: on the road, and the way he's responded throughout his
- 10:09Speaker 3: career to injuries, UH to playing great, to having to
- 10:13Speaker 3: find his way and fight through a game, to making
- 10:16Speaker 3: a critical throw at TCU on third down. Ad Mitchell,
- 10:19Speaker 3: there's been a lot of things in there to know
- 10:21Speaker 3: this guy is going to be ready to go and
- 10:22Speaker 3: he's going to find a way to put us in
- 10:24Speaker 3: position to be successful. And like I said, you know,
- 10:28Speaker 3: we all have to improve, we all have to be
- 10:30Speaker 3: better if we want to go achieve what what what
- 10:32Speaker 3: we're trying to achieve, which is go win a national championship.
- 10:35Speaker 3: We've all got to take our game to another level.
- 10:37Speaker 3: And he's no different, right, He's got to do it.
- 10:39Speaker 3: Coaches have to do it. Everybody's got to go to
- 10:42Speaker 3: a whole nother level. And we have to do it
- 10:43Speaker 3: for four straight weeks, and we have to do it
- 10:45Speaker 3: one game at a time. And the first first layer
- 10:48Speaker 3: of that is is a really good Clemson team on
- 10:51Speaker 3: Saturday who's extremely well coached. It's got a great defensive front.
- 10:55Speaker 3: And knowing that that, you know his performance that creates
- 10:59Speaker 3: a ton of turnover and so I think he feels that.
- 11:01Speaker 3: But he's also been exposed to playing against really good
- 11:04Speaker 3: teams too, and I think he's got a lot of
- 11:05Speaker 3: confidence in himself and the guys around him.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Okay, so with Clemson's defense being as good as it
- 11:11Speaker 2: is as Sark has talked about, and if you look
- 11:14Speaker 2: at the numbers, they kind of mirror Texas in the
- 11:17Speaker 2: way that they can force turnovers create turnovers. So what
- 11:20Speaker 2: makes this Clemson defense so good at that?
- 11:22Speaker 3: Yeah, Well, I think one is their ability to get
- 11:24Speaker 3: to the quarterback. I think they average like three sacks
- 11:27Speaker 3: a game on defense. You know, they can generate pass
- 11:30Speaker 3: rush and they can create force fumbles in that.
- 11:33Speaker 4: Aspect of it.
- 11:33Speaker 3: I think two, like us, you could tell they practice
- 11:37Speaker 3: attacking the ball. You know, it's one thing to like
- 11:41Speaker 3: I think about last year where we were we wanted
- 11:44Speaker 3: to create more turnovers. Well, you have to practice creating turnovers.
- 11:47Speaker 3: You have to work at it. And you can tell
- 11:50Speaker 3: they work at it. You can see the intent in
- 11:52Speaker 3: which they go after the ball. And so our intent
- 11:55Speaker 3: has to really be of protecting that ball, and sometimes
- 11:59Speaker 3: that's the play call, right to make sure that we're
- 12:01Speaker 3: not exposing ourselves too much to a high pressure defense,
- 12:05Speaker 3: to making sure that we're making good decisions at quarterback,
- 12:08Speaker 3: to making sure that we're protecting the quarterback, to making
- 12:10Speaker 3: sure that as a ball carrier I've got two hands
- 12:13Speaker 3: in traffic, that the ball is going to be so
- 12:15Speaker 3: paramount in this game that we're not giving up any
- 12:18Speaker 3: of these short fields and that hopefully our defense can
- 12:21Speaker 3: create a couple of these guys don't turn it over much,
- 12:23Speaker 3: but we've got to try to go create some and
- 12:25Speaker 3: then take advantage of those short fields and tournament to points.
- 12:28Speaker 2: And you know, we can ever drift too far away
- 12:30Speaker 2: from trans Transfer portal comes up quite a bit during
- 12:34Speaker 2: these news conferences. It's kind of sprinkled throughout, and a
- 12:39Speaker 2: legitimate question here. Somebody asked Sark if there was anything
- 12:42Speaker 2: he could do or would do to tweak the calendar
- 12:46Speaker 2: or the transfer portal window. It is constantly evaluated. What
- 12:51Speaker 2: might that be?
- 12:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I think what you know, again, I
- 12:56Speaker 3: don't pretend to be the guy that solves all the
- 12:58Speaker 3: answers here, Okay, but I'm going to give two cents.
- 13:02Speaker 3: I think one of the challenges is we have the
- 13:04Speaker 3: NCAAA and we have the presidents of universities and they're
- 13:07Speaker 3: operating on a school calendar and what that looks like, right,
- 13:10Speaker 3: and we're trying to solve a settlement and one oh
- 13:14Speaker 3: five number and revenue sharing and all this other stuff.
- 13:16Speaker 4: And over here we have this.
- 13:18Speaker 3: College football Playoff committee, right that it went from four
- 13:20Speaker 3: teams to twelve teams, and there's talk of it.
- 13:23Speaker 4: Going even even more.
- 13:24Speaker 3: The issue comes into that college football playoff is overlapping
- 13:30Speaker 3: a fall semester into a spring semester, and so you
- 13:33Speaker 3: have this group of young men that we've allowed to
- 13:35Speaker 3: transfer that all want to be at their new school
- 13:40Speaker 3: for the start of the spring school year or spring semester.
- 13:43Speaker 3: The problem is we've got teams that are still playing
- 13:46Speaker 3: meaningful games, and not that bowl games aren't meaningful. They are,
- 13:49Speaker 3: and they're a reward for a successful season. But we're
- 13:54Speaker 3: still competing for a national championship. All the while, we've
- 13:57Speaker 3: got kids thinking about their future understandable there too.
- 14:01Speaker 4: And so whether whether we can.
- 14:05Speaker 3: Reset the calendar to some degree to fit what the
- 14:08Speaker 3: playoffs would look like, or we take a hard and
- 14:11Speaker 3: a real serious look at more of an NFL model
- 14:14Speaker 3: to where free agency doesn't begin until maybe the spring,
- 14:18Speaker 3: where players transfer to the spring. Maybe we don't have
- 14:21Speaker 3: spring ball anymore, maybe we have ota s and uh
- 14:24Speaker 3: in mini camps and and we adjust it completely. I
- 14:28Speaker 3: know that that's you know, we're at the beginning stages
- 14:30Speaker 3: of something that is brand new to us right now.
- 14:33Speaker 3: But I do think we're gonna have to take a
- 14:35Speaker 3: real look at you know, just just trying to put,
- 14:39Speaker 3: you know, a band aid over something. And that's the fix,
- 14:42Speaker 3: I think something We're gonna have to make a real
- 14:44Speaker 3: dive and a real look at college football in general
- 14:48Speaker 3: and what's in the best interests of the game in season,
- 14:51Speaker 3: for the players and at a season so that we
- 14:54Speaker 3: have a product that we're not dealing with all of
- 14:57Speaker 3: this all the time. You know, what is a salary
- 14:59Speaker 3: cap gonna look like? And how does that go about?
- 15:01Speaker 3: And you know, so much of like what we're dealing with.
- 15:05Speaker 3: Players are getting offered some crazy numbers and things going on,
- 15:08Speaker 3: but yet there's no there's no players union that then
- 15:14Speaker 3: monitors that, and what's the value at those positions. There's
- 15:17Speaker 3: so many things that we're operating kind of just however
- 15:20Speaker 3: we want right now. And I think the NFL, I
- 15:23Speaker 3: always say this, they've figured it out because they've they've
- 15:25Speaker 3: they've devoted so much time and energy to it that
- 15:28Speaker 3: I think at some point we're going to have to
- 15:30Speaker 3: look at that model of why do why is their
- 15:33Speaker 3: free agency when it is, and then how does that
- 15:36Speaker 3: coincide them with the draft?
- 15:38Speaker 4: Refer to it as signing date?
- 15:39Speaker 3: And then what they've done with their off season to
- 15:42Speaker 3: build their teams to get them ready for training camp
- 15:44Speaker 3: and then the season. And I do think springball at
- 15:47Speaker 3: some point is going to become a casualty of this.
- 15:50Speaker 3: And I'm not saying that's a bad thing, because I
- 15:52Speaker 3: do think there's something to be said for Phase one,
- 15:55Speaker 3: Phase two, phase three that the NFL utilizes in its
- 15:57Speaker 3: off season as coming out of free agency and the
- 16:01Speaker 3: draft as they build for the team. So I just
- 16:04Speaker 3: think this is gonna have to be a real overhaul
- 16:06Speaker 3: that's ultimately gonna have to take place. When and how
- 16:10Speaker 3: that comes about, I don't exactly know, But right now
- 16:13Speaker 3: we're just operating with too many things happening all at once,
- 16:19Speaker 3: and then we're gonna have all this dead time come
- 16:20Speaker 3: to the spring, and then we're gonna open free agency
- 16:23Speaker 3: up again after spring ball, and we're gonna do it
- 16:25Speaker 3: all over again. And so it just seems like it's
- 16:27Speaker 3: a little bit of a broken model, but it's the
- 16:29Speaker 3: model that we have right now, and so our job
- 16:32Speaker 3: is to try to navigate this model to the best
- 16:34Speaker 3: of our ability, and that's what we're trying to do.
- 16:36Speaker 2: All right. There's some more from Long Orange head coach
- 16:39Speaker 2: Steve Sarkis, and we'll hear more from start coming up
- 16:41Speaker 2: next hour. Up next we changed into Long Horn Basketball.
- 16:44Speaker 2: We hear from Rodney Terry to Texas Men's head coach
- 16:46Speaker 2: following the Longhorns one twenty one to fifty seven win
- 16:50Speaker 2: yesterday over Arkansas Pine Bluff. This is Sports Radio AM
- 16:54Speaker 2: thirteen hundred the Zone.
