- 0:00Speaker 1: With Stu Gotts and Hawkman.
- 0:02Speaker 2: I mean, uh, what is better than a little episode
- 0:08Speaker 2: of with Stu Gotts and Hawkmen. Huh. Not many things
- 0:12Speaker 2: look at us.
- 0:13Speaker 3: I mean, this is a fourth episode and seven or
- 0:16Speaker 3: eight days and it has a smile on my face
- 0:18Speaker 3: every time we do one man, would.
- 0:20Speaker 2: You I have some dms that I want to read.
- 0:22Speaker 2: I want to play some funny stuff we've talked because
- 0:26Speaker 2: my son set up the merch shop. I've talked a
- 0:29Speaker 2: lot about my son and we had mentioned the uh,
- 0:33Speaker 2: the story of Dan putting my kid when he was
- 0:36Speaker 2: six months or six months old in the middle of
- 0:38Speaker 2: the street on a Thanksgiving night as a as a joke.
- 0:41Speaker 2: There's more context to it. A listener to this podcast
- 0:45Speaker 2: has sent me the segment the next day's show where
- 0:50Speaker 2: we discuss it the three of us. Oh wow, I'm
- 0:54Speaker 2: going to do it in a future episode. Because I've
- 0:57Speaker 2: started listening to it. It's brought back a lot lot
- 1:00Speaker 2: of memories because there was Yeah, I mean, you were
- 1:04Speaker 2: a dad as well, so you were coming at him like, Dan,
- 1:07Speaker 2: what are you doing here?
- 1:09Speaker 1: Yes?
- 1:09Speaker 2: And you know his I'll play it for you. But
- 1:12Speaker 2: we do have the listeners to questions.
- 1:14Speaker 3: I want to ask you about it, but I don't
- 1:16Speaker 3: want you to spoil the episode we're going to.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Do on it, and listening to it like it'll bring
- 1:20Speaker 2: back a lot because if my son was six months old,
- 1:26Speaker 2: so this had to have been two thousand and four.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Two thousand and five is probably the Uh. Yeah, it
- 1:31Speaker 2: was the two thousand and four Thanksgiving two thousand and four,
- 1:34Speaker 2: so this is one of the earliest clips from the show.
- 1:38Speaker 2: But anyway, we'll do it an upcoming episode. But I
- 1:41Speaker 2: bring it up because my son. So I'm off from
- 1:43Speaker 2: my radio show on WQAM for a couple of days.
- 1:46Speaker 2: I'm not working till Wednesday. My son lives in Tampa,
- 1:51Speaker 2: now would you for your daughters? Now, I don't even
- 1:55Speaker 2: know if he wants to see me, Like he moved
- 1:58Speaker 2: last week, you know, but he had been with us
- 2:00Speaker 2: for the summer. We went to Europe whenever. But now
- 2:02Speaker 2: he's with his friends. I might be a little bit
- 2:04Speaker 2: of a helicopter dad where I like to like to
- 2:07Speaker 2: cruise round see what's going on. But there's a Whata
- 2:10Speaker 2: Burger that opened in Largo, Florida. Now I'm a big
- 2:14Speaker 2: fan of Whataburger. I think what Burger is better than
- 2:16Speaker 2: in and out Burger? Wow? Controversial take I know, Yes,
- 2:20Speaker 2: the closest Whataburger used to be Tallahassee, I believe, right,
- 2:24Speaker 2: but the regular to get one right, they're opening some
- 2:27Speaker 2: in the Tampa area. I've only been to Whatburger twice
- 2:30Speaker 2: once in Dallahassee. One's in Dallas, Okay. But they opened
- 2:34Speaker 2: one in Largo, which is like forty five minutes outside
- 2:37Speaker 2: of Tampa where he lives. For me, it's a four
- 2:41Speaker 2: hour and fifteen minute drive. Would you because I was
- 2:46Speaker 2: thinking of texting my son today when I'm done with you, Hey,
- 2:50Speaker 2: do you want to meet for like a late lunch
- 2:53Speaker 2: at what a Burger in Largo?
- 2:55Speaker 4: Right?
- 2:55Speaker 2: Would you drive four hours and fifteen minutes to see
- 2:58Speaker 2: one of your daughters that you had seen, you know,
- 3:03Speaker 2: had spent the entire summer with or whatever it was
- 3:05Speaker 2: really just a way to kill a day.
- 3:07Speaker 3: I would, Well, I would if I were staying the night,
- 3:12Speaker 3: like if we were going to do something. I'm not
- 3:14Speaker 3: going four hours and fifteen minutes, four hours and thirty
- 3:17Speaker 3: minutes driving across the state to meet up with one
- 3:20Speaker 3: of my daughters for lunch.
- 3:22Speaker 2: No, even if it's What a Burger?
- 3:24Speaker 3: Though, I understand what it is because I sur drive back.
- 3:30Speaker 2: But I think what a Burger is a bigger draw
- 3:32Speaker 2: for me than my kid. I think it's the what
- 3:34Speaker 2: a burger that's really kind of, you know, making me
- 3:38Speaker 2: think the think about this, right, I mean, take a plane.
- 3:43Speaker 2: I don't understand these people who fly. Josh Appel, you know,
- 3:47Speaker 2: my friend is a he's a broadcaster. He does he
- 3:50Speaker 2: does NFL games for Sports USA. So he had a
- 3:55Speaker 2: Buccaneers game last season. He flew from Fort Lauderdale, you know,
- 3:59Speaker 2: because it's on the company's dime. He flew from Fort
- 4:02Speaker 2: Lauderdale to Tampa. Would you do that? It's the same
- 4:06Speaker 2: four hours as far as I'm concerned. You got to
- 4:09Speaker 2: get to the airport, you got to park at the airport,
- 4:11Speaker 2: you got to sit at the gate or sit in
- 4:13Speaker 2: the lounge. Your fingers are crossed that the plane's not
- 4:17Speaker 2: going to be delayed at all. I don't know how long.
- 4:19Speaker 2: The flight is, forty five minutes or so. And then
- 4:21Speaker 2: you're on one of these shitty airplanes that you know,
- 4:24Speaker 2: they don't use the good stuff to fly from Fort
- 4:26Speaker 2: Lauderdale to Tampa. And then and then you got to
- 4:29Speaker 2: fly back, and you got to do the same shit
- 4:30Speaker 2: again where you're crossing your fingers open that it's not delayed,
- 4:33Speaker 2: Like would you ever fly to Tampa. I'm looking up
- 4:37Speaker 2: the flight times right now on.
- 4:40Speaker 3: So it's thirty it's around thirty eight minutes in the
- 4:42Speaker 3: air and somehow you have turned that thirty eight.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Minutes to a four hour or jail I mean thirty
- 4:50Speaker 2: minutes to get to the airport, for sure.
- 4:52Speaker 3: You're right nom either, like you're saying you have to
- 4:54Speaker 3: get there an hour before the flight, then you got
- 4:55Speaker 3: to get right.
- 4:56Speaker 2: I'm not bringing a bag though, so I'm just walking
- 4:58Speaker 2: right out.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Yes, first off, I am just telling you via plane,
- 5:05Speaker 3: via automobile. I am not going to Tampa just to
- 5:08Speaker 3: have lunch with one of my daughters.
- 5:09Speaker 2: I love them. I'm not traveling that far have lunch.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Like I'm not saying cracker barrel, I'm saying what a burger?
- 5:16Speaker 2: Have you been to water Burger? No? I've never been
- 5:19Speaker 2: to never been. No. All right, what are you doing
- 5:22Speaker 2: this afternoon hopping on a burg with you? Why did
- 5:32Speaker 2: I take a plane? You drive? We'll see who gets
- 5:34Speaker 2: there fast. That's a great contest. It's a great contest.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Would you would you drive. Have you had water Burger, Taylor, I.
- 5:41Speaker 5: Have not had water burger. I've had in an out Burger,
- 5:44Speaker 5: And I don't understand the hype for a burger fast
- 5:46Speaker 5: food chain overrated.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Yeah, what a burg in an out Burger is great
- 5:52Speaker 2: because the service is always great. It's like it's just
- 5:55Speaker 2: it's run like a finely tuned machine. I think their
- 5:59Speaker 2: French fries are undercooked a little bit. I always order
- 6:01Speaker 2: their fries well done. I don't buy into the whole
- 6:06Speaker 2: animal style thing. I think that gets a little cutesy.
- 6:08Speaker 2: But I think burger for burger, the actual burger is
- 6:11Speaker 2: better at what a burger.
- 6:13Speaker 5: My problem was I was going to Los Angeles and
- 6:15Speaker 5: I was asking people like what should I eat? What
- 6:17Speaker 5: should I do? And everybody was like, go to in
- 6:19Speaker 5: and out Burger. And then I get there, I'm like,
- 6:21Speaker 5: you basically just recommended me going to a fast food place,
- 6:24Speaker 5: Like there were better restaurants that people could have suggested.
- 6:27Speaker 5: Like if I was just in Los Angeles and then
- 6:29Speaker 5: I just happened to stumble upon an in and out Burger,
- 6:32Speaker 5: I might have had a better experience. But the fact
- 6:35Speaker 5: that people actually recommended going out of your way for it.
- 6:38Speaker 5: That's where I kind of drew the line.
- 6:39Speaker 3: Well, people swear they swear by In and Out Burger
- 6:42Speaker 3: in California, and I think Hawk swears by what a
- 6:45Speaker 3: Burger because he's willing to travel that way to get it.
- 6:48Speaker 2: I mean, I'm a big believer in pop I'm a foodie,
- 6:51Speaker 2: but like pop culture food. So I would never go
- 6:55Speaker 2: out West and not stop at an in and out Burger.
- 6:58Speaker 2: If I'm in Vegas or LA, absolutely going to stop
- 7:01Speaker 2: it In and Out Burger. I like all the little
- 7:03Speaker 2: cutesy places. If I go to l A, I'm gonna
- 7:05Speaker 2: go get a donut at Randy's Donuts. I'm gonna go
- 7:08Speaker 2: get a hot dog at Pink's. Like I'm gonna do
- 7:11Speaker 2: all the stuff. What a Burger is really Texas based,
- 7:15Speaker 2: but they they're starting to open a few a few
- 7:18Speaker 2: more around here. But it's just a it's a good burger.
- 7:20Speaker 1: You know.
- 7:21Speaker 2: They have spicy Ketchup. I say spicy ketchup. They have
- 7:25Speaker 2: spicy Ketchup. Wow.
- 7:27Speaker 3: I gotta tell you, I'm looking at the menu right now.
- 7:31Speaker 3: The Paddy Mount looks delightful.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Really, I mean it's just a burger joint, yes, but
- 7:36Speaker 2: they don't you know, they just don't have them out here,
- 7:37Speaker 2: so I crave it. You know, they used to not
- 7:39Speaker 2: have Culver's down here. Now users all over the place, right,
- 7:43Speaker 2: But why are you get to go out of your way?
- 7:44Speaker 3: I'm certain there's gonna be a time where you actually
- 7:46Speaker 3: go to Tampa to see your sun.
- 7:47Speaker 2: And then when you know, when in Rome you get
- 7:49Speaker 2: what a burger? You know, I'm just I'm all for
- 7:51Speaker 2: a couple of days. And so I was like, Hey,
- 7:53Speaker 2: what am I gonna do? I don't have a ton
- 7:55Speaker 2: of plans. Maybe I'll shoot up to Largo, grab a
- 7:58Speaker 2: water burger with the kid, and head I'm back.
- 8:02Speaker 3: You say shoot up to Largo, Like it's four exits
- 8:05Speaker 3: up the turnpike from Boca.
- 8:07Speaker 2: If you left now, you'd be there at three. It's
- 8:10Speaker 2: one of those It's one of those things that sounds
- 8:13Speaker 2: great in theory, and then you know it's like driving
- 8:15Speaker 2: from La to Vegas, right, you know, you're like, oh, yeah,
- 8:18Speaker 2: let's just shoot over to Vegas or whatever, and you're
- 8:20Speaker 2: like three hours in the trip, You're like, what the
- 8:22Speaker 2: fuck did we just do?
- 8:24Speaker 3: Yeah, Like they can't turn around now, right, it's one
- 8:27Speaker 3: hundred and ten degrees out and then you know, just.
- 8:30Speaker 2: A greasy burger and fries. I'm disgusted with myself afterwards,
- 8:34Speaker 2: I'm driving home, go to the bathroom. Doesn't seem to
- 8:38Speaker 2: be worth it. I think your answering your own question.
- 8:41Speaker 2: I'm texting him right now. See if you want to
- 8:43Speaker 2: me to what a burger for lunch? Early dinner? Let's
- 8:48Speaker 2: call it so anyway, here's a here's a couple of
- 8:53Speaker 2: dms that I have received on Instagram and you can
- 8:58Speaker 2: always DM me Radio Mark Hakman on Instagram. Well, this
- 9:04Speaker 2: hock genuine question. This has to do you know my
- 9:06Speaker 2: son has the merch store for me? A genuine question
- 9:09Speaker 2: that I would be interested in hearing everyone's thoughts. I
- 9:12Speaker 2: saw your shirts in the online store. We'll definitely be
- 9:14Speaker 2: getting one with the quarterback names on them. What point
- 9:18Speaker 2: we'll be able to stop putting names on the list
- 9:21Speaker 2: of quarterbacks after Marino because we'll never have another Marino?
- 9:26Speaker 2: But how good does the next quarterback need to be
- 9:29Speaker 2: before we start making the list? So I used to
- 9:32Speaker 2: have this merch store called honked Off like a Goose
- 9:36Speaker 2: dot com. The best selling T shirt I may have
- 9:39Speaker 2: said it on the show was the It's called Know
- 9:42Speaker 2: your history. And it's the list of Dolphins starting quarterbacks
- 9:47Speaker 2: since Dan Marino, right, and so now on the store,
- 9:51Speaker 2: which is Horsemuffins dot Com. DJ has updated the shirt
- 9:55Speaker 2: to add in to h and all the other starters
- 10:00Speaker 2: since Dan Marino. Here's the actual uh, the actual shirt.
- 10:07Speaker 2: I'll give you the names. These are the starters since
- 10:10Speaker 2: Dan Marino, Jay Fiedler, Damon Heward, Ray Lucas, Brian Greasy,
- 10:14Speaker 2: Aj Feely, Sage Rosenfels, Gus Faratt, Dante Culpepper, Joey Harrington,
- 10:19Speaker 2: Cleo Lemon, Trent Green, John Beck, Chad Pennington, Chad Henny Tyler, Thigpen,
- 10:24Speaker 2: Matt Moore, Ryan Tannehill, Jake Cutler, Brock Osweiler, Ryan Fitzpatrick,
- 10:29Speaker 2: Josh Rosen two, a tongue of I Loo, Jacoby Brissette,
- 10:32Speaker 2: Teddy Bridgewater, Skyler Thompson, quinn Ewers, and now Malik Willis.
- 10:37Speaker 2: And by the way, before you text me and say
- 10:39Speaker 2: where's Pat White, he never started a game? These are
- 10:41Speaker 2: only starters. No, he just remember? Yes, So does that
- 10:47Speaker 2: countdown stop? When? What? Because Marino didn't win a Super Bowl?
- 10:51Speaker 2: But is the line still here? Hey, someone's gotta win
- 10:55Speaker 2: a Super Bowl before we start saying, here are all
- 10:58Speaker 2: the quarterbacks since Marino, and you just heard why the
- 11:03Speaker 2: Dolphins have been so bad for so long. By the way,
- 11:05Speaker 2: remarkable when you hear that list, it's remarkable.
- 11:10Speaker 3: So I don't know, Well, yes, winning a Super Bowl,
- 11:12Speaker 3: any quarterback that wins the Super Bowl for the Dolphins,
- 11:16Speaker 3: we can we can stop with the Marino jerseys. I mean, listen,
- 11:20Speaker 3: Marino is always going to be a thing down here,
- 11:22Speaker 3: but it's gonna have to take someone who either wins
- 11:25Speaker 3: the Super Bowl or somehow has the ability and the
- 11:28Speaker 3: talents of a Dan Marino. Doesn't need to win it,
- 11:32Speaker 3: but just as perceived to be as good as Dan
- 11:34Speaker 3: Marino was for the Dolphins.
- 11:36Speaker 2: I don't know Willis? What's that? Will it be Malik Willis?
- 11:40Speaker 2: I don't think so, do you? No? No, no, you
- 11:46Speaker 2: could add him to the list already, by the way,
- 11:48Speaker 2: And then there was a there was a d M
- 11:52Speaker 2: Is there a moment in either of your careers where
- 11:55Speaker 2: you were Stu got said, oh fuck, this isn't for me,
- 11:58Speaker 2: and how did you get out of that moment? And
- 12:00Speaker 2: then the guy writes in parentheses besides Dan screaming at
- 12:03Speaker 2: you Hawk for letting that guy be on the radio,
- 12:06Speaker 2: not him. He's talking about Randy Fund, which we had
- 12:08Speaker 2: talked about in a previous episode. But that's what I
- 12:12Speaker 2: think we both agree with. Dan. Did you ever think though,
- 12:16Speaker 2: that this isn't for that? Radio isn't for me? Like
- 12:20Speaker 2: there are times during my tenure, my eight years nine
- 12:23Speaker 2: years with you and Dan, where I thought this kind
- 12:26Speaker 2: of work environment isn't for me, right, Like, is there
- 12:30Speaker 2: a moment where you ever said, like, Hey, I don't
- 12:32Speaker 2: think radio is for me.
- 12:34Speaker 3: I would say maybe I never thought to myself, is
- 12:38Speaker 3: radio for me? Radio is something sports radio in particular,
- 12:41Speaker 3: something I always wanted to do. I remember in the
- 12:44Speaker 3: infancy stage of the show that we put together with
- 12:47Speaker 3: Dan that there were times in that first year I
- 12:51Speaker 3: was thinking, is this show for me?
- 12:54Speaker 2: Well? I fit into this show?
- 12:55Speaker 3: Will I fit into what it is that Dan and
- 12:58Speaker 3: then ultimately Hawk wanted to do with the show, because
- 13:01Speaker 3: you know me, I wanted to get in here.
- 13:02Speaker 2: I wanted to do WFAN, I wanted to do Mike
- 13:05Speaker 2: and the Man. I want to do that type of
- 13:06Speaker 2: sports radio. You're running the station, and a lot of
- 13:09Speaker 2: the stuff that Dan was doing on the air was
- 13:12Speaker 2: kind of the antithesis of what a general manager would want.
- 13:15Speaker 3: Yeah, and so there were times where I actually did
- 13:17Speaker 3: think to myself, Man, I don't want to be the
- 13:18Speaker 3: guy that gets in.
- 13:19Speaker 2: The way of what it is he's trying to do.
- 13:23Speaker 3: And then the character slowly developed, and you guys did
- 13:26Speaker 3: a great job, we all did, of molding it and
- 13:28Speaker 3: making it work for the show. But certainly there were
- 13:31Speaker 3: moments in that first year where I was thinking, is
- 13:33Speaker 3: this show for me? I never thought, man, sports radio
- 13:35Speaker 3: is not for me. This is what I always wanted
- 13:37Speaker 3: to do. And I've viewed even while I was having
- 13:39Speaker 3: those thoughts doing the show with Dan, I was still
- 13:42Speaker 3: in a place I wanted to be.
- 13:43Speaker 2: I was doing afternoon drive in a major market. You know.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Did you ever have a conversation with Dan though of, hey,
- 13:49Speaker 2: might it be better if we bring in so and
- 13:52Speaker 2: so to pair with you and I'll just do a
- 13:54Speaker 2: show on my own.
- 13:55Speaker 3: I'm certain we'd had conversations like that in the first
- 13:58Speaker 3: I don't know, six months or so, I am certain
- 14:03Speaker 3: we had conversations like that. To Dan's credit, whenever if
- 14:07Speaker 3: that ever came up, or when it came up, he
- 14:11Speaker 3: would always say, we're gonna make it work, like you
- 14:12Speaker 3: know Dan, Like finding someone for Dan was very difficult.
- 14:15Speaker 3: The guy he wanted was Boom. Boog wasn't available because
- 14:18Speaker 3: he knew Boog and I don't think you know Boog
- 14:20Speaker 3: will tell me. I don't know how good that show
- 14:22Speaker 3: would have been the two of us, because.
- 14:26Speaker 2: I probably brought.
- 14:27Speaker 3: It up to Dan at some point, and I think Dan,
- 14:31Speaker 3: to his credit, was like, no, we're going to make
- 14:32Speaker 3: something of this.
- 14:33Speaker 2: You know, somebody dms me. I just listened to the
- 14:37Speaker 2: two thousand and seven Suey episode. I really started listening
- 14:41Speaker 2: to the show in twenty nineteen. Wish I could have
- 14:43Speaker 2: found it in those prime Sue years, but sadly I
- 14:47Speaker 2: was a seven year old in Nebraska. But I am
- 14:50Speaker 2: absolutely loving what you and Stu Gotts are doing with
- 14:52Speaker 2: the podcast. Oh we appreciate it, Thank you, Thank you.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Kellen was the was the guy there, so hawk.
- 15:00Speaker 3: If I could hone in on something you didn't you
- 15:01Speaker 3: were there were times where you thought about the environment
- 15:03Speaker 3: that we had created and maybe it's not for you.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Well, even the Suie Awards. You know, I had a
- 15:10Speaker 2: lot of baggage with Dan that you didn't. Dan and
- 15:12Speaker 2: I were friends first, right, so we were best of
- 15:16Speaker 2: friends in college. He stood in my wedding like I
- 15:20Speaker 2: as evidence, I spent Thanksgiving, you know, in two thousand
- 15:23Speaker 2: and four with my new family at his house. I
- 15:26Speaker 2: mean we were really inseparable. So I had a lot
- 15:31Speaker 2: of different baggage with Dan than you did. And the job,
- 15:36Speaker 2: like even the Suys that we've been playing lately, that
- 15:39Speaker 2: required a ton of my time. We did not have
- 15:41Speaker 2: a staff. It was me. I was the staff, right
- 15:45Speaker 2: and so I would go home, you know, in the morning.
- 15:50Speaker 2: I would be responsible for booking the guests, and Dan
- 15:53Speaker 2: was very particular about who he wanted on as a guest.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Right.
- 15:57Speaker 2: It was at the beginning, I could book Michelle Tafoya
- 16:01Speaker 2: if it was Monday night football, and I could book
- 16:06Speaker 2: you know, a writer Dave Barry from the Miami Herald.
- 16:11Speaker 2: But as the show got you know, further and further,
- 16:14Speaker 2: like that wasn't acceptable. Like he wanted the biggest of
- 16:17Speaker 2: their nicknames, which I understood, but so my mornings were
- 16:21Speaker 2: spent doing that. We didn't have a guest booker. We
- 16:24Speaker 2: didn't have Alison, we didn't have Billy, we didn't have
- 16:26Speaker 2: Chris Cody, we didn't have Roy at this time. It
- 16:29Speaker 2: literally was you and Dan are the hosts.
- 16:32Speaker 1: Yep.
- 16:32Speaker 2: I was the executive producer, and then I had Andy
- 16:35Speaker 2: King helping me out as best he could. But I didn't,
- 16:40Speaker 2: you know, I didn't delegate a ton of stuff to him.
- 16:42Speaker 2: So I'd spend my mornings getting ready for the show.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Then i'd get into the radio station and i'd get there,
- 16:48Speaker 2: you know, show started at three. I'd probably get there
- 16:50Speaker 2: about one o'clock one point thirty, start doing some for
- 16:53Speaker 2: some production for the show. He loved the production. I
- 16:56Speaker 2: made all the big opens, I made all the rejoins.
- 16:59Speaker 2: Then when it was time to do the Suey Awards,
- 17:01Speaker 2: I would go home and then I'd have to start
- 17:04Speaker 2: editing at home. And we didn't have a great system.
- 17:07Speaker 2: It was me, you know, writing notes down on paper
- 17:10Speaker 2: throughout the year or whatever. And so I'd sit there
- 17:13Speaker 2: for two or three hours at night. Remember I have
- 17:15Speaker 2: a newborn at home. I'd sit there for two and
- 17:17Speaker 2: three hours at night doing the Suey Awards, and Dan
- 17:20Speaker 2: would call me, you know, and he's like, you love this, right,
- 17:22Speaker 2: you love this? This is your artwork. And I'd be like, yeah,
- 17:25Speaker 2: I do love this. But also there was a part
- 17:26Speaker 2: of me where it was like and then the moment
- 17:28Speaker 2: I did something that Dan wasn't thrilled with, like he
- 17:33Speaker 2: shared it with me, like, hey, that's not good, do
- 17:37Speaker 2: that again or whatever. And so yeah, it was it
- 17:39Speaker 2: was a lot of high pressure for me. The biggest
- 17:42Speaker 2: not to get I would say for both of us.
- 17:44Speaker 3: Yes, it was all consuming. It was very stressful, right well.
- 17:47Speaker 2: The biggest issue for me was thinking about think about
- 17:51Speaker 2: your job being keeping your best friend happy. Right well,
- 17:58Speaker 2: that's not a normal job when you're best friends with
- 18:01Speaker 2: someone or just friends with someone, like they're responsible for
- 18:04Speaker 2: their own happiness. You want to be there and be
- 18:07Speaker 2: a friend and you want to support as much you can,
- 18:09Speaker 2: but you also have your own life and there, you know.
- 18:11Speaker 2: But my job, he didn't realize it, but my job
- 18:14Speaker 2: was to make sure he was always happy. And that
- 18:17Speaker 2: makes a difficult friendship. And obviously it couldn't withstand that
- 18:20Speaker 2: for more than eight or nine years of that kind
- 18:22Speaker 2: of high pressure situation.
- 18:24Speaker 3: Right well, work and expectations it seems like out in
- 18:27Speaker 3: the way, And how could they not, right because now
- 18:29Speaker 3: you're bringing you're bringing an outside element.
- 18:31Speaker 2: Into a really good friendship. Right Yeah. It was just
- 18:34Speaker 2: like it was it was difficult where you know, you
- 18:37Speaker 2: kind of knew your role. You could argue with them
- 18:39Speaker 2: with something and you're ultimately going to stand down at
- 18:44Speaker 2: the end of the argument. He has to win the argument.
- 18:47Speaker 2: The show doesn't work if he doesn't win the argument,
- 18:50Speaker 2: and you'd have to stand down. But I didn't have
- 18:53Speaker 2: that relationship with him. He and I could butt heads
- 18:55Speaker 2: for three weeks over a topic on the phone, you know,
- 18:58Speaker 2: just because that was fun for us, and so like, yeah,
- 19:01Speaker 2: there were some elements of our friendship that got in
- 19:03Speaker 2: the way of the job.
- 19:04Speaker 3: I think we both dealt with different pressures. And that's
- 19:07Speaker 3: interesting because you're right to create a show the type
- 19:09Speaker 3: of show that we created. He you need a host
- 19:12Speaker 3: who's very demanding in particular, and dan is and b
- 19:16Speaker 3: you need someone who's great at putting together his vision,
- 19:20Speaker 3: and you were great at doing that.
- 19:22Speaker 2: But Dan never realized.
- 19:23Speaker 3: I don't think people realize how much work goes into
- 19:27Speaker 3: creating this stuff, even something like the series.
- 19:31Speaker 2: The pressure that I felt was a bit different. I
- 19:33Speaker 2: didn't want to miss the beats.
- 19:34Speaker 3: I didn't want to say the wrong thing, I didn't
- 19:36Speaker 3: want to wreck a bit. I didn't want to do
- 19:38Speaker 3: any of that eventually we got comfortable enough where I
- 19:41Speaker 3: could do anything. We would just make fun of it
- 19:44Speaker 3: or I was actually nailing the role. But there were
- 19:46Speaker 3: different kinds of pressures. But indeed there were pressures. I
- 19:48Speaker 3: never thought to myself that I didn't want to do radio.
- 19:52Speaker 3: I just wondered how long I could sustain this, and
- 19:54Speaker 3: how long before it was where Dan would.
- 19:57Speaker 2: Get mad at me and just say, hey, get out
- 19:58Speaker 2: of here. You know. Anyway, one of the dms that
- 20:01Speaker 2: I got talk about eighteen years, oh, ten years longer
- 20:09Speaker 2: than I big friends, damn it, somebody DMed. Can we
- 20:14Speaker 2: get a shirt? And again, let me promote my son's
- 20:17Speaker 2: T shirt shop because he gets one hundred percent of
- 20:21Speaker 2: the money. But there's really fun stuff on there. It's
- 20:24Speaker 2: not just like the Dolphins know your Quarterbacks T shirt.
- 20:27Speaker 2: There's fun stuff from our show. There's the podcast stuff,
- 20:31Speaker 2: and there's Mark Hackman's sports comic shirt. One of the
- 20:34Speaker 2: top selling shirts right now. The top selling shirt is
- 20:38Speaker 2: Hawk and Crowder and Solana and Jimmy. That's the top
- 20:41Speaker 2: selling shirt. Nice and I can't tell you how many
- 20:44Speaker 2: shirts he's sold. It's been just a phenomenal response. So
- 20:47Speaker 2: I appreciate everyone and I ask you, if you enjoy
- 20:49Speaker 2: this podcast, hey support his store. But the next top
- 20:53Speaker 2: selling shirt is in quote Sam Snead my God and
- 20:58Speaker 2: then the attribution underneath it Al Lombardo twenty eleven. Yes,
- 21:03Speaker 2: but I said I think in the last episode. And
- 21:04Speaker 2: the website is horse Muffins dot com. And if you
- 21:07Speaker 2: listen to this podcast on the regular, you should absolutely
- 21:09Speaker 2: buy something at horse Muffins dot com. Somebody DMS can
- 21:14Speaker 2: we get a shirt? Because I said to you you
- 21:16Speaker 2: have any suggestions, Somebody DMS can we get a shirt
- 21:19Speaker 2: that says Big Voice and then end quotes powered by
- 21:23Speaker 2: Julio Franco's Monster Cock, Which brings me to a phone
- 21:30Speaker 2: call that we once got. Yep, I believe the guy's
- 21:33Speaker 2: name was Alan. Was it Alan? I forget sure.
- 21:37Speaker 3: I just remember he had some information that I was
- 21:40Speaker 3: just never.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Expected a caller to have. Yes, he did not say
- 21:43Speaker 2: monster Cock, by the way, but we did create a
- 21:46Speaker 2: rejoin with the Big Voice that said the Dan Levinton
- 21:49Speaker 2: Joe powered by Julio Franco's Monster and then we bleaped
- 21:53Speaker 2: it out. We had Big Voice say it, but we
- 21:55Speaker 2: bleeped it out. But this was the actual call that
- 22:00Speaker 2: that brought about this particular direct message, which is about
- 22:04Speaker 2: seventeen years after that call. This was an actual call
- 22:08Speaker 2: that we took on the air.
- 22:11Speaker 1: MO.
- 22:11Speaker 2: You're on seven ninety MO.
- 22:14Speaker 6: Yes, I have a funny and kind of great story.
- 22:17Speaker 6: I don't know if you know that. Julio Franco used
- 22:20Speaker 6: to play in Mexico City before he was called up
- 22:22Speaker 6: by the braves Se and so from Mexico City, and
- 22:26Speaker 6: I was producing the post game show of the Mexico
- 22:29Speaker 6: City Tigers. He was crushing the league at times. He
- 22:32Speaker 6: had like five home runs that day, he was batting
- 22:35Speaker 6: five eighty something. So I send this Latino girl to
- 22:38Speaker 6: do the interview after the game because he had a
- 22:41Speaker 6: huge game. And she got into the dressing room and
- 22:45Speaker 6: she came out. You know the Latino skin, it's kind
- 22:47Speaker 6: of light brown, and she came out of the dressing
- 22:51Speaker 6: room whiter than Hubee brown. So I said, what's wrong
- 22:54Speaker 6: and she said, no, no, no, no, please, you need
- 22:56Speaker 6: to make this interview. I can concentrate. So I went
- 22:59Speaker 6: in with the you know, with the microphone and everything,
- 23:02Speaker 6: and Julio Franco was the interview with naked man. It
- 23:06Speaker 6: was the biggest monster that I've ever seen. Okay, so
- 23:13Speaker 6: I concentrated and I said, hey, Julio, well that's the
- 23:19Speaker 6: pay roll. If you want you want the interview, you
- 23:22Speaker 6: have to watch me. And I said, I'll watch you.
- 23:24Speaker 6: And man, since I'm not gay, since that day, I
- 23:29Speaker 6: don't feel sure about myself.
- 23:34Speaker 2: What a great story, sir, Thank you for sharing that.
- 23:39Speaker 2: What a delightful this really was? It was? It was delightful,
- 23:42Speaker 2: It was well told. The accent was perfect. Yeah, he
- 23:46Speaker 2: told him just with the right touch of us. It
- 23:49Speaker 2: was a very delicate touch. Yes, well, I will a
- 23:52Speaker 2: well told tale, delightful, better than my earl, curate and
- 23:55Speaker 2: story and has made me a Julio Franco fan for
- 23:58Speaker 2: reasons I'm not certain. Can you make that a promo?
- 24:00Speaker 2: Is it short enough? For long enough? Is enough? That
- 24:08Speaker 2: joke in the promo? It was a it was mo.
- 24:13Speaker 2: By the way, it was the caller MO. Did you
- 24:15Speaker 2: say it was al? What did I say?
- 24:17Speaker 1: AL?
- 24:18Speaker 2: I don't know. I said, so I'd let me get
- 24:20Speaker 2: you were close.
- 24:21Speaker 3: Yes, In hindsight, thinking about it, whiter than you be brown,
- 24:25Speaker 3: there is not a better person he could have used there.
- 24:29Speaker 2: That became a catchphrase on our show, Whiter than Hugh
- 24:31Speaker 2: be Brown. Yes, the beginning of the call wouldn't have
- 24:34Speaker 2: even made it past that in today's day and age.
- 24:37Speaker 2: I have a funny and kind of gay story for you. Okay,
- 24:41Speaker 2: that wouldn't have made like it would have been the
- 24:42Speaker 2: end of that.
- 24:43Speaker 1: We've been like.
- 24:44Speaker 3: Dropped immediately by the way we have played that call
- 24:47Speaker 3: for Tim Kirchin. Uh after the fact, and Tim like
- 24:50Speaker 3: when he calls into the show or when he called
- 24:52Speaker 3: it to the show, he just.
- 24:54Speaker 2: Has to hear that story every time. He loved it,
- 24:57Speaker 2: you know, I remember getting Tim Kirchin's react to that
- 25:00Speaker 2: when we heard that call, like that became a running
- 25:03Speaker 2: part of the show. Luel Franco's monster bleep. I don't
- 25:07Speaker 2: think I'm gonna have my son make a T shirt
- 25:09Speaker 2: on that because I just can't imagine many people would.
- 25:11Speaker 3: Would buy that shirt. But how about this shirt? It
- 25:15Speaker 3: was whiter than I was, whiter than you be Brown.
- 25:17Speaker 3: That's a good shirt.
- 25:18Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know if there's enough. Do
- 25:21Speaker 2: you remember? Because this is crazy. So someone comes up
- 25:25Speaker 2: to me this weekend and says, Hak, I've been I
- 25:27Speaker 2: talk about the my son's T shirt store on this
- 25:30Speaker 2: pod and on the radio show sometimes and this was
- 25:33Speaker 2: a listener of the The Levatard Show from years ago,
- 25:35Speaker 2: and he goes, hey, man, I own one of the
- 25:39Speaker 2: original horse Muffins dot Com T shirts. I'm a violent sneezer.
- 25:44Speaker 2: Now do you remember that phrase, I'm a violent sneezer?
- 25:49Speaker 3: I want to say it was one of the wrestlers.
- 25:51Speaker 3: I can't remember it was.
- 25:53Speaker 2: It was Fake Howard doing one of the wrestlers. I
- 25:57Speaker 2: believe it was. And I don't know how we got
- 25:59Speaker 2: on the topic. And someone will DM me after this
- 26:02Speaker 2: because everyone remembers this stuff better than we do. Yes,
- 26:05Speaker 2: I don't know who originally said or how we got
- 26:08Speaker 2: on this topic of I'm a violent sneezer, but someone
- 26:14Speaker 2: it may have been Dan throwing out his back because
- 26:16Speaker 2: he's a violent sneezer. I don't know. He could be wrong.
- 26:20Speaker 3: I think we were talking about a baseball pitcher who
- 26:24Speaker 3: had to go in the DL because he sneezed.
- 26:27Speaker 2: I think you're right, Yes, I think you're right. And
- 26:29Speaker 2: then somebody, somehow it morphed into I'm a violent sneezer.
- 26:35Speaker 2: That took off, and I remember back in the day,
- 26:37Speaker 2: I sold a bunch of T shirts that said I'm
- 26:39Speaker 2: a violent sneezer, and this guy had reminded me of it.
- 26:43Speaker 2: But the clip that we played all the time was
- 26:46Speaker 2: fake Howard doing fake Dusty Rhodes and doing I'm a
- 26:51Speaker 2: violent neither. And we used to play that all the time,
- 26:55Speaker 2: and I turned it into a big open. And this
- 26:58Speaker 2: big open, while it doesn't just revolve around violent sneezer,
- 27:02Speaker 2: it's such a great snapshot into some of the things
- 27:07Speaker 2: that were important to us at that time, or some
- 27:09Speaker 2: of the things that had just happened, you know, because
- 27:11Speaker 2: I would try to freshen up the big opens every
- 27:13Speaker 2: few weeks. So here is the violent Sneezer Big Open.
- 27:19Speaker 7: Attention, this is the Dan Levitta show, Dan Levant's art.
- 27:26Speaker 2: I'm fit, I'm wearing muscle shirts.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Attention.
- 27:31Speaker 2: That sweaty, bloated person you see on television is not
- 27:35Speaker 2: the real means stuts sport. Yeah, this is the real base.
- 27:45Speaker 4: Attention, this is de choic Tiger. This is the Dan.
- 28:01Speaker 4: I don't know how I got a show.
- 28:02Speaker 7: If you want to get in on the show called
- 28:05Speaker 7: eight eight eight seven nine oh three seven seven six
- 28:08Speaker 7: for Metro PCs customers, it's a free call. I found
- 28:12Speaker 7: seven ninety what's up?
- 28:14Speaker 6: This is your Boyoto Sinko and even listening to the
- 28:17Speaker 6: Dan Lebotard Show.
- 28:19Speaker 1: All guess sir on the AT and T Sports Line.
- 28:22Speaker 2: This is NBA Commissioner David Stern.
- 28:24Speaker 5: I've suspended Dan Lebttard's show from my listening for the
- 28:27Speaker 5: rest of the year.
- 28:28Speaker 2: I'm Allalon Sneether. I'm a Vigularty, I'm a Llalon Sneether.
- 28:33Speaker 2: I'm a Vigularty.
- 28:37Speaker 1: Hey.
- 28:38Speaker 2: This is my globe for Boston Red Rock.
- 28:40Speaker 4: And one thing I don't miss from leaving Miami is that.
- 28:43Speaker 2: Dan Levatard show.
- 28:45Speaker 7: Here's Dan Levatard and Studio Sun Sports Talk seven ninety
- 28:49Speaker 7: the ticks.
- 28:50Speaker 2: Whoa, I'm all sneth.
- 28:54Speaker 1: So great.
- 28:55Speaker 2: You get so much stuff in there. Yes, you know
- 28:58Speaker 2: who is saying throughout that big open A ten hot h.
- 29:07Speaker 2: I should know this. I feel terrible. I don't. It's
- 29:10Speaker 2: Sergeants Slaughter. I was gonna say Sergeant Slaughter. I swear
- 29:13Speaker 2: to you, I was going to say Sergeant Slaughter.
- 29:15Speaker 1: Jeez.
- 29:16Speaker 2: We used to have him on the show every now
- 29:17Speaker 2: and then.
- 29:17Speaker 7: I know.
- 29:18Speaker 2: We love wrestling, man, we really do. Yeah, such a
- 29:21Speaker 2: great little vehicle for us. Yes, anyway, that's the h
- 29:24Speaker 2: I'm a violence sneezer. I don't know if I should
- 29:26Speaker 2: bring that shirt back or not. The one shirt I
- 29:29Speaker 2: think that I'm missing in the store because there's the
- 29:31Speaker 2: same sneed one. There's Mark Hackman sports comic. There's the
- 29:35Speaker 2: with stugottson Hawkman Podcast logo shirt. I think there needs
- 29:39Speaker 2: to be a shirt that says, and we used to
- 29:41Speaker 2: sell it on the Old Horse Muffins, Hi, this is
- 29:44Speaker 2: Benny from Fort Lauderdale. And then underneath it we've established
- 29:49Speaker 2: that I love that. Yes, why don't we let the
- 29:51Speaker 2: listeners send in some shirts they like us? Yeah, sending
- 29:53Speaker 2: shirt ideas, just DM them to me on Instagram Radio,
- 29:57Speaker 2: Mark Hakman on in. There was other stuff I wanted
- 30:03Speaker 2: to get to today, but we ended up getting into
- 30:04Speaker 2: a deeper conversation.
- 30:06Speaker 1: About the show.
- 30:06Speaker 2: How was it expecting in future episodes? This is what
- 30:09Speaker 2: I have planned. I have the actual conversation of Dan
- 30:12Speaker 2: putting my son in the stroller in the middle of
- 30:15Speaker 2: the street, like how we all reacted to it the
- 30:17Speaker 2: next day on the show. I have the Suie Award
- 30:22Speaker 2: for Funniest Moment two thousand and six. Wow, because the
- 30:26Speaker 2: last couple Suies we've listened to were two thousand and seven.
- 30:29Speaker 2: I thought that was the earliest iteration of the awards.
- 30:32Speaker 2: I have found the two thousand and six sue Awards.
- 30:36Speaker 2: So we have funniest moment from two thousand and six,
- 30:38Speaker 2: and we also have most painful or uncomfortable moment in
- 30:43Speaker 2: the two thousand and six Suey Awards. So I'm going
- 30:45Speaker 2: to get to those in the next next couple of episodes,
- 30:48Speaker 2: and then I would if there's a shirt you want
- 30:50Speaker 2: on horse Muffins dot com, DM to me. If there's
- 30:54Speaker 2: something you want to hear, dm it to me on
- 30:58Speaker 2: Instagram Radio Mark Hakman, and I'll implore you again, if
- 31:02Speaker 2: you enjoy this podcast, go buy a shirt or a
- 31:04Speaker 2: hat from uh from horse Muffins dot com. That's my
- 31:09Speaker 2: son's store. He gets one hundred percent of the proceeds
- 31:13Speaker 2: and you get a cool shirt out of it. So
- 31:16Speaker 2: it's a win win for everybody. Yes, And if anybody
- 31:19Speaker 2: wants to meet at what a Burger in Largo, let's
- 31:23Speaker 2: say Tuesday at noon, I may be there if he
- 31:27Speaker 2: leaves now, we'll get there in time.
- 31:32Speaker 3: I thought you were gonna ask me three nicknames, and
- 31:34Speaker 3: when I was done answering I was going to tell you, hey,
- 31:37Speaker 3: we better get out of here if we want to
- 31:39Speaker 3: get to what a burger in time?
- 31:40Speaker 2: I can't belate neither of you have been to water Burger. No, no, no,
- 31:45Speaker 2: you've been to Culvers No no, no, really you have
- 31:51Speaker 2: like the fast food like. I love all the like
- 31:54Speaker 2: I love when the Shamrock Shake comes out every year,
- 31:56Speaker 2: and when the McRib comes out every year. Yes, I
- 31:59Speaker 2: know you did. I'm familiar with your game. You don't
- 32:01Speaker 2: do any of that stuff. I mean, no, Taylor, you
- 32:06Speaker 2: ever had a McRib?
- 32:08Speaker 1: Oh?
- 32:08Speaker 5: I've had a mcreds before, and but I haven't had
- 32:11Speaker 5: one in probably a decade.
- 32:12Speaker 2: Oh, fuck you. Stuff's like health food. I wonder you
- 32:17Speaker 2: look so terrible? You ever had a Shamrock Shake?
- 32:22Speaker 7: Now?
- 32:23Speaker 2: The color grosses me up. You would you try the
- 32:26Speaker 2: new cheese steak that's being offered at Arby's. I keep
- 32:31Speaker 2: seeing the commercial for this. It looks terrible, But there
- 32:34Speaker 2: is something that's drawing me to I'll tell you what
- 32:36Speaker 2: it is.
- 32:37Speaker 1: We have the meats.
- 32:41Speaker 2: Is there any way you would go to Arby's and
- 32:43Speaker 2: get a cheat? When's the last time you've been to Arby's.
- 32:45Speaker 2: I've never been to Arby's. You've never been to Arby's
- 32:49Speaker 2: roast beef. I don't eat roast beef either. I've been
- 32:54Speaker 2: to Arby's in twenty years. Yeah yeah, the next time
- 32:57Speaker 2: will be my first time. So you've never been to
- 32:59Speaker 2: ours either?
- 33:01Speaker 1: Nah?
- 33:01Speaker 2: No, no, but I might have to go because I
- 33:03Speaker 2: got to tell you. This whole thing with the lettuce
- 33:05Speaker 2: is really getting in the way of my You know,
- 33:08Speaker 2: I have an alternate take on that. I love complete evacuation.
- 33:12Speaker 2: I used to do the live spots for Squatty Potty
- 33:15Speaker 2: at my age. There's honestly nothing better than complete evacuation.
- 33:20Speaker 2: So I've been eating more salad than ever. Most people
- 33:24Speaker 2: are trying to cut back. I want the explosive diarrhea
- 33:35Speaker 2: three nicknames. You cannot leave this podcast without getting three nicknames.
