- 0:15Speaker 1: some of the heinous migrant criminals caught because of President
- 0:19Speaker 1: Donald J. Trump's leadership. I'm Christy nom the United States

- 1:00Speaker 3: All right, guys, welcome back e y l atl Edition.
- 1:04Speaker 3: You know this is our second home man. We love
- 1:06Speaker 3: it Atlanta. So this is going to be a legendary
- 1:09Speaker 3: episode because this is always kind of my favorite episodes.
- 1:12Speaker 3: I like to get the backdrop stories of music and
- 1:15Speaker 3: entertainment and stuff like that we grew up, especially grew
- 1:18Speaker 3: up on Yeah, so everybody knows, like, you know, Chris
- 1:21Speaker 3: Gotti and in all of these episodes that we do,
- 1:25Speaker 3: Dame oh yeah, shout out to Dame Kenny Burns. These
- 1:28Speaker 3: are all like my favorite episodes because I like to
- 1:31Speaker 3: learn from the ogs, so this is right in line
- 1:33Speaker 3: with that. We got the privilege of speaking to Jason
- 1:35Speaker 3: Jeter better known as j Jeter. For me, I was
- 1:39Speaker 3: a huge TI fan growing up, so that's the first
- 1:41Speaker 3: time I heard your thing. He used to always say
- 1:43Speaker 3: your name like JJ to JJA. Then I used to
- 1:45Speaker 3: read like source magazines and stuff like that, and they
- 1:47Speaker 3: was like, yeah, Jason Ja the business partner and he's like,
- 1:51Speaker 3: you know, the business behind Grant Hustle tis record label.
- 1:54Speaker 3: So I'm like, all right, so that's how I know
- 1:56Speaker 3: who you are. And then it was crazy that you
- 1:58Speaker 3: know how life happens and now we get to do
- 2:01Speaker 3: an interview with you. But yeah, so Jason is he
- 2:04Speaker 3: wears many hats, so he had a record he still
- 2:08Speaker 3: has record label. He was responsible for a lot of
- 2:13Speaker 3: the major artists in this last decade two decades actually.
- 2:17Speaker 4: I think unknowingly, people don't know the game, like.
- 2:19Speaker 3: B O B Killer, Mike Travis, Scott, Iggy Azalea. Of course,
- 2:24Speaker 3: t I Trade the Truth, Young Droe, to name a few,
- 2:29Speaker 3: just a couple.
- 2:31Speaker 2: I say, I definitely got to work with a lot
- 2:32Speaker 2: of great people one way or another. We got to
- 2:36Speaker 2: work together, you know, and super dope experiences.
- 2:39Speaker 5: And view the man of mystery for a while. Like
- 2:41Speaker 5: I told you, like we always heard your name, but
- 2:43Speaker 5: we never saw you. And I think, like I said,
- 2:45Speaker 5: like big things popping in the beginning, I'm like, that's
- 2:48Speaker 5: got to be him. That's got to be him.
- 2:51Speaker 3: So and and he's actually the owner of Heavy Sounds Lab,
- 2:56Speaker 3: which is a whole revolutionary approach to the music industry.
- 2:59Speaker 3: We gonna talk abut that as well. So we are
- 3:01Speaker 3: a long conversation. So first and foremost, thank you for
- 3:04Speaker 3: joining us. Appreciate it, Nah, thank you.
- 3:05Speaker 2: For having me.
- 3:06Speaker 6: Of course, I'm a fan of the show, watched the show,
- 3:09Speaker 6: and you know, it's dope to be here.
- 3:10Speaker 7: I appreciate it.
- 3:11Speaker 3: So let's let's get right into it. As far as
- 3:12Speaker 3: the music, so you you found TII I heard the story.
- 3:17Speaker 3: I read the story about that. So TII one of
- 3:19Speaker 3: the greatest rappers of all time, definitely one of the
- 3:23Speaker 3: best to ever come out of this South.
- 3:25Speaker 7: Revolutionized trap music.
- 3:28Speaker 3: It's interesting because that it's like a whole genre of music,
- 3:31Speaker 3: even though I don't know if his sound is really
- 3:33Speaker 3: trap music like what it is today. It's a different story.
- 3:36Speaker 3: But sound has change.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Yeah, but you grow.
- 3:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:40Speaker 3: But so I say that to say, you found him?
- 3:43Speaker 3: So how did you find Tia? What's that story?
- 3:47Speaker 6: I'm Ochoy Atlanta in like ninety seven and I started
- 3:50Speaker 6: working at Patchwork Recording the studio and Patchwork was was
- 3:57Speaker 6: young hip hop studio, like know, so for me coming
- 4:01Speaker 6: to the city and I'm seeing it's like you said,
- 4:03Speaker 6: you're reading credits, I'm reading credits.
- 4:04Speaker 2: I was the same person, you know.
- 4:06Speaker 6: So I'm seeing like Patchwork on the back of Outcast
- 4:09Speaker 6: albums and and just the different more hip hop albums
- 4:13Speaker 6: that's coming out of Atlanta. So I ended up going
- 4:16Speaker 6: to the studio, getting the job, the internship, the hold On.
- 4:20Speaker 6: They had a record label upstairs, which was an independent label.
- 4:24Speaker 6: The artists like raz Casts, Me and Green Rest in
- 4:26Speaker 6: Peace Mean Green just died and and a guy named
- 4:29Speaker 6: missed the Voodle and then downstairs they had the recording studio.
- 4:33Speaker 2: You know. So for me, I pretty much I interned upstairs.
- 4:37Speaker 6: I worked records college at college radio, you know, and
- 4:41Speaker 6: then downstairs I would work overnight. I was like the
- 4:45Speaker 6: nighttime studio manager, right, So that means I'm doing everything.
- 4:48Speaker 6: I'm opening the door, you know, taking out the trash,
- 4:52Speaker 6: just whatever the artists need, they need some weed, whatever,
- 4:55Speaker 6: I'm figuring it out.
- 4:57Speaker 2: I'm doing everything, you know.
- 4:59Speaker 6: And and you know, like I always say, like that position,
- 5:02Speaker 6: you know, I put myself right in the middle of traffic.
- 5:05Speaker 6: You know, So everybody in Atlanta, if you was a producer,
- 5:10Speaker 6: if you was a manager, artist, A and R, a
- 5:14Speaker 6: future something, because you and the unto ride. You know
- 5:17Speaker 6: what I'm saying, Like, like I got I put myself
- 5:19Speaker 6: at the perfect place because I got to meet everybody
- 5:22Speaker 6: opening the door and you know, and now of course
- 5:25Speaker 6: gett an opportunity to really start knowing people.
- 5:27Speaker 4: You know.
- 5:28Speaker 6: So I'm fresh out of New Jersey, New York. So
- 5:32Speaker 6: I'm down here and I had already interned at Arista
- 5:35Speaker 6: Records in New York. I had already sold mixtapes in
- 5:38Speaker 6: high school. I had already like had a lot of
- 5:40Speaker 6: experiences like up until this time, you know, so when
- 5:44Speaker 6: I'm here now, I'm very strategic and I know what
- 5:47Speaker 6: I'm kind of trying to put together, you know, And
- 5:50Speaker 6: I ended.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Up meeting DJ toon DJ toon Superdope producer.
- 5:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:57Speaker 6: At the time, during this time in Atlanta, Noontime was
- 6:00Speaker 6: like everything, Like anybody know about Atlanta, you know about
- 6:03Speaker 6: production producers, Like Noontime was like she was like the mob.
- 6:08Speaker 6: If you was a producer and you wasn't a part
- 6:11Speaker 6: of Noontime, you really wasn't eating, you know what I'm saying.
- 6:14Speaker 4: Like that.
- 6:16Speaker 6: Was a that was a company by three young entrepreneurs Nooney,
- 6:24Speaker 6: Henry Lee, Chris Hicks, and Ryan Glover, you know, and
- 6:28Speaker 6: like for real, like y'all need to get with them.
- 6:31Speaker 6: If anybody don't know them, you need to like know
- 6:33Speaker 6: the history of like Noontime, because that ship was the
- 6:36Speaker 6: blueprint for a lot of people who came behind.
- 6:39Speaker 4: That organized noises after that organized.
- 6:42Speaker 6: Noises during the same time see Noon Times Downside. Or
- 6:45Speaker 6: why a lot of people don't know them is because
- 6:47Speaker 6: they didn't really have an artist that really blew. But
- 6:50Speaker 6: like now on the business side, like when it came
- 6:52Speaker 6: to like writers and producers, they had like Jay zy Faye,
- 6:58Speaker 6: then uh Brian Michael Cox, like John t Austin, Jay Dubb.
- 7:04Speaker 6: They had like a lot of dudes that that were
- 7:07Speaker 6: like on every album, like from from R and B
- 7:11Speaker 6: to like rap doing during this era of music, you know,
- 7:14Speaker 6: and they had their own publishing companies, so like for real,
- 7:16Speaker 6: like shout out to them.
- 7:18Speaker 2: They inspired a lot of people, you know.
- 7:20Speaker 6: But during this time, you had noontime in Atlanta, you
- 7:23Speaker 6: had noontime, you had organized noise who of course were
- 7:27Speaker 6: doing eight thing, and of course you had Jermaine dupri
- 7:30Speaker 6: So so death and and it was kind of like.
- 7:33Speaker 2: You had clicks, you know.
- 7:34Speaker 6: So I really kind of said to Tom, like, Yo, Tom,
- 7:38Speaker 6: you dope, but you by yourself, you know, so like
- 7:41Speaker 6: why don't we find an artist together.
- 7:43Speaker 2: So that you can really display your music properly on
- 7:47Speaker 2: you know.
- 7:47Speaker 6: And that's what led us to going out and trying
- 7:51Speaker 6: to find an artist, you know, and then.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Not too late after that, we find.
- 7:56Speaker 4: Too you know.
- 7:58Speaker 6: Coincidentally, DJ Toompe grew up with a guy named Tremmell
- 8:02Speaker 6: Morgan rest in Peace, who was Tip's older.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Cousin, you know.
- 8:07Speaker 6: So that's how he kind of found him and literally
- 8:12Speaker 6: brings meeting music.
- 8:13Speaker 2: He's like, yo, what you think. I'm like, Yo, this
- 8:14Speaker 2: kid is dope.
- 8:15Speaker 6: He had a few records that that was recorded, you know,
- 8:19Speaker 6: and you know, from there we was like, yo, let's
- 8:21Speaker 6: meet him, let's work.
- 8:23Speaker 5: So so you meet him there, right, and then is
- 8:25Speaker 5: that the point where you're like, all right, we're gonna
- 8:27Speaker 5: take this kid, you create grandhustle management or are we
- 8:31Speaker 5: just trying to get him signed to a label.
- 8:33Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 8:33Speaker 6: So so so we meet, we meet, we hit it off,
- 8:36Speaker 6: we do it a demo tape, immediately go studio, do
- 8:40Speaker 6: four records, Tip and to and get a deal, you know,
- 8:45Speaker 6: get a deal, get him signed the Ghetto Vision the
- 8:47Speaker 6: Face Records. And at that point, yes, that's when Grunds
- 8:51Speaker 6: Some Management started as my management company. And then he
- 8:54Speaker 6: was signing the Ghetto Vision Slash the Face Records for
- 8:57Speaker 6: the first project.
- 8:58Speaker 2: I'm serious.
- 8:59Speaker 5: It just made me think of the line when he's like, yo, man,
- 9:01Speaker 5: if La could just see how wrong he would be.
- 9:03Speaker 5: I told you nobody stronger than me. I told you so.
- 9:07Speaker 3: So so all right, so you you did the first album,
- 9:10Speaker 3: which commercially wasn't really that successful. That's I'm serious project, right, yeah,
- 9:16Speaker 3: So then how do you do that joint venture with it?
- 9:19Speaker 7: Was it Atlantic Atlantic? So how did that come about?
- 9:22Speaker 3: Because at the time they said it was like kind
- 9:23Speaker 3: of revolutionary situation with right, yeah, kind of like explain
- 9:26Speaker 3: that a little bit.
- 9:27Speaker 6: Yeah, So so we did the first album I'm serious
- 9:30Speaker 6: and and like you said, la, like they didn't see
- 9:32Speaker 6: it because you know, it wasn't social media and.
- 9:35Speaker 4: Ship then I remember Beanie Man was on the track.
- 9:38Speaker 6: But but for real, like the first album, if you
- 9:42Speaker 6: if you from the Southeast region.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Like the first album is like a classic, you know
- 9:46Speaker 2: what I'm saying.
- 9:46Speaker 6: So that gave us the ability to do shows like
- 9:49Speaker 6: crazy throughout the South, you know.
- 9:51Speaker 2: So for us, we just burning through the South, you.
- 9:55Speaker 6: Know, which which lay They couldn't really see it, but
- 10:00Speaker 6: clearly we're doing shows, so we.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Know what's happening, you know what I mean.
- 10:04Speaker 6: And and really he kept he wanted us to do
- 10:07Speaker 6: another album, whereas we were like, now let's go deeper. Let'
- 10:10Speaker 6: choose some more videos of this album, you know, and
- 10:12Speaker 6: our thing was if you, if you don't help us
- 10:14Speaker 6: work this album, right when we.
- 10:15Speaker 2: See the traction, why should we do it again? You know,
- 10:19Speaker 2: and we really didn't agree, so he agreed to let
- 10:21Speaker 2: us go. You know.
- 10:22Speaker 6: So now at that point, you know, for really it
- 10:25Speaker 6: was like the best thing that could have happened, you know.
- 10:27Speaker 6: You know, like at this point, like we were already
- 10:30Speaker 6: moving throughout the South. So I'm already when I come
- 10:33Speaker 6: to go to a market, we hitting the mom and
- 10:36Speaker 6: pop record stores, which still existed back then, you know
- 10:39Speaker 6: what I'm saying, Like we're doing the show, like we
- 10:42Speaker 6: get into contacts at the radio station, all nine. So
- 10:45Speaker 6: at this point, I got all my information. So now
- 10:49Speaker 6: back home with fifty cents doing mixtapes, you know what
- 10:52Speaker 6: I'm saying. So I'm like, okay, like let's just take
- 10:54Speaker 6: some of this music some people heard, some people didn't hear,
- 10:58Speaker 6: you know, and let's create out started creating out mixtape series,
- 11:01Speaker 6: you know. So we started doing that. We created this
- 11:03Speaker 6: brand called in the Streets. You know, we gota no
- 11:09Speaker 6: no no, no no. That wasn't DJ drama. We started
- 11:12Speaker 6: literally t I and the PSC in the Streets and
- 11:15Speaker 6: it was wholesc Yeah, and they did the first mixtape
- 11:20Speaker 6: and that mixtape was was crazy, you know. So that
- 11:22Speaker 6: mixtape was like we're selling them, We're shipping them Mama
- 11:25Speaker 6: Pop stores. Of course, people bootlegging them, everybody in the
- 11:29Speaker 6: streets like it was on fire, you know. But during
- 11:33Speaker 6: this time, I found DJ Drama had a had a
- 11:37Speaker 6: flyer in the barbershop, like he got like his artwork
- 11:41Speaker 6: to his fly in the barbershop. So I'm starting to
- 11:44Speaker 6: see like these DJ Drama flyers like in obscure places.
- 11:47Speaker 6: So you gotta think Kangs. The girls hadn't even done
- 11:49Speaker 6: nothing with no artists. So I hit DJ Drama because
- 11:54Speaker 6: I already know, like our mixtapes is going so crazy,
- 11:57Speaker 6: but we're not really in the mixtape business for real, right,
- 12:00Speaker 6: We're just doing this ship as a means to get
- 12:02Speaker 6: some traction, and you know, but you know, I was like,
- 12:05Speaker 6: I thought it made sense too, because once again I'm
- 12:08Speaker 6: looking at mom what came before me with Clue and
- 12:10Speaker 6: with Rock and Fell and all of that. So I'm like, yo,
- 12:12Speaker 6: we need a DJ. So I had Drama. We get
- 12:16Speaker 6: with Drama. We started kind of like building with Drama,
- 12:19Speaker 6: but we didn't do a mixtape with Drama think until
- 12:21Speaker 6: like maybe after our first two mixtapes and then we
- 12:24Speaker 6: did a mixtape combined with drama.
- 12:26Speaker 2: You know.
- 12:27Speaker 6: But long story short, those mixtapes is what got us traction.
- 12:31Speaker 6: You know what I'm saying, those mixtapes, you know, you
- 12:35Speaker 6: know how I go supplying demand, you know, so they
- 12:38Speaker 6: got the demand right and then regular labels start doubling
- 12:41Speaker 6: back and calling, you know, and we ended up doing
- 12:44Speaker 6: it with Atlantic, but we had like everybody except for
- 12:48Speaker 6: like Jimmy Ilvian, everybody else.
- 12:51Speaker 7: Just based off for like the bus that she was
- 12:53Speaker 7: building in the street.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah exactly.
- 12:55Speaker 7: So Atlantic goes it was a fifty to fifty joint.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that was a fifty to fifty.
- 12:59Speaker 7: So a fifty fifty Like what is it?
- 13:00Speaker 3: Because I hit that a lot, but like what does
- 13:01Speaker 3: that actually mean? Like you just split revenue fifty? Are
- 13:04Speaker 3: you responsible for fifty of promotion? Like or it is
- 13:07Speaker 3: just the revenue go to so.
- 13:09Speaker 6: A record company is always paying the money, Like you're
- 13:11Speaker 6: not really coming to the table paying money. But you know,
- 13:13Speaker 6: like fifty to fifty is a net profit split. So
- 13:15Speaker 6: after we you know the expenses, now these profits we
- 13:19Speaker 6: split fifty fifty down.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Is that the standard? Like that like record labels would
- 13:24Speaker 3: have like a rough riders. Is that like fifty fifty.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, for most artists that's the standard.
- 13:28Speaker 6: And then you have, of course people who will say,
- 13:30Speaker 6: I got a distribution deal. So you know that that's
- 13:33Speaker 6: even going even deeper. Right, So now it depends on
- 13:36Speaker 6: which is split is even with a distribution deal, so
- 13:39Speaker 6: verbage can be can be interesting because you can have
- 13:42Speaker 6: a fifty to fifty deal and you can still have a.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Version.
- 13:46Speaker 6: Whereas now, at a certain point, after a certain amount
- 13:48Speaker 6: of years, the masters revert back to you, versus somebody
- 13:51Speaker 6: can say, oh, I gotta deal all my masters, I
- 13:53Speaker 6: gotta deal. I got a reversion all my masters in
- 13:56Speaker 6: five years?
- 13:56Speaker 7: Did you got did you guys have the masters?
- 13:59Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah, we got a version?
- 14:00Speaker 4: Yeah, reverted back version.
- 14:01Speaker 7: How does that work?
- 14:03Speaker 2: So basically, after ten years of.
- 14:06Speaker 6: If you do a deal with say whoever, whatever, Sony Universe,
- 14:11Speaker 6: whoever you say, after ten years, the masters.
- 14:15Speaker 5: Revert back for the entire catalog, the entire catalog.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 14:19Speaker 5: So at that at that point when y'all get to Atlantic,
- 14:21Speaker 5: this is the first time you'll put out trap music.
- 14:23Speaker 4: That the first album that comes out, and then and.
- 14:26Speaker 5: Does that create because in my mom I'm trying to
- 14:28Speaker 5: paint this picture clearly. So we dropped well you guys,
- 14:31Speaker 5: trap trap music, and then Grand Hustle Records comes from
- 14:35Speaker 5: No no.
- 14:35Speaker 2: No no no no no no.
- 14:36Speaker 4: We walked in the doorway brown okay, okay music.
- 14:39Speaker 2: So after I'm serious, it was over. We hit the streets.
- 14:42Speaker 6: We did the mixtapes like one volume two. This you
- 14:46Speaker 6: gotta think we had during this time. We got powf
- 14:48Speaker 6: on our mixtapes, we got Fox Around on mixtapes. We
- 14:51Speaker 6: got the record Never Scared came from a mixtape, you
- 14:54Speaker 6: know what I'm saying. So like we got records that's
- 14:56Speaker 6: like it's coming big.
- 14:57Speaker 4: Records from we heard them. We heard him in New York.
- 15:01Speaker 6: Yeah, so you know at that point, you know flindh Man,
- 15:04Speaker 6: So you know, at that point, it's like, wow.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Would we just do artists.
- 15:08Speaker 3: I'm interested to know the backstory on this. We gotta
- 15:11Speaker 3: get Tia on the show too. But it was because
- 15:14Speaker 3: I was I was in I think I was in college.
- 15:17Speaker 3: I was in Baltimore in college, and up until that point,
- 15:20Speaker 3: I honestly never listened to any Southern music. I was
- 15:23Speaker 3: like really really New York, Like I grew up on
- 15:25Speaker 3: mob d ray Kwan nine stuff like that. So I
- 15:28Speaker 3: was really and then but Ti I was the first
- 15:30Speaker 3: person that I saw from the South that reminded me
- 15:33Speaker 3: of somebody from New York, like his style, like you
- 15:36Speaker 3: know what I mean, Like he he looked like something
- 15:39Speaker 3: like he didn't have gold teeth in his mouth, he
- 15:40Speaker 3: had a fa So it's like I'm interested. I mean,
- 15:44Speaker 3: you're from New York, So was that did you have
- 15:48Speaker 3: some influence in like or was He's just like a
- 15:50Speaker 3: different person, Like I mean, you know.
- 15:52Speaker 6: It's interesting because when I met him, that's how he was,
- 15:56Speaker 6: you know what I'm saying, And that's what to me,
- 15:59Speaker 6: that's definitely was like okay, like during this time outcast
- 16:03Speaker 6: is like everything in that you know what I'm saying.
- 16:06Speaker 6: So it's like everybody got dressed, they got gold team,
- 16:09Speaker 6: it's like a model.
- 16:11Speaker 2: Everybody has that influence. Think about the young bloods, Jim
- 16:14Speaker 2: like all of those artists.
- 16:15Speaker 6: Like that's how it was for real, you know, so
- 16:17Speaker 6: for me seeing them and seeing that right like yo,
- 16:20Speaker 6: damn polo shirt fade.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Teem like this is something interesting, right, you know, like
- 16:31Speaker 2: what when you look.
- 16:32Speaker 6: At it, the craziest thing is this, right tips dad
- 16:35Speaker 6: lived in Harlem. Okay, I used to go to New
- 16:38Speaker 6: York during the summertimes, just the same way if you
- 16:41Speaker 6: was from up south, you might go down south for
- 16:43Speaker 6: the summer. You used to go to New York for
- 16:44Speaker 6: the summer, you know what I'm saying. So that's something
- 16:47Speaker 6: that kind of you know, you always got.
- 16:48Speaker 3: To think about that nap swagger like us makes more sense.
- 16:53Speaker 3: So all right, so y'all, y'all blow it off the
- 16:55Speaker 3: door with trap music. That's like I said, that changed
- 16:57Speaker 3: the game. And then right off the gate, like y'all,
- 17:00Speaker 3: I start with the the label.
- 17:03Speaker 7: So how did how did that?
- 17:05Speaker 6: All?
- 17:05Speaker 7: Right? So it's one thing to have.
- 17:06Speaker 3: A superstar artist, sure, but I'm assuming it's it's not
- 17:10Speaker 3: as easy to like grow it and have other artists
- 17:13Speaker 3: come in like that?
- 17:14Speaker 7: How that? How did that work?
- 17:16Speaker 2: You know?
- 17:16Speaker 6: I mean, you know, it's like you said, it's challenging.
- 17:19Speaker 6: You know, it's definitely challenging because even when you're doing
- 17:22Speaker 6: a partnership with an Atlantic depth cham whoever it is,
- 17:27Speaker 6: you're getting a deal on this, you getting this joint
- 17:30Speaker 6: venture deal on the strength of this, right, you know what,
- 17:36Speaker 6: So to truly get them to look around that at
- 17:38Speaker 6: any point as hard as hell.
- 17:40Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying.
- 17:41Speaker 6: You look like it's super challenging, you know, But I
- 17:45Speaker 6: think for us, I think we did a decent job
- 17:48Speaker 6: for real, you know when you think about like we
- 17:52Speaker 6: really went in a lot of different directions. You know,
- 17:55Speaker 6: we did the hustle and flow sound sound we did that.
- 17:59Speaker 6: That was that was a great experience working with John Singleton. Obviously,
- 18:03Speaker 6: you know the movie like Want an Academy Award. You
- 18:07Speaker 6: know what I'm saying with with the with the with
- 18:09Speaker 6: the record, you know, so, yeah, it's tough, man, because
- 18:17Speaker 6: even for artists too, Like a lot of times artists
- 18:20Speaker 6: like they want to me and my man Clay shout
- 18:24Speaker 6: out clay Man. We always had it saying like yo,
- 18:27Speaker 6: artist is hard for artists to get off the yacht
- 18:29Speaker 6: and get back on their tugboat, you know what I'm saying.
- 18:32Speaker 2: Like, so, you know, you think if you're.
- 18:33Speaker 6: Artist signed to another artist, it's easy to you know,
- 18:37Speaker 6: ride his way and be on his rider and be
- 18:40Speaker 6: at the hotels and all that ship his reality. But
- 18:44Speaker 6: when you think about your reality, like you know what
- 18:47Speaker 6: I'm saying, I gotta get out here and really grown
- 18:49Speaker 6: from the from the bottom up, you know, So that
- 18:51Speaker 6: part a lot of artists.
- 18:52Speaker 2: Too, you know they kind of mentally, you know, like.
- 18:56Speaker 3: Do you think that that's an interesting point that you
- 18:57Speaker 3: bring up because you see, like gu it and it
- 19:00Speaker 3: was like Lloyd Banks, to me, one of the greatest
- 19:03Speaker 3: lyrics is but they never once fifty decided that he
- 19:06Speaker 3: was cool off of them. They never did anything right.
- 19:09Speaker 3: And it's like for the most cruise that's usually the case,
- 19:13Speaker 3: right every now and then you have somebody like a
- 19:15Speaker 3: Jim Jones who like started as a hype man and
- 19:19Speaker 3: now became actually probably the biggest member in the group.
- 19:21Speaker 7: But for the most.
- 19:22Speaker 3: Part, it's like you have a lead rapper, he has
- 19:24Speaker 3: his crew, they're like, you know, the Saint Lunatics disrespect.
- 19:29Speaker 3: But then it's like when he leaves, so it's like
- 19:31Speaker 3: it's kind of like a gift in a curve. Now
- 19:32Speaker 3: this God's crazy shout.
- 19:35Speaker 4: And shot shout the dirty.
- 19:45Speaker 7: It's like a gift in the curse in a way, right.
- 19:47Speaker 6: Absolutely, it's a gift in the curse for sure, man,
- 19:49Speaker 6: because too, let's be honest, like a lot of times
- 19:53Speaker 6: the rapper is the CEO of the company, right like,
- 19:56Speaker 6: and no matter what, no matter how business great your business,
- 20:01Speaker 6: you are still an artists, you know, so you are
- 20:03Speaker 6: still you know, it's it's gonna be different, you know,
- 20:06Speaker 6: things treatment, attention.
- 20:08Speaker 2: All of that. You know, like you're an artist, You're
- 20:10Speaker 2: gonna go for opportunities for yourself.
- 20:12Speaker 6: Like so I think that it's it's super challenging. It's
- 20:15Speaker 6: a lot of dynamics that come into it.
- 20:17Speaker 2: You know.
- 20:17Speaker 6: That's why typically I think when you when you see
- 20:20Speaker 6: at work, you really have the artists and the and
- 20:23Speaker 6: the and the business person you know, myself and Tip
- 20:27Speaker 6: or Dame Jay or you know what I'm saying, It's
- 20:30Speaker 6: like you gotta have some balance because you got.
- 20:32Speaker 2: To have somebody that's kind of still fighting for.
- 20:34Speaker 6: Like the underdog and the new one, having that that
- 20:37Speaker 6: that hunger for the business too, you know what I'm saying,
- 20:40Speaker 6: Like you think like I was a fan of hip
- 20:41Speaker 6: hop before I met.
- 20:42Speaker 2: Too, you know what I'm saying, Like I saw a crushable,
- 20:45Speaker 2: I knew what I wanted to do.
- 20:48Speaker 6: It's like I got the same hunger as him when
- 20:50Speaker 6: we click up because like, yo, I want to do
- 20:52Speaker 6: this and you want to do this. Damn we can
- 20:54Speaker 6: do this together.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Pom.
- 20:55Speaker 6: You know, what I'm saying, Like, so I think that
- 20:58Speaker 6: that's truly like the best nation that you could possibly
- 21:01Speaker 6: have in it.
- 21:01Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that that what you're saying.
- 21:04Speaker 5: As you were saying, I'm like, Yo, you guys are
- 21:05Speaker 5: the perfect match, right because this guy is an artist.
- 21:08Speaker 5: He's also the co owner of the label. But like
- 21:10Speaker 5: you got the business, Like you're gonna take care of
- 21:12Speaker 5: the business. Nobody you don't, They don't see you. But
- 21:14Speaker 5: you're making all the moves right, So like is it
- 21:17Speaker 5: your vision to expand it outside of the music and
- 21:20Speaker 5: just let tip focus on the music. So as like
- 21:22Speaker 5: we're getting into films, we get into clothing, right because
- 21:25Speaker 5: at l was a situation that in the King album,
- 21:28Speaker 5: like it was perfect time, Perfect time. You want to
- 21:33Speaker 5: talk about perfect time? And like at that point it
- 21:36Speaker 5: was like, Yo, this guy is not the King of
- 21:37Speaker 5: the South.
- 21:38Speaker 7: What you know about that?
- 21:39Speaker 4: This is like the biggest guy in rap music?
- 21:41Speaker 2: Now that was perfect time.
- 21:42Speaker 7: That was big.
- 21:43Speaker 2: It's funny, man.
- 21:44Speaker 6: I mean like I couldn't really tell you how it started,
- 21:46Speaker 6: but the hunger.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Was was was matched, you know what I mean?
- 21:50Speaker 6: Like as far as like yo, at the opportunity to
- 21:53Speaker 6: do this and that and this and that, like just.
- 21:55Speaker 2: Being that the blueprints was already laid before us.
- 21:58Speaker 6: So we stood into the game like we in a
- 22:01Speaker 6: fashion so naturally all right, like yeah, we're gonna go
- 22:04Speaker 6: to fashion at the right time.
- 22:06Speaker 2: You know.
- 22:06Speaker 4: So you just watched the cruise before.
- 22:08Speaker 2: You just watched the cruise before, right, So the same
- 22:10Speaker 2: thing with film.
- 22:11Speaker 6: What happened on the film side, It's crazy because somebody
- 22:13Speaker 6: had reached out to me, like a casting agency that
- 22:16Speaker 6: hit me about tip auditioning for barbershop, you know, so
- 22:21Speaker 6: he and we wasn't prepared like they saw like this
- 22:25Speaker 6: was like they saw an interview on him in the
- 22:28Speaker 6: magazine and was like, yeah, we wanted to audition.
- 22:31Speaker 2: So now we're like what does that mean?
- 22:32Speaker 6: Oh, send the tape like what like, yo, Like we went,
- 22:36Speaker 6: is he gonna buck out to Yeah?
- 22:37Speaker 2: We went and my man.
- 22:40Speaker 6: Had a barbershop, were in a barbershop, like we're filming,
- 22:44Speaker 6: we're filming him doing the parts. So we sent the
- 22:48Speaker 6: tape and obviously he didn't get the part, you know,
- 22:50Speaker 6: but that's what was like, it was like, Yo, we're
- 22:53Speaker 6: gonna do things that we're supposed to do to get big.
- 22:57Speaker 6: That was really the thought process more than anything, like
- 22:59Speaker 6: any thing that's like authentic and natural, and you ain't
- 23:03Speaker 6: really looking crazy and compromising yourself, Like why not let.
- 23:07Speaker 3: Me let me ask you us because I want to
- 23:08Speaker 3: talk about the label. Shout out to Young Droe. That's
- 23:11Speaker 3: one of my favorite songs of Shoulder Lean. Remember I
- 23:14Speaker 3: was I cookedout?
- 23:15Speaker 7: That was big tune.
- 23:16Speaker 4: That was big.
- 23:17Speaker 7: So you guys, it seemed like you had a lot
- 23:20Speaker 7: of artists.
- 23:21Speaker 3: I don't know if it was official situations or so, Bob,
- 23:27Speaker 3: how did like because people don't bo.
- 23:29Speaker 4: B number one singles back.
- 23:32Speaker 2: Has a lot of like six million souls. Yeah, I understand,
- 23:39Speaker 2: Bob has like a lot.
- 23:40Speaker 4: Of records, Sol super talented, a lot of records, Sol Man.
- 23:43Speaker 7: For so what what what's he on? He's on the label?
- 23:46Speaker 7: He was on the label.
- 23:47Speaker 2: He was on the label.
- 23:48Speaker 3: So all right, how did so? At this point, it's like,
- 23:53Speaker 3: I guess the first group of people is t I
- 23:55Speaker 3: s friends from his neighborhood, young troll from neighborhoods Right,
- 24:01Speaker 3: but now you actually all right, now you actually start
- 24:03Speaker 3: to have to like are you are you like an
- 24:05Speaker 3: A and R at the like are you actually finding talent?
- 24:08Speaker 4: Like?
- 24:08Speaker 7: I mean, how'd you find Bob, like, how did that
- 24:10Speaker 7: come about?
- 24:11Speaker 6: So I'll say this right, I was definitely an R
- 24:14Speaker 6: I in R all of those albums in the beginning,
- 24:17Speaker 6: you know. But more than just that, I believed in
- 24:20Speaker 6: building like a real company and a real team.
- 24:23Speaker 2: You know.
- 24:23Speaker 6: So as soon as we went and we got a
- 24:26Speaker 6: deal with with Atlantic Records to do the joint benure deal,
- 24:31Speaker 6: we got overhead budget. So now I was able to say, Okay, cool,
- 24:34Speaker 6: Now it's some people that that we've hit the table.
- 24:38Speaker 4: So so now.
- 24:41Speaker 6: That that that that I've been rocking with that I respect.
- 24:45Speaker 6: When I like the way that they're hustling, I've already
- 24:47Speaker 6: identified these people like, Yo, when I get right, I'm
- 24:50Speaker 6: gonna go back and I'm gonna get my man.
- 24:51Speaker 2: Clay Evans, you know, because Clay, that's my guy.
- 24:54Speaker 6: We met each other a patchwork like he was promoting parties,
- 24:58Speaker 6: you know what I'm saying. Like, and he he knew
- 25:00Speaker 6: how to move around, you know, I'm new into the
- 25:02Speaker 6: town like this somebody I met.
- 25:05Speaker 2: I met him early, you know.
- 25:08Speaker 6: And then there was another person, Hannah King, you know,
- 25:11Speaker 6: a young lady, my homegirl. She we met her in
- 25:15Speaker 6: school and I'm not in school.
- 25:17Speaker 2: In Lenox Mall. Rather, we met Lenox Mall.
- 25:20Speaker 6: And she started managing the Sharkquar sharkwa used to be
- 25:23Speaker 6: on fire out here on Friday. Yeah, Shark used to
- 25:27Speaker 6: be crazy. So like I'm seeing like the parties and
- 25:30Speaker 6: ship like that she's doing. So like I'm like, okay,
- 25:33Speaker 6: I'm gonna go get her. Like these two people, I
- 25:36Speaker 6: really don't know. There's so many people in Atlanta, right,
- 25:38Speaker 6: you know what I'm saying. But these two people that
- 25:40Speaker 6: I met that I'm building with that I like the
- 25:42Speaker 6: way that they moved, you know. So we did a
- 25:45Speaker 6: deal and I went I did that, you know. And
- 25:47Speaker 6: then Tip he had, of course his friends that came
- 25:50Speaker 6: with him, Doug Peterson. Shout out to Doug. Doug was
- 25:54Speaker 6: one that was was also like all right, cool, I
- 25:57Speaker 6: want to do on the business side. He wasn't trying
- 25:59Speaker 6: to rap, you know, so for real, like that was
- 26:03Speaker 6: like I was our executive team. So to say, you know,
- 26:06Speaker 6: Clay created this off of the off of the movie,
- 26:10Speaker 6: created this open mic called Hustle and Flow on Bank
- 26:14Speaker 6: Headed Club Crucial, and that's how we found Bob.
- 26:17Speaker 2: He used to come to the performance.
- 26:19Speaker 7: So when you first heard Bob Bob, Bob, What is it?
- 26:23Speaker 7: Which one is it? Is it Bob or Bob?
- 26:25Speaker 2: I mean, it just depends depends on both Bob see him.
- 26:30Speaker 2: You're not gonna say.
- 26:33Speaker 4: My close friends called me Bob.
- 26:36Speaker 3: I kind of felt like he was ahead of his time, definitely,
- 26:38Speaker 3: because now even I feel like Young Thug is you
- 26:41Speaker 3: know kind of it's like it's a whole genre of
- 26:44Speaker 3: raps that's like a mix between rock and roll and
- 26:47Speaker 3: punk rock.
- 26:48Speaker 7: You don't even know where.
- 26:49Speaker 6: Bob was so ahead of his time that it kind
- 26:51Speaker 6: of kind of hurt him for real, you know what
- 26:54Speaker 6: I'm saying, Like being that that he was just he
- 26:57Speaker 6: was like an outcast, no point intended, you know, I'm saying,
- 27:00Speaker 6: he was just like he was just out there like
- 27:02Speaker 6: during that eraror like and and for him, like he
- 27:05Speaker 6: wanted to get love from his community, right like Atlanta,
- 27:10Speaker 6: I go to Magic City, like nobody's checking for me,
- 27:13Speaker 6: you know what I'm saying, Like I left, I just
- 27:14Speaker 6: left doing a touring Asia China, Like so you know,
- 27:17Speaker 6: this is Bob's energy which kind of truly like encouraged
- 27:21Speaker 6: him and motivated him to make records that resonate it
- 27:24Speaker 6: like in those places.
- 27:27Speaker 4: He was like up and coming.
- 27:28Speaker 5: I remember him being on the cover of Double Xales
- 27:30Speaker 5: Freshman and I'm like, yo, all right, just this dude corrap.
- 27:33Speaker 4: But then it was like they were playing him on
- 27:35Speaker 4: Z one hundred and it was like, you.
- 27:39Speaker 5: Know what I'm saying, he had had he had Bruno
- 27:41Speaker 5: on his first joint, The Airplanes's record was out of
- 27:43Speaker 5: this World?
- 27:45Speaker 2: Is your first record?
- 27:47Speaker 8: That your first record is Double Plot And he's at
- 27:49Speaker 8: that time like that's his first So what I'm saying
- 27:53Speaker 8: like Bill Bob is the bigger artist on that on
- 27:55Speaker 8: that song, and it's like, all right, well who's that
- 27:57Speaker 8: kid that's singing on the hook type thing?
- 28:01Speaker 3: So, but how is it all right? So you're running
- 28:04Speaker 3: a record label. You have t I, who's like if
- 28:08Speaker 3: this was the Lakers, he'd be Lebron James, right, But
- 28:10Speaker 3: then you got a bunch of other artists that's coming
- 28:12Speaker 3: in the fall Head with his crew PSC. Then you
- 28:14Speaker 3: got young Droe was a bunting star in the streets,
- 28:16Speaker 3: and you got Bob who's alternative kind of.
- 28:20Speaker 7: You know rap.
- 28:21Speaker 3: It's a little different situation, and it's the record label's growing.
- 28:24Speaker 3: So like as a coach of an NBA team. You
- 28:27Speaker 3: got to manage egos, and it's like this one person
- 28:30Speaker 3: he's not getting enough attention and stuff like that.
- 28:32Speaker 7: Is the record? Is it like that for a record label?
- 28:34Speaker 2: Absolutely, he's an artist, you know what I'm saying, He's
- 28:37Speaker 2: a rappers. He's a rappers, right, so you put them
- 28:41Speaker 2: in the room, you know how that go? Like they
- 28:43Speaker 2: want it, you know they want it.
- 28:45Speaker 6: But truly true, indeed is it's about who really wants
- 28:48Speaker 6: it the most, really puts in the most work. It
- 28:50Speaker 6: really goes out of their way, you know, consistently put
- 28:53Speaker 6: in that word for real. That truly kind of shows
- 28:57Speaker 6: you know, you see the difference between the ones that
- 28:58Speaker 6: really go ones that don't go. You know, of course,
- 29:02Speaker 6: a lot of times it's talent, but most of the
- 29:04Speaker 6: time it's work ethic. You know, you're working, You're gonna
- 29:06Speaker 6: get better, you know. So, I mean, obviously Bob, like
- 29:11Speaker 6: you said, he was the first one to kind of
- 29:13Speaker 6: come to come in from the mixed. But you know,
- 29:15Speaker 6: we did DJ Drama's first album, the first two albums
- 29:18Speaker 6: maybe you know, we signed a yeah, who else we
- 29:24Speaker 6: had we had? Uh of course we went to the
- 29:27Speaker 6: Iggy Azelia era.
- 29:28Speaker 4: I was just that my mom. I'm like, yo, y'all
- 29:31Speaker 4: really followed the cruise. Like now I hear the New
- 29:34Speaker 4: York presence.
- 29:34Speaker 5: It's like, yo, the firm had Twazi, right, they got
- 29:37Speaker 5: a female presence, Big had Little Kim and like y'all
- 29:42Speaker 5: got it, y'all went to female route, which I want
- 29:44Speaker 5: a different round.
- 29:45Speaker 6: Interesting before that even too, actually, because we had a
- 29:49Speaker 6: girl group called Ecstasy South the Jennifer and Bowler Man.
- 29:52Speaker 2: We had two girls.
- 29:54Speaker 6: And it's so funny because like when I listened to
- 29:56Speaker 6: like the City Girls and all that stuff. Now, I'm like, man,
- 29:58Speaker 6: these girls was ahead of time because that was like
- 30:02Speaker 6: that was dumb, you know what I'm saying.
- 30:04Speaker 3: Back then, why do you think Iggy Azelia never really?
- 30:08Speaker 3: Because she is talented and she's like a model and
- 30:12Speaker 3: she has a huge follow on social media, but it
- 30:15Speaker 3: just seems like she's just not a big musical artist.
- 30:18Speaker 3: But she has to pretend. It seems it would seem
- 30:20Speaker 3: like she has the potential to be a music music.
- 30:22Speaker 6: I mean, sometimes people got to understand, I think, how
- 30:25Speaker 6: to play their position, you know, because like you said,
- 30:28Speaker 6: like like you mentioned what Little Kim, Fox Boxy, all
- 30:33Speaker 6: those people like they didn't come out they wasn't right
- 30:35Speaker 6: e Rahms and stuff. Right, it was a part of
- 30:37Speaker 6: a team, and it was a part of a movement,
- 30:40Speaker 6: and they played a position and was able to really run.
- 30:43Speaker 2: Through the through the holes, you know what I'm saying.
- 30:45Speaker 6: Like, I mean when you get carried away and think, oh,
- 30:48Speaker 6: you know, like people start working for you and just
- 30:52Speaker 6: like all right, cool and you go. You didn't really
- 30:54Speaker 6: do it all by yourself, So you know, how do
- 30:56Speaker 6: you think you're gonna maintain it by yourself? Yeah, that's
- 31:00Speaker 6: what happens in a lot.
- 31:00Speaker 5: Of those situations. I was, I was surproud of another
- 31:02Speaker 5: Z one hundred record. I'm like, damn tip behind that.
- 31:06Speaker 5: I got behind that. But I mean it was moving.
- 31:08Speaker 5: That fancy record was fancy of this world record was
- 31:12Speaker 5: huge records to exactly exactly got a.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Lot of plaques too. Now, like real.
- 31:19Speaker 3: Travis Scott, this is an interesting conversation. I just learned
- 31:24Speaker 3: some stuff.
- 31:25Speaker 7: How did so? How did that come about? So you
- 31:27Speaker 7: just learned some stuff?
- 31:31Speaker 6: Yeah, man, y'all, look, I'm telling you I'm fresh. Shout,
- 31:35Speaker 6: I haven't been outside.
- 31:39Speaker 4: Let me go back to twenty twelve.
- 31:42Speaker 2: Now, shout out the DJ m O K Man dj
- 31:45Speaker 2: m o K.
- 31:46Speaker 6: This is crazy, right, So Tip, mat Iggy and Travis
- 31:53Speaker 6: on the same night, really same night, you know, and
- 31:57Speaker 6: this was in La. I wasn't there. I wasn't so
- 32:00Speaker 6: comes back to Atlanta. Of course he's like yo E
- 32:04Speaker 6: like tall, white, blonde, foreign chick.
- 32:07Speaker 2: Like he like, Yo, I'm gonna write some mons.
- 32:10Speaker 4: We got something like, you know, like boom.
- 32:14Speaker 6: He's like on it, you know, and and I kind
- 32:17Speaker 6: of I'm in the room. DJ MLK is like, yo, Jay,
- 32:21Speaker 6: you got to see this other kid though he don't
- 32:23Speaker 6: you don't whatever whatever. So I'm like, all right, show
- 32:25Speaker 6: him to me. And he shows me Trap's video and
- 32:29Speaker 6: to me, it was like I got it, Like yo,
- 32:32Speaker 6: it's like baby yay, you know, like artistic the whole
- 32:36Speaker 6: none like sound wise, I get it.
- 32:39Speaker 2: You know.
- 32:40Speaker 6: So literally, like a day or two late, I went
- 32:43Speaker 6: to LA and I met him actually right then I
- 32:46Speaker 6: got on the phone with him, and then I went
- 32:47Speaker 6: to LA like a day or two later, and I
- 32:49Speaker 6: met him and and and then we came back to Atlanta,
- 32:54Speaker 6: you know, And he came to Atlanta and recorded some music,
- 33:00Speaker 6: and literally we went to New York and didn't deal
- 33:02Speaker 6: with LA, you know.
- 33:04Speaker 7: So epic at the time. You say, you like five
- 33:07Speaker 7: hundred YouTube followers.
- 33:09Speaker 2: And it was early, it was early, it was yeah,
- 33:13Speaker 2: it was.
- 33:14Speaker 3: So you all right, so you you signed, you signed
- 33:16Speaker 3: a record deal with him, you said, with LA.
- 33:21Speaker 7: Partnership Partnership hus grand Us.
- 33:25Speaker 3: So he was on Grand Hustle. Yeah, But how come
- 33:27Speaker 3: nobody ever knew he was on Grand Yo?
- 33:30Speaker 6: Because Grand Hustle is smart.
- 33:35Speaker 2: Let's start there.
- 33:36Speaker 6: I mean, like, so think about this, right, So Travis
- 33:39Speaker 6: Travis Boom does.
- 33:40Speaker 2: The deal, then he meets he meets Kanye.
- 33:45Speaker 6: Kanye sees what we saw right, kidnapped him, Yo, Boom.
- 33:49Speaker 6: They started working and at that point like, yeah, we're
- 33:53Speaker 6: here to support you as much or as little as
- 33:56Speaker 6: you want to see if it's working whatnot. You know
- 33:59Speaker 6: what I'm I'm saying, if it's working, Like why interrupt anything,
- 34:02Speaker 6: you know? But for real, real talk, the best thing
- 34:07Speaker 6: that happened in that scenario for him when it comes
- 34:10Speaker 6: to us, is we took him to La read you
- 34:13Speaker 6: know what I'm saying. And this is where LA gets
- 34:15Speaker 6: all credit in the world. La, Jimmy Iveen. It's made
- 34:18Speaker 6: him like the best executives of my era, you know,
- 34:22Speaker 6: because La he will invest in you and make you
- 34:26Speaker 6: a star if he believes that you're a star. When
- 34:28Speaker 6: you're in a room before everybody else sees you a star.

- 36:33Speaker 1: accused of murdering a Texas. Man of Venezuelan charged with
- 36:38Speaker 1: filming and selling child pornography in Michigan. These are just
- 36:42Speaker 1: some of the heinous migrant criminals caught because of President
- 36:45Speaker 1: Donald J. Trump's leadership. I'm Christy Nohm, the United States
- 36:49Speaker 1: Secretary of Homeland Security. Under President Trump, attempted illegal border
- 36:54Speaker 1: crossings are at the lowest levels ever recorded, and over
- 36:57Speaker 1: one hundred thousand illegal aliens have been arrested. If you
- 37:01Speaker 1: were here illegally, your next you will be fine nearly
- 37:05Speaker 1: one thousand dollars a day. Imprisoned and deported, you will
- 37:09Speaker 1: never return. But if you register using our CBP home
- 37:12Speaker 1: app and leave now, you could be allowed to return legally.
- 37:16Speaker 1: Do what's right.
- 37:18Speaker 8: Leave now.
- 37:19Speaker 1: Under President Trump, America's laws, border and families will be protected.
- 37:24Speaker 6: Sponsored by the United States Department of Homeland Security JAM
- 37:26Speaker 6: or any other label and investing like that.
- 37:29Speaker 2: You know. So that's the dope part about that story.
- 37:32Speaker 2: For realers like Yah, Lab.
- 37:35Speaker 4: Yeah, y'all always kept a good relationship even after y'all left.
- 37:38Speaker 6: La Yeah, Yo, La is the best man like LA
- 37:42Speaker 6: from the standpoint of when we left, you know, it
- 37:48Speaker 6: wasn't like no brudgets, you know what I'm saying. Like
- 37:50Speaker 6: more than anything, it was like, oh shit, damn solute,
- 37:54Speaker 6: I was right.
- 37:55Speaker 2: I didn't see it. Let's do business.
- 37:58Speaker 4: Let's dope. Let's dope.
- 38:00Speaker 3: So so Travis Scott signed to Grand Hustle and then
- 38:04Speaker 3: right away just decides to do his own thing. But
- 38:07Speaker 3: he's already signed, so it's like he's still on the team.
- 38:10Speaker 3: It's like if you don't show up the practice, you're
- 38:12Speaker 3: still on the team. That's like kind of like.
- 38:15Speaker 2: The list to the first album. You see Tip on
- 38:17Speaker 2: the first album, like moderating the first album.
- 38:19Speaker 7: I don't think I heard that.
- 38:20Speaker 5: I don't think I heard the I think people who
- 38:22Speaker 5: started catching when after the Rodeo the Rodeo album, it
- 38:26Speaker 5: started that traction started growing and he became I don't
- 38:34Speaker 5: want to say that part, but that's when I was like, Yo,
- 38:35Speaker 5: who is this kid? And then obviously we knew Kanye,
- 38:38Speaker 5: and I'm like, yo, this kid like is around Kanye
- 38:42Speaker 5: a lot. And then I'm starting to listen Toy's music.
- 38:44Speaker 5: I'm like, wait, they're starting to sound like this kid
- 38:46Speaker 5: a lot. And then the trajectory is just obviously out
- 38:49Speaker 5: of this world.
- 38:50Speaker 7: And then I started So that last album was the
- 38:52Speaker 7: Grand Hustle album.
- 38:53Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, this.
- 38:56Speaker 3: Classic album, classic modern classic, classic album.
- 39:00Speaker 7: Yeah, you guys still have a relationship with him.
- 39:02Speaker 2: Now speaking, Travis probably in like a year for real.
- 39:06Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, so you know that.
- 39:08Speaker 5: So he was able to create his own imprint before
- 39:13Speaker 5: or like right after he left the Astro World tour.
- 39:15Speaker 4: Then Cactus Jack Records comes about.
- 39:18Speaker 6: Cactaus Jacks comes about right at in the beginning to
- 39:21Speaker 6: Astro Okay, yeah, so Cactus Jack is a part of
- 39:24Speaker 6: Astro World as well.
- 39:25Speaker 4: Yeah, he went back to New York to get his
- 39:27Speaker 4: first artist.
- 39:28Speaker 7: Yeah, it was his artist, Oh, Shocks Shacks all.
- 39:32Speaker 3: Of his own, yeah, Shack West. So let's talk about
- 39:36Speaker 3: the clothing business. Clothing business, So three hundred million dollars
- 39:39Speaker 3: in sales. Yeah, that's that's what that.
- 39:42Speaker 4: I guess, Yes, a king of oneself?
- 39:48Speaker 2: Yes, so who's twelve years old though?
- 39:51Speaker 7: Yeah, started away? So how did that work?
- 39:55Speaker 3: As far as getting into clothing business, I'm assuming it's
- 39:58Speaker 3: a lot different than the music business.
- 40:00Speaker 7: What is it the same? It's like distribution deals, Like,
- 40:02Speaker 7: how's that work?
- 40:03Speaker 2: It's kind of the same.
- 40:04Speaker 6: It's kind of the same in the sentiment, of course,
- 40:05Speaker 6: it's different the way that the money, you know, what's
- 40:09Speaker 6: down on the end.
- 40:10Speaker 2: A lot more.
- 40:12Speaker 6: Coos and things of that nature, because it's hard goods, right, you.
- 40:15Speaker 2: Know, But same thing, right for us.
- 40:18Speaker 6: We knew once we caught momentum, we knew there certain
- 40:22Speaker 6: areas to go to, you know, we knew the fashion
- 40:24Speaker 6: was one of them. You think, like during this era,
- 40:28Speaker 6: everybody was wearing white teas if you was in the South,
- 40:32Speaker 6: cash money. Everybody wearing white teas right in the South,
- 40:34Speaker 6: you know. So to me it was a no brainer.
- 40:37Speaker 2: And here we go.
- 40:37Speaker 6: We got a good looking dude all of that, So
- 40:40Speaker 6: put some clothes on them, dress people up, you know.
- 40:45Speaker 6: So we started the brand at the time when people
- 40:47Speaker 6: thought that artists brands was dead. Actually that was the
- 40:49Speaker 6: fun part about it. Like people was like, yeah, that
- 40:51Speaker 6: shouldn't work no more. It's played out like the more
- 40:53Speaker 6: artists brands Rocketwar and and you know what I'm saying,
- 40:57Speaker 6: kind of died out for real, you know.
- 41:00Speaker 2: And we went and.
- 41:01Speaker 6: We met with like a lot of people, like people
- 41:03Speaker 6: that was in the business, Russell Simmons and David John
- 41:07Speaker 6: and Seth who is Mark Echo's partner, and Echo and
- 41:12Speaker 6: Complex and all that stuff.
- 41:14Speaker 2: So we met with just a lot of people.
- 41:15Speaker 6: In the business and and just told them like, yo,
- 41:17Speaker 6: this is what we're trying to do, like what's up, like,
- 41:20Speaker 6: you know, and it's kind of like music, Like some
- 41:23Speaker 6: people put offers on the table and then you start
- 41:26Speaker 6: with as you go for meeting the meeting, you're kind
- 41:28Speaker 6: of learning as you in these meetings.
- 41:30Speaker 2: Right, like damn he said this, but he said that.
- 41:33Speaker 2: But you know what I'm saying, So you learn it,
- 41:35Speaker 2: so you learn the game too.
- 41:36Speaker 6: And and we pretty much went a route to get
- 41:40Speaker 6: more direct to like a a distribution company manufacturer as
- 41:45Speaker 6: opposed to signing like through another record label, so to say,
- 41:49Speaker 6: you know what I'm saying. So like we went more
- 41:51Speaker 6: direct and did a deal with a company called the
- 41:53Speaker 6: RP fifty five group and and mantshter con O eight.
- 41:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 41:59Speaker 7: Yeah, so and that's that's still in existence today.
- 42:02Speaker 2: It's still in existence today.
- 42:04Speaker 6: We started a cool in eight and then in nine
- 42:08Speaker 6: I started another brand called Straverg's Row.
- 42:11Speaker 4: I don't want to get into that.
- 42:12Speaker 5: I want to get into that because even strives Row
- 42:14Speaker 5: is important because first of all, the name and why
- 42:18Speaker 5: you chose it.
- 42:19Speaker 4: Obviously the New York roots there.
- 42:20Speaker 5: But I don't think people don't even understand what why
- 42:22Speaker 5: you can get into that, why you chose Travis Row's.
- 42:24Speaker 6: Name, strives Row. You know, it's a block in Harlem.
- 42:28Speaker 6: You know, that is notoriously historical for the roots, specifically
- 42:35Speaker 6: doing a Harlem Renaissance. You know, you had a lot
- 42:37Speaker 6: of like the leaders of the Renaissance that lived on
- 42:40Speaker 6: this block, you know, politicians, writers, Langston Hughes, like all
- 42:45Speaker 6: the type of people who lived on this block, you know.
- 42:47Speaker 6: And prior to them being able to live here, they
- 42:50Speaker 6: didn't want to white people. The owners of these buildings
- 42:53Speaker 6: didn't want to sell the buildings to black people, so
- 42:55Speaker 6: they kind of sat vacant for a while, you know,
- 42:58Speaker 6: and and actually they sold and at that point it
- 43:02Speaker 6: was like, well to do black people in a sense, right,
- 43:05Speaker 6: that was it would afford to buy, and this block.
- 43:08Speaker 2: Was just popping. It was like very influential.
- 43:11Speaker 6: So when you hear the stories, you know about Striver's Row,
- 43:14Speaker 6: if you read the stories and the history, it's kind
- 43:16Speaker 6: of like a different version of Black Wall Street, you
- 43:19Speaker 6: know what. I'm from a creative standpoint more so than
- 43:21Speaker 6: a financial standpoint, you know. So when I heard the story,
- 43:25Speaker 6: when I heard the name, I thought it was dope.
- 43:28Speaker 6: I always did shout out to Dennis Murphy, my man
- 43:31Speaker 6: d He definitely we kind of talked about the name
- 43:35Speaker 6: and I was like, yeah, I'm about the name of
- 43:36Speaker 6: company that you know, and that's how I named it.
- 43:39Speaker 3: Let me ask you a question about licensing, because the
- 43:43Speaker 3: cool you have you have a license something for Muhammad
- 43:45Speaker 3: Ali and Marvel? Yeah, how what was what was the
- 43:48Speaker 3: deal with that? How did that work out?
- 43:50Speaker 2: That wasn't good?
- 43:50Speaker 6: Muhammad Ali went really well, what was it?
- 43:52Speaker 7: Like? His likeness?
- 43:54Speaker 6: I mean really like yeah, his likeness everything, so literally,
- 43:58Speaker 6: you know, we did a whole caps so nan you know,
- 44:03Speaker 6: DNA butterflies, you know what I'm saying, like, and brought
- 44:07Speaker 6: it butterflies on sweatsuits, you know what I mean. Like,
- 44:10Speaker 6: but of course we had T shirts with booms face
- 44:13Speaker 6: on them as well, So we did a combination.
- 44:16Speaker 2: Same thing with Marvel.
- 44:18Speaker 6: We've done something like that as well with the un
- 44:20Speaker 6: brand not not really you and brand was it was
- 44:22Speaker 6: a collab that wasn't a license.
- 44:23Speaker 2: Our two licenses have been those two so far. We're
- 44:26Speaker 2: actually working on something right now that that could be
- 44:29Speaker 2: really dope.
- 44:30Speaker 3: So how does that work for like, because we spoke
- 44:32Speaker 3: about licensing before, but not from that standpoint of like
- 44:34Speaker 3: you actually are the one that's paying the license, like
- 44:38Speaker 3: for entrepreneurs that may be listening, they might not be
- 44:41Speaker 3: aware of how that works, Like can you explain, like,
- 44:43Speaker 3: is it like a set amount that you have to
- 44:44Speaker 3: pay them every time?
- 44:45Speaker 7: Like royalty?
- 44:47Speaker 6: Absolutely, So if I'm the brand and you have a
- 44:50Speaker 6: brand that I want a license, you know, now, typically
- 44:54Speaker 6: how about this I flipped it. If you guys want
- 44:56Speaker 6: to license my brand and now I have a brand,
- 44:59Speaker 6: now typic league for me to give you a license,
- 45:03Speaker 6: the standard is like an eight to twelve.
- 45:05Speaker 2: Percent royalty, you know.
- 45:07Speaker 6: Now on top of that, I may have an advance
- 45:10Speaker 6: that I want against my earnings though, right so now
- 45:12Speaker 6: I may say, hey, like I need fifty thousand, and
- 45:16Speaker 6: then on top of that, I need eight to twelve percent.
- 45:19Speaker 2: Whatever that number is, Like we're gonna grew in twelve whatever.
- 45:22Speaker 6: You know, not to say that somebody else might not say.
- 45:26Speaker 6: Not to say that someone else may not do a
- 45:28Speaker 6: deal for twenty percent, but eight to twelve.
- 45:30Speaker 2: Percent standard, Yeah, exactly. You know. So that's how that
- 45:34Speaker 2: pretty much works.
- 45:35Speaker 6: You so to Mom and Ali, go to the state
- 45:37Speaker 6: who owns the rights, got to deal with them, get
- 45:41Speaker 6: them their royalty, get them they advance, get the work,
- 45:45Speaker 6: and I try to make it make sense.
- 45:46Speaker 5: Is it on total merchandise sol or is it east
- 45:48Speaker 5: piece of merchandise sold royalty?
- 45:51Speaker 6: Yeah, yes, it's literally per whatever you're doing, anything that
- 45:55Speaker 6: has the likeness.
- 45:56Speaker 4: On it, yeah counts. Okay.
- 45:58Speaker 5: So like like record, like album's very similar. Every album
- 46:02Speaker 5: sold they get if you're using this property, you know
- 46:05Speaker 5: what I'm saying, that's just the same thing, right if
- 46:07Speaker 5: you're using my trademark boom.
- 46:09Speaker 3: So what was the difference because Mohammed Ali obviously that's
- 46:11Speaker 3: a family versus Marvel, which is a billion dollar entity. Sure,
- 46:15Speaker 3: I guess it was a lot harder with the Marvel
- 46:17Speaker 3: more like paperwork and lawyers and stuff like that or.
- 46:20Speaker 6: You know what, not really for real. That's the funny
- 46:22Speaker 6: part is you you would think it is. But like
- 46:24Speaker 6: with Marvel, they give out so many.
- 46:26Speaker 4: Licensees something, they do it so much, they.
- 46:29Speaker 2: Do it so much, they like exploited it so much.
- 46:31Speaker 6: Real that that's something that we are Honestly, it is
- 46:34Speaker 6: like it was good to do it, but it wasn't
- 46:37Speaker 6: as profitable because while you got your product in.
- 46:39Speaker 4: Stores, other people got it.
- 46:41Speaker 6: They got it in Walmart and Target.
- 46:44Speaker 2: Marble did you do man? We did? I couldn't speak
- 46:48Speaker 2: on them. I look at the phone.
- 46:50Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying.
- 46:51Speaker 2: But like like we did, we did a lot of them.
- 46:53Speaker 5: Man, they probably just sitting on the other side, like, oh,
- 46:56Speaker 5: that's a character pressed the button, you know what.
- 46:57Speaker 3: I would I wonder if ghost Face had the ever
- 47:00Speaker 3: pay Marvel. They should pay him, They should pay they
- 47:03Speaker 3: should pay him. I wonder if he ever had to
- 47:05Speaker 3: pay him. Interesting old album called iron Man. Tony Starks
- 47:08Speaker 3: was his moniker for years.
- 47:10Speaker 2: But that's interesting though, who should pay who?
- 47:12Speaker 4: They should pay that?
- 47:14Speaker 5: At that time, and I was into comics, like I
- 47:15Speaker 5: had the Marvel cards the series like ninety one ninety
- 47:18Speaker 5: two when used to with the hologram cards.
- 47:20Speaker 4: I collected them. And then they started getting cartoons.
- 47:22Speaker 5: But like when ghost Face started saying that, and it
- 47:25Speaker 5: was like your cartoon characters even like everyone in WU had.
- 47:28Speaker 4: Like an ulteri ego character. I was like, yo, they
- 47:31Speaker 4: made it popular.
- 47:32Speaker 5: They didn't have a Marvel movie then, like the first
- 47:34Speaker 5: Marvel didn't even put out movies til later, Like the
- 47:36Speaker 5: first thing Sony did was partner with them and put
- 47:40Speaker 5: out Spider Man and then like okay, now cartoon movies
- 47:43Speaker 5: can be a thing.
- 47:44Speaker 4: But prior to that, nobody was thinking about it.
- 47:46Speaker 5: I mean, DC had it with with with Batman and Superman,
- 47:48Speaker 5: but Marvel's real quite a little outside.
- 47:51Speaker 2: I was never a collected so I can't speak too much.
- 47:53Speaker 2: But that's interesting.
- 47:54Speaker 7: That's interesting because it's like I could see it from
- 47:56Speaker 7: both sides.
- 47:57Speaker 2: Yeah exactly.
- 47:57Speaker 7: I mean you kind of you took, you took the thing, you.
- 48:00Speaker 2: Made your whole thing on.
- 48:03Speaker 6: If you was the person who made the originator and
- 48:06Speaker 6: the person that took your joint ran would it and
- 48:08Speaker 6: made a life of his own, come say yo, you should.
- 48:09Speaker 4: Pay me, pay me though it was dead in the water,
- 48:14Speaker 4: but before that was you.
- 48:15Speaker 7: That's a fact, buddy, did help the brand promotions.
- 48:20Speaker 4: We see how many times have we seen that in
- 48:22Speaker 4: hip culture?
- 48:23Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, we definitely know that.
- 48:24Speaker 7: That's interesting. That's interesting.
- 48:26Speaker 3: So okay, so all right, so now doubling back on
- 48:31Speaker 3: the music thing. Meek Mill one of the greatest rappers
- 48:36Speaker 3: of this generation. He was also signed to you guys.
- 48:38Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, Meek Yeah, Tip, Charlie Max. Shout out to.
- 48:41Speaker 4: Charlie Max, Philly's own.
- 48:44Speaker 6: That's kind of like how how Meet connected with Tip
- 48:48Speaker 6: and literally meat was dope like sort of raw energy
- 48:52Speaker 6: of it. Sort of you know that was meet with
- 48:54Speaker 6: the corn Rolls, all of the clips you see now
- 48:59Speaker 6: looking back like that was it?
- 49:01Speaker 3: So like when you when you first heard me, you knew,
- 49:04Speaker 3: like this is this is something.
- 49:06Speaker 2: Honestly, when when you first heard me, you knew he
- 49:08Speaker 2: was dope.
- 49:08Speaker 6: But even more than that, when we first heard me,
- 49:13Speaker 6: Philly was already rocking with me.
- 49:14Speaker 7: Yeah, he was a he was a celebrity.
- 49:16Speaker 2: Feel it's already a local thing, you know. So it
- 49:19Speaker 2: was like I got my opinion.
- 49:22Speaker 6: Of course I think he's dope, but really, for real,
- 49:24Speaker 6: who cares what your opinion thinks? His backyard loves him
- 49:28Speaker 6: right now. It's only a matter of time before it works,
- 49:30Speaker 6: you know. And to me, that's what I feel like
- 49:32Speaker 6: with artists, Man, you want to get in business with
- 49:35Speaker 6: an artist? I look at an artist is like a
- 49:37Speaker 6: founder of a company, and you want to invest in
- 49:40Speaker 6: someone that's gonna make it with or what else?
- 49:43Speaker 7: Period?
- 49:43Speaker 6: You know what I'm saying, Like, if it's somebody that, yo,
- 49:46Speaker 6: you need me for this, need me for that, it's
- 49:48Speaker 6: a hard investment. But if it's somebody that like trajectory wise,
- 49:51Speaker 6: like you see the energy you see like it's only
- 49:54Speaker 6: a matter of time before he makes it.
- 49:56Speaker 3: So you when you guys just let him go free
- 49:59Speaker 3: and clear when TI no, just nothing, just like out
- 50:03Speaker 3: of good faith, like yo, just let him.
- 50:05Speaker 4: It was done for you. You did it. You return
- 50:06Speaker 4: to feel Yeah, we had a.
- 50:08Speaker 6: Producer to be billionaire shout out the rise b billionaire.
- 50:13Speaker 6: He went over there with with Ross too during that time.
- 50:15Speaker 3: You know you have any regrets about that, Like do
- 50:18Speaker 3: you think maybe you could have still kind of worked
- 50:21Speaker 3: out something with you?
- 50:22Speaker 6: You know what I'm saying, Like, I mean, you know
- 50:25Speaker 6: it's it's you can't really I don't really see it
- 50:27Speaker 6: like that, is what it is what I'm saying.
- 50:29Speaker 2: You can't really like I don't really see it like that.
- 50:31Speaker 4: I mean you know when when you do.
- 50:33Speaker 6: When you make certain moves and you a certain kind
- 50:36Speaker 6: of way, you can always be straight.
- 50:38Speaker 5: You got I mean, looking back on it, I mean
- 50:40Speaker 5: you lost, you lost me, but you had the next
- 50:43Speaker 5: biggest star, probably the biggest.
- 50:45Speaker 4: Star outside of the guy from Canada.
- 50:47Speaker 7: Well well speaking.
- 50:49Speaker 4: Well, we'll get there in a second.
- 50:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 50:51Speaker 3: I mean it's interested too, because I feel like in
- 50:53Speaker 3: the music business. We spoke about this with Chris Gotti
- 50:56Speaker 3: where it's like it's really just based off of your opinion, right,
- 50:58Speaker 3: there's really no set or reason like this person is
- 51:02Speaker 3: going to be a star, this person isn't going to
- 51:04Speaker 3: be a star. It's just kind of like like you said,
- 51:06Speaker 3: you can kind of gauge it off of like the
- 51:08Speaker 3: buzz already. Outside of that as far as like gauging
- 51:12Speaker 3: the quality of music or like the star status, it's
- 51:14Speaker 3: really just your personal opinion and sometimes it works out,
- 51:18Speaker 3: sometimes it doesn't. So Drake, when you when you when
- 51:24Speaker 3: you was introduced to Drake and you could have signed Drake,
- 51:28Speaker 3: what was your what was your what's the rationale?
- 51:32Speaker 6: Shout out to Drake first and fall let's say this.
- 51:37Speaker 6: We was going to Toronto a lot. We was doing
- 51:40Speaker 6: stuff in Toronto and before Drake, Canada was a different world.
- 51:45Speaker 4: That fact was there was.
- 51:50Speaker 2: It was different. It was a lot of love girls
- 51:57Speaker 2: is still like you know, you know, to bring you
- 51:59Speaker 2: ladies like man, it was.
- 52:03Speaker 4: A different thing.
- 52:04Speaker 2: Man, like.
- 52:07Speaker 6: Shout, we loving Toronto, We're up here, you know. And
- 52:13Speaker 6: and it was a few rappers that was buzzing for
- 52:15Speaker 6: real during that time.
- 52:16Speaker 2: It was like belly was buzzing and Drake was, you.
- 52:19Speaker 6: Know, doing this thing. And it was a few rappers,
- 52:22Speaker 6: you know. But of course, yes, Drake was introduced. I
- 52:27Speaker 6: didn't see it, you know, I didn't see it at all,
- 52:30Speaker 6: Like we didn't see it, like you know, for real.
- 52:32Speaker 6: But at the same time, Drake had this manager, man
- 52:35Speaker 6: HaLow back t Slack, that was the name. I don't
- 52:38Speaker 6: know where he at, shout out the hollow back t Slack.
- 52:40Speaker 6: Always wondered what happened to him for real, because Drake
- 52:42Speaker 6: he had this manager and dud essed to like go
- 52:45Speaker 6: hard to kind of be a little bit annoying.
- 52:47Speaker 2: Too, for I'm like, yo, what's up all about you?
- 52:50Speaker 7: You know?
- 52:52Speaker 6: And that's why you know, like, yo, it's it's a
- 52:54Speaker 6: it's a fun line between like persistence to being a
- 52:57Speaker 6: painted ass the fact, you know what i mean.
- 53:00Speaker 2: Way used to teeter that line.
- 53:02Speaker 6: You know that you know, and it's all love, like
- 53:04Speaker 6: shout out to him and like, but it's just real.
- 53:07Speaker 6: Like so for me and my experience, that was another
- 53:09Speaker 6: factor in it.
- 53:10Speaker 4: Too, Like ship about to call me a game, but
- 53:15Speaker 4: you know.
- 53:15Speaker 6: Shout out to Drake, like yo, he went and obviously
- 53:18Speaker 6: I'm sure he everything went perfect for him, you know
- 53:21Speaker 6: what I'm saying.
- 53:22Speaker 2: But you know, when you when you went in it.
- 53:25Speaker 6: Everybody got a story about who they missed out in it,
- 53:28Speaker 6: and you focused on Yo, So I'm gonna miss out
- 53:31Speaker 6: on somebody else's you know what I'm saying, So you
- 53:34Speaker 6: can't think.
- 53:34Speaker 3: And like you said at that time, it's like he
- 53:37Speaker 3: has an afro and he's Jewish and he's doing the
- 53:40Speaker 3: grassy and saying yeah, I told you. Like even I
- 53:45Speaker 3: read j Prince's book and Jay Prince was like he
- 53:48Speaker 3: didn't understand it. Like when his son was like, Yo,
- 53:50Speaker 3: he gonna be big, he was like whatever, But like I.
- 53:54Speaker 6: Guess, And that's that's all credit to Drake, right, Drake
- 53:58Speaker 6: changed like hip hop in that regard, like because real
- 54:02Speaker 6: looking at it, there was nobody.
- 54:04Speaker 2: From Canada that was popping. There was Cardinal Official.
- 54:10Speaker 6: Cars now Fish Toronto Legend, shout out to him, Toronto Legend.
- 54:13Speaker 6: But that was like the biggest rapper that we had
- 54:15Speaker 6: seen to that point, you know. So it was just like, Yo,
- 54:19Speaker 6: Drake had like a butterfly collar.
- 54:21Speaker 2: It was just like you didn't see it.
- 54:23Speaker 4: I don't know, no mustache.
- 54:26Speaker 3: He was young, but he bounced back back through the
- 54:31Speaker 3: country of Canada. Needs to make him like an official
- 54:34Speaker 3: ambassad like no because it's like not only not only
- 54:37Speaker 3: did he change the course of music, the rafters all
- 54:39Speaker 3: of a sudden became nbah, like the whole culture changed.
- 54:43Speaker 2: Everything for Canada.
- 54:45Speaker 6: I think when we look at the plane that they give, you.
- 54:47Speaker 5: Know, that's the hardest plane out the plane when I
- 54:50Speaker 5: tell you right the message at the bombas if you're
- 54:52Speaker 5: reading this, we left.
- 54:54Speaker 4: That's hard. That is a hard message.
- 54:56Speaker 2: Drake is like the president of Canada.
- 54:58Speaker 4: Bro, after you got he is straight.
- 55:00Speaker 5: He got, he became the biggest music star, and then
- 55:03Speaker 5: he got replaced for a second by another guy from Canada,
- 55:06Speaker 5: Justin Bieber.
- 55:07Speaker 4: And it's like, yo, no.
- 55:10Speaker 7: Replaced, never got.
- 55:13Speaker 5: Whatever pop star, pop stars the biggest just to be
- 55:15Speaker 5: back the point was the biggest pop star. Yeah, but
- 55:17Speaker 5: they I mean these guys, I wouldn't use the term
- 55:19Speaker 5: replaced as a pop star.
- 55:21Speaker 2: He got joined.
- 55:24Speaker 4: That wage is important, language important, that's fair. It was
- 55:26Speaker 4: a impoint. He got joined by another Toti. Then they
- 55:29Speaker 4: started getting number one picks coming from Toronto.
- 55:31Speaker 7: I'm just like yo with and then the weekend pop
- 55:33Speaker 7: crazy like.
- 55:35Speaker 2: Drake Tory like he changed Toronto.
- 55:38Speaker 3: Bro like that she used to be like I never
- 55:41Speaker 3: seen I never seen we were in Toronto before before,
- 55:44Speaker 3: like you said, you go to club for five hours,
- 55:47Speaker 3: like you know what I'm saying, Like it was crazy.
- 55:48Speaker 7: I came back and it was like New York. They're
- 55:50Speaker 7: like one.
- 55:52Speaker 3: Hundred and fifty for like crazy, it's crazy to think
- 55:57Speaker 3: about experience, did you know?
- 55:59Speaker 7: Like Vince car todays, Vince shout to Vince Man.
- 56:05Speaker 3: So let's talk about another licensing deal on the music side,
- 56:09Speaker 3: because you guys leave Atlantic and then you I guess
- 56:12Speaker 3: you go to Columbia so for the for the Paperwork album.
- 56:15Speaker 3: So was that was that different? Like it was a
- 56:17Speaker 3: different type of deal. You just signed the licensing, Like,
- 56:20Speaker 3: how did that work?
- 56:21Speaker 2: That was a distribution deal?
- 56:22Speaker 4: Distribution deal?
- 56:22Speaker 6: So that was the distribution deal, whereas Boom like like
- 56:26Speaker 6: you said, it could work in two different ways. You
- 56:28Speaker 6: can turn in the album and they can just distribute
- 56:31Speaker 6: the album through a license, or they could just distribute
- 56:34Speaker 6: the album directly with you and you good for whatever
- 56:38Speaker 6: you agree on, right, one album.
- 56:39Speaker 2: Two albums whatever.
- 56:40Speaker 6: But that's back to you know, one of those splits
- 56:44Speaker 6: that that's just straight ownership.
- 56:46Speaker 7: So you tell you did the first one wasn't a
- 56:50Speaker 7: distribution deal with records? It wasn't no, that was the
- 56:53Speaker 7: JV partnership, but this one was a distribution it. So
- 56:57Speaker 7: what's the difference between the JV partnership and the distribution.
- 57:00Speaker 6: The difference between a JV partnership is really going to
- 57:02Speaker 6: be the splits. Like a JV partnership is typically fifty
- 57:06Speaker 6: to fifty. You know, like I said, you can get
- 57:10Speaker 6: your master's back or you cannot get your master's back,
- 57:12Speaker 6: depending on your deal. Now, when it comes to a
- 57:14Speaker 6: distribution deal, you maintain the ownership of your masters, but
- 57:18Speaker 6: now you're split. May change. You can come in people say, yo,
- 57:21Speaker 6: master p eighty five fifteen split. Most people really ain't
- 57:25Speaker 6: doing that for us, right, most people, Yo, you might
- 57:27Speaker 6: start off okay, distribution eighty five fifteen or eighty twenty,
- 57:31Speaker 6: so to say, right, and now the artist says, but
- 57:33Speaker 6: I need some money for videos.
- 57:35Speaker 2: I need some money for it.
- 57:36Speaker 6: Everything you need money for is like, okay, ten more
- 57:38Speaker 6: for me, ten more for me, ten more for me.
- 57:40Speaker 6: So you can end up being at a sixty forty
- 57:43Speaker 6: and it can still be distribution.
- 57:44Speaker 2: You're gonna have been at a fifty to fifty and
- 57:46Speaker 2: it's still distribution.
- 57:47Speaker 6: So it's like depending on that split will determine the
- 57:52Speaker 6: profit share.
- 57:52Speaker 2: You know, you're still on taming your masters.
- 57:55Speaker 7: So the distribution you ow with your master's right away,
- 57:57Speaker 7: that album own the masters right away.
- 58:00Speaker 4: Exactly after that, do you become the completely independent.
- 58:05Speaker 2: After that? Yeah? After that, No, actually put out a
- 58:07Speaker 2: project through Epic two.
- 58:09Speaker 6: You know, but it was the same kind of way
- 58:10Speaker 6: what La went to Epic Okay, okay, it was that
- 58:13Speaker 6: was actually not that long Aguards.
- 58:14Speaker 7: Yeah, and then you then the All Death distribution absolutely acquisition.
- 58:19Speaker 7: What's so what? What's what's that? What's what's all depth?
- 58:21Speaker 7: So that was Russell Simmons thing, That's your Death.
- 58:23Speaker 2: Yeah. So Russell Simmons started All Death, which is basically a.
- 58:27Speaker 6: Content company right that lives on multiple platforms, predominantly Facebook
- 58:32Speaker 6: and YouTube.
- 58:33Speaker 2: They focused on hip hop and comedy.
- 58:35Speaker 6: So Russell Simmons started his company in like two thousand
- 58:37Speaker 6: and sixteen, I think maybe fifteen, and they they they
- 58:43Speaker 6: raised like seventeen million dollars, you know.
- 58:45Speaker 2: So they created brands. You got for exam, you have art.
- 58:50Speaker 6: And raps, you have you know, different brands that exist
- 58:53Speaker 6: on the platform. So now Russell Simmons and these guys
- 58:59Speaker 6: ran into some com Locations decided to sell it, we
- 59:02Speaker 6: end up buying it. When I say we, I created
- 59:04Speaker 6: a a syndicate, syndicate exactly, man, Tip created syndicate. So
- 59:10Speaker 6: now myself, Tip Baron Davis.
- 59:14Speaker 9: Paul Judge, Paul Judge, Paul Judge is a part of
- 59:17Speaker 9: it as well, Paul Judge, Mucker, Capital, Beta Works, you
- 59:22Speaker 9: know too, VCS and my guys, Sedric Rodgers and Seawan
- 59:25Speaker 9: Newsome all pretty much acquired it, you know.
- 59:29Speaker 6: But for real, like, yeah, that's that right, So we
- 59:33Speaker 6: acquired that in the nineteen open up twenty twenty with it,
- 59:37Speaker 6: and now, of course the pandemic hits, you know, So now,
- 59:40Speaker 6: like you guys know, content has been up throughout the
- 59:43Speaker 6: pandemic initially, so our content was up, our numbers was up,
- 59:47Speaker 6: We reactivated the you know, the platform, you know, the programs,
- 59:52Speaker 6: and things have been going good. Now add dollars are
- 59:54Speaker 6: leveling back up. So now we're actually about to go
- 59:57Speaker 6: out and raise money though, you know, because we want
- 59:59Speaker 6: to do obviously more work.
- 1:00:01Speaker 5: So how do you create a how do they get
- 1:00:04Speaker 5: the ability to put content on the platform?
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: All death?
- 1:00:07Speaker 6: Yeah, man, you can go to all death and I'll
- 1:00:09Speaker 6: say DM right now that's the biggest way we're working
- 1:00:11Speaker 6: on the web app so.
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: That the whole page is not up.
- 1:00:14Speaker 6: But go and DM if you're a creator, if you're
- 1:00:16Speaker 6: a comedian, or you're just a content creator in general,
- 1:00:19Speaker 6: go to All death and shoot a DM.
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: Over So Heavy Sound Labs. That's what you're that's what
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: you're doing. Now what is what is that?
- 1:00:28Speaker 6: So Heavy Sound Labs is a modern day record label,
- 1:00:32Speaker 6: you know. So now for me, I say, I did
- 1:00:35Speaker 6: Grant Also, I started that almost twenty years ago. So
- 1:00:38Speaker 6: now what is a record company so to say, look
- 1:00:42Speaker 6: like today? So in my mind, I feel like it's
- 1:00:45Speaker 6: community because I know that I don't want to just.
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: Have a brand new artist. Me and this brand new
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: artist is just us. That's tough, long road ahead of tail.
- 1:00:58Speaker 6: So to me, I'll front, I'm like, okay, it's really
- 1:01:01Speaker 6: kind of community for real. You know, when I look
- 1:01:03Speaker 6: at Grand Hustle and I look at what we built,
- 1:01:05Speaker 6: we built the community. You look at all of these brands,
- 1:01:08Speaker 6: they really Rockefeller, fod It's like, yo, it was always community, right,
- 1:01:14Speaker 6: but we really didn't have like, we didn't take advantage
- 1:01:17Speaker 6: of the technology. So to say that connect the community
- 1:01:19Speaker 6: for it, you know when I go to the Trap
- 1:01:21Speaker 6: Music Museum, I see people that that I've seen these
- 1:01:25Speaker 6: people for years. You know what I'm saying, Like now
- 1:01:28Speaker 6: they stay there with their kids in line with the traps.
- 1:01:30Speaker 6: I'm like, damn Like so now we're heavy sound labs.
- 1:01:33Speaker 6: I'm saying from the beginning, I want to create an
- 1:01:35Speaker 6: online record label. Now, anyone can go to the website
- 1:01:38Speaker 6: heavysound dot com. You can hit the artists tab and
- 1:01:41Speaker 6: you can apply to be an artist. You know, nowadays
- 1:01:44Speaker 6: we know that artists it ain't about you're on in
- 1:01:46Speaker 6: the streets is hot like the shit comes. You know,
- 1:01:50Speaker 6: you went out the side of the walls, your mother,
- 1:01:51Speaker 6: from your mother, your parents.
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: Making a record. You know what I'm saying. You're doing
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: a little dance move or something.
- 1:01:57Speaker 6: You uploaded it boom, and now it's going so to me,
- 1:02:00Speaker 6: I want every artist, every young creator to know that.
- 1:02:02Speaker 6: Then come to heavysound dot com and upload their music
- 1:02:05Speaker 6: here and we will possibly partner. You know, We've run
- 1:02:09Speaker 6: through a series of questions designed to flow as if
- 1:02:12Speaker 6: we're having a conversation as artists.
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: What's important to them? Lah?
- 1:02:16Speaker 6: Now, if they would it, if we would it? We
- 1:02:18Speaker 6: want board them as an artist, you know, as an artist.
- 1:02:21Speaker 6: We work with artists in three phases, you know, distribution, amplification.
- 1:02:28Speaker 7: And growth.
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: You know. So distribution is an eighty to twenty deal.
- 1:02:33Speaker 6: We come in eighty twenty partners eighty thos to the
- 1:02:36Speaker 6: artists for twenty percent. We provide services for them distribution services,
- 1:02:40Speaker 6: payout services.
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: But we also give them attention.
- 1:02:44Speaker 6: We give them office hours, you know, or access to
- 1:02:48Speaker 6: our team to really kind of learn stuff hands on.
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: We give them access to talks like this.
- 1:02:54Speaker 6: We do talks we're proven industry experts, you know, called
- 1:02:57Speaker 6: heavy talks. So we give them access to those on
- 1:03:00Speaker 6: one conversations. We're going to access to a lot of
- 1:03:03Speaker 6: different resource We have a Slack channel, you know, a
- 1:03:06Speaker 6: Slack group that has about eight hundred of our crew
- 1:03:09Speaker 6: members you know that are in here now having conversations.
- 1:03:12Speaker 7: That the heavy Groop.
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: That's the heavy crew.
- 1:03:15Speaker 6: So you go to the website everysound dot com you
- 1:03:17Speaker 6: can also hit the heavy crew now, you know, because
- 1:03:19Speaker 6: initially what I started seeing is is I pretty much
- 1:03:22Speaker 6: had like an open casting call for artists. I'm turning
- 1:03:25Speaker 6: away a lot of artists, right because a lot of
- 1:03:27Speaker 6: artists are just not ready for us, you know.
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: So now I'm like, damn, how could I convert them?
- 1:03:31Speaker 6: I was an intern before, I was on the Street
- 1:03:34Speaker 6: Team before, So now would say, like, what does today's
- 1:03:37Speaker 6: Street Team program internship program look like? If I'm saying
- 1:03:41Speaker 6: I'm doing a digital record companies, now I create the
- 1:03:43Speaker 6: Heavy Crew. So now if you're a artist that you're
- 1:03:45Speaker 6: too early, you know, go apply over here and we
- 1:03:47Speaker 6: don't have conversations to give you information so you can
- 1:03:50Speaker 6: get your shit together, you.
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: Know what I'm saying.
- 1:03:52Speaker 6: But now even more than that, Now it's managers A
- 1:03:55Speaker 6: and RS motors, you know, like other people that you know,
- 1:03:58Speaker 6: you have interest in the music business, you can come
- 1:04:01Speaker 6: over here. We got this community and we can all
- 1:04:03Speaker 6: to share information and help build each other up.
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: But at the same time, I get to activate my crew,
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: you know. So now I.
- 1:04:10Speaker 6: Got almost fifteen hundred Heavy Crew members and in my mind,
- 1:04:13Speaker 6: I'm thinking back to Street Team, right, like, there's no
- 1:04:16Speaker 6: more hanging up posters, giving out stickers, flyers that don't
- 1:04:20Speaker 6: exist no more.
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: And that was post on social media right comment all
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: of that stuff.
- 1:04:26Speaker 6: So now I get to activate my crew and say yo,
- 1:04:29Speaker 6: on Tuesday at two o'clock. We're gonna we're gonna be
- 1:04:33Speaker 6: advertising all started great, So we're gonna post all started great.
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: We're gonna have hashtag SRT at two.
- 1:04:41Speaker 6: O'clock on Tuesday, and now we got hundreds of people
- 1:04:43Speaker 6: doing it at the same time, thousands of people eventually,
- 1:04:46Speaker 6: Right for a brand new wartis the biggest thing for
- 1:04:49Speaker 6: brand new artist is to get.
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: Somebody else to talk about, you know, so you know, just.
- 1:04:53Speaker 6: Kind of building that crew so it can be like
- 1:04:55Speaker 6: more and I can talk to the audience and in
- 1:04:58Speaker 6: a bunch of ways, not just oh the direct music.
- 1:05:03Speaker 5: That's crazy because in my mind, I'm like, especially in
- 1:05:05Speaker 5: these times, how are you going to amplify the artists?
- 1:05:08Speaker 4: But you just gave it a thousand ways.
- 1:05:10Speaker 5: And one of the things I think is important is
- 1:05:11Speaker 5: that there is no growth anymore in artists. It sounds
- 1:05:15Speaker 5: like this is what this platform is for. Right, Like
- 1:05:17Speaker 5: now it's like, yo, I can make a hot song
- 1:05:18Speaker 5: in my living room, put it out and now I'm hot?
- 1:05:21Speaker 4: But how do I grow?
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:05:22Speaker 6: So like absolutely, how do I actually developed turn this
- 1:05:25Speaker 6: into a business?
- 1:05:26Speaker 4: Right? Right?
- 1:05:27Speaker 6: It's like everybody got access, Now, how do you turn
- 1:05:29Speaker 6: that into a sustainable business? As the side of it,
- 1:05:33Speaker 6: you know. So for us, like I said, I look
- 1:05:35Speaker 6: at it, I bring artists in. We were originally on
- 1:05:38Speaker 6: an eighty twenty spit and now I look at your
- 1:05:40Speaker 6: traction at the right time, evolved to a fifty to
- 1:05:45Speaker 6: fifty deal. I start investing finances in you, and my
- 1:05:48Speaker 6: goal is to partner with a major label, you know.
- 1:05:50Speaker 6: So I want to do the same thing that I've
- 1:05:52Speaker 6: done with Ti with a Travis with a BIB with
- 1:05:55Speaker 6: all of these artists, right, grab them early as an
- 1:05:58Speaker 6: early stage investment, partnering with them, invest in them, show traction, partner.
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: With a major label. So it's a music incubator. Now
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: I want to do that over and over.
- 1:06:09Speaker 7: Do they own their masters?
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: Yes?
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: Okay, so it's like a direct and do you just
- 1:06:15Speaker 3: so it's like a tune corps a CD baby like.
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: You No, it's not like that, right, So you have
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: the toune cores and CD babies.
- 1:06:20Speaker 6: But I'm like a luxury offering for it, you know
- 1:06:22Speaker 6: what I'm saying, Like you go there, that shit is
- 1:06:24Speaker 6: like the bits. It's just like a black hole, you
- 1:06:27Speaker 6: know what I'm saying.
- 1:06:28Speaker 7: Like for them as far as like they publish it,
- 1:06:30Speaker 7: to the to the iTunes.
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: Yeah they own everything.
- 1:06:33Speaker 6: Yeah, they own everything when they go that route. Now
- 1:06:35Speaker 6: when you come to my route, you still own everything.
- 1:06:38Speaker 6: We do a twenty four month deal, so I want
- 1:06:40Speaker 6: to partner with a major label within twenty four months.
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: You know, you own.
- 1:06:43Speaker 6: Your masters, but I got the rights to exploit your masters,
- 1:06:46Speaker 6: meaning that I'm going to be during this time working
- 1:06:48Speaker 6: sinks and trying to get placement of your songs socialized else.
- 1:06:52Speaker 6: So I need the ability to run around and do
- 1:06:55Speaker 6: that as opposed to you know, you're a new artist,
- 1:06:57Speaker 6: so you.
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: Don't have no demands.
- 1:06:59Speaker 6: Nobody is waiting for you, so I don't have time
- 1:07:01Speaker 6: to say, Yo, John Brown, I'm calling you, and John
- 1:07:05Speaker 6: Brown's at work, like you know what I'm saying, and
- 1:07:07Speaker 6: John can't get back to me, Like and by the
- 1:07:09Speaker 6: time he gets back to me after the night shift's
- 1:07:12Speaker 6: over with, he hits me back, and I hit the
- 1:07:13Speaker 6: other person back the next day they're like, are you serious?
- 1:07:16Speaker 6: Like I don't care about you know, Like at that point,
- 1:07:19Speaker 6: it's just the numbers game.
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: Whoever has the sound for the low that's where we
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: want to go right now.
- 1:07:23Speaker 6: So I just really want the rights for the duration
- 1:07:28Speaker 6: to exploit your music.
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: And help building music.
- 1:07:30Speaker 6: But you own your music time because real the masters
- 1:07:33Speaker 6: ain't worth nothing yet, you know what I'm saying, keep
- 1:07:37Speaker 6: you always own it as long as it ain't worth
- 1:07:39Speaker 6: nothing like that doesn't really matter. So people got to
- 1:07:41Speaker 6: really understand, like when they start talking about masters and
- 1:07:44Speaker 6: ownership and people invest the money in you, like a
- 1:07:48Speaker 6: lot of people really don't have a real good education
- 1:07:50Speaker 6: on that.
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: Still, you know.
- 1:07:52Speaker 3: So do you think that record labels are still and
- 1:07:55Speaker 3: because we've heard like Steve Stouts say, like record labels
- 1:07:57Speaker 3: aren't they shouldn't even be around anymore, Like do you
- 1:08:00Speaker 3: feel it's still a place for record labels or how
- 1:08:03Speaker 3: do you feel? Like what's your thoughts about that?
- 1:08:05Speaker 4: Yo?
- 1:08:05Speaker 6: I mean to me, I feel like I feel like
- 1:08:09Speaker 6: you just got to go on the record label the
- 1:08:11Speaker 6: right way, you know. I feel like the bigger, the
- 1:08:13Speaker 6: biggest acts in the world.
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: Are with major record labels.
- 1:08:18Speaker 6: Fact, you know, a major record label provides major resources,
- 1:08:22Speaker 6: provides resources, personnel all around. The global music right now
- 1:08:27Speaker 6: is a global business right with the hip.
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: Hop biggest genre in the world, you know.
- 1:08:31Speaker 6: So to me, like I want to know, like, yo,
- 1:08:33Speaker 6: what's going on in Tokyo, what's going on in London,
- 1:08:36Speaker 6: what's going on in Legos, what's going on over here
- 1:08:38Speaker 6: in Sydney?
- 1:08:39Speaker 7: Like?
- 1:08:39Speaker 6: You know what I'm saying that if they consuming music
- 1:08:41Speaker 6: in Britain, like, it benefits me to have representation.
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: Right. So now we talked about all kinds of different deals.
- 1:08:48Speaker 6: If I tell you, Yo, you could do a deal
- 1:08:50Speaker 6: with these people, you can maintain ownership, they gonna promote you.
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: I don't get it.
- 1:08:58Speaker 6: So, you know, I think it's really just the about
- 1:09:00Speaker 6: what kind of do you do? But most artists really
- 1:09:03Speaker 6: want to be the biggest artist they could be. They
- 1:09:04Speaker 6: want to be Kanye, right. You know what I'm saying,
- 1:09:07Speaker 6: I'm the biggest artists. I got sneakers, I got, I'm
- 1:09:10Speaker 6: selling out shows, I got the hot girl I got.
- 1:09:13Speaker 6: You know what I'm saying, Like most artists want to
- 1:09:15Speaker 6: be Kanye. They don't want to be MASTERP for real.
- 1:09:18Speaker 6: You know what I'm saying, Like master people wouldn't work
- 1:09:20Speaker 6: for real. So most people could say that and sound good,
- 1:09:23Speaker 6: But man, you don't have to. You know, that's that's
- 1:09:26Speaker 6: that's that's a special person.
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:09:29Speaker 6: It's very rare to find that those attributes both in
- 1:09:32Speaker 6: one person you know, So it's.
- 1:09:35Speaker 3: Interesting, Jason, Man, you didn't disappoint Man. I appreciate it.
- 1:09:40Speaker 3: I appreciate it. How can the people contact you? And yeah,
- 1:09:44Speaker 3: all of the adventures that you have going on, anything
- 1:09:46Speaker 3: that you want to telling people.
