- 0:14Hello my beautiful souls. Welcome to the 126 Soul episode
- 0:21of Living Without Fear. I'm Esther Burke, your host from
- 0:26Switzerland, and I'm so happy you're here.
- 0:30If you're new to my podcast, I'm so grateful you found your way
- 0:35to this space where we speak from the heart, where we don't
- 0:40hide, where we shine in our rawness, in our tears, and in
- 0:45our joy. And if you are a returning
- 0:49listener, thank you for walking with me on this path of growth,
- 0:55vulnerability, and truth. Today I want to talk about
- 1:01something very human and very tender.
- 1:05Friendships that no longer fit. This is one of those topics we
- 1:12don't speak about often enough. Romantic relationships.
- 1:18Yes, there are books, songs, movies about breakups.
- 1:24But friendships? Friendships are supposed to last
- 1:29forever, aren't they? At least that's the story we
- 1:34tell ourselves. We feel guilty even thinking
- 1:39about letting go of a friend. And yet sometimes the truth of
- 1:45our heart whispers this connection doesn't feel alive
- 1:51anymore. I've been facing this myself
- 1:56lately. For example, I sometimes invite
- 2:00an old friends to my concerts. Afterwards they go for a drink.
- 2:06And every single time our conversations circle around the
- 2:12same things. His complaints about his job,
- 2:17his latest health worries. The same stories, the same
- 2:23cycle. And as I sit there, I notice
- 2:28something in me. I've changed.
- 2:32I've done so much in the work. I've shifted.
- 2:36I've opened new doors in myself. And yet, when I am with him, it
- 2:43feels like time is standing still.
- 2:48Another moment that made me reflect deeply was when I was
- 2:54invited again to the birthday party of a long time friend.
- 3:01She's someone who has walked with me through many phases of
- 3:06life, and yet when I held that invitation in my hand, I felt
- 3:13resistance. It wasn't because I didn't care
- 3:18about her. It was because I realized I
- 3:22didn't want to sit in a room with lots of people making small
- 3:28talk, pretending everything is light and easy.
- 3:34What I truly longed for was to sit with her one-on-one, to go
- 3:40deep, to have a honest heart to heart conversation.
- 3:46That's what nourishes me. That's what I longed for.
- 3:52And in moments like these, I see clearly who I have become and
- 3:59what I need. But why is it so incredibly
- 4:04difficult to let go of old friendships?
- 4:09One reason, I believe, is loyalty.
- 4:13These people have been part of our story.
- 4:18They've walked with us in early chapters.
- 4:22They've shared their homes, their time, their kindness.
- 4:28We've left together, travelled together, carried one another
- 4:33through storms. And part of us feels indebted to
- 4:39them. How could I possibly leave
- 4:43someone who once gave me so much?
- 4:47Another reason is memory. Memories are powerful.
- 4:53I still see the sun setting on holidays with friends, the
- 4:58tables full of laughter, the warmth of being held in a moment
- 5:05when I needed it. Memories shine brightly and they
- 5:11whisper, Don't let go. You'll lose me if you do.
- 5:17But here's what I'm learning. A memory is not the same as a
- 5:23living connection. A memory belongs to the past.
- 5:29A friendship must live in the present.
- 5:33It must breathe today. It must adapt to who we are now,
- 5:40not only who we were back then. And this is where I've
- 5:46discovered something very important about myself.
- 5:51I long for depth. I don't want to meet a friend
- 5:57and only talk about surface things or repeat the same
- 6:01conversations we've been having for 10 years.
- 6:06I want to feel a life in a friendship.
- 6:10I want to feel seen. I want to share honestly about
- 6:15my fears and my dreams, and I want to hear the same in return.
- 6:22I want to touch the soul of the other and let mine be touched
- 6:28too. Without that depth, I feel
- 6:33disconnected, no matter how much stories lies between us.
- 6:42Maybe you feel the same. Maybe you also sense this
- 6:47longing to no longer settle for what feels safe or familiar, but
- 6:54to step into relationships that are real, that are honest, that
- 7:01stretch us, that help us grow. From my reflections, I want to
- 7:07share some gentle truths that I'm learning.
- 7:11Perhaps they resonate with you, too.
- 7:16Friendships have seasons. Some stay for decades, others
- 7:22only for a short time. Both are gifts.
- 7:26Both shape who we are. Letting go is not the betrayal.
- 7:33It doesn't mean rejecting someone, it means honouring the
- 7:38truth. I'm no longer the same person
- 7:42and I cannot meet you in the same way anymore.
- 7:49Space can be enough. Sometimes you don't need a
- 7:54dramatic goodbye. Sometimes it's simply giving
- 7:59more space, less reaching out. Let's holding on.
- 8:04Life then shows us naturally which connections remain alive.
- 8:12Gratitude softens the goodbye. Instead of guilt, I tried to
- 8:19hold gratitude. Gratitude for the vacations we
- 8:24took, Gratitude for the times I was supported, Gratitude for the
- 8:31laughter, Gratitude even for the lessons hidden in the pain.
- 8:38Gratitude allows me to say goodbye with love, not
- 8:43bitterness. Your needs matter.
- 8:48If you long for depth, for honesty, for authenticity,
- 8:54honour that your needs are not too much.
- 8:59They are your compass, and when you honor them, you attract
- 9:05friendships that truly nourish you.
- 9:10So, my dear listener, I invite you to pause and reflect.
- 9:16Which friendship in your life feel nourishing, alive,
- 9:22supportive? Which ones feel stagnant, heavy,
- 9:27or repetitive? Do you continue some friendships
- 9:33only out of loyalty or guilt? What would happen if you allowed
- 9:39more space, if you stopped reaching out so often?
- 9:46Sometimes life answers for you. A friend doesn't reply, a
- 9:53meeting doesn't happen. Slowly things fade and maybe
- 9:59that is OK. Other times honesty is needed,
- 10:05not with blame, not with anger, but with love.
- 10:11To say thank you for all you have been to me.
- 10:17But I need something different now.
- 10:21Remember, you are allowed to grow, you are allowed to change
- 10:29and as you do not every friendship will come along and
- 10:34that is OK. Letting go over friendship is
- 10:39never easy, but sometimes it is the most loving choice for both.
- 10:47Because when we stop forcing what no longer fits, we make
- 10:53space. And in that space, new
- 10:57friendships can bloom. Friendships that meet us where
- 11:03we are now. Friendships that see us, that
- 11:08challenge us, that lift us. So today, let's walk forward
- 11:16with courage, with kindness, with honesty, and above all,
- 11:22with gratitude for everyone who has been part of our story, no
- 11:29matter how long or short their chapter was.
- 11:36If you feel stuck in a relationship or friendship and
- 11:40don't know how to move forward, I'd love to support you
- 11:45personally in a one-on-one coaching session.
- 11:49You don't have to walk this path alone.
- 11:54Thank you, dear Listener, for spending your precious time with
- 11:58me. You are amazing and you are a
- 12:02gift to everyone who crosses your path.
- 12:06And if no one has told you this today, let me say it again.
- 12:12You are worthy, you deserve to be loved, and you matter.
- 12:18Have an amazing day and I'll talk to you next week.
