- 0:19Speaker 1: All Right, I just got done watching Hellmare. This is
- 0:22Speaker 1: the first feature length film from Arphin Pictures and Victor
- 0:25Speaker 1: Gabriel's This might have been my most anticipated movie of
- 0:29Speaker 1: the year so far, and it lived up to all
- 0:31Speaker 1: my expectations.
- 0:32Speaker 2: I was really excited.
- 0:33Speaker 1: For this one. It was so much fun. So basically,
- 0:36Speaker 1: here we have a suspicious VHS plot device. This might
- 0:40Speaker 1: make you think that it's similar to a movie like
- 0:42Speaker 1: The Ring or All Hallows Eve, but the vibes in
- 0:46Speaker 1: Helmer are less suspicious blank VHS tape as opposed to
- 0:51Speaker 1: a VHS tape with a ton of lore behind it.
- 0:55Speaker 1: It's more about an underground VHS tape that's been circulating
- 1:00Speaker 1: through like the horror community. That is almost mythical. At
- 1:04Speaker 1: this point, people aren't even sure if this thing's real.
- 1:07Speaker 1: I'm just gonna get into the things I really liked
- 1:09Speaker 1: about hell maare. It's legitimately funny, It's a low budget
- 1:13Speaker 1: horror movie, and the comedy works. The music kicks ass.
- 1:17Speaker 1: That's something with the other orifin pictures movies that I've seen,
- 1:21Speaker 1: music's always fucking full of bangers, cast tunes that get
- 1:25Speaker 1: stuck in my head. The one song that plays at
- 1:28Speaker 1: the end net Worth. I think it's by Ffo Chillin'
- 1:31Speaker 1: if I remember, I just remember the name of the song.
- 1:34Speaker 1: I had to find out what that song was and
- 1:36Speaker 1: throw it on my playlist, ben jamming it ever since.
- 1:39Speaker 1: It's fantastic. And speaking of music, it has to be
- 1:42Speaker 1: mentioned that the movie hell Maare has its own theme song.
- 1:45Speaker 1: It's a very traditional sounding like Halloween theme song, and
- 1:49Speaker 1: it deserves to go on everyone's Halloween playlist this year,
- 1:52Speaker 1: the same way that this movie should be played at
- 1:55Speaker 1: every Halloween party.
- 1:56Speaker 2: This is just a.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Fantastic one to have in the background. There is just
- 2:00Speaker 1: an overall really like feel good vibe to this movie,
- 2:04Speaker 1: a very like, funny, lighthearted feel to this movie, while
- 2:07Speaker 1: still remaining true to like the low budget horror expectations
- 2:11Speaker 1: that you would have.
- 2:11Speaker 2: For something like this.
- 2:12Speaker 1: I'm a gonna avoid talking about any spoilers and whatnot.
- 2:16Speaker 1: I really want everyone to go out and see this movie,
- 2:18Speaker 1: so I don't want to do anything that would ruin
- 2:20Speaker 1: that for anyone. But I'll just say I love the ending.
- 2:23Speaker 1: There is a bloopers reel at the end that's going
- 2:26Speaker 1: to warm your heart and it's gonna make you want
- 2:28Speaker 1: to go out there and make a movie with your friends.
- 2:30Speaker 1: You're gonna be calling all your old friends out and saying, listen, motherfucker,
- 2:34Speaker 1: I got a video camera, I got an idea. Let's
- 2:37Speaker 1: make a damn movie. And that's something that I think
- 2:39Speaker 1: you can find in all of these rfin pictures, movies
- 2:42Speaker 1: that really just hook me from the beginning. So if
- 2:45Speaker 1: you can't tell I'm a big fan, I got to
- 2:48Speaker 1: have their first two movies here on VHS. Blood Gorge
- 2:52Speaker 1: is a forty minute slasher. It's a fantastic movie. I
- 2:55Speaker 1: really really like Blood Gorge. You gotta get this cruel
- 2:59Speaker 1: La Crossville Encounter includes one of my favorite characters from
- 3:02Speaker 1: Michigan and the dog Man.
- 3:03Speaker 2: The Michigan dog Man fucking kicks ass.
- 3:06Speaker 1: And if you get these you're gonna know what you're
- 3:08Speaker 1: getting into right away from just the back. I mean,
- 3:11Speaker 1: even if you can't read, like who wants to read
- 3:13Speaker 1: all that fucking shit, Even if you can't read, there's
- 3:15Speaker 1: a picture here.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Of a guy.
- 3:18Speaker 1: He's dead and he has a dildo shoved in his mouth,
- 3:20Speaker 1: and that's how somebody dies in that movie, So you're
- 3:23Speaker 1: not gonna want to miss it. On top of those
- 3:25Speaker 1: VHS tapes. I also have the damn posters, dude, signed
- 3:28Speaker 1: by Victor Gabriel himself, so you're gonna want to go
- 3:31Speaker 1: over to Rfin Pictures follow all the shit they do.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Support these guys. Fucking amazing. Honestly, I just have this
- 3:39Speaker 1: hope that uh, Victor Gabriel is the next one of
- 3:41Speaker 1: those guys that ends up getting to recreate like an
- 3:45Speaker 1: old franchise, like a come to think of it, he
- 3:48Speaker 1: would be perfect for the Evil Dead franchise if somebody
- 3:51Speaker 1: picked him up whoever the fuck owns the Evil Dead
- 3:53Speaker 1: ip at this point, and just have him do it
- 3:55Speaker 1: and have him bring along his cast and crew and everything,
- 3:58Speaker 1: and then they just a lot. You know, he's making
- 4:00Speaker 1: these movies off little to no budget. Throw a big
- 4:04Speaker 1: budget his way, give him a damn Evil Dead movie, dude.
- 4:07Speaker 1: It would be perfect because he would have the right
- 4:09Speaker 1: idea as far as like what people want to see
- 4:11Speaker 1: in an Evil Dead movie and a type of humor
- 4:13Speaker 1: that would work in those movies that would actually like
- 4:16Speaker 1: tie back into the original trilogy that everybody loves.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Most people love.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Let's get into it. The movie focuses around a small
- 4:26Speaker 1: group of friends. One of the friends named Philip Schneider,
- 4:29Speaker 1: and here it's his creepyess dead grandpa's house. Along with
- 4:32Speaker 1: the house he inherits a notorious, underground and possibly cursed
- 4:36Speaker 1: VHS tape. To celebrate, he invites his friends over to
- 4:40Speaker 1: party and check out the movie. Hell Mayre, Belle, Avi,
- 4:43Speaker 1: Donnie Whitley, Linda Kavorkian, and Stanton all watched the movie
- 4:48Speaker 1: about a horse headed killer that will change their lives forever.
- 4:52Speaker 1: And I love the way this movie opens up. So
- 4:54Speaker 1: one of the things that I've seen as far as
- 4:56Speaker 1: like the promotion for this is that it's.
- 4:58Speaker 2: A movie and a movie and a movie, and I.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Just I love that idea. That's always super fun to me.
- 5:04Speaker 1: It kind of allows for some of that fourth wall
- 5:06Speaker 1: breaking that still works. We start off with a super
- 5:09Speaker 1: gnarly kill, and the whole opening really sets the tone
- 5:13Speaker 1: for the movie. I wasn't sure if this was going
- 5:15Speaker 1: to be important or not, but the movie takes place
- 5:17Speaker 1: on April first, so April Fool's Day. I was kind
- 5:19Speaker 1: of thinking, like, maybe this is something that's going to
- 5:22Speaker 1: tie into the story later on. Eventually we do get
- 5:24Speaker 1: into April second, so not really, I guess, but I
- 5:27Speaker 1: did like that for you know, I thought that was
- 5:29Speaker 1: a fun If you're gonna pick a date something like
- 5:32Speaker 1: that that's significant, it at least like stands out and
- 5:34Speaker 1: it's like, Okay, it's not just some random day of
- 5:36Speaker 1: the year. The other thing with the beginning that I
- 5:38Speaker 1: really liked is we see this group of friends start
- 5:41Speaker 1: to connect with each other about getting together to watch
- 5:44Speaker 1: this VHS tape. And there's a lot of great dialogue here.
- 5:47Speaker 1: It's April as hell outside. One of my favorite lines.
- 5:49Speaker 1: We see a lot of cool stores. These guys they
- 5:51Speaker 1: always work at, like kick ass old video stores. Of
- 5:54Speaker 1: course this takes place in the nineties. Cell video stores
- 5:57Speaker 1: are still fucking banging. There's a kick ass costumes store
- 6:00Speaker 1: that works at called crypt Keeper Costumes. And here we
- 6:03Speaker 1: see a little Blood Gorge Easter egg. There's one of
- 6:06Speaker 1: the costumes from Blood Gorge is sitting on the counter,
- 6:09Speaker 1: and I thought that was fantastic. One of those things
- 6:11Speaker 1: that's really gonna pay off later on in the grand
- 6:15Speaker 1: scheme of things. Throughout all the RFN picture releases, I
- 6:18Speaker 1: think stuff like that'll be really fun to go back
- 6:20Speaker 1: and look forward. One of the other characters we see, Linda,
- 6:23Speaker 1: she is Avi's girlfriend. We see her room and it's
- 6:27Speaker 1: just really cool too. That's one thing that I just
- 6:29Speaker 1: really like a lot about this movie. All the set
- 6:31Speaker 1: pieces are really great. Her room it kind of looks
- 6:34Speaker 1: like a mix between Devil Shit and the Wizard of Oz.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Pretty pretty great.
- 6:38Speaker 1: A lot of like crosses and shit on the wall
- 6:40Speaker 1: and some other like kind of gothic looking stuff. And
- 6:43Speaker 1: then we get over we see Schneider's grandpa's house. Him
- 6:46Speaker 1: and his friend, they go over there and they check
- 6:48Speaker 1: it out. This shit's clearly haunted. There's fucking pentagrams in
- 6:51Speaker 1: the attic. You hear flies buzzing everywhere. It rules.
- 6:54Speaker 2: It's another just great, great set.
- 6:56Speaker 1: And whenever they're going over the lore of hell Mare,
- 7:00Speaker 1: whenever they're contacting each other and making all these phone calls,
- 7:02Speaker 1: something else that I just have to throw out there.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Super excited to see that Neo Pulps was mentioned. One
- 7:08Speaker 1: of the characters tells this guy. He's like, yeah, my
- 7:11Speaker 1: uncle wrote for Neo Pulps magazine. He watched hell Mare
- 7:14Speaker 1: and was never heard from again. And I believe this
- 7:16Speaker 1: guy also plays the horse headed Killer, the one that's
- 7:19Speaker 1: talking about Neo Polps. So just always got to give
- 7:22Speaker 1: that a shout out. I love Neo pulps And the
- 7:24Speaker 1: last little bit of dialogue that I thought was really
- 7:27Speaker 1: fun that they threw in there. I know that Victor
- 7:29Speaker 1: Gabriel is a big conspiracy UFO guy. He's talking with
- 7:34Speaker 1: another character about what he Harrelson's dad and how he
- 7:38Speaker 1: assassinated somebody, and they talk about how like the UFOs
- 7:42Speaker 1: are going to be used as a distraction and stuff
- 7:44Speaker 1: like that or something. I don't know. I'm not like
- 7:47Speaker 1: I can't remember all the damn conspiracy information. It always
- 7:49Speaker 1: just kind of gets jumpled up. But I thought that
- 7:52Speaker 1: was neat a little personal touch thrown into the movie there.
- 7:55Speaker 1: So Philip, along with getting Hellmyer, when he's at the house,
- 7:58Speaker 1: he finds a VHS tap front his dead grandpa that
- 8:01Speaker 1: has his name on it and he throws it in.
- 8:04Speaker 1: His grandpa is played by Lloyd Kaufman, Omaville trou Maville
- 8:09Speaker 1: Ceo Lloyd Kaufman. He does a fucking amazing job and
- 8:14Speaker 1: basically he's just like, hey, grandson, I fucking hate you.
- 8:18Speaker 2: You're a piece of shit. Here's my house.
- 8:21Speaker 1: The only reason you get my house is because I
- 8:23Speaker 1: didn't want your little dickhead dad to get it. It's
- 8:25Speaker 1: fucking fantastic. When they were talking about Schneider's grandpa, I
- 8:29Speaker 1: was kind of hoping that his grandpa was going to
- 8:30Speaker 1: be Rob Schneider.
- 8:32Speaker 2: But it's not. It's actually Lloyd Kaufman.
- 8:34Speaker 1: You know, Rob Schneider might have been my first choice,
- 8:36Speaker 1: but he's probably out there doing some really funny jokes
- 8:39Speaker 1: right now. But Lloyd Kaufman great line delivery. His parts
- 8:43Speaker 1: are one of the things that are just genuinely funny
- 8:47Speaker 1: and work really well as far as like the humor goes.
- 8:49Speaker 2: In this movie.
- 8:50Speaker 1: One of the characters in the movie, I can't remember
- 8:52Speaker 1: his name, it might be Kvorkian. His line delivery the
- 8:55Speaker 1: whole time, it almost sounds like he's acting like he's
- 8:57Speaker 1: in an anime, and it just kicks ass. It's he's
- 9:00Speaker 1: the only guy doing it. He's the guy with the
- 9:03Speaker 1: tied I headband and the dark shades. It's fantastic. There's
- 9:06Speaker 1: another little bit later on where they need like a
- 9:09Speaker 1: cloth to wrap around somebody and they're like, you know,
- 9:12Speaker 1: use your headband, and he pulls out an identical tied
- 9:15Speaker 1: I headband and it's just one of those things. It's like,
- 9:17Speaker 1: the details in this movie are what really sold it
- 9:20Speaker 1: for me. Another thing that just really just really did
- 9:23Speaker 1: it for me, really bricked me up. If I'm not
- 9:25Speaker 1: gonna I'm not gonna lie. I was about fully torqued
- 9:27Speaker 1: by the time this movie was over. After they watched
- 9:30Speaker 1: this tape, we get a kick ass slow mo party
- 9:32Speaker 1: scene where they're just drinking beers and smoking weed and
- 9:36Speaker 1: it's an idyllic party montage. It's how you imagine all
- 9:39Speaker 1: of your parties are when you're drunk. The slow mo
- 9:42Speaker 1: party scene, it's just part of the vibe. It almost
- 9:44Speaker 1: feels like a signature move. At this point, they do
- 9:47Speaker 1: one in blood Gorge. I can't remember if they do
- 9:49Speaker 1: one in Cruel or not, but it's just a lot
- 9:52Speaker 1: of fun. It kind of like re emphasizes that this
- 9:55Speaker 1: is a fun movie. Although this is a horror movie
- 9:57Speaker 1: where people are gonna get brutally murdered, it's a lot
- 10:00Speaker 1: fun and they clearly had a lot of fun making it.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Being that it is a low budget movie, of course,
- 10:04Speaker 1: there's going to be a lot of like campy, funny acting.
- 10:08Speaker 1: But I will say that there are some really great
- 10:10Speaker 1: performance in this movie as far as that goes, Like
- 10:13Speaker 1: as far as what you're going to expect from a
- 10:16Speaker 1: fairly low budget movie, I don't know what the budget
- 10:18Speaker 1: was for this movie exactly, but I mean, you got
- 10:21Speaker 1: Woyd Kaufin in there. I imagine he doesn't work for free, right,
- 10:24Speaker 1: A motherfucker wants to make some damn money. But I
- 10:27Speaker 1: thought Auviy is a good actor. I thought he did
- 10:29Speaker 1: a really great job. Yeah. Overall, I just thought I
- 10:32Speaker 1: thought the acting flowed really well. Whether it was like
- 10:34Speaker 1: campy or serious, I thought they did a good job
- 10:36Speaker 1: with it. A perfect blend, if you will. It's like
- 10:39Speaker 1: an everything bagel of a movie, if you know what
- 10:42Speaker 1: I'm saying. So when they finally get to watching Hellmaer,
- 10:46Speaker 1: we get one of my favorite things about this There
- 10:49Speaker 1: there are three Grindhouse trailers before the movie actually starts playing,
- 10:54Speaker 1: and so we get Witchcraft Cop, which is basically about
- 10:57Speaker 1: a black magic evil cop who's known as Witchcraft Cop
- 11:01Speaker 1: and he uses his glasses to kill bad guys or
- 11:04Speaker 1: he like makes the bad guys kill themselves and shit
- 11:06Speaker 1: like that. There's the Vampire's Lament, which is kind of
- 11:09Speaker 1: like a traditional black and white vampire movie, which looks fantastic.
- 11:13Speaker 1: The third movie, Death is essentially a street trash spin off.
- 11:17Speaker 1: It's the Department of Eradicating and Annihilating the Homeless. So yeah,
- 11:21Speaker 1: death is an acronym. That's what it stands for. It's
- 11:24Speaker 1: fantastic and something that I really enjoyed about these grindhouse trailers.
- 11:28Speaker 1: They would be fun enough on their own, Like if
- 11:30Speaker 1: this was like kind of like how the Grindhouse movies
- 11:33Speaker 1: with Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino and shit like that,
- 11:36Speaker 1: Like how those also have funny trailers in them and
- 11:39Speaker 1: stuff like that that are interesting, And obviously some of
- 11:41Speaker 1: those came to fruition and may became fully length feature
- 11:44Speaker 1: films later on in the future. I like that these
- 11:47Speaker 1: play a part in the.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Movie later on.
- 11:49Speaker 1: I'm not gonna get into that too much because I'll
- 11:51Speaker 1: be spoiling shit and I don't want to do that.
- 11:53Speaker 1: I don't want to spoil anything. But they play a
- 11:55Speaker 1: part in the movie later on, which is fantastic. So
- 11:57Speaker 1: that's kind of where I'm going to stop talking about
- 12:00Speaker 1: what happens in the movie. I will say that like
- 12:03Speaker 1: that is basically the build up to what ends up
- 12:06Speaker 1: becoming the rest of hell Man that's kind of like,
- 12:08Speaker 1: you know, a quick intro into how we're getting into
- 12:11Speaker 1: this crazy fucking situation that these people find themselves in.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Soly cow guys.
- 12:16Speaker 1: When I was editing, I realized I didn't even get
- 12:18Speaker 1: a chance to give the proper props to the prop team,
- 12:22Speaker 1: the effects, the special effects, the gore.
- 12:24Speaker 2: In this movie.
- 12:25Speaker 1: We get a great weed whacker kill, awesome drill kill,
- 12:29Speaker 1: several crowbar kills that are very nice. There's some gnarly
- 12:34Speaker 1: melted flesh awesome vampire monster movie makeup which I did
- 12:38Speaker 1: kind of mention, but I didn'ty I wasn't this animated
- 12:41Speaker 1: about it back then. Now I'm very animated about it,
- 12:44Speaker 1: and I liked it a lot. Guts eyeballs popping out
- 12:47Speaker 1: MELTI bubbly flesh, goopy doopy skeletons, horseshoe torture scenes, and
- 12:52Speaker 1: more black and white vampire ship. So that's all I have.
- 12:55Speaker 1: That's my shout out to the prop team, the effects department.
- 12:58Speaker 1: I didn't want to make this video and forget something
- 13:01Speaker 1: as important at that as that, because it really does
- 13:05Speaker 1: add the cherry on to the top of this killer production.
- 13:08Speaker 2: That's it.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Some of the references or influences that stood out to
- 13:12Speaker 1: me were like The Evil Dead. I feel like there's
- 13:15Speaker 1: a pretty sweet homage to the Evil Dead, the Texas
- 13:18Speaker 1: Chainsaw Massacre. Like I said, the Black and White Vampire
- 13:23Speaker 1: flick too. I feel like some of that almost like
- 13:26Speaker 1: Plan nine looking type of monster movie effects, which are
- 13:30Speaker 1: really great street trash obviously, maybe Maniac copp or even
- 13:35Speaker 1: maybe like some of the like eighties New York like
- 13:39Speaker 1: crime style of horror movies like Miss forty five, you know,
- 13:42Speaker 1: maybe not specifically that movie, but something like stylistically like
- 13:49Speaker 1: that was some of the Black Magic Cop the Witchcraft
- 13:52Speaker 1: Cop stuff. I feel like it just kind of had
- 13:54Speaker 1: that vibe to it where it's like you have this
- 13:56Speaker 1: horror stuff with these robbers and whatnot, and then the
- 14:00Speaker 1: thing that I think took all of those elements and
- 14:03Speaker 1: wrapped it up in a nice blanket. I always kind
- 14:05Speaker 1: of look for this in movies, especially like horror movies.
- 14:08Speaker 1: It felt like you took all of those other references
- 14:11Speaker 1: and wrap them up in an are You Afraid of
- 14:13Speaker 1: the Dark story, which to me, that's like always going
- 14:16Speaker 1: to be a hit if you like are You Afraid
- 14:18Speaker 1: of the Dark and some of the Kookie shit that
- 14:20Speaker 1: they get into those in those episodes, then you're gonna
- 14:24Speaker 1: love this. It's like an adult Are You Afraid of
- 14:26Speaker 1: the Dark basically, which you know, give Victor Gabriel either
- 14:29Speaker 1: the Evil Dead movies or give them an anthology series
- 14:32Speaker 1: of like an adult version of Are You Afraid of
- 14:34Speaker 1: the Dark where you just take the same characters or
- 14:37Speaker 1: like this, you know, play with the cast or whatever
- 14:40Speaker 1: and throw them in these kookie situations. You know, just
- 14:43Speaker 1: do it. I want to see it. And so that
- 14:45Speaker 1: basically sums up all the things that I did like
- 14:48Speaker 1: about Hellmare. So this is going to be the hard part.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Now I'm going to.
- 14:51Speaker 2: Get into some of the things that I didn't like. Nothing.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Motherfucker's this movie whoops ass And you should watch it
- 14:57Speaker 1: as soon as you can. After you watch it, watch it,
- 15:00Speaker 1: you should buy a copy of it and put it
- 15:01Speaker 1: in your goddamn movie collection, because I know you got
- 15:04Speaker 1: a fucking goddamn movie collection. If you're watching this stupid
- 15:06Speaker 1: fucking show, you probably got a goddamn fucking movie collection.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Of course you do.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Who would watch a show about a guy talking about
- 15:13Speaker 1: movies unless they had a goddamn movie collection at their house?
- 15:19Speaker 1: And then after you buy the fucking T shirt, buy
- 15:21Speaker 1: another fucking T shirt, and give it to some other
- 15:23Speaker 1: asshole that you know. Stay tuned for my next video
- 15:26Speaker 1: where we're going to be doing our annual unboxing. I
- 15:29Speaker 1: gotta go mo the fucking yard.
