- 0:04Speaker 1: and Matt Flynn.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Okay, here we go where the.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Plays get broken down and science gets denied.
- 0:10Speaker 3: I got to come off the bitch.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Hour two of Off the Bench Live from the Mercedes
- 0:14Speaker 1: Benz Baton Rouge Studio starts now.
- 0:22Speaker 4: All right, welcome back in Hour number two O TB
- 0:25Speaker 4: one oh four five ESPN Baton Rouge. And as we said,
- 0:28Speaker 4: it is Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri and Texas A and m
- 0:31Speaker 4: all here today. We just got through talking a little
- 0:34Speaker 4: about Arkansas. Has continue that conversation. Our guy John Neighbors
- 0:38Speaker 4: joins us to do.
- 0:39Speaker 3: So how you doing, sir? Oh? I am rolling? How
- 0:41Speaker 3: about you guys? Yeah? I felt that that felt authentic.
- 0:45Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, come on, and how can you not
- 0:47Speaker 5: be excited about today?
- 0:48Speaker 3: Man?
- 0:48Speaker 5: You got you got Sam Pittman and the Razorbacks and
- 0:51Speaker 5: coming off of that six and sixth season and a
- 0:53Speaker 5: schedule that the devil made himself for him. I mean,
- 0:56Speaker 5: it's it's gonna be great, man, It's gonna be fun.
- 0:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:59Speaker 4: So we were looking at at their depth chart and
- 1:01Speaker 4: just you know, all all the different pieces and all
- 1:03Speaker 4: the new pieces on offense. How long like this off
- 1:06Speaker 4: season have you like just had to study all the
- 1:08Speaker 4: new people that are coming in on this offense, because
- 1:11Speaker 4: like you're on the few teams, like the only quarterback
- 1:13Speaker 4: today is going to be Taylor Green, so that's exciting,
- 1:17Speaker 4: but everybody else is new.
- 1:18Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, by the EA Sports College Football video
- 1:21Speaker 5: game came out, that's the best way I'm gonna learn
- 1:23Speaker 5: these players' names and numbers and everything. Yeah, it's been
- 1:26Speaker 5: it's been interesting because in most cases, if I was
- 1:29Speaker 5: to tell you, hey, you got your offensive coordinator back
- 1:32Speaker 5: who's really good in Bobby Petrino, and you've got Taylor
- 1:34Speaker 5: Green who was fifth and passing last year in the
- 1:37Speaker 5: SEC and he's returning. Those two things alone would be like, man,
- 1:40Speaker 5: that's great. I mean not many teams can say that,
- 1:42Speaker 5: and it's true, it is great, But that's about it.
- 1:45Speaker 5: You know, you have so many new wide receivers, you
- 1:47Speaker 5: got new tight ends, you got new running backs, you
- 1:49Speaker 5: got pretty much a new offensive line. So it's just
- 1:52Speaker 5: really tough to just look at one thing about, oh,
- 1:54Speaker 5: this is why it's going to be better. Tailoring Green
- 1:56Speaker 5: could be great, but are the pieces around him going
- 1:58Speaker 5: to be great or as good as what they were
- 2:00Speaker 5: last year.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Don't really know at this point.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Yeah, So the you brought up Boby Petrino being there,
- 2:06Speaker 2: and I always talk about you're one to two for
- 2:09Speaker 2: a quarterback he goes for his first year starting to say,
- 2:11Speaker 2: there's always a big jump, But same could be said
- 2:14Speaker 2: for an offensive scheme, especially with a really good offensive
- 2:17Speaker 2: minded coach like Patrina. So you're right, there is and
- 2:21Speaker 2: you can bring in a lot of guys in the
- 2:22Speaker 2: transfer portal, and if you have that offensive coordinator stability,
- 2:25Speaker 2: you have a returning quarterback, you can make things happen.
- 2:28Speaker 2: So what are you what have you seen intailing Green
- 2:32Speaker 2: and how do you expect his progression within that Patrino
- 2:36Speaker 2: offense for a second year to go this year?
- 2:38Speaker 5: Well, I looked at the numbers, and I know every
- 2:41Speaker 5: quarterback's different in everything, but under Petrino, quarterbacks that went
- 2:44Speaker 5: from year one to year two under his system have
- 2:47Speaker 5: improved dramatically every single time. We're talking about completion percentage, touchdowns,
- 2:52Speaker 5: everything has improved upon and interceptions and turnovers has decreased.
- 2:56Speaker 5: So historically speaking, you want to see that. But the
- 3:00Speaker 5: one thing that Patrino loves and values over everything as
- 3:03Speaker 5: you guys probably know, is a speed at the wide
- 3:05Speaker 5: receiver position. You know, Cherry's writing, Joe Adams, this is
- 3:08Speaker 5: like the Heydays and my razorback fandom growing up. But
- 3:11Speaker 5: those guys were five eleven six feet all like there
- 3:13Speaker 5: weren't big dudes, but once you got the ball in
- 3:15Speaker 5: their hands, they could make plays because they had speed
- 3:17Speaker 5: and athleticism. And last year Arkansas's wide receivers none of
- 3:20Speaker 5: them were really recruited by Patrino, but you had big,
- 3:23Speaker 5: tall guys, possession guys Andrew Armstrong, Isaac Teslaw and so
- 3:26Speaker 5: now this year they've gotten gone to the speedsters. So
- 3:29Speaker 5: Mega Blake is smel Ceci who's gotten banged up a
- 3:32Speaker 5: little bit.
- 3:33Speaker 3: He's heard.
- 3:33Speaker 5: We'll see what the situation is. But Raylan sharp guys
- 3:36Speaker 5: that are smaller but speed tracks type of athletes. So
- 3:41Speaker 5: you know, Patrino loves that, and I think he's gonna
- 3:43Speaker 5: have a plan for him.
- 3:44Speaker 3: So that's maybe where the hope lies.
- 3:45Speaker 5: But still in the sec you gotta have some size,
- 3:48Speaker 5: You gotta have some guys to go over the top.
- 3:50Speaker 5: We'll see if Taylor Green and these smaller guys will
- 3:53Speaker 5: be able to build up that Rapport.
- 3:54Speaker 4: And John were talking about before you hopped on, like
- 3:57Speaker 4: the record was the record, but it wasn't like you
- 3:59Speaker 4: didn't have big moments.
- 4:01Speaker 3: I mean the Tennessee win was huge.
- 4:03Speaker 4: I think the bowl game against Texas Tech was huge,
- 4:05Speaker 4: Like to get that and create that momentum to the offseason.
- 4:08Speaker 3: Really, Like there's some games that like the A and
- 4:11Speaker 3: M game.
- 4:11Speaker 4: As it always is, I mean every single time, like that,
- 4:13Speaker 4: one play here, one play there, you win that game.
- 4:15Speaker 3: I mean even in the games that they.
- 4:17Speaker 4: Lost for the most part outside of Old miss I mean,
- 4:19Speaker 4: you're competitive against Texas, you're competitive against Missouri, Like, do
- 4:24Speaker 4: you think they can get over that little hump and
- 4:27Speaker 4: turn six wins into eight wins? Because they've got big wins,
- 4:30Speaker 4: they've got big moments. There's something there. What's it gonna
- 4:34Speaker 4: take to get from six to eight or even nine.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Well, it's those small things.
- 4:38Speaker 5: As you talk about Sam Pittman and his tenure at
- 4:40Speaker 5: Arkansas in one possession games is six and eighteen, six
- 4:44Speaker 5: and eighteen, and you know he's been here for for
- 4:47Speaker 5: a long time, and it just you look at I guess,
- 4:49Speaker 5: of course he could go either way in a lot
- 4:51Speaker 5: of these games, but it's always the games that you
- 4:53Speaker 5: have a lead. And last year Oklahoma stays a great example.
- 4:56Speaker 5: Arkansas was dominating that game in the beginning and that
- 5:00Speaker 5: pick six happened. Every Razorback fan sat there and said, yep,
- 5:03Speaker 5: we know we're losing this game because it happened against
- 5:06Speaker 5: A and M. Many times, it's always just you get
- 5:09Speaker 5: off to a good start, you got it going, and
- 5:11Speaker 5: then something happens, something really detrimental happens and it falls apart,
- 5:15Speaker 5: and that's what you know, makes Razorback fans always on
- 5:18Speaker 5: the edge of their seat where the no weed's safe.
- 5:20Speaker 5: They don't feel comfortable ever. But it's just a matter
- 5:23Speaker 5: of getting those plays to not happen, getting the ball.
- 5:24Speaker 3: To bounce your way a couple of times.
- 5:26Speaker 5: Because even though the Tennessee win last year, which was
- 5:28Speaker 5: the biggest win for sure, Artsas should have beaten Tennessee
- 5:30Speaker 5: by three touchdowns, but they couldn't get The problem was
- 5:34Speaker 5: guys red zone offense. They could not score in the
- 5:36Speaker 5: red zone. So those are things they can work on
- 5:38Speaker 5: make it better, but it's just it's just sometimes you
- 5:42Speaker 5: need those intangibles to go your way.
- 5:43Speaker 2: In these games, those types of games that really frustrate
- 5:48Speaker 2: fan bases. Right, so when you talk about that, but
- 5:51Speaker 2: it always seems like Sam Pipott wins the game, right,
- 5:53Speaker 2: wins a big game. Arkansas is always a heart out.
- 5:56Speaker 2: We can tell you that from experience. Like they're always
- 5:58Speaker 2: a hard out and they always are going to every season,
- 6:01Speaker 2: they're going to win some games they're either not supposed
- 6:03Speaker 2: to I'm not I don't want to say that, but
- 6:04Speaker 2: like they win big games against guys that are that
- 6:07Speaker 2: are rolling. What happens this year? What could happen I
- 6:12Speaker 2: least early on if to make Sam Pittman kind of
- 6:15Speaker 2: start feeling a little pressure.
- 6:17Speaker 5: Well, they, as you guys know, tough schedule. Their first
- 6:20Speaker 5: SEC road game is against ole Miss Week three. It's
- 6:23Speaker 5: a night game. Not to say the Oxford's intimidating, but
- 6:26Speaker 5: you know it's a night game.
- 6:28Speaker 3: That right there.
- 6:29Speaker 5: If you get blown out because ole Miss came to
- 6:31Speaker 5: fab them last year and broke records on you offensively,
- 6:34Speaker 5: if you get just get handed to you in that game,
- 6:38Speaker 5: you got Memphis on the road next is suddenly you're
- 6:41Speaker 5: starting to be like, okay, well this could spiral out quickly,
- 6:44Speaker 5: and that's what's happened. And then you know Notre Dame
- 6:46Speaker 5: is at home. They were in the College Football PLAYFF.
- 6:48Speaker 5: I don't know if you guys knew that last year. So,
- 6:50Speaker 5: but the point is is, like, you have it so
- 6:53Speaker 5: tough in the beginning that the wheels could fall off quick.
- 6:56Speaker 3: And that's why it sounds.
- 6:57Speaker 5: Cliche, But you got to get off to a good
- 6:58Speaker 5: start if you're Arkansas, if you're Sam Pittman, because fans
- 7:00Speaker 5: are already hanging on by a thread. They already don't
- 7:03Speaker 5: believe in them, they already wanted them gone in the second.
- 7:06Speaker 5: In the beginning that you get housed, or you get embarrassed,
- 7:09Speaker 5: or you look like crap, fans are going to jump
- 7:11Speaker 5: off for a quicker fasten in a hurry, and that's
- 7:13Speaker 5: going to really spiral out of control.
- 7:15Speaker 3: Is the Memphis game the most important game of the season?
- 7:17Speaker 4: Oddly enough, it just feels like it.
- 7:20Speaker 5: Honestly, I feel like Ole Miss could be the game
- 7:24Speaker 5: to where it goes from being a great season to
- 7:26Speaker 5: a bad season. But the Memphis game is one of
- 7:28Speaker 5: those that, Hey, if you just want to do the
- 7:30Speaker 5: bare minimum and get bye, you got to have that
- 7:33Speaker 5: because you're not I mean, I'm not going to predict
- 7:35Speaker 5: argans I was going to beat Notre Dame. I mean,
- 7:36Speaker 5: anything can happen, but I'm not going to predict that.
- 7:38Speaker 5: So you're talking about that and then being on the
- 7:41Speaker 5: road at Memphis losing to a team that's not even
- 7:43Speaker 5: a Power four team, you know, in which artists are.
- 7:46Speaker 5: They're playing in Liberty Bowl, which they love playing in
- 7:48Speaker 5: the Liberty Bowl. So and they're very good at it.
- 7:50Speaker 5: So I think they're undefeated in the Liberty Bowl.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Great last year.
- 7:54Speaker 5: Yeah, maybe it's maybe it's Razorback Stadium East, you know,
- 7:57Speaker 5: if you want to call it that, but no, it is.
- 7:59Speaker 5: It's a crucial game and it's one that if you
- 8:01Speaker 5: want to have a good season, you cannot lose Memphis period.
- 8:03Speaker 4: And they beat flow State last year, so I mean
- 8:05Speaker 4: they've done it before. Yeah, I mean a lot of
- 8:07Speaker 4: people beat flar State last year, but Memphis won't be intimidated.
- 8:10Speaker 2: But still Florida State, right and a little way r.
- 8:14Speaker 2: So I'm looking at Vegas. I think Vegas has the
- 8:16Speaker 2: season went told at five and a half? Is that fair?
- 8:18Speaker 3: Like?
- 8:18Speaker 2: Because we're going to go through this and I'm I
- 8:20Speaker 2: can probably find more than that, find more than that.
- 8:23Speaker 2: You just talked about that at the beginning of the
- 8:25Speaker 2: season as an ass kicker.
- 8:26Speaker 5: Yeah, well, I'm loving that you could find that because
- 8:28Speaker 5: I can't. I'm looking at the schedule. I truly I
- 8:32Speaker 5: took at all the position groups and look, Okay, what's better,
- 8:34Speaker 5: what's what's going to be worse, what's unknown, what's uncertain.
- 8:37Speaker 5: But it's just you got so many games on this
- 8:40Speaker 5: schedule and where they're placed at that it makes me
- 8:44Speaker 5: feel like it goes back to the start.
- 8:46Speaker 3: If you start off strong, then it'll be okay.
- 8:48Speaker 5: But if you've dropped the old miss and say, if
- 8:50Speaker 5: you drop to Memphis and Notre Dame, which is all
- 8:52Speaker 5: three very possible, there's no way. I mean, there's just
- 8:55Speaker 5: no way. It's about that first five game stretch. If
- 8:57Speaker 5: you're three and two, which is you know, fine, then okay,
- 9:01Speaker 5: like I could maybe see that, but two wins or less,
- 9:05Speaker 5: it's just going to be dropping. Because I think Auburn's
- 9:07Speaker 5: going to be improved.
- 9:08Speaker 3: I don't know how good they are going to be
- 9:09Speaker 3: improved from a year ago.
- 9:10Speaker 5: Mississippi State not great, but they're still feel like they
- 9:12Speaker 5: should be better than what they were last year. And
- 9:14Speaker 5: you know they Arkansas can't beat A and M for
- 9:16Speaker 5: saving their life.
- 9:17Speaker 3: It can't beat Missouri to save their life. You know.
- 9:20Speaker 5: Luckily Arkansas gets a break and they play at eleven
- 9:22Speaker 5: AM and Baton Rouge, so you know, maybe that'll go
- 9:24Speaker 5: well for them. But it's just really tough for me
- 9:26Speaker 5: to look at that schedule and say six wins, and
- 9:30Speaker 5: if he gets six wins this year, I will be.
- 9:32Speaker 3: Extremely impressed, really impressed.
- 9:34Speaker 4: All right, So it doesn't sound like John has Arkansas
- 9:37Speaker 4: as his sleeper team. It doesn't sound like that's going
- 9:39Speaker 4: to be the pick there. I chose Missouri, okay now,
- 9:42Speaker 4: because I feel like Missouri just continues to win games,
- 9:45Speaker 4: and like ELI drink, which is you know, it's nine
- 9:47Speaker 4: wins here, it's ten wins here. They just continue in
- 9:49Speaker 4: their schedule as favorable as any SEC schedule is going
- 9:53Speaker 4: to be as the Missouri Tigers this year. I like
- 9:55Speaker 4: some of the pieces they brought in at running back
- 9:57Speaker 4: and quarterback, like it might I'm not even saying like
- 10:01Speaker 4: the product itself. I'm just saying what the record's going
- 10:03Speaker 4: to be at the end of the season.
- 10:04Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't, man, I don't know what Missouri did
- 10:06Speaker 5: to get that schedule. Arkansas fans were gonnat that. I'm like, man,
- 10:09Speaker 5: get that you could win nine games whatever they did. Arkansas,
- 10:13Speaker 5: Florida and Oklahoma.
- 10:14Speaker 4: Need to figure it out because those three teams hurt
- 10:17Speaker 4: somebody in the league office.
- 10:18Speaker 5: I'm telling you, man, like it's just they have a
- 10:20Speaker 5: deal with the devil or something like that.
- 10:21Speaker 3: I don't understand it.
- 10:22Speaker 2: But somebody forgot that Missouri's in the SEC.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:25Speaker 2: I still don't believe there.
- 10:26Speaker 5: Yeah, its it still feels weird.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Yeah, and I don't like that figured out that Missouri
- 10:30Speaker 2: is spelled with s's not z's. That's my thing.
- 10:32Speaker 3: Yeah, And you can't wear jerseys and hoodies.
- 10:34Speaker 5: And that's the games man, that's big ten stuff. Come
- 10:36Speaker 5: on now, like you can't be doing that. But but no,
- 10:39Speaker 5: like that's that's the game too. Where you know, Missouri
- 10:42Speaker 5: not make an excuse. You got to play the games
- 10:44Speaker 5: that are in front of you. But you know, people
- 10:46Speaker 5: like Sam Pittman and Arkansas like, jeez, man, that skid try.
- 10:48Speaker 5: I had to play against UMass whatever last year on
- 10:51Speaker 5: the road, it'd be a lot different. But that's not
- 10:53Speaker 5: the game that it gets played. But no, Yeah, I
- 10:55Speaker 5: think Missouri does a good job of scheduling and sometimes
- 10:58Speaker 5: that's what it's about, because at the end of the day,
- 11:00Speaker 5: body's going to look back and be like, yeah, your
- 11:01Speaker 5: team went ten and too. But you know he played
- 11:03Speaker 5: these teams or whatever. It's like, no, you went ten
- 11:05Speaker 5: and too. That's what people care about it. That's all
- 11:06Speaker 5: that matters, all right.
- 11:08Speaker 2: So end of the year, end of the season, who's
- 11:10Speaker 2: playing in the SEC Championship.
- 11:13Speaker 5: I mean, I want to be creative. I want to
- 11:15Speaker 5: be sitting here and be like, ah, man, you know
- 11:16Speaker 5: I could see this team, but it's got me Jordan
- 11:19Speaker 5: and Texas right again, I don't want it to be
- 11:22Speaker 5: I don't want it to have that. I'm really hoping
- 11:23Speaker 5: somebody could step up because there's a lot of uncertainty
- 11:26Speaker 5: with some of these teams and everything. But it's just
- 11:30Speaker 5: hard to go up against those guys.
- 11:31Speaker 2: A lot of uncertnity with with Gunner Stockton as well.
- 11:34Speaker 2: So you you kind of believe in him. He showed
- 11:36Speaker 2: you enough.
- 11:36Speaker 5: Yes, all right, yes exactly, and so but I mean listening,
- 11:40Speaker 5: you guys know this is the SEC LSU could be
- 11:42Speaker 5: that team that steps in. You know, nus Meyer has
- 11:44Speaker 5: an incredible year and they start rolling through it. You know,
- 11:46Speaker 5: you could be a team that just comes out of
- 11:49Speaker 5: nowhere like a Florida you know, just I mean that's
- 11:52Speaker 5: what is always so much fun nowadays, at least about
- 11:54Speaker 5: the SEC is there are some upsets. I mean Alabama
- 11:56Speaker 5: lost it was it Oklhoman and vanderburgyber last year. I mean,
- 11:59Speaker 5: come on, you never know what's gonna happen. But to me,
- 12:02Speaker 5: I feel like it's those teams and it's just going
- 12:05Speaker 5: to continue to be a fomo as an Arkansas fan
- 12:07Speaker 5: just waving at everybody. It's like, all right, man, Atlanta
- 12:09Speaker 5: must be nice that time of year.
- 12:10Speaker 3: You know, she's been before. There's someone on this list
- 12:12Speaker 3: that have you ever been here? And that's what I
- 12:14Speaker 3: always say.
- 12:14Speaker 5: If it pisss me off anybody that ever says Arkansas
- 12:17Speaker 5: you should have just gone to the Big twelve, I'm like,
- 12:18Speaker 5: shut up, okay, because we've been to three SEC title games,
- 12:23Speaker 5: by god, and you know what, Almoss, you've been to
- 12:25Speaker 5: zero and you've been in Lee the entire time, right
- 12:27Speaker 5: and Missisippi State you went to one and it was
- 12:29Speaker 5: only because you broke the tiebregor with Arkansas be cause
- 12:30Speaker 5: Sterner couldn't hold onto the ball against Tennessee in ninety eight,
- 12:33Speaker 5: not that I remember that. So I'm just saying every
- 12:35Speaker 5: Arkansas fan I could reminded daily, So that and the
- 12:38Speaker 5: pop up foul ball, I just want to delete for
- 12:40Speaker 5: my memory.
- 12:40Speaker 3: We're gonna bring up baseball.
- 12:42Speaker 5: Yeah, listen, it's a Razorrec fan. It's a Razorrec fan.
- 12:46Speaker 5: It's our kink man. We love being tortured. We love
- 12:49Speaker 5: this thing. Man, It's just what we're born to do.
- 12:51Speaker 5: But I'm a real quick story about that. I just
- 12:54Speaker 5: want to tell us, for all your LSU fans out
- 12:56Speaker 5: there Arkansas, the game happened, obviously, we would know.
- 12:58Speaker 3: I'm up there in Omaha next day.
- 13:01Speaker 5: Some LSU fans, which you guys are pretty mean sometimes
- 13:04Speaker 5: all I'll admit.
- 13:05Speaker 3: But this Relishue family comes in.
- 13:07Speaker 5: They come up to me and it's a nice guy
- 13:09Speaker 5: and he goes, hey, man, I just want you to know.
- 13:11Speaker 3: It's like, that was a great game.
- 13:13Speaker 5: It sucks you lost to know you want to hear it,
- 13:14Speaker 5: but that was a great game, great baseball game.
- 13:16Speaker 3: I was like, I don't want to hear it from you.
- 13:18Speaker 5: It's like you can say that because you've won titles
- 13:21Speaker 5: in baseball, right was it?
- 13:23Speaker 3: Eight titles?
- 13:24Speaker 5: Is I mean, yeah, I'm like, if you can tell
- 13:25Speaker 5: me what's your least favorite national championship is, then I
- 13:29Speaker 5: don't want to hear you tell me. I'm like, I've
- 13:30Speaker 5: never had that before. And so it's just again, you
- 13:34Speaker 5: guys were great. It's a great game, but you know,
- 13:36Speaker 5: one time, we're going to have something in Arkansas.
- 13:38Speaker 3: I feel yeah all the time.
- 13:40Speaker 4: And John, it was it's crazy ways that that it happens.
- 13:43Speaker 4: For sure, we were talking about that just a plays,
- 13:44Speaker 4: but also like the side of the bracket. Yeah, you know,
- 13:48Speaker 4: just think if Arkansas and LSU or on the opposite
- 13:50Speaker 4: side they're going.
- 13:51Speaker 3: To meet, Oh yeah, they're going to be for they
- 13:52Speaker 3: seed it. Yeah yeah, I mean I'd be all for that.
- 13:55Speaker 5: And but I get it's like, you know, who expected
- 13:57Speaker 5: Texas and Vanderbilt and all those teams to lose was
- 14:00Speaker 5: the way they did.
- 14:00Speaker 3: But you know that I would have loved that.
- 14:02Speaker 5: It was unfortunate that happened, but uh, you know, it
- 14:05Speaker 5: still got to see some cool things like gage Woods
- 14:07Speaker 5: No hitter was really cool to see, you know, like
- 14:09Speaker 5: stuff like that, and it was a great game. But
- 14:12Speaker 5: just one time, man, and seeing Missippi State and Old
- 14:14Speaker 5: miss have titles Tennessee that ain't no baseball exist until
- 14:17Speaker 5: five years ago. And but our next head coach is
- 14:20Speaker 5: going to be Tony Vattello. So I know, I appreciate
- 14:22Speaker 5: them for holding on to it. But just at one
- 14:23Speaker 5: point in time, we're gonna have one.
- 14:24Speaker 3: I feel it.
- 14:25Speaker 5: One lifetime you're gonna get one. I'm surely, because yeah,
- 14:30Speaker 5: it's gonna be. It's gonna be the day after I
- 14:31Speaker 5: die is when it's gonna happen. So I can't wait
- 14:33Speaker 5: for that.
- 14:35Speaker 4: They'll still have one, but you just you know, yeah here,
- 14:38Speaker 4: but just knowing your heart, they'll have one.
- 14:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:39Speaker 5: Yeah, that's I mean, really all that I want, you know,
- 14:41Speaker 5: I don't want to experience it as a person or anything.
- 14:44Speaker 2: They odd say that eventually there you go.
- 14:47Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, but we'll always have big We will always
- 14:49Speaker 5: have big wins and games because you know, razorback fans,
- 14:51Speaker 5: they wanted to hang a banner after you know, beating
- 14:53Speaker 5: certain teams and great so oh seven not to bring
- 14:57Speaker 5: it out, but lu I was our national champion. Yeah
- 15:00Speaker 5: you know we could go one to yeah yeah, apparently
- 15:02Speaker 5: we vers is one that goes a little further than ours.
- 15:04Speaker 5: So yeah, we can't beat Kentucky, can't beat Tennessee. But yeah, yeah,
- 15:09Speaker 5: every single time, man, every single time.
- 15:11Speaker 3: Time. We appreciate the time as always man.
- 15:13Speaker 5: They appreciate you guys as always appreciate you guys.

- 16:39Speaker 4: All right, welcome back in Hour number two OTB one
- 16:42Speaker 4: oh four five ESPN Baton Rouge. And as we said,
- 16:45Speaker 4: it is Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri and Texas A and m
- 16:48Speaker 4: all here today. We just got through talking a little
- 16:51Speaker 4: about Arkansas. Has continue that conversation. Our guy John Neighbors
- 16:55Speaker 4: joins us to do. So, how you doing, sir?
- 16:57Speaker 2: Oh?
- 16:57Speaker 3: I am rolling? How about you? Guys?
- 16:59Speaker 2: Like?
- 16:59Speaker 3: Yeah that I felt that, that felt authentic.
- 17:02Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean that come out and how can you
- 17:03Speaker 5: not be excited about today? Man? You got you got
- 17:06Speaker 5: Sam Pittman and the Razorbacks and coming off of that
- 17:08Speaker 5: six and sixth season and a schedule that the devil
- 17:12Speaker 5: made himself for him. I mean, it's it's gonna be great, man,
- 17:14Speaker 5: it's gonna be fun.
- 17:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:15Speaker 4: So we were looking at at their depth chart and
- 17:18Speaker 4: just you know, all all the different pieces and all
- 17:20Speaker 4: the new.
- 17:20Speaker 3: Pieces on offense.
- 17:22Speaker 4: How long like this off season have you like just
- 17:24Speaker 4: had to study all the new people that are coming
- 17:26Speaker 4: in on this offense because like you're on the few teams,
- 17:29Speaker 4: like the only quarterback today is going to be Taylor Green,
- 17:33Speaker 4: so that's exciting, but everybody else is new.
- 17:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:36Speaker 5: I mean, by the EA Sports College Football video game
- 17:38Speaker 5: came out, that's the best way I'm gonna learn these
- 17:40Speaker 5: players names and numbers and everything. Yeah, it's been It's
- 17:44Speaker 5: been interesting because in most cases, if I was to
- 17:46Speaker 5: tell you, hey, you got your offensive coordinator back who's
- 17:49Speaker 5: really good in Bobby Petrino, and you've got Taylor Green
- 17:51Speaker 5: who was fifth and passing last year in the SEC
- 17:54Speaker 5: and he's returning those two things, a loan would be like, man,
- 17:57Speaker 5: that's great. I mean, how many teams can say that?
- 17:59Speaker 5: And it's true, it is great, But that's about it.
- 18:02Speaker 5: You know, you have so many new wide receivers, you
- 18:04Speaker 5: got new tight ends, you got new running backs, you
- 18:06Speaker 5: got pretty much.
- 18:06Speaker 3: A new offensive line.
- 18:08Speaker 5: So it's just really tough to just look at one
- 18:10Speaker 5: thing about, Oh, this is why it's going to be better.
- 18:12Speaker 5: Tailing Green could be great, but are the pieces around
- 18:15Speaker 5: him going to be great or as good as what
- 18:16Speaker 5: they were last year?
- 18:17Speaker 3: Don't really know at this point.
- 18:19Speaker 2: Yeah, So the you brought up Boby Petrino being there,
- 18:23Speaker 2: and I always talk about you're one to two for
- 18:26Speaker 2: a quarterback he goes for his first year starting to say,
- 18:28Speaker 2: there's always a big jump, But same could be said
- 18:30Speaker 2: for an offensive scheme, especially with a really good offensive
- 18:34Speaker 2: minded coach like Patrina. So you're right, there is and
- 18:37Speaker 2: you can bring in a lot of guys in the
- 18:39Speaker 2: transfer portal, and if you have that offensive coordinator stability,
- 18:42Speaker 2: you have a returning quarterback, you can make things happen.
- 18:45Speaker 2: So what are you what have you seen in Tailing
- 18:49Speaker 2: Green and how do you expect his progression within that
- 18:52Speaker 2: Patrino offense for a second year to go this year?
- 18:55Speaker 5: Well, I looked at the numbers, and I know every
- 18:58Speaker 5: quarterback's different in everything, but under Petrino, quarterbacks that went
- 19:01Speaker 5: from year one to year two under his system have
- 19:04Speaker 5: improved dramatically. Every single time we're talking about completion percentage, touchdowns,
- 19:09Speaker 5: everything has improved upon, and then interceptions and turnovers has decreased,
- 19:13Speaker 5: so historically speaking, you want to see that. But the
- 19:16Speaker 5: one thing that Patrino loves and values over everything, as
- 19:20Speaker 5: you guys probably know, is speed at.
- 19:22Speaker 3: The wide receiver position.
- 19:23Speaker 5: You know, Cherry's writing Joe Adams is like the Heydays
- 19:26Speaker 5: and my razorback fandom growing up. But those guys were
- 19:29Speaker 5: five eleven six feet all like there weren't big dudes,
- 19:31Speaker 5: but once you got the ball in their hands, they
- 19:33Speaker 5: could make plays because they had speed and athleticism. And
- 19:36Speaker 5: last year Arkansas's wide receivers none of them were really
- 19:38Speaker 5: recruited by Patrino, but you had big, tall guys, possession
- 19:41Speaker 5: guys Andrew Armstrong, Isaac Teslaw, and so now this year
- 19:44Speaker 5: they've gotten gone to the speedsters. So Mega Blake is
- 19:48Speaker 5: smel Cci, who's gotten banged up a little bit.
- 19:50Speaker 3: He's herd. We'll see what the situation is.
- 19:52Speaker 5: But Raylan sharp guys that are smaller but speed tracks
- 19:56Speaker 5: type of athletes. So you know, Patrino loves that, and
- 19:59Speaker 5: I think he's gonna have a plan for him. So
- 20:01Speaker 5: that's maybe where the hope lies. But still in the
- 20:04Speaker 5: sec you gotta have some size. You gotta have some
- 20:05Speaker 5: guys to go over the top. We'll see if Taylor
- 20:08Speaker 5: Green and these smaller guys will be able to build
- 20:10Speaker 5: up that rapport and.
- 20:12Speaker 4: John were talking about before you hopped on, Like the
- 20:14Speaker 4: record was the record, but it wasn't like you didn't
- 20:16Speaker 4: have big moments. I mean the Tennessee win was huge.
- 20:20Speaker 4: I think the bowl game against Texas Tech was huge,
- 20:22Speaker 4: Like to get that and create that momentum to the offseason. Really,
- 20:26Speaker 4: Like there's some games that like the A and M
- 20:28Speaker 4: game as it always is, I mean every single time,
- 20:30Speaker 4: like that, one play here, one play there, you win
- 20:32Speaker 4: that game. I mean even in the games that they
- 20:34Speaker 4: lost for the most part outside of Old miss I
- 20:36Speaker 4: mean you're competitive against Texas, You're competitive against Missouri, Like,
- 20:41Speaker 4: do you think they can get over that little hump
- 20:44Speaker 4: and turn six wins into eight wins? Because they've got
- 20:46Speaker 4: big wins, they've got big moments. There's something there. What's
- 20:50Speaker 4: it gonna take to get from six to eight or
- 20:52Speaker 4: even nine?
- 20:53Speaker 3: Well, it's those small things.
- 20:54Speaker 5: As you talk about Sam Pittman and his tenure at
- 20:57Speaker 5: Arkansas in one possession games is sick eighteen six and
- 21:01Speaker 5: eighteen and you know, he's been here for a long time,
- 21:05Speaker 5: and it just you look at I guess, of course
- 21:07Speaker 5: he could go either way in a lot of these games.
- 21:08Speaker 5: But it's always the games that you have a lead.
- 21:11Speaker 5: And last year Oklahoma stays a great example. Arkansas was
- 21:14Speaker 5: dominating that game in the beginning and.
- 21:16Speaker 3: That pick six happened.
- 21:18Speaker 5: Every Razorback fan sat there and said, yep, we know
- 21:21Speaker 5: we're losing this game because it happened against A and M.
- 21:23Speaker 3: Many times.
- 21:24Speaker 5: It's always just you get off to a good start,
- 21:27Speaker 5: you got it going, and then something happens, something really
- 21:30Speaker 5: detrimental happens and it falls apart. And that's what you
- 21:33Speaker 5: know makes Razorback fans always on the edge of their
- 21:35Speaker 5: seat where.
- 21:36Speaker 3: The no weed's safe. They don't feel comfortable ever.
- 21:38Speaker 5: But it's just a matter of getting those plays to
- 21:41Speaker 5: not happen, getting the ball to bounce your way a
- 21:42Speaker 5: couple of times. Because even than the Tennessee win last year,
- 21:44Speaker 5: which was the biggest win for sure, Artsas should have
- 21:47Speaker 5: beaten Tennessee by three touchdowns, but they couldn't get The
- 21:50Speaker 5: problem was guys red zone offense. They could not score
- 21:53Speaker 5: in the red zone. So those are things they can
- 21:55Speaker 5: work on make it better. But it's just it's just
- 21:58Speaker 5: sometimes you need those intangi to go your way in
- 22:00Speaker 5: these games and.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Those types of games that really frustrate fan bases. Right,
- 22:06Speaker 2: so when you talk about that, but it always seems
- 22:08Speaker 2: like samp Pipot wins the game, right, wins a big game.
- 22:11Speaker 2: Arkansas is always a heart out. We can tell you
- 22:13Speaker 2: that from experience. Like they're always a hard out and
- 22:16Speaker 2: they always are going to every season, they're gonna win
- 22:18Speaker 2: some games they're either not supposed to. I'm not I
- 22:20Speaker 2: don't want to say that, but like they win big
- 22:22Speaker 2: games against guys that are that are rolling. What happens
- 22:27Speaker 2: this year? What could happen I least early on if
- 22:30Speaker 2: to make Sam Pitman kind of start feeling.
- 22:33Speaker 3: A little pressure.
- 22:34Speaker 5: Well, they, as you guys know, tough schedule. Their first
- 22:37Speaker 5: SEC road game is against ole Miss Week three.
- 22:40Speaker 3: It's a night game.
- 22:42Speaker 5: Not to say the Oxford's intimidating, but you know it's
- 22:44Speaker 5: a night game that right there. If you get blown
- 22:47Speaker 5: out because ole Miss came to fab them last year
- 22:48Speaker 5: and broke records on you offensively, if you get just
- 22:53Speaker 5: get handed to you in that game, you got Memphis
- 22:55Speaker 5: on the road. Next is suddenly you're starting to be like, okay,
- 22:58Speaker 5: well this could spiral out quickly, and that's what's happened.
- 23:02Speaker 5: And then you know Notre Dame is at home. They
- 23:04Speaker 5: were in the College Football PLAYFF. I don't know if
- 23:06Speaker 5: you guys knew that last year. So, but the point
- 23:08Speaker 5: is is like, you have it so tough in the
- 23:10Speaker 5: beginning that the wheels could fall off quick And that's
- 23:13Speaker 5: why it sounds cliche, But you got to get off
- 23:15Speaker 5: to a good start if your Arkansas and if you're
- 23:16Speaker 5: Sam Pittman, because fans are already hanging on by a thread.
- 23:19Speaker 5: They already don't believe in them, they already wanted them
- 23:21Speaker 5: gone in the second. In the beginning that you get housed,
- 23:25Speaker 5: or you get embarrassed, or you look like crap, fans
- 23:28Speaker 5: are going to jump off four quicker fasten in a hurry,
- 23:30Speaker 5: and that's going to really spiral out of control.
- 23:32Speaker 3: Is the Memphis game the most important game of the season?
- 23:34Speaker 3: Oddly enough, it just feels like it.
- 23:37Speaker 5: Honestly, I feel like Ole Miss could be the game
- 23:41Speaker 5: to where it goes from being a great season to
- 23:43Speaker 5: a bad season. But the Memphis game is one of
- 23:45Speaker 5: those that. Hey, if you just want to do the
- 23:47Speaker 5: bare minimum and get bye, you got to have that
- 23:50Speaker 5: because you're not I mean, I'm not going to predict Argans.
- 23:52Speaker 5: I was going to beat Notre Dame. I mean, anything
- 23:53Speaker 5: can happen, but I'm not going to predict that. So
- 23:56Speaker 5: you're talking about that and then being on the road
- 23:58Speaker 5: at Memphis losing to a t that's even a Power
- 24:00Speaker 5: four team, you know, in which Artis saw. They're playing
- 24:03Speaker 5: in Liberty Bowl, which they love playing in the Liberty Bowl.
- 24:05Speaker 5: So and they're very good at it. So I think
- 24:07Speaker 5: they're undefeated in the Liberty Bowl. Great last year. Yeah,
- 24:11Speaker 5: maybe it's maybe it's Razorback Stadium East, you know, if
- 24:14Speaker 5: you want to call it that, But no, it is.
- 24:16Speaker 3: It's a crucial game and it's one.
- 24:18Speaker 5: That if you want to have a good season, you
- 24:19Speaker 5: cannot lose the Memphis period.
- 24:20Speaker 4: And they beat Flar State last year, so I mean
- 24:22Speaker 4: they've done it before. Yeah, I mean a lot of
- 24:24Speaker 4: people beat Flar State last year, but still Memphis won't
- 24:26Speaker 4: be intimidated.
- 24:27Speaker 2: But it's still Florida State, right and a little way right.
- 24:31Speaker 2: So I'm looking at Vegas. I think Vegas has the
- 24:33Speaker 2: season went told at five and a half. Is that fair, like,
- 24:35Speaker 2: because we're going to go through this and I'm I
- 24:37Speaker 2: can probably find more than that. Find more than that.
- 24:40Speaker 2: You just talked about that at the beginning of the
- 24:42Speaker 2: season as an ass kicker.
- 24:43Speaker 5: Yeah, well, I'm loving that you could find that because
- 24:45Speaker 5: I can't. I'm looking at the schedule. I truly I
- 24:49Speaker 5: took at all the position groups and look, okay, what's better,
- 24:51Speaker 5: what's what's going to be worse, what's unknown, what's uncertain.
- 24:54Speaker 5: But it's just you got so many games on this
- 24:57Speaker 5: schedule and where they're placed at that it makes me
- 25:01Speaker 5: feel like it goes back to the start. If you
- 25:03Speaker 5: start off strong, then it'll be okay. But if you've
- 25:05Speaker 5: dropped the old miss and say, if you drop to
- 25:08Speaker 5: Memphis and Notre Dame, which is all three very possible,
- 25:10Speaker 5: there's no way. I mean, there's just no way. It's
- 25:12Speaker 5: about that first five game stretch. If you're three and two,
- 25:15Speaker 5: which is you know, fine, then okay, like I could
- 25:19Speaker 5: maybe see that, but two wins or less, it's just
- 25:22Speaker 5: going to be dropping. Because I think Auburn's going to
- 25:24Speaker 5: be improved, I don't know how good they are going
- 25:26Speaker 5: to be. Improved from a year ago. Mississippi State not great,
- 25:28Speaker 5: but they're still feel like they should be better than
- 25:30Speaker 5: what they were last year. And you know, they Arkansas
- 25:32Speaker 5: can't beat A and M for saving their life. It
- 25:34Speaker 5: can't beat Missouri to save their life.
- 25:36Speaker 3: You know.
- 25:37Speaker 5: Luckily Arkansas gets a break and they play at eleven
- 25:39Speaker 5: AM and Baton.
- 25:39Speaker 3: Rouge, so you know, maybe that'll go well for them.
- 25:42Speaker 5: But it's just really tough for me to look at
- 25:44Speaker 5: that schedule and say six wins, and if he gets
- 25:48Speaker 5: six wins this year, I will be extremely impressed, really impressed.
- 25:51Speaker 4: All Right, So it doesn't sound like John has Arkansas
- 25:54Speaker 4: as his sleep sleeper team.
- 25:55Speaker 3: It doesn't sound like that's going to be the pick there.
- 25:58Speaker 4: I chose Missouri, okay now, because I feel like Missouri
- 26:01Speaker 4: just continues to win games, and like ELI drink, which
- 26:03Speaker 4: is you know, it's nine wins here, it's ten wins here.
- 26:05Speaker 4: They just continue in their schedule as favorable as any
- 26:09Speaker 4: SEC schedule is going to be. As the Missouri Tigers
- 26:11Speaker 4: this year, I like some of the pieces they brought
- 26:13Speaker 4: in at running back and quarterback, like it might I'm
- 26:17Speaker 4: not even saying like the product itself. I'm just saying
- 26:19Speaker 4: what the record's going to be at the end of
- 26:20Speaker 4: the season.
- 26:21Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't, man, I don't know what Missouri did
- 26:23Speaker 5: to get that schedule. Arkansas fans running at that. I'm like, man,
- 26:26Speaker 5: get that you could win nine games whatever they did. Arkansas,
- 26:30Speaker 5: Florida and Oklahoma.
- 26:31Speaker 4: Need to figure it out because those three teams hurt
- 26:34Speaker 4: somebody in the league office.
- 26:35Speaker 5: I'm telling you, man, like it's just they have a
- 26:37Speaker 5: deal with the devil or something like that. I don't
- 26:38Speaker 5: understand it.
- 26:39Speaker 2: But somebody forgot that Missouri's in the SEC.
- 26:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:42Speaker 2: I still don't believe they're.
- 26:43Speaker 3: Yeah, I still still feels weird.
- 26:45Speaker 2: Yeah, and I don't like it figured out that Missouri
- 26:47Speaker 2: is spelled with s's not z's. That's my thing.
- 26:49Speaker 5: Yeah, And you can't wear jerseys and hoodies and that's
- 26:51Speaker 5: it the games. Man, that's big ten stuff. Come on now,
- 26:54Speaker 5: like you can't be doing that. But but no, like
- 26:56Speaker 5: that's that's the game too. Where you know, Missouri, not
- 26:59Speaker 5: make excuse, you got to play the game that are
- 27:01Speaker 5: in front of you. But you know, people like Sam
- 27:03Speaker 5: Pittman and Arkansas, like, jeez, man, I had that skid
- 27:05Speaker 5: try I had to play against UMass whatever. Last year
- 27:08Speaker 5: on the road, it'd be a lot different, but that's
- 27:10Speaker 5: not the game that it gets played. But you yeah,
- 27:12Speaker 5: I think Missouri does a good job of scheduling. And
- 27:14Speaker 5: sometimes that's what's about because at the end of the day,
- 27:16Speaker 5: nobody's gonna look back and be like, yeah, your team
- 27:19Speaker 5: went ten and too.
- 27:19Speaker 3: But you know he played these teams whatever. It's like, no,
- 27:21Speaker 3: you went ten and too. That's what people care about it.
- 27:23Speaker 3: That's all that.
- 27:23Speaker 2: Matters, all right. So end of the year, end of
- 27:27Speaker 2: the season, who's playing in the SEC Championship.
- 27:30Speaker 5: I mean, I want to be creative. I want to
- 27:32Speaker 5: be sitting here and be like, ah, man, you know
- 27:33Speaker 5: I could see this team, but it's got a Jordia
- 27:36Speaker 5: and Texas right again, I don't want it to be
- 27:39Speaker 5: I don't want it to have that. I'm really hoping
- 27:40Speaker 5: somebody could step up because there's a lot of uncertainty
- 27:43Speaker 5: with some of these teams and everything. But it's just
- 27:47Speaker 5: hard to go up against those guys.
- 27:48Speaker 2: A lot of uncertnity with Gunner Stockton as well. So
- 27:51Speaker 2: you you kind of believe in him. He showed you.
- 27:53Speaker 5: Enough, yes, all right, yes exactly, and so but I
- 27:56Speaker 5: mean listening to you guys know this as the SEC
- 27:58Speaker 5: LSU could be that team that steps in and you know,
- 28:00Speaker 5: nus Meyer has an incredible year and they start rolling
- 28:02Speaker 5: through it. You know, you could be a team that
- 28:05Speaker 5: just comes out of nowhere like a Florida you know.
- 28:07Speaker 5: Just I mean that's what is always so much fun nowadays,
- 28:10Speaker 5: at least about the SEC is there are some upsets.
- 28:13Speaker 5: I mean, Alabama lost it was it Oklehoman and Vandyburger
- 28:15Speaker 5: last year.
- 28:16Speaker 3: I mean, come on, you never know what's gonna happen.
- 28:18Speaker 5: But to me, I feel like it's those teams and
- 28:21Speaker 5: it's just going to continue to be a fomo as
- 28:23Speaker 5: an Arkansas fan just waving at everybody.
- 28:25Speaker 3: It's like, all right, man, Atlanta must be nice that
- 28:27Speaker 3: time of year. You know, she's been before. There's some
- 28:29Speaker 3: on this list that have you ever been here? And
- 28:30Speaker 3: that's what I always say.
- 28:31Speaker 5: If it pisses me off anybody that ever says Arkansas
- 28:34Speaker 5: you should have just gone to the Big twelve, I'm like,
- 28:35Speaker 5: shut up, okay, because we've been to three SEC title games,
- 28:39Speaker 5: by god, and you know what, Almoss, you've been to
- 28:42Speaker 5: zero and you've been in the Lee the entire time
- 28:44Speaker 5: right in Missisippi State. You went to one, and it
- 28:45Speaker 5: was only because you broke the tiebreaker with Arkansas cause
- 28:47Speaker 5: Sterner couldn't hold onto the ball against Tennessee in ninety eight.
- 28:50Speaker 5: Not that I remember that, So I'm just saying every
- 28:52Speaker 5: Arkansas fan, I could remind it daily. So that and
- 28:55Speaker 5: the pop up foul ball I just wanted to delete
- 28:57Speaker 5: for my memory.
- 28:57Speaker 3: We're gonna bring up baseball with you.
- 28:59Speaker 5: Yeahs. It's a razorre as a Razorreck fan. It's our
- 29:04Speaker 5: kink man. We love being tortured. We love this thing. Man,
- 29:07Speaker 5: It's just what we're born to do. But I'm a
- 29:10Speaker 5: real quick story about that. I just want to tell
- 29:12Speaker 5: us for all your LSU fans out there Arkansas, the
- 29:14Speaker 5: game happened, obviously, we would know I'm up there in
- 29:16Speaker 5: Omah next day.
- 29:17Speaker 2: Uh.
- 29:18Speaker 5: Some LSU fans, which you guys are pretty mean sometimes
- 29:21Speaker 5: all I'll admit. But this Relishue family comes in, they
- 29:24Speaker 5: come up to me and there it's a nice guy
- 29:26Speaker 5: and he goes, hey, man, I just want you to know,
- 29:28Speaker 5: it's like, that was a great game. It sucks you
- 29:31Speaker 5: lost to know you want to hear it, but it
- 29:32Speaker 5: was a great game, great baseball game.
- 29:33Speaker 3: I was like, I don't want to hear it from you.
- 29:35Speaker 5: It's like you can say that because you've won titles
- 29:38Speaker 5: in baseball.
- 29:40Speaker 3: Was it eight titles? Is?
- 29:41Speaker 5: I mean yeah, I'm like, if you can tell me
- 29:43Speaker 5: what's your least favorite national championship is, then I don't
- 29:46Speaker 5: want to hear you tell me. I'm like, I've never
- 29:47Speaker 5: had that before. And so it's just again, you guys
- 29:51Speaker 5: were great. It's a great game. But you know, one
- 29:54Speaker 5: time we're going to have something in Arkansas.
- 29:55Speaker 3: I feel one time. And John it was it's crazy
- 29:59Speaker 3: ways that that it happened.
- 30:00Speaker 4: For sure, we were talking about that just a place,
- 30:01Speaker 4: but also like the side of the bracket. Yeah, you know,
- 30:05Speaker 4: just think if Parkinson LSU or on the opposite side, they're.
- 30:07Speaker 5: Gonna meet Oh yeah, they're gonna be for they seed it.
- 30:10Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, I mean I'd be all for that. And
- 30:12Speaker 5: but I get it's like, you know, who expected Texas
- 30:15Speaker 5: and Vanderbilt and all those teams to lose the way
- 30:17Speaker 5: they did.
- 30:17Speaker 3: But you know that I would have loved that.
- 30:19Speaker 5: It was unfortunate that that happened, but uh, you know,
- 30:22Speaker 5: it's still got to see some cool things like gage
- 30:23Speaker 5: Wood's no hitter was really cool to see, you know,
- 30:25Speaker 5: like stuff like that, and it was.
- 30:27Speaker 3: A great game.
- 30:28Speaker 5: But just one time, man, and seeing Missisippi State and
- 30:31Speaker 5: Old miss have titles Tennessee that ain't no baseball existence
- 30:34Speaker 5: on five years ago. And but our next head coach
- 30:36Speaker 5: is going to be Tony Vattello. So I know, I
- 30:38Speaker 5: appreciate them for holding on to it. But just at
- 30:40Speaker 5: one point in time, we're gonna have one.
- 30:41Speaker 3: I feel it. One in the lifetime, you're gonna get one,
- 30:44Speaker 3: I'm surely, because yeah, it's gonna be.
- 30:47Speaker 5: It's gonna be the day after I die is when
- 30:49Speaker 5: it's gonna happen.
- 30:50Speaker 3: So I can't wait for that.
- 30:51Speaker 4: Uh, they'll still have one, but you just you know,
- 30:54Speaker 4: yeah here, but just knowing your heart, they'll have one.
- 30:56Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, that's I mean, really all that I want,
- 30:58Speaker 5: you know, I don't want to experience it as a
- 31:00Speaker 5: person or anything.
- 31:01Speaker 2: They odd say that eventually there you go.
- 31:04Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, but we'll always have big We will always
- 31:06Speaker 5: have big wins and games. You know, razorback fans they
- 31:08Speaker 5: wanted to hang a banner after you know, beating certain
- 31:10Speaker 5: teams and great, so they oh seven.
- 31:13Speaker 3: Not to bring it out. But yeah, l shoe that
- 31:16Speaker 3: was our national championship.
- 31:17Speaker 5: Yeah, you know we could go one to Yeah yeah,
- 31:18Speaker 5: apparently yours is one that goes a little further than ours.
- 31:21Speaker 3: So uh yeah, we.
- 31:22Speaker 5: Can't beat Kentucky, can't beat Tennessee. But yeah, yeah, every
- 31:27Speaker 5: single time, man, every single time time. We appreciate the
- 31:29Speaker 5: time as always man, they appreciate you guys as always
- 31:32Speaker 5: appreciate you guys. Yep, absolutely all right, we will step

- 33:20Speaker 3: out over there. Well well done.
- 33:23Speaker 4: Gary Stoken joins us now and we get a chance
- 33:26Speaker 4: to catch up with Gary every single year. Talk about
- 33:28Speaker 4: all the great things they've got going on here in Atlanta,
- 33:32Speaker 4: for the Peach Bowl, the kickoff games that they've got
- 33:34Speaker 4: coming up this year.
- 33:35Speaker 3: We will get to all of that. But I told Matt.
- 33:38Speaker 4: Before we started this segment, I was like, I know, Gary,
- 33:41Speaker 4: and I know he is going to know exactly what
- 33:43Speaker 4: you did in two thousand and five against the Miami Hurricanes,
- 33:47Speaker 4: and that that was his first start. That was the
- 33:49Speaker 4: first chance LSU fans, Gary got a chance to see
- 33:51Speaker 4: what this guy could be.
- 33:52Speaker 6: Well, I think you threw for two touchdowns. I think
- 33:54Speaker 6: you ran for seventy yards.
- 33:56Speaker 3: I did. Yeah.
- 33:59Speaker 6: The last time I was sitting around you guys was
- 34:02Speaker 6: twenty years ago and in the Georgia Dome.
- 34:05Speaker 2: That's right. That was a I mean, what a cool
- 34:07Speaker 2: moment for me personally, of course, but I mean it
- 34:09Speaker 2: was It was an incredible season two thousand and five.
- 34:12Speaker 2: It was the year you know Hurricane Katrina. Yeah, yeah,
- 34:14Speaker 2: impacted so many lives in Louisiana. And like they say,
- 34:18Speaker 2: the season started with a hurricane and we ended with
- 34:19Speaker 2: a hurricane.
- 34:20Speaker 6: We you know what, We brought the Sugar Bowl to
- 34:23Speaker 6: Atlanta that year. I talked with Paul hol In and
- 34:26Speaker 6: I said, Paul, you know, I know you can't play
- 34:28Speaker 6: in the super Dome. And everybody was pounding them about
- 34:31Speaker 6: I'll come here, come here. I said, Paul, Look, we'll
- 34:33Speaker 6: help you sell tickets, We'll get you office space. We'll
- 34:37Speaker 6: do whatever we can. It's your decision. If you want
- 34:39Speaker 6: to come up to Atlanta, just know we're going to
- 34:41Speaker 6: be here. And they wound up coming up here. We
- 34:43Speaker 6: got them office space, sold some tickets for him, and
- 34:45Speaker 6: and the Sugar Bowl was a great game with West
- 34:48Speaker 6: Virginia and Georgia, and West Virginia ran them out. Yeah,
- 34:51Speaker 6: so that was probably West Virginia's greatest win ever other
- 34:54Speaker 6: than beating Pitt probably up in their backyard.
- 34:58Speaker 3: Brawl out there. Pit beat West Virginia so we could
- 35:02Speaker 3: go to the National Tip.
- 35:03Speaker 4: That's exactly right, you guys, that that was a very
- 35:07Speaker 4: cool game. And and I've told you this before, but
- 35:10Speaker 4: like the Peach Bowl will always mean so much to
- 35:12Speaker 4: me because one, it was a great week, like first
- 35:15Speaker 4: class everything, y'all did. I mean, I'll never stop eating
- 35:19Speaker 4: Chick fil A because it's just like we got all that,
- 35:21Speaker 4: we like all you can ever just it was like
- 35:24Speaker 4: utopia eating Chick fil A whenever, as.
- 35:28Speaker 2: Much Chick fil A as he wants, and oh my.
- 35:30Speaker 3: God, make him happy.
- 35:31Speaker 2: That's exactly a dream scenario.
- 35:33Speaker 3: Yes, and so I always do.
- 35:35Speaker 4: But Matt did get you know, his first opportunity, and
- 35:37Speaker 4: we were like, you know, we're obviously friends and roommates
- 35:40Speaker 4: on the road, and so like to see him get
- 35:42Speaker 4: that opportunity. And for me, like I didn't know I
- 35:45Speaker 4: was gonna play running back that day, like I was
- 35:47Speaker 4: a starting fullback, but I didn't. And then Joe Die
- 35:50Speaker 4: hurts his hamstring after having a big game. We had
- 35:52Speaker 4: another running back hurt himself on kickoff. We had another
- 35:55Speaker 4: how to miss pass protection or something unless is like
- 35:58Speaker 4: looking in the sidelines, He's like, hester get in there,
- 36:01Speaker 4: and I'm getting there running.
- 36:02Speaker 3: Back and they need you to protect him. And it
- 36:04Speaker 3: was like my first.
- 36:05Speaker 4: Time to like I played a mop up duty and
- 36:07Speaker 4: some different things.
- 36:08Speaker 3: But so in that game I both had a huge impact.
- 36:11Speaker 4: Well in the game, I had an opportunity to play
- 36:13Speaker 4: running back behind like Andrew Whitworth and this incredible offensive line, right,
- 36:16Speaker 4: And so that game allowed me like the next spring
- 36:20Speaker 4: to kind of be the leader in the clubhouse for
- 36:21Speaker 4: the starting running back position after playing fullback my first
- 36:24Speaker 4: two years.
- 36:25Speaker 3: And so yeah, I will never forget the peach ball.
- 36:27Speaker 6: That's a great, great story. Well, I'll never forget that
- 36:29Speaker 6: fight afterwards. I'll think, I mean I'll tell you when
- 36:33Speaker 6: when who is the running who is the wide receiver?
- 36:36Speaker 6: Dwayne Bow's mouthing off of his friends in at Miami,
- 36:40Speaker 6: and as he takes the ball and runs by your bench, right,
- 36:44Speaker 6: I'm standing down in that end zone and he runs by,
- 36:48Speaker 6: gets in the in the tunnel, and the Miami guys
- 36:52Speaker 6: fall him in his buddies. And I mean, you know,
- 36:56Speaker 6: obviously I'm not very big. I'm five to eleven. But
- 36:59Speaker 6: when you get clear on and guys with with pads
- 37:02Speaker 6: on and as big as they were, they're in that
- 37:04Speaker 6: tunnel everybody, and I'm shouting to the guy closed the
- 37:08Speaker 6: gate closing, and they were fighting in there.
- 37:11Speaker 4: It was wild. Will I will never forget. It was
- 37:15Speaker 4: look and it didn't get too out of control, but
- 37:17Speaker 4: it was wild.
- 37:18Speaker 3: But I will never forget. You've got all these, like
- 37:20Speaker 3: you said.
- 37:21Speaker 4: These just large human beings, all these pads and stuff on,
- 37:24Speaker 4: and there was a policeman in there. And when she
- 37:27Speaker 4: hit the taser, Yeah, she had the noise froze everybody exactly.
- 37:32Speaker 3: Yeah, a little bit. I was.
- 37:35Speaker 2: I was in the middle of the field because it
- 37:37Speaker 2: was right after the game and I'm kind of getting interviewed.
- 37:40Speaker 2: Lin Swine somebody like that interviewed me, and all of
- 37:42Speaker 2: a sudden, I, huh, what's the team doing? Run in
- 37:45Speaker 2: that direction? And I was like, huh, what's our team?
- 37:47Speaker 4: Yeah, I was on the field and I and yeah, No,
- 37:51Speaker 4: when you see your teammates and their team going to
- 37:53Speaker 4: a tunnel like, you don't ask questions. You go figure
- 37:55Speaker 4: it out and we'll sort it all out later.
- 37:57Speaker 6: At three in the morning, I'm in a hospital because
- 38:00Speaker 6: the one kid had gashed his head. He had had
- 38:02Speaker 6: five stitches concussion. So I go over to visit in
- 38:05Speaker 6: the hospital. I get back to the Marriotte. I think
- 38:09Speaker 6: Miami was in the Marriotte, if I remember right, And
- 38:13Speaker 6: I'm walking down the hall at like three four in
- 38:15Speaker 6: the morning, and here comes Donna Challey, the the a
- 38:19Speaker 6: d there.
- 38:20Speaker 3: They had fired Cocher that night.
- 38:22Speaker 6: Yeah, they fired him that night. So that was a wild, loud, evening,
- 38:27Speaker 6: wild game. A lot of good memories though, for sure, Well,
- 38:30Speaker 6: how you guys doing about right here?
- 38:33Speaker 2: Yeah, slow up here. A lot of the energy is
- 38:38Speaker 2: not quite.
- 38:38Speaker 6: As you're having me up here, because you know you
- 38:42Speaker 6: join us every year, you know that, and you always.
- 38:44Speaker 3: Tell us about the kickoff games.
- 38:46Speaker 4: Yeah, you got two goods, two really good ones, two
- 38:48Speaker 4: intriguing ones. You've got a C C SEC and the
- 38:51Speaker 4: whole I want to get to Virginia Tech South Carolina.
- 38:53Speaker 4: That's the Beamer Bowl. That's going to be you know,
- 38:55Speaker 4: very very cool, great emotions. But this Syracuse Tennessee game sneaky.
- 39:00Speaker 4: So Syracuse and fran Brown they're ready, like they're not
- 39:04Speaker 4: going to back down from a fight. And then Tennessee
- 39:06Speaker 4: with all the different changes they've had, and they made
- 39:07Speaker 4: the Cosotball playoff as we all know a year ago,
- 39:10Speaker 4: and what that program's at and the expectation there that
- 39:14Speaker 4: one right there.
- 39:15Speaker 3: If you don't if you don't.
- 39:17Speaker 4: Know who Syracuse is, and you're just handwaving and thinking
- 39:20Speaker 4: it's going to be an easy win for Tennessee, that's
- 39:22Speaker 4: not going to be the case at all. Syracuse kept
- 39:24Speaker 4: Miami at a playoff last year, and they might be
- 39:27Speaker 4: better this year than they were a year ago.
- 39:28Speaker 6: Finished in the top twenty, had ten wins. Both teams. Obviously,
- 39:32Speaker 6: Tennessee makes the playoff, but you know, changing quarterbacks is
- 39:37Speaker 6: you know, we're all living in that year and now
- 39:39Speaker 6: with the transfer portal, yeah, it's all free agency, but
- 39:42Speaker 6: tell me about Ricky Collins, because yeah, they be the
- 39:44Speaker 6: starter up there.
- 39:45Speaker 3: At ye Cus. Yeah.
- 39:46Speaker 4: So he was a local kid, you know, from Baton Rouge,
- 39:49Speaker 4: and he was very highly touted.
- 39:50Speaker 3: I do remember when LSU offered him.
- 39:52Speaker 4: It was like at a seven to seven event at
- 39:54Speaker 4: LSU and you kind of heard the buzz like, Okay,
- 39:58Speaker 4: hey there's this local kid. Like I know, we're recruit
- 40:00Speaker 4: in a, B and C from elsewhere, but you got
- 40:01Speaker 4: to come see him, and I'll never forget, like the
- 40:03Speaker 4: LSU coaching staff going to the seven on seven he
- 40:05Speaker 4: threw like two passes like yep, hey, you're staying to
- 40:08Speaker 4: talk to him, you're staying to get his commitment.
- 40:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:10Speaker 3: I mean it was like right there on go. Very talented,
- 40:14Speaker 3: just happened to.
- 40:14Speaker 4: Have maybe the nation's best quarterback in front of him
- 40:16Speaker 4: and Garrett neus Meyer, and so he wanted to get
- 40:18Speaker 4: on the field, wanted to challenge himself.
- 40:20Speaker 3: I think it's actually kind of cool. He didn't try
- 40:22Speaker 3: to maybe stay in the region.
- 40:23Speaker 4: He's like, I want to go to the best situation,
- 40:26Speaker 4: and he goes up to Syracuse, New York and so great.
- 40:28Speaker 4: I think he's gonna be a good player. He was
- 40:30Speaker 4: the backup for LSU last year when Nuss would you know,
- 40:33Speaker 4: he went down a couple of plays. I think it
- 40:34Speaker 4: was old miss game like he was right there, and
- 40:36Speaker 4: so I mean he was somebody LSU really valued in quarterbacks.
- 40:40Speaker 4: We know how it is, like if you're not playing
- 40:41Speaker 4: right now, you go find a spot. But he's a
- 40:43Speaker 4: good player and I'm excited to see him be the guy.
- 40:45Speaker 6: Well, and they got in Jelly from Notre Dame. Yeah,
- 40:47Speaker 6: that was a late transfer.
- 40:48Speaker 3: It was, it was it's late.
- 40:50Speaker 4: So you wonder what that competition is going to kind
- 40:52Speaker 4: of be like because obviously Ricky's going to have a
- 40:54Speaker 4: couple of months on him.
- 40:55Speaker 6: Yeah, he jo that should be good. And then Tennessee
- 40:57Speaker 6: with Aguilar right the trade.
- 40:59Speaker 3: With he literally.
- 41:03Speaker 6: Who knows what he's going to bring to Tennessee. But
- 41:05Speaker 6: you know they've got to they got to get their
- 41:07Speaker 6: running back situation with Samson gone. You know, but Tennessee
- 41:10Speaker 6: is going to be very good this year as well.
- 41:13Speaker 2: Garry, I'm really like curious just about the not the
- 41:17Speaker 2: business side, but how these games get scheduled. I mean,
- 41:19Speaker 2: last year you had Clemson Georgia, You've had Top twenty five,
- 41:22Speaker 2: you have Top ten, matchups in this kickoff game. I
- 41:24Speaker 2: think the kickout game is starting in two thousand and eight, Right,
- 41:27Speaker 2: how do those discussions go and how long before those
- 41:31Speaker 2: those games get scheduled? It just how do you get
- 41:34Speaker 2: these big teams year after year to commit to these
- 41:37Speaker 2: games and kind of how does that partnership work out?
- 41:39Speaker 6: Well, you know, I use a philosophy. I'm an old coach,
- 41:41Speaker 6: so I use a philosophy of rocks. You gotta have
- 41:44Speaker 6: guts and you know, I don't want to say it
- 41:46Speaker 6: on air, where you got to have right, yeah, rocks right?
- 41:49Speaker 6: Rocks is Building relationships are Oh, you got to be opportunistic.
- 41:54Speaker 6: Uh see, you got to be create competitive and s
- 41:56Speaker 6: you got to be strategic. So the way I look
- 41:59Speaker 6: at things is I'll look at recruiting, I'll look at
- 42:02Speaker 6: how long a coach contract is. You know, you analyze
- 42:06Speaker 6: all that stuff to start with, and then just through relationships,
- 42:10Speaker 6: you start talking to people. John wild Hack was at
- 42:12Speaker 6: ESPN and we signed a lot of contracts with him,
- 42:16Speaker 6: TV contracts at Chick fil A Peach Bowl. So when
- 42:18Speaker 6: he got the job at Syracuse, he said, Gary, trying
- 42:20Speaker 6: to build a program, would love to come. You know,
- 42:22Speaker 6: when you can fit us in in the kickoff game.
- 42:26Speaker 6: You know, Tennessee, we've talked to Danny White. We had
- 42:29Speaker 6: him when they won the national championship against Auburn and
- 42:32Speaker 6: our Chick fil A Peach Bowl when they.
- 42:33Speaker 3: Were a uc Yeah.
- 42:34Speaker 6: Yeah, So you know you got relationships. I'll tell you
- 42:38Speaker 6: the best one and it relates to LSU. Back to you, guys,
- 42:42Speaker 6: is back in two thousand. I get a call from
- 42:47Speaker 6: Nick Saban at LSU and he says, Gary, we're eight
- 42:50Speaker 6: and four. The best bowl we can get to is
- 42:52Speaker 6: the Peach Bowl. We're trying to build a program here.
- 42:55Speaker 6: I think it was his first or second year. You know,
- 42:57Speaker 6: we got to get it to the Peach Bowl. And
- 42:59Speaker 6: so I flied. Now first time and only time I
- 43:02Speaker 6: ever got a call from a coach to play in
- 43:04Speaker 6: our bowl game.
- 43:05Speaker 3: I fly down.
- 43:05Speaker 6: I meet with him, I meet with Charlie Weams, who's
- 43:08Speaker 6: chairman of the board, and I meet with Mark Emmert,
- 43:10Speaker 6: who was canceled. And they said, we'll.
- 43:13Speaker 3: Do it whatever we can.
- 43:14Speaker 6: We want to get to your game. So we took
- 43:16Speaker 6: Georgia Tech, who was like thirteenth in the country and
- 43:20Speaker 6: Gatzi was their quarterback, and so I fly back, and
- 43:24Speaker 6: my job was to pick the team. So I'd go
- 43:26Speaker 6: to my board and I said, we're going to take LSU. Yeah, no, no, no, no,
- 43:29Speaker 6: we don't want LSU. I said, what do you mean
- 43:31Speaker 6: you don't want LSU. And again, this is two thousand.
- 43:34Speaker 6: I took the job in ninety eight. They said, we
- 43:37Speaker 6: had LSU in ninety six with Donardo. He wasn't very good.
- 43:40Speaker 6: He didn't promote the game, they got beat by Clemson,
- 43:43Speaker 6: they didn't sell any tickets. We don't want LSU back,
- 43:47Speaker 6: I said, well, I'm just telling you. The coach, the
- 43:49Speaker 6: chairman of the board, and the athletic or the president
- 43:52Speaker 6: said they'll do whatever we need to do. So I
- 43:55Speaker 6: take LSU.
- 43:55Speaker 3: I tell my board.
- 43:57Speaker 6: I said, look, if they don't do what they said
- 43:58Speaker 6: they're going to do, you can fire me.
- 44:00Speaker 3: Because in my second year, I.
- 44:01Speaker 6: Said, I'm putting my job on the line.
- 44:03Speaker 3: In the farm.
- 44:04Speaker 6: The first day of ticket sales, they sell sixteen, four
- 44:08Speaker 6: and twenty one tickets. I still remember mister Gil sold
- 44:12Speaker 6: one thousand tickets and gave yellow shirts to all his
- 44:16Speaker 6: employees and said you get your asses to a land
- 44:18Speaker 6: and support the tigers. And so LSU came up Rohan
- 44:22Speaker 6: Davey came in the second half, spotted Josh Boody and
- 44:26Speaker 6: hits Josh Reed in the back of the end zone
- 44:29Speaker 6: and they win twenty eight fourteen. So I go back
- 44:33Speaker 6: on campus as we've done every year for twenty eight years,
- 44:36Speaker 6: to do a good, bad and the ugly, you know,
- 44:38Speaker 6: to continue improvement, to find out what we need to
- 44:41Speaker 6: improve on. And Nick tells me, you know, Gary, every
- 44:44Speaker 6: kid that we were recruiting signed with us that year,
- 44:49Speaker 6: and that was the Marcus Spears group that won the
- 44:51Speaker 6: championship in three so Nick felt indebted. Fast forward to eight,
- 44:57Speaker 6: I'm putting together this kickoff game format because the BCS
- 45:02Speaker 6: was going to a fifth game, and Austin the Cotton
- 45:05Speaker 6: Pole really put in strong bids. Well, Paul Julian, who's
- 45:09Speaker 6: good friend of ours who since passed away, talked the
- 45:12Speaker 6: commissioners into letting the Sugar Rows, Orange and Fiesta double host,
- 45:17Speaker 6: where they'd host third game and then two weeks later
- 45:19Speaker 6: host the National Championship on a rotational basis. And so
- 45:23Speaker 6: we didn't get in. So the next year, the NC
- 45:26Speaker 6: Double A legislates a twelfth game, so I'd go on
- 45:28Speaker 6: my board. I'm competitive again, I said, well, if they're
- 45:32Speaker 6: not going to listen on the BCS in the backside
- 45:33Speaker 6: of the season, we're starting to BCS on the front
- 45:36Speaker 6: side of the season. And so I came up with
- 45:38Speaker 6: Alabama and Clemson. I get Clemson, who had Spiller and
- 45:42Speaker 6: was going to be top ten, and I go to
- 45:44Speaker 6: Nick and I said, Nick, he was in his second year.
- 45:47Speaker 6: He had finished seven and six. Oh yeah, Louisiana beating Louisiana.
- 45:51Speaker 6: MUSI yeah, to get to seven and six his first year,
- 45:55Speaker 6: people don't forget, don't remember that. And so he said, Gary,
- 45:59Speaker 6: you helped me out at LU I'll help you come
- 46:01Speaker 6: over in this game. So he came over. They won
- 46:04Speaker 6: thirty four to ten. Cover Sports illustrate Alabama's back and
- 46:07Speaker 6: if Nick were sitting here, he tell you that's the
- 46:10Speaker 6: run they've been on was because of this game. And
- 46:13Speaker 6: so the next year they come in number five, Virginia
- 46:18Speaker 6: Tech was number seven. Frank Beemer, they beat Virginia Tech
- 46:21Speaker 6: and they win the national championship. So you know, that's
- 46:24Speaker 6: that's long story about how these things get done is relationships,
- 46:30Speaker 6: like most things in business, So it's even very blessed
- 46:33Speaker 6: to have them.
- 46:35Speaker 2: Like I know, our listeners are going to be a
- 46:36Speaker 2: true like, yeah, that story about two thousand that started
- 46:41Speaker 2: some like like you said, I mean that that led
- 46:42Speaker 2: to the recruiting class that led O three national championship.
- 46:45Speaker 2: I started started this run that LSU is on still today.
- 46:49Speaker 2: One of the blue bloods in college football was you know,
- 46:52Speaker 2: Savan being there early on. So it's a that's a
- 46:54Speaker 2: fascinating story.
- 46:55Speaker 6: But about LSU. When when you guys lose in the
- 47:01Speaker 6: championship game of the SEC year, oh finally, and everybody
- 47:06Speaker 6: passes on you, Yeah, and I said, I can't pass
- 47:08Speaker 6: on him, so we're gonna and typically you don't want
- 47:10Speaker 6: to come back to Atlanta, right because you just play
- 47:12Speaker 6: in the SEC championship game. So I take l s
- 47:16Speaker 6: U and that was you know, getting Miami was number ten,
- 47:18Speaker 6: you got, oh yeah, nine.
- 47:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 47:20Speaker 6: I goes down to the l SU to do the
- 47:22Speaker 6: press conference and you know, less Les grabs my arm
- 47:26Speaker 6: and shakes and says, you have a damn fine team
- 47:28Speaker 6: coming to Atlanta. Just about took my shoulder out of socket,
- 47:34Speaker 6: and he says, but I need to talk to you.
- 47:36Speaker 6: I said, okay, and we go back in this office.
- 47:38Speaker 3: It was right before the press conference.
- 47:39Speaker 6: He said, Garrett, I can't say chick fil A.
- 47:43Speaker 3: I said, what do you mean? Less?
- 47:45Speaker 6: He says, I have a deal with Raisin King.
- 47:48Speaker 3: I said, who the hell is Raising King raising k
- 47:52Speaker 3: here in Atlanta back then? Yeah? And he said, well,
- 47:55Speaker 3: they're a chicken company. Yeah. And I said, well, don't
- 47:58Speaker 3: say Chick fil a, just say peachball.
- 47:59Speaker 2: That's fine, you know, last tyfficult less, I gotta tell you.
- 48:05Speaker 3: Yeah, it was like I thought he was.
- 48:07Speaker 6: Gonna say, I'm gonna I'm gonna send nuclear war bombs somewhere,
- 48:12Speaker 6: you know, or I gotta I gotta talk to you.
- 48:15Speaker 3: We got to meet in your off in my office.
- 48:18Speaker 2: I expect you to say that. He was about to say,
- 48:20Speaker 2: I can't bring my starting quarterback.
- 48:26Speaker 4: Kind of kind of whimpy kid from Tyler, Texas.
- 48:31Speaker 6: I knew you guys weren't going to lose that game
- 48:33Speaker 6: when when he shook my hand and said that, you
- 48:35Speaker 6: gotta damn fud.
- 48:37Speaker 3: We beat Miami on the field and in the tunnel.
- 48:39Speaker 3: It was a great there for the l Gary. It's
- 48:43Speaker 3: always a pleasure everybody. Guys, Thanks so much, so much.
- 48:47Speaker 3: Look forward to the semi final this year, and I
- 48:50Speaker 3: know and I'll be here.
- 48:51Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 48:51Speaker 4: Atlanta's always Yeah, Atlanta is always on my rotation there
- 48:54Speaker 4: for serious six c M.
- 48:55Speaker 3: So you know I'll be here.
- 48:57Speaker 4: Kickoff games Syracuse, Tennessee, Virginia Tech in South Carolina.

- 50:49Speaker 4: All right, welcome back in OGB one oh four five
- 50:52Speaker 4: ESPN Baton Rouge Shake, Gary Stoking on talking a little
- 50:56Speaker 4: LSU history.
- 50:58Speaker 2: I was fascinating to you had heard some of those.
- 51:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I'd heard it before. And Gary and I get
- 51:02Speaker 4: a chance to catch up. But still that look. Just
- 51:04Speaker 4: some LSU fans at the first time OTV listeners, maybe
- 51:06Speaker 4: they get a chance to hear that story. It's always
- 51:09Speaker 4: fascinating to me and Coach Saban and him wanting to
- 51:11Speaker 4: get LSU out in front of everybody, because you know,
- 51:15Speaker 4: Coach Savan talks about it often. He always felt like
- 51:17Speaker 4: LSU was a sleeping giant. And it's not like LSU
- 51:20Speaker 4: hadn't had runs and uh, you know fifties and sixties
- 51:24Speaker 4: and the eighties and well not the nineties, but they
- 51:27Speaker 4: had runs in their history, right, and so it wasn't
- 51:30Speaker 4: but he knew l S you could be more. He
- 51:32Speaker 4: knew LSU could be consistently a blue blood. And that's
- 51:35Speaker 4: really one of you know, the signs and the times
- 51:38Speaker 4: you can point to that made that happen.
- 51:40Speaker 3: So it's always a very cool story.
- 51:41Speaker 4: And again, like for you and I, the Peach Bowl
- 51:45Speaker 4: was the biggest moment in our careers to that point
- 51:48Speaker 4: for sure.
- 51:48Speaker 2: Absolutely the starters started like me and then that was
- 51:51Speaker 2: the first start.
- 51:52Speaker 3: That was your first starting, It was my first life.
- 51:54Speaker 3: I had a couple of year out.
- 51:55Speaker 2: A couple of good pass on North Texas that year and.
- 51:57Speaker 4: The fourth I was probably in there with you as well,
- 52:00Speaker 4: Mom squad that was my at that time, that was
- 52:03Speaker 4: my running back snaps yep, and there gets the mean green.
- 52:06Speaker 2: But that story to me about Nick Saban calling him that,
- 52:10Speaker 2: just like it goes to show you that we all
- 52:12Speaker 2: know Nick Saban's greatest coach of all time in college
- 52:15Speaker 2: football because of what he could do on the field
- 52:17Speaker 2: and the teams. But it's those little things behind closed
- 52:20Speaker 2: doors that he did to build a program, right, Like
- 52:23Speaker 2: that was so cerebral on the big picture. Like Gary
- 52:27Speaker 2: just said, I'd never had a coach call me before,
- 52:30Speaker 2: right and try to get into a game because he
- 52:32Speaker 2: knew what he could do for them. So I mean
- 52:36Speaker 2: that's just the kind of like awareness, cerebral, a big
- 52:38Speaker 2: picture outlook that it takes to build a program. Yeah,
- 52:42Speaker 2: and like we saw it for over a decade nauseatingly
- 52:46Speaker 2: with Alabama, Like those are just the things not only
- 52:49Speaker 2: on the field, but as a CEO and a runner
- 52:51Speaker 2: of a program. Yeah. Pretty impressive and a really really
- 52:54Speaker 2: cool story to hear.
- 52:56Speaker 3: All Right.
- 52:56Speaker 4: Coming up in our number three, we're gonna hopefully catch
- 52:59Speaker 4: up with some tucky players.
- 53:00Speaker 3: I think Josh Katis tight end is going to come
- 53:02Speaker 3: see us.
- 53:03Speaker 4: We'll start to get into some of those win totals
- 53:06Speaker 4: as well. The teams from yesterday, the teams today. We
- 53:09Speaker 4: have all that coming back your way. Our number three
- 53:11Speaker 4: of OTB on one oh four five ESPN, Baton rouge
