- 0:19Speaker 1: Journagore podcast, Hunter's Arberniky Austin Rose go to Free Tag Nebraska.
- 0:26Speaker 1: It's seven and three for the first time and a
- 0:32Speaker 1: long long time. We cannot get worse from last year
- 0:36Speaker 1: to this year from an overall record standpoint.
- 0:38Speaker 2: It's a good feeling. Boys.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Yeah, Like I was, I was trying to give my
- 0:46Speaker 3: thoughts and it. You know, it feels like when you
- 0:49Speaker 3: graduate high School's like, wait, that's it, Like it feels good,
- 0:55Speaker 3: but I don't know. You just thought you feel you
- 0:58Speaker 3: feel special.
- 0:58Speaker 1: But it's like, oh no, so we've returned to glory.
- 1:01Speaker 1: That's what you're saying, We've returned.
- 1:04Speaker 4: I don't know if it's to return our last podcast
- 1:07Speaker 4: and that was it the seventh wind did that was it?
- 1:10Speaker 4: That's exactly how It's exactly how everybody everybody thought. And
- 1:15Speaker 4: rasting eight the seventh win, coming the season, TJ Latif
- 1:18Speaker 4: leading the team looking great.
- 1:20Speaker 5: But that's exactly how I was gonna go.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Yeah, No, it went better than I thought it was
- 1:31Speaker 3: going to. I thought we were gonna lose, but I
- 1:32Speaker 3: also thought I thought it was gonna because we're going
- 1:34Speaker 3: to turn the ball over and I thought they were
- 1:36Speaker 3: going to actually let the teeth pass the ball, but
- 1:39Speaker 3: they didn't have to.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Weird concept, Yeah, weird concept when your quarterback can run.
- 1:48Speaker 3: Well, it wasn't really what he did on the ground.
- 1:49Speaker 3: He didn't do a lot on the ground.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Oh, Austin, we're just gonna have a fun podcast. We're
- 1:54Speaker 1: gonna have a fun podcast.
- 1:58Speaker 2: But yes, I it was a good win.
- 2:01Speaker 3: It is u c l A.
- 2:04Speaker 1: And you know, there's a lot of different ways to
- 2:06Speaker 1: look at this, and I think.
- 2:09Speaker 2: All can be true. Like of what we say, it
- 2:13Speaker 2: is just one game.
- 2:14Speaker 3: It was u C l A.
- 2:16Speaker 1: But there definitely was some different things that happened this
- 2:18Speaker 1: game and to where I mean I wash a little
- 2:22Speaker 1: bit probably shocking and surprising. I'm not sure why it
- 2:25Speaker 1: should be. But the biggest thing that I saw was
- 2:28Speaker 1: we stepped up and played hard.
- 2:30Speaker 2: And I mean that's that to me is a credit.
- 2:32Speaker 1: To the the program on where it's at and not
- 2:36Speaker 1: folding when when there's a lot of maybe adversity right
- 2:41Speaker 1: now for different reasons. It just shows that we've we've
- 2:46Speaker 1: we've taken a step forward, I guess too, overcome some
- 2:50Speaker 1: of those things. And I think it's a step right,
- 2:52Speaker 1: It's not, it's not for me it's not, well, we
- 2:56Speaker 1: can't overreact, and I guess what that's what podcases are
- 3:00Speaker 1: kind of four, and I guess fans in general and
- 3:03Speaker 1: the overreactions have already started, obviously, But I do think
- 3:07Speaker 1: it's it's a step, it's a first. I don't know
- 3:11Speaker 1: next step. But there's two more games left. I think
- 3:14Speaker 1: that's the big thing. And and UCLA was the easier
- 3:18Speaker 1: opponent right with and obviously we're talking a lot about
- 3:23Speaker 1: TJ and this offense without Dylan, But I'm just gonna
- 3:26Speaker 1: stay in general with this program too, of where where
- 3:28Speaker 1: it's at and where the belief and concepts and thoughts
- 3:31Speaker 1: are moving forward. There's still two more games of the season,
- 3:35Speaker 1: and yes, we could sit here and talk and we'll
- 3:38Speaker 1: probably get a little bit to it about the future
- 3:40Speaker 1: of Nebraska football after this year. But I do think
- 3:44Speaker 1: it's important to notice where we're at now because things
- 3:48Speaker 1: there's gonna change, obviously in today's college football world, from
- 3:54Speaker 1: I mean in season two, but from one season to
- 3:56Speaker 1: the NeXT's gonna look very, very, very different. And we
- 3:59Speaker 1: could say here and talk about that every episode and
- 4:02Speaker 1: for a long time on what we think and at
- 4:05Speaker 1: nauseum about that. But I also think we need to
- 4:06Speaker 1: appreciate and really and where we're at now and what
- 4:10Speaker 1: this season, what this game meant first off, and then
- 4:13Speaker 1: you know where it leads us to think for the
- 4:15Speaker 1: rest of the year in year three under Matt rules,
- 4:19Speaker 1: that's how I want to tackle today a little bit
- 4:21Speaker 1: is try to keep it but the game focused a
- 4:26Speaker 1: little bit because there's a lot of things in the
- 4:28Speaker 1: game that I think were very good. But then also
- 4:31Speaker 1: just for the rest of the season, like what that
- 4:33Speaker 1: means for our bye week Penn State and Iowa and
- 4:36Speaker 1: then heading into a bowl game at the end of
- 4:39Speaker 1: the year. That kind to bring up with his name
- 4:44Speaker 1: right from the beginning, he just has to do it.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, that's that's the conversation piece from the game, right. Yeah.
- 4:55Speaker 3: He looks really good the first half. I mean, he
- 4:58Speaker 3: looked at the game. He just I don't know, I know,
- 5:01Speaker 3: you're gonna come out really high on I thought he
- 5:03Speaker 3: didn't really have to do a whole lot. You only
- 5:04Speaker 3: had eight passes in the first half.
- 5:06Speaker 2: You don't have to you know, you don't.
- 5:08Speaker 1: You do not have to win that when when when
- 5:10Speaker 1: the philosophy and the system is designed around that, you
- 5:15Speaker 1: don't have to. I don't there's no nothing necessary needed
- 5:17Speaker 1: to do. And again it's U c l A. We'll
- 5:19Speaker 1: see if it works.
- 5:20Speaker 3: It works when the team is one of the worst
- 5:22Speaker 3: running defense teams in the Big Ten. Yeah, against Iowa
- 5:25Speaker 3: and Penn State that it's not gonna be the case.
- 5:30Speaker 6: I think there's there's a lot of people that need
- 5:33Speaker 6: credit for this win, but Dana Dan needs a lot
- 5:36Speaker 6: of credit for being able to change the offense like
- 5:38Speaker 6: he did in just one week, Like come out there
- 5:42Speaker 6: and have the offense one like that.
- 5:44Speaker 5: There wasn't really any terrible places at all. I can
- 5:47Speaker 5: remember from the offensive side of the ball.
- 5:50Speaker 1: You're gonna say that was our best offensive game from
- 5:52Speaker 1: a flow standpoint, easily take.
- 5:55Speaker 3: Out both switching hunt until the third quarter or something
- 5:59Speaker 3: like that. Yeah.
- 6:01Speaker 6: Since since Dane has been here, though, it's like you said,
- 6:03Speaker 6: full of wise, it seems like the offense every game,
- 6:06Speaker 6: the offense always has about.
- 6:07Speaker 5: A quarter or a quarter and a half where it's
- 6:09Speaker 5: just chopping.
- 6:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:12Speaker 5: Yeah, and that didn't happen this game.
- 6:16Speaker 1: And I think the best part about it that I appreciated.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Now you don't complete a couple of passes and you're pissed.
- 6:24Speaker 1: But the closing drive to end the game with four
- 6:27Speaker 1: minutes to go, Like we've talked about closing games out
- 6:32Speaker 1: and yes, to this game get more hairy than it
- 6:34Speaker 1: needed to.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Yes you could. We could sit here and talk about
- 6:37Speaker 2: that forever too.
- 6:38Speaker 1: But we actually got the ball up a touchdown, didn't
- 6:42Speaker 1: give you cla a chance to tie it, and ran
- 6:46Speaker 1: the clock out and involved completing a couple of passes
- 6:49Speaker 1: that TJ TJ made And at the same time, you know,
- 6:54Speaker 1: Dana called those plays and if again, if you don't
- 6:56Speaker 1: complete those passes, you go, what the hell is that?
- 6:59Speaker 2: Like, make him use it time out earlier, run the ball.
- 7:02Speaker 2: But we did, and that's what matters.
- 7:05Speaker 1: And we were able to run the clock out and
- 7:07Speaker 1: take three knees to end the game with the ball it.
- 7:12Speaker 1: You haven't seen that, so that that to me was
- 7:14Speaker 1: a big positive or a big sign for the this
- 7:17Speaker 1: offense in general. And Dak, I agree with you a lot.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Dana does get a lot should get a lot of
- 7:21Speaker 1: credit for this. And I've heard a lot of talk
- 7:24Speaker 1: about his play calling, his system, his design, whatever that
- 7:28Speaker 1: is with different quarterbacks, and I don't really care. I
- 7:35Speaker 1: just I'm looking at more of the flow in general
- 7:38Speaker 1: and the comfortability nature of it. We threw more slants
- 7:41Speaker 1: this game. We obviously had some screens. We threw the
- 7:44Speaker 1: ball downfield some but like we didn't see some of
- 7:48Speaker 1: those ever.
- 7:50Speaker 6: Like it's it's it's kind of on the side too,
- 7:53Speaker 6: like where's that been all year too?
- 7:55Speaker 5: Like look at that, I don't.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Because a little bit of game script.
- 8:00Speaker 1: It's a little bit of game script, right, Like we
- 8:01Speaker 1: had the lead, like Austin said, we didn't have to.
- 8:04Speaker 2: But to me, that's that's the game script you should
- 8:06Speaker 2: have in every game if it works.
- 8:08Speaker 1: And yeah, right like that, that's what it should look
- 8:11Speaker 1: like if if you're in that position.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Now we're not.
- 8:13Speaker 1: We always aren't in that position, and you could be
- 8:16Speaker 1: playing from behind, and yeah, it does look different, but
- 8:18Speaker 1: you know you don't want to get to that point.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean when em it can get five yards
- 8:23Speaker 3: to carry easy, it seemed like every every time you
- 8:26Speaker 3: touch the ball, you don't you don't have to get creative,
- 8:29Speaker 3: you just you just have to make easy, high percentage plays.
- 8:34Speaker 1: And that's thanks for bringing it up, because we've gotten
- 8:38Speaker 1: this along without even saying his name.
- 8:40Speaker 2: I mean, come on, guys, it is we got something special,
- 8:45Speaker 2: like he's.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Unfortunately the other topic is going into next year's he's
- 8:53Speaker 1: probably not going to be here because he's going to
- 8:55Speaker 1: go to the draft.
- 8:56Speaker 5: I don't get that check. But got Hunter he might stay.
- 8:59Speaker 1: And that's a very loaded question, right, like obviously paying
- 9:03Speaker 1: money to keep him here.
- 9:05Speaker 2: But I think it's a little bit more than that.
- 9:07Speaker 1: When if you are looking at an NFL career, you
- 9:09Speaker 1: know your shelf life of a running back in the
- 9:11Speaker 1: NFL is limited to begin with.
- 9:14Speaker 3: The salary of a running back in the NFL is
- 9:16Speaker 3: also limited.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Yeah, so that's what's that. That's the conversation again in
- 9:22Speaker 1: the next year. You want to talk about money and
- 9:25Speaker 1: how to navigate this thing with and just to be Frank, Dylon, Emmett,
- 9:31Speaker 1: TJ and Dana right like, and I included coaches in
- 9:37Speaker 1: there too, like you have this money to allocate and
- 9:39Speaker 1: obviously with high named players and I'm gonna throw a
- 9:42Speaker 1: fifth one in there, offensive lineman. And I'm not going
- 9:46Speaker 1: away from that, like just because we looked good and
- 9:49Speaker 1: didn't give up a sack today like that, that's still
- 9:52Speaker 1: the number number one most important position that we need
- 9:55Speaker 1: to be allocating resources to.
- 9:57Speaker 3: So don't. People can't.
- 9:58Speaker 2: I haven't heard anybody talk about the offensive line this.
- 10:00Speaker 3: Week because because the running game looked great.
- 10:04Speaker 1: But that still needs to be the number one focus
- 10:07Speaker 1: in the offseason, and if we don't, it's concerning for
- 10:09Speaker 1: the future.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Still For me, which is it?
- 10:12Speaker 3: I did not play football. Sorry the listeners, who that's
- 10:17Speaker 3: you know fifty values? My opinion?
- 10:19Speaker 5: I didn't either.
- 10:20Speaker 3: Is it easier to my assumption is an alignment it's
- 10:23Speaker 3: easier to block for runs because you're in total control
- 10:26Speaker 3: of what you you know exactly what you need to do.
- 10:29Speaker 3: You're not You're working with what's in front of you
- 10:32Speaker 3: and not what's behind you. Yeah, that's a fair assumption.
- 10:35Speaker 3: So in theory, a game where you run the ball
- 10:38Speaker 3: thirty nine times compared to fifteen passes, it should it
- 10:41Speaker 3: should be an easier game plan for a worse offensive line.
- 10:45Speaker 5: Well, run I think, is you just gotta go find
- 10:49Speaker 5: a guy and hit him like it's right.
- 10:51Speaker 3: That's what I'm saying, is you're working with the guy
- 10:52Speaker 3: in front of you and not the one behind you.
- 10:57Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 10:57Speaker 1: I guess it's maybe a simple way to put it.
- 11:00Speaker 1: I didn't play offensive line either, But to me, it's
- 11:04Speaker 1: just it's two different types of blocking. Yeah, I think
- 11:08Speaker 1: it is all still very schematic based, and I know
- 11:11Speaker 1: there's very different types of run scheme blocking that different
- 11:15Speaker 1: teams utilize, whether it be they call it a zone
- 11:17Speaker 1: and man blocking. I mean past pro I would say,
- 11:21Speaker 1: is a little bit more coordinated communication to make sure
- 11:26Speaker 1: that everybody's accounting for on the blitz, and that's where
- 11:28Speaker 1: you see quarterbacks calling out protection and different guys blitzing
- 11:34Speaker 1: because you got to make sure everybody's hat on a hat.
- 11:36Speaker 1: But at the same time, yeah, I mean you're you're
- 11:41Speaker 1: to me, run blocking is more fun because it's like
- 11:42Speaker 1: I get to go kill somebody versus I'm protecting somebody.
- 11:46Speaker 1: That that that maybe is kind of what you're saying,
- 11:48Speaker 1: is you're you're trying to bury someone versus trying not
- 11:52Speaker 1: to get buried. So yeah, maybe, yeah, I.
- 11:57Speaker 3: I was just a thought I had while watching the
- 11:59Speaker 3: game because that's the offensive line like good again, one
- 12:02Speaker 3: of the worst running defenses running defenses in the league.
- 12:05Speaker 3: So there's there's a reason.
- 12:08Speaker 1: And I'm glad we utilize that and ran Emmett as
- 12:13Speaker 1: much as we can. And and I've heard very very
- 12:18Speaker 1: wide opinions on Emmett and his usage from everybody, I
- 12:23Speaker 1: mean from fans and even Dana mentioned it Thursday in
- 12:26Speaker 1: his coaches press conference on.
- 12:30Speaker 2: We can't keep giving him at the ball.
- 12:33Speaker 3: He doesn't believe that he's.
- 12:37Speaker 1: I think that's maybe a message to the players to
- 12:40Speaker 1: get other guys to step up.
- 12:41Speaker 2: But guys, we just we don't have it.
- 12:43Speaker 1: We don't have the other running backs right now that
- 12:46Speaker 1: are even comparable to Emmett. And when Emmett looks like
- 12:49Speaker 1: he does, give him the ball thirty times, and and yes,
- 12:54Speaker 1: is there a chance that he gets injured because of
- 12:56Speaker 1: over usage, Yes there is.
- 12:59Speaker 2: There's always that. We've been saying that since Game one
- 13:02Speaker 2: of Cincinnati, like, come on, run, run him out and
- 13:09Speaker 2: use him while we have him.
- 13:11Speaker 1: And yes, if that leads to potentially him getting hurt,
- 13:14Speaker 1: then then that so be it. But we we cannot
- 13:16Speaker 1: play scared of guys. We said that even with Dylan
- 13:21Speaker 1: running the ball. I still believe you can't play scared
- 13:24Speaker 1: with running the ball with anybody.
- 13:27Speaker 5: Now.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Am I saying that your starting quarterbacks would go and
- 13:29Speaker 1: try to truck people every time? No, But but you
- 13:33Speaker 1: can't play scared of injury in any sport if if
- 13:36Speaker 1: you if you start playing scared of an injury, that's
- 13:38Speaker 1: when injuries usually happened. So I've got to get thirty
- 13:43Speaker 1: touches last two games, and I think he will and
- 13:46Speaker 1: he's a dude for doing it. It's awesome, like it
- 13:49Speaker 1: it's impressive. And I've heard the Heisman thrown out.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Like getting getting an invite, not winning, but getting an
- 13:56Speaker 2: invite to New York.
- 13:58Speaker 1: He is in the I think the All Big and
- 14:00Speaker 1: should be All Big Ten first team with what he's
- 14:03Speaker 1: done and potentially in the All American conversation. I do
- 14:07Speaker 1: think that we just look at pure numbers, but then
- 14:10Speaker 1: also the impact that he has on this team, Like it's.
- 14:12Speaker 6: Like you you can say he's the he's the best
- 14:14Speaker 6: running back Big ten, like pretty confidently right now.
- 14:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean the Wreckers guy is probably the second best.
- 14:22Speaker 3: Et I'm trying to.
- 14:23Speaker 6: Think, yeah, uh, I can't think anyone else, but yeah.
- 14:28Speaker 3: He's Haines from Michigan. He had a little run there.
- 14:34Speaker 3: I definitely seem like Isaiahs like it's not even you
- 14:38Speaker 3: know the time about can't just keep you it to
- 14:40Speaker 3: I mean isa Mozy only had one carry the whole game,
- 14:42Speaker 3: Like it's not. It's not like we're testing it out
- 14:44Speaker 3: like it's not working. It's like you give a guy
- 14:47Speaker 3: one carry and you're like, but.
- 14:48Speaker 1: I'm but my thought is and this and just go
- 14:50Speaker 1: back to they see it in practice, they see the difference.
- 14:54Speaker 1: I agree, And we saw the different We see the
- 14:56Speaker 1: difference in those one or two snaps.
- 14:58Speaker 2: It just looks so much different, slower. Uh.
- 15:01Speaker 1: So the game's not a time to freaking test out.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Can these other backs do that's not the time to
- 15:07Speaker 1: do it. I mean maybe against Houston Christian and accurate
- 15:11Speaker 1: it is, but not against these big ten teams.
- 15:13Speaker 2: You can't waste to carry. I'm not calling it a waste,
- 15:16Speaker 2: but to me, that's not it's not.
- 15:18Speaker 1: They know what they know, They see it, and that's
- 15:20Speaker 1: why Emmitt's getting the carries that he's getting because he's
- 15:23Speaker 1: that much better than these other two. Not saying the
- 15:25Speaker 1: other two are bad by any means, but Emmitt's just
- 15:28Speaker 1: really freaking good right now. So give him the ball
- 15:31Speaker 1: as much as we can.
- 15:32Speaker 3: Uh.
- 15:33Speaker 2: That's how we're gonna have to win games, and that
- 15:35Speaker 2: is how we should win games.
- 15:36Speaker 1: That's I think the style that you want to be. Now,
- 15:40Speaker 1: you got to do that with the masterisk because of
- 15:42Speaker 1: the offensive line. But when you play a team like
- 15:45Speaker 1: UCLA with the offensive line we have it, it's gonna
- 15:47Speaker 1: look pretty damn good.
- 15:47Speaker 3: And it did. We only had four people catch passes,
- 15:54Speaker 3: four people run the ball, and two of the Beneva
- 15:58Speaker 3: Johnson was one of each, so I mean there was
- 16:00Speaker 3: not a lot of people touched. I mean, you know,
- 16:03Speaker 3: but getting kind of stole that a little bit in
- 16:05Speaker 3: the second half. But we also changed how we were
- 16:06Speaker 3: playing because we had a big lead.
- 16:09Speaker 5: Linda, I didn't have a catch, did he Nope? Yeah?
- 16:12Speaker 3: No, Yeah. So of the four people who ran the ball,
- 16:18Speaker 3: only two you know and Heyer Carberg each only had
- 16:21Speaker 3: one each. So really we had you know, five man
- 16:24Speaker 3: offense operating out there.
- 16:27Speaker 5: Playing basketball or football.
- 16:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:30Speaker 1: I think that's okay, though I think coaching staff and
- 16:33Speaker 1: Dana is very guilty of it. I think people get
- 16:37Speaker 1: so caught up in getting guys touches, and I get
- 16:41Speaker 1: we live in a little bit of different society where.
- 16:44Speaker 3: You gotta keep them happy, keep them.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Happy, but at the same time, right, if you get
- 16:48Speaker 1: the right guys in your program that are team focused
- 16:51Speaker 1: and not worried about their individual stuff, I know it's
- 16:55Speaker 1: hard if you get the right mindset into your players
- 16:58Speaker 1: that know, we care about the team's performance and the
- 17:00Speaker 1: win and quit worrying about your individual stats and your numbers.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Like I'm saying that because it's not easy to do,
- 17:08Speaker 1: but the right type of players and the good coaches
- 17:11Speaker 1: can get your program to think that way. And I
- 17:15Speaker 1: just think it's it's a little it's kind of an
- 17:17Speaker 1: excuse for saying, well, we got to get this guy
- 17:20Speaker 1: the ball, and go get this guy the ball, and
- 17:21Speaker 1: their reasoning is that, well, it makes it harder regard.
- 17:23Speaker 1: I get that it does when you have multiple guys
- 17:26Speaker 1: that can do multiple things. But if you don't have
- 17:28Speaker 1: the multiple guys, then you don't need to worry about
- 17:30Speaker 1: getting the multiple guys of ball.
- 17:32Speaker 2: And that's why I don't think we need to get
- 17:34Speaker 2: the ball.
- 17:34Speaker 3: To moz And and Nelson, all the people that we
- 17:38Speaker 3: were excited about going into the year.
- 17:40Speaker 1: Like get them the ball, get the get those top
- 17:42Speaker 1: four or five guys of ball, and that's fine. We
- 17:43Speaker 1: don't need to Heiner Harberg, I you know, great, great guy.
- 17:47Speaker 1: We don't need to get him three catches a game.
- 17:49Speaker 5: That why, Like, yeah, it's past past the point is
- 17:52Speaker 5: testing stuff out like you just got to.
- 17:58Speaker 2: It's a belief and you're in what you have.
- 18:00Speaker 6: Yeah, which comes back to again, where's it's been all year?
- 18:03Speaker 6: But we can We'll just be happy this podcast, all right,
- 18:07Speaker 6: great win that we don't not worry about where it's
- 18:09Speaker 6: been all year?
- 18:13Speaker 3: Now?
- 18:15Speaker 1: Yeah, it does. It makes you a little more frustrated.
- 18:19Speaker 1: But to your point, Daca, about you know why we
- 18:26Speaker 1: haven't looked this way and specifically why does it look
- 18:28Speaker 1: so bad at times?
- 18:29Speaker 3: Right?
- 18:30Speaker 1: Part of that's just growth and development throughout a season
- 18:33Speaker 1: as part of it. And yeah, you wish you could
- 18:35Speaker 1: look like you wish you could have your best best
- 18:38Speaker 1: performance in game one. Maybe you don't, but but rule
- 18:41Speaker 1: said it all along. You want to be playing your
- 18:42Speaker 1: best football by the time you get to November. And
- 18:45Speaker 1: that's where we're at. We obviously played, We've got to
- 18:48Speaker 1: win November. Now we have two more opportunities to do that,
- 18:51Speaker 1: so we're learning still. It's also year three to just
- 18:55Speaker 1: to show to show out and perform and prove that
- 19:01Speaker 1: we are taking steps forward, and I think we did.
- 19:04Speaker 6: Also, where where has it been all year? There's there's
- 19:09Speaker 6: one big change of this game and it's the quarterback position.
- 19:13Speaker 3: So let's not act like the twenty eight points has
- 19:17Speaker 3: been untouchable all year. Our offense has not been totally
- 19:19Speaker 3: stigmant all year.
- 19:21Speaker 1: No, No, and that's not what we're we're saying. And
- 19:25Speaker 1: this is not a this is not a Hunter'sarberniki bias offense.
- 19:28Speaker 1: This is a take I have heard from every podcast
- 19:30Speaker 1: that I've listened to recap that our offense this game
- 19:32Speaker 1: was the most efficient, the best flow, everything about it
- 19:37Speaker 1: was better than what we've seen throughout this year so far.
- 19:42Speaker 6: And and there's there's one big reason on that too.
- 19:45Speaker 6: What's kind of killed the offense this year? Zero sacks? Yeah, like, no,
- 19:50Speaker 6: no sacks.
- 19:51Speaker 3: That killing that dr doesn't drop back, you can't get sacked.
- 19:56Speaker 6: Yeah, there's that and that and that's what kills all
- 19:58Speaker 6: these flows of the or all seasons. When Kinley's flows
- 20:01Speaker 6: is usually it felt like a sack of drive at least.
- 20:05Speaker 6: And when you're second and twenty, you can't you're screwed already.
- 20:08Speaker 5: So that's that's you drive.
- 20:11Speaker 3: I mean, we didn't have any penalties, we didn't have.
- 20:14Speaker 1: Any turnovers, clean play calling, we said that was very good.
- 20:19Speaker 1: And yeah, we're we're gonna talk about just a quarterback
- 20:22Speaker 1: play in general. On the Tief and Austin. I'm not
- 20:23Speaker 1: going to argue with you but Te first, Dylan this
- 20:26Speaker 1: whole podcast. But what I am gonna preface is, I
- 20:32Speaker 1: think the underlying reason why things look so good was
- 20:36Speaker 1: having a mobile quarterback with the ability to run.
- 20:40Speaker 2: And there's a lot of reasons behind that.
- 20:44Speaker 1: I'm not saying that TJ should be the exact future
- 20:47Speaker 1: yet for the program. I'm not saying that yet. Now
- 20:50Speaker 1: win our last two games, we can talk after Iowa,
- 20:53Speaker 1: but because it is UCLA, it's the first look at it.
- 20:59Speaker 1: A mobile quarter opens up so many things. And I'm
- 21:03Speaker 1: not saying a run first quarterback either, because we've gone
- 21:05Speaker 1: down that road. We've seen the Jeff Simms, the Heinrich Harberg's,
- 21:09Speaker 1: the Chubb of Purties that can't throw it a lick okay,
- 21:12Speaker 1: and we've seen the mobile complete mobile quarterbacks that doesn't
- 21:15Speaker 1: work either, Okay, But I think the ability to be
- 21:20Speaker 1: mobile in.
- 21:21Speaker 2: The pocket and.
- 21:25Speaker 1: I could and I'm going to list like ten or
- 21:27Speaker 1: fifteen reasons why that opened up our offense this week
- 21:30Speaker 1: and why it helped now again, I want to see
- 21:33Speaker 1: it against Penn State and Iowa too, to believe that
- 21:36Speaker 1: that's our future moving forward. But I do think play
- 21:39Speaker 1: calling is a lot easier. And guess what, we have
- 21:42Speaker 1: a second running back in the backfield now too. That
- 21:46Speaker 1: defenses from a defensive play caller standpoint. When the guy
- 21:50Speaker 1: back there can run and we can flip it on
- 21:52Speaker 1: Nebraska's defense with mobile quarterbacks because we see it on
- 21:54Speaker 1: the other side, it opens up a ton for your
- 21:58Speaker 1: offense as far as what defenses have to scheme and
- 22:01Speaker 1: prepare for. That's that is a I'm not saying the
- 22:04Speaker 1: tea first, Dylan, I'm saying general football. That's a true statement. Yeah, yeah,
- 22:14Speaker 1: what I'm saying happen this week. The big, big reason
- 22:17Speaker 1: why our offense look that way and why we didn't
- 22:20Speaker 1: have to throw it because they couldn't stop a run game.
- 22:24Speaker 2: So in your run game now includes a quarterback.
- 22:28Speaker 1: And a guy that when when every time you come
- 22:30Speaker 1: out there and instead of when you have a zone
- 22:34Speaker 1: reader or handoff and defense can just almost guarantee and
- 22:37Speaker 1: assume the ball's going right there.
- 22:38Speaker 2: To Emmett, you have to now be cautious on what
- 22:41Speaker 2: you're doing. Okay, when you're rushing the passer.
- 22:45Speaker 1: You no longer can just pin your ears back and say, yeah,
- 22:48Speaker 1: let's freaking get to him. You have to put on
- 22:50Speaker 1: contain a little bit and have that hat on, which
- 22:53Speaker 1: again Nebraska has seen that on the defensive side a
- 22:57Speaker 1: whole other thing too.
- 22:58Speaker 2: You this is a concept thing that's also true.
- 23:02Speaker 1: You can't play as much man coverage and just man guys,
- 23:06Speaker 1: what a team's been doing to us.
- 23:08Speaker 2: They've been hatting on hatt in us because they know
- 23:10Speaker 2: Dylan can't run.
- 23:11Speaker 1: Well, guess what when teams man coverage you and you
- 23:13Speaker 1: have a mobile quarterback, and those guys, those dbs and
- 23:15Speaker 1: those safeties, their eyes are not in the backfield at all.
- 23:18Speaker 2: You're focused on a man.
- 23:20Speaker 1: You can't play as much man coverage because that quarterback
- 23:23Speaker 1: when they see man coverage and if they don't have
- 23:25Speaker 1: their first or second read, they go, Okay, well I
- 23:27Speaker 1: got a whole bunch of green ahead of me and
- 23:29Speaker 1: I can do that. All of that stuff is a
- 23:32Speaker 1: concept thing for defensive coordinators that when a guy back
- 23:35Speaker 1: there can run, you're thinking when they can't run, okay,
- 23:39Speaker 1: it's a lot easier to game plan for. And Dylan's
- 23:42Speaker 1: obviously a very elite passer, he's very very good at passing, but.
- 23:48Speaker 2: He can't run. We've we've seen that time and time again,
- 23:51Speaker 2: even though he could.
- 23:53Speaker 5: This game kind of proved it, even though you didn't play,
- 23:55Speaker 5: proved the more he can't run. Like just Dylan didn't
- 23:59Speaker 5: play this game, deck I know, I said, I say,
- 24:02Speaker 5: he didn't play, but it proves out how much he
- 24:05Speaker 5: can't run. If the Kief is having that much running
- 24:08Speaker 5: room and stuff like.
- 24:08Speaker 1: It doesn't prove that Dylan can't run. It We've known
- 24:10Speaker 1: Dylan can't run. It shows that TJ cant run, which we.
- 24:13Speaker 6: Do, yeah, I which we can dive into it. The
- 24:18Speaker 6: main the main difference is between TJ and Dylan is
- 24:23Speaker 6: and I think this is it. Why did the online
- 24:26Speaker 6: look so much better this game.
- 24:29Speaker 2: It's it's like, I'll say one thing, because I UCLA
- 24:33Speaker 2: and their rush defense was the worst. That's I mean
- 24:34Speaker 2: to me, that's a big part of it.
- 24:36Speaker 6: You can throw that in there too, but I think
- 24:38Speaker 6: it's because, like like even saying, the mobile quarterback, you
- 24:43Speaker 6: can't just t off all game and correct.
- 24:45Speaker 1: And I think that that is another big part of
- 24:47Speaker 1: it too. I'm waiting for that to prove the point.
- 24:49Speaker 5: Here, you can't say it as a matter of fact
- 24:52Speaker 5: yet I'm.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Waiting which I'm saying that from just looking at quarterbacks
- 24:56Speaker 1: in general perspectives, Like I do think that's a big
- 25:01Speaker 1: reason we'll see against Penn State Nile and maybe maybe
- 25:03Speaker 1: they'll just tee off on us too, But I think that, Yeah,
- 25:06Speaker 1: adding that element, it just helps your It helps the
- 25:10Speaker 1: entire entirety of the offense. When your quarterback has a
- 25:13Speaker 1: threat to run. That's that is the I listed three.
- 25:18Speaker 1: I couldn't just from a schematic standpoint. There's so much
- 25:22Speaker 1: to it now. Like I said, you can't sacrifice being
- 25:24Speaker 1: able to throw the ball, And.
- 25:27Speaker 3: I think that was the concern. Yeah, I think the
- 25:29Speaker 3: biggest difference this game was they're they're all mostly short passes,
- 25:34Speaker 3: they're all within you know, they're all basically under fifteen yards.
- 25:38Speaker 3: Even our big passes were basically broken out plays create
- 25:42Speaker 3: you know, Emma Johnson is a big screenplay. And it
- 25:46Speaker 3: was basically if TJ, if his first tread wasn't there,
- 25:48Speaker 3: he's going. Whereas Dylan he he takes a little bit
- 25:51Speaker 3: more time, his first thread's not there. He waits, he
- 25:53Speaker 3: looks for a second read. What's back to his first.
- 25:55Speaker 2: Read'st to me is that works?
- 25:58Speaker 5: Right?
- 25:59Speaker 3: That you only have there, you only had to run
- 26:01Speaker 3: it five times.
- 26:03Speaker 1: And that's what we're creating, is that that part works. Guys,
- 26:08Speaker 1: we're giving Dylan. We've gave Dylan the reins to I
- 26:11Speaker 1: mean we said and the reins to run it like
- 26:13Speaker 1: an NFL quarterback, right like sometimes you don't need to
- 26:17Speaker 1: overdo it and and over complicate it, like give them
- 26:21Speaker 1: a couple of reads and if it's not there like
- 26:23Speaker 1: running and it opens up what we what what were
- 26:26Speaker 1: a lot of our passes.
- 26:27Speaker 2: On this game play action and screens?
- 26:31Speaker 1: Well, guess what when you when you when you have
- 26:34Speaker 1: a mobile quarterback and you can get him outside the pocket.
- 26:36Speaker 1: We've I've even said it, we need to get Dylan
- 26:38Speaker 1: outside the pocket more like yeap. When you do that,
- 26:43Speaker 1: it opens things up and the ability to run. But
- 26:45Speaker 1: if we're scared of Dylan getting hurt, if whatever that
- 26:48Speaker 1: reason is, we don't. We have not shown to do
- 26:51Speaker 1: that under Dylan. Now, maybe Dana was going to do
- 26:54Speaker 1: it with Dylan if you was healthy. I you know,
- 26:56Speaker 1: obviously you have the teeth this week. That's why our
- 26:58Speaker 1: passing game was I mean, he didn't miss a pass
- 27:00Speaker 1: for a long time, and yeah they were easy throws.
- 27:03Speaker 1: But that's how to play football and win. In my
- 27:06Speaker 1: mind that you don't how many fades did we throw?
- 27:11Speaker 5: No, thank god, I don't know. There.
- 27:14Speaker 2: We didn't have to.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Now maybe games we're gonna have to, but not not
- 27:18Speaker 1: not if you ever, if the game script goes like
- 27:20Speaker 1: that in every game. I'm not saying it will, but
- 27:23Speaker 1: it definitely could. Like you don't, that's how that's that's
- 27:27Speaker 1: that's how I always played for years and and they
- 27:30Speaker 1: win nine ten games every year, as Wisconsin used to play.
- 27:33Speaker 2: That's how Minnesota plays like that.
- 27:36Speaker 1: That to me is how you have to play to start,
- 27:38Speaker 1: and a lot of all this is the base of
- 27:39Speaker 1: an offensive line. We we have just tried to I
- 27:43Speaker 1: think we've tried to overcomplicate stuff with Dylan a lot,
- 27:46Speaker 1: and that's been when our offense looks mucky. That's why
- 27:50Speaker 1: now it's looked good. It's looked good at times too,
- 27:52Speaker 1: but it has not looked this well flown flow through
- 27:56Speaker 1: an entire game. And I just think adding that mobilequarterback
- 28:00Speaker 1: is a huge piece of that. It's it's the number
- 28:03Speaker 1: one reason that that flow happened.
- 28:09Speaker 3: But probably those number two. Number one is the worst defense,
- 28:13Speaker 3: one of the worst defense is in a big ten.
- 28:15Speaker 2: And that's and that's why I'm caveating it. You gotta
- 28:18Speaker 2: I gotta see it still for more games before before
- 28:21Speaker 2: my mind.
- 28:22Speaker 3: If it works against Penn State and Iowa, then you
- 28:25Speaker 3: have like I mean, it works against in Iowa. That's
- 28:27Speaker 3: the one where it's like, man, okay, correct, this is something.
- 28:31Speaker 6: Can you can you agree with me on this, Austin,
- 28:33Speaker 6: though I think counter does with this offensive line, with
- 28:36Speaker 6: how bad it is, the chief is the better option
- 28:39Speaker 6: than no.
- 28:41Speaker 3: I disagree. I think we didn't have to pass the
- 28:48Speaker 3: ball this game. In a game where we need to
- 28:50Speaker 3: pass the ball, I'd rather have we.
- 28:53Speaker 2: So this is the give and take to what you're saying, Austin.
- 28:56Speaker 2: I agree.
- 28:59Speaker 1: The give and take is and I'm I like scales.
- 29:02Speaker 1: I like putting on a scale of one to one hundred,
- 29:04Speaker 1: Dylan's probably a as far as a college quarterback, He's
- 29:08Speaker 1: probably in the eighties or nineties. On a passing from
- 29:11Speaker 1: a from just a accuracy, arm, talent, all of that,
- 29:17Speaker 1: Dylan's probably an eighty to ninety. I would say his
- 29:19Speaker 1: rushing on a scale of zero to one hundred is
- 29:22Speaker 1: a for to all quarterbacks in college football.
- 29:24Speaker 2: I'd give it a.
- 29:25Speaker 3: Ten ten, yeah, ten to twenty somewhere around TJ.
- 29:29Speaker 1: I'd say right now, his ability to run from all
- 29:31Speaker 1: quarterbacks in college football is in the seventies probably is
- 29:36Speaker 1: where I would put him.
- 29:37Speaker 3: I haven't seen him running.
- 29:38Speaker 2: From what we've seen.
- 29:39Speaker 3: That's where I've seen him against the high seventies, and
- 29:42Speaker 3: then he ran it four five times this game, you know,
- 29:45Speaker 3: and I'm putting it.
- 29:47Speaker 2: I'm putting in seven seven to eight, seventy to eighty.
- 29:49Speaker 1: I would say is passing again for the same reason
- 29:53Speaker 1: we don't know, like we haven't seen him be tested.
- 29:55Speaker 1: I think I'm gonna I'm gonna believe right now, I'm
- 29:58Speaker 1: gonna put him in around the fifty mar I don't
- 30:00Speaker 1: know that. But if Austin is one person to believe
- 30:02Speaker 1: that he's, you know, a horrible passer and he's like
- 30:05Speaker 1: Jeff Simms and he's like a ten or fifteen passing.
- 30:08Speaker 3: Same No, but I'm saying if that's if that's what
- 30:10Speaker 3: you think, Okay.
- 30:12Speaker 1: If that's what you think, and some people think that
- 30:14Speaker 1: he's a horrible pass world, then I can easily see well.
- 30:16Speaker 2: Yeah, no, We've tried the running quarterback thing. It doesn't work.
- 30:19Speaker 1: I'm thinking that it's better to have a quarterback in
- 30:24Speaker 1: a game like this, like Latif, who is not a
- 30:26Speaker 1: horrible passer, but he's got a very very He's worse
- 30:31Speaker 1: than Dylan for sure passing, but he's way better than
- 30:34Speaker 1: him at running the ball. It just your offense is
- 30:37Speaker 1: going to look a lot better than back to your
- 30:39Speaker 1: point with this offensive line one hundred percent, with an
- 30:43Speaker 1: average to below average offensive line, having a quarterback that
- 30:46Speaker 1: can run.
- 30:48Speaker 3: Is I agree with that much. But I just don't
- 30:52Speaker 3: think most of the next games we're not gonna get
- 30:54Speaker 3: twenty eight to seven in the third quarter. Like I know,
- 30:57Speaker 3: it's the perfect game, I don't think so. As And
- 31:01Speaker 3: when the fourth quarter came around and started to get
- 31:03Speaker 3: a little bit tighter and they had to make him
- 31:04Speaker 3: pass a couple of times, that's when they started missing passes.
- 31:08Speaker 2: And that's what we'll see next couple of games.
- 31:12Speaker 1: Right, But when it wasn't, I would I'll be curious, Austin,
- 31:15Speaker 1: what if we are What if we're up twenty one
- 31:17Speaker 1: to seven on Penn State in the third quarter.
- 31:20Speaker 3: And then then it's a different conversation. I'm not going
- 31:23Speaker 3: to take Yeah, like I said, the only grane at
- 31:25Speaker 3: five times is against one of the worst rushing defenses
- 31:28Speaker 3: in the league. And when when they weren't second and
- 31:32Speaker 3: four every down is that he had to start passing
- 31:34Speaker 3: the ball and it started to looking a little different.
- 31:37Speaker 1: You've you've pulled up the brand of five times. I
- 31:40Speaker 1: I know stats are something, but.
- 31:43Speaker 3: I understand you're gonna I know you're gonna say perception.
- 31:45Speaker 3: They have the game plan for him to run and
- 31:48Speaker 3: he didn't have to run.
- 31:50Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, no.
- 31:51Speaker 1: The perception of his ability to run, regardless of how
- 31:56Speaker 1: many times he ran, the fact that he can run.
- 31:58Speaker 1: And I mean that you see, like I knew he
- 32:00Speaker 1: could run going into the game. It's not like they thought,
- 32:02Speaker 1: I don't know, can this back? No, No, they knew
- 32:04Speaker 1: he was a better runner than Pastor. They knew that
- 32:07Speaker 1: going into the game. That perception, regardless of how many
- 32:10Speaker 1: attempts he had, that ability, I think helped the flow
- 32:14Speaker 1: of our offense. And so I yes, I you maybe
- 32:17Speaker 1: aren't as high on Maybe you're not at seventy or
- 32:19Speaker 1: eighty on him and running.
- 32:21Speaker 3: I've seen him do it against a good team. Yet
- 32:23Speaker 3: in a way like I mean UCLA's quarterback had how
- 32:26Speaker 3: many yards? Ninety yards on fifteen carries, you know, like
- 32:31Speaker 3: that's a sample like that's a good sample size for
- 32:34Speaker 3: me to be like, Okay, yeah, that dude can run.
- 32:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I'll say this, this is maybe a
- 32:40Speaker 1: hot topic. I would take an Ico in a heartbeat
- 32:44Speaker 1: next year.
- 32:45Speaker 5: WHOA, Okay, I I think that's like it's I think.
- 32:52Speaker 3: No, I don't. I think that's not.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Nico to me is a better TJ right now more
- 32:56Speaker 1: I shouldn't say better, a more proven TJ.
- 32:59Speaker 2: He's a more.
- 32:59Speaker 3: Proven I agree with that.
- 33:01Speaker 5: Okay, yeah, I'm more proven.
- 33:03Speaker 1: And TJ could end up being Nico potentially, like we
- 33:08Speaker 1: don't know that, but that he's not. Nico's got the
- 33:10Speaker 1: stature two of it.
- 33:11Speaker 2: That's the thing.
- 33:12Speaker 5: Like I'm just not high on Nico. I'm I'm not.
- 33:15Speaker 3: I do not think.
- 33:17Speaker 5: I do not think.
- 33:17Speaker 1: I will say this dact though you like you would
- 33:20Speaker 1: take TJ or Nico right now, right now, Jason, what you've.
- 33:23Speaker 5: Seen going in next season?
- 33:25Speaker 2: Yes, yep, yeah, I wouldn't.
- 33:28Speaker 3: I would.
- 33:29Speaker 2: I wouldn't do.
- 33:30Speaker 5: That, which which which that's probably hard to take them.
- 33:32Speaker 5: What you just said, but.
- 33:32Speaker 3: That Houston Christian game really really sticks to him.
- 33:36Speaker 5: I'm just not. I just don't think Nico is that
- 33:37Speaker 5: good as a pastor. I don't.
- 33:39Speaker 2: And you think t J t J is, I get
- 33:41Speaker 2: I guess you could.
- 33:41Speaker 1: I guess you can as a as a fan and
- 33:43Speaker 1: a podcast you can just assume that he is without
- 33:45Speaker 1: seeing it and you can do that.
- 33:47Speaker 5: You know, podcast. Yeah, TJ is a better pastor than
- 33:50Speaker 5: Ko and that that.
- 33:53Speaker 1: You're right, it's still a lot proven and again we
- 33:55Speaker 1: can talk about next year all we want. I've heard
- 33:57Speaker 1: people have gone down that path, and that's what fans
- 33:59Speaker 1: are going to do. It's already going down. I've heard
- 34:03Speaker 1: someone say like t J Latif is the future Nebraska
- 34:08Speaker 1: and I'm gonna say and he's like, I'm gonna say
- 34:10Speaker 1: it because I can and I'm overreacting after one game,
- 34:14Speaker 1: but I'm gonna say it, and I'm not there.
- 34:18Speaker 5: Could he be Yes, what's your now? I don't know
- 34:23Speaker 5: if this was just Saturday talk, what's your what's your main? Ow?
- 34:28Speaker 6: I gonna says, what does Dylan have to do for
- 34:32Speaker 6: you to to have to be the quarterback next year?
- 34:35Speaker 5: Nebraska?
- 34:35Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 34:38Speaker 3: I don't think it's what does Dylan have to do?
- 34:39Speaker 3: It's what does TJ not have to do?
- 34:42Speaker 2: T A little bit, a little bit of it.
- 34:44Speaker 3: You're gonna be all in on TJ. But if TJ
- 34:46Speaker 3: comes out has three fumbles, you know, in the next
- 34:50Speaker 3: three games and three interceptions, and we lose both games
- 34:54Speaker 3: by seven or more points because our offense can't move
- 34:56Speaker 3: because he can't pass the.
- 34:57Speaker 5: Ball, and yeah, then then there's no players.
- 35:01Speaker 3: Have it returns to earth.
- 35:02Speaker 1: I've a I talked to Jackson this morning and he
- 35:06Speaker 1: made a good point. He said, do you think Dylan
- 35:08Speaker 1: watches that game and goes a little bit like, huh,
- 35:11Speaker 1: Like that's what they want me to do? Like I
- 35:14Speaker 1: can do that like from just that.
- 35:18Speaker 3: Oh for sure. If he's like, if that's what you're
- 35:20Speaker 3: gonna like he because he can hit all of those
- 35:22Speaker 3: passes that.
- 35:23Speaker 1: Well, right, if that's the philosophy, which I love that
- 35:26Speaker 1: philosophy of how we played, if Dylan does, do you
- 35:32Speaker 1: think Dylan, I hope Dylan watches that game and goes, Man,
- 35:35Speaker 1: if I can just be more mobile, that was our
- 35:40Speaker 1: offense can be really freaking Like, I hope he's.
- 35:42Speaker 2: Looking at that, and I hope I hope Dane a rule.
- 35:44Speaker 1: I hope they all look at that and go, no, Dylan,
- 35:48Speaker 1: you need to lose twenty twenty five pounds next for
- 35:50Speaker 1: next year. And to me, if Dylan does that, I texted,
- 35:53Speaker 1: I Canmera texted you guys, I think I did. Dylan
- 35:55Speaker 1: will be a Heisman Trophy front runner in my mind
- 35:59Speaker 1: if he loses twenty twenty five pounds and is able
- 36:01Speaker 1: to move. I'm not saying like Latif, but like move
- 36:04Speaker 1: from a ten to twenty in that scale of one
- 36:06Speaker 1: hundred to like a forty. Okay, Dylan will be such
- 36:09Speaker 1: an elite quarterback, elite, elite, elite in college football if
- 36:13Speaker 1: he doesn't. And we thought he was gonna do that
- 36:15Speaker 1: this year, we thought we were told he looks better.
- 36:17Speaker 2: Yeah, he's he.
- 36:19Speaker 1: Moved from a from a zero two in the pocket
- 36:24Speaker 1: to a three, from being able to be a lousive,
- 36:26Speaker 1: it's got it got better. But like this much it
- 36:31Speaker 1: like that that to me should hopefully be obvious to them.
- 36:34Speaker 1: But but what I'm scared of is if Latif looks
- 36:37Speaker 1: eh and man, we lose our last two games, maybe
- 36:41Speaker 1: we go win our bowl game. Like We're obviously gonna
- 36:43Speaker 1: stick with Dylan and we're going to roll him back
- 36:45Speaker 1: out and as is when I think there's a little
- 36:49Speaker 1: bit of hopefully signs that know, having good and bad
- 36:53Speaker 1: from earlier in the year of not having a mobile
- 36:55Speaker 1: quarterback to seeing maybe what some mobility can do to
- 37:00Speaker 1: an offense. Hopefully that's a sign. And do we take
- 37:02Speaker 1: an initiative on that with Dylan. I Dylan in his
- 37:06Speaker 1: current stature in state and Dak you made a great point,
- 37:09Speaker 1: he's gonna be in a freaking cast.
- 37:11Speaker 5: And yeah, all I'm gonna say is not do shit
- 37:13Speaker 5: really easy?
- 37:14Speaker 1: How long?
- 37:15Speaker 5: Really easy to put on Dylan, if you're listening, really
- 37:17Speaker 5: easy to put on weight when you're in a cast.
- 37:19Speaker 5: So I'm just saying, don't eat, don't eat, beat k
- 37:22Speaker 5: McDonald's all that way you're walking in this cast, like,
- 37:24Speaker 5: eat healthy. From experience, it's really easy. You can put
- 37:30Speaker 5: on seventy Patin's real quick in a cast. So so
- 37:33Speaker 5: just be careful for the next six weeks or however
- 37:35Speaker 5: long you're in a cast. Eat healthy.
- 37:39Speaker 1: And I also heard people talking about Dana saying Dana
- 37:43Speaker 1: is much more comfortable with a dual threat quarterback because
- 37:45Speaker 1: that's what he's used to and he likes to call
- 37:48Speaker 1: plays that way, and part of me is, I maybe
- 37:51Speaker 1: you agree with that. But what what's weird is there's
- 37:57Speaker 1: a fine line of building your offense around Dylan because
- 38:00Speaker 1: of Dylan's skill set and capabilities. And I think that's
- 38:03Speaker 1: what Dana has been trying to do. And then now
- 38:06Speaker 1: you have a different set of skill set quarterback, so
- 38:09Speaker 1: now you do something different. I don't think that there's
- 38:12Speaker 1: a that this was Dana's offense. This is what Dana's
- 38:15Speaker 1: offense looks like. We said that with Dylan too. I
- 38:18Speaker 1: think it's just your ability to adjust with the type
- 38:20Speaker 1: of quarterback you have back there. We just look so
- 38:22Speaker 1: much more comfortable this week because of all those things
- 38:26Speaker 1: that said earlier, with a with a with a mobile quarterback,
- 38:29Speaker 1: and I think that helps. It just adds another element
- 38:32Speaker 1: to your offense and in numerous ways. And Dylan doesn't
- 38:37Speaker 1: have that yet, but I hope it opens some brain
- 38:41Speaker 1: cells that, man, we need to have a little bit more.
- 38:45Speaker 1: Or on the flip side, spend five to ten million
- 38:48Speaker 1: on offensive linemen because I think Dylan would be a
- 38:52Speaker 1: Dylan would be in the Heisman Trophy frontrunner list too
- 38:55Speaker 1: if he played for Alabama.
- 38:57Speaker 2: And or Georgia and or some he would he would
- 39:01Speaker 2: be because we don't.
- 39:02Speaker 1: We're not we're gonna have one the line, but to
- 39:04Speaker 1: the skill players around him for that, that's.
- 39:07Speaker 2: What we have right now.
- 39:08Speaker 1: And so that's where I'm like, I don't, I don't
- 39:11Speaker 1: know like our current offensive line State and Dylan and
- 39:14Speaker 1: it's not it's not here, it's not meshed.
- 39:17Speaker 2: And that that answers what kind of your question earlier
- 39:20Speaker 2: to me and how I feel about that.
- 39:23Speaker 1: But again, Penn State in Iowa are gonna tell us
- 39:27Speaker 1: a lot too, because there are two programs that are.
- 39:31Speaker 5: Right. Yeah, I was scary, I will can we all
- 39:36Speaker 5: agree on this right now?
- 39:37Speaker 6: Like I've asked a couple of things, I don't think anyway,
- 39:40Speaker 6: come out, come out of game. There's no shot hell
- 39:43Speaker 6: both these Dylan and Lookie from the roster next year, right.
- 39:48Speaker 3: I wouldn't say no shot in hell, but I had
- 39:50Speaker 3: the same thought. I was like, if TJ comes out
- 39:53Speaker 3: looks good, one of those probably transferring.
- 39:57Speaker 1: Yeah, even if doesn't look good the last two games,
- 40:01Speaker 1: I still think it's going to be hard to retain
- 40:04Speaker 1: a guy like That's I'm sorry, you can't.
- 40:09Speaker 2: You can't spend a ship ton of money on two quarterbacks.
- 40:12Speaker 1: No, go spend it on offensive lineman for sus spending
- 40:15Speaker 1: it on two quarterbacks.
- 40:16Speaker 6: And there's other reasons too why I can't. Not just
- 40:18Speaker 6: money wise, you can't. You can't just have two quarterbacks
- 40:21Speaker 6: like that. And you can't be.
- 40:23Speaker 3: Paying a guy.
- 40:23Speaker 2: You can't be paying a guy two million dollars send
- 40:25Speaker 2: the bench.
- 40:26Speaker 6: No, And people are me calling for the other person's name,
- 40:28Speaker 6: all like, you just can't have that.
- 40:30Speaker 1: So you're right, I don't know where this will go
- 40:34Speaker 1: next year. And then, like I said, I don't want
- 40:36Speaker 1: to speculate, but I just think it's going to be
- 40:38Speaker 1: hard to pay. Then you talk about paying Emmett, which
- 40:40Speaker 1: I think that could be a lost cause, but.
- 40:42Speaker 3: You never know.
- 40:45Speaker 1: And then paying coordinators and paying I think I'm paying
- 40:48Speaker 1: offensive lineman. That's to me still most important thing.
- 40:52Speaker 3: And then we have.
- 40:54Speaker 2: So that But that to me is where rule is right.
- 40:58Speaker 2: And he sees it.
- 40:59Speaker 1: He's talked about the four forty million dollars roster in
- 41:01Speaker 1: the extra. He sees all that, and he knows that
- 41:04Speaker 1: you need that kind of capital to compete with the
- 41:08Speaker 1: top of the top and the best of the best,
- 41:09Speaker 1: which I'm glad he still is seeing that vision and
- 41:12Speaker 1: thinking of that vision, because that that's where we want
- 41:14Speaker 1: to get to.
- 41:14Speaker 2: That's what that's glory.
- 41:18Speaker 3: Will add. We haven't talked about it at all, but
- 41:22Speaker 3: it's a good thing. I got a twenty eight to
- 41:24Speaker 3: seven because our defense did not look great. Basically, it
- 41:29Speaker 3: just didn't look great. They weren't bad, they were fine.
- 41:33Speaker 5: Yeah they yeah, Okay, I say yeah.
- 41:36Speaker 3: But if they you know, if UCLA has one more
- 41:40Speaker 3: you know on that fourth and one where they called
- 41:43Speaker 3: that weird run play instead of just running it up
- 41:45Speaker 3: the middle, it becomes it's a different conversation. So you're
- 41:49Speaker 3: not talking about You're still the offense still looks good,
- 41:51Speaker 3: but then you're talking on something else. Yep.
- 41:55Speaker 2: Defense has been a weird conversation too. I I I don't.
- 42:00Speaker 1: I don't have actually too many strong opinions of it,
- 42:02Speaker 1: which is why we haven't talked about it yet. I've
- 42:06Speaker 1: heard people that like our callers after the game, calling
- 42:11Speaker 1: for John Butler's head even after that game and think
- 42:13Speaker 1: he's think he's not that far and then and then
- 42:16Speaker 1: I've heard the opposite of give John Butler all the
- 42:21Speaker 1: credit in the world, and he's one of the top
- 42:24Speaker 1: defensive or one of the top coordinators in the Big Ten.
- 42:26Speaker 1: I mean, I've heard such a spectrum of what people
- 42:29Speaker 1: think of John Butler in this defense.
- 42:32Speaker 6: That right down the middle, right down the middle of
- 42:34Speaker 6: what you just said, Yeah.
- 42:36Speaker 1: It's fun, I mean that it's fanned, it's overreacting to
- 42:39Speaker 1: it all. It's some people think that he's horrible at adjusting.
- 42:42Speaker 1: Some people think that because we've held eight straight opponents
- 42:47Speaker 1: I think it was eight or nine under maybe it
- 42:49Speaker 1: was more in that I don't even know what the
- 42:50Speaker 1: statu is under four hundred yards of total offense. Like
- 42:55Speaker 1: people said, that's the first time we've done that since
- 42:57Speaker 1: like nine I think in that deep or O ten
- 42:59Speaker 1: or ten with suit and those guys like that's also
- 43:03Speaker 1: people are pointing out the positive.
- 43:05Speaker 3: I don't they said, it's just something like it started
- 43:10Speaker 3: to look a little sour there at the end with
- 43:12Speaker 3: the yeah.
- 43:14Speaker 2: There's there's good.
- 43:15Speaker 1: There's a lot of good things like, but yeah, there's
- 43:20Speaker 1: And Butler said this after or maybe before the Cincinnati game,
- 43:26Speaker 1: about making sores be a look like a high school quarterback,
- 43:29Speaker 1: which is what Nico ended up being. By the end
- 43:30Speaker 1: of that game, it just it was all right, like
- 43:34Speaker 1: go try Nico, go try to win you that game
- 43:36Speaker 1: running it for like being just a stud, and he
- 43:39Speaker 1: tried to and he did, had a lot of obviously
- 43:42Speaker 1: good first down runs and making our tacklers look stupid
- 43:46Speaker 1: at times. But at the same time, he never broke one.
- 43:49Speaker 1: He never made elite plays where it won on the game.
- 43:53Speaker 2: So it it.
- 43:54Speaker 1: Just was a yeah, it got closer than you would
- 43:57Speaker 1: have liked it to. A couple of those drives were
- 43:59Speaker 1: like four team play. The one drive I think was
- 44:01Speaker 1: a fourteen playing ninety six yard drive.
- 44:03Speaker 3: And I came long just of the year for you
- 44:06Speaker 3: to like UCLA's too. Longest drives of the year were
- 44:08Speaker 3: in the second half.
- 44:10Speaker 1: Maybe it was Michigan that had a ninety eight yard
- 44:12Speaker 1: drive or someone early on, I can't remember who it
- 44:14Speaker 1: was in Big Ten play, like those things go a
- 44:17Speaker 1: little bit like like you wish.
- 44:19Speaker 3: That would happen.
- 44:21Speaker 5: Yeah, I didn't walk out that game's thing, John Butler
- 44:23Speaker 5: should be fire. That's didn't either.
- 44:26Speaker 3: I just it's just an interesting like when UCLA called
- 44:29Speaker 3: that terrible fourth in one was because they were moving
- 44:31Speaker 3: the ball really well and they called some weird not
- 44:36Speaker 3: r like if they had just ran out of the middle,
- 44:38Speaker 3: they probably would have gotten it because they were just
- 44:39Speaker 3: moving it on us at e With these I was
- 44:42Speaker 3: just like, man, if they get this, I think they're
- 44:44Speaker 3: probably going to go down and score because they're pretty
- 44:47Speaker 3: freaking close. And then I think gets tight. Then that's
- 44:50Speaker 3: when your freshman quarterback gets put in a position where
- 44:53Speaker 3: they has to do something and he hadn't had to
- 44:55Speaker 3: do anything yet. Yeah, it all worked out, that's all hypothetical.
- 44:58Speaker 3: But I was just like, yeah, it's just a weird
- 45:01Speaker 3: feeling with the defense where it's like, I don't feel
- 45:03Speaker 3: good about you, but I don't have a reason to
- 45:05Speaker 3: feel bad about you yet.
- 45:07Speaker 6: But I'm I'm not sol long John Butler, I don't.
- 45:10Speaker 3: I won't say. I'm like, I'm not saying he's perfect,
- 45:14Speaker 3: but I can't. It's tough to criticize the defense when
- 45:17Speaker 3: you you're seven and three and yeah, you know, one
- 45:21Speaker 3: of those losses was definitely an offensive and UCLA you
- 45:24Speaker 3: held the best offense in the country relatively, You're sorry,
- 45:28Speaker 3: USC and then you know the Minnesota game, your offense
- 45:31Speaker 3: was absolutely abysmal. So I was like, well, it's not
- 45:35Speaker 3: really the defensive Bault, but guys, they don't make it
- 45:38Speaker 3: easy easy. I don't know, it's just interesting.
- 45:41Speaker 1: Here's what I still think is the core why Let's
- 45:46Speaker 1: say this our defense last game against USC. From number perspective,
- 45:50Speaker 1: you mentioned the number one offense, I pretty damn good
- 45:54Speaker 1: performance just from overall this game. You know, again, not glamorous,
- 46:00Speaker 1: but not horrible like I thought we can. We played
- 46:06Speaker 1: their receivers very well. Quarterback run game obviously was still
- 46:13Speaker 1: an issue. But I thought overall again, okay, where I
- 46:17Speaker 1: just still think the problem wise is same with the offense,
- 46:21Speaker 1: is upfront plugging the holes and guess what, Penn State
- 46:25Speaker 1: and Iowa are going to try to exploit that to
- 46:27Speaker 1: the death, just like Minnesota did.
- 46:29Speaker 2: And that's where do we have an answer for that?
- 46:33Speaker 2: Like U, C, l A and USC aren't those type
- 46:35Speaker 2: of teams, so that maybe is why it's looked the
- 46:40Speaker 2: way it did. Michigan State and Northwestern want to.
- 46:44Speaker 1: Be Iowa's and Penn State's type of office, but they're
- 46:48Speaker 1: not quite as good at it. So we're able to
- 46:50Speaker 1: do enough to win those games. Minnesota obviously broke that barrier. Uh,
- 46:56Speaker 1: Penn State and Iowa, we're going to see a team
- 46:58Speaker 1: like that again, So that to me is where the
- 47:00Speaker 1: problem lies. And I think that just comes down to
- 47:02Speaker 1: a lack of having a like, who's who is our
- 47:05Speaker 1: best defensive player right now?
- 47:08Speaker 2: Do you have an answer?
- 47:10Speaker 3: I mean, sire right.
- 47:12Speaker 1: Maybe that's what's hard is you don't there's not a
- 47:19Speaker 1: clear cut answer. There's no one vocal point Singleton. I
- 47:23Speaker 1: don't know, like it's hard to it's hard to say.
- 47:27Speaker 1: And in the past few years or when your defense
- 47:30Speaker 1: is really good, guess what you can name who your
- 47:32Speaker 1: best players and guess where they play.
- 47:35Speaker 3: The defensive line.
- 47:37Speaker 2: So that to me is where it's that's the issue
- 47:42Speaker 2: right now.
- 47:43Speaker 1: And and I think myself included, I was out of
- 47:46Speaker 1: any of us three, I thought Riley van Poppa was
- 47:48Speaker 1: going to be that dude to step up and impress people.
- 47:53Speaker 1: He really hasn't.
- 47:56Speaker 3: It's Zack or how do you pronounce the name.
- 47:59Speaker 2: The pitch shock? However you say, yeah, Pinchock.
- 48:03Speaker 3: I don't. I'm not from a Polish area of Nebraska.
- 48:07Speaker 3: He looks really good last couple of games.
- 48:10Speaker 1: Yes, and we've had some other guys step and Dylan
- 48:13Speaker 1: George came in and played some big minutes of this
- 48:17Speaker 1: game as well. Uh So, we've had some different faces.
- 48:20Speaker 1: I think that's just because I think we're we're trying
- 48:22Speaker 1: to find guys that can do that job and do
- 48:24Speaker 1: it well. Elijah Judy's been there, but it's not like
- 48:28Speaker 1: he's been Williams is still to me too tiny and
- 48:33Speaker 1: small and like he's not big enough yet.
- 48:36Speaker 2: So we are young, and I'm not We're not gonna
- 48:39Speaker 2: make that an excuse.
- 48:40Speaker 1: But at the same time, that's the missing part of
- 48:44Speaker 1: the defense.
- 48:47Speaker 5: Up front.
- 48:47Speaker 6: So uh, I got I got a little bit on Ucla.
- 48:55Speaker 6: Don't you go, Jack, Don't you guys feel horrible for
- 48:58Speaker 6: all those fans that UCLA have after that loss like
- 49:02Speaker 6: we had.
- 49:03Speaker 3: They're having a good time. They knew what they were therefore,
- 49:05Speaker 3: like honestly, like they were down twenty eight to seven
- 49:07Speaker 3: and they were still out there having a good time.
- 49:09Speaker 6: But all those the ball, all those five thousand fans
- 49:13Speaker 6: they had.
- 49:16Speaker 1: I don't know what the final tally was, but I
- 49:18Speaker 1: think you can say with certainly there were more Nebraska
- 49:21Speaker 1: fans in UCLA.
- 49:22Speaker 6: It was the most attended game I saw, which which
- 49:25Speaker 6: is insane because that was like half full.
- 49:28Speaker 1: But I think they got somewhere in the fifty thousands
- 49:31Speaker 1: is what I heard, And I mean think the estimated
- 49:33Speaker 1: was that twenty five thousand Nebraska fans there.
- 49:35Speaker 2: My uncle was at the game.
- 49:36Speaker 1: You said ten minutes before the game, there were probably
- 49:38Speaker 1: fifteen to twenty thousand in there, and fifteen thousand win
- 49:42Speaker 1: Nebraska fans like so obviously UCLA fans filled in, and
- 49:47Speaker 1: I think you just see that with some of those
- 49:49Speaker 1: that they have so much other stuff going on, and
- 49:52Speaker 1: when you don't, when you're mediocre to blow average, you did,
- 49:56Speaker 1: you don't care. Obviously, Nebraska fans, we know how we
- 50:00Speaker 1: how we are and I don't think anybody surprised.
- 50:03Speaker 2: That's the way the stadium looked. It's it's still cool,
- 50:07Speaker 2: it's still meat every time you see it, but it's
- 50:09Speaker 2: not a surprise anymore that that's what happens on those games.
- 50:14Speaker 6: Yeah, that I would like to give a shout out
- 50:17Speaker 6: to the UCLA care team. Very good performance out there.
- 50:22Speaker 1: There's one snap oh it was our first touchdown that
- 50:25Speaker 1: Daklory Barney review.
- 50:28Speaker 2: It is just drooling over over the backdrop.
- 50:32Speaker 5: Of the Rosebull. Yeah.
- 50:36Speaker 1: So yeah, we have a bye week now, which I
- 50:40Speaker 1: think is you know, it's a good time to reset
- 50:43Speaker 1: and two games left, get healthy, try to get fresh
- 50:47Speaker 1: with as much as we can to go give our
- 50:49Speaker 1: last two games our best shot.
- 50:52Speaker 2: We said the past couple of episodes, we were kind.
- 50:54Speaker 1: Of looking at games and chunks and you know, after
- 50:56Speaker 1: that Minnesota game, are specifically going into the us USC.
- 51:00Speaker 2: I think I wanted to win three or four. Like
- 51:03Speaker 2: that's still on the table, even though we didn't beat
- 51:05Speaker 2: USC last week or two weeks ago. It's still there.
- 51:09Speaker 1: And you know, if you want to believe and have
- 51:11Speaker 1: a lot of faith that, like myself, that a running
- 51:13Speaker 1: quarterback can do that trick against better teams, then I have.
- 51:18Speaker 1: I'm excited for those two games. You know, it makes it.
- 51:24Speaker 1: Let's just say this, it's the most tuned in to
- 51:27Speaker 1: Husker football that I think all of us have been
- 51:30Speaker 1: because we have seven wins in November. Yeah, even though
- 51:36Speaker 1: there's no playoff implications, there obviously are some bowl games
- 51:40Speaker 1: where we even talked about at all.
- 51:42Speaker 2: And I heard some other podcasts talking about the locations,
- 51:47Speaker 2: which we'll get into at some point, but it's it's
- 51:50Speaker 2: a conversation that we can enjoy because we haven't had
- 51:53Speaker 2: that since this podcast has existed.
- 51:56Speaker 5: The locations. I've been here and it sounded like a
- 51:58Speaker 5: fun time.
- 52:01Speaker 2: I've heard like three or four. Which one are you
- 52:02Speaker 2: referring to?
- 52:03Speaker 5: Vegas, Nashville?
- 52:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I've heard Vegas, Nashville, Tampa.
- 52:10Speaker 6: So other than that all around, but for well, well,
- 52:16Speaker 6: you were just gonna say, like, great, great weekend all
- 52:17Speaker 6: around for Nebraska sports.
- 52:19Speaker 3: That's true. We won volleyball, basketball, women's basketball, bristling.
- 52:24Speaker 1: What I was saying a big missed opportunity on Nebraska
- 52:28Speaker 1: athletics to have an all day experience at PBA starting
- 52:33Speaker 1: at noon ending at the end of the football game
- 52:36Speaker 1: between men's basketball, volleyball, women's basketball football. I have said
- 52:42Speaker 1: that during the basketball game that we went to and
- 52:44Speaker 1: I was like, man, this could have been a hell
- 52:46Speaker 1: of a day here, and you could. You could have
- 52:48Speaker 1: brought in some like food vendors and some different things
- 52:51Speaker 1: and different events and made it made it an all
- 52:54Speaker 1: day thing. Now, you don't know the times of all
- 52:56Speaker 1: those games early in advance, so there's probably some coordination things,
- 53:00Speaker 1: but it was. It was a very good weekend. Basketball
- 53:03Speaker 1: team cupboard again on Saturday against Florida International.
- 53:09Speaker 6: You know what screwed I'm gonna say about basketball team
- 53:12Speaker 6: because because you're not sold them yet I want to
- 53:13Speaker 6: make a bet on this podcast that they are going
- 53:15Speaker 6: to make the tournament. Basketball team is going to make
- 53:20Speaker 6: the NCAA tournament now.
- 53:21Speaker 3: If they don't, I don't know that's the real.
- 53:25Speaker 6: You know what, they're gonna win tournament game this year.
- 53:28Speaker 6: If they don't, we'll make the bet at some point.
- 53:30Speaker 6: I don't it's on a whim at seven am. I
- 53:32Speaker 6: don't think we're bet ready, but I'm ready. We'll we'll
- 53:36Speaker 6: figure out what.
- 53:36Speaker 2: Do you want?
- 53:37Speaker 1: What do you want?
- 53:37Speaker 2: While you're saying this, while I have you what do
- 53:39Speaker 2: you want?
- 53:39Speaker 3: What your head?
- 53:41Speaker 6: No, not that I'm very confident.
- 53:48Speaker 5: That they're gonna win tournament game that we will not. Okay,
- 53:53Speaker 5: hold up, it'll be me worse you.
- 53:56Speaker 1: You're gonna throw this out there and actually ask me
- 53:58Speaker 1: out to respond. We've played two sisters of the blind
- 54:01Speaker 1: Deaf teams like.
- 54:03Speaker 5: Wow, okay, all those FU listeners are gonna they're done.
- 54:06Speaker 5: But yeah, but.
- 54:10Speaker 2: What do you what do you what do you want to?
- 54:11Speaker 2: I'm glad you want it to. I was I was
- 54:13Speaker 2: even gonna do but no, we're out to win a
- 54:15Speaker 2: tournament game now, so let's go there.
- 54:17Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't want to go that far. But I'm
- 54:23Speaker 5: in the corner now, I'll take it. Yeah, they're gonna
- 54:25Speaker 5: win tournament game for what?
- 54:27Speaker 2: What do you want the bet to be?
- 54:28Speaker 6: We we will have that come Thursday.
- 54:31Speaker 2: I want it now because you're gonna change your mind
- 54:33Speaker 2: by Thursday.
- 54:34Speaker 5: No you can't, No, I can't. I'm in. We'll have
- 54:37Speaker 5: the bet ready by Thursday.
- 54:38Speaker 1: Okay, we're not gonna do like a something soft because
- 54:44Speaker 1: that's what you're gonna want to do, because you're not.
- 54:45Speaker 2: You're not gonna like you're You're gonna be scared of your.
- 54:47Speaker 6: Side los loser has to pick their finger.
- 54:53Speaker 2: That is not.
- 54:56Speaker 5: Very concerning loser the winner. The winner gets to prick
