- 0:00Speaker 1: The off season is here. What is some of the
- 0:03Speaker 1: to do for the Birds.
- 0:05Speaker 2: We'll look at the new lift for the offense, which
- 0:08Speaker 2: is pretty much signed. Everybody is signed to come back
- 0:11Speaker 2: except for Dallas Goddard.
- 0:14Speaker 1: So what does that mean. Let's take a look.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Adam Kaplan spent last week on Radio Row with us.
- 0:19Speaker 2: We had some fun roundtable football at four sessions. But
- 0:24Speaker 2: now the super Bowl was in the books and the
- 0:26Speaker 2: off season is here. Adam, good to talk to you again, pal.
- 0:30Speaker 3: That was awesome. Yeah, we had a great time with
- 0:33Speaker 3: no doubt. And how about you know, I sick about
- 0:35Speaker 3: this today kind of you know, I do stuff for
- 0:39Speaker 3: Sports Grid. We'll talk about the week and you know
- 0:43Speaker 3: what I saw and heard. But the story that Brian Hoyer,
- 0:46Speaker 3: I believe he told it with us last week, right
- 0:48Speaker 3: with Greg when he talked about how Wade Fields put
- 0:51Speaker 3: a brand new defense and they've never seen and they
- 0:55Speaker 3: kind of during the game you talk about halftime adjustments
- 0:58Speaker 3: or whatever adjustments, they completely tried to kind of rework
- 1:02Speaker 3: their offensive game plan as the game went along. That
- 1:05Speaker 3: was the Super Bowl in twenty eighteen. That was a
- 1:08Speaker 3: low scoring game, but somehow you got to give Josh
- 1:10Speaker 3: Beteino's credit the story Horror told him he was phenomenal,
- 1:13Speaker 3: by the way, with us, Yeah, that.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Was a lot of fun, by the way, just the
- 1:17Speaker 2: whole week, but the football and four segments, the roundtables,
- 1:21Speaker 2: you and Greg and Hoyer for that segment, it was
- 1:23Speaker 2: a lot of fun and we uncovered so many different things,
- 1:26Speaker 2: and one of the things that we uncovered happened to
- 1:28Speaker 2: be well, we didn't get to uncover until after the
- 1:31Speaker 2: fact because AJ Brown did speak on the Micah Parsons
- 1:34Speaker 2: podcast last week.
- 1:36Speaker 1: So when the.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Eagles offseason to do list starts, I guess the first
- 1:40Speaker 2: question they have to come to terms with Adam is
- 1:44Speaker 2: AJ Brown's future. So what does the future for AJ
- 1:47Speaker 2: Brown look like? Where does it kind of start here?
- 1:50Speaker 3: Yeah, well, Mike, here's a thing. We know how talent
- 1:54Speaker 3: he is, and I think I think you asked him
- 1:56Speaker 3: about AJ Brown and he he did say it. He
- 2:00Speaker 3: still looked good, but there were little there were times
- 2:02Speaker 3: with the effort had to be better. He signed through
- 2:05Speaker 3: twenty twenty nine. The guaranteed money is it's it's significant,
- 2:11Speaker 3: but the guaranteed money fully guaranteed money ends after the season.
- 2:16Speaker 3: I mean it passed the season, Mike, you have to
- 2:18Speaker 3: ask yourself. This is the way he's explaining to me.
- 2:20Speaker 3: He turns by the way twenty nine in June. At
- 2:25Speaker 3: what point do you think that it's diminishing returns? Like
- 2:28Speaker 3: you know, he's not the same player, And do you
- 2:31Speaker 3: do you do you want to wait another year to
- 2:33Speaker 3: trade him. We're not even talking about his issues with
- 2:36Speaker 3: getting the ball and whatever he is going on with him,
- 2:38Speaker 3: he and hurts. We're just talking about age and how
- 2:41Speaker 3: it catches up with you is doctor David Chow told
- 2:44Speaker 3: us when we asked him last year, he's got, you know,
- 2:47Speaker 3: he's got. He came up with a term. It's something
- 2:49Speaker 3: like football needs. It's wear and tear them both knees.
- 2:52Speaker 3: It's not just one as I understood it when the
- 2:54Speaker 3: Titans traded him. But he's been really healthy here. I mean,
- 2:57Speaker 3: that's one of the amazing things. He hasn't missed a
- 2:59Speaker 3: lot of time. But you never want to wait till
- 3:01Speaker 3: it's too late. I've given the Ashon Jeffreys example that
- 3:05Speaker 3: they restructured and extended his contract. That turned out to
- 3:08Speaker 3: be a mistake. So with aj Brown, Mike, they have
- 3:13Speaker 3: to have a real honest talk with themselves. And then
- 3:15Speaker 3: the other thing is this is a big thing when
- 3:17Speaker 3: you talk about the to do list. I know the
- 3:20Speaker 3: coaches are very limited to what they're in their communication
- 3:23Speaker 3: with the players in the offseason, but Sean many cannot
- 3:26Speaker 3: wait till May to talk to this guy. They I
- 3:28Speaker 3: know that the rules prohibit them from visiting, but somehow
- 3:32Speaker 3: they have to spot on whether it's text or zoom.
- 3:36Speaker 3: They've got to talk, and they've got if Brown's going
- 3:38Speaker 3: to stay, he's at least got to feel very good
- 3:41Speaker 3: about the scheme going forward.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Well, and you know he said that change sometimes can
- 3:46Speaker 2: be a good thing. And then he kind of gave
- 3:47Speaker 2: a compliment to Kevin Batulloh so is this his lay
- 3:51Speaker 2: of saying, Look, I've been asking for it, and you
- 3:54Speaker 2: finally made the move. I'm ready to go to work.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Well, it's more of the scheme, Mike. We you talked
- 4:01Speaker 3: about greg co cell there. He called it. He called
- 4:03Speaker 3: a high school offense. At one point he was just
- 4:06Speaker 3: he doesn't Gregory says, it's not opinion. It's based on
- 4:10Speaker 3: what the tape tells me. And we we had said,
- 4:13Speaker 3: Mike more than once during our show last season, we
- 4:17Speaker 3: had one personal guy telling it's the worst scheme that
- 4:19Speaker 3: he'd seen the National Foota League in years. And yeah,
- 4:22Speaker 3: you could you could blame you could blame the former
- 4:26Speaker 3: offense coordinator Kevin Patula, but it's not his scheme. It's
- 4:29Speaker 3: Sirianni's scheme. Well no longer because well, and that's where
- 4:32Speaker 3: you're changing it.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Yeah, that's where Adam aj kind of said, hey, he's
- 4:36Speaker 2: got a good heart and and I really respect him,
- 4:39Speaker 2: you know, in other words, like he tried.
- 4:42Speaker 1: It wasn't his fault, but something had to be done.
- 4:45Speaker 3: That's a very good way to say it, Mike, it
- 4:50Speaker 3: had you knew. Look, my mom is ninety five, which
- 4:52Speaker 3: he turns the ninety five next month, knows that there
- 4:54Speaker 3: was going to be a change. There had to be now. Now,
- 4:57Speaker 3: in some buildings, Petula could have come back as the
- 4:59Speaker 3: OC with or without the play calling, but it would
- 5:02Speaker 3: never work in Nego's building, with Jeffrey Lory being the
- 5:05Speaker 3: owner demands he puts an offense. So you got Sean Manion,
- 5:08Speaker 3: who now is in a third year in coaching. I
- 5:10Speaker 3: cannot wait to see this thing in the in OTAs.
- 5:13Speaker 3: But they've got to get on this. If Brown's going
- 5:16Speaker 3: to be back and not traded. They've got to be
- 5:18Speaker 3: on the same page with him in more ways than one.
- 5:20Speaker 3: In Howie Howie, I know for fact does talk to players,
- 5:24Speaker 3: He tries to connect with him. We know Shiriani is
- 5:27Speaker 3: a great connector everybody's got. If he's going to be back,
- 5:32Speaker 3: they've got to have a heart to heart with him.
- 5:33Speaker 3: And enough of the acting out it doesn't help. And
- 5:36Speaker 3: obviously Hurts and aj have got to get somehow on
- 5:39Speaker 3: the same page.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Adam Kaplan football in four Yeah, let's go there, the
- 5:43Speaker 2: offensive coordinator and Jalen hurt. Some people wonder whether Jalen
- 5:47Speaker 2: Hurts can even run Sean Mannion's offense here, So how
- 5:50Speaker 2: do they get on the same page.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Yeah, we talked about this when Manyu was hired. Mike,
- 5:54Speaker 3: they're gonna run an old school West Coast offense to well,
- 5:57Speaker 3: I say that with an asterisk. They're gonna run a
- 5:59Speaker 3: West Coast offense. Up to debate or argument, that's what
- 6:02Speaker 3: they're running. It's how could you match it up with
- 6:06Speaker 3: your quarterback? Yes, as you brought up on the surface,
- 6:10Speaker 3: it's hard to imagine this is going to be good
- 6:12Speaker 3: for hers. However, within that, as explained to me, by
- 6:18Speaker 3: someone with another team who's in coaching, who's coaching on
- 6:20Speaker 3: the West Coast. It's not like they can't bring in
- 6:22Speaker 3: some concepts it hurts likes. Of course they can. But
- 6:25Speaker 3: the overall concepts are going to change. And you've got
- 6:28Speaker 3: to find something with your tape study. And I'm sure
- 6:32Speaker 3: that Manion's done it that hurts things and the OSI
- 6:35Speaker 3: thinks that he can execute. That's good. And communication connectivity
- 6:41Speaker 3: it absolutely crucial because you know, Hurts is a quiet guy, introspective,
- 6:46Speaker 3: he's this is just the way he is. But man
- 6:49Speaker 3: Manion as a young coach who has got to get
- 6:54Speaker 3: on the same page with Hurts, and when they're allowed
- 6:56Speaker 3: to communicate, they've got to get on the same page
- 6:59Speaker 3: and know each other. Remember Patula worked with Herts for
- 7:01Speaker 3: five years. What didn't For an example, a guy that
- 7:04Speaker 3: the Eagles talked to, Bobby Slowak with the Texans. What
- 7:07Speaker 3: I'm told was he did not get fired because the
- 7:11Speaker 3: second year after a great rookie season for GJ. Shald
- 7:14Speaker 3: that that was not the factor. The factor with Slowk
- 7:17Speaker 3: was he had major problems getting on the same page
- 7:19Speaker 3: with strouted communication. He got fired because of it. So
- 7:23Speaker 3: you've got to like Mannion as a young coach only
- 7:27Speaker 3: in his third year in coaching and calling place for
- 7:29Speaker 3: the first time. He's got to get on the same
- 7:31Speaker 3: page with Hurts crucial, Adam.
- 7:34Speaker 2: What about getting on the same page. Let's talk about
- 7:36Speaker 2: that with the new offensive line coach and how that
- 7:39Speaker 2: will affect the decisions of a landed Dickerson and Lane Johnson.
- 7:43Speaker 2: You got Sirianni, you got Manion, and now you got
- 7:47Speaker 2: Cooper the new offensive line coach.
- 7:49Speaker 3: Yep, And again communication is very luned by the CEA
- 7:53Speaker 3: as CBA. It's not going to be easy. I'd be
- 7:57Speaker 3: stun Iflane Johnson retired. Look, you never say never, as
- 7:59Speaker 3: we've talked about for nine years now, and inside burds
- 8:01Speaker 3: you just you say never. But with Dickerson, it's it's
- 8:08Speaker 3: a situation, Mike, where he does. Look, he's only twenty seven.
- 8:12Speaker 3: He turns twenty eight in September, right that Like, it's
- 8:16Speaker 3: very rare, not impossible, but to happen. But most players
- 8:22Speaker 3: that go through this they kind of stick it out
- 8:23Speaker 3: a couple of years and then retire before they're thirty.
- 8:25Speaker 3: But this will be very young to do this. But
- 8:27Speaker 3: you know what, as I tell people, we're not in
- 8:29Speaker 3: his shoes with Landon. He doesn't know, Manion. I'm I
- 8:34Speaker 3: would assume Chris Cooper, the new O line coach, he
- 8:38Speaker 3: was a younger guy, a younger O line coach in
- 8:40Speaker 3: terms of his career. He's only been running a room
- 8:42Speaker 3: for four years. So this is this is different here, Mike.
- 8:47Speaker 3: They're limited to what they're allowed to do and what
- 8:50Speaker 3: they could say to Landin if you're a new coach.
- 8:52Speaker 3: But the sooner they kind of figured out with Landin
- 8:55Speaker 3: the better. And obviously they're not going to rush him
- 8:57Speaker 3: to make a decision. But you know, Chris Cooper is
- 8:59Speaker 3: a that I might cover him as a player. He
- 9:03Speaker 3: is almost entire background is in West Coast and the
- 9:08Speaker 3: kind of blocking angles and what they're going to ask
- 9:10Speaker 3: to do. So he knows this that he knows this
- 9:14Speaker 3: scheme that they're going to run and we'll see how
- 9:16Speaker 3: it does. And that'll be another offseason discussion, Mike, what
- 9:19Speaker 3: it's going to look like under Cooper?
- 9:21Speaker 1: Well, I'll tell you what.
- 9:22Speaker 2: And that's another thing real quick on that is is
- 9:25Speaker 2: this offensive line the way that Staltlin built it, are
- 9:29Speaker 2: they equipped to run a West Coast offense? That's a
- 9:31Speaker 2: different style of offensive lineman too.
- 9:34Speaker 3: Well, they did do it under Doug Peterson. Doug Peterson
- 9:36Speaker 3: want to run what's called a spread West Coast offense
- 9:38Speaker 3: according to the coaches I spoke with who were there then.
- 9:41Speaker 3: But Doug doesn't run it. He doesn't see the same way.
- 9:44Speaker 3: And of course Stalin was the offensive line coach then.
- 9:46Speaker 3: But things are Things change and people evolve, and you're
- 9:49Speaker 3: talking about basically ten years since since the first year
- 9:54Speaker 3: that Doug was here, obviously in twenty sixteen. But the
- 9:57Speaker 3: way that they're going to run this, which is going
- 9:59Speaker 3: to be the mcveigh's, is different, so is Shanahan's from Dougs.
- 10:04Speaker 3: The blocking angles are going to be different. We we'll
- 10:07Speaker 3: talk more about this with Greg co Seltians on the
- 10:09Speaker 3: Intel with Greg co Sellen during our offseason shows. Greg
- 10:12Speaker 3: will break it down for us. But it's you write
- 10:15Speaker 3: a good point, Mike. It's they're super still very talent
- 10:19Speaker 3: the offensive line, but like, does Tyler Stein fit this?
- 10:24Speaker 3: Does Jurgens? Look? Look, Jurgon's on a contract for a while,
- 10:26Speaker 3: but we'll not have to see what happens to Mike.
- 10:28Speaker 3: It's another one of the many questions for this football
- 10:32Speaker 3: team in their offseason. What fits and what doesn't fit.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Uh let's go to Goddard. He is a free agent.
- 10:40Speaker 2: He's the only free agent on offense, but not a
- 10:43Speaker 2: fat of company. You let him walk, you know, may
- 10:46Speaker 2: replace him on the roster. There's not a young player.
- 10:48Speaker 2: I mean, you can say Cam Latu, but there is
- 10:50Speaker 2: not a guy with a lot any experience.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Uh So what is Goddard's future here?
- 10:56Speaker 3: All right, We're gonna talk more about this in freegency,
- 10:59Speaker 3: but this is to me on my do my to
- 11:01Speaker 3: do list. A lot two's back. He's under contract, he'll be,
- 11:05Speaker 3: he'll he's a y ten end. He's he's an inside
- 11:07Speaker 3: ten end who's there to block. Did a very good
- 11:09Speaker 3: job in his role, although I still think they blew
- 11:11Speaker 3: it with him. He was used more as an offset
- 11:13Speaker 3: full back, then on a tight end, a why tight end,
- 11:15Speaker 3: But he's really a why Mike, You're right. They have
- 11:19Speaker 3: to stroll and consider bringing god Her back why A
- 11:22Speaker 3: for cap reasons. They actually restructured his contract before they
- 11:27Speaker 3: It's kind of complicated. It was explained to me by
- 11:29Speaker 3: someone who would definitely know they could. They can massage
- 11:32Speaker 3: the cap a little bit if he comes back. But
- 11:35Speaker 3: the big thing is because he clearly showed he hasn't
- 11:37Speaker 3: lost anything kind of look, I get it. They didn't
- 11:40Speaker 3: throw into him a lot outside the outside of the
- 11:42Speaker 3: red area where he scored a number of touchdowns, but
- 11:45Speaker 3: he showed he could still play. He's always been a
- 11:47Speaker 3: good blocker. What maybe dropped off a little bit as
- 11:50Speaker 3: a blocker less He's but there are reasons for that.
- 11:53Speaker 3: They have so many needs, Mike, and we'll talk more
- 11:56Speaker 3: about this that we get closer to free agency, but
- 11:57Speaker 3: that probably more needs on both sides of the football,
- 12:01Speaker 3: and then probably the last six or seven years, way
- 12:02Speaker 3: more than you think. But probably I'm already on this,
- 12:04Speaker 3: I already have my list. I'm stunned way more than
- 12:08Speaker 3: I anticipated. It's not only because of free agency for
- 12:11Speaker 3: both sides of the football. It's injury player development age.
- 12:16Speaker 3: Like they have a lot to do in this offseason.
- 12:18Speaker 2: They do and it happens fast, right like at the
- 12:20Speaker 2: beginning of last year, you're not even thinking, and then
- 12:22Speaker 2: one year.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Later you're like, wow, they got this. This guy got old.
- 12:25Speaker 2: And by the way, the free agency begins on Wednesday,
- 12:28Speaker 2: March eleventh, one month from tomorrow, and don't forget February
- 12:33Speaker 2: is short, so it's actually shorter than a month from
- 12:36Speaker 2: now Wednesday at four o'clock. By Wednesday at four o'clock,
- 12:40Speaker 2: we will know one hundred and fifty players have changed
- 12:41Speaker 2: teams because.
- 12:42Speaker 3: Of my starts money. Just so you know, the the
- 12:45Speaker 3: legal legal tampering period is. It starts Monday at twelve
- 12:49Speaker 3: pm Eastern. I hate this role. I hated it when
- 12:52Speaker 3: they did it, when they when they What you just said,
- 12:55Speaker 3: Mike is the reason why by the time we get
- 12:57Speaker 3: to the official league year ye p Measter and on Wednesday,
- 13:02Speaker 3: every just about every key players have been already agreed to.
- 13:05Speaker 3: It's just it's so stupid, stupid. In fact, Ray Anderson
- 13:09Speaker 3: who came up with the idea, who who left the
- 13:12Speaker 3: NFL to be I think he might still be at
- 13:15Speaker 3: Arizona State. But it just because I talked to Ray
- 13:19Speaker 3: about it many years ago because the tampering so rampant,
- 13:22Speaker 3: they wanted a better way to corral it. But so
- 13:24Speaker 3: what it happens at the Combine help mcnow was being shopped.
- 13:27Speaker 3: I put this out in twenty ten. Mcdad was being
- 13:30Speaker 3: shopped at the Deceinierball MIC. So it's just yeah, the tampering.
- 13:36Speaker 3: The tampering happens, man, it's just you're not gonna it's
- 13:38Speaker 3: not gonna see.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Yeah, the new league year officially begins on Wednesday, March eleventh,
- 13:42Speaker 2: at four, but there is a two day legal tampering
- 13:45Speaker 2: negotiation that begins on March the ninth at noon. So
- 13:49Speaker 2: on March ninth at noon, we will start to know
- 13:53Speaker 2: where players are moving. And by the way, starting next
- 13:56Speaker 2: week on the seventeenth, the window for franchise tags and
- 14:01Speaker 2: the transition tag. I would imagine the Eagles would not
- 14:03Speaker 2: think about doing that. For God or correct or Jalen.
- 14:06Speaker 3: And the Eagles, they don't like to use it. No,
- 14:09Speaker 3: not only do they not like to use it. Teams
- 14:10Speaker 3: tell me this, there's some teams that are more inclined
- 14:13Speaker 3: to use it. Teams that don't like using it. They'll
- 14:16Speaker 3: only do it if they absolutely have to have the
- 14:18Speaker 3: player back and they're like, we're not gonna let this
- 14:21Speaker 3: guy go now. With George Pickens and the Cowboys, I
- 14:23Speaker 3: felt all along that because it's highly unlikely they're gonna
- 14:26Speaker 3: extend his deal. Not impossible, but it's highly unlikely because
- 14:29Speaker 3: he had some games where he just simply didn't show up.
- 14:31Speaker 3: Why would you give this guy a multi year deal
- 14:33Speaker 3: when their games. It's the same reason why the Steelers
- 14:35Speaker 3: got rid of him. They don't trust him.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Football four.
- 14:38Speaker 2: It begins the off season and we will be all
- 14:41Speaker 2: over it right here. And don't forget the Inside the
- 14:43Speaker 2: Birds podcast. Check that out on all podcasting platforms. We
- 14:47Speaker 2: know you already do.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Thanks Adam,
