- 0:39When you've all know, A Harare published his first book,
- 0:42Sapiens, in 2014, about the history of the human species.
- 0:46It became a global bestseller and turned the little known
- 0:49Israeli history professor into one of the most popular writers
- 0:52and thinkers on the planet. But when we met with Harare in
- 0:56Tel Aviv this summer, it wasn't our species past that concerned
- 0:59him. It was our future.
- 1:01Harare believes we may be on the brink of creating not just a new
- 1:05enhanced species of human, but an entirely new kind of being,
- 1:09one that's far more intelligent than we are.
- 1:12It sounds like science fiction, but you've all know a, Harare
- 1:15says. It's actually much more
- 1:17dangerous than that. You said we are one of the last
- 1:20generations of Homo sapiens. Within a century or two, Earth
- 1:22will be dominated by entities that are more different from us
- 1:26than we are different from chimpanzees.
- 1:28Yeah. What the hell does that mean?
- 1:31That freaked me out. You know, we'll soon have the
- 1:33power to re engineer our bodies and brains, whether it is with
- 1:39genetic engineering or by directly connecting brains to
- 1:43computers or by creating completely non organic entities.
- 1:49Artificial intelligence, which is not based at all on the
- 1:53organic body and the organic brain.
- 1:56And these technologies are developing at breakneck speed.
- 1:59If that is true, then it creates a whole other species.
- 2:04This is something which is way beyond just another species.
- 2:10Today, scientists are doing something that not long ago was
- 2:13unthinkable. They can edit the genetic code
- 2:16of living beings. The tool is called CRISPR.
- 2:20It works like a pair of molecular scissors.
- 2:24It can cut DNA at a precise location, remove specific genes
- 2:29or insert entirely new ones. The technology is less than 10
- 2:33years old, yet it has already changed medicine and
- 2:37agriculture. Crops have been made resistant
- 2:40to disease. Mosquitoes altered so they can
- 2:43no longer spread malaria. Human embryos edited to remove
- 2:47inherited disorders In 2019, Chinese researchers injected 25
- 2:54human stem cells capable of forming any cell type, including
- 2:58placenta, into 132 macaque embryos.
- 3:02It seems today scientists are more concerned with whether or
- 3:05not they can do something, and seldom bothered by whether or
- 3:09not they should. Don't you see the danger your
- 3:12scientists were so preoccupied with?
- 3:14Whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think of this.
- 3:17Short and now the frontier is merging biology and technology.
- 3:23Researchers are developing neural implants that can connect
- 3:26the human brain to computers. Robotic limbs controlled
- 3:30directly by thought, artificial organs, synthetic eyes that can
- 3:35see beyond the range of normal vision.
- 3:38Artificial intelligence is being trained to read brain signals,
- 3:43translate them into action, even into speech.
- 3:46The line between human and machine begins to blur.
- 3:49For some, the goal is to repair and restore, but for others it's
- 3:54to enhance, to create a human that is stronger, faster, more
- 4:00intelligent and perhaps more controllable.
- 4:04Scientists predict this will lead to a new kind of human
- 4:07altogether, our own descendants genetically altered and
- 4:12mechanically enhanced. If we can do this now, with
- 4:17tools that didn't exist a decade ago, what might have been
- 4:21possible for a civilization thousands of years ahead of us?
- 4:26Ancient Sumerian tablets describe the gods mixing their
- 4:30essence with the clay of the earth to create humans.
- 4:35Egyptian temples show beings that are part man, part animal.
- 4:40Indian texts describe deities with multiple arms, animal
- 4:44heads, or the ability to change form at will.
- 4:48Was this just symbolic or records of beings who had
- 4:52already crossed the line? In the Bible, the cherubim stood
- 5:16watch over Eden's entrance. In Mesopotamia, Lamassu guarded
- 5:21the palaces of kings. Perhaps these weren't mere
- 5:24symbols carved in stone, but depictions of actual
- 5:28bioengineered Sentinels, intelligent, loyal, and built to
- 5:32deter any threat. But where did they go?
- 5:37Were they wiped out and the cataclysms remembered as the
- 5:39Flood, haunted to extinction by the very gods who made them?
- 5:45Or were they taken back to wherever those gods came from,
- 5:49leaving only fragments behind? Deep beneath the sands of
- 5:54Sakara, Egypt lies the Serapeum, an underground catacomb carved
- 5:59across centuries, rediscovered in 1850 by Auguste Mariette.
- 6:05When he uncovered it, he found several massive granite
- 6:09sarcophagi, each weighed between 40 and 62 tons, carved from hard
- 6:14stone like diorite and slid into place.
- 6:18All empty. No mummies inside, just enormous
- 6:22sealed boxes buried in the dark. In the modern age, we found
- 6:27traces that don't fit comfortably into the story we
- 6:29tell ourselves. Elongated skulls scattered from
- 6:33South America to the Caucasus. Bones with proportions that defy
- 6:37human anatomy. And if you go further, much
- 6:42further, could some of the fossils we call dinosaurs
- 6:46actually be the remains of ancient hybrids, skeletons
- 6:50pieced together not from nature's slow evolution, but
- 6:54from deliberate design? The evidence is scattered, the
- 6:58connection's elusive, but the pattern is there, in stone, in
- 7:03bone, and in myth. If the hybrid guardians of the
- 7:07ancient world were erased, it wasn't by accident, and it may
- 7:12not be forever. Some doors are locked for a
- 7:16reason. What happens when we open them
- 7:19again? TuneIn, next time to the
- 7:22Anunnaki connection. Good night.
