- 0:32Speaker 5: This is William Forsythe and you're listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 0:49Speaker 2: It's showtime.
- 0:50Speaker 5: The following feature has been rated R by the Motion
- 0:53Speaker 5: Picture Association of America.
- 0:55Speaker 2: It is intended for mature audiences and parental discretion is advised.
- 1:00Speaker 5: Our nuclear reactor pumping out one million kilowatts of power.
- 1:30Speaker 5: Five more cooling in the containment chamber.
- 1:32Speaker 6: To your stations. We have a movie meltdown.
- 1:38Speaker 4: There is.
- 1:41Speaker 6: No tomorrow!
- 1:46Speaker 4: What's up and welcome to Movie Meltdown. I am Brian.
- 1:49Speaker 4: And joining me this week is special guest.
- 1:51Speaker 6: Justin Golak.
- 1:53Speaker 4: Previous guest. Welcome back.
- 1:55Speaker 6: Thanks for having me back. Great to be back.
- 1:57Speaker 4: It's been a little while. How have things been for you?
- 2:00Speaker 6: Things have been pretty good, you know? I was coming
- 2:03Speaker 6: to Louisville last time I was on the show to
- 2:06Speaker 6: do a stand-up show, I believe at Slice, which I
- 2:10Speaker 6: believe is not a restaurant anymore.
- 2:13Speaker 4: I lose track of things.
- 2:15Speaker 6: But it was a super fun show, and now I'm
- 2:18Speaker 6: back at Mag Bar. And, yeah.
- 2:22Speaker 4: They've been around for a while.
- 2:23Speaker 6: Yeah, I recorded an album between then and now, so
- 2:25Speaker 6: I got a new hour. So, this is kind of
- 2:27Speaker 6: actually my first big road run with the new hour. So,
- 2:32Speaker 6: it should be fun. Glad to be back on the
- 2:34Speaker 6: movie Meltdown.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Definitely.
- 2:36Speaker 4: I will usually ease our way in with, like, have
- 2:39Speaker 4: you seen any movies lately?
- 2:43Speaker 6: Is that... Yeah. I've been seeing... So, I was, like,
- 2:47Speaker 6: not a frequent movie seer. And then... About three months ago,
- 2:51Speaker 6: I got MoviePass.
- 2:53Speaker 4: I've heard this from many people in the last couple
- 2:56Speaker 4: of years.
- 2:56Speaker 6: Yeah, so I come preaching the evangel of MoviePass. It's
- 3:00Speaker 6: pretty great. You know, I think they make you pay
- 3:03Speaker 6: for a year up front. So I think like with month,
- 3:05Speaker 6: I think we paid $ 105 for a year. And it's like,
- 3:09Speaker 6: I think I've seen like 12 movies in like three,
- 3:12Speaker 6: two and a half months, something like that.
- 3:13Speaker 4: Are there any blacked out movies? Movies like the opening week?
- 3:18Speaker 4: I keep waiting to figure out what the loopholes are.
- 3:20Speaker 6: It's just 3D and IMAX. You can't see.
- 3:22Speaker 4: Which I don't really... And then it's like you have to.
- 3:26Speaker 6: They have some online ticketing but mostly you have to
- 3:29Speaker 6: buy in person. So it's like you're not blocked on
- 3:31Speaker 6: opening weekend but you'd have to go old school.
- 3:34Speaker 4: You gotta like stand in line.
- 3:35Speaker 6: Stand in line or get there. So it's not... If
- 3:39Speaker 6: you're used to just the completely easy buy on my phone,
- 3:42Speaker 6: show up, scan a QR code. It's maybe not super
- 3:44Speaker 6: user friendly but... the price per movie can't be beat.
- 3:48Speaker 4: That's true. I do. I have to say, I've mentioned
- 3:51Speaker 4: it on previous episodes. I'm like, man, I really liked that.
- 3:54Speaker 4: Knowing I have a ticket and a specific seat before, like,
- 3:58Speaker 4: especially with the big, cause we'll end up doing, you know,
- 4:00Speaker 4: whatever the latest superhero movie is. And I'm just like,
- 4:03Speaker 4: I do not want to wait in a line. I
- 4:05Speaker 4: don't want to get there and be in the back
- 4:06Speaker 4: corner or the front wrong corner.
- 4:09Speaker 6: And I don't know in Louisville, do they have a
- 4:11Speaker 6: lot of theaters now? Cause it's big in Chicago where
- 4:13Speaker 6: you pick your seat when you get your ticket.
- 4:16Speaker 4: That's most of the, again, almost all we have now
- 4:19Speaker 4: is chain, and most of the chains have moved to that.
- 4:21Speaker 6: So, yeah, if you get there late, it's like you
- 4:24Speaker 6: don't even get a good seat.
- 4:25Speaker 4: You're looking at the map going, oh, these all suck.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:27Speaker 4: I've seen people do that.
- 4:28Speaker 6: It's just front row, and so you're like, oh, well,
- 4:30Speaker 6: they do. It's not sold out, but it's kind of
- 4:32Speaker 6: sold out.
- 4:32Speaker 4: You're screwed.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:35Speaker 6: So you're not a movie passer then.
- 4:37Speaker 4: I have not gone. Mostly just because I end up
- 4:40Speaker 4: doing so much other stuff. i usually fighting with this
- 4:44Speaker 4: or editing this or like i don't make it to
- 4:47Speaker 4: other movies at the time yeah it's like just what
- 4:50Speaker 4: you're watching just whatever we're watching that week and i'm
- 4:52Speaker 4: like i don't know that i would catch up enough
- 4:54Speaker 4: like i might just break even to what i'm doing
- 4:56Speaker 4: now totally fair i'm still it's it's it's in the
- 5:00Speaker 4: in the in the back burner there like i like.
- 5:03Speaker 6: It i like it because then you i just end
- 5:05Speaker 6: up seeing more movies because there's like when when you
- 5:07Speaker 6: have the price at like whatever, $ 14 or $ 15 a movie,
- 5:11Speaker 6: it kind of makes you more discerning. Whereas now you
- 5:14Speaker 6: might be like, oh, let's give it a shot. And
- 5:15Speaker 6: every once in a while you get really surprised and
- 5:17Speaker 6: that's a lot of fun.
- 5:18Speaker 4: Were there any like that lately? Of these last few
- 5:22Speaker 4: that you've seen.
- 5:22Speaker 6: That movie, Blockers, with John Cena and Leslie Mann, that
- 5:28Speaker 6: was another one where it was like, me and my wife,
- 5:30Speaker 6: we had nothing really to do. We were like, this
- 5:32Speaker 6: has a show time, let's go see it. And it
- 5:35Speaker 6: wasn't like a knockout, but it was pretty funny. It
- 5:37Speaker 6: was funnier than you maybe would have wanted to think
- 5:40Speaker 6: it was. And again, I wouldn't have put up 15
- 5:42Speaker 6: bucks for it. But when you're like, we got the
- 5:44Speaker 6: movie pass, let's go see it. We'd kind of seen
- 5:46Speaker 6: everything else, so check it out.
- 5:47Speaker 4: I have two thoughts on that one. First of which,
- 5:50Speaker 4: I don't think I voiced my theory on this issue
- 5:54Speaker 4: on the show. I'm pretty sure John Cena, I don't know,
- 5:59Speaker 4: he hurt his back or something. All of a sudden,
- 6:03Speaker 4: he's in weird comedies. He's the voice of an animated bull.
- 6:08Speaker 4: All of a sudden, he's showing up in a ton
- 6:10Speaker 4: of mainstream. I think he's just like, I'm an old
- 6:13Speaker 4: dude now in my field, and I need to start
- 6:16Speaker 4: figuring out an alternate way.
- 6:18Speaker 6: To do it. You never want to see the wrestlers
- 6:20Speaker 6: that don't plan for their future, so I think he's
- 6:23Speaker 6: seen that.
- 6:24Speaker 4: He hung in there longer than I expected, really.
- 6:27Speaker 6: He wants to be The Rock, not Hulk Hogan. He
- 6:30Speaker 6: doesn't want to be on reality TV. He wants to
- 6:31Speaker 6: be in movies.
- 6:33Speaker 4: What little I've seen, I'm like, he does seem like
- 6:35Speaker 4: he's got a good handle on comedy.
- 6:38Speaker 6: He's frustratingly likable.
- 6:39Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 6:40Speaker 6: Like, he really does work on screen. And speaking of
- 6:43Speaker 6: The Rock, I also did see Rampage and did love
- 6:45Speaker 6: every second of that.
- 6:47Speaker 4: My question then will be, are you a fan of
- 6:50Speaker 4: the game?
- 6:51Speaker 6: I was a fan of the game.
- 6:52Speaker 4: See, I was too. And I was just like, I
- 6:55Speaker 4: don't know that that swayed me one way or the other.
- 6:57Speaker 4: I'd probably go see a big, dumb monster movie either way.
- 7:00Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:01Speaker 4: But I'm more confused by the fact that that was
- 7:04Speaker 4: your product placement. Like, that was your go-to... recognizable name recognition.
- 7:10Speaker 4: It was rampant.
- 7:12Speaker 6: It was strange, because it is a game that doesn't
- 7:14Speaker 6: really have a storyline.
- 7:16Speaker 2: And is.
- 7:16Speaker 4: 25 30 years old yeah it's really old for like
- 7:21Speaker 4: gamer kids now.
- 7:22Speaker 6: It was uh it was strange i think that's why
- 7:25Speaker 6: like yeah i played the game i like the game
- 7:27Speaker 6: but if they were just like when i heard rampage
- 7:29Speaker 6: movie i'm like well i didn't like it enough to
- 7:31Speaker 6: go see a movie just based on that but then
- 7:33Speaker 6: when i saw the trailer.
- 7:34Speaker 4: And i was like then when you saw the rock
- 7:36Speaker 4: i was like the.
- 7:37Speaker 6: Rock i was like they're tearing apart chicago it's cool
- 7:39Speaker 6: to see the city you live in kind of torn
- 7:41Speaker 6: apart like i know that place i've been.
- 7:43Speaker 4: There I tore that up one night.
- 7:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:45Speaker 6: Then like all that together, I was like, all right,
- 7:47Speaker 6: I'll see it. And then like I said, then getting
- 7:48Speaker 6: the movie pass, I'm like, let's movie pass Rampage. And
- 7:51Speaker 6: it was really enjoyable.
- 7:53Speaker 4: I've heard mostly good things. I had one or two
- 7:56Speaker 4: that were, yeah, I'd heard people say that they were
- 7:59Speaker 4: just like.
- 7:59Speaker 8: What the hell?
- 8:00Speaker 4: But I mean, I feel like those are the kind
- 8:02Speaker 4: of people who would have seen that regardless of it
- 8:05Speaker 4: being Rampage or having The Rock or like just any
- 8:08Speaker 4: movie of that sort, they probably wouldn't have liked.
- 8:09Speaker 2: True. True.
- 8:11Speaker 4: Here's my other, and I'm going back to the blockers,
- 8:14Speaker 4: I guess, because I wanted to ask, I guess everybody,
- 8:18Speaker 4: I've complained about it on the show before, but you're
- 8:21Speaker 4: related to comedy?
- 8:22Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:23Speaker 4: Do you like a lot of modern comedies, movies-wise?
- 8:28Speaker 6: I feel like there's not a ton of great comedy
- 8:31Speaker 6: movies anymore. I feel like basically what has happened is
- 8:37Speaker 6: great comedy has gone to stand-up because now it's way...
- 8:41Speaker 6: I feel like if you were a stand-up before, it's like, well,
- 8:44Speaker 6: what's the chance of me doing an hour, but I
- 8:45Speaker 6: could get a movie or something like that. But now,
- 8:48Speaker 6: I mean, there's so many more platforms that air stand-up,
- 8:51Speaker 6: so you could just do your stand-up, which you're already
- 8:53Speaker 6: good at. Or, yeah, it's TV.
- 8:55Speaker 4: That's what I was going to say. I think it's
- 8:56Speaker 4: spilled over into a lot of those talented people probably
- 9:00Speaker 4: doing stand-up or writing for somebody else have gotten, now
- 9:03Speaker 4: you can't even get like a network TV show because
- 9:05Speaker 4: most of those are terrible too. But all the cable
- 9:08Speaker 4: channels or Netflix or Amazon, like, everybody has their own
- 9:11Speaker 4: series now and those are kind of genius but.
- 9:14Speaker 6: I can't think of the last like great comedy film
- 9:19Speaker 6: i had.
- 9:20Speaker 4: One that's why i wanted to see i've had one
- 9:22Speaker 4: in like that because i i've said that on the
- 9:24Speaker 4: show before too i'm like when i say i'm like
- 9:27Speaker 4: oh i like comedies i'll just shrug it off and
- 9:29Speaker 4: be like sure and then i'll think and be like
- 9:31Speaker 4: wow those are like in the 80s and maybe a
- 9:35Speaker 4: couple of nineties. Like I could not, like I liked
- 9:38Speaker 4: mystery team. Like I remember that's like one of the
- 9:41Speaker 4: ones that I'm like, those guys are super talented.
- 9:43Speaker 6: Well, I was thinking like, I just saw super troopers too,
- 9:46Speaker 6: which was not great, but super troopers one was great.
- 9:50Speaker 6: And that was not a good, but again, like, it's like, yeah,
- 9:52Speaker 6: I still would say there's a ton of great scripted comedy,
- 9:56Speaker 6: but it's all TV.
- 9:57Speaker 4: It's all going to TV.
- 9:57Speaker 6: It's all stream now. Like, um, well, I said like,
- 10:00Speaker 6: death of Stalin? Did you see that?
- 10:01Speaker 4: I've heard good.
- 10:02Speaker 6: That is very good.
- 10:03Speaker 4: That also seems very atypical, not normal. It's more art
- 10:07Speaker 4: house comedy.
- 10:10Speaker 6: And that's why like, um, I, I didn't even know
- 10:12Speaker 6: it going in. And then I kind of was like,
- 10:14Speaker 6: this reminds me of something I found out why it
- 10:16Speaker 6: was so reminding me of, but I love the show beep.
- 10:19Speaker 6: I don't know if you watch it. I think it's
- 10:20Speaker 6: the best comedy on television now. And it's the same,
- 10:23Speaker 6: the guy that's the showrunner of that was the writer
- 10:25Speaker 6: director of death of Stalin. It's similar humor where it's like,
- 10:29Speaker 6: It's a highbrow subject like Stalin or the presidency. But
- 10:33Speaker 6: the humor is very punchy. And it's funny. No one's
- 10:36Speaker 6: even using a Russian accent in Death of Stalin. I
- 10:40Speaker 6: heard that too. It's comedy forward.
- 10:42Speaker 4: This is the rules we're setting up for this movie.
- 10:45Speaker 4: No accents. Go with us.
- 10:46Speaker 6: Some people have British accents. But Steve Buscemi just talks
- 10:49Speaker 6: like Steve Buscemi.
- 10:50Speaker 4: That's his thing.
- 10:53Speaker 6: It just makes the point... This is comedy first. It's
- 10:56Speaker 6: based on real events and the kind of ridiculousness in
- 10:59Speaker 6: a fascist regime, but it's also just funny.
- 11:02Speaker 4: All right.
- 11:02Speaker 6: And I think Veep is kind of like the same way. Like,
- 11:04Speaker 6: the big thing in Veep, like, they don't mention political parties.
- 11:07Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:07Speaker 6: Like, you can maybe make assumptions based on some policy things,
- 11:10Speaker 6: but they don't mention political parties. For the best, really.
- 11:14Speaker 6: It's literally just like, these characters are ridiculous, they say
- 11:16Speaker 6: funny things, but we don't take a stance politically.
- 11:19Speaker 4: It's just funny. Which, yeah, is just going to kill
- 11:21Speaker 4: it one way or the other.
- 11:22Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 11:22Speaker 2: So, yeah, just.
- 11:24Speaker 4: That's not funny anyway. It's sad. It's frightening, but it's
- 11:27Speaker 4: not funny.
- 11:28Speaker 6: Right.
- 11:30Speaker 4: My exception to my years where I couldn't even think
- 11:34Speaker 4: of stuff recently, but I'd seen the trailer. I was like,
- 11:37Speaker 4: damn it, that looks good. I might go opening weekend
- 11:40Speaker 4: and see Game Night. Yeah. I was surprised.
- 11:45Speaker 6: How good that was. I did not get to see that,
- 11:47Speaker 6: but I've heard a ton of that from people, and
- 11:49Speaker 6: I will definitely check it out as soon as possible.
- 11:50Speaker 4: It is... Yeah, it is... I mean... Again, they don't
- 11:54Speaker 4: make stuff like that. And I think the thing that
- 11:56Speaker 4: was the most interesting and impressive to me is that
- 12:00Speaker 4: it is genuinely funny and never does it become gross-out comedy,
- 12:05Speaker 4: which is almost all they make now. Like anything big-budget
- 12:09Speaker 4: theater studio releases are just most of the time going
- 12:14Speaker 4: for gross-out jokes, which even blockers look like it was doing.
- 12:18Speaker 4: It has some.
- 12:18Speaker 6: That's why, like I said, it's not perfect, but I
- 12:21Speaker 6: guess it was more that I was impressed. by what
- 12:24Speaker 6: I assumed it would be.
- 12:25Speaker 4: And I like a lot of the people involved.
- 12:27Speaker 6: Totally.
- 12:27Speaker 4: Some of the other actors.
- 12:28Speaker 6: Yeah, there was still a lot of that.
- 12:29Speaker 5: I agree.
- 12:30Speaker 6: It has come to that for a lot of the big...
- 12:32Speaker 6: It's kind of like a sure shot.
- 12:33Speaker 4: Yeah, Game Night was so character... They came up with
- 12:38Speaker 4: this whole group of people. All of them are really
- 12:41Speaker 4: well written and they're smart but not unrealistically smart. They're
- 12:46Speaker 4: goofy in a way that the person you'd be married
- 12:48Speaker 4: to is. And you know it and deal with them
- 12:51Speaker 4: on a regular basis. I'm like, it was just... surprisingly
- 12:54Speaker 4: good character development while also putting together this like really
- 12:58Speaker 4: elaborate plan of like, it is a fake game, but
- 13:02Speaker 4: then at times it's not. And then, so yeah, it's,
- 13:05Speaker 4: it's surprising how well that came together.
- 13:08Speaker 6: I've heard that multiple times. So I will definitely check it.
- 13:10Speaker 4: Out as soon as possible. You and all people listening.
- 13:13Speaker 6: Like, like I said, it's in that limbo state where like,
- 13:15Speaker 6: I know none of the theaters around me are showing it.
- 13:17Speaker 6: So I'm assuming.
- 13:18Speaker 4: It'll be streaming soon.
- 13:19Speaker 6: So I'll catch it.
- 13:19Speaker 4: In two weeks it'll be on Blu-ray.
- 13:21Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:22Speaker 8: Probably.
- 13:22Speaker 6: I will catch it. I've heard good things.
- 13:24Speaker 4: Definitely worth checking out. Nice.
- 13:27Speaker 2: All right.
- 13:29Speaker 4: Then I think we'll get a minor break in here
- 13:32Speaker 4: and then we'll come back with this week's move. But
- 13:53Speaker 4: if you let.
- 13:54Speaker 7: Me lean on you, take my hand, I might get through.
- 13:58Speaker 4: It, through it.
- 13:59Speaker 7: I said baby, oh sweet baby, it's love that sets
- 14:04Speaker 7: us free.
- 14:06Speaker 4: And God knows if.
- 14:07Speaker 7: The world should end, your love is safe with me.
- 14:17Speaker 5: The whole family is getting together to show Dad how
- 14:20Speaker 5: much he's appreciated. It's so nice to have a man
- 14:23Speaker 5: around the house. But here's an extra surprise. Somebody's giving
- 14:27Speaker 5: the whole family.
- 14:28Speaker 4: To the most enjoyable gift of all. Get there.
- 14:31Speaker 5: Take Dad and the family on a pleasure-filled outing to
- 14:33Speaker 5: the movies at our special Father's Day show Sunday, June 21st.
- 14:37Speaker 4: Here's what I want you to do.
- 14:46Speaker 9: Just loan me two dollars Until.
- 14:50Speaker 6: The next time I.
- 14:52Speaker 10: See you But.
- 14:56Speaker 6: These last two dollars.
- 14:59Speaker 11: I'm not gonna lose These last two dollars I'm not
- 15:06Speaker 11: gonna lose One's.
- 15:09Speaker 4: Going for my bus fare For the one for the jukebox.
- 15:14Speaker 4: To hear me some blues.
- 15:17Speaker 6: Gotta hear me some blues. Tell them you want them.
- 15:19Speaker 12: Coming to your city.
- 15:21Speaker 4: Exactly. All the cities.
- 15:22Speaker 8: All the cities. Then we can go to all the shows.
- 15:24Speaker 6: Not all the shows, because some of them are just
- 15:25Speaker 6: too far away.
- 15:26Speaker 12: Well, they're going to get us a Learjet.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Some of the shows.
- 15:29Speaker 4: They're going to get us a Learjet. The Meltdown machine.
- 15:32Speaker 12: We've got the band version, so now we're going to
- 15:36Speaker 12: branch out into the Rockstar Learjet version.
- 15:40Speaker 4: That's happening. You just wait. Yeah, okay. I'm waiting.
- 15:44Speaker 12: Send in your $ 2 now, people.
- 15:47Speaker 4: By the way, is that too much to ask?
- 15:50Speaker 11: $ 2.
- 15:51Speaker 12: You're killing us.
- 15:52Speaker 5: $ 1.
- 15:52Speaker 4: 50. $ 3.
- 15:52Speaker 11: 50?
- 15:52Speaker 2: No, I don't even ask $ 3.

- 20:22Speaker 2: He's right over here.
- 20:23Speaker 6: We had to separate him from his fight with the
- 20:24Speaker 6: other inmates.
- 20:25Speaker 3: Hey, Donnie. Your father was a great man to me.
- 20:32Speaker 2: I don't know him. Ain't got nothing to do with me. Well,
- 20:35Speaker 2: I think you could be great, too.
- 20:40Speaker 4: So what made you want to fight?
- 20:43Speaker 6: My papa was a fighter.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Died before I was born.
- 20:46Speaker 6: Bounced around foster care, in and out of juvie.
- 20:48Speaker 4: I've been fighting my whole life. It's not a choice
- 20:54Speaker 4: for me.
- 20:54Speaker 3: You see this guy here standing back at you?
- 20:58Speaker 2: That's your toughest opponent.
- 20:59Speaker 6: Who's next?
- 21:03Speaker 2: I believe that's true in the ring, and I think
- 21:05Speaker 2: that's true in life. Boom!
- 21:07Speaker 6: Boom!
- 21:09Speaker 2: So you're gonna leave me too?
- 21:10Speaker 3: You know how many times I had to carry the
- 21:12Speaker 3: heavyweight champion of the world up these stairs because he
- 21:14Speaker 3: couldn't walk.
- 21:16Speaker 4: Ribs broken, nose broken, eyes swollen shut.
- 21:19Speaker 2: What are you afraid of?
- 21:20Speaker 6: I'm afraid of taking on the name and losing.
- 21:22Speaker 2: Call me a fraud. You're still caught in the shadow.
- 21:25Speaker 6: Every move that I make, every punch that I throw,
- 21:29Speaker 6: everything's gonna be compared to him. You are Apollo Creed's son,
- 21:33Speaker 6: so use the name.
- 21:34Speaker 4: It's yours.
- 21:39Speaker 6: This kid's being no way, he's never faced nobody.
- 21:43Speaker 4: You don't know nothing about me.
- 21:45Speaker 6: You a false creed.
- 21:47Speaker 2: You do this, you're going into a storm.
- 21:50Speaker 4: What's wrong with you?
- 21:51Speaker 6: Hey, hey, somebody help!
- 21:53Speaker 4: Rocky's sick. If I break, I ain't gonna fix it.
- 22:01Speaker 2: Everything I got is moved on, and I'm here.
- 22:04Speaker 4: Sitting there crying about nobody's around for you.
- 22:06Speaker 6: I'm here for you every day.
- 22:07Speaker 4: I'm standing right in front of.
- 22:10Speaker 7: You.
- 22:11Speaker 2: Just like any other fight.
- 22:12Speaker 4: So if I fight, you fight.
- 22:14Speaker 12: Bring back everything that's ever hurt you.
- 22:22Speaker 2: All the pain you had inside. They don't know what
- 22:29Speaker 2: we've been through.
- 22:31Speaker 6: You belong here.
- 22:36Speaker 1: I found life. I found life. I found life. The
- 22:56Speaker 1: fire There's something in your heart And this in.
- 23:02Speaker 10: Your eyes It's the fire Inside of you Let it.
- 23:09Speaker 7: Burn You don't say good luck You say don't give
- 23:14Speaker 7: up It's the fire Inside of you.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Let it burn!
- 23:21Speaker 9: Yeah, and if I'm ever at the crossroads And start
- 23:24Speaker 9: feeling mixed signals like Morse code My soul start to
- 23:27Speaker 9: grow colder than the North Pole I try to focus
- 23:30Speaker 9: on the whole of where the torch goes In the
- 23:32Speaker 9: tradition of these legendary sports pros As far as I
- 23:35Speaker 9: can see, I've made it to the threshold Lord knows
- 23:38Speaker 9: I waited for this a lifetime And I'm an icon
- 23:41Speaker 9: when I let my light shine Shine bright as an
- 23:44Speaker 9: example of a champion Taking the advantage, never copping out
- 23:47Speaker 9: or canceling Burn like a chariot, learn how to carry
- 23:51Speaker 9: it Maverick, always above and beyond average Fuel to the
- 23:54Speaker 9: flame that I train with and travel with Something in
- 23:57Speaker 9: my eyes say I'm so close to having a prize
- 23:59Speaker 9: I realize I'm supposed to reach for the skies Never
- 24:02Speaker 9: let somebody try to tell you otherwise That's.
- 24:05Speaker 4: Something interesting all right we are back and this week's
- 24:18Speaker 4: sofa theater feature is creed we'll get into the reasoning
- 24:23Speaker 4: in just a minute uh the year is 2015 the
- 24:26Speaker 4: director is ryan coogler and the plot according to imdb
- 24:31Speaker 4: The former heavyweight champion Rocky Balboa serves as a trainer
- 24:35Speaker 4: and mentor to Adonis Johnson, the son of his late
- 24:38Speaker 4: friend and former rival Apollo Creed. Not a bad breakdown, actually.
- 24:43Speaker 4: Usually it's a nightmare. That is pretty straightforward. First and foremost,
- 24:47Speaker 4: spoiler alert, we're going to ruin this. Hopefully by now
- 24:50Speaker 4: you've seen it. If not, go run out and watch
- 24:52Speaker 4: it right now. um and as far as why i
- 24:55Speaker 4: mean if you listen to our previous episode um you
- 25:00Speaker 4: are a huge rocky fan big fan so yeah i
- 25:03Speaker 4: figured at some point we'd have to get back into
- 25:06Speaker 4: the series whenever we could cross paths again so we
- 25:09Speaker 4: decided to bookend it yeah we're going the oldest last
- 25:12Speaker 4: time and the newest yeah we.
- 25:14Speaker 6: Did rocky the first time now creed Maybe we can
- 25:18Speaker 6: get in the rest of the sequels.
- 25:19Speaker 4: Through subsequent visits. We can bounce all over.
- 25:21Speaker 6: Over the course of like a decade.
- 25:22Speaker 4: Go in like the worst order.
- 25:24Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 25:25Speaker 4: The thing I was going to say, going in, I
- 25:28Speaker 4: realized as you pitched it like before this last week,
- 25:32Speaker 4: and then I'm like, okay, I should rewatch it because
- 25:34Speaker 4: I'd seen it. And then I was like, you know,
- 25:37Speaker 4: because I do remember when I watched it, I'm like,
- 25:40Speaker 4: as I got into Creed, the first time I watched it,
- 25:42Speaker 4: I was like, huh, I don't know some of these details. Yeah.
- 25:45Speaker 4: Because then I thought back and went, you know, I
- 25:47Speaker 4: never watched Rocky Balboa. Okay. For as much as I
- 25:50Speaker 4: liked all the previous ones growing up, like I'd never,
- 25:53Speaker 4: it just kind of came out and I missed it
- 25:55Speaker 4: and never got around to it. And I'm like, all right,
- 25:57Speaker 4: I know mostly character deaths and whatnot, but I'm just like,
- 26:00Speaker 4: I guess I should go ahead and know so I
- 26:03Speaker 4: can kind of accurately talk about this movie. So I
- 26:06Speaker 4: also watched Rocky Balboa this past week. Okay, nice. I'm also,
- 26:11Speaker 4: I guess, going to... Mostly because I feel like they're
- 26:13Speaker 4: kind of trying to hit the same notes and doing
- 26:17Speaker 4: it differently, I feel like. So I may kind of
- 26:20Speaker 4: compare and contrast with that one just because it's the
- 26:23Speaker 4: other most recent. It's really the only two that have
- 26:25Speaker 4: been kind of recent. Like even five is a pretty
- 26:28Speaker 4: far jump back.
- 26:29Speaker 6: I was like 91 or 90.
- 26:31Speaker 4: It's a long jump.
- 26:32Speaker 6: Yeah, these are the modern era Rockies, these two.
- 26:35Speaker 4: The closest thing we have. So... I don't know where.
- 26:39Speaker 4: I'll throw that out there at some point. But where
- 26:41Speaker 4: do you want to attack this from?
- 26:44Speaker 6: Oh, I don't know, man. I just wonder if you
- 26:46Speaker 6: liked it. Because to me, this is the hardest move
- 26:51Speaker 6: for a franchise to make. Which is, I mean, first
- 26:54Speaker 6: you have to make a movie that could be a franchise.
- 26:56Speaker 6: That's step one. That's the first hurdle. And then it's,
- 26:59Speaker 6: how many sequels can we make?
- 27:00Speaker 2: This, six.
- 27:02Speaker 6: Which is substantial already. And then it's like, okay, can
- 27:05Speaker 6: we transition... to a new kind of main character that's
- 27:09Speaker 6: just as likeable and enjoyable to watch as the one
- 27:13Speaker 6: that started it all. So we're in like the triple
- 27:17Speaker 6: part of the triple axel. Like the final move of
- 27:19Speaker 6: the franchise is like, can we hand this off?
- 27:22Speaker 4: And I think the potential ankle-breaking part of this triple
- 27:26Speaker 4: axel is hand it off to a new writer, a
- 27:29Speaker 4: new director, a new star in the process. So it's like, yes,
- 27:33Speaker 4: we've got the crossover character, But it's not even being
- 27:36Speaker 4: written by.
- 27:38Speaker 6: I mean, this.
- 27:38Speaker 4: Is kind of the only one that's not written by
- 27:41Speaker 4: Sylvester Stallone. Most of them were also directed by him.
- 27:45Speaker 4: So this is like a weird jump from that perspective.
- 27:49Speaker 4: And to, I guess, jump ahead to what I think
- 27:53Speaker 4: of it, it's amazing how good this is. It's crazy good.
- 27:57Speaker 4: To be able to pull off all of that stuff
- 27:59Speaker 4: in general. But on top of that, I just sat
- 28:02Speaker 4: there this last time and I'm just like, Damn, this
- 28:06Speaker 4: is like just kind of in disbelief of like the
- 28:10Speaker 4: fact that you can come into. This was the other
- 28:12Speaker 4: thing that was disturbing reading through like IMDb nonsense. They
- 28:17Speaker 4: said when because, you know, growing up and being like
- 28:19Speaker 4: super hardcore into this, especially like as they were still
- 28:22Speaker 4: kind of coming out or on cable all the time.
- 28:24Speaker 4: They said at the point of the tie in, I guess,
- 28:27Speaker 4: for this this current movie. The point in the world
- 28:32Speaker 4: when Apollo Creed supposedly dies in the real world timeline
- 28:36Speaker 4: of this universe.
- 28:37Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 28:38Speaker 4: Our director wasn't even born yet.
- 28:40Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 28:41Speaker 4: Like, I don't think I realized he was that young. Like,
- 28:43Speaker 4: I knew he was younger as a director, but I'm like,
- 28:46Speaker 4: he was not even born when the fourth movie was out.
- 28:50Speaker 6: I'm like, that's.
- 28:51Speaker 4: Almost weird to come into something that late in the
- 28:54Speaker 4: game and I guess discover.
- 28:55Speaker 6: All of it on.
- 28:57Speaker 4: DVD, probably not even VHS for him. So it's like
- 29:01Speaker 4: rediscovering that whole series and watching it with his family
- 29:05Speaker 4: and getting like, you know, I guess having that same
- 29:07Speaker 4: effect that all of us sort of grew up with
- 29:10Speaker 4: if you came in on that initial run.
- 29:12Speaker 5: So yeah.
- 29:13Speaker 4: That, I think, was really weird, too, because usually there's
- 29:16Speaker 4: a detach if you're not of that first era.
- 29:20Speaker 6: For sure.
- 29:20Speaker 4: Then you get what now people are complaining about with
- 29:23Speaker 4: Stranger Things, because it's that same. It's like, oh, these
- 29:26Speaker 4: guys are so 80s, except they're not. Again, they're that
- 29:28Speaker 4: same age. They grew up watching E.T., but it was
- 29:32Speaker 4: on cable 25 years after everybody else.
- 29:35Speaker 6: I mean, I think the thing that happens with Rocky,
- 29:38Speaker 6: which I think, if I remember correctly, Ryan Coogler says
- 29:41Speaker 6: in an interview, is that it's such like a it's
- 29:45Speaker 6: such like a, like a legacy film. Whereas like, I mean,
- 29:48Speaker 6: I was born in 84. So I think Rocky four
- 29:51Speaker 6: came out in 85. Yeah. So I almost missed most
- 29:54Speaker 6: of the series. And then my dad would show it
- 29:56Speaker 6: to me when I was like four or five, like
- 29:57Speaker 6: that's a movie that's like part of it. It's still
- 30:00Speaker 6: fun to watch when you're a kid, you might, you
- 30:02Speaker 6: definitely don't pick up the intricacies, but it's still fighting.
- 30:04Speaker 6: And like, I mean, in three, he's wrestling Hulk Hogan.
- 30:07Speaker 6: Like there's a lot to enjoy. So I think there's
- 30:10Speaker 6: probably a lot of fans of it that are my
- 30:11Speaker 6: age that were like, you said, like, Not even born
- 30:13Speaker 6: when the bulk of the.
- 30:14Speaker 4: Series aired originally.
- 30:16Speaker 6: I think the only one– I saw Rocky V in
- 30:19Speaker 6: the theater and I've seen obviously these other two. But, yeah,
- 30:22Speaker 6: I didn't see any of the other ones in the
- 30:23Speaker 6: theater ever.
- 30:24Speaker 4: It's– yeah, it's just kind of– and I think that
- 30:26Speaker 4: may be a huge part of it. Because even the
- 30:29Speaker 4: stuff with Ryan Coogler was– it was like– it was
- 30:32Speaker 4: a thing I watched with my family. It was like
- 30:34Speaker 4: a– something that I think kind of was bonding for them.
- 30:38Speaker 4: And I think that is part of it is, is
- 30:40Speaker 4: probably a, probably a lot of fathers and sons, which
- 30:43Speaker 4: certainly plays into this movie, but a family friendly kind
- 30:47Speaker 4: of thing. It's, it's never really kind of crosses the
- 30:49Speaker 4: line into something you couldn't sit down. This is the
- 30:52Speaker 4: first one that's PG 13. Yeah. They throw a F
- 30:55Speaker 4: word in there somewhere along the way and bump themselves
- 30:57Speaker 4: up to 13. But other than that, like they're all
- 31:00Speaker 4: still pretty family friendly for kids. So it's, I think that, yeah,
- 31:05Speaker 4: that is part of it, but it is it to me,
- 31:07Speaker 4: that was, I think surprising was him being able to
- 31:10Speaker 4: kind of get into that groove of, and probably just
- 31:12Speaker 4: shows how strong a storyteller and a director he is
- 31:16Speaker 4: that like, it's still like falls into the groove of
- 31:20Speaker 4: a Rocky film, but completely on its own terms. Like
- 31:26Speaker 4: it does its own version of everything. And it does
- 31:30Speaker 4: it with, A very strong lead that doesn't feel like
- 31:33Speaker 4: a Rocky copy.
- 31:34Speaker 12: No.
- 31:34Speaker 4: He's definitely his own character and even surrounded by other stuff. Like,
- 31:40Speaker 4: Tessa is amazing in this. Yeah. And, again, you would
- 31:44Speaker 4: expect a generic girlfriend role. And, like, she is... Her
- 31:48Speaker 4: own woman. And, like, in particular, like, I feel like he's...
- 31:51Speaker 4: In the beginning, he's almost latching on to her. Like,
- 31:54Speaker 4: she's way more up and coming. He's a nobody that, like,
- 31:58Speaker 4: just happened to move into the building. But, like, she's
- 32:00Speaker 4: already kind of established herself in what she wants to
- 32:03Speaker 4: do in life. And, like, he's just sort of, you know,
- 32:06Speaker 4: had things gone different. Some bum without a real job that, like,
- 32:10Speaker 4: wants to be her boyfriend. For sure.
- 32:12Speaker 6: Yeah. I think, yeah, that's the best way to put
- 32:15Speaker 6: it is that... And I think... that that's probably what
- 32:20Speaker 6: rocky five which is probably the worst rocky suffers from
- 32:23Speaker 6: is that he kind of just takes on this fighter
- 32:27Speaker 6: as like a mentee and he kind of just trains
- 32:30Speaker 6: him as like a copy of him and then again
- 32:33Speaker 6: as a viewer we're kind of supposed to root for
- 32:35Speaker 6: him in the same way and then the tension builds
- 32:37Speaker 6: because he doesn't want to be a copy so there
- 32:39Speaker 6: is that tension that he doesn't that dramatic tension that
- 32:42Speaker 6: he doesn't want to be a copy but again like
- 32:44Speaker 6: you said like That's kind of what they're trying to do.
- 32:47Speaker 6: And then in the end, he just becomes the villain
- 32:49Speaker 6: in the last half hour. In the third act, he switches.
- 32:52Speaker 6: But it's like you said, I think the smart thing
- 32:54Speaker 6: they did is kind of like, again, not even calling
- 32:57Speaker 6: it Rocky Jr. or Rocky the Next Generation. It's literally
- 32:59Speaker 6: like Creed. featuring rocky so it's like a strong like.
- 33:03Speaker 4: The rocky it's it's almost a reboot in a alternate
- 33:07Speaker 4: little area over here not a different timeline but a
- 33:10Speaker 4: different family you know it's.
- 33:11Speaker 6: It's honestly something more likely done in like a like
- 33:15Speaker 6: a like a fantasy franchise where they like you know
- 33:18Speaker 6: give the hobbits their own movie or something like it's
- 33:20Speaker 6: a character from the universe but we're gonna give them
- 33:23Speaker 6: in their own film and so you might get little
- 33:25Speaker 6: cameos because like i think i re-watched it a couple
- 33:28Speaker 6: days ago for this and which was maybe the third
- 33:30Speaker 6: or fourth time i'd seen it and um yeah i'm
- 33:33Speaker 6: just kind of like you know what he really rocky
- 33:35Speaker 6: really isn't in the movie a lot like they could
- 33:38Speaker 6: eventually phase him out and i would still enjoy this character.
- 33:41Speaker 4: In the series i think it could go on without
- 33:44Speaker 4: stallone it was one of those i wasn't sure when
- 33:46Speaker 4: we get into this it's like because they went through
- 33:48Speaker 4: that became almost a running gag of like And then
- 33:52Speaker 4: his mentor dies. It happened a couple of times in
- 33:55Speaker 4: a row. So I was like, are we going to
- 33:57Speaker 4: play that card again here?
- 34:00Speaker 6: And again, that's another thing that's so smart about the movie,
- 34:03Speaker 6: I think, is that as a Rocky fan, I think
- 34:06Speaker 6: the sentiment has been held by a lot of us
- 34:09Speaker 6: which is like we do not want to see him
- 34:11Speaker 6: die on screen like he's too much of a character
- 34:13Speaker 6: but you're right like it's almost kind of like if
- 34:16Speaker 6: he now becomes the mentor and dies as the mentor
- 34:19Speaker 6: to kind of inspire his like carry on you know
- 34:22Speaker 6: his the person he's mentoring like it's like oh well
- 34:25Speaker 6: then like you've kind of come full circle so now
- 34:28Speaker 6: your death is kind of it it has like a
- 34:31Speaker 6: dramatic purpose as opposed to just like a way to
- 34:34Speaker 6: like just end this series.
- 34:35Speaker 4: Which is kind of what he kept wanting in fact
- 34:38Speaker 4: that's what five was supposed to be wasn't it he
- 34:40Speaker 4: wanted him to die in the street in the middle
- 34:42Speaker 4: of that street fight at the end and like i
- 34:44Speaker 4: was like what a terrible way to you know i
- 34:47Speaker 4: could see like a studio exec wanting to do that
- 34:49Speaker 4: but like this is your baby you care created this
- 34:52Speaker 4: character You've nurtured him through all these movies, and then
- 34:55Speaker 4: you want to... I mean, I get it, I guess, for.
- 34:57Speaker 6: Some sort of like... And I think he wanted him
- 34:58Speaker 6: to die in Balboa, too, but for a shorter period
- 35:01Speaker 6: of time, because I think I heard him say something
- 35:02Speaker 6: eventually that was like... Yeah, I mean, I toyed with it,
- 35:05Speaker 6: but it was so hard to even... To conceive of
- 35:10Speaker 6: in Rocky V, I got so much backlash, I pretty
- 35:12Speaker 6: much knew that I wasn't going to be able to
- 35:13Speaker 6: do it in VI.
- 35:15Speaker 4: So.
- 35:15Speaker 6: Yeah, I think, but he could easily die now and
- 35:17Speaker 6: it would be fine. I know they're making a second
- 35:19Speaker 6: one that's supposed to come out this Thanksgiving.
- 35:22Speaker 4: I wasn't sure.
- 35:22Speaker 6: And I know he's supposed to be in that.
- 35:24Speaker 4: Is Coogler still?
- 35:26Speaker 6: Coogler is not. That worries me a little. He's so
- 35:30Speaker 6: damn good. That totally worries me. Because he, I think
- 35:33Speaker 6: it was because of Black Panther.
- 35:35Speaker 4: That's why I was like, at the time when I
- 35:37Speaker 4: first saw this, I was like, obviously they're kind of,
- 35:40Speaker 4: planning to do something else with this character yeah and
- 35:43Speaker 4: then i was like he got greenlit for at least
- 35:46Speaker 4: tapped to bring on the marvel world and i was
- 35:49Speaker 4: like oh yeah he might be too big like he might.
- 35:51Speaker 6: Move on he got black panther and i think honestly
- 35:54Speaker 6: at the time it was it was just a scheduling
- 35:56Speaker 6: conflict yeah and i mean good for kugler i think
- 35:59Speaker 6: he made the right move it's like the biggest movie
- 36:01Speaker 6: of the last couple years.
- 36:02Speaker 4: Oh yeah it's and it's and it's really good too
- 36:05Speaker 4: like yeah i enjoyed it i didn't see that one
- 36:07Speaker 4: too brings our same yeah brings our same actor in
- 36:09Speaker 4: and you're like watching him like damn he's good in
- 36:12Speaker 4: this too.
- 36:12Speaker 6: He's so good me and my wife were talking about
- 36:14Speaker 6: that because she was in the room when i was
- 36:16Speaker 6: re-watching it and we were talking about how when we
- 36:18Speaker 6: saw black panther it was just like um i can't
- 36:21Speaker 6: who kind of steals the show he's way too he's
- 36:25Speaker 6: way too careful michael b jordan is like the most
- 36:27Speaker 6: charismatic person And I was like, I just, it was like, yeah,
- 36:31Speaker 6: he really stole the kind of heat from, what's the
- 36:34Speaker 6: actor that plays Black Panther? Chadwick?
- 36:37Speaker 5: Or is that?
- 36:37Speaker 4: Chadwick Boseman?
- 36:38Speaker 6: That's a different guy, right?
- 36:39Speaker 4: I think it's Chadwick Boseman.
- 36:41Speaker 3: Okay.
- 36:41Speaker 6: And he was fine.
- 36:42Speaker 4: He was great. He's good, but that's the thing.
- 36:44Speaker 6: He's so. Michael B. Jordan's just so good.
- 36:46Speaker 4: He's so straight laced. It's like he had, there's no,
- 36:49Speaker 4: like the only, the only comedic fun we have in
- 36:52Speaker 4: that movie is his little sister's awesome.
- 36:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 36:54Speaker 4: But like, he's so like, which I guess you'd need
- 36:57Speaker 4: to be as like leader of a nation.
- 36:59Speaker 3: Right.
- 37:00Speaker 4: And like, you know, you're, you're the superhero protecting everyone
- 37:03Speaker 4: and you're kind of the president of everything. It's like,
- 37:05Speaker 4: I guess you can't be a goofball all day long,
- 37:08Speaker 4: but like, He's just so straight-laced about it that you
- 37:11Speaker 4: don't have the fun that you do in a lot
- 37:13Speaker 4: of other Marvel movies. So then you have this super
- 37:16Speaker 4: charismatic villain come along who also isn't totally a villain.
- 37:20Speaker 4: He becomes a villain by the end. He certainly kills
- 37:23Speaker 4: a lot of people, but he's pretty redeemable in a
- 37:27Speaker 4: lot of moments.
- 37:28Speaker 6: Me and a friend used him as an example of
- 37:31Speaker 6: the idea of a lot of villains, both in real
- 37:34Speaker 6: life history and in movies, It's like that's what's so
- 37:37Speaker 6: interesting about them is like their vision is actually kind
- 37:42Speaker 6: of positive.
- 37:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 37:43Speaker 6: But they're like, but also I have to kill 10
- 37:45Speaker 6: million people to do it. So it's like that's what
- 37:48Speaker 6: makes them evil. But honestly, like there's very few villains
- 37:51Speaker 6: in real life that are like just purely like selfish
- 37:54Speaker 6: like like like we've talked like about a hitler who's
- 37:57Speaker 6: like look guys i'm gonna create the perfect race you're
- 38:00Speaker 6: all gonna love this when i'm done with it just
- 38:02Speaker 6: let me finish yeah you know but which is like
- 38:04Speaker 6: because we're joking because it's like so german like people
- 38:07Speaker 6: engineered the roads and then people engineered the cause then
- 38:10Speaker 6: people engineered the people and it's like no too far
- 38:12Speaker 6: germany you got great cars and roads you went too
- 38:16Speaker 6: far you got too german and yeah he's exactly like
- 38:19Speaker 6: that he's like We should bring up our own people
- 38:22Speaker 6: and we should introduce ourselves to the world and also
- 38:25Speaker 6: burn all these plants and kill everyone that doesn't agree.
- 38:28Speaker 6: We need to revenge everyone. Then it always goes too far.
- 38:32Speaker 6: He was great and he's great in this.
- 38:34Speaker 4: That's, again, it just reminded me when you were talking,
- 38:37Speaker 4: I guess it is the closest thing to compare in
- 38:39Speaker 4: the series is more like Five. It's the only time
- 38:42Speaker 4: he's not the main fighter in it. It's the only
- 38:44Speaker 4: time he's kind of got someone under his wing sort
- 38:46Speaker 4: of a thing. And I think that's the major difference
- 38:50Speaker 4: because I don't remember a ton of about Five. Yeah.
- 38:53Speaker 4: Except that Tommy Gunn is not a charismatic character. He
- 38:58Speaker 4: just seems like such a doofus and like. The whole movie,
- 39:01Speaker 4: you're just like, this is what you're going to hitch
- 39:03Speaker 4: your wagon to?
- 39:04Speaker 6: It was a weird pick.
- 39:06Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a strange character anyway, and he's just a
- 39:11Speaker 4: very weird performance. So, like, when you jump to this
- 39:14Speaker 4: and you're like, oh, no. I mean, not only do
- 39:17Speaker 4: I buy him as a fighter, I buy him being
- 39:20Speaker 4: as driven as he is and also having that mentality of, like,
- 39:26Speaker 4: this chip on his shoulder in general. But on top
- 39:28Speaker 4: of that, the... i buy him as apollo's kid like
- 39:32Speaker 4: he really sort of pulls off i you know i
- 39:34Speaker 4: feel like he did go back and watch a ton
- 39:36Speaker 4: of like those middle couple movies there to like get
- 39:39Speaker 4: a feel of the the super likable and charismatic version
- 39:43Speaker 4: of carl weathers because um He's so likable.
- 39:46Speaker 6: He definitely takes on, like, yeah, that charisma that, yeah,
- 39:51Speaker 6: Apollo had. And also, like, yeah, passes the eye test.
- 39:54Speaker 6: I mean, I think there's that scene where Rocky says, like,
- 39:56Speaker 6: I see the resemblance. And it's like, yeah, you do
- 39:58Speaker 6: look enough like him that it's viable that you could
- 40:01Speaker 6: be his kid. So it all works in that way.
- 40:04Speaker 6: Especially with, like, the casting of Alicia Rashad as the mom.
- 40:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:09Speaker 6: I was like, yeah, I could, like, a little bit
- 40:11Speaker 6: of her, a little bit of Carl Weathers. Like, yeah,
- 40:13Speaker 6: I could see it. It's pretty good. Pretty good casting,
- 40:17Speaker 6: even on just that aspect.
- 40:18Speaker 4: Although she wasn't really the mom.
- 40:20Speaker 6: She was not the original.
- 40:21Speaker 4: It is one of those, like, I kind of like that, too,
- 40:23Speaker 4: that they don't even really overly explain that. Like, you're
- 40:27Speaker 4: halfway in the movie before you really go, okay, that's
- 40:30Speaker 4: kind of what I was thinking. But, like, they didn't
- 40:32Speaker 4: just spell it out from the beginning. And kind of, like,
- 40:35Speaker 4: seems like that's one of those going... Man, that's a
- 40:37Speaker 4: pretty awesome move for her as a character. I'm like,
- 40:41Speaker 4: you're already set, you've got your whole life, you've got
- 40:44Speaker 4: this huge house that your husband has now left to you.
- 40:47Speaker 4: You could just go on and be selfish the rest
- 40:49Speaker 4: of your life, but I guess because there's this little
- 40:52Speaker 4: piece of him that you miss and you want to
- 40:54Speaker 4: take care of that, this is kind of the... I
- 40:58Speaker 4: guess he had another kid somewhere, but... before, didn't he?
- 41:01Speaker 4: He had kids with her.
- 41:02Speaker 6: I know in 2.
- 41:03Speaker 4: They mention his youngest son.
- 41:07Speaker 6: In Rocky 2, they show him at his house and
- 41:09Speaker 6: I believe he has two kids, a son and a daughter.
- 41:12Speaker 4: So it's not like there's no other legend left.
- 41:15Speaker 6: And then again, if we're doing movie canon, I think
- 41:18Speaker 6: 2 would have taken place like Five years before four.
- 41:22Speaker 6: So those kids might be like 10, 13 years older
- 41:26Speaker 6: than him. Than this kid, yeah. So they're probably like
- 41:29Speaker 6: in their 30s if he's in his 20s.
- 41:31Speaker 4: But yeah, I'm just like most people, like when you
- 41:34Speaker 4: break down that scenario, I'm like, would you go and
- 41:37Speaker 4: do that? Like not only just randomly take... The child
- 41:42Speaker 4: of your spouse went and slept with someone else, had
- 41:46Speaker 4: a child, didn't bother to tell you, and then not
- 41:49Speaker 4: only are you not taking care of them, but... you're
- 41:52Speaker 4: also like, this is a troubled kid. Like he's, he's
- 41:56Speaker 4: already dealing with a lot of stuff and has had
- 41:59Speaker 4: a rough life. So it may not be the easiest transition.
- 42:01Speaker 4: So I'm just like, man, that's a, that's a pretty,
- 42:04Speaker 4: pretty bold move for her.
- 42:06Speaker 6: I think it's cool. I think, you know, it's a, yeah,
- 42:09Speaker 6: I don't know. I think it's just kind of that
- 42:12Speaker 6: thing of like, you know, they say that his mom,
- 42:15Speaker 6: you know, they insinuate that she had died and that's
- 42:17Speaker 6: why he was in these like group homes situations. And then,
- 42:20Speaker 6: I don't know, I think it just seems like she
- 42:22Speaker 6: felt like, you know, he was part of him, so
- 42:26Speaker 6: he deserves some of what the legacy is in terms of, like,
- 42:29Speaker 6: support and stuff. But I agree, that's still a strong move.
- 42:34Speaker 6: It's a character move, for sure. But yeah, yeah.
- 42:38Speaker 4: And then not, you know, being so steadfast of like
- 42:42Speaker 4: not wanting him to do, like to learn from his father's,
- 42:46Speaker 4: whether you want to call them mistakes, like he made
- 42:47Speaker 4: a fortune, but he sacrificed himself in the process. So
- 42:51Speaker 4: like getting him to go get his nice little office
- 42:54Speaker 4: job there, which that's what I think is kind of
- 42:57Speaker 4: cool that like that's part of him pulling off that,
- 43:00Speaker 4: you know, not only is he a fighter, He's Apollo's
- 43:03Speaker 4: kid that, like, it was just ingrained in his DNA that, like,
- 43:07Speaker 4: even before he knew really anything, he was in poems just...
- 43:12Speaker 4: You see that shot of him as a kid and
- 43:13Speaker 4: he just snaps and, like, I'm going to beat this
- 43:16Speaker 4: kid's ass. And, like, it's built into him. And even then,
- 43:20Speaker 4: it's like when... when they go, like, you jump to
- 43:23Speaker 4: him going to jail later, and it's like he's in
- 43:25Speaker 4: a cell by himself, because he was getting in fights
- 43:27Speaker 4: with the other guys in the holding cell. It's like
- 43:31Speaker 4: everywhere he goes, like, somebody rubs him the wrong way,
- 43:34Speaker 4: and he just snaps and just wants to, that's his
- 43:36Speaker 4: immediate move, is like, I'm going to beat your ass. Like,
- 43:39Speaker 4: he is a fighter born and bred.
- 43:41Speaker 6: And I think it's always, I think, you know, what
- 43:43Speaker 6: Sylvester Stallone with the Rocky series has done so well,
- 43:47Speaker 6: at least most of the time, is kind of like,
- 43:50Speaker 6: finding new ways to make rocky the underdog when like
- 43:55Speaker 6: he's obviously progressing so the first two it's the easiest
- 43:59Speaker 6: because it's standard underdog it's like this is the champ
- 44:02Speaker 6: are you as good as the champ you're not the
- 44:03Speaker 6: champ you're the underdog but then it's like then he
- 44:05Speaker 6: becomes really successful but it's like you're too successful it's
- 44:08Speaker 6: making you soft you're getting soft and lazy and then
- 44:11Speaker 6: four it's like you know like you're you're successful but
- 44:14Speaker 6: like this guy's this dragon guy he's big and then
- 44:17Speaker 6: five stinks and then six is like You're old. You're old.
- 44:20Speaker 6: You might be too old to fight. And then it's
- 44:22Speaker 6: the same thing. Like, this kid, we shouldn't, again, on paper,
- 44:26Speaker 6: really shouldn't root for him, right? Like, he grew up rich. Like,
- 44:29Speaker 6: I mean, once he got out of the group.
- 44:30Speaker 4: Once he, yeah.
- 44:31Speaker 6: He grew up rich. He has this job. He's about
- 44:33Speaker 6: to get a promotion when he quits the job. Like,
- 44:35Speaker 6: he has a mom that loves him. Like, you know,
- 44:38Speaker 6: and that's, I love, though, that the whole time, like,
- 44:40Speaker 6: literally everyone he goes to goes, like, I did this
- 44:43Speaker 6: because I had to. You don't have to. So you shouldn't.
- 44:46Speaker 6: No one should do this if they don't have to.
- 44:48Speaker 6: And then him kind of saying, like, I do have to.
- 44:51Speaker 6: You had to because you were broke, but I have
- 44:53Speaker 6: to because it's in me.
- 44:54Speaker 4: In me, yeah.
- 44:55Speaker 6: So you might not see it, but we are the same.
- 44:58Speaker 6: You had to for different reasons than I have to,
- 45:01Speaker 6: but there's still a have there. And, I mean, he
- 45:04Speaker 6: kind of convinces everyone he comes across, and then, like,
- 45:08Speaker 6: I think he does, like you said, convince the viewer
- 45:10Speaker 6: that it is something in him. And then that makes
- 45:12Speaker 6: you root for, again, someone that you maybe on paper
- 45:16Speaker 6: wouldn't root for. He's like, why am I rooting for
- 45:17Speaker 6: this kid who has, like, You know, he's a... You know,
- 45:20Speaker 6: because we always think, like, oh, you're the son of...
- 45:22Speaker 6: Your life must be easy. Not only the money, but
- 45:24Speaker 6: the fame recognition. And so he kind of competes through
- 45:27Speaker 6: all that and makes it a detriment that you root for.
- 45:31Speaker 6: So it's great storytelling, good acting for that.
- 45:33Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that has to be, like, already in
- 45:36Speaker 4: the writing from the get-go. And then the performance, you know,
- 45:40Speaker 4: our creed is, like, so damn, like, determined that you
- 45:44Speaker 4: buy into that. The other thing that I was, like, as...
- 45:48Speaker 4: as we get into this and I think it's, and
- 45:51Speaker 4: I don't want to speak ill of Balboa, the, the,
- 45:55Speaker 4: the last movie, but I'm like, it's mostly because it's like,
- 45:59Speaker 4: and it's weird that like that movie, Rocky Balboa is
- 46:03Speaker 4: written by Stallone, but I'm like, I'm looking at this going,
- 46:07Speaker 4: Rocky is written so much better in this movie. And,
- 46:10Speaker 4: and again, I, I love what he's doing in the series,
- 46:13Speaker 4: but I'm just like, he, he still comes off as
- 46:16Speaker 4: almost just sort of like, just sort of sad and
- 46:20Speaker 4: lame in the, in Rocky Balboa and like sort of
- 46:23Speaker 4: just rehash of the same thing, but kind of like
- 46:27Speaker 4: still seeming kind of dumb. Like, you know, it's like, I.
- 46:30Speaker 6: Think you sometimes need to, You need someone that's not invested.
- 46:35Speaker 4: I think he was too far in.
- 46:38Speaker 6: You need someone with a little perspective. And I think
- 46:41Speaker 6: whatever Coogler had in terms of perspective worked well. Because
- 46:45Speaker 6: I agree. I mean, Sylvester Stallone won the Golden Globe
- 46:48Speaker 6: because I think, like you said, it's not like his
- 46:51Speaker 6: performance was anything crazy better than anything he had done before.
- 46:55Speaker 6: But it was just, I think, for the first time
- 46:57Speaker 6: since the first one, he had this great written take
- 47:00Speaker 6: that he could put the character on i think it's
- 47:02Speaker 6: what was written that drove his performance because he can
- 47:05Speaker 6: play rocky in his sleep but he needs material yeah
- 47:09Speaker 6: do it like at a level where you'd be like
- 47:11Speaker 6: winning an award.
- 47:11Speaker 4: For it and i feel like that's what it was
- 47:13Speaker 4: in rocky bell but it was almost like sleepwalking through
- 47:15Speaker 4: that it's like i've done this so many times and
- 47:17Speaker 4: it almost just felt like again that was sort of
- 47:19Speaker 4: the book in at the time like i just need
- 47:21Speaker 4: to cap this off like he didn't die in the Yeah.
- 47:24Speaker 4: And I feel like people still need something to be like, well,
- 47:26Speaker 4: whatever happened to him? So like, it feels like they
- 47:29Speaker 4: want it to be the hard end. So it really
- 47:31Speaker 4: like even he was like, I don't really need to
- 47:34Speaker 4: do this when because Kugler came to him and was like,
- 47:37Speaker 4: we're working on this, you know, screenplay, you know, we
- 47:39Speaker 4: want you involved, obviously. And he's like, I don't know
- 47:42Speaker 4: that I need to do this, which really would be
- 47:44Speaker 4: the smart move. Like, I would not, if you, like,
- 47:47Speaker 4: pitched this idea to me years ago before this got made,
- 47:51Speaker 4: I would be like, oh, no, don't, no, don't do that.
- 47:53Speaker 6: Yeah, for sure.
- 47:54Speaker 4: And, like, it's just, I guess, the same thing with Stallone.
- 47:57Speaker 4: He just looked at the screenplay and went, okay, man, like,
- 47:59Speaker 4: this is... Because that, I think, is the difference. Like,
- 48:02Speaker 4: I feel like nothing really interesting happens in Rocky Balboa.
- 48:07Speaker 4: It's just sort of finishing off the storyline that we
- 48:10Speaker 4: already knew, kind of figured it would go down that road.
- 48:13Speaker 6: It's another Rocky movie. If you like Rocky movies or
- 48:16Speaker 6: if you just like sports movies, you'll like it, but
- 48:18Speaker 6: it's not groundbreaking.
- 48:20Speaker 4: I mean, and truthfully, it almost gets so unoriginal in
- 48:23Speaker 4: that second half because then it just, it also, it's
- 48:26Speaker 4: kind of ridiculous. Like, old are you like nobody's letting
- 48:30Speaker 4: you back like the board is right to not let
- 48:32Speaker 4: you pass like you're way too old to get in
- 48:35Speaker 4: the ring with somebody half your age way stronger than
- 48:38Speaker 4: you like so it is the it does seem a
- 48:40Speaker 4: little preposterous as it goes on where we never get
- 48:43Speaker 4: into that area here he knows he's too old by
- 48:45Speaker 4: this movie but it's also just written to me so
- 48:48Speaker 4: differently like he just still kind of seems like because
- 48:52Speaker 4: it's even in the first one like you go back
- 48:54Speaker 4: to there he's not super smart as a character but
- 48:58Speaker 4: he's very street wise and then as it goes on
- 49:01Speaker 4: he gets kind of wise just because he's lived and
- 49:04Speaker 4: like but i don't feel like we get any of
- 49:06Speaker 4: that in rocky babo he just kind of says the
- 49:07Speaker 4: same rocky things most of the time where this like
- 49:11Speaker 4: you get the like weathered wisdom that he's just like
- 49:16Speaker 4: everything he says is just so i've been there like
- 49:20Speaker 4: this this thing you're going through i've been down that
- 49:22Speaker 4: road and i can tell you why it's not gonna
- 49:24Speaker 4: work i.
- 49:24Speaker 6: Think that is maybe the perspective that was needed in
- 49:28Speaker 6: terms of like kind of like you said like the
- 49:31Speaker 6: character in rocky balboa is kind of in too many
- 49:34Speaker 6: ways not exactly like i don't think it's a an
- 49:37Speaker 6: ultimately flawed performance but why it has a few flaws
- 49:40Speaker 6: is because ultimately there's too much that's the same as
- 49:43Speaker 6: the rocky rocky one which is like a young man
- 49:46Speaker 6: and now he's an old man so you would think
- 49:48Speaker 6: he'd know different things he'd act certain ways that are
- 49:51Speaker 6: different and i think like like i said again talking
- 49:54Speaker 6: about like bringing it full circle both his life and
- 49:57Speaker 6: and all that stuff it's like interesting because i'm like
- 50:01Speaker 6: In Creed, he's kind of mean and short. And I
- 50:05Speaker 6: feel like in the previous movies, he was always kind
- 50:07Speaker 6: of affable. Like you said, dumb, like a puppy kind
- 50:11Speaker 6: of energy.
- 50:11Speaker 4: That's what I'm saying.
- 50:12Speaker 6: He seemed a little dumber than he should. For being
- 50:14Speaker 6: a fighter, he was never really violent. But I think
- 50:17Speaker 6: in this one, he's kind of mean and short. And
- 50:20Speaker 6: I think I'm like, yeah, because he's becoming the Mickey.
- 50:24Speaker 6: Mickey was mean because he's like, look, I've fucking done everything.
- 50:28Speaker 6: I've been... You know, he tells that story in Rocky 1, like,
- 50:31Speaker 6: some guy put a nail in his glove and poked
- 50:33Speaker 6: holes in his cheek, so he's like, you know, I was, like,
- 50:35Speaker 6: gonna be the best, too, and then it didn't work out,
- 50:37Speaker 6: and now I hate every... You know, I'm just jaded
- 50:40Speaker 6: and mean, and Rocky had more success than we're led
- 50:43Speaker 6: to believe the Mickey character did, but you could still see, again, like,
- 50:47Speaker 6: he's a guy that, like, yeah, those posters on the wall,
- 50:50Speaker 6: that's me. That's my future.
- 50:51Speaker 4: It's over.
- 50:52Speaker 6: Like, everyone I love is gone. Like, I'm not gonna
- 50:54Speaker 6: be affable and dopey. I'm gonna be kind of sad
- 50:57Speaker 6: and angry at the world, and, like... So that's like,
- 51:00Speaker 6: and it's like you said, that's how you should be. Like,
- 51:02Speaker 6: you shouldn't be the same. You should be different. And
- 51:04Speaker 6: he is. And I think, yeah, that writing really works well,
- 51:07Speaker 6: kind of making him like a little mean. Because it's like, yeah,
- 51:09Speaker 6: you're in your 60s. You should be upset.
- 51:11Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 51:12Speaker 4: I don't know if he's ever fully mean.
- 51:14Speaker 6: I wouldn't say mean.
- 51:15Speaker 4: But like, the short part is like, he's just like,
- 51:18Speaker 4: and also you really start to feel like like somebody
- 51:22Speaker 4: who's been a pretty huge celebrity. Like they've kind of
- 51:25Speaker 4: dealt with that throughout the whole series. Cause Apollo had
- 51:27Speaker 4: that going in the earlier movies. And then you see like,
- 51:30Speaker 4: they kind of throw that out there. Like it's sort
- 51:33Speaker 4: of what they supposed to deal with in Rocky Balboa,
- 51:35Speaker 4: but they don't really. With this one, it feels like
- 51:38Speaker 4: everybody either, like he can't have a minute's peace because
- 51:41Speaker 4: Hey Rock, Hey Rock, like everywhere he goes. So he
- 51:44Speaker 4: can't ever like fade into the background. He's always still
- 51:47Speaker 4: that persona.
- 51:47Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 51:48Speaker 4: But at the same time, everybody always has a chip
- 51:51Speaker 4: on their shoulder. Oh, you still think you're the champ, huh?
- 51:53Speaker 4: Like they always want to give him shit. And everybody
- 51:56Speaker 4: kind of wants something from him, which is also why
- 51:58Speaker 4: I'm assuming he probably is pretty guarded when his kid
- 52:01Speaker 4: shows up out of nowhere. And he's like, look, just
- 52:03Speaker 4: trying to leech off my legacy.
- 52:04Speaker 6: I get it.
- 52:05Speaker 4: Like many kids have tried, you know, so it's like.
- 52:08Speaker 4: and like you get the the guy at the gym
- 52:10Speaker 4: there that's just like i've been trying to get you
- 52:12Speaker 4: to back my kid for years now you see like
- 52:15Speaker 4: immediately gets pissed yeah because he's just like this kid
- 52:18Speaker 4: comes up out of nowhere and all of a sudden
- 52:19Speaker 4: you're back in the limelight like what so i think
- 52:22Speaker 4: that's one of those like you feel all along the
- 52:24Speaker 4: way like he used to just sort of go into
- 52:27Speaker 4: it so like okay like even paulie like in balboa
- 52:30Speaker 4: he's like hey i can make some more money off
- 52:32Speaker 4: of merchandise he's like okay he just shrugs and like
- 52:35Speaker 4: lets him make money off of it and i'm like
- 52:37Speaker 4: you should be so angry at Pauly in.
- 52:39Speaker 6: General by now.
- 52:41Speaker 4: And he just lets it go because it's Pauly. But here,
- 52:44Speaker 4: I feel like he feels like the world is kind
- 52:47Speaker 4: of against him. You really do just kind of feel
- 52:49Speaker 4: that I'm an old guy now. I can't fight anymore.
- 52:52Speaker 4: I can't do the thing I'm meant to do. even when,
- 52:54Speaker 4: you know, in, in this capacity, everybody's trying to use me.
- 52:57Speaker 4: Everybody's got a different business deal. That's going to make
- 53:00Speaker 4: them a fortune and probably make little to nothing for us.
- 53:03Speaker 4: So it's like, you really do kind of feel that. Like,
- 53:05Speaker 4: I think it is the jaded part more than me.
- 53:08Speaker 4: He's just like, everybody wants something from me. Everybody's trying
- 53:11Speaker 4: to use me for something that like you should have
- 53:13Speaker 4: gotten in Balboa, but I don't think you do.
- 53:15Speaker 6: Yeah, for sure. And like, you know, there's always that
- 53:18Speaker 6: like famous line and, think uh in five because i
- 53:22Speaker 6: don't think it's from one of the movies but besides
- 53:25Speaker 6: five but it's like you see like a flashback and
- 53:28Speaker 6: you hear like mickey kind of like tell rocky like
- 53:32Speaker 6: oh you know i think people die when they don't
- 53:33Speaker 6: want to live anymore you give me a reason to
- 53:35Speaker 6: keep going to see you do well and yeah i
- 53:37Speaker 6: think that's again that's that we see that's what their
- 53:40Speaker 6: relationship is him and adonis creed is this thing of
- 53:43Speaker 6: like well now i have something to do like i
- 53:45Speaker 6: lost my best friend I lost my wife. I kind
- 53:48Speaker 6: of run this restaurant. But it's not like that's my
- 53:51Speaker 6: passion is food. And he doesn't even do that.
- 53:54Speaker 4: It's like he just comes in to hang around and
- 53:56Speaker 4: host it more or less. But it's not like he's
- 53:58Speaker 4: back there making food every day.
- 54:00Speaker 1: Right.
- 54:00Speaker 6: And it's like, well, and I lost boxing. Because eventually everyone,
- 54:03Speaker 6: all athletes lose their craft because you can only do
- 54:06Speaker 6: it so long. And then it's like saying like, all right,
- 54:08Speaker 6: you've given me something. And kind of like dealing with that.
- 54:12Speaker 6: Because it's like that's a struggle. It's like he's almost
- 54:14Speaker 6: fighting against. this this reconciliation he's clearly made that it's
- 54:19Speaker 6: like all right well now me soon i'll be gone
- 54:21Speaker 6: soon and this is kind of the last days of
- 54:23Speaker 6: me i'm circling the drain and then you have this
- 54:25Speaker 6: kid going like no you got like good good years
- 54:28Speaker 6: left like and it's kind of it like you know
- 54:30Speaker 6: there's that big climatic scene in the locker room where
- 54:32Speaker 6: he's like essentially struggling with that kind of being like
- 54:35Speaker 6: you're right but also but i've you know it doesn't
- 54:38Speaker 6: matter if you're right because i've already reconciled that's the
- 54:40Speaker 6: end so I'll stick around as long as I can,
- 54:43Speaker 6: but as soon as I die, I'm not trying. You know,
- 54:45Speaker 6: I'll teach you all I'm here, but then I'm gone.
- 54:47Speaker 6: I've made a commitment to, like, the past, basically. Like,
- 54:50Speaker 6: I'm going to go die and see my wife. That's
- 54:52Speaker 6: who I'm committed to, not you. And then he kind
- 54:54Speaker 6: of realizes, like, that's kind of stupid.
- 54:57Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, but I think people get like that, too.
- 55:00Speaker 3: For sure.
- 55:00Speaker 4: So, again, that's why it does have such a real
- 55:04Speaker 4: aspect to this one that, like, is kind of missing
- 55:07Speaker 4: from Balboa is like, it's, it does feel like, cause he,
- 55:10Speaker 4: he does seem like sad and kind of lonely in Balboa.
- 55:13Speaker 4: That is like the, the opening of that one's pretty
- 55:15Speaker 4: effective of him just like going through and kind of
- 55:19Speaker 4: a cheap move really from, from the writing standpoint of like,
- 55:22Speaker 4: we're going to revisit everything that we saw in the,
- 55:24Speaker 4: in the first movie. So it really is sort of
- 55:26Speaker 4: trying to bookend everything there. And like so much though
- 55:29Speaker 4: that like, here's where the ice skating rink was and
- 55:32Speaker 4: here's where, you know, all is going through all the
- 55:34Speaker 4: scenes in that first movie almost. again, maybe the best,
- 55:38Speaker 4: second best little part of the movie there is, is
- 55:40Speaker 4: Pauly freaking out. Yeah. And being like, these aren't, these aren't.
- 55:44Speaker 6: Good memories for me.
- 55:45Speaker 4: Like I was a horrible person and like him kind
- 55:47Speaker 4: of almost having a little character there and reconciling, like
- 55:50Speaker 4: I treated my sister really badly for years. It's like
- 55:53Speaker 4: kind of the best moment, like the best acting moment
- 55:56Speaker 4: in the movie. But yeah, I think it does take
- 56:00Speaker 4: that turn of like, you know, him just sort of
- 56:02Speaker 4: dragging around and, you know, he misses Adrian, but like,
- 56:06Speaker 4: there's just nothing else going on where here, like it
- 56:08Speaker 4: is just sort of like, I'm done. I don't have
- 56:11Speaker 4: anything else. Yeah. Polly's gone now. Everybody's gone. So it's
- 56:15Speaker 4: like him just sort of going through the motions, that
- 56:18Speaker 4: whole opening of him, like get up and, you know,
- 56:20Speaker 4: go do what he does. Go, go do some pull-ups
- 56:23Speaker 4: and go walk to the restaurant. And like, he just
- 56:26Speaker 4: kind of goes through a pretty empty day, but it's
- 56:29Speaker 4: his routine. And that, again, I think that's just so
- 56:33Speaker 4: like real that like, there's so many people that, that,
- 56:36Speaker 4: get to that point and you don't even have to
- 56:38Speaker 4: be old like you just get to a point of
- 56:40Speaker 4: like going through the motions and like why I don't
- 56:43Speaker 4: have anybody that I care about or even cares about
- 56:46Speaker 4: me really so why am I still doing this so
- 56:49Speaker 4: it is it is a really nice little dynamic that
- 56:52Speaker 4: this kid does show up out of nowhere and is
- 56:54Speaker 4: like no you still have people that care about you
- 56:57Speaker 4: in this world and specifically you have something to offer
- 57:00Speaker 4: to the world still that like oh okay I don't
- 57:03Speaker 4: have to just wait to die.
- 57:04Speaker 6: Like everyone else I knew yeah I don't know.
- 57:07Speaker 4: I think that whole little aspect is kind of dying.
- 57:09Speaker 6: It's good. I like this movie a lot. I think,
- 57:12Speaker 6: like you said earlier about having dad kind of stuff
- 57:16Speaker 6: in it. I like the movie Warriors. Have you seen
- 57:21Speaker 6: that UFC movie?
- 57:22Speaker 4: I know of it. I still haven't. Again, it's on
- 57:25Speaker 4: the list.
- 57:25Speaker 6: It's really, really enjoyable. I was talking to a friend
- 57:29Speaker 6: of mine once about for me, as a man, the
- 57:32Speaker 6: things that get me the most emotionally invested in a
- 57:36Speaker 6: movie are dad stuff, brother stuff, and sports stuff. And
- 57:40Speaker 6: that movie had all three. This one doesn't have brother stuff,
- 57:43Speaker 6: but it has dad stuff and sports stuff. So it's like,
- 57:46Speaker 6: like that. Well, we already warned about spoilers, so I'm
- 57:49Speaker 6: sure most people have seen it, but like that, like
- 57:51Speaker 6: right before the 12th round and the final fight, when
- 57:54Speaker 6: he says like, he's like, I just want to prove
- 57:56Speaker 6: that I'm not a mistake. And then Rocky says like, uh,
- 58:00Speaker 6: you're going to do it because you're a creed and
- 58:02Speaker 6: I love you. I'm like, i'm about to cry yeah
- 58:05Speaker 6: i think so.
- 58:06Speaker 4: It's like just so emotional i think just that line
- 58:09Speaker 4: like again there's just some hard writing here of just
- 58:12Speaker 4: like that i'm not a mistake line was like delivered
- 58:15Speaker 4: so like just an open wound of like everything up
- 58:19Speaker 4: to that point in his life that i'm just like
- 58:21Speaker 4: that's that's some you know pretty damned honest writing i.
- 58:25Speaker 6: Think there's good writing and i think um i think
- 58:27Speaker 6: it's like thematic of the way like a lot of
- 58:30Speaker 6: the Rockies when they're at their best are shot and written.
- 58:32Speaker 6: And I think Coogler does a good job, which is
- 58:34Speaker 6: like kind of like, yeah, like not over dramatizing the
- 58:39Speaker 6: shots and the language of really important scenes. Like I said,
- 58:43Speaker 6: just saying like, I want to prove that I'm not
- 58:45Speaker 6: a mistake. Like you could have said that so many
- 58:47Speaker 6: other ways, but you said that was such a, just
- 58:49Speaker 6: a poignant way. You're like, Holy shit. And that's why
- 58:53Speaker 6: one of my favorite lines before that is when he
- 58:56Speaker 6: first meets Rocky in the restaurant. And he's like, uh,
- 59:00Speaker 6: And he says that Apollo's the best fighter ever. And
- 59:02Speaker 6: he's like, well, you beat him. How'd you beat him?
- 59:03Speaker 6: And he's like, I didn't beat him. Time beat him.
- 59:05Speaker 6: Time's undefeated. That was one of my favorite lines.
- 59:09Speaker 4: I wrote that one down.
- 59:10Speaker 6: Yeah, I told my wife. I'm like, I think that's
- 59:11Speaker 6: one of my favorite lines in movie history. She's like,
- 59:13Speaker 6: why'd you like it so much? I'm like, because it's
- 59:15Speaker 6: like he could have had this long soliloquy about time.
- 59:19Speaker 6: But just to say that plainly, it's like a wide shot.
- 59:22Speaker 6: So it's not even like close up to pay attention
- 59:24Speaker 6: to this. It's almost like a throwaway line. You could
- 59:27Speaker 6: tell even in his body. It's not like some truth
- 59:30Speaker 6: he lives by. He's just like, oh, time's undefeated. And
- 59:32Speaker 6: it's just like, goddamn.
- 59:34Speaker 4: That's the part I love so much about this. It's
- 59:37Speaker 4: hard and jaded, but it's not being showy about it.
- 59:41Speaker 4: It's just like... He's just throwing stuff. And again, that's
- 59:43Speaker 4: like this like weathered wisdom that he's just like time
- 59:47Speaker 4: defeats everybody.
- 59:48Speaker 6: Like you can think.
- 59:48Speaker 4: Whatever you want. You may be Adonis now, but like
- 59:52Speaker 4: given enough time, you're going to fall too. And to
- 59:55Speaker 4: hear from.
- 59:56Speaker 6: Someone like that, I think adds the gravitas of like,
- 59:59Speaker 6: I beat up a seven-foot-tall Russian on steroids in Russia
- 1:00:04Speaker 6: during the Cold War, and I will still lose to time.
- 1:00:07Speaker 6: And brought world peace. Yeah, I ended the Cold War,
- 1:00:10Speaker 6: and I will still lose to time. Like, no matter
- 1:00:13Speaker 6: what you do in this life, that will beat you eventually.
- 1:00:16Speaker 6: You can't out-train it. You can't outlast it. You know,
- 1:00:18Speaker 6: and especially for someone that that's been his mantra of like,
- 1:00:21Speaker 6: I'll keep getting up. It's him saying like, well, eventually
- 1:00:23Speaker 6: I won't get up.
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: Sometimes it's coming to terms with that.
- 1:00:27Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:00:28Speaker 6: So I was like, God damn.
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: The other thing I thought was, again, like just really
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: well crafted and not like staying sort of true to
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: the series, but not ever being cheesy and hitting you
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: over the head with it. There's several lines from the
- 1:00:44Speaker 4: other movies, but they're just thrown in there. Like, I mean,
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: the big one for me, I'm like, it's that, it's
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: not even the big main fight at the end. It's
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: that first fight with the, the, the guy's son. Yeah.
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: And like the bell rings and like, I'm like, did
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: Rocky just say there is no tomorrow? It's like, right.
- 1:01:00Speaker 4: Like it's in the background. He just ding and he
- 1:01:02Speaker 4: goes walking out. He's like, there is no tomorrow. And like,
- 1:01:05Speaker 4: but he doesn't even say it like really bold. It's
- 1:01:07Speaker 4: just like, Hey, go out there and do that because
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: there is no tomorrow. This is your shot kid. Go
- 1:01:11Speaker 4: do it. And I'm like, that was so understated. Like
- 1:01:15Speaker 4: that is to me, like almost masterfully done to be
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: able to take a line that's so iconic from the past,
- 1:01:21Speaker 4: but not hit you over the head with it in
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: this version of, I'm like, that's pretty well done. And
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: then the fact that, again, you buy into that they're
- 1:01:29Speaker 4: all living this bigger version of this life when Rocky's
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: giving lines that Mickey gave to him. But again, not going, well,
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: Mickey said to me, like explaining it to the audience.
- 1:01:40Speaker 4: He's just saying something because it's in his head because
- 1:01:44Speaker 4: it was taught to him the same way.
- 1:01:46Speaker 6: Having a natural character progression, that's what we would do.
- 1:01:49Speaker 6: We don't walk around saying like, Well, my dad once
- 1:01:51Speaker 6: told me, I have this football coach that says, you
- 1:01:53Speaker 6: just internalize them and then say them.
- 1:01:55Speaker 4: They become your ways of dealing with life, and so
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: you're trying to pass them on to somebody, but you
- 1:02:00Speaker 4: don't make a speech out of it unless it's a
- 1:02:02Speaker 4: badly written movie.
- 1:02:04Speaker 6: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:02:05Speaker 4: Which sometimes they end up that way. But, yeah, the
- 1:02:08Speaker 4: only one in Balboa, like, And again, it's almost the
- 1:02:12Speaker 4: super showy one.
- 1:02:13Speaker 6: It's the one I feel like.
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: He wrote the movie around. The, like, how many times
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: you can get hit speech is good. Like, it's the
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: one time I was like, all right, this movie needs
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: to exist for this. But it's the showy... really like
- 1:02:27Speaker 4: it's the only time he kind of emotes in the
- 1:02:28Speaker 4: entire movie really he's pretty again he's kind of sleepwalking
- 1:02:32Speaker 4: through so much of the rest of it that i'm
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: like that's the one time i'm like no there's something
- 1:02:36Speaker 4: there but it's also like yeah it's a showy version
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: that we don't really get in.
- 1:02:40Speaker 6: This i agree i think that's a perfect line to
- 1:02:43Speaker 6: contrast the time is undefeated line because it's something it's
- 1:02:47Speaker 6: again it's again like it's not bad It's very enjoyable.
- 1:02:51Speaker 6: It works for Rocky fans. I'm sure everyone's seen that
- 1:02:55Speaker 6: on YouTube even if you haven't seen the movie. I've
- 1:02:57Speaker 6: played it on the show before. It's a good speech.
- 1:03:02Speaker 6: In the realm of top 10 locker room inspirational speeches
- 1:03:05Speaker 6: in movies, it's up there. It's kind of true.
- 1:03:08Speaker 4: It is the reason Rocky got to where he is.
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: The first movie, does he win?
- 1:03:13Speaker 6: Spoilers.
- 1:03:14Speaker 4: How many times did he lose the title? How many
- 1:03:16Speaker 4: times did he... You know, he's got brain damage. He's got, like,
- 1:03:22Speaker 4: you know, he's lost his wife. He's lost Paul. Like,
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: it really, like, in a much bigger scale than in
- 1:03:27Speaker 4: the boxing ring, it is one of those, like, if
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: you're going to make it long enough for time to
- 1:03:32Speaker 4: take you out, it's only because you keep pushing yourself.
- 1:03:34Speaker 6: For sure.
- 1:03:35Speaker 4: And, like, it does work. It's a good speech.
- 1:03:37Speaker 6: But I agree that when you contrast it between a
- 1:03:41Speaker 6: simpler line and kind of having a similar emotional impact,
- 1:03:45Speaker 6: it's like... very deft just storytelling and acting and writing
- 1:03:49Speaker 6: all coming together like, all right, all so good. All
- 1:03:52Speaker 6: so good in a different way to do something like that.
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: Anyway, I got to lock up.
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: So when Mickey died, he came and talked to you, right?
- 1:03:59Speaker 4: Talked you out of quitting.
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: Took you to L.A. Trained you. Brought you back. How
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: do you know all this? How do you think? What
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: are you, like a cousin? He's my father.
- 1:04:25Speaker 6: No, he ain't.
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: I don't believe you. Call Marianne. Marianne, his wife. The
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: house number still works? That's right. You haven't talked to
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: her since the funeral.
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: She said you gave a nice speech, though.
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: Yeah. Nice speech. I want you to train me.
- 1:04:59Speaker 14: All right?
- 1:04:59Speaker 4: I need somebody solid.
- 1:05:00Speaker 6: And who else better to go to?
- 1:05:02Speaker 4: You at least owe me that.
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: I can tell the way you're talking. You've been to school.
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying?
- 1:05:10Speaker 3: I figure you got some brains. Why would you want
- 1:05:14Speaker 3: to pick a fighter's life when you don't have to?
- 1:05:17Speaker 3: If Apollo was around, he would tell you that too.
- 1:05:19Speaker 4: Well, he ain't around. I've been fighting my whole life.
- 1:05:22Speaker 4: I ain't got a choice.
- 1:05:24Speaker 3: It's always about a choice. I was in the ring.
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: I saw how it went down. That fight should have
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: been stopped. I should have stopped it.
- 1:05:33Speaker 4: Maybe he wanted to go out like a fighter.
- 1:05:35Speaker 6: Maybe you did exactly what he wanted.
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: I think he'd rather be here talking with you.
- 1:05:43Speaker 4: The other thing that I think comes into play, and
- 1:05:46Speaker 4: we certainly mentioned it, but not it also hits a
- 1:05:50Speaker 4: weird real world level of the fathers and sons thing.
- 1:05:53Speaker 4: Cause this was also like, he's pitching this movie to
- 1:05:57Speaker 4: Stallone right at the same time that Sage Stallone dies.
- 1:06:02Speaker 4: So like he almost like Stallone, I think he's even
- 1:06:06Speaker 4: said he kind of had like a weird breakdown at
- 1:06:08Speaker 4: that point, more or less some version. And like to
- 1:06:11Speaker 4: the point that he probably wasn't going to do this.
- 1:06:13Speaker 4: And Ryan was just like, this is like, this is
- 1:06:16Speaker 4: a good way to channel that into something to like,
- 1:06:19Speaker 4: take all that that you're going through and find a
- 1:06:23Speaker 4: useful way to, you know, not only use it, but
- 1:06:26Speaker 4: maybe get rid of some of it. And like, so I,
- 1:06:28Speaker 4: he like convinced him that like, you can kind of
- 1:06:31Speaker 4: use this art as a way to deal with your
- 1:06:33Speaker 4: own personal issues. And like, there is a lot, there
- 1:06:36Speaker 4: are a few money, you know, that when he picks
- 1:06:37Speaker 4: up that picture of him and that really is him
- 1:06:40Speaker 4: and Sage back in the day. And I'm like, that's,
- 1:06:43Speaker 4: That's a nice... I mean, it is a sweet moment,
- 1:06:46Speaker 4: but at the same time, it's like, again, that's painful. Like,
- 1:06:49Speaker 4: that's an open wound, man.
- 1:06:50Speaker 6: For sure. Like, yeah, that probably would happen when they
- 1:06:53Speaker 6: were filming, probably within a year.
- 1:06:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:06:55Speaker 4: I mean, it was a pretty quick turnaround to him, like,
- 1:06:58Speaker 4: losing his own son to having to deal with this
- 1:07:02Speaker 4: movie about a son that's lost his father and, like,
- 1:07:06Speaker 4: him losing all his friends and his wife.
- 1:07:08Speaker 6: And, like, so it's... It has moved away. So he
- 1:07:15Speaker 6: still lost even his kayfabe son in a certain way.
- 1:07:21Speaker 6: And his son who died played that son in Rocky V.
- 1:07:25Speaker 6: So it's still, again, there's a lot of real tissue.
- 1:07:27Speaker 4: Real world stuff.
- 1:07:28Speaker 6: Connected to that. to that fictional story.
- 1:07:31Speaker 4: Although, that aside, in Rocky Balboa, I sat there the
- 1:07:35Speaker 4: whole time because I understand there is a, you know,
- 1:07:38Speaker 4: you would take a lot of extra heat being somebody
- 1:07:41Speaker 4: famous in general, but even more so being a guy,
- 1:07:44Speaker 4: being the son of someone who's known for getting in fights.
- 1:07:48Speaker 4: It's like, people are going to kick your ass your
- 1:07:49Speaker 4: whole life or attempt to. So like, I do see
- 1:07:52Speaker 4: why the son would have issues, but I kept going,
- 1:07:55Speaker 4: why do you live in that city? Everybody knows who
- 1:07:59Speaker 4: you and your dad are in that city. Just move away. Like,
- 1:08:02Speaker 4: even if dad doesn't want to like relocate. So it
- 1:08:05Speaker 4: made sense. Yeah.
- 1:08:07Speaker 6: It's insinuated. He moves to Vancouver, which is like, yeah,
- 1:08:10Speaker 6: that's probably what you should do.
- 1:08:11Speaker 4: Is he saying a town called Vancouver?
- 1:08:13Speaker 6: Yeah, he said somewhere.
- 1:08:14Speaker 4: I think he said somewhere called Vancouver.
- 1:08:16Speaker 6: Somewhere called Vancouver. Like he's never heard of Vancouver, which
- 1:08:20Speaker 6: is adorable. Like it's a fictional land.
- 1:08:22Speaker 4: I'm like, oh, Rocky. That was so Rocky.
- 1:08:26Speaker 6: Plus, like when you know his son from Balboa, you're like,
- 1:08:29Speaker 6: he does seem like a Vancouver kind of guy.
- 1:08:31Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: He'll do good there. Again, that wasn't the worst. That
- 1:08:35Speaker 4: was kind of the best thing was he also like
- 1:08:37Speaker 4: looking at him, I'm like, all right, I could also
- 1:08:39Speaker 4: see him being his son. You know, Sage definitely looked
- 1:08:41Speaker 4: like him. He's a little prettier, but I'm like, I
- 1:08:44Speaker 4: can definitely see that. It wasn't terrible casting, but he
- 1:08:48Speaker 4: didn't have much to do in Balboa. So it's probably,
- 1:08:51Speaker 4: they do take a lot of like interesting, of the
- 1:08:54Speaker 4: handful of interesting things that were going on and just
- 1:08:56Speaker 4: kind of throw them out. They're like, well, the sun
- 1:08:57Speaker 4: will kind of clog this up. So how about, we
- 1:09:00Speaker 4: get rid of him? He moves to somewhere called Vancouver.
- 1:09:03Speaker 4: And then, like, the potential love interest. Like, I kind
- 1:09:07Speaker 4: of liked... I guess it, again, I think it's a
- 1:09:10Speaker 4: sort of a cheap move, but it's one I totally
- 1:09:12Speaker 4: bought into, bringing the same girl back from the first movie. Like,
- 1:09:16Speaker 4: our character of, was she Marie?
- 1:09:18Speaker 6: Little Marie.
- 1:09:19Speaker 4: Little Marie, he kept calling her.
- 1:09:21Speaker 6: From the hoagie shop.
- 1:09:22Speaker 4: And I was like, that's kind of fun, like, just
- 1:09:24Speaker 4: for fans of the series.
- 1:09:26Speaker 6: Yeah, for sure.
- 1:09:27Speaker 4: I liked that move, and I do, it was one
- 1:09:28Speaker 4: of those, like, if we're doing anything different, I do, like,
- 1:09:32Speaker 4: he's definitely, like, suffering here on his own, like, Probably
- 1:09:37Speaker 4: need to find somebody like, again, no offense to Adrian,
- 1:09:40Speaker 4: but I feel like she'd also want you to be
- 1:09:42Speaker 4: happy at this point and you're making yourself miserable. So
- 1:09:45Speaker 4: I kind of like that. Like maybe he's growing a
- 1:09:47Speaker 4: little bit. Maybe he's not just going to be miserable
- 1:09:49Speaker 4: and die alone. Like maybe he can learn to readjust
- 1:09:52Speaker 4: his life and. find someone else who loves him and
- 1:09:55Speaker 4: so we kind of end it that way like it's
- 1:09:57Speaker 4: still sort of they never that we get like a
- 1:09:59Speaker 4: minor kiss is the most we ever get yeah i
- 1:10:03Speaker 4: do really like it is one of the most sweet
- 1:10:06Speaker 4: lines is like you know my wife's dead but she's
- 1:10:08Speaker 4: not really and i was like that's again that's one
- 1:10:11Speaker 4: of the more understated for that for that performance i
- 1:10:13Speaker 4: was like that was kind of good it's like why
- 1:10:15Speaker 4: he doesn't immediately just start hitting on this girl right
- 1:10:17Speaker 4: right But yeah, I did kind of like that they
- 1:10:20Speaker 4: sort of left it open-ended. Like, okay, if this is
- 1:10:23Speaker 4: the end of the story, maybe that's what happens. So
- 1:10:25Speaker 4: obviously Coogler was like, nope. We want them old and
- 1:10:28Speaker 4: bitter and alone.
- 1:10:30Speaker 6: Yeah, which was the move.
- 1:10:31Speaker 4: It works, I understand. But I'm like, that's kind of sad. Because,
- 1:10:34Speaker 4: you know, she was a pretty decent character that we
- 1:10:37Speaker 4: added to that last movie.
- 1:10:39Speaker 5: For sure.
- 1:10:39Speaker 4: Nope, she's bogging things up. You and Steps get the.
- 1:10:42Speaker 6: Hell out of here. Yeah, your Steps.
- 1:10:44Speaker 4: Steps, again, was almost that surrogate moving into what this
- 1:10:48Speaker 4: would become. It was almost like a test run.
- 1:10:51Speaker 6: For sure. It worked as a good ending to the series,
- 1:10:55Speaker 6: but now that we have Creed, it is good that
- 1:10:59Speaker 6: they kind of took the best parts of that and
- 1:11:01Speaker 6: took them to a better conclusion.
- 1:11:03Speaker 4: A much better level. We also kind of get, again,
- 1:11:08Speaker 4: him doing his own thing. It's like he takes most
- 1:11:12Speaker 4: of the ideas or the things that we all know
- 1:11:16Speaker 4: from the running series and does a version of them,
- 1:11:19Speaker 4: but always kind of finds a way to do it differently.
- 1:11:21Speaker 4: Like he, he does the training montage. He's chasing a
- 1:11:24Speaker 4: chicken for God's sakes. You know, it's like he does,
- 1:11:27Speaker 4: you know, even the running down the street and instead
- 1:11:29Speaker 4: of kids running behind him, he's got biker boys behind him.
- 1:11:33Speaker 4: And even, you know, all of that, like stuff that
- 1:11:35Speaker 4: we know from the series is like, But definitely has
- 1:11:39Speaker 4: a very different take.
- 1:11:41Speaker 6: For sure. And that's why I like that they really
- 1:11:43Speaker 6: didn't use... They use a little bit of the old
- 1:11:45Speaker 6: music at the very end of the fight. But otherwise
- 1:11:48Speaker 6: they use a whole different score. But they use like
- 1:11:51Speaker 6: an orchestral score.
- 1:11:53Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:11:53Speaker 6: So they're trying to like give... adonis creed his own
- 1:11:57Speaker 6: signature of music and it's in the vein of rocky
- 1:12:00Speaker 6: but it's not a copy it's not even really like
- 1:12:03Speaker 6: an homage except in style.
- 1:12:05Speaker 4: I do like again i i think that's something that's
- 1:12:08Speaker 4: kind of interesting too is and him not trying to
- 1:12:11Speaker 4: totally copy the old the adding because it's such a
- 1:12:15Speaker 4: a 21st century version of this like adding in as
- 1:12:18Speaker 4: much rap music as he did i'm like this is
- 1:12:20Speaker 4: his world like this and and even tessa's music which
- 1:12:23Speaker 4: is very different i'm like I really kind of like him.
- 1:12:26Speaker 4: I'm like, what's her band? I need to, like, I
- 1:12:28Speaker 4: kind of like some of the stuff she's doing. So
- 1:12:30Speaker 4: I'm like, I like that he adds in all this
- 1:12:32Speaker 4: real world music that's going on. And I'm like, yeah,
- 1:12:34Speaker 4: it wouldn't exist in this 1970s, like version of Philadelphia
- 1:12:39Speaker 4: where none of that existed. It's like, it is definitely
- 1:12:42Speaker 4: of today and of this character who grew up in
- 1:12:45Speaker 4: that world. So of course he comes into Tupac because
- 1:12:49Speaker 4: for sure, that's what he grew up with.
- 1:12:51Speaker 6: And that's what I mean, like, I think the best
- 1:12:54Speaker 6: joke about it was when Chris Rock was hosting the
- 1:12:56Speaker 6: Golden Globes. He called Creed. He was like, give it
- 1:12:59Speaker 6: up for, I think the joke was something like, give
- 1:13:01Speaker 6: it up for Michael B. Jordan, the star of Black Rocky.
- 1:13:04Speaker 6: And he's like, I don't call it Creed. It's not Creed.
- 1:13:06Speaker 6: It's Black Rocky. And I'm like, yeah. Like the other
- 1:13:09Speaker 6: way to say it is Young Rocky. Like it really is, again,
- 1:13:12Speaker 6: that they really did do a great pivot on the
- 1:13:15Speaker 6: series where, again, like I feel that if I was
- 1:13:19Speaker 6: like an eight-year-old, I could watch this movie. And like,
- 1:13:23Speaker 6: I mean, when I watched Rocky three and Rocky one
- 1:13:25Speaker 6: and whatever, when I was growing up, I was like,
- 1:13:27Speaker 6: Mickey is an interesting character. I like him, but I
- 1:13:30Speaker 6: love Rocky cause he's the fighter, but this guy's cool.
- 1:13:33Speaker 6: And the same way, if I'd never seen Rocky, I'm
- 1:13:35Speaker 6: just some eight year old. I'd be like, Michael B.
- 1:13:37Speaker 6: Jordan is great. He's so cool.
- 1:13:39Speaker 4: He's cool.
- 1:13:40Speaker 6: Like, you know, uh, you know, uh, Jordan sweats and
- 1:13:43Speaker 6: he's like, listen to rap music, come out to Tupac.
- 1:13:45Speaker 6: Like I like this guy, but, But this Rocky guy,
- 1:13:48Speaker 6: he's got some cool lines. He would just be their Mickey.
- 1:13:51Speaker 6: He's the cool old guy that teaches them. So that's
- 1:13:53Speaker 6: why I'm like, you really did make young Rocky. You
- 1:13:56Speaker 6: made the next generation of Rocky where this guy really
- 1:13:59Speaker 6: can take the lead and be a great lead. He's
- 1:14:02Speaker 6: as charismatic as Stallone was in the 70s. And then
- 1:14:05Speaker 6: Stallone is just now a great side character, which there's
- 1:14:08Speaker 6: not really many movies with as great– I think Rocky has, like,
- 1:14:14Speaker 6: the best bullpen of characters.
- 1:14:15Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 1:14:16Speaker 6: Like, Pauly and Mickey and, like.
- 1:14:17Speaker 4: And they're dropping off each movie.
- 1:14:19Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:14:19Speaker 6: And so, like, to me, like, it's not an insult
- 1:14:22Speaker 6: for Rocky to be a side character in Creed. Because
- 1:14:24Speaker 6: it's like, that's a series with the best side characters
- 1:14:26Speaker 6: in the business. So, yeah, he'd be a great side character.
- 1:14:28Speaker 6: It's not an insult in this franchise. It's, like, it's cool.
- 1:14:31Speaker 6: It's made for character actors. Like, this isn't a movie
- 1:14:34Speaker 6: for leads. This is a movie for character actors.
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: So.
- 1:14:37Speaker 6: step on up.
- 1:14:37Speaker 4: Oh and then i and you said what i was
- 1:14:39Speaker 4: kind of thinking and like the more you talked about
- 1:14:41Speaker 4: it there i was like yeah it really also works
- 1:14:45Speaker 4: almost as a reboot because if i was a kid
- 1:14:48Speaker 4: like if i'd never like you probably know the title
- 1:14:50Speaker 4: but if you've never seen any of these other movies
- 1:14:53Speaker 4: and you just sat down and watched it like it
- 1:14:54Speaker 4: works on its own like you don't it it peppers
- 1:14:58Speaker 4: in just enough of the backstory that like you can
- 1:15:00Speaker 4: get it all from this movie you don't have to
- 1:15:03Speaker 4: go back and watch the entire series to get to
- 1:15:05Speaker 4: this point you can come in kind of like our
- 1:15:08Speaker 4: main characters coming in and be like all i know
- 1:15:11Speaker 4: is stories about apollo creed all i know is like
- 1:15:13Speaker 4: youtube clips of rocky like i don't i don't well.
- 1:15:17Speaker 6: And honestly like when i tell people about this movie
- 1:15:20Speaker 6: who are not familiar with the series that's their first
- 1:15:23Speaker 6: question it's like Do I have to watch all the
- 1:15:25Speaker 6: Rockies again? And I'm like, to be honest, if you
- 1:15:29Speaker 6: want to watch anything before you watch Creed, just watch
- 1:15:32Speaker 6: Rocky IV. You don't even have to watch Balboa. Because
- 1:15:35Speaker 6: even though it's chronologically the nearest, I'm like, most, 95%
- 1:15:39Speaker 6: of what they reference is from IV. If you want
- 1:15:42Speaker 6: to know how his dad died, how Rocky was a
- 1:15:45Speaker 6: part of that, what Rocky did to avenge that. Because
- 1:15:48Speaker 6: I think they're bringing... drago's son into this new creed
- 1:15:51Speaker 6: so like if you want to know like all you
- 1:15:53Speaker 6: really have to watch is four if you want if
- 1:15:56Speaker 6: you don't want to watch a lot from the old
- 1:15:58Speaker 6: stuff watch four watch creed and then just go on
- 1:16:01Speaker 6: that new track. You don't, the rest of it, you
- 1:16:02Speaker 6: don't really need.
- 1:16:04Speaker 4: Even four is, again, becomes more of the sillier ones
- 1:16:07Speaker 4: as they go on. So it's like, I don't even
- 1:16:10Speaker 4: think you have, I think if you just got the
- 1:16:11Speaker 4: gist of what happens in four of like, and he
- 1:16:14Speaker 4: comes in and here's the trunks and, you know, so
- 1:16:16Speaker 4: like when we get to the key moment, so you're like, oh, okay.
- 1:16:19Speaker 4: Like it at least makes sense why, but yeah, I
- 1:16:23Speaker 4: think it's so well put together that it does kind
- 1:16:26Speaker 4: of stand on its own. It really can be like, okay,
- 1:16:28Speaker 4: Balboa might've been the book in, this is a whole
- 1:16:31Speaker 4: new book like this is brought a character over but
- 1:16:34Speaker 4: like for the most part you could just start this
- 1:16:36Speaker 4: as its own new franchise and like again i'm afraid
- 1:16:40Speaker 4: of like it also sounds like adding drago's kid could
- 1:16:43Speaker 4: be really silly but i i want to have faith
- 1:16:46Speaker 4: i want it to be fun so.
- 1:16:48Speaker 6: Like it's like one of those things where it's like
- 1:16:50Speaker 6: it's like everything else where you're like Like, when they
- 1:16:53Speaker 6: pitch it, I'm like, oh, not.
- 1:16:54Speaker 4: Drago's kid versus Paolo's kid.
- 1:16:57Speaker 6: You're, like, kind of rolling your eyes, but you're like, well,
- 1:17:00Speaker 6: they can't not do it.
- 1:17:02Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 1:17:02Speaker 6: Like, if they release a sequel and Drago doesn't make
- 1:17:05Speaker 6: a cameo or his kid isn't involved, you're like, well,
- 1:17:08Speaker 6: it's out there, right?
- 1:17:09Speaker 4: You can't.
- 1:17:11Speaker 6: You know what I mean? I think I made, like,
- 1:17:12Speaker 6: I remember I did this once on stage. This is, like,
- 1:17:15Speaker 6: kind of adjacent where someone, I think someone, like, said something,
- 1:17:19Speaker 6: you know, just like an offhand comment. Something happened. And
- 1:17:22Speaker 6: I made like a joke, like a very obvious joke.
- 1:17:25Speaker 6: It wasn't from my act. It was like a riff.
- 1:17:27Speaker 6: And I kind of even just said, I'll very much
- 1:17:29Speaker 6: break like the fourth wall or the fifth wall. I
- 1:17:31Speaker 6: guess I'm already breaking the fourth wall in my act
- 1:17:33Speaker 6: when I'm on stage live. And I'm just like, look,
- 1:17:36Speaker 6: I know that wasn't an easy joke, but like you're
- 1:17:39Speaker 6: expecting me to be like a comic. So if I
- 1:17:41Speaker 6: don't take it. You might think I didn't see it
- 1:17:44Speaker 6: and you'll lose respect for me because I didn't see it.
- 1:17:47Speaker 6: But I'm like, so me saying it is more is
- 1:17:49Speaker 6: not that I think it's the best joke. I just
- 1:17:51Speaker 6: want you to respect me. No, I saw it. So
- 1:17:53Speaker 6: I think sometimes like the same thing where it's like, look,
- 1:17:56Speaker 6: we know we got to put Drago in somewhere. We're
- 1:17:59Speaker 6: going to try to do it good. But you wouldn't
- 1:18:00Speaker 6: respect us if we're like, oh, Drago, why did we
- 1:18:02Speaker 6: do that?
- 1:18:04Speaker 4: I think I do that just in my normal day,
- 1:18:06Speaker 4: much to other people's dismay. Because there's many times when
- 1:18:11Speaker 4: they will just, it's not my fault. You set me up.
- 1:18:13Speaker 4: They'll say something and I'm like, okay, my response now,
- 1:18:18Speaker 4: based on my smart ass personality, is to then just
- 1:18:21Speaker 4: backhand you with whatever you just said as a shot
- 1:18:24Speaker 4: at you.
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: For sure.
- 1:18:25Speaker 4: And I'm like, I don't even mean it. I definitely
- 1:18:27Speaker 4: don't even mean it towards you. I'm probably friends with you.
- 1:18:30Speaker 4: But you set up the joke.
- 1:18:31Speaker 6: Like, I have to finish the joke.
- 1:18:32Speaker 4: That's my personality.
- 1:18:34Speaker 6: You gotta take it.
- 1:18:35Speaker 4: Yeah, so I get that, and I guess, and I
- 1:18:38Speaker 4: hadn't really thought about that either. I guess in this universe,
- 1:18:41Speaker 4: Drago's still around. Like, he didn't die in this movie,
- 1:18:44Speaker 4: so he could very well still be around.
- 1:18:47Speaker 6: I don't know who the, I don't know. I think
- 1:18:49Speaker 6: Stallone might write this or I'm sure he'll at least advise.
- 1:18:52Speaker 6: I don't remember if they have like a full writer.
- 1:18:53Speaker 6: I know they have a director. I don't remember his name,
- 1:18:56Speaker 6: but the only thing I've ever heard is that I
- 1:18:59Speaker 6: think it was from like a talk show interview or something.
- 1:19:02Speaker 6: They asked Stallone, this was years ago. So it's not
- 1:19:05Speaker 6: even related to Creed, like what he thought happened to Drago.
- 1:19:08Speaker 6: And he said that, He thinks that he went back. Well,
- 1:19:11Speaker 6: not went back, but he's still in Russia. But he
- 1:19:13Speaker 6: basically returned home and was kind of a disgrace because
- 1:19:16Speaker 6: he lost to the American. He became this alcoholic and
- 1:19:18Speaker 6: kind of dropped out of like boxing and stuff. So
- 1:19:21Speaker 6: I'm like. That could be like an interesting, you know,
- 1:19:24Speaker 6: like again, like a grizzled kind of chubby Drago, you know, like.
- 1:19:29Speaker 4: As you're describing, I'm like, so it's Cobra Kai only
- 1:19:32Speaker 4: in Russia.
- 1:19:33Speaker 6: I was like, this is almost exactly that. Have you
- 1:19:35Speaker 6: seen Cobra Kai?
- 1:19:36Speaker 4: I just saw the trailer and I went, man, that's.
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: I watched.
- 1:19:39Speaker 4: Again, it's almost like.
- 1:19:40Speaker 6: Without a plan to do it.
- 1:19:42Speaker 7: Oh God.
- 1:19:42Speaker 6: I watched all 10 episodes in one day and it
- 1:19:45Speaker 6: is amazing. They did a great job.
- 1:19:48Speaker 4: But again, it's almost that same idea. It's just like, well,
- 1:19:52Speaker 4: we can revisit these characters. And I think that's finally
- 1:19:55Speaker 4: becoming like not such a– because it was such a
- 1:20:00Speaker 4: cheap move for one and it became such a like
- 1:20:02Speaker 4: a lazy version of it. There was bad writing. It
- 1:20:05Speaker 4: was always the easiest move to go back. And like
- 1:20:07Speaker 4: now I think because so many talented people are doing
- 1:20:10Speaker 4: something– They're like, I don't, I don't think it's a
- 1:20:13Speaker 4: terrible idea anymore. Like I see people wanting to return
- 1:20:16Speaker 4: and do a sequel to a movie from 25 or hell,
- 1:20:19Speaker 4: the new Blade Runner. It's like, and like people will
- 1:20:22Speaker 4: come in and go, that's a terrible idea. And then
- 1:20:23Speaker 4: they'll watch and go, oh, oh, there is something we
- 1:20:26Speaker 4: can do with this concept. So like, I, I, I
- 1:20:29Speaker 4: think I've gotten to that point of like, it's okay.
- 1:20:32Speaker 4: Like if you've got a good story to tell, like
- 1:20:34Speaker 4: you can, Kind of do it in a universe we
- 1:20:36Speaker 4: already know and maybe use some of the same characters?
- 1:20:54Speaker 6: And disgraced his father when all his father was doing
- 1:20:57Speaker 6: was just trying to fight.
- 1:20:58Speaker 4: Representing his country.
- 1:21:00Speaker 6: Yeah, he's like, I fight for me to win for me,
- 1:21:03Speaker 6: the famous Drago speech in the fight of the last
- 1:21:07Speaker 6: fight of Rocky IV. So he was just trying to fight.
- 1:21:11Speaker 6: He could be mad at Russia and mad at Rocky.
- 1:21:13Speaker 6: He could just have all this rage and he just
- 1:21:15Speaker 6: wants to take it out. on this, on this creed.
- 1:21:18Speaker 4: My family's falling apart. My country fell apart from what
- 1:21:21Speaker 4: it was at that point. So it's like, everything's kind
- 1:21:24Speaker 4: of like messed up now.
- 1:21:25Speaker 6: So, and now you got, now you got this whole
- 1:21:29Speaker 6: Russia meddling thing, just adding, uh, the political gravitas to
- 1:21:33Speaker 6: the movie to get it green lit.
- 1:21:35Speaker 4: Probably like, Oh, that's buzzwords. We like those.
- 1:21:38Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 1:21:38Speaker 4: Throw money at this. Yeah.
- 1:21:39Speaker 6: So I don't know if it'll reach the gravitas of
- 1:21:42Speaker 6: doing a Russian enemy in the eighties, but yeah, It's
- 1:21:46Speaker 6: not bad.
- 1:21:47Speaker 4: It's definitely got a new spin to it that we
- 1:21:49Speaker 4: didn't expect.
- 1:21:51Speaker 6: But he won't have the cool, they're not the Soviet
- 1:21:54Speaker 6: Union anymore. That was the coolest part of the outfit,
- 1:21:56Speaker 6: those red trunks with the little hammer and sickle on it.
- 1:21:59Speaker 6: Now they'll just be like, what, red, white, and blue trunks?
- 1:22:03Speaker 4: Guess whatever the russian i mean i think they'd almost
- 1:22:05Speaker 4: still have to do some sort of nod to the
- 1:22:07Speaker 4: old look right.
- 1:22:08Speaker 6: I wonder if they can get a putin cameo probably you.
- 1:22:12Speaker 4: Know he seems like he'll do just about he likes
- 1:22:14Speaker 4: being on as long as he can be shirtless that's
- 1:22:17Speaker 4: what we're looking for yeah.
- 1:22:18Speaker 6: Just like just like they could even they wouldn't even
- 1:22:20Speaker 6: to film it on set they could edit it in
- 1:22:22Speaker 6: just like a shot of him in just some sort
- 1:22:24Speaker 6: of booth just giving a wave to a crowd like i.
- 1:22:26Speaker 4: Kind of want him in the locker room with just
- 1:22:28Speaker 4: a towel yeah kind of hanging out like I also
- 1:22:31Speaker 4: take lessons here, too.
- 1:22:33Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:22:33Speaker 4: Some sort of horrible cameo.
- 1:22:35Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:22:36Speaker 4: Yeah, that's what we need.
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: Could work.
- 1:22:39Speaker 4: Could work. Could be terrible. So, yeah, don't listen to
- 1:22:44Speaker 4: us on that one. But the rest of this, yeah,
- 1:22:45Speaker 4: put together something good. yeah i think that's with this
- 1:22:49Speaker 4: one then again it was kind of on all fronts
- 1:22:52Speaker 4: i'm also looking at like the the boxing stuff because
- 1:22:55Speaker 4: that's always i think we talked about this last time
- 1:22:57Speaker 4: that's always something that's so hard to do for sure
- 1:22:59Speaker 4: because now it's its own subgenre of not just a
- 1:23:02Speaker 4: sports movie but a boxing movie is like its own
- 1:23:05Speaker 4: art form now so for somebody who hadn't really done
- 1:23:08Speaker 4: anything like that he came from fruitville station like he
- 1:23:12Speaker 4: came from not necessarily doing sports or, you know, specifically
- 1:23:16Speaker 4: like watching it last night, especially the, the big 12
- 1:23:20Speaker 4: rounds there. It's like, it's really like slick editing. It's got,
- 1:23:24Speaker 4: it does have that nice little pop-ups of the stats
- 1:23:27Speaker 4: for like, I wasn't sure how far they were going
- 1:23:29Speaker 4: to go with that. That's almost kind of breaking the wall.
- 1:23:31Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:23:32Speaker 6: Doing like the TV style presentation. So it's like, almost
- 1:23:34Speaker 6: like you're watching a real fight for sure.
- 1:23:36Speaker 4: So I wondered if they were, so it only, it
- 1:23:38Speaker 4: only comes up a few times, but yeah, getting into that,
- 1:23:40Speaker 4: that 12th round, like, That stuff, and again, I hate
- 1:23:44Speaker 4: to continually compare it, but the almost over-the-top cheesiness of
- 1:23:50Speaker 4: the Balboa fight, of the black and white mixed with color,
- 1:23:53Speaker 4: and the blood and red and everything else in black
- 1:23:57Speaker 4: and white, I was like, it's a little heavy-handed. You
- 1:24:00Speaker 4: can use that stuff and make it work sometimes, but
- 1:24:02Speaker 4: it just felt so forced. Where I was like, this
- 1:24:06Speaker 4: is just kind of well-edited action, and you.
- 1:24:10Speaker 4: Again, it's almost... fictional because nobody takes that many shots
- 1:24:15Speaker 4: in any fight i've ever seen like watching them last
- 1:24:18Speaker 4: night i was just like oh my god like they're
- 1:24:20Speaker 4: just there's not even any defense in that fight they
- 1:24:22Speaker 4: are just constantly trading punches especially you.
- 1:24:26Speaker 6: Can definitely get i mean boxing has just changed so
- 1:24:29Speaker 6: much over the years so i feel like the first
- 1:24:32Speaker 6: two rocky movies you could get away with it because
- 1:24:33Speaker 6: you're like There were some brutal fights in the 70s
- 1:24:36Speaker 6: and 80s, but now they've gone from 15 to 12 rounds.
- 1:24:39Speaker 6: They're really, I mean, as cautious as you can be
- 1:24:43Speaker 6: about concussions in a sport where you're hitting each other
- 1:24:45Speaker 6: in the head. But, like, yeah, like that scene where
- 1:24:48Speaker 6: he gets knocked down and then, like, is kind of
- 1:24:51Speaker 6: out and then comes back to it. I'm like, they
- 1:24:53Speaker 6: would have called the fight as soon as he hit
- 1:24:55Speaker 6: the camera. It's a cool moment. It's such a cool moment,
- 1:24:57Speaker 6: but it is tough because, like, you're like, in 2015
- 1:24:59Speaker 6: or 16, whenever this came out, you're like, they would
- 1:25:02Speaker 6: have just called the fight. And, like, the whole doctor
- 1:25:05Speaker 6: checking his eye and his kind of trainer. Whatever you
- 1:25:08Speaker 6: want to call on the eye. Which, again, it was, like,
- 1:25:10Speaker 6: a cool moment. But you're like, in 1976, sure, a
- 1:25:15Speaker 6: doctor would have been like, yeah, he's fine, come on.
- 1:25:17Speaker 4: And, again, also in, like, a little, like, dive place somewhere. But, like,
- 1:25:22Speaker 4: this is the world glass. This is the biggest fight
- 1:25:25Speaker 4: in the world right now. Like, being televised to millions,
- 1:25:29Speaker 4: they're going to get a guy who can't tell that he's, like,
- 1:25:31Speaker 4: giving him the answer when his like entire reputation depends
- 1:25:36Speaker 4: on like if he lets him go out there and
- 1:25:37Speaker 4: he gets killed Apollo style like it's on that guy
- 1:25:40Speaker 4: like yeah so you think he'd be playing that a
- 1:25:43Speaker 4: little I've been watching like.
- 1:25:44Speaker 6: The NBA finals and you know like anytime someone gets
- 1:25:47Speaker 6: like swatted even in the head they like check the
- 1:25:50Speaker 6: replay is it a flagrant foul if you're bleeding you
- 1:25:53Speaker 6: need to get stitched up like it's very like every
- 1:25:56Speaker 6: sport is very cautious about that because like they don't
- 1:25:59Speaker 6: want it to come back 20 years later and have
- 1:26:01Speaker 6: to get be responsible for all these things. But, like
- 1:26:03Speaker 6: he said, you know, I don't count that as a negative,
- 1:26:06Speaker 6: but it is funnier to watch it now and being like, yeah,
- 1:26:10Speaker 6: they wouldn't let this fight keep going. But, I mean,
- 1:26:13Speaker 6: it is still super well done as a fight. And, like...
- 1:26:16Speaker 6: And it is brutal. That doesn't take you out of it,
- 1:26:19Speaker 6: but it is a funny takeaway that you're like, okay.
- 1:26:21Speaker 4: And that, again, and his, like, competitor there is a monster. Like,
- 1:26:28Speaker 4: you're like, okay, I can see. Like, no matter, even as...
- 1:26:31Speaker 4: like driven and like hardcore as Adonis is like I'm like, no, no,
- 1:26:36Speaker 4: this guy's something to worry about. And, like, he's not even, like,
- 1:26:40Speaker 4: super cut. Like, as, like, ripped as Adonis gets, like,
- 1:26:44Speaker 4: as his training, like, he is cut in this thing.
- 1:26:47Speaker 4: You go to that other guy, he's just hefty. Like,
- 1:26:49Speaker 4: he is just a brute. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And, like,
- 1:26:52Speaker 4: so you kind of buy that. I'm like, no, if
- 1:26:53Speaker 4: somebody's going to hold his own, either one of these guys. Like,
- 1:26:56Speaker 4: they're different versions of a fighter, but, like.
- 1:26:59Speaker 6: It's a good matchup.
- 1:27:00Speaker 4: It's a hell of a fight. So, like, even being fictional,
- 1:27:03Speaker 4: it's like. There are some brutal shots there that I'm
- 1:27:05Speaker 4: just like, damn, like they are just pounding each other
- 1:27:09Speaker 4: in the face for like minutes on end. Yeah. And
- 1:27:12Speaker 4: then again, like it's sort of ridiculous as that eye
- 1:27:16Speaker 4: is to finish the fight. Damn, that makeup was good.
- 1:27:19Speaker 4: Like I'm looking at it going, that does not look
- 1:27:21Speaker 4: like bad latex. Like that looks like he got his
- 1:27:25Speaker 4: face beat in. So like, yeah, everything about that whole
- 1:27:29Speaker 4: like big finale there is pretty, pretty tightly put together and, Yeah,
- 1:27:34Speaker 4: I was kind of happy to see that. Again, so
- 1:27:38Speaker 4: much of it hinges on that. Everything about those old
- 1:27:42Speaker 4: movies was that you got almost personality out of them.
- 1:27:45Speaker 4: When you get the Apollo versus Rocky, you start to
- 1:27:49Speaker 4: see Rocky messing with him. He's like, go on, hit
- 1:27:52Speaker 4: me again, hit me again. Or him touching his head
- 1:27:56Speaker 4: when he's just fucking with him. Yeah, yeah, yeah. that's
- 1:27:59Speaker 4: such a personality thing that comes through that you don't
- 1:28:02Speaker 4: normally get in a regular you were watching hbo like
- 1:28:04Speaker 4: you don't always get that right but like it being
- 1:28:07Speaker 4: a movie like that comes through and almost makes it
- 1:28:10Speaker 4: more endearing and we start to get a little of
- 1:28:13Speaker 4: that hit like with these we we get like especially
- 1:28:16Speaker 4: with with you know our our side like you do
- 1:28:18Speaker 4: see but with him it's not so much personality as
- 1:28:20Speaker 4: that drive like you do I feel like it really
- 1:28:24Speaker 4: is like his entire life is just leading to this
- 1:28:27Speaker 4: moment of proving himself.
- 1:28:28Speaker 6: Well, that's the thing about a great fight movie is
- 1:28:31Speaker 6: like as realistic as you can make it, as well
- 1:28:34Speaker 6: as you can shoot it, as many like twists and
- 1:28:38Speaker 6: turns in the fight itself. the physical fight you can
- 1:28:41Speaker 6: put in like that can be good but we've seen
- 1:28:43Speaker 6: a lot of them like it really has to be
- 1:28:46Speaker 6: a fight that tells a completely different story unrelated to
- 1:28:49Speaker 6: the combat sport element of it and so like you
- 1:28:52Speaker 6: said yeah it's a great fight in terms of like
- 1:28:55Speaker 6: the you know the the the theater combat and the
- 1:28:59Speaker 6: editing and the music and it's all great but it's
- 1:29:03Speaker 6: it's for naught if you don't realize this is in
- 1:29:05Speaker 6: the fight this is 12 rounds for this man to
- 1:29:08Speaker 6: prove that he is worthy of being alive and also
- 1:29:13Speaker 6: then kind of and then that's one a and then
- 1:29:15Speaker 6: one b having this name as a person that's alive
- 1:29:18Speaker 6: and then so that's what makes it so emotionally charged
- 1:29:21Speaker 6: otherwise you know It's never going to be as exciting
- 1:29:24Speaker 6: as a real boxing match where the outcome is unknown.
- 1:29:28Speaker 6: That's what makes it interesting. And, you know, I think
- 1:29:31Speaker 6: the Rocky films most of the time get that element right.
- 1:29:34Speaker 6: And I think this one is obviously a perfect example
- 1:29:36Speaker 6: of that.
- 1:29:36Speaker 4: Although with these, it is that same thing of... But
- 1:29:40Speaker 4: it's kind of a coin flip. It's like, well, what
- 1:29:41Speaker 4: are they going to do? Are they going to do Rocky?
- 1:29:43Speaker 4: Or are they going to do Rocky 2? Like, it's
- 1:29:46Speaker 4: become that, because they pulled such, at the time, an
- 1:29:49Speaker 4: unusual move, making this whole thing about this character and
- 1:29:53Speaker 4: then having him lose. But he proves himself, you know,
- 1:29:56Speaker 4: to himself, to the world, to, you know, Adrian, that like,
- 1:30:00Speaker 4: He kind of comes out ahead as a person, as
- 1:30:03Speaker 4: a character, but he loses the title. So, I mean,
- 1:30:06Speaker 4: that was such a different move than you probably expected
- 1:30:09Speaker 4: in the 70s. But to come back to it now,
- 1:30:12Speaker 4: almost with any boxing movie, especially even within the French,
- 1:30:15Speaker 4: because again, I'm watching Rocky Balboa and I'm like, okay,
- 1:30:17Speaker 4: which way are they going to go with it? Is
- 1:30:19Speaker 4: he going to technically win the title, but it's an
- 1:30:21Speaker 4: exhibition match as an old man? That seems unlikely to
- 1:30:25Speaker 4: happen at all, but I'm like, they can do it.
- 1:30:27Speaker 4: It's their movie. And they shot it that way too, actually.
- 1:30:30Speaker 6: Yeah, they shot two ways.
- 1:30:32Speaker 4: Which I think they did with this too. I think
- 1:30:34Speaker 4: they shot an alternate ending and then stuck with the
- 1:30:37Speaker 4: original Rocky ending of like, no, he proves himself. He
- 1:30:40Speaker 4: earns his name and his, you know, his reputation in
- 1:30:43Speaker 4: the industry, but he doesn't win the match. So, yeah,
- 1:30:46Speaker 4: that was, again, like, I think that's a weird game
- 1:30:51Speaker 4: that you have to play with any sports movie, specifically
- 1:30:53Speaker 4: a boxing movie, and even more so pressure on you
- 1:30:56Speaker 4: when it's a Rocky movie. Like, how do you end it? Like,
- 1:30:59Speaker 4: which way do we go with this? So, to me,
- 1:31:01Speaker 4: it works really well with this one, kind of for
- 1:31:04Speaker 4: all those same reasons.
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: For sure.
- 1:31:07Speaker 4: And I will say, like, it is almost a genius
- 1:31:10Speaker 4: move of like, we're not going to play the song.
- 1:31:13Speaker 4: We're not going to play the song. And then you
- 1:31:15Speaker 4: get most of the way in and you're like, Oh
- 1:31:16Speaker 4: my God, they just played. Like we just got enough
- 1:31:19Speaker 4: of the notes that you're like, Oh, goosebumps. I get it.
- 1:31:22Speaker 4: Like it comes in just that one little, like little bit.
- 1:31:26Speaker 4: And I'm just like, damn, it worked.
- 1:31:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:31:28Speaker 6: You bastard. You worked it in. It worked because they
- 1:31:31Speaker 6: saved it.
- 1:31:32Speaker 4: And it worked. Yeah. If they were playing it while
- 1:31:34Speaker 4: he's running down the street, I'd be like, Oh, this
- 1:31:36Speaker 4: is so tired. And like, Now they're going to play
- 1:31:38Speaker 4: the whole rest of this movie. So the fact that
- 1:31:41Speaker 4: they just tease you with it, you're like, damn it,
- 1:31:43Speaker 4: it still works. This many years later, it still works.
- 1:31:47Speaker 4: So it's like, yeah, that last little music kicks in
- 1:31:51Speaker 4: and the decision. And so, yeah, it's a hell of
- 1:31:55Speaker 4: a movie. Yeah, very enjoyable. And I do hope that
- 1:31:58Speaker 4: they do something. Again, just for his performance alone is
- 1:32:02Speaker 4: enough that I kind of want to see more of.
- 1:32:03Speaker 4: For sure. in this role and it'd be nice if
- 1:32:07Speaker 4: Googler came in.
- 1:32:07Speaker 6: Yeah. I heard Thanksgiving of this year, so hopefully it
- 1:32:11Speaker 6: stays on track and maybe I'll be back next year
- 1:32:13Speaker 6: in Louisville. We'll talk about a Creed two positive reviews.
- 1:32:17Speaker 6: That is my dream. Yeah.
- 1:32:21Speaker 4: What's our tagline on Creed two?
- 1:32:23Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:32:25Speaker 4: A new adventure. Where do you go with this?
- 1:32:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:32:30Speaker 4: Ah so is there anything we didn't hit along the way.
- 1:32:33Speaker 6: I don't think so i think we nailed everything that
- 1:32:35Speaker 6: i think we got yeah most of it's pretty impressive.
