- 0:28[SPEAKER_03]: The more things change, the more they stay the same.
- 0:30[SPEAKER_03]: Still very excited to be in the middle of Fall Camp as Oklahoma counts down to their kickoff on September 4th and it is still hot as can be and we are all melting as we try to bring you the best Oklahoma coverage that you can find anywhere across the interwebs.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_03]: And further beyond Ryan Chapman here joined by the usual crew.
- 0:50[SPEAKER_03]: We've got our man who is making a trip down to okay see this week and very excited about it.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_03]: The great John Hoover boss man.
- 0:58[SPEAKER_01]: How you big man good.
- 1:00[SPEAKER_01]: I've been embroiled in this long two year two and a half year project going on.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_01]: of declorine and getting rid of stuff and throwing things out and selling what I could and just trying to live a little more Spartan existence.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_01]: And as I'm cleaning out the garage you guys, I found this gym.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_01]: Oops.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_01]: Little hoove, junior year, can't see the lights are reflecting, but you can see my intensity of pre-game intensity, the actual proof that John Hoover did play football, there is a photo that exists.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know where that other thing's been, it's been in a folder and a box wrapped up somewhere.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_03]: I was in the garage or something man to come across that everybody just started laughing like what is this I was like that's 16-year-old John Hoover is what that is hey I wish I could say I've not yet seen that in Tidstie from who but if you sat next to him The first box when his Photoshop doesn't work You can ask many of people I would hit up specifically the great Chandler angle-break in Holy and Mason young as they look to me and they're like
- 2:05[SPEAKER_03]: who was yelling at his computer and I'm just like, I just let it happen in the five minutes, he'll be good, not mad at you.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_01]: It's just a nature taking, it's course.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_03]: He's moved from hitting other humans to hitting computers, which may be the way of the future when we wore going to war with all of the robots elsewhere.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_03]: God, I mean, Carson Field as well, Carson.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_03]: Again, same check up as last week.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_03]: I sincerely hope I love when you get your golf game going, but I hope that you've been taking it easy because it's just too hot to have to be outside.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, trying to play a little bit less this time of year.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_00]: 107's Nojo doesn't seem like it's going to cool down anytime soon.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_00]: Hopefully the sidelines of the bit cooler in Ann Arbor for me, that would be really nice.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_00]: But I think that Friday night game, I think we're all kind of screwed there.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's going to be nasty, muggy.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe some insects, but he decided it's football season.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_00]: I think we can all agree that's exciting.
- 2:57[SPEAKER_03]: Start hydrating right now.
- 2:59[SPEAKER_03]: That's why Abar usually plays hockey this time here trying to get a near an ice ring.
- 3:04[SPEAKER_03]: Although, are you getting any sleep?
- 3:05[SPEAKER_03]: The cubs are screwing up everyone's sleep schedule.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_03]: I was trying to track that last night just because it's more fun to watch that.
- 3:11[SPEAKER_03]: It means that my mornings are better quite frankly.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_03]: And, and I was like the rain delay.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_03]: Can you win a game of nine innings?
- 3:19[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, as long as we win, I'm good with it.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_02]: It's been a nice couple days.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_02]: Build the statue for Pete Kerr Armstrong right now, build it yesterday.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_02]: And who've going back to what Ryan was talking about with you, you're just channeling your inner Nate Allen by your computer, right?
- 3:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he taught me, my whole taught me interviews stick to it, and this late-all taught me how to man up against man's greatest art genemy, which is the laptop computer.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_03]: Hey, listen, it comes for us all as it does their avers boys of summer will soon pass to the ton over to the boys of fall, which we're all very, very excited for, but let's waste no other time.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_03]: Let's dive in.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_03]: I'm sure if you've been locked in, if you're in the OU ecosystem, you've done the smart thing, which is head to Okuma Sooner's onside.com to read all the reporting coming out of the weekend.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_03]: Probably the most notable thing to happen so far at Fall Camp was unfortunately a note that you never want to talk about, but Oklahoma into their scrimmage last Saturday, sounded like outside of a bumper or bruise for a guy like this, I've been walking around the opening kick off, no less, shout out to Marco Murray one time.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_03]: keep him off the field if you're trying to win an national title.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_03]: Neither you know there.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_03]: Oklahoma rolled through their scrimmage and unfortunately it was the second half of it that kind of stood out.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_03]: Jake Myclaw, Oklahoma Center, rolled up on it, sat it like and that led to a very doom and gloom Saturday, a very doom and gloom Sunday.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_03]: Who of you at the report for us on Monday was the thing that everybody was waiting on.
- 4:58[SPEAKER_03]: The Jake Myclaw update.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_03]: What can you fill us
- 5:04[SPEAKER_01]: process that looks forward to as far as having my clip back in and replacing him and and all that stuff throughout can and after I'm sorry after it was reported by Brandon Drumbo you insider I guess on his his podcast their video recap that they did so shout out drum For breaking that news because everybody was on it for the next three days and I had a source reach out to me So here's what's wrong with my killer It's a he did get rolled up on from behind
- 5:32[SPEAKER_01]: And those entries are often an ankle or an MCL.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_01]: It's usually one of those two things.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_01]: In this case, it was the L, the knee got pulled a little bit in one direction.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_01]: Sprained MCL is out four to six weeks.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_01]: So bad news, he's hurt, he's out four to six weeks.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_01]: Good news, he's not out for the year.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_01]: He's only out four to six weeks.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_01]: So we're not talking about four to six games.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_01]: We're talking about four to six weeks from the time of the injury, which on this timetable on this particular scale.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_01]: The front side of that would be the Michigan game.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_01]: Like if he's like three and a half weeks healed and getting practice reps that week, he can against Michigan.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_01]: More likely, it's gonna be the Georgia game.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_01]: And I would say for sure, because two months down the road, you're looking at eight weeks unless there's some kind of setback.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_01]: I would say for sure, he's gonna be available against Texas.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_01]: So again, not great news, but not the worst news.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_01]: don't get your hopes up for a Michigan and don't rule out the fact that they're that Oklahoma and their medical team athletic training staff and their athletes have had many many many many since preventals has been back setbacks that we've talked about discussed and everything else so don't get your hopes up too much but don't count them out for the season
- 6:56[SPEAKER_03]: And this is where we throw in the typical disclaimer.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_03]: Every human's different, every knee is different.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_03]: Everyone's pain tolerance and a lot of that stuff where you talk about front end of windows and back end of windows and not saying that someone that doesn't come back early is not tough for anything, but there's just pain tolerance, position, flexibility.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_03]: all that stuff, but like we said, the great news is that this is not a season ender, which was a lot of the fear, or really not especially for a guy in Jake Michael that it's not just that he's your veteran and coming back, but everything about how much more comfortable he was looking his command to the offense and the importance of that being from the center position.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_03]: Especially as even though Oklahoma feels much much better about what they've got coming back, it was still going to be younger football players on either side of them, uh, something to guide that through.
- 7:40[SPEAKER_03]: But Carson, in the interim and part of what's going to dominate the rest of this week, and in the rest of fall camp is just going to be my class, staying over on the sideline, who's the next man up, what are those options look like?
- 7:52[SPEAKER_03]: I know that you kind of detailed that on Tuesday morning, I believe, but
- 7:57[SPEAKER_03]: We got three names to kind of look at, at least as the obvious ones kind of run us through what could the potential replacement in the meantime look like for Oklahoma.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you look gingery, and I mean, there's no sugar coating that it's a big deal.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Jake Mikello is one of the more consistent offensive linemen for this team last year did a really good job, especially in the past blocking situations.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_00]: But there are a lot of pretty good options to fill in for him until he's 100% ready to go.
- 8:24[SPEAKER_00]: You look at a guy like Caleb Needa, who at Western Kentucky last year, really effective past blocker that was his strength.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_00]: But a really good overall player, and yes, that is a group of five school,
- 8:36[SPEAKER_00]: LSU last year was a 13 to 10 win for LSU and say what you will about that LSU team last year they weren't very good.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_00]: I think they went 7 and 5 in the regular season.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_00]: That defense was still really really solid though.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_00]: That is the one thing that largely was pretty good throughout the year for them and Caleb need to held his own against a really solid LSU defense.
- 8:57[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that's got to be encouraging someone that's done this before started his career at Virginia Tech didn't play much there But it was really effective last year at Western Kentucky.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_00]: That's a good option.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_00]: We've heard But good things about know a best a freshman.
- 9:11[SPEAKER_00]: Not as highly recruited as a bunch of the other OU offensive linemen and past years like Michael Fassousey Ryan Foj
- 9:18[SPEAKER_00]: but everything we've heard is he might be a day one contributor right in foj when as far as to say he might be a day one starter who knows if that will turn out to be the case but he's another guy that I think he's a guard by train but is capable of playing the center position we've heard he's a personal guy so I don't think that's a bad option and then either um
- 9:37[SPEAKER_00]: just going back to Ryan O. J.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_00]: That's that's someone that he's a guard, but he talked about he highlighted when we talked to him a couple weeks ago that his versatility is really improved.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_00]: He played some tackle last year.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_00]: He played some guard last year and he said that he'd be able to play any spot that was asked for him.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_00]: So maybe that sinner, maybe it's not the positive that could come from him moving the sinner as maybe he plays there in a guy like Heath Osida who started 15 games in the SEC.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe he's able to be the starting guard.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_00]: that opens up alongside any peer loop, the other side.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_00]: So that's the really pretty realistic option.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't think any of them are particularly bad.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_00]: Caleb needs a scene like the safest one just because he has the most experience at center.
- 10:20[SPEAKER_00]: He has played even just one SEC defense.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_00]: I think that goes a long way.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_00]: So it's going to be interesting, but I think that
- 10:27[SPEAKER_00]: It's not Doom's day seeing this injury situation like who said it's good news in the sense that it's not season-ending obviously we heard the tweets we saw the panic mode and a lot of OU fans were in on Saturday evening hearing that it's likely only four to six weeks I think that is refreshing um getting a guy like that whether it's early Michigan game or he's back by Texas I think I think that it could be a lot worse um and it seems like there are a couple guys that
- 10:55[SPEAKER_03]: Bo-J, I think that you go back and watch Ryan, Bo-J, just speak last week.
- 11:00[SPEAKER_03]: Someone that'll make a lot of Oakma fans excited when he's just like, yeah, I need to be the place center.
- 11:04[SPEAKER_03]: I'll take off the glove, I'll go snap right now.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_03]: He's someone that had some emergency center work at practice a year ago, remember when Jake Michael would down with this infection and you're shuffled on the right side of the line.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_03]: For me, she weewoo.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_03]: Also, I don't know how much stock he put into like,
- 11:18[SPEAKER_03]: All American game, high school practices, things like that, but foj was taken snaps or snapping, excuse me, it's centered just to make room for that as you get into an all-star situation, but Brian, we nail it down.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_03]: What do you think Bill Bean boasts looking for, right?
- 11:32[SPEAKER_03]: We know that he looks for his best five.
- 11:34[SPEAKER_03]: He likes to tinker, but how do you balance?
- 11:37[SPEAKER_03]: mastery of the offense, all the extra responsibilities that come at centers, most of maybe a guard, and then I think that something that cannot be separated from its conversation is when you look at the first half of the schedule if
- 11:50[SPEAKER_03]: any of these big games that we've talked about it's not just playing a Michigan game it's not just playing a Georgia game it's playing in the big house and playing between the hedges against two of the best defensive lines that the Oklahoma will play it's a very, very interesting I think calculus, calculation, offensive lineary, whatever you want to call it this is why Bill Bean Bo gets paid a lot of money to put together this group.
- 12:14[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, when we talked to Bill Beanbow a few weeks ago, he talked about the center position and how critical it was to the, not only the offensive line, but the offense as a whole basically said, it's sort of clearly the number two responsibility position in the offense behind the quarterback, the number two most important position to things, which is why I think it's going to be really difficult for a guy like Noah Best to do it.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_02]: Caleb Nita has the experience obviously like Carson mentioned had some success against LSU and has you know started a good number of games at center in his career even if it is at Western Kentucky Ryan Fogey.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know that he's going to be the number one option but is certainly a good sort of emergency option, especially when you've got Heath O'Zyder there.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_02]: But he did get some time there last year when Fibetchi, we would slid in for Jake Michael, I think it'll probably be a pretty similar situation to that, at least until no a best gets fully up to speed.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_02]: I think they're still really high on him, but it's just really difficult.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_02]: There's only a couple of guys who have been able to, you know, step into that role as a freshman and play center in Bill Beaton Bow's group.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_02]: And there's a reason why it's so difficult.
- 13:36[SPEAKER_02]: So I think it's going to be tough there.
- 13:39[SPEAKER_02]: But at least they've got some options and this goes to
- 13:42[SPEAKER_02]: What, Jim Naggi and Bill Beatinbo have talked about quite a bit, just recruiting much more versatility in that group.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that pays off when you've got a guy like Fogey, you've got a guy like Best, you've got a guy like Heath Osida who can slide over and play a couple of spots and figure out what that best way to make that puzzle work.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_03]: I know that a lot of people, I think, would be, I know, entice love or be excited by the idea to have a foe J slide over.
- 14:16[SPEAKER_03]: Here's just something else to consider as well.
- 14:18[SPEAKER_03]: And it's something that Oklahoma will be considering is that Ryan foe J's, your number three tackle, as well, right?
- 14:24[SPEAKER_03]: If anything happens to Amaran Harris or Michael Fassuci, we've already talked about the disfassuci's been in bubble wrap at various times that foe J kicks out to left tackle.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_03]: Now, all of a sudden, there's the potential of, uh, in that club, well, you don't wish me this, but we know this is football in a pile, someone gets rolled up on, kind of like what exactly after Jake Michael.
- 14:47[SPEAKER_03]: Now, not only would you be risking your center in that position, you'd also be risking your number three tackle, and then suddenly it goes from,
- 14:55[SPEAKER_03]: feel him really good who've about the depth up and down and knowing that even a fogey wins that right guard spot that something that is out there anyway if he's playing right guard.
- 15:04[SPEAKER_03]: It really starts to stress things.
- 15:06[SPEAKER_03]: It's an easier decision maybe to do that when you're just potentially being down.
- 15:10[SPEAKER_03]: One guy is supposed to already out your center.
- 15:12[SPEAKER_03]: Now you're doubling down on that risk with your attack.
- 15:16[SPEAKER_03]: It becomes like I think a very interesting conversation and like trying to fit those pieces together for being both in this offensive stat.
- 15:23[SPEAKER_01]: Well, number one, that's why you pay your offensive line coach over a million dollars a year to figure that stuff out.
- 15:29[SPEAKER_01]: Number two, that's why you have spring football practice, right?
- 15:32[SPEAKER_01]: That's why you have offseason workouts.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_01]: That's why you have to try to find those guys to develop those guys.
- 15:38[SPEAKER_01]: Identify, they are what characteristics they have that can loan themselves, lend themselves to stepping in at a moment's notice.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, I think this guy can play.
- 15:45[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, he might be a little ahead of schedule.
- 15:47[SPEAKER_01]: Let's try and roll a freshman in there.
- 15:48[SPEAKER_01]: So,
- 15:49[SPEAKER_01]: Nothing out of the ordinary.
- 15:51[SPEAKER_01]: Certainly from what we've seen for this team list, guys, I've covered this team since 2004.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_01]: Almost, I would say, I would say rare, but I don't think that's rare enough.
- 16:02[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think that's a big enough word.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_01]: Never, almost never, does Oklahoma get through training camp without offensive linemen having to roll over, step over, slide over, kick out.
- 16:12[SPEAKER_01]: So, um,
- 16:14[SPEAKER_01]: Nothing, nothing to panic about, but something to keep an eye on, I guess, is this a micro-endry.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_01]: It's a four weeks of talking about the four to six weeks, the fourth week is the Michigan game.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_01]: So if he's ahead of schedule, that's a small possibility.
- 16:33[SPEAKER_03]: It's also something to and again, we talked about this at the very very start of camp with trial Harris and things like that.
- 16:40[SPEAKER_03]: I hold no ill thoughts or anything to anyone that kind of goes brace for impact.
- 16:46[SPEAKER_03]: Oh my gosh, here we go again.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_03]: But if you take a half step back on Monday morning is, you know, I did not go into do radio.
- 16:54[SPEAKER_03]: I just did exercise and pull that ESPN's college football page and rolling through the top headlines.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_03]: they list like 12 headlines on the side and literally eight of the 12 were about various injuries coming out of camp, saw across the country, like a old pal, Jane Gibson, uh, about over at South Carolina.
- 17:12[SPEAKER_03]: That was one of those that was roped into that.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_03]: I think we all saw Carson as Oklahoma goes through this process.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_03]: There are the reports of Trevor Gooseby, the Texas stud tackle coming out of Monday's practice, and it sounds like his timetable is almost exactly the same, not exactly the same thing.
- 17:27[SPEAKER_03]: But this is also one of those things where as long as they don't mount and as long as guys get back in, trust us, we get it, we've covered all of these injury woes here, but to a certain extent, this is where every coach cross-cursionist about how much do we prepare the guys for the season versus risking the fact that anytime you're preparing someone
- 17:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think it really is a balance.
- 17:51[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's refreshing to hear about trial Harris from Brent, then a bulls last week.
- 17:56[SPEAKER_00]: He's making explosive plays out there really ramping up.
- 18:00[SPEAKER_00]: I know that like you said, I think it's natural to be a little bit skeptical about injuries and newcomers on the last year of Injavani Gibson.
- 18:09[SPEAKER_00]: big expectations, broke his leg obviously during the spring didn't get to play and really didn't get ramped up until the last few weeks.
- 18:16[SPEAKER_00]: So I mean that recency of that between the plethora of injuries the year before that, I understand some of the skepticism of the just...
- 18:25[SPEAKER_00]: Thinking things aren't going to be all right and that's apartment, but good to hear about trail Harris, even with the microless situation, things could be a lot worse going into the season.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you see key players go down in spring games, fall practices.
- 18:38[SPEAKER_00]: That's just part of the game.
- 18:40[SPEAKER_00]: You can't go 100% Scott free from injuries as a college football team.
- 18:45[SPEAKER_00]: It's just not going to happen.
- 18:47[SPEAKER_00]: So I think where they are right now, I think it's a good place to be.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_03]: You look at it too and we're gonna let that dark cloud that has been looming over the pod move on out because it's not been all doom and gloom for the Oklahoma offense.
- 18:59[SPEAKER_03]: Certainly coming out of camp.
- 19:00[SPEAKER_03]: Of course, you mentioned trial here.
- 19:02[SPEAKER_03]: Those what they're doing is far as every time that a trial Harris clip gets tossed out there.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_03]: It's like a don't freak out.
- 19:10[SPEAKER_03]: He's coming along all the way down to Ryan and I were standing over by Isaiah satania yesterday is I asked him about, I think it was me.
- 19:18[SPEAKER_03]: It was hot.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_03]: Charles Harris and Satanya, if you just read what he said, you might be like, okay, yeah, good, awesome.
- 19:26[SPEAKER_03]: It's the way that Satanya's eyes lit up, Ryan.
- 19:29[SPEAKER_03]: And there's a big smile and he starts not in his head.
- 19:31[SPEAKER_03]: You can tell he's like, this is going to be fun.
- 19:33[SPEAKER_03]: You've got that coming along.
- 19:34[SPEAKER_03]: I know that you asked and wrote about both Mani Choice and Elijah Thomas, which that story is up.
- 19:39[SPEAKER_03]: Oklahoma suitors on SI.
- 19:41[SPEAKER_03]: dot com it's a group that we had questions about going out of the spring into the summer of just like okay you need to get some of those guys a lot of topics had been banged up trial certainly but it sounds like at least that Oklahoma's wide receiver core pretty pleased with how they've grown and ramped up here through the middle stages of fall camp.
- 19:59[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, no doubt Isaiah satania was fired up about it and he said, hey, my role is changing.
- 20:05[SPEAKER_02]: It's not a matter of just going to look to me and try to make that play.
- 20:09[SPEAKER_02]: He's going to be looking all over the field because he's got many more options.
- 20:13[SPEAKER_02]: And he did a year ago when Isaiah satania was clearly their number one receiver.
- 20:19[SPEAKER_02]: And certainly him and Dion Berks were the only guys who really put up much numbers in that position group at all.
- 20:28[SPEAKER_02]: still a lot of unproven talent outside of trail harris obviously he had a fantastic season last year ad virginia and everything looks good there not only you know what we heard from Isaiah Satan yesterday but what we've heard from other guys what we've seen with our own eyes last week
- 20:48[SPEAKER_02]: As things opened up, certainly he looks like the real deal and then, you know, they've got a lot of really young talent, not only those two guys you mentioned Elijah Thomas, who Isaiah Zetanya called, made in a lab, but also made a choice and just see a Rogers, he had really good things to say about him, as well, even though there was some question over how you pronounced his name right.
- 21:16[SPEAKER_02]: But we got through that.
- 21:17[SPEAKER_02]: All right, Ryan, I did okay.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_02]: I did okay, I think you did.
- 21:22[SPEAKER_02]: You just took Isaiah a little bit to get to it, which hey, might have been because of the heat and because he had just been out practicing in it.
- 21:30[SPEAKER_02]: But, uh,
- 21:32[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it was really complimentary of that group and really complimentary about the way that that depth can help elevate his game.
- 21:41[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe the numbers might not be as high, but the production level can be higher as a group with the depth that they're building there.
- 21:52[SPEAKER_03]: I'm just excited to it goes all the way back to the very first time that Jim Nagy spoke about Charles Harris in the addition.
- 22:00[SPEAKER_03]: I don't think anyone was saying like, Pupu to Dion Burks, that was not what they were saying at all.
- 22:04[SPEAKER_03]: But it's like Dion Burks, Isaiah, Satania, ideally probably occupied the same spot and Oklahoma was doing everything they could to get those guys.
- 22:12[SPEAKER_03]: on the field together.
- 22:13[SPEAKER_03]: Trell be more of an outside threat.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_03]: I think Oklahoma's very, very excited about what this combination is going to look like and how all these pieces fit together.
- 22:22[SPEAKER_03]: And it leads us into, yeah, go ahead.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_01]: Just a quick tack on here.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_01]: Here's how excited Oklahoma fans should be about the combination of Isaiah, Satania, and Terrell Harris.
- 22:32[SPEAKER_01]: Today, the watch list came out for the bulletin card.
- 22:37[SPEAKER_01]: Both guys are on it.
- 22:38[SPEAKER_01]: So.
- 22:39[SPEAKER_01]: That's fairly rare when you have a team with two receivers on the preseason award watch list.
- 22:45[SPEAKER_01]: So some to watch, some to keep an eye on.
- 22:48[SPEAKER_03]: Two past catchers, not receivers because I have gotten a call for the blitz.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_03]: And you're right for it.
- 22:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, anybody.
- 22:53[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you can be on the blitz and a call as long as we're catching passes.
- 22:56[SPEAKER_01]: That's right.
- 22:57[SPEAKER_01]: Not our receivers.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_01]: Even though they've only ever given it to a receiver, but they kind of stickily about that whole.
- 23:05[SPEAKER_01]: We have to tie it ends too.
- 23:08[SPEAKER_01]: We give it to flex players, they will call you, they will call you and shout out the jackout.
- 23:14[SPEAKER_03]: I got the call.
- 23:14[SPEAKER_03]: Joshua at the story.
- 23:15[SPEAKER_03]: I got the call.
- 23:16[SPEAKER_01]: Multiple times.
- 23:17[SPEAKER_01]: They'll call you, yes.
- 23:18[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 23:19[SPEAKER_01]: Get it.
- 23:20[SPEAKER_01]: They're on top of it.
- 23:20[SPEAKER_01]: Their Google alerts are set for Oklahoma Centers on uside.com, which is what you should do, too.
- 23:26[SPEAKER_01]: Embrace who you are, man.
- 23:27[SPEAKER_01]: Embrace your identity.
- 23:29[SPEAKER_03]: It's okay.
- 23:29[SPEAKER_03]: Everyone likes wider receivers.
- 23:31[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know why you have to like expect and also the titans have their own award, but that's either here.
- 23:35[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 23:36[SPEAKER_03]: Nor, there.
- 23:37[SPEAKER_03]: Avery, you mentioned that Isaiah is a Tanya labeled Elijah Thomas as a guy that was built in a lab.
- 23:44[SPEAKER_03]: I would like to put this forward to everyone.
- 23:46[SPEAKER_03]: I know that guys are built in labs.
- 23:48[SPEAKER_03]: I know that
- 23:49[SPEAKER_03]: uh... everyone's always looking for a diamond in the rough on the roster uh... then there are like lab grown diamonds and that applies to running back jontan hat and junior uh... he's a guy that i think no one was under any illusion if he could just uh... uh... get going in the right direction that would be something that everyone's excited about if he talked to say that we're up and said yesterday uh... hat and gets brought up and say which is like yeah he's two thirty five and runs twenty miles an hour and car so it was almost like is he was registering what he was saying he like stopped and smiled he's like
- 24:17[SPEAKER_03]: which is a lot.
- 24:18[SPEAKER_03]: That's good.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_03]: It's one of the spots where it feels like Zagarab to this built himself.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_03]: It knocked off some of the rest.
- 24:25[SPEAKER_03]: I think you're going to be your RB1 on opening day, Louis Devont still around, but hadn't come back from concussion protocol.
- 24:31[SPEAKER_03]: Listen, we're simple people.
- 24:32[SPEAKER_03]: We want to see Jonathan hatting me to safety head on and let's just see what happens.
- 24:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, especially after the spring game, how we really got to see that, that speed, that size, just how, how much of a bell count running back, he can be.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I think Oklahoma is kind of itching for something like that.
- 24:49[SPEAKER_00]: And I like the versatility of this position group, Robinson, maybe not the 235.
- 24:55[SPEAKER_00]: 22 mile per hour, kind of mold, but he's someone that definitely can be a forceful running back.
- 25:01[SPEAKER_00]: We've seen that time and time again throughout his first two years.
- 25:04[SPEAKER_00]: I would have been a really good pass catcher, someone that's very versatile, Tory Playlock.
- 25:10[SPEAKER_00]: We saw phases of what he could do last year, so I love the versatility in this position.
- 25:14[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm just really excited for that UTEP game, just to see what does and does it work.
- 25:19[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's a game that you tap is a really, really not good football team.
- 25:23[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be a 50 point game plus.
- 25:26[SPEAKER_00]: So it's going to be an opportunity to more or less empty the bench.
- 25:29[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm excited to see what happened can do.
- 25:31[SPEAKER_00]: Does Evan Walker assuming he gets some playing time?
- 25:34[SPEAKER_00]: Andy Bass may be getting some touches now.
- 25:36[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm just really curious to see what this looks like.
- 25:39[SPEAKER_00]: You're, I think you're probably right at Robinson of that.
- 25:41[SPEAKER_00]: Probably the favorites to win the starting job.
- 25:44[SPEAKER_00]: But I think there are a lot of people more guys that can do different things that I think makes this position group so interesting.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to speak out of turn, but guys I've been watching some preseason like workout videos and some other preseason type stuff.
- 25:59[SPEAKER_01]: And two people jumped out at me.
- 26:03[SPEAKER_01]: Two generations apart.
- 26:04[SPEAKER_01]: One was Marcus Dupri.
- 26:07[SPEAKER_01]: The other was Derek Henry.
- 26:08[SPEAKER_01]: I've been watching like workout videos and running over people and
- 26:12[SPEAKER_01]: numbers they've been putting up and all that kind of stuff.
- 26:15[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to get ahead of myself, but Jonathan Hatton looks physically a little bit like in that mold.
- 26:21[SPEAKER_01]: Am I wrong?
- 26:24[SPEAKER_03]: He looks like an absolute beast and I think that for Oklahoma here here's like the I don't know if this is an issue But when we've seen Xavier Robinson be healthy like that's all you need out of the right right He's been an impact player and it's been in some of the biggest games I know that two seasons ago how many big games were there, but he gets to Alabama Missouri a year ago old miss but
- 26:45[SPEAKER_03]: It's like that thing that Robinson's healthy.
- 26:47[SPEAKER_03]: You want all the Robinson, but it's also like look at that guy because you're right who he's one of those guys that Xavier Robinson is a very, very impressive and he's excellent, but if we're just talking about the running back room we're going to order those guys off the bus we're throwing hat.
- 27:01[SPEAKER_03]: Now that they're first, and then it's safe, there's gonna be a really behind him.
- 27:03[SPEAKER_03]: And everyone said, we got to tackle those two guys today, but right, it's just not something that style of runner feels like Oklahoma hasn't really had like, Tommy Walker would try to run through you, but I think it's been since maybe, and he's not quite the Derek Henry mode, but like a Somash API or I know, oh gosh, we got to tackle this guy and also he's got the ability to shake the slew to make us look silly if we're too worried about tight in the chin strap
- 27:30[SPEAKER_03]: follow along for the ride with Samaja.
- 27:33[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, obviously a little bit different, but you know, he is sort of that kind of player and that's somebody that they need, especially to have a couple of guys that have that ability and save your Robinson, obviously not the.
- 27:48[SPEAKER_02]: quite the physical specimen that Jonathan Hatton is, but if you can bounce back between those two guys and try to keep them maybe a little bit fresher than they've been than Xavier Robinson has been because as you mentioned he has been productive when he's healthy in big time games for them and I think
- 28:10[SPEAKER_02]: I would agree that he's probably more than likely the starting running back to open the season, but Jonathan Hatton, you know, barring injury is going to get plenty of carries, you know, who didn't bring up the name of Adrian Peterson, but just the physical specimen, I'm not saying he's going to be Adrian Peterson, because that's a very high bar, but the physical specimens sort of
- 28:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I thought I actually did think about bringing up Adrian, but at 210 pounds is a freshman.
- 28:45[SPEAKER_01]: It just looks different than what these guys, these guys look like lumber jacks out there.
- 28:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I just Adrian looked like a superhero, like he just pulled off the Batman costume or something.
- 28:54[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I just remember some of those guys from those teams talking about some of the feats that Adrian Peterson could pull off, jumping up on platforms and all kinds of stuff.
- 29:06[SPEAKER_02]: And you know, we haven't heard that necessarily about Jonathan Hatton, but he certainly looks like a guy who could do some things that just make you shake your head.
- 29:14[SPEAKER_01]: If I'm not mistaken, and my memory is tricky obviously for numerous reasons, but a 45 pound weight in each hand.
- 29:22[SPEAKER_01]: and he box jumped onto like a 36-inch box.
- 29:25[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I believe that's the thing I'm referring to.
- 29:28[SPEAKER_01]: And then he gets out of the car and lines up in high tops that are untied and runs like a 4-4.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_01]: And everybody's just standing there going, what's going on here?
- 29:39[SPEAKER_01]: So those are parts, parts of the lore of Adrian Peterson's freshman year arrival on campus.
- 29:45[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, this is a freshman, this kid's 18 years old, what?
- 29:49[SPEAKER_02]: and then obviously we see what happens, though.
- 29:52[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not saying again that he's gonna live up to that bar, but those are some of the comparisons that you hear.
- 29:58[SPEAKER_02]: Of course, we also heard Marcus Major compared to Adrian Peterson a few years ago, and we know how that turned out.
- 30:04[SPEAKER_03]: Well, he just, when he runs, he would just go into your chest and steal your heart.
- 30:09[SPEAKER_03]: And it's incredible.
- 30:11[SPEAKER_03]: There's a reason that Adrian's that he is like, when you get into NBA drafts season, there's a couple of guys that should be on the band comparison list.
- 30:18[SPEAKER_03]: Like, when they're like, he's got shades of Lebron or saves of inches.
- 30:21[SPEAKER_03]: No, this guy is a rookie coming to the NBA.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_03]: And he may eventually be that, but
- 30:26[SPEAKER_03]: There's a very, very elite group of guys that is the band comparison list and Adrian is on that, he earned his way on that very, very quickly.
- 30:36[SPEAKER_03]: I just think the best news about this running back room is more than anything.
- 30:39[SPEAKER_03]: You go all the way that to before spring ball, when we got to meet some of the new assistants, and we all enjoyed talking to Dylan McCall, but I just remember, you know, Brady kind of asked him and he ran a great story with us just about like, what is your vision for it's a running back room that has kind of been banged up these last couple of years.
- 30:57[SPEAKER_03]: And while injuries are injuries like, how do you kind of combat that and Dylan was pretty,
- 31:04[SPEAKER_03]: Just forward-facing about like what you do is you give everybody the carries in the spring early in fall campus a big rotation You slowly like whittle that down as you get closer and closer to game day, which is why when you came out of like the first weekend and It's like not enough on anybody but like if you didn't here Xavier Robinson is the first guy.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_03]: I was like, okay
- 31:24[SPEAKER_03]: That's fine.
- 31:25[SPEAKER_03]: Let's check in here in a couple of weeks, and if you get to like August 20th, and you're still not here in Xavier Robinson's names, and maybe you hit a, I don't know if a panic button, or you just kind of raised an eyebrow, it's a guy that didn't practice a ton all throughout the spring.
- 31:38[SPEAKER_03]: Need to dock some rust off, and it feels like his brunt videos would say he's coming on right on time here in fall camp, and that certainly good news is this offense tries to leave their mark in the running game and everything that we've talked about with that.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_03]: all off season long.
- 31:50[SPEAKER_03]: On the other side of the ball, the conversations are a little bit different feels like for the most part.
- 31:56[SPEAKER_03]: Pick your formation, pick your starting line up.
- 31:59[SPEAKER_03]: We know it's going to be a heavier with it like for instance.
- 32:01[SPEAKER_03]: You can start PJ, you can start Danny of Koye, they're both going to play a lot.
- 32:05[SPEAKER_03]: I think everyone's cool with that.
- 32:06[SPEAKER_03]: You can start Colsonal Vinacigi, Reggie Powers, both of those guys going to play a ton.
- 32:10[SPEAKER_03]: A lot of the stuff has been kind of like
- 32:12[SPEAKER_03]: What's that depth and a look like?
- 32:13[SPEAKER_03]: What's the next way of going to look like?
- 32:15[SPEAKER_03]: And we got to talk to James Nestah yesterday as well in that lineback room and there's a ton of excitement for Kip Lewis, no one high in a key and and Cole Sullivan certainly, but of course this is a guy that Oklahoma needs to step up because even when Brent Minimal says had established guys come and back you just think back to the lineback rotations a year ago and if we had told you that you're going to have all these established guys and yet Owen High in a key is going to break through like
- 32:38[SPEAKER_03]: Britt Binnables wants to rotate those linebackers if nothing else so that when he gets to 2027 and you don't have kip and you don't have Owen, you're not throwing a guy out there that has basically no experience or anything like that.
- 32:51[SPEAKER_00]: I thought I was really good to talk to James Nesta here a little bit about where he's at.
- 32:55[SPEAKER_00]: I think something OU does really well is getting some of their younger guys a lot of special teams rep.
- 33:00[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you see that with maybe choice, Elijah Thomas especially was fantastic and a lot of a kit coverage situation last year.
- 33:08[SPEAKER_00]: And I think
- 33:09[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's so beneficial even if it's not first or second group on the defense, on the offense, whatever it is, just getting that real-world experience against really, really good teams.
- 33:19[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's going to be big for a guy like James Nessa and they need him to be good.
- 33:23[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you look at, yes, they have Owen Heinecki, Kip Lewis, Cole Sullivan, maybe he's at the linebacker, maybe he's at Cheetahmore.
- 33:30[SPEAKER_00]: Last year, they had Samyoma Sigo and Kobe McKinsey though.
- 33:33[SPEAKER_00]: It was a lot deeper of a rotation as far
- 33:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, you would keep a no-in, but you also had two really good starter caliper players also in the lineback room with those guys gone, Taylorheim injured.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_00]: They need James Nesta to be a really big piece, even if he's not a quote starter for this defense.
- 33:51[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that's going to be interesting to see.
- 33:54[SPEAKER_00]: What kind of jump he takes, how effective he is, because I mean, he's only played, I think, 46 defensive snaps in his first two years.
- 34:01[SPEAKER_00]: He's inexperienced, as far as defensive plays go.
- 34:04[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of special experiences.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_00]: Periods excited to see how that translates.
- 34:08[SPEAKER_00]: Some of the other linebackers they could put in there, like a Marcus James, maybe, maybe some of the freshmen they got.
- 34:14[SPEAKER_00]: So I think it's gonna be fascinating and James Nesta, I mean, after such a small role, going to a big one, I think that is a big jump to make, but for everything he told us, he seems ready for it.
- 34:25[SPEAKER_03]: And I know this is ultimate fall camp stuff Ryan of everything looks good in a uniform but it's just kind of incredible though with James Dessie you forget that that's a guy that arrived with two sport aspirations and I think that unless you're just a super star super star level the baseball side to be in Brick Venables lineback room I just wondered if eventually something's got to give with you know the level of dedication.
- 34:48[SPEAKER_03]: It's just really impressive to stand by James Nesson just see what he looked like out of the practice field in the spring, but then the
- 34:56[SPEAKER_03]: roll that forward into the fall and it's even more in this direction.
- 34:59[SPEAKER_03]: Like, it doesn't look like a guy that had a two sport.
- 35:02[SPEAKER_03]: He looks like a guy that was been rocking and rolling and that Jerry Schmidt had been putting all the live-back workouts on for years and years and years, which we have no, I have no concern about how the guys look and certainly print with those defense.
- 35:16[SPEAKER_03]: But it's just really, really impressive.
- 35:17[SPEAKER_03]: Again, the transformation, the dedication, of how quickly it feels like it's turned for James Ness to once he went all in on the football side of life.
- 35:24[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, no doubt about it and we thought that he had the talent to be able to do that once he fully dedicated like he says really tough to play both there's only be a hand guys who've been able to do it and do it effectively and still even those guys something you know was suffering a little bit.
- 35:45[SPEAKER_02]: While they were doing it, but James Nesta has gone all in on football and certainly is going to be a big piece for them because we've talked so much about the depth that Oklahoma had last year and how that fueled things, particularly at the line-backer group.
- 36:00[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, you look at Kobe McKinsey and Samuel Masigo, who weren't starters, at least at the end of the year.
- 36:07[SPEAKER_02]: But we're big time playmakers.
- 36:09[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, hey, you know, Samuel Masigo was one of their leading tacklers.
- 36:13[SPEAKER_02]: on the year, Kobe McKinsey, I think, still had like 32, so James Nesson doesn't have to be a star, but if he's a guy who can give you, you know, a handful of really solid snaps every game, you're going to feel really good about, you know, where he is and what that means also for the next couple of years with that group.
- 36:34[SPEAKER_03]: And then John, I'm pumped for like usually get to the U-TEP game, a game like that.
- 36:38[SPEAKER_03]: I'm more interested in the third quarter in a weird way than the first quarter of things go to script and things go to plan, but we continue to hear great things about tank Carrington, the thing that stands out to me about the true freshman up the middle is just that
- 36:52[SPEAKER_03]: uh... Britman was keeps making the comparison of his block recognition what he needs to do where he needs to be a civilier jay Jackson jay Jackson awesome not quite in the band comparison list quite yet we'll see but uh... having that and then uh... further i i feel like we've spent so much time on the other side of the line of scrimmage looking at the pj dania koi that
- 37:11[SPEAKER_03]: It's easy to forget.
- 37:12[SPEAKER_03]: It sounds like white Gilmour's coming on strong behind a Taylor wine, a Drake Krause, has been a guy that I think is going to have a role on this defense.
- 37:19[SPEAKER_03]: And maybe the most interesting guy is someone that haven't heard a ton about, I don't think it's like a bad thing necessarily, but part of Kenny Ozewalu, the UTSA transfer in the spring was when he flashes.
- 37:30[SPEAKER_03]: It's incredible.
- 37:31[SPEAKER_03]: It's just about consistency.
- 37:33[SPEAKER_03]: If Oklahoma can just get the high end of that in some spot duty, I don't know how Miguel Shea is graduated out, Marvin Jones Jr. drafted out Armace and Thomas who continues to shred it chiefs camp every chance he gets and then suddenly look at it and it's like, is this defense of income somehow deeper than it was a year ago, which feels weird to say, but might be true still.
- 37:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'll come in on Carrington real quick.
- 37:57[SPEAKER_01]: You'd like to see those transfers obviously hit.
- 38:00[SPEAKER_01]: You'd like to see them land and be able to contribute meaningful snaps throughout their time here, Loma.
- 38:07[SPEAKER_01]: But when you get a freshman like Carrington, three-star recruit, people kind of didn't really belong away by his recruitment.
- 38:15[SPEAKER_01]: But Florida State, he picked Oklahoma over Florida State now, Bama.
- 38:19[SPEAKER_01]: He grew up, guys.
- 38:21[SPEAKER_01]: He spent his first three years in high school at Bishop Gorman out in Vegas, so learning the the finer points of how to play excellent high school football And then he gets to Oklahoma and what is it people are talking about how ready he is to step on the field as a true freshman So we talked about this.
- 38:36[SPEAKER_01]: I think last time on the pot 295 pounds, so he's running out on the verge of becoming one of those four or five three hundred pounders that they've got on the interior If he keeps progressing like he like he has or like they say he has we hit we don't get to watch a ton of practice obviously
- 38:51[SPEAKER_01]: But if he keeps progressing on that track, guys, I would not be surprised to see tank character become the third or fourth defensive tackle.
- 38:58[SPEAKER_03]: think that that would be something that Todd Bates would absolutely love again to be able to like we said assuming health and the talent levels of David Stone and Jane Jackson might be something where you might get one year as those two be in the front line dominating duo then they might be on Sundays which is one of those like hate to see it but also love to see it type of things get anything working in behind where that be take care of some
- 39:21[SPEAKER_03]: Tank caring to disease me Trent Wilson Nigel Smith that would be huge and it feels like kind of the other big battle going on is not at starting corner as court and gillery and Eli Bowen will be Locking that down talk to court and yesterday he's always awesome and I think kind of an under talked about things which I guess is our fault is
- 39:38[SPEAKER_03]: I can't wait to see Eli Bowen not banged up to start the year because that's kind of been his path the last two years as missed the first couple of games look like a star that has no rust like a pros pro at corner but those two guys we know that Jacobi Johnson is going to be rotating in but it's very very interesting car system like the fourth corner back is it a
- 39:57[SPEAKER_03]: Transfer that wins that job is it may be a local product that we haven't thought about here for the last couple of years that could be coming on strong, but I think it's Brady Label that who's the fourth man not quite hope rolling in and spray paint and everything, but I think it's a very important thing that little more mortgage try to figure out right now.
- 40:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's into a degree, and I mean, you look at the two transfers coming in, printed geoman, Dakota fields, two very different backgrounds.
- 40:22[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you look at a guy like printed geoman, came from Mississippi Valley State, one of the consistently worst FCS programs.
- 40:29[SPEAKER_00]: But even despite that, he was really solid there, got some good starting experience.
- 40:34[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, it's a heck of a jump going from the swag to the SEC.
- 40:39[SPEAKER_00]: But definitely someone with some experience, meanwhile Dakota Field's coming from Oregon, former blue ship prospect had a huge expectations going in there.
- 40:48[SPEAKER_00]: Broke his leg and his first spring and Eugene.
- 40:51[SPEAKER_00]: Never saw the field as a true freshman.
- 40:53[SPEAKER_00]: Next year, you finally get into the mix, but loses his role by about game three or four.
- 40:58[SPEAKER_00]: Departs that program suddenly.
- 41:00[SPEAKER_00]: So a weird situation there, but I mean, obviously he has a lot of the intangibles
- 41:06[SPEAKER_00]: group got recruited by a school like Oregon.
- 41:09[SPEAKER_00]: So I think both of those guys bring some just interesting storylines.
- 41:13[SPEAKER_00]: I think Tristan Haynes is another option of he's been at OU for his entire short career at this point.
- 41:21[SPEAKER_00]: But just finding one or two of those guys to back up this really starts done a group I think is huge.
- 41:26[SPEAKER_00]: Like you said Ryan Gillerie Bowen, those are going to be the guys.
- 41:30[SPEAKER_00]: Jacobi Johnson, that's a guy you can feel really good about right behind those two, but finding at least one me two of those guys is huge and I would say if your brewer said that it's massive to just be ready for the moment on this deep and if you're ready you're going to play whether you're freshman, senior, whatever you may be.
- 41:49[SPEAKER_00]: So if multiple of those guys are quote ready in his mind, they could see the feel.
- 41:55[SPEAKER_03]: something to that you just go back to we talked to David Stone the first week of practice I think it was how kind of run together, but that was some of the David Stone noted right is like hey guys this secondary he looks around and goes they think by job easy even if I don't hit home they're they're going out there and making play so I'm excited to see the full product when it rolls out
- 42:15[SPEAKER_03]: and gets going on September 4th, really the other battle, which it's still a big battle going on.
- 42:20[SPEAKER_03]: I know it's not the sexiest thing to talk about, Ryan, but Grace and Miller and Jacob O'Rick, they are battling at punter.
- 42:26[SPEAKER_03]: It sounds like I wouldn't dare as a little late arriving, but at the open practice, it sounds like Jacob O'Rick not only boomed upon the impressed everybody, but boomed upon so high and far that preventable some self is stopping to be like,
- 42:39[SPEAKER_03]: Hello, yeah, brother in the middle of practice, which I don't imagine that Britt Minimal is tossing out a ton of positive affirmations to the kicker he's generally usually trying to put pressure on him and see if they how they perform, but that is something to a monitor that I don't know, we talked to Doug Deakin and it didn't sound like he really wanted to do like a two-punner situation.
- 42:59[SPEAKER_03]: He's like now if we get to it and one guy is just a lead at coffin corner in a short field then we can go back and put me in.
- 43:06[SPEAKER_03]: It sounds like I think for the most part he'd
- 43:09[SPEAKER_03]: up Hunter and get that thing going.
- 43:12[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, no doubt about it, but let's remember last year, Jacob Ulrich won the job initially and then Grace and Miller wound up being excellent once he sort of you know got Wallie Jacob Ulrich got Wallie piped a little bit when he was out.
- 43:29[SPEAKER_02]: Grayson Miller took that to job and ran with it.
- 43:32[SPEAKER_02]: So I think that's something that even if one of them wins it, it's still going to be nippin' talk.
- 43:38[SPEAKER_02]: We've seen both of them have excellent moments, whether it's in practice more for Ulrich and certainly in games with Grayson Miller, even with the rough into last year.
- 43:52[SPEAKER_02]: So that's certainly going to be something to watch.
- 43:54[SPEAKER_02]: And we'll see which one ultimately gets it,
- 43:58[SPEAKER_02]: I would imagine, like I said, even who wins it, that competition is still going to continue.
- 44:09[SPEAKER_03]: Keep it locked in all fall long into the season.
- 44:13[SPEAKER_03]: Oklahoma Sooner's on SI dot com.
- 44:15[SPEAKER_03]: Oklahoma Sooner's on SI dot com.
- 44:17[SPEAKER_03]: All of our ports, all of our conversations with the guys and the best part about it is it's all free no pay.
- 44:21[SPEAKER_03]: Well, just hit us up.
- 44:23[SPEAKER_03]: Oklahoma Sooner's on SI dot com.
- 44:25[SPEAKER_03]: Think the next time we'll be out there, I'll be Friday.
- 44:28[SPEAKER_03]: I believe as far as that goes not for like a practice viewing, but talking to everybody and fingers crossed.
- 44:33[SPEAKER_03]: Hopefully we could
- 44:34[SPEAKER_03]: get some no-a-best face-time or Caleb Needa or Trele Harris or Elijah Thomas.
- 44:39[SPEAKER_03]: We've been asking hopefully one day, they're all in back out there, but we've gotten a ton of guys topped about them.
- 44:44[SPEAKER_03]: The access has been great and we are thankful for all of that while everyone was
- 44:50[SPEAKER_03]: all over the place and waiting for the updates on Monday.
- 44:53[SPEAKER_03]: We did get one of our annual, like, I have the checklist that leads into the season and the things that you got.
- 44:59[SPEAKER_03]: We got to get through media day.
- 45:01[SPEAKER_03]: We got to get into watch list season.
- 45:03[SPEAKER_03]: Well, on Monday, we had the AP Top 25 drop now.
- 45:07[SPEAKER_03]: I think everyone knows the stats by now.
- 45:09[SPEAKER_03]: Inevitably one of these teams ranked in the top 10s.
- 45:11[SPEAKER_03]: Gonna be totally unranked, all that fun stuff.
- 45:13[SPEAKER_03]: But it is a little bit of a festival that gets us.
- 45:16[SPEAKER_03]: I call it week negative one here in college footballs.
- 45:19[SPEAKER_03]: We get two weeks zero.
- 45:20[SPEAKER_03]: The Sooners did check it.
- 45:21[SPEAKER_03]: They were nine in the coaches poll.
- 45:24[SPEAKER_03]: 10 in the AP poll in John.
- 45:26[SPEAKER_03]: I know that Paul Feinbaum was quick to point this out that the strength of schedule, at least for the preseason for the Sooners.
- 45:34[SPEAKER_03]: You like tough games.
- 45:35[SPEAKER_03]: Number three, Georgia.
- 45:36[SPEAKER_03]: Number five, Texas, 8 and 8, Ole Miss 9.
- 45:40[SPEAKER_03]: Got to scroll down just slightly to Michigan.
- 45:42[SPEAKER_03]: Number 16, Missouri is in there just like placeholder spot at number 25.
- 45:47[SPEAKER_03]: Even if you expand it out to
- 45:50[SPEAKER_03]: Florida would have technically been 27th if you do it that way.
- 45:54[SPEAKER_03]: South Carolina receiving votes, do Mexico is basically if you're auto-climbing schedule and you're not named Utah, you probably were in the mix with some sort of love here in the preseason top 25.
- 46:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, how about the fine bomb, though, man?
- 46:06[SPEAKER_01]: What an enigma of a personality he is.
- 46:09[SPEAKER_01]: He's got an immense army of followers.
- 46:14[SPEAKER_01]: And yet, anytime somebody, he opens his mouth about any schools, but particularly in the SEC, you hear people come out of the woodwork telling him how stupid he is and how much they hate him.
- 46:24[SPEAKER_01]: And he's such a homer and everybody, nobody respects him.
- 46:27[SPEAKER_01]: and yet the guy's got millions of followers so it's like which which is it are you like that are you like how it's turned the how it's turned of us of a college football talk you just want to be a shock jack and say thanks to tick people off because he's he's right about half the time he's he's not a wizard you know he's not dabbling in the dark arts to to divine the future he's he's good at what he does and i think the best he's the best at what he
- 46:57[SPEAKER_01]: And he looks at the Oklahoma schedule and sees the three tough games and says, hey, that's three tough games.
- 47:03[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know that they can survive there.
- 47:04[SPEAKER_01]: I don't see how they finish in the top 10.
- 47:07[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that's like chum in the water for Oklahoma fans, man.
- 47:12[SPEAKER_03]: I do, if I were at Hogwarts, I would not have wanted Paul Feinbaum as my defense against the Dark Arts.
- 47:17[SPEAKER_03]: Seacher would not have felt very safe there, but he would have done a great professor at Umbridge as far as doing the bidding of everybody in the front office.
- 47:26[SPEAKER_03]: Of course, you have to respect, though, the way that he's like, you know, I hung out with all the old Coleman people.
- 47:30[SPEAKER_03]: It does to see media day.
- 47:31[SPEAKER_03]: I really like Chama's here.
- 47:32[SPEAKER_03]: That's all great.
- 47:33[SPEAKER_03]: BAH!
- 47:34[SPEAKER_03]: Schedule.
- 47:35[SPEAKER_03]: Schedule.
- 47:35[SPEAKER_03]: Schedule.
- 47:36[SPEAKER_03]: I'll all this to say, it's a historic preseason tap 25 for Oklahoma as far as opponents.
- 47:40[SPEAKER_03]: It's nothing new.
- 47:41[SPEAKER_03]: It's just another.
- 47:42[SPEAKER_03]: If you want to put it as a quantifiable match.
- 47:44[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, we haven't talked about the schedules in January.
- 47:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no, it's, I think it's fair to have the opinion that Paul Feinbaum has just based on the number of quality opponents and not just talking about those four teams in the top 10, it is a gauntlet, I know that we've kind of made that phrase a little bit cliche with how much at least I've said it, but it is a really tough schedule.
- 48:18[SPEAKER_00]: If they don't, though, and teams like Georgia, Texas, Ole Miss, A&M, or as good as they might be just based on what people are saying about them, yeah, it could be just this team could be really good and not have an amazing record and could be somewhere high teens of O20s.
- 48:48[SPEAKER_03]: I just think it's funny Ryan.
- 48:49[SPEAKER_03]: It's this, I feel like it's the same conversation we've had since that CC media day, when you get into this of like A&M, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, LSU, Alabama, feels like that's like the next block of teams in the SEC and however you want to order it, however I want to order it, however whoever wants to order it, based off.
- 49:06[SPEAKER_03]: mainly how you feel about the quarterbacks coming back in that group like I'm not going to be matter like yell at you now in the top 25 tech slid in there at 12 in front of Alabama that was like the the add-in to this conversation but it just kind of feels like that's kind of how it has been and it's like hey this block we feel like they're pretty good we'll toss up there but I am going to put you on the spot here as we know every year inevitably one of these teams in the top 10 finishes
- 49:33[SPEAKER_03]: Your choices are number one Ohio State, number two Oregon, number three Georgia, Notre Dame at four, the sneaking suspicion, able will not be voting Notre Dame.
- 49:40[SPEAKER_03]: Texas at five, Indiana six, Miami seven, A&M eight, Ole Miss nine, Oklahoma 10.
- 49:46[SPEAKER_03]: One must go, one is gonna suck, who, who?
- 49:50[SPEAKER_02]: I would probably go with one of the Texas schools, but I'm going to go Texas A&M.
- 49:56[SPEAKER_02]: They just haven't, it just seems like they're on the cusp all the time and they make a jump and then they take a little step back.
- 50:06[SPEAKER_02]: and I can't quite capture that momentum and I just think that one of those teams has a chance to do it and I think the Aggies are gonna be the one that stumbles out of that group.
- 50:19[SPEAKER_02]: There are a couple of interesting possibilities there, but yeah, I won't pick Notre Dame there.
- 50:27[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, even though obviously not having the Jeremiah love is a big loss, but uh, I think they're going to hang in there and spit their schedule and be, uh, you know, have a chance to contend for the playoff, but uh, let's go the Aggies.
- 50:43[SPEAKER_01]: I think there's an easy answer to this one, Ryan.
- 50:45[SPEAKER_01]: Look back at the last 25 years of college football.
- 50:50[SPEAKER_01]: which of those teams always starts in the top 10 and seldom finishes in the top 10.
- 50:56[SPEAKER_01]: It's Notre Dame, it's Texas, it's Texas A&M.
- 51:00[SPEAKER_01]: Take your pick, I mean blind draw, or could it be the rebuilding channel champion Indiana Hoosiers?
- 51:09[SPEAKER_03]: I like it of the schools that you look at especially in the SEC like not all these teams can be awesome Someone's gonna be the one that probably loses a couple of these gifts.
- 51:17[SPEAKER_03]: I really like a name schedule this year I don't really hate what they've got go on the one I look at and this is what I don't know what to do with it is I love Trinidad Chambles and I don't think that Pete Golding's gonna be like this tire fire anything But you look at the Ole Miss schedule and if there's one that could get out of hand quick if things don't start going your direction
- 51:38[SPEAKER_03]: All of the attention is going to be played or paid to that LSU game, but the week after that, if Florida can avoid disaster against Auburn and a battle of first year coaches, suddenly Ole Miss is going to have all of the emotion of that game and have to turn around and potentially go to a swamp Carson that could be pretty fired up if they win that first kind of like testing against Auburn, and then that does even talk about some of the business
- 52:07[SPEAKER_03]: I really like Chandler's, I think he's a best quarterback in the SEC, so it's hard for me to vote against the best quarterback that I think, but you look at it and if I'm just going to schedule it, it has some disaster potential, I feel like Ole Miss could maybe get away from him if they're not able to come out and be really, really sharp early.
- 52:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think outside of Miami, Ohio State Georgia, there's an argument that all of those teams can suffer that fate.
- 52:31[SPEAKER_00]: But I mean, I will agree with Aver and Hove in the sense that any time A&M has expectations, it usually doesn't go well.
- 52:39[SPEAKER_00]: It's usually their best seasons are when they're in the teens, the lower 20s.
- 52:43[SPEAKER_00]: That doesn't set themselves up well, but you look at that offensive line.
- 52:47[SPEAKER_00]: That's the biggest question mark.
- 52:49[SPEAKER_00]: If they have a good line, I think that will be a good team.
- 52:51[SPEAKER_00]: Ole Miss, I mean, they have the star power.
- 52:53[SPEAKER_00]: That's a team that I think is a fair answer for it though, just looking at their defense.
- 52:57[SPEAKER_00]: What is that going to be?
- 52:58[SPEAKER_00]: I know that's a side of the ball that lost a lot of talent to LSU, other places.
- 53:04[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that it was a quote last year, even with how good Ole Miss was made it to the
- 53:10[SPEAKER_00]: the defense was very spotty, wasn't fantastic.
- 53:13[SPEAKER_00]: Now losing a lot of pieces from that new head coach, I think there is definitely an argument for aggression there.
- 53:20[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, there's certainly the Texas argument seeing that on paper.
- 53:23[SPEAKER_00]: They were supposed to be so amazing last here and they just
- 53:26[SPEAKER_00]: They won their big games, the B&O UNAM, but outside of that over time against Mississippi State, Kentucky, losing to Florida, really struggled in a lot of those games that shouldn't have been hard.
- 53:36[SPEAKER_00]: I think Indiana is an option John Hoover or Josh Hoover excuse me.
- 53:41[SPEAKER_00]: Can be really good, but definitely can be turnover happy when he gets pressure and big moments.
- 53:47[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's a team that could progress this year.
- 53:50[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe I'm going to open up a downer on each of these teams.
- 53:52[SPEAKER_00]: I think largely the APM voters did a pretty good job.
- 53:56[SPEAKER_00]: That's maybe not in that specific order of the top 10 teams that I'd probably have.
- 54:02[SPEAKER_00]: But there's going to be regressions and probably ones that we don't even expect.
- 54:07[SPEAKER_03]: You look at it and everyone they have to see has their tough stretch.
- 54:10[SPEAKER_03]: Do you guys know what Ole Miss is into October, into November, it looks like?
- 54:14[SPEAKER_03]: Because they had two Texas on the 24th.
- 54:17[SPEAKER_03]: They've got Georgia coming into Oxford on November 7th.
- 54:21[SPEAKER_03]: Sandwiched between that, now it's in Mississippi, not on the plains, but Auburn coming in in a sandwich spot between Texas and Georgia.
- 54:31[SPEAKER_03]: Giving Alex Golish a little bit of time to maybe get things underway as opposed to like a week three or week four match up and then oh, by the way, you had to Oklahoma immediately after the Georgia game like that that's a spot where I just I wonder it could go really well, but that might be where someone might spiral and then as I've been told by the finance media on Twitter, the Nike stock is plummeting.
- 54:51[SPEAKER_03]: So maybe it's now or never for Oregon.
- 54:54[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.
- 54:54[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not in on the.
- 54:56[SPEAKER_03]: Not smart enough to wrap my head around college football most of the time.
- 54:59[SPEAKER_03]: Much let's just stock market.
- 55:00[SPEAKER_03]: But we'll see, always have a ton of fun with the AP poll.
- 55:04[SPEAKER_03]: There, finally, let's in here, guys.
- 55:07[SPEAKER_03]: You have the fine bomb on one end of things.
- 55:10[SPEAKER_03]: Hammering, oh, you schedule, all that stuff.
- 55:12[SPEAKER_03]: I did find, I don't know if you guys caught this Todd McShaze comments.
- 55:15[SPEAKER_03]: He headed on to, I think it was Brandon Walker, cost football show and Brandon Walker, we're not going to talk about Brandon Walker.
- 55:23[SPEAKER_03]: I agree with all of you fans, but it's been a weird place of he's like somewhat rosy on the suit.
- 55:27[SPEAKER_03]: He was asking McShay about Oklahoma and McShay's a guy that I really enjoy like when you get to the NFL draft season, but he's some of that obviously is talking to scouts and scouting departments all across the country and
- 55:41[SPEAKER_03]: I know that he worked with Jim naggy very, very early on in their career back in 99.
- 55:45[SPEAKER_03]: So he's like, got that relationship there.
- 55:47[SPEAKER_03]: But any time you come out and basically throw it in North Carolina space that Michael and Barney and Bill Bell checks said they're going to be the 33rd NFL team, but it's Oklahoma's front office set up that everyone's chasing and it.
- 55:58[SPEAKER_03]: It's great for us, and Jim and I use great with us, it's great that when you're up close, I think everyone thinks they're front offices rock and roll, but I do think it's notable who when you have one of the guys that's kind of on the outside and looks at it from the NFL lens that dips in and is like, no, no, no, no, like when Jim and Iki laid out the visual of Brent Vittables laid out the vision when he was hired two Feduaries to go or into March technically announced and February signed on in March.
- 56:24[SPEAKER_03]: It's a spot where you go, this is great in
- 56:28[SPEAKER_03]: This looks good on paper, but it sounds like it's something that has been wildly successful.
- 56:32[SPEAKER_03]: We obviously have seen it with seemed like how seamless the portal window went, last off season plus now that he's had some time to get his teeth into the recruiting side of things.
- 56:41[SPEAKER_03]: As well, it seems like everything's moving in the right direction and that everything is still pretty, uh, cum by odd and copesthetic with everybody in the front office.
- 56:50[SPEAKER_01]: So take you back two years, two and a half years, uh, hey, uh, Brent, uh, we're going to,
- 56:58[SPEAKER_01]: go with in a different direction with the general manager.
- 57:01[SPEAKER_01]: Job, we're going to expand things.
- 57:04[SPEAKER_01]: Does anybody know who we could hire?
- 57:08[SPEAKER_01]: This is a joke, particularly on talking with Brent, or maybe it's Randall Stevenson talking with Brent.
- 57:16[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't know where the recommendation came from, but put yourself in their shoes, who the heck is going to go hire the executive
- 57:28[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, sure, he's got a history background in the NFL front office work, but for him to, for that higher to be made at that point in time, and for him to have the extensive, what a decade of reaching out touching-based coaches.
- 57:49[SPEAKER_01]: understanding how the business of college football used to work and is evolving into how it's going to work in the future.
- 57:56[SPEAKER_01]: He is a unique understanding of that.
- 57:59[SPEAKER_01]: And for him to basically they give him a blank check and said, hire as many guys as you need to do this job correctly, appropriately.
- 58:08[SPEAKER_01]: And they've done that.
- 58:10[SPEAKER_01]: And again, shout out to Randall Stevenson or Brandon, whoever it was that said, hey, this guy in Mobile,
- 58:16[SPEAKER_01]: I know he's just the executive director of this little all-star game that we put on every year, but he knows this stuff.
- 58:23[SPEAKER_01]: That was an impressive hire.
- 58:24[SPEAKER_01]: That was an extremely impressive hire because for McShay now to be coming out and saying that this is the model that other schools need to follow.
- 58:32[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that just tells you right there what's kind of mind for football, the Jim Negi House, and maybe what kind of eye for talent, the hiring situation, how that I'll shook out to bring him to Norman Oklahoma, very impressive all around.
- 58:49[SPEAKER_03]: And Ryan, I think that Brent deserves a ton of credit in his conversation as well because it's one thing for whether it's top-down or you're pushing for, it's one thing to come and say, yeah, this is great, this sounds great on paper, but to actually work through it, and I know that Brent's been asked about a couple different times, you go all the way back to the start of fall camp where
- 59:10[SPEAKER_03]: On one hand, it's still the same.
- 59:12[SPEAKER_03]: Like, it's not like Oklahoma's coaching staff, whether that be from Brent Venables down to Miguel Shave.
- 59:16[SPEAKER_03]: It's all, all those guys, like Miguel Shave is still watching the cut-up to the defensive ends that they want to recruit.
- 59:21[SPEAKER_03]: Things like that.
- 59:21[SPEAKER_03]: Maybe naggy and his team are helping focus it down, so you just have to spend all that time scaring.
- 59:27[SPEAKER_03]: But I mean, to have the buy-in from the entire coaching staff top to bottom and for Brent Venables, who's been a lifer in college football under
- 59:37[SPEAKER_03]: Snyder Dabo Stoops, like it's a who's who of Hall of Famers that he has to lean on to be proactive and willing to not follow everybody and say we're going to kind of step out and do a slightly different model.
- 59:51[SPEAKER_03]: To make that all work and get this going in the right direction, I think too is really, really impressive.
- 59:56[SPEAKER_03]: So I know that Brett says that it calls for both the savings.
- 59:59[SPEAKER_03]: It's always been, but it's not.
- 1:00:00[SPEAKER_03]: You know, and to come in and embrace that change,
- 1:00:04[SPEAKER_03]: I think it's just as much a credit to him as it is to all the great work that everybody around the program is doing.
- 1:00:10[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:00:11[SPEAKER_02]: It wouldn't work if not only Brent Venibals wasn't on board, but all the assistance.
- 1:00:17[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, heck, we talked to Miguel Chavis, who you mentioned a couple weeks ago, and he talked about how recruiting is in some ways fundamentally the same, but having Jim Nagy and his staff is allowed him to really narrow in and focus his time on building the relationships and all the things
- 1:00:39[SPEAKER_02]: typically has been.
- 1:00:40[SPEAKER_02]: So I think it's insulated them a little bit from what college football is now because Jim Nagin, his staff, handled a lot of the negotiations and things like that.
- 1:00:52[SPEAKER_02]: The contract worked that Brent Venables has said isn't his thing and it's allowed Brent Venables and in a lot of his staff, but especially Brent Venables to focus in on the things that he's really good at,
- 1:01:08[SPEAKER_02]: and a relationship building and it's paid off to this point and it's paid off because they found the perfect person.
- 1:01:16[SPEAKER_02]: I think in Jim naggy there are some of us who maybe were wondering, hey, like who sort of alluded to, he's the director of the senior bowl.
- 1:01:27[SPEAKER_02]: How much is he really doing?
- 1:01:29[SPEAKER_02]: But I think
- 1:01:31[SPEAKER_02]: That game's importance for the NFL and the lead up to it and everything that goes into it.
- 1:01:38[SPEAKER_02]: I think is something that Randall Stephenson and Joe Staglio certainly saw and saw the vision of what this thing could become and now we see the fruits of that.
- 1:01:51[SPEAKER_02]: here a couple of years later, it seems to be paying off and I think there will be plenty of more copycats to come out of this success that this model has shown.
- 1:02:03[SPEAKER_03]: And Ryan, I don't want to like over-inflate just one example of things like that.
- 1:02:07[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not saying this is all on Jim Nack, but you talk to Bill Beanbow right at Media Day.
- 1:02:11[SPEAKER_03]: And I think that for a lot of coaches, there was this, I'm having to adjust to modern recruiting
- 1:02:20[SPEAKER_03]: Then NIL comes along and it's this tug and pull of how do I evolve again?
- 1:02:25[SPEAKER_03]: Well, it sounds like Bill Beanbow has been the best of, um, thank goodness.
- 1:02:30[SPEAKER_03]: I can drop all these guys at Jim Nagy's office.
- 1:02:32[SPEAKER_03]: I'm just going to tell them I'm going to coach your horror and I just get to be Bill Beanbow.
- 1:02:36[SPEAKER_03]: And I think that that is maybe, I don't know if sigh of relief is that it's like, I think Bill could have happily done all of it and like he landed for Susie before.
- 1:02:44[SPEAKER_03]: But it's a, it's a,
- 1:02:45[SPEAKER_03]: I think that for guys like Bill Beanbow especially just letting Bill Beanbow be Bill Beanbow is the best thing for your program and if it unleashes all these guys be able to do that then that's a huge win in itself as well.
- 1:02:57[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, no doubt about it.
- 1:02:58[SPEAKER_02]: And one of the things with this is that, hey, Jim naggy can narrow down on guys who sort of fit into Bill Beatinbo's philosophy of things, not only with the scheme, but also just the personality, because it certainly takes a unique personality to play.
- 1:03:18[SPEAKER_02]: four bill beat and bow and he's able to uh it's set it is it's freedom up to be the coach that he always has been and he said he changed things I wrote about this a couple of weeks ago that he changed his coaching style a little bit uh once NIL started but the last couple of years he's been able to go back to that and uh a part of that is because of OU's uh front office system guys on you talk about media that I talked to I don't know four or five OU coaches about this
- 1:03:48[SPEAKER_01]: later on.
- 1:03:49[SPEAKER_01]: They are so relieved to be rid of the contract negotiations and the agents coming in on visits and the parents coming in with their hand out.
- 1:03:59[SPEAKER_01]: The coaches are so relieved to have that duty relief taken off their shoulders and now they can just coach again.
- 1:04:07[SPEAKER_01]: You talk to a lot of coaches and they're like, oh yeah, it didn't bother me too much, you know, but that's the politically correct way of saying, hey man, whatever they want me to
- 1:04:17[SPEAKER_01]: but the fact of the matter is these guys love coach and football.
- 1:04:20[SPEAKER_01]: I'll take you back to 2021 when all this and I all stuff got rolling and his quarterback was the guy that was the tip of the spear on an IL.
- 1:04:28[SPEAKER_01]: Lincoln rightly when I asked him how do you kind of you know I guess the juggle all this stuff coming at you all.
- 1:04:37[SPEAKER_01]: All these things that you'd never had to that you've never had to do before you know negotiating and meeting agents and things like that and he flat out said this back in 2021 he's flat out said.
- 1:04:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, this is not something that we got into coaching for.
- 1:04:51[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't get into coaching to negotiate contracts with high school players.
- 1:04:55[SPEAKER_01]: So it's been heading this way for more than five years now.
- 1:05:01[SPEAKER_01]: And here we are.
- 1:05:02[SPEAKER_01]: And general managers have taken that weight the shoulders of the coach, not just the head coach, but the coaching staff is in general identifying, finding, researching, unearthing, and developing
- 1:05:17[SPEAKER_01]: They're in charge now of the relationship part, which Miguel Chavis and Todd Bates are aces at building relationships, and really all the OU coaches are that I've met.
- 1:05:30[SPEAKER_01]: Brandon Hall was another one who was really excited about, you know, hey coaching college players is totally different than recruiting, negotiating,
- 1:05:41[SPEAKER_01]: You know, going back and forth with them and they're talking to some other school, they don't want to do that.
- 1:05:46[SPEAKER_01]: They want to coach.
- 1:05:47[SPEAKER_01]: So that's what this general manager stuff has done and the front office stuff, personnel department has been a real relief for the coaches.
- 1:05:55[SPEAKER_03]: And then Carson not to Barry, another one of the tidbits from McCshae, but another thing of much like the front office model, great when we're talking about it, but someone else that's outside the bubbles, stops it, and kind of reinforces that.
- 1:06:08[SPEAKER_03]: He also had some dark horse heisman buzz for like a guy like geometry, and he was talking, stop me if you've heard this before Carson, down to Manning Passy Academy, talked about the mechanics that look a lot better.
- 1:06:20[SPEAKER_03]: through seven qualifiers on of we got to see these mechanics hold up in the line of fire, but it was one of those guys that he said this could be the guy that's not really your radar that suddenly we look up at November.
- 1:06:30[SPEAKER_03]: The only thing with that is that, Jon Mitcher has been in that path before, he was kind of one of the, you know, stars of September and then the hand injury happened, but again, not just us and not just Jon Mitcher talking about the difference that could make for Oklahoma's quarterback heading to 286.
- 1:06:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think a lot of us just myself included need to see it before we believe it.
- 1:06:53[SPEAKER_00]: You looked better, more composed in the spring game.
- 1:06:56[SPEAKER_00]: He's looked solid in some of the practices we've seen.
- 1:06:59[SPEAKER_00]: But just based on last year, it was very boomer bossed, obviously more of the boomer, and the season more of the bustle later, and the season...
- 1:07:06[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but Apple health and his best game he can be one of the best quarterbacks in the nation, but that is worse.
- 1:07:12[SPEAKER_00]: He can really take his team out of games.
- 1:07:14[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's, that's how a lot of quarterbacks in this SECR, whether that's Byron Brown, Sam Levit, Marcel Reed, Hack even Arch Manning who's getting all of this buzz for he's the front runner this that we've seen him in his worst.
- 1:07:28[SPEAKER_00]: We've seen him in his best two very different types of quarterbacks.
- 1:07:31[SPEAKER_00]: So I mean,
- 1:07:33[SPEAKER_00]: If I was a betting man, I had to put money on John Mitch.
- 1:07:36[SPEAKER_00]: When the high has been, I'm not sure.
- 1:07:37[SPEAKER_00]: I do that.
- 1:07:38[SPEAKER_00]: I think there are just still a lot of things that he needs to clean up.
- 1:07:42[SPEAKER_00]: The mechanics certainly look better in the videos that we've seen from when we've gotten to see him.
- 1:07:47[SPEAKER_00]: But there is a lot to clean up and I think he needs a lot to help just in terms of.
- 1:07:51[SPEAKER_00]: The blocking has to be better.
- 1:07:52[SPEAKER_00]: It's a step forward last year, but it has to be better.
- 1:07:55[SPEAKER_00]: There has to be more than just Isaiah satania on the outside with those big catches that he gets because of his speed.
- 1:08:02[SPEAKER_00]: So if they can, if those things can be achieved, it's certainly a conversation, maybe we do see his name in there.
- 1:08:08[SPEAKER_00]: But I think I need to see a little bit of a little bit of him against a team where he gets a different jersey before I buy into the hype.
- 1:08:16[SPEAKER_03]: I think that's totally understandable as we've talked about to decision making a huge part that would be really hard to grade when you're just looking at in the noncontact jersey.
- 1:08:23[SPEAKER_03]: I will put this in everyone's radar though.
- 1:08:25[SPEAKER_03]: A man that is on Oklahoma schedule this year that appears to have decision making figured out this is a report from not a report.
- 1:08:33[SPEAKER_03]: A story from hail McGranahan who covers South Carolina for 24.7 sports.
- 1:08:39[SPEAKER_03]: And I quote, Lenore Sellers, who graduates in December, does have any classes only in internship at a local driving range.
- 1:08:44[SPEAKER_03]: Sounds like decisions making top tier for the QB1 in South Carolina.
- 1:08:51[SPEAKER_03]: If you can go, uh, no classes are just the online classes, or something like Dilly Gabriel and Drake students benefited from there.
- 1:08:57[SPEAKER_03]: Friday or Oklahoma, and you can add in the internship at a local driving range for your quarterback.
- 1:09:02[SPEAKER_03]: That is the kind of decision maker I look behind my offensive line, and we'll see if that helps little our sellers be chill and calm and composed this year.
- 1:09:11[SPEAKER_01]: Not during this heat wave, I don't want to enter in a no golf course or driving range or nothing man.
- 1:09:16[SPEAKER_01]: We had a guy when I was in college, our best player, he had a summer job.
- 1:09:20[SPEAKER_01]: His summer job was keeping snakes off the baseball field and football field.
- 1:09:25[SPEAKER_01]: We had no snakes on the baseball field or football field.
- 1:09:27[SPEAKER_01]: He just showed up and looked at the field and they gave him 20 bucks or 50 bucks or whatever it was.
- 1:09:33[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, maybe this driving range is one of the ones with air-ishened or as fans on the base and things like that.
- 1:09:40[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe it's like a tough, top golf like situation where you're, you know, kept pretty comfortable on days like this when it's so miserable outside.
- 1:09:50[SPEAKER_03]: I was wondering if he was driving the the golf ball buggy at top golf where I was like hey Lunor sells and there nobody aim at this bad boy.
- 1:09:57[SPEAKER_03]: That'll get top of the course.
- 1:09:58[SPEAKER_03]: If you can have one job or be forced at one job and I'm taking the pro off the table.
- 1:10:03[SPEAKER_03]: You can't be the pro.
- 1:10:04[SPEAKER_03]: You're working at your local course.
- 1:10:06[SPEAKER_03]: What's the job that you're probably going to clock in with?
- 1:10:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's a good question.
- 1:10:14[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe, I mean, if I have the skills for maybe a groundskeeper, just being outdoors, making sure the greens are in good shape, the bunkers are well maintained, I have zero experience in that.
- 1:10:25[SPEAKER_00]: So if I ever pivoted from journalism, it wouldn't be in a golf course management, but I think that would actually be a pretty fun job just being out of the beautiful place.
- 1:10:34[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I don't think that's my calling.
- 1:10:38[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, we can study Caddy Shack for the do's and don't sit in that line of Ford.
- 1:10:41[SPEAKER_03]: For me, I'm probably just like you can find me at the 19th hole.
- 1:10:44[SPEAKER_03]: I'll just bartend in there and just I'll do that.
- 1:10:46[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not a great bartender.
- 1:10:48[SPEAKER_03]: I would learn fast though to make that thing happen.
- 1:10:50[SPEAKER_03]: All right.
- 1:10:51[SPEAKER_03]: We're in the off season.
- 1:10:52[SPEAKER_03]: We're wrapping it up next week.
- 1:10:53[SPEAKER_03]: It'll be week zero, which means the world famous coast to coast.
- 1:11:00[SPEAKER_03]: Always bankable in totally accurate Sooner's on SI college football preview.
- 1:11:06[SPEAKER_03]: We've never gotten conference champions wrong.
- 1:11:08[SPEAKER_03]: We've never gotten group of five representatives in the CFP wrong.
- 1:11:11[SPEAKER_03]: We sure have never had our picked win the ACC go down in week zero because Sam Howell forgot how to play football.
- 1:11:18[SPEAKER_03]: That's never happened.
- 1:11:19[SPEAKER_03]: Certainly not.
- 1:11:20[SPEAKER_03]: on this show, but we will have the full previews as well as all the news and notes as we'll come a wraps up fall camp and gets into their week zero game prep for their opener on September 4th against UTEP the Friday night of the opening weekend of the full slate of college football season.
- 1:11:38[SPEAKER_03]: Big thanks as always to Abraham Carson and of who
- 1:11:41[SPEAKER_03]: for dealing with me.
- 1:11:42[SPEAKER_03]: We will talk to you guys next Wednesday here on the suitors on a side pot.
- 1:11:45[SPEAKER_03]: As always, open the suitors on a side dot com.
- 1:11:48[SPEAKER_03]: That's the website and head over there and everything's free.
- 1:11:50[SPEAKER_03]: Great content flowing all throughout fall can't.
- 1:11:52[SPEAKER_03]: But as far as the pot goes, we'll talk to you guys next week.
