- 0:16Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome everybody to episode one oh one of
- 0:19Speaker 1: Cards and Categories. I'm Mike Coolard from ras Ball, joined
- 0:22Speaker 1: as always by my very good friend Jeremy Burr, also
- 0:25Speaker 1: from assball. Have you been traded yet for a reliever
- 0:29Speaker 1: or have you checked?
- 0:31Speaker 2: I think I sit firmly in player to be named later,
- 0:33Speaker 2: status otherwise or cash considerations, negatives considerations, Absolutely, but not yet.
- 0:43Speaker 2: The stove is hot, hot, hot, And to your point,
- 0:47Speaker 2: it's all relieving relievers off the board right now. I'm
- 0:52Speaker 2: pretty sure Ryan McMahon is gonna start pitching at some
- 0:54Speaker 2: point with what's going on, because there's not many position
- 0:57Speaker 2: players moving, but there's plenty of relievers moving. And I
- 1:00Speaker 2: think in the last hour there's been at least two
- 1:03Speaker 2: closers that have changed teams, and so there's a lot happening.
- 1:08Speaker 2: The day before the deadline. We are recording on July thirtieth.
- 1:12Speaker 2: When's the July thirtieth, And we weren't sure how much
- 1:15Speaker 2: trade talk we'd.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Have, and I think we got enough. I think we
- 1:18Speaker 3: got plenty.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean we thought we would only be maybe
- 1:21Speaker 1: talking about rumors, but we've gotten I haven't even counted
- 1:24Speaker 1: how many reliever trades have gone down today because it's
- 1:27Speaker 1: gotten a little out of hand, and it's almost gotten
- 1:29Speaker 1: to the point too where some of these situations it's
- 1:32Speaker 1: almost impossible to evaluate because you have like Johan Duran
- 1:37Speaker 1: going to the Phillies who had just signed David Robertson
- 1:41Speaker 1: got Helsley going to the Mets, and then you've also
- 1:44Speaker 1: got the backfill where as we kind of speak here,
- 1:47Speaker 1: as you said on the thirty first or on the thirtieth,
- 1:50Speaker 1: this will drop on the thirty first, so this will
- 1:52Speaker 1: totally be irrelevant probably by the time we rolled out.
- 1:55Speaker 1: We'll try to make it as ever green as possible,
- 1:57Speaker 1: but it's gonna be tough. But the backfilling in Saint
- 1:59Speaker 1: Louis some Minnesota is going to get fascinating because you
- 2:02Speaker 1: don't even know like how far they're going to dig
- 2:05Speaker 1: into that bullpen and keep dealing folks out. So it
- 2:08Speaker 1: should be a fun weekend in terms of fab writing.
- 2:12Speaker 1: You can check out my waiver wire piece on Saturday
- 2:15Speaker 1: well where everything will have finally settled, so I'll be
- 2:18Speaker 1: able to help you out weigh those waters. But also
- 2:21Speaker 1: make sure when you're on ras ball check out those
- 2:23Speaker 1: subscriptions to try to help you win down the stretch,
- 2:26Speaker 1: because this is the time to start picking up players
- 2:29Speaker 1: on the stream mater, the hit a tron, going for
- 2:31Speaker 1: daily pickups, going for daily moves, finding every little edge
- 2:35Speaker 1: piece of value that you can down the stretch, especially
- 2:37Speaker 1: as folks kind of shade into fantasy football mindsets, you
- 2:41Speaker 1: can pick up a lot of value just if your
- 2:44Speaker 1: the rest of your league mates aren't paying as much attention.
- 2:47Speaker 1: So it's primetime in fantasy baseball land. We've got a
- 2:51Speaker 1: ton of stuff to cover this week. So let's just
- 2:54Speaker 1: kind of start from the top with really the one
- 2:58Speaker 1: piece of you said there's lots relievers moving, but one
- 3:01Speaker 1: that's not going to be moving is Emmaanuel Class from
- 3:03Speaker 1: the Cleveland Guardians, who has been placed on administrative leave
- 3:07Speaker 1: for sports betting investigation that has also previously ensnared Luis
- 3:12Speaker 1: l or Tez. There and have you seen videos of
- 3:16Speaker 1: some of the pitches that people have kind of found
- 3:19Speaker 1: in terms of jomboy style like digging through They're not
- 3:24Speaker 1: great because if you recall from the Ortz investigation, what
- 3:28Speaker 1: really snagged him was first pitches of innings and where
- 3:33Speaker 1: you can bet whether or not that is a ball
- 3:34Speaker 1: or a strike, and some of these Class A ones
- 3:37Speaker 1: where he's like taking over the ninth, they're like spiked
- 3:40Speaker 1: five feet in front of him. They're way outside, and
- 3:43Speaker 1: if you're a role class closer, he's never also like
- 3:46Speaker 1: looking down and being like, what's wrong with my grip?
- 3:48Speaker 1: You know, it's kind of been like, ohh whatever. You
- 3:51Speaker 1: can see the catcher is just totally thrown off his games.
- 3:54Speaker 1: So it's also fascinating. This has happened twice now in Cleveland,
- 3:58Speaker 1: so it's not I think coincidental that you want almost
- 4:03Speaker 1: wonder if they were working in conjunction with whoever they're
- 4:05Speaker 1: working with. Obviously, this is all a lot of speculation
- 4:08Speaker 1: as MLB does their investigation over Class A and orties.
- 4:12Speaker 1: I think I also maybe want to mention though, don't
- 4:14Speaker 1: forget Meno Class A got popped for peds, So not
- 4:17Speaker 1: exactly like the most stallwart person maybe in terms of
- 4:23Speaker 1: not going against MLB rules. So is this something that
- 4:27Speaker 1: maybe you're starting to look out for for more of
- 4:29Speaker 1: these pictures pictures in terms of like or do you
- 4:33Speaker 1: think that maybe MLB these couple of crackdowns will really
- 4:36Speaker 1: really force all the players to get their stuff together
- 4:40Speaker 1: and not kind of go up against these gambling sites
- 4:46Speaker 1: and kind of try to play with them, and maybe
- 4:48Speaker 1: just thoughts in general about gambling and its effect here
- 4:51Speaker 1: on baseball.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, it's.
- 4:55Speaker 2: It's it's concerning, but it's isolated, and in my opinion,
- 4:59Speaker 2: like when we don't really know what truly is taking place,
- 5:02Speaker 2: maybe it's just all coincidental. Maybe there's no nothing actually
- 5:05Speaker 2: taking place here. That's why the administrative leave. But it
- 5:09Speaker 2: is an unfortunate class. A is a world class closer
- 5:14Speaker 2: less this year than he has was last year from
- 5:16Speaker 2: world class perspective, but it's absolutely terrible for Cleveland. He
- 5:20Speaker 2: was probably trying to trade him and looking at some
- 5:22Speaker 2: of the returns that folks are getting for these these closers,
- 5:25Speaker 2: probably would have loved to capitalize on that. But so
- 5:30Speaker 2: I look at relatively as an isolated incident. I did, however,
- 5:33Speaker 2: find it very interesting that, you know, Cleveland is sponsored
- 5:38Speaker 2: by bet three sixty or three sixty five I think
- 5:40Speaker 2: it is, and that logo mysteriously disappeared from some broadcasts
- 5:43Speaker 2: pretty pretty shortly up thereafter. So at least they're thinking
- 5:48Speaker 2: through things there. But maybe it teaches them one or
- 5:50Speaker 2: two things about advertising sports betting well, cracking down on
- 5:56Speaker 2: players sports betting. If it's truly sports betting on your
- 5:59Speaker 2: own performance, that's a much bigger deal than any other
- 6:04Speaker 2: scenario that's, you know, not necessarily a Pete Rose type
- 6:08Speaker 2: scenario where you just bet on everything. So it'll be
- 6:13Speaker 2: interesting to see how our things are treated at this point.
- 6:15Speaker 2: I think you have to pretty much write Class A off. Unfortunately,
- 6:19Speaker 2: in redraft league's closers generally hard to come by, and
- 6:23Speaker 2: right now I feel like there's only like ten of
- 6:25Speaker 2: them out there.
- 6:25Speaker 3: There's more, but it's kind of hard to figure out
- 6:27Speaker 3: who's who.
- 6:29Speaker 2: You don't get to put him on the injured list,
- 6:31Speaker 2: and so he just takes up a bench spot for
- 6:34Speaker 2: the next month as you try to figure out what happens.
- 6:35Speaker 2: So yeah, feel free to I guess to cut him loose.
- 6:39Speaker 2: But it's not looking good for manual Class A.
- 6:43Speaker 1: No. I mean, I don't know if he's actually ever
- 6:46Speaker 1: going to come back. I wouldn't be surprised if Class
- 6:48Speaker 1: A and ortis are stuck with lifetime bands here. It's
- 6:51Speaker 1: just like the fact pattern. I just don't see how
- 6:54Speaker 1: they would be put on such lengthy administrative leaves without
- 6:59Speaker 1: there really being some evidence there, and especially given the
- 7:04Speaker 1: way that the digital sports books work is that they
- 7:07Speaker 1: communicate a lot with the league on this, and the
- 7:10Speaker 1: players aren't actually allowed to bet on any bat to
- 7:13Speaker 1: ball sports like period. They can't bet on any minor
- 7:16Speaker 1: league baseball, any softball things like that. So there is
- 7:21Speaker 1: a pretty bright line there, and if he did cross it,
- 7:25Speaker 1: I mean, I don't blame them for taking him out
- 7:28Speaker 1: of this and putting him on leave and banning him,
- 7:31Speaker 1: because it's just it's a very slippery slope I think
- 7:34Speaker 1: in terms of the way this will go. But you
- 7:38Speaker 1: also can't blame them considering, like you said, all the
- 7:41Speaker 1: advertising that's in their faces if they did fall victim
- 7:45Speaker 1: or prey to some of these betting sites. And you know,
- 7:49Speaker 1: obviously I don't want to kind of project things onto
- 7:51Speaker 1: ortis and Class A, but it's not like they're crossover
- 7:55Speaker 1: of folks that are in MLB and those with the
- 8:00Speaker 1: susceptibility to gambling. Addiction is a zero ven diagram. So
- 8:04Speaker 1: there's some blood I think on the league's hand in
- 8:07Speaker 1: terms of how far they've let the betting go. I mean,
- 8:11Speaker 1: also on top of it, like I'm sure folks before
- 8:13Speaker 1: you tuned into this podcast probably got a betting based advertisement.
- 8:18Speaker 1: I don't necessarily condone that. So like, it's, uh, it's
- 8:22Speaker 1: just everywhere and it's hard to avoid, and it's just
- 8:26Speaker 1: not great. I don't feel great about it.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, the only thing that let's to find
- 8:30Speaker 2: out is about class. A had an interpreter that's betting
- 8:32Speaker 2: for him, so.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Ll we'll see. There's nothing you to drop here. But
- 8:36Speaker 3: you're probably right.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Maybe I'm giving the benefit of the group doubt to say, hey,
- 8:41Speaker 2: let's action figure out what happens here. But I think
- 8:44Speaker 2: if if it's not appropriate to say, but if I
- 8:47Speaker 2: was a betting man, I would say, we're not gonna
- 8:49Speaker 2: see my class play pitching, at least not this year,
- 8:51Speaker 2: but probably for a much longer than that.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Yeah, it'll be fascinating to see how on wines too,
- 8:57Speaker 1: because I mean this he was on a Hall of
- 8:59Speaker 1: Fame track through age twenty seven. Right now, he had
- 9:03Speaker 1: one hundred and eighty two saves of one eighty eight
- 9:05Speaker 1: career er and just to flush it all down the drain,
- 9:09Speaker 1: for there's no way could have covered through the betting
- 9:13Speaker 1: whatever the kickback was to cover his four million dollars
- 9:17Speaker 1: annual salary through the end of next year and then,
- 9:19Speaker 1: like I said, like this legacy is gone, so I
- 9:24Speaker 1: don't have any issue. I think moving on from Class
- 9:26Speaker 1: A wherever you have him, because I don't like the
- 9:30Speaker 1: way that this is trending. Okay, well, you said, we're fast, quickly,
- 9:37Speaker 1: rapidly approaching the trade deadline tomorrow afternoon, So let's get
- 9:41Speaker 1: into some of the trades that we do have before
- 9:42Speaker 1: we get into a very lengthy injury report because it's
- 9:47Speaker 1: been a bloodbath over the past week. First one we're
- 9:51Speaker 1: going to start with is Josh Naylor going to Seattle,
- 9:54Speaker 1: so he was dealt from Arizona and also has become
- 9:58Speaker 1: the first player for the Diamondbacks in Diamondbacks history to
- 10:02Speaker 1: steal four bags in his first four games. So way
- 10:05Speaker 1: to go there, Josh Naylor is he's just kind of
- 10:07Speaker 1: turned into the burner that we obviously all predicted he
- 10:11Speaker 1: would turn he would become. He is going to be
- 10:13Speaker 1: a free agent in the offseason, so it's not sticking
- 10:15Speaker 1: in Seattle. But in Arizona he had been hitting two
- 10:21Speaker 1: ninety two, three sixty four forty seven. That's a one
- 10:24Speaker 1: to twenty three WRC plus with eleven homers and eleven steals.
- 10:29Speaker 1: How close do you think he can come to replicating
- 10:32Speaker 1: that production which was up there? I mean, I think
- 10:34Speaker 1: that's probably I haven't checked our player rat in a
- 10:37Speaker 1: little bit, but that he was trending in like the
- 10:39Speaker 1: top five six ish first baseman throughout the season, partly
- 10:43Speaker 1: because of those bags. Eleven bags is a lot uh,
- 10:46Speaker 1: not a quick dude very much in the I take
- 10:49Speaker 1: a base when it's opportune for me type of steeler
- 10:52Speaker 1: Josh Naylor is. But do you think he can come
- 10:55Speaker 1: anywhere close to that line that he produced with Arizona
- 10:58Speaker 1: now that he's in Seattle?
- 11:01Speaker 2: Unfortunately, I am concerned this is probably the worst lngthing
- 11:06Speaker 2: spot that Josh Naylor could could have had a team
- 11:09Speaker 2: that's I'd say Douns decently have to play Coyle. Rally's
- 11:13Speaker 2: kind of figured out that ballpark two degree. But you
- 11:17Speaker 2: know that he's moving from arguably one of the top
- 11:20Speaker 2: three ballparks to hit to arguably the worst. You know,
- 11:27Speaker 2: if you actually look at this year, out of Seattle's
- 11:32Speaker 2: second worst ballpark the last three years has been the
- 11:34Speaker 2: worst ballpark Diamondbacks Chase Field has been a top five
- 11:39Speaker 2: ballpark this year top three of the last few years.
- 11:43Speaker 3: So he has a.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Significant, significant downgrade from a ballpark perspective, and you know
- 11:50Speaker 2: it's gonna zapp his power to a degree. And also,
- 11:54Speaker 2: you know, Naylor just isn't necessarily a burner. You know,
- 11:58Speaker 2: I have to think that That's not why cl really
- 12:02Speaker 2: went after him. It's not to steal. But hey, to
- 12:04Speaker 2: your point, he's done. He's that's the one thing he's
- 12:07Speaker 2: doing so far since he got there is running, so
- 12:15Speaker 2: unfortunate for him. I still think he's got a decent
- 12:16Speaker 2: amount of value. He's he's on arguably a career year
- 12:21Speaker 2: after what was arguably a careerer last year. So he's
- 12:23Speaker 2: he's really turned into a solid fantasy fantasy hitter here.
- 12:26Speaker 3: So still a lot of value there.
- 12:28Speaker 2: But I'm taking it down to probably about ninety percent
- 12:30Speaker 2: expectations versus what I would have had if he remained
- 12:34Speaker 2: in Arizona.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, I think that's fair. I also misspoke. I
- 12:37Speaker 1: meant to say he's the first Mariners player in this
- 12:40Speaker 1: first four games.
- 12:41Speaker 3: I just I just rolled with it. I knew it,
- 12:43Speaker 3: chanted I appreciate it.
- 12:47Speaker 1: Okay, let's move on to the next trade, which literally
- 12:50Speaker 1: just went down. Like an hour ago, we have Ryan Helsley,
- 12:52Speaker 1: closer from the Saint Louis Cardinals, moving to the New
- 12:55Speaker 1: York Mets, where he should presumably be in the setup
- 12:59Speaker 1: role for or Edwin Diaz. But if anything does go
- 13:02Speaker 1: awry with Diaz, I think Helsley would be the next
- 13:04Speaker 1: man up there. In return, the three prospects came back
- 13:08Speaker 1: to the Cardinals. One of those is Hayesus Bias, who
- 13:12Speaker 1: this kind of shows like what the price is escalated
- 13:15Speaker 1: to on the reliever market, because Bias is a pretty
- 13:19Speaker 1: solid prospect in I think he's number six in MLB pipeline,
- 13:23Speaker 1: fifteenth on fanographs as a forty plus there. But honestly,
- 13:28Speaker 1: he's a little bit better of a fantasy prospect. Bias
- 13:32Speaker 1: is because he's got a great, solid hit tool. He's
- 13:35Speaker 1: a twenty year old right now in High A hitting
- 13:38Speaker 1: two forty four, three thirty four, four h six. That's
- 13:41Speaker 1: a one to twenty three WRC plus with ten homers
- 13:45Speaker 1: seven stolen bases. So thoughts here on Hellsley going to
- 13:49Speaker 1: the Mets, if any and a little bit of insight
- 13:52Speaker 1: maybe on Bias and what you might be stashing him
- 13:55Speaker 1: away in.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you know, ultimately this hurts Helsey's value.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Like if there was one spot that he was going
- 14:02Speaker 2: to go to that he was not going to be
- 14:04Speaker 2: closing there, there weren't many. That is what is in
- 14:07Speaker 2: New York. He's probably I think he still gets a
- 14:11Speaker 2: few safe chances here and there because Diaz is you know,
- 14:15Speaker 2: a little bit chaotic at times, and I think he's
- 14:18Speaker 2: a guy they don't want to always throw back to back.
- 14:20Speaker 2: So this this will give him a little bit of
- 14:21Speaker 2: of reprieve in a more of a long term format,
- 14:25Speaker 2: dynasty type format. You got to keep Helsley because he's
- 14:27Speaker 2: been a free agent. He's likely going to be a
- 14:29Speaker 2: closer somewhere else. Uh next year. That's he's going to
- 14:31Speaker 2: get paid paid to do that. That's very much kind
- 14:34Speaker 2: of the Tanner Scott uh scenario that we saw as
- 14:38Speaker 2: far as losing jobs, coming back and getting a closing
- 14:43Speaker 2: role in the off season between the Padres and the
- 14:45Speaker 2: in the in the Dodgers last year. So I think,
- 14:49Speaker 2: you know, Helsley has taken a step back this year,
- 14:51Speaker 2: not incredibly far far back, but uh, and he's been
- 14:55Speaker 2: in probably value from fantasy perspective, but it's gonna be
- 14:58Speaker 2: kind of muted the rest of the year. He'll still
- 15:00Speaker 2: give some some relatively valuable ratio numbers outside of the
- 15:04Speaker 2: Whip's been a little oh question this year.
- 15:07Speaker 3: Decent return.
- 15:08Speaker 2: I think for the Cardinals they were going after non
- 15:12Speaker 2: forty man roster guys, and so I think they actually
- 15:14Speaker 2: be actually be happy and both the pictures they got
- 15:16Speaker 2: outside of bias actually gets some pretty high marks from
- 15:20Speaker 2: some prospect evaluators out there, much more upside guys, but
- 15:23Speaker 2: have been performing really really well since they since they've
- 15:27Speaker 2: got up the Mets system so further away, but to
- 15:30Speaker 2: your point, still pretty gosterned solid return for a few
- 15:34Speaker 2: months here of a of a middle reliever at this
- 15:37Speaker 2: point on the Mets.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Yeah, anybody in the Cardinals bullpen that you might be
- 15:41Speaker 1: targeting for saves going forward?
- 15:44Speaker 3: Oh, that's the tough one is I think the answer
- 15:50Speaker 3: is yes. But will they be there tomorrow? I don't know.
- 15:53Speaker 2: And so if you're looking at the hierarchy, they're in
- 15:58Speaker 2: the Cardinals bullpen. I probably got a film a Tune
- 16:01Speaker 2: as the default closer for the next day, and then
- 16:07Speaker 2: followed closely by Jojo Romero, But both of them, I
- 16:11Speaker 2: don't necessarily expect are going to necessarily beyond the Cardinals
- 16:16Speaker 2: as of roughly twenty four hours from now, and so
- 16:20Speaker 2: I think if you have to go a little bit
- 16:22Speaker 2: deeper and you're looking to try to find the guy
- 16:26Speaker 2: that's really going to be the closer for the Cardinals
- 16:28Speaker 2: the rest of the season, if I'm picking, I might
- 16:33Speaker 2: go with Gordon Griffeco.
- 16:36Speaker 3: More Kyle Lay. Those are the two that I would say.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Graffaco actually has a little bit better stuff like from
- 16:45Speaker 2: a closer type perspective, looks a little bit more like
- 16:48Speaker 2: a traditional closer, and I think they're going to try
- 16:51Speaker 2: to give somebody just a run at it, and he's
- 16:54Speaker 2: the guy that I think is the last man standing
- 16:58Speaker 2: after the trade deadline that gets that role. Mattz is
- 17:01Speaker 2: the other guy that people will probably talk about. I
- 17:03Speaker 2: don't see him getting the closure role at all if
- 17:06Speaker 2: he sticks around because he's first of all, I don't
- 17:09Speaker 2: think he'll stick around, but he fits more than a
- 17:12Speaker 2: swing man, middle reliever scenario. So going on the limb
- 17:16Speaker 2: and those are the guys that go after. But that's
- 17:18Speaker 2: mainly because I think the rest of the bullpen's going
- 17:20Speaker 2: to be traded.
- 17:22Speaker 1: Yeah, you didn't pick my favorite. I think mine's Riley O'Brien.
- 17:27Speaker 2: Actually, well, I thought you might go there. I just
- 17:30Speaker 2: the control I just I don't the control barks are a.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Bit much, but it is nasty stuff, and so I mean,
- 17:37Speaker 1: I don't know, like in terms of it depends on
- 17:40Speaker 1: what the Cardinals do, because like even without Hellsley, and
- 17:45Speaker 1: because this is still a strange lane for them. You know,
- 17:48Speaker 1: they're only I mean, it's not going great against the
- 17:50Speaker 1: Marlins right now, but you know, they're a game back
- 17:53Speaker 1: of five hundred, and they're still a little bit in
- 17:55Speaker 1: the mix, and it's just kind of been a lowell
- 17:58Speaker 1: offensively that I wonder if they also consider, like, hey,
- 18:02Speaker 1: we can still maybe hang around this thing a little bit,
- 18:05Speaker 1: if they really just want to pack it in, then
- 18:08Speaker 1: I think that's actually even more of a reason for
- 18:10Speaker 1: the Cardinals to go with Riley O'Brien, just to see
- 18:13Speaker 1: what a live arm can do and if he can
- 18:17Speaker 1: Swiss stand up to the pressure of being a closer,
- 18:19Speaker 1: maybe reel in those walks a little bit. If it
- 18:22Speaker 1: melts down over the first couple of weeks, then they
- 18:25Speaker 1: can go a different direction. But if you're looking for
- 18:27Speaker 1: I think the biggest upside play the biggest ceiling play,
- 18:32Speaker 1: and you don't care about floor, especially if you're in
- 18:35Speaker 1: a situation like maybe Autnu where you're just trying to
- 18:37Speaker 1: stash away the next closer. I think Riley O'Brien's not
- 18:40Speaker 1: a bad place to go.
- 18:41Speaker 2: Yeah, at the end of the day, I think it
- 18:43Speaker 2: said that I think the majority of this bullpen should
- 18:45Speaker 2: be traded in the next twenty four hours, so we
- 18:48Speaker 2: will see what actually happens. Because as a lifetime Cardinals fan,
- 18:54Speaker 2: seeing them actually make a decision to do one or
- 18:57Speaker 2: the other is not traditionally what we've had, but see
- 19:00Speaker 2: move gives us hope that a decision has been made
- 19:03Speaker 2: of selling here.
- 19:04Speaker 3: Will they actually do it effectively?
- 19:06Speaker 1: Whole different discussion, Yes, exactly. Okay, next trade we have
- 19:10Speaker 1: is another closer leaving his role, and this one's a
- 19:13Speaker 1: little bit more of a question mark because I alluded
- 19:15Speaker 1: to it at the top of our show. We've got
- 19:18Speaker 1: Johann Duran going from the Minnesota Twins to the Phillies
- 19:23Speaker 1: in exchange for Mick Abele and Eduardo Tait. So those
- 19:28Speaker 1: are two pretty solid prospects right there, as you. I
- 19:31Speaker 1: think actually part of it too is we're going to
- 19:33Speaker 1: see the prices go higher because of Class A being
- 19:36Speaker 1: off of the board. That like, it just becomes a
- 19:38Speaker 1: supply and demand issue for elite relievers, and so Duran
- 19:43Speaker 1: here has been I would say okay with the twins
- 19:47Speaker 1: in terms of what you were expecting coming in the season,
- 19:50Speaker 1: because the K nine has slipped under ten, it's at
- 19:54Speaker 1: nine point seven. The era has been fine, and the
- 19:56Speaker 1: fifth has been fine at two one and two forty
- 19:59Speaker 1: nine a piece, but he's only picked up sixteen saves
- 20:02Speaker 1: and has kind of been moved around a little bit
- 20:05Speaker 1: in that Minnesota bullpen, just speaking as somebody who had
- 20:07Speaker 1: a few Johan Duran shares coming into the season and
- 20:12Speaker 1: they've been shuffling him around with Griffin Jacks, who's also
- 20:15Speaker 1: kind of struggled, but may also be out the door
- 20:18Speaker 1: in Minnesota as they're clearly selling. So what do you
- 20:21Speaker 1: think the closer situation is going to be in both
- 20:24Speaker 1: Philly and Minnesota. We'll focus on that first and then
- 20:27Speaker 1: maybe follow up on Mickabel afterwards.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that there's really no question for me
- 20:33Speaker 2: that Duran is the Phillies closure.
- 20:36Speaker 3: Like I know that you could argue for Robertson or
- 20:39Speaker 3: something like that.
- 20:39Speaker 2: But like he's Duran's brought in to be the closure,
- 20:43Speaker 2: and yeah, he's not been as downant this year, but
- 20:46Speaker 2: he's he has such a great arsenal and isn't susceptible
- 20:52Speaker 2: to the home run like a lot of guys. So
- 20:54Speaker 2: the Phillies they need a guy like that, and so
- 20:57Speaker 2: he's gonna absolutely be be the closer that in Minnesota,
- 21:02Speaker 2: I think it's default Griffin Jacks. But I think, just
- 21:04Speaker 2: like the conversation with Philmtoon over in Saint Louis, I'm
- 21:08Speaker 2: not confident he's gonna be there tomorrow. And so at
- 21:11Speaker 2: what point you look at probably a Louis Varland or
- 21:14Speaker 2: brock Stewart or something like that. A shout out to
- 21:17Speaker 2: brock Stewart, Blumington, normal guy, but you know, I think
- 21:22Speaker 2: those are gonna be the guys that you look back on.
- 21:26Speaker 2: Very similar to Saint Louis. They're just looking to kind
- 21:30Speaker 2: of plug somebody in to last throughout the rest of
- 21:33Speaker 2: the season, and uh, they don't, I don't. They don't
- 21:38Speaker 2: really have like an up and coming guy at this
- 21:41Speaker 2: point at the major league level that they're going to
- 21:43Speaker 2: try to get all those uh opportunities and so I
- 21:46Speaker 2: think Varlin is probably the guy, uh that if Jack
- 21:48Speaker 2: s mooves tomorrow, is the guy that gets the opportunity, uh,
- 21:51Speaker 2: since he does have a little bit more uh control
- 21:55Speaker 2: uh left for for the twins and they'll they'll get
- 21:58Speaker 2: a chance to take advantage of that.
- 22:00Speaker 3: So I don't know what about you.
- 22:03Speaker 2: Are you in the same same spot there with those
- 22:05Speaker 2: bullpens expecting Jacks to move, expecting Duran to be the
- 22:08Speaker 2: full time closer there in Philadelphia?
- 22:10Speaker 1: Yeah, I think so that like a little bit of
- 22:12Speaker 1: a bummer, considering I just dropped a nice little bit
- 22:15Speaker 1: on David Robertson in our CBS league together. But so, yeah,
- 22:20Speaker 1: that's a bit of a bummer, considering Robertson probably went
- 22:24Speaker 1: for decent dollars in fab auctions this weekend. I mean,
- 22:28Speaker 1: also a little bit surprising that this happened just because
- 22:32Speaker 1: Duran still has two years left. He's not a Frasian
- 22:37Speaker 1: until twenty twenty seven, which is why it cost the
- 22:39Speaker 1: Phillies a couple of pretty high end prospects. In terms
- 22:43Speaker 1: of what you were talking about on the Minnesota bullpen,
- 22:45Speaker 1: I agreed, like, if anything, this is way more of
- 22:48Speaker 1: a weight and see situation than the Cardinals, because like,
- 22:51Speaker 1: there are a few arms that you kind of highlighted
- 22:54Speaker 1: and I highlighted with O'Brien and the Cardinals bullpen, but like,
- 22:58Speaker 1: I have no clue in this Twins bullpen because if
- 23:01Speaker 1: they're going to tear it down to the level of
- 23:03Speaker 1: this is going to be a competitive team next year,
- 23:05Speaker 1: and they just got rid of their closer for next year,
- 23:09Speaker 1: where are they going. Are they gutting this all the
- 23:12Speaker 1: way further in the liquidating the team in Minnesota or
- 23:18Speaker 1: did they just get an offer they couldn't refuse for
- 23:20Speaker 1: Duran or you know, it's there's a lot of variables.
- 23:24Speaker 1: So there's a lot of different arms in that bullpen
- 23:27Speaker 1: in Minnesota, and so it'll be fascinating to see who's
- 23:31Speaker 1: still around this time tomorrow. But let's turn to some
- 23:34Speaker 1: of those prospects that came back, because one, you have
- 23:37Speaker 1: Mick Abel, who has pitched a couple times in the
- 23:41Speaker 1: major leagues this year handful six times. It's been very
- 23:44Speaker 1: mixed in terms of a five over four ERA, but
- 23:47Speaker 1: has been steady in triple a over seventy four innings
- 23:50Speaker 1: with a two thirty one ERA. As he's finally honed
- 23:53Speaker 1: in the walks that were really his issue since being
- 23:57Speaker 1: drafted in the first round of twenty twenty. Just big
- 24:01Speaker 1: live arm. We'll see what the Twins can do there.
- 24:04Speaker 1: The other player here, Edward O. Tate, is actually a
- 24:07Speaker 1: huge get for this deadline, I think in terms of
- 24:10Speaker 1: prospect value. He's an eighteen year old in High A
- 24:14Speaker 1: as a catcher, which is like Ethan Solis level type
- 24:18Speaker 1: of like stuff. You don't see very many eighteen year
- 24:21Speaker 1: olds at that level. He has been mostly at Low
- 24:24Speaker 1: Way but was recently promoted to HYA. Has hit two
- 24:27Speaker 1: fifty five three nineteen four thirty four over three hundred
- 24:31Speaker 1: and sixty total play appearances over both stretches. So that's
- 24:35Speaker 1: a one oh seven WRC plus for an eighteen year
- 24:37Speaker 1: old down at that level, a guy that you would
- 24:40Speaker 1: normally just be seeing in like the Dominican Summer League
- 24:45Speaker 1: or maybe Complex Ball. So what's your interest here in
- 24:48Speaker 1: Abel and Tate joining Minnesota Twins.
- 24:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I think my biggest interest is more just in
- 24:55Speaker 3: an intrigue, which is Nick Abels, Like there's something Minnesota
- 25:00Speaker 3: Twins love tall pitchers. I don't if you've noticed this,
- 25:04Speaker 3: but like Joe Ryan is the smallest guy in that
- 25:07Speaker 3: rotation at like six to two, and then it's like
- 25:10Speaker 3: six ten six five six six and like ables to
- 25:14Speaker 3: a six to five guy. They love these big downhill pitchers,
- 25:18Speaker 3: and so they clearly see something that fits in their system.
- 25:21Speaker 3: And Able's been up and down, but we all know
- 25:24Speaker 3: that the talent's there. First rounder.
- 25:27Speaker 2: Does a lot of things well in control. His just
- 25:31Speaker 2: until this year has been his biggest concern. It seems
- 25:34Speaker 2: like it's played a lot better this year. So I
- 25:36Speaker 2: think there's a potential up arrow there, especially if he
- 25:40Speaker 2: can get up, maybe change up scenery, it'll be go
- 25:42Speaker 2: ahead and see him make.
- 25:44Speaker 3: Some improvements there. So I think that's a good get.
- 25:47Speaker 2: But to your point, it takes I think the biggest
- 25:49Speaker 2: piece here, Like he absolutely looks like a solid player,
- 25:53Speaker 2: and he's already arguably top fifty prospect in the league,
- 25:57Speaker 2: and so I think you might be right here where
- 26:00Speaker 2: the Twins got an offer they couldn't refuse and went
- 26:04Speaker 2: with it because they have Griffin Jacks that could slide
- 26:07Speaker 2: in that role. So you know, I said Jackson be
- 26:09Speaker 2: gonna be traded, but but it's very possible that there
- 26:11Speaker 2: they just look to capitalize on an asset here and said,
- 26:16Speaker 2: we got somebody else that can be a closer. We'll
- 26:18Speaker 2: retool a little in the off season at the back
- 26:20Speaker 2: of the bullpen and we'll be fine. But we we
- 26:24Speaker 2: see an opportunity here to add a potential I call
- 26:27Speaker 2: mid to back rotation arm and able and then a potential,
- 26:31Speaker 2: you know, long term valuable bat in.
- 26:34Speaker 3: The catcher position. So I think this was a good
- 26:38Speaker 3: get for I think it's a good trade all around.
- 26:40Speaker 3: Is really, I think what it comes to.
- 26:42Speaker 2: And I think it's fair to say for both of
- 26:44Speaker 2: the closures we saw with Hellsley and duran traded tonight,
- 26:48Speaker 2: it these are good baseball trades for for for both teams.
- 26:52Speaker 2: You had to pay up, but you didn't have to
- 26:54Speaker 2: give like Andrew Painter to get Durant or something.
- 26:57Speaker 1: Yeah. And I think especially in this Duran and trade,
- 27:01Speaker 1: big up arrows next to all three of these players,
- 27:03Speaker 1: between duran By and Philly for at least through twenty
- 27:07Speaker 1: twenty seven, huge dynasty had then For that perspective, you're
- 27:12Speaker 1: looking at Mick Abel actually having a place where he
- 27:14Speaker 1: doesn't have to worry about, you know, trying to crack
- 27:17Speaker 1: at the rotation against Zach Wheeler and hazus Lozardo at
- 27:21Speaker 1: all in Philadelphia, So huge up arrow there in a
- 27:24Speaker 1: dynasty league, and huge up arrow for Eduardo Tait two
- 27:28Speaker 1: in a dynasty league. Because there's not really many catchers
- 27:31Speaker 1: in that Minnesota system. I'm looking through it on roster resource.
- 27:35Speaker 1: No one's really kind of like that next catcher of
- 27:38Speaker 1: the future. And Ryan Jeffers is a free agent after
- 27:40Speaker 1: twenty twenty six, so you could see them. I mean,
- 27:44Speaker 1: Tate's already in Hya. If he goes to double A
- 27:46Speaker 1: and triple A next year, you could be seeing Tate
- 27:49Speaker 1: up pretty quickly, especially given he's a left handed bat.
- 27:52Speaker 1: He seems to be really solid. So I think all
- 27:55Speaker 1: three in a disty keeper situation well worth acquiring.
- 28:00Speaker 3: Yep, don't disagree.
- 28:01Speaker 1: Okay, let's move on to some third basement trades. So
- 28:05Speaker 1: we had two hot corners traded. One happened a little
- 28:08Speaker 1: bit earlier than the other. So we have Ryan McMahon
- 28:10Speaker 1: finally making that move from Colorado to the Bronx that
- 28:14Speaker 1: has been kind of feels like this has been rumored
- 28:16Speaker 1: for like two or three years, especially given that the
- 28:19Speaker 1: Yankees have been dealing with lots of fielding woes over
- 28:22Speaker 1: the past couple of weeks. This is a move they
- 28:25Speaker 1: needed to be able to make to shore up the
- 28:28Speaker 1: defense behind the pitchers there. I mean, the last time
- 28:33Speaker 1: that Ryan McMahon wasn't an elite defense of glove was
- 28:37Speaker 1: back in twenty nineteen, twenty twenty. I guess that is
- 28:40Speaker 1: a full season there technically, but he is among the
- 28:43Speaker 1: best third basement in the game that can pick it,
- 28:46Speaker 1: so huge up arrow, I think for Yankees' pitchers in general,
- 28:51Speaker 1: considering what's been at third base behind them. The question here, though,
- 28:55Speaker 1: is what do you think we get out of McMahon here,
- 28:58Speaker 1: because on his career, obviously he's played in cours his
- 29:02Speaker 1: entire career, So the home batting average, uh, I didn't
- 29:06Speaker 1: try to figure out the splits of like peeling out
- 29:08Speaker 1: the time with the Yankees. So his career home splits
- 29:11Speaker 1: right now is two sixty three batting average at home,
- 29:14Speaker 1: two sixteen on the road. But we do know that
- 29:16Speaker 1: there's a Cooris field hangover effect here where just you
- 29:21Speaker 1: have to adjust to being able to see like curveballs
- 29:23Speaker 1: actually move when you get out of Coors. You're adjusting
- 29:26Speaker 1: to and from the altitude, and so that two sixteen
- 29:29Speaker 1: doesn't tell the whole truth of who Ryan McMahon will
- 29:32Speaker 1: probably be in New York. This is a guy who
- 29:35Speaker 1: is a career two forty hitter. That's honestly probably where
- 29:41Speaker 1: I think he's probably gonna settle with the Yankees. What
- 29:43Speaker 1: about you? Do you think there's more upside to the
- 29:46Speaker 1: two forty or more downside as you're looking at McMahon
- 29:49Speaker 1: in the Bronx.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I think if if I was gonna take an
- 29:52Speaker 2: over under on the two forty, I'd probably go under,
- 29:54Speaker 2: but not by much. I think he's he's at two
- 29:57Speaker 2: thirty five. I would say two thirty five hitter, but
- 30:01Speaker 2: you know, we're we're splitting hairs there. The projection system
- 30:03Speaker 2: seem as like a two two twenty hitter. It's like
- 30:07Speaker 2: they're just looking what he's doing this year and projecting
- 30:08Speaker 2: it forward. But I think he is a little bit
- 30:11Speaker 2: better hitter. I think the ballpark it's this weird dynamic
- 30:15Speaker 2: where it's like an upgrade downgrade scenario where you're you're
- 30:18Speaker 2: missing the cores effect, but you got the shorter porch
- 30:21Speaker 2: there uh in in the outfield for McMahon, and so
- 30:26Speaker 2: I think that there's definitely some intrigue. It'll be interesting
- 30:31Speaker 2: to see how he adjusts from not beating cores in
- 30:33Speaker 2: you know what takes place. He actually is a little
- 30:36Speaker 2: bit more of a spray hitter than some of these
- 30:39Speaker 2: other guys that you know, Yankees love to bring these
- 30:42Speaker 2: lefties in because they're just chasing, chasing that short porch
- 30:46Speaker 2: out and right field, and McMahon he uses it. But
- 30:50Speaker 2: he's generally a pretty spray hitter all all across the Diamond.
- 30:56Speaker 2: He has pulled more uh this year than his history,
- 31:00Speaker 2: So I'm guessing the Yank Yankees are gonna kind of
- 31:02Speaker 2: lean into that. But I think this is only a
- 31:05Speaker 2: good news for McMahon. He's got a better cast around him.
- 31:08Speaker 2: You have to expect that he's gonna get better lineup protection,
- 31:13Speaker 2: and there's just something about playing for a team that
- 31:15Speaker 2: like Cares and so uh yeah, is he gonna you know,
- 31:20Speaker 2: was he hitting cleanup short of the time in Colorado?
- 31:22Speaker 2: Is he gonna drop down the lineup a little bit
- 31:25Speaker 2: here for for the Yankees? Sure, But I still think
- 31:29Speaker 2: this is a fantastic move for McMahon and it definitely
- 31:32Speaker 2: bumps up his value the rest of the season.
- 31:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I totally agree. So I think you you nailed it.
- 31:37Speaker 1: That you you've got to be able to tell your
- 31:40Speaker 1: story self, the story that this could be invigorating for
- 31:43Speaker 1: Ryan McMahon, and I think that only good can probably
- 31:46Speaker 1: happen that I don't know if there's he's also like
- 31:50Speaker 1: not a Joey gallow level name coming to New York, where,
- 31:53Speaker 1: like I know, Gallo really struggled when he joined the
- 31:56Speaker 1: Yankees because of just like the pressure of being in
- 31:58Speaker 1: New York. I don't think anybody in New York knows
- 32:02Speaker 1: who the hell Ryan McMahon is.
- 32:05Speaker 2: So yeah, he's gonna slide in there, and he's he's
- 32:08Speaker 2: not the savior like that.
- 32:09Speaker 1: That's a huge, exactly huge.
- 32:12Speaker 2: Lift off of the player. But he's got a lot
- 32:15Speaker 2: of he's got a lot of value that he will
- 32:16Speaker 2: bring to that lineup.
- 32:18Speaker 1: Yes, I think that's fair. Okay. The other third baseman
- 32:20Speaker 1: that we had traded was Cabrian Hayes going across the
- 32:24Speaker 1: division from the Pirates to the Reds and should take
- 32:28Speaker 1: over immediately as the third baseman there in Cincinnati, although
- 32:32Speaker 1: I mean, who knows. They've had a no weelv Marte there,
- 32:34Speaker 1: but they've been trying to move him in and out
- 32:36Speaker 1: of the outfield a little bit. And you know, Will
- 32:40Speaker 1: Benson has kind of been doing his classic Will Benson
- 32:43Speaker 1: up and down. So there's room, I think for Hayes. Plus,
- 32:47Speaker 1: I think the Reds really want Cabrian Hayes as his
- 32:50Speaker 1: glove in the lineup every day, considering if there was
- 32:53Speaker 1: one third baseman who's probably better than Ryan McMahon, it's
- 32:57Speaker 1: Cabrian Hayes. And so he's bringing his elite glove to Cincinnati.
- 33:02Speaker 1: But it also comes with a career eighty four wsrc
- 33:05Speaker 1: plus with a two fifty four, three oh seven three
- 33:08Speaker 1: sixty nine career slash line even worse this year two
- 33:12Speaker 1: thirty six, two seventy nine, two ninety ten. Stone bases
- 33:16Speaker 1: to save his profile a little bit. But is there
- 33:20Speaker 1: any hope of Cabrian Hayes returning any value in fantasy baseball?
- 33:24Speaker 2: No. You know, I used to be on the Cabrian
- 33:26Speaker 2: Hayes bandwagon because I'm a big fan of the guys
- 33:28Speaker 2: that needs to make one tweak to be relevant, and
- 33:31Speaker 2: Cabrian Hayes was that for a few years where he
- 33:33Speaker 2: just hit the snod out of the ball. He absolutely
- 33:36Speaker 2: obliterated the ball. Problem is he just hit into the
- 33:38Speaker 2: ground every single time, and so those were just hot grounders,
- 33:41Speaker 2: you know, to the second basement is all ends up
- 33:44Speaker 2: being and uh, you were just hoping that he would
- 33:48Speaker 2: start to put the ball in the air, and he is.
- 33:50Speaker 2: He has not made any any adjustment to that over
- 33:54Speaker 2: his career, and what's really ended up parting him is, uh,
- 33:58Speaker 2: even those that he's put in the air just have
- 34:00Speaker 2: making out. So he's had some suffering, some some poor
- 34:02Speaker 2: luck from a home run for fly ball rate as well,
- 34:04Speaker 2: because he's just hitting liners and ground balls and he's
- 34:07Speaker 2: just not this He does not play the launch angle
- 34:12Speaker 2: game like like like others do, and so he's there
- 34:16Speaker 2: for the glove. He's that's absolutely why he's there. Is
- 34:19Speaker 2: there maybe a little you know, opportunity from to revive, sure,
- 34:24Speaker 2: but this one was much more about the Pirates getting
- 34:28Speaker 2: out from under a contract and the Reds looking for
- 34:31Speaker 2: a really really solid, solid third basement that could help
- 34:34Speaker 2: that pitching staff in a in a tough pictures ballpark.
- 34:37Speaker 2: That that's what I see with this one. I didn't
- 34:40Speaker 2: see how is what there was, how much what happened
- 34:43Speaker 2: with the actual contract itself. I should have looked at
- 34:46Speaker 2: up before we got on there, but he was on
- 34:47Speaker 2: a pretty substantial extension that he had signed all the
- 34:51Speaker 2: way through twenty nine here. So this is not a
- 34:53Speaker 2: this is not a short term play here by by
- 34:56Speaker 2: any means from from the Reds. And I, like I said,
- 34:58Speaker 2: I really think the Pirates are just trying to get
- 35:00Speaker 2: out from one of this contract.
- 35:03Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's kind of also why Taylor Rodgers, we
- 35:05Speaker 1: didn't talk about the return for Pittsburgh because it wasn't
- 35:08Speaker 1: substantial as Taylor Rodgers and then a minor leaguer that
- 35:12Speaker 1: was new to me. I have to actually look it up.
- 35:15Speaker 1: He's probably like one of the top ones. Yeah, Sammy
- 35:18Speaker 1: Steffura Steffurr. I believe he is a twenty year old
- 35:22Speaker 1: in a ball so he's hitting one thirty one WRC
- 35:26Speaker 1: plus there but could rise to prominence. But when's the
- 35:31Speaker 1: last time the Pittsburgh Pirates developed a hit or just
- 35:33Speaker 1: look like Brian Ays. So there's that. So that is why,
- 35:37Speaker 1: like Taylor Rodgers went back to offset a little bit
- 35:40Speaker 1: that money, and I think the Pirates also kicked in
- 35:43Speaker 1: cash to Cincinnati as well. But yeah, he is going
- 35:46Speaker 1: to be there for a while, which I think is intriguing,
- 35:49Speaker 1: maybe a little bit from just you're looking at Red's
- 35:52Speaker 1: pitching that they haven't had a third baseman who can
- 35:56Speaker 1: kind of stick it the way that Hayes can. But
- 35:58Speaker 1: at the end of the day, they play in the
- 36:00Speaker 1: ballpark where fly balls are king, so it might not
- 36:03Speaker 1: make that much of a difference.
- 36:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I think maybe the biggest news here was that
- 36:09Speaker 2: both the Rogers brothers got traded on the same day,
- 36:14Speaker 2: Tyler and Taylor. Will got traded. So, you know, funny
- 36:18Speaker 2: facts like this is this is what I love about baseball.
- 36:21Speaker 2: When's the last time that two twins, two brothers got
- 36:23Speaker 2: traded on the same same day near the trade online?
- 36:26Speaker 2: Probably never, and it's irrelevant, but it's still fun.
- 36:31Speaker 1: Yes, great time. Okay, we got one last trade that
- 36:34Speaker 1: I want to cover from a fantasy relevant perspective, because
- 36:38Speaker 1: if we wanted to talk about every single reliever trade
- 36:41Speaker 1: that's going to be that's happened, we would be here first.
- 36:43Speaker 3: Probably another's happened.
- 36:44Speaker 1: Will been recording. I just checked up. There hasn't yet,
- 36:48Speaker 1: but I feel like one's about to drop, So the
- 36:51Speaker 1: other one I want to I want to focus on.
- 36:53Speaker 1: It's actually two trades, the Rays. This is one of
- 36:57Speaker 1: the stranger situations I think I've in just my baseball
- 37:02Speaker 1: kind of like watching time, where the Rays traded Danny
- 37:06Speaker 1: Jansen to Milwaukee, who had been relatively solid for the
- 37:10Speaker 1: Rays as a I mean, especially if you're in like
- 37:12Speaker 1: a fifteen team league. He was playing in terms of
- 37:14Speaker 1: a two oh four three fourteen three eighty nine slash
- 37:17Speaker 1: line as a catcher. The big calling card was his
- 37:19Speaker 1: eleven taters, so that's what he was there for. Going
- 37:23Speaker 1: to be a backup in Milwaukee, So pretty useless I
- 37:26Speaker 1: think going forward, because even with William Canturis being a
- 37:30Speaker 1: little banged up there battling a hand injury, he's not
- 37:35Speaker 1: going to date very much. As Reyes Hoskins should be
- 37:38Speaker 1: back pretty soon and they're already in talks for other
- 37:41Speaker 1: bats there, so should be a strict kind of backup
- 37:45Speaker 1: role for Danny Jansen. So what the Rays then did
- 37:47Speaker 1: was to bring a Nick Fortes from the Miami Marlins
- 37:50Speaker 1: to be able to catch it in tandem with Matt Tice,
- 37:53Speaker 1: who should be the standard every day catcher there in Tampa.
- 37:57Speaker 1: Now Tye is I don't think Fortes or Tye have
- 38:01Speaker 1: any fancy relevance where I'm going here with this question,
- 38:03Speaker 1: is any concerns maybe with race pitching going forward, because
- 38:08Speaker 1: this is a reason why you don't see too many
- 38:10Speaker 1: catchers move at the deadline because of just the uphill
- 38:14Speaker 1: battle of having to learn a pitching staff when joining
- 38:17Speaker 1: a new team. But now we've kind of got the
- 38:20Speaker 1: flip side here where even Tye wasn't with the Rays
- 38:24Speaker 1: the entire season. He started actually on the White Sox
- 38:27Speaker 1: and then moved his way to the Rays. So you've
- 38:29Speaker 1: got two relatively new catchers in Tampa. Does that give
- 38:33Speaker 1: you pause or concern about any of their pitchers going forward?
- 38:37Speaker 1: As you know there could be a lack of repertoire
- 38:40Speaker 1: between the pitcher and the backstop or just a lack
- 38:43Speaker 1: of communication.
- 38:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I would generally say yes, except for I think
- 38:50Speaker 2: that's exact reason they brought Nick Fourtes in. He has
- 38:53Speaker 2: readed out historically as a much above average catcher, really
- 38:58Speaker 2: great framer, and so I think they brought him in
- 39:00Speaker 2: first of all cost saving metrics, but to keep the
- 39:03Speaker 2: stability there because he is a really good fielding catcher.
- 39:08Speaker 2: Uh maybe not a hitting catcher by by any means.
- 39:10Speaker 2: So I think he's he's gonna probably play a little
- 39:12Speaker 2: bit more than people expect because I think they're expecting
- 39:15Speaker 2: him to handle the brunt of that pitching staff, and
- 39:17Speaker 2: there is a talented but young pitching staff. They're they're
- 39:20Speaker 2: in Tampa, and so I think they're wanting him to
- 39:23Speaker 2: maybe usher them in. The Rays love to straddle the
- 39:26Speaker 2: line right at the trade deadline. They feel like that
- 39:29Speaker 2: Like if any team, UH in the major leagues represents
- 39:32Speaker 2: a true like fantasy dynasty team, it's the Rays. They're
- 39:36Speaker 2: always buying and.
- 39:37Speaker 3: Selling you you quit, can't quite tell what they're want
- 39:39Speaker 3: to do. Uh.
- 39:40Speaker 2: They're like that guy in your league that is never
- 39:41Speaker 2: gonna win it, but never gonna lose it. He's the
- 39:43Speaker 2: consistent fourth place finisher.
- 39:45Speaker 3: That's you're talking about me.
- 39:46Speaker 2: Sorry, if I wasn't gonna say that, I may have
- 39:49Speaker 2: had names in mind, but I'm just gonna keep him
- 39:51Speaker 2: myself for now. But I think I'm not too concerned
- 39:57Speaker 2: about the rotation because I think that's what why Fortest
- 39:59Speaker 2: was brought in.
- 40:00Speaker 1: Okay, all right, Well, I don't know how to handle
- 40:03Speaker 1: that slight. That was a that was very low key
- 40:05Speaker 1: into the culture out but that was very smooth. That's
- 40:09Speaker 1: going to wrap up our our trade session here before
- 40:13Speaker 1: we get into the doom and gloom of all the injuries,
- 40:15Speaker 1: I figured maybe we can start with a couple of promotions.
- 40:18Speaker 1: So we had a couple of big ones happened this week.
- 40:21Speaker 1: First one we've got is Alex Freeland of the Los
- 40:24Speaker 1: Angeles Dodgers, a switch hitting shortstop who in the update
- 40:28Speaker 1: on Fangrafts's Top Prospects list clocked it at number thirty nine,
- 40:33Speaker 1: which is pretty good considering he was a third round
- 40:35Speaker 1: pick in twenty twenty two out of Central Florida and
- 40:39Speaker 1: signed a pretty low bonus deal. So the Dodgers really
- 40:43Speaker 1: developed Freeland as he was slashing two fifty three, three
- 40:48Speaker 1: seventy seven four twenty one. That's a one oh eight
- 40:50Speaker 1: WRC plus and triple A as a twenty three year
- 40:53Speaker 1: old twelve homer seventeen stolen basis, so good power speed
- 40:57Speaker 1: combo coming up to place shorts up probably most of
- 41:01Speaker 1: the time. Because Tommy Edmund's kind of falling apart and
- 41:04Speaker 1: has been battling an ankle issue again. His Hayes on
- 41:09Speaker 1: Kim is on the I L H. Mookie Betts has
- 41:13Speaker 1: been shuffled around, and I guess freelance more a third
- 41:18Speaker 1: bets is that shortstop, so he should be at least
- 41:21Speaker 1: in the lineup until Max Mounsey comes back. But at
- 41:25Speaker 1: this point they probably also don't want to rush Max
- 41:27Speaker 1: Munsey from that knee injury to make sure that he's
- 41:29Speaker 1: recovered for the playoff run. So what do you see
- 41:32Speaker 1: here in Alex Freeland's bat? How aggressively are you going
- 41:36Speaker 1: to be trying to acquire him in leagues with that
- 41:38Speaker 1: he's going to be on the waiver wire.
- 41:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I think that this this is a
- 41:43Speaker 3: I'm gonna call it a solid, high floor, lowish ceiling
- 41:49Speaker 3: type of bat.
- 41:50Speaker 2: He oddly kind of feels like a Tommy Edmund good
- 41:55Speaker 2: comp is you know, middling that average, little pop, little speed, uh,
- 42:04Speaker 2: nothing overly amazing. You know, his stats at Triple A
- 42:07Speaker 2: do look decent, but you have to remember, you know,
- 42:10Speaker 2: the league he was playing is has some good numbers.
- 42:14Speaker 3: He was only eight.
- 42:14Speaker 2: Percent above league league gaverage there, and so the twelve homer,
- 42:20Speaker 2: seventeen steel seventy one RBI is like it's a as
- 42:23Speaker 2: a league that produces of offense. So I'm not jumping
- 42:26Speaker 2: out here. The Dodgers also have a tendency to bring
- 42:28Speaker 2: these guys up because they don't have any more development
- 42:31Speaker 2: to be done, but they don't also have a full
- 42:32Speaker 2: time role for them. So I think he's a he's
- 42:36Speaker 2: worth a dart throw, but I'm not running out anytime
- 42:39Speaker 2: soon to try to grab Freeland. I think he's gonna
- 42:42Speaker 2: he's gonna spot start type of thing. He's gonna get
- 42:45Speaker 2: something for a little bit, but as Edmond gets healthy,
- 42:47Speaker 2: as once he gets healthy, the bats are gonna probably
- 42:50Speaker 2: dry up. I think he's gonna be more of a
- 42:52Speaker 2: super utility guy for for a little short term play here.
- 42:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's all fair, and even long term,
- 42:59Speaker 1: it's really hard to see how Freeland kind of works
- 43:03Speaker 1: his way into this team. I guess Max Munsey could
- 43:07Speaker 1: be a free agent because it's a club option in
- 43:09Speaker 1: the offseason, So maybe that is why they've been trying
- 43:12Speaker 1: to break Freeland in at third to see if he
- 43:14Speaker 1: can stick for Munsey in twenty twenty six. But that
- 43:16Speaker 1: is something maybe to watch, is that if Freeland can
- 43:19Speaker 1: hang and play third, then he might actually be a
- 43:22Speaker 1: bit of a dynasty buy, because if he's the opening
- 43:25Speaker 1: day third baseman for the Los Angeles Dodgers, in twenty
- 43:28Speaker 1: twenty six. Even if he's hitting ninth, that's still a
- 43:31Speaker 1: great lineup.
- 43:32Speaker 2: Yeah, you are right, Like if he can, he's one
- 43:36Speaker 2: of those guys. If he can start off solid and
- 43:39Speaker 2: just continue to be like healthy, field, well, run well,
- 43:42Speaker 2: hit well enough, then he might be able to sneak
- 43:46Speaker 2: out some value just playing this unbelievable lineup and get
- 43:49Speaker 2: a little value that way. But yeah, still not a
- 43:51Speaker 2: guy that I'm gonna go head over heels for.
- 43:53Speaker 1: Yeah, and mostly just showed that he can whiff at
- 43:57Speaker 1: less than a thirty percent k rate, so that's be
- 44:00Speaker 1: pretty key I think for him. Okay, next promotion we
- 44:03Speaker 1: have of a major prospect is Carson wizen Hunt finally
- 44:07Speaker 1: debuted for the San Francisco Giants this week. It was
- 44:10Speaker 1: a very middling debut, as he allowed four earned runs
- 44:15Speaker 1: over his five innings only struck out four as well.
- 44:19Speaker 1: Is that correct? Let me three, he only struck out three,
- 44:22Speaker 1: so not even didn't even get the fourth strikeout there,
- 44:26Speaker 1: And unfortunately, like all the stuff looked bad on the
- 44:29Speaker 1: stuff plus metrics, where that's kind of what I was
- 44:32Speaker 1: hoping would be. Carson wizen Hunt's saving grace is that,
- 44:35Speaker 1: I mean he's his changeup is nasty, but I just
- 44:39Speaker 1: don't know how it's gonna work in major league baseball stuff.
- 44:43Speaker 1: Plus also isn't great about like clocking change ups and
- 44:45Speaker 1: stuff the first go around. But I mean you can
- 44:49Speaker 1: just see in terms of its usage and it's k rates,
- 44:53Speaker 1: it was just okay. And so he is also going
- 44:56Speaker 1: to struggle, I think, to keep it in the strike zone.
- 44:59Speaker 1: That's kind of his bugaboo has been the past couple
- 45:02Speaker 1: of years. Is why he hasn't been promoted, is that
- 45:05Speaker 1: he's walked. He's walked too many dudes. So I've kind
- 45:08Speaker 1: of I used to be a Carson Wizen Hunt guy,
- 45:10Speaker 1: but I've kind of cooled as it kind of stalled
- 45:13Speaker 1: out at Triple A over the past couple of years.
- 45:16Speaker 1: But do you maybe seeing more in this profile?
- 45:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I'm probably gonna be on the same
- 45:22Speaker 2: wavelength here. And honestly, it's probably less about Carson was
- 45:25Speaker 2: in Hunt and than it is about the Giants. You
- 45:28Speaker 2: go through and we talk a lot about like here's
- 45:30Speaker 2: a team that, if you're a pitcher on, we're really
- 45:32Speaker 2: excited to see because this is the kind of guy that, like,
- 45:35Speaker 2: I feel like the Giants over the last few years
- 45:37Speaker 2: have gone the opposite direction, where any high octane pitcher
- 45:42Speaker 2: with some some decent stuff in the minors but generally
- 45:46Speaker 2: has control issues. That's kind of like their their thing.
- 45:49Speaker 2: They can't figure out how to get the most out
- 45:51Speaker 2: of them, and then they just kind of squander at
- 45:53Speaker 2: the upper levels of the minor leagues and they end
- 45:55Speaker 2: up trying to shuffle them in and get some starts
- 45:59Speaker 2: at them, and they just can't really establish themselves in
- 46:01Speaker 2: the majors. And I feel like the same thing's coming
- 46:04Speaker 2: happening for wizen Hunt here. I just just don't see
- 46:07Speaker 2: it playing really well. It's not like he was banging
- 46:11Speaker 2: down on the door in Triple A and needing to
- 46:14Speaker 2: be called up.
- 46:14Speaker 3: Like there wasn't chatter of.
- 46:16Speaker 2: Like, oh when's wizen Hunt getting come when coming up?
- 46:19Speaker 2: This isn't like Andrew Painter, this is Bubba Chandler, This
- 46:21Speaker 2: isn't I'm trying to think there's there's another a few
- 46:24Speaker 2: out there that.
- 46:25Speaker 3: Are doing the same thing.
- 46:25Speaker 2: It's just like, when do these guys get the opportunity.
- 46:28Speaker 2: Nobody said that about wizen Hunt. It was like a
- 46:30Speaker 2: wizen hunts up dart throw. Let's let's see what happens.
- 46:34Speaker 2: So I'm I'm probably I'm more generally just out of
- 46:37Speaker 2: giants pictures from a development perspective right now, and car
- 46:41Speaker 2: Wiz Hunt gets swept up in that.
- 46:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's all very fair. Okay, Well, with that,
- 46:47Speaker 1: we are pretty far into this podcast already and we're
- 46:51Speaker 1: about to cover a huge slate of injuries, so it's
- 46:55Speaker 1: gonna be a gloomy time from here on out, I think, so.
- 46:59Speaker 2: Uh.
- 47:00Speaker 1: Good thing is we don't have a big one to
- 47:01Speaker 1: talk about show Heeo Tani because as we've been talking,
- 47:04Speaker 1: we've actually this is the Wednesday night where he got
- 47:07Speaker 1: pulled from his start. Looked a little ominous in terms
- 47:10Speaker 1: of the way that he left, but did stay in
- 47:12Speaker 1: as the DH and I just saw a skit that
- 47:16Speaker 1: he was just going through cramping. So should be full
- 47:19Speaker 1: systems go for Otani going forward. We have avoided the scare,
- 47:23Speaker 1: so that's great. Don't have to talk about an Otani injury.
- 47:26Speaker 1: We just have a couple of other first rounders to
- 47:28Speaker 1: talk about. First one, outfielder Aaron Judge of the New
- 47:32Speaker 1: York Yankees shelved with a flexer strain in his elbow.
- 47:37Speaker 1: That's what the imaging came back as for a good
- 47:40Speaker 1: twenty four hours it was not sounding good. It was
- 47:43Speaker 1: trending towards UCL territory, and honestly at this point too
- 47:47Speaker 1: it all. It really sounds like Judge is going to
- 47:51Speaker 1: probably return before it's kind of fully healed, just so
- 47:54Speaker 1: they can get the bat back in the lineup for
- 47:56Speaker 1: the Yankees as they're in the throes of this playoff race,
- 48:00Speaker 1: which will be interesting to see how they manage gian
- 48:03Speaker 1: Carlos Stanton returning back to the field. Maybe any of
- 48:07Speaker 1: those gains we see from Ryan McMahon being at the
- 48:09Speaker 1: hot corner will be given right back a stand in
- 48:13Speaker 1: his pack in the outfield. So as somebody who has
- 48:17Speaker 1: judged in a couple of leagues, I'm guessing if you
- 48:21Speaker 1: have him on your fancy teams, this is a bad
- 48:24Speaker 1: time because I have him in one head to head
- 48:26Speaker 1: league in like that had to head league team is
- 48:29Speaker 1: just like treading water until Aaron Judge gets back. But
- 48:33Speaker 1: I mean that's really all you can do right like
- 48:35Speaker 1: this is it's certainly a injury that goes on his record,
- 48:42Speaker 1: but it's not a huge injury. It's not a UCL.
- 48:45Speaker 1: But any concerns maybe going forward.
- 48:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think there's terribly big concerns. Like he
- 48:52Speaker 2: was already taking fly balls in the outfield this afternoon,
- 48:55Speaker 2: not throwing, not throwing by any means. And I think
- 48:58Speaker 2: you're right, like he'll come back. He'll he'll still clapper
- 49:01Speaker 2: the baseball. So I'm not really too concerned. It's just
- 49:04Speaker 2: like he's a little extended rest here and he'll be back.
- 49:07Speaker 2: I think that what was really telling is that Spencer
- 49:10Speaker 2: Jones did not get called up as a result of this.
- 49:13Speaker 3: And you know Spencer Jones.
- 49:15Speaker 2: Uh, you know, is like a Aaron Judge clone six seven,
- 49:19Speaker 2: two forty aistlefielder down there in Triple A.
- 49:23Speaker 3: And you know.
- 49:25Speaker 2: He's got twenty nine homers, hitting three seventy uh three
- 49:28Speaker 2: seventeen sorry with with a thirty one percent strikeout rate,
- 49:32Speaker 2: which is concerning, but uh, he's clearly done at Triple A,
- 49:36Speaker 2: and they want to see what happens. If you know,
- 49:38Speaker 2: Judge was truly going to be out for a while,
- 49:40Speaker 2: I think Jones would have would have gotten the call.
- 49:42Speaker 3: Uh.
- 49:43Speaker 2: So uh, you know, if you want to be bold
- 49:45Speaker 2: and you want to go, maybe try to play a
- 49:47Speaker 2: little backhand game at your your trade deadlines, and you know, say, oh,
- 49:50Speaker 2: Judge is out, I'm gonna sell sell low and see
- 49:53Speaker 2: you know what kind of offers you get. I'm not
- 49:55Speaker 2: I don't blame it. It could be kind of fun,
- 49:57Speaker 2: but I'm not concerned with with Judge.
- 50:00Speaker 3: She'll be back. He'll still hit another ten homers the rest
- 50:02Speaker 3: of the season.
- 50:03Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, I mean that might even be low.
- 50:06Speaker 2: To be honest, it might be low, but like I'm
- 50:08Speaker 2: given the benefit of the doubt, it might be ten
- 50:11Speaker 2: homers the rest of this month. And it's July and
- 50:14Speaker 2: we have one more day. So somehow he's gonna pull
- 50:16Speaker 2: it off.
- 50:18Speaker 1: Okay, let's move on to that next injury I was
- 50:20Speaker 1: talking about, because this one concerns me a little bit more.
- 50:22Speaker 1: We're talking outfielder from Atlanta, Ronald Lacunya Junior, pulled up yesterday.
- 50:28Speaker 1: I mean you could see it right when he was
- 50:29Speaker 1: chasing down this ball pulled up lane after. We've also
- 50:33Speaker 1: subsequently learned that, like he was telling Brian Snicker that
- 50:37Speaker 1: his leg was not feeling great over the past couple
- 50:39Speaker 1: of days and they still kept rolling them out, Which
- 50:41Speaker 1: that's a choice for somebody who's coming off of two
- 50:44Speaker 1: acl injuries and the Braves are currently sixteen games back
- 50:49Speaker 1: in the NL East, so he was left the game.
- 50:54Speaker 1: They were calling it Achilles tightness, which is not great,
- 50:57Speaker 1: especially when you're looking at just the rash of Achilles
- 51:00Speaker 1: injuries that we talked about when Griffin Canning went down
- 51:03Speaker 1: and kind of Tyler Haliburton also happened around that same
- 51:06Speaker 1: time from the Indiana Pacers, so it's kind of top
- 51:09Speaker 1: of mind as that came out. Subsequently, today they have
- 51:13Speaker 1: diagnosed him with a Grade one lower calf strain, which
- 51:18Speaker 1: still the Achilles I think, which it's a maybe creative
- 51:22Speaker 1: accounting for how they report that out to the media,
- 51:26Speaker 1: but this doesn't trend well I think for Acunya in
- 51:30Speaker 1: terms of I mean, he has been on fire absolutely
- 51:33Speaker 1: since he returned threeho six, four nine, five seventy seven
- 51:38Speaker 1: slash line. That's a one to seventy nine WRC plus,
- 51:40Speaker 1: which would be a career high fourteen homers over fifty
- 51:43Speaker 1: five games. But I thinking, if you're in a dynasty
- 51:48Speaker 1: keeper situation you have Acunya, you've got to be pretty.
- 51:55Speaker 3: Slick.
- 51:55Speaker 1: I think about how you divest yourself from this pretty quickly,
- 51:58Speaker 1: because I just don't like the way that the double
- 52:03Speaker 1: ACL injury, then you're talking another lower body injury here.
- 52:07Speaker 1: This is exactly how an Achilles gets torn. It's just
- 52:10Speaker 1: in terms of someone like like Akunya working his way
- 52:14Speaker 1: back from those multiple surgeries has changed probably gates and
- 52:20Speaker 1: how he just naturally does things, and just it's not
- 52:23Speaker 1: all synced up I think anymore mechanically for him. Just
- 52:28Speaker 1: think about Byron Buxton. Would you be drafting and holding
- 52:31Speaker 1: Byron Buxton as a first rounder going forward? Or I
- 52:36Speaker 1: mean we're about to talk about him, so like you
- 52:39Speaker 1: can maybe say that discussion for Byron Buckston a little bit.
- 52:41Speaker 1: But are you on the same page here with a
- 52:43Speaker 1: Kunio or are you maybe a little more optimistic about
- 52:46Speaker 1: what he could be going forward? As he let me
- 52:49Speaker 1: see when he turns twenty eight in December this year,
- 52:53Speaker 1: I think you have to.
- 52:55Speaker 2: I don't think you give him the Bayern Buxton treatment,
- 52:57Speaker 2: but I think you give him the Bryce Harper treatment,
- 53:00Speaker 2: which is not too different, which is can't say healthy,
- 53:04Speaker 2: but I hope you d h like is the is
- 53:07Speaker 2: the proper treatment here? Because I he's one of those
- 53:11Speaker 2: guys and there's nothing wrong with this that just goes
- 53:13Speaker 2: all out doesn't have an off switch. There's a whole
- 53:16Speaker 2: different conversation about the braves letting them play potentially hurt.
- 53:20Speaker 2: That's a whole different discussion. I'm not gonna I'm not
- 53:22Speaker 2: gonna go down. But he's a world class talent. There
- 53:25Speaker 2: is no question about that. He is a Hall of
- 53:28Speaker 2: Fame talent. I'm not saying he's gonna be in the
- 53:29Speaker 2: Hall of Fame, but the talent level could could deliver
- 53:33Speaker 2: that type of career. If he can't stay on the
- 53:35Speaker 2: field because he continued to has these lower body injuries.
- 53:39Speaker 2: It's gonna keep zapping the speed, it's gonna keep coming down.
- 53:43Speaker 2: He's gonna keep hitting power, but he can't get a field.
- 53:47Speaker 2: Another similar guy is Mike Trout. Guy again had a
- 53:50Speaker 2: longer run up to it. But like that's been the okay,
- 53:55Speaker 2: say achilles heel, but that's that's been the challenge there
- 54:00Speaker 2: is you know what point does this guy turn into
- 54:04Speaker 2: a more of a dh fragile body that you have
- 54:07Speaker 2: to try to get the games out of and Acuna
- 54:11Speaker 2: seems to be trending that way. So if people are
- 54:14Speaker 2: still treating him as a first, second, third rounder, that's
- 54:18Speaker 2: that's not correct. That's not correct. You talk about a
- 54:21Speaker 2: guy like Buxton, he's probably a top fifty hitter right now,
- 54:27Speaker 2: and I would say that before he got hurt, which
- 54:29Speaker 2: will cover him second here. But that's probably the peak
- 54:32Speaker 2: for a guy like like this is that top fifty hitters,
- 54:36Speaker 2: because you just can't rely on them. Fool me once,
- 54:39Speaker 2: s fool me twice, fool me three times. Like that's
- 54:41Speaker 2: where we're at. And even if for a guy that
- 54:43Speaker 2: likes the injured guys, three times is a little much.
- 54:46Speaker 3: And so we'll see.
- 54:48Speaker 2: Maybe that truly is a low calf strain and he's
- 54:51Speaker 2: back in the week. I don't think that's going to
- 54:53Speaker 2: be the case.
- 54:55Speaker 1: I don't think so either, especially considering you're looking at
- 54:59Speaker 1: just the long term viability of Ronald Lecunya. You know
- 55:03Speaker 1: he's signed actually isn't only through the end of next year.
- 55:07Speaker 1: That's a little crazy there are never mind it's there's
- 55:10Speaker 1: club options for twenty seven and twenty eight.
- 55:12Speaker 3: Yeah, there's like seventyb options on.
- 55:14Speaker 1: That, so they will certainly pick that up. But I mean,
- 55:16Speaker 1: you can already see he's on like a twelve stolen
- 55:20Speaker 1: base pace ten to twelve, So I mean he has
- 55:25Speaker 1: to hit three hundred to be worth a first round pick,
- 55:28Speaker 1: which the only other time he had done that before
- 55:30Speaker 1: this season was in twenty twenty three, which I think
- 55:33Speaker 1: we're also seeing a little bit of, like the repercussions
- 55:36Speaker 1: of him just going that hard in twenty twenty three
- 55:39Speaker 1: for that forty seventy where the wear and tear that
- 55:42Speaker 1: he put on his body is coming back. So yeah,
- 55:45Speaker 1: I'm really wary of a Kunya going forward because of
- 55:48Speaker 1: all these factors, just because like I think he will
- 55:52Speaker 1: go at the end of the first round and drafts
- 55:54Speaker 1: next year because people will see what he did in
- 55:59Speaker 1: the limited time this year and maybe give him a
- 56:01Speaker 1: pass on the stolen bases. But I'm not sure these
- 56:04Speaker 1: stolen bases are ever coming back.
- 56:07Speaker 2: Yeah, and I will I will own like I'm a
- 56:08Speaker 2: guy that has not draft, did not draft Aaron Judge
- 56:11Speaker 2: for a few years because he just seemed to always
- 56:13Speaker 2: be hurt.
- 56:14Speaker 3: Like I get that.
- 56:15Speaker 2: The upsides there, and when you get it right in
- 56:17Speaker 2: a Kunya or Harper or Judge of those kind of
- 56:20Speaker 2: guys end up getting healthy and they do their potential.
- 56:23Speaker 2: You feel kind of like an idiot because you were,
- 56:24Speaker 2: like I didn't get on that train but.
- 56:26Speaker 3: More often than not it does not go that way.
- 56:29Speaker 2: More often than not, you sacrifice your top pick in
- 56:33Speaker 2: a draft and you cannot recover from that. And so
- 56:36Speaker 2: you have to, especially early in drafts, you have to
- 56:39Speaker 2: consider the injury risk and you have to be willing
- 56:42Speaker 2: to take a little less upside for the certainty. I will,
- 56:47Speaker 2: I will probably every day. I will not take Aaron
- 56:50Speaker 2: Judge and I'll take Jose Ramirez. It's it is not
- 56:53Speaker 2: a fair fair trade. Their Judge is a better player.
- 56:56Speaker 2: If they play one hundred and sixty two games, that's
- 56:57Speaker 2: the guy that you want on your team. But I
- 57:00Speaker 2: don't trust Aaron Judge to play one hundred and sixty
- 57:02Speaker 2: two games. I don't trust lernd Kunya. I trust Jose Ramirez.
- 57:07Speaker 2: That's that's the way that I think you really need
- 57:08Speaker 2: to approach these first rounds and drafts.
- 57:10Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, yeah, I think that's fair. Okay, Well, let's
- 57:14Speaker 1: move on to the athletics, who must have acquired some
- 57:17Speaker 1: members of the Houston Astros medical staff because they've allowed
- 57:23Speaker 1: Jacob Wilson, their star rookie shortstop, to play with a
- 57:26Speaker 1: fractured forearm. They're calling it. I think it's technically like
- 57:29Speaker 1: a wrist like right where the wrist in the in
- 57:32Speaker 1: the forearm kind of all meld together. He's been playing
- 57:35Speaker 1: with it since before the All Star Break, and he
- 57:38Speaker 1: finally hit the il this week as they finally uncovered
- 57:43Speaker 1: what was ailing him. And it was a rough stretch
- 57:46Speaker 1: post All Star Break one O three, one thirty three,
- 57:49Speaker 1: two oh seven slash line. It's a negative sixteen and
- 57:52Speaker 1: thirty played appearances for Jacob Wilson. So not great, I
- 57:57Speaker 1: would say, in terms of the way that they've diagnosed
- 57:59Speaker 1: this and allowed him to really push his way through it. Certainly,
- 58:04Speaker 1: I think this is gonna ruin his Rookie of the
- 58:06Speaker 1: Year chances. Not on top of like Nick Kurtz just
- 58:10Speaker 1: kind of going bananas, which we also have had so
- 58:13Speaker 1: much to talk about, we've totally glossed over where we
- 58:16Speaker 1: gotta miss that one? Yeah? Who, so what are you
- 58:23Speaker 1: doing here with Jacob Wilson that Like there was chatter
- 58:27Speaker 1: on Reddit I saw this weekend of people really crashing
- 58:30Speaker 1: out and like trying to reassess his long term dynasty
- 58:35Speaker 1: keeper value and seeing if it had like kind of sunk.
- 58:38Speaker 1: And I don't know if those folks were too far
- 58:41Speaker 1: off base because like there's a lot of I don't
- 58:46Speaker 1: know how sticky this profile is, and so you, mister
- 58:50Speaker 1: top one hundred hitters, I'm hoping it can help me
- 58:52Speaker 1: out because like it's such an aggressive approach where he
- 58:57Speaker 1: doesn't walk, but he doesn't strike out because the contact
- 59:00Speaker 1: ability is so good out of Wilson, and so where
- 59:03Speaker 1: I have had him, like I've just kind of been
- 59:05Speaker 1: waiting for the other shoe to drop in terms of
- 59:09Speaker 1: just the babbup to kind of even itself out, and
- 59:13Speaker 1: just I did not expect double digit homers out of Wilson.
- 59:16Speaker 1: I was expecting pretty much a peer batting average with
- 59:18Speaker 1: some counting stats and a few stolen bases. Do you
- 59:21Speaker 1: think that like Jacob Wilson can continue this going forward?
- 59:25Speaker 1: Is there enough in the profile that makes him a
- 59:28Speaker 1: perennial contender for the batting league title?
- 59:33Speaker 3: Yeah? So this is I'm gonna take a victory lap.
- 59:36Speaker 3: We we love to be able to do this. We
- 59:38Speaker 3: usually don't get to. If you if you like to
- 59:41Speaker 3: go back.
- 59:41Speaker 2: In the in the Drugs of ras Ball write ups,
- 59:46Speaker 2: you can go back to June eighth, when I wrote
- 59:49Speaker 2: about Jacob Wilson, how you need to sell him? Uh,
- 59:52Speaker 2: and my comparison was Nico Horner is who you have
- 59:55Speaker 2: with Jacob Wilson, And uh, just for fun, let's go
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: back to June eighth and look at his stats since
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: that date, just because I like to take victory laps.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: Since June eighth, Jacob Wilson has two homers. He got
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: caught stealing twice. He tried twice, it didn't work so well.
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: He hit one ninety five. He Jacob Wilson, is a
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: bat first guy. He unfortunately he's his dad. He's Jack Wilson,
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: who will poke the ball get some hits. But when
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: you deliver a forty two WRC plus over about two
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: month time period, not a deal. And I get he
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: was hurt on the back of that, which was even worse.
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: But when you don't have speed, when you don't really
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: have power and the X of velocities aren't there, you have.
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: To be a really, really good.
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: Slap hitter and place the ball, hit a lot of
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: line drives. And that's that's the upside of Jack Wilson.
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: Jack Wilson, Jacob will sorry going back a little too
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: far showing some age, but I think the upside is
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: that he is a three hundred hitter, but barely anything else.
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: This is Luis Rayahs again, this is a Nico Horner
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: type scenario. And so I am de yeah without the steals,
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: and so like I'm out, I'm out on Jacob Wilson.
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: I have been for a while. And I think that.
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: Selling windows actually started to close is the hard thing
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: because he was so unbelievable early in the season. And
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: I'm going to make a card reference here. I remember
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: running across some of his cards at a card shop
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: earlier this season, just like some of the odd short
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: prints and shimmers and stuff like that. Somebody had clearly
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: opened like way too much of serious one and I
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: just they were in like a you know, ten cent
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: box or something like that. So I picked him up,
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: didn't think anything of it, went home, looked him up,
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: and they were going for like forty fifty bucks each,
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: and I'm like, wait a second. I didn't realize how
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: great he was playing like it didn't feel like it.
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: And I'm like, no, this ain't gonna last.
- 1:02:03Speaker 3: This it can last.
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: So I think, I mean, he had so much hype
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: because he hit the ground running, but it wasn't who
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: he was. Yeah, And I think, you know, we're We're
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: talking about a guy I don't know as a starty
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: middle infielder next year in leagues, And maybe that's harsh,
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: but I think it's true.
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: No, I think it's totally fair because if it's an
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: empty batting average, I think, like you said, it kind
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: of puts you in an arise type of boat. And
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: on top of it, it's a little bit if it
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: will be dictated by how long the Athletics stay in
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: Sacramento because that's where the homers are coming from as well.
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: Is that Yeah, it's really helping his case and it
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: just also boosts his overall counting stats when that lineup
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: is in Sacramento, in that minor league park and it
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: just plays so nice for bats. So that will be
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: a little bit of a factor too, And something that
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: you have to consider I think going forward for all
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: Athletics bats is like when do you pull the plug
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: on some of these players once we get a timeline
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: on when they're going to move out Sacramento. So something
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: to consider as you're looking at Wilson going forward. Okay,
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: we alluded to it. We're getting to it now. Outfielder
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: Byron Buxton hurt. Surprisingly this time it's a ribca bitch injury,
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: a inflammation of the rib cage, which.
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: Rib cartilage inflammation and irritation. I'm like, that's a new one.
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: Yeah, this is like this is a little bit like
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: the Tristan Cassas like rib cage injury too, where you're
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: just like, this is not great considering. That's all baseball
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: is with hitting is just like moving your rib cage around.
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: You know, you're twisting, you're turning. And so Buxton, I mean,
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: he was looking like he was on his way to
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: playing his only third season of one hundred plus games
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: in eleven years. I don't know if he's gonna make
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: it now at this point, it is a two eighty
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: two three three five sixty one slash line. It's a
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: one forty six three BRC plus. I mean he was
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: a one forty one WRC plus last year. That he
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: is a one forty WRC plus hitter. The question here
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: is whether or not you can get fourigner at bats
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: that played appearances out of him. So is this just
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: who Byron Buckson? Is Are you maybe looking to thread
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: the needle of picking him up in dynasty keeper leagues
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: or is this just uh, it is who? He is,
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: and this is why he's not much more valuable player
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: in fantasy than he turns out to be.
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: I think that this is it is probably not what
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: you're expecting to say, but I think this is actually
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: the Buxton finally being vible and fantasy, which is I
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: feel like the hype has finally met the divergence of
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: the injury.
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: Risk and this is who he is. But I feel like, uh, as.
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: I read reports, I'm not actually concerned, like a costless level,
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: Like I think it's not that bad and they're just
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: babing the guy, and I think that's what he has
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: always needed. Is like anytime bucks And wakes up like
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: his pinky toe herding, you just got to sit them
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: for the day, and that's who you're gonna have. And
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: I think the market's now, you know, really baked that
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: into the price. Like I moved him up before the
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: injury like nine spots in my top one hundred rankings
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: to forty five, and he's hitting like a top twenty guy.
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: And I think it's just so baked into the price
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: right now that I'm actually slightly intrigued in dynasty formats
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: because if the price is finally maybe gone so much
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: the other way that if he is able to squeeze
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: in one hundred games and he's able to do what
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: he's done this year, I'm actually getting that for probably
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: like a top eighty hitter price because people just don't
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: want to play it and so not like an advisable
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: strategy to do that, because it is a little bit
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: playing with fire. But this is different than drafting Ronald
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: Coue at the in the first round. This is Byron
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: Bucks in the tenth or fifteenth or something like that.
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: Like it's it's a much different discussion. So I'm I'm
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: a little bit more intrigued here just because I think
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: the price is finally baking in the injuries, and I
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: think it might be making in so much that it's
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: actually a slight by an opportunity in dynasty formats.
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: Yeah, Okay, I think that's totally fair. Okay. Next injury
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: is to our boy, Kansas City starter Chris Bubich, who
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: has hit the shelf and is going to be out
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: for the rest of the season with a strained rotator cuff.
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: I can't even believe that it's come to this point, Like,
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: I don't know what the Royals were doing with him
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: who he was an All Star, and through the end
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: of May it was fantastic. Sixty eight and a third
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: innings of a one forty five ERA nine point two
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: K nine. This is the Chris Boubach we thought that
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: he could be. From June on, it was a different story.
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: Forty eight innings of a four thirteen RA, the K
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: rate had dropped to eight point six, walk right up
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: to three point six, and and he in total this
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: season threw one hundred and sixteen and third innings after
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: throwing thirty and a third last year coming off of
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: a Tommy John surgery in twenty twenty three. The Royals
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: should have been tapering these innings a long time ago
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: for Chris Boubach. I had kind of been like preparing
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: for that where they would start like stretching him out,
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: sending them down, resting him here there. But they just
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: kept firing him like six seven innings day after day,
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: or turn after turning the rotation. And now they might
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: have wrecked him because like rotator cuffs are no bueno.
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: And so in that head head league I was eluding earlier,
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: it's a mad rush to try to find starting pitching
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: and there are keepers that he would have Bubich was
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: gonna be one of my keepers. I just outright dropped
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: him because I don't want to deal with a rotator
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: cuff injury for him going into the offseason. What are
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: you doing in situations like that where Boobitch is probably
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: if you're in a keeper dynasty situation, you probably have
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: him at a very nice value. But now you're talking
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: a really, really threatening injury here for the left hander.
- 1:08:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it.
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: It is a very wide array of outcomes here, and
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: I think it's a wider array of decisions. If you're
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: in a dynasty format, you got to hold this guy.
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: He's looked great, You have him so ridiculously cheap, but
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: nobody's gonna give you anything for him. In a keeper
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: format where you're generally probably keeping just a handful of guys,
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: you've got to let him go, like you you aren't
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: going to see him back this season, very very likely
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: because if you for two things, if you do really
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: really poor management on the Royalist part, if you see
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: him the rest of the season, and to their rushing
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: him back like it's just he's got too many Indians
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: and rotator cuff injuries are there. They're a long tough recovery.
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: Like I think shoulder injuries are almost becoming worse to
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: agree that elbow injuries from a pitching you know, expected
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: outcome perspective, they just they're not as as projectable as
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: what some other arm injuries are. And so I think
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: you're redraft, you're done with them. I think keeper with
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: not too many keepers, Uh, you're you're done with them.
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: Dynasty or you know, quasi dynasty like an ot new
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: type format. I think if you've got them cheap, that
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: you can you can hold on to him, or at
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: least hold on to to make a decision. But most
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: likely this is the this is you know, he's squarely
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: in my uh, you know target next year as the
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: kind of called the Kyle Brads and the Shane Bieber's
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: and the brain of wood drifts of this year that
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: you just throw the back of your your your injured
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: listen to see what happens later.
- 1:09:42Speaker 3: That's that's where he's dropped to.
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: And that's really really unfortunate because he was so so
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: good when healthy.
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's uh, those are all fair takes. Okay,
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: let's move over to Detroit, where we've got a couple
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: of pictures to talk about. First, Reese Olsen pretty much
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: in the same boat as Chris Boubich where he has
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: a shoulder strain, so they're shutting him down. He should
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: be out for the rest the regular season. There's a
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: little chatter that he might be able to make a
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: bet for the postseason, but I just don't see how
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: Detroit risks the twenty five year old's arm. After he's
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: pitched a three fifteen RA over sixty eight and two
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: thirds innings this season, he's looked relatively good. To replace them,
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: they went to the Twins Pilford, one of those giant pitchers,
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: the six foot five Chris Paddock, who then pitched today,
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: looked really dang good. One earned run over six innings
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: with five k's, no walks. He's been really limiting those walks.
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: So what are you doing here with Reese Olsen going
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: forward in keeper situations? A lah Chris Bubich and any
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: interest in Chris Paddock.
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I think Olson's a very very similar as Boobach here,
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: maybe a slight ticked down in just my interest long term,
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: just because he's not as a dynamic picture from a
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: striking perspective. He's already got a little bit of downside
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: because he's not He's not a strikeout per any type
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: of guy, a little more risk in the profile there.
- 1:11:13Speaker 3: Paddock, on the other hand, like this is a tough one.
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: Like you know, Minnesota has not seemed to get the
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: most out of their pictures and Detroit, I don't know.
- 1:11:24Speaker 3: If they have or not.
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: It seems like some guys thrive, some guys don't, and
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: so like, I don't know what to what to expect here.
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: So it's Paddock's more of a sit and watch. To
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: your point, I think delivered a really, really good line today,
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: but he hasn't really shown that throughout the whole season,
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: so things will get thin towards the end of the season.
- 1:11:48Speaker 3: There's probably worse.
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: Options than Paddock, but I think he's still in streaming
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: territory at this point.
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: Yeah, And I was just looking up to see if
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: they changed his pitch mix at all, just to see
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: if anything kind of popped out, and it looks like
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: they did. So they're having him throw his change up
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: a tick more and his four seam a tick less.
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: They pretty much scrapped Chris paddock slider today and had
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: him go pretty much fastball change and curve. So anything
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: there that maybe you see in terms of the pitches
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: I just listened off there that you like in terms
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: of that fastball, that change up or that curveball from
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: Chris Paddock, that makes you a little bit more interested
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: because he was with the Twins firing that slider as
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: his third pitch eleven percent of the time and Detroit
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: scrapped it.
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that that's the intriguing piece is if
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: I always love a pitcher when they go to a
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: new spot and they get a pitch mixed change immediately,
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: that means the team acquiring saw something and things that
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: they found something and they're coaching to that. So it's
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: always slightly more intrigued when you see that early success.
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: I still don't think there's enough underlying uh nastiness and
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: Chris patics profile to really jump on. But you know,
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: that might move him from streamer to you know, keep
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: him on the back into the roster type of guy.
- 1:13:18Speaker 3: But I still I still need to see more.
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: But that that like that gives me hope for a
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: guy like Chris Baddock. But again, the Tigers, I just
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: I don't know, I don't know, I don't know what
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: we're gonna get it's it's good that they're trying something
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: that's that's better than not.
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, I think that's very fair. Okay, let's go
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: to Atlanta where we've got some more picture you're shuffling. First,
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: they acquired Eric Fetti and Carlos Carrasco, as that pitching
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: staff has totally fallen apart behind Streider, it's now Fetti, Carrasco,
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: Joey Wentz, and Bryce Elder. So uh why It's also
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: fascinating that Brian Snicker was trying to play Ronald la
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: Kunya through any injury. Because it is over in Atlanta
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: for this season, we're not going to talk about Eric Fetti.
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: I think he's just eating innings to try to get
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: the Braves to the end of the season. Our focus
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: here is actually who he was kind of brought in
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: to replace, because this has actually happened. I feel like
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: a few times now this year where a player kind
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: of has like vague elbow inflammation, it doesn't sound too serious,
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: they put him on the el and then boom, it's
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: a sixty dayil. That's what has happened here to Grant Holmes,
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: who another guy who honestly just of total mismanagement of
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: the innings, where he was already up to one hundred
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: and fifteen innings after throwing sixty eight and a third.
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: Last year in twenty twenty three, he'd only thrown a
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: total of sixty one. So this has been a guy
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: who they just started throwing every fifth day the way
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: they did with Chris Bubac, where of course he was
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: gonna blow out like it was only a matter of time.
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: Things are not. It doesn't sound great because with the
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: sixty dail Stent Holmes is probably for the season. Who
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: I mean, he's been much better of late, got that
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: era underneath four the K nine is just at just
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: a tick under ten. At nine point six, went from
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: a guy who I was totally uninterested in to being
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: somebody who I was intrigued by. Now I might be
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: uninterested again because I'm not totally sure about what his
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: elbow looks like. So what are you doing with homes
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: going forward?
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I would say I think your rose clear glasses
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: coming from the waiver wire columns. With the grand Holmes
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: I probably wasn't too interested before. Maybe again that streamer
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: steamer category, the control is necessarily there. Pedigree wasn't there.
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: The back end numbers beyond the whiffs weren't really there,
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: and so you can kind of squint and see something interesting,
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: but not something that was really reliable. Now that we've
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: got an injury with it, I've just it. I've written
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: them off. I'm moving on and not too interest and
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: Grant Holm, I'm putting him into the Bryce elder Braves category,
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: which is this was fun while it lasted.
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: Let's move on. Yeah, I think that's fair. Okay, we
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: do have a breaking trade since we've started talking and potting.
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: Oh no, Chicago Cubs have picked up Michael Soroka, so
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: intriguing to see where he'll slot into that team as
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: either a relief piece or honestly, he's probably going to
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: enter the back of that rotation in lieu of Ben
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: Brown and or Kate Horton, or maybe they the Cubs,
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: after listening to us talk about how these other teams
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: have blown out their arms, are going to start watching
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: those innings for Horton and Brown going forward. So I
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: know you've been a fan of Michael Soroka here over
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: this past year. Things have been up and down in
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: terms of He'll have a few good starts, rattle off
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: a bunch of k's, then regress, and so what do
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: you think he can be with the Cubs? Is it
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: a more intriguing arm now that he's on a much
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: better team.
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it is a tick up for for
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: Mike Soroka here. I've I've been intrigued because you know,
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: since returning from some some injury issues the last few years, uh,
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: the strikeouts have jumped up, which wasn't really his profile
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: when when he was coming up in the league. Control
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: seems to have improved, and so just a better overall profile.
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: I know the e RA is not too exciting at
- 1:17:22Speaker 2: four a seven for the year, but some of his
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: underlying metrics are are much much lower.
- 1:17:27Speaker 3: His FIP was low for wars, his.
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: XDRA is actually mid threes, and so he's actually pitched
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: much better than what the overall results look like. And
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: you've you've seen it in you know, spurts where he
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: will just all of a sudden go six innings, two hits,
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: you know seven k's something like that.
- 1:17:47Speaker 3: Not necessarily a guy that goes terribly deep into games.
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: I do think the the Nationals were kind of babing
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: him to to to a degree the last few weeks
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: trying to get to the trade deadline to to make
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: a move with him, and so at the same time,
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: I think that the the Cubs just can use and
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: abuse him like that's that he's you know, a twenty
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: seven year old.
- 1:18:10Speaker 3: Uh here, he's he'll be you know, be twenty eight
- 1:18:13Speaker 3: here in just a few days.
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: Uh birthday, Yeah, happy birthday, Michael Soroka, go play in Chicago.
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: But uh, I actually he's got to be thrilled with
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: that he's got an opportunity to to be in a
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: race here. But I think he's definitely intriguing. He's a
- 1:18:29Speaker 2: step above streamer for me, definitely back in. Maybe not
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: a true start all the time type of guy, but
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: I'm really interested to see if the Cubs make any
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: make any tweaks with him here and really see, you know,
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: is there was there a big return on this one.
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: Han't had a chance to dig in since breaking news here.
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: But for for guys Schroka, I expected to be kind
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: of a few, you know, further off mid level guys. Uh,
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: maybe one top thirty prospect for the team.
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: Nope, You're right, it is for Christian Franklin and Ronnie
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: Crewe's who I will admit I am not familiar with
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: either of them. So yeah, let's see if there's information
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: here on m'll be trade rumors about them come through
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: for me Mark Polishuk And of course it's not loading
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: for me very well because everybody else is trying to refresh.
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: Rodny Cruz was number thirteen on the in the Cubs system,
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: and Franklin does not appear that he Oh, Franklin's fourteen,
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: so number thirteen and fourteen prospects. I think the thing
- 1:19:35Speaker 2: you have to recognize with Franklin he is a twenty
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: five year old at Triple A.
- 1:19:42Speaker 3: Where's Cruz as an eighteen year old and rookie ball.
- 1:19:45Speaker 2: So you couldn't have it any further offict their lottery ticket,
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: but it, you know, it looks like, yeah, Franklin is
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: is hasn't really done a whole lot there at Triple A.
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: So it does seem like kind of more of a
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: salary dump slash, give us a lottery ticket for long
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: term there in Ronnie Cruz.
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, well I gave you a little bit of
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: a pre from the injuries, but we're going right back now.
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: We've got we've got shoulder discomfort for closer in Baltimore.
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: Felix Bautista not at a great time, came right before
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: the trade deadline. I think they would have dealt him
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: because things have just been not trending well. Even though
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: the surface level stats have been great for Bautista. You know,
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: a thirteen K nine two point six e RA nineteen
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: saves for a pretty crummy team, but the walk rate
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: was starting to get to six per nine, and so
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: you can kind of see where this could unravel pretty quickly.
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: Also kind of lines up that if the shoulder wasn't
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: feeling quite as great, that the ability to throw accurately
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: was quite there. So thoughts here on Felix bautistaff.
- 1:20:57Speaker 3: Yeah, this is concerning. Like Europe's right, he would have
- 1:21:00Speaker 3: been traded.
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: His stuff is still absolutely nasty, but he truly does
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: not know where it's going. You know, He'll look at
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: his baseball Savan page is really fun. It's like alread
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: except for the one percentile and walk rate, so nobody
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: can hit it, but nobody needs to swing in it either,
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: so that that does make it a bit of a challenge.
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: But his era and things like that have actually kind
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: of covered up It's been really kind of a rough
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: season for Bautista coming off Tommy John you know, last
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: last few years recovering. We were hoping for more this year,
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: and I don't think we can expect him back anytime soon.
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: I think they'll probably try to get him back before
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: the end of the season, just to see what they
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: what they got and decide, you know, how much they're
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: gonna deal with through arbitration things like that. They probably
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: would have traded him in the off season if they're able
- 1:21:51Speaker 2: to get him back and healthy as what I would expect.
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: Yep, I think that's fair. Let's focus on the Baltimore
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: bullpen a little bit, because they did trade away the
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: two p is that actually might have been the closer
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: in lieu of Felix Bautista between Greg Rissoto and yesterday
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: they traded between a doubleheader. They traded Sir Anthony Dominguez
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: across the Diamond to the Blue Jays. So there's a
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: pretty good clip of Dominguez walking back across the bullpens
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: in his new Blue Jays gear, passed his old teammates,
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: and it's just kind of one of those fun things
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: that really only happens in Baseball, the player that he
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: was actually traded for to Jirron Botts Brown in Triple A.
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: The those teams between Buffalo and Norfolk were also playing
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: each other. I believe it was. That's the level there. No,
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: it's actually a double A, my bad, so between Bowie
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: and I don't know the Toronto Double A team off
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: the top of my head. But he also did the
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: same thing where he was like he had traveled with
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: the Blue Jays Double A team and then ended up
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: on the Bowie Bays socks by the end of the day.
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: So pretty fun stuff there. Any names intrigue you there
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: between Jennie your Canoe Andrew Kiddridge Corporate Martin got his
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: first career saved yesterday just through the chaos and the doubleheader.
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: Kegan Aiken's hanging out there. Lots of names to maybe
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: target here for I mean, the Baltimore team's gonna sell
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: a little bit more, but they've been playing much better of.
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: Like yeah, so, I you know, if I'm been picking name,
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: there's probably not a sexy name. I think most people
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: would say y your Canoe. Granted he gave up five
- 1:23:30Speaker 2: runs today and took the loss against the Blue Jays,
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: I really think that the guy to look at there
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: is Andrew Kittridge. I think he's he's the best arm
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: in that bullpen, and honestly, he's he's been a really
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: good arm for like a number of years, one of
- 1:23:47Speaker 2: the most probably reliable like middle relievers there is in
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: the game, which is like the most unassuming and coming
- 1:23:55Speaker 2: from Tampa Bay for never few years like is just
- 1:23:58Speaker 2: you know, patting to Tampa Bay unassuming players, but just
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: whenever he's healthy, he keeps the walk down, he strikes
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: some guys out, absolutely ground ball machine, and he just
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: gets the job done. So I think Andrew Kittridge is
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: really the guy that I would be most intrigued with
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: this this team here. He did pitch today as well.
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: He got a whole inning in, struck out a guy
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: while putting down the down the side, and I will
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: say when he did that, it was in the ninth,
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: ninth inning, trying to keep a one run game. So
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: at this point, I think Kittridge is the is the guy.
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree there, So assuming he sticks with the
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: team through the deadline, because he is, He's got a
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: club option for next year at ten million, which would
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: be easy to decline. But a pretty intriguing arm of
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: three fifty six ERA with a nine point two K
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: nine over thirty and a third innings this year.
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: Yeah, this is the kind of guy that, like you
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: threw up from a fab bit or something like a
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: massive fab bib to tight that you regret it, say
- 1:25:01Speaker 2: when he gets traded. So this is is such an
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: interesting time right now. Is like you want to get
- 1:25:06Speaker 2: the first move advantage on these guys like Kittridge, which
- 1:25:08Speaker 2: I don't think is like his household of the name,
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: but should absolutely be the closure in my opinion.
- 1:25:14Speaker 3: You just want to kind of grab him and move on.
- 1:25:15Speaker 2: But you don't want to waste all your five dollars
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: all night that when you could just completely be gone
- 1:25:19Speaker 2: in twenty four hours.
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: Okay, let's move on to our next injury. We've got
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: San Francisco Giants starter at Land and Roupe hit the
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: il with a sore elbow. He's been really good in
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: July four starts one point eight ERA over twenty innings
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: with twenty one to eight strikeout to walk. Ratio has
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: also come with a forty five percent ground ball rate
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: that he's kind of patented for. Great news here is
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: he actually threw off a flat ground today, so he's
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: on his way back, so should be back next week.
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: I think I just kind of want to call that
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: out because when I originally put this piece of news
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: onto our rundown yet today, I was ready to lament
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: the loss of land and route from our player pool.
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: But now I think I'm suggesting probably to stash him
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: away if he's going to be back pretty soon. Seems
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: like a situation where again kind of like those players
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: with Bubitch and others where we were talking about just
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: abusing those arms too much. The Giants are probably finding
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: a way to taper Rup, as he's already rapidly closing
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: in on a career high in innings.
- 1:26:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I think you're right.
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: I'm going to reiterate with a sayment I made earlier
- 1:26:31Speaker 2: general principle as I ignore all Giants starters, and so
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: even though the things look interesting recent trends under the covers,
- 1:26:39Speaker 2: it's it's kind of iffy.
- 1:26:41Speaker 3: I've just written them off. Whether or not I'm wrong
- 1:26:43Speaker 3: or right, I don't really care. I have not. I'm
- 1:26:45Speaker 3: not playing in that pool anymore.
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: I hear you. Okay, Well, another guy with a bum
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: elbow after throwing a boatload of innings after an injured season.
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: We've got left hander Brandon Walter for the Houston Astros,
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: who at this point is up to just over one
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: hundred total innings between Triple A and the Majors after
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: missing all of twenty twenty four with an injury, so
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: he was placed in the eel. He's been really good.
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: He's been one of my favorite suggestions I've had of
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: late with a three three five RA over fifty three
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: and two thirds innings, eight point seven K nine less
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: than a walk pern inning a point sixty seven K
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: or walk per nine. That's why I meant less than
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: one walk per nine, not per inning. That would be
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: not as impressive. You would hope it happens.
- 1:27:38Speaker 3: I feel as Batista could do that exactly.
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: And so this is another guy who I think it's
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: it'll be fascinating to watch how Houston handles him because
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: they have done a little better of this compared to
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: what you know the Royals have just done with Chris Bubach.
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: So I think it's actually an intriguing by opportunity and
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: kind of keeper Dinas situations for the twenty eight Walter.
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: Twenty eight year old Walter what do you think?
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I think you're right, because like his
- 1:28:08Speaker 2: underlying numbers look really really solid. I love a guy
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: that can control, have the control, and knows what he's doing.
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: There's just a lot to like about this profile, and
- 1:28:18Speaker 2: he's it's not just you know, what he's done with
- 1:28:20Speaker 2: the majors this year, but he seems to have have
- 1:28:23Speaker 2: done these same things across the minor league, just you
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: know here and there. You know, every guy gets a
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: little staple size, small sample size of the miners, but overall,
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: he's he's actually there's probably more strikeout upside than what
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: he's actually shown at this point. And the control probably
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: not as good as the point six seven walk per nine,
- 1:28:44Speaker 2: but still probably better than what he's done. He's he's
- 1:28:48Speaker 2: had a three thirty five e RA and all the
- 1:28:51Speaker 2: metrics say it's it's probably about right, and I think
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: that there's like even more behind that.
- 1:28:57Speaker 3: He had really like one blow up.
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: Game if I recall on his game log this year,
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: and if you exclude that, actually he had kind of
- 1:29:07Speaker 2: kind of called two. But he gave up seven runs
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: and six innings on June twenty first, and then he
- 1:29:13Speaker 2: gave five and five on the July third, but those
- 1:29:18Speaker 2: were the only two games he gave up more than
- 1:29:19Speaker 2: two earned runs across this entire season. So seven other
- 1:29:23Speaker 2: games he was two earned runs are less. And that's
- 1:29:27Speaker 2: a total of four walks this year against fifty two strikeouts.
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: So it's actually really intriguing. It's kind of given me
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: a little one hundred brown vibes over there for Houston,
- 1:29:39Speaker 2: where a few bad starts kind of sour people, and
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: not to look under the covers. I'm not nearly as
- 1:29:46Speaker 2: excited as as what I was. I'm a big hundred
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: round truther. I love him, but I think that there's
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: a lot, a lot of injury here and it's just
- 1:29:56Speaker 2: going on to the radar, and so I probably even
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: until we were talking out of here, the more and
- 1:30:00Speaker 2: more I look, I just I like what I see.
- 1:30:02Speaker 3: So, uh yeah, maybe just a.
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: Buy an opportunity right now, as long as the injury,
- 1:30:10Speaker 2: uh isn't such a big deal.
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: Yes, I think that's uh. I think we're pretty much
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: un locked up there. Okay, We've just got a few
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: more injuries, I promise next one, because they're all pretty
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: major like these have been. It's been a crazy week.
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: Next one, we have hamstring injuries, sending Jack Kaglione to
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: the injured list. Uh, it's been rough for the rookie
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: out of Florida, Jack Tani one forty seven two o
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: five twot eighty. That is a twenty nine WRC plus
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: with that slash line, and it's not been strikeouts. The
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: strikeouts are fine at twenty one point one percent. The
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: issue is this is actually something why I wasn't quite
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: I know that we really hyped in hype Jack Tani,
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: like when he came up and stuff, but like I
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: was not into him the way that I was with Kurtz,
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: where like there was no flaw I could find in Kurts.
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: Because this is something where Eric Longen can actually flag
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: this pretty quickly from fangrafts when he was ranking Jack Kagliona.
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: Is just the way that his swing works. It leads
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: to a lot of ground balls. There's not a lot
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: of time where he leads that barrel in the zone.
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: So it's resulted in a fifty percent ground ball rate
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: right now, which everything else looks good except for that.
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: So is that just like the one flaw that Jack
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: Twani needs to fix, or there are other parts of
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: the profile that you see that are kind of worrisome
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: for you. I mean, he was only a twenty two
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: year old, so there's plenty of runway for him to
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: turn it around. But obviously there are flaws that have
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: been exploited at the major league level.
- 1:31:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not terribly concerned. It's it I say that
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: I wan to say. But it's also the Brian Hayes
- 1:32:01Speaker 2: conversation we had earlier. Like, one thing that you really
- 1:32:04Speaker 2: need to work through is because you cannot survive in
- 1:32:06Speaker 2: this league by putting the ball on the ground half
- 1:32:09Speaker 2: the time as a power hitter, that just doesn't work
- 1:32:12Speaker 2: unless you get some crazy, crazy luck. And then in
- 1:32:15Speaker 2: the miners, he's a home run for fly ball of
- 1:32:18Speaker 2: like a third, Like it was one out of every
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: three fly balls just flying out of the park.
- 1:32:22Speaker 3: Well, that that.
- 1:32:23Speaker 2: Can work with a you know, mid forties round ball rate,
- 1:32:27Speaker 2: and that looks pretty gush starning good on the on
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: the stat page, but like that's that's like air judge
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: Kyle Rally territory to be able to maintain those kind
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: of kind of metrics, And so you don't expect a
- 1:32:39Speaker 2: guy to do that. And so if you have a
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: down time, this is this is what's going to happen.
- 1:32:44Speaker 2: So I still think he's an incredible talent. I you know,
- 1:32:48Speaker 2: Kurt struggled to beginning. Lots of lots of young talented
- 1:32:52Speaker 2: power hitters struggle, and I think he's got a lot more.
- 1:32:55Speaker 2: But I think there is that warning sign, like, let's
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: watch this piece because if if that remains, it's gonna
- 1:33:02Speaker 2: capas upside. It's absolutely Capa's upside. You know, there is
- 1:33:06Speaker 2: you know, kind of a It's kind of like the
- 1:33:09Speaker 2: launch angle was the trend a few years ago now,
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: like the long batpath through the zone is kind of
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: a trend now that you're seeing is trying to keep
- 1:33:15Speaker 2: it in there and that's just not what jack TONI
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: likes to do.
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: Yeah, Okay, next injury we have is actually a guy
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: who is working his way back. He's out on a
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: rehab assignment right now, should be back this weekend. It
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: is catcher Alejandro Kirk from the Toronto Blue Jays, went
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: on the Seven Day Concussion. I l I mostly just
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: kind of wanted to bring this up because we haven't
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: ever really given Alejandro Kirkis followers on this podcast, and
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: I kind of wanted to see what you think about him.
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: It's been a fantastic season for the twenty six year
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: old three oh four three sixty one four thirteen slash line.
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: That's a one to seventeen WRC plus, an eight point
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: four percent k rate versus a nine point eight percent
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: I messed it up. Eight point four percent walk rate
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: versus a nine point eight percent k rate. Seven homers.
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: This is the guy that we were expecting back in
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: twenty twenty three, coming off of that fantastic twenty twenty
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: two season for Kirk when he put up fourteen homers
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: with a one twenty nine WRC plus. Is it somebody
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: that you trust going forward as your catcher one?
- 1:34:20Speaker 2: I think it's something I trust going for is my
- 1:34:22Speaker 2: catcher one? But barely, you know, I think he the
- 1:34:25Speaker 2: lineup he's in is not really the greatest supporting staff
- 1:34:29Speaker 2: at this point. It's there's there's spots of highlight there.
- 1:34:33Speaker 2: He is a true true catcher. So he's not getting
- 1:34:36Speaker 2: his you know, full time. He's he's getting days off
- 1:34:39Speaker 2: here and there. And you know what, I I think
- 1:34:44Speaker 2: I've got him like right at the top ten twelve
- 1:34:47Speaker 2: type catcher. He is hitting three or four this year,
- 1:34:51Speaker 2: but that is with a three twenty babeup, which is
- 1:34:54Speaker 2: well well above his career average. You know, you know,
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: if we were talking about the biggest burden the league
- 1:35:00Speaker 2: and he's running a three twenty babait.
- 1:35:01Speaker 3: But I'm like, yeah, I believe it. For fun, We're
- 1:35:04Speaker 3: gonna play our game, you know, the game. What is
- 1:35:07Speaker 3: Aljandro Kirk's sprint speed? You know, I'm gonna set you up
- 1:35:11Speaker 3: for this one three twenty babit this year? Uh he's
- 1:35:14Speaker 3: is he sneak? Is he sneaky fast? This is the
- 1:35:16Speaker 3: five eight two forty five pound Alejandro Kirk.
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: I don't think he is. I think it's like a
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: twenty three percent percent tile sprint speed.
- 1:35:27Speaker 3: You were so close if you got rid of the three,
- 1:35:29Speaker 3: it's two. Okay.
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: You had me worried there for a little bit. That
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: was a good That was a good trick.
- 1:35:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:35:37Speaker 2: So Alejandro Kirk is not the speediest guy. So I
- 1:35:40Speaker 2: think that there's a little movement in the bat average
- 1:35:43Speaker 2: that it will drop down. I don't think he's gonna
- 1:35:45Speaker 2: hit two fifty, but I do think that he's more
- 1:35:49Speaker 2: of like a two seventy.
- 1:35:50Speaker 3: Two eighty hitter.
- 1:35:52Speaker 2: I'm gonna poke ten to fifteen home runs and have
- 1:35:55Speaker 2: a handful accounting stats, which that's a decent back end
- 1:35:59Speaker 2: number one catcher. But I'm not overly excited because Ketcher
- 1:36:03Speaker 2: has become a lot deeper this year with that young
- 1:36:05Speaker 2: krup cup crop coming up. So if somebody's enamored with Kirk,
- 1:36:10Speaker 2: I think you can replace him without too much headache.
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I think he'll be intriguing to see what his
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: draft price is, because like he could either be I
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: could see going both ways, where like people see this
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: and project more growth and he gets over inflated, or
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: people who were invested over the past couple of years
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: on him remember being burnt and he kind of falls
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: and then becomes a huge value pick for number one
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: catcher just because he's not losing that job in Toronto
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: anytime soon. So somebody to keep an eye on going forward.
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: In Alejandro Kirk. Okay, we've got one last injury, and
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: I know this one. I'm stabbing you right through the
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: heart with it, because honestly, this happened just right after
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: we talked about him on one of our podcasts that
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: like roughly around the same time Travis went down with
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: what they were calling triceps tightness. And that's another one
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: of those injuries where I'm not sure I've ever heard
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: of a pitcher going through triceps tightness and it ever
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: working out well. So we have Travis Kor, who was
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: absolutely dominating the minor leagues. He had lost eighty five
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: innings in single A with a two thirty three run
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: to average ERA, a thirty nine point two percent k rate.
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: It's just like bananas, bananas, nasty stuff. When we talked
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: about him roughly a month ago, we were already kind
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: of projected, do they possibly bring him up at the
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: end of season? Tommy John surgery gonna keep him out certainly,
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: probably through the end of twenty twenty six at this point,
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: because at this.
- 1:37:47Speaker 3: It's it's it's a two year deal.
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: Yeah, Washington's got no reason to rush him. They're going
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: to try to get what they can out of Travis
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: Decorr going forward. So what do you do with arms
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: like this where I mean, I know for you he
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: was moving to probably like your number one pitching prospect.
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: Is it worth hanging on all the way to twenty
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: twenty seven for you?
- 1:38:06Speaker 3: I don't think it is.
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: You know, maybe a dynasty format, like because I he
- 1:38:11Speaker 2: is like the number one, but like This is kind
- 1:38:12Speaker 2: of the Ricky Tieteman type of thing where he was
- 1:38:15Speaker 2: up to that point and then injuries, but the fall,
- 1:38:18Speaker 2: and so I think you got to be cautious. Like
- 1:38:20Speaker 2: I absolutely love Trevis Sikora. I think he was, like
- 1:38:25Speaker 2: you said, he's twenty number one. To me, he was
- 1:38:27Speaker 2: the number one pitching prospect in the minors. He was
- 1:38:31Speaker 2: better than almost anybody else out there. The age that
- 1:38:34Speaker 2: he was, the levels he was hitting, the just the
- 1:38:37Speaker 2: stuff that he was exhibiting. The strikeout numbers were incredible,
- 1:38:42Speaker 2: like they were a world class compared to his peers,
- 1:38:46Speaker 2: and so and it wasn't just like that piece. He
- 1:38:49Speaker 2: had showed control, he showed the ability to keep it
- 1:38:52Speaker 2: on the ground. He did all the good things. And
- 1:38:54Speaker 2: so it is really disappointing to see to see this,
- 1:38:57Speaker 2: you know, you kind of look at this as this
- 1:38:59Speaker 2: the all young pitchers need to get Tommy John Let's
- 1:39:02Speaker 2: get out of the way and come back. So I'm
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: a little bit more willing, but in most leagues right now,
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: unless is a deep dynasty league where I would hold him,
- 1:39:10Speaker 2: I'm looking at this with more of like a hey,
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: kind of get him off the rosher for right now,
- 1:39:15Speaker 2: I'll probably come back next year and Adam on you know,
- 1:39:18Speaker 2: back of rosters things like that and more keeper dynasty
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: to leagues. But I'm looking more of a twenty twenty
- 1:39:26Speaker 2: seven pick up and stash type type of thing.
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: Okay, yep, I think that's all very fair. So yeah,
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: wish him the best in his recovery and hopefully we
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: get to see it happen at the big leagues because
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: there was some electric stuff. Okay, Well, we're gonna wrap
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: on kind of a sad note. Unfortunately, we have news
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: that Ryan Sandberg, Hall of Famer from the Chicago Cubs,
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: passed away just yesterday on Tuesday. So he was sixty
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: five years old, had been battling prostate cancer for quite
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: a while and really ultimately way too young to be going.
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: So certainly a fan favorite in Chicago. This is not
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: the most Cubs pro Cubs podcast you'll find out there,
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: and between us both being Cardinals fans and I also
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: my secondary team is the White Sox, and even though
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: I lived just five miles west of Brigley, have never
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: been a huge fan of anything Cubs, except for I
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: would say Ryan Sandberg that like there was just a
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: gravitas to him as we were growing up. We probably
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: caught we caught the tail end more so of his career,
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: but still, like, if there was one player that I
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: really enjoyed watching on the Cubs and got to see
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: often because of WGN growing up, it was Ryan Sandberg.
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: Between just the his ability to hit in clutch situations,
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: holding the all time home run record for second baseman
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: before Jeff Kent and Robinson Cano came along. The defense
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: stands out to me too, because that's one thing I
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: really want to highlight with Ryan Sandberg is like some
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: of my favorite cards actually are the nineteen ninety three
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: upper Deck ryin Sandberg where he's leaping above and catching
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: snaring out a line drive out of above his head
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: and going full stretch. The other one, do you remember
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: this one? The nineteen ninety four tops Ryan Sandberg card
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: where it's like a in motion he's like catching it
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: and turning a double play at second base and wearing
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: Also what is my favorite Cubs road jersey with the
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: gray with the little kind of cubbies on the side
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: and the big old cubs across his chest, and so
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: just like he looked great on baseball cards and he
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: was such a fun player to watch. Also just a
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: humble dude in terms of like whenever you saw him
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: speak in Chicago Land. He's also really he had a
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: couple of really good billboard ads around O'Hair between one
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: doing like the hair treatment the hair plugs, and two
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: he was a huge sponsor of cannabis companies, Like he
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: had teamed up with a cannabis company here in Chicago
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: and was all over billboards. So just a really popular guy.
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: And you've been seeing the memorials kind of set up
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: for him outside of Wrigley and all the just positive
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: things that have poured in. Another just interesting thing about him,
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: Remember when he retired for a brief moment in nineteen
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: ninety four, then came back and was still like an
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: impressive player at thirty four, slugged a ton of homers
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: after taking an entire year off. Just kind of wanting
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: to shout out and say rest in peace. Ryan Sandberg
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: that even from a very pro Cardinals podcast here, you
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: got to us in terms of touching our hearts and
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: making us love baseball. So we'll miss you.
- 1:42:54Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely, I think you said it well.
- 1:42:57Speaker 2: Durable player, always there, you know, always did things the
- 1:43:01Speaker 2: right way.
- 1:43:01Speaker 3: You know one.
- 1:43:02Speaker 2: You know, we love to make the connection across the
- 1:43:05Speaker 2: game to the fantasies to the cards in this one
- 1:43:08Speaker 2: and I'll call out I was just seeing there something
- 1:43:12Speaker 2: we don't actually talk about much on this podcast, but
- 1:43:13Speaker 2: it's definitely part of the collecting community is the there's
- 1:43:16Speaker 2: a small sect, i'd say, of the through the mail
- 1:43:19Speaker 2: autograph seekers out there that loved to send cards off
- 1:43:23Speaker 2: to retired players and try to.
- 1:43:25Speaker 3: Get their autographs.
- 1:43:26Speaker 2: And Ryan Sandberg was a huge part of that scene.
- 1:43:30Speaker 2: He was one of the few Hall of famers that
- 1:43:32Speaker 2: you could just mail a card to send them a
- 1:43:34Speaker 2: donation for a foundation. He'd sign a card and send
- 1:43:37Speaker 2: it right back within like two weeks. And he you know,
- 1:43:39Speaker 2: I actually saw a post that he was up until
- 1:43:42Speaker 2: the last few weeks he was still signing autographs for fans.
- 1:43:44Speaker 2: He's still making the time. He was just absolutely a
- 1:43:49Speaker 2: world class human being. So gone too soon, you know,
- 1:43:53Speaker 2: I don't know about you. I was caught a little
- 1:43:56Speaker 2: surprised by.
- 1:43:56Speaker 3: By this one.
- 1:43:57Speaker 2: Like I knew he had been a struggle for him,
- 1:43:59Speaker 2: but it did still feel like a much, much too soon.
- 1:44:03Speaker 2: So uh, wishing the best for for the I will
- 1:44:06Speaker 2: say the Cubs fans, the Cubs family, Ryan Sandbridge family,
- 1:44:10Speaker 2: with with this, with this, with this passing.
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: Yeah, totally agree. So we can also maybe hunt down
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: some PC editions for him, because we've we will be
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: revisiting that, I think probably in the new future for
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: some of the Hall of Fame inductions. Another thing that
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: happened that we didn't get to, uh since the last
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: time we potted, But we've only got limited time, so
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: we're going to wrap it up here. Brew Let everybody
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: know where they can reach you.
