- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi, everyone, and welcome to a very rare Friday afternoon
- 0:04Speaker 1: edition of the Women's Basketball Coaches Show. Bob Joyce and
- 0:07Speaker 1: Gino Oriamo with you right now. Later Rebecca Lobo will
- 0:10Speaker 1: join us in the last two segments. And it's rare,
- 0:13Speaker 1: you know, we do a coaches show the day after
- 0:15Speaker 1: a game, and this one was just a fabulous atmosphere
- 0:19Speaker 1: in Knoxville, Yukon, Tennessee. It kind of felt like the
- 0:23Speaker 1: old days with the intensity of the crowd. The student
- 0:25Speaker 1: section was phenomenal, and unfortunately the end result was a
- 0:28Speaker 1: four point loss. I mean, we could start so many
- 0:31Speaker 1: places in this game, both offensively and defensively. Where were
- 0:36Speaker 1: you most disappointed in the outcome of last night's game?
- 0:43Speaker 2: I would say probably the the opportunities that we had
- 0:52Speaker 2: to separate ourselves. You know, I think we got up
- 0:57Speaker 2: five or six, maybe even seven one time, I'm not
- 1:00Speaker 2: even sure, but you know, we had some opportunities, and uh,
- 1:07Speaker 2: some of the some of the shots that we missed
- 1:09Speaker 2: that we normally make, some of the mistakes that we made.
- 1:14Speaker 2: So I would say that plus that like minute and
- 1:17Speaker 2: a half with those couple of possessions where they got
- 1:20Speaker 2: a lot of momentum in the third quarter off a
- 1:23Speaker 2: couple of steals. Those were probably the most glaring moments
- 1:30Speaker 2: that that stood out, you know, and our inability to
- 1:35Speaker 2: get a couple of stops when we really needed. Just
- 1:40Speaker 2: just a lot of little things added all up, you know,
- 1:44Speaker 2: and you know, it's a two point game with less
- 1:47Speaker 2: than a minute ago. I think it was whatever it was,
- 1:49Speaker 2: and and yet we still put ourselves in a position
- 1:53Speaker 2: to win. And you know, that's kind of like the
- 1:56Speaker 2: same thing would happen in the USC game, you know,
- 1:58Speaker 2: where we put ourselves in position to win, but we
- 2:00Speaker 2: can't make a winning play when we have to make it.
- 2:05Speaker 2: But you know, there were some some really great bright spots.
- 2:10Speaker 2: You know, I thought KK was fantastic. I thought Ash
- 2:14Speaker 2: was great, you know, young guys, you know, Sarah was
- 2:17Speaker 2: you know, I think she had to play too many minutes,
- 2:19Speaker 2: which I didn't like. So there's a lot of great
- 2:22Speaker 2: things going forward that came out of that. But at
- 2:27Speaker 2: the end of the day, you know, I mean, you know,
- 2:29Speaker 2: exceptionally disappointed that you can't get a win, you know,
- 2:33Speaker 2: and they made some big threes when they had to
- 2:35Speaker 2: make them, you know, So yeah, that's about it.
- 2:41Speaker 1: I think the glaring thing, and you touched upon it early.
- 2:43Speaker 1: I mean nineteen of thirty five the total number of
- 2:47Speaker 1: layups you took advantage. You broke the press, well except
- 2:50Speaker 1: for that short little spurt that Tennessee had in the
- 2:53Speaker 1: third to flip the game. But what is it like
- 2:55Speaker 1: six inside the cylinder that were uncontested. I mean normally
- 2:59Speaker 1: those go in, but for whatever reason they didn't. And
- 3:03Speaker 1: those layups, I mean, you make what half of the
- 3:05Speaker 1: attempts that you missed, you win the game? In theory?
- 3:08Speaker 2: How many laps do we have the courting of.
- 3:12Speaker 1: The staff broadcast? Nineteen of thirty five was the number,
- 3:15Speaker 1: and I think at least six or seven of them
- 3:18Speaker 1: were uncontested.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, And you know you're playing a good
- 3:24Speaker 2: team on the road. That just that just can't that
- 3:27Speaker 2: just can't happen. You know, that just can't happen. You know,
- 3:30Speaker 2: you've got to you know, we're talking labs here. If
- 3:33Speaker 2: somebody who said you're going nineteen for thirty five from
- 3:35Speaker 2: the free throw line, I would say you deserve to lose,
- 3:38Speaker 2: you know, So you go nineteen for thirty five from lap,
- 3:42Speaker 2: you definitely deserve to lose. So it's astonishing that given
- 3:45Speaker 2: that stat you know, we scored seventy six points and
- 3:49Speaker 2: it's a two point game.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Yeah, so.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, we have to get to the bottom
- 3:57Speaker 2: of that. Obviously. Is that immaturity, it just you know,
- 4:02Speaker 2: young and immature. Is it lack of concentration, Is it
- 4:05Speaker 2: getting caught up in the moment or what you know?
- 4:08Speaker 2: But but but obviously that's that's kind of a new
- 4:15Speaker 2: thing too. I mean the last three or four years,
- 4:18Speaker 2: you know, you look back to all those years we'd
- 4:21Speaker 2: have miss labs. You know, I used to laugh about
- 4:23Speaker 2: how many you know, women's basketball teams miss labs and
- 4:27Speaker 2: that wasn't us. And now you know, probably since Visa
- 4:33Speaker 2: and Lou graduated, we missed. We miss a lot of laughs.
- 4:36Speaker 2: We've become like every other team and it kind of stinks,
- 4:39Speaker 2: and I hope I can get to the bottom of it.
- 4:42Speaker 2: But it just makes absolutely no sense that you're a
- 4:45Speaker 2: college player and you can't make a lab. I mean,
- 4:48Speaker 2: that just doesn't you know, you you you shouldn't be
- 4:53Speaker 2: playing college basketball if you can't make labs.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Right, All right, let's get a couple of positives before
- 4:58Speaker 1: we take our first break. Clearly came k Arnold had
- 5:00Speaker 1: a phenomenal game. You hope she builds off of that.
- 5:03Speaker 1: But you mentioned she was also probably the most competitive
- 5:07Speaker 1: player on the team out on the floor. As good
- 5:10Speaker 1: as that sounds, does that sound kind of disconcerting to
- 5:13Speaker 1: the rest of the guys?
- 5:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it should. You know it should. You know,
- 5:26Speaker 2: we we look at our team and we go, you know,
- 5:31Speaker 2: generally speaking, you know, to win these games, you need
- 5:35Speaker 2: Sarah Page and Easy to have their normal you know,
- 5:40Speaker 2: nineteen seventeen, sixteen eighteen, you know, the three of them,
- 5:44Speaker 2: and you you get out of there and then k
- 5:47Speaker 2: u kk whatever she does, and then you go, Okay,
- 5:51Speaker 2: we get out of there with with an somewhat comfortable win. Well,
- 5:56Speaker 2: when only one out of the three has somewhat kind
- 5:59Speaker 2: of sort of normal game, Uh, that's not that's not
- 6:02Speaker 2: the that's not the formula for winning. So I thought
- 6:07Speaker 2: KK was tremendous and I thought she was exactly what
- 6:11Speaker 2: I want her to be. Uh, there's some things we
- 6:13Speaker 2: got to clean up that she's aware of. But all
- 6:18Speaker 2: in all, I thought, yeah, I thought she was the
- 6:21Speaker 2: best player on our team for sure.
- 6:25Speaker 1: And I think you can't say enough about what Aubrey
- 6:27Speaker 1: did Now, obviously she's had a good track record against Tennessee.
- 6:31Speaker 1: This style fits your game, but clearly her most productive
- 6:34Speaker 1: game since coming back.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Yeah, Yeah, you know, I didn't know what to expect.
- 6:41Speaker 2: You know, there's there's a lot that you have to
- 6:48Speaker 2: get back to when you haven't played in a long time,
- 6:50Speaker 2: and so I was hoping that with each passing game,
- 6:53Speaker 2: you know, we'll get a little bit better, a little
- 6:56Speaker 2: bit more productive. So let's hope that you know, continues
- 7:02Speaker 2: to go in that direction, you know, starting Saturday.
- 7:05Speaker 1: All right, welcome back with more of Gino on the
- 7:07Speaker 1: Wells Fargo you kind of women's basketball coaches show. In
- 7:10Speaker 1: a moment here on Learfield,
