- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday, it's the 28th of
- 0:16August and good on you for tapping on play and inviting me
- 0:20into your day, as busy as it might be or as chillaxed as it
- 0:25might be. I don't know where your your day
- 0:27lies in the in the spectrum of madness, but hopefully it's not
- 0:31too crazy a day. And today we can stop for a
- 0:34moment and we can dip back into this incredible story in the
- 0:39book of Acts. And today we are going to be
- 0:42following our friend Peter as he goes around preaching and is
- 0:46amazed that it's not just Jews being converted and receiving
- 0:50the Holy Spirit, but those dirty, dirty Gentiles.
- 0:54Unbelievable. What is the Holy Spirit thinking
- 0:57being so inclusive? So let us read together this
- 1:01breaking of moulds and defying of expectations, as God's love
- 1:06extends well beyond the borders that people thought it should.
- 1:09As we read together Acts chapter 10
- 1:22in Caesarea there lived a Roman officer named Cornelius who is a
- 1:26captain of the Italian regiment. He was a devout, God fearing
- 1:31man, as was everyone in his household.
- 1:34He gave generously to the poor and prayed regularly to God.
- 1:38One afternoon about 3:00, he had a vision in which he saw an
- 1:42Angel of God coming toward him. Cornelius, the Angel said.
- 1:48Cornelius stared at him in terror.
- 1:52What is it, Sir? He asked the Angel, and the
- 1:55Angel replied, Your prayers and gifts to the poor have been
- 1:59received by God as an offering. Now send some men to Joppa and
- 2:04summon a man named Simon Peter. He is staying with Simon, a
- 2:09Tanner who lives near the seashore.
- 2:12As soon as the Angel was gone, Cornelius called two of his
- 2:15household servants and a devout soldier, one of his personal
- 2:19attendants. He told them what had happened
- 2:22and sent them off to Joppa. The next day, as Cornelius's
- 2:26messengers were nearing the town, Peter went up on the flat
- 2:30roof to pray. It was about noon and he was
- 2:33hungry, but while a meal was being prepared, he fell into a
- 2:38trance. He saw the sky open and
- 2:41something like a large sheet was let down by its four corners.
- 2:45In the sheet were all sorts of animals, reptiles and birds.
- 2:49Then a voice said to him, Get up, Peter, kill and eat them.
- 2:54No, Lord, Peter declared. I've never eaten anything that
- 2:58our Jewish laws have declared impure and unclean.
- 3:01But the voice spoke again. Do not call something unclean if
- 3:06God has made it clean. The same vision was repeated 3
- 3:10times. Then the sheet was suddenly
- 3:13pulled up to heaven. Peter was very perplexed.
- 3:17What could the vision mean? Just then, the men sent by
- 3:21Cornelius found Simon's house standing outside the gate.
- 3:25They asked if a man named Simon Peter was staying there.
- 3:29Meanwhile, as Peter was puzzling over the vision, the Holy Spirit
- 3:33said to him, Three men have come looking for you.
- 3:37Get up, go downstairs and go with them without hesitation.
- 3:41Don't worry for I have sent them.
- 3:45Sir. Peter went down and said, I'm
- 3:47the man you're looking for, why have you come?
- 3:50They said we were sent by Cornelius, a Roman officer.
- 3:55He is a devout and God fearing man, well respected by all the
- 3:58Jews. A holy Angel instructed him to
- 4:02summon you to his house so that he can hear your message.
- 4:07So Peter invited the men to stay for the night.
- 4:10The next day he went with them, accompanied by some of the
- 4:13brothers from Joppa. They arrived in Say, Saria, the
- 4:16following day. Cornelius was waiting for them
- 4:19and had called together his relatives and close friends.
- 4:23As Peter entered his home, Cornelius fell at his feet and
- 4:26worshipped him, but Peter pulled him up and said, stand up, I'm a
- 4:31human being just like you. So they talked together and went
- 4:35inside where many others were assembled.
- 4:38Peter told them, You know it is against our laws for a Jewish
- 4:43man to enter a Gentile home like this or to associate with you.
- 4:47But God has shown me that I should no longer think of anyone
- 4:51as impure or unclean. So I came without objection as
- 4:55soon as I was sent for. Now tell me why you sent for me,
- 5:00Cornelius replied. 4 days ago I was praying in my house about
- 5:04the same time, 3:00 in the afternoon.
- 5:08Suddenly a man in dazzling clothes was standing in front of
- 5:11me. He told me, Cornelius, your
- 5:15prayer has been heard and your gifts to the poor have been
- 5:18noticed by God. Now send messengers to Joppa and
- 5:22summon a man named Simon Peter. He is staying in the home of
- 5:27Simon, a Tanner who lives near the seashore.
- 5:31So I sent for you at once, and it was good of you to come.
- 5:35Now we are all here waiting before God to hear the message
- 5:39the Lord has given you. Then Peter replied, I see very
- 5:44clearly that God shows no favouritism in every nation.
- 5:48He accepts those who fear Him and do what is right.
- 5:52This is the message of good news for the people of Israel, that
- 5:56there is peace with God through Jesus Christ who is Lord of all.
- 6:02You know what happened throughout Judea, beginning in
- 6:04Galilee after John began preaching his message of
- 6:07baptism. And you know that God anointed
- 6:10Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power.
- 6:14Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were
- 6:18oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
- 6:22And we apostles are witnesses of all he did throughout Judea and
- 6:26in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging
- 6:30him on a cross, but God raised him to life on the third day.
- 6:34Then God allowed him to appear, not to the general public, but
- 6:38to us, whom God had chosen in advance to be His witnesses.
- 6:43We were those who ate and drank with Him after he rose from the
- 6:46dead. And he ordered us to preach
- 6:48everywhere and to testify that Jesus is the one appointed by
- 6:53God to be the Judge of all the living and the dead.
- 6:58He is the one all the prophets testified about, saying that
- 7:02everyone who believes in Him will have their sins forgiven
- 7:05through His name. Even as Peter was saying these
- 7:09things, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who were listening to
- 7:13the message. The Jewish believers who came
- 7:16with Peter were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been
- 7:20poured out on the Gentiles too, for they heard them speaking in
- 7:24other tongues and praising God. Then Peter asked, can anyone
- 7:29object to their being baptised now that they have received the
- 7:33Holy Spirit just as we did? So he gave orders for them to be
- 7:37baptised in the name of Jesus Christ.
- 7:40Afterward, Cornelius asked him to stay with them for several
- 7:43days. Ah Jesus, as you have thrown
- 7:56open the doors to your Kingdom that all are welcome to enter.
- 8:02Lord, we are still trapped in our own tribalism and we are so
- 8:07quick to judge who we think should be in and who we think
- 8:10should be out, who we think is worthy of your grace and your
- 8:15love. Oh Jesus, just challenge these
- 8:19tribalistic tendencies that we have, these desires to exclude
- 8:25people because we don't think that they are worthy or they are
- 8:27right. Or help us to be challenged so
- 8:31that we can see that everyone, even those that our society and
- 8:34ourselves might deem unworthy. Everyone is welcome to your
- 8:39Kingdom, to your table. All they need do is hear your
- 8:43message and believe in you. So Jesus, help us be your
- 8:50ambassadors of love, of inclusion and of that life
- 8:55changing message so that everyone, expected and
- 8:59unexpected, can come before you with faith and join your
- 9:04Kingdom. Ah, we love you and we are so
- 9:07grateful that you have invited us and deemed us worthy to be in
- 9:12your Kingdom, in your family, and loved by you.
- 9:17So we love you right back, Lord, and we pray all of this in your
- 9:20saving name, Amen.
