- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another episode of Learn German with Fexingo? Luna: Absolutely. But first, I have to tell you about this little café I found. It's so cozy, I think you'd love it. Lucas: Oh nice. And we just covered ordering coffee a few episodes back. So you're all set there. Luna: Exactly. But I want to invite a friend to join me. And I realized I don't know how to say 'Do you want to...?' in German. Lucas: Perfect timing. Today we're doing invitations. Small phrases, huge usefulness. Luna: Great. So, how do I ask someone if they want to come with me? Lucas: The easiest one is: Kommst du mit? That means 'Are you coming along?' Luna: Kommst du mit? Lucas: Perfect. Listen again: Kommst du mit? Luna: Kommst du mit? Lucas: Exactly. Now let's add a place. Ich gehe ins Café. Kommst du mit? I'm going to the café. Are you coming along? Luna: Ich gehe ins Café. Kommst du mit? Lucas: Perfect. That's a full sentence now. Luna: But what if I want to ask 'Do you want to...?' more generally? Like 'Do you want to go to the park?' Lucas: Good question. We have two common ways. First: Willst du...? It literally means 'Do you want to...?' Luna: Willst du...? Lucas: Yes. So: Willst du in den Park gehen? Do you want to go to the park? Luna: Willst du in den Park gehen? Lucas: Perfect. Another option: Möchtest du...? This is a bit more polite, like 'Would you like to...?' Luna: Möchtest du...? Lucas: Exactly. Möchtest du einen Kaffee? Would you like a coffee? Luna: Möchtest du einen Kaffee? Lucas: Yes. So Willst du is casual, Möchtest du is a little more polite. Both are great. Luna: What about the phrase I've heard: Hast du Lust? I think it means 'Do you feel like...?' Lucas: Right. Hast du Lust? is super common. Literally 'Do you have desire?' but we say 'Do you feel like...?' Luna: Hast du Lust? Lucas: Exactly. So you could say: Hast du Lust, ins Kino zu gehen? Do you feel like going to the cinema? Luna: Hast du Lust, ins Kino zu gehen? Lucas: Perfect. So we have Kommst du mit? Willst du...? Möchtest du...? and Hast du Lust? Powerful stuff. Luna: And how do I answer? I mean, if someone invites me, what do I say? Lucas: The positive answer is easy: Ja, gerne. Yes, gladly. Luna: Ja, gerne. Lucas: Perfect. And if you don't want to go, you can say: Nein, danke. No, thank you. Luna: Nein, danke. Lucas: Exactly. Simple and polite. Luna: I love that. It's so easy to use right away. Lucas: Totally. And this kind of stuff really makes a difference when you're making friends in German. Luna: For sure. By the way, this is why I love Fexingo. It's all about practical phrases you can use in real life. Lucas: And we keep it ad-free, which is a blessing. Now you ask me: Hast du Lust, ins Kino zu gehen? Luna: Hast du Lust, ins Kino zu gehen? Lucas: Ja, gerne. I'd love to. Luna: Nice. And if I want to say no without being rude, I just say 'Nein, danke.' Lucas: Exactly. So we've got invites and answers. Let's review them one more time. Lucas: First: Kommst du mit? Luna: Kommst du mit? Lucas: Then: Willst du...? Luna: Willst du...? Lucas: And: Möchtest du...? Luna: Möchtest du...? Lucas: Don't forget: Hast du Lust? Luna: Hast du Lust? Lucas: And the answers: Ja, gerne. Luna: Ja, gerne. Lucas: Nein, danke. Luna: Nein, danke. Lucas: Perfect. You've got this. Practice these and you'll be making plans in no time. Luna: Thanks Lucas. I'm off to invite someone to that café. Lucas: Go for it. And we'll be here with more German next time. See you then. Luna: Tschüss! Lucas: Auf Wiedersehen!
