- 0:08Speaker 1: Hey, what's happening everybody? Welcome into this edition of The
- 0:11check O Daily. I am your host, Andrew Dichecko, and
- 0:15today I'm going to discuss a topic that I tend
- 0:19to revisit around this time every offseason, and that is
- 0:25naming who I'm expecting to be the most improved Eagle
- 0:28heading into the twenty twenty five season. Now, I'm going
- 0:32to take this a step further because there's so many
- 0:35good options that I'm now going to give one on
- 0:38offense and on defense. And there are so many on
- 0:41defense that you can name if you really think about it,
- 0:44and you can make a case for several. But I
- 0:48mean if you look at the offensive side of the ball,
- 0:50there aren't many that you could make the case for.
- 0:53Right I mean Tyler Steen, assuming he starts at right guard,
- 0:56which obviously he's he heavily favored and has that inside track, Well,
- 1:01that would be somebody who makes a significant improvement to
- 1:05their game going from reserve to starter and running with
- 1:09the opportunity. Will Shipley, I've talked a lot about him.
- 1:12I think that he is going to have a breakout season.
- 1:17Because I picked him as my breakout player, I don't
- 1:20necessarily want to go back and name them again for
- 1:24you know, my most improved, especially when you look at
- 1:28what he had, what he had to work with last season.
- 1:30Just you know, sixty five offensive snaps, thirty carries, eighty
- 1:34two yards. That's there's not really much to improve from.
- 1:37I mean, like he made the most of his opportunities.
- 1:41There's a player who had a role, but there were
- 1:44there's some contexts needed. He had a role that was
- 1:47fairly significant and he really was never able to run
- 1:51with it, and that is wide receiver Jahan Dotson. That's
- 1:54my pick for most improved player on the offensive side
- 1:56of the ball. He had thirty three targets nineteen passes
- 2:01in the regular season for two hundred and sixteen yards,
- 2:03no touchdowns, caught three or five targets for fifty three
- 2:07yards and a touchdown in the postseason. But I think
- 2:10this is a year that you can make a case
- 2:14for Johan Dotson really starting to emerge. And obviously, when
- 2:18you're on an offense that already has aj Brown, Davonte Smith,
- 2:21Dallas Goddard, you can even mix in, say Kuon Barkley.
- 2:24The Eagles choose to deploy the running back and utilize
- 2:27them more as a receiver. John Dotson is frankly not
- 2:31going to see a lot of passes during the season.
- 2:33That's just the way that it's going to go. That's
- 2:34the pecking order. But I do think that he has
- 2:38more to offer. I think that he can get vertical.
- 2:41I think that you can get creative in how you
- 2:43get him the football. Whereas last season, I felt like
- 2:46there was a lot of horizontal routes and almost when
- 2:50the ball came his way, he was getting tackled. He
- 2:52never really had a chance to make plays on the
- 2:55move and run after the catch. So I think you
- 2:58might see some different route concepts and ways to accentuate
- 3:03what Johan Dotson can give you and really tap into
- 3:06the player that he was as a rookie. Because the
- 3:09Johan Dotson that I remember with the Commanders a couple
- 3:12of years ago was one who was aggressive to the football.
- 3:16I thought he was explosive and twitchy, and you didn't
- 3:20really see that Dotson last year. Now, he made a
- 3:22big play when it counts big plays. He caught the
- 3:25touchdown against the Packers. Of course, he caught that deep
- 3:29shot in the Super Bowl that set up that first touchdown.
- 3:33So this is a player who has that in him
- 3:35to do it. He did. His skills haven't eroded. But
- 3:39I think now that he has a full offseason with
- 3:42the coaches, because let's not forget he was acquired in
- 3:45late August and you're learning an offense that was then
- 3:48presided over by Kellen Moore, and there are different nuances
- 3:51and intricacies that you have to account for. And it
- 3:54never quite looked like even whenever he was out there,
- 3:56that he was a primary option or he was somebody
- 3:59that that to be honest, that Jaymen had a lot
- 4:02of confidence throw in the football too, because they were
- 4:04still trying to feel out that relationship. Whereas you have
- 4:08players who he's been building that trust and confidence in
- 4:11for you know, years. So I think now having that
- 4:15time to develop and you have a tendency to you know,
- 4:20his tendencies, and you're able to really tap into that,
- 4:23I really do believe that Johan Dotson's going to see
- 4:26more volume in terms of targets, but also more explosive
- 4:30type of plays and getting him on the move and
- 4:34taking advantage of his run after the catchability. It's not
- 4:37hard to improve off the season that he had. But
- 4:39the reason why I'm picking Johan Dottson over a will
- 4:42ship points because he was out there for quite a
- 4:45bit last season. There was expectations attached to him when
- 4:48he was acquired, and he really did not fulfill that.
- 4:51And for a multitude of reasons. It's not just a
- 4:54player who was underutilized. It's not just a player who
- 4:58doesn't have the quite skill sets that some thought. There's
- 5:01so many different reasons why he kind of did not
- 5:06meet the mark. But I think this year is gonna
- 5:08be a bit different under Kevin Patulo. I am expecting
- 5:12personally to see a much more reinvigorated passing attack and
- 5:18some creativity in that regard. But I also think you're
- 5:21gonna see other players involved in that, and I think
- 5:25for it to really reach its full potential, you have
- 5:28to include everybody and distribute the ball to your gamut
- 5:31of playmakers. Obviously that Dotson is going to be further
- 5:35down the list, but I certainly think that he can
- 5:37prove on nineteen catches for two hundred and sixteen yards
- 5:40in the regular season on just thirty three targets, well,
- 5:43there's one football, But I also believe that the player
- 5:47has to do a better job. But Also, the coaches
- 5:49have to do a better job of getting him the
- 5:51football and finding ways to get him in space. I
- 5:54think he can help the Eagles there, and I'm curious
- 5:57to see how Kevin Patulo, the new offensive coordinator, and
- 6:00Parks Frasier, the past game coordinator, how they choose to
- 6:06utilize thoughts in this season within the offense. Now that
- 6:09he has a full year and doesn't have to worry
- 6:12about the acclamation period and ironing out wrinkles and establishing
- 6:16a chemistry with his quarterback that's already been established, and
- 6:20now he's able to kind of hit that ground running
- 6:22in training camp and just play football. On the defensive side, well,
- 6:29I could have went I could have went Keeley Ringo,
- 6:33I could have went Jeremiah Trotter Junior, who I think
- 6:36is going to have a large role as a third linebacker,
- 6:39especially early in the season. He's going to be put
- 6:42to the test, and I think that's where he can
- 6:44show how much he's improved with a more expanded role
- 6:47on defense and an uptakeing playing time. Moro Jomo is
- 6:52a player that you can certainly make a case for,
- 6:54But I keep going back to this player, this second
- 6:58year player, from Houston, one who I have been very
- 7:02bullish about, one who I have said multiple times I've
- 7:06proclaimed him to be my pick for the Eagles defensive
- 7:10player who makes the biggest leap forward of any player
- 7:12on that unit. I'm talking about jay loox Hunt, the
- 7:16second year edge rusher, and to kind of go back
- 7:20over all the reasons why, and I've written about it,
- 7:23and I've talked about it on multiple platforms, But when
- 7:26you look at where j loox Hunt was at this
- 7:29time last season, a lot of question marks. There were
- 7:32some who said that the Eagles reached on the pick
- 7:34taking him where they did in the third round. They
- 7:37weren't familiar with the college. I understand that. But j
- 7:40loox Hunt performed well at the Senior Bowl, which is
- 7:44some of the nation's top competition, and he was squarely
- 7:47on NFL radars. So while the outside may have viewed
- 7:50him as this player that was an unknown and a
- 7:53player who maybe wasn't a household name, that wasn't the
- 7:56case in NFL circles. But anyway, he gets the training camp,
- 8:00working largely with the third team, and he's performing a
- 8:03little bit better than I think anyone could have expected.
- 8:06And then you get to Week one, he's an active
- 8:11when they go to Brazil, and he start to wonder, Okay, well,
- 8:14maybe this is starting to track a little bit. Maybe
- 8:17this is in fact going to be a red shirt
- 8:19season or one where he's sparsely active throughout the season.
- 8:25And then of course he was active the rest of
- 8:27the way and started to participate more on defense and
- 8:31get more involved in play more snaps. But it was
- 8:33beyond that. It was his ability to develop more of
- 8:38a pass rush plan, add more moves to his bag
- 8:41of tricks. He was actually pretty effective against the run
- 8:44as well. And for a player that's so new to
- 8:47that position. Remember he was four years ago a safety
- 8:50at Cornell, and you're not playing against the elite of
- 8:55the elite in the college football realm at Houston Christian.
- 8:58So for him to really take to that role in
- 9:00that coaching, that tough coaching from Vic Fangail, and really
- 9:04just by midseason, he was effective enough that Vic Fangail
- 9:10and the Eagles were okay with him being the third
- 9:13edge rusher in the rotation versus someone like a Charles Harris,
- 9:17who was a veteran on the Eagles practice squad. He's
- 9:20played in a ton of games. Jalox was their third
- 9:23edge rusher, and then by the end of the season
- 9:26he was making plays in the playoffs. He had a
- 9:28sack in the Divisional round against Matthew Stafford, he picked
- 9:31up a half sack in the Super Bowl, and he
- 9:34really proved that throughout the season he was growing. He
- 9:37was developing in a rapid pace, suggesting that there is
- 9:40in fact a breakout season on the horizon. So when
- 9:44I see someone like Jaalox who has the measurables, looks
- 9:47to me like he added some strength to his frame
- 9:52lining him up opposite Nolan Smith, I think you have
- 9:54a really young and dynamic group of edge rushers. And
- 9:58this doesn't get talked about enough. But I go back
- 10:00to the point that I made earlier in this conversation,
- 10:02and that is that jayloks Hunt acquitted himself fairly well
- 10:06in run defense. You have to be willing to do that,
- 10:09but you also have to have strength, and you have
- 10:11to know how to use your hands, and you have
- 10:13to be aggressive at the point of attech. It's a
- 10:16mindset from what I've been able to glean anyway, and
- 10:20he's not afraid to get after it. He's had a
- 10:23really good mentor in Brandon. Grammy often talks about how
- 10:26much he's learned from Brandon. He's a student of the game,
- 10:30and that really shines through whenever you talk to Jaywoks.
- 10:32He's always trying to find ways to get better. He
- 10:35never entered the NFL with the mindset of I'm going
- 10:38to be a red shirt player. It's gonna take me
- 10:40a little bit of time. He essentially said, Doran Locker
- 10:42clean out. Well, I didn't. I wasn't planning on just
- 10:46just watching, you know, watching everybody play on the sideline.
- 10:49I would have been cool with whatever they needed me
- 10:51to do. But he pretty much saying I didn't just
- 10:54come here to cheer my teammates on. I came here
- 10:56to play football and compete for a role. And he did.
- 11:00And he played just two hundred and forty one snaps
- 11:02last year. That was about twenty five percent and had
- 11:06just think it was just a second and a half
- 11:09during the regular season. So when you take all that
- 11:12into consideration, a lot of this has to do with opportunity,
- 11:15because to really have that improvement, you have to have
- 11:18the opportunity to showcase that. And I think he's going
- 11:21to because I do believe that not only is Jaloxs
- 11:24Hunt going to start, but I would also argue that
- 11:26JeOS Hunt is going to make the biggest leap forward
- 11:28of any Eagles defensive player, which is something that I've
- 11:31been saying since late February and starting to become a
- 11:34common theme. I'm seeing it out there a little bit more.
- 11:36I'm hearing it out there a little bit more. But
- 11:40some with some players, you always wonder, you know, you
- 11:43might be skeptical about the hype, and I don't think so.
- 11:49He's not a best kept secret anymore. He's now out
- 11:53there on the radars of many people, and a lot
- 11:56of people are depicting him to have a breakout season.
- 11:58But I just outlined all of the reasons why I
- 12:01believe that he will. So. On the offensive side, you
- 12:04have Johan Dotson and on the defensive side, you have
- 12:07Jalox Hunt. Those are my two candidates that I'm naming
- 12:11for most Improved Eagles for the twenty twenty five season.
- 12:15I think if you if you look at where they
- 12:17were last season and you kind of kind of forecast
- 12:20what's ahead for them or what could be in store
- 12:22for them this year, and I believe that Jay Oaks
- 12:26Hunt could have anywhere from eight to nine sacks, might
- 12:28be just shy of double digit, whereas I think Nolan
- 12:31Smith will get double digit sacks. That is a dramatically
- 12:35improved season from year one to year two and would
- 12:37really align with my projection and expectations for Jay Looks
- 12:43going into his second season. So, as you can see,
- 12:46I've made my case. If you have your opinion and
