Transcript
- 0:00Welcome back to the Deep Dive. Today we are strapping on our
- 0:04boots and perhaps premedicating with a substantial amount of
- 0:08motion sickness pills because we are heading to the Pyrenees.
- 0:12We're doing a sort of forensic analysis of a place that seems
- 0:16to divide opinion right down the middle.
- 0:18Arensil, Andora. Arensil.
- 0:20Yeah, it's a name that tends to provoke a pretty visceral
- 0:23reaction, doesn't it? It really does.
- 0:25Depending on who you ask, it's either the ultimate budget hack
- 0:28for families, a duty free paradise where the gin flows
- 0:31cheaper than water, or it's a concrete trap at the end of a
- 0:34dark valley. Exactly.
- 0:35It has this completely polarizing reputation.
- 0:38You hear these whispers of the budget Alps, or you know, the
- 0:41duty free heaven, but then you hear other people calling it a
- 0:44British colony in the snow, right?
- 0:46So we've got a massive stack of research here today, logistical
- 0:49assessments, cost breakdowns, terrain maps, forum deep dives.
- 0:53And the reality, it seems, is way more nuanced than the
- 0:56brochures suggest. Absolutely.
- 0:59And the central tension we need to resolve for you today is
- 1:03pretty stark. Is a rinse all a hidden gem for
- 1:07families looking to save a significant amount of money?
- 1:11Or is it a logistical nightmare that you will regret booking the
- 1:14moment you step off the plane? And looking at the data, it
- 1:18suggests it's a bit of both, often at the same time.
- 1:22It just really depends on how you navigate the the specific
- 1:26hurdles this unique little principality throws at you.
- 1:30We found, I think, 3 specific insights in the research that
- 1:34act as these reality checks. Almost like slaps in the face,
- 1:37you know? Yeah, that's a good way to put
- 1:38it. They just contradict the glossy
- 1:40marketing version of this place. I want to highlight them right
- 1:42up front. OK, so the first one is the
- 1:44scale. Yes, it is deceptively, almost
- 1:48shockingly small. Yeah, if you book the wrong
- 1:50accommodation, it doesn't feel cozy.
- 1:52It feels. Claustrophobic.
- 1:54Claustrophobic. Exactly.
- 1:55It is not a sprawling resort. And the second one is the food.
- 1:59Yes, the food. If you're imagining some kind of
- 2:01Spanish tapas feast on the mountain just because you're
- 2:04near the border, you were going to be so disappointed.
- 2:08The sources describe the on mountain lining as what was it,
- 2:11Hardy fuel. Hardy fuel, not gastronomy.
- 2:14Definitely not. And the third slap.
- 2:18The culture, Yeah, It's this confusing, fascinating mix your
- 2:23sandwich between France and Spain.
- 2:25Yet the dominant language you hear on the street often isn't
- 2:28Catalan or French. It creates a very, very specific
- 2:31vibe. It does, but our mission today
- 2:34is to unpack the logistics, the hidden costs, and the very
- 2:37specific traps of a family ski trip to this unique little
- 2:41principality. So where do we start?
- 2:43Geography. Let's.
- 2:44Start with geography, because I think this is where most people
- 2:45make their first wrong assumption right?
- 2:47They look at a map, they see see mountains between France and
- 2:49Spain and they just assume it's another version of the Alps.
- 2:53But Arinsul is geographically, well, it's distinct.
- 2:57It is to really get the experience, you have to
- 2:59understand the topography. Arinsul is part of the Val Nord
- 3:03ski area. It's physically linked to
- 3:05another resort called PAL. But crucially, and this is where
- 3:08people get confused, it is not part of Granvilleira.
- 3:11Which is the big famous one? That's Sildou El Tartr Pastela
- 3:14Casa. Correct?
- 3:16Granvilleira is the massive sprawling domain that I mean
- 3:20that rivals the big French resorts in size.
- 3:23Our insults a different beast entirely.
- 3:25The source material describes our insult as sitting in a dead
- 3:29end valley. And they mean that literally,
- 3:31they do. I found that description
- 3:33fascinating because it just dictates the entire vibe of the
- 3:37resort. The road, It literally just
- 3:40stops there. You drive up the steep gorge and
- 3:43then you hit a wall of mountains.
- 3:46It changes your expectations immediately.
- 3:47Completely. If you're picturing A sprawling
- 3:50winter Wonderland where you can, you know, wander seamlessly from
- 3:53village to village, this is not It is a linear strip of hotels
- 3:57along a river shattered by very, very steep mountains on both
- 4:01sides. Which sounds dramatic, and I'm
- 4:03sure visually it is striking. But the research points out a
- 4:06pretty big downside to that drama, or the lack of it.
- 4:09Exactly because the valley is so steep and so narrow, the sun
- 4:13doesn't hit the valley floor for very long.
- 4:15Especially in deep winter, it can feel a bit dark.
- 4:17Yeah, the village spends a lot of time in the shade.
- 4:20And because it's a dead end, there is no through traffic,
- 4:24which is good for noise I suppose.
- 4:26Sure, but it means everything is concentrated on that one single
- 4:29Rd. It just feels tight.
- 4:31Now, zooming out slightly, we have to address the political
- 4:34elephant in the room. This is a principality, A
- 4:37sovereign state. Why does that matter for someone
- 4:39who just wants to book a ski holiday?
- 4:42Well, it matters for your mindset and for your wallet.
- 4:46Andorra is not in the European Union, right?
- 4:49Uses the euro effectively, but it's not an EU member state.
- 4:53And that means when you cross that border, you are leaving
- 4:57the, let's call it, the regulatory safety net of the EU.
- 5:00So it's not that seamless drive across the border in your rental
- 5:04car experience you get between, say, France and Germany, where
- 5:06you don't even tap the brakes. Not at all, no.
- 5:08There are real border guards. There are customs checks.
- 5:11You have to shift your mental model from domestic European
- 5:14travel to international excursion.
- 5:16You might actually get stopped. You might get stopped, you might
- 5:19get searched for cigarettes and alcohol on the way out because
- 5:22of the tax differences. It adds a layer of friction.
- 5:25You just don't get in the UPS. It feels like you're you're
- 5:27leaving the system. And Speaking of the environment,
- 5:30let's talk snow. We're in the Pyrenees.
- 5:32Does that mean it's warmer than the Alps?
- 5:33It's more erratic, that's the keyword the sources use.
- 5:37The village sits at 1550 meters, which is actually quite
- 5:41respectable, higher than a lot of Austrian villages.
- 5:44The slopes go up to 2560 meters, but the weather patterns in the
- 5:49Pyrenees are heavily influenced by the Atlantic and the
- 5:52Mediterranean. You're just closer to the ocean.
- 5:54So what does that mean for me, the skier?
- 5:56It means volatility. You can get glorious sunshine
- 5:59one day and then rain at the base the next.
- 6:01You don't go to Andorra expecting waist deep powder for
- 6:04seven days straight. It's not Japan.
- 6:06It's not Utah. Definitely not, no.
- 6:08You go for the groomers, you go for the man made snow
- 6:11reliability, which to be fair, they are excellent at.
- 6:15They've invested heavily in snow cannons because they know the
- 6:18weather is fickle. If you get powder treated as a
- 6:21lucky bonus, not a guarantee. OK, so we know where it is, what
- 6:26the weather's like. Now we have to actually get
- 6:28there. And reading through the
- 6:30logistics assessment in the source material, this seems to
- 6:32be the single biggest hurdle. The transfer is described as
- 6:38brutal. Logistical nightmare was the
- 6:40other phrase that kept popping up.
- 6:42And honestly, this is the price you pay for the cheap skiing.
- 6:45Most people fly into Barcelona or Toulouse.
- 6:47Which makes sense financially. I mean, those are major hubs.
- 6:50Flights are cheap and frequent, right?
- 6:52But the transfer from those airports, you were looking at 3
- 6:561/2 hours. Minimum.
- 6:58And it's not a smooth, straight highway cruise like, you know,
- 7:01driving to Munich or Geneva, once you hit the foothills of
- 7:05the Pyrenees, it is just relentless switchbacks.
- 7:08The source is called This a major gamble for children with
- 7:12motion sickness. I would go further.
- 7:14I'd say it's a strategic failure point.
- 7:16If your kid gets carsick, this trip is effectively over before
- 7:20it even begins. You are spending 90 minutes of
- 7:23that 3 1/2 hour drive winding left and right up a steep valley
- 7:28gorge. It is intense.
- 7:30It's physically draining. And there's no train option, is
- 7:33there? That's the other thing people
- 7:34always look for. No trains in the Andora.
- 7:37No the train line stop at the foothills in France or Spain.
- 7:40You have to take a bus or a private transfer.
- 7:43You are trapped in a vehicle for the duration.
- 7:45OK, so let's assume we've survived the the Vomit Comet, as
- 7:49one form user colorfully described it, and we arrive in
- 7:53the village. Let's talk first impressions.
- 7:55What does Aaron Salt actually look like?
- 7:57The aesthetic is very specific. The sources describe it as stone
- 8:01and slate. It really doesn't have that
- 8:03timber framed, you know, chocolate box charm you get in
- 8:06the Austrian tie roll or the Q jellies of the French Alps.
- 8:09The phrase Architectural Brutalism meets Mountain Lodge
- 8:12really stuck out to me in the notes.
- 8:14It's accurate. It's very Gray.
- 8:16It feels fortified. Most of the development happened
- 8:18during a boom period. So it's functional.
- 8:21And because of that valley shape we mentioned, it's vertical.
- 8:24This is a crucial detail for anyone booking a hotel.
- 8:27You might see a listing that says 300 meters from the left.
- 8:31Which sounds great in London or New York.
- 8:33That's a 3 minute walk. Right.
- 8:35But in Erinzel, that 300 meters could be 300 meters straight up
- 8:40a 45° hill. And.
- 8:43If you have to drag two kids, four sets of skis and boots up
- 8:46that hill every morning, you're going to be miserable.
- 8:49The topography is unforgiving. So checking the topography on
- 8:52Google Earth, not just the map distance is it's mandatory.
- 8:56Absolutely mandatory. You want to be near the gondola
- 8:58or near the main road where the ski bus runs.
- 9:00Do not get stuck halfway up the mountain on the wrong side of
- 9:03the river unless your hotel has a shuttle.
- 9:06What about the vibe on the street you mentioned earlier?
- 9:08Feels like a British colony. That seems so odd for a country
- 9:11between France and Spain. It's a fascinating cultural
- 9:14bubble. You're in the Pyrenees, you're
- 9:17sandwiched between these Latin cultures, but the dominant
- 9:20accent on the street is from Manchester or Liverpool or
- 9:24London. Why is that?
- 9:25How did that happen? It's a historical commercial
- 9:27strategy, really. British tour operators, Nielsen,
- 9:31Crystal, all those guys, they identified Andorra decades ago
- 9:36as the perfect budget destination for the UK market.
- 9:40They've been pushing it heavily for 30 years.
- 9:43They built the infrastructure, they filled the hotels.
- 9:46So you arrive and the smell is wood smoke and diesel, right?
- 9:50But the sound is English. Is that a good thing or a bad
- 9:53thing? It depends entirely on what you
- 9:55want from your holiday, doesn't it?
- 9:56If you want an exotic cultural immersion where you, you know,
- 10:00struggle to order a croissant and feel like a sophisticated
- 10:03traveler. This isn't it.
- 10:04This is not it. You will be disappointed.
- 10:06You're not going to be practicing your Catalan.
- 10:08But there's a flip side. A.
- 10:09Huge flip side, if you want a stress free family dinner where
- 10:14the waiter understands chicken Nuggets and chips immediately
- 10:17and the ski instructor speaks your kids language natively,
- 10:20it's a godsend. It just lowers the cognitive
- 10:22load of the whole trip. It does.
- 10:23The source called the village ugly pretty.
- 10:26It's functional, it's got Duncree shops, it's got pubs,
- 10:29but it's not a place that hugs you.
- 10:31That's a great way to put it. It's utilitarian.
- 10:33It is a machine that's been built to service the mountain.
- 10:36It's not a destination you would visit in summer just to, you
- 10:39know, look at the architecture. OK, let's move on to the traps,
- 10:42because even if you survive the transfer, there are some
- 10:45specific planning mistakes that can just ruin the trip.
- 10:49And the first one involves where you sleep.
- 10:51This is the capital city mistake, right?
- 10:54A lot of people look at the map or the hotel prices and they see
- 10:58these incredible deals in Andorra Lavella, the capital
- 11:01city. It looks tempting online.
- 11:03It looks fancy. Shopping spas, bright lights and
- 11:07often the hotels are five star for the price of a three star in
- 11:10the actual resort. Exactly, you think oh great,
- 11:13I'll stay in luxury and just commute to the slopes.
- 11:15That idea. Terrible idea.
- 11:17The reality is traffic. Remember this is a narrow
- 11:19valley. The traffic between the capital
- 11:21and the ski lifts in Aaronsol is horrendous.
- 11:25The source mentioned a 45 minute to one hour transit just to get
- 11:29to the gondola. Yes, and imagine doing that
- 11:32standing on a public bus, holding your skis, sweating in
- 11:36your winter gear, surrounded by other frustrated commuters.
- 11:40It just destroys the relaxation of the holiday.
- 11:43You save money on the hotel, but you pay for it in stress and
- 11:46lost time. So the fix is simple, stay in a
- 11:49rental. Or La Masana, which is the next
- 11:52town down but it's connected by a direct gondola.
- 11:54Just do not stay in the capital unless you were there to shop,
- 11:58not to ski. Trap #2 and this is the one that
- 12:02hits the wall at the hardest, the roaming data black hole.
- 12:05Oh, this one is brutal. I didn't realize how severe this
- 12:07was until I saw the building example.
- 12:09This catches so many people out because we're so used to roam
- 12:13like at home in Europe. You.
- 12:15Know, of course. If you live in the UK or the EU,
- 12:17you go to France, Italy, Germany.
- 12:19Your phone just works, you don't even think about it.
- 12:21But because Andorra is not in the EU.
- 12:23It is a black hole for most carriers, especially UK carriers
- 12:26and many EU ones. Andorra falls into rest of world
- 12:30or some special zone for pricing.
- 12:32The local telecom monopoly charges a fortune for foreign
- 12:35access. We saw examples of bills hitting
- 12:376 lbs per MB. £6 per MB to put that in perspective, if your kid
- 12:43watches 1 standard definition YouTube video on the bus ride
- 12:47into the country. Oh no.
- 12:49That could cost you €500. That is a terrifying thought.
- 12:53A €500 Peppa Pig episode. It happens every single season.
- 12:58We see horror stories on the forums constantly, someone
- 13:01forgets to toggle the switch, they scroll Instagram for 10
- 13:04minutes and their holiday budget is just go on.
- 13:07So what is the fix? What do you do?
- 13:08The fix is absolute discipline. Turn off data roaming before you
- 13:12even see the Border Patrol by a local esim.
- 13:15There are apps like Aerilo or a Holafly.
- 13:17Or just stick to Wi-Fi but do not trust your home plan unless
- 13:21you have triple checked the fine print.
- 13:22OK, trap #3 involves leaving the Sunday exit.
- 13:27Yes, the Great Escape. This is a traffic flow issue and
- 13:30Dora is a massive destination for day trippers from France and
- 13:33Spain, right? They don't come to ski, they
- 13:36come to fill their trunks with cheap alcohol, cigarettes and
- 13:38fuel. They just flood the country on
- 13:40weekends. So Sunday afternoon, everyone
- 13:42tries to leave it once. Exactly.
- 13:44The queue to get out of the country can be miles long.
- 13:47It's a total bottleneck. If you have a flight to catch in
- 13:50Barcelona at 7:00 PM and you leave Aaronsol at 3:00 PM, you
- 13:54might miss it. It'll be sitting in a gridlock
- 13:57of cars filled with cheap whiskey.
- 13:58So what's the strategy? Ideally, fly midweek.
- 14:02If you absolutely have to leave on a Sunday, leave before 7:00
- 14:05AM or wait until after 800 PM. Just do not join the herd at 4.0
- 14:10PM. Got it.
- 14:11OK, let's talk about money. The whole reputation of our
- 14:14insole is that it's cheap. Is it actually cheap or is that
- 14:17just marketing? We need to define cheap.
- 14:19You know it is not Bulgaria cheap.
- 14:21OK, if you go to Bansco you are paying significantly less for
- 14:24everything. But compared to the big French
- 14:27or Swiss resorts, yes it is western year of affordable.
- 14:31So let's breakdown the costs. What are we looking at for
- 14:33accommodation? Let's say for a family of four,
- 14:36if you go low budget a self catered apartment in La Masana,
- 14:39you could do it for 800 to €1000 a week.
- 14:42That is very hard to be in the Alps.
- 14:44Very hard. A similar box in Val Thorn's
- 14:47might be double that easily. And what's the sweet spot?
- 14:50The mid range. The Sweet Spot is a three star
- 14:53hotel in Erinzel half board so breakfast to dinner are
- 14:56included. You're looking at around 1800 to
- 14:59€2200 for the family for the week.
- 15:02Which, when you factor in that you aren't paying for dinner
- 15:04every night, is pretty decent. It is, but the real value wins.
- 15:10They're in the day-to-day spending.
- 15:12This is where the duty free status actually impacts your
- 15:15wallet. The alcohol prices jumped out at
- 15:17me. A beer on the slopes for four or
- 15:19five euros. Compare that to 10 or 12 euros
- 15:21in Core Chevelle or Valdez Air. It really adds up.
- 15:25It does. A bottle of gin in the
- 15:27supermarket is €8, coffee is under €2.00.
- 15:30You don't feel like you are being gouged every time you open
- 15:33your wallet. And lunch on the mountain.
- 15:35A family of four can eat for €60 if you do sandwiches, maybe 100
- 15:39if you do a grill. Again, reasonable.
- 15:41What about the skiing itself? Lift passes.
- 15:44An adult six day pass is around €260.
- 15:47Kids under 6 ski free. Though there is some paperwork
- 15:51involved, you have to bring birth certificates to the ticket
- 15:54office. Good to know.
- 15:55But that's about 30 to 40% cheaper than the major Alpine
- 15:59resorts. And ski school.
- 16:01This seemed to be a major selling point in the data.
- 16:03This is the massive value in Group lessons for five days are
- 16:08around 130 to €150. In France you are easily paying
- 16:13€250 or more for the same thing and the quality is often better
- 16:18because of that language factor we discussed.
- 16:20So the daily burn rate is just significantly lower across the
- 16:23board. Exactly.
- 16:25But and there is always a but you have to factor in that
- 16:28transfer cost we talked about. Yes, A.
- 16:30Private transfer for a family is expensive.
- 16:32You're looking at about €400 return for a taxi or a private
- 16:36van. That's a big chunk of change
- 16:37that eats into the savings on the beer.
- 16:40It does. You can take the bus for about
- 16:41€160 total for a family. But then you're dealing with the
- 16:45motion sickness and the luggage hassle, so you have to do the
- 16:48math. You save on the resort costs,
- 16:51but you pay a premium on the logistics.
- 16:53To get there, you have to view the budget holistically.
- 16:56Let's pivot to the experience itself.
- 16:58We've arrived, we've saved some money.
- 17:00Now we are actually on the ground.
- 17:03What are the safety and comfort factors?
- 17:05Well, in terms of crime, it's virtually non existent.
- 17:08It's one of the safest countries in the world.
- 17:10That's great, but there is an environmental hazard that the
- 17:13sources highlight repeatedly. The ice.
- 17:16Because of that dark valley floor we mentioned.
- 17:19Right. The sun doesn't melt the snow on
- 17:21the pavements. Effectively, they become, as a
- 17:24source puts it, lethal sheets of ice.
- 17:26Oh wow. It's not fluffy snow on the
- 17:28sidewalk, it's hard packed glacier ice.
- 17:31So leave the fashion sneakers at home.
- 17:33Absolutely. This is not the place for moon
- 17:35boots with no grip or smooth sole.
- 17:37Training cleaners, wear hiking boots with good tread or even
- 17:40buy those little crampon spikes that slip over your shoes.
- 17:43Walking to dinner shouldn't be an extreme sport, but an errand
- 17:47soul. If you aren't prepared, it can
- 17:49be. We read multiple reports of
- 17:51people slipping and injuring themselves just walking to the
- 17:54pub. And medically, you mentioned the
- 17:56border changes things. This is critical since it's not
- 17:59in the EU. Your E, Chi E or GHIC card, that
- 18:03European health card everyone carries does not work here.
- 18:06So if you break a leg, you are paying out of pocket.
- 18:09The medical centers on the slopes are private.
- 18:12They are excellent modern facilities, but they are
- 18:14businesses. You need specific travel
- 18:16insurance that covers winter sports and, crucially,
- 18:19repatriation from Andorra. Repatriation is the keyword
- 18:23there. It is if you need to be
- 18:25airlifted out or taken by ambulance to a specialist
- 18:27hospital in Barcelona or Toulouse.
- 18:29That bill is astronomical. Without the right insurance,
- 18:33we're talking 10s of thousands of euros.
- 18:34So do not skip the insurance. Do not skip the insurance.
- 18:37As a detail that could so easily be missed.
- 18:39Good to know. Now let's talk about the skiing.
- 18:41The sources call Arensol the University of Skiing.
- 18:44Why? Because it is perfectly designed
- 18:47for learning. The terrain layout is just
- 18:50unintimidating. It's wide open and gentle OK,
- 18:53and the ski school is highly, highly praised, the instructors
- 18:58almost all speaking as fluently, often because they are British
- 19:01or from the Commonwealth or South America.
- 19:03That makes a huge difference for kids.
- 19:05Huge. If a four year old is cold and
- 19:07scared, they need to be able to communicate in their own
- 19:09language and they have this baby club or snow garden for the 4 to
- 19:148 year olds that is fenced off and safe.
- 19:16It's a very contained environment.
- 19:17You can literally sit at the cafe and watch your kids learn.
- 19:20But what if you're an expert? What if you are an expert skier?
- 19:25That's the limitation. If you are an expert, the dad
- 19:28who shreds as the source puts it, you will get bored.
- 19:31By day three. Easily, maybe day 2.
- 19:34The terrain is limited. It's a resort for comfort
- 19:36cruising, not for challenging yourself on steep collars or
- 19:39deep off pissed. They're only a handful of black
- 19:41runs, and even those would be considered red runs in France.
- 19:44But there were some highlights mentioned.
- 19:46It's not just a nursery slope. The connection to Powell seems
- 19:49to be the saving grace. It is.
- 19:51There's a big cable car that connects Aransol to Powell, the
- 19:54neighboring resort. It's a spectacular ride, great
- 19:58views and Pal just feels different.
- 20:00It's wider, it's sunnier and you get to ski through trees.
- 20:03It makes the resort feel twice as big.
- 20:06And there was one specific run mentioned, Limurad, yes.
- 20:09OK, this is the run that goes from the very top of the resort
- 20:13all the way down to the village. At hundred 550 meters.
- 20:17It's a 1000 meter vertical drop. That sounds like a proper leg
- 20:20burner. It is.
- 20:21You ski through the trees, pass old barns.
- 20:23It feels like real travel skiing.
- 20:26The source described doing this at sunset when the valley is
- 20:29turning blue and skiing right up to the bar at the bottom.
- 20:31That sounds amazing. That's the magic moment.
- 20:33That's when you understand why people come back.
- 20:35But it wasn't all magic. The food on the mountain.
- 20:38Yikes, cafeteria sludge. That was the quote.
- 20:41That was the quote, and it's harsh.
- 20:43It is harsh. But accurate, according to the
- 20:46report, because the Mountain restaurants have a captive
- 20:49audience. The quality is just low.
- 20:52Mass produced, lukewarm spaghetti Bolognese, overpriced
- 20:56burgers that tastes like cardboard.
- 20:58It's purely functional feeling. So what is the recommendation?
- 21:02What do you do? Pack a lunch, go to the
- 21:05supermarket, buy a baguette, some cheese and some ham and eat
- 21:09on a rock in the sun. Or find the one decent Cal
- 21:13themed restaurant at the top of PAL called the Cowbella.
- 21:16But generally save your money for dinner in the village.
- 21:19The On Mountain dining is a solid 3 out of 10.
- 21:22And the Apreski, I assume with all the cheap booze it's a big
- 21:25party. It is, but it's a very bar
- 21:27focused party, and for families that's actually a downside.
- 21:30There isn't much else to do. There's no big Aquatic Center in
- 21:33the village, no cinema, no bowling alley.
- 21:36If you aren't in a pub, you are in your hotel room, right?
- 21:38The source painted this picture of kids playing Uno in a pub
- 21:41while the parents drink cheap beer.
- 21:43Which is fine, but it's not exactly Disney World, you know?
- 21:46Yeah, you have to be OK with creating your own entertainment.
- 21:49OK, so we've got a pretty clear picture of Aaron's soul now, but
- 21:51how does it stack up against the alternatives?
- 21:54If Aaron Soul is the budget British University, what are the
- 21:58other options? Well, the most obvious one is
- 22:00right next door Grand Valero. So so do.
- 22:03Or El Tartar. And who goes there?
- 22:05People with higher budgets who get bored easily.
- 22:06It's bigger, it's posture. The hotels are NASAR but you're
- 22:10paying 30 to 40% more. If money isn't the primary
- 22:14constraint, so do it is objectively better skiing.
- 22:19It's world class. Aaron Soul is charmingly
- 22:22provincial. What about the foodies if
- 22:24someone really wants that tapas experience?
- 22:26Then you go to Baquera Beret in Spain.
- 22:28The King of Spain skis there right he.
- 22:30Does, and the food reflects that.
- 22:31You get tapas on the slopes, Spanish chic, better wine, but
- 22:35the logistics are harder. It's further from the airports,
- 22:38but if you care about culture and cuisine, Baqarah beats
- 22:41Orensel hands down. And for those who just want that
- 22:43pretty timber framed village, that classic look.
- 22:47Outback in Austria it's often voted the prettiest village in
- 22:50Austria. Similar transfer time, similar
- 22:53cost, maybe slightly higher on food, but you get that modern
- 22:56Austrian infrastructure and visual charm that are insult
- 22:59just lacks. You lose the cheap.
- 23:01Gem You lose the cheap gem, but you gain the cute village photos
- 23:04for Instagram. So we've arrived at the verdict,
- 23:07the is it worth it matrix. Let's run through the profile so
- 23:10you can self select to. Do it.
- 23:12First up, the backpacker, the person purely looking for the
- 23:16cheapest snow possible. Verdict No.
- 23:19Why? The accommodation is geared for
- 23:21weekly rentals, not hostile nights, and the ski passes,
- 23:25while cheaper than France, are still expensive compared to
- 23:28Eastern Europe. If you're a backpacker, go to
- 23:31band school in Bulgaria or JASNA in Slovakia.
- 23:33You'll get more for your money and the nightlife is Wilder.
- 23:36Next up, the luxury traveler. Verdict Hard no.
- 23:41Because of the brutalism. The concrete, the bad food, the
- 23:43brutal transfer. If you want luxury, you go to
- 23:45Core, Chevelle, St. Moritz or even Soul do Aaron.
- 23:49Soul will just annoy you. You'll feel like you're
- 23:50compromising constantly. There's only one five star hotel
- 23:54in the area, the Diana Park, and even that struggles to compete
- 23:58with True Alpine luxury. The mid range couple.
- 24:02Verdict. Maybe.
- 24:04That's a soft verdict. It is.
- 24:06It depends entirely on their skill level.
- 24:08If they are beginners learning together, it's great fun.
- 24:11If they can already ski, they will kill each other out of
- 24:14boredom by day three. And finally, the family, the
- 24:18target demographic. Verdict.
- 24:20Yes, 100%. Why is it such a slam dunk for
- 24:23them? Because it is a functional tool.
- 24:26That's the best way to describe it.
- 24:28You are there to build skills without going bankrupt.
- 24:30You can afford the private lessons, you can afford the
- 24:33gear, the logistics. Once you were there, just work
- 24:35for kids. It is safe, it contained and it
- 24:37is English speaking. The source called it the
- 24:39University of Skiing. You go there to graduate and
- 24:42then you move on to the Alps. Exactly.
- 24:44You do two or three years in a rental, the kids get confident,
- 24:47you save a ton of money, and then you book the expensive trip
- 24:50to Val Thorens once they can actually appreciate the big
- 24:52slopes. It's part of a life cycle.
- 24:54You don't start at the top. You earn your stripes in a
- 24:56rental. So if you are going to do it,
- 24:58what is the summary strategy, the winning formula?
- 25:01OK, grab a pen. One.
- 25:03Book a hotel near the gondola and check the elevation.
- 25:07Check the hill 2. Swallow the cost of a private
- 25:10transfer to avoid the vomit comet.
- 25:13Three. Put the kids in ski school from
- 25:1610:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Four.
- 25:18Ski over to Powell in the afternoon for the sun 5.
- 25:22Eat early, sleep early. And buy the gin.
- 25:24And buy the cheap gin, it helps with the sore legs.
- 25:26You know, it seems like Ernsel's greatest strength is actually
- 25:29its lack of pretension. I think that's right.
- 25:31Yeah, it has a scrappy charm. It's honest.
- 25:33It doesn't pretend to be Aspen. No, it knows it is a tax free,
- 25:38stone clad, British loving ski hill in a dead end valley.
- 25:42And sometimes that honesty is actually more relaxing than the
- 25:45high pressure glitz of the big resorts.
- 25:47It's the ski resort equivalent of a trusty station wagon.
- 25:50It's not a Ferrari, but it gets the whole family where they need
- 25:53to go safely and reliably. Perfectly put.
- 25:56That's all for this deep dive into the budget slopes of
- 25:58Andorra. Whether you're booking that
- 26:00transfer or just dreaming of snow, thanks for listening.
- 26:03Safe travels, see you next time.
