- 0:25All right, everybody, you're listening to the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show,
- 0:28the longest running weekly Philly sports podcast show in the world. That's right over
- 0:32ten years strong. We've got some great content coming your way. It is
- 0:36July nineteenth, twenty twenty three. Hope you enjoy these subject matters we're gonna
- 0:41be getting into in the world Philly sports. Here I am Jeff Warren and
- 0:44I'm here with my good buddy Len hunts Sicker. Len, Buddy, you're
- 0:48now a homeowner, man, Congratulations, and just let everybody know, Yeah,
- 0:52we're so now. It's like all the fun that goes along with that.
- 0:55So we're in there. We're in the moving process of moving, cleaning,
- 1:00decluttering, which the decluttering is the only like really good part because it's
- 1:03like, okay, doesn't haven't opened that been in two years? Get rid
- 1:06of it exactly. For someone like me, it's kind of like a bit
- 1:08of a pack rat, like it's it's necessary, and it's kind of the
- 1:12only soothing part of this that I think I genuinely am good with is just
- 1:18the decluttering. And they're like, I'm finally making a decision that I'm getting
- 1:21rid of this crap, Like so, yeah, you've been a pack rat
- 1:23for most of your life growing up, And I remember my twenties and stuff
- 1:27like I would just keep stuff that I thought was sentimental to me, and
- 1:30then like fifteen years later I'd look in and be like, why did I
- 1:34decide to keep this, like or yeah, you have a thought of like,
- 1:37well I might need this, like yeah, And it's not We're not
- 1:40talking hoarder. Hoarders is not like you know, twenty years of stacks in
- 1:44newspaper and you know, uh, you know, meat for lunch, meat
- 1:48from like eight years ago. You know, collecting juice in the fridge.
- 1:52It's it's not that, but it's just like, you know, you have
- 1:55something you're like, even if it's like a piece of paperwork or love here,
- 1:59like I might need that down a rude, I don't want to lose
- 2:00that, like you know, you just you just keep stuff you do.
- 2:05And so it's it's getting rid of all that stuff. I have been becoming
- 2:08more of a minimalist as I'm getting older, and I don't know if just
- 2:12what it's what happens, you know when you start to hit hit midlife,
- 2:15you know, but I am becoming more and more of a minimalist. I
- 2:17just don't want a lot of stuff. I don't want a lot of clutter.
- 2:22I want things to look nice, you know. I want things to
- 2:24look nice for when I'm in my house and when people come over, and
- 2:28I just want to be comfortable. I don't want to look at stuff,
- 2:30you know what I mean, Like, I don't want to look at a
- 2:31lot of stuff. That's kind of the agreement that me and my wife have
- 2:35in terms of like Christmas and birthdays and stuff like that is, don't buy
- 2:39me stuff. Get me an experience, Take me to a concert, take
- 2:43me to a ball game, taking a like, take me somewhere, let's
- 2:46do something rather than having physical stuff. I love it. I really do.
- 2:52Think. That's how much Shell and I are, honestly, honest to
- 2:54God, that's how we are at the point where it's like, I mean,
- 2:59I'm a bad person to shop for because if I if I need or
- 3:02want something, I just go get it. I don't wait. So I'm
- 3:06like the worst person to have to buy gifts for. Um. And since
- 3:09they're like, yeah, I don't need stuff. If I need it,
- 3:13I've probably already gone out and got it, So yeah, I don't need
- 3:15more like that kind of stuff. I love just giving money exactly. Just
- 3:20give us money, just give me money. Look, I love all of
- 3:23our Philly sports teams. I love the Eagles, but my god, I
- 3:27don't need another Eagles knickknack. Yeah, holidays, I don't need it.
- 3:31Family and friends, I don't need it. Okay. But but you're but
- 3:36they know you as that guy because you have a show and you're talking about
- 3:38this stuff. So it's like, oh, well, Jeff likes this.
- 3:40We're gonna get them. That's and that's you're gonna have to actually say something
- 3:45to those people like you are because they're just they're thinking the stuff to get
- 3:50you, and that's what they know of you, and that's what they're gonna
- 3:53do. So yes, and I feel it's such a conversation. I know,
- 3:55I feel like it's in great right now. Yeah, but you're not,
- 4:00You're You're you're being realistic about you know, how much stuff you want
- 4:04to have. It's not you know, Yep, I don't think that's being
- 4:08any grid. I think it's just being realistic. I can't wait to come
- 4:11out to your new house. I want I want to invite. Yeah,
- 4:15once once we get everything to where it's everything's put away and presentable and all
- 4:19that stuff. Yeah, well, definitely looking forward to having people over all
- 4:23right, all right, good, all right, I want to watch a
- 4:26Phillies game in your house at some point down the road. We're certainly going
- 4:30to talk about the Phillies on this show. Major League Baseball as well,
- 4:33and Len, we're gonna be talking some Philadelphia unions and you're on. Fact
- 4:38of the matter is that their head coach, Jim Kurtney, just got a
- 4:41contract extension through twenty twenty six, So we're gonna talk about that for a
- 4:44little bit, some quick flyers talk. With a two year contract extension given
- 4:48a Noah Cads Tony D'Angelo placed on waivers, gonna get into some Sixers talk,
- 4:54some NBA talk as well. There, and well, we're thrown down
- 4:56on the table this week Vince Quinn from The Bell and the Birdman podcast.
- 5:00He's gonna join us to talk about this upcoming Eagles season as we're just a
- 5:03couple of weeks away from the start of training camp. So Len, let's
- 5:08get into the Phillies. Let's get into some Phillies major League Baseball talk here,
- 5:12and really really quick, I wanted to start off the Major League Baseball
- 5:15discussion with. It was something I believe it was Jason Stark, something he
- 5:19just put out there talking about the fact that there should be what's called ay
- 5:24quote legends home run derby, Legends of Baseball home run derby. And he
- 5:30was talking about this during the All Star break, possibly having you know,
- 5:34Ken Griffy Junior, you know, David Ortiz, Albert Poholes, you know
- 5:41these guys, even Jim Tobey, you know, swinging the bat at their
- 5:46age, and what that might look like. Because Ken Griffy Junior was like
- 5:48talking some trash about this and he was just he was doing awesome Ken Griffy
- 5:56Junior stuff. I love him, I love him, and I would love
- 5:58to see him swing the bat, even at his age right now. But
- 6:00I was thinking about this, I'm like, would this actually be good for
- 6:02the game of baseball? Would it be good for us older guys who would
- 6:05be a little bit nostalgic to see Griffy or Tease, Tomay and Albert Poolholes
- 6:12out there swinging the bat at their age. But then I was like,
- 6:14you know what, there's gonna be a certain level of expectation for US fans
- 6:17about what they are going to do or what they don't do out there,
- 6:21and could it be more pathetic or could it be a disappointment for us watching
- 6:27these old guys swinging the bat tried because they're not going to be hit.
- 6:30I highly doubt they're gonna be hitting home runs that are like over four hundred
- 6:33feet. Yeah, you know what I mean. So I don't know,
- 6:35what do you do? You what did you think about this when you kind
- 6:39of heard this news. I mean it might initially be fun, but I
- 6:44don't know, like when, like I don't know, like how how long
- 6:49is it going to be before the novelty wears off? Like Okay, if
- 6:53you have a let's say you have the first time you're doing it this with
- 6:56that foresome griffy or tease tomy pooholes. I think people would be interested in
- 7:00it. But it's also incumbent upon upon these players. You know, you
- 7:04have some guys that are just like, Okay, my career is over.
- 7:09I don't necessarily have to be in prime physical condition anymore. Yeah, I
- 7:13can screw off a little bit and then, like I don't know, if
- 7:15you watch an actual home run derby with actual major league players in their prime,
- 7:21you're swinging and swinging and swinging and swinging. Those guys get tired,
- 7:26they do, and they're they're at the top of their profession, in their
- 7:29physical prime. So you know, you're gonna have older guys that, you
- 7:32know, maybe aren't. You know, I'm not saying they're just gonna,
- 7:35you know, just sit on the couch and eat potato chips as soon as
- 7:39they retire, but you know, they don't have to be in peak physical
- 7:43condition anymore. So if the guys that are the top of their you know,
- 7:46game, are getting tired, what are these guys going to do?
- 7:49You know what I mean? So it could be fun, but I feel
- 7:54like it could veer more towards the pathetic more often than not. That's what
- 7:59I was. And it sucks because you know, you don't want to remember.
- 8:03You want to remember Jim Tomy is basically being Paul Bunyan in a baseball
- 8:07uniform, and you want to remember Griffy and that and that, you know,
- 8:11prettiest left handed swing of all time. I mean, that's how you
- 8:15want to remember, you know, these guys, and would that tarnish it?
- 8:18Is my question? And that's my question. Too, and I think
- 8:22it kind of would. So it leads me to the conclusion for me as
- 8:26a baseball fan, you know what, I don't want to see it because
- 8:30I don't want that tarnishment on my break. Could be fun, but I
- 8:33mean, I think these guys have to, like, if they're gonna do
- 8:35it, I would think that they're gonna have to, like, you know,
- 8:39take it seriously. I mean, it is a fun event, and
- 8:43I'm sure they're going to be, you know, talking trash to each other
- 8:45and that's all you know, the fun of ragging on each other and all
- 8:48that stuff. But like you know, if you come out there and lay
- 8:52an egg, everybody's going to instantly be like, uh, this is bad.
- 8:56Yeah, I think so, I would think they want to avoid that.
- 8:58That's last thing you want to do is take a chance with something like
- 9:01that, especially when you're trying to build Major League Baseball's brand, not kill
- 9:05it. Yeah. All right, well let's get let's talk about Phillies really
- 9:09quick here Lynn too, because as they're coming out of this All Star Break
- 9:13a little hot. Yes, they did lose to the Brewers tonight. I
- 9:18was not watching that. I wasn't watching the game. My daughters wanted to
- 9:22watch a movie. We had to watch The Kissing Booth. I don't know
- 9:28what that is. You don't want to I don't. I was like,
- 9:31oh my god. It's like it's like, yeah, boy, I'm gonna
- 9:35be watching these movies for the rest of my life, Lisa, until they're
- 9:41eighteen and out of the house. Yes, yes, So I did not
- 9:43have a chance to watch Phillies Brewers tonight. Phillies did lose to the Brewers,
- 9:46but initially coming out of this break, this All Star break kind of
- 9:50hot. I mean, they really took it to the Padres, and they
- 9:54seem to just give the Padres a difficult time over the course of this past
- 9:58year. It's like, oh my gosh, just given the Padres a rough
- 10:01time. So I wanted to just kind of talk about our thoughts from what
- 10:03we really want to see from this team in July, in August, and
- 10:07September. And for me, Len the one thing I really want to see
- 10:13with this team, and a particular player on this team is Trey Turner,
- 10:18the eleven year, three hundred million dollars guy doing more than certainly what he
- 10:24has been doing. You know, I don't think the Phillies imagined when they
- 10:28signed him that it would be like this coming at you know, first eighty
- 10:33eight games of the season. His slash lines are two forty seven, two
- 10:35ninety nine, and three eighty nine. He's on pace to set a new
- 10:41career high in strikeouts and is running an outside the zone swing percentage of forty
- 10:48percent, which is over his career average of thirty one percent. It's crazy.
- 10:52He's trying to do too much and it's getting in his head very much
- 10:58like Nick Castianos. I think what happened to him. I was going to
- 11:01say that is exactly yeah, and hopefully, you know, maybe next year.
- 11:05I mean I don't want to already think ahead to next year with these
- 11:07guys, but you know, maybe maybe that's what happens this year for him,
- 11:11and next year he just settles the hell down like Cassianos did, and
- 11:16you know, comes back to the trade turner that we all thought we were
- 11:18getting. But yeah, now, I as you were saying it, I
- 11:20mean that that's the exact parallel that was in my head too, Yeah,
- 11:24because if he turns things around here and it seems like he is too Lynn
- 11:28because in thirty four games since the start of June, he's been slashing two
- 11:31sixty six, three twenty nine, and four twenty seven, So we are
- 11:37seeing him kind of turn the corner perhaps a little bit. But if we
- 11:41start to see the trade turner of old, if we start to see the
- 11:45trade turner that the Phillies thought and the fans thought we were going to get
- 11:48at the beginning of this season, then I think this team is in a
- 11:50very good position, not just you know, not just in terms of making
- 11:56the postseason, but possibly getting getting through, you know, maybe a couple
- 12:01of rounds of the postseason. And I think a lot of it is going
- 12:03to be contingent on Trede Turner. That's my thoughts here during the second half
- 12:07of the season, Land, I think he really needs to step things up
- 12:09for this team to have the ability to really get through the postseason. Yeah,
- 12:15he does, but you know, you're you're starting to see signs that,
- 12:18you know, maybe this team is starting to come around a little bit.
- 12:22I mean, I was listening something the other day and they were saying
- 12:26basically what the Phillies had done over the past couple of weeks, I mean,
- 12:31is a one hundred and sixteen win pace, you know, given you
- 12:35know, what they've done over the past few weeks. So I mean,
- 12:39clearly things are starting to click, you know, tonight's result notwithstanding, but
- 12:43there are a lot of games where they get behind and they they are never
- 12:48out of it. They scratch and they call and they come back, and
- 12:50that's kind of I mean, it's it's you know, you don't want to
- 12:54fall behind, but it is an endearing thing of a team. And you
- 12:58know, the four star pitchers, Nola, Wheeler, Walker Squarez didn't get
- 13:03off to the best starts this year. There they are now rounding into form
- 13:05well, so you know, hopefully they can continue what they're doing hopefully you
- 13:09know, um, you know, if you have Turner get into the groove
- 13:13a little bit here, um, you know, Bryce finds his power stroke
- 13:16a little bit more there, um, because I mean, the the slash
- 13:20numbers are good, but you know, the power numbers, you know,
- 13:24clearly aren't what we thought they would be yet. Um. I know he's
- 13:28you know, he's obviously coming off Tommy John So that's a that's a thing
- 13:31too. But you know, things are trending up for for for this team,
- 13:35I think because it's a lot of guys that Okay, maybe they didn't
- 13:39have the best start, but if those guys are starting to find their gear,
- 13:43then this team is gonna, i think, take off a little bit.
- 13:46I'm not saying I'm not saying they're gonna They're not gonna catch the Braves.
- 13:48I mean, you can pretty much pencil the Braves in as the nlo's
- 13:52champion at this point. But there's no reason they can't go on a run
- 13:56and maybe be, you know, the first wild card team. As it
- 14:00is right now, they're the third and last wild car team the season were
- 14:03to end today, Yeah, but there's no reason they can't be firmly in
- 14:07a comfortable playoff position by the time this season ends. Absolutely, And I
- 14:11think it's also important for us to note too that the film, it's my
- 14:15understanding that the Phillies have recommended Tommy John surgery for Andrew Painter. And we've
- 14:20been kind of talking about this on the show, even on the table talk
- 14:24shows recently, Lend and those interviews that I've been doing in terms of talking
- 14:28about him, we just we're just not going to see him this season,
- 14:31you know, and who knows if and when we're going to see him next
- 14:35season as well. The Andrew Painter experiment is not going to be happening anytime
- 14:39soon. He needs to get healthy and that that's just a reality that we
- 14:43all have to live with here. Yeah, and look, you know they
- 14:48you always want to try and and you know, exhaust all options before you
- 14:52go under the knife. With Tommy John, I know some people were complaining,
- 14:56Oh I knew this a couple of months ago, blah blah blah.
- 15:00You know, they wanted to see if you know, he could just rest
- 15:03and have his arm you know, be okay, And that didn't happen,
- 15:07so okay, So you know, you you you found out exhausted your options.
- 15:11Now you go into the knife. In terms of next year, I
- 15:13mean you might see him, you know, on some practice fields towards the
- 15:18end of next year, but you're looking at spring training of of twenty five
- 15:24with Andrew Painter at this point, Um, he's not going to help this
- 15:28team and obviously not this year, and he's going to be working back,
- 15:31you know, through some stuff, uh and towards the end of twenty twenty
- 15:35four, so you know, maybe he pitches some minor league games, I
- 15:39don't know, but he's gonna be probably down in Florida rehabbing most if not
- 15:43all, of twenty twenty four. So that's just what it is. And
- 15:48you know, you're you're like, oh my god, you know this guy,
- 15:50he's you know, he went he's never going to pitch. He's twenty
- 15:54so exactly, Okay, at beginning of a twenty being of the twenty five
- 15:58season, he's twenty two years old. That's still pretty damn young. So
- 16:02let him. You know, we kind of all knew this was heading here.
- 16:06Okay, you have to play the games, you have to you have
- 16:08to exhaust the options. We've done that. Here we are. Now we
- 16:11can get this fixed and you know, get him to where he needs to
- 16:15be, and then there we go for twenty five. Um. Well,
- 16:19I mean I'm kind of in a way, I'm kind of glad it's happening
- 16:22because now it forces them to, like, you know, well, I
- 16:25talked about this in the beginning of the year. Oh my god, they're
- 16:27going to depend on this kid to be the fifth starter. That's definitively out
- 16:30the door for um, for this year and for next year, as it
- 16:34probably should be, because I don't think you know, mick Abel is going
- 16:37to be you know, I like him, But I don't think he's going
- 16:41to be, you know, an option at the beginning of next season eithers
- 16:45because there's still some seasoning that has to happen. So you need veteran guys
- 16:49for this rotation for now. Hopefully by next year, by the middle of
- 16:55next year, Abel and McGarry are able to maybe fill in a little bit.
- 16:57But if you're on them at the beginning of next year, I think
- 17:02you're hoping for something that's not going to happen. Yeah, And I think
- 17:06when it comes to these type injuries to Lend, there's something to be said
- 17:08for how guys get through it, not just from the physical aspect, but
- 17:11from the mental aspect of it as well. How he Andrew Painter may mature
- 17:17from a mental standpoint getting through this injury. You know, of course he's
- 17:21going to be going through rehab, but how does it affect his baseball game
- 17:25from a mental standpoint. Yes, he's not going to be on the field,
- 17:27he's not going to be pitching, he's not going to be having a
- 17:30glove on, you know, just doing what he has done for most of
- 17:34his life. How is he able to handle that? I think in these
- 17:37situations and in these player predicaments. When it comes to health, We've seen
- 17:42over the years that there are certain players who can handle the adversity of an
- 17:48injury very well, hence Bryce Harper. Others cannot handle it as well.
- 17:52Their game falls off from a mental standpoint. It takes its toll on them.
- 17:56And that's what we're going to see from Andrew Painter in the future,
- 17:59and I think they're I think that needs to be talked about more in terms
- 18:03of the Dry Painter discourse and and just injuries in general. I don't think
- 18:07we talk about the mental aspect of injuries as much as we should in professional
- 18:11sports. And that's an area where I think, you know, if you're
- 18:15the Phillies, you have I mean Harper to an extent, but maybe more
- 18:18so some of your pitchers. I don't know the history of of all the
- 18:22Phillies pitchers, who's had Tommy John and who hasn't, But if they have,
- 18:26you know, you have those guys check in on him and just you
- 18:29know, see where his head's at and just say, maybe relate some stories
- 18:33from when they were rehabbing and stuff like that, just just you know,
- 18:37don't make this guy feels like he's you know, off to the side on
- 18:41an island by himself, you know, just wandering off into the wilderness.
- 18:45You know, check in on him and make sure you know he's preparing the
- 18:49way he should and doing things he should and in a good space mentally.
- 18:53I mean, that's that's the best thing you can do for for a young
- 18:56player like that or any any player like that. Really, it's going through
- 19:00rehabs. You gotta check in on him, absolutely, absolutely, all right,
- 19:03Well, Len, before we get to our first break, we wanted
- 19:07to talk some Philadelphia Union as we're moving along here in the show. The
- 19:12Philadelphia Union and their head coach, Jim Curtin came to an agreement on a
- 19:18multi year contract extension that's guaranteed through two thousand twenty six. And as as
- 19:25many of us know, Jim Curtin is the second highest, second longest,
- 19:30I should say, ten yard coach in Major League Soccer. He's a two
- 19:33time winner of the CG I think a CG. Schmidt Coach of the Year
- 19:38Award. I hope I said that right, because you know what I'm looking
- 19:41at the agenda. Okay, you know how I screw up names all the
- 19:45time in terms of pronunciation, lend. I screwed up Jim Curtin's name on
- 19:48our freaking outline. I spelt it like the curtains you'll put up in your
- 19:52freaking living room. Jesus, what the freaking heck, I stink. I
- 19:56can't even get it right on the outline. If nobody, if you didn't
- 20:00say anything, nobody would know it. That's true, that's true. Why
- 20:03did I just give it up? I don't know. I don't know what.
- 20:07You're good, God, Good God again, he's got He's got so
- 20:11many wins one hundred and twenty seven wins during his ten year coaching career with
- 20:17the Philadelphia Union. It was interesting, len I had my first table talk
- 20:22interview show this past week about the Philadelphia Union, and it was great.
- 20:26Had a great guest, Josh Schuster from Philadelphia soccernow dot com. He came
- 20:32on, we talked about this team, and we got into Jim Curtin's contract
- 20:37a little bit. And I think it's interesting how there was a lot of
- 20:41public perception out there that he just might not be the guy. But I
- 20:45think over the years, you know, we've seen how he's been able to
- 20:48develop certain players, you know, even whether you look at Kranz and what
- 20:52he's been doing throughout the course of this season. Other players, Martinez,
- 20:56Jose Martinez, my gosh, you know, he would an incredible talent.
- 21:00He has been for this team as well. UM Jim Curtin is a developmental
- 21:04type of coach and there's a reason why he's been around for so long.
- 21:08And I think this is a great extension for this team. And he got
- 21:14him to the finals last year. You know, who knows if he can
- 21:17do it again in the future, but he's developing young talent and it's really
- 21:21good to see. Man. Yeah, I am, I'm I'm very happy
- 21:26they made this move. This guy, like he said, a two time
- 21:30coach of the Year in MLS two out of the past three years is when
- 21:33he's wonted. So yeah, this is this is probably the best coach in
- 21:37Major League Soccer right now. So anytime you have the best of anything,
- 21:41yeah, I mean you want to you want to keep that UM. I
- 21:44don't know where they're at with UM Sporting director Ernest Tanner's UM contract extension,
- 21:49if they are working on that now or whatever, but to me, having
- 21:53that kind of leadership duo locked up for the foreseeable future is to me,
- 22:00paramount to the you know, to keeping this club together and keeping it up
- 22:04towards the top of the of MLS where we want them to be. UM.
- 22:08Just from a structural standpoint, yeah, I mean, the Union just
- 22:12seem so well run. And that wasn't always the case, you know,
- 22:15they were you know, earlier in the in the club's history, they were
- 22:19looked at as cheap and you know, just kind of directionless. This is
- 22:25obviously not you know, a ton of history to go off of here,
- 22:30but in terms of you know, having the right people running your team,
- 22:33this is the golden era of this of this organization, having Panner and Kurtin
- 22:37in there. So I mean, to me, until they fall off,
- 22:41you know, noticeably, I want both those guys here. So I'm happy
- 22:45about Curtin. UM. You know, they've been and even like you said,
- 22:49developmentally, he's been able to bring guys along there. Their um,
- 22:53their academy is pretty much the envy of Major League Soccer. They're considered one
- 23:00the best, you know, academies for young players to come up through in
- 23:03all of MLS. UM they've graduated people to Europe, you know, which
- 23:07you know is the ultimate goal for basically any club and any any player is
- 23:12to get those guys going up through Europe to Europe and getting more money,
- 23:15you know, transfer money back into your organization to build it up. So,
- 23:19uh, the fact that they're doing that, those are the guys you
- 23:22want to keep um so, I mean for as long as they can,
- 23:26because they're not They're not one of those seems like LAFC that you know,
- 23:30is spending all this money on all these big names. They're not bringing in
- 23:33Lionel MESSI uh, you know, like Miami. So you have to do
- 23:38something to make yourself stand out. And that's what that's what Tanner and Curtin
- 23:42Um particularly have done here and so it's I can't stress how important is to
- 23:48keep those two around. It's good to see where the team is at right
- 23:51now. I mean at this point last week when they were sixth in the
- 23:52Eastern Conference and now now they're at third. The record is twelve four and
- 23:57seven at this point. Good to see moving up the ranks there in the
- 24:00East. Yeah, yeah, they're I don't know if they're gonna. I
- 24:04don't think they're in any danger of you know, getting that top spot in
- 24:07the use at this point. But you know, I mean, there'll be
- 24:11a solid team, there'll be a team that people don't want to see in
- 24:15the playoffs. And they're you know, they're hot at the right time.
- 24:18I mean earlier in the season. I remember we were talking about them earlier
- 24:22in the in the season. Everybody's like, Holy hell, what happened to
- 24:25this team? They were great last year and now they you know, they
- 24:29can't do anything right. And they had a lot of new pieces that they
- 24:30were integrating in and trying to, you know, get used to the system.
- 24:36And it looks like that has happened, and now the pieces are starting
- 24:37to click a little bit. Yeah, yep, it's good. Good for
- 24:41the city of Philadelphia. We've got another team here that you know, we're
- 24:45gonna be able to root for as they go through their second half of the
- 24:48season here. So let us know what you're thinking about the Union, let
- 24:51us know what you're thinking about the Phillies major League Baseball as well. We'd

- 25:29We will be back in just a bit with some Flyers talk, some Sixers
- 25:30talk, and some Eagles talk. Stick with us, we'll be right back.
- 25:36All right, we are back, Len. We of course need to
- 25:38get into the Philadelphia Flyers because this front office and organization up here, they
- 25:45appear keyword to have a little direction here in terms of what they want to
- 25:48do with this hockey club. Noah Kates getting signed to a two year extension.
- 25:56We also had Cam You're getting signed to a two year extension. Tony
- 26:00DeAngelo is on waivers at this point. You know that that deal with Carolina
- 26:04they're trying to get that trade deal done with DeAngelo and Carolina just did not
- 26:10work out for whatever reason, And there seems to be some really good direction
- 26:15here in terms of where the Flyers front office wants to take this team down
- 26:21the road. Because I'll tell you, I loved seeing the Noahkates two year
- 26:25extension because of what he meant for the team this year, a team that
- 26:30was on the downslide. But there was a lot that was asked of Noah
- 26:33Kates at times in terms of whether it was his place in the lineup,
- 26:38the minutes that he was expected to take. He took all of that in
- 26:41stride and came out to be one of the bright spots in a very difficult
- 26:47season, to say the least for the Flyers team in their organization as well.
- 26:52He had eight goals twenty five points in eighty two games played, and
- 26:56his acumen on the defensive side was a real ass for this team that was
- 27:02just really trying to figure out how to play a more sound defensive game overall
- 27:07from top to bottom. So I love the Noah Kates signing because at the
- 27:11end of the day, we don't know who we're gonna get. You know,
- 27:12He's gonna be sticking around a little bit longer. But I think we
- 27:17can feel that comfort that we know we have a productive young player that's going
- 27:19to be on the ice for this team. Yeah. I mean the there
- 27:25was some talk with both him and Cam York, and I think warranted was
- 27:30just like, oh man, I mean, two years is great and all,
- 27:33but I mean I wouldn't mind seeing them locked up for a little bit
- 27:36longer than that, just you know, because they're guys that are clearly part
- 27:41of the future here, Kates is. I mean, look, this whole
- 27:44offseason has been dictated by getting rid of guys that Tortorell doesn't want and keeping
- 27:49guys at Tortorella does want clearly No Kates, you know, I don't I
- 27:53don't want to label him as like it just like a try hard but I
- 27:56mean he does all the things coaches love so and any That's not to say
- 28:02he's not a talented player. He does have some talent. I don't think
- 28:06he's, you know, anything more than a really good fourth liner, and
- 28:08I think he could be a really good fourth line or on a contending team.
- 28:12Yeah, I do think he can be that. I want to make
- 28:15sure we don't get in the trap of like, oh, yeah, he's
- 28:18a second line center or something like that, or or winger or whatever.
- 28:22I don't want to overvalue him, but he's absolutely a piece that can help
- 28:26you win. So I'm glad he's here again. They could have signed him
- 28:32for longer, you know, as far as I'm concerned, because if he
- 28:34keeps doing what he's doing, then the Flyers have to pay out a little
- 28:38bit more in two years, and you know, what's the cap situation going
- 28:42to be like then? I assume it's going to go up, but you
- 28:45know where is the team at at that point. So yeah, I mean
- 28:49I'm good with it. I'm good with him, I'm good with York.
- 28:53We'll see what they do with Morgan Frost now. But yeah, I think
- 28:56they could have signed these guys for even longer. I think it's interesting too
- 29:00that you mentioned that, because I thought about that. I think Danny Brier
- 29:03maybe taking a cautious type of an approach to these these future contracts. And
- 29:11part of me, I completely get where you're coming from, but part of
- 29:15me is, like, you know what, I think Danny Brier might be
- 29:18responsible in terms of this particular contract, Like he doesn't want to do a
- 29:22Travis Sandheim thing, which which what Fletcher did, you know, which which
- 29:26is a it's not a great contract. It's just not a great punt it
- 29:30is. It's not it's terrible, you know. So I think he's exercising
- 29:33some caution, and I do like to see that, because it's like,
- 29:36okay, kid, you were here for a year, you played really well
- 29:41and beyond expectation, and you obviously have talent, and let's see in another
- 29:45couple of years where he's at. I think that cautious approach. I'm kind
- 29:48of liking it with regard to this rebuild here. Yeah, and I get
- 29:53that. I mean, Kate's is twenty four, York is twenty two.
- 29:56I mean, I'm you know, it's not like you're giving out an eight
- 30:00year deal to a guy that's like twenty six or whatever. Um, you
- 30:03know. So so there's you know, there's that you know where like at
- 30:07the back end, he's in his thirties. And I'm not saying signing these
- 30:11guys for you know, eight years, but I mean, like, I
- 30:14don't know, four years, you know, I think that, you know,
- 30:17there's no reason they couldn't have done that, and you have guys that
- 30:19are still in their mid you know, mid twenties by the time it's over.
- 30:23So yeah, I mean, I'm again, I mean, I'm cool
- 30:26with it. We'll see where they're at. Tony de'angelo on unconditional waivers for
- 30:32the purpose of a buy out during the final year of his contract. Man,
- 30:37what a what A what A what A not good deal? It was
- 30:40just to bring him here after being acquired from the Hurricanes initially when he's signed
- 30:45that two year, ten million dollar contract. It's just, Man, Chuck
- 30:49Fletcher really was terrible. You know. Like I lend toward the end of
- 30:53his tenure, I was thinking to myself, you know, and I was
- 30:56making It's like, I was making excuses for Chuck Fletcher, thinking, all
- 31:00right, maybe he just got unlucky with some of the things, you know,
- 31:02and maybe I can see where he was coming from. Man, Chuck
- 31:04Fletcher just totally sucked. And we know that, and I know him saying
- 31:08it now hindsight being twenty twenty, of course, everybody knew he sucked.
- 31:11But man, this was one of those moves where you look back and you're
- 31:15just like, what the hell was this guy thinking here? You know,
- 31:18And it's I mean, it was, it was. It was a move
- 31:21that like when when it was made, everybody was like, oh god,
- 31:26they gave up and how much for this guy? Yeah, because he was
- 31:30a guy that was in a literally perfect situation in Carolina before he came here.
- 31:34I mean he was he was protected by a really good defense and that
- 31:38freed him up to do the things that he is good at. And and
- 31:41you know, he is a good offensive defenseman, but he was a defensively
- 31:47responsible partner. He couldn't have been in a better situation to look good than
- 31:52he was in Carolina. Um and Chuck Fletcher didn't realize that and bought fool's
- 31:57gold. And then you've got to I now, who you know couldn't play
- 32:00on this team for Tortorella and a guy that is now I think the only
- 32:06player in NHL history to be bought out twice. Yeah, I mean,
- 32:13it's quite a thing, it really. I have to laugh because of course
- 32:17it's associated with the Flyers here, you know what I mean, of course
- 32:21it is, Oh my god, alright, so yeah, that is that's
- 32:27what you got there. So I don't know, I don't know where his
- 32:29career goes from here. I really don't it should It should go down a
- 32:34white porcelain thing that we all use on a daily basis. I think that's
- 32:37where Yeah, I think, I don't know. I mean, if you
- 32:43can't stick with one of the worst teams in hockey, then I don't know.
- 32:49Yeah, exactly exactly. All right, Lennon, why don't we get
- 32:52into some Philadelphia seventy six Ers talk here real quick before I let you go
- 32:55and before we get to what we were thrown down on the table, Because
- 33:00the Philadelphia seventy Sixers during this offseason have just been absolutely from a public relations
- 33:07standpoint, from a what are they doing? What do they want to do?
- 33:12Where do they want to go? Type of questions being asked by the
- 33:15fan base, by podcast by you know, sports talk radio, and it's
- 33:19just it's not the greatest offseason look. And I thought it was unbelievable this
- 33:23past week when the Sixers signed Philip Petrosev and I think you say his name
- 33:30Azulas tubelis two bigs so and it was hilarious. I think it was on
- 33:35Liberty Ballers. You know, we're friends with a lot of folks over there
- 33:38at Liberty Ballers, and they jump on our pot every now and again that
- 33:42I read a headline like the Sixers have enough bigs to run an all center
- 33:45lineup at this point with these two guys here, I look, I don't
- 33:51know what to think of these two signings. Probably not much is going to
- 33:53happen with them, but thank god, you know, b ball, Paul
- 33:59is going to be coming back, and it seems like the fan base put
- 34:01a lot of pressure on the front office and Darryl Moore to get that done.
- 34:05I thought he was heading out to Utah, but no way, He's
- 34:07coming back. A lot of bigs on this team here Land a lot of
- 34:10bigs. Well, I mean, I like Paul Reid heck of a lot
- 34:15more than I like these two guys. I like him a heck of a
- 34:16lot more than I like Montrez Harrold at this point in his career. I
- 34:20mean, patruseven to Bellis. I don't know if they're ticketed for Delaware.
- 34:25I mean, that's the only thing I can think of, is you're just
- 34:29you know, you're you're using them in the G League as depth. I
- 34:31don't know. Petrie had a nice summer league. He had a nice summer
- 34:35league, But then again, it's the summer league. You know, yeah,
- 34:37good for him, Yes, I mean, I just I can't see
- 34:43a place on the six Ers thread to these two guys unless they have horrendous
- 34:47injury luck in the preseason. I just I don't know where they fit.
- 34:52I I I don't understand it. But to me, it's depth. It's
- 34:58you know, Okay, here's some guys are a stash in Delaware and if
- 35:00we need him there there, I mean, that's all the only thing I
- 35:04can think of is James Harden becoming a villain at this point with the Sixers
- 35:08fan base. Do you think. I don't know. I just they're gonna
- 35:13be right. It looks like they're gonna be running this thing back or who
- 35:15knows. He could be traded in October, you know, but like I
- 35:20think, again, he has the leverage. Teams know that the Sixers are
- 35:24in a rough spot right here, and whether if it's going to be the
- 35:28Clippers who inevitably acquires James Harden, They're in no rush. They are in
- 35:32no rush at this point. They don't need to be in any rush based
- 35:36on their cap space, what they have. It's it's it's making the Sixers
- 35:40front office brass not looking all that great here. No, this is the
- 35:49it feels like the being in the beginnings of a disaster. I just I
- 35:52wish I could get excited for the Sixers this year, and I'm just not
- 35:57yeah, same at all. Yeah. Um you know, I was reading
- 36:01something the other day where like, you know, guy talked about how he
- 36:06deals with, you know, people that are like like CEOs and may you
- 36:08know a ton of money and just talked about how divorced they are from reality
- 36:14and and and the the real world situations that just regular people operate like they
- 36:19just no concept, no concept of how to do anything for themselves, just
- 36:22and just divorced from the rest of the world. And I feel like that
- 36:28is James Harden in terms of like, man, can't you see what the
- 36:34perception of you is around the league? Yeah, Like I mean I would.
- 36:37And look, yes he did. I get that he you know,
- 36:40signed for last last year and you know, you know, to make the
- 36:45team better, and he thought that maybe the Sixers would take care of him
- 36:47on the back end, you know of that. Um, I get why
- 36:52he opted in because it was the only way he was going to get that
- 36:54thirty five point six million Another team wasn't going to give it to him.
- 36:58But it just like you got to realize what your track record is in terms
- 37:02of the playoffs. You know, you've now you know, asked out of
- 37:06you're asking out of your third team in a couple of years. Like people
- 37:09you've you've never proven you can lead in the playoffs. You always evaporate in
- 37:15the playoffs. It's just like, what, what do you really And you're
- 37:17getting older every single year, You're getting older. Yeah, what do you
- 37:21think your value is? Right? How how do you not see the full
- 37:25picture that people you know aren't you know, willing to you know, look
- 37:30at you like you're twenty six or twenty seven year old James Harden. You're
- 37:34not. That's just a fact of life. And I don't think he understands
- 37:37that. I really don't. Yeah, And I wonder if Himbeid is also
- 37:42seeing that with him in any hopes that Joel Embiid had of what James Harden
- 37:47could bring to the team. I mean, we saw it down the stretch
- 37:51in terms of the postseason this year. We saw it last year as well
- 37:54in the postseason twenty twenty two. You know, Embiad says he wants to
- 37:59win a championship now in Philly or quote anywhere else. This past week he
- 38:04went to Twitter said he was trolling, blah blah blah, whatever, Lenn,
- 38:07it is safe to say at the moment that this team is largely in
- 38:12disarray and it's sad. Like you said, I'm not too excited for this
- 38:16coming season because I got a feeling they're gonna be running a lot of this
- 38:20back and we have seen where this team has gone and it's not getting out
- 38:27of the second round of the postseason, and it's the same crap year after
- 38:32year. Aside from the fact that you're gonna have one Joe l Embiid,
- 38:36who is the reigning MVP champion at the end of the day, I hate
- 38:40to say it, but who cares? Who cares? Because as a even
- 38:44for him, probably at this point of course, he probably loves it.
- 38:46He probably loves type of money that he's able to get from it. But
- 38:51at the end of the day, like he said, he wants to win
- 38:52a championship now. He wants to win in Philly or quote anywhere else too,
- 38:57So maybe this is set in the stage for him to be out of
- 38:59here by next year. Yeah, I mean one one last thing with Harden.
- 39:04I mean, he should open his eyes and be like, Okay,
- 39:08I need to come in just you know, Yes, this team I played
- 39:15for less money last year than I could have gotten. Um, they're not
- 39:19reciprocating, They're not looking to help me out, and I have a legitimate
- 39:23ripe. That's fine. I ought to go into the season just do what
- 39:28I need to do, kick as much as as possible and make myself more
- 39:32desirable there. That that should should be his thought going into this year.
- 39:38As far as embiide, I mean, yeah, you said, you know,
- 39:42okay, he won the MVP last year and then the postseason happened and
- 39:45completely disregarded that MVP. I mean, honestly, if that was me,
- 39:51I would be taking that MVP trophy and putting it in the back of a
- 39:53closet because it was rendered meaningless by this, honestly by the by the past
- 40:00postseason. Yeah, um, Yokis did what he had to do and showed
- 40:04that, you know, maybe he should have still been an MVP. I
- 40:07mean, and I get em beat had a great regular season, but what
- 40:10happened in the postseason happened. Um so the fact that he's on Twitter and
- 40:15he's like trolling people Like I would just be like, Okay, I need
- 40:20to I need to get my reputation back because it went up in smoke in
- 40:24the last couple of games of that Boston series. So I need to Like
- 40:30the fact that he's on Twitter and he's trolling and doing stuff like this.
- 40:34It it's not the best look for me because it's just like, Okay,
- 40:37we're still goofing around here. Yeah. Um, So I don't know,
- 40:42um that that part of it. And I'm not saying get rid of Mbat's
- 40:45He's still, you know, a top seven or eight player in the league.
- 40:51To me, I don't think there's any reasonable way you can argue against
- 40:55that. I don't care how much you hate him. Um, there's there's
- 40:59no way. He said. He absolutely is, you know, the the
- 41:02anchor for a contending team. He can be, but you know, he's
- 41:07just gotta take care of your business first. Then you can talk all you
- 41:12want. Yeah. Um, then you can be on Twitter all you want,
- 41:15but you gotta you know, you say you want to win, stop
- 41:20with all this other stuff, and you know, do what you gotta do.
- 41:23I mean, I know the sixers, you know, front officers have
- 41:27not put him in the best position. They have not properly built a team
- 41:30around him. You know, I always talk about how there could be a
- 41:34thirty for thirty for this organization for the past twenty years. You could do
- 41:37a separate thirty for thirty on all the failures and all the missed decisions.
- 41:42I mean it just you know, you could write a book on all the
- 41:45miss decisions that all the mistakes that this organization has made. So a lot
- 41:50of that is on the organization. But man, I would I'd be like,
- 41:53my rep took a huge hit in the playoffs and I need to restore
- 41:58my name, and I don't. I don't get the sense of that.
- 42:00If he's goofing ram on Twitter. It's a great way to end this segment,
- 42:04buddy, fantastic way to end this segment. I am gonna let you
- 42:07go because we got to get into some Eagles talk. Oh man, we
- 42:09got we got Eagles postgame podcasts right around the corner. You're looking forward to
- 42:14that, Okay, I Hey, look, do you have a Do you
- 42:22have a podcast studio in your new house, a dedicated podcast studio? I
- 42:27don't. Oh, okay, yeah, I don't. I'm trying to think
- 42:32of. We're I'll do it. I mean it'll probably depend on, you
- 42:36know, if she's in bed or whatever. I just don't want to be
- 42:38too loud, okay, all right, but yeah I could. I could
- 42:44probably be as loud as I want it right now because I'm downstairs and we've
- 42:46got a window unit. It's as loud as hell, right right, Um,
- 42:49so she can't probably can't hear shit right now. You may have,
- 42:52you may have to go to your car. I'll just count. Wouldn't be
- 42:57the first time I've I've done shows from trucks before. So yes, yes,
- 43:02you remember those fun days. Those days were fantastic. Man, we
- 43:06have been through the ringer on this show. Yeah, oh yeah, absolutely
- 43:10all right, buddy, I'll let you go. Folks, follow Len on
- 43:13Twitter at Len Hunsicker. Follow the show at Philadelphia PSD. If you're new
- 43:16to the podcast, And uh, are you Leon? Are you doing anything
- 43:20on the threads yet? Are you on threads? I don't even know what
- 43:23that is? Is that? Yes, it's it's okay. It's Zuckerberg's new
- 43:30thing to compete with Twitter and like and like Blue Sky and mastadon or whatever
- 43:36which is you just it's the easy. It was the easiest thing in the
- 43:38world to like set up. It's basically off your Instagram and you just basically
- 43:43are following people from your Instagram and folks follow you from Instagram. But it's
- 43:46more like a Twitter based type of sert like social media service, but it's
- 43:51like instagramish. It's it's interesting. Actually, it's been interesting being on it.
- 43:55Yeah, I mean, like I wanna I I would like to get
- 44:00off Twitter because I just know the whole elon thing. But I still find
- 44:06it useful in terms of you know, getting news on there, uh at
- 44:09sports news, you know. Um, I mean I don't I don't like
- 44:14to go I'd still go on it every day, but I actually find myself
- 44:17getting more and more depressed every time I go on Twitter. I honestly do.
- 44:22Like I'm like between all the political discourse and just just seeing that you
- 44:30know, everybody has has a thought and you don't really need to not everybody
- 44:34should have their thoughts known by by everybody, right, Let's just be kind
- 44:38and put it that way. Um. So yeah, it's just anytime I
- 44:43like, anytime I go on there, I'm on it for like five minutes.
- 44:45I'm like, I feel worse. Why why do I do this every
- 44:49day? So, like, I don't know, are these other platforms,
- 44:52whether it's blue Sky or Macedon or scripts, is it like is it better
- 44:58in that regard? I like what you threads. Threads has been like less
- 45:02political scripts. Yeah, scripts, scripts, It's like you're going to the
- 45:07doctors. Script, give me a script. I want to take script after
- 45:13I'm on Twitter. So that sometimes it's like it's it's it's not as political.
- 45:20And that's what I believe it or not. Zuckerberg and the folks at
- 45:23at Meta are trying to make it quote not as political and not with a
- 45:29lot of the social whether it's social justice type stuff, and with the political
- 45:35nonsense, you know. And I love how I say political nonsense. I'm
- 45:37a candidate for public office this year, right yeah, so um, it's
- 45:43not. And by the way, I post a stuff constant a lot,
- 45:45you know, the political stuff. So I love how I just said that.
- 45:47But it's they're trying to make make it less. I guess the algorithm
- 45:52to get less of that stuff to you. So it's actually a community of
- 45:54people talking. I don't know how long that's gonna last. I don't know.
- 45:59I can't see it lasting for very long. Yeah, I can't imagine
- 46:02it will I don't know. I also have I mean, I'm not the
- 46:06biggest Zuckerberg fan either. I just die when I just see his face.
- 46:12I just imagine someday they're gonna unscrew the face plate, the face plate,
- 46:16and there's gonna be a robot like he just he has dead eyes like he
- 46:22he creeps me out. He's a creepy looking human because of the haircut too.
- 46:27I think the haircut doesn't help him. Yeah, yeah, and now
- 46:32he's like doing MMA stuff and I don't know. It's just like, isn't
- 46:37being obscenely rich enough? When is it enough? You have to do everything?
- 46:44You're ruined the world with social media? Yeah, now you have no
- 46:49idea what to do. But yeah, I anytime I see him talk,
- 46:52I just I'm waiting for like sparks to start flying out of the back of
- 46:57his neck and like the the operating system to shut down him to slump over.
- 47:01He just seems like an android, Like when you when they turned off
- 47:06C three PO and Star Wars, He's just like, yeah, less,
- 47:09yes, I love it all right, buddy, I'll let you go.
- 47:13Folks, We are going to get into some Eagles talk when we get back.
- 47:16That's what we're throwing down on the table. Let's get to that break
- 47:20now, and then let's get to some Eagles talk as the season's right around
- 47:22the corner. Let's get to it. All right. We are back from
- 47:27the break, and we got a great guest coming on to talk about the
- 47:30Philadelphia Eagles. We're just a couple of weeks away from the start of training
- 47:34camp. That's what we're thrown down on the table and now on the tagle
- 47:40joining us to get into this Philadelphia Eagles team this off season and what we
- 47:45can expect during this coming twenty twenty three season. We have from the Bell
- 47:51and the Birdman podcast. I listen on Apple Podcasts. They are on Spotify
- 47:53other podcasting platforms as well, and they're also doing some other good stuff teaching
- 47:59podcast to some individuals out there, which we're gonna get to in a bit.
- 48:01We've got the one and only Vince Quinn. How are you doing,
- 48:04buddy? Oh hey, it's me. How did I get here? You
- 48:07can there are any other better guests around? You? Got stuck with me?
- 48:09I'm sorry? Oh no, buddy, And I love listening to you
- 48:14and our friend John Barchert on the Bell and the Birdman podcast. You guys
- 48:16do a great job, and I know that you are liking and enjoying teaching
- 48:22others about the world of podcasting too. You do SPX productions as well,
- 48:27and I love it because I think, yes, everybody quote has a podcast
- 48:31now. But there's an art form to this stuff, believe it or not,
- 48:35folks, there actually is, and you and John are doing a good
- 48:38job with that. Man. Well yeah, thanks, man. I mean,
- 48:40look, it's it is tough. And whence people get into his show,
- 48:44they're like, oh my god, I'm gonna do all this editing and
- 48:45I gotta figure out all the recording times and I gotta post it, I
- 48:47gotta come up with clips, and I got a tweet or whatever it is,
- 48:50and it's just like, oh my god, what am I doing?
- 48:52And like for so many business owners and just general content creators, it's overwhelming.
- 48:55Man. So like, our whole thing is all right, how can
- 48:58you streamline that, get a clear message out and just get the proper help
- 49:00that you need. People have such a hard time getting the proper help.
- 49:04And we know that because we've been through it. Ourselves so many times.
- 49:07So it's nice to, you know, be able to help people out.
- 49:09Vince. I'm gonna say this because I've said I've actually said it once on
- 49:13this podcast. I've tweeted it out a couple of times. Folks, if
- 49:15you're doing a podcast, can you please use a little bit of compression and
- 49:19a limitter? For God's sake, can you please use these two plugins and
- 49:23effects. I would absolutely love it for certain podcasts that I listen to.
- 49:29I love the content, but my gosh, sometimes from an audio perspective,
- 49:31it's like, if you just put some compression on this, it might be
- 49:36a little easier on the ears. Here. Well yeah, and it's funny
- 49:38because you can't still right now. I'm in my home office right so,
- 49:40like I need to get a carpet in here. I don't have one in
- 49:44here right now. So a lot of people, when you're talking to them
- 49:45on the show, Jeff, they s, yes, that's acceptable, right
- 49:54exactly. I don't understand it. Yeah, so I like I'm doing it.
- 49:59Yeah, So I wish I was better with the quality for today,
- 50:01but it is what it is, and you sound great, So yeah,
- 50:06just don't do it on air pods. Folks get anything better than AirPods.
- 50:08Exactly, exactly. I'm almost coughing here. Anyway, I'm excited about this
- 50:14Eagle season, Vince. I'm excited to have you on to talk about what
- 50:17we can expect from this team in the future. But I have to say
- 50:20right off the bat, I feel like it has been a quiet, quiet
- 50:23off season in general for the Philadelphia Eagles. And sure, you know,
- 50:27we went through free agency, we went through the draft, but I feel
- 50:30like things have just been really quiet in terms of like storylines. And yes,
- 50:34thankfully nobody on the team to date has gotten in any trouble or anything
- 50:38like that. Off the field. You know, there's always usually some sort
- 50:40of storyline involving somebody doing something you know that they shouldn't be doing. Do
- 50:45you feel like it's been quiet too, And if so, like, what
- 50:47what do you equate that too? Well, yeah, it's definitely quiet.
- 50:52Um it's I equated to winning. They're good, you know, Like that's
- 50:55that's because right, like there's there's two seasons. You get your off season
- 51:00at the regular season, and like the way that everybody handles this is if
- 51:02you are good, people love you during the regular season. In the postseason.
- 51:06If you suck, people are obsessed with you in the offseason because it's
- 51:08like, oh, how do they get better? How do they change this
- 51:10move? What is this guy? Is he gonna take a leap? All
- 51:13this kind of stuff, Like people are just so confident, right and everything
- 51:16across the board. I mean, if anything, and maybe this starts up
- 51:19now in the next couple of weeks, but like thinking about this kind of
- 51:22stuff that people are gonna really drill into, I think mostly it's the rookies
- 51:25and just the young guys in general. It's like all these Georgia kids,
- 51:29right, like Nolan Smith, Jalen Carter. Jalen Carter just got sued,
- 51:31Jordan Davis was a little bit slower than people would have liked last year.
- 51:35They want to see more out of him. So what does he do?
- 51:37Nakobe Dean probably your starting linebacker? What does he look like? So like
- 51:40there's so many guys like that, is Stean gonna win the starting guard job?
- 51:45Like you just you pile all those things up and like that's the stuff.
- 51:49But even then, people like if you ask everybody in a vacuum,
- 51:51like do you think Nolan Smith's gonna be good? Yes? Carter yes,
- 51:53Davis, yes, Dean yes, like so exactly. Yeah, I mean
- 52:00some level, it's a relief, like but then you also realized, like,
- 52:01oh, I need more hobbies, not enough, because like watching the
- 52:07Phillies all right there. You know they're winning games here. It's fun to
- 52:09watch them, but you know, we need football. We definitely need it.
- 52:14And of course, when you're talking about certain storylines that we're going to
- 52:16be following within these next few weeks, like you said, the younger guys,
- 52:20and we're certainly going to get into a couple of those guys in just
- 52:22a little bit, just to tease it out there for some folks, one
- 52:24particular offensive lineman as well. But I wanted to reflect on a recent article
- 52:30that was in The Athletic with events Don Pompeii. He wrote a great article
- 52:36recently about the long process that made the Eagles front office believe that Jalen Hurts
- 52:40was going to be their guy, and how they knew that he was a
- 52:45winner, and the process that it took for the Eagles front office to really
- 52:47realize that. I mean a detailed how the coaching staff, scouts in the
- 52:51front office saw the shift in what in what the quarterback position was actually becoming
- 52:57and how it was continuing to volve evolve the NFL even up until these past
- 53:01few years. Here not just pocket passing, but a quarterback really being able
- 53:06to use their arms and legs and their mind together in an overall picture.
- 53:10So long story short, here, should we be looking at Jalen Hurts as
- 53:16the next coming in terms of the quarterback position, perhaps like a Peyton Manning
- 53:22or a Drew Breese kind of helping to revolutionize the position. What are your
- 53:25thoughts here? Yeah, so I've done this on Bell a little bit.
- 53:29I'm going to compare to do a guy that I absolutely hate, and I
- 53:30mean it in the best way. Yeah he's Tom Brady. Yep, he's
- 53:36Tom Brady. I just say that. Yep. Yeah, I don't know
- 53:38how else to say it. He's Tom Brady. I mean, the guy
- 53:42is pinpoint accurate. He's a relentless work ethic. Everybody loves this guy.
- 53:45He makes smart decisions, and he's young, he's inexperienced. Still like thinking
- 53:50about how much better he's going to get. I think all that stuff once
- 53:52he gets commanded. The offense and his ability to take games over. I
- 53:55mean, he doesn't so much anyway, clutch in the fourth quarter, game
- 53:59winning, drives, all that kind of stuff. The moment's never too big
- 54:01for him. Like he does everything you could absolutely ask for. And so
- 54:07yeah, I mean, he's absolutely going to be one of those guys in
- 54:08my book. And I was a doubter because at first, like he comes
- 54:12in, can't throw in the middle of the field. He's fun, but
- 54:14he's good, Like you don't take that kind of progress and look that sharp
- 54:17and be that precise and not be a good player. Absolutely absolutely, And
- 54:22look I was one of those doubters as well, and he certainly proved to
- 54:24us last year. But it just goes to show from a front office perspective,
- 54:29how minds can change and how the evolutionary process of how they view a
- 54:35player can change. And I think that should be said for the fan base
- 54:37too. You know, we all saw that and we all kind of went
- 54:40through it together, Carson Wentz getting that huge contract and just you know,
- 54:45a few months down the road, they're draft in a quarterback in the second
- 54:49round and Jalen hurts and then we know the story. But it's amazing how
- 54:52the quarterback position from a front office standpoint has kind of revolutionized itself at least
- 54:58in Philadelphia over these past few years. Well, yeah, and Philly's got
- 55:00it more than most people, right, I mean they were Donovan McNabb in
- 55:04the early two thousands and then Liz Michael Vick. So like they've they've totally
- 55:07gotten it, and they've invested in that multiple times. Wentz was mobile,
- 55:09you know, like all that stuff. So so they've understood that they've been
- 55:13ahead of the trend and that's been part of the value for them. But
- 55:15like the silly thing is that, you know, it was a derogatory thing,
- 55:17especially for McNabb. People would kill him for it as a running quarterback.
- 55:22But like what's the harm? You know, it's just, yeah,
- 55:25offenses have caught up. They understand the RPO and how that holds a defense
- 55:29and how they can get you better gains in the running game by handing the
- 55:30ball off because your quarterback can runs. So like coaches failed those guys for
- 55:36years, the league finally caught up to it, which is a huge relief
- 55:38and if anything, like it just makes the league better because so many quarterbacks
- 55:43have opportunity to be successful, you know what I mean at like that highest
- 55:46level, because really it's like, how many elite quarterbacks can you get in
- 55:50the league? And right now you look at so many guys that are insanely
- 55:52talented. You look at the top ten, I mean, there's there's a
- 55:53ton of like really seriously talented guys. And if you're talking about top ten
- 55:59quarterbacks, you're not even talking about a guy most likely like Justin Fields,
- 56:01who's insanely talented. It was on a god awful team last year exactly.
- 56:06So yeah, man, So it's just like you pile all that stuff up
- 56:08and I look around, it's like, yeah, I thank god, people
- 56:10finally understand this now, and the Eagles have always understood this, and now
- 56:15it's paying off again. Absolutely. All right, Well, let's stick to
- 56:16the offense here in terms of talent and what we may see this coming seasons,
- 56:22specific and specifically with regard to training camp two, because I do wonder
- 56:25what's going to happen with that right guard situation. Now that Isaac Samalu,
- 56:30who is solid for so many years, he's gonna be playing on the offensive
- 56:34line for the Pittsburgh Steelers. I don't think we can say with certainty events
- 56:38that Cam Jurgens is the guy at this point can we, because I mean,
- 56:44he hasn't done anything yet in this NFL league. Yes, we know
- 56:47there's talent there, of course, from what we saw from him in college.
- 56:52But I will say there's like a small part of me that's hesitant to
- 56:55put a guy on the most dominant offensive line in football who hasn't seen any
- 57:00action. I don't know. It's not that I'm a Cam Jurgens hater here,
- 57:04folks, and that's not what it is. It's just could he be
- 57:07a weak link in this offensive line that is so dominant. I don't know.
- 57:10What are your thoughts here? Do you have kind of have the same
- 57:13concerns? Man? You hate Cam Jurgens? Wow? Oh yeah, so
- 57:19I love. My thing is I'd rather have Steen win the job outright.
- 57:22Yeah. I just think it's cleaner and it makes more sense. Like that.
- 57:25That guy he's transitioning from tackle to guard. He's he's pretty raw as
- 57:30all of this goes. Anyway, He's only been playing football really for like
- 57:32five years, and he did all of it in the SEC, so he's
- 57:35got a pretty good foundation. It's basically like a lesser great version of my
- 57:39Latta for a couple of reasons. So thinking about a guy like that that's
- 57:44with them. I feel like they want him to play guard. That was
- 57:46the ideal along. You don't draft a guy like that in the third if
- 57:49you don't think he can play early. So I think that all that all
- 57:52adds up. And then the idea for Jurgens still is, Hey, he
- 57:54could be a backup. He could cross train there. You keep him healthy.
- 57:58Kelsey is thirty five, thirty six. You're lucky that he hasn't had
- 58:00serious injuries that he can't play through, but you never know, and it's
- 58:05just easier to keep him focused on the center position to be a super backup.
- 58:07And if it's close enough, you should just go with the guy that
- 58:09you want to be the guard long term. Absolutely, all right, Well,
- 58:13let's move to the running back position here, Vince, because I wanted
- 58:16to really get your thoughts just on how this rushing attack this season is going
- 58:22to manifest itself and play out and what we might expect from just all the
- 58:25talent that's on this team this season, because last year, look Miles Sanders,
- 58:29Kenneth Gainwell, and Boston Scott they combined for one thousand, seven hundred
- 58:32and twenty six rushing yards last season and with an almost new running back room
- 58:37here. I mean, do you think that DeAndre Swift, Rashad Penny,
- 58:40and Kenneth Gainwell are going to surpass that total or might we see something a
- 58:45little bit different from the running game this coming season. Yeah, It's it's
- 58:49one of those tough things because you are just talking about the running back numbers,
- 58:52and part of that question is how much is Jalen Hurt's going to run?
- 58:54Yeah, and how does that impact those numbers if he runs a little
- 58:59bit less and they start the transition to the passing game more, I'm gonna
- 59:01say they don't hit that mark, Okay. And you know part of it
- 59:05too is I just think there's the injury problem is real with those guys,
- 59:08and I do worry about that. So, like, I honestly I don't
- 59:12expect anything from Penny if it turns out that he plays a couple of games
- 59:15and he's great, awesome, Like, but I go into zero expectations.
- 59:17They basically paid them like they have zero expectations. So it is what it
- 59:22is there. But yeah, I mean, the nice thing is they are
- 59:22talented guys and there is a lot of them and you can just trust somebody
- 59:27else to step in, whether it's Kenny or Scott or whatever it might be,
- 59:30and you go and figure it out. I don't even know what the
- 59:32over under is on Rashad Penny for games. I'm thinking eight over under.
- 59:38It's got to be under, right, yeah, I honestly, if there
- 59:42is one that's pretty it's a pretty grim over under. I wonder if Vegas
- 59:47does that, but if they do, yeah, it's probably under eight again,
- 59:52folks. Vince Quinn from The Bell and the Birdman podcast also SPX Productions.
- 59:57Check out everything they are doing, and you can follow Vince on Twitter
- 1:00:00at It's Vince Quinn. And let's move along here because I am really concerned
- 1:00:06about the middle of the defense. Actually, I know we're feeling good about
- 1:00:08this team, as we were talking about earlier, not too many storylines during
- 1:00:12the course of the off season here, Vince, but I am concerned about
- 1:00:15the middle of the defensive side of the ball. I just the linebackers.
- 1:00:21We have no idea. We just have no idea what this middle of the
- 1:00:22field is going to look like. Talking about Nakobe Dean and how he is
- 1:00:25a talent that we can't wait to see, but how is he going to
- 1:00:30stack up like his first year, likely starting in the NFL. Other linebackers
- 1:00:35have come in during the course of free agency. We don't know what.
- 1:00:37We don't know what's gonna happen. I mean, what is your concern when
- 1:00:39it comes to the linebacker corps, if any at all? Oh yeah,
- 1:00:43there, there isn't any idea. And it's not even because I'm worried about
- 1:00:45like the style of play. I just fundamentally don't care, Like I like.
- 1:00:50Linebackers to me are just like they're just so such a small part of
- 1:00:52the game. And if they're good, great, unless it's like, I
- 1:00:55don't know, like Casey Matthews out there, Remember the beautiful case Matthews.
- 1:01:00Yes, what a time to be alive. Google it, kids. He
- 1:01:02might be like his brother Clay. They have the same last name, folks.
- 1:01:07Yeah, well he was pushed into the dirt a lot like play,
- 1:01:10so yeah, I mean he had that going for him. But yeah,
- 1:01:14like, dude, unless it's like an absolute disaster, all you want is
- 1:01:17a guy that's forgettable. If it turns out that Nakobe Dean is forgettable,
- 1:01:21you got him in the third People thought he was a first round talent it's
- 1:01:23still not it's it's not a mistake, you know what I mean, Like,
- 1:01:28I'm still the right pick. So I totally don't care. I'm happy
- 1:01:31to be surprised with whatever comes out of it, and and we'll just see.
- 1:01:35It seemed it seemed bizarre that it seemed that this front office really wanted
- 1:01:39to increase talent at the linebacker position last season, and you know, it
- 1:01:45was like, oh my gosh, we we don't. We don't. We
- 1:01:49don't have whoever single Singleton Singleton? Was it Singleton? I got him forgetting
- 1:01:53him Alex Singleton, Yeah, exactly. He's playing for the Broncos. It's
- 1:01:58like, oh, wow, we don't have him more. Okay, great.
- 1:02:00You know, we actually had some talent at the linebacker position after he
- 1:02:04had left, and it's like, okay, now that's gone. I guess
- 1:02:07it's not a priority. I guess we just have to live with the fact
- 1:02:09that it's not a priority. Right. Well, something has to not be
- 1:02:14too, you know. So that's that's always the thing. It's like,
- 1:02:15okay, well, what did they prioritize. They prioritize defensive tackle and the
- 1:02:21edge with the outside linebackers corner. They tried to keep CJ he decided to
- 1:02:24leave. Now he calls Eagles fans obnoxious. Yeah. So yeah, like
- 1:02:29they've tried in all those places and they they priority like they just don't value
- 1:02:32linebackers, which was I always like when people wanted to Kobe Dean in the
- 1:02:37first I didn't understand it at all. I was like, dude, do
- 1:02:38you know what this team is? You know what they do? Like,
- 1:02:40what do you what do you want this guy for? Uh So, I
- 1:02:44never want to spend money on linebackers like that, and it just it drives
- 1:02:46me crazy. So I honestly, if you were going to not value a
- 1:02:50position, I think they've properly not valued the right position. Yeah. All
- 1:02:53right, Well to close us out here, Vents, let's look at this
- 1:02:58NFC East and I think it's fair to say that the Eagles are still the
- 1:03:00favorites to win it. And yes, I know we're here in basically mid
- 1:03:05July talking about these teams that haven't even gotten a training camp at this point
- 1:03:09yet, but you know, barring any significant injuries, as Philadelphia Eagles team
- 1:03:14looking like they're probably going to take it, and I think they might be
- 1:03:16the first NFC team to win back to back division titles since I believe it
- 1:03:21was two thousand and four. So I wonder, is there a surprise team
- 1:03:24in the division that you might be a little bit concerned about as this twenty
- 1:03:30twenty three season is just around the corner. Well, yeah, Dak said
- 1:03:32he's not throwing more than ten picks, so clearly that's gonna happen. Yeah,
- 1:03:36yeah, Yeah, let's just hand it to Dallas now. I'm just
- 1:03:38going to crown them division champions. Congratulations the Dallas. You did it,
- 1:03:43Dack only through eighteen picks, So yeah, I just like it's silly,
- 1:03:50man. You can't. You can't trust any of these groups. I mean,
- 1:03:52the only thing if you were going to bet on a team like the
- 1:03:54Giants and all that sae Quon stuff could get really ugly. I think he
- 1:03:58is going to hold out, and really I think all of those guys are
- 1:04:00going to hold out. I think we're looking at like a union busting kind
- 1:04:03of thing, where you know, the league is trying to shut down all
- 1:04:06the revenues, they're trying to do it collectively. Yeah, and as a
- 1:04:10result, these guys are gonna have to revolt. So I expect like a
- 1:04:13mass group of guys all prominent players that don't show. So that's gonna be
- 1:04:16a problem for the Giants. And he's really one of the best players.
- 1:04:18And you know, good luck with Daniel Jones, So that's part of it.
- 1:04:23Like, I think Washington has the best chance just because they're not going
- 1:04:26to be sad, you know, Like Daniel Snyder makes you fundamentally sad all
- 1:04:30the time. It's what he does. So now that he's gonna be gone,
- 1:04:33they won't. I'm not gonna say they're gonna be happy, right,
- 1:04:35but they're not going to be sad. Okay's gonna be sad, and that's
- 1:04:39gonna help. So yeah, I'm worried about Washington more than anyone. I
- 1:04:43actually would. I was gonna say the same team, to be honest with
- 1:04:45you. And I think a lot of that is because of Eric b Enemy
- 1:04:46too, because I think he's been you know, it's like, I can't
- 1:04:49believe this guy hasn't gotten a head coaching position yet. And look, we
- 1:04:53kind of know that certain people get head coaching positions after winning Super Bowls.
- 1:04:57Perhaps that may not necessary deserved head coaching positions at least, you know,
- 1:05:02as far as Eagles fans here, I don't know. I don't know.
- 1:05:05There's certain Jonathan Gann and I'm not sure if he necessarily should have been given
- 1:05:10a head coaching position. However, Eric B. Enemy is a talented coach
- 1:05:14in this league, and I think he is going to have the ability to
- 1:05:15bring out some talent with the on the field talent with Washington Commanders. So
- 1:05:20I think Eric B. Enemy is kind of that uh you know, kind
- 1:05:25of kind of that under the radar coach in the NFC East. Yeah,
- 1:05:29and the balance is good, right. Ron rivera defensive guy, He's terrible
- 1:05:31at offense. He has no business over there a live his offenses aren't bad.
- 1:05:34Uh So it like to get a guy like the Enemy who can essentially
- 1:05:38be the head coach over there. It's it's a really good fit. They
- 1:05:42did a smart thing at It's Vince Quinn on the Twitter dot com Bell and
- 1:05:45the Birdman Podcast. Vince Man, it was great having you on. Thank

- 1:06:23and I were just talking about with that right guard position. What's gonna happen
- 1:06:27with the linebacker position? How are the new Like what's gonna happen with a
