- 1:08Speaker 1: This is Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Fueled by Duncan. All right, welcome in the Patriots on filter.
- 1:17Speaker 3: That's right.
- 1:17Speaker 6: It's Thursday here at Jillette Stadium and we will be
- 1:20Speaker 6: talking some Patriots here for the next couple hours.
- 1:22Speaker 3: That's right.
- 1:23Speaker 6: It's Deuce back on the hosting chair. Fred's got some
- 1:26Speaker 6: boss man responsibilities today.
- 1:28Speaker 3: I'm here with.
- 1:29Speaker 6: Paul Perullo, Evan Lazarre and we got some stuff going
- 1:32Speaker 6: on today. We're obviously waiting for the schedule to come out,
- 1:35Speaker 6: and they was an announcement this morning. Tom Brady is
- 1:38Speaker 6: going to be coming back for the Patriots home opener
- 1:41Speaker 6: this year, announced by Robert Craft this morning on NFL Network.
- 1:44Speaker 6: And I just got to say right off the top,
- 1:46Speaker 6: for all the people who are writing in saying is
- 1:48Speaker 6: that it is that all they're doing. Watched the video
- 1:51Speaker 6: and he said, this is just the start of many
- 1:53Speaker 6: ways to honor Tom. But this seems like a simple
- 1:54Speaker 6: way just to get him back in the building and
- 1:57Speaker 6: you know, kind of bring them back into the fold
- 1:59Speaker 6: a little bit.
- 1:59Speaker 3: But I don't think this is the end of it.
- 2:00Speaker 6: So a lot of people reaching out on Twitter and
- 2:02Speaker 6: emails are like, is that it They're just going to
- 2:04Speaker 6: have like.
- 2:04Speaker 3: A you know, have them at the game. No, no, No,
- 2:07Speaker 3: it's the beauty and then the dowb like, you know,
- 2:10Speaker 3: the downfall of Twitter because people are you know, the
- 2:13Speaker 3: beauty is you get some information, right, you know, Robert
- 2:16Speaker 3: Kraft said Tom Brady's going to be honored, But then
- 2:19Speaker 3: people didn't actually see what was said, and I think
- 2:24Speaker 3: they some jumped to conclusions, including my buddy Chris with
- 2:28Speaker 3: a t I a n who evidently couldn't figure out
- 2:31Speaker 3: that Robert specifically said. And I think I wrote in
- 2:34Speaker 3: my original tweet, it's the first of many chances to
- 2:38Speaker 3: honor Tom Brady, So this is not going to be
- 2:40Speaker 3: the only time, promise.
- 2:42Speaker 5: I don't know about you, guys, but my phone is
- 2:45Speaker 5: already blowing up with people asking me if I can
- 2:47Speaker 5: get them tickets to that game. I've already had three
- 2:50Speaker 5: people reach out to me about tickets and we don't
- 2:54Speaker 5: really anyways, that don't don't don't add us about tickets.
- 2:59Speaker 5: All right, Sorry, I love you all, but please please
- 3:01Speaker 5: don't know just.
- 3:02Speaker 3: That Paul, he's the one who gets the thing. Yeah,
- 3:03Speaker 3: no one asks No, one asked. No, that'll be a
- 3:06Speaker 3: tough ticket to had a requestions Taylor Swift.
- 3:08Speaker 7: No.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Yeah, a lot of people in the in the thirty
- 3:11Speaker 3: eight requests that I got for that next weekend. Unfortunately,
- 3:13Speaker 3: I had a lot, a lot of let a lot
- 3:15Speaker 3: of people down on that one, but not everybody. No,
- 3:17Speaker 3: I got some people, you hook some the important people up.
- 3:19Speaker 3: I did well.
- 3:20Speaker 6: I basically did it in order of people asking me, Yeah,
- 3:23Speaker 6: that'll be a big weekend. I I think I think
- 3:26Speaker 6: I mentioned my uh my son Campbell's about that his
- 3:28Speaker 6: eleventh birthday next week. Just wanted a limo to a
- 3:30Speaker 6: dance next Friday. Calling around. There's no limos available because
- 3:34Speaker 6: this Taylor Swift Night. Everything has been completely cleared out
- 3:36Speaker 6: for his so he will not be taking a limo
- 3:38Speaker 6: to his fifth grade dance.
- 3:39Speaker 3: It'll probably be my wife driving him and my pathfinders.
- 3:41Speaker 3: So sorry, buddy, that's kind of like a limo. Just
- 3:44Speaker 3: so you know, you'll be coming up on his therapy
- 3:47Speaker 3: session in about fifteen years, right. I wanted give me
- 3:50Speaker 3: amo for my fifth grade dance for my eleventh birthday,
- 3:54Speaker 3: not not eleventh birthday. Yeah, I was going with the
- 3:57Speaker 3: fifth grade dance. It was just eleventh birthday, I said
- 4:00Speaker 3: in front of Lane, like, I've only been in a
- 4:01Speaker 3: limo twice in my life. One was my junior prom
- 4:03Speaker 3: and the other was my wedding. And she's like, that
- 4:04Speaker 3: wasn't a limo. We just got a car. I was like,
- 4:06Speaker 3: all right, then, I've only been in a limo once
- 4:07Speaker 3: in my whole life, my junior prom. But uh, what happened?
- 4:10Speaker 8: Like you drive around?
- 4:11Speaker 3: I'm sure like in you're like town, you ever drive
- 4:13Speaker 3: around and there's like a column. No, no, you're just
- 4:16Speaker 3: driving around. There's a house and there's just kind of
- 4:17Speaker 3: a limo on the side, often parked there, and you wonder,
- 4:21Speaker 3: does this guy have a side business? Is just a
- 4:23Speaker 3: lot driver? I see it all the time, random limit.
- 4:25Speaker 3: I don't live in the posh suburbs like you do,
- 4:28Speaker 3: so these other people who are driving that I don't
- 4:30Speaker 3: have people just like pulled over to the side.
- 4:32Speaker 6: This is the guy who like bought like an eighties limo,
- 4:34Speaker 6: fixed it up and now it's his side gig.
- 4:36Speaker 3: And occasionally he's like, hey, you need someone for a
- 4:38Speaker 3: sixth grade dance? I got upstc Yeah, your gut. You
- 4:42Speaker 3: know he's got the little hairy Stewart Masterson is ready
- 4:44Speaker 3: to go. And they did dances for fifth grade. We
- 4:47Speaker 3: didn't do that.
- 4:47Speaker 6: No, no, neither did I, but I gave him credit
- 4:49Speaker 6: for wanting to do it, you know, in a limo.
- 4:52Speaker 6: I thought that would be would be kind of fun.
- 4:53Speaker 6: But I don't know, I was kind of thing.
- 4:55Speaker 5: I know a guy with the black SUV that he
- 4:57Speaker 5: does this for a living, you know, he drives people
- 5:00Speaker 5: the airport mostly and stuff like that.
- 5:01Speaker 3: But maybe I can hook you up. But if he
- 5:03Speaker 3: wants to have a bunch of fifth grade boys that
- 5:05Speaker 3: they didn't want to go with the girls, they wanted
- 5:06Speaker 3: to go all boys, We've completely gotten off the rails here.
- 5:09Speaker 3: We're five minutes into the show.
- 5:10Speaker 6: I apologize for that, but but obviously the big news
- 5:13Speaker 6: of the day as we tack back.
- 5:14Speaker 9: To the.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Celebrate. I am not one that I know a lot
- 5:19Speaker 3: of other people agnostic when it comes to the schedule.
- 5:21Speaker 3: Just tell us where it is. I know there's been
- 5:24Speaker 3: some reports out there. Everything will be coming out at
- 5:26Speaker 3: at eight o'clock tonight, along with all the schedule release
- 5:29Speaker 3: videos that that our whole team put a ton of
- 5:31Speaker 3: work into. So we're excited to I'm excited to see
- 5:33Speaker 3: that out there. Yeah you haven't seen it yet.
- 5:35Speaker 5: I haven't seen it, so I'm excited to see that
- 5:37Speaker 5: and I know that it's a lot of work has
- 5:41Speaker 5: been put into that by a lot of people in
- 5:42Speaker 5: our department, and it should be cool. And I think
- 5:46Speaker 5: in general I used to be into the schedule. Now
- 5:48Speaker 5: I'm not going to lie. It's mostly just about okay,
- 5:51Speaker 5: how can I structure the next six months of my life?
- 5:55Speaker 5: More than anything, And I understand that that is nobody cares.
- 5:59Speaker 5: So I do find it interesting how much juice this gets.
- 6:04Speaker 5: And I do think it just is because people are
- 6:06Speaker 5: starving for any sort of football in the middle of
- 6:08Speaker 5: the summer. But in general, for people like us, this
- 6:13Speaker 5: dictates our schedules.
- 6:14Speaker 3: You know, it's like getting your work schedule right, here's
- 6:16Speaker 3: your assignments right.
- 6:17Speaker 5: Yeah, but for fans, I do find it interesting. But
- 6:20Speaker 5: with Brady coming back, I had one thing to say
- 6:22Speaker 5: about that. I think for all, I don't want to
- 6:25Speaker 5: speak for everybody, but for me personally, I felt like
- 6:28Speaker 5: the way that he left there was such little closure in,
- 6:32Speaker 5: such little appreciation for what he brought to this city, organization, everything.
- 6:39Speaker 5: So it's nice to finally get to to kind of
- 6:43Speaker 5: close the book a little bit and say thanks and say,
- 6:47Speaker 5: you know, give him the deserving send off. I just
- 6:50Speaker 5: I hate to this day that Tom Brady's last moments
- 6:55Speaker 5: as a Patriot are walking off the field losing to
- 6:59Speaker 5: the Titans in the playoffs at home and what was
- 7:02Speaker 5: maybe one of the most just underwhelming playoff performances of
- 7:07Speaker 5: the whole era.
- 7:10Speaker 3: It just it was a rock fight. It was an
- 7:12Speaker 3: ugly game.
- 7:13Speaker 5: They didn't play well, obviously, and just to go it
- 7:16Speaker 5: felt like you went out limping as a Patriot. And
- 7:18Speaker 5: and that's that's stung.
- 7:20Speaker 6: Logan Ryan picked six, Like, yeah, I think we were
- 7:22Speaker 6: riding down the elevator maybe like when that happened, I
- 7:25Speaker 6: don't remember.
- 7:25Speaker 3: Did we see that live or was that was that
- 7:27Speaker 3: when we saw it? We saw it, Yeah, and then
- 7:32Speaker 3: we decided, okay, that's our cute to break up the
- 7:36Speaker 3: post starting to show.
- 7:38Speaker 5: Uh yeah, I agree with you though, And you know what,
- 7:40Speaker 5: I think, COVID hit and then he and then he
- 7:43Speaker 5: announces that he's leaving on social media and it's very disconnected.
- 7:46Speaker 5: Everybody's very disconnected at that time with COVID anyways. So
- 7:50Speaker 5: there just was never a moment or a period of
- 7:53Speaker 5: time where fans could say thank you, fans could honor him,
- 7:56Speaker 5: and uh, the other thing is just it's great that
- 8:00Speaker 5: he does want to be a part of the Patriot
- 8:04Speaker 5: organization again, and he does want to be associated with
- 8:07Speaker 5: the Patriots and and really put himself back into that
- 8:11Speaker 5: mindset of of being a lifelong Patriot. So I hated
- 8:15Speaker 5: how it ended. I'm glad this will hopefully rewrite it
- 8:18Speaker 5: a little bit.
- 8:19Speaker 6: I kind of found myself thinking a little bit on
- 8:21Speaker 6: the Tampa Bay game when he came back here this
- 8:24Speaker 6: morning and just you know, now, as it's a couple of.
- 8:26Speaker 3: Years in the rearview mirror, just of a what a
- 8:28Speaker 3: cool experience that was, like that we actually got to
- 8:31Speaker 3: see that, like, you know, just once, but still like
- 8:33Speaker 3: you know, at the time, it was so you're so
- 8:35Speaker 3: wrapped up in.
- 8:36Speaker 6: Everything going on with you know, the team and Bill
- 8:39Speaker 6: and man Tom and O Tom, We're going to go
- 8:40Speaker 6: back there, you know, all the other kind of noise
- 8:42Speaker 6: that went with it. But now it's like in retrospect,
- 8:44Speaker 6: it was just like, what a cool thing that that
- 8:46Speaker 6: actually happened, that he got to come back here and
- 8:47Speaker 6: play that. It was you know, a pretty entertaining game,
- 8:50Speaker 6: and you know, just to I don't know, I don't
- 8:52Speaker 6: know if it would be of course, his career is
- 8:54Speaker 6: what it is, and nothing could could add more to that.
- 8:56Speaker 6: But just what a cool thing that he actually got
- 8:58Speaker 6: to come here and play a game, you know, and compete.
- 9:01Speaker 6: I think that's that's kind of a fun thing now
- 9:02Speaker 6: that's that's happened, But plenty of people weighing in on
- 9:05Speaker 6: that and the schedule release and everything. We also heard
- 9:09Speaker 6: from a couple guys today, Evan and I went down
- 9:11Speaker 6: to her from Devon Godshaw, who talked a little bit about,
- 9:15Speaker 6: you know, getting everybody back basically on the defensive side
- 9:18Speaker 6: of the ball except for Devin. And then we got
- 9:19Speaker 6: to hear from James Robinson for the first time, so
- 9:22Speaker 6: he talked a little bit after signing here coming off
- 9:25Speaker 6: a kind of a weird year last year, going from
- 9:27Speaker 6: the Jags to the Jets, coming off a torn achilles.
- 9:30Speaker 6: Spoke a little bit about that as well. So, I mean,
- 9:32Speaker 6: he's a little bit of a wild card this year.
- 9:34Speaker 6: I'm not sure exactly, you know, how you look at him,
- 9:37Speaker 6: if he's coming in to replace Damien Harris, or if
- 9:40Speaker 6: he's just kind of all right, compete against these two
- 9:42Speaker 6: rookies from last year. See if those guys have made
- 9:44Speaker 6: any strides and you kind of have a veteran there
- 9:46Speaker 6: to at least provide some insurance. But we've been talking
- 9:49Speaker 6: a little bit aout the running back position. There's some
- 9:50Speaker 6: interesting stuff, Yeah, there is.
- 9:52Speaker 5: I think people always are interested in running backs for
- 9:55Speaker 5: whatever reason. In Time Montgomery, I think, is another name
- 9:57Speaker 5: that is kind of this mythical creature that we all
- 10:01Speaker 5: saw at training campus. If you weren't out at training camp,
- 10:03Speaker 5: he didn't really get to see a ton of time
- 10:05Speaker 5: Montgomery and live action. And there was some good things
- 10:08Speaker 5: that he did last year, especially catching passes out of
- 10:11Speaker 5: the backfield. It felt like he was trending towards the
- 10:14Speaker 5: third down back role being his until he got injured
- 10:18Speaker 5: towards the end of preseason and then obviously in Week
- 10:20Speaker 5: one against Miami. But with James Robinson, I think what's
- 10:23Speaker 5: interesting is that his contract structure basically guarantees him nothing.
- 10:27Speaker 5: He's not guaranteed a roster spot, he's not guaranteed a
- 10:31Speaker 5: role of any kind. So he's going to earn it
- 10:33Speaker 5: here with the Patriots. And as much as it's not
- 10:36Speaker 5: to pick on James Robinson, but you would like to
- 10:38Speaker 5: hope that Pierre Stronger, Kevin Harris kind of beats him
- 10:42Speaker 5: out for opportunities. I think that he's sort of a
- 10:45Speaker 5: backup plan to those two guys, especially Peer Strong, Like
- 10:48Speaker 5: you really hope that this year is the year that
- 10:50Speaker 5: Pierre Strong. Maybe he had that Damien Harris rookie red
- 10:53Speaker 5: shirt style season and then he comes on this year
- 10:56Speaker 5: and is a factor. If you're turning to James Robinson
- 10:59Speaker 5: in Time Ongomery because those two guys didn't pan out,
- 11:02Speaker 5: then you kind of missed on the draft picks right,
- 11:04Speaker 5: and there was a lot of guys in the fourth
- 11:06Speaker 5: round that went around Pierre Strong that are productive players,
- 11:09Speaker 5: that were good players, and then Isaiah bicheck Will obviously
- 11:12Speaker 5: went in the seventh round. So if you look back
- 11:15Speaker 5: on it and you get nothing out of those two guys, know,
- 11:18Speaker 5: pre mad, I'm mad about something that hasn't happened yet,
- 11:20Speaker 5: but no offense. I just kind of feel like James
- 11:23Speaker 5: Robinson and Time Montgomery shouldn't be major factors. If everything
- 11:27Speaker 5: works out the way you want it to, those guys
- 11:30Speaker 5: should be. One of them will be on the roster
- 11:32Speaker 5: as the fourth running back, but in general, it should
- 11:35Speaker 5: be the two second year guys that are taking on
- 11:37Speaker 5: the load left behind by Damian Harris.
- 11:40Speaker 6: Absolutely, Well, we got some some emails rolling in. You know,
- 11:42Speaker 6: shoot us our email web radio at Patriots dot com.
- 11:45Speaker 3: Give us a call eight five to five, Pats five
- 11:47Speaker 3: hundred be here for the next couple of hours.
- 11:51Speaker 6: You know, people are writing in about schedule leaks and
- 11:53Speaker 6: all that kind of stuff. You guys know where a
- 11:54Speaker 6: little bit in a weird, weird spot to talk about
- 11:57Speaker 6: all that stuff. But yeah, well we'll see everything will
- 12:00Speaker 6: officially come out tonight and then we can we can
- 12:02Speaker 6: all chat about next week. But I just any any
- 12:04Speaker 6: particular games you guys are looking they're looking at on
- 12:07Speaker 6: the schedule.
- 12:08Speaker 3: In turn, not for me, but you know, Evan and
- 12:10Speaker 3: I were talking before the show started, and I agree
- 12:14Speaker 3: for me, it's all about the holidays, and there are
- 12:17Speaker 3: you know, there's a cycle that goes around where Christmas
- 12:20Speaker 3: and New Year's fall on the weekends, and it was
- 12:22Speaker 3: last year like that, it's this year like that. So
- 12:25Speaker 3: the full slate is on Christmas Eve. There's three games
- 12:27Speaker 3: I think a triple header on Christmas Day. So I mean, obviously,
- 12:31Speaker 3: if you're not playing the Thursday night game heading into
- 12:34Speaker 3: Christmas weekend, you're going to be playing on Christmas again.
- 12:38Speaker 3: So that's that's all I would care about. For me personally,
- 12:41Speaker 3: I already know who they're playing. I know where they're playing,
- 12:44Speaker 3: and you know, we did find out about the Indianapolis
- 12:46Speaker 3: game in Germany, but we knew they were playing in
- 12:49Speaker 3: Germany for one of the home games. It's the Colts,
- 12:52Speaker 3: and otherwise I'm not all that interested. You know, Thanksgiving
- 12:56Speaker 3: last year, they have a chance to play on Thanksgiving
- 12:59Speaker 3: this year Dallas because they have to go to Dallas.
- 13:02Speaker 3: You know, we'll see that. That's all I would care
- 13:04Speaker 3: about is holidays. Yeah, yeah's I mean, that's that's us.
- 13:08Speaker 3: What are those days going to be? I I'm just
- 13:11Speaker 3: curious too.
- 13:11Speaker 6: I always look for like the division games and how
- 13:13Speaker 6: does it kind of break up they've had the last
- 13:15Speaker 6: couple of years. It's been, you know, weird where they've
- 13:17Speaker 6: had like Miami has been the book end. They played
- 13:20Speaker 6: the Jets in the middle and then they like bang
- 13:21Speaker 6: out Buffalo twice in like December and the last you know,
- 13:24Speaker 6: so that's kind of fed into how the season's gone
- 13:27Speaker 6: the last couple of years. Always curious to just about
- 13:29Speaker 6: when do you got to go to Buffalo? When does
- 13:31Speaker 6: Miami got to come here? When do you have to
- 13:33Speaker 6: go there? Are you're playing in Florida, you know, in
- 13:35Speaker 6: the in the heat, or are they coming up here
- 13:37Speaker 6: in the cold?
- 13:37Speaker 3: Maybe both?
- 13:39Speaker 6: But the division games are huge, And of course Aaron
- 13:41Speaker 6: Rodgers and I think what was what was revealed that the.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Jets opening game? I think was was revealed? I think
- 13:47Speaker 3: I think, well, is that official Monday night game? Jets Bills?
- 13:51Speaker 3: Just bill Jets Bills opening Monday night week? One minute?
- 13:55Speaker 3: And I did see the opener itself, the NFL kickoff
- 13:58Speaker 3: Lions Lions Chiefs, So Lion's getting a little bit of
- 14:02Speaker 3: I don't know, it's like I heard somebody saal national games.
- 14:07Speaker 3: I guess as that's I mean, that's a big window,
- 14:09Speaker 3: the NFL opener, And I know they don't want to
- 14:11Speaker 3: put necessarily the best possible matchup on that, because it's
- 14:15Speaker 3: going to be a great rating anyway, but they also
- 14:18Speaker 3: don't want to put a lousy one. And I think
- 14:21Speaker 3: there's probably some optimism in Detroit that they haven't had
- 14:24Speaker 3: in recent years. You want to make sure you capitalize
- 14:27Speaker 3: on that. Like let's just say, for argument's sake, you
- 14:29Speaker 3: wanted to put Lions at Chiefs in primetime. Well, I'd
- 14:32Speaker 3: rather do it in week one than week nine, because
- 14:35Speaker 3: all due respect to Dan Campbell in the line, there's
- 14:37Speaker 3: a chance that they're you know, three and six, you know,
- 14:40Speaker 3: going into to week ten or something like that. You
- 14:43Speaker 3: don't want to run that risk. So Week one, you know,
- 14:46Speaker 3: there's a lot of optim optimism heading into that game.
- 14:49Speaker 3: Like think about last year. You know, the Rams are
- 14:52Speaker 3: playing because they were obviously defending Super Bowl champs. It
- 14:54Speaker 3: was a great matchup Opening night, It's Buffalo against the Rams.
- 14:58Speaker 3: You know, if that Buffalo Rams game took in Week twelve,
- 15:00Speaker 3: it was a you know, would have been terrible with
- 15:03Speaker 3: no buzz.
- 15:04Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 15:04Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that's what the primetime game slate. I
- 15:07Speaker 5: always look at that because it tells me to the
- 15:09Speaker 5: teams that the NFL trusts are gonna be good and
- 15:13Speaker 5: you know, they trust the infrastructure of the organization and
- 15:16Speaker 5: the team and the roster is gonna be good enough
- 15:19Speaker 5: that you can schedule a December primetime game and not
- 15:23Speaker 5: worry that it's gonna be Russell Wilson two point zero
- 15:25Speaker 5: and you're gonna have this horrible Broncos team on primetime.
- 15:28Speaker 5: Six times in the second half of the season like
- 15:31Speaker 5: last year. Yeah, So that's I thing something that's gonna
- 15:35Speaker 5: be interesting now. I know there's more flexibility with the
- 15:38Speaker 5: flex scheduling and getting those games out of there. But
- 15:41Speaker 5: you always wonder teams, certain teams that kind of on
- 15:45Speaker 5: the fence about to you, if you're gonna give them
- 15:47Speaker 5: primetime games because they have enough juice to be in primetime,
- 15:50Speaker 5: do you do it early just so that you don't
- 15:52Speaker 5: run into that because I can see a couple of
- 15:55Speaker 5: teams the darlings of the offseason, just like the Broncos
- 15:58Speaker 5: were last year being a Broncos some of one of
- 16:00Speaker 5: those teams that's not going to work out, like somebody
- 16:02Speaker 5: is gonna get it.
- 16:03Speaker 3: Right to me, is a prime candidate for that. Now.
- 16:05Speaker 3: I think that they have some some pieces, and you know,
- 16:09Speaker 3: I think they added some intriguing guys in the draft too.
- 16:12Speaker 3: But I'm not going to be stunned if they're like
- 16:14Speaker 3: stumbling around same as last year or they did here
- 16:19Speaker 3: in that game, I thought, I to Paul, I wanted
- 16:21Speaker 3: to highlight the entire team. That's another ruck something you said.
- 16:25Speaker 6: Though that I thought was was insightful, as you know,
- 16:27Speaker 6: to do just just the fact that it's the Colts
- 16:30Speaker 6: that you're losing, because it's a big part that you're
- 16:32Speaker 6: going to lose a home game for the Patriots to
- 16:34Speaker 6: go to Germany, and your course excited to go to Germany.
- 16:36Speaker 6: It's a home market now, all that, but you do
- 16:38Speaker 6: lose a game here in the revenue that you get.
- 16:40Speaker 6: But it being Indie with Anthony Richardson at quarterback, a
- 16:43Speaker 6: little bit of transition going there. If you're going to
- 16:45Speaker 6: lose a game, you wouldn't want to lose Kansas City.
- 16:46Speaker 6: You wouldn't want to lose Philadelphia, you know those prime
- 16:49Speaker 6: marquee games.
- 16:49Speaker 3: I think it was the worst game on the home
- 16:52Speaker 3: schedule out of the nine home opponents. I think that
- 16:56Speaker 3: was probably the one. You're going Washington Commanders, New Orleans, Indie,
- 17:02Speaker 3: and I look at the two NFC teams as teams
- 17:05Speaker 3: that you don't see regularly, even though New Orleans was
- 17:08Speaker 3: just here a couple of years ago. The way it
- 17:11Speaker 3: worked with that extra game, they lined up with the
- 17:14Speaker 3: NFC South third place team, I think that ended up
- 17:17Speaker 3: being New Orleans. So by happenstance, I would have chosen
- 17:20Speaker 3: the Colts. The only thing about the Colts to me
- 17:23Speaker 3: that is at all intriguing right now is Anthony Richardson
- 17:26Speaker 3: and when he plays, And.
- 17:28Speaker 5: I do think yet by that point of the year
- 17:29Speaker 5: he might be playing. Yeah, I don't think he's I
- 17:31Speaker 5: don't know if he'll be he you right away, but
- 17:33Speaker 5: I think by week twelve you might have him in there,
- 17:37Speaker 5: So that that would be exciting that yeah, if we
- 17:39Speaker 5: got to go all the way over there, that at
- 17:41Speaker 5: least like Anthony Riddinson will be there.
- 17:43Speaker 3: And if you're you know, I could see that like
- 17:46Speaker 3: let's say he starts playing, maybe plays four or five
- 17:49Speaker 3: games and he show you know, like remember Deshaun Watson
- 17:51Speaker 3: when he started to play in a little bit and
- 17:53Speaker 3: it only took him three or four games before you said, Wow,
- 17:56Speaker 3: this guy could play. And if that's like that, then
- 17:59Speaker 3: maybe we'll look at it and say, oh, I wish
- 18:01Speaker 3: that Colts game in Fox. They get the dust off
- 18:03Speaker 3: the old Bill Belichick versus rookie quarterback stats that always
- 18:06Speaker 3: get get thrown around and thrown about.
- 18:09Speaker 6: But yeah, the Commanders was one for me too. That
- 18:11Speaker 6: was just kind of but as you said, you don't
- 18:13Speaker 6: really get to see those those teams a lot. But
- 18:15Speaker 6: I mean the Chiefs that I mean that that now
- 18:17Speaker 6: will be a home game now that they're not you know,
- 18:19Speaker 6: going to play I mean, I know Kansas City's playing
- 18:21Speaker 6: in Germany as well, but that game will be here.
- 18:24Speaker 3: So that's good news. Philadelphia will be here.
- 18:27Speaker 6: You mentioned the Saints Chargers too, so you know, getting
- 18:30Speaker 6: a little cross section here, some good young teams, I think. Uh,
- 18:34Speaker 6: and of course going to.
- 18:35Speaker 3: Jerry's World, which I saw report that that there's a
- 18:37Speaker 3: Thanksgiving that they're going to play somebody on Thanksgiving, not
- 18:40Speaker 3: the Patriots, so I'm I saw Washington tied to them,
- 18:44Speaker 3: but I don't know if that was one of the
- 18:45Speaker 3: ones that was announced. Yeah, so so you know, we're
- 18:48Speaker 3: all that's why we're not getting into, like Mike said,
- 18:51Speaker 3: you know, we're not getting into what is official and
- 18:54Speaker 3: what isn't official because we don't know. We're not going
- 18:56Speaker 3: to touch it. That's right, that's right. But a couple
- 18:59Speaker 3: of other things, the housekeeping things.
- 19:01Speaker 6: So we did pr officially announced that we'll get some
- 19:05Speaker 6: access to a couple o t as in a couple
- 19:06Speaker 6: of weeks. That went out last night, so that will
- 19:08Speaker 6: be believe two weeks from today will be the first
- 19:10Speaker 6: time we'll get a glimp glimpse at them and then Friday, uh,
- 19:13Speaker 6: and then I think the.
- 19:14Speaker 3: Following week, so scheduled for three practices.
- 19:16Speaker 6: Last year, I think we only got two OTAs and
- 19:18Speaker 6: then we got too mini camp practices. Mini camp will
- 19:21Speaker 6: be then the following week, So a lot going on.
- 19:24Speaker 6: I mean, it'll be you know, it's it's like the
- 19:26Speaker 6: off season. But you're also like, we're meeting.
- 19:28Speaker 3: With guys, the schedules coming out, they're gonna be. They're
- 19:31Speaker 3: having a food truck party out there as well. We
- 19:33Speaker 3: don't mean and even't tried to walk what's this? I know,
- 19:35Speaker 3: I think not for us.
- 19:36Speaker 6: No, it was kind of we tried to cut around
- 19:38Speaker 6: because now the new media area is down over at
- 19:41Speaker 6: E two, so we just went to walk out and
- 19:43Speaker 6: around in front of football, but it was all blocked
- 19:45Speaker 6: off and they had a bunch of food trucks there.
- 19:46Speaker 3: So I assume this is one of those spring player activities,
- 19:49Speaker 3: team building team. I thought, I thought, you know, the
- 19:52Speaker 3: special people upstairs were giving access to something, especially food.
- 19:56Speaker 3: Looked like there was an ice cream truck to got food.
- 20:00Speaker 3: Go for some food right now, But why didn't you
- 20:03Speaker 3: order something? I know I forgot and you know It's
- 20:05Speaker 3: just we do have a wonderful new service here, but
- 20:07Speaker 3: I always we do have a one I didn't know
- 20:09Speaker 3: about the pork mac and cheese. That sounded like a
- 20:11Speaker 3: little bit much uh for me today, but let's uh.
- 20:15Speaker 3: Rob Rob called right in, So I'm gonna jump over
- 20:17Speaker 3: to the phone here just a little bit early here
- 20:19Speaker 3: and let Rob from South Carolina check in. Hey, Rob,
- 20:21Speaker 3: what's going on?
- 20:22Speaker 10: Hey, how are you guys doing today?
- 20:24Speaker 3: Good?
- 20:24Speaker 10: Good, good, Well, I'm gonna probably do your proud Deuce.
- 20:31Speaker 10: I'm mainly the reason why I called in is because
- 20:34Speaker 10: I'm actually kind of upset by the fact that they're
- 20:36Speaker 10: gonna celebrate Tom Brady in the first seasons.
- 20:40Speaker 3: Yeah right, Can I ask, with all serious what why
- 20:45Speaker 3: would that in any way upset you?
- 20:48Speaker 10: Okay? So I was I'm sort of joking, paul.
- 20:51Speaker 3: A, right, Okay, I thought you were, But then when
- 20:55Speaker 3: you didn't laugh after it, I was like, Deuce is
- 20:57Speaker 3: the only one I know that doesn't want go do
- 21:00Speaker 3: it Tampa, because I am I'm on a panel here
- 21:04Speaker 3: with three there's three of us, and two kind of
- 21:07Speaker 3: just have no more use for Tom Brady. So I
- 21:10Speaker 3: never know, I like I would think that I'm in
- 21:12Speaker 3: the majority of people who you know, respect to Brady wrong,
- 21:16Speaker 3: but I'm not. He's winning me back ever since, like
- 21:20Speaker 3: I don't know about eight am this morning.
- 21:22Speaker 5: Yeah, no, when I saw that come across my phone,
- 21:24Speaker 5: I was like, come back, Dad, please let by gone?
- 21:29Speaker 11: Yes?
- 21:29Speaker 3: Right, okay, Well, you know my apology.
- 21:32Speaker 10: Making emotions like you're you're excited because of what he
- 21:35Speaker 10: did for the franchise and then you kind of feel
- 21:37Speaker 10: like the tilted lover because he left. And I was
- 21:41Speaker 10: really upset when he left, simply because he had a
- 21:43Speaker 10: chance to do something that very few players get to
- 21:46Speaker 10: do in this day and age, which to stay with
- 21:47Speaker 10: the team that they're dafted them. And so that was
- 21:50Speaker 10: my primary, uh fault if you will, with him leaving
- 21:56Speaker 10: h And the main thing was it was he was
- 21:58Speaker 10: the one that changed, not Bill Belichick. And I'm not
- 22:00Speaker 10: trying to defend a chick. I'm just saying, like, over
- 22:03Speaker 10: the twenty years, the only one that changed was Tom Brady.
- 22:05Speaker 10: So that was where my source of frustration came from.
- 22:09Speaker 10: But I am glad that he is coming back and
- 22:12Speaker 10: he can retire hopefully a Patriots.
- 22:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I would agree with Rob's assessment. Then what Brady
- 22:17Speaker 3: changed and Belichick really didn't, or at least more than
- 22:20Speaker 3: Belichick did. But I think that the decision for him
- 22:25Speaker 3: to leave was Belichick's. Yeah, like more so than Brady's kind.
- 22:29Speaker 6: Of related l from Wisconsin and a email, than just
- 22:31Speaker 6: saying maybe Brady's last game would have been so tough
- 22:33Speaker 6: and disappointing if the GM could have built a team
- 22:35Speaker 6: around him rather than throwing scraps and hoping Brady could
- 22:38Speaker 6: pull them across the finish line.
- 22:41Speaker 3: Thank you, Elle, But I mean that's uh, I mean,
- 22:45Speaker 3: I can't be upset about things that happened five years
- 22:48Speaker 3: ago anymore. No, Yeah, that's why I feel like with
- 22:51Speaker 3: the Tampa game too, I just feel like I have
- 22:53Speaker 3: a different perspective.
- 22:53Speaker 6: Not that it got me all worked up or anything.
- 22:56Speaker 6: I mean certainly didn't lead up to it. I mean
- 22:58Speaker 6: there was a lot on the you know you just a.
- 23:00Speaker 3: Friend used to get mad at me because I was
- 23:01Speaker 3: just like so tired of By's coming back. That week
- 23:06Speaker 3: was a long week of that, well, because it actually
- 23:10Speaker 3: was a long four weeks of it. Once the season started,
- 23:13Speaker 3: it was that it was just like, forget about the
- 23:17Speaker 3: first three weeks, It's all about this game.
- 23:18Speaker 5: And I was like, yeah, the nineteen thing, though, does
- 23:21Speaker 5: it is interesting like in terms of the team around him,
- 23:23Speaker 5: because I don't think it. I truly do not think
- 23:27Speaker 5: that the nineteen offense was due to a lack of trying.
- 23:30Speaker 5: They just didn't try correctly. Like they drafted to kill
- 23:32Speaker 5: Harry in the first round.
- 23:34Speaker 3: You know they what is that this new year two? Yeah?
- 23:37Speaker 5: Yeah, they traded for Mohammed Sanu at the deadline. They
- 23:39Speaker 5: drafted Nikil Harry in the first round. They signed Antonio Brown,
- 23:42Speaker 5: which we all remember in the beginning part of the season.
- 23:45Speaker 5: In the first month, they just didn't hit on the
- 23:48Speaker 5: moves that they made. And you can blame the GM
- 23:51Speaker 5: for that, like that, they poorly evaluated the talent or
- 23:56Speaker 5: whatever you want to call it in the nineteenth draft.
- 23:58Speaker 5: But if ni kil Harry he ends up being the
- 24:00Speaker 5: player they thought he was going to be, then is
- 24:03Speaker 5: it they they used the asset like they tried to
- 24:06Speaker 5: get him in another weapon when Gronk retired and they drafted.
- 24:09Speaker 6: The receiver in the first round, Tamarus Thomas in the
- 24:11Speaker 6: I mean not that he was still but you know
- 24:13Speaker 6: they were they were throwing stuff at the They were
- 24:15Speaker 6: throwing stuff at the wall.
- 24:16Speaker 3: That's what. It didn't work. No, it just didn't. And
- 24:19Speaker 3: I mean the Mohammed Sanu think can still make you sick.
- 24:22Speaker 3: Trading a second round pick for that guy. Yeah, he's
- 24:24Speaker 3: been in the news. He wants, he wants to come back.
- 24:28Speaker 3: Not he he was done four years ago. I remember
- 24:32Speaker 3: him being like, you know, he just was so confident
- 24:35Speaker 3: when he got here that it was all going to
- 24:36Speaker 3: be great. And you know, I remember the squeeze the
- 24:39Speaker 3: Baltimore game. Wasn't the Baltimore game that he caught a
- 24:42Speaker 3: bunch of passes.
- 24:43Speaker 5: Yeah, he came out of the gate pretty well. Yeah,
- 24:46Speaker 5: it was Baltimore.
- 24:46Speaker 3: I think that was a rough loss, though I don't
- 24:49Speaker 3: I forget. Yeah, oh yeah, he was one of the
- 24:51Speaker 3: bright spots Mike mixing up years. It's not like people
- 24:56Speaker 3: you're I think you're right. I don't know that sounds
- 24:58Speaker 3: you're you're dead on with sinew And I remember him
- 25:00Speaker 3: catching a bunch of like insignificant, like eight yard passes. Yeah, yeah,
- 25:04Speaker 3: but he had like a lot of them, and everybody
- 25:06Speaker 3: was like it was against Baltimore. If I'm not mistake.
- 25:11Speaker 5: He got injured to he injured his ankle at some
- 25:13Speaker 5: point when he got with the Patriots, and I think
- 25:15Speaker 5: it was on a turning a punt, yeah, because they
- 25:17Speaker 5: had to put him back on punts, right, and he
- 25:19Speaker 5: injured his ankle, and that at that point he that
- 25:21Speaker 5: was it. He was already not he's already at like
- 25:24Speaker 5: seventy five percent.
- 25:25Speaker 6: And then I think he hit on a pretty good
- 25:28Speaker 6: Evan like because I it's not that they didn't try, Like,
- 25:31Speaker 6: I think that there were a lot of, you know,
- 25:32Speaker 6: things you could point to that, well, they drafted a
- 25:34Speaker 6: first round receiver, they traded a second round pick for
- 25:36Speaker 6: a receiver. You know, the Antonio Brown thing blew up.
- 25:38Speaker 6: I just it goes for me as always goes back
- 25:41Speaker 6: to the draft. You know that was there was just
- 25:42Speaker 6: the picks that you missed on and Harry being a
- 25:44Speaker 6: primary one. Although at that point, you know, what were
- 25:47Speaker 6: you expecting him to come in and do I mean,
- 25:49Speaker 6: even when you're still going to get ab early in
- 25:52Speaker 6: the season, it acknowledges like we don't expect me kill
- 25:54Speaker 6: but by that point they had to because he was hurt.
- 25:57Speaker 5: Right, So even if nikkil Harry and up being a
- 26:01Speaker 5: fine player, like even if he ends up being Sony
- 26:03Speaker 5: Michelle or Isaiah Winner, one of these first round picks
- 26:06Speaker 5: that they've had recently that hasn't panned out in terms
- 26:09Speaker 5: of being a ten year Patriot. But was just somebody
- 26:12Speaker 5: that gave you some game, gave you something, yea. Then
- 26:15Speaker 5: it's totally a different conversation in nineteen because the defense
- 26:18Speaker 5: I wasn't great, and I know that a lot of
- 26:20Speaker 5: it was fools gold early on in the season for
- 26:22Speaker 5: that defense. But I still think that defense was good
- 26:24Speaker 5: enough that if the offense had been pulling it side
- 26:27Speaker 5: of the rope, that they would have been a more
- 26:32Speaker 5: competitive team down the stretch.
- 26:33Speaker 3: Than they were.
- 26:34Speaker 6: Well L from Wisconsin writing back, and sorry, Evan, he
- 26:39Speaker 6: says you're wrong. So lets you say, talking about twenty nineteen,
- 26:42Speaker 6: I'm not going to give BB credit for trying. He
- 26:45Speaker 6: had been a coach for like twenty years. We don't
- 26:47Speaker 6: get a trophy for trying to draft the same receiver
- 26:50Speaker 6: that week.
- 26:50Speaker 5: When I'm critical of Bill and I'm questioning the greatest
- 26:54Speaker 5: coach of all time, and who am I to do that?
- 26:56Speaker 5: And then when I say that he tried, then I'm
- 26:58Speaker 5: not critical enough. I I don't know, well, I mean,
- 27:02Speaker 5: he took some swings at that part. I mean they
- 27:04Speaker 5: took some swings and the noise, ignore the noise. Yeah,
- 27:08Speaker 5: I was just looking up snow from that year and
- 27:11Speaker 5: it was right. I think we all had it right.
- 27:13Speaker 3: Yeah. He had ten catches for eighty one yards in
- 27:15Speaker 3: that Baltimore game. He had twenty six catches as a Patriot,
- 27:19Speaker 3: Like it was just this one day where he caught
- 27:21Speaker 3: a bunch, in my opinion, of insignificant short passes while
- 27:24Speaker 3: they were trailing by two scores. Yeah, there were a
- 27:26Speaker 3: lot of hot so they were never really in. Yeah,
- 27:28Speaker 3: they were never really in that game.
- 27:29Speaker 12: Ye.
- 27:30Speaker 3: And you know, just looking at the rest of it
- 27:32Speaker 3: before that, it was two catches, two catches, three catches,
- 27:36Speaker 3: one catch, two catch, three catch, three catch, and he
- 27:38Speaker 3: missed a game like just nothing.
- 27:42Speaker 5: I do remember standing in front of his locker when
- 27:44Speaker 5: they first made the move and him talking for the
- 27:47Speaker 5: first time, and he was the juice and the squeeze
- 27:50Speaker 5: and he was like, I'm I'm here, and I'm it's
- 27:52Speaker 5: gonna be great.
- 27:54Speaker 3: I got this.
- 27:55Speaker 5: And honestly at the time, I liked his game for them,
- 27:59Speaker 5: like I thought they he would translate well as a smart,
- 28:02Speaker 5: shifty route runner, good hands like I did think that
- 28:05Speaker 5: he was a good a good pick up for them.
- 28:07Speaker 5: He just didn't have the juice anymore.
- 28:09Speaker 3: He just didn't have it. I mean kind of. I
- 28:11Speaker 3: mean it would have would it be back to comparison
- 28:14Speaker 3: to say, somewhere in the in the realm of Juju,
- 28:16Speaker 3: of of kind of a big slot calmparison, compay, comparison,
- 28:21Speaker 3: apologize the same in the in the world. I mean,
- 28:25Speaker 3: I Juju got a little bit of juice on the
- 28:27Speaker 3: on the hoof, I think like Juju has left in
- 28:30Speaker 3: the No, no, no, I'm not trying. I thought he
- 28:32Speaker 3: looked like a guy was big slots pretty close to
- 28:35Speaker 3: you know, yeah, not known for their quickness, but you know,
- 28:38Speaker 3: outstanding athleticism necessarily, but yeah, good route runners, strong, you know.
- 28:44Speaker 3: You know s new was a good player in Atlanta. Yeah,
- 28:48Speaker 3: just not for for us, even in Cincinnati. I think
- 28:50Speaker 3: he had some MOMENTSINNT. I forgot about those early years
- 28:53Speaker 3: in Cincinnati. I got overshadowed by.
- 28:56Speaker 6: Kind of him being on Atlanta during Super Bowl fifty
- 28:58Speaker 6: two and all them Arry going on or Super fifty one. Sorry,
- 29:02Speaker 6: you know, all the talk going on with him on
- 29:04Speaker 6: the sideline being like man, they got Tom Brady like
- 29:06Speaker 6: they seemed to know, they knew what was coming.
- 29:11Speaker 3: Ryan. I don't feel bad. Let's speaking to Ryan. Let's
- 29:14Speaker 3: let's jump to Ryan in Virginia. Hey Ryan, what's going on? Ryan? Hello? Ryan?
- 29:25Speaker 3: One stop eating sands. Oh he's on the other line.
- 29:29Speaker 3: All right, we're hopping over. Hey Ryan, what's going on in.
- 29:33Speaker 5: Hey?
- 29:33Speaker 11: You guys teaching real right?
- 29:34Speaker 4: Yeah? There are you?
- 29:34Speaker 2: Good?
- 29:36Speaker 11: Awesome, great off and on listener. First time caller, just
- 29:40Speaker 11: really quickly want to shout out Bill Murray as it
- 29:43Speaker 11: will be Marry Brad. I hope fourth year is the
- 29:45Speaker 11: charm and he finally cracks the roster. But I got
- 29:47Speaker 11: a two things for you. I don't know if you
- 29:50Speaker 11: guys saw at the top of the show the announced
- 29:52Speaker 11: that Week one will be Eagles Past. So I thought,
- 29:55Speaker 11: what a great.
- 29:56Speaker 3: Way to honor.
- 29:59Speaker 11: The Eagle A big plug.
- 30:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I haven't heard that. Now, I'm not telling you
- 30:04Speaker 3: what's wrong. I'm just saying I haven't heard anybody announce that.
- 30:07Speaker 3: So there's some reports that that's the game. But now
- 30:09Speaker 3: I'm talking about like the league not official. We should
- 30:13Speaker 3: get those.
- 30:14Speaker 11: Yeah, a good game. The other thing I just wanted
- 30:18Speaker 11: to touch on you guys mentioned the top of the
- 30:20Speaker 11: show was the running back room. We didn't draft anybody,
- 30:24Speaker 11: so that's what got me a little concerned, was just that,
- 30:27Speaker 11: you know, that's the position with the most wear and tear,
- 30:30Speaker 11: and knowing that our running back room right now is Stevenson,
- 30:33Speaker 11: great back, got a little banged up towards the end
- 30:35Speaker 11: of last year, Robinson who's coming off big injury, and
- 30:39Speaker 11: then two kind of rookies who haven't really proved anything yet.
- 30:43Speaker 11: So just wondering, you know, if there's any level of
- 30:46Speaker 11: concern there for you guys, and if we need to
- 30:48Speaker 11: bring in anybody else no pleasure, Yeah, no.
- 30:54Speaker 3: I mean look if I mean if Montgomery and and
- 30:58Speaker 3: and what's the space the Robinson are like healthy is
- 31:02Speaker 3: just what we just talked to him.
- 31:06Speaker 6: If those guys aren't healthier or don't really can't really
- 31:08Speaker 6: get back to what they were hoping they might be,
- 31:11Speaker 6: and the two rookies from last year don't really develop
- 31:13Speaker 6: and all of a sudden.
- 31:15Speaker 3: If you feel like yeah, then then maybe you're in trouble.
- 31:18Speaker 3: When in Remandre, you know, it gets hurt, then the
- 31:22Speaker 3: JJ Taylor.
- 31:23Speaker 6: H No, I mean I think that at least on paper,
- 31:26Speaker 6: they have a good combination of young guys that they've
- 31:28Speaker 6: expended draft picks on, and you know, remandre Is is
- 31:31Speaker 6: clearly the one a piece, but I don't know, I
- 31:35Speaker 6: haven't completely ruled out Robinson a monk army. I think
- 31:37Speaker 6: with running back, you kind of acquire these guys, put
- 31:40Speaker 6: them on the roster and just see how it plays
- 31:42Speaker 6: out with competition and injuries, and don't try to get
- 31:44Speaker 6: too attached.
- 31:45Speaker 3: I do think they're replacement. But I think Robinson, you know,
- 31:48Speaker 3: in his ability to catch the ball too, I think
- 31:51Speaker 3: as a as a complimentary piece, maybe take some of
- 31:54Speaker 3: that burden off of Stevenson that he racked up a
- 31:58Speaker 3: lot of touches as a receiver. So I think that
- 32:01Speaker 3: that Montgomery, I'm not really expecting anything from enough because
- 32:04Speaker 3: I don't think he's a good player, But I just think,
- 32:08Speaker 3: you know, at this stage, we haven't seen him for
- 32:10Speaker 3: so long healthy, it's hard to just pencil him in
- 32:13Speaker 3: for a role.
- 32:14Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 32:14Speaker 3: You know, if you know, Fred likes to say those
- 32:16Speaker 3: kinds of guys, that's gravy. If we show up in
- 32:20Speaker 3: training camp and we see him like he was last year,
- 32:22Speaker 3: darting around and looking like he could fill a significant
- 32:25Speaker 3: piece to the puzzle great, but I'm not expecting that.
- 32:28Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that there's maybe just I understand that
- 32:32Speaker 5: we didn't get a lot of exposures to Pierre Strong
- 32:35Speaker 5: because he didn't play much in regular season games, but
- 32:39Speaker 5: there's some juice there. And I just think in the
- 32:42Speaker 5: West Coast trip last year in Arizona in Vegas that
- 32:45Speaker 5: I saw enough that at that position, of all positions,
- 32:49Speaker 5: those guys are so replaceable, and I really feel like
- 32:52Speaker 5: Pierre Strong is somebody that with more opportunities and more touches,
- 32:56Speaker 5: I think he's gonna flash a little bit more. And
- 32:57Speaker 5: even a guy like Kevin Harry, So I think the
- 32:59Speaker 5: biggest thing with him was ball security, and he did
- 33:02Speaker 5: put the ball on the ground a little bit in
- 33:03Speaker 5: the summer, and that's going to concern them. But if
- 33:06Speaker 5: he fixes that, and he's somebody that can at least
- 33:09Speaker 5: run between the tackles and get you some yards as
- 33:11Speaker 5: a power back on first down, so I'd never worry
- 33:14Speaker 5: about running backs. It's just they'll find somebody to run
- 33:17Speaker 5: the football, and it's more about everything else.
- 33:20Speaker 3: Do you think that they're actively trying to get away
- 33:23Speaker 3: from having a specific third down back and they're trying
- 33:26Speaker 3: to maybe acquire players that not so much Harris, but
- 33:29Speaker 3: I almost feel like between Ramandre Robinson, what's his face right, Montgomery,
- 33:35Speaker 3: I do think that that's wrong. All those guys are
- 33:37Speaker 3: pretty balanced. I do think that was a big part
- 33:39Speaker 3: of it last year. And I think we saw it
- 33:41Speaker 3: in the summer a little bit in preseason games where
- 33:44Speaker 3: it was, Okay, this is going to be Damian Harris's series,
- 33:48Speaker 3: and you know in a preseason it, this is going
- 33:50Speaker 3: to be Stevenson's, this is going to be Montgomery. She
- 33:52Speaker 3: saw them out there on first down, carrying the ball
- 33:55Speaker 3: on third down, being candidates to catch the ball, and
- 33:59Speaker 3: I think they do want that. However, I think that
- 34:03Speaker 3: when they saw it actually play out that way, I
- 34:06Speaker 3: wonder if they're looking at it and saying, this is
- 34:09Speaker 3: why we didn't really do a lot of that in
- 34:10Speaker 3: the first place, because I think Stevenson ended up really
- 34:13Speaker 3: wearing down, yeah, playing too much because he had to
- 34:16Speaker 3: play too much. Yeah, I think that there's a all
- 34:20Speaker 3: the play calling tendencies last year got messed up because
- 34:23Speaker 3: he was calling the place. But they they the years
- 34:26Speaker 3: before that, the years before that, you know, they were
- 34:32Speaker 3: very predictable based off of personnel. You know, they have
- 34:35Speaker 3: Sony Michelle in the backfield with James Devlin and the
- 34:38Speaker 3: power eye, and like seventy percent of the time that
- 34:40Speaker 3: was a run and the other and I heard a
- 34:42Speaker 3: lot of criticism for Josh McDaniels with regard to exactly.
- 34:46Speaker 5: What right, And then the other thirty percent was play
- 34:48Speaker 5: action off of the run. So you knew that you
- 34:51Speaker 5: were getting into that sort of game where they're going
- 34:54Speaker 5: to be under center, it's going to be their power run,
- 34:56Speaker 5: or it's going to be play action off the power action,
- 34:58Speaker 5: And that was just a that it was going to go.
- 35:01Speaker 5: And then last year they ditched a full back, they
- 35:03Speaker 5: become a little bit more unpredictable in theory, it just
- 35:07Speaker 5: didn't work out that way because of how the sequencing
- 35:09Speaker 5: of the plays went about. But I think maybe with
- 35:12Speaker 5: Bill O'Brien that they were able to mask it a
- 35:14Speaker 5: little bit more. But I also think that statistically their
- 35:19Speaker 5: early down offense was really good because they did run
- 35:22Speaker 5: the ball well and then the play action was effective
- 35:25Speaker 5: because they married it up and they had the whole
- 35:27Speaker 5: thing going. So I don't know how much that predictability
- 35:29Speaker 5: necessarily really hurt them in those offenses because they were
- 35:33Speaker 5: so a productive off of play action because of how
- 35:36Speaker 5: good they were running the football behind James Devlin.
- 35:40Speaker 3: So I don't know. I just wonder if if it's
- 35:43Speaker 3: a little bit of something that you're trading off because
- 35:45Speaker 3: James White was just so effective as a passer, and
- 35:48Speaker 3: those guys that we have all can catch, but are
- 35:51Speaker 3: any of them really moving the needle like you know,
- 35:54Speaker 3: like like James White did as a receipt I something
- 35:56Speaker 3: to be accounted. I do think Montgomery has the potential
- 36:00Speaker 3: to be like more like White than the other guys
- 36:02Speaker 3: because of his background as a receiver. I think he's
- 36:05Speaker 3: a better route runner because I understand what you're saying,
- 36:08Speaker 3: Mike It there's one thing, like I think romondre Stevenson
- 36:10Speaker 3: has every bit uh effective catching the ball as James
- 36:15Speaker 3: White is like soft hands ability to actually physically catch
- 36:19Speaker 3: the ball. But I think setting up linebackers and you know,
- 36:22Speaker 3: reading the zones and doing those kinds of things, I
- 36:25Speaker 3: think James White was was special in that regard. He
- 36:28Speaker 3: didn't do it because he was so much faster than
- 36:30Speaker 3: everybody or you know, obviously not bigger and stronger than everybody,
- 36:33Speaker 3: but he understood how to set linebackers up, find those
- 36:36Speaker 3: matchups out in space. And I don't think Stevenson o'harris
- 36:40Speaker 3: last year, Damian Harris now were as effective like that
- 36:44Speaker 3: as as James White was, but they could catch the ball,
- 36:47Speaker 3: you think, like just it never looked like that, like
- 36:49Speaker 3: some of those like wheel routes.
- 36:50Speaker 6: Remember from James White up the sideline where Mac hit.
- 36:52Speaker 3: Him, you know, just streaking. I mean those aren't really
- 36:54Speaker 3: Remondre's kind of plays. I'm not going to hit Romond
- 36:57Speaker 3: downfield so much. But I don't know, just something something
- 37:00Speaker 3: to wonder. And I do think Montgomery could be like that.
- 37:03Speaker 3: We didn't get a chance to see it, and so
- 37:07Speaker 3: everybody wanted to make peer strong that per Strong didn't
- 37:09Speaker 3: really do a ton of that in college. No, And
- 37:12Speaker 3: I wrote his profile last year and talked to his
- 37:15Speaker 3: coaches about it, and he actually the coach actually put
- 37:18Speaker 3: it on himself. It's like, you know, we probably should
- 37:20Speaker 3: have dialed up more, but we didn't want him to
- 37:22Speaker 3: be one of these guys that was getting all of
- 37:24Speaker 3: these touches and getting worn down that way. But I
- 37:28Speaker 3: think that everybody looked and said, he's not the biggest guy.
- 37:31Speaker 3: He can fly, Oh, he's got to be a third
- 37:33Speaker 3: down back when he really didn't have that in his
- 37:36Speaker 3: on his resume coming in.
- 37:37Speaker 5: Yeah, that was one hundred percent of projection with him
- 37:40Speaker 5: coming in, and I think a lot of the people
- 37:41Speaker 5: he talked to because of the skill set just assumed
- 37:44Speaker 5: that that's that was the goal with him, was to
- 37:46Speaker 5: be third down back. And I still think he could
- 37:48Speaker 5: do it, but learn it though. Yeah, Like the big
- 37:51Speaker 5: thing for me is with the third down back is
- 37:53Speaker 5: literally third like third and four, and you can't always
- 37:57Speaker 5: throw the ball down the field, Like if you can
- 37:59Speaker 5: get somebody matched up underneath on a linebacker, you can
- 38:02Speaker 5: sit down between a zone or something like that that
- 38:06Speaker 5: keeps you on schedule, that moves the chains. And I
- 38:08Speaker 5: think when you don't have a mobile quarterback that can
- 38:11Speaker 5: pick up third and four by scrambling, you kind of
- 38:15Speaker 5: have to have that safety valve or that outlet, you
- 38:17Speaker 5: know when Mac gets under duress or gets pressured, you know,
- 38:21Speaker 5: blitzes or whatever, that it's just to dump off to
- 38:23Speaker 5: the running back and you can get five yards on
- 38:25Speaker 5: third and four and you're moving the chains and you
- 38:28Speaker 5: get a new set of downs. They missed that last year.
- 38:30Speaker 5: I think they had it early with Stevenson. It felt
- 38:33Speaker 5: like he was able to do it until he started
- 38:35Speaker 5: to wear down a little bit. But I think that
- 38:37Speaker 5: they missed that just security blanket. Just dump it in
- 38:41Speaker 5: the flat on third and three and makes a guy
- 38:43Speaker 5: miss and all you know, we're still moving the chains,
- 38:45Speaker 5: even though the pass is a shorter pass and theory.
- 38:48Speaker 6: It is just kind of interesting the things that they're missing,
- 38:50Speaker 6: and by choice. But they don't have a full back anymore.
- 38:53Speaker 6: They don't really have a blocking tight end anymore. They
- 38:55Speaker 6: don't really have a traditional water bug slot receiver kind
- 38:59Speaker 6: of guy, you know, like it's just a lot of
- 39:01Speaker 6: the thing third down back, like a lot of those things.
- 39:02Speaker 3: You just you could go back through all of that.
- 39:05Speaker 3: That's good, Paul. You could go back through.
- 39:07Speaker 6: History and you can kind of name what guy that
- 39:09Speaker 6: was in almost every different version of the Patriots offense
- 39:12Speaker 6: that you saw over the last twenty years. And right
- 39:13Speaker 6: now they don't really have those pieces. I don't know,
- 39:15Speaker 6: it's just interesting. We'll see where Bill O'Brien takes it.
- 39:18Speaker 6: But phones are stacking up.
- 39:19Speaker 3: And one more thing, I wanted to add a third
- 39:21Speaker 3: down back just I think a lot of people like
- 39:24Speaker 3: they hear us say, you know, one of the things
- 39:26Speaker 3: that they're down back really has to excel in is
- 39:29Speaker 3: the blitz protection, right, you know, the blitz pick up.
- 39:32Speaker 3: And it's not so much. I mean, it's a big
- 39:35Speaker 3: part of it physical obviously, but I think most guys
- 39:39Speaker 3: can stick their nose in, get in the way enough
- 39:41Speaker 3: to give the quarterback enough time.
- 39:43Speaker 9: You know.
- 39:43Speaker 3: Certainly guy like Tom Brady, like he didn't have to
- 39:46Speaker 3: want to, you didn't have to take him out. But
- 39:48Speaker 3: to me, it's more understanding when, when and where the
- 39:50Speaker 3: pressure's coming from and the experience that I think it
- 39:54Speaker 3: takes to sort of pick up on that, you know,
- 39:56Speaker 3: the subtleties of the games that they play and not
- 39:59Speaker 3: getting fooled. Yeah, you know, sure, and I think that
- 40:02Speaker 3: that stuff that probably we saw it would be bigger
- 40:05Speaker 3: obstacles for a guy like Peter Strong than the physical
- 40:08Speaker 3: act of getting out. It's tough converting a third and four,
- 40:11Speaker 3: as Evan said.
- 40:12Speaker 5: Right, especially in the old blocking system. I don't know
- 40:15Speaker 5: what it's going to look like now with Bill O'Brien,
- 40:16Speaker 5: but a lot of the times those running backs would
- 40:18Speaker 5: have dual reads, so they'd be reading too, you know, Okay,
- 40:21Speaker 5: we're four over three.
- 40:22Speaker 3: On this side. If this guy comes and I have
- 40:24Speaker 3: this guy.
- 40:25Speaker 5: But if this guy comes, then I have to take
- 40:27Speaker 5: the nearest threat to the quarterbacks, so I actually have
- 40:28Speaker 5: that guy, and you have to make those determinations post snap.
- 40:32Speaker 5: And then they also have full, full scans, right, So
- 40:35Speaker 5: you might be put in blitz pick up and all
- 40:37Speaker 5: you're looking for is that second or third level guy
- 40:40Speaker 5: that is coming that you're not expecting. So it's not
- 40:42Speaker 5: a pressure look. But they send a late, delayed blitz
- 40:46Speaker 5: up the middle, and now you're responsible for going tackle
- 40:49Speaker 5: to tackle and scanning through the entire line of scrimmage
- 40:52Speaker 5: to find the guy that you're supposed to block. So
- 40:54Speaker 5: those are the reasons why a lot of those guys
- 40:56Speaker 5: red shirt and don't get on the field early on
- 40:58Speaker 5: is because of that. And it's it's a difficult way
- 41:01Speaker 5: about doing things. I don't know how they did it
- 41:03Speaker 5: last year, to be honest with you, but that's how
- 41:04Speaker 5: they've done it.
- 41:05Speaker 3: I used to say it all the time, like if
- 41:06Speaker 3: you go back, everybody says, well, that's why they do it.
- 41:09Speaker 3: In Foxborough. You are running back and you sit out
- 41:12Speaker 3: a year, and I say, that's not necessarily the case.
- 41:14Speaker 3: If that's the kind of running back that they project
- 41:16Speaker 3: you as, you're probably going to have a red shirt year.
- 41:18Speaker 3: If you're going to be James White, Shane Verreen type guy,
- 41:22Speaker 3: they're probably going to indoctrinate you a little bit slower
- 41:25Speaker 3: if you're a guy that they project as like a
- 41:29Speaker 3: true bell carrier. I've seen many guys come in and
- 41:33Speaker 3: step in right away and it get significant carries as
- 41:36Speaker 3: a rookie. Ridley r. Maroney. Yeah, Ridley and Maroney did it.
- 41:42Speaker 3: I mean they didn't necessarily have to be the guy,
- 41:44Speaker 3: but they they will allow you to carry the ball
- 41:48Speaker 3: because I think it's pretty obvious. It's that's more of
- 41:51Speaker 3: an instinctive position where you come in, you get the ball,
- 41:54Speaker 3: you avoid the guys trying to tackle you.
- 41:56Speaker 11: Right.
- 41:56Speaker 3: That was like James. That was like James Robinson today,
- 41:58Speaker 3: Like what do you think your game is? Like, I
- 42:00Speaker 3: don't know, get the ball, play football. Yeah. I think
- 42:02Speaker 3: it's interesting too with the like even Ben Jarvis greenellens
- 42:05Speaker 3: off the practice squad and I think he ended up
- 42:07Speaker 3: getting a thousand Johns.
- 42:08Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 42:08Speaker 5: Those those guys back then though, had the full back
- 42:11Speaker 5: and and I do find that it is interesting. And
- 42:14Speaker 5: I remember Remandre talking about last year that he actually
- 42:16Speaker 5: prefers to run without a full back because he's so
- 42:19Speaker 5: instinctive and he has that feel between the tackles to
- 42:22Speaker 5: just kind of, you know, like Le'Veon Bell used to
- 42:25Speaker 5: just kind of waited out and then pick the right spots.
- 42:27Speaker 5: But for a rookie coming in when they when they
- 42:30Speaker 5: were just like just follow James Devlin like he's going
- 42:32Speaker 5: to hit the hole and you're going to find the
- 42:33Speaker 5: hole through him.
- 42:34Speaker 3: He left out the most obvious, most recent sony Michelle
- 42:37Speaker 3: right right. It was like a huge part of your
- 42:40Speaker 3: offense found the stretch and in the playoffs as a
- 42:42Speaker 3: rookie and it was just running the ball.
- 42:44Speaker 5: Follow again behind you, follow the battering ram. Now you
- 42:47Speaker 5: have to there is a little bit more of a
- 42:49Speaker 5: read involved, right, that's correct, There is a little bit
- 42:52Speaker 5: more of a read involved now without a full back,
- 42:54Speaker 5: because you have a little bit more, say as a
- 42:56Speaker 5: running back about where exactly you run lead iso at
- 42:59Speaker 5: the full back, you're hitting one spot.
- 43:01Speaker 3: Right, all right, let's you can go back to the phones.
- 43:04Speaker 3: I'm gonna jump. I'm gonna jump to the phones. They've
- 43:06Speaker 3: been holding on out here. We got Willam from Philmy
- 43:08Speaker 3: and what's going on?
- 43:10Speaker 13: Hey, what's going on?
- 43:11Speaker 7: Like? How you doing?
- 43:11Speaker 3: Good?
- 43:12Speaker 5: Good?
- 43:12Speaker 3: Thanks for calling in?
- 43:13Speaker 7: Okay?
- 43:15Speaker 13: Anytime? Do I say, who do we play at?
- 43:20Speaker 3: Play?
- 43:20Speaker 13: Week one? I think do y'all know already?
- 43:23Speaker 6: No?
- 43:23Speaker 13: No, do you want to say nothing?
- 43:26Speaker 3: No, you could talk about we just we're not like
- 43:28Speaker 3: we can't you could. You could say whatever you want,
- 43:30Speaker 3: just fishing from anything or you know, okay, so you
- 43:34Speaker 3: can say, I mean you can week more.
- 43:36Speaker 13: Okay, how you feel about it.
- 43:39Speaker 3: I think if that's what it is, it's a big matchup.
- 43:41Speaker 3: I know they were playing Philadelphia at home. Yeah, I mean,
- 43:44Speaker 3: I mean, what week it is?
- 43:46Speaker 6: Well, I would say to that, like, I mean, I
- 43:48Speaker 6: just I think there's something interesting in that the Eagles
- 43:51Speaker 6: are getting a lot of love right now. They're kind
- 43:52Speaker 6: of the darlings that the Patriots were at one time,
- 43:54Speaker 6: and you know, everyone loves their drafts and what they've
- 43:57Speaker 6: done and for good reason. And they just paid Jalen
- 43:58Speaker 6: Hurts and they seem like, you know, the team that's
- 44:00Speaker 6: not quite Kansas City yet but is right there with him.
- 44:02Speaker 6: So I think it's it's just no matter when they play.
- 44:05Speaker 6: I think it's an interesting, you know, kind of old guard,
- 44:07Speaker 6: new guard kind of game.
- 44:08Speaker 3: I wish it was a different game. It's a measuring
- 44:10Speaker 3: stick game because that's that's one of the best teams
- 44:13Speaker 3: in football. If you want to say that there were
- 44:15Speaker 3: one hit wonder, maybe they won't be as good as
- 44:17Speaker 3: they were last year. Maybe I'm not banking. I'm not
- 44:20Speaker 3: banking on that. I think what you've seen with Philadelphia
- 44:23Speaker 3: over the last couple of years was Jalen Hurts sort
- 44:26Speaker 3: of getting the job definitively and they went nine and eight,
- 44:30Speaker 3: squeaked into the playoffs and were very competitive in Tampa
- 44:33Speaker 3: in that playoff game. And then the next year they
- 44:36Speaker 3: picked up aj Brown and went to another level along
- 44:40Speaker 3: with picking up some defensive pieces on short term contract
- 44:44Speaker 3: like guys like Hassan Reddick, James Bradbury. If they added
- 44:47Speaker 3: to a defense that was already talented and now I
- 44:49Speaker 3: think they want they're one of the best teams in football.
- 44:52Speaker 3: It's a bad matchup out of the game.
- 44:53Speaker 5: Yeah, it just is like that offense, the quack quarterback
- 44:58Speaker 5: r PO college style offense is really what it is.
- 45:02Speaker 5: And then defensively, you just mentioned the bookend to edge
- 45:05Speaker 5: rusher's like Riley Reefs Hassan Reddick right out of the gate,
- 45:08Speaker 5: Like that's gonna be throwing some people directly into the fire.
- 45:11Speaker 5: If the Patriots win that game, I would be elated, like, Wow,
- 45:16Speaker 5: you came out of the gate and you won that.
- 45:18Speaker 5: That's that's a statement.
- 45:20Speaker 3: It's already has them under five hundred.
- 45:23Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean that's but on paper, like, that's just
- 45:25Speaker 5: a terrible matchup, Like regardless of when the game was playing,
- 45:28Speaker 5: whether it was Week one or week sixteen, just on paper,
- 45:32Speaker 5: that's a horrible, horrible matchup. And I think that at
- 45:36Speaker 5: least later on in the year. And I hate to
- 45:37Speaker 5: do this, but like maybe somebody gets hurt in Philly,
- 45:40Speaker 5: you know, I don't wish that upon anyone, but maybe,
- 45:42Speaker 5: like you, later on in the year, you get lucky
- 45:44Speaker 5: and like AJ Brown is dinged up and he's and
- 45:47Speaker 5: he's not one hundred percent or something, but out of
- 45:48Speaker 5: the gate, you're not gonna get You're not gonna get that.
- 45:51Speaker 5: So I don't Yeah, that's what it is.
- 45:53Speaker 3: I don't think it.
- 45:54Speaker 13: And Mike, it's just just two more things. And that
- 45:57Speaker 13: did okay, you go okay, And to the to that
- 46:01Speaker 13: caller that called last time, that not that thought I
- 46:04Speaker 13: wasn't necessary. I just want to put this out there.
- 46:06Speaker 13: I listened to Patriots on filter from the time you
- 46:09Speaker 13: get on from Tom Pitcher filter get on to that
- 46:11Speaker 13: get off. I was gonna say something smart because I
- 46:13Speaker 13: but I said, no, I ain't gonna do it. I'm
- 46:15Speaker 13: gonna let that. I'm gonna let that ride. But I
- 46:17Speaker 13: just want to make that caller known. You know, I
- 46:20Speaker 13: ain't got the earphones. Then now this times you're just
- 46:22Speaker 13: handing me through the phone. So I hope I sound
- 46:23Speaker 13: better this time.
- 46:24Speaker 3: You sound great time.
- 46:26Speaker 13: I live it at that last but not least, Evan,
- 46:29Speaker 13: are you really trying to piss me off?
- 46:30Speaker 14: Really?
- 46:31Speaker 13: For twenty nineteen when he got the hair, are you
- 46:34Speaker 13: really you was on my good side?
- 46:36Speaker 9: Are you really.
- 46:40Speaker 13: The greatest culture of all time? When he drafted that bomb?
- 46:43Speaker 13: Are you serious? He spent more his time on ir
- 46:46Speaker 13: than playing than playing in the game.
- 46:48Speaker 9: Are you serious?
- 46:49Speaker 3: I don't know what I'm saying. I don't know what
- 46:50Speaker 3: I'm getting yelled at.
- 46:52Speaker 13: Come on, you you you've seen Tom. Tom was pissed
- 46:56Speaker 13: off man. He said, look it.
- 46:57Speaker 3: Because Tom scouted to kill Harry and knew that he
- 47:00Speaker 3: wasn't a good player.
- 47:03Speaker 5: They missed on the pic. No one's denying that, no
- 47:06Speaker 5: one's disagreeing. But the idea of drafting a receiver in
- 47:09Speaker 5: the first round was to give Tom Brady help.
- 47:12Speaker 3: It didn't. They picked the wrong guy. I don't know,
- 47:14Speaker 3: what do you? What are we arguing about? And they
- 47:16Speaker 3: picked the wrong guy on purpose because they hated Braid?
- 47:18Speaker 13: Are you the same Evan that was going off not
- 47:20Speaker 13: too long ago time out?
- 47:21Speaker 10: Oh?
- 47:22Speaker 11: They took a guard and was going off.
- 47:24Speaker 13: Remember that.
- 47:25Speaker 3: What are we arguing about right now? He wasn't a
- 47:27Speaker 3: good player.
- 47:29Speaker 9: What are we arguing about?
- 47:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't even know, but it sounded good. He
- 47:38Speaker 3: always brings the passion.
- 47:40Speaker 4: I appreciate you.
- 47:41Speaker 3: Than I know I did. I never said to Kila
- 47:44Speaker 3: is a good player? I know you just said that
- 47:46Speaker 3: it was the idea was It was clear that they
- 47:48Speaker 3: had an idea of improving the offense, and just everything
- 47:51Speaker 3: they did didn't work right. Like they deserve criticism for
- 47:55Speaker 3: picking the wrong guys.
- 47:56Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 47:56Speaker 3: Absolutely, could you feel the hill turn on that one?
- 47:58Speaker 3: On that calle age he was talking about his phone
- 48:00Speaker 3: and then all of a sudden, he's like.
- 48:01Speaker 8: And Evan and they were just like you were my boy.
- 48:05Speaker 5: I'm not allowed to say that they that they tried
- 48:08Speaker 5: by drafting to kill Harry but just can't. Even if
- 48:11Speaker 5: it's not negative involving that guy, then it's just killed.
- 48:15Speaker 3: Let's head down to North Cakilaki, see what Todd has
- 48:18Speaker 3: to say. Hey Todd, how guys?
- 48:20Speaker 9: I want you guys to get on Deuce now, since
- 48:22Speaker 9: we've already talked Evan. Deuce was on another show and
- 48:25Speaker 9: he was like Debbie Downer, you know, he was god.
- 48:28Speaker 12: He was that different than usually made heart sound like
- 48:31Speaker 12: the positive.
- 48:32Speaker 3: Heart was all over me about my my negativity. But
- 48:35Speaker 3: I didn't believe you were bad.
- 48:37Speaker 9: I didn't even know what you say.
- 48:38Speaker 12: I thought it was like Eric Skeal.
- 48:39Speaker 3: Said they were going to go nine to eight. I
- 48:41Speaker 3: mean that's optimistic.
- 48:44Speaker 9: Building on that, That's going to be my question. What
- 48:46Speaker 9: do you think the record will be this year? And
- 48:49Speaker 9: give me one positive thing that's going to lead to
- 48:51Speaker 9: it and maybe one thing that's going to hold them back,
- 48:53Speaker 9: and that's that's all I'm gonna watch. I don't want
- 48:54Speaker 9: too much negativity, Duck.
- 48:58Speaker 3: I don't like doing records either, but I think that
- 49:01Speaker 3: there'll be similar in record as they were last year.
- 49:03Speaker 3: And the reason for my optimism is Bill O'Brien, right,
- 49:07Speaker 3: My reason for negativity is an overall lack of weaponry
- 49:12Speaker 3: and explosiveness on offense. Yep, it's a fair point. I
- 49:16Speaker 3: agree that is that general and broad enough.
- 49:19Speaker 5: Their schedule what one of the hardest of the league.
- 49:22Speaker 5: It's one of the hardest in the league. Whether you
- 49:24Speaker 5: look at Vegas you know, win totals or like advanced
- 49:28Speaker 5: metrics or whatever. They have a top five hardest schedule
- 49:31Speaker 5: in the league by pretty much every measure.
- 49:34Speaker 3: And I think that when we look at what the
- 49:37Speaker 3: Patriots have done, and I do think that I'm encouraged
- 49:40Speaker 3: by the draft because I think they got, especially at
- 49:43Speaker 3: the top of the draft, guys that can help right
- 49:45Speaker 3: away at least I really really hope. So if they haven't,
- 49:49Speaker 3: then we have we're having a different a different problem
- 49:52Speaker 3: in a different conversation down the road. Okay, I think
- 49:55Speaker 3: there's reasons to be encouraged by that, but that isn't
- 50:00Speaker 3: necessarily well. People automatically looking they say, well, they won
- 50:03Speaker 3: X one year and they added this, this and this,
- 50:06Speaker 3: so they're gonna win X times three. And it doesn't
- 50:09Speaker 3: work that way because the other teams have done that too,
- 50:12Speaker 3: change too, and you have to play some teams that
- 50:16Speaker 3: you didn't have to play last year that are good
- 50:18Speaker 3: that So in other words, maybe if you played the
- 50:20Speaker 3: schedule that they're playing right now last year, with what
- 50:23Speaker 3: they had, maybe they would have been lucky to win
- 50:25Speaker 3: five games. So now you've you're adding, well, they've added
- 50:29Speaker 3: to that what they had last year, so instead of five,
- 50:31Speaker 3: they win seven or eight. You know, that's you know,
- 50:35Speaker 3: like it's impossible to go just year to year. And
- 50:37Speaker 3: the other thing is what we were talking about with
- 50:40Speaker 3: the schedule at the very beginning. Detroit is on the
- 50:42Speaker 3: opener right because right now people were saying, huh, if
- 50:46Speaker 3: I had to make a pick for NFC North Champ,
- 50:48Speaker 3: I'd go with the Lions. I think I might do that.
- 50:51Speaker 3: I might feel that way too. Sure, I ain't gonna
- 50:54Speaker 3: be surprised if they're like six and eleven, No, no way.
- 50:58Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, it's a the schedule, never know, because I'm
- 51:04Speaker 5: and I know this is hard to believe because I've
- 51:06Speaker 5: been pretty negative at times about this team this offseason,
- 51:09Speaker 5: but I'm actually cautiously optimistic that they're going to be
- 51:12Speaker 5: better than people think. I just I like I think
- 51:15Speaker 5: that angle of it, and from a mindset standpoint, I
- 51:18Speaker 5: do think that that Bill still still thrives off of that,
- 51:22Speaker 5: Like I think he can use that, and I think
- 51:24Speaker 5: he can thrive off of that. And I keep going
- 51:26Speaker 5: back to the fact that they won eight games with
- 51:28Speaker 5: everything that we now know that was going on on offense,
- 51:31Speaker 5: and they still clawed their way to eight wins. So
- 51:34Speaker 5: with Bill O'Brien, it should be better if the schedule
- 51:38Speaker 5: was easier than I would predict a lot more wins
- 51:41Speaker 5: than I think some people would, like I'd say they
- 51:43Speaker 5: could win ten or eleven games, yeah, but the schedule
- 51:45Speaker 5: isn't so.
- 51:47Speaker 3: Yeah, Like I would, I would look at last year, right,
- 51:49Speaker 3: just specifically last year, I think that they probably would
- 51:52Speaker 3: have won the Raiders game if Bill O'Bryan was the
- 51:54Speaker 3: coordinator because I don't think they would have been behind
- 51:56Speaker 3: seventeen to three in the first place, right, you know,
- 51:58Speaker 3: to have to make the comeback that they did, you
- 52:01Speaker 3: know before ultimately losing the game. I think that's an
- 52:04Speaker 3: example of how it could be better. But it doesn't
- 52:06Speaker 3: work that way because you don't know what the Raiders
- 52:08Speaker 3: are this year, and you don't know what you know.
- 52:11Speaker 3: How that's all gonna unfold you. You were studiously looking
- 52:14Speaker 3: at your phone. Well, I wanted to bring up the
- 52:15Speaker 3: Mike Gardi tweet from a few days ago, which we
- 52:18Speaker 3: didn't talk about it. I just thought it was interesting.
- 52:20Speaker 3: Bill O'Brien's impact already being felt in Foxborough talked to
- 52:23Speaker 3: a source who said the receiving group, for whatever reasons,
- 52:25Speaker 3: last year coaching talent attitude. There were a lot of
- 52:28Speaker 3: bad plays on tape this year that won't be tolerated.
- 52:31Speaker 3: To do it right or you'll be standing next to
- 52:33Speaker 3: him watching. I just thought that was interesting for a
- 52:36Speaker 3: you differently understand if you no, I know, And that's
- 52:39Speaker 3: what I mean.
- 52:40Speaker 6: There are some things in like I mean, I think
- 52:42Speaker 6: the thing on tape which we talked about last year
- 52:44Speaker 6: during the show where it was just like, you know,
- 52:46Speaker 6: I mean, evn't talked the spacing being completely off, you know,
- 52:49Speaker 6: not knowing where you're going. I mean, all those things,
- 52:51Speaker 6: and you know we can talk about which guys were
- 52:53Speaker 6: you know, we're kind of the prime suspects.
- 52:55Speaker 3: With that stuff consistently. But I don't know, I just
- 52:57Speaker 3: it was less the content of it that interest did me, Paul,
- 53:00Speaker 3: and more just like this is the message we're getting
- 53:02Speaker 3: out right now that that stuff won't be tolerated this year,
- 53:06Speaker 3: you know, and which not imprising with Bill O'Brien, but
- 53:08Speaker 3: I just thought my thing is, I don't think it
- 53:10Speaker 3: was tolerated last year. I think that when we were
- 53:12Speaker 3: sitting here on various postgame shows wondering, where's Kendrick Bourne,
- 53:17Speaker 3: Where's you know, where's Devonte Parker this week? Why does
- 53:20Speaker 3: DeVante Parker have one hundred yards this week and then
- 53:22Speaker 3: the next three weeks combined he has thirty? Right, I
- 53:25Speaker 3: think they weren't tolerated last year. And unless you're telling
- 53:30Speaker 3: me that the biggest culprits of not doing what they
- 53:32Speaker 3: were supposed to do were Jacoby Myers and John Smith
- 53:35Speaker 3: and they've been replaced with guys that will do what
- 53:37Speaker 3: they're supposed to do. I don't really know how that works.
- 53:40Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I think last year the biggest thing, and
- 53:43Speaker 5: we talked a lot about the spacing and things like that.
- 53:46Speaker 5: I think the problem with that stuff was that it
- 53:48Speaker 5: just never seemed to get corrected because it never got
- 53:51Speaker 5: better on film, Like so if it was okay, we
- 53:54Speaker 5: had these issues in week six, but then by week
- 53:57Speaker 5: twelve we were better at it, then it's like, okay, well,
- 53:59Speaker 5: then proper corrections in the proper coaching points are being
- 54:03Speaker 5: put through the players, but it just never they never
- 54:06Speaker 5: got it down.
- 54:07Speaker 3: And I think the biggest thing is when you look
- 54:09Speaker 3: at offense, that's a good point and I will fix. Yeah.
- 54:13Speaker 5: I think offense is like this, especially when you tell
- 54:16Speaker 5: a player that you're running a five yard out. It
- 54:20Speaker 5: being a five yard out matters. It being a six
- 54:23Speaker 5: yard out is not what we have in the playbook.
- 54:25Speaker 5: The playbook says it needs to be a five yard out,
- 54:28Speaker 5: and that those types of things. I go back to
- 54:31Speaker 5: what Logan Ryan said the other day about about Bill
- 54:34Speaker 5: and that he had that ability to look around the
- 54:37Speaker 5: field and know what everybody you did wrong or right
- 54:40Speaker 5: on a play and correct.
- 54:42Speaker 3: Unles you're asking about it in the post game, Yeah.
- 54:44Speaker 5: Correct eight, ten, twelve guys maybe on one play on
- 54:47Speaker 5: both sides of the football, and those that type of
- 54:50Speaker 5: ability to see it live and in real time is
- 54:54Speaker 5: so valuable that I think a guy like Bill O'Brien
- 54:57Speaker 5: can do that because he coaches offense and he knows
- 55:00Speaker 5: offense inside and out. So when they're out on the
- 55:02Speaker 5: practice field and you know, someone runs a four step
- 55:07Speaker 5: slant instead of a three step slant, he's going to say, hey,
- 55:10Speaker 5: so this is supposed to be in three right, Like
- 55:12Speaker 5: you're supposed to break on three steps here, And the
- 55:14Speaker 5: reason is because when you didn't break in three steps, well,
- 55:17Speaker 5: now this guy's route is now hugging into your route,
- 55:20Speaker 5: which is now bringing this defender into your pathway. And
- 55:23Speaker 5: that's how those kind of domino effects happen. So I'm
- 55:25Speaker 5: hopeful that those little details are going to get cleaned up.
- 55:28Speaker 5: He's not going to make these players exceptionally more athletic
- 55:32Speaker 5: or faster, or it's more explosive, but if they can
- 55:36Speaker 5: be better at those little details like how many times
- 55:38Speaker 5: last year did it feel like it was third and
- 55:40Speaker 5: seven and then they ran a five yard pattern and
- 55:42Speaker 5: you're just like, that's what how do you use?
- 55:44Speaker 3: That's what I meant, like, I didn't really understand the
- 55:46Speaker 3: way the tweet was worded, because I agree with Evan
- 55:50Speaker 3: in this regard that Bill O'Brien will set up an
- 55:53Speaker 3: offense and he'll structure it in a manner that makes
- 55:57Speaker 3: much more sense. We've I've already seen it. It's not
- 55:59Speaker 3: like something and we have to sort of project. I
- 56:02Speaker 3: saw him here. I know he can set up an offense,
- 56:05Speaker 3: so and I didn't have that confidence with the guys
- 56:08Speaker 3: that were doing it last year, fairly or unfairly. I
- 56:11Speaker 3: didn't think Matt Patricier and Joe Judge were equipped to
- 56:13Speaker 3: do those sort of adjustments. But in terms of like
- 56:17Speaker 3: accountability and they they'd never fixed it. But I think
- 56:21Speaker 3: they never fixed the structure of the offense. They never
- 56:25Speaker 3: fixed the system itself. It wasn't because of guys doing
- 56:28Speaker 3: the same things over and over again and just continuing
- 56:31Speaker 3: to play. Otherwise we wouldn't have spent so much time
- 56:33Speaker 3: wondering where specifically Kendrick Bourne was. And my contention all
- 56:39Speaker 3: year was Kendrick Bourne doesn't play more because at least
- 56:42Speaker 3: once a game when he plays significant snaps, I noticed
- 56:45Speaker 3: him doing something blatantly wrong, whether it's lining up in
- 56:48Speaker 3: the wrong spot, moving when he shouldn't move, or knocking
- 56:52Speaker 3: John hus Smith over on across with people, you know,
- 56:56Speaker 3: I saw him do something wrong on a consistent basis.
- 57:01Speaker 3: He kept not playing right. Then he would go back
- 57:03Speaker 3: and play and make a mistake. Then he wouldn't play
- 57:06Speaker 3: and people would say where is he He's Jerry Rice,
- 57:09Speaker 3: you know, why why are we losing this you know,
- 57:11Speaker 3: dangerous weapon? To me, that was why he wasn't consistently playing. Yeah,
- 57:16Speaker 3: I just remember there was I can't remember. It was
- 57:18Speaker 3: late in the season.
- 57:18Speaker 5: I can't remember the exact game, but they ran a
- 57:22Speaker 5: route combination to the right side where one guy ran
- 57:25Speaker 5: an under and one guy ran and out and they
- 57:28Speaker 5: just ran right into each other. And I was like,
- 57:30Speaker 5: there's no way that when they put that play on
- 57:32Speaker 5: the whiteboard that that's the way that it looks. So
- 57:35Speaker 5: either somebody had the wrong play or the wrong route,
- 57:38Speaker 5: you know, in that sequence of play, or there there
- 57:42Speaker 5: had to have been some sort of a disconnect and
- 57:44Speaker 5: it wasn't when they put it out on the whiteboard.
- 57:46Speaker 5: They drew up a play where two guys were gonna
- 57:48Speaker 5: collide like that.
- 57:49Speaker 3: I would put Thornton in there too, Like there were
- 57:51Speaker 3: times where he's like coming across maybe in his zone,
- 57:55Speaker 3: and the throw was a little bit and it looks like, oh,
- 57:57Speaker 3: that's a terrible throw by back and surprise here. I
- 58:00Speaker 3: don't always think that was the case. I think that
- 58:02Speaker 3: there were times where he was expecting him to sit
- 58:04Speaker 3: in the zone or stop his route or you know,
- 58:07Speaker 3: he had that problem and he would just keep going.
- 58:09Speaker 3: He would drift and get himself in trouble, and it
- 58:11Speaker 3: just didn't it didn't look right. Yeah, there a lot
- 58:13Speaker 3: of stuff in between the hashes with th Whart, and
- 58:15Speaker 3: I thought last year it didn't look like that's the
- 58:17Speaker 3: way it's drawn up.
- 58:18Speaker 5: I wonder in like college, like, I don't know how
- 58:20Speaker 5: much sitting in zone versus running away and man is
- 58:24Speaker 5: like how much they are I'm.
- 58:25Speaker 3: Talking about that and you know me, like I'm throwing
- 58:27Speaker 3: terms out, like I don't know if that was well,
- 58:29Speaker 3: it just didn't look right now. No, you're one hundred
- 58:30Speaker 3: percent right.
- 58:31Speaker 5: I felt the same way, and I I that's the
- 58:33Speaker 5: old the old cliche is you sit in zone and
- 58:36Speaker 5: you run away from man, like that's that's the way
- 58:38Speaker 5: that it's done.
- 58:39Speaker 3: And and you're coming over the middle.
- 58:41Speaker 5: You gotta find those soft spots and you gotta you know,
- 58:44Speaker 5: know the distribution of the zones underneath and figure out, Okay,
- 58:48Speaker 5: this is where I can sit running a shallow crosser
- 58:51Speaker 5: across the middle of the field. When there's three zone
- 58:53Speaker 5: guys sitting right, you're just asking for your head to
- 58:55Speaker 5: get taken off.
- 58:56Speaker 3: But Mike, we can all agree that the setup of
- 58:59Speaker 3: the offense and the organization of the offense will be
- 59:02Speaker 3: much improved. I like that postivity from Paul. I love Billy.
- 59:06Speaker 3: Let's grab one of these calls here across the pond, Jordan,
- 59:09Speaker 3: thank you for holding on. How are you?
- 59:12Speaker 12: Yeah good?
- 59:12Speaker 3: Jens, how are you good good?
- 59:16Speaker 12: You just propped on the kind of the coaching side
- 59:18Speaker 12: of it. On offense, you think it's the owners of meetings.
- 59:21Speaker 12: Belichick said stuff about special teams about how he didn't
- 59:26Speaker 12: think coaching was the problem. You know, we were number
- 59:28Speaker 12: one in special teams two years ago, but so you know,
- 59:31Speaker 12: how can that be the problem last year for while
- 59:34Speaker 12: they were so bad?
- 59:35Speaker 13: Which doesn't make sense to me.
- 59:37Speaker 12: But in terms of look at me as if he's
- 59:39Speaker 12: blaming the players for last year's performance. He's changed kicker punk,
- 59:43Speaker 12: we signed a special teams guy and free agency as well.
- 59:46Speaker 12: But on offense, we've changed the coordinator and the players
- 59:51Speaker 12: are basically the same.
- 59:53Speaker 13: How do you guys see how.
- 59:55Speaker 12: Belichick thinks about the blame from last year players was
- 59:59Speaker 12: his coaching?
- 59:59Speaker 3: Yeah? Yeah, thank short.
- 1:00:00Speaker 6: And I don't know if you guys want to jump
- 1:00:02Speaker 6: on it, but I mean I mean, I do think
- 1:00:04Speaker 6: that he I mean, look, Patricia's gone, Joe Judge is
- 1:00:08Speaker 6: supposedly helping out with the special team. So I don't
- 1:00:10Speaker 6: think it's entirely just like we're just going to let
- 1:00:12Speaker 6: the coaching stay the same. I don't know how much
- 1:00:13Speaker 6: of an impact you know, that that actually has, but
- 1:00:16Speaker 6: you know, and I do think we were talking about
- 1:00:18Speaker 6: on the show on Tuesday that they've added a lot
- 1:00:21Speaker 6: of special teams tight players in the draft and in
- 1:00:24Speaker 6: free agency, so.
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: They've also retained a lot of them. Yeah, I mean,
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: so it's a big mush of you know, guys like
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: Slater and Cody Davis, but you know, also bringing in macmcmillan,
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: bringing back Chris then signing Chris Board, like Chris Board
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: really was the only free agent addition in that regard.
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: Everybody else was retained. And I do think that he
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: thinks that it was more players than coach on special teams.
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: I for sure, Cardona and now like it again, and
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: I've said this many times, just so I don't get
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: a blod back in my face. I do not count
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: specialists with special teams like Nick Folk and Jake Bailey
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: weren't responsible for allowing three touchdowns. Like I understand the
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: kickoff itself, and that was circumstantial because your kickoff guy
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: was unavailable, he wasn't on the field, he wasn't actively
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: on the field the last whatever many games, six eight games.
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: So someone's going to kick off into the end zone
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: this year. That's so that's different. I'm talking about the
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: guys actually covering, the guys running into the punter, the
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: guys you know, allowing you know, get they're all they're
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: all going to be largely the same guys that are
- 1:01:32Speaker 3: that are doing those roles. Hopefully a mere speed or
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: with Bolden's first night, Okay, hopefully some of these guys,
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: can you know, Marte Mapu, he pushes Mac Wilson off
- 1:01:50Speaker 3: the roster, That to me would be a positive development.
- 1:01:53Speaker 3: But we'll see. Yeah.
- 1:01:55Speaker 5: I do definitely agree with the caller though that they
- 1:01:58Speaker 5: they feel that Special Teams was personnel largely driven by
- 1:02:02Speaker 5: by personnel issues and not coaching. And I we've observed
- 1:02:06Speaker 5: Cam Accord and obviously I've talked to him. I think
- 1:02:07Speaker 5: he's a good coach, and I think with Special Teams
- 1:02:10Speaker 5: you really need to understand the nuances because it's a
- 1:02:14Speaker 5: very unique thing, like I gotta admit, like it's a
- 1:02:17Speaker 5: blind spot for me, Like I don't understand the difference
- 1:02:20Speaker 5: between L three and L four, Like I couldn't tell you,
- 1:02:22Speaker 5: but I could tell you the difference between this route
- 1:02:24Speaker 5: that route, and you know this coverage that coverage. It's
- 1:02:26Speaker 5: it's a it's its own world. And I do think
- 1:02:29Speaker 5: that cam Accord has the knowledge, and I think that
- 1:02:32Speaker 5: he's a good teacher because he teaches us, like we
- 1:02:35Speaker 5: asked questions because we're dumb, so we we literally ask
- 1:02:38Speaker 5: him questions and we're like, hey, like teach us, like
- 1:02:40Speaker 5: what is the difference between this and this? And he
- 1:02:42Speaker 5: he'll sit there and give great explanations to the media.
- 1:02:46Speaker 5: So I'm sure that he gives great explanations to the players.
- 1:02:48Speaker 5: I think last year, for some reason, that it carried
- 1:02:51Speaker 5: over from offense to other phases. To be honest with you,
- 1:02:53Speaker 5: that attention to detail just wasn't there.
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: I feel like Bill in general, and this is unfair
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: because I don't know for sure how he feels. I
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: think Bill in general thinks all problems are more personnel
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: related and execution related. It's not necessarily like we had
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: this bad game plan and we didn't have a good play,
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: like right, go out and execute the play and it'll work.
- 1:03:16Speaker 5: That's that's how he thinks for execution. Like I not
- 1:03:19Speaker 5: to go on a Celtics ramp, but Missoula loves to
- 1:03:22Speaker 5: say that, loves to say.
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: Except for when they have eighteen seconds left in the
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: game and it was great execution, except that they didn't
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: get a shot right, right.
- 1:03:29Speaker 5: Right, And you know he's sitting there saying, oh, yeah,
- 1:03:31Speaker 5: you know, the execution in that situation could have been better.
- 1:03:34Speaker 5: And it's like for the Celtics, I look at it
- 1:03:36Speaker 5: and I say, Okay, talent on the floor, you probably
- 1:03:39Speaker 5: have it, like you got to all NBA players, you
- 1:03:42Speaker 5: got Marcus Smart's one dude like you probably, But with
- 1:03:44Speaker 5: this team and it sometimes it is talent, Like sometimes
- 1:03:47Speaker 5: you got to look at it and realize that they're
- 1:03:49Speaker 5: not out executing the other team because the other team
- 1:03:51Speaker 5: has better players than you do. So I think a
- 1:03:53Speaker 5: lot of those players got changed out in some spots.
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: Yeah, it's just like what keeps popping out to me
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: is just you know, and it's these guys that I think,
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: you know, you're referring.
- 1:04:00Speaker 6: To the Raleigh Webbs of the world. You know these
- 1:04:03Speaker 6: Brendan schooler. We didn't even mention him as you know.
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: So it's like all those guys. I just it's gonna
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: be interesting how this all plays out here in camp
- 1:04:11Speaker 3: and then maybe we'll get a glimpse and in a
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: couple of weeks of what the special and that's what Like,
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: I think that those kinds of guys now map who
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: obviously will be on the roster. Third round picks don't
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: get cut unless they do something wrong. But the seventh
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: round picks, they can. They earn jobs over you know,
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: four or five year veterans that have been largely just
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: playing on special teams. Yeah, I think that would be
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: a good sign if if they're thought of that. Well,
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: well I got some stuff for you guys after the break.
- 1:04:35Speaker 3: Plenty of great emails that we have yet to get to. Also,
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: I talked to his Abeolin's coach at Jackson State yesterday, Well,
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: a guy that replaced Dion. Great conversation. So I'll tell
- 1:04:45Speaker 3: you a little bit about that after the break. We're
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: gonna have some food we'll catch after this.

- 1:14:46Speaker 8: And yet I was still nice enough to invite you along.
- 1:14:48Speaker 4: Yes, very nice. There were like six of us. I
- 1:14:53Speaker 4: mean the place was, say, Fred was the you know
- 1:14:55Speaker 4: what block? Why are you mad at me?
- 1:14:57Speaker 8: Why why, he says, with the big grin across his face.
- 1:15:00Speaker 4: Why are you so upset?
- 1:15:01Speaker 3: What I'm upset at you?
- 1:15:03Speaker 10: Why?
- 1:15:04Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 1:15:04Speaker 5: Just you?
- 1:15:05Speaker 4: All of our lives are open book.
- 1:15:06Speaker 8: Why is it you are? Why you purposely do these things? Yes?
- 1:15:11Speaker 4: I do, yes, yes, I do talk. We all talk
- 1:15:14Speaker 4: about things going on.
- 1:15:16Speaker 8: You make things out of thin air that are not there.
- 1:15:18Speaker 4: What's thin air? You were with a lady friend? What's
- 1:15:20Speaker 4: what's thin air about that?
- 1:15:22Speaker 8: No, a lady friend implies that there's something going on,
- 1:15:25Speaker 8: and she wrote.
- 1:15:26Speaker 3: That's the end of it, dude, look like but it
- 1:15:28Speaker 3: doesn't have to be it.
- 1:15:29Speaker 8: It is because I told you yesterday, and I don't
- 1:15:32Speaker 8: like it when you make me repeat myself. It sounds
- 1:15:35Speaker 8: like my father.
- 1:15:37Speaker 4: You think I'm screwing things up for you.
- 1:15:38Speaker 8: Just tell me you've been screwing things up for me
- 1:15:41Speaker 8: for twelve years. Buddy. Did you specifically tell him not
- 1:15:44Speaker 8: to mention it?
- 1:15:44Speaker 7: No?
- 1:15:45Speaker 8: I knew he was going as soon as he walked
- 1:15:46Speaker 8: up and saw us. He had that stupid grin that
- 1:15:48Speaker 8: he's got on his face right now.
- 1:15:50Speaker 3: I can so see it.
- 1:15:52Speaker 4: I won't mention it again, But if when something happens,
- 1:15:55Speaker 4: could you let us know nothing is going to happen,
- 1:15:59Speaker 4: you know, like if they you know, if they decide to.
- 1:16:01Speaker 3: Nothing is going to happen.
- 1:16:07Speaker 8: I'm gonna go with And why are you yelling at me?
- 1:16:09Speaker 8: I didn't do anything because you're joking around to him
- 1:16:12Speaker 8: on a little Yes.
- 1:16:13Speaker 3: You did admit it, but this is all Fred.
- 1:16:15Speaker 4: I don't Okay, what'd you guys eat?
- 1:16:17Speaker 3: Did I miss that point?
- 1:16:19Speaker 4: I had swordfish? That's another great moment from.
- 1:16:24Speaker 3: Swordfish. Used to get swordfish during the show? Not here?
- 1:16:29Speaker 3: What were you guys? Was that a draft show or something?
- 1:16:30Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:16:31Speaker 15: No classic where Fred saw Eric on a date and
- 1:16:35Speaker 15: crashed it.
- 1:16:36Speaker 3: Oh that's great.
- 1:16:37Speaker 6: And now it ties into this email that I was
- 1:16:39Speaker 6: sitting on that I from Jake from Chicago that I
- 1:16:41Speaker 6: wanted to to read, and I think Paul might have
- 1:16:44Speaker 6: to be the one to provide this insight. But hey, guys,
- 1:16:46Speaker 6: new listener, I always hear the references to Eric. Never
- 1:16:50Speaker 6: listened when he was on the show. Is there a
- 1:16:52Speaker 6: specific show that is must listen to to truly understand
- 1:16:55Speaker 6: the references you all make to him. I feel like
- 1:16:57Speaker 6: I need even just a clip to truly appreciate what
- 1:16:59Speaker 6: he brought or took away from the show, and he
- 1:17:01Speaker 6: would love the show and the entertaining perspective you all bring.
- 1:17:03Speaker 6: I mean, I think that clip was pretty good, Paul,
- 1:17:05Speaker 6: but if there were some other Eric moments. But but
- 1:17:09Speaker 6: I mean every Joiners paint the picture.
- 1:17:11Speaker 3: Yeah, Eric, I mean obviously worked here for a long time.
- 1:17:14Speaker 3: I would say Andy and I were much more into
- 1:17:18Speaker 3: the Patriots in football in general, especially football because Eric
- 1:17:22Speaker 3: was into the Patriots, but not like as passionately as
- 1:17:26Speaker 3: we were in terms of the league itself. So that
- 1:17:29Speaker 3: was for starters. He kind of carried himself as being
- 1:17:34Speaker 3: above the fray intellectual. Yeah, I was trying to be nice.
- 1:17:40Speaker 3: He in doing so, I think he opened himself up
- 1:17:43Speaker 3: to a lot of those kinds of stories. Well, it's
- 1:17:46Speaker 3: funny it says criticisms. I was talking to Evan about
- 1:17:48Speaker 3: it too. It's like you kind of become a character
- 1:17:50Speaker 3: on the show. And Eric certainly was a character, but
- 1:17:52Speaker 3: he was also you know, a great guy and you
- 1:17:54Speaker 3: know all the things you pick on him for, but
- 1:17:56Speaker 3: he was He was the only favorite of the show
- 1:17:58Speaker 3: that is really completely authentic is as soon as the
- 1:18:03Speaker 3: show was over, Evan does actually just watch video just watches,
- 1:18:06Speaker 3: take watches all twenty two all the time, and if
- 1:18:10Speaker 3: he's not doing that, he's at a Bruins or Celtics
- 1:18:12Speaker 3: playoff his dog.
- 1:18:15Speaker 5: But the first, my first interaction with Eric back in
- 1:18:19Speaker 5: eighteen when I first started UH, he was standing with
- 1:18:22Speaker 5: Aaron Sulkin from PR, and so I thought he was
- 1:18:25Speaker 5: in PR.
- 1:18:26Speaker 3: I didn't know who he was, so I went up
- 1:18:28Speaker 3: to him. That's the perfect thing that would piss him,
- 1:18:30Speaker 3: all right.
- 1:18:31Speaker 5: So I went up to him and I asked him
- 1:18:33Speaker 5: if he had a roster. No, you did it, and
- 1:18:36Speaker 5: he mocked you, and he looked at me like he
- 1:18:40Speaker 5: wanted to punch me in the face.
- 1:18:44Speaker 3: I can totally see. This is the first I've ever
- 1:18:47Speaker 3: heard of the story what happened? And he was like
- 1:18:50Speaker 3: it is Scully cap On and ask me or like
- 1:18:53Speaker 3: something like that. And I was just like, oh, sorry,
- 1:18:55Speaker 3: Like I thought you were standing with whereas Andy or
- 1:19:00Speaker 3: Mike or myself, Like, yeah, I mean you have a
- 1:19:04Speaker 3: roster for for Forevan.
- 1:19:06Speaker 7: No.
- 1:19:07Speaker 3: He looked at me like, I why would you assume
- 1:19:10Speaker 3: I'm not in PR? I write long form features?
- 1:19:14Speaker 5: Yeah, and then so I remember I I walked away
- 1:19:17Speaker 5: from him, and I recognize because I realized I asked
- 1:19:19Speaker 5: the wrong person, so I walked away from him staring
- 1:19:22Speaker 5: at you. I asked somebody, Uh, hey, you know who's
- 1:19:25Speaker 5: that Who's that guy over there? I've never met him before.
- 1:19:28Speaker 5: They were like, oh, that's Eric Scalvino, like he writes
- 1:19:31Speaker 5: for Patriots dot Com.
- 1:19:32Speaker 3: And I was like, uh, like, pr my, apologize, mister Skelvino.
- 1:19:40Speaker 3: I just I just wanted to apologize for earlier. Idealy
- 1:19:42Speaker 3: who you were? You there?
- 1:19:45Speaker 18: It is?
- 1:19:46Speaker 3: Yeah, let's uh, let's go back to the phones here
- 1:19:48Speaker 3: real quick before we dive into the email. Sean and Vancouver.
- 1:19:50Speaker 3: Hey Sean, how are you?
- 1:19:52Speaker 12: Hey?
- 1:19:53Speaker 14: Guys, Mike, have a couple of things now, Paul. Earlier
- 1:19:57Speaker 14: you were talking about running back and how they might
- 1:20:02Speaker 14: not get on as much as a rookie because of
- 1:20:04Speaker 14: the responsibilities in the passing game, blocking schemes. I wonder
- 1:20:08Speaker 14: if that extends to tackle. Now what we've mentioned that
- 1:20:12Speaker 14: they didn't draft a tackle because they're happy with who
- 1:20:15Speaker 14: they have in the room, And I wonder if it's
- 1:20:18Speaker 14: also extends to the experience, like Rillery been in the
- 1:20:22Speaker 14: league for a long time, maybe he's going to be
- 1:20:24Speaker 14: better at picking up those type of things. When it
- 1:20:27Speaker 14: comes to protecting on passing plays. I don't know if
- 1:20:32Speaker 14: that's their thinking, but that might be one thing.
- 1:20:34Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:20:35Speaker 3: I think in general Bill doesn't love giving really big
- 1:20:39Speaker 3: roles to rookies. I think he's been sort of reluctant
- 1:20:42Speaker 3: to do that periodically over a long period of time.
- 1:20:47Speaker 3: But I would say with tackle, yeah, I think ideally
- 1:20:50Speaker 3: you draft a tackle in the first round and he's
- 1:20:53Speaker 3: your third tackle. Yeah, but I don't think that's why
- 1:20:56Speaker 3: they didn't take a tackle because he's not going to
- 1:20:58Speaker 3: play anyway, because now you're just have the same problem
- 1:21:01Speaker 3: next year. Yeah, if you don't want to play a
- 1:21:03Speaker 3: young tackle.
- 1:21:04Speaker 5: I do feel like tackle two to some degree, it's
- 1:21:07Speaker 5: just like you kind of blocked the guy across from you.
- 1:21:10Speaker 3: Yeah, that's offensive line play. Yeah.
- 1:21:11Speaker 5: I mean there's obviously slide, no disrespect to my son.
- 1:21:14Speaker 5: If they put two guys over you, you got to
- 1:21:16Speaker 5: you know, sort that out and things like that. But
- 1:21:19Speaker 5: for the most part, I think, you know, eighty percent
- 1:21:22Speaker 5: of the time, it's just like, if you're a left tackle,
- 1:21:25Speaker 5: the guys lining up over you, Matthew Judon's across from you,
- 1:21:28Speaker 5: you're blocking Matthew Judon, you.
- 1:21:30Speaker 3: Know, Yeah, and I do think, Sean, I do think
- 1:21:32Speaker 3: that Bill probably looks at that and says, that's that's
- 1:21:34Speaker 3: asking a lot of a young rookie tackle to step
- 1:21:37Speaker 3: in week one and just perform. But he's done that.
- 1:21:40Speaker 3: Matt Light Matt like, I was just gonna bring him
- 1:21:41Speaker 3: right out of the right out of the shoot in
- 1:21:43Speaker 3: two thousand and one as a second round rookie and
- 1:21:46Speaker 3: obviously perform well. And Soldier ended up having to play.
- 1:21:50Speaker 3: I think the idea going into that year was for
- 1:21:53Speaker 3: him to sit and be the third tackle, but then
- 1:21:55Speaker 3: Volmer got hurt and he had to start really the
- 1:21:58Speaker 3: bulk of the season. I just feel like, in general,
- 1:22:03Speaker 3: Bill would rather not have to rely on rookies. I
- 1:22:07Speaker 3: think he's a big experience guy.
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:22:10Speaker 9: That.
- 1:22:10Speaker 14: My other thing has to do with the draft. It's
- 1:22:15Speaker 14: a weird kind of observation, but there were basically seventeen
- 1:22:20Speaker 14: players invited to the draft party, and we saw, you know,
- 1:22:23Speaker 14: for nine players seventeen.
- 1:22:25Speaker 3: Can I just interrupt you for one second, Sean, because
- 1:22:28Speaker 3: a lot of people have said that there was seventeen
- 1:22:31Speaker 3: people that went to the draft party.
- 1:22:34Speaker 14: Right, more invited?
- 1:22:36Speaker 17: Right?
- 1:22:36Speaker 3: There was countless more invited. There was seventeen that said yes,
- 1:22:41Speaker 3: I don't want to make it out to be. In
- 1:22:42Speaker 3: other words, that Keon White, who I just had a
- 1:22:46Speaker 3: really good conversation with his coach, was one of the
- 1:22:48Speaker 3: seventeen people that they chose to go. No, there was
- 1:22:51Speaker 3: like a lot of people and most people said no,
- 1:22:55Speaker 3: they didn't want to go get to that.
- 1:22:58Speaker 14: So there was the first nine that showed up. They
- 1:23:00Speaker 14: all hugged Goodell, right, and then you had a few
- 1:23:03Speaker 14: you know who didn't show up, And then you had
- 1:23:06Speaker 14: when it came to seventeen, you had Gonzales come up
- 1:23:09Speaker 14: and there.
- 1:23:10Speaker 3: Was no hug.
- 1:23:11Speaker 14: It was just a handshake, and then good couple after
- 1:23:13Speaker 14: that they were hugged again. So is there is there
- 1:23:16Speaker 14: something going on with that? Like the Patriots don't get
- 1:23:19Speaker 14: along with Goodell obviously, but this Patriots famous.
- 1:23:25Speaker 3: No, No, I don't think they called like we just
- 1:23:28Speaker 3: drafted you and you better on hug Goodell.
- 1:23:30Speaker 9: No.
- 1:23:30Speaker 5: I don't think Christian Gonzalez from the five minutes that
- 1:23:32Speaker 5: we got to sit with them, doesn't seem like a
- 1:23:34Speaker 5: hugger to me.
- 1:23:35Speaker 3: No, it doesn't seem I wouldn't read anything into it
- 1:23:38Speaker 3: at all. But I can tell you that the Patriots.
- 1:23:40Speaker 3: Both Bill Belichick and Robert Kraft have a very strong
- 1:23:44Speaker 3: relationship with Roger Goodell. I know that probably upsets some
- 1:23:49Speaker 3: element of Patriots fans, but it's it's it's true. It's
- 1:23:53Speaker 3: they get along very very well. Thanks Sean.
- 1:23:56Speaker 14: Okay, all right, that's.
- 1:23:57Speaker 3: All you got.
- 1:23:57Speaker 5: All right, that's those are some good details, though I
- 1:24:00Speaker 5: would not I do not watch who see who hugs
- 1:24:02Speaker 5: it and shakes and who lifts him off the ground.
- 1:24:05Speaker 10: I know that.
- 1:24:06Speaker 3: And you know, Mike, you had said before we went
- 1:24:08Speaker 3: to that break that you had talked to Zay Bolden
- 1:24:12Speaker 3: coach Taylor. Coach t C. Taylor, who I do remember, Yeah,
- 1:24:15Speaker 3: was here as a undrafted rookie one hundred years ago
- 1:24:19Speaker 3: and two thousand and two you said you had a
- 1:24:21Speaker 3: good conversation with Yeah, it was fun.
- 1:24:22Speaker 6: Just uh, I mean, obviously Deon Sanders had moved on,
- 1:24:25Speaker 6: but you know, got a little bit of insight from them,
- 1:24:27Speaker 6: just on on Zay and the kind of kid he was.
- 1:24:29Speaker 6: And and you know that information about coach Taylor being
- 1:24:32Speaker 6: here in two thousand and two, just like you don't
- 1:24:34Speaker 6: realize it. And then the assistant ad said, you know, hey,
- 1:24:36Speaker 6: I don't know if you realize this, but but then
- 1:24:38Speaker 6: filled me in on that. So it was fun just
- 1:24:40Speaker 6: to I said, look, I know things have changed in
- 1:24:43Speaker 6: twenty years, but you know, just from your experience here
- 1:24:45Speaker 6: what kind of things you have to say to Zay and.
- 1:24:48Speaker 3: You know what to prepare him for, prepare himself for.
- 1:24:50Speaker 3: So it was it was good.
- 1:24:51Speaker 6: I mean, I just these these we all do these profiles,
- 1:24:55Speaker 6: and I really kind of enjoyed just getting to talk
- 1:24:57Speaker 6: to the coaches and just you know, of course they're
- 1:24:59Speaker 6: going to be for their player and it's all going
- 1:25:01Speaker 6: to be positive, but it's also just, you know, fun
- 1:25:03Speaker 6: to get to see these coaches who work with these
- 1:25:05Speaker 6: players and are now getting a chance to see these
- 1:25:07Speaker 6: players go on and you know, achieve their dreams of
- 1:25:09Speaker 6: at least being drafted. You don't know what where they're
- 1:25:11Speaker 6: going to end up, but it was cool and I
- 1:25:13Speaker 6: think we're wrapping them up. We all are just about
- 1:25:15Speaker 6: Don Evans went today on Jake Andrews.
- 1:25:17Speaker 3: So yeah, yeah, and I wrapped up keyon White today
- 1:25:20Speaker 3: and I had mentioned that I had talked to Brent Key,
- 1:25:22Speaker 3: who was the new head coach at Georgia Tech. He
- 1:25:27Speaker 3: took over on an interim basis early last season, went
- 1:25:31Speaker 3: four and four after a real tough start, and earned
- 1:25:34Speaker 3: the full time job, and obviously spoke very highly of
- 1:25:39Speaker 3: Keon White, as Mike said, most of these coaches do that.
- 1:25:43Speaker 3: But it was funny, like he had talked about, you know,
- 1:25:46Speaker 3: the same impressions that we got of that video clip
- 1:25:49Speaker 3: of how serious he was, and he said that he
- 1:25:54Speaker 3: was taken aback by it when he first came. When
- 1:25:57Speaker 3: in twenty one, when Keon White came from Old Dominion
- 1:26:02Speaker 3: and transferred to to Georgia Tech, he was taken it back.
- 1:26:06Speaker 3: And I was like, what's what's up with this guy?
- 1:26:07Speaker 3: What's his problem? He goes as he and a wolf
- 1:26:09Speaker 3: like he was thinking to himself, and he sort of
- 1:26:13Speaker 3: got to know him and and sort of understand what
- 1:26:16Speaker 3: makes him ticket He's like that all the time. It's
- 1:26:17Speaker 3: it's authentic. That's that's who he is. He's very serious,
- 1:26:21Speaker 3: very mature. He said. He's he's older as it is,
- 1:26:25Speaker 3: you know, for but he's like more mature beyond that
- 1:26:29Speaker 3: even his advanced age. So this is kind of the
- 1:26:34Speaker 3: seriousness that you get. But he said, don't mistake that
- 1:26:36Speaker 3: for you know, like a lack of passion, caring. Yeah, like,
- 1:26:41Speaker 3: he is very passionate about what he does. He was
- 1:26:44Speaker 3: great at sort of holding the locker room accountable really,
- 1:26:48Speaker 3: you know, on defense, especially last year, he would set
- 1:26:51Speaker 3: up one of the things that he told me, he
- 1:26:53Speaker 3: would set up these contests. They would have two out
- 1:26:56Speaker 3: of three matches short yardage on Tuesdays at practice, and
- 1:27:00Speaker 3: when the defense lost, it wasn't just we lost today, No,
- 1:27:04Speaker 3: he made sure that they were accountable. So he felt
- 1:27:07Speaker 3: like that was really good for him. This is Key
- 1:27:11Speaker 3: talking now. It was good for me because I'm trying
- 1:27:14Speaker 3: to like earn the respect of this locker room, and
- 1:27:16Speaker 3: I had this guy really doing everything he could to
- 1:27:19Speaker 3: make sure that everybody was doing whatever they could to win,
- 1:27:22Speaker 3: and that helped me win over the locker room myself.
- 1:27:25Speaker 3: So I think there was a lot of respect there.
- 1:27:26Speaker 3: I like hearing that.
- 1:27:27Speaker 6: I mean, based on some of the stuff we've been
- 1:27:29Speaker 6: talking about of just you know, generally the everybody who
- 1:27:31Speaker 6: should be right like those things.
- 1:27:35Speaker 3: The way, I'll just tell you guys that Key was
- 1:27:38Speaker 3: the offensive line coach at Alabama from sixteen to eighteen ish,
- 1:27:42Speaker 3: so he was heavily involved with recruiting Mac Jones and
- 1:27:46Speaker 3: obviously went against Christian Barmore in practice and said, I
- 1:27:50Speaker 3: don't know how you deal with those two Barmore and White,
- 1:27:53Speaker 3: you know, down the road someday if they were, you know,
- 1:27:56Speaker 3: hanging out over the A gap as sub rushers in
- 1:27:59Speaker 3: sub packages. Uh as the three technique inside, that's the idea.
- 1:28:02Speaker 3: Let's go, let's go. You got Jude on on the outside.
- 1:28:06Speaker 3: On the other side, it's a good front chasing down
- 1:28:10Speaker 3: mobile quarterbacks. I'd like to let you know about Kayshawn Booty,
- 1:28:13Speaker 3: but I'm striking out like I'm having a real hard
- 1:28:15Speaker 3: time apparently. Yeah, I'm like, I'm not really I mean,
- 1:28:19Speaker 3: I'll do respect to Kevin Funck, who I love, love love,
- 1:28:23Speaker 3: I'm not really interested in that kind of element I do. Look,
- 1:28:28Speaker 3: I love the UH.
- 1:28:29Speaker 5: I love doing these draft profiles though, because it's just
- 1:28:32Speaker 5: great to hear what the kid is like in the
- 1:28:35Speaker 5: story and and how these guys all got to this point.
- 1:28:39Speaker 5: And especially nowadays with with N I L and all
- 1:28:42Speaker 5: the transfers that we've had to deal with, and you know,
- 1:28:44Speaker 5: go tracking down coaches that actually coach these guys and
- 1:28:47Speaker 5: and got to know these guys a little bit. It's
- 1:28:50Speaker 5: it's always good to get some of that that background.
- 1:28:53Speaker 5: This is what obviously scouting departments do this before the draft,
- 1:28:56Speaker 5: and we do you know, we do it after the draft.
- 1:28:58Speaker 5: But it's always fascinating when you hear stories like Paul's
- 1:29:01Speaker 5: story about Kean White holding everybody accountable at practice. Don't
- 1:29:06Speaker 5: you hear these little things about these guys at the
- 1:29:08Speaker 5: Patriots drafted and you're like kind of Patriots Like, yeah,
- 1:29:12Speaker 5: now I get it.
- 1:29:13Speaker 6: The maturity thing too that Paul said, because that was
- 1:29:15Speaker 6: the same thing they said about about the kicker Ryland, Like,
- 1:29:18Speaker 6: you know, like I mentioned it before it came out
- 1:29:20Speaker 6: of the womb, mature.
- 1:29:21Speaker 3: You know, these guys are serious guys, they're into football.
- 1:29:24Speaker 17: Yeah.
- 1:29:24Speaker 3: I had Actually, it's unfortunate I had an interview scheduled
- 1:29:28Speaker 3: for after the show today with Mike Loxley, who is
- 1:29:32Speaker 3: Maryland's head coach, and about Chad Ryland, who I already
- 1:29:35Speaker 3: wrote the profile on anyway at this point, but he
- 1:29:38Speaker 3: unfortunately had to cancel that. So, yeah, uh, you want
- 1:29:42Speaker 3: to play a game? Got a little game here?
- 1:29:44Speaker 8: A game?
- 1:29:44Speaker 3: Would you like to play a game? He would do it? Well, yeah,
- 1:29:48Speaker 3: there you go. Toe.
- 1:29:50Speaker 6: So Aaron from Kentucky's got a game over unders Bailly's
- 1:29:53Speaker 6: Zappi starts a Hey.
- 1:29:57Speaker 3: I'm gonna say over. I think in the NFL that nowadays,
- 1:30:00Speaker 3: somebody gets hurt, somebody gets hurt, ball out somebody specific.
- 1:30:03Speaker 3: I'm gonna say last year, how many teams had their
- 1:30:06Speaker 3: quarterback playoffs the game? Crazy like Josh Allen, Yeah, yeah,
- 1:30:09Speaker 3: that's it, Mahomes. I'm gonna sander though Max got it
- 1:30:12Speaker 3: this year.
- 1:30:13Speaker 6: Uh like the twenty twenty three draft picks that don't
- 1:30:16Speaker 6: make the roster two, I guess we say two point five?
- 1:30:20Speaker 3: How about two point five over under two ND, I'm
- 1:30:22Speaker 3: going over. I'll say over.
- 1:30:24Speaker 5: Just they drafted five guys in the last two rounds
- 1:30:26Speaker 5: of the draft, like twelve guys altogether.
- 1:30:29Speaker 3: Yeah, taekwon Thornton touchdowns. Four that better be over.
- 1:30:36Speaker 5: I'm gonna I think that's a good prediction. I would
- 1:30:39Speaker 5: say four on the on the on the money, I'm
- 1:30:42Speaker 5: gonna cheat.
- 1:30:42Speaker 3: Gouda have some long ones. Uh tight end TDS ten
- 1:30:46Speaker 3: between Sicki and Hunter Henry. I like that number. I'm
- 1:30:49Speaker 3: gonna go. I'm gonna go over. I've been predicting a
- 1:30:52Speaker 3: resurgent for Hunter Henry this year, and I think Siki
- 1:30:54Speaker 3: will I'll stay over because I think that's a pretty
- 1:30:57Speaker 3: modest number for Yeah, tight ends catch the ball to day. Yeah,
- 1:31:02Speaker 3: Zapi tds were staying on the Zappie front here, Zappi
- 1:31:05Speaker 3: TD's three. So he gets Special Teams TDS too. With
- 1:31:12Speaker 3: Marcus Jones and Mario Douglas. Maybe I'll go under the
- 1:31:16Speaker 3: undern go over. I'm gonna go over to. I think
- 1:31:18Speaker 3: special teams be much better. Yeah, because they got new players.
- 1:31:23Speaker 3: Paul gives nod before the Pats before the fourth twice.
- 1:31:28Speaker 3: I don't have you given a Patriots nod in the
- 1:31:30Speaker 3: last two seasons Detroit. I gave without question. That game
- 1:31:35Speaker 3: was over on on like the second fourth down stop, right,
- 1:31:39Speaker 3: and they had like four more fourth down stops just
- 1:31:42Speaker 3: that well they you know, Board got interviewed and they
- 1:31:45Speaker 3: were like, what do you do anything you remember from
- 1:31:47Speaker 3: that game? And he was like, nah, but I was
- 1:31:49Speaker 3: hoping it would be like we kept going for fourth down.
- 1:31:51Speaker 3: I'm like, you know, I am you got the best
- 1:31:52Speaker 3: special teams player in the league, Like, come on, get
- 1:31:54Speaker 3: me out there. Probably, if he didn't get signed by
- 1:31:57Speaker 3: the Patriots, probably said, yeah, none of our players played.
- 1:31:59Speaker 5: What's so weird about that game? Just like mini sidebar here.
- 1:32:03Speaker 5: What's so weird about that game is that you would
- 1:32:06Speaker 5: expect that that would mean that the Lions are an
- 1:32:09Speaker 5: acolytically driven right, because you're going for it on fourth down,
- 1:32:12Speaker 5: But then they took a running back and an inside
- 1:32:13Speaker 5: linebacker in the first round.
- 1:32:15Speaker 3: So it's like, are you are?
- 1:32:16Speaker 5: You can decide, right, and you can tell that Dan
- 1:32:20Speaker 5: Campbell and their brain trust and Ben Johnson, their offensive coordinator,
- 1:32:25Speaker 5: have to be constantly at odds because Dan Campbell's.
- 1:32:28Speaker 3: I'm feeling this one. I'm feeling it. I'm feeling it.
- 1:32:31Speaker 3: We're gonna tear our kneecaps whatever, right, Yeah, no, I'm
- 1:32:35Speaker 3: feeling it. Yard. We gotta feel we got to run
- 1:32:39Speaker 3: the ball.
- 1:32:40Speaker 5: We gotta get a guy that can stop the run,
- 1:32:41Speaker 5: and we got to control the you know, the linebacker.
- 1:32:44Speaker 3: And get Brian Urlacker. In twenty thirteen, they like, they
- 1:32:50Speaker 3: had a really good offense last year and they had
- 1:32:52Speaker 3: two running backs and Swift and Williams that were very productive.
- 1:32:56Speaker 3: Williams is like like right, like sixty a million touchdowns,
- 1:33:00Speaker 3: but they were, but they were very productive, and they said,
- 1:33:03Speaker 3: we'll get rid of those two guys and we'll get
- 1:33:05Speaker 3: David Montgomery and then we'll draft Gibbs like of just
- 1:33:09Speaker 3: shuffling the deck the chairs on the screen. Be a
- 1:33:12Speaker 3: nerd or don't be a nerd? Dan Campbell, make up
- 1:33:14Speaker 3: your mind? Uh last one? How many weeks does Mike
- 1:33:18Speaker 3: drop an expletive out of frustration for the team three under?
- 1:33:24Speaker 8: But you will?
- 1:33:24Speaker 3: It would definitely be more than one. I appreciate it.
- 1:33:28Speaker 20: I haven't.
- 1:33:28Speaker 3: I haven't dropped one yet here. We should get a
- 1:33:31Speaker 3: deuced cam for the the road games when we're sitting
- 1:33:34Speaker 3: in here, that will be. That would be, but we can't.
- 1:33:37Speaker 3: You gotta see, like there there are different things like
- 1:33:40Speaker 3: beyond just the Patriots ineptitude offensively that like set him
- 1:33:45Speaker 3: off last.
- 1:33:46Speaker 5: Year mac reactions when Mac is yelling at the sideline,
- 1:33:52Speaker 5: I'm sure.
- 1:33:53Speaker 3: And then someone will be in here which will really
- 1:33:55Speaker 3: get under his skin at that time, and he's like
- 1:33:58Speaker 3: trying to kind you know, and I'm like, you know,
- 1:34:01Speaker 3: as as I like to say, semi retired so I
- 1:34:03Speaker 3: don't do any writing during the game anymore. And Mike
- 1:34:05Speaker 3: is like feverishly and I've been there, I've done it,
- 1:34:07Speaker 3: I did it for a hundred years, and feverishly trying
- 1:34:10Speaker 3: to get this done so when the start of the
- 1:34:11Speaker 3: show comes, you can be focused and have your un
- 1:34:14Speaker 3: divided and it'll be like some random like Mike, would
- 1:34:18Speaker 3: you think of that. I'm just very good.
- 1:34:22Speaker 5: I'm very glad that we have the setup that we
- 1:34:24Speaker 5: do because Mike doing like the immediate after the game,
- 1:34:28Speaker 5: but I can't.
- 1:34:29Speaker 3: It's it's a it's tough for me to do.
- 1:34:32Speaker 5: Like it's tough for me to focus on the game
- 1:34:33Speaker 5: the way I want to focus on the game and
- 1:34:36Speaker 5: chart it and do all the things that I do
- 1:34:38Speaker 5: live and then also be writing like a gamer that's
- 1:34:40Speaker 5: supposed to publish right when the clockheads zero in the
- 1:34:43Speaker 5: fourth course that I'm very glad that we have the
- 1:34:45Speaker 5: setup we do.
- 1:34:46Speaker 3: Because we've got some time and like I actually start
- 1:34:50Speaker 3: the style that Mike does. I started doing when we
- 1:34:54Speaker 3: first went digital. Yeah, we first went away from the
- 1:34:59Speaker 3: paper and we started doing postgame shows. I just thought, like,
- 1:35:02Speaker 3: you know, sort of quick hit random observations. I used
- 1:35:05Speaker 3: to call them random thoughts, and it turned into like
- 1:35:08Speaker 3: game observations. What is it called game observations? But what
- 1:35:12Speaker 3: used to happen to me all the time is the
- 1:35:15Speaker 3: things that you thought were relevant in the game. You know,
- 1:35:19Speaker 3: you'd start stacking up and then clearly there's a pattern developing,
- 1:35:24Speaker 3: and as you're writing them, you're writing them in such
- 1:35:26Speaker 3: a way that would indicate they won or they lost, right,
- 1:35:30Speaker 3: and then when that changes last minute, you're like the
- 1:35:33Speaker 3: whole tenor of this is now, Oh well, it's like
- 1:35:36Speaker 3: the Marcus Jones punt return, you know, I mean there
- 1:35:39Speaker 3: was like it was enhing game. There were two field
- 1:35:42Speaker 3: goals in it until that point, and then all of
- 1:35:44Speaker 3: a sudden You've got to like completely put the biggest
- 1:35:48Speaker 3: point in with like give three minutes before that. Right,
- 1:35:50Speaker 3: But at least that's something you do that like that
- 1:35:52Speaker 3: was changing. That's your top. Like I'm thinking more along
- 1:35:55Speaker 3: the lines of like Pages did a great job in
- 1:35:58Speaker 3: past protection and and you know, Dolphins came in, you know,
- 1:36:03Speaker 3: leading the league in sacks, the Patriots offensive line completely shut,
- 1:36:07Speaker 3: and all of a sudden there's like a strip sack
- 1:36:09Speaker 3: three minutes left from the game that cost the Patriots
- 1:36:12Speaker 3: of the game. Right, So now I have like six
- 1:36:14Speaker 3: points that I've made that are almost irrelevant at this point,
- 1:36:18Speaker 3: and like, what do you do?
- 1:36:19Speaker 5: That's why That's why I like doing the way that
- 1:36:22Speaker 5: we do because I can I get to, you know,
- 1:36:24Speaker 5: talk to the guys, fall into that trap and marinate
- 1:36:28Speaker 5: it on a little bit.
- 1:36:29Speaker 3: But I fell into that trap so many times too.
- 1:36:32Speaker 3: It's tough.
- 1:36:33Speaker 5: It's tough, but I there is a part of me that,
- 1:36:36Speaker 5: you know, I love traveling to the games, like, I
- 1:36:37Speaker 5: would not give that up.
- 1:36:38Speaker 3: I love doing it. But you guys have some fun
- 1:36:41Speaker 3: here too, you know, we do have a lot of
- 1:36:44Speaker 3: fun and we have a good like Hardy is really
- 1:36:47Speaker 3: good mixing with us, and Matt is here with us
- 1:36:51Speaker 3: on Sundays too. But yeah, I mean what I used
- 1:36:55Speaker 3: to like about the road games is I never really
- 1:36:58Speaker 3: worried about writing because at the time, we didn't post
- 1:37:01Speaker 3: right after a game. So I never really worried about
- 1:37:04Speaker 3: any writing because I knew I had the plane, Like
- 1:37:06Speaker 3: what else you're doing on the plane? Yeah, you know,
- 1:37:08Speaker 3: I'm gonna write on the way home, and you could
- 1:37:10Speaker 3: sort of collect your thoughts, formulate a plan, and then
- 1:37:14Speaker 3: execute it.
- 1:37:15Speaker 9: You know.
- 1:37:16Speaker 3: The home games were always different because you're always like,
- 1:37:18Speaker 3: I gotta get out of here, you know, I gotta
- 1:37:21Speaker 3: get out of here.
- 1:37:22Speaker 5: Yeah, well, inside baseball. But now I try to publish
- 1:37:26Speaker 5: before we're.
- 1:37:26Speaker 3: Wheels up many times I've been done wheels, so when
- 1:37:30Speaker 3: the meal comes, I don't I don't have to put
- 1:37:32Speaker 3: my laptop down.
- 1:37:33Speaker 5: I'm literally like in pocket, like ready to hit publish
- 1:37:37Speaker 5: and the plane is going like this, and I'm like
- 1:37:39Speaker 5: and yeah, yeah, and I'm just on my hot spot
- 1:37:43Speaker 5: on my phone and it's like trying to get like
- 1:37:46Speaker 5: make sure that it goes up. Every once in a
- 1:37:47Speaker 5: while I have to hit up for and be like, hey,
- 1:37:50Speaker 5: like it's written, but I just need somebody to to
- 1:37:52Speaker 5: fill in the the all the little boxes and stuff
- 1:37:56Speaker 5: like that. And but yeah, it's a it's a it's
- 1:37:58Speaker 5: a fun I would. I love going on the road.
- 1:38:01Speaker 5: I love being at the game.
- 1:38:02Speaker 3: You got to get this. You got to say these
- 1:38:03Speaker 3: things now because you can't say them at home. I know, Jess,
- 1:38:06Speaker 3: I have to try. It's my burden. I tell her
- 1:38:09Speaker 3: all the time. I can't.
- 1:38:11Speaker 5: It's really difficult for me to do the detail that
- 1:38:14Speaker 5: I want to get into without seeing the whole field
- 1:38:18Speaker 5: and like being there. So watching it on TV to
- 1:38:20Speaker 5: me is a little bit like having one hand tied
- 1:38:23Speaker 5: behind my back because I'm at the mercy of the
- 1:38:25Speaker 5: camera angles that they're giving me.
- 1:38:27Speaker 6: I just think of the contrast for me between the
- 1:38:30Speaker 6: away games when we watch it on TV and you're
- 1:38:32Speaker 6: you know, you're stuck with what they're showing you, you're
- 1:38:35Speaker 6: also getting the peanut gallery. Everybody that's in this room
- 1:38:38Speaker 6: is weighing in on their thoughts, so that's you know,
- 1:38:40Speaker 6: gonna call it. But and then when we're up in
- 1:38:42Speaker 6: the press box, I'm getting what you're saying.
- 1:38:45Speaker 3: You're seeing the whole field. You can watch what you want.
- 1:38:47Speaker 6: If I want to take my binoculars and just focus
- 1:38:49Speaker 6: on one guy for a play, I can do it.
- 1:38:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I I I hear exactly where you Yeah.
- 1:38:54Speaker 5: And then I always go down to the locker room afterwards,
- 1:38:56Speaker 5: and like usually off the record, I'll go up to
- 1:38:58Speaker 5: some players and be like, hey, like I think I
- 1:39:00Speaker 5: saw it this, Like is this my right? Am I
- 1:39:02Speaker 5: on the right, And they're like usually they like kind
- 1:39:05Speaker 5: of give me a wink, win, nod, nod, and they
- 1:39:07Speaker 5: don't actually like tell me like break it down for
- 1:39:09Speaker 5: me the way you know some might think.
- 1:39:11Speaker 3: But it's it's good. I got an email here from
- 1:39:14Speaker 3: Ryan in Atlanta. I liked with craft good story announcing
- 1:39:18Speaker 3: Week one with will be Brady's return. I feel it
- 1:39:20Speaker 3: appropriate to talk a little bit about some of Tom's
- 1:39:22Speaker 3: greatest moments. So what are your favorite moments plays from
- 1:39:25Speaker 3: Tom Brady's career that might not get as much coverage
- 1:39:28Speaker 3: as as many Super Bowl comebacks or nail biting AFC
- 1:39:30Speaker 3: championship games. For me, the regular season game against the
- 1:39:33Speaker 3: Saints in twenty thirteen when he hits Caemberrell Tompkins in
- 1:39:36Speaker 3: the end zone with five seconds left to win the
- 1:39:38Speaker 3: game was the moment that gets me, as Evan says,
- 1:39:41Speaker 3: hot and bothered when I watch it. Sorry for my
- 1:39:44Speaker 3: clunk reading there, Ryan Atlanta Hips like, good question. I
- 1:39:50Speaker 3: always done it for a Monday night game. Was that
- 1:39:53Speaker 3: last second touchdown to Givens. I want to say in
- 1:39:55Speaker 3: the game that Lonnie Packs did attentional safety? Ye yeah,
- 1:39:59Speaker 3: snapped the ball the goalpost. That was That was the three.
- 1:40:04Speaker 5: That was like one of those games where it was like, okay,
- 1:40:07Speaker 5: like Belichick is is doing stuff on a different level
- 1:40:11Speaker 5: and Brady is Brady. But like that was one of
- 1:40:13Speaker 5: those Patriot games where you're like, all right, they're playing
- 1:40:15Speaker 5: they are playing chess.
- 1:40:16Speaker 3: You don't know why they want that knows what's going
- 1:40:22Speaker 3: childhood for me right now? Let me remember it like
- 1:40:25Speaker 3: it was. It's it's always it's always interesting. They screwed
- 1:40:28Speaker 3: up on the return of the kick and got bottled
- 1:40:32Speaker 3: up deep in their own end. They mishandled the kick
- 1:40:35Speaker 3: on this. Yeah, Now, I think that the the intentional
- 1:40:38Speaker 3: safety to me, checkers see intent. The intentional safety to
- 1:40:42Speaker 3: me was football one on one. I think a lot
- 1:40:45Speaker 3: of guys would have done that. Now, most teams would
- 1:40:49Speaker 3: have lost even doing that. I think that was the
- 1:40:51Speaker 3: right thing to do. Most guys would have lost the
- 1:40:54Speaker 3: game because you you have a free kick. Let's say
- 1:40:59Speaker 3: you get the ball to the thirty yard line, first
- 1:41:01Speaker 3: down ends the game. And if you don't, you're punting
- 1:41:03Speaker 3: the ball and you're getting you're pinning them way down
- 1:41:06Speaker 3: and there's no time left. Right Everything after the intentional
- 1:41:11Speaker 3: safety was completely botched by Denver in that game. I
- 1:41:15Speaker 3: think it was Delta O'Neil if I want to remember,
- 1:41:18Speaker 3: I think he's I think he might have screwed up.
- 1:41:21Speaker 3: I might be confusing it with a different game, but whatever,
- 1:41:25Speaker 3: that drive by Brady to me is memorable. That throw
- 1:41:29Speaker 3: to it was like a twenty twenty five yard touchdown.
- 1:41:32Speaker 3: Wasn't like a little flip, you know, on a little
- 1:41:35Speaker 3: you know, in and out route, you know, jerk route.
- 1:41:37Speaker 3: It was like high degree of difficulty and at mile
- 1:41:43Speaker 3: high they never won their well whatever the Invesco field,
- 1:41:46Speaker 3: I think it was at the time, just an incredible
- 1:41:50Speaker 3: last couple of seconds.
- 1:41:51Speaker 5: I think my first memory that I that I always
- 1:41:55Speaker 5: stuck in my head was Troy Brown's game winner and
- 1:41:58Speaker 5: overtime against Miami.
- 1:42:00Speaker 3: Oh. That's a great one, that one when I when
- 1:42:02Speaker 3: he hit.
- 1:42:03Speaker 5: That throw, first of all, if you like, go watch
- 1:42:06Speaker 5: back and watch that, that is an absolute seed, like yeah,
- 1:42:10Speaker 5: and he's kind of like back pedaling when he throws
- 1:42:13Speaker 5: it to his momentum is not going forward. It's not
- 1:42:15Speaker 5: like a typical hair of Mary where the quarterback runs
- 1:42:18Speaker 5: into it or something like that. He's back pedaling and
- 1:42:21Speaker 5: moving to his left, and he still gets enough on it,
- 1:42:24Speaker 5: you know, to to hit Troy Brown in stride and
- 1:42:27Speaker 5: and then Troy Brown pulled away for the touchdown. And
- 1:42:29Speaker 5: I will never forget how excited because they never won
- 1:42:33Speaker 5: down in Miami right like there was they were on
- 1:42:34Speaker 5: like a crazy losing streak down there, and I just,
- 1:42:37Speaker 5: uh will never forget how excited even Bill was, you know,
- 1:42:41Speaker 5: throwing things, yeah, right, yeah, and that was that was
- 1:42:46Speaker 5: a big one. The other one that I always love
- 1:42:49Speaker 5: is the the snow game against Tennessee where him in
- 1:42:54Speaker 5: Moss and that they think they scored like fifty six
- 1:42:57Speaker 5: and a half or something like. Yeah, that game just
- 1:43:00Speaker 5: was like classic, like we're better than you and we're
- 1:43:03Speaker 5: just dirt stomping teams.
- 1:43:05Speaker 6: Now and that and that wasn't that was a rough
- 1:43:07Speaker 6: Patriots year too, Like that was just an outlier for
- 1:43:09Speaker 6: that that team in general. I just like, oh seven,
- 1:43:12Speaker 6: it's obvious, like no one's surprised, but just some of
- 1:43:15Speaker 6: those games it just felt unfair.
- 1:43:16Speaker 3: It just felt like these guys are on such another level.
- 1:43:19Speaker 6: And the one down in Miami to me where they
- 1:43:22Speaker 6: still play those highlights, just a couple of those Moss
- 1:43:24Speaker 6: touchdowns where the one guy like tore his acl like
- 1:43:27Speaker 6: on the play like Moss just like one hands it
- 1:43:30Speaker 6: on his shoulder and like two dolphin players just go
- 1:43:33Speaker 6: flying and one guy's got like a knee injury, and
- 1:43:35Speaker 6: its just like those.
- 1:43:36Speaker 3: Moments where you're like, this is just it's not fair.
- 1:43:38Speaker 3: Right now.
- 1:43:39Speaker 6: They are on a different level, even like Cincinnati that
- 1:43:41Speaker 6: year where you just felt like they were unstoppable.
- 1:43:44Speaker 3: It was pretty cool. I don't remember Cincinnati since he
- 1:43:47Speaker 3: I don't know the Miami game was was silly. Was
- 1:43:51Speaker 3: just throwing these balls like you talk about like you
- 1:43:53Speaker 3: develop bad habits. Threw one up like into triple coverage.
- 1:43:56Speaker 3: They had him completely surrounded. The must just like jumped
- 1:43:59Speaker 3: up the ball and everybody like just fell over. It
- 1:44:02Speaker 3: was like you know when you watch those clips on
- 1:44:04Speaker 3: on on like YouTube of like the kid that's like
- 1:44:07Speaker 3: eight years old and everybody playing youth football and they're
- 1:44:10Speaker 3: all just falling down around him. That's what it looked like. Yeah,
- 1:44:12Speaker 3: like they were playing their own game.
- 1:44:13Speaker 5: In a HIMNT Moss and and Gronker like the only
- 1:44:17Speaker 5: two guys that felt exactly like that, like like this
- 1:44:20Speaker 5: is varsity, Like we're on varsity. These are guys that
- 1:44:23Speaker 5: are playing JV. Like that's how I fell watching those guys.
- 1:44:26Speaker 5: But I just remember in O seven, like you knew
- 1:44:29Speaker 5: you could tell by Brady's like mannerisms when he was
- 1:44:31Speaker 5: loading up the gun to throw it deep to Moss
- 1:44:34Speaker 5: and you're watching it on TV, so you can't see
- 1:44:36Speaker 5: Moss down the field, but you're like Moss down there
- 1:44:39Speaker 5: somewhere and he's probably he's probably wide open.
- 1:44:41Speaker 6: That was the one game that I went to in
- 1:44:43Speaker 6: O seven, which was actually during the writer strike that's
- 1:44:46Speaker 6: going on again now out in LA Like, I'm like,
- 1:44:48Speaker 6: I gotta go back. I got to see this team.
- 1:44:50Speaker 6: But I went to the Pittsburgh game, which too, you
- 1:44:51Speaker 6: know famous plays. There was a big one to Moss,
- 1:44:53Speaker 6: but there was also the like the triple.
- 1:44:55Speaker 3: Pass for Radio Moss to Salwarz, and we were me
- 1:44:58Speaker 3: and my sisters were in the second last row of
- 1:45:00Speaker 3: this stadium, so we are like, so you had it
- 1:45:03Speaker 3: was more than the All twenty two. It was like
- 1:45:05Speaker 3: the All Lower Bowl. I mean, you had like all
- 1:45:07Speaker 3: thirty thousand down there, but you could see but you
- 1:45:09Speaker 3: could just see it develop. You're like, oh you could.
- 1:45:11Speaker 6: You could tell that Gaffney didn't slow down for a second,
- 1:45:14Speaker 6: you know, like it was just it was all right
- 1:45:16Speaker 6: there before you from from that high level.
- 1:45:18Speaker 3: So it was pretty cool that that game. So those
- 1:45:20Speaker 3: are a few, yeah, a few random. You know, it's
- 1:45:23Speaker 3: hard to really come up playoffs with ones that you
- 1:45:25Speaker 3: don't feel like are famous though, because like all the
- 1:45:27Speaker 3: games we brought up, I'm like, I remember every single
- 1:45:30Speaker 3: one of those. It's hard to be like one gem
- 1:45:33Speaker 3: that you didn't. It's such a product of their dominance
- 1:45:35Speaker 3: that you can, like I always joke about this, like
- 1:45:38Speaker 3: Patriots seemed to have more games that have names. Yeah,
- 1:45:42Speaker 3: you know, and like if it's not like a like
- 1:45:45Speaker 3: you could go in a couple of ways, that New
- 1:45:47Speaker 3: Orleans one that the email said, like that to me,
- 1:45:49Speaker 3: that's the Kemberrell Tompkins game, because it seemed like that
- 1:45:51Speaker 3: KEMBERL Tompkins ever did that was memorable in any way, right,
- 1:45:54Speaker 3: But you know a lot of people would say it's
- 1:45:58Speaker 3: the Unicorn and Chowponies game because that's when lost his mind.
- 1:46:01Speaker 3: I have to say that game.
- 1:46:02Speaker 5: I was gonna give Zoe credit, like I think that
- 1:46:04Speaker 5: he lost his mind. His call of that of that
- 1:46:07Speaker 5: game winning touchdown is why I think for a lot
- 1:46:10Speaker 5: of people of my generation that were a little bit
- 1:46:13Speaker 5: younger in the beginning part of the dynasty, that game
- 1:46:16Speaker 5: sticks out to all of us so much, and a
- 1:46:18Speaker 5: large part to Zoe's credit because of the call, Like
- 1:46:20Speaker 5: the call was money. And then obviously I think the
- 1:46:23Speaker 5: Red Sox won a World Series game like that same day,
- 1:46:25Speaker 5: like it was just a great Boston sports day.
- 1:46:31Speaker 3: It was grand against Detroit when they were like five
- 1:46:35Speaker 3: outs away, four outs away.
- 1:46:36Speaker 5: From Yeah, and that was just a great Boston sports day.
- 1:46:40Speaker 5: And I remember I was in college and my college
- 1:46:43Speaker 5: roommates nobody's from Boston and in my in my friend group,
- 1:46:46Speaker 5: and they just hated me that day. They were like,
- 1:46:49Speaker 5: this guy's got Brady, he's got our teas hitting grand
- 1:46:52Speaker 5: slams and like they're all just like, you know, wallowing.
- 1:46:55Speaker 3: I remember in my office writing after that game when
- 1:46:58Speaker 3: I had the Red Sox on and I was like,
- 1:47:02Speaker 3: I just like started yelling obscenities like yeah, I can't
- 1:47:05Speaker 3: believe it. I can't ever believe what. I just like
- 1:47:07Speaker 3: what he just did. And I think that was a lot.
- 1:47:10Speaker 3: That was a fun I miss having. It's funny a
- 1:47:13Speaker 3: fun night here, like for all that going on, it's
- 1:47:16Speaker 3: funny to me that we're all talking about like I
- 1:47:18Speaker 3: brought up seven when they were just so dominant, and
- 1:47:21Speaker 3: then you guys brought up thirteen when they turned over
- 1:47:24Speaker 3: all their receivers and you're mentioning Kenbrell Tompkins like being
- 1:47:28Speaker 3: you know, like it's just they could win so many
- 1:47:30Speaker 3: different ways. Well they just say it's such a contrast
- 1:47:32Speaker 3: between those two.
- 1:47:33Speaker 6: Teams, Like you know, I mean I know, twenty thirteen
- 1:47:35Speaker 6: Patriots weren't, you know, the worst team of the of
- 1:47:38Speaker 6: the last twenty years.
- 1:47:39Speaker 3: But you know, it's just they could beat you that
- 1:47:41Speaker 3: way when he had Scrubs and they didn't play great
- 1:47:44Speaker 3: the whole game and then they just kind of pulled
- 1:47:45Speaker 3: a couple drives out at the end, or they could
- 1:47:47Speaker 3: roll you for fifty at you know seven. It's just
- 1:47:49Speaker 3: such a contrast, so many different things to appreciate that.
- 1:47:52Speaker 5: Same strive, the game winning driving. People like say like, oh,
- 1:47:56Speaker 5: what's your argument for Brady being to go? And I'm like,
- 1:47:59Speaker 5: other than obvious, say the Super Bowls and stuffs, like
- 1:48:02Speaker 5: he led a touch game winning touchdown drive with Austin Colley, KEMBERL. Tompkins,
- 1:48:06Speaker 5: Aaron Dobbson like who, Like you don't know who? Like
- 1:48:09Speaker 5: that's the thing is, Look, I I don't want to
- 1:48:11Speaker 5: get at the whole thing. But like Peyton like played
- 1:48:14Speaker 5: with other Hall of famers around him a lot, okay
- 1:48:17Speaker 5: and Brady.
- 1:48:17Speaker 3: But he also did it with Austin.
- 1:48:21Speaker 5: But those but those guys were were not you know,
- 1:48:24Speaker 5: he had Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison before that, but
- 1:48:27Speaker 5: then he had Austin Colly and Peter top receiver and
- 1:48:30Speaker 5: he's a great player to not trying on Peyton, but
- 1:48:34Speaker 5: it just that he had. Brady had that ability to
- 1:48:37Speaker 5: elevate people around him, no question. And I look at
- 1:48:40Speaker 5: you know, again not to go on the whole Celtics rant,
- 1:48:42Speaker 5: but I look at like some of the athletes that
- 1:48:44Speaker 5: we have in Boston now that are great players at
- 1:48:46Speaker 5: their sports, but guys like Ortiz, guys like Brady, like
- 1:48:50Speaker 5: these guys just don't have that, Like they don't have
- 1:48:54Speaker 5: the Jason Tatum has generational talent, maybe, but he doesn't
- 1:48:58Speaker 5: have that like ability to just pull Austin Colly and
- 1:49:01Speaker 5: Ken Broo Tompkins to a game winning drive. And you know,
- 1:49:05Speaker 5: those types of moments are David Ortiz when everybody knows
- 1:49:08Speaker 5: that David ortis about to hit a Grand Slam and
- 1:49:10Speaker 5: tie the game, and he did it, like he just
- 1:49:12Speaker 5: does it.
- 1:49:13Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:49:13Speaker 6: I felt similar about the Patriots defense in the early
- 1:49:15Speaker 6: two thousands of you know, not at the level of what.
- 1:49:18Speaker 3: Brady became, but just I always had such confidence. I've
- 1:49:20Speaker 3: talked about it with Rabel too, like similar kind of thing,
- 1:49:23Speaker 3: like you just knew these guys have been in all
- 1:49:25Speaker 3: these situations and I just feel confident no matter who
- 1:49:28Speaker 3: they're going up against, they're gonna be a tough matchup
- 1:49:30Speaker 3: for whoever.
- 1:49:30Speaker 5: The Eagle Super Bowl is exactly that to me. The
- 1:49:33Speaker 5: first Eagles Super Bowl obviously, that was a touchdown game, right,
- 1:49:37Speaker 5: like they they were only up a touchdown.
- 1:49:40Speaker 3: Oh and they probably should have been losing by more
- 1:49:43Speaker 3: right earlier in the game. I thought Philly really outplayed
- 1:49:46Speaker 3: them in the first half. But I totally know where
- 1:49:49Speaker 3: you're gonna where you're going with this. I never, for once,
- 1:49:52Speaker 3: not a second thought the Patriots were gonna lose that game.
- 1:49:54Speaker 3: And I never really even thought they were in trouble.
- 1:49:56Speaker 5: No, and they that drive that Rod Harrison has the
- 1:50:00Speaker 5: pick to see it basically seal the game. That was
- 1:50:03Speaker 5: a touchdown game, right, And it never once did it.
- 1:50:06Speaker 5: Donn on mean that Donovan mcnabbles.
- 1:50:09Speaker 3: It was twenty four to twenty one.
- 1:50:10Speaker 5: I never in months did I think that Donavan mcnabble
- 1:50:12Speaker 5: is going to march down the field and win the
- 1:50:13Speaker 5: game for Philly.
- 1:50:14Speaker 3: No, No, I know one time, right, and then he
- 1:50:16Speaker 3: felt the same way when Eli Manning got put in
- 1:50:17Speaker 3: a similar situation. You know, at the end of the day,
- 1:50:19Speaker 3: that game and you're like, all right, like just close
- 1:50:22Speaker 3: it out. I mean, everybody just pictures Rodney Harrison intercep
- 1:50:24Speaker 3: of the running like I'll take it like on the
- 1:50:28Speaker 3: other side. And sometimes when he didn't do it, so yo,
- 1:50:32Speaker 3: I Manning scores a touchdown they were down three. I
- 1:50:36Speaker 3: just said, okay, it's like thirty seconds left, talk twenty six,
- 1:50:39Speaker 3: whatever it was, he'll get a field goal. Yeah, And
- 1:50:41Speaker 3: I couldn't believe they just threw bombs like the first
- 1:50:44Speaker 3: couple of plays. Now one of them like almost got completed.
- 1:50:48Speaker 3: But that still haunts me to this day. How come
- 1:50:50Speaker 3: I just like, why wouldn't you just continue to do
- 1:50:52Speaker 3: what you always do and run like these fifteen yard
- 1:50:55Speaker 3: crosses with Wes Welker, and yeah, call time out, get
- 1:50:58Speaker 3: out of bounds, do whatever you need to do, and
- 1:51:01Speaker 3: let's lift the fight another the show it always takes.
- 1:51:04Speaker 3: I thought they would, you know, to you a point
- 1:51:06Speaker 3: like the confidence that you had in the defense. I
- 1:51:08Speaker 3: had such confidence in that offense. I never never thought
- 1:51:11Speaker 3: that game was gonna end there. I said, go to
- 1:51:14Speaker 3: overtime and see what happens. Four Then then when they
- 1:51:16Speaker 3: you know, when when they sacked him on the first play,
- 1:51:19Speaker 3: I kind of said, maybe it's just not meant to be. Yeah,
- 1:51:21Speaker 3: and then against uh, Carolina, like Carolina was in that game,
- 1:51:25Speaker 3: Carolina I thought could win the game.
- 1:51:26Speaker 5: Carolina was squarely in that game, and yet somehow they
- 1:51:30Speaker 5: it just felt like they always figured it out. And then,
- 1:51:32Speaker 5: of course, as you reminded me of O seven, they
- 1:51:35Speaker 5: did not.
- 1:51:36Speaker 3: But I'm not gonna like pretend like that. The Eagles
- 1:51:39Speaker 3: game in four, I never thought they were going to
- 1:51:42Speaker 3: lose the game the year before, when Carolina kept coming back,
- 1:51:46Speaker 3: kept coming back, I thought that game play. I thought
- 1:51:49Speaker 3: that game could have gone either way.
- 1:51:51Speaker 5: If you're like my age or younger in Patriots fans
- 1:51:54Speaker 5: listening to this, go back and watch the Carolina Patriots
- 1:51:57Speaker 5: Super bowlts on YouTube. It's it's a dense version of
- 1:52:00Speaker 5: it actually on YouTube, so you don't even have to
- 1:52:02Speaker 5: watch commercials. That is an all time great game, just
- 1:52:06Speaker 5: a game in NFL history, a.
- 1:52:08Speaker 3: Weird game of the contrast of scoring in the first
- 1:52:11Speaker 3: fourteen to ten in the second, no scoring in the third,
- 1:52:14Speaker 3: ends up thirty twenty nine, right just to it always
- 1:52:17Speaker 3: gets missed.
- 1:52:18Speaker 5: I think because Carolina wasn't like this, you know, it
- 1:52:21Speaker 5: didn't They didn't have this great quarterback or it wasn't
- 1:52:23Speaker 5: a great Carolina team in theory, but that's one of
- 1:52:27Speaker 5: the best Super Bowls I think that that's ever been played.
- 1:52:29Speaker 6: I mean, Julius Peppers, I know that those guys just
- 1:52:32Speaker 6: I remember hearing from some of the Patriots guys talking
- 1:52:34Speaker 6: about that Super Bowl just how tough Carolina was, Like
- 1:52:37Speaker 6: they just they were a big Chris Jenkins.
- 1:52:40Speaker 3: Was it, Brentson Buckner, Chris Peppers, Peppers, they had Dan Morgan,
- 1:52:46Speaker 3: I think there, Uh, they had some players there that defense.
- 1:52:51Speaker 3: Steve Smith. Manning was not Daniel Moosen, Muhammed That's what
- 1:52:57Speaker 3: it was. Ricky Manning. Ricky I loved and I still
- 1:53:01Speaker 3: love Smith, Steve Smith. Yeah, Muhammad had like an eighty
- 1:53:03Speaker 3: seven yard touchdown. Yeah, that was a play that he's
- 1:53:06Speaker 3: stiff armed Eugene Wilson. I know, I've told this story
- 1:53:09Speaker 3: on the on the radio many times and Fred and
- 1:53:12Speaker 3: he got hurt on the play, and Fred insisted that
- 1:53:14Speaker 3: Wilson wasn't hurt and he was just embarrassed that he
- 1:53:17Speaker 3: gave up a touchdown and got stiff armed. He ended
- 1:53:20Speaker 3: up not returning to the game, having surgery to repair
- 1:53:23Speaker 3: a torn groin. I believe, and Fred still to this
- 1:53:28Speaker 3: day insists that it wasn't a real injury and he
- 1:53:31Speaker 3: was just all for effect.
- 1:53:32Speaker 5: He played the long I think that's still the longest
- 1:53:35Speaker 5: touchdown from scrimmage in Super Bowl history.
- 1:53:38Speaker 3: I want to say eighty seven years just like that.
- 1:53:41Speaker 3: But that was and that was the first time the
- 1:53:44Speaker 3: Patriots were trailing in something like ten games. And the
- 1:53:48Speaker 3: last time they had been trailing prior to that was
- 1:53:51Speaker 3: in the same stadium against Houston, like in November of
- 1:53:56Speaker 3: that year. And that was in the midstime before I
- 1:53:59Speaker 3: was tired. Was that what it was? Yes, they topped
- 1:54:03Speaker 3: out of that team was domin They kept running out out.
- 1:54:06Speaker 6: Let's grab a couple of emails here as we rolled
- 1:54:08Speaker 6: down the final stretch from Jerry North, Carolina.
- 1:54:11Speaker 3: Just about the rookie wide receivers.
- 1:54:13Speaker 6: If the two new wide receiver rookies show they can
- 1:54:16Speaker 6: contribute to the offense early in camp, can we package
- 1:54:18Speaker 6: Devontae Parker and Kendrick Bourne and a fourth to Denver
- 1:54:22Speaker 6: for Jerry Judy and a late round pick.
- 1:54:25Speaker 3: These are these are like the trade machine things right,
- 1:54:28Speaker 3: your trade has been rejected. We're getting a little wonky,
- 1:54:30Speaker 3: but we did talk.
- 1:54:31Speaker 6: About guys that maybe could be moved, and I know
- 1:54:34Speaker 6: Kendrick Bourne came up and I mentioned just as we
- 1:54:36Speaker 6: went to break of, we saw what Shack Mason just
- 1:54:39Speaker 6: got another nice three year, good money deal, solid for him,
- 1:54:43Speaker 6: Maybe a little bit of an indication of what Michael
- 1:54:46Speaker 6: and Win is going to potentially get next offseason. You've
- 1:54:49Speaker 6: got a couple, I mean, all three of these rookies
- 1:54:51Speaker 6: could probably play guard. Uh if one of them really pops,
- 1:54:54Speaker 6: do you do you swing on Minu for something? That's
- 1:54:57Speaker 6: that's my question right now, maybe as a trade bait guy.
- 1:54:59Speaker 3: And I know you hate it, Evan, No, I don't
- 1:55:01Speaker 3: hate it.
- 1:55:02Speaker 9: Uh.
- 1:55:02Speaker 3: Well, if one of them pups is a key part
- 1:55:04Speaker 3: of that, Like I don't want to trade him right now,
- 1:55:07Speaker 3: right right, but like you get into training camp and
- 1:55:10Speaker 3: somebody has an injury City Sow looks like he's every
- 1:55:12Speaker 3: bit as good as Michael Owenu. I'm not opposed to that.
- 1:55:14Speaker 5: Yeah, if there's one guy out of that twenty twenty
- 1:55:17Speaker 5: draft class, dugg or uj Onu, I don't mind parting
- 1:55:21Speaker 5: ways with it's right. I mean he's the guard, Like,
- 1:55:23Speaker 5: that's fine. My whole argument with them is just I
- 1:55:27Speaker 5: said is off air, there's no reason that Kyle Dugger
- 1:55:30Speaker 5: should not have a second contract with the Patriots. Like
- 1:55:32Speaker 5: there's he's done everything, He's checked every single box, he's developed,
- 1:55:36Speaker 5: he's been on an upward ascension now for a couple
- 1:55:38Speaker 5: of years. He's a good football player. You drafted a
- 1:55:41Speaker 5: good football player, and you shouldn't let those types of
- 1:55:43Speaker 5: guys walk. I think it's more complicated because of his
- 1:55:47Speaker 5: role and lack of three down versatility and things like that,
- 1:55:50Speaker 5: but I would throw him in that same category as
- 1:55:53Speaker 5: well that I feel like he has been somebody that
- 1:55:56Speaker 5: especially if he has a good year this year, I
- 1:55:59Speaker 5: would aspect that they should retain him now on WHENU
- 1:56:03Speaker 5: I can take it or leave it on him a
- 1:56:04Speaker 5: great football player, like really good guard. But Alix, I
- 1:56:08Speaker 5: think they learned, maybe they're lesson a little bit with
- 1:56:11Speaker 5: hoping with Joe Toney and Jack Mason that investing big
- 1:56:14Speaker 5: cap dollars, especially in guards is really not where you
- 1:56:18Speaker 5: want to allocate your resource, especially when you use the
- 1:56:20Speaker 5: first round pick on the left guard. So now you
- 1:56:23Speaker 5: have a first round pick at left guard, you have
- 1:56:24Speaker 5: a ten million dollar right guard. At some point you
- 1:56:27Speaker 5: need to spread the assets around a little bit more.
- 1:56:30Speaker 6: I want to make a better argument for Uch because
- 1:56:32Speaker 6: I just and like, I know everything you said. I mean,
- 1:56:35Speaker 6: he's not a full time player, but I do think
- 1:56:37Speaker 6: that in today's NFL, it's I look at it a
- 1:56:39Speaker 6: little bit different than I might have, say in twenty eleven,
- 1:56:42Speaker 6: when they kind of have Mark Anderson in as like
- 1:56:44Speaker 6: kind of in that role. I would say, like it
- 1:56:46Speaker 6: was and I know he got elevated to playing starting
- 1:56:49Speaker 6: defensive end after Andre Carter got hurt, but as you know,
- 1:56:53Speaker 6: a designated pass rusher essentially, like you need those guys
- 1:56:56Speaker 6: like you need an athlete like josh Uja coming off
- 1:56:59Speaker 6: the edge.
- 1:56:59Speaker 3: I just I find it.
- 1:57:00Speaker 6: Hard to It's just I know, you got to find
- 1:57:03Speaker 6: what money makes sense. And if he turns in a
- 1:57:05Speaker 6: twelve sax season this year, even if it's largely you know,
- 1:57:08Speaker 6: feeding off of the team defense and just kind of
- 1:57:10Speaker 6: being the finisher, I just I think the biggest thing
- 1:57:13Speaker 6: for me is what Evan.
- 1:57:14Speaker 3: Said, You drafted this kid, you developed him. You don't
- 1:57:17Speaker 3: have a lot of these guys. You want to have
- 1:57:19Speaker 3: some continuity in the locker room and guys who you
- 1:57:21Speaker 3: know can kind of carry the culture forward year to year.
- 1:57:23Speaker 3: You're not going to have you already lost mccordy this year,
- 1:57:26Speaker 3: you're probably gonna lose Slater. If not this year, you
- 1:57:27Speaker 3: know within the next year or two. So I there
- 1:57:31Speaker 3: haven't been a.
- 1:57:31Speaker 6: Lot of draft hits, and I just I struggle for
- 1:57:33Speaker 6: as much as I can say, he's not an every
- 1:57:35Speaker 6: down player, and he'll get paid somewhere else.
- 1:57:37Speaker 3: Maybe I agree. I'm less worried about him not being
- 1:57:41Speaker 3: an every down player as I am him not being
- 1:57:43Speaker 3: what we saw in the last eight weeks. Yeah, now
- 1:57:46Speaker 3: I'm fully ready to say, hey, look, I he was
- 1:57:49Speaker 3: a late bloomer, took him a while, maybe he was
- 1:57:52Speaker 3: banged up a little bit, first couple of years, came
- 1:57:54Speaker 3: into his own and if that's what I see this year,
- 1:57:57Speaker 3: I'm with you, Mike. Yeah, I'm less worried about him
- 1:57:59Speaker 3: being a full time player because I think that role
- 1:58:02Speaker 3: is very valuable, especially in today's NFL.
- 1:58:05Speaker 6: Yeah, you're playing I mean you're you're not playing a
- 1:58:06Speaker 6: lot of snaps, but you're playing the most critical down
- 1:58:09Speaker 6: in the game.
- 1:58:10Speaker 3: What do you pay for it is the question? And
- 1:58:12Speaker 3: that's why you know the Shaq Mason deal. It was
- 1:58:16Speaker 3: a three for thirty six. I'd sign up for that
- 1:58:21Speaker 3: for for a WHENU. Yeah, I don't think that's what
- 1:58:25Speaker 3: when you will sign for because the the free agents
- 1:58:29Speaker 3: in their prime are going to get like deals that
- 1:58:32Speaker 3: are twice that size. Ye, and that I would say,
- 1:58:36Speaker 3: I'm going to step back and say whatever it said.
- 1:58:38Speaker 3: I learned from Tuney and Mason, two really really good
- 1:58:41Speaker 3: players played at a very high level for the Patriots.
- 1:58:44Speaker 3: We re signed them. And it's not really the difference
- 1:58:48Speaker 3: between winning a Super Bowl or not, Like I can
- 1:58:51Speaker 3: I can get by with lesser at that position and
- 1:58:54Speaker 3: save money. Now, on one hand, I say you can
- 1:58:57Speaker 3: save money. If I thought they were just going to spend,
- 1:59:00Speaker 3: I wouldn't care. But I do think it matters. Like
- 1:59:03Speaker 3: everybody's got a budget, and I think it matters, so
- 1:59:05Speaker 3: I want to spend more Wisely.
- 1:59:08Speaker 6: Stevie just had to he emailed in just to agree
- 1:59:10Speaker 6: with you, Evan. If you haven't seen Panthers Super Bowl,
- 1:59:13Speaker 6: go check it out. Great game, especially the variable touchdown
- 1:59:16Speaker 6: fourth quarter was ridiculous.
- 1:59:18Speaker 3: That is in fact true.
- 1:59:19Speaker 5: It's also fun to watch those games now because you
- 1:59:21Speaker 5: know that they win. There's the stress of them potentially
- 1:59:25Speaker 5: losing the game.
- 1:59:26Speaker 3: Is no longer. I always like when I watch games
- 1:59:28Speaker 3: back then, you know, because I was here every day,
- 1:59:31Speaker 3: every game. And you remember like when Mike said that
- 1:59:34Speaker 3: he talked to a guy who was an undrafted free
- 1:59:36Speaker 3: agent and he said TC Taylor. I remember TC taylorah
- 1:59:40Speaker 3: from training Campy time came. When you go back and
- 1:59:44Speaker 3: watch that game, you see guys that you've never thought
- 1:59:47Speaker 3: of in fifteen years, never once. Yeah, And the guy
- 1:59:50Speaker 3: that always sticks out in that game for me is
- 1:59:51Speaker 3: Sean Mayer, who when they lost like nine thousand safety,
- 1:59:56Speaker 3: they lost Wilson, they lost Rodney, they just had to
- 1:59:59Speaker 3: put that was the version of Nate Ebe. We had
- 2:00:02Speaker 3: to finish the game at safety. Sean Mayor undrafted rookie
- 2:00:06Speaker 3: I want to sign out John Mayor Sean Sean Mayer.
- 2:00:10Speaker 3: I think he was out of Penn State. And I'm
- 2:00:11Speaker 3: a thirty night. When I watched that second look what
- 2:00:14Speaker 3: I was like, who the heck is that?
- 2:00:17Speaker 11: You know?
- 2:00:17Speaker 3: We keep on nexter Reid?
- 2:00:19Speaker 5: No wonder why Carolina put up thirty points in the
- 2:00:21Speaker 5: fourth course.
- 2:00:22Speaker 3: Oh yeah, no, that was that was part of it.
- 2:00:24Speaker 3: That was absolutely part of it. All right, that's gonna
- 2:00:27Speaker 3: do it for us? Becky pro don't go anywhere. The catch.
- 2:00:30Speaker 3: Twenty two guys are up next talking more football for
- 2:00:33Speaker 3: the next couple of hours, and uh, that'll do it
- 2:00:35Speaker 3: for the rest of us, though we'll be back next
- 2:00:37Speaker 3: week Tuesday. We're getting closer to OTAs and everything else
- 2:00:39Speaker 3: off season. Feel the love.
