Latest / Foul Territory / Fair Territory: Dodgers-Brewers NLCS preview, Guards force Game 5, Will Aaron Boone be back in '27?
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome everyone to a special Friday edition of Fair Territory.
- 0:04Speaker 2: I'm Ken Rosenthal here with Alana Rizzo.
- 0:07Speaker 1: We're doing the show today because it's an off day
- 0:09Speaker 1: in the National League and I am on the National
- 0:11Speaker 1: League Championship Series after this. But we have an actual
- 0:15Speaker 1: Game 5 to talk about, don't we, Alana?
- 0:18Speaker 3: Yeah, give the Guardians credit, Ken. Good to be with
- 0:20Speaker 3: you on this Friday, as always. Good to be with you, certainly.
- 0:25Speaker 3: I'm happy that it's going to Game 5. I think
- 0:27Speaker 3: it's better for baseball.
- 0:28Speaker 4: It's exciting. And kudos to the Guardians. How'd they get
- 0:30Speaker 4: it done?
- 0:32Speaker 1: Jose Ramirez was one part of it, but it was
- 0:34Speaker 1: a team thing. And really, the White Sox pitching has
- 0:37Speaker 1: kind of melted down in the last two games. 17
- 0:40Speaker 1: walks in the two. They've leaned so hard on their
- 0:43Speaker 1: bullpen all year. They don't really have a rotation, and
- 0:46Speaker 1: it seems to be catching up with them. Now, the
- 0:48Speaker 1: interesting thing here is that for game five, the White
- 0:53Speaker 1: Sox actually might be in decent shape. Now, remember, that's
- 0:56Speaker 1: the off day today, so that's going to help both teams.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Last night, the Guardians used eight pitchers, the White Sox seven.
- 1:03Speaker 1: But as I said, the White Sox do have a
- 1:05Speaker 1: quality starter in reserve. Their perhaps only quality starter, Sean Burk,
- 1:10Speaker 1: who will either start Game 5 or be a bulk
- 1:12Speaker 1: guy behind an opener. Now, I was in love with
- 1:15Speaker 1: what the Guardians were doing last night until I saw
- 1:18Speaker 1: Gavin Williams stroll out of the bullpen.
- 1:21Speaker 2: I understood it. You had to win the game. There's
- 1:23Speaker 2: no question about it. But it would have been a lot.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Cleaner if they didn't need him for 18 pitches after
- 1:30Speaker 1: Cade Smith threw 31. So we'll see how Gavin Williams does.
- 1:35Speaker 1: I'm sure he's going to pitch in a bulk role
- 1:37Speaker 1: on Saturday as well. But It's a little bit different
- 1:42Speaker 1: when you have to throw in the bullpen. I know
- 1:44Speaker 1: it's his throw day and fans do not seem to
- 1:46Speaker 1: understand this. When you throw in a game, a high
- 1:50Speaker 1: stress playoff game, it's a heck of a lot different
- 1:53Speaker 1: than throwing your bullpen session. So it's going to be
- 1:56Speaker 1: a really interesting game five. It's going to be your
- 1:59Speaker 1: basic battle or war of attrition. And as Zach Meisel
- 2:02Speaker 1: of The Athletic put it, this series has been.
- 2:04Speaker 2: One of bullpen dependent lawlessness. Sometimes I wish I could
- 2:08Speaker 2: write like Zach. He's really good.
- 2:11Speaker 4: Yeah, that was a great line. I love that.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Bullpen dependent lawlessness. A lot of love that. Good for
- 2:16Speaker 3: the Guardians. Good for the White Sox. It's been a
- 2:18Speaker 3: really fun time. Are you surprised, though, Ken, in terms
- 2:21Speaker 3: of deadline acquisitions, I guess, for the Guardians? Because is
- 2:25Speaker 3: the reason you and I were talking about this earlier,
- 2:28Speaker 3: perhaps they didn't really go for the gusto because the
- 2:30Speaker 3: American League this season a little bit more down than
- 2:33Speaker 3: years past?
- 2:34Speaker 2: They were more aggressive than usual, Alana. You're right. And
- 2:37Speaker 2: they were more aggressive in part Because they saw an opening.
- 2:41Speaker 2: They saw an opportunity.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Now, what they did was acquire Joe Adele, Nathaniel Lowe,
- 2:46Speaker 1: Foster Griffin. All have played major roles for them down
- 2:50Speaker 1: the stretch and in this series as well. And I
- 2:54Speaker 1: know they have the 30th ranked payroll, but for them,
- 2:57Speaker 1: this was a departure in this particular circumstance.
- 3:00Speaker 2: The deadline this year. And right now, I sort of
- 3:04Speaker 2: love where they are because obviously they're going home.
- 3:08Speaker 1: And while I do worry about their pitching for Saturday's game,
- 3:12Speaker 1: they will have the momentum going forward, at least until
- 3:17Speaker 1: the pitches are thrown, right? So we'll see what happens here.
- 3:21Speaker 1: It's amazing that the White Sox had a chance to
- 3:23Speaker 1: clinch a postseason series at home for the first time
- 3:26Speaker 1: in 120 years, two cracks at it, and didn't get
- 3:30Speaker 1: it done.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Yeah, 1906, the last time that that happened. All right,
- 3:34Speaker 3: time now for On Deck, presented by the Fox 1 app.
- 3:43Speaker 3: We appreciate Fox 1 being a partner with us this postseason. Ken,
- 3:46Speaker 3: what is the significance of the Brewers having home field
- 3:50Speaker 3: in this series? It didn't seem to matter last year.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Brewers, of course, finished with the best record in the
- 3:55Speaker 2: National League.
- 3:56Speaker 1: That is why they will have home field advantage against
- 3:59Speaker 1: the Dodgers for, as you mentioned, Alana, the second straight year.
- 4:03Speaker 2: You remember what happened last year? The Brewers got swept
- 4:06Speaker 2: in four games. Why did they get swept in four games?
- 4:09Speaker 1: Because the Dodgers pitching was at a level that they
- 4:12Speaker 1: had not reached even at any point during.
- 4:14Speaker 2: The regular season.
- 4:15Speaker 1: It was incredible what the Dodgers did from a pitching
- 4:18Speaker 1: standpoint in that series. My fear for the Brewers here
- 4:22Speaker 1: is that the same thing could happen again. If Atlanta
- 4:25Speaker 1: had pushed the Dodgers to a game five, which they
- 4:28Speaker 1: came fairly close to doing, then we would have seen
- 4:31Speaker 1: Scooble pitch game five and the series open with Blake Snell,
- 4:35Speaker 1: Scooble getting pushed back to three and seven. What we
- 4:38Speaker 1: have now is Scooble and Yamamoto lined up for one
- 4:42Speaker 1: and two and, of course, six and five and six
- 4:46Speaker 1: after that.
- 4:46Speaker 2: So one, two, five, six.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Scooble and Yamamoto will start at least four of these
- 4:51Speaker 1: games and could be available in seven in relief if
- 4:54Speaker 1: it goes that far. The Brewers need to win the
- 4:57Speaker 1: Miz games, starting with the opening game, and that is,
- 5:00Speaker 1: of course, when he will face Scooble. So while the
- 5:05Speaker 1: Brewers are at home, and of course it's always good
- 5:07Speaker 1: to be at home, it's who pitches that's going to
- 5:09Speaker 1: decide this thing, who pitches really well. And you have
- 5:12Speaker 1: to give the Dodgers the edge in starting pitching.
- 5:15Speaker 2: I love Logan Henderson.
- 5:17Speaker 1: He'll be matched up with Yamamoto in two, and that's
- 5:20Speaker 1: going to be a matchup that I would not concede
- 5:22Speaker 1: at all if I'm thinking about this game.
- 5:25Speaker 2: But it's going to be difficult.
- 5:27Speaker 1: The pitching edge that the Dodgers have, at least with
- 5:31Speaker 1: those two guys on the mound, Skubal and Yamamoto, I
- 5:33Speaker 1: don't know about Snell and I don't know about Glasnow,
- 5:35Speaker 1: but those two guys, they're really good.
- 5:39Speaker 4: They are really good.
- 5:40Speaker 3: And of course, we know that the Miz, Jacob Mizorowski,
- 5:43Speaker 3: is also a very good pitcher, Ken. Naturally, he was
- 5:46Speaker 3: an all-star this year. He throws a billion miles an hour.
- 5:48Speaker 3: And you mentioned Logan Henderson, not to take anything away
- 5:51Speaker 3: from him. But if the Dodgers are able to get
- 5:54Speaker 3: to Jacob Mizorowski, truly what else is in the Brewers' arsenal?
- 5:59Speaker 3: I would think that that's a massive win if you
- 6:01Speaker 3: could win a game started by Jacob Mizorowski.
- 6:04Speaker 1: It is, but the Brewers have a terrific bullpen, and
- 6:06Speaker 1: they find a way to get things done.
- 6:09Speaker 2: There's no question about that.
- 6:10Speaker 1: And you look at in the bullpen, Abner and Uribe,
- 6:13Speaker 1: Gasser pitched really well for them in this series. And
- 6:17Speaker 1: as a starter, they have ways to go. And maybe
- 6:20Speaker 1: Dustin May gives them something better.
- 6:22Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 6:23Speaker 1: It hasn't happened so far for them. So I'm not
- 6:26Speaker 1: so much worried about their pitching. They figure out their pitching,
- 6:29Speaker 1: and they've got a really good program. Much like Tampa Bay, they–
- 6:33Speaker 1: get the most out of their pitching, and the same
- 6:35Speaker 1: with Cleveland. The thing that these three low payroll teams
- 6:39Speaker 1: have in common, besides winning a lot in the regular season,
- 6:42Speaker 1: is they are quite advanced with how they approach pitching,
- 6:47Speaker 1: instruct pitching, and get the most out of pitching.
- 6:50Speaker 2: So the Brewers will.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Figure it out, even though their arms are not as
- 6:54Speaker 1: well-paid or as illustrious as the Dodgers. I'm not so
- 6:58Speaker 1: much worried about that. I'm more worried about them hitting
- 7:01Speaker 1: what the Dodgers have.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Ken, do you think this series, if it's going to
- 7:05Speaker 3: boil down to anything perhaps, is the Brewers' ability, whether
- 7:08Speaker 3: it's the starting staff or the bullpen, the ability to
- 7:11Speaker 3: keep the Dodgers in the ballpark? Now, the Dodgers so
- 7:13Speaker 3: far this postseason have scored 14 runs. All but three
- 7:16Speaker 3: of those runs have come via the long ball. They've
- 7:19Speaker 3: batted 203 with a 264 on-base percentage.
- 7:23Speaker 4: Keep them in the park? Is that the key?
- 7:26Speaker 1: It's one key for sure, and... It's going to be
- 7:29Speaker 1: really interesting, and we'll get to Otani in a second.
- 7:31Speaker 1: But what is he going to be here? And what
- 7:34Speaker 1: kind of factor will he be? Will Smith has struggled.
- 7:37Speaker 1: But they've gotten some really good things that have happened.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Tucker, of course, reviving. Mookie Betts reviving. Freeman hitting two
- 7:45Speaker 2: home runs. Max Muncy.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Kike Hernandez. All of these things offensively have been good. But, yes,
- 7:51Speaker 1: it's been an overly reliant home run offense. Now, you
- 7:55Speaker 1: hear it all the time.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Home runs do win in the postseason. We love contact.
- 7:59Speaker 2: We love seeing the Rays and the Brewers go at
- 8:01Speaker 2: it the way they do. But you do need homers,
- 8:04Speaker 2: and you can win.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Pretty much with solely homers. The Dodgers have done that,
- 8:09Speaker 1: and they're going to need more offense. You just cited
- 8:13Speaker 1: some statistics that are rather negative in what they did
- 8:17Speaker 1: against Atlanta, a team with a supposedly challenged pitching staff.
- 8:21Speaker 1: So that is going to be really interesting. Is the
- 8:24Speaker 1: Dodgers offense, which is coming on this year, is it
- 8:27Speaker 1: going to be in its kind of lesser mode in this?
- 8:30Speaker 1: Or will it be what we sort of hinted at
- 8:34Speaker 1: or sort of started to see in the division series?
- 8:37Speaker 3: And it's kind of funny, too, because the Dodgers guys
- 8:40Speaker 3: that they weren't getting a lot from offensively in the
- 8:42Speaker 3: regular season, like the Andy Pajas of the world, the
- 8:44Speaker 3: Kyle Tucker, certainly didn't. have shown up big in this
- 8:48Speaker 3: division series so far. As a NLCS thought exercise, Ken,
- 8:52Speaker 3: if you ranked the seven best position players in this
- 8:55Speaker 3: series right now, how many of them would be Brewers
- 8:58Speaker 3: in your mind? Wow.
- 9:02Speaker 1: I would make the case for Churrio for sure. Fastest
- 9:04Speaker 1: hands in the game, and you cannot get a fastball
- 9:06Speaker 1: by that dude.
- 9:07Speaker 2: I know he was only.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Three for 16 in the DS, but the hit was
- 9:11Speaker 1: the two-run single, the walk-off.
- 9:13Speaker 2: In game two, I believe it was. So, He's one.
- 9:17Speaker 2: He's in there for me.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Contreras, you can argue as well, the catcher. He might
- 9:20Speaker 1: be one of the better position players as well if
- 9:23Speaker 1: you want to rank the top seven. The Dodgers have
- 9:25Speaker 1: the bigger names. They have the more accomplished players. And
- 9:29Speaker 1: in some cases, some guys doing pretty well right now.
- 9:32Speaker 1: We mentioned Tucker and Mookie. Dave Roberts said that Mookie
- 9:35Speaker 1: Betts looks the best he has in the postseason. Just
- 9:37Speaker 1: the look on his face since 2020. That said, that
- 9:42Speaker 1: is not a way to look at this. Because the
- 9:45Speaker 1: Brewers are a team that is greater than the sum
- 9:48Speaker 1: of its parts. Now, the parts are good. They're better
- 9:50Speaker 1: than maybe people give them credit for. But the way
- 9:54Speaker 1: they play and the way they have a knack for
- 9:58Speaker 1: finding ways to win. that transcends maybe each positional battle
- 10:04Speaker 1: or you want to call it.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Those positional battles you see.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Websites like mine and newspapers rank all the time.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Who's the better third baseman?
- 10:12Speaker 1: No, no, no.
- 10:12Speaker 2: It doesn't matter.
- 10:14Speaker 1: But what the Brewers do and the way they play
- 10:17Speaker 1: and their defense is better than the Dodgers.
- 10:21Speaker 2: That is why they win games, because they play a
- 10:24Speaker 2: team game and they play a clean game, for the
- 10:26Speaker 2: most part. Didn't always against the Padres.
- 10:29Speaker 1: So I don't look at it like that, Alana, which
- 10:32Speaker 1: position players are the best ones on the field, because
- 10:35Speaker 1: who knows? Maybe Sal Freelick does something big. Maybe Bryce
- 10:38Speaker 1: Terang does something big. Cooper Pratt, even the kid.
- 10:41Speaker 2: There's a number of ways Yelich looked revived in the DS.
- 10:46Speaker 2: There are a number of ways the Brewers can beat you.
- 10:48Speaker 3: Yeah, their newly appointed captain, Christian Yelich. He might be
- 10:51Speaker 3: a little bit older, but he is still a good
- 10:53Speaker 3: professional at bat and not an easy out, certainly. Now,
- 10:56Speaker 3: Shohei Otani, Ken, has become more of an easy out.
- 10:59Speaker 3: And I only say that just because we're so used
- 11:02Speaker 3: to Shohei exceeding any expectation. But he hasn't been the
- 11:06Speaker 3: same since he's been hurt. Can Shohei Otani get back
- 11:10Speaker 3: to being who he is? So far in the series,
- 11:13Speaker 3: two for 13, two walks, and so far in what
- 11:17Speaker 3: he's done, this postseason?
- 11:20Speaker 2: Well, that's one of the big questions, right?
- 11:23Speaker 1: And there's no way to answer that question right now,
- 11:26Speaker 1: but the Dodgers are going to keep running him out there.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Now they dropped him to fifth in game three, batted
- 11:31Speaker 1: him fourth in game four. They're toying with the lineup
- 11:33Speaker 1: a little bit, trying to figure out the best combination
- 11:37Speaker 1: and you don't.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Want to bury him. You don't want to bat him
- 11:39Speaker 2: eighth the way Joe Torrey did with Alex Rodriguez one year.
- 11:41Speaker 1: But at the same time, he's not giving them enough
- 11:46Speaker 1: right now.
- 11:47Speaker 2: And the two hits were singles. He did walk, steal
- 11:50Speaker 2: a base score, run in Game 4.
- 11:52Speaker 1: It was encouraging at least to see him kind of
- 11:55Speaker 1: moving around better, but he is not.
- 11:57Speaker 2: The same at the plate right now. Now, the thing
- 12:00Speaker 2: you will hear.
- 12:00Speaker 1: From everyone in the postseason who's talking about a struggling hitter, well,
- 12:06Speaker 1: it's only one swing away.
- 12:08Speaker 2: That's true. He might only be one swing away, but
- 12:10Speaker 2: we're still waiting for it.
- 12:12Speaker 3: Okay, now Edwin Diaz seems like he's regained some of
- 12:15Speaker 3: his composure. Some of the stuff is back. We noticed it, Ken,
- 12:18Speaker 3: at the last week of the regular season. He's been
- 12:21Speaker 3: good in the times that he's been out there so
- 12:23Speaker 3: far in the postseason. How do you think that affects
- 12:26Speaker 3: the Dodgers' bullpen thinking if they can truly count on
- 12:29Speaker 3: him as their ninth inning guy?
- 12:30Speaker 2: Helps it a lot.
- 12:32Speaker 1: And Andrew Friedman's been saying for a while now that
- 12:35Speaker 1: this is the best pitching staff they've taken into a postseason.
- 12:39Speaker 1: Now that Diaz is doing this, I would agree. And remember,
- 12:44Speaker 1: in 24, they had to lean on their bullpen. In 25,
- 12:48Speaker 1: they leaned on their starters. And now it seems they
- 12:51Speaker 1: have the best of both worlds. Really great rotation, of course,
- 12:55Speaker 1: and a quality bullpen. So if Diaz can close, it
- 12:58Speaker 1: kind of solves the problem. And yet they don't have
- 13:01Speaker 1: to run him out in the ninth inning all the time.
- 13:03Speaker 1: If they see a pocket in the eighth inning that
- 13:05Speaker 1: they prefer, sure, you can do that and close with
- 13:08Speaker 1: Tanner Scott. You can even close with Evan Phillips if
- 13:10Speaker 1: you wanted to. So the fact that he's back and
- 13:15Speaker 1: he looks like he is back in classic Edwin Diaz form,
- 13:19Speaker 1: that's a big boost for the Dodgers. And as I said,
- 13:23Speaker 1: the Brewers bullpen is really good, too. Maybe not Padres level,
- 13:26Speaker 1: maybe not even Dodgers level right now. But at the
- 13:29Speaker 1: same time, with McGill and Uribe and Ashby and the
- 13:33Speaker 1: guys that they run out there, that's an impressive group
- 13:36Speaker 1: as well.
- 13:37Speaker 4: I am really looking forward to the series.
- 13:38Speaker 3: Two very different styles, but two very good teams led
- 13:42Speaker 3: by two really good managers too. MLB on Fox is

- 14:17Speaker 3: Get those questions into the chat, your opportunity to ask
- 14:21Speaker 3: Ken what is on your mind.
- 14:22Speaker 4: All right, here's one in terms of the Rays.
- 14:25Speaker 3: Aside from Junior Caminero, Ken, which Rays hitter should casual
- 14:31Speaker 3: fans know more about?
- 14:32Speaker 4: Who are we missing? Who are we not paying attention to?
- 14:35Speaker 1: I could probably name five guys, maybe even more, but
- 14:38Speaker 1: I'll go with Victor Mesa Jr.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Now, Victor Mesa Jr., is a guy the Rays picked
- 14:43Speaker 2: up in February in a.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Minor trade, it seemed at the time, with the Marlins.
- 14:48Speaker 1: And Will Salmon of The Athletic, my colleague there, wrote
- 14:51Speaker 1: a terrific story yesterday. I advise people to read it.
- 14:53Speaker 1: About five key pickups for the Rays, under-the-radar pickups.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Victor Mesa Jr. was one of them.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Now, here's a guy that they basically acquired for outfield depth.
- 15:03Speaker 2: They were thin at the time.
- 15:05Speaker 1: And yet, he has come on this season, 14 home runs,
- 15:09Speaker 1: 825 OPS and 262 plate appearances. In the DS, he
- 15:14Speaker 1: was two for 10 with a homer. He is a
- 15:16Speaker 1: dynamic player. He is a guy that has a great
- 15:19Speaker 1: knowledge of the game. He's the son of a former
- 15:21Speaker 1: big time star in Cuba, the brother of a guy
- 15:24Speaker 1: who was a better prospect or considered a better prospect
- 15:27Speaker 1: than him.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Victor Victor Mesa. But Victor Mesa Jr.
- 15:31Speaker 1: if not quite a star yet, certainly has come into
- 15:35Speaker 1: his own. And it's been really impressive to see As always,
- 15:39Speaker 1: the Rays getting the most out of players that maybe
- 15:42Speaker 1: other teams didn't see in the same way. And you
- 15:45Speaker 1: talk about the quality of front offices and how teams
- 15:49Speaker 1: go about it. They're not perfect. They don't make every
- 15:53Speaker 1: great move. Remember, they traded Joe Ryan for Nelson Cruz.
- 15:58Speaker 1: They've made some other moves as well that didn't work out.
- 16:00Speaker 1: It's not like everything works for them. But at the
- 16:02Speaker 1: same time, and I'll mention Curtis Meade for Christopher Sanchez.
- 16:06Speaker 2: That was another one that didn't work out. At the
- 16:08Speaker 2: same time, They get more right than they don't. And
- 16:11Speaker 2: they get a lot right on the margins. And Victor
- 16:13Speaker 2: Mesa Jr. was one of them. And this is one
- 16:15Speaker 2: reason why they are who they are and where they
- 16:18Speaker 2: are today.
- 16:19Speaker 3: Elisheva Jones wants to know this in regards to the
- 16:22Speaker 3: New York Yankees. Ken, is Erin Boone going to be
- 16:26Speaker 3: the Yankees manager next year? Certainly she's not the only
- 16:29Speaker 3: one that has this question.
- 16:30Speaker 2: No, she's not. And there are a lot of people
- 16:33Speaker 2: wondering that. And the answer seems to be yes. Brian Cashman,
- 16:38Speaker 2: the general manager.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Spoke before game three of the division series against the
- 16:41Speaker 1: Rays and basically endorsed Boone for another year. And of course,
- 16:45Speaker 1: the Yankees lost game three. The only team not to
- 16:47Speaker 1: win a game in the division series this year was
- 16:50Speaker 1: the New York Yankees. Now, the better question is, should
- 16:54Speaker 1: Boone be back? And that's a tough one because arguably
- 16:58Speaker 1: in the regular season, This was one of his better jobs,
- 17:02Speaker 1: maybe his best job. Remember, they didn't have Judge. They
- 17:04Speaker 1: were missing Cole and Freed and Rodon for lengthy periods.
- 17:08Speaker 1: And yet they still won 93 games, still beat the
- 17:11Speaker 1: Red Sox in the wildcard round. From all of that,
- 17:14Speaker 1: all of those perspectives, you'd say Aaron Boone should be back.
- 17:18Speaker 1: At the same time, I understand the frustration of Yankee
- 17:21Speaker 1: fans who say, hey.
- 17:22Speaker 2: We're doing the same thing every year. What are we doing?
- 17:25Speaker 1: Let's change something up, whether it's Cashman, Boone, both.
- 17:29Speaker 2: And that is a fair point. And at some.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Point in a team's evolution, in a team's existence, there
- 17:37Speaker 1: are times when you have to ask, OK, we like
- 17:40Speaker 1: what we have, but it's not really working the way
- 17:42Speaker 1: we want.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Let's try something different. And if the Yankees do indeed
- 17:47Speaker 2: bring back Boone.
- 17:48Speaker 1: My question will be, OK, how are you going to
- 17:51Speaker 1: get back to where you were this year if you
- 17:54Speaker 1: can even do that?
- 17:55Speaker 2: And how do you get better? That's the bigger question.
- 17:58Speaker 2: How do you get better if the New York Yankees, and.
- 18:01Speaker 1: I don't see them having an answer to that, a
- 18:03Speaker 1: good one.
- 18:05Speaker 3: Ken, do you think, or are you surprised, and maybe
- 18:07Speaker 3: surprised isn't the right phrase, but are you surprised, I guess,
- 18:10Speaker 3: that Hal is as loyal as he is and consistent
- 18:13Speaker 3: as he is with the front office stuff, considering how
- 18:16Speaker 3: volatile and what a revolving door his dad had?
- 18:19Speaker 1: Well, if you remember, with his dad, the Yankees had
- 18:22Speaker 1: 15 managers in 20 years.
- 18:23Speaker 2: That was a little nuts. That was over the top.
- 18:28Speaker 2: It was way much.
- 18:29Speaker 1: But, yes, I am a little surprised. Not that he's
- 18:33Speaker 1: the son of George Steinbrenner acting like this. People are
- 18:36Speaker 1: going to be different. Many of us are different than
- 18:38Speaker 1: our fathers or mothers or whatever. But what I'm surprised
- 18:41Speaker 1: is how long they've been willing to tolerate the same
- 18:45Speaker 1: thing happening all the time. And the real problem for
- 18:48Speaker 1: the Yankees, Aaron Judge, 35 next year.
- 18:51Speaker 2: Garrett Cole not getting any younger. They're an older group
- 18:54Speaker 2: with their core young.
- 18:55Speaker 1: And the window for them to win a World Series
- 18:58Speaker 1: might already have passed.
- 19:01Speaker 2: So that is a problem. And I don't know, again,
- 19:04Speaker 2: how they fix it.
- 19:04Speaker 1: How do they get younger and more athletic and better
- 19:06Speaker 1: defensively overnight?
- 19:09Speaker 2: Not going to happen.
- 19:10Speaker 3: Yeah, that's the biggest thing. Better defensively, more fundamental. That
- 19:13Speaker 3: certainly doesn't happen overnight. That has to be a philosophy shift. Ken,
- 19:16Speaker 3: this is not a question, but more of a comment.
- 19:18Speaker 3: Joe Techno, props to Ken. We're still keeping the bow
- 19:22Speaker 3: tie on in the heat. How hot was it down there?
- 19:25Speaker 3: Cause it's even hotter on the field.
- 19:27Speaker 1: It was very hot, but I will say this. The
- 19:30Speaker 1: people at Fox found me a place that was in
- 19:33Speaker 1: the shade. Normally at Dodger stadium in Alani, I sit
- 19:36Speaker 1: where you used to sit right next to the dugout
- 19:38Speaker 1: at Dodger stadium.
- 19:39Speaker 2: And it's when the sun is out, it's smoking.
- 19:42Speaker 1: If I would have had to have sat there, it
- 19:43Speaker 1: would have been a problem, but they found me a
- 19:45Speaker 1: place in the other dugout, kind.
- 19:47Speaker 2: Of adjoining where there was shade. It was fantastic.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Because I take my jacket off when I'm not doing interviews.
- 19:53Speaker 1: And the next day was a night game or at
- 19:56Speaker 1: least a five o'clock game. So it was totally fine.
- 19:58Speaker 1: So I don't really deserve props. I'll be deserving props
- 20:01Speaker 1: if it gets cold and I don't wilt because I'm.
- 20:04Speaker 4: Not doing the cold. Nor am I.
- 20:07Speaker 3: I remember 2018 when the Dodgers were playing the Red
- 20:09Speaker 3: Sox in that Red Sox World Series championship.
- 20:11Speaker 4: I was like, I don't care who wins. Kidding. But
- 20:14Speaker 4: I was like, can we just please go back to L.A.?
- 20:15Speaker 4: I was freezing to death. All right, guys.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Appreciate the questions as always. We are crowning our dudes
- 20:21Speaker 3: and dorks of the week next.
- 20:24Speaker 2: I'm the dude. So that's what you call me.
- 20:30Speaker 4: You heard him. He's the dude. That's what you call him. Ken,
- 20:33Speaker 4: who is your dude of the week?
- 20:35Speaker 2: Patrick Bailey, Cleveland Guardians catcher.
- 20:38Speaker 1: Now, if you remember, Patrick Bailey was let go by
- 20:41Speaker 1: the Giants in a trade to the Guardians in May.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Giants didn't like that he didn't really hit. They didn't
- 20:47Speaker 1: like some of the defensive things as well, even though
- 20:49Speaker 1: he's considered one of the best defensive catchers in the game.
- 20:52Speaker 1: The Guardians were overjoyed to get Bailey, who is kind
- 20:56Speaker 1: of like Austin Hedges, a great Defender and not a
- 21:00Speaker 1: great hitter. Well, since joining the Guardians, he's been almost
- 21:03Speaker 1: a league average hitter. And last night, when the season
- 21:06Speaker 1: was on the line, he produced in a big way.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Pinch hit home run in the fifth inning off Eric Fetty.
- 21:13Speaker 1: That scored the Guardians' first run. And then a tie-breaking
- 21:16Speaker 1: RBI single off the previously invincible Grant Taylor in the sixth.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Patrick Bailey, huge night. And let's see, maybe Austin Hedges
- 21:25Speaker 2: will be the hero of Game 5.
- 21:27Speaker 3: Yeah, the Guardians, just the fifth team in Major League
- 21:29Speaker 3: Baseball history, Ken, to score nine plus runs in consecutive
- 21:32Speaker 3: postseason games when facing elimination. And that is why the
- 21:37Speaker 3: Guardians are my dudes of the week. We talked so
- 21:40Speaker 3: much coming into this series, of course, about how fun
- 21:43Speaker 3: the White Sox have been to watch.
- 21:44Speaker 4: And they certainly are. It's a group of kids. Basically,
- 21:46Speaker 4: it's almost like watching a college baseball team.
- 21:49Speaker 3: Opportunity to clinch at home for the first time in
- 21:51Speaker 3: 120 years. Going back to the blackout, nobody really gave
- 21:56Speaker 3: the Guardians much chance because it was said that they
- 21:58Speaker 3: certainly couldn't hit. And by and large, they have not
- 22:01Speaker 3: been able to hit. But they've been able to force
- 22:03Speaker 3: the issue and force a game five back in Cleveland,
- 22:06Speaker 3: making it a very entertaining series. When their backs were
- 22:10Speaker 3: against the wall, congratulations to the Guardians. You guys are
- 22:13Speaker 3: my dudes of the week. All right, time now for.
- 22:15Speaker 4: Dork of the week.
- 22:26Speaker 3: The complete opposite of the Guardians. Who is your dork
- 22:29Speaker 3: of the weekend?
- 22:31Speaker 2: Baltimore Orioles.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Not only are we not seeing them in the playoffs,
- 22:35Speaker 1: we got the news this week that they laid off
- 22:38Speaker 1: 16 people, including the people who played the roles of
- 22:42Speaker 1: the Oriole Bird and Mr.
- 22:44Speaker 2: Splash. Mr. Splash is the person who sprays people with
- 22:47Speaker 2: water out in the bleachers. Now, I would suggest.
- 22:50Speaker 1: that the Orioles have bigger problems than the person playing
- 22:54Speaker 1: the Oriole bird and Mr.
- 22:55Speaker 2: Splash.
- 22:56Speaker 1: And their fans might suggest that the big problem is
- 23:00Speaker 1: the way the team is run, that Mike Elias has
- 23:03Speaker 1: not produced a team that has won a playoff game yet.
- 23:07Speaker 1: So when you are letting people like this go as
- 23:11Speaker 1: a downsizing that included 16 people in all, and you're
- 23:15Speaker 1: not doing anything when baseball operations, other than letting people
- 23:19Speaker 1: go there too, It's not a great look.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Orioles, dorks of the week.
- 23:24Speaker 3: Yeah, it brings me back to the comment that we
- 23:25Speaker 3: had in the chat a couple of weeks ago. Does
- 23:27Speaker 3: Mike Elias need to burn down the warehouse in order
- 23:31Speaker 3: for him to be on the hot seat? It appears
- 23:33Speaker 3: as such, but I'm sure. Oriole Bird had a lot
- 23:36Speaker 3: to do with runners in scoring position, Ken. All right,
- 23:39Speaker 3: my dork of the week, the Yankee fan that continues,
- 23:43Speaker 3: Yankee fans in general, or any fan in general that
- 23:45Speaker 3: continues to reach over and interfere with.
- 23:49Speaker 4: A ball in play.
- 23:51Speaker 3: Now, I do understand the absolute instinctiveness or the instinct
- 23:55Speaker 3: to go for a ball. But this obviously is going
- 23:59Speaker 3: to hurt your team. It did hurt the team. We
- 24:02Speaker 3: don't know exactly where the ball was going to land.
- 24:04Speaker 3: I do believe George Lombard Jr.
- 24:06Speaker 4: Would have scored anyway.
- 24:07Speaker 3: I think the umpires did a phenomenal job in terms
- 24:10Speaker 3: of reviewing that and doing what they were supposed to
- 24:12Speaker 3: do and putting Volpe back on second. But Yankee fans,
- 24:15Speaker 3: fans in general, please stop interfering. And didn't you tell
- 24:20Speaker 3: me earlier today, Ken, that it was a very special
- 24:22Speaker 3: 30th anniversary of something that happened like this to the
- 24:25Speaker 3: Toronto Blue Jays?
- 24:26Speaker 1: A very special anniversary and happy anniversary to those who
- 24:29Speaker 1: observed the Jeffrey Mayer game. We talked about it in
- 24:32Speaker 1: Inside Dish on Monday, game one of the 1996 ALCS.
- 24:34Speaker 1: Jeffrey Mayer, then a 12-year-old kid, reaches over the right
- 24:39Speaker 1: field wall, home run by Derek Jeter. It should have
- 24:42Speaker 1: been fan interference.
- 24:43Speaker 2: It wasn't. So what happened the other night was a
- 24:46Speaker 2: little bit of karma.
- 24:47Speaker 4: Little bit of karma.
- 24:48Speaker 3: We will never forget, of course, the Steve Bartman situation.
- 24:51Speaker 3: And last year, or a couple years ago, with the
- 24:55Speaker 3: Yankees fans, with Mookie Betts, you know, leaning over, grabbing
- 24:58Speaker 3: his wrist, all of those silliness.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Stop it.
- 25:00Speaker 4: Stop it, stop it, stop it. All right, guys, that's
- 25:02Speaker 4: going to do it for us. Foul territory is coming
- 25:05Speaker 4: up next. AJ Pierzynski is probably not too happy.
- 25:08Speaker 3: And Eric Kratz, Max Muncy is on the show, Kurt
- 25:12Speaker 3: Hogue as well. The Fair Territory schedule, it's moving around
- 25:15Speaker 3: a little bit. Ken is very busy, obviously, so we
- 25:17Speaker 3: will be back next week. Have a great weekend. Looking
