- 0:06SPEAKER_00: My dear friend, there are battles this world was never meant for a man to fight alone.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: God did not shape us to stand as isolated stones, but as living stones built together into one house.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: When my strength begins to fail, let yours remind me to stand.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: When your heart grows weary, let mine help carry the burden.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: A true Christian brother does not rejoice only in victories.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: He kneels besides his friend in defeat, prays through the night, speaks truth when it is difficult, and refuses to walk away when the road becomes steep.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Such friendship is not held together by convenience, but by Christ himself.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: The world measures men by wealth, power, and applause, but heaven measures them by faithfulness.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Blessed is the man who has a brother willing to sharpen him as iron sharpens iron, who celebrates righteousness more than success, and who would rather wound with honest truth than flatter with comforting lies.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: In a lonely age, Christian brotherhood shines like a fire on a cold mountainside, calling weary travelers home.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: It reminds us that courage is strengthened when shared, and that burdens become lighter when carried by more than one pair of hands.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: One day, the voices of this world will grow silent.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Our labor will end, and every earthly accomplishment that we have made will only fade into dust.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: But the prayers whispered by one another, the tears shed besides hospital beds, the laughter around humble tables, the scriptures read together, and the faithful miles walked shoulder to shoulder will echo into eternity.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: May we be remembered not merely as men who believed in Christ, but as brothers who loved one another because of him, until together we hear our Savior say, Well done, good and faithful servant, and enter into the joy of the Lord.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Everybody, welcome to the Goon Tavern.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: Keever, your host.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Goon Tavern.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: I am the Goon, and today we are going to talk about 10 things that men need from other Christian men.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: And I think this is going to be hopefully an encouraging episode for a lot of you guys out there.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: I know that men go through a lot.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of weight on your shoulders.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: And it's a battle out there.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: And you're not meant to do it alone.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: We need to have brotherly advice, encouragement, loyalty, a goal and mission, financial goals as well, to love our families well, to spiritually lead.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: And there's a lot asking of us, especially when everything is against us from succeeding.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: But when you have someone by your side that is in your corner to not only just flatter your ears, but also give you hard truths that will push you in the right direction to grow as a man, that is dangerous to the enemy.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: And so I hope that by the time this episode is done, it will encourage you in the right direction to think and seek out certain things that you might not be seeking out right now, or maybe sharpen it even better than you already are.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: So today in society, a lot of the times men are expected to be independent.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: It's not just feminism with women.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: But the truth is when you think about it, nobody's truly a hundred percent independent unless you are out in the bush, maybe of Alaska, I don't know, in a cabin where no one can get there except by maybe a pilot uh boat that goes on water.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: But the truth is men desire friendship, they desire to have close-knit relationships and not shallow ones either.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: I think sometimes we want that a lot.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: We might not ask for it, but we do need someone in your corner.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: You have to have that.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: And but scripture, even though society might say that, you can be strong.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: It doesn't mean you're stupid, that you're incapable of doing things on your own per se.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: But it is far easier, and there's a lot of scripture to back this up.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: Scripture tells men to stand together.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: Christian Christianity was never designed to be lived in isolation ever.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: And I think sometimes people do that in the sense of they don't go to church anymore, they become isolated, they don't have accountability in their life, they don't have encouragement, they don't have someone to guide their decision making or to bounce ideas off of.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: They're just kind of left to their own demise.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: And I don't think that's wise.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: And scripture doesn't show that either.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: Satan often attacks lone Christians because isolated men are easier targets.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: It's just the idea of a pack when you are in Africa.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: If there's a thousand wildebees and you're all running as one, it is much harder for a line to pick out one from the herd.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: And that's how the herd survives is in numbers.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: And Christianity is no exception to that.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: And so I think strong churches are built not only on strong men, but ones that strengthen each other and look out for each other.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: A few scriptures that I wanted to read.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: We have Ecclesiastes, and I'm gonna go there real quick to read this for you.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: And it's uh Ecclesiastes 4, 9 through 12, and this is what it reads, okay?
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: For two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: For if they fall, one will lift up his companion.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: But woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he has no one to help him up.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: But how can one be warm alone?
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: The one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand, and the threefold cord is not quickly broken.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: And that's also a scripture that's used, I know, a lot at weddings as well, but it's very true.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: I know in my life, especially, I have had friends in my life that I've known since junior high, still friends with them to this day.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: I've lost friends, I've gained friends, new ones, and some I've lost not because I wanted it to happen, but sometimes things happen.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: You have a fallout, and sometimes it's a healthy thing for maybe both both of you.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: I think a lot of times we don't think of how important it is to have Christian brothers in our lives.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: It's not that you can't have secular friends, but it only goes so deep with where you can talk about certain things and see eye to eye, especially through a biblical worldview lens.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: And a secular person is not going to have that insight, they're not going to have the same conviction.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: Some things they might.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: It doesn't mean that they're not important or that they can't be helpful to some degree, but it does change the dynamic a lot.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: Another one that's really I thought it would be encouraging for you guys is Proverbs 27:17.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: And that reads, as iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: And we've heard this verse many times.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: It was even in the opening.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: But it really is true when you have someone to grind against, to bounce ideas off of, to ask you about who you're gonna marry or a job you're gonna take or a business venture, buying a certain house or finances or something, you have a friend that is capable of those things.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: And not every friend is gonna be able to hit every list for sure.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: It's good to have two to three solid friends that are always gonna just be able to in different ways cultivate your spiritual growth.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: And the other one is in Hebrews 10, uh, 24 through 25, and I'll read that real quick.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: So chapter 10, 24 through 25, and let us consider one another in to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembly of ourselves together as in a matter of sum, but exhorting one another and do much more as you see the day approaching.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: And that's also just for church assembly.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: I know when I see my brothers on Sunday morning, it is a great blessing because when you are surrounded by people that are like-minded, and not necessarily that you agree on everything, but you're on the same page, you see eye to eye, and it's so important.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: And we're gonna go through just 10 things that I believe Christian men need from other Christian men.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: And the first one we're gonna start with was, of course, accountability.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: Christian men need brothers willing to ask the hard questions, and of course, I know that a lot of times when we hear accountability, immediately we think of like our thought life, what we watch on the internet, whatever, you know.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: I understand that, and that's good, and that's another topic, too, in terms of like how to battle that.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: And accountability is good, but if you're not honest also with your brother, accountability is worthless.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: You have to be willing to have a vow with each other to not lie to each other, to not be fake, otherwise, the accountability is useless.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: And I think accountability is there's it's uh not only just your walk with Christ, you can ask the question how is your marriage doing, and maybe not just marriage in general.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: I think you want to have men that will keep you accountable on your role as a husband, and that they will be able to give you good feedback on how to do better and how you can just strive in that area biblically.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: There's obviously, of course, purity, whether or not you're married or not.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: I think that continues on.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: Accountability of just self-control.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: To be clear, it's not about control, it's about protecting each other because we all know we're flawed.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: We all know that we have the ability to fall short and to make really bad mistakes without having someone to bounce those ideas off of.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: But I think it goes further than just the spiritual element as well.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: I think it also goes through the the physical and material as well, in terms of our goals.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: Do you have something set before you're like, oh, one day I'm gonna build that shed, or one day I'm going to build that sculpture, or finish that book, or I'm gonna finish that website that I talked about, or you're gonna build an app or whatever it might be, maybe working out is another thing.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: It could be your projects that you are thinking of, or a small business you're wanting to start, but your work in general, like how you want to be a better worker.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: I think those are all equally important as well as the other spiritual things that I think a lot of times accountability, we only think that far as Christians, a lot of times.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: It's just only thinking of basically the spiritual, but not necessarily the physical and also the material.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: And you want to have goals financially as well.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: I know that I have friends that we do that.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: We try, we usually, I don't know if it's at the beginning of the year or the mid-year, we say, we set down some goals and we write them out, and we see how we did later on.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: Okay, how do we do?
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: And sometimes it's a little disappointing.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: You're like, gosh, dude, you're slacking.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: And you need that honesty.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: You need to say, dude, you're getting fat, you need to work out, you're getting a little chubby, you're eating too much.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: I think it's great that your wife is feeding you, but don't eat all of it.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: Just have one portion, save some for others.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: And that's a very important element.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: The other one, number two, I would say, is encouragement.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: Every man becomes discouraged at some point.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: And with the world that wants to beat you down, because I think sadly, the world doesn't want success with other people.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: They look at it as a threat, not as a blessing.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: But in scripture, it talks about rejoice with those that rejoice and mourn with those that mourn.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: So when our friends do well and they get a blessing, I know sometimes this is even difficult for me from time to time because there's certain goals that I know my friends have achieved.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: It'd be like fatherhood, having kids.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: And I have a tendency to want to be envious of them.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: But I have to rejoice in the sense that thank God they're a godly father, and thank God that he has blessed them with children.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: I want my own children someday, but I can't have it where I feel bitter because my brother is doing well.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: It doesn't mean that God loves me less just because someone else is blessed in a way that I wish I was, but I'm having to keep working for it, or God's just not ready yet.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: Another thing, too, is that when it comes to encouragement, you have to also encourage one another like in faith.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: And what I mean by that is like you have there's gonna be times where like your faith might be stronger than your other friends.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: It might be that your faith might be stronger at certain times, or you might be more wiser in certain areas than other elements.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: You might have a better understanding of marriage or how to raise kids than someone else who's just starting.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: It could be finances that you have that wisdom to instill in someone else.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: Offer it, not in a obliterating way, but in a way of just, hey, I care about you.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: I I would this be helpful.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: Have you thought about this?
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: Celebrate the victories, help carry burdens as well.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: There's gonna be times where like you're gonna fail, your business is gonna fail, or it's gonna go under, you could lose your job, you could get laid off.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: It could be that your wife is upset with you, you're not doing well together in terms of the marriage.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: It could be that your wife is wanting to divorce you, it could be that she's wanting to leave you, she's done.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: And you might have to walk through that with your friend and how to deal with that.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: Sometimes one encouraging conversation keeps a man from giving up.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: It really does.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: I know there's been so many times in my own life where I've had, I'm like on the verge, like it's like I can't keep doing this.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: This is driving me nuts.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: It's it's sometimes it's been my job.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it's been like just past relationships that haven't been going well.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: And I just had that one word encouragement, or someone sent me a text at the right time because they were thinking about me.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: Hey, I'm praying for you.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: Here's a Bible verse for you to read that I think would it lift you or your soul up.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: Those are incredibly valuable more than we realize.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: The other element, number three, is it's kind of a duo because I couldn't, I had a hard time picking one word or the other, and that is honor and loyalty.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: I think those those two words are very honor, especially, I don't think is used very often.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: And I'm not talking about blind loyalty, I'm talking about the loyalty that you believe in the cause of your friendship and the goals of it in general.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: That even when you feel wronged, there's gonna be times in your friendships where you feel like you are wronged by someone, that you still say loyal to that person, not in the sense of like you have to be a doormat, but the idea that you love that person and you want to be there for them no matter what.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: I can't think, I think when I think of betrayal, I think of the scene in Braveheart, and spoiler if you have not seen it, of course, and that's when William Wallace is on the battlefield and he goes, This this rider like starts charging him, and William Wallace is charging back at him.
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: He knocks the other, he gets knocked off his horse, William Wallace, he falls on the ground, and then the soldier gets off his horse to check on him if he's dead, and then he takes the Wallace, gets up and like puts the knife to his throat, and he pulls the helmet off, and it ends up being Robert the Bruce.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: And the music and the look in his eyes is just your heart falls through the floor.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: You can feel the betrayal in William Wallace's eyes, and you can see the disappointment of Robert the Bruce and what he has done.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: And we have to be men of honor and loyalty with each other.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: It's not a game.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: Don't take friendship lightly, don't have your friendships be shallow.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: It doesn't get you anywhere.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: You can go beyond, you don't want to have it where your friendship talk is just like, how was your week?
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: Oh, it's good, and how is your work?
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: All right, yeah, how's the marriage?
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: Oh, the kids are great, and the wife's well.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: It's not gonna get below the layers of the onion, as Shrek would say.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: And number four would be brotherhood.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: Men long for genuine friendships, they do, but not in a gay way, okay?
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: But eat together, work together, do a project maybe in the backyard together, okay?
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: Pray for one another, send texts of encouragement, send a Bible verse here and there, check up on each other.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: I really do believe, and this is just how God has wired me.
- 19:31SPEAKER_00: When I think of a person and they're they come to mind, I really truly believe that's God telling me, like, hey, I should probably check on that person.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: Maybe they're going through something.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: And I cannot tell you how many times, I would say probably 90% of the time, they're like, dude, I've been just having a hard day.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: This happened, you wouldn't believe it.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: And just hearing your that you were thinking of me and you're praying for me, and you sent me this bioverse, it means a ton.
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: It means a ton.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: And take those moments, laugh with each other, be goofballs, have fun, go camping, enjoy hikes.
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: And with brotherhood, real friends tell the truth.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: You don't want to hear just someone just always telling you, you're great, man.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: You do everything great, you're awesome, you're amazing.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: And I really do believe I have friends that when they do compliment me, I do believe they mean it.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: I really do.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: And I think you need friends like that.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: I don't think we need friends that are just gonna always tell us what we want to hear, because that's not friendship to me.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: To me, that's just having someone that's always just gonna agree with you, and you don't grow from a friendship like that.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: I've had a friend since junior high, and we've sadly we've gone different sides of the spectrum.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: He was once a believer and now he doesn't believe in God and has become more liberal, where I've become more conservative.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: But yet somehow we still manage to become friends by God's grace.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: And I do appreciate his friendship because we clearly disagree on very strong topics.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: And I do pray that somehow through our friendship that that can be a testimony in and of itself.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: I don't want I don't know what God is gonna do with it in the end with my friend, but I still care for him, I still love him dearly as a brother.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: And but at the same time, I know that there's limitations for him and also myself to be able to express what we're thinking on certain topics because we're so different on how we approach life in different ways.
- 21:36SPEAKER_00: We do our best with what we have, but I also understand that I need friends that are going to believe in a biblical worldview as I do.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: It doesn't mean it's not valuable, but I understand that that's just how it is.
- 21:49SPEAKER_00: It's just a reality of things.
- 21:51SPEAKER_00: It's not necessarily trying to cut people off that might not be believers, but it's so important to have ones that see eye.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: To eye with not only your vision and understand where you're going in your life because the world's not going to understand.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: When you tell them, like, hey, I'm going to have it where my wife stays home and I'm going to work extra hard so that she doesn't have to.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: Why would you do that?
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: When do you want to make more money?
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: When do you want a bigger house?
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: Why would you quit that job and go do this one that pays less?
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: There are things that the world is not going to understand when you do it, but your Christian brothers will.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: Your Christian brothers will.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: So you need friends that are going to tell you the truth.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: You need ones that are going to correct lovingly and refuse to flatter.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: Honesty helps growth.
- 22:40SPEAKER_00: Speak biblical truth over cultural opinions, because that is all that the world seeks and adores.
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: The church should feel like family.
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: It should.
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: It should feel like family.
- 22:53SPEAKER_00: Like you are comfortable in your shoes, you know each other, you get each other's corks, your bad habits, your weaknesses, your strengths, and you guys capitalize on each other to grow in the various ways of where your weaknesses are their strengths, and their strengths are your weaknesses, and vice versa.
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: And you grow as a unit together.
- 23:13SPEAKER_00: And number five, you need wisdom.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: Older men should intentionally disciple younger men.
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: So, like older men that are listening to this, we need you.
- 23:23SPEAKER_00: We need more older men that are spiritually mature to step up and to look out over younger men and to guide them.
- 23:36SPEAKER_00: They need your wisdom when it comes to your marriage that you've had for so long, or a business that you have started, or how you've raised your kids.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: Young men need you more than ever.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: And I think what's sad is there's a lack of supply of older men being available to do this.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: I think partially that has to do with the ages being separated a lot.
- 24:00SPEAKER_00: I don't agree with it.
- 24:01SPEAKER_00: I think that the ages should be meshed together.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: The young need to learn from the older.
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: I mean, even with Indians in America, there's that element.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: There wasn't no separation of age groups.
- 24:13SPEAKER_00: It was like there was reverence of the elderly, and they learn from the elderly and they pass down different beliefs.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: And that's how it was.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: And the same should be no exception for the Christian church.
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: You need to talk to older men about marriage, raising children, finances, leadership, spiritual disciplines.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: Surround yourselves with older men that are going where you want to go.
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: It doesn't mean you can't have younger friends that are the same age, that are your peers.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: That's fine.
- 24:47SPEAKER_00: But they can only help you so far as their knowledge goes and their experience goes and their life experience as well.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: And that's where like older spiritual, strong men come into play and where you can learn.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: So I would encourage you men to find someone in church.
- 25:06SPEAKER_00: If the if there's a goal in your mind, like, okay, who has a good marriage?
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: Who has a good marriage?
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: Okay, Greg.
- 25:13SPEAKER_00: Greg has a great marriage.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: Okay, I'm gonna talk to him.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: He's been married for over 40 years now.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: So I'm gonna ask him, like, what makes their marriage successful that they've made it to 40 years?
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: Or it could be you talk to someone else, oh, there's there's Gary, he has that really great business.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: How did he start that?
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: Pick his brain, take him out to lunch, ask those questions.
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: He's very financially successful.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: How'd he do those things?
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: How'd he save up money?
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: How does he have these different rental properties?
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: Take advantage of those things.
- 25:39SPEAKER_00: And older men, be willing to be patient and share your knowledge to pass it down, your legacy that you have instilled in yourself into other people, besides even your own children.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: How amazing would that be?
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: And that's what Titus II says.
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: Let the older men disciple the younger.
- 25:58SPEAKER_00: It's very clear and super important and desperately needed in the church.
- 26:04SPEAKER_00: I know tons of men, they might not even think about it, but they need it.
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: And I would encourage the older men that might be listening, don't wait for the younger men to come to you.
- 26:14SPEAKER_00: Seek them out as well.
- 26:16SPEAKER_00: Just ask, hey, do you need any financial advice?
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: Or hey, do you need let's go out to lunch?
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: Let's talk about like your marriage or your kids.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: How's it going?
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: I think those are going to be some very positive things in your life.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: And number six, we have prayer.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: Christian men should pray with one another, not only for just the things in their life, but praying for each other.
- 26:46SPEAKER_00: And sometimes you can't always be with each other, but have it where you have those moments where you either have maybe once a week or once a day where you like just a quick call or a text or something like, hey, what can I pray for today?
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: How was your day today?
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: And take those moments to just breathe life into each other.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: Because there's going to be times where your spouse can't deliver everything.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: Your spouse can't do everything.
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: Your wife can't do everything.
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: And I think that God understands that.
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: And that's what friendships are for.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: There's things that you're going to need.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: Your guys are going to need other guys to have that strength to talk about things that they can't talk about with their wife.
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: And that's super valuable.
- 27:31SPEAKER_00: Start praying with one brother maybe every week, or and just watch how your relationships deepen as well.
- 27:39SPEAKER_00: There's something about prayer in general, not only just in like I sense it in my own marriage that we pray every day with each other, but it really does, it takes the focus off of ourselves, it puts it back on God.
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: It gives a sense of spiritual connection and devotion to each other and honor and loyalty to not only each other, but to God, first and foremost, and so important.
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: And I think some men strive in this area of prayer, and some like need to cultivate it more.
- 28:09SPEAKER_00: And it's just all about practice, like everything else.
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: You the more you do it, the more it's like you realize five minutes becomes 10 minutes, and 10 minutes becomes 20 and 30 and 40.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: And then pretty sure and you realize, wow, I prayed for like a whole hour.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: It's completely like that.
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: It's like a muscle that you must flex and you must nurture it the same way you would in doing so many reps one day and then trying to do one more the next.
- 28:35SPEAKER_00: And that's the same with prayer itself.
- 28:37SPEAKER_00: Be mindful, make a list of prayer.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: And then at the same time, what's beautiful about that is you will see how God has answered those prayers over time.
- 28:46SPEAKER_00: Number seven is courage.
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: Courage spreads like a virus because guys love it.
- 28:54SPEAKER_00: I mean, come on, the guys get fired up when they see battle scenes or someone just going into battle with the odds all against them.
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: I saw I've been seeing a bunch of these different reels where it shows a movie clip from some epic battle scene with this guy, one last stand kind of mentality with this beautiful music surrounded.
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: And at the top it says, Women, I just want to be surrounded by my family when I die.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: And then it shows men, and then it shows like this guy, like just like hacking up all these bad guys or like taking out the evil on the world and fighting to the death for victory, glory, and honor.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: And that's how we are.
- 29:36SPEAKER_00: Why do we love the movies like Braveheart, Gladiator?
- 29:40SPEAKER_00: When you watch movies like Gettysburg and we see these amazing, larger-than-life characters that took on these amazing odds to do the right thing, even when they were standing alone.
- 29:51SPEAKER_00: You have Bonhoeffer and Jim Elliott, these men that you read of and you're like, wow, that's what I want to be.
- 29:59SPEAKER_00: And when one man stands for truth, others gain confidence.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: I'm so encouraged by my pastors because I know that they go through a lot of flack.
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: But I'll tell you one thing: I I they are not cowards.
- 30:15SPEAKER_00: They will say what needs to be said, and they will say the truth that needs to be said.
- 30:22SPEAKER_00: And they love their flock, and they will die for not only just their families, but I know they would die for me because that's how much they care about me.
- 30:31SPEAKER_00: That's the type of courage we need.
- 30:33SPEAKER_00: You need to have pastors that have the courage, the willingness to be hated by the rest of the world, to not hear the praise of man, to not care what the world thinks of us, but care what God thinks of us.
- 30:47SPEAKER_00: And families benefit from that.
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: Churches become stronger as a result of courage.
- 30:53SPEAKER_00: Because a lot of times you're the leader.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: And if you didn't have someone like George Washington to lead with courage or William Wallace, his men never would have gotten off the ground.
- 31:08SPEAKER_00: They wouldn't have gotten to the ground.
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: So you think of these men that are just larger than life.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: Well, if they never took the risk themselves and gave everyone, it's this mentality that once you see someone do what you're like, oh wow, I can't believe he just said that.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: And he's right.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: I need to do that too.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: I need to get more involved in politics.
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: I need to get involved with my community more.
- 31:35SPEAKER_00: I need to care about what my kids are being taught in school, and it spreads.
- 31:41SPEAKER_00: Courage is a great parasite, and it just feeds off of the victories that come from it, it just feeds off of it, and it's amazing.
- 31:52SPEAKER_00: And then we have number eight, which is humility.
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: This is a tough one because I work in the trades, and I tell you, the egos are huge, they're very big.
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: And I was talking to one of my coworkers, and he's and he was like, Jamin, I think you're just too nice.
- 32:08SPEAKER_00: You're not much of an a-hole, as he told me.
- 32:12SPEAKER_00: And I was like, Yeah, you're probably right.
- 32:14SPEAKER_00: And I tell you, a lot of these guys in the trade, they've been through a lot of tough toughness in their life.
- 32:19SPEAKER_00: A lot of them have been divorced because of the long hours that they work.
- 32:24SPEAKER_00: They've lost family, they lost their kids.
- 32:26SPEAKER_00: A lot of them I've talked to, I would say, gosh, probably 90% of the ones I talk to have all been divorced.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: And it's sad.
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: And they're very tough men because they've been through a lot of tough things.
- 32:37SPEAKER_00: And sometimes hurt people hurt others.
- 32:40SPEAKER_00: They don't have patience or kindness for anyone else.
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: And sometimes it's difficult for me to have humility and just to not want to lash out towards these men when they're impatient or I made a mistake and they just have no ability to have any grace.
- 32:57SPEAKER_00: But Christian men need brothers who remind them they aren't above correction as well.
- 33:04SPEAKER_00: And that includes myself.
- 33:06SPEAKER_00: Sometimes I just have to shut my mouth when I'm at work and realize, like, you know what?
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I might be in the right.
- 33:12SPEAKER_00: But do I really need to say something?
- 33:15SPEAKER_00: Do I really need to call that person out or throw them under the bus?
- 33:18SPEAKER_00: Is it really necessary?
- 33:21SPEAKER_00: It's very tempting sometimes, I think, to want to get even as well when someone makes you upset.
- 33:29SPEAKER_00: But humility is not the false idea.
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: If you do something well, like for instance, if you I don't know, let's say you're good at landscaping and your friends come over and it's a beautiful landscaped yard.
- 33:42SPEAKER_00: You did a great job.
- 33:43SPEAKER_00: And your friends are like, dude, this this yard looks fantastic.
- 33:47SPEAKER_00: You did an amazing job.
- 33:49SPEAKER_00: And you just go, oh, it's no big deal, no problem.
- 33:51SPEAKER_00: It's like, just take it in.
- 33:53SPEAKER_00: You don't have to be all boastful, like, yeah, man, I'm just the best.
- 33:55SPEAKER_00: It's like, no, just say, well, thank you.
- 33:57SPEAKER_00: I appreciate you saying that.
- 33:58SPEAKER_00: It took a lot of work and it came together well, and I'm really happy with it.
- 34:02SPEAKER_00: So I'm I thank you for noticing.
- 34:04SPEAKER_00: Sometimes, like, we have false humility, and that's not true.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: It's okay to acknowledge when it's like, hey, that was a good sermon.
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: I like that music that you wrote, or I enjoyed your book that I read.
- 34:16SPEAKER_00: Those things are you you don't have to have this false sense that you're being humble when you're not.
- 34:23SPEAKER_00: But humility is a tough one because, guys, it's everybody has pride.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: I don't care what sex you are, it comes in different forms, I think.
- 34:32SPEAKER_00: But for men, like I'll find like one that I've been trying to work on is trying to listen more in conversation, not just wait for the other person to stop talking so I can add my own two cents, but to really listen and observe what people are saying.
- 34:50SPEAKER_00: And I feel bad.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: There's times where I notice it myself.
- 34:52SPEAKER_00: I'm like, oh gosh, I'm doing it again.
- 34:54SPEAKER_00: I'm thinking about what I want to say, and I really need to listen to this person when I'm saying it.
- 34:58SPEAKER_00: And of course, I'm having this conversation when I'm looking at the person, which is even funny from my perspective, but not for them.
- 35:05SPEAKER_00: And people want to feel like they're valued and they're heard and have that humility to just shut up and just listen and just ask questions that they're interested in.
- 35:16SPEAKER_00: Sometimes, yeah, you might have you're at a party and they're at those conversations where you're like, this is so boring.
- 35:22SPEAKER_00: Try to relate to people, try to actually reach out in the sense of just showing there's some care that the person you who is talking to you is a human being.
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: Have that humility because I tell you, pride destroys friendships.
- 35:37SPEAKER_00: I've seen so many friendships like that have gone to the wayside for such peddly, stupid things that were not worth it.
- 35:46SPEAKER_00: And I've lost friendships and it's heartbreaking.
- 35:53SPEAKER_00: You wish that things didn't end the way they did.
- 35:56SPEAKER_00: You still love the person, but you realize though, at the same time, sometimes trust is broken, sometimes the hurt is so great that the other person can't get over it or move on.
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: They might be thinking of just themselves, and you just have to accept that.
- 36:15SPEAKER_00: Sometimes you cannot fix the person that is not willing to change, and there's no reason that you have to change them either.
- 36:26SPEAKER_00: And that's important to understand that because humility welcomes correction, and that's very important as well.
- 36:33SPEAKER_00: And I'm talking about when I there are friends that I have in my life since junior high, and one particular, he lives in San Diego.
- 36:42SPEAKER_00: And I have two friends that are in San Diego actually, and they're both like that.
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: They will bring up things in my life and say, Have you considered this?
- 36:50SPEAKER_00: Is this the best way to approach this?
- 36:52SPEAKER_00: Are you sure about this?
- 36:54SPEAKER_00: And I tell you, I appreciate it so much because I want friends that they understand where I'm coming from.
- 37:02SPEAKER_00: They're not always harsh.
- 37:03SPEAKER_00: There's some times where I pull a peter and I stick my mouth, I stick my foot in my mouth very easily because I let my passion get ahead of me at times.
- 37:14SPEAKER_00: And I appreciate those friends that are willing to say, you know what?
- 37:18SPEAKER_00: Probably shouldn't have said that.
- 37:20SPEAKER_00: You might want to take that post down.
- 37:23SPEAKER_00: The way you responded to this person probably wasn't the best.
- 37:26SPEAKER_00: You might want to go smooth things over with that person and make things right.
- 37:30SPEAKER_00: You need friends, humility is welcoming that correction.
- 37:34SPEAKER_00: And repentance is strength, it's not weakness.
- 37:38SPEAKER_00: To be shown clearly where you are wrong in life is the opportunity to become more knowledgeable in what is right.
- 37:47SPEAKER_00: And I think sometimes we hold on to the feeling like, well, if I admit that I'm wrong here, then I'm all wrong.
- 37:53SPEAKER_00: And it's really not the case.
- 37:55SPEAKER_00: It's just admitting that you're wrong in this area is just an opportunity to become more closely aligned to God's will and to be more biblical, especially.
- 38:05SPEAKER_00: And that's huge.
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: That's not a loss, that's a win.
- 38:09SPEAKER_00: Now, whenever someone feels that they're called out and they know they're wrong and they decide to buckle down, that's just your pride without having humility to realize, yeah, you were wrong in this area.
- 38:20SPEAKER_00: Admit it, accept it as a man does, grow from it.
- 38:26SPEAKER_00: And I think another thing you need is like a shared mission.
- 38:31SPEAKER_00: You need to surround yourself with men that have the same purpose because men need purpose beyond themselves, and you need to have friends that have very similar, not entirely the same goals, but they're always striving for the kingdom, and they want you to go with them.
- 38:50SPEAKER_00: It's like kind of like your band of brothers or David's mighty men.
- 38:55SPEAKER_00: You want to surround yourself with very eclectic people that have different skill sets, strengths, weaknesses, sense of humor, wisdom, quiet, loud.
- 39:07SPEAKER_00: You want to have all that in different capacity if you can, when you have a group of friends, because that just enriches your life to grow and see different perspectives on how they see things that you might have not seen or even thought of or even recognized.
- 39:23SPEAKER_00: And so, and some of those things could be of evangelism, it could be serving widows, mentoring the youth, discipling the youth, or it could be church ministry, community outreach, perhaps.
- 39:36SPEAKER_00: Of it could be like politics, getting people elected, and becoming more active in your school board, or possibly getting someone elected to city council.
- 39:46SPEAKER_00: Find people that have that goal set, that have that drive.
- 39:51SPEAKER_00: Because when you're around, it's kind of like having a bunch of friends that just smoke pot.
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: But you're not gonna go anywhere.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: It's just gonna be a smoke-filled room.
- 40:00SPEAKER_00: You're all gonna laugh at stupid stuff, and at the end of the day, nobody's the wiser, nobody's accomplished anything that's worth writing a letter about.
- 40:10SPEAKER_00: There's so many people in the secular world, they just have party friends, and their friendship is like, oh, it's funny.
- 40:16SPEAKER_00: That guy's funny, but he's really a fool.
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: There's nothing funny about him, it's just acting a fool, thinking he's wise when in reality he's looking like an idiot.
- 40:28SPEAKER_00: And you want to be around a group of guys that are going to be a shared mission, and it could also be that you all have a goal that you maybe all work on and you share different aspects of it in different ways.
- 40:42SPEAKER_00: It could be that.
- 40:43SPEAKER_00: And it could be also that you have different missions individually and you all encourage and sharpen each other to go in that direction and to finish it and accomplish it.
- 40:51SPEAKER_00: And that's huge for men today.
- 40:55SPEAKER_00: And brotherhood grows while serving together as well.
- 40:59SPEAKER_00: It's like that battle mentality of yeah, we went and evangelized here.
- 41:03SPEAKER_00: And do you remember what happened there?
- 41:04SPEAKER_00: We went and we put out flyers and we got so-and-so elected.
- 41:09SPEAKER_00: That was an amazing time, wasn't it?
- 41:11SPEAKER_00: Let's just see if we can get someone else elected.
- 41:13SPEAKER_00: Those things are huge, and it just creates a stronger bond that capitalizes on each other like a brick wall.
- 41:21SPEAKER_00: Each layer, the wall just gets stronger and stronger, and it's so vital.
- 41:27SPEAKER_00: And so the other one, the last one, number 10, is illness.
- 41:31SPEAKER_00: The greatest gift a Christian man can give another is consistency.
- 41:37SPEAKER_00: There's to Pilgrim's Progress, he has his friend Faithful that he meets in the Valley of the Shadow of Death.
- 41:44SPEAKER_00: And it gets to the point where he ends up going to be burnt at the stake to allow Christian more time to escape.
- 41:54SPEAKER_00: And he's a faithful friend to the very end.
- 41:58SPEAKER_00: And that's the type of friend that you want.
- 42:01SPEAKER_00: You want a friend that's going to be consistent in encouraging you, asking you the hard questions, to not be afraid that of what you think when he tells you what you don't want to hear.
- 42:13SPEAKER_00: Just be the man who shows up.
- 42:17SPEAKER_00: Mean what you say.
- 42:19SPEAKER_00: Keep your word.
- 42:21SPEAKER_00: Answer the phone.
- 42:23SPEAKER_00: Respond to that text.
- 42:26SPEAKER_00: You can't be a friend that just disappears when it gets difficult.
- 42:30SPEAKER_00: And sometimes it's difficult in the friendship.
- 42:32SPEAKER_00: You have to make things right because there's like a falling out or whatever, or there's a misunderstanding.
- 42:38SPEAKER_00: And try your best to work at that.
- 42:43SPEAKER_00: Because once you've worked that many hours and that much time with another individual, if you give up so easily, you got to realize what else are you throwing out just because maybe this one time something's off.
- 42:57SPEAKER_00: Now, granted, yeah, if there's not forgiveness and repentance and reconciliation, then there's an even bigger problem.
- 43:03SPEAKER_00: And it might have to go through the elders of the church.
- 43:06SPEAKER_00: But it's super important to not be so quick to just give up once there's something off or wrong.
- 43:15SPEAKER_00: Faithfulness builds lifelong trust as well.
- 43:19SPEAKER_00: It has to.
- 43:22SPEAKER_00: And the other thing is who is sharpening your faith for the listeners out there.
- 43:29SPEAKER_00: Who is sharpening your faith?
- 43:31SPEAKER_00: Who knows your struggles?
- 43:34SPEAKER_00: What you deal with, what becomes difficult in your faith, what steers you away from where you know you should be?
- 43:41SPEAKER_00: Who can comfort you when you are drifting and give you the proper words of encouragement that you need to hear?
- 43:51SPEAKER_00: Who are you investing in as well?
- 43:54SPEAKER_00: It's very easy that we are such a consumer culture in Christianity today that we expect everyone.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: Everyone to come to us, but we make no effort to go to anyone else because we're the center of attention.
- 44:07SPEAKER_00: And guys, you can't do that.
- 44:09SPEAKER_00: You have to put in the work.
- 44:12SPEAKER_00: Don't wait for Christian brotherhood to happen.
- 44:15SPEAKER_00: Be the man who initiates it.
- 44:17SPEAKER_00: Invite someone to breakfast.
- 44:20SPEAKER_00: Start a small Bible study.
- 44:23SPEAKER_00: Pray with another believer.
- 44:26SPEAKER_00: Encourage one man this week that needs it.
- 44:29SPEAKER_00: Probably more than you realize.
- 44:32SPEAKER_00: Guys are getting beat up on every single front.
- 44:36SPEAKER_00: And they need other friends to pull their swords out and fight in the battle with them and not leave them hanging.
- 44:47SPEAKER_00: The church becomes stronger when Christian men stop walking alone.
- 44:51SPEAKER_00: And you can't do it on your own.
- 44:52SPEAKER_00: You just can't.
- 44:53SPEAKER_00: It's impossible.
- 44:55SPEAKER_00: Without my friends, there is just no way.
- 44:58SPEAKER_00: There is just no way I could become the man that I am if I didn't have the amazing men throughout my life in various different ways, young and old, to pour into my life and to tell me how I can do better and how I can become more a man of God.
- 45:16SPEAKER_00: And I tell you, just those little words of encouragement that I get from them, it's the drop in my tank that can go for 500 miles.
- 45:24SPEAKER_00: I tell you.
- 45:26SPEAKER_00: And we need that.
- 45:27SPEAKER_00: We need that as men.
- 45:29SPEAKER_00: And I hope that this just motivates you.
- 45:34SPEAKER_00: If you don't have someone like that, it doesn't mean they're gonna have all these characteristics per se.
- 45:40SPEAKER_00: All 10.
- 45:42SPEAKER_00: And some might have more of these characteristics than others, but it needs to be sought after, it needs to be cultivated.
- 45:50SPEAKER_00: It's important more than we realize.
- 45:52SPEAKER_00: And the enemy wants us to be alone, the enemy wants us to be isolated, they want us to not succeed.
- 46:00SPEAKER_00: And we succeed together more than we succeed separate.
- 46:05SPEAKER_00: And I believe that with all my heart.
- 46:08SPEAKER_00: And I know that the battle is tough out there, gentlemen.
- 46:13SPEAKER_00: There are so many things that are on your shoulders, finances, your family, how to survive.
- 46:19SPEAKER_00: You're just trying to make ends meet.
- 46:23SPEAKER_00: But when you have friends that are able to say the words that you need to hear at the right moment, or friend that is willing to pray at the moment, you text them and say, Hey, I need a prayer right now.
- 46:36SPEAKER_00: I need deliverance from this and this, that they're gonna go to war with you.
- 46:42SPEAKER_00: They will be in your foxhole to the end, they will die by your side through your victories and defeats, not just when you're riding high on a cloud, but they will be there when you're in the lowest valleys.
- 46:54SPEAKER_00: That is true brotherhood, and that is true friendship.
- 47:01SPEAKER_00: I thank you all for tuning in.
- 47:04SPEAKER_00: I hope you are encouraged by this and not discouraged.
