- 1:43Welcome to the podcast, everybody.
- 1:44I'm Darren Hayes, your host.
- 1:45And boy, we had some great history that was made in Week 7 of the NFL season.
- 1:50First of all, the first game ever in France, an NFL game played there.
- 1:54And the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New Orleans Saints did not have the fans disappointed.
- 1:59They had a great game going on over there.
- 2:00We had some great rushing records, we had some historic upsets, we had some great comebacks and more.
- 2:06And we're going to talk about it with our friend Ed Cleese here in just a moment.
- 2:12How much you want to make a bet I can throw a football over the Eiffel Tower?
- 2:15Yeah, if coach would have put me.
- 2:17In during that Paris game.
- 2:29Ed, welcome back to the Pig Pen.
- 2:30Hey, Darren, how are you?
- 2:31Ed?
- 2:32I'm doing great.
- 2:32It's a great time to be an NFL fan.
- 2:35And we had some really exciting games and some.
- 2:37A lot of fun going on in the NFL this week.
- 2:40So what do you think here?
- 2:41Sure.
- 2:42Well, we'll start with a fan base that probably didn't think it was very fun.
- 2:45In your division, that would be your favorite team, the Baltimore Ravens.
- 2:49So you probably weren't shedding too many tears about this.
- 2:52You know, the, the, the.
- 2:54One of the criticisms of the John Harbaugh teams in recent years was their second half collapses, their late game collapses.
- 3:02Well, it looks like maybe it wasn't all Harbaugh's fault because after last week blowing a lead, this, this two weeks ago, blowing weed, this past week against the Bengals, the Ravens became the first team since 1950 to be
- 3:18leading a game by 13 or more at the half and losing it by 20 or more.
- 3:26Wow.
- 3:26Since 1950, you said it's happened.
- 3:28It's happened three times in history.
- 3:31One was obviously Sunday.
- 3:33And 1941, it happened.
- 3:35And also in 1950.
- 3:36So not the first time to blow a 13 point lead at half, of course, but to then have it turn all the way into a 20 plus point loss, well, that is.
- 3:46That's more amazing than what I had on this game.
- 3:48I'm sitting there, you know, look, we looked up, you know, the Bengals were shut out in that first half and they scored 35 in the second half.
- 3:57That hasn't happened since 2022 when the Vikings did it.
- 4:00They scored 39 against the Colts.
- 4:03I remember that Colts game.
- 4:04That was.
- 4:05Yeah, that was that.
- 4:06I remember that.
- 4:06It was a Saturday afternoon, I believe.
- 4:08I remember that game.
- 4:08Yeah, it could have been.
- 4:10Yeah.
- 4:10Yeah.
- 4:11We can stay in your division and we can talk about your team.
- 4:14Okay.
- 4:15Suddenly hot now I.
- 4:16Two questions for you.
- 4:18Technically speaking, and if you go to Pro Football Reference, it says that that is the Steel Steelers at the Saints.
- 4:25But I don't really consider that a game on the road, do you?
- 4:31So far, I think The Steelers have 17 home games scheduled this.
- 4:35This year, so.
- 4:37Gotcha.
- 4:37Steeler Nation's everywhere.
- 4:39Yes, it really is.
- 4:40So I.
- 4:41So we're gonna pretend that that was a neutral site game, which is of course what it really is.
- 4:46And so the.
- 4:47The Steelers technically broke their losing streak in New Orleans.
- 4:51Did you know they haven't actually won in New Orleans since 1990?
- 4:56So that's going back quite a ways.
- 4:59And here's a little trivia question for you.
- 5:01So, so much for being called the Big Easy.
- 5:03Geez.
- 5:04Yeah, exactly.
- 5:04Now, they haven't played a whole lot down there, to be honest, during like that eight year rolling schedule.
- 5:10So it's not a lot, but they haven't won in, you know, over 35 years down there.
- 5:15So in that game in 1990.
- 5:17Here's a trivia question for us, if you can piece it together.
- 5:20All right, One person scored for the Steelers in that game.
- 5:24Only one.
- 5:25And only one person scored for the Saints in that game.
- 5:28Only one.
- 5:29They had the same last name.
- 5:33Let's see if you can piece this together.
- 5:36The Steelers won the Game, 1990.
- 5:38Well, maybe it would be the Barr brothers.
- 5:42No, close.
- 5:43It was.
- 5:44Well, they aren't brothers.
- 5:45Morton Anderson kicked two field goals for the Saints and Gary Anderson kicked three field goals for the Steelers.
- 5:56The final was nine to six.
- 5:58Ah, okay.
- 5:59All right.
- 5:59So, yeah, I should have known that one.
- 6:02There, there's that one.
- 6:04If you would like to stay in the division, I've got a Browns note for you.
- 6:07So the, the Browns.
- 6:09Well, before we jump off that Steelers game, let's talk a little bit because there was some history made in that game.
- 6:14Okay.
- 6:14Okay.
- 6:15So first of all, you know, they made it extremely obvious that Aaron Rodgers surpassed Peyton Manning for touchdown passes and for a career.
- 6:24So that's.
- 6:24That's pretty big milestone when you go through that.
- 6:26So I think he's like number three or something now in the NFL history.
- 6:31The other thing is maybe people don't know Aaron Rodgers was the first starting quarterback to win in two foreign countries that had never had football before.
- 6:42Okay, so yeah, it's Ireland and France.
- 6:44Now, two of them international.
- 6:46International.
- 6:47Aaron, who really, clearly didn't really want to be there, so.
- 6:50Well, he was, he was a little bit miffed because they didn't go earlier like New Orleans did.
- 6:54They flew In Friday.
- 6:55Yes.
- 6:56Didn't get enough time to sightsee or something I guess.
- 6:59Certainly not shy about sharing his opinions on just about anything.
- 7:02True.
- 7:03And so the opinions about desean Watson might be changing because the Cleveland Browns now are off to their.
- 7:11They have tied their best start since they've moved back to or I moved back, however you want to say it.
- 7:18Since the franchise was reborn in 1999.
- 7:22This is their tied for their best seven game start at 5 and 2.
- 7:26Last time they did it was in 2020.
- 7:29So their fans weren't really able to enjoy it all that much that year.
- 7:33And they did make the playoffs that year as you well know.
- 7:35They made the playoffs that year because they knocked the Steelers out of the playoffs.
- 7:40So yeah, good start for the Browns.
- 7:42Yeah, they're playing well.
- 7:44DeSean Watson seems to have that little bit magic at the end was he have like four or five comebacks drives on him so that they're doing good.
- 7:52Good for the Browns fans.
- 7:53I believe every single one of their wins.
- 7:55He has had a game winning drive towards the end.
- 7:57Yeah, I think you're right.
- 7:59Yep.
- 8:00So moving on to the Big Apple.
- 8:03You know this is not something that I dug up because this is.
- 8:06This has been a viral statistic that has gone around this week.
- 8:10So I'm not really uncovering much here but I do think we need to talk about it because it's, it's really mind boggling.
- 8:17Aaron Glenn now has only been the coach for the jets for one season and I guess that's what, six games or seven games?
- 8:24I'm sorry.
- 8:26They have been outscored in the final two minutes of the first half in his very short tenure, 107 to 6.
- 8:37That is amazing.
- 8:39That is like.
- 8:40I don't, I looked at, I don't even know how, how do you give up that many points in the last two minutes of the first half, first of all.
- 8:47And then how do you only manage six?
- 8:50That is game altering probably almost every time when you're, you know, you're, when you're giving up those points like that there.
- 8:58Yeah.
- 8:58So minus 99 point differential in the last two minutes of the first half.
- 9:04In the very brief time that Aaron Glenn has been coached and if he keeps that up we.
- 9:08He will be their former coach.
- 9:11Yeah.
- 9:11Especially you know, you even.
- 9:13Do you think offensively, you know, only scoring six points.
- 9:17They have had some of the highest draft picks of any NFL team for ages and you would think they would, you know, have something established there on offense so you know somebody that they could count on to at
- 9:30least score a touchdown or two, you know, in the last 20 some games.
- 9:34Amazing.
- 9:35Yeah.
- 9:35And they've had some good offensive performances this year too, actually.
- 9:40So it's a little.
- 9:41But it's a little crazy.
- 9:41So that points to your game management, clock management just being able to close out halves, games, quarters.
- 9:48It's.
- 9:48It's bad.
- 9:49So basically coaching.
- 9:50Coaching.
- 9:51Okay.
- 9:52All right, in summary.
- 9:53In summary.
- 9:54Well, we can, we can stay in New York and talk about coaching if you want.
- 9:58Because the New York Giants are now off to their best start in a decade.
- 10:03The last time they were this, this started this well was 2016.
- 10:07They went 4 and 3 in 2016.
- 10:09So this is actually a slightly better start than that at 4, 2 and 1.
- 10:12The Giants, they haven't, you know, they've, they've.
- 10:15Their four wins are against teams with losing records and significant losing records, but you can only play who's on your schedule.
- 10:24And last week, regardless of the, the fact that the Texans have a poor record, that was still a pretty impressive win.
- 10:30And I'm sure Giants fans are going to enjoy their, their upcoming bye week.
- 10:35Yeah, I'm.
- 10:36I'm sure they will.
- 10:37And somebody else that may enjoy that is Malik Neighbors.
- 10:41You know, he had 111 yards in that game.
- 10:43That makes it his fourth straight game with 100 yards receiving.
- 10:48And that hasn't happened for a New York Giants since Odell Beckham did it back in 2015.
- 10:53So it's been a while since Giants fans have enjoyed some offensive receiving threats.
- 10:59You know, he's a special player.
- 11:00He's a special player.
- 11:01Definitely is.
- 11:03Well, talking about a special player that was not very special in this last game is the 20 to 3 loss by the Chiefs in Seattle on Sunday night.
- 11:12That marks the.
- 11:13That ties for the lowest output of Mahomes's career in terms of points on the board.
- 11:19He matched that in 2021 against the Titans.
- 11:23The Chiefs got down 27 to nothing, I think at the half.
- 11:26And the final was 273 in a season where they're.
- 11:30Otherwise their offense was kind of lighting it up, but they had one bad day.
- 11:34But this is one of Patrick Mahomes worst games of his career, statistically.
- 11:40Yeah, I mean the.
- 11:41For the Kansas City Chiefs with the explosive offense that we witnessed the first five games, six games, you know, running through everybody, passing through everybody, didn't even make a trip to the red zone.
- 11:54That tells you how good Seattle played defense on Sunday night.
- 11:58That's just an amazing stat to shut that offense down.
- 12:02The way that they did.
- 12:04Kudos to Seattle.
- 12:05Yes.
- 12:06Right now Seattle is sort of winning in spite of their offense.
- 12:10Yeah, very true, very true.
- 12:11Not the only team in the league that's doing that by the way.
- 12:14Minnesota.
- 12:16Yeah, let's talk a little bit about Minnesota.
- 12:18Boy.
- 12:19So now they are the only undefeated team left in the NFL.
- 12:22Who, who would have thought that, you know, way back when before the season started.
- 12:27No, no, I think they were a bit of a sneaky people respect Brian Flores and you know, you know they did win their last five games of the year last year.
- 12:35So this is an 11 game winning streak now for the Vikings with four different quarterbacks.
- 12:40I think now that.
- 12:42Which is.
- 12:42Yeah.
- 12:43Which is pretty.
- 12:43Which is pretty wild.
- 12:44So no, I don't think anybody.
- 12:46I think people, some people thought, myself included, they could be like, maybe like a sneaky back end wild card kind of team.
- 12:52But Yeah, I mean they're 6, 0 and it's funny, I don't think anybody believes in them yet, including maybe some of their own fans.
- 12:59So they're.
- 13:00They're being doubted maybe a little bit like the Colts last year.
- 13:03So we'll see if they suffer a similar fate.
- 13:06Yeah, we'll see if Cinderella can keep that slipper on to go through.
- 13:10They've got a pretty tough schedule of in division opponents coming up here the next few weeks.
- 13:16So the challenge is on.
- 13:18Let's, let's see how they go.
- 13:19Come through that.
- 13:20Yes, sir.
- 13:22Yeah.
- 13:22So some great history here and we really enjoy you coming on here and sharing this history with us.
- 13:28Seems like every week we've had some really good history on it.
- 13:31And one feature that we love talking about with you that you came up with, we'd love to hear about the Scoragami index from week seven.
- 13:39The Scoragami index.
- 13:41So as we know, let's.
- 13:43First we'll start with our little trivia.
- 13:45Darren, what is your selection?
- 13:49As.
- 13:49What do you think was our.
- 13:51We did not have a score gummy last week, but we had one that was somewhat close.
- 13:55So what final score from last week do you think was the most rare?
- 13:59I think I got this one.
- 14:01Okay.
- 14:01I think the Tampa Bay Carolina game, 43 to 13.
- 14:05That seems it's got to be pretty rare.
- 14:08Winner.
- 14:08Winner.
- 14:09You got that one.
- 14:09This might be.
- 14:10Is this the first time you've gotten one?
- 14:12Good job.
- 14:12Yeah.
- 14:13Yeah.
- 14:13I'm one out of eight.
- 14:14Yeah.
- 14:14Or good job.
- 14:15Well, you nailed it.
- 14:16You nailed it.
- 14:16And really the only one, the only other one that was kind of semi close was the Falcons beating the 49ers 29 to 20.
- 14:24That's only happened 13 times.
- 14:25But it only happened five times, the 43 to 13 final with the Bucks over the.
- 14:33Panthers.
- 14:35So.
- 14:35But interesting note on that.
- 14:37The first time of the five times it ever happened was in 1952.
- 14:42It was the Dallas Texans at the Detroit Lions.
- 14:47The Lions won the game 43 to 13.
- 14:52Do you know what's significant about what I just said there though, Darren?
- 14:56The Dallas Texans who became.
- 14:59Well, let's see.
- 15:00That Dallas Texans would have been the team that got disbanded and eventually became the original Baltimore Colts.
- 15:08Well, yes, I don't think.
- 15:10I don't even in the record books, the Dallas Texans, this Dallas Texans only existed for one season.
- 15:16They were the.
- 15:17They.
- 15:17They were.
- 15:17They played one single season in the NFL after the New York Yanks folded.
- 15:23And though they started the Dallas Texans, it must not have gone very well in Dallas for very long, Darren.
- 15:28No, because by the middle of the late part of that season, they were playing in other cities.
- 15:34As a matter of fact, their only win in their franchise history, as it would turn out, came against the Bears.
- 15:40They beat them in the Rubber bowl in Akron, Ohio.
- 15:43So the Dallas Texans beat the Chicago Bears in 1952 in Akron, Ohio.
- 15:49Well, but think about that for a second.
- 15:51So 1952, think about where the NFL was.
- 15:54The NFL was east of the Mississippi, north of the Mason Dixon line, except for the Redskins, really.
- 16:00Right.
- 16:01So that.
- 16:02So the Dallas Texans were pretty remote to all the rest of the teams.
- 16:07I think that was played a part into it and they were sort of, you know, thrown out there to the wolves.
- 16:14Like you said, it was disbanded New York Yanks team and it hovered.
- 16:20That's connected to the Baltimore Colts, but it's not the Baltimore Colts that became the Indianapolis Colts.
- 16:24Right.
- 16:25We did a special on that with Larry Schmidt a few years ago and it's.
- 16:28It's kind of a wild history how that Colts history all came about.
- 16:32Yeah, yeah.
- 16:33I think in the early 50s, the world, probably the US probably just wasn't quite ready for that NFL expansion.
- 16:39And then when we get into the 60s, when we have the NFL and the AFL going is when I think the light bulb kind of turned on.
- 16:46So those poor Dallas Texans were just a little ahead of their time, before their time.
- 16:50Yeah, that's true.
- 16:52So we did have, Darren, the most common score of all time happen again this last past week.
- 16:58So the most common score is 20 to 17.
- 17:00Of course, that has now happened 304 times in NFL history.
- 17:06It has happened twice so far this year.
- 17:08Both times involving the Green Bay Packers.
- 17:11They beat the jets earlier this year, 2017, and this past week they lost to the Lions 20 to 17.
- 17:17Overall.
- 17:18Darren, we had a very common week of scores because our score gummy index was 80.14, which puts it easily as our most common week of the season so far.
- 17:30Yeah, boy, that's a, that's a really high score compared to what we were having early on.
- 17:34So.
- 17:34Yep.
- 17:35Yeah, Amazing, amazing job.
- 17:36Once again, that's got a.
- 17:38Be a difficult thing to do to get all those scores in there.
- 17:41Oh, yes.
- 17:41Yeah.
- 17:42Well, you know, it's a, it's one of the many rabbit holes, Darren.
- 17:46I'm sure you have to take your shoes off on that one.
- 17:48Yes, I do.
- 17:50All right, Ed.
- 17:51Well, I think that wraps up our history for the week seven for the NFL.
