Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Well, we swapped Ozzie flat Whites for a proper British
- 0:05Speaker 1: brew this weekend and witness history made heartbreak and a
- 0:09Speaker 1: whole lot of hard racing at the British Grand Prix.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Moto GP Pittook is brought to you by Shannon's Insurance.
- 0:15Speaker 1: I'm your host, Rinita Vmuellen, and adjoining me is Moto
- 0:18Speaker 1: GP's very own walking encyclopedia and a bloke who's probably
- 0:22Speaker 1: still recovering from a shock of sunshine at Silverstone on Sunday,
- 0:27Speaker 1: Matt Clayton.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Matt, we were talking off air and we're like, we have.
- 0:31Speaker 1: To hit record and get started, because can you believe
- 0:35Speaker 1: the highs and the lows at the British Grand Prix.
- 0:38Speaker 1: What a weekend for the West start of the Heizo
- 0:41Speaker 1: are Prillier Mmm.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Of all the things that we could have been talking
- 0:46Speaker 3: about to lead this podcast after where we left it
- 0:48Speaker 3: last week with turmoil at a Prillier and Joge Martin
- 0:52Speaker 3: wants to leave and are they going to let him leave?
- 0:54Speaker 3: And there's no future in this project, but you know
- 0:57Speaker 3: you had the random element of Silverstone we talked about
- 0:59Speaker 3: this last week. The previous ten installments of this Grand
- 1:02Speaker 3: Prix had ten different winners. Let's just extend that to
- 1:05Speaker 3: eleven Grand Prix and eleven different winners because out of
- 1:08Speaker 3: absolutely nowhere, having finished in the top six once the
- 1:12Speaker 3: entire year, Marco Berseki wins his fourth Grand Prix. But
- 1:15Speaker 3: an amazing culmination of events, which we'll get into through
- 1:19Speaker 3: this podcast. But for a Prillia where you've got the
- 1:23Speaker 3: world champion that you moved heaven and earth to sign
- 1:25Speaker 3: last year, getting cold feet, not even having done one
- 1:28Speaker 3: race in the project, and now you can turn around
- 1:30Speaker 3: and say, by the way, this bike can win a
- 1:32Speaker 3: Grand Prix. So anytime you'd like to throw your leg
- 1:34Speaker 3: over one and not fall off, then be our guest.
- 1:36Speaker 3: But great news for Aprilia, fantastic for Bozeki. But how
- 1:41Speaker 3: we got there? It was a suitably wacky British Grand
- 1:45Speaker 3: Prix with so many variables. But I don't even know
- 1:47Speaker 3: where you're going to start. There's about one hundred different
- 1:49Speaker 3: options year I.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Want to start with.
- 1:52Speaker 1: And I don't want to take anything away from Marco
- 1:55Speaker 1: Bedzeki because you could clearly tell that he was on
- 1:58Speaker 1: fire from the first race start after the red flag
- 2:02Speaker 1: and on the second race start. But The thing that
- 2:05Speaker 1: caught my attention was Masimo Rivela and his comments to
- 2:09Speaker 1: the press after of hey, jo hey Martin, look at this,
- 2:14Speaker 1: our bite can win with all that off track drama
- 2:17Speaker 1: that we've had. And then Marco Bezeki goes and wins
- 2:20Speaker 1: and he's on fire and he had that helmet and
- 2:23Speaker 1: a mullet. On the weekend, it.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Just seemed like all the door opened up.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Lady Luck was on Marco's side, right, But like I said,
- 2:31Speaker 1: he was on fire. I don't know, if you're watching
- 2:32Speaker 1: the lap times, Mark, You're not Mark, you're Matt. But well,
- 2:38Speaker 1: he started tenth on the grid. I think at one
- 2:40Speaker 1: point on the first lap he was back down in
- 2:42Speaker 1: like nineteenth or something. Then next minute you see him,
- 2:45Speaker 1: he's like fifth or sixth, and he's second and he's
- 2:48Speaker 1: leading the Grand Prix. Whatever happened, whatever it was this
- 2:52Speaker 1: shift this weekend, because going into it it did really
- 2:55Speaker 1: look like it was Alex Marquez who was going to
- 2:58Speaker 1: be the favorite after the sprint win on Saturday.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Something clicked to micro Betzeki and he made it work.
- 3:04Speaker 3: I mean, look, Aprilia has got four around here. We
- 3:06Speaker 3: know that it's been a good track for them in
- 3:08Speaker 3: the past, Faverick Vinille's on the podium, Malesias Spargo won
- 3:10Speaker 3: a race there. So to see a Prillia being stronger
- 3:14Speaker 3: here than maybe anywhere for the rest of the season
- 3:16Speaker 3: so far, that wasn't the thing that surprised me. It
- 3:18Speaker 3: was more that it was Bazeki because he's been kind
- 3:21Speaker 3: of captain anonymous most of the time since he's been
- 3:23Speaker 3: at Aprillier. There's been so much discussion about the guy
- 3:26Speaker 3: who's supposed to be his teammate who hasn't been there.
- 3:29Speaker 3: And then early in the season, you remember the Aprillia
- 3:30Speaker 3: that was getting all the publicity was Agura because of
- 3:33Speaker 3: how awesome he was entire Land in his first race,
- 3:35Speaker 3: And so Marco's kind of existed under the raidar. He's
- 3:38Speaker 3: had a couple of races where he's been in okay
- 3:40Speaker 3: positions and he's run off into breaking zones and trundled
- 3:43Speaker 3: around at the back. But he's one of those guys
- 3:45Speaker 3: that we saw it in twenty twenty three when he
- 3:47Speaker 3: won those three Grand Prix and he was in the
- 3:50Speaker 3: thick of the championship fight till pretty late in the season.
- 3:53Speaker 3: His sweet Spots is sort of quite narrow, I reckon,
- 3:56Speaker 3: but when he gets in it, he is almost unbe
- 4:00Speaker 3: He just goes into this trance where he's just churning
- 4:02Speaker 3: out one lap after another after another. The most telling
- 4:06Speaker 3: sign to me about how good he was at Silverstone
- 4:08Speaker 3: was listening to Jean Zako afterwards he finished second, which
- 4:11Speaker 3: we'll get into, and Zarko's whole point was, I know
- 4:15Speaker 3: when Marco's in this sort of mood that it's almost
- 4:18Speaker 3: pointless fighting with him because you're not going to win
- 4:20Speaker 3: that fight. But so I elected just to try and
- 4:24Speaker 3: sit behind him and copy what he was doing, because
- 4:26Speaker 3: he was so fast, he was probably going to drag
- 4:28Speaker 3: me away from the others if I was able to
- 4:31Speaker 3: lock him behind him and just ride his lines. And
- 4:33Speaker 3: I thought that was really interesting from someone like Zarko,
- 4:35Speaker 3: who doesn't take defeat very easily or very well. But
- 4:38Speaker 3: he recognized, all right, I know when I'm beaten for
- 4:41Speaker 3: a win, but this guy's so good today with this
- 4:44Speaker 3: bike in this package, that he can actually help me
- 4:46Speaker 3: if I just play this smart here. And that's the
- 4:48Speaker 3: biggest sign of respect for a guy who is just
- 4:50Speaker 3: in that really narrow sweet spot but making everything work.
- 4:53Speaker 3: And you mentioned the sprint, like Buzeki was really good
- 4:56Speaker 3: in the sprint as well. He didn't get on the
- 4:58Speaker 3: podium there, but you could see that pace. It's like,
- 5:00Speaker 3: all right, how's this going to translate over a full
- 5:04Speaker 3: Grand Prix distance? Once we eventually got to a full
- 5:06Speaker 3: Grand Prix distance after the aborted start and all the
- 5:09Speaker 3: silliness on the first two laps, which we'll talk about,
- 5:11Speaker 3: the key thing for the whole weekend, and I wrote
- 5:13Speaker 3: a pretty significant piece of Fox Sports what is it
- 5:17Speaker 3: Tuesday morning Australian Time on you were there? It was
- 5:21Speaker 3: cold on Sunday, properly cold. I know it's ten days
- 5:24Speaker 3: before summer in the UK, but it was fifteen degree
- 5:26Speaker 3: ambient temperature. And the key point of the race was
- 5:31Speaker 3: there were eight riders who started on the soft front tire,
- 5:34Speaker 3: which you would never use a soft rount tire at
- 5:36Speaker 3: Silverston normally because the high speed corners had just chew
- 5:38Speaker 3: that thing up. The track temp was so low that
- 5:41Speaker 3: you needed the grip, and you look at the guys
- 5:44Speaker 3: who started on the soft front tire and where they
- 5:46Speaker 3: ended up. Jack Miller was kind of the pioneer and
- 5:49Speaker 3: a lot of guys followed what Jack did. But Zako
- 5:51Speaker 3: was on the soft front tire. He went from the
- 5:53Speaker 3: third row to the podium. Bazeki was on the soft
- 5:56Speaker 3: front tire. He went from the fourth row to win
- 5:58Speaker 3: the race. Quaaterero was on the off front tire and
- 6:00Speaker 3: he led the race until the bike packed up. Jack
- 6:03Speaker 3: obviously did well. There were preda. A Costa came through
- 6:05Speaker 3: from the fifth throw on that same tire, and you
- 6:08Speaker 3: saw the crashes at the start of the first race,
- 6:11Speaker 3: and even the underperformance by the deucaddies in particular, they
- 6:14Speaker 3: couldn't run that soft front because it was graining so badly.
- 6:17Speaker 3: They were kind of stuck with the medium front. Normally,
- 6:19Speaker 3: Silveston is a track where you need a strong front tire,
- 6:22Speaker 3: but it was so cold that there was no real
- 6:24Speaker 3: purchase from that medium tire. Have you ever seen a
- 6:27Speaker 3: scrappier race? For some of those decaddies, They were off
- 6:29Speaker 3: the track all over the place. Marquees was all over
- 6:31Speaker 3: the place, Bano I fell down to, Jane Antonio was nowhere,
- 6:36Speaker 3: Alex Marquez had the big crash at the start of
- 6:38Speaker 3: the first race. They had no grip and it was
- 6:40Speaker 3: just so bizarre seeing we've become so used to seeing
- 6:43Speaker 3: the Jacati carp and how good the ducaddies are in
- 6:45Speaker 3: this series. They look like sort of also ran for
- 6:48Speaker 3: most of the weekend, and it shows you how good
- 6:50Speaker 3: Marques's powers of recovery were that he was able to
- 6:53Speaker 3: finish on the podium. But this was a race for
- 6:55Speaker 3: everybody else, and the best of everybody else was and
- 6:58Speaker 3: Aprilia on this circle and Marco Bozeki in that sweet spot.
- 7:02Speaker 3: I got to say, it was quite nice seeing a
- 7:05Speaker 3: variety up the front because there was a time there
- 7:08Speaker 3: where I thought, huh, we may not even get a
- 7:10Speaker 3: du Catti on the podium, and you know, so that
- 7:13Speaker 3: made me think, how long has it been since we
- 7:15Speaker 3: haven't had a du caddie on the podium. So I
- 7:16Speaker 3: went digging and went digging and went more digging because
- 7:19Speaker 3: it had been so long. It was twenty twenty one,
- 7:21Speaker 3: that was the last time we had a Grand Prix
- 7:23Speaker 3: where there were no ducaddies on the podium. We just
- 7:24Speaker 3: about got it. But yeah, amazing Sunday. I've gone off
- 7:28Speaker 3: in eighty seven different directions there because I had so
- 7:30Speaker 3: much to say. But I don't know for you. Being
- 7:34Speaker 3: on the ground there, there was this this sense with
- 7:37Speaker 3: Bozeki that it kind of felt like it was his
- 7:39Speaker 3: destiny for the whole weekend. He just looked like a
- 7:41Speaker 3: race winner, didn't he From the moment the sprint started,
- 7:43Speaker 3: he looked like a guy who could win a Grand Prix.
- 7:45Speaker 3: And then he went and went and did it.
- 7:47Speaker 2: He just looked strong.
- 7:50Speaker 1: I don't know any other words to say, just strong
- 7:52Speaker 1: this weekend. And like you mentioned there with du caddies,
- 7:54Speaker 1: and it's something that I did want to bring up,
- 7:56Speaker 1: is Pekovanyaya looked weak this weekend. Marko Bitzeki looked strong.
- 8:01Speaker 1: And even when you was watching him in his pro
- 8:05Speaker 1: session debriefs and whatnot, there was just something there, like
- 8:10Speaker 1: a subtle confidence of maybe everything starting to align. And
- 8:14Speaker 1: I think all the off talk drama, he clearly wasn't
- 8:19Speaker 1: involved in it and was just pushing it to the side.
- 8:21Speaker 1: But going on track, it just felt comfortable. Then when
- 8:25Speaker 1: you, you know, bring up obviously alage having the wind there whatnot,
- 8:27Speaker 1: it seems to be it's a circuit that does obviously
- 8:30Speaker 1: suit the Aprilias. But talking about Sunday in particular, the
- 8:34Speaker 1: wind was really strong on Sunday, so they were actually
- 8:37Speaker 1: traveling a less speed. I did hear the stat and
- 8:41Speaker 1: you probably not, Matt. I'm not sure the exact speed
- 8:45Speaker 1: difference that they were traveling on the Sunday, but that
- 8:48Speaker 1: put everything into play as well, and I think that's
- 8:50Speaker 1: when we're starting to see the weaknesses in g K,
- 8:56Speaker 1: the weaknesses in Peco especially, And I know we want
- 8:59Speaker 1: to come onto that through because I need to talk
- 9:01Speaker 1: about Joan Zarco when you talk about Fabio.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Let's just.
- 9:05Speaker 1: So let's move on to Let's move on to Zako quickly.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Because Joan Zarco back to back prodiums with Honda, first
- 9:13Speaker 1: time since the whole Mark Marquez era, I'm assuming as well.
- 9:17Speaker 1: And then I'm sure you heard this about his post
- 9:20Speaker 1: race debrief, but he said that when they.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Did that first start he felt quite jumbled. I guess,
- 9:26Speaker 2: a bit like on edge.
- 9:27Speaker 1: That racey start allowed him to calm down. And then
- 9:30Speaker 1: I heard what you said about the Zecie I read
- 9:32Speaker 1: as well. He said that Jack Miller he just wanted
- 9:34Speaker 1: to get in with Jack because Jack could create his
- 9:37Speaker 1: own lines. He would stay behind and hopefully get out
- 9:40Speaker 1: to the front. So it seems like Joan Zarko is
- 9:43Speaker 1: really working hard now to be that top Honda rider.
- 9:46Speaker 1: We keep hearing rumors about him potentially going to HLC
- 9:49Speaker 1: and whatnot.
- 9:50Speaker 2: What was it about this weekend though?
- 9:52Speaker 1: For you, Matt, Why is Zarko now all of a
- 9:54Speaker 1: sudden closer to the front it is? Are they bringing
- 9:57Speaker 1: a lot more new development with them?
- 10:00Speaker 4: It's partly the development.
- 10:01Speaker 3: I think it's partly what he's doing with the motorbike
- 10:03Speaker 3: at the moment, because you see what the other guys
- 10:06Speaker 3: on the Hondas are doing, and you see flashes with Zako.
- 10:10Speaker 3: He's got this sort of very bizarre combination. He's almost
- 10:13Speaker 3: the fiercest guy in elbow to elbow combat, like you
- 10:18Speaker 3: know when you're in a fight with Johann Zako, because
- 10:20Speaker 3: those elbows are up and he's really really standing his ground.
- 10:23Speaker 3: But he's got this calmness about him at the moment
- 10:25Speaker 3: in that he can be quite emotional, and we saw
- 10:29Speaker 3: that earlier in his career when he was at Yamahara
- 10:31Speaker 3: and he was just I'm gooing hell for leather at
- 10:33Speaker 3: the starter races and to hell with the outcome, and
- 10:35Speaker 3: the outcome was usually him falling off, or when he
- 10:38Speaker 3: was with Katim, he got so inside his own head
- 10:40Speaker 3: with that that that thing was over in half a
- 10:41Speaker 3: season because it was such a disaster. Whether it's just
- 10:45Speaker 3: age or stage of his career or you know, you
- 10:48Speaker 3: remember before he won an Australia in twenty twenty three,
- 10:50Speaker 3: it was always like, ah, he's the best rider never
- 10:52Speaker 3: to win a Grand Prix, the best rider never to
- 10:54Speaker 3: win a Grand Prix. So he got that monkey off
- 10:55Speaker 3: his back. He's just riding with a real sense of
- 10:58Speaker 3: calm at the moment. And look, we know that he
- 11:01Speaker 3: wants a factory HRC, right. I mean, now it's become
- 11:04Speaker 3: a seat that everyone wants all of a sudden. It was,
- 11:06Speaker 3: you know, a seat that everyone was running away from
- 11:07Speaker 3: about two years ago. But I think he is at
- 11:11Speaker 3: peace with whatever comes to pass here because he's in
- 11:15Speaker 3: a good place with Luceio on factory equipment at LCR.
- 11:18Speaker 3: And there's something about that smaller outfit and maybe his
- 11:21Speaker 3: voice can be a little bit louder in an outfit
- 11:23Speaker 3: like that because it's not as many people and not
- 11:25Speaker 3: as big, and I think he's quite relishing the role
- 11:29Speaker 3: of being a leader there. He's like the beacon for
- 11:31Speaker 3: them to follow, and you can see the way that
- 11:35Speaker 3: he's reacting to adversity. He's a lot more flatline than
- 11:38Speaker 3: he used to be. He used to be super spiky emotionally.
- 11:41Speaker 3: You know, there's a calm to the way he's going
- 11:44Speaker 3: racing at the moment, so for him to have the
- 11:46Speaker 3: like you said, you know, I'm going to watch what
- 11:48Speaker 3: Jack's doing, and as I was saying before, I'm going
- 11:50Speaker 3: to sit behind Bazeki because he's going to toe me
- 11:52Speaker 3: away from these guys. There's a clarity of thought with
- 11:55Speaker 3: him in battle at the moment that maybe we haven't
- 11:57Speaker 3: seen previously. He was just outstanding and I think on
- 12:01Speaker 3: any other day we would be talking more about him,
- 12:03Speaker 3: but for the fact that, well, he won the previous
- 12:05Speaker 3: race in France, so we spent a lot of time
- 12:07Speaker 3: talking about him last week, and because what Bozeki had
- 12:10Speaker 3: done was so brilliant on that Aprilia. But it's no
- 12:14Speaker 3: less of a ride from Zako, just tremendous all weekend
- 12:17Speaker 3: and up to fifth in the World Championship. A Honda
- 12:20Speaker 3: rider is in the top five of the World Championship.
- 12:22Speaker 3: It's been a while since we said that.
- 12:25Speaker 1: It's been a long time since we six nice. How
- 12:29Speaker 1: cool the fact that we've started a majority of this
- 12:31Speaker 1: podcast talking about Aprillia, talking about young Psako on a Honda,
- 12:34Speaker 1: and now I'm going to go to Yamaha and talk
- 12:36Speaker 1: about Fabio Jack because it feels like all of last
- 12:40Speaker 1: year with our Pittok pod, and so far this year
- 12:43Speaker 1: it was Mark and Peco, Mark and Peco, Juohe Martin.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Now we're actually bringing the rest of the field into
- 12:48Speaker 1: the mix, and.
- 12:48Speaker 2: It's the shaduff that we needed.
- 12:50Speaker 1: But the shakeup faber Corderraro did not need was that
- 12:55Speaker 1: absolute heartbreak of his rear ride high device getting stuck on.
- 13:00Speaker 2: You could see it.
- 13:02Speaker 1: I was sitting in the media center when the race
- 13:03Speaker 1: was going on. You could see everyone going, why is
- 13:05Speaker 1: he breaking so hard? I think his maggots and beggetts.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Why is he trying to like do like a front
- 13:10Speaker 1: end stoppy? You know, someone even said, I thought I
- 13:13Speaker 1: saw a smoker lap earlier.
- 13:15Speaker 2: But to have that, I think it's a four point
- 13:17Speaker 2: five second.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Lead ahead of theirs, To be that close to taste
- 13:22Speaker 1: the victory and have to forfeit the win.
- 13:26Speaker 2: I was almost into the whole media center.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Everyone was just going Fabio, Fabio, poor Fabio. And then
- 13:34Speaker 1: he came up and did his post race debrief and
- 13:36Speaker 1: actually started crying in front of the raw emotion because
- 13:42Speaker 1: we know that he is stuck with this manufacturer.
- 13:45Speaker 2: He believes in them.
- 13:47Speaker 1: Obviously this weekend they brought in some era upgrades that
- 13:49Speaker 1: we could really see was beneficial to both him and Jack.
- 13:53Speaker 2: But man for that victory to be so close.
- 13:57Speaker 3: Oh, when he can take the emotion out of this
- 14:03Speaker 3: and reflect on it, which you know is obviously going
- 14:05Speaker 3: to take days because it's been nearly three years since
- 14:07Speaker 3: you want a Grand Prix. When you can take the
- 14:09Speaker 3: emotion out of it and you can look at yourself
- 14:11Speaker 3: in the mirror and say I did everything right, and
- 14:14Speaker 3: I think that helps to take some of the sting
- 14:17Speaker 3: out of it, because in the end of the day
- 14:18Speaker 3: he was let down by his equipment with the failure
- 14:21Speaker 3: of the rear ride height device. Everything he could have
- 14:24Speaker 3: controlled he controlled absolutely brilliantly. Another just ridiculous pole position
- 14:30Speaker 3: on Saturday. And I know this is not what I
- 14:33Speaker 3: was going to say I get paid the big Bucks for,
- 14:34Speaker 3: or just so I get paid the Bucks for to
- 14:37Speaker 3: come up with words to describe things when they go. Well,
- 14:39Speaker 3: my reaction to Quaturero and Q two at the moment
- 14:41Speaker 3: is I just laugh a lot because it's just preposterous
- 14:44Speaker 3: some of the stuff that he's doing on that bike
- 14:45Speaker 3: at the moment. There's no words that really describe it.
- 14:48Speaker 3: But we saw in the sprint the previous day. It's like, well,
- 14:50Speaker 3: that's great, you can do that over one lap, but
- 14:52Speaker 3: doing it over a half race distance is not tenable,
- 14:55Speaker 3: and certainly over a full race distance. But I think
- 14:58Speaker 3: there are a couple of things at play on Sunday.
- 15:01Speaker 3: Being convinced to run the soft front was clearly the
- 15:03Speaker 3: right decision. So if Jack Miller was the guy who
- 15:05Speaker 3: convinced Fabio to go for that, then more cute os
- 15:07Speaker 3: to Jack with what he's doing.
- 15:08Speaker 4: There with Yamaha.
- 15:10Speaker 3: But because we're in that second start, and at the
- 15:13Speaker 3: beginning of that race, you had Alex Marquess who'd fallen
- 15:16Speaker 3: off in the first start before it was red flag,
- 15:18Speaker 3: Mark Marquess who'd falled off in the first start before
- 15:20Speaker 3: it was red flag. The other fast guys that came through,
- 15:23Speaker 3: like Betzeki and Zako were several rows behind. You could
- 15:27Speaker 3: understand why maybe the ducaddies were a little bit cautious.
- 15:31Speaker 3: As much as murder GP riders get off the start
- 15:33Speaker 3: of the race, and Fabio's like the Yamaha works really
- 15:36Speaker 3: really well in clean air. These guys might be sick
- 15:39Speaker 3: and guessing themselves just a little bit after what happened
- 15:42Speaker 3: twenty minutes before. I'm going to just get out and
- 15:44Speaker 3: break these guys in the first few laps, and his
- 15:48Speaker 3: first five laps were absolutely astonishing, while the ducaddies were
- 15:51Speaker 3: floundering around and Jack Miller's up in second place. There
- 15:54Speaker 3: were two races going on. There was a couatarero race
- 15:57Speaker 3: by himself at the front, and then four and a
- 15:59Speaker 3: half seconds back there was Miller and everybody else. He
- 16:02Speaker 3: had done all the hard work and he was basically
- 16:04Speaker 3: in cruise control from there. There was a couple of
- 16:06Speaker 3: laps there when Bizeki got up to second and you're going, okay,
- 16:09Speaker 3: like Bozeki's three tenths faster, is he starting to get
- 16:12Speaker 3: back in the mix, And Fabio just got that gap
- 16:15Speaker 3: up by four tenths just to prove that he had
- 16:17Speaker 3: plenty left in his pocket if he needed to deploy it.
- 16:21Speaker 3: So for him to get a DNF after such a
- 16:23Speaker 3: long victory drought in that manner, absolutely gutting for him.
- 16:27Speaker 3: But like you said before, it's amazing we're having this
- 16:30Speaker 3: conversation about Yamaha because ever since the end of twenty two,
- 16:35Speaker 3: when he sort of fought the good fight but he
- 16:36Speaker 3: was fighting a losing battle with Banyay for that year's
- 16:39Speaker 3: title in twenty two, they've pretty much been nowhere in
- 16:42Speaker 3: twenty three and four, and you know, you can start
- 16:46Speaker 3: to not overrate what qua A already before. But there
- 16:50Speaker 3: is the question a lot we haven't seen you upfront
- 16:52Speaker 3: for a while. Are you super dependent on your equipment?
- 16:55Speaker 3: They all are to a degree, but he is one
- 16:57Speaker 3: of the absolute best guys on the grid. I'd go
- 17:00Speaker 3: as far as saying the only rider I would take
- 17:02Speaker 3: in a lottery in a draft over Fabio corceerro Be,
- 17:06Speaker 3: Mark Markez I Reckon.
- 17:07Speaker 4: He's the second best rider remote GP. Quite frankly, it's.
- 17:10Speaker 3: A great reminder of his quality and as galling as
- 17:13Speaker 3: that was for him to lose that win, I could
- 17:15Speaker 3: see him winning a race before this season is out
- 17:17Speaker 3: with the right set of circumstances and track and just
- 17:20Speaker 3: that little bit of luck that deserted him. But talk
- 17:23Speaker 3: about enhancing your reputation. He was absolutely brilliant and we've
- 17:27Speaker 3: seen three saturdays.
- 17:28Speaker 4: In a row where he's been on pole.
- 17:29Speaker 3: But that was a win he should have had, and
- 17:31Speaker 3: I do hope that twelfth twelfth win comes to him
- 17:34Speaker 3: soon because he certainly deserves it.
- 17:36Speaker 1: You're the statsman, Matt, so I was just thinking when
- 17:39Speaker 1: you were talking with the lap times that that Zechi
- 17:42Speaker 1: was doing while Fabia was still in the lead. If
- 17:45Speaker 1: Fabio had managed to maintain not had that.
- 17:48Speaker 2: Technical issue, would Betzeki have caught up to Fabio?
- 17:53Speaker 1: Do you think with the laps time he was doing,
- 17:54Speaker 1: only because I asked the extreme close up we saw
- 17:58Speaker 1: of Zako's bike and how much that front tire was graining,
- 18:01Speaker 1: like you mentioned, do you think that would have it
- 18:04Speaker 1: would have stayed Fabio first, Marco then Zako or do
- 18:07Speaker 1: you think that say would have put up to him.
- 18:10Speaker 3: I think I think Kuato had so much of a
- 18:12Speaker 3: gap at that point that it was up to four
- 18:14Speaker 3: and a half seconds. I think he could have probably
- 18:17Speaker 3: eased off, and that because there were six laps to
- 18:19Speaker 3: go when he retireds on lap twelve, so he probably
- 18:24Speaker 3: rolls to a two and a half to three second win.
- 18:27Speaker 3: I don't think we would have got down to look
- 18:29Speaker 3: Bazeki's brilliant on old tires. We've seen that before. But
- 18:32Speaker 3: those couple of laps where Kuaturo realized the pace behind
- 18:35Speaker 3: him was hiding up a little bit and it just
- 18:36Speaker 3: instantly took three tenths off what he was doing. He
- 18:39Speaker 3: had time and reserve there, so I don't think we
- 18:41Speaker 3: would have got some amazing last lap showed, and I
- 18:43Speaker 3: think he had them covered because of what he'd done in.
- 18:46Speaker 4: The first five laps.
- 18:47Speaker 3: I thought he would have had more in his pocket
- 18:49Speaker 3: for the last five when you can start managing tyra
- 18:52Speaker 3: and just not taking as much risk. The first five
- 18:54Speaker 3: laps set him up for what should have been a
- 18:56Speaker 3: pretty emphatic victory and just gutting that you didn't get it.
- 19:01Speaker 1: Oh. I found really interesting this weekend and thinking about
- 19:05Speaker 1: it so far this season, I really feel like Lady Luck, somehow,
- 19:09Speaker 1: miraculously is on the Marquez brother's side. I think about
- 19:13Speaker 1: the patch that if we didn't have that red flag
- 19:17Speaker 1: with both Marque's brothers crashing out on that first lap
- 19:20Speaker 1: during the original race start, that technically could have been
- 19:23Speaker 1: marked the DNF of the season. But the fact that
- 19:27Speaker 1: he got that red flag this weekend, he had that
- 19:29Speaker 1: red flag encoder. It just seems that so as miraculously
- 19:33Speaker 1: happening for the Marquez brothers.
- 19:35Speaker 3: But you know what, like I mean, look to cover
- 19:38Speaker 3: the red flag off It was completely appropriate because you
- 19:41Speaker 3: had ad Catti on fire somewhere between the last two
- 19:44Speaker 3: quarters and spewing all over.
- 19:45Speaker 4: The track, so they had to red flag it.
- 19:47Speaker 3: And you know, the rule is what it is if
- 19:48Speaker 3: there's a red flag within the first three laps and
- 19:50Speaker 3: everyone gets to restart. The Alex Marquez crash was cold,
- 19:54Speaker 3: medium front tie and a front ride height device that
- 19:57Speaker 3: didn't disengage going to the first corner, which is why
- 19:59Speaker 3: he went down so rapidly. And then Mark's crash on
- 20:02Speaker 3: lap two of the first race was he said he'd
- 20:04Speaker 3: been super cautious through maggots and Becketts in the first lap,
- 20:07Speaker 3: and then when he was in the lead on lap
- 20:08Speaker 3: two he decided to push a little bit more and
- 20:10Speaker 3: was literally blown halfway off the track by the wind
- 20:12Speaker 3: because it was so gusting there and lost control there.
- 20:14Speaker 3: And we're talking about Jucadi. Before you look at what
- 20:17Speaker 3: a Ducaddi looks like relative to all the other motor
- 20:19Speaker 3: GP bikes. There's aerodynamic winglets on winglets on winglets on
- 20:23Speaker 3: those things. It looks like a cheese grater, there's so
- 20:25Speaker 3: many bits in it. But on a really windy day
- 20:27Speaker 3: like it was on Sunday, there's more surfaces for the
- 20:30Speaker 3: winter hit on the doucaddy and it definitely affected the performance.
- 20:33Speaker 3: You could see that was part of why they struggled relatively.
- 20:37Speaker 4: But you know it was interesting.
- 20:39Speaker 3: Mark was not happy after the race that he was
- 20:41Speaker 3: very annoyed with himself for the mistake that he made
- 20:44Speaker 3: in the first race, but he managed to regroup and
- 20:48Speaker 3: make the best of a bad situation. He was down
- 20:49Speaker 3: in tenth at one point on Sunday in that main
- 20:52Speaker 3: race and just methodically worked his way back through, And
- 20:57Speaker 3: you know, that was a day to that was a
- 21:00Speaker 3: day to consolidate. And he's had his eyes on his
- 21:03Speaker 3: brother Alex for a lot of these last few races.
- 21:06Speaker 3: If I'm having a bad day, that's not great. But
- 21:08Speaker 3: if I'm having a slightly less bad day than my
- 21:10Speaker 3: brother who's behind me, then that's good because I'm accumulating points.
- 21:14Speaker 3: And I'm always a believer that you win these World
- 21:17Speaker 3: Championships on your worst days, not your best ones. If
- 21:20Speaker 3: you can mitigate the pain of your bad days. If
- 21:23Speaker 3: he's not had a good day and he's not happy
- 21:26Speaker 3: with how he's ridden and the decisions he's made, and
- 21:28Speaker 3: he's banked to podium and he's finished two places ahead
- 21:30Speaker 3: of his main rival in the championship standings, that's a
- 21:33Speaker 3: good day and you take that one and you move on.
- 21:36Speaker 3: We know that Silveston's not a great circuit for him,
- 21:39Speaker 3: and an interesting theory. I heard about that over the weekend,
- 21:42Speaker 3: which makes complete sense. I'm not sure why I didn't
- 21:44Speaker 3: think about it before. A lot of the high speed
- 21:47Speaker 3: corners at Silverston are right handers, and we know Mark's
- 21:50Speaker 3: awesome and left hand corners, and Mark slightly struggled more
- 21:53Speaker 3: in these fast right handers ever since the fort shoulder
- 21:56Speaker 3: surgeries on your right side, which quite frankly, you would
- 21:59Speaker 3: struggle more in high speed right hand corners if you
- 22:01Speaker 3: have had your right shoulder operated on four times. It's
- 22:04Speaker 3: just not a track that suits his riding style, which
- 22:07Speaker 3: is amazing to think for a guy as good as
- 22:09Speaker 3: Mark is, so for him to get a podium out
- 22:11Speaker 3: of a weekend where he clearly wasn't quite right. He
- 22:14Speaker 3: got beaten in the sprint for the first time all year,
- 22:17Speaker 3: and rode a bit of luck to get on the
- 22:18Speaker 3: podium on Sunday. These are the days when you win
- 22:20Speaker 3: a World championship, not the days when you're cruising around
- 22:22Speaker 3: smashing everyone by ten seconds. It's making the best of
- 22:25Speaker 3: the least and that was definitely an example of that.
- 22:30Speaker 1: Did you hear the off track talk about Peko Vano
- 22:35Speaker 1: and Mike Marquez and I don't know who said what,
- 22:38Speaker 1: but apparently it was along the lines of, you know,
- 22:42Speaker 1: you can't keep blaming the bike at some point, it's
- 22:44Speaker 1: coming down to the writer. I feel like that marquees
- 22:47Speaker 1: to Peco situation because you know, you're talking about making
- 22:50Speaker 1: the best of the worst situations and Peko Vanak is
- 22:55Speaker 1: on struggle Street at the.
- 22:56Speaker 4: Moment, right, Yeah, yeah, he is.
- 22:58Speaker 3: I mean we've talked about this before and that there's
- 23:00Speaker 3: two really different approaches to try to achieve the same
- 23:03Speaker 3: end here in that Peko's you know, you always call
- 23:05Speaker 3: him the professor, and it's so right because he wants
- 23:08Speaker 3: to understand everything first and then deploy it. And we've
- 23:12Speaker 3: seen in the last couple of years that when he
- 23:14Speaker 3: does understand everything perfectly and everything is just so for
- 23:18Speaker 3: him in the way that he wants it. He can
- 23:20Speaker 3: get himself into a zone where he's just about impossible
- 23:23Speaker 3: to be unless he falls off, which he did last
- 23:25Speaker 3: year and why what lost the World championship. He can
- 23:27Speaker 3: get in those zones where he'll go to Asen or
- 23:30Speaker 3: he'll go to some of these tracks where he's in
- 23:32Speaker 3: his sweet spot and you just don't see him for
- 23:34Speaker 3: the entire weekend. It's like bye bye p one and
- 23:36Speaker 3: he just disappears. There's a bit of Johaler and so
- 23:38Speaker 3: in the way that he goes about it and seat
- 23:40Speaker 3: of you know, that real sort of win every race
- 23:41Speaker 3: and the laboratory perfectly. Whereas Mark, let's be honest, a
- 23:45Speaker 3: lot of those years at Honda, that bike wasn't the
- 23:47Speaker 3: best or second best bike on the grid. But Mark's
- 23:49Speaker 3: one of these guys who would just bend a bike
- 23:52Speaker 3: to its will and it's just like, well, this isn't perfect,
- 23:55Speaker 3: but I'm just going to manhandle this thing into a
- 23:57Speaker 3: position it shouldn't be in. And to my mind, the
- 23:59Speaker 3: biggest legacy of what Mark's done in his motor GP
- 24:01Speaker 3: career not so much what he did at Honda. Look
- 24:05Speaker 3: what happened to Honda when he was either injured or
- 24:07Speaker 3: not there, or once he left, they were absolutely hopeless
- 24:10Speaker 3: for years. Because he was so good. He masked a
- 24:14Speaker 3: lot of the problems that bike had, and Honda could
- 24:16Speaker 3: look at it and say, well, this thing's still winning races,
- 24:18Speaker 3: whereas the probably the question was, well could any other
- 24:21Speaker 3: rider win a race on this thing? So Mark is
- 24:23Speaker 3: the guy who I reckon. Mark would be a terrible
- 24:26Speaker 3: test rider or a terrible development rider, because you could
- 24:29Speaker 3: give him a bike that was no good and you'll
- 24:30Speaker 3: be like, and that's fine, it's fast. I could get
- 24:32Speaker 3: around on this thing, not be just by riding around
- 24:36Speaker 3: the problems or the deficiencies of a machine, whereas someone
- 24:38Speaker 3: else will go, well it doesn't turn, and it doesn't
- 24:40Speaker 3: do this, and it doesn't do that, where Mark's just like,
- 24:43Speaker 3: I'll live with that. So you know, Mark on the
- 24:45Speaker 3: best bike is dangerous. Mark on not the best bike
- 24:48Speaker 3: is possibly even more dangerous, because that's when you see
- 24:50Speaker 3: how good the guy is. So you've got Bagnaro Marquez
- 24:53Speaker 3: approaching the same problem from two very very different directions.
- 24:58Speaker 3: Peco's not the sort of guy who can just say,
- 25:00Speaker 3: but I'm just going to ride this thing harder and
- 25:02Speaker 3: live with the consequences. Peco needs to know why things
- 25:05Speaker 3: happen and how they happen before he commits to doing them,
- 25:08Speaker 3: whereas Mark's prepared to live more on his wits. And
- 25:11Speaker 3: it's so interesting that I love a bit of motor
- 25:15Speaker 3: GP body language. I'm a big fan of it because
- 25:17Speaker 3: when you see it's not so much what people say,
- 25:20Speaker 3: it's what they don't say, right, And you can see
- 25:23Speaker 3: so much in the body language and these pressed dee
- 25:25Speaker 3: briefings and everything else. You watch every little interaction in
- 25:28Speaker 3: and angle, not so much the soundbites, but how they're
- 25:30Speaker 3: saying them. You can learn so much about a way
- 25:33Speaker 3: a writer goes about it by what they're not saying,
- 25:35Speaker 3: which I know sounds a bit counterintuitive, but there's so
- 25:38Speaker 3: much about the approach and the attitude of writers up
- 25:40Speaker 3: and down the grid, and Mark and Pecco are at
- 25:42Speaker 3: very opposite ends of the spectrum.
- 25:44Speaker 4: There.
- 25:46Speaker 2: On that note, I have.
- 25:48Speaker 1: To bring up the whole alicious Bargero Morbidelli first lap
- 25:53Speaker 1: slash that Morbidelli's blaming Aleish, saying he did it on purpose.
- 25:58Speaker 1: I feel like this is a few day is obviously
- 26:00Speaker 1: dating back years and years and years ago, but why
- 26:03Speaker 1: is this still happening now? Talking about the body language,
- 26:06Speaker 1: you could see these two just wanting to butt heads.
- 26:09Speaker 3: The two of them walking out of the gravel trap
- 26:11Speaker 3: together when they clearly would have wanted to be next
- 26:14Speaker 3: to anybody else in the world except for the person
- 26:17Speaker 3: they were walking next to, was high comedy because they
- 26:20Speaker 3: covered it for it was so It was so so funny.
- 26:25Speaker 3: And you love a good, long running grudge which you'd't
- 26:28Speaker 3: even know where it has its genesis. This thin Morbidelli
- 26:31Speaker 3: on Sunday brought up the fact that he thought that
- 26:33Speaker 3: Elisia Spargo cost him the twenty twenty World Championship. That's
- 26:36Speaker 3: the first time I've heard that one. We're going back
- 26:38Speaker 3: five years saying that, oh he did something to me
- 26:40Speaker 3: beside oh that year, and everyone's like, wow, you don't
- 26:43Speaker 3: carry a grudge Morbidelli. I don't know whether you were
- 26:45Speaker 3: at his press debrief on Sunday. He's talking about a
- 26:48Speaker 3: Spargo and obviously he's a wild card at the moment,
- 26:51Speaker 3: and Morbidelli said, well, he won't be here for the
- 26:53Speaker 3: next race, so it's all good, and then just walked off.
- 26:56Speaker 3: It was the It was the funniest way to end
- 26:58Speaker 3: a press debrief.
- 26:59Speaker 4: So those two definitely have some history.
- 27:01Speaker 3: We remember the slapping incident in Guitar a few years
- 27:04Speaker 3: ago which got Elash into a lot of trouble. They
- 27:06Speaker 3: have formed, they have history, and it was one of
- 27:09Speaker 3: those things on the first lap of that race where
- 27:10Speaker 3: Alesha afterwards said that I actually breaked almost too early
- 27:14Speaker 3: into that second last corner on the end of lap
- 27:16Speaker 3: one because I didn't want to run up the back
- 27:18Speaker 3: of someone or cause a problem, and then it ended
- 27:20Speaker 3: up causing a problem. But those two are like magnets
- 27:23Speaker 3: to each other where they're on the track, like you
- 27:24Speaker 3: know they're going to come together at some point and
- 27:27Speaker 3: get the pop called out and enjoy the fallout because
- 27:29Speaker 3: it's difficult get.
- 27:31Speaker 1: The popcorn out as well for that last lap. Speaking
- 27:34Speaker 1: of Morbidelli, that battle with him in Mark, if there
- 27:36Speaker 1: was anyone on the grid who was going to send
- 27:38Speaker 1: it to Mark because he has nothing to lose, it
- 27:41Speaker 1: was a Morbidali and you could see that I was
- 27:44Speaker 1: sitting in the media center, like I said, and everyone
- 27:46Speaker 1: was like, come on, Frankie, come on, Frankie, because you.
- 27:49Speaker 2: Just know that he was just going to send it.
- 27:52Speaker 3: Yeah, he was another guy who you know that restarted race.
- 27:56Speaker 3: We're talking about the Marquez brothers before and the fact
- 27:59Speaker 3: that Morbidelli he was off the bike and he's actually fractured.
- 28:02Speaker 3: He's left foot I heard today as well in that
- 28:04Speaker 3: accident before the right he's got a fracture in there,
- 28:06Speaker 3: which is going to have to deal with the fact
- 28:07Speaker 3: that he was almost getting a podium about an hour later.
- 28:10Speaker 3: Was a pretty good outcome for him. But yeah, he
- 28:13Speaker 3: certainly wasn't going to die wondering on that last quarter.
- 28:15Speaker 3: He was going to send it and of course everyone
- 28:17Speaker 3: in the media sent to knew, everyone watching on TV
- 28:19Speaker 3: knew it, and Mark Marquez knew it as well. So
- 28:22Speaker 3: I'm just going to slightly run you out onto the
- 28:24Speaker 3: exit curb there and I only need to beat you
- 28:26Speaker 3: by seventeen thousands, but that's fine. I'll take my podium trophy,
- 28:29Speaker 3: thank you exactly.
- 28:31Speaker 1: And obviously, being in an Aussie podcast, we have to
- 28:34Speaker 1: talk about Jack Miller, because, like we mentioned earlier, at
- 28:38Speaker 1: one point there I was messaging the guys at Fox
- 28:41Speaker 1: Australia saying, oh my goodness, we might have an Aussie
- 28:44Speaker 1: across all three podiums. Straight after the Motor two Prodium,
- 28:48Speaker 1: which we'll talk about shortly. But Jack Miller, we spoke
- 28:51Speaker 1: about the error upgrades a little bit, but Temmy because
- 28:55Speaker 1: you wrote a fantastic piece on Jack, because the news
- 28:57Speaker 1: broke about him doing the Suzuka for Yamaha, which is
- 29:02Speaker 1: a prestigious event in its own What was with Jack?
- 29:06Speaker 1: What was that that pace? Why did he drop down
- 29:09Speaker 1: further in the race? Was it the tires in.
- 29:11Speaker 4: The end a little bit.
- 29:13Speaker 3: I mean, Jack is pretty hard on tires, as we know,
- 29:16Speaker 3: relative to some of the other guys that were running
- 29:18Speaker 3: the soft but he was still fourth with four laps
- 29:21Speaker 3: to go, like he'd gotten shuffled down the pack a
- 29:22Speaker 3: little bit more. Beidelli at Alberti about of the way
- 29:25Speaker 3: he managed to recover from that and get back on
- 29:26Speaker 3: his lines. And there's something about that Yamaha that he.
- 29:30Speaker 4: Was saying afterwards.
- 29:31Speaker 3: When it can run its lines and you can you're
- 29:33Speaker 3: not having to really stop the bike to block, pass
- 29:37Speaker 3: or defend when it runs its line smoothly, it's a
- 29:39Speaker 3: really really effective bike. We saw that with Quaaterero upfront
- 29:42Speaker 3: just doing the perfect race. I'm not sure that Yamaha
- 29:45Speaker 3: is the greatest sort of bike in combat, if that
- 29:48Speaker 3: makes sense, because it's you interrupt the flow of that
- 29:50Speaker 3: bike and it's no wheredear as effective. But Jack had
- 29:52Speaker 3: got himself back up to P four and then with
- 29:55Speaker 3: about four laps to go he had that came slightly
- 29:57Speaker 3: wide into T nine there at Cops and as he
- 30:00Speaker 3: said afterwards, got out on all the dirty stuff on
- 30:02Speaker 3: the outside, and then you know, Morbidelli got back past him,
- 30:04Speaker 3: and then a cost that came back through while Jack
- 30:06Speaker 3: was recovering from being out in the weeds a little bit.
- 30:09Speaker 3: So that was probably the one that annoyed him the
- 30:11Speaker 3: most because he finished seventh and probably should have finished
- 30:13Speaker 3: fifth or sixth. But you've also got to take the
- 30:17Speaker 3: fact that you know, he had that three full events
- 30:20Speaker 3: without a score, you know, through Qatar and Spain and France,
- 30:23Speaker 3: with some incredibly bad luck in that, and then obviously
- 30:26Speaker 3: the mistake that he made in France had probably cost
- 30:28Speaker 3: himself minimum podium possibly a win on the day that
- 30:31Speaker 3: Zako won that race. So I think for him to
- 30:33Speaker 3: score points in a sprint for the first time this year,
- 30:35Speaker 3: and then to get a decent hall of points in
- 30:37Speaker 3: a Grand Prix, I think that's a pretty good weekend
- 30:41Speaker 3: given where things have been recently. But there were two
- 30:43Speaker 3: things for me, and I wrote about this today. I
- 30:45Speaker 3: think the fact that Yamaha have entrusted him to do
- 30:48Speaker 3: the eight hour, like it's a big, prestigious honor for
- 30:51Speaker 3: racing for a Japanese manufacturer in that event in Japan,
- 30:55Speaker 3: which is such a massive deal. You have to remember
- 30:57Speaker 3: Jack Miller doesn't have a contract with Yamaha for next year.
- 31:00Speaker 3: But if you were ever wondering what Yamaha think of
- 31:02Speaker 3: what he's doing behind the scenes and the impact that
- 31:04Speaker 3: he has made, I would be stunned if he doesn't
- 31:07Speaker 3: get a deal for next year. And I think being
- 31:09Speaker 3: entrusted with something like the eight Hour in August is
- 31:11Speaker 3: only proof of that. But I also I mentioned it
- 31:14Speaker 3: earlier in the podcast, the fact that he'd gone out
- 31:16Speaker 3: and done the sighting lap on the soft front and thought,
- 31:19Speaker 3: I'm noticing something here and immediately went to the factory
- 31:22Speaker 3: Yamaha box and grabbed rins and grab couatarra. You could
- 31:25Speaker 3: see them talking, and I dare say Jack was saying, Look,
- 31:28Speaker 3: with my experience around this place, I think I know
- 31:31Speaker 3: how this is going to play out, and I'm not
- 31:32Speaker 3: going to tell you what front tire to run, but
- 31:34Speaker 3: this is what I'm running, and this is why I'm
- 31:36Speaker 3: running it, And I think that shows you that there's
- 31:38Speaker 3: a real team player aspect to what Jack is doing
- 31:40Speaker 3: at the moment. I think he's doing things for the
- 31:43Speaker 3: greater good of that brand, and he might not be
- 31:46Speaker 3: getting their headlines for it or necessarily the points at
- 31:49Speaker 3: the moment, but we can see what Fabio's doing. Jack's
- 31:51Speaker 3: had a big role behind the scenes testing that bike.
- 31:53Speaker 3: I think his impact there has been pretty significant, and
- 31:57Speaker 3: it look It was nice to see him in the
- 31:59Speaker 3: best positions he'd been in all season. Probably a little
- 32:03Speaker 3: bit disappointed with himself that he probably didn't score a
- 32:05Speaker 3: top five in that race, but it was nice to
- 32:08Speaker 3: see him back up the front and old merit and
- 32:09Speaker 3: it looked really good. So, you know, fingers crossed, that's
- 32:12Speaker 3: the start of an upward trend for him because the
- 32:14Speaker 3: previous few races, Yeah, he committed a few silly mistakes
- 32:17Speaker 3: here and there, but Manny had some weird stuff happened
- 32:19Speaker 3: to him like hereth and some other plot and some
- 32:20Speaker 3: of the other Grand Prix that he had. So nice
- 32:23Speaker 3: to see him back up there. But his impact there
- 32:25Speaker 3: is pretty evident to me.
- 32:27Speaker 1: He's interesting you pointing that out, and now we're taking
- 32:29Speaker 1: the step back and having a look.
- 32:30Speaker 2: You can really see Yamaha are working together.
- 32:33Speaker 1: It's not so much like an individual like for example
- 32:36Speaker 1: it was last year with Pramac, Jucaddy and Factory Jucatti.
- 32:39Speaker 2: You see the.
- 32:40Speaker 1: Yamaha group are working so strongly together, and I think
- 32:44Speaker 1: that's what is helping them. Like you just said there,
- 32:47Speaker 1: I think between Jack and Fabio, we're not seeing the
- 32:51Speaker 1: necessarily the same stuff with Alex Frinz because we know
- 32:54Speaker 1: Alex has those injuries and whatnot. And then we've got
- 32:56Speaker 1: miguel O Lavera who's also just had a string of
- 32:59Speaker 1: bad luck over it. But I think with what you're
- 33:04Speaker 1: saying about Jack and what I'm hearing it, and I'm
- 33:06Speaker 1: reading what you're writing as well, if Yama don't resign
- 33:10Speaker 1: Jack for fromak Yabaha next year, it's going to be
- 33:15Speaker 1: kind of turning heads. It's going to be a whole Hey, Martine,
- 33:17Speaker 1: not getting the factory ride type of like why are
- 33:20Speaker 1: you not keeping him here?
- 33:21Speaker 2: Because we're seeing what he's doing and obviously.
- 33:23Speaker 1: What they're bringing in this weekend though, with that new
- 33:26Speaker 1: Arrow update that they had, you think that's what benefited them,
- 33:30Speaker 1: because when I was talking to Jack on Thursday, he
- 33:32Speaker 1: was saying, Oh, this is a track that he's confident at.
- 33:35Speaker 2: Here, he feels comfortable here.
- 33:37Speaker 1: Was that Errow that what what helped them? Or was
- 33:39Speaker 1: it just the fact that you know, he was feeling
- 33:41Speaker 1: strong here? We know Fabrio is coming off like a
- 33:44Speaker 1: strong couple of races as well.
- 33:46Speaker 3: Yeah, bit of bitter Colubu and bitter colar bloo with
- 33:49Speaker 3: all this sort of I think the key part is
- 33:51Speaker 3: you remember the day after her Reath they had the
- 33:53Speaker 3: one day test there where they tried the new engine
- 33:56Speaker 3: and a whole bunch of new Errow stuff. We were
- 33:58Speaker 3: probably going to see what that could really do at Lamon,
- 34:01Speaker 3: but it rained on the Sunday, so you know, all
- 34:03Speaker 3: bets are off a little bit. We didn't really quite
- 34:04Speaker 3: see the dry weather performance, and even Silveston to a
- 34:07Speaker 3: degree because the weather was so weird on Sunday it
- 34:09Speaker 3: was so cold and so blustery. Then you know, once
- 34:12Speaker 3: we go to Aragon for the next round, I think
- 34:14Speaker 3: that's where we're going to get a true representation of
- 34:18Speaker 3: where the Yamaha has improved because you think of Aragon,
- 34:20Speaker 3: it's got that massive long back straight, which in the
- 34:23Speaker 3: past the Yamaha has just got their doors blown off
- 34:25Speaker 3: going down that straight by they do caddies because they
- 34:27Speaker 3: were fifteen twenty k hour slower. I'll be super curious
- 34:30Speaker 3: to see the speed trap figures once we get to Aragon,
- 34:32Speaker 3: because it's much more of a normal in inverted Commas
- 34:35Speaker 3: circuit with the exception of that back straight, which is
- 34:37Speaker 3: where they issued bleed lap time all the time. So
- 34:40Speaker 3: we'll see if the new engine they've put in really
- 34:43Speaker 3: is stronger on a track that really rewards that sort
- 34:45Speaker 3: of thing. But I think you can see the state
- 34:48Speaker 3: of Yamaha's progress by the fact that there were three
- 34:50Speaker 3: of them in Q two, which is something we've not
- 34:52Speaker 3: seen for a really, really long time. Jack was right
- 34:54Speaker 3: up the front as early as Friday practice. He was
- 34:56Speaker 3: third after Friday and Oliver still there's a bit of
- 34:59Speaker 3: an asterisk because he's still not one hundred percent fit,
- 35:01Speaker 3: we know that, but he was closer to those other
- 35:04Speaker 3: guys than he's been.
- 35:05Speaker 4: For a while.
- 35:06Speaker 3: So you know, Yamaha have double the bikes of last
- 35:08Speaker 3: year and they're operating really well as one entity rather
- 35:13Speaker 3: than two teams, which you were talking about with Decadi
- 35:15Speaker 3: last year. They feel really together for me, and having
- 35:19Speaker 3: a couple of experienced guys in that second team once
- 35:21Speaker 3: Olivera gets back up to speed helping to.
- 35:24Speaker 4: Push the development along.
- 35:25Speaker 3: It's a really good rider lineup because the youngest and
- 35:29Speaker 3: most forceful of them is you know, the guy who's
- 35:32Speaker 3: going to lead the project in terms of results, which
- 35:34Speaker 3: is Quaerero. But you've got other guys behind the scenes
- 35:37Speaker 3: that are making a real impact. And the other factor
- 35:39Speaker 3: on Jack before he's had wrapped. The jackpart of this
- 35:41Speaker 3: up is that I think the fact that you've got
- 35:44Speaker 3: one more year of these rules in twenty six before
- 35:47Speaker 3: you move into twenty seven and kind of the great
- 35:48Speaker 3: unknown with the big reset, the fact you've got continuity
- 35:52Speaker 3: and Yamaha's clearly made progress year on year. It would
- 35:56Speaker 3: be stunning if they didn't keep Jack because I feel
- 35:59Speaker 3: that he's doing everything he needs to do in terms
- 36:03Speaker 3: of impact at that manufacturer. I mean, he scored less
- 36:05Speaker 3: points at this time of the year than he'd scored
- 36:06Speaker 3: at KTM last year, but the whole KTM thing last
- 36:08Speaker 3: year felt that he was dead man walking, right. You
- 36:10Speaker 3: kind of knew that he was out there, whereas I
- 36:13Speaker 3: think here he's making a real impact. I don't think
- 36:15Speaker 3: it's any surprise that that bike has been one of
- 36:16Speaker 3: the big improvers of the year because he's doing what
- 36:19Speaker 3: he needs to do.
- 36:20Speaker 1: I can't wait for twenty seven to hurry up, because
- 36:23Speaker 1: you think we were in twenty twenty seven right now,
- 36:25Speaker 1: Fabrico Daura would have won that because there wouldn't have
- 36:30Speaker 1: been the whole rhin eye devisol technology changes everything.
- 36:32Speaker 4: So, like you said, that sounds like another podcast.
- 36:35Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, that's your job to write about all that
- 36:38Speaker 2: text stuff about it.
- 36:40Speaker 1: But oh man, can't wait to see Jack Miller on
- 36:44Speaker 1: a podium this year, Ossie on a podium in Moto GP.
- 36:46Speaker 1: But we had an Aussie on the podium in Moto
- 36:49Speaker 1: too with his maiden Moto to Grand Prix victory. And
- 36:57Speaker 1: I tell you what being there to witness that, to
- 37:00Speaker 1: see him, to see his dad John O, them tears,
- 37:03Speaker 1: the whole team, Wow, just wow, what it was.
- 37:08Speaker 4: It was so good.
- 37:09Speaker 3: I mean, I love the fact that it was the
- 37:11Speaker 3: first race of the night as well, obviously because the
- 37:13Speaker 3: program was slightly jumbled with the Motor GP being the
- 37:15Speaker 3: middle race of the three. But to see the way
- 37:20Speaker 3: Centner won that race, this is not you know, I
- 37:22Speaker 3: heard it described as, you know, the Stephen Bradbury way
- 37:24Speaker 3: for everyone to knock each other off and you know
- 37:26Speaker 3: we're a gold medal. It's not how it quite worked
- 37:29Speaker 3: because it was a strange Motor two race and that
- 37:31Speaker 3: you don't often get big packs battling for the lead
- 37:34Speaker 3: in Moto two like this, but at Silverston you do.
- 37:36Speaker 3: It's just a nature of that particular track. And there
- 37:39Speaker 3: were five of them in that pack for the entire race,
- 37:43Speaker 3: and they each gave as good as they got. But
- 37:44Speaker 3: you know, I just never led that race until the
- 37:46Speaker 3: second last quarter. He certainly timed it right. But one
- 37:49Speaker 3: of the things I loved about this was that he
- 37:52Speaker 3: looked at the two guys that were ahead of him
- 37:54Speaker 3: on the final lap. You've got Aaron Connett, and anyone
- 37:57Speaker 3: who's got tattoos up to his jawline, he can probably
- 38:00Speaker 3: tell the way he's going to fight in a last
- 38:02Speaker 3: lab battle. There's a certain tell with a guy's eg
- 38:04Speaker 3: with that situation. He's also an established guy who isn't
- 38:07Speaker 3: going to be pushed around on the last lap, particularly
- 38:09Speaker 3: when he's racing against a young kid that's come up
- 38:12Speaker 3: from Moto III last year and is starting to pull
- 38:14Speaker 3: up trees. And David Alonso, who we talked about Alonso
- 38:17Speaker 3: last year. He's the next big Motor GP staff of mine.
- 38:19Speaker 3: Once he gets himself in there, you knew there were
- 38:22Speaker 3: going to be fireworks on that last lap because Connett
- 38:25Speaker 3: was just not going to sit there and say, well
- 38:26Speaker 3: after you to David Alonzo, it's like, you want to
- 38:29Speaker 3: race at the front end Motor two in the last lap, Well,
- 38:31Speaker 3: this is how this works. And I love the fact
- 38:34Speaker 3: that Ags saw this was coming and positioned himself in
- 38:38Speaker 3: the perfect place if it all went wrong, keyword being
- 38:42Speaker 3: if he was there to sweep up and take the victory.
- 38:46Speaker 3: It was brilliantly executed given what was on the line
- 38:49Speaker 3: for him as a first time Grand Prix winner, and
- 38:51Speaker 3: it happened so fast. And the funniest part about this,
- 38:54Speaker 3: and you can take our listeners behind the curtain a
- 38:56Speaker 3: little bit here because you're.
- 38:57Speaker 4: On the ground.
- 38:58Speaker 3: The Stilveston press room is in possibly the silliest place
- 39:01Speaker 3: of any racetrack of the entire world, because it takes
- 39:03Speaker 3: about one hundred years to get anywhere I remember going there.
- 39:06Speaker 3: We couldn't actually see the circuit at one point. I
- 39:08Speaker 3: don't know whether they fix that or not. It's still
- 39:09Speaker 3: pretty hard to work out what's going on. But with
- 39:12Speaker 3: all that excitement going on, there were plenty of Australians
- 39:14Speaker 3: that were watching it happening in real time, but you
- 39:16Speaker 3: weren't one of them.
- 39:18Speaker 1: No, no, I was running down. I was saying to
- 39:21Speaker 1: Matt that with our whole last lap, I'm thinking, oh
- 39:24Speaker 1: Sin is probably going to get on.
- 39:25Speaker 2: The podium, and I'm filming.
- 39:27Speaker 1: Some vlogs and social content for Fox Motorsports. So let
- 39:30Speaker 1: me head on down and catch center and park Ferme.
- 39:33Speaker 1: And as I'm going down, like you said, you can't
- 39:35Speaker 1: see what's happening in Philip Island, for example, as a
- 39:37Speaker 1: track where you can see the racetrack from the media center,
- 39:42Speaker 1: but Silverstone is not. And I'm running down and I
- 39:44Speaker 1: can hear everyone like screaming and getting really excited.
- 39:47Speaker 2: I could hear the grand stands off the main street.
- 39:50Speaker 1: And I come on down and I look at the
- 39:52Speaker 1: big screen and I see that Senter's one. So I've
- 39:54Speaker 1: missed all the on track action from Cener getting into
- 39:57Speaker 1: the lead. But all I was thinking the whole time
- 40:00Speaker 1: was obviously Alonzo and Cannett, and we know what Alonso's like.
- 40:03Speaker 1: But I'm also thinking of Marrera against Senna because those
- 40:06Speaker 1: who have exchanged quite a lot, thinking back to Thailand
- 40:09Speaker 1: in round one, and I know that they want to
- 40:12Speaker 1: get their elbows out with each other. Shall we say,
- 40:14Speaker 1: they're not afraid to send it to one another there, so,
- 40:18Speaker 1: but watching just the raw emotion and when I spoke
- 40:22Speaker 1: to Senna in the broadcast is set after for Fox Motorsport,
- 40:27Speaker 1: I said, what was it like when you.
- 40:29Speaker 2: Realized you had won? What was it like? And he
- 40:31Speaker 2: said he just had to stop when he was in tears.
- 40:34Speaker 2: And for those of you who.
- 40:35Speaker 1: Know Sona, and he's quite a serious character, as we've
- 40:39Speaker 1: spoken to him on the pod before, you know, he's
- 40:41Speaker 1: very straightforward and very focused on what he wants. And
- 40:44Speaker 1: for him to say that he's led out a bit
- 40:46Speaker 1: of emotion is wow. Okay, you can see what this
- 40:50Speaker 1: means to him. The whole team where there to celebrate,
- 40:52Speaker 1: even his teammate Manu, who crashed out earlier in the race,
- 40:56Speaker 1: to celebrate with him. So once again it's that camaraderie there.
- 41:00Speaker 1: You can see them all working really together. But the
- 41:03Speaker 1: center he's had, you know, multiple podiums already now we've seen,
- 41:07Speaker 1: but now it's that victory. Okay, here's our hope for
- 41:10Speaker 1: the next Aussie and somroto GP and if we can
- 41:13Speaker 1: keep progressing on this trajectory, he's going to get there well.
- 41:16Speaker 3: And you can understand why he reacted the way that
- 41:18Speaker 3: he did afterwards because he led the race for about
- 41:21Speaker 3: two and a half seconds, so there's a bit of
- 41:23Speaker 3: process after the race because like, oh, I've just won
- 41:25Speaker 3: by first grold breed. If you're ever got a win
- 41:27Speaker 3: a first Grold prie, that'd be the way to do it.
- 41:29Speaker 3: But I just am really impressed with the way he's
- 41:32Speaker 3: going about it because it's not just this flash in
- 41:34Speaker 3: the pan, like oh, he's on the podium. Like Philip
- 41:36Speaker 3: Biol last year was amazing, but it was a bit
- 41:38Speaker 3: of an outlier, let's be honest, and you know, because
- 41:41Speaker 3: it came from kind of nowhere and he did. You know,
- 41:42Speaker 3: he's very good all weekend there, but it wasn't like
- 41:44Speaker 3: he was on this huge run of competing for podiums.
- 41:47Speaker 3: You're almost surprised now when he's not up the front
- 41:49Speaker 3: because it looks completely legit.
- 41:51Speaker 4: But one thing I did love.
- 41:52Speaker 3: I mean, this is one of the things I love
- 41:54Speaker 3: about this championship in that the international nature of Moto GP.
- 41:57Speaker 3: An Australian, a brazil and a Colombian on the podium.
- 42:02Speaker 3: It sounds like the first line of a bad joke,
- 42:04Speaker 3: doesn't it. An Australian, a Colombian and a Brazilian.
- 42:06Speaker 4: Walk into a bar.
- 42:07Speaker 3: But the three of them, you know, no Spanish Italian riders.
- 42:10Speaker 4: You know. Jake Dixon wasn't there.
- 42:12Speaker 3: He's normally so good at silver, so that it was
- 42:13Speaker 3: just so bizarre to see those three flags going up
- 42:16Speaker 3: behind the podium ceremony. But the best part about it
- 42:19Speaker 3: was that the flag in the middle, the one that
- 42:20Speaker 3: was the highest, was the Australian flag.
- 42:24Speaker 1: And of course he did this showy on the podium
- 42:26Speaker 1: which we had supposed the.
- 42:28Speaker 2: Fox Motorsports Socials.
- 42:29Speaker 1: That was a standard Australian little nod there. But I
- 42:33Speaker 1: think routes to stend on his mad Moto IWO victory
- 42:37Speaker 1: and obviously Moto three unfortunate events for our Aussie. Joel
- 42:42Speaker 1: can also with that DNF Joel when I was talking
- 42:46Speaker 1: to him on Thursday as well. He was saying he's
- 42:48Speaker 1: feeling really confident the runs that he's been having so
- 42:51Speaker 1: far this season. You know, he's just feeling out along
- 42:53Speaker 1: with the bike, and this was a track that he
- 42:56Speaker 1: felt really confident going into.
- 42:57Speaker 2: And then we see that on Sundays.
- 43:00Speaker 1: You know, like you said, you've got to take the
- 43:02Speaker 1: positives from the vat and when you can. But Joel,
- 43:05Speaker 1: he's on track and he's working hard to potentially get
- 43:10Speaker 1: a higher championship position this year.
- 43:13Speaker 3: Yeah, and crashing from the lead as well at the
- 43:14Speaker 3: same quarter where Agis had gotten in front about ninety
- 43:17Speaker 3: minutes before that. So I have all the places to
- 43:19Speaker 3: do it. But you know, we talked about this last
- 43:21Speaker 3: week after he'd led for so long at Lemont. There
- 43:24Speaker 3: is going to be a Grand Prix win.
- 43:25Speaker 4: For him this year.
- 43:26Speaker 3: He's just been too good and too consistent and too
- 43:29Speaker 3: fast to not have one before the end of this year.
- 43:32Speaker 3: And it was still quite early in the race at Silverstone.
- 43:35Speaker 3: We know that Motor three can be a complete fist
- 43:37Speaker 3: fight for twenty laps there, so who knows where that
- 43:40Speaker 3: would have ended up for him, But you can just
- 43:42Speaker 3: see it like there's a confidence and a belief there
- 43:45Speaker 3: now he knows he's legit at the front of that championship.
- 43:48Speaker 3: Wouldn't surprise me at all if it happens in the
- 43:50Speaker 3: next two or three rounds. So an unfortunate one. And
- 43:53Speaker 3: what was weird about it too, is you sort of
- 43:55Speaker 3: scratched your head. That's like, huh, when was the last
- 43:57Speaker 3: time he was in a position of advantage and actually
- 44:00Speaker 3: squad did it because it doesn't happen very often with
- 44:01Speaker 3: Joel these days. He's like this super consistent performer. So unfortunate.
- 44:05Speaker 3: I'm sure he was kicking himself because that's not one
- 44:09Speaker 3: of those ones where it was someone else that took
- 44:11Speaker 3: him out or nudged him off the track like it
- 44:12Speaker 3: happened at Lamon at the end of that race.
- 44:14Speaker 4: But it's coming. You can see that it's coming.
- 44:17Speaker 3: It's just unfortunate that a track that he was super
- 44:20Speaker 3: confident at that it didn't work out for him on Sunday.
- 44:22Speaker 4: But I dare say that's not the last of him.
- 44:24Speaker 3: The time we get to Aragon in a couple of weeks,
- 44:26Speaker 3: he'll be right back where he's been all season.
- 44:28Speaker 4: I think.
- 44:30Speaker 1: And Jacob Rolston, he crossed the line in thirteenth. I
- 44:33Speaker 1: believe the same position that he qualified in in Moto three.
- 44:37Speaker 1: But if you assies, if you guys didn't watch the
- 44:40Speaker 1: Moto three race, because I know it wasn't on at
- 44:42Speaker 1: a friendly time zone, shall we say you.
- 44:45Speaker 2: Need to go back and watch it.
- 44:46Speaker 1: Because Ruwaida Rada one the three race from last place
- 44:52Speaker 1: on the grid.
- 44:53Speaker 3: That was only this, well, tell you someone who did
- 44:57Speaker 3: believe it.
- 44:58Speaker 4: Sitting in the.
- 44:59Speaker 3: Wait to go into the press conference after because Moto
- 45:01Speaker 3: GP was the middle of the three races, Mark Marquez
- 45:04Speaker 3: is watching Moto three in the early laps on the
- 45:07Speaker 3: monitor and says Ruada will win this after he'd started
- 45:11Speaker 3: from last on the grid. So if Mark Marquez doesn't,
- 45:13Speaker 3: you know, this whole motorcycle riding thing doesn't work out
- 45:15Speaker 3: for Mark, we'll get a job as like a fortune
- 45:17Speaker 3: teller or something, because that seems to be pretty good
- 45:18Speaker 3: for him. But the fact the fact that he picked
- 45:22Speaker 3: that so early, Ruaida is just on a different level
- 45:24Speaker 3: in that championship this year, it's very rare to think
- 45:28Speaker 3: of guys who can come from the very back or
- 45:30Speaker 3: pit lane starts and actually winning that cat grig because
- 45:32Speaker 3: it's so cutthroat, I mean, you think I remember Pedro
- 45:35Speaker 3: Costa doing that in Qatar really early in his Moto
- 45:37Speaker 3: three career. Came for the pitlane to win a race,
- 45:39Speaker 3: So only the really good ones do that. We know
- 45:42Speaker 3: he's with a good team there, but man from last
- 45:44Speaker 3: on the grid to win. And this wasn't like Lemon
- 45:47Speaker 3: where if he inherited a win because of some silliness
- 45:49Speaker 3: on the final lap which included Joe kel So awesome performance,
- 45:53Speaker 3: but yeah, Mark Marqus picked at about half an hour
- 45:55Speaker 3: before it happened. So if he liked to send us
- 45:57Speaker 3: this week's lottery numbers, then you might your co host
- 46:00Speaker 3: for next week's podcast, because I'll probably be on a
- 46:02Speaker 3: beach somewhere.
