- 0:04Speaker 1: Big things happen when you're pretty, pretty bold, pretty clever,
- 0:08Speaker 1: pretty strong. I'm Danielle Robe and each week my guests
- 0:12Speaker 1: and I have conversations that put a new spin on pretty.
- 0:17Speaker 1: This is pretty smart.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Hello, Hello, Hello, I hope you are.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Having a beautiful week. I hope you had a great
- 0:26Speaker 1: Thanksgiving week. I was in Florida with my family. You
- 0:31Speaker 1: guys know, I'm from Chicago, but my parents are now snowbirds,
- 0:35Speaker 1: so they're in Florida for the winter. So I went
- 0:37Speaker 1: there and I was hanging with my brother and my grandmother,
- 0:41Speaker 1: and I actually just got back a day ago. My
- 0:45Speaker 1: suitcase is sprawled on my living room floor. I am
- 0:50Speaker 1: staring at it, thinking I just have to pack it
- 0:52Speaker 1: back up because I'm headed to New York tomorrow.
- 0:56Speaker 2: And I'm headed to New York to do something that
- 0:59Speaker 2: I can't even believe I'm saying out loud. This is
- 1:02Speaker 2: such a dream of mine. I'm going to sit in
- 1:05Speaker 2: Gloria Steinem's living room. So Gloria's living room is iconic.
- 1:11Speaker 2: It's historically been a meeting space for activism and creativity
- 1:15Speaker 2: and collaboration. It's where feminist thought leaders and writers and
- 1:20Speaker 2: change makers have come together to strategize and organize and
- 1:24Speaker 2: inspire for literally generations. And I feel like that living
- 1:29Speaker 2: room that I've seen photos of for so long embodies
- 1:32Speaker 2: her role as a connector and a trailblazer in the
- 1:37Speaker 2: feminist movement. So I'm just like, I have chills thinking
- 1:39Speaker 2: about it. I'm so excited. I hope that I'm not
- 1:42Speaker 2: like psyching myself up too much.
- 1:44Speaker 1: I just have seen photos online and have always wanted
- 1:49Speaker 1: to sit in that room with her, and you know,
- 1:52Speaker 1: she's in her nineties. I was always like worried that
- 1:55Speaker 1: I wouldn't get there in time. So I'm so excited
- 1:59Speaker 1: for that. And I'm going to report back next week
- 2:00Speaker 1: on the podcast. Anyways, I don't want to ramble on
- 2:04Speaker 1: too long today because this episode is a bit longer
- 2:08Speaker 1: than usual. I think it's like almost an hour, and
- 2:12Speaker 1: that is because our guest is so freaking fun. I
- 2:16Speaker 1: always think it's so dorky when I say freaking I
- 2:18Speaker 1: just don't like to cuss on the podcast curse. Anyways,
- 2:23Speaker 1: she's hilarious, and the producer that edits the podcast always
- 2:29Speaker 1: texts me while she's listening to it the first time,
- 2:32Speaker 1: and I always love her first reactions and she was like,
- 2:34Speaker 1: oh my god, I can't cut anything. Everything's so fun,
- 2:37Speaker 1: it's so good.
- 2:37Speaker 3: I feel like this was a treat that I get
- 2:39Speaker 3: to listen to it.
- 2:40Speaker 1: So I really hope that you all love the episode
- 2:44Speaker 1: as much as Jill did. Jill is our producer. And
- 2:49Speaker 1: one last thing before I jump in today, you all know,
- 2:52Speaker 1: if you've been listening for a while, that I started
- 2:54Speaker 1: doing this thing about a year ago, that if you
- 2:57Speaker 1: send me a screenshot on Instagram or via email Danielle
- 3:03Speaker 1: at beprettysmart dot com, if you send me a screenshot
- 3:06Speaker 1: of a review of the pod that you made or
- 3:10Speaker 1: of you texting it to like an episode to two friends,
- 3:14Speaker 1: then I put you in the Raffle for the week
- 3:16Speaker 1: and I pick one person and zoom with them for
- 3:20Speaker 1: I always say fifteen and ends up being like thirty
- 3:22Speaker 1: or more minutes and chat about your career, your life
- 3:26Speaker 1: and see if there's any value that I can add
- 3:29Speaker 1: to it. So I say that all to say that
- 3:32Speaker 1: that happens weekly. So if you want to chat and
- 3:35Speaker 1: you want to be entered into the Raffle, just just
- 3:37Speaker 1: feel free to screenshot and will be good to go
- 3:40Speaker 1: on that and I'll enter you in the Raffle for
- 3:41Speaker 1: the week.
- 3:42Speaker 2: It's open every single week.
- 3:44Speaker 4: But I say that all to say that there was
- 3:46Speaker 4: a woman that I video chatted with a few weeks
- 3:50Speaker 4: ago named Molly Herford, and I want to give her
- 3:54Speaker 4: a shout.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Out because I think she's doing something amazing. So ninety
- 3:58Speaker 1: percent of female four tis five hundred CEOs played sports
- 4:01Speaker 1: growing up, and keeping that stat in mind, girls drop
- 4:06Speaker 1: out of sports at double the rate that boys do
- 4:09Speaker 1: when they hit puberty. And Mollie's an athlete herself. She's
- 4:12Speaker 1: an avid biker, and so when she learned about those statistics,
- 4:16Speaker 1: Mollie really wanted to do something to change that by
- 4:19Speaker 1: helping girls see themselves in sport and inspiring them to
- 4:22Speaker 1: try new activities. So she did something incredible. She started
- 4:26Speaker 1: her own publishing house. It is so difficult to self publish,
- 4:30Speaker 1: so she published her own book, okay, and then she thought, well,
- 4:35Speaker 1: if I publish my book, why can't I publish all
- 4:38Speaker 1: these other women's books. And she started publishing all of
- 4:43Speaker 1: these awesome books about women in sports and girls in sports.
- 4:48Speaker 1: It's called strong Girl publishing. So if you have a
- 4:51Speaker 1: middle grade girl or young woman in your life, there
- 4:54Speaker 1: are books like the Shred series that are written by
- 4:57Speaker 1: Molly herself or Sprinting Through Step Acts by Micah Powell,
- 5:01Speaker 1: and they're really inspiring the next generation of women athletes.
- 5:05Speaker 1: And this podcast has always been a place of community
- 5:09Speaker 1: and of uplifting one another. And so I love giving
- 5:12Speaker 1: people shout outs when I believe in what they're doing.
- 5:15Speaker 1: And I'm so impressed by her. So if you have this,
- 5:19Speaker 1: especially during the holidays, it's such a great time. If
- 5:21Speaker 1: you have a young woman in your life, check out
- 5:23Speaker 1: the Shred Girl series by Molly Herford and I'll add
- 5:25Speaker 1: the link to our podcast notes. Now it's time to
- 5:30Speaker 1: jump into the episode today. So where do you turn
- 5:36Speaker 1: when you need advice or a recommendation? If you're like
- 5:39Speaker 1: most of us or me, it's social media a lot
- 5:43Speaker 1: of times. It's platforms like TikTok and Instagram and YouTube
- 5:47Speaker 1: that have become our modern day advice columns. Fifty two
- 5:50Speaker 1: percent of gen Z relies on them for everything from
- 5:53Speaker 1: life tips to product recommendations, with one hundred and four
- 5:57Speaker 1: percent spike and TikTok usage for brand and product. Let
- 6:00Speaker 1: me just say that again, one hundred and four percent
- 6:03Speaker 1: spike in TikTok usage for brand and product info.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Wow.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Now, millennials might scroll a little less, but eighty percent
- 6:09Speaker 1: still say they trust influencers, proving that these voices hold
- 6:13Speaker 1: serious sway over how we.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Make our decisions.
- 6:16Speaker 1: But let's talk about who we're listening to on Instagram.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Influencers are typically in their late twenties or thirties.
- 6:23Speaker 3: TikTok.
- 6:24Speaker 1: It's all about eighteen to twenty four year olds. It's
- 6:26Speaker 1: gen z right, and that's why Caroline Bodino, at fifty
- 6:30Speaker 1: two years old, is such a game changer. She's known
- 6:33Speaker 1: to her followers as shop with Caroline, but she's not
- 6:37Speaker 1: your average influencer. Sure, she's the queen of affordable fashion
- 6:41Speaker 1: and style tips, but her real superpower is her honesty.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Usually, when you don't look at the mirror you don't
- 6:46Speaker 3: want to see, you know you don't want to see
- 6:48Speaker 3: or face it. Everyone trying to live up to the Joneses.
- 6:52Speaker 3: Yet nobody knows what's going on behind the Joneses door.
- 6:55Speaker 3: And that's the truth. No one comes home, can't reach him,
- 7:00Speaker 3: not answering, and the doorbell rings and it's our show
- 7:03Speaker 3: for driver, hands me a handwritten letter, calls off the
- 7:06Speaker 3: wady helps the engagement in a letter handed to me
- 7:11Speaker 3: by the doorman, I'm the driver. Everybody wants a secret,
- 7:14Speaker 3: There's absolutely no secret. It is hard work. It is
- 7:17Speaker 3: consistency and its persistence.
- 7:19Speaker 1: It was honestly so hard to pick clips for this
- 7:22Speaker 1: episode intro because Caroline is so real and hilarious, and
- 7:25Speaker 1: I just wanted to pick them all, but I realized
- 7:28Speaker 1: I'll just save them for the episode. And her life
- 7:31Speaker 1: story is wild, it's so fun, and she just shares
- 7:34Speaker 1: it all honestly. She says that that's the only way
- 7:38Speaker 1: you help people is by being honest and learning from it.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Now people start following Caroline for her fashion tips and
- 7:45Speaker 1: her insane jewelry. If you look at her Instagram, she's covered, okay,
- 7:50Speaker 1: but they stay for her truth bombs and you walk
- 7:53Speaker 1: away feeling empowered because with Caroline, it's always about more
- 7:56Speaker 1: than just clothes. She doesn't just talk about trends. She's
- 8:00Speaker 1: diving headfirst into the real stuff motherhood, menopause, money, marriage, love, dating,
- 8:08Speaker 1: things she wished she would have done everything. What I
- 8:11Speaker 1: love is that she talks about parts of womanhood that
- 8:14Speaker 1: don't always get a spotlight.
- 8:15Speaker 3: I always thought the waiting meant it wasn't meant to be.
- 8:19Speaker 3: I always thought the waiting meant it wouldn't work out
- 8:21Speaker 3: for me, or it was like you're never going to
- 8:22Speaker 3: get it. And I realized the waiting was preparing me
- 8:25Speaker 3: to to be able to handle all the challenges that
- 8:28Speaker 3: come with it and to be able to enjoy it
- 8:29Speaker 3: and appreciate it.
- 8:31Speaker 1: She says, middle age is where life really began for her,
- 8:34Speaker 1: and for the first time, she figured out.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Who she truly was.
- 8:38Speaker 1: And now she's on a mission to help women of
- 8:40Speaker 1: all ages embrace their self worth and live unapologetically. From
- 8:45Speaker 1: navigating finances to owning your confidence, Caroline brings the kind
- 8:50Speaker 1: of perspective that makes you stop scrolling and start thinking
- 8:54Speaker 1: and feeling. Caroline is a disruptor in the very best way.
- 9:01Speaker 1: I really think. She proves that life doesn't peak in
- 9:03Speaker 1: your twenties, or your thirties, or your forties or even
- 9:06Speaker 1: your fifties. It peaks when you say it does. She's
- 9:11Speaker 1: here to remind us all that the best is yet
- 9:13Speaker 1: to come, and she's coming in high Caroline Baudina, Welcome
- 9:26Speaker 1: to Pretty Smart.
- 9:27Speaker 3: I'm so happy to be here. Thank you for having
- 9:29Speaker 3: me on her up the room. Oh stop I love
- 9:32Speaker 3: being here and you look so beautiful, and I just
- 9:34Speaker 3: want to say to everyone, this is your caller.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Okay, huge compliment. I'm just saying I've never been so
- 9:39Speaker 1: stressed as to what to wear because I knew you
- 9:42Speaker 1: were going to bring it.
- 9:43Speaker 3: Do you know that so many people will say that
- 9:44Speaker 3: of just like I added so many more necklaces and
- 9:46Speaker 3: I was like, this.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Doesn't really call for a necklace.
- 9:50Speaker 3: I want to give you. You need a stack. I
- 9:53Speaker 3: do want to get you a stack. We're going to
- 9:55Speaker 3: start your stack.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Okay. So people come for the fabulous jewels and the
- 9:59Speaker 1: fabulous clothes. Thing that you say, they stay for the
- 10:01Speaker 1: hard truths. Yeah, I was gonna say, they stay for
- 10:04Speaker 1: the inspiration and advice.
- 10:06Speaker 3: Thank you. Sometimes you're like the motivation, you know, just
- 10:08Speaker 3: because it's you know, you talk about things that most
- 10:10Speaker 3: women aren't really willing to admit or talk about, which
- 10:13Speaker 3: I'm really proud of because I was one of those women. Yeah,
- 10:16Speaker 3: and I didn't always talk about everything, and I think
- 10:18Speaker 3: we grow up being like it's everything's supposed to be
- 10:19Speaker 3: so secretive, like finances, like you know what's going on
- 10:23Speaker 3: in your marriage, all of that, And I'm always like
- 10:25Speaker 3: it was so freeing. It was I think that was
- 10:28Speaker 3: a pivotal point in my life when I was able
- 10:30Speaker 3: to say it all. It took all that shame away
- 10:33Speaker 3: or all that you know, like what people think. I
- 10:35Speaker 3: was like, I don't care.
- 10:36Speaker 1: So you weren't always a truth teller.
- 10:38Speaker 3: Always a truth teller. But I don't think I was
- 10:40Speaker 3: always telling everybody like I wasn't telling that people about
- 10:43Speaker 3: my credit cards, or I wasn't talking about business like
- 10:46Speaker 3: never to me like we might talk about advice, like
- 10:48Speaker 3: I was definitely always the therapist. I was everyone's therapist always,
- 10:51Speaker 3: like people have always called me to tell me all
- 10:54Speaker 3: of their problems. And I love it. I'm a good listener.
- 10:57Speaker 3: I really enjoy it. And I studied psych and so
- 11:00Speaker 3: and I you know, I was going to go to
- 11:01Speaker 3: NYU for my masters, So therapy is something that I love.
- 11:05Speaker 3: So I think there's something in I've always been a
- 11:07Speaker 3: good listener. I've always I'm always honest about my opinion.
- 11:10Speaker 3: I'm brutal when it comes to honesty. But I don't
- 11:13Speaker 3: think I was always so open about everything that went
- 11:16Speaker 3: on in my parents' lives or how we grew up,
- 11:19Speaker 3: or a lot of the hard I don't think we
- 11:22Speaker 3: admit or talk about.
- 11:23Speaker 1: So what changed.
- 11:26Speaker 3: COVID And it was weird. So my dad got you know,
- 11:29Speaker 3: almost eight years ago now, my dad my mom calls
- 11:32Speaker 3: me one day and this is really how it began.
- 11:34Speaker 3: And I think this is what triggered my brain. I
- 11:37Speaker 3: got a phone call one day. I was, you know,
- 11:39Speaker 3: two kids under the age of I mean two and
- 11:40Speaker 3: a four year old, no help, you know, stressed out
- 11:43Speaker 3: of my mind, going through menopause, so gaining weight, not
- 11:47Speaker 3: feeling like myself, hot flashes, moody, Like truthfully, you do
- 11:51Speaker 3: not feel like yourself. It's scary and imagine for your
- 11:54Speaker 3: partner because you do kind of change. So there was
- 11:56Speaker 3: all this kind of stress. I don't think I was
- 11:58Speaker 3: like feeling my best, looking, my best. I was just
- 12:00Speaker 3: getting by. I was just getting by. And it's sad
- 12:03Speaker 3: to think now because I'm like, thank god I didn't
- 12:07Speaker 3: stay there. I am just like so grateful that I
- 12:10Speaker 3: woke up. But you know, one day, I'm in the
- 12:12Speaker 3: middle of like, you know, taking.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Care of the kids.
- 12:14Speaker 3: Whatever.
- 12:14Speaker 1: You felt like you were sleepwalking a zombie.
- 12:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I was a zombie walking through life. Was I
- 12:19Speaker 3: enjoying myself? I don't know. Was I really happy? Did
- 12:23Speaker 3: I really want to be at school of volunteering all
- 12:25Speaker 3: the time and being the art teacher when I can
- 12:28Speaker 3: only draw a stick figure out. I was kind of
- 12:29Speaker 3: like I was, you know, always with the kids and
- 12:32Speaker 3: at school, and I thought that was the only way
- 12:34Speaker 3: to be a good mom. I really felt like I
- 12:35Speaker 3: needed to just give all of myself and I did,
- 12:39Speaker 3: and in that I think I lost that best version
- 12:41Speaker 3: of me because I was giving it to everybody else.
- 12:44Speaker 3: So oxygen was being put out. I was not putting
- 12:47Speaker 3: it back in. So I would look in the mirror.
- 12:49Speaker 3: I would probably walk past the mirror, probably didn't pay
- 12:51Speaker 3: attention to the mirror, because usually when you don't look
- 12:53Speaker 3: in the mirror, you don't want to see, you know,
- 12:54Speaker 3: you don't want to see or face it. And I
- 12:58Speaker 3: realized one day the phone rings, my mom is hysterical,
- 13:01Speaker 3: like hysterical. That's scary. You know what it is when
- 13:04Speaker 3: your mom calls you hysterical And she said, dad has Alzheimer's.
- 13:07Speaker 3: You know, we don't know what to do. There's two
- 13:08Speaker 3: years of taxes he didn't pay. I don't know where
- 13:10Speaker 3: the money is. I don't know where anything is. Did
- 13:13Speaker 3: not have a clue how to take care of herself.
- 13:16Speaker 3: Like she literally was like, it's all on you. You have
- 13:19Speaker 3: to take care of us. He doesn't know what he's doing.
- 13:21Speaker 3: And I was like, I mean my hands were trembling,
- 13:23Speaker 3: and I just remember being like I don't know if
- 13:25Speaker 3: I can handle all this. I think I'm gonna a
- 13:26Speaker 3: nervous breakdown. And I was like, mom, i'll call you back,
- 13:29Speaker 3: let me figure this out. And I walked past the mirror.
- 13:31Speaker 3: I don't know what made me look. I don't know
- 13:33Speaker 3: what made me look. I will never forget the moment
- 13:36Speaker 3: of literally just looking and I was like, who is that.
- 13:39Speaker 3: I was like, I don't even recognize you. I was
- 13:42Speaker 3: like you don't look happy. You're not smiling, you're not dressed,
- 13:45Speaker 3: like you're not being positive or like excited. There's something
- 13:49Speaker 3: like you look dead. Yeah, And I was like okay, no,
- 13:52Speaker 3: And I just remember looking in the mirror and I
- 13:54Speaker 3: literally was like, I'm going to bring you back. I'm
- 13:56Speaker 3: going to bring you back to life. I'm going to
- 13:58Speaker 3: bring Caroline back, like that best version, I mean, not
- 14:00Speaker 3: this Caroline, Yeah, like that one that I was proud of,
- 14:04Speaker 3: you know, And I was just like whatever, that takes,
- 14:07Speaker 3: and in that I started to kind of be like, Okay,
- 14:10Speaker 3: what makes me happy? Like I've talked to John and
- 14:11Speaker 3: I was like, you know what, me stressed all morning
- 14:14Speaker 3: and he was traveling all the time. I was like,
- 14:16Speaker 3: I need a minute, Like I need to be able
- 14:18Speaker 3: to get a little work out in, Like I need
- 14:20Speaker 3: to be able to have a little time with friends,
- 14:21Speaker 3: Like I need to be able to get dressed and
- 14:24Speaker 3: look good. I was like, when did I stop looking good?
- 14:26Speaker 3: I've always loved fashion. I've always been smiling and happy
- 14:29Speaker 3: and like excited to do things and a really positive person.
- 14:33Speaker 3: Love friends, love going out, love travel Like it was
- 14:36Speaker 3: one of those things where I was like, so I
- 14:37Speaker 3: got married and head kids and I you just don't
- 14:40Speaker 3: do any of that anymore.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Do you think he noticed that you had changed? I
- 14:44Speaker 1: think so, because he.
- 14:46Speaker 3: Would consistently tell me you should do something. He'd always
- 14:49Speaker 3: be like, you're really smart. Find something that you love,
- 14:52Speaker 3: do something you love. I see that at school, you're
- 14:54Speaker 3: not happy being there all the time. You volunteering all
- 14:56Speaker 3: the time. That's not your thing. You love the boys.
- 14:58Speaker 3: You can still be the best mom. You don't have
- 15:00Speaker 3: to sacrifice it all and I'd be like, I know,
- 15:02Speaker 3: you know, no one's there, and I need to watch
- 15:04Speaker 3: and I need to know what's going on, and you know,
- 15:06Speaker 3: just making every excuse to not face it because I knew,
- 15:09Speaker 3: deep down, I knew I was smart, Like before I
- 15:13Speaker 3: met John, I was independent, I was smart, I was working,
- 15:16Speaker 3: I was making money. So why did I all of
- 15:18Speaker 3: a sudden not want to face me having to get
- 15:21Speaker 3: to work.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Well, what I think is we have to rewind. I
- 15:25Speaker 1: think since almost start from the beginning of your story
- 15:28Speaker 1: for it all to really make sense, because you've had
- 15:32Speaker 1: almost everybody in your life tell you you were smart
- 15:34Speaker 1: at one point or another, I have didn't listen, and
- 15:37Speaker 1: you didn't really listen. I think now you finally believe it.
- 15:41Speaker 3: Fully believe it. Like it's weird. I feel I don't
- 15:44Speaker 3: want to cry.
- 15:45Speaker 1: See this is where this is the crying podcast, you know.
- 15:47Speaker 3: So I'm like, shit, I did not expect that. Like,
- 15:50Speaker 3: I feel so empowered, I feel I am so capable.
- 15:54Speaker 3: I know where the money is, I know how to
- 15:56Speaker 3: take care. God forbid, something happened to John. I don't
- 15:59Speaker 3: have that insecure. I don't have that you know fear.
- 16:03Speaker 3: I'm kind of like, yeah, I'll be fine. I'll figure
- 16:05Speaker 3: it out. I will be fine. And there is so
- 16:08Speaker 3: much power, especially I think in a woman, to know
- 16:12Speaker 3: that you can take care of yourself, because I do
- 16:14Speaker 3: think that we are told always to marry, that somebody
- 16:18Speaker 3: else will take care of you, that somebody else is
- 16:21Speaker 3: going to make you happy, that their success is your success,
- 16:24Speaker 3: which I don't believe. Yeah, again, his money is not
- 16:27Speaker 3: your money. Like to a point, it's not like at
- 16:30Speaker 3: the end of the day he walks away, he meets somebody.
- 16:33Speaker 3: I've seen it. I see it with my friends. I've
- 16:35Speaker 3: seen it all. I've seen it with my own parents.
- 16:36Speaker 3: Like you see the cheating, you see the unhappiness, you
- 16:39Speaker 3: see my mom never leaving.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Okay, we have to talk about that because I think
- 16:43Speaker 1: a lot of what you talk about on your which
- 16:46Speaker 1: I love. I love your podcast, but a lot of
- 16:48Speaker 1: what you talk about are hard earned lessons, and they're
- 16:51Speaker 1: hard earned because you grew up in a really tumultuous household.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Yes to Cuban parents in Manhattan, and your dad had
- 16:59Speaker 1: a pretty significant job. He made a lot of money. Yea, Yes,
- 17:02Speaker 1: talk to me about the dynamic in your house.
- 17:05Speaker 3: It was really hard. I think people thought We had
- 17:08Speaker 3: everything because I think it looks good. You're pulling up
- 17:10Speaker 3: in a limousine to school, you know, and you know,
- 17:12Speaker 3: my dad's a president of Univision and it's like a
- 17:14Speaker 3: big deal, and the networks and this and the you know,
- 17:16Speaker 3: being in the magazines and all this stuff. What's insane
- 17:20Speaker 3: is no one knows what goes on behind closed doors.
- 17:22Speaker 3: And that's why I'm always like, you know, everyone trying
- 17:24Speaker 3: to live up to the Joneses, yet nobody knows what's
- 17:27Speaker 3: going on behind the Joneses door. And that's the truth.
- 17:30Speaker 3: So we had money, we had you know, experiences, we
- 17:33Speaker 3: would travel, my dad would We were spoiled, like he
- 17:36Speaker 3: bought us anything we wanted. My mom the anxiety I
- 17:40Speaker 3: felt every day walking in because unfortunately my dad was
- 17:44Speaker 3: you know, listen, he passed away. He's an incredible human being,
- 17:47Speaker 3: an incredible provider. He was a shitty husband. He was
- 17:50Speaker 3: like love the ladies. And I'm not saying, you know,
- 17:53Speaker 3: my mom was tough. She was like she's tough, but
- 17:56Speaker 3: there was something in there that there was this lack
- 17:58Speaker 3: of respect and he could get away with it because
- 18:01Speaker 3: she wasn't going anywhere, so she can make as big
- 18:04Speaker 3: of a stink as she wanted. She could curse, she
- 18:06Speaker 3: could tell him all, she could pretend she's throwing him out,
- 18:09Speaker 3: but she always took him back. And it's because she
- 18:11Speaker 3: did not know how to make her own money. She
- 18:13Speaker 3: was she had the fear always, and she's gorgeous, she's smart.
- 18:17Speaker 3: She made every house purchase, like she purchased all of
- 18:20Speaker 3: our things. She's the one who pushed him. He would
- 18:22Speaker 3: have never taken the job if it wasn't for her.
- 18:25Speaker 3: She's the one that took care of us, supported us,
- 18:27Speaker 3: raised the children. Yet she doesn't think she's smart, she
- 18:31Speaker 3: doesn't think she's capable. She could till this day she'll
- 18:33Speaker 3: be like something happens, she'll be like, Oh, I'm so stupid,
- 18:37Speaker 3: And I'm like, Mom, why are you calling yourself stupid?
- 18:39Speaker 3: Like you realized you're gonna believe that one day if
- 18:41Speaker 3: that's all you say to yourself, right, And I think
- 18:43Speaker 3: she did her whole life till this day, like always
- 18:47Speaker 3: depending on my dad, always chasing my dad, always looking
- 18:51Speaker 3: for my dad, always screaming at my dad. So at home,
- 18:55Speaker 3: we would lock ourselves in our room. I have many
- 18:57Speaker 3: memories of being in my closet with my arms wrapped
- 19:00Speaker 3: around my knees and I would just rock myself just
- 19:03Speaker 3: to calm down. The screaming would be so bad. And
- 19:06Speaker 3: the insults that, you know, it was awful to hear,
- 19:08Speaker 3: to be honest with you, to hear a man insult
- 19:11Speaker 3: a woman your mother, your mother, And then we would
- 19:14Speaker 3: hear insults about us too, don't think, you know, like
- 19:17Speaker 3: oh those damn girls are like, oh, you know, and
- 19:20Speaker 3: you would hear it. And to say that words don't hurt,
- 19:22Speaker 3: or that you don't ever remember, like you remember, I
- 19:25Speaker 3: had gastro problems all of high school. I was I
- 19:28Speaker 3: went to every gastroentrologist. No one could figure out what
- 19:30Speaker 3: was wrong with me. Yeah, and it was like pure anxiety.
- 19:32Speaker 3: I think every day we never knew what we were
- 19:35Speaker 3: going to walk into. We never knew when he wasn't
- 19:37Speaker 3: going to come home or something was going to happen,
- 19:39Speaker 3: or to the point where seventy two was the last affair. Hi,
- 19:46Speaker 3: I was a grown My husband unfortunately broke into the
- 19:48Speaker 3: computer because my mom asked him to. This is why
- 19:52Speaker 3: you don't marry the tech guy. My mom forced him
- 19:54Speaker 3: to break into my dad's computer. Yeah, and we found
- 19:57Speaker 3: a secret.
- 19:57Speaker 1: Email at seventy two years two years old.
- 20:00Speaker 3: She was thirty four with a young child, and he
- 20:04Speaker 3: was the president of the company and she was the employee.
- 20:07Speaker 1: Okay, so this is hard, really hard. As a kid,
- 20:11Speaker 1: you love both of your parents regardless of what's going on.
- 20:15Speaker 3: I sided with my mom. The one thing that my
- 20:17Speaker 3: mom did, which I personally I think is like one
- 20:19Speaker 3: of her greatest faults, to be brutally honest with you.
- 20:22Speaker 3: She would tell me I was her best friend. I
- 20:24Speaker 3: have been her caretaker my entire life. Like she wasn't
- 20:27Speaker 3: the mom. I was more the mom. Yeah, and I
- 20:30Speaker 3: was always and I think that's why I'm happy. I
- 20:32Speaker 3: always I feel like somebody had to be happy. So
- 20:35Speaker 3: because my sister's not a happy person, she's very depressed.
- 20:37Speaker 3: She definitely has a hard time. It's hard, it's really hard.
- 20:40Speaker 3: And I think I was the only person that I'd
- 20:42Speaker 3: be like my mom, it's okay, let's do something, or
- 20:44Speaker 3: let's go shopping or let's you know, was always like
- 20:45Speaker 3: just trying to get her to be happy. Still my job.
- 20:48Speaker 1: What kind of dating or marriage advice did she give
- 20:51Speaker 1: you growing up? Because I think those words stick with
- 20:54Speaker 1: us as daughters.
- 20:55Speaker 3: You know, she It's funny because in high school she
- 20:59Speaker 3: literally told me at fifteen years old, like maybe it
- 21:02Speaker 3: was like sixteen, like something happened with the boyfriend. Yeah,
- 21:05Speaker 3: and she's listen, your night in Shining Armor isn't coming.
- 21:09Speaker 3: So I was like, wait what. She's like, yeah, it
- 21:11Speaker 3: doesn't exist. She was like, so get it together, and
- 21:15Speaker 3: she's like, why are you crying over this idiot?
- 21:17Speaker 1: He cheated on you?
- 21:17Speaker 3: You cry over some day. She's like, if you mess
- 21:19Speaker 3: up and he's this great guy and you screw it up,
- 21:23Speaker 3: cry all you want. You're an idiot, But it's the
- 21:25Speaker 3: idiot like cheated on you and he's a piece of shit.
- 21:27Speaker 3: She's what are you crying over? How embarrassing. She's you
- 21:29Speaker 3: need to be stronger, tougher, and she's like, let it go.
- 21:32Speaker 1: And if she's saying it to you in Spanish, in Spanish.
- 21:35Speaker 3: And literally would be like, you've got one day. You've
- 21:37Speaker 3: got one day to cry Tomorrow. I don't want to
- 21:39Speaker 3: hear about this. And I was like, okay, definitely made
- 21:42Speaker 3: you tough, definitely. But then later as I graduate and
- 21:45Speaker 3: I go to college, it was all marry rich, marry rich,
- 21:49Speaker 3: marry well, Mary Well, and I don't know what does
- 21:51Speaker 3: that do to you? When you hear that, it felt
- 21:55Speaker 3: like so it was awful because that wasn't my personality.
- 22:00Speaker 3: I was very independent. I think my sister did that.
- 22:04Speaker 3: I was like, I don't ever want to live like you.
- 22:07Speaker 3: I don't ever want to have this kind of marriage.
- 22:09Speaker 3: I don't want to grow up in this kind of
- 22:10Speaker 3: home like I was. When I graduated. I was like, see, yeah,
- 22:14Speaker 3: like I did not want any part of that. And
- 22:16Speaker 3: it was every summer I'd be gone the entire summer.
- 22:18Speaker 3: I would come to my parents and be like, there's
- 22:20Speaker 3: this program for two months and this is where I
- 22:22Speaker 3: want you to send me. And I'd be gone every
- 22:24Speaker 3: single summer because I was like it was it was
- 22:27Speaker 3: stressful at home. Yeah, And so when you hear mary Well,
- 22:29Speaker 3: mary Well, and I'm like what did that do for you?
- 22:32Speaker 3: I'm like, so that I can end up like this
- 22:34Speaker 3: where I don't know how to take care of myself
- 22:36Speaker 3: and I don't know what I'm doing. And then I
- 22:38Speaker 3: met some man's becking call. I was like, absolutely not.
- 22:42Speaker 3: That's where the necklace comes from. I'm always like absolutely not.
- 22:46Speaker 3: I was like, now I want to travel, I want
- 22:49Speaker 3: to live well I want to make my own money.
- 22:51Speaker 3: I was like, I want to. I was like, I
- 22:52Speaker 3: want to do everything, but marry well, cut too, I
- 22:57Speaker 3: get engaged to millionaire.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Okay, so this fell into the trap just so.
- 23:01Speaker 3: You know, well it's it was the pressure. It was
- 23:06Speaker 3: the pressure. It was like, as independent as I was,
- 23:08Speaker 3: you always want to please your parents. I don't know why.
- 23:11Speaker 3: You know, they talk about it. Everything they sacrificed for you.
- 23:13Speaker 3: They came to this country with nothing, They built all
- 23:16Speaker 3: of this. Do you really want to start with nothing?
- 23:17Speaker 3: Do you really want to go back to that? And
- 23:19Speaker 3: I was like, well no, And mom was like, who's
- 23:21Speaker 3: going to pay for all this? Look what you're used to?
- 23:23Speaker 3: Look at all the trips you take, and I was like,
- 23:25Speaker 3: she has a good point. It was kind of like
- 23:26Speaker 3: all right. And then all your friends. They put you
- 23:28Speaker 3: in a good school, so you're surrounded by good people.
- 23:30Speaker 3: All of those people are now marrying well, and it's
- 23:33Speaker 3: you get influenced by your friends, by your parents. The
- 23:36Speaker 3: pressure you feel too. I always felt like I just
- 23:38Speaker 3: wanted to please them like I did.
- 23:40Speaker 1: But he wasn't a nice guy.
- 23:41Speaker 3: You know, he wasn't a bad guy. He was more
- 23:44Speaker 3: you know, he had manic depression, so he definitely was
- 23:47Speaker 3: like just a roller coaster ride. And for me, what
- 23:50Speaker 3: I realized most is that I like stability. So I
- 23:52Speaker 3: realized I was stepping into the same kind of dynamic
- 23:55Speaker 3: because there was no stability at home. The rug could
- 23:57Speaker 3: be pulled from under you anytime. That was the same here.
- 24:00Speaker 3: He would work in the stock market, whether he lost
- 24:02Speaker 3: a million, made a million, it dependent on his mood.
- 24:05Speaker 3: It depended how he was going to treat you. It
- 24:07Speaker 3: dependent like what was going to happen? And I remember
- 24:09Speaker 3: anxiety again, pure anxiety again. I never felt like comfortable
- 24:13Speaker 3: as he would come home and be like what happened?
- 24:15Speaker 3: You know what I mean? And you'd be like waiting.
- 24:17Speaker 3: Hated it like I hated it, And it was one
- 24:20Speaker 3: of these things I think I had to hate it
- 24:22Speaker 3: so much that I realized this is so unhealthy.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Like how old are you at this point, twenty six
- 24:28Speaker 1: years old? And how does that relationship end?
- 24:32Speaker 3: Are you ready for this? I am more the fact
- 24:34Speaker 3: that I even admitted this. I admitted it already on instant.
- 24:37Speaker 3: Everybody already knows. But it was like, so I was
- 24:39Speaker 3: already you know, having hesitations. We had the engagement party going.
- 24:43Speaker 3: We had the house in the Hamptons. He had got
- 24:45Speaker 3: me a chauffeur for my birthday. I mean, this is
- 24:46Speaker 3: the way we're living. Okay, helicopter to the Hamptons. So
- 24:49Speaker 3: my parents are like, you're set. I don't care what
- 24:52Speaker 3: he's like, this is who you're gonna make I was like, okay,
- 24:55Speaker 3: I guess we're gonna make this work. Two nights before
- 24:58Speaker 3: the engagement party, phone rings in the morning and it's
- 25:02Speaker 3: his ex girlfriend and she's like, is that on that?
- 25:04Speaker 3: And I was like, you know, you know it's nine fifteen,
- 25:07Speaker 3: the market's opening, so you know he's not here. Call
- 25:09Speaker 3: him at the office and I hung up and I
- 25:11Speaker 3: remember calling him and he's like what and everything's open.
- 25:14Speaker 3: I was like, what the fuck is like this girl
- 25:17Speaker 3: calling here? And he was like, I'll call you back,
- 25:19Speaker 3: like I'll be done, and I was like, okay. I
- 25:22Speaker 3: was so pissed. So we hung up that night.
- 25:25Speaker 1: He did you feel triggered? Oh my god, I'm living
- 25:28Speaker 1: my mom's life. Literally, Like I was kind of like,
- 25:30Speaker 1: are you joking me? You're gonna disrespect me?
- 25:32Speaker 3: This girl? Who do you think? I was definitely like,
- 25:34Speaker 3: because I did have an ego, like I wasn't the
- 25:37Speaker 3: reason we would be. We weren't as compatible. I was
- 25:40Speaker 3: never willing to kiss his ass, and that is something
- 25:43Speaker 3: that my mom would kiss his ass, but my mom
- 25:44Speaker 3: would cut my dad's steak, so he's cheating, but she's
- 25:46Speaker 3: cutting his steak. I would never do that, So I
- 25:49Speaker 3: was always It was very triggering for him because he
- 25:51Speaker 3: wanted me to be like, you're so amazing, You're so written,
- 25:54Speaker 3: and I never was. So I was very much who
- 25:56Speaker 3: was calling, like I am not dealing with this. So
- 25:59Speaker 3: he had a business dinner and he was going to
- 26:01Speaker 3: be home right after. Needless to say, hours go by,
- 26:04Speaker 3: no one comes home, can't reach him, the phone's not answering,
- 26:08Speaker 3: and the doorbell rings and it's our chauffeur driver love.
- 26:11Speaker 3: The guy hands me a handwritten letter, calls off the weddy.
- 26:15Speaker 3: He the engagement in a letter handed to me by
- 26:20Speaker 3: the doorman and the driver, and that was it, and
- 26:23Speaker 3: it just said love you and your family is all great,
- 26:25Speaker 3: but he wanted to meet. He was like going to
- 26:27Speaker 3: reconsider going back to the girl.
- 26:29Speaker 1: The X and so you go and you're kind of
- 26:32Speaker 1: rebuilding your life.
- 26:33Speaker 3: Now after that, I literally the good thing about me
- 26:35Speaker 3: is never look back once you screw me over, like
- 26:38Speaker 3: we're done, and so he really he did try to
- 26:40Speaker 3: get back together. He realized that was a mistake. Blah
- 26:42Speaker 3: blah blah. That night, packed all my things. I was
- 26:45Speaker 3: out within twenty four hours. He never heard from me again,
- 26:48Speaker 3: and he tried and he called and he was like
- 26:50Speaker 3: you are brutal, and I was like never again, No,
- 26:54Speaker 3: like not a chance. And at that point I got
- 26:57Speaker 3: a call about a Spanish soap opera filming in my
- 27:00Speaker 3: Iami and my dad was like, you're gonna go do this?
- 27:03Speaker 3: And I was like what. I was like, absolutely not,
- 27:06Speaker 3: because I really it was a little bit of once
- 27:07Speaker 3: you leave, it's really over right, Like no matter what
- 27:10Speaker 3: anyone says, like, there is a real pang that you
- 27:13Speaker 3: were like, okay, I'm really cutting this off. And my
- 27:16Speaker 3: dad's like, well, if you really want to work, and
- 27:17Speaker 3: you really want you say you want to make money
- 27:18Speaker 3: and you want to work, then let's see you work.
- 27:21Speaker 3: And I was like damn it. So flew to Miami
- 27:24Speaker 3: and lived there for one year, did one hundred episodes
- 27:27Speaker 3: on a Spanish sofa I was called in Nolmo Dada
- 27:30Speaker 3: and it was it was great and it was a hit.
- 27:32Speaker 3: And then I got a call from ICM here and
- 27:35Speaker 3: that's how I moved to LA.
- 27:36Speaker 1: That's how you moved to Las. Okay, So how old
- 27:40Speaker 1: are you when you moved to La.
- 27:41Speaker 3: Twenty seven, twenty eight twenty.
- 27:45Speaker 4: La?
- 27:45Speaker 1: Like for you?
- 27:46Speaker 3: I thought it was awful. I got here. I'm a
- 27:48Speaker 3: total New Yorker born and raised. We walk fast, we
- 27:52Speaker 3: talked fast, zero bullshit, and I just I don't like
- 27:56Speaker 3: the fake. I don't like the maybe we'll see what's
- 27:59Speaker 3: going on. I'll meet you at S and then people
- 28:01Speaker 3: canceling or you call be like, I hate wishy washy.
- 28:04Speaker 3: That is not my thing. Be straight up, you can
- 28:07Speaker 3: cancel anytime, just let me know. So I found that
- 28:09Speaker 3: really hard to kind of integrate yourself. I think it
- 28:12Speaker 3: took me a full year here to really make some
- 28:14Speaker 3: friends to really feel comfortable. That's where I met No,
- 28:17Speaker 3: it dis me, that's where I met, like my whole
- 28:19Speaker 3: crew of friends was at that time. And so once
- 28:22Speaker 3: I got into that little group, I started to feel
- 28:25Speaker 3: my groove. I started to like LA. I got my
- 28:27Speaker 3: own apartment, I started auditioning, I started working, I had
- 28:29Speaker 3: my agents, and I started to feel independent.
- 28:32Speaker 1: And I love how you talk about your now husband
- 28:36Speaker 1: John the best. So he is a twin brother.
- 28:39Speaker 3: Yep, I'm done.
- 28:40Speaker 1: I need to show you this on my card because
- 28:43Speaker 1: I think it's so funny. Okay, So our producer, Gina, Gina,
- 28:49Speaker 1: what did you do? She writes, So this is this
- 28:52Speaker 1: is the question, right, this is your now husband John.
- 28:54Speaker 1: Let me set the scene. John was there with his
- 28:56Speaker 1: brother Jim, identical twin. And then she writes a note, Oh,
- 28:58Speaker 1: my god, Danielle's smoke picture of them here Tom, I
- 29:04Speaker 1: don't know.
- 29:04Speaker 3: My god, Jim and John is Jim and John? Wait
- 29:08Speaker 3: it is? That is the exact story.
- 29:11Speaker 1: It's so good, It's so good.
- 29:12Speaker 3: And I think this is the best advice I'm going
- 29:14Speaker 3: to give woman. Okay, I'm going to give you the
- 29:16Speaker 3: best advice. This is what I did, and this is
- 29:18Speaker 3: how I met John. Okay, brutal truth, I tell them.
- 29:21Speaker 1: Okay, but I have to set the scene.
- 29:22Speaker 3: Okay, go ahead.
- 29:23Speaker 1: So Jim has a girlfriend at the time.
- 29:25Speaker 4: Yep.
- 29:26Speaker 1: Does John have a girlfriend?
- 29:28Speaker 3: He was meeting somebody he was dating there, And are
- 29:31Speaker 3: you with anybody? I'm with the guy I'm dating and
- 29:33Speaker 3: you don't care? Could care less? I literally remember, the
- 29:37Speaker 3: first thought in my head was how am I with
- 29:39Speaker 3: this idiot when he's here? Like I literally in my
- 29:42Speaker 3: head was like, that is my exact type. And I
- 29:44Speaker 3: was going to write it on a piece of paper,
- 29:46Speaker 3: like the looks that I like. For whatever reason, I
- 29:48Speaker 3: was like, that is exactly what I would pick as
- 29:51Speaker 3: like my type. And I was like, and I'm walking
- 29:53Speaker 3: with this idiot. That's what I was thinking.
- 29:55Speaker 1: Because the way you describe meeting him is like it
- 29:58Speaker 1: was love at first sight.
- 29:59Speaker 3: Love it first sight at least I think John would
- 30:02Speaker 3: say it too, like it was I think we saw
- 30:04Speaker 3: each other. It was like I don't know what happened,
- 30:07Speaker 3: you know. I was like, oh my god. I stopped.
- 30:08Speaker 3: It was just weird. It was like, oh my god.
- 30:11Speaker 3: And then we kept trying to talk the whole night.
- 30:12Speaker 3: And I talked to Jim and his girlfriend the whole
- 30:14Speaker 3: night because he was kind of meeting somebody, and obviously
- 30:16Speaker 3: I'm I'm with someone. So we're all doing shots, like
- 30:19Speaker 3: we're all drinking, we're having fun. And apparently in my
- 30:22Speaker 3: drunken stupor that night, you know, you know, we're having fun.
- 30:26Speaker 3: I said to my now sister in law. When the
- 30:28Speaker 3: girl came in that he was meeting and I'm with
- 30:30Speaker 3: my guy, I'm dating. I was like, oh yeah, we
- 30:33Speaker 3: got to get rid of her. So apparently I was
- 30:35Speaker 3: definitely interested. And I was like, I feel like this
- 30:39Speaker 3: might work out. There's something there.
- 30:41Speaker 1: Is that the advice you were going to give me? No, okay, advice, Okay.
- 30:45Speaker 3: The advice is when I met him, we all, you know,
- 30:47Speaker 3: we were in the dating scene. We've all been there.
- 30:49Speaker 3: You know, la, You're going out, everyone's setting you up
- 30:52Speaker 3: and all that stuff. And I kept talking about I've
- 30:54Speaker 3: always been somebody who did want to get married and
- 30:55Speaker 3: have kids. I definitely always wanted a family. I didn't
- 30:58Speaker 3: want the dynamics I had. I was excited to create
- 31:01Speaker 3: my own new dynamic because I knew it was possible.
- 31:03Speaker 3: I was like, you know whatever, but I wasn't going
- 31:05Speaker 3: to settle. So after two or three years of dating
- 31:08Speaker 3: and all this stuff, and I was like, you know,
- 31:09Speaker 3: thirty two at this point, or like thirty one, and
- 31:12Speaker 3: I was like, okay, you know your parents' console, what
- 31:14Speaker 3: are you doing? What's going on?
- 31:15Speaker 1: Yeah, and I'm thirty three.
- 31:16Speaker 3: I get the calls on you know, this is everybody
- 31:19Speaker 3: wants to know and so one day I was like,
- 31:21Speaker 3: you know what, if I really want to get married
- 31:23Speaker 3: and I really want to have kids, and I really
- 31:24Speaker 3: want this guy who's trustworthy, who's kind, who comes home whoever,
- 31:28Speaker 3: I was like, then I have to like change what
- 31:29Speaker 3: I'm doing. I was like, because I keep meeting the
- 31:32Speaker 3: same kind of guy. Do I want the agent and
- 31:33Speaker 3: the producer? No? Like I would be out to dinner
- 31:36Speaker 3: and you see the top guy, but he's calling four
- 31:38Speaker 3: other girls over here, and I was like, is this
- 31:40Speaker 3: what I really want? And I was like, no, if
- 31:42Speaker 3: I really want a nice guy, where do nice guys
- 31:45Speaker 3: hang out? I was like, literally, what do I need
- 31:46Speaker 3: to do? So I was like, you know what, I'm
- 31:48Speaker 3: going to train for a half marathon. Because I loved
- 31:50Speaker 3: being healthy. I always worked out, and I was like,
- 31:52Speaker 3: you know, I wanted to raise money for charity. And
- 31:54Speaker 3: I was like, you know what, I'm going to join
- 31:55Speaker 3: this group and I'm going to just train for this
- 31:57Speaker 3: half marathon. I'm going to raise money. I was like,
- 32:00Speaker 3: I bet you. I'm going to meet different people, and
- 32:02Speaker 3: I'm going to meet people who were like, maybe aren't
- 32:03Speaker 3: watching football on a Sunday because I don't watch football
- 32:05Speaker 3: on a Sunday. So I was like, I don't want
- 32:06Speaker 3: to be with a guy that's drinking beer and watching
- 32:08Speaker 3: football day because I don't want to do that. So
- 32:09Speaker 3: I was like, I'm going to go somewhere where it's
- 32:11Speaker 3: a Sunday morning. Who's going to run on a Sunday morning?
- 32:14Speaker 3: So I really was like. All my friends were like,
- 32:15Speaker 3: you're an idiot. What are you doing? They were going
- 32:17Speaker 3: to August Saturday night and I'd be like, I have
- 32:19Speaker 3: to go to bed, I'm going to run, and they're like,
- 32:20Speaker 3: you're crazy, and I was like, just let me try go.
- 32:23Speaker 3: The first day full anxiety, like the first day of school.
- 32:26Speaker 3: Get there, I'm like, oh my god, what am I doing?
- 32:28Speaker 3: I'm crazy? So I was like this is ridiculous. But
- 32:31Speaker 3: on that first run, I meet this girl Jody Okay,
- 32:34Speaker 3: she becomes my running partner. She was really sweets. She
- 32:36Speaker 3: went to UCLA Business school and she was working at
- 32:38Speaker 3: Fox or something like that, and we became friends. We
- 32:41Speaker 3: started training, had we did the marathon, raise the money.
- 32:44Speaker 3: It was amazing. Her birthday party is where I met On.
- 32:48Speaker 3: And if I wouldn't have run and I wouldn't have
- 32:50Speaker 3: met her, never would.
- 32:52Speaker 1: Have met On.
- 32:53Speaker 3: So changing what I did around the people making those
- 32:57Speaker 3: choices of knowing what you want, what kind of life
- 33:00Speaker 3: style do you want? And you need to meet somebody
- 33:01Speaker 3: who also has that kind of lifestyle and do we met.
- 33:05Speaker 3: It's like I met and I just changed the path
- 33:07Speaker 3: of my life completely.
- 33:09Speaker 1: Your whole trajectory switches completely. You guys get married.
- 33:13Speaker 3: We moved in after three months, oh my god, two
- 33:16Speaker 3: months later engaged. We've been married eighteen years together twenty
- 33:21Speaker 3: and we have two boys, twelve and fourteen.
- 33:23Speaker 1: And so this is kind of where your story catches
- 33:25Speaker 1: up from where we started. Because you told me you're
- 33:28Speaker 1: sitting on the couch and you're not feeling like yourself.
- 33:31Speaker 3: So I married John and he's the smartest, greatest, hardest
- 33:37Speaker 3: working person. I know. He just graduated business school so
- 33:41Speaker 3: doesn't have not making money yet, like not where my
- 33:43Speaker 3: parents were like, I mean, he's cute, he's great. Who's
- 33:45Speaker 3: taking care of you? And I was like I know,
- 33:48Speaker 3: but I was like, it's just there's something of like
- 33:50Speaker 3: I felt safe with him. I know he'll do whatever
- 33:52Speaker 3: it takes to make sure we're okay. Like at some
- 33:54Speaker 3: point I was like, you know, we were okay. I
- 33:56Speaker 3: had my own blades, like we're doing auditions, we're getting work,
- 33:58Speaker 3: and it was like fine, but then you get married.
- 34:02Speaker 3: And I would be lying to everyone if I didn't
- 34:05Speaker 3: say it wasn't hard. And your lifestyle, what you're used to,
- 34:10Speaker 3: the shopping, the cars, the how you know what I mean,
- 34:12Speaker 3: when that goes away and you have kids and there
- 34:15Speaker 3: is no nanny and there is no night nurse and
- 34:17Speaker 3: all of your friends have it all. I would be
- 34:19Speaker 3: lying if I said it wasn't hard, and having to
- 34:22Speaker 3: recheck yourself every day of why did you make this decision?
- 34:25Speaker 3: You are a team, You've got to make it work.
- 34:28Speaker 3: But there were a few years definitely that were hard.
- 34:30Speaker 3: That were definitely hard because he was traveling, trying to
- 34:33Speaker 3: live up to what I expected. He was working twenty
- 34:36Speaker 3: four to seven. He was literally traveling from Monday to Thursday,
- 34:39Speaker 3: Tuesday to Friday. I'd be alone with both kids, no nanny.
- 34:43Speaker 3: I mean, so stressful to the point where you just
- 34:48Speaker 3: let go of everything. And we just weren't happy, not happy,
- 34:52Speaker 3: not like happy, but not this happy, not what we
- 34:55Speaker 3: feel now. And there was something of we were both
- 34:58Speaker 3: just doing these roles that were I to do. I
- 35:01Speaker 3: had to be the stay at home mom at everything,
- 35:03Speaker 3: and he was working his ass off, never seeing the kids,
- 35:07Speaker 3: never seeing us, just to make money. And it did
- 35:11Speaker 3: not work for us. It just didn't work for us.
- 35:13Speaker 3: That's we weren't happy, Like we weren't playing the roles
- 35:16Speaker 3: we really were meant to play. We weren't spending the
- 35:18Speaker 3: time we were meant to spend. The kids were not
- 35:20Speaker 3: seeing this loving, happy relationship. It was mom stressed all
- 35:23Speaker 3: the time, exhausted all the time. I'm there, But am
- 35:27Speaker 3: I really happy being there? Am I really smiling all
- 35:30Speaker 3: the time? Do I look good when I'm there? I
- 35:32Speaker 3: don't know. Yeah, And there was, And to switch it
- 35:35Speaker 3: to now, just to make that comparison. We get to
- 35:38Speaker 3: spend so much time together. We're always with the boys.
- 35:40Speaker 3: We get to go to pickup, we get to get
- 35:42Speaker 3: all the events, we can travel with them. You know,
- 35:45Speaker 3: they see us laughing, they see us working together.
- 35:47Speaker 1: But it's all because you got dressed all.
- 35:49Speaker 3: The one action, just getting dressed every single day.
- 35:54Speaker 1: So you start making these videos in COVID, just get dressed.
- 35:57Speaker 3: So we started right right before COVID. I was like,
- 36:00Speaker 3: John kept encouraging me.
- 36:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 36:02Speaker 3: My best friend Aaron, who's an orthodontist, really smart, incredible.
- 36:05Speaker 3: Was the other person who would constantly be pushing me.
- 36:07Speaker 3: So another friend, really good friend, shows you, like what
- 36:10Speaker 3: are you doing. She'd be like, let's go what's your business?
- 36:12Speaker 3: What are you doing. I'd be like, stop stressing me out.
- 36:14Speaker 3: I'll figure it out when I That was was my answer.
- 36:17Speaker 3: When I'm ready, I'll figure it out, or when the
- 36:19Speaker 3: kids are a little bit older, like I'm just too tired.
- 36:21Speaker 3: Every excuse. And then I was like, you know what, Okay,
- 36:24Speaker 3: I'm just gonna try. People love the fashion. People always
- 36:26Speaker 3: ask me what I'm wearing, and I love shopping and that.
- 36:28Speaker 3: So I was like, you know, I'll take a photo.
- 36:29Speaker 3: Everybody was posting. It was like influencer kind of starting.
- 36:31Speaker 3: I was kind of like, I don't know what this is,
- 36:33Speaker 3: but okay, i'll try it. Okay my photo. That's how
- 36:36Speaker 3: it started, just one little photo in the mirror and
- 36:38Speaker 3: I was like, okay, we'll see what happens and I'll
- 36:40Speaker 3: just tag the brand. I just wanted some free clothes.
- 36:42Speaker 3: I was like, you know what, I'm just going to
- 36:44Speaker 3: tag and you know what, maybe somebody will gift you something.
- 36:46Speaker 3: It wasn't like I did not think of any of this,
- 36:48Speaker 3: because was not even a thought. It was how do
- 36:50Speaker 3: I make a little extra income that can shop and
- 36:53Speaker 3: do whatever I want? It's the truth. And so from
- 36:56Speaker 3: there COVID hits. And so when COVID hit, everything shuts down.
- 37:03Speaker 3: Everyone's freaking out. Everyone's like negative and scared, and everyone
- 37:08Speaker 3: apparently lets themselves go. Everybody's like, why are we getting dressed?
- 37:11Speaker 3: Who cares? And I was like, why are you dying?
- 37:13Speaker 3: What are you talking about? And so those mornings when
- 37:16Speaker 3: we were in complete lockdown, I don't know what got
- 37:19Speaker 3: me to get on the phone and turn on the
- 37:21Speaker 3: camera and I just started talking like a personal journal.
- 37:24Speaker 3: It was like a video journal.
- 37:26Speaker 1: But I think that to understand like the braveness of
- 37:30Speaker 1: what you did, you have to explain, like where you live, no,
- 37:36Speaker 1: because I think that like the comments from some of
- 37:41Speaker 1: the other moms and women in your community are really
- 37:45Speaker 1: could be borderline devastating for people you did not care.
- 37:50Speaker 3: You have no idea. We had moms making fun like
- 37:54Speaker 3: at school, Like when I started, there was a group
- 37:56Speaker 3: of moms who like, you know, some of them like
- 37:57Speaker 3: you know, you know, celebrity thing people that you're like
- 38:01Speaker 3: really and so when I started it the snippets, the joking,
- 38:05Speaker 3: the making fun. The husbands would make fun in comments
- 38:08Speaker 3: and they'd be like, oh, what are you doing? You
- 38:09Speaker 3: know it's so stupid. I'd be like, well, I'm making money.
- 38:11Speaker 3: What's your wife doing? That was always my comment, really okay?
- 38:14Speaker 3: And it got to a point where I was like,
- 38:16Speaker 3: I hate bullying. Yeah, I am completely against it. I
- 38:20Speaker 3: am all for supporting women always, and the fact that
- 38:23Speaker 3: they weren't being supported were being me moms. I was like,
- 38:26Speaker 3: we're going to put an end to this because I
- 38:27Speaker 3: was like, I cannot stand it. That is one thing
- 38:31Speaker 3: I just don't accept. There's no need for it. So
- 38:34Speaker 3: I would purposefully. They would all be in a group.
- 38:36Speaker 3: I'd pick up You'll love this pick up group, you
- 38:38Speaker 3: know the mom so you can imagine whispering don something.
- 38:41Speaker 3: I'd walk right past them. Wasn't highd in the back.
- 38:44Speaker 3: I'd walk right past them, and I would stand in
- 38:46Speaker 3: the front of the school where no one's supposed to
- 38:49Speaker 3: stand because you're supposed to be that close to the gate.
- 38:51Speaker 3: Stand in front of the school. They were all be
- 38:52Speaker 3: just staring at me because no one else is standing there. Yeah,
- 38:55Speaker 3: and I would get my phone, and I'd be like,
- 38:58Speaker 3: just to piss them off when you start creating coh.
- 39:01Speaker 1: Yeah. I was like, my goodness.
- 39:02Speaker 3: I was like, you guys want to watch you want
- 39:03Speaker 3: something to talk about, I'm gonna give you something to.
- 39:04Speaker 1: Talk about that as bold.
- 39:05Speaker 3: And when I realized none of them affected me, none
- 39:08Speaker 3: of them cared about me, none of them, I'm like,
- 39:11Speaker 3: why would I care about the opinion of people that
- 39:14Speaker 3: I don't really know, that don't benefit my life in
- 39:16Speaker 3: any way, who don't help me in any way. And
- 39:19Speaker 3: I'm like, what are you doing? I'm not impressed by
- 39:22Speaker 3: what you're doing? So like, why do I care what
- 39:24Speaker 3: your opinion is? Like You're not in my home, you're
- 39:26Speaker 3: not paying my bills, you're not with my husband, like
- 39:28Speaker 3: you're not. So I realized I was like, I have
- 39:31Speaker 3: more power. I have power, and I get to choose happy.
- 39:34Speaker 1: That takes so much gumption, you know what.
- 39:37Speaker 3: And there's something about being fifty. There's something about this
- 39:40Speaker 3: age that women fear and I think it's this is
- 39:43Speaker 3: the greatest I used to think fifty was the Golden Girls.
- 39:47Speaker 3: It is starting life over with experience, and it is
- 39:51Speaker 3: the greatest gift you will ever have.
- 39:53Speaker 1: Is that why you don't take advice from people that
- 39:55Speaker 1: are under fifty.
- 39:56Speaker 3: No, I really don't. I'm like, what do you know?
- 39:59Speaker 3: I've seen forces deaths, you know, alcoholism, my friend's child
- 40:04Speaker 3: just passed away, my other friend child has cancer. We've
- 40:06Speaker 3: seen it all. We've seen the cheating, We've seen this,
- 40:09Speaker 3: we've seen kids. I feel like I've seen it all.
- 40:12Speaker 3: Nothing shocks me anymore. I've experienced it all with every
- 40:14Speaker 3: single friend, with my own family. Until you're in your
- 40:18Speaker 3: fifties and you kind of really, I think fifty you
- 40:21Speaker 3: realize it's this switch in your brain, yeah, that you
- 40:25Speaker 3: only have fifty years left, and what are you going
- 40:28Speaker 3: to do with them?
- 40:29Speaker 1: If you're lucky?
- 40:30Speaker 3: And I saw my mom falling apart, I saw my
- 40:32Speaker 3: dad get sick, and I thought, I can only have
- 40:35Speaker 3: twenty or thirty years left. What am I going to
- 40:37Speaker 3: do with them? Am I really just going to sit
- 40:38Speaker 3: here and let some moms bully me and like me
- 40:40Speaker 3: sit home and not do anything and just be bored
- 40:42Speaker 3: and watch TV shows and just wait for pick up
- 40:45Speaker 3: and drop off. There's got to be more to life
- 40:47Speaker 3: than this. Yeah, And I remember being like, you are smart,
- 40:49Speaker 3: you are capable. What are you doing do something, and
- 40:53Speaker 3: I was like, I just don't want to end up
- 40:54Speaker 3: like them. I don't want to end up like that.
- 40:55Speaker 3: I was like, I'll do whatever it takes. And that
- 40:57Speaker 3: is literally that mindset of I don't want to end
- 41:00Speaker 3: up like that.
- 41:02Speaker 1: So if you google Caroline Buddino, here's what comes up.
- 41:06Speaker 1: Oh Lord, shop with Caroline. How this fifty two year
- 41:10Speaker 1: old influencer became a multi channel success. How she's redefining
- 41:14Speaker 1: success at any age. How Caroline Buddino became a lifestyle
- 41:17Speaker 1: influencer in her fifties. Here's how Caroline Budino found purpose
- 41:21Speaker 1: and a career in positive aging. I'm so curious if
- 41:27Speaker 1: aging was always a focal point for you.
- 41:30Speaker 3: You know, I think it was about taking away what
- 41:36Speaker 3: people think about aging. I think for me, it is
- 41:38Speaker 3: about aging in a sense where now I feel like
- 41:41Speaker 3: we talked to every age and that's what's amazing. I've
- 41:43Speaker 3: so many moms. I've met women's twelve year old daughters
- 41:47Speaker 3: that cried when they met you, and they're like, I
- 41:49Speaker 3: watch every day, said you realize even a twelve year
- 41:51Speaker 3: old has a hard time looking in the mirror and
- 41:52Speaker 3: liking what they see. And how do you provide those
- 41:55Speaker 3: happy tools for them to feel that confidence every day
- 41:57Speaker 3: so that they can face school, they can face the bullies.
- 42:00Speaker 3: You know what I mean is I realized it's every age,
- 42:02Speaker 3: you know what I mean? And that's what was So
- 42:04Speaker 3: that's what's so interesting now. But at the time, I
- 42:07Speaker 3: was fifty and to have a fifty year old trying
- 42:10Speaker 3: to be an influencer was kind of crazy at the time,
- 42:13Speaker 3: and getting out there and trying to put outfits together
- 42:15Speaker 3: and trying to show women that you're not dead, like
- 42:18Speaker 3: I just remember. And so I think at that point
- 42:20Speaker 3: it was a little bit about aging because I wanted
- 42:22Speaker 3: to remind women you're just getting started. Your age does
- 42:24Speaker 3: not matter. There is no time limit to finding your happy.
- 42:28Speaker 3: There's no age limit to finding your happy. And were
- 42:30Speaker 3: you really reminding yourself? Yes, I mean it started as
- 42:33Speaker 3: I think, it really was my personal video journal, and
- 42:36Speaker 3: you forget that there's so many people watching and you
- 42:40Speaker 3: just don't think about it.
- 42:41Speaker 1: You're really holding that mirror up.
- 42:44Speaker 3: Every single and what I realized the reason I get
- 42:46Speaker 3: on every day and I'm so committed to it, that's
- 42:49Speaker 3: my mirror every day. Like I tell you to look
- 42:51Speaker 3: in the mirror every day and just remind yourself that
- 42:54Speaker 3: phone is my mirror every single day that I have
- 42:56Speaker 3: to answer.
- 42:57Speaker 1: To my like the one piece of advice from my
- 43:00Speaker 1: mom that rings in my ears, Like since I was
- 43:03Speaker 1: a little girl, she would always say, like, whatever decisions
- 43:06Speaker 1: you make, you're the one that has to look in
- 43:08Speaker 1: the mirror in the morning and be proud of the
- 43:09Speaker 1: person staring back. So with bullying, with whatever it was,
- 43:12Speaker 1: and that has carried me through my whole life. Me too,
- 43:16Speaker 1: And I never really thought about it until I started
- 43:18Speaker 1: researching for this interview, because when you talk about the
- 43:21Speaker 1: mirror so much, it's deeper than just.
- 43:24Speaker 3: Ookay, it's not about you looking pretty. And again that's
- 43:26Speaker 3: why the clothes, it's never about the designer. Why love
- 43:28Speaker 3: Amazon Affordable all that, because it's not about the label.
- 43:31Speaker 3: It's not how much it costs. It's about the effort
- 43:34Speaker 3: that you were willing to make every day to remind
- 43:37Speaker 3: yourself that you're important too, and that you're the special occasion. Okay,
- 43:41Speaker 3: I think women forget we get all dressed up. You
- 43:44Speaker 3: will go get a spray tan. I'll get my eyebrows done,
- 43:47Speaker 3: I get makeup done. You mean you get a new outfit,
- 43:49Speaker 3: you will work out, You will do all of those
- 43:51Speaker 3: things for a date to meet a complete stranger who
- 43:54Speaker 3: may not even be nice to you, who you don't
- 43:56Speaker 3: even like, For a job interview that you know you
- 43:58Speaker 3: don't even know if you're going to get, but you're
- 44:00Speaker 3: not willing that. You're not willing to do that for you,
- 44:03Speaker 3: for your incredible life that you are living, the privilege
- 44:05Speaker 3: that you get to get up every single day. You're
- 44:07Speaker 3: the special occasion your life is, so get up and
- 44:10Speaker 3: get dressed for it.
- 44:11Speaker 1: I need your advice.
- 44:12Speaker 3: Tell me.
- 44:14Speaker 1: I feel like like Goblin mode or Hollywood mode. I
- 44:17Speaker 1: have no in between, okay, because I feel like for
- 44:20Speaker 1: my job, I get dressed and I'm actually like a very.
- 44:22Speaker 3: Low key girl.
- 44:24Speaker 1: So you're so beautiful, No, I have a lot of
- 44:27Speaker 1: hair and makeup. When I walk out of my house
- 44:29Speaker 1: in the morning, I sometimes like I'd be embarrassed to
- 44:32Speaker 1: see somebody. And I've heard the talk about that.
- 44:35Speaker 3: When I tell you, you know, I got a damn
- 44:37Speaker 3: recently and I've never laughed for her. She was like,
- 44:39Speaker 3: I went to the supermarkets, I was being lazy, I
- 44:42Speaker 3: didn't get dressed. She's like bumped into my ex boyfriend
- 44:45Speaker 3: and she goes. All I could hear in my ear
- 44:47Speaker 3: was Caroline screaming like why did you get dressed? And
- 44:50Speaker 3: I was like, if you were hiding in any way, yeah,
- 44:53Speaker 3: you don't feel good in your skin. Because if you're
- 44:55Speaker 3: hiding from a stre if you're hiding from seeing somebody,
- 44:57Speaker 3: if you think you look so good and you're so confident,
- 45:00Speaker 3: and you're like, you're so like not insecure, so then
- 45:03Speaker 3: why an't you walking right up to them and be like, hey,
- 45:05Speaker 3: how's it gone? What's going on? Yeah, if you're hiding,
- 45:08Speaker 3: there's an insecurity there, and insecurity doesn't make you feel
- 45:11Speaker 3: strong and confident. No, so what do you walk?
- 45:13Speaker 1: Get in the head dress?
- 45:14Speaker 3: You've got to get up and get dressed. And I'm
- 45:15Speaker 3: not saying like T shirt, jeans and a pair of hoops.
- 45:18Speaker 1: So you just from it's like that action. Yeah, you're
- 45:21Speaker 1: just making yourself a priority.
- 45:22Speaker 3: It triggers your brain. It just does. When you're like
- 45:25Speaker 3: up and dressed and moving, you're kind of like, okay,
- 45:27Speaker 3: I got this, all right, let's tell But if you're
- 45:29Speaker 3: in your pajamas or if you're just like not looking
- 45:31Speaker 3: at and you throw it together, you're frazzled, you're running around,
- 45:34Speaker 3: you're late. You walk past the mirror, you're gonna be
- 45:36Speaker 3: oh my god, I look like shit. Fuck Okay, oh god,
- 45:37Speaker 3: I hope I don't see anybody. Oh I need to
- 45:39Speaker 3: those ten pounds. Why did I work out? And then
- 45:40Speaker 3: you walk out the door feeling like that, if you
- 45:43Speaker 3: look good, you just put yourself a little bit, you
- 45:44Speaker 3: might walk past the mirror and be like, oh, you're cute. Okay, yeah,
- 45:47Speaker 3: all right, let's get it. Let's go. Got this very
- 45:50Speaker 3: different mindset walking out of your door, whether it's your
- 45:52Speaker 3: bedroom door to deal with your kids, yeah, and your family,
- 45:56Speaker 3: or walking out to go to work, or walking out
- 45:57Speaker 3: to the world. What attitude or perspective do you want?
- 46:00Speaker 1: I really do show up differently when I'm dressed. I
- 46:03Speaker 1: do too, So your life has completely shifted. I feel
- 46:08Speaker 1: like at fifty two, you are like the vision board
- 46:12Speaker 1: version of Caroline that you dreamed about when you were
- 46:14Speaker 1: a little girl.
- 46:15Speaker 3: I really am like, I feel like I'm proud. I
- 46:18Speaker 3: feel like my younger self would be really proud of
- 46:20Speaker 3: me right now.
- 46:21Speaker 1: I can't believe it happened at fifty two or fifty
- 46:23Speaker 1: that's amazing.
- 46:24Speaker 3: You know, it's funny again. I'm tearing up because I
- 46:27Speaker 3: really feel like I'm ready now. I don't know if
- 46:29Speaker 3: I was ready back then. I don't know if I
- 46:31Speaker 3: realized the other day I said, and I really thought
- 46:33Speaker 3: it was something. I actually took a second and I
- 46:35Speaker 3: was like, I always thought the waiting meant it wasn't
- 46:38Speaker 3: meant to be. I alway thought the waiting meant it
- 46:40Speaker 3: wouldn't work out for me, or it was like you're
- 46:42Speaker 3: never going to get it. And I realized the waiting
- 46:44Speaker 3: was preparing me to to be able to handle all
- 46:47Speaker 3: the challenges that come with it and to be able
- 46:49Speaker 3: to enjoy it and appreciate it. So I think the
- 46:52Speaker 3: waiting was the greatest gift because I actually know who
- 46:55Speaker 3: I am, I know what I like, I know my boundaries.
- 46:58Speaker 3: I don't take anything less. I just I feel so confident.
- 47:01Speaker 3: I feel good and if things don't work out, I'm
- 47:03Speaker 3: perfectly fine. I'm happy it all in like I'm happy.
- 47:07Speaker 3: I'm good.
- 47:08Speaker 1: Gloria Steinem in one of her books, talks about like
- 47:11Speaker 1: the beginning. Her book talks about how her mother wanted
- 47:15Speaker 1: to be a journalist and there's this guilt that she
- 47:18Speaker 1: always felt sort of living out her mother's dream. And
- 47:22Speaker 1: when you were telling me about your mom, that's the
- 47:23Speaker 1: first thing I thought of.
- 47:27Speaker 3: She's always wanted to have a store. She's always wanted
- 47:29Speaker 3: to be in fashion. It's like her grace. She loves
- 47:32Speaker 3: getting dressed, loves the jewelry. I got it from her.
- 47:34Speaker 3: There's no doubt she wears her makeup every single day.
- 47:37Speaker 3: If she does not have her red lipstick on, something's wrong.
- 47:40Speaker 3: And that is the truth. Like her red lipstick, if
- 47:42Speaker 3: you ask her, she's a I'm not dead. And so
- 47:44Speaker 3: it's the funny was saying. But when she doesn't happen on,
- 47:46Speaker 3: you know she's in a bad mood. You know something happened.
- 47:49Speaker 3: Even as a child, if that lipstick wasn't on, you
- 47:52Speaker 3: were like, oh shit, like what happened. So there is
- 47:55Speaker 3: something there and she's always loved it. And she was
- 47:58Speaker 3: never able to have her own store, to make her
- 48:00Speaker 3: own money, to have her own power in her own home.
- 48:04Speaker 3: And I think she watches me now and I think
- 48:07Speaker 3: she's really proud for the first time that I really
- 48:12Speaker 3: can take care of. Like I think she's proud of
- 48:14Speaker 3: the woman I am and what I've been able to accomplish.
- 48:16Speaker 3: On my own without a man. I mean I do
- 48:18Speaker 3: because I can't do it without John, that is the truth.
- 48:21Speaker 3: But I really started on my own, and I pushed
- 48:23Speaker 3: and I work hard every single day, like no days off.
- 48:27Speaker 3: I love it. I'm passionate about it. I don't dread it.
- 48:30Speaker 3: I'm excited every single morning to get out of bed.
- 48:33Speaker 1: I think you have to share how many videos you
- 48:34Speaker 1: make to really explain to people how hard you're working.
- 48:37Speaker 3: So we post. So anyone who understands social media, we post,
- 48:41Speaker 3: so we do. We go across all platforms so people understand.
- 48:44Speaker 3: It's like TikTok, Facebook, you know, YouTube, Instagram. We post
- 48:48Speaker 3: four to five videos a day, seven days a week,
- 48:51Speaker 3: so that much content has to be filmed. Like today,
- 48:54Speaker 3: we shot ten videos this morning just for the weekend.
- 48:58Speaker 3: So we are filming.
- 49:00Speaker 1: And you've been doing this for eight years.
- 49:01Speaker 3: Eight years straight, no days off, and I will sit
- 49:04Speaker 3: up till three in the morning. I will respond to
- 49:06Speaker 3: all the dams. I will respond to every comment, because
- 49:09Speaker 3: if you are willing to support me, if you are
- 49:11Speaker 3: willing to take the time out of your life to
- 49:13Speaker 3: write to me, I am so grateful to be fifty
- 49:16Speaker 3: two years old and having this kind of support and love,
- 49:18Speaker 3: like you're supporting my family, You're giving me like a
- 49:21Speaker 3: life that I never thought possible. And I can't take
- 49:24Speaker 3: two minutes to write you back now, like I will
- 49:27Speaker 3: be up till four in the morning writing everyone back,
- 49:29Speaker 3: even boys messages like videos like we're up and I
- 49:33Speaker 3: think we've That's why we have built an incredible community
- 49:36Speaker 3: of women, like from eighty ninety to twelve six year
- 49:40Speaker 3: olds that I get videos from.
- 49:42Speaker 1: Never seen anything like it, and those intergenerational relationships are
- 49:47Speaker 1: so special.
- 49:48Speaker 3: The best you learn the most. I have friends who
- 49:50Speaker 3: are in their twenties, thirties, forties, fifties. I have seventy
- 49:54Speaker 3: year old friend, Like it is the greatest gift you
- 49:56Speaker 3: can give yourself. Yeah, that's the advice you want surround
- 49:59Speaker 3: yourself with. Women have experience, have some knowledge, have been
- 50:02Speaker 3: through stuff, and then for me, I get to relive stuff.
- 50:06Speaker 3: Like my assistant I adore. She's one of my best friends,
- 50:08Speaker 3: Like I love her and it's like the twenty eight
- 50:10Speaker 3: year olds. You know how fun it is to be
- 50:11Speaker 3: able to give advice, to be able to set her
- 50:14Speaker 3: up for life like we are, Like, you need to
- 50:16Speaker 3: invest in this, you need to do this. No one
- 50:18Speaker 3: did that for me. I was being told to get married.
- 50:20Speaker 3: What I would have done for someone to tell me,
- 50:22Speaker 3: put your money here, do this, and so we are
- 50:25Speaker 3: setting them up for success. Nothing makes me happier than
- 50:28Speaker 3: empowering women. Nothing.
- 50:30Speaker 1: Well, speaking of twenty and thirty year olds, you say
- 50:32Speaker 1: that we're rushing to the end. What does that mean?
- 50:36Speaker 3: Marriage is really hard? Okay, kids, but it really hard. Okay,
- 50:41Speaker 3: that's why the fifty two year old's going to tell you, Okay,
- 50:44Speaker 3: eighteen years of marriage a twelve or fourteen year old. Yeah,
- 50:49Speaker 3: life is really hard, and it gets even harder it does.
- 50:52Speaker 3: You know, less problems, but they're bigger.
- 50:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 50:55Speaker 3: You start dealing with divorces, you start dealing with your kids,
- 50:57Speaker 3: health issues, you know, like financial You're so responsible for
- 51:02Speaker 3: so much. Nobody warns you. Nobody tells you the truth.
- 51:06Speaker 3: Maintaining a marriage is so much work. It is so
- 51:08Speaker 3: much work. Add children to it, add your elderly parents
- 51:12Speaker 3: to it. That's called the sandwich. Hears, Well, you're a
- 51:14Speaker 3: sandwich between everyone and women. Why do you think there's
- 51:17Speaker 3: so much depression? Why do you think there's the highest
- 51:20Speaker 3: suicide rate in women is in the forties and fifties. Now,
- 51:22Speaker 3: Surgeon General said that loneliness is now considered the same
- 51:26Speaker 3: effect on you as smoking two packs of cigarettes a day.
- 51:29Speaker 3: That's how unhealthy it is. So we have an issue here, right,
- 51:34Speaker 3: and so we have to start empowering women, lifting them up,
- 51:37Speaker 3: showing them that any age, any time, it's not starting over,
- 51:42Speaker 3: it's starting from experience. I tell like my young girls, right,
- 51:47Speaker 3: stop rushing to the end. Be an interesting person. Travel.
- 51:51Speaker 3: It is the greatest money you will ever spend. Understand
- 51:53Speaker 3: what other cultures are like, what other people are like.
- 51:56Speaker 3: Experience life, Understand who you are, Get to know yourself.
- 52:00Speaker 3: Please save money, Please learn how to make money and work.
- 52:03Speaker 3: Have your own bank account, have your own money when
- 52:05Speaker 3: you're getting married, so you don't start with that dynamic
- 52:08Speaker 3: of power. Money controls you every single person. I don't
- 52:12Speaker 3: care who you are. It controls you. When I was
- 52:14Speaker 3: with the guy and I thought I was so independent,
- 52:16Speaker 3: trust me. And it controls you. When you can't buy
- 52:18Speaker 3: the bag, or you can't buy the thing you wanted,
- 52:19Speaker 3: you're like, okay, fine, I'm not mad. That's not who
- 52:22Speaker 3: you really are. That's not authentic, and that eats away
- 52:24Speaker 3: at you. So I'm always telling them like, why are
- 52:26Speaker 3: you rushing to the end. It's hard to be married,
- 52:28Speaker 3: it is hard to have kids, It's huge problems, huge responsibility.
- 52:32Speaker 3: Enjoy your life, be fun, go with your girlfriends, date,
- 52:36Speaker 3: figure out who you are and what really makes you happy.
- 52:39Speaker 3: Then you get married and have kids. Stop rushing to
- 52:41Speaker 3: the end.
- 52:42Speaker 1: I think it's interesting that you didn't dream of like
- 52:44Speaker 1: settling down and having kids. It just kind of happened
- 52:47Speaker 1: to you.
- 52:47Speaker 3: It was like, I want to be independent, and I
- 52:49Speaker 3: really think that sometimes. And now I get it all
- 52:52Speaker 3: because now I get to be independent, and I get
- 52:54Speaker 3: to travel and I can do all that, and I
- 52:55Speaker 3: get the happy ending.
- 52:57Speaker 1: I love that you describe your marriage as happy, in
- 53:01Speaker 1: your partnership as strong. I'm gonna bore you for a second,
- 53:04Speaker 1: but I think this research is a little bit interesting.
- 53:07Speaker 1: So research shows that healthy support from partners is key
- 53:10Speaker 1: for successful workers, especially women. Multiple studies I've read show
- 53:15Speaker 1: that high achieving women in the workforce cites supportive husbands
- 53:18Speaker 1: and partners in sustaining long term success in their career.
- 53:22Speaker 1: I don't know if men have that same No, how
- 53:26Speaker 1: can you identify that trait in a man early on
- 53:29Speaker 1: in your life?
- 53:31Speaker 3: For me, John was never all about him. I felt
- 53:36Speaker 3: like we were a partnership from the beginning. I always
- 53:39Speaker 3: felt respected. I always felt like he thought I was
- 53:42Speaker 3: smart and capable. I have dated men who thought they
- 53:45Speaker 3: were the power, that I was lucky to be with them,
- 53:47Speaker 3: you know what I mean. I'm always like they should
- 53:49Speaker 3: be lucky to be with you, and I would say
- 53:51Speaker 3: they should fit into your like they're being interviewed by you.
- 53:54Speaker 3: They're not interviewing you. You're interviewing them. Are they good
- 53:57Speaker 3: for you? Are they kind to you? Are they respectful?
- 54:00Speaker 3: The way they treat their mother and the way they
- 54:02Speaker 3: treat their friends says everything. John was the most I've
- 54:05Speaker 3: never seen a man be that respectful.
- 54:07Speaker 1: To his parents.
- 54:08Speaker 3: I'm not joking, like I even scream up my mom.
- 54:10Speaker 3: I've never seen his raise his voice at his parents
- 54:12Speaker 3: in eighteen years, I've never seen it. Never seen him
- 54:15Speaker 3: curse anything at his parents like a gentleman. My friends
- 54:19Speaker 3: the night, all of my friends call John John dot com.
- 54:21Speaker 3: John helped me. He was always this just very respectful kind.
- 54:27Speaker 3: I always felt respected and I knew that he wanted
- 54:30Speaker 3: what was best for me. Other relationships, you're catering to
- 54:34Speaker 3: them you're trying to make sure you fit. You're scared
- 54:36Speaker 3: that they might drop you or leave you to be
- 54:39Speaker 3: I have never felt that insecurity with John. Ever, I
- 54:42Speaker 3: don't see him looking around. He calls when he says
- 54:45Speaker 3: he's gonna call. Even at the beginning, we met that night,
- 54:47Speaker 3: next morning, had a phone call, and we met that
- 54:49Speaker 3: next night.
- 54:51Speaker 1: We were together ever since. We did not spend one
- 54:53Speaker 1: single day apart this whole interview. I'm dying to have
- 54:56Speaker 1: John come in like the other side of this, that's
- 55:02Speaker 1: that so and he's telling you because it's it's just
- 55:04Speaker 1: so interesting how we put and he had never been.
- 55:06Speaker 3: In a long relationship, and he was like the most
- 55:08Speaker 3: stand up guy I had. Opens the door for you,
- 55:11Speaker 3: calls when he says he's gonna call. Those things are important.
- 55:14Speaker 3: The way they treat you is important, and they usually
- 55:17Speaker 3: show it quite early, and women see the red flags
- 55:21Speaker 3: and they don't do anything like, oh, he must be busy.
- 55:23Speaker 3: That's why he didn't call. He didn't call because he
- 55:25Speaker 3: doesn't want to call you like I'm sorry, or like
- 55:27Speaker 3: he didn't you know what I mean, or he didn't
- 55:28Speaker 3: get me this. Yes, he didn't want to because trust me,
- 55:31Speaker 3: the guy that wants to it's gonna call, It's gonna call.
- 55:35Speaker 1: I like that, you call marriage a Ponzi scheme?
- 55:40Speaker 3: John's favorite story, because what are you doing? People?
- 55:43Speaker 1: What do you mean by that?
- 55:45Speaker 3: Okay, this is what I mean. I honestly, I know
- 55:47Speaker 3: it's so hot in here. I'm so now. I don't
- 55:49Speaker 3: care losing. No, I love it. I literally was laughing
- 55:53Speaker 3: because one day I don't know what I was doing,
- 55:55Speaker 3: and I think we're watching the Epstein Show, right, a
- 55:57Speaker 3: documentary and whatever, and I was like, wow, say think
- 56:00Speaker 3: marriage is a Ponzies game? And John's what And I
- 56:02Speaker 3: was like, think about it. These men come, they promise
- 56:05Speaker 3: you the world. They dangle the carrot. They're like, oh,
- 56:08Speaker 3: buy you this, I'll buy you that. Just give me kids,
- 56:10Speaker 3: You'll be calm, I'll take care of you. Everything is fine,
- 56:13Speaker 3: and you kind of fall for it. You start investing.
- 56:15Speaker 3: You're like, okay, maybe, so you invest with the first kid.
- 56:18Speaker 3: Then you make another investment with the second kid. All
- 56:20Speaker 3: of a sudden, you're like, wait, where's all the money,
- 56:22Speaker 3: Like where's all the gifts? And you're like wait, why
- 56:25Speaker 3: am I at home? Where's the nanny? And all of
- 56:26Speaker 3: a sudden You're like, wait, did I just get scammed?
- 56:28Speaker 3: Because I'm doing it all. I'm like cleaning, good gae,
- 56:31Speaker 3: taking care of the kids, supporting him, running around. I'm
- 56:35Speaker 3: actually not that happy. And I was like, what happened?
- 56:37Speaker 3: And I was like, I think we're all getting scammed?
- 56:39Speaker 3: Was like, because the truth is, no one can promise
- 56:42Speaker 3: you that right. Life takes huge turns. John was unfortunately
- 56:46Speaker 3: at a great tech company, great job, and there his
- 56:48Speaker 3: entire team was let go. So anything, even the richest
- 56:51Speaker 3: guy can lose it all. So what happens then? So
- 56:54Speaker 3: I'm kind of like, you still need to know what
- 56:56Speaker 3: your investments are, not in him, in yourself.
- 57:00Speaker 1: One of my girlfriends always would date men for money.
- 57:05Speaker 1: I have many of those, and well, and it's like
- 57:08Speaker 1: to each their own right that that's like.
- 57:11Speaker 3: If you can live with that, absolutely, if you're happy
- 57:13Speaker 3: and you're waking up happy with him, great, totally Yeah,
- 57:16Speaker 3: but she wasn't.
- 57:18Speaker 1: And one of our other girlfriends at breakfast, it was
- 57:20Speaker 1: like very sex in the city looked at her and said,
- 57:23Speaker 1: I just want you to know, if you marry for money,
- 57:25Speaker 1: you pay for it the rest of your life.
- 57:27Speaker 3: Good for her, good friend, good friend, good friend, because
- 57:30Speaker 3: when I was getting married, when I was gonna marry
- 57:31Speaker 3: the guy, Yeah, my best friend said to me, I
- 57:34Speaker 3: just want to be honest with you. And I was like,
- 57:36Speaker 3: oh god, what she's like the fire that burns inside
- 57:39Speaker 3: of you, that like makes what I love about you.
- 57:41Speaker 3: You're so fun and lively and h that's what I
- 57:43Speaker 3: love about you. She's like, I'm just letting you know
- 57:45Speaker 3: it's dead. And she's like, so if you marry him,
- 57:47Speaker 3: She's like, I just don't know if we're going to
- 57:49Speaker 3: be good friends. She was like, you were just not
- 57:50Speaker 3: the same person anymore. She's dead inside. I was like,
- 57:54Speaker 3: and I was, that's a really good. Only person that
- 57:56Speaker 3: told me, the one and only person that told me.
- 57:59Speaker 3: Everyone else was Yeah. Seeing her on Sunday for coffee,
- 58:02Speaker 3: that's so special. I mean, best friend since high school,
- 58:05Speaker 3: junior year in high school till this day. She sang
- 58:07Speaker 3: at my wedding with John.
- 58:08Speaker 1: I love friends who can do that. The truth tellers,
- 58:10Speaker 1: the truth tellers, and to bring it back to you,
- 58:13Speaker 1: you have to have women who are willing to tell
- 58:15Speaker 1: you the truth. So you say everybody needs to find
- 58:17Speaker 1: their happy tools. What are happy tools?
- 58:20Speaker 3: Okay? Where can I find them? Okay, we're getting your
- 58:23Speaker 3: happy tools. And how I started them was during COVID,
- 58:26Speaker 3: I was feeling a lot of anxiety. I think menopause
- 58:28Speaker 3: causes a lot of anxiety, to be honest with you.
- 58:30Speaker 3: And then obviously everything going on in the world was
- 58:32Speaker 3: like I just felt a lot of anxiety.
- 58:34Speaker 1: My mom talked about that, did she menopause and anxiety?
- 58:37Speaker 1: And I think she was never anxious until menopause.
- 58:39Speaker 3: When I've never been anxious etherough except for my parents,
- 58:43Speaker 3: Like where my parents would fight, I would be anxious.
- 58:45Speaker 3: But through the years with John, like I wasn't. And
- 58:47Speaker 3: then all of a sudden, it was like panic attacks.
- 58:49Speaker 3: Like I once said, two or three times I've said,
- 58:51Speaker 3: I think I need to go to the hospital.
- 58:53Speaker 1: That's scary.
- 58:54Speaker 3: The scariest thing, plus the horrible hop like you just
- 58:57Speaker 3: don't know what's happening to you. And you gained thirty
- 58:58Speaker 3: pounds thirty pounds in a year, oh my god, like stomach.
- 59:02Speaker 3: I mean, you just do not recognize yourself. Like you
- 59:05Speaker 3: wonder why women are so freaked out, why they're so depressed,
- 59:09Speaker 3: because first of all, menopause has never talked about. Yeah,
- 59:11Speaker 3: there's no real study and research on it. Women in
- 59:13Speaker 3: their fifties have been forgotten about and and god, now
- 59:17Speaker 3: we have a lot of people speaking about it. And
- 59:19Speaker 3: when I start talking about it. It was probably my
- 59:22Speaker 3: my highest reach in things was when I would talk
- 59:24Speaker 3: about menopause, like the most unsexy topic. Every single person
- 59:28Speaker 3: would be like, okay, no one talks about this, what
- 59:30Speaker 3: do you mean? And the anxiety is so real? And
- 59:33Speaker 3: then imagine that mixed in with your real life. Yeah right,
- 59:36Speaker 3: I mean it's just like COVID was happening. I was
- 59:38Speaker 3: feeling that I wasn't sleeping, horrible hot sweats, no doctor's open,
- 59:41Speaker 3: So I went through the worst of menopause, no doctors available,
- 59:44Speaker 3: so I just had to live through it. So I
- 59:46Speaker 3: was like, Okay, I need to figure this out. I
- 59:48Speaker 3: can't feel like this. Have two little kids, we're having homeschooling.
- 59:51Speaker 3: This is crazy.
- 59:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 59:52Speaker 3: So I started being like, Okay, what makes me feel good?
- 59:54Speaker 3: What are the things that like trigger that anxiety to
- 59:57Speaker 3: go away? What makes me kind of brings me back?
- 59:59Speaker 3: So I would go outside, you know, feet in the grass.
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: People say grounding, like it's so real, like when you
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: just kind of reset yourself. I would sit outside because COVID.
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: We'd be home, so I would sit on the sun
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: and I would just put my face in the sun
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: and I'd be like, Okay, that makes me feel better.
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: And I just remember being like this, and then I
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: remember being like, okay, some gratefulness. Okay, we're gonna be okay,
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: We're okay. Thank god, we have a home, we have
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: our foods. You know, this is like the lockdown. I
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: was like, we're good, We're good. And I just remember
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: that would just make me feel better. A little bit
- 1:00:24Speaker 3: of sunlight, little sun therapy, little gratitude. Yeah, that's a
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: happy tool for me. I go outside, what I'm not
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: feeling great, I will put my face in the sun.
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: I calm myself down, and I'm just like, you got this,
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: everything's fine, You're good. Like it's like a mini pep talk,
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: mini pep talk, mini like meditation, you know what I mean,
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: Like we're good. Stop it. So that to me is
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: a happy tool. That for me was a happy tool. Yeah. Me, movement,
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: I look like any kind of movement, working out, going
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: for walks, because again during COVID, we would go for walks.
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: We would have great conversations and I'd be like, oh
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: that i'd feel better. Yeah, so movement in any way, workouts,
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: you know, hike anything for me. Getting dressed that is
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: my greatest happy tool. It would be like as soon
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: as I would get dressed, it would change the way
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: I felt. So happy. Tools for me me positive self talk.
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: That's why I say, look in the mirror and remind
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: yourself every day you're strong, capable, smart, beautiful and you
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: can do hard things. I say it every single day
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: in the mirror. So that talk would also help. So
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: those are my five happy calls. People have all different things.
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: It's figuring out what really what does like what makes
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: you feel better when you're not feeling good? So it's like,
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: how do you find you're happy in the heart.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: Your presence on social media led to your podcast Coming
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: in Hot with Caroline.
- 1:01:32Speaker 3: You can talk, Yes I can. I'm sorry.
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: I'm so impressed because I can't do a solo episode.
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: Yes you can. You're amazing, Yes you can.
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: I get so nervous. I like to ask the questions
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: and have other people talk. But you can just go.
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: And you're such a great storyteller. Thank you. You're known
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: for being honest and authentic. Okay, but you're doing an
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: episode by yourself talking to an expert, or a Q
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: and A with your husband John in most of them.
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: What does being an influencer mean to you?
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: I do never look at it like I hate calling
- 1:02:04Speaker 3: people followers because I don't think anyone's following you. We're
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: all grown women, but you make a choice to be
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: part of some community. This is my community. I feel
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: like it's my crew of women that we all support
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: each other. I don't think anyone's following I'm not following people.
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: You know what I mean to me, it's like influence
- 1:02:17Speaker 3: to me is I don't use that word in my bid.
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: I really hate that word.
- 1:02:20Speaker 3: I hate it. I really don't think it's appropriate, to
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: be honest with you, it's just I think it just
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: it makes you think like you're so big and they're
- 1:02:26Speaker 3: you're my followers, we are equal. I'm like, if I can,
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: you can, and that to me is the greatest thing.
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: If I can do this, I'm fifty two at home
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: with one photo. Trust me, you can. I did not
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: know even how to open my computer. I didn't want
- 1:02:40Speaker 3: to do any social media time. I'd be like John,
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: I don't know how to do this. I didn't know
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: anything and I'm an expert. Now ask me. I'm an expert.
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: So for me, yeah, yes.
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: So's we can do those That ex boyfriend or fiance
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: recently called. And what did he say?
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: He actually said, you will laugh. He's you were always
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: really smart.
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: How did that feel?
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: I go, yeah, I know, and I just was like,
- 1:03:08Speaker 3: damn you And it was like it felt he literally called,
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: I am so impressed. He's like, I am so proud
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: of you. You're killing He saw the Forbes article. He
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: saw this. He was like, what I was supposed to
- 1:03:18Speaker 3: be his purse? Yeah, and I'm so not somebody's purse,
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: you know what I mean. I was like, oh, I'm
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: the back you know what I mean.
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: So I was like he was.
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: It was really nice for somebody who he actually is
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: very successful, very smart. He is a good you know,
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: no hard feelings, honestly, and it was nice to hear
- 1:03:36Speaker 3: from someone who I think, in my own way maybe
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: thought he didn't think I was or something, just because
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: you're put in this weird dynamic of power. Yeah, And
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: to just hear him be like you did it, and
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: I was like, yeah I did. It was like amazing
- 1:03:49Speaker 3: to like literally looking at him. He was on FaceTime,
- 1:03:52Speaker 3: and I was like, oh, yeah, you knew I was
- 1:03:54Speaker 3: going to do something like I wasn't just going to sit.
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: Around like you're telling me all these stories for the
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: last hours. So and your husband John is here in
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: the room, and I know your mom watches your videos too.
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: How do the people closest to in your life feel
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: about you being so honest because you really are, like
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: you're sharing and sometimes it's not your story.
- 1:04:15Speaker 3: We did not speak for three months at the beginning,
- 1:04:18Speaker 3: me and my mom, oh wow, and my aunt. Yeah,
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: there was a time I think when my dad was
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: sick and everybody was very stressed, obviously going through a lot,
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: and she they watched something that I we were home
- 1:04:30Speaker 3: for Thanksgiving. It was a complete chit show. It was
- 1:04:33Speaker 3: a really bad experience, to be honest with you. My
- 1:04:35Speaker 3: dad was not well, you know, they were fighting all
- 1:04:38Speaker 3: the time. It was really stressful, and I noticed that
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: the apartment wasn't being kept up, so I was getting
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: really worried about what's going on here and can they
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: take care of themselves? And I talked about it on
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: social media the next day the next morning of how
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: horrible Thanksgiving was because it was like this and mad
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: and my mom and I walked out of my bedrooms
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: in the morning and my aunt and my mom were
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: sitting there with the phone. They basically instill to me
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: to the core, like to the core and tell me
- 1:05:03Speaker 3: to pack up and leave. And my kids actually said
- 1:05:06Speaker 3: to me, Sawyer, my oldest goes mom, I'm so sorry
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: your mom doesn't love you because we were kicked out
- 1:05:13Speaker 3: of our own house.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: Whoa.
- 1:05:14Speaker 3: And I was like, it's okay. I'm like she loves me,
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: she doesn't know how to show it.
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: It's okay.
- 1:05:18Speaker 3: I was like, we're going to be fine. And it
- 1:05:20Speaker 3: was brutal, and I stood my ground because I literally said,
- 1:05:24Speaker 3: what are you so embarrassed about? And she's like, how dear,
- 1:05:27Speaker 3: And I was like, I'm not embarrassed about our life.
- 1:05:29Speaker 3: This is the truth. I haven't lied about anything. So
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: if you want to live a lie, that's your problem.
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: But I was like, I'm not going to live a lie.
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: I am going to tell it because you don't help
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: anybody by lying. The only way you help people is
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: by being honest and learn from it. So I was like,
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: I'm not going to stop. We didn't speak for three
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: months and then she gave in. Now doesn't care at all,
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: doesn't care at all. I love that and John, I think, wow,
- 1:05:52Speaker 3: he always allowed me to be open. It's funny. John
- 1:05:54Speaker 3: never cared. John was always like, do you if that's
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: what you want to tell, that's your story to tell.
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: That's a huge amount of support.
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: John has been the most the most supportive, honestly, like
- 1:06:04Speaker 3: he's like, I want to see you win. And when
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: he you know, his job was gone and he could
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: come over to me and help, he literally was like,
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: I want to help you win. And that's when things
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: took off. It was a year ago. One year ago,
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: I was thirty eight thousand. Now I'm here and I'm
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: on the Today Show in one year. I love that.
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: You said you were sitting in your pajamas feeling terrible
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: watching the Today Show, and then here you are on
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: the Today Show as a guest.
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: It was like the most pivotal astronht because I said,
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: it was surreal. I would sit, drop off, come home,
- 1:06:35Speaker 3: sit on the couch, you watch the Today Show. You're
- 1:06:37Speaker 3: kind of like, oh, that must be nice to get
- 1:06:38Speaker 3: dressed up and go to the set, you know. I
- 1:06:39Speaker 3: mean it was kind of like, yes, there's nothing left
- 1:06:41Speaker 3: that used to be my dream. So I used to
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: be in TV and you know, and that was kind
- 1:06:44Speaker 3: of like my time's over, Like my chance is over.
- 1:06:46Speaker 3: It's not happening too. Last week in New York City,
- 1:06:50Speaker 3: sitting on the couch with Hoda and Jenna, You're like,
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: anything is possible. If this isn't proof that you can
- 1:06:56Speaker 3: do anything at any time in your life, then sleeping
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: like wake up.
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: One of the things that I think is so inspirational
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: about your story, too, is that you talk about consistency
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: a lot. Yes, like there's no magic pills, there's no
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: doing this for seven years with how what would you
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: say the amount of success was with Like, I have.
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: To be honest, like I said, consistently When people ask
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: me what do you do? Everybody wants a secret, everybody
- 1:07:19Speaker 3: wants to know what you're doing. And I said, there's
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: absolutely no secret. It is hard work. It is consistency
- 1:07:25Speaker 3: and its persistence. That's it. I was like, we literally
- 1:07:28Speaker 3: post every single day the last eight years, NonStop, showing
- 1:07:33Speaker 3: up even when no one's watching, even like you have
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: to believe in your message, you have to have that
- 1:07:37Speaker 3: passion because yes, there are times that people weren't watching.
- 1:07:40Speaker 3: There were people there was no likes, there was no nothing,
- 1:07:41Speaker 3: and it's like I really believed in something. I was like,
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: I want to bring happy back. I was like, I
- 1:07:46Speaker 3: feel like we've normalized unhappiness. Yes, we have normalized women
- 1:07:50Speaker 3: being miserable and hating their husbands and hating their kids,
- 1:07:52Speaker 3: and everyone just drinking because we're miserable, like the housewives
- 1:07:54Speaker 3: and all that. It's all fun, but there is a
- 1:07:56Speaker 3: point where when do we start motivating women? When do
- 1:07:59Speaker 3: we start showing women that they can When do we
- 1:08:02Speaker 3: inspire women to get back up and get dressed and
- 1:08:04Speaker 3: look fabulous, feel fabulous? When did we stop doing that?
- 1:08:07Speaker 3: And I was like, I'm going to bring it back.
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: If it's the last thing I do, I'm going to
- 1:08:10Speaker 3: have every single woman up and dressed feeling fabulous. I
- 1:08:13Speaker 3: was like, that is my mission in life. Like I
- 1:08:15Speaker 3: love it.
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: I used to work at Entertainment Tonight Online you did,
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: and I would stay late and watch They had a
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: huge catalog of videos and just like of old interviews,
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: and I used to love Jennifer Lopez and I would
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: watch hours of her interviews. The thing that she always
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: said in these interviews was like the only difference between
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: me and somebody who didn't make it was I didn't
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: give up.
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: That's it. It's the word, it's it's the effort you're
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: willing to make. That's so that really is because you
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: look at me and I have friends we were all
- 1:08:47Speaker 3: started around the same time, and I had literally had
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: a friend that I surpassed who was, you know, the
- 1:08:51Speaker 3: big one, and an I surpassed her, and she literally
- 1:08:53Speaker 3: was like, nobody works like you. She goes, I can't.
- 1:08:56Speaker 3: I would not be able to do what you do.
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: She was like, you put.
- 1:08:58Speaker 3: In everything, was like, that is the only way you
- 1:09:02Speaker 3: can half asset and expect to be successful. No one's
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: coming to save you, no one's coming to help you.
- 1:09:07Speaker 3: No one's gonna knock on the door and hand you
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: your best life. You got to choose it. You gotta
- 1:09:11Speaker 3: want it, you gotta work for it. Hell hell yes,
- 1:09:15Speaker 3: and you can.
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: And you should have some rapid fire questions.
- 1:09:19Speaker 3: Okay, let's do it.
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: Okay, one thing that every woman should try once.
- 1:09:23Speaker 3: Skydiving. Really it was like life changing. I'm not joking.
- 1:09:27Speaker 3: It was like so freeing. It was like you.
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: Jumped what I thought you were going to say it.
- 1:09:32Speaker 3: That's the truth. That was one of those things. I'm
- 1:09:34Speaker 3: like an adventure seeker, so we love that stuff. And
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: to me, it's remind yourself that you're alive. Oh no,
- 1:09:40Speaker 3: I feel my heart beat pretty good here on the ground.
- 1:09:42Speaker 3: Or I would say, like to me, travel if you
- 1:09:44Speaker 3: have not been anywhere, go travel somewhere it is, or
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: travel alone. Find that independence. There is something so empowering
- 1:09:51Speaker 3: about it. What's one place you think everybody personally? Africa
- 1:09:55Speaker 3: was the greatest experience of all your lives. We did
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: all of Tanzania. It was our honeymo and we literally
- 1:10:01Speaker 3: went three weeks.
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: How cool?
- 1:10:03Speaker 3: Life changing when you see that, you will never complain against.
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: How often should we wash our jeans once a week?
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: What's an acceptable number of days between duplicating outfits?
- 1:10:15Speaker 3: Ooh, I'm actually okay with duplicating. I think it's kind
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: of cool now that everyone's showing how to use things
- 1:10:19Speaker 3: in your closet and not so much spend and waste.
- 1:10:22Speaker 3: So I kind of appreciate this new trend of people
- 1:10:25Speaker 3: shopping their closets. And I see I have friends who
- 1:10:27Speaker 3: will wear the same thing, like maybe two days in
- 1:10:29Speaker 3: a row. They actually wore the same dress, And I
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: was like, it's kind of ballsy and I like it. Yeah,
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: but I think, you know, I think within a week,
- 1:10:36Speaker 3: like one week and then the next week repeat it.
- 1:10:38Speaker 3: I would never even notice our hair.
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: You had Thanksgiving dinner with Michael Jackson.
