I've been practicing my gym phrases, but today I realized I don't know how to talk about lockers or changing rooms. Lucas: Perfect timing. That's exactly what we're covering today. So, first phrase: 'Wo ist die Umkleide?' That means 'Where is the changing room?' Luna: Wo ist die Umkleide? Umkleide... that's a long word. Lucas: It is. Umkleide. Let's break it: 'Um' and 'Kleide'. Just practice it a few times: Umkleide. Luna: Umkleide. Umkleide. Okay, I think I've got it. Wo ist die Umkleide? Lucas: Exactly. Now imagine you're at the gym and you see a sign. You can ask a staff member: 'Wo ist die Umkleide?' Luna: Got it. And after I find it, I'll need a locker. How do I say that? Lucas: Great question. 'Ich brauche ein Schließfach.' That means 'I need a locker.' Schließfach. Luna: Ich brauche ein Schließfach. Schließfach. That's a bit tricky. Schließ... fach. Lucas: You're doing well. Schließfach. Try it once more. Luna: Schließfach. Ich brauche ein Schließfach. Lucas: Perfect. Now, you'll also need to ask for a key. 'Wo bekomme ich einen Schlüssel?' – 'Where do I get a key?' Luna: Wo bekomme ich einen Schlüssel? Schlüssel... that's 'key', right? Lucas: Yes. Schlüssel. Masculine. Einen Schlüssel. Good memory from previous episodes. Luna: Okay, so I ask for the key. But what if I see a free locker? How do I say 'this locker is free'? Lucas: You would say 'Das Schließfach ist frei.' Frei means free or available. Luna: Das Schließfach ist frei. Simple enough. And if the staff gives me a key, they might say 'Hier ist der Schlüssel.' Lucas: Exactly. 'Hier ist der Schlüssel.' That's a very common phrase. Let's practice all five together. Luna: Okay. Wo ist die Umkleide? Ich brauche ein Schließfach. Wo bekomme ich einen Schlüssel? Das Schließfach ist frei. Hier ist der Schlüssel. Lucas: Fantastic! You've got them all. Let's do a quick scene. Imagine you walk into the gym. You see a staff member. What do you say first? Luna: Wo ist die Umkleide? Lucas: The staff points to the left. You find the changing room. Then you need a locker. What do you say? Luna: Ich brauche ein Schließfach. Lucas: They show you to a row of lockers. You see an open one. You say... Luna: Das Schließfach ist frei. Lucas: But you need a key. So you ask... Luna: Wo bekomme ich einen Schlüssel? Lucas: The staff member gives you a key and says 'Hier ist der Schlüssel.' And you're all set. Luna: That was a really smooth interaction.
