Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: About territory is back Mets manager at Carlost Mendoza joining
- 0:06Speaker 1: us right now, Mandy, we really appreciate the time. I
- 0:08Speaker 1: know it's a busy week, so let's get right into biz.
- 0:11Speaker 1: How are you feeling? First of all, are you excited? Nervous?
- 0:15Speaker 1: This is like the playoffs happening over the final six
- 0:18Speaker 1: games for your team.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Yeah, good to see you guys. Definitely, I'm excited. You know,
- 0:23Speaker 2: even though it's been it hasn't been pretty, you know,
- 0:27Speaker 2: I'm excited.
- 0:28Speaker 3: You know, we have a big week ahead of us
- 0:30Speaker 3: starting tonight, and here here we are and beautiful Chicago, getting.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Ready for a super important game today.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Like you said, every game feels like a playoff game,
- 0:38Speaker 3: and he's been like that for the past I don't
- 0:41Speaker 3: know how.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Many days, but you know, here we are and go
- 0:46Speaker 2: sentrim one day at a time.
- 0:48Speaker 4: There's a preparation any different for these games. Are you
- 0:50Speaker 4: sitting there in your meetings and going, Okay, this is
- 0:53Speaker 4: who's available, just like every other day, But then you're like,
- 0:56Speaker 4: you know what, I might go to this guy sooner
- 0:59Speaker 4: because we are, like you said, in a playoff type
- 1:02Speaker 4: of situation.
- 1:04Speaker 2: As far as the preparation, goes. It's pretty consistent.
- 1:08Speaker 3: I think it's just the way you manage games, you know,
- 1:10Speaker 3: and then and how much you use guys down the stretch,
- 1:14Speaker 3: you know. So I think that's the way we see
- 1:17Speaker 3: it is that's the only difference. You know, you're gonna
- 1:19Speaker 3: be aggressive when you're taking out your starters or relievers
- 1:24Speaker 3: or pinch hitting. It's like, you know, there's not tomorrow
- 1:27Speaker 3: for us. You know, it's do what we need to
- 1:29Speaker 3: do today to win the baseball game, and then we
- 1:31Speaker 3: go about tomorrow tomorrow. And the mentality has been like
- 1:33Speaker 3: that for I don't know more than a month. When
- 1:36Speaker 3: you're in the big leagues, you know you're trying to
- 1:39Speaker 3: win every night. But right now, I think it's just
- 1:44Speaker 3: how aggressive and the way you use all of you
- 1:46Speaker 3: guys that are available.
- 1:48Speaker 4: Do those guys know that to the bullpen guy? Because
- 1:50Speaker 4: I mean, you're you're talking about the bullpen. You're not
- 1:52Speaker 4: you're not making a wholesale platoon changes in the lineup
- 1:55Speaker 4: like some teams. You're talking about the bullpen. Do you
- 1:58Speaker 4: have that conversation today when they get there, you walk
- 2:02Speaker 4: around the outfield, what is what does that look like?
- 2:05Speaker 2: Yeah? Of course you got to let them know.
- 2:07Speaker 3: You got to give them a headsop, and you know,
- 2:08Speaker 3: because they got different routines, you know, and a guy
- 2:11Speaker 3: that is probably used to pitching the seventh or eighth,
- 2:14Speaker 3: hey man, you could be as early as the fourth inning,
- 2:16Speaker 3: so their routine's got to change a little bit. And uh,
- 2:19Speaker 3: you know, I'll try and do it myself, are pitching coaches,
- 2:23Speaker 3: but we make sure we give those guys ahead stop
- 2:26Speaker 3: what we're thinking going into a game, so that way
- 2:28Speaker 3: can they can prepare and be ready on time.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Mandy, you're playing the Cubs, this is a playoff team,
- 2:35Speaker 1: and I know you're mostly thinking, hey, we just got
- 2:38Speaker 1: to win the games were supposed to win, not only
- 2:39Speaker 1: this week, but you know even last week. It's not
- 2:41Speaker 1: an excuse, but just the natural human reaction over the
- 2:45Speaker 1: weekend from you. I know you were checking out the
- 2:47Speaker 1: score at least to see how Cubs Reds was going.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Were you surprised, like the Cubs got swept by the
- 2:52Speaker 1: Reds and now we're here.
- 2:54Speaker 3: No, I mean, anything can happen, man, anybody can beat
- 2:57Speaker 3: anybody at any particular day. I was just you know,
- 2:59Speaker 3: concenter at it on our games, and uh, we didn't
- 3:01Speaker 3: win a series It was tough. It was frustrating for us,
- 3:04Speaker 3: the fact that we couldn't win the series against the Nationals.
- 3:07Speaker 3: We were, you know, one swing away on Saturday, and
- 3:10Speaker 3: then on Sunday we didn't do much as a team,
- 3:14Speaker 3: and then here we are sitting in this position.
- 3:17Speaker 2: But again, the.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Past is in the past and all we could control
- 3:21Speaker 3: now is taking care of business today.
- 3:24Speaker 4: What is tougher playing a team that's already cleansed in
- 3:27Speaker 4: the playoffs, but it's a good team playing a team
- 3:29Speaker 4: that has nothing to lose because they're packing up at
- 3:32Speaker 4: the end of the series because you don't know what
- 3:35Speaker 4: you're getting. When you talk about preparation pregame for these teams,
- 3:41Speaker 4: they're both.
- 3:41Speaker 3: They're both tough, you know, and especially not only when
- 3:46Speaker 3: when you're playing teams are out of it, but you're
- 3:48Speaker 3: playing a team like the Cops that you know, they
- 3:51Speaker 3: might not push their starters, you know, and they might
- 3:53Speaker 3: go bumping and uh Like, it's a completely different game.
- 3:57Speaker 3: But at the end of the day, you have to
- 3:59Speaker 3: be ready for uh everything that they can throw at you.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Uh in control the teams that you can't control. But
- 4:07Speaker 3: we didn't play well against the Nationals. We didn't play
- 4:10Speaker 3: well against Miami. Uh, you know, a couple of weeks ago,
- 4:14Speaker 3: and we got them next after this series.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Uh. So, you know, for me and for all of
- 4:18Speaker 2: those years, win.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Today, Mendy, with the state of the starting staff, are
- 4:26Speaker 1: you surprised it got to this point based on you know,
- 4:29Speaker 1: what it looked like at the start of the season
- 4:31Speaker 1: really for what the first month and a half or
- 4:33Speaker 1: two and where you are now. Obviously the the youngsters
- 4:37Speaker 1: have been a great addition here late. But when you
- 4:40Speaker 1: looked at what the starting staff was like in spring
- 4:42Speaker 1: training and then how good it was early on in
- 4:44Speaker 1: the season, if I told you what it was going
- 4:46Speaker 1: to look like by the end of the year, with
- 4:48Speaker 1: you know, Sega still trying to figure things out in
- 4:50Speaker 1: the minors, some guys going down, some guys not looking
- 4:52Speaker 1: like themselves from last year, would you be shocked.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Yes, I'm not gonna lie. You know, people are ask
- 5:00Speaker 2: me that.
- 5:01Speaker 3: You know, if we would have asked you that three
- 5:03Speaker 3: of these kids there are when I start in the
- 5:05Speaker 3: minor leagues are going to be part of your rotation
- 5:07Speaker 3: in September, it's like no chance. Maybe one of them,
- 5:10Speaker 3: especially with how well we were throwing the ball for
- 5:13Speaker 3: the first couple of months and the death, you know,
- 5:15Speaker 3: because I kept talking about our death.
- 5:18Speaker 2: We lost Manaya in months.
- 5:20Speaker 3: The first week of spring training, and we felt comfortable
- 5:23Speaker 3: with what we had, uh, but then injuries happened, and
- 5:28Speaker 3: you know, here we are, you know, throwing three kids that,
- 5:31Speaker 3: like I said, you would have asked me in spring training,
- 5:33Speaker 3: what were the chances and I was saying maybe one
- 5:36Speaker 3: and maybe out of the bullpen.
- 5:38Speaker 2: And but you got to give those guys credit.
- 5:40Speaker 3: You got to give people in player development a lot
- 5:43Speaker 3: of credit because they put themselves, uh in this kid
- 5:47Speaker 3: in a position where whatever there was a need here
- 5:49Speaker 3: at the big league club. Uh, they were options, and
- 5:51Speaker 3: here they are and we're counting on them.
- 5:55Speaker 5: Mandy if if if you guys, I've been saying this
- 5:58Speaker 5: for months. I'm sticking with you. You guys are getting in, Okay,
- 6:00Speaker 5: I mean I've been saying it for months. You guys
- 6:02Speaker 5: are Yeah. Plus you're playing the Cubs, and you know
- 6:04Speaker 5: I wrote against anybody playing the Cubs. So, uh, you
- 6:07Speaker 5: have to win. You have to win these games. But
- 6:10Speaker 5: if and when you guys get in, will you start
- 6:14Speaker 5: the three? You know, Manaiyah Peterson obviously has been really
- 6:19Speaker 5: good for y'all. But I know you you're gonna say, oh,
- 6:21Speaker 5: one game at a time, but you've had to have
- 6:23Speaker 5: taken a small look at trying to set some sort
- 6:26Speaker 5: of a rotation. Uh would it be a sprote McLain
- 6:30Speaker 5: Peterson kind of deal or would you fall back into
- 6:34Speaker 5: the to the veterans in that first round series?
- 6:38Speaker 2: Well, I mean we got to get in right.
- 6:40Speaker 6: Uh.
- 6:41Speaker 5: I trust that you're gonna get in. Okay, I've already
- 6:43Speaker 5: said I've been banging the drum for a month now, Mandy,
- 6:47Speaker 5: so you got to listen to me.
- 6:49Speaker 2: I will continue to listen to you. No, I think
- 6:52Speaker 2: I don't think we have the locks with me right now.
- 6:54Speaker 3: To start thinking, okay, how are we going to line
- 6:57Speaker 3: these guys up? I think, hey, you know, we got
- 7:00Speaker 3: Peterson tonight, we got Jonah tom tomorrow, and then you know,
- 7:05Speaker 3: we'll take it one day at a time, and uh
- 7:08Speaker 3: maybe these goes.
- 7:09Speaker 2: All the way down to the last day, who knows, I.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Mean, and then we're not probably gonna be in a
- 7:13Speaker 3: position where it like we start lining up people like
- 7:16Speaker 3: right now, everything's on the table, all hands on deck,
- 7:19Speaker 3: and uh, you know we'll make those decisions when we.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Have to FT fam.
- 7:25Speaker 1: It's still time for you to check out what bathing
- 7:29Speaker 1: sit you're wearing and why it's not Fair Harbor. Can
- 7:32Speaker 1: we get a little show and tell from aerk krats.
- 7:36Speaker 3: Nice?
- 7:37Speaker 4: I mean, unfortunately you can't even see all the little intricacies.
- 7:40Speaker 4: We got sharks, we got patterns, we got waves, we
- 7:44Speaker 4: got sailboats. Oh and they feel super buttery on your skin.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Can you show us the liner so people can understand
- 7:53Speaker 1: how it's different, because I've actually been taking it up.
- 7:55Speaker 1: I was different vacation.
- 7:58Speaker 4: I got the unique liner too, I got the I
- 8:00Speaker 4: got the baby blue John. Something about it. I don't
- 8:03Speaker 4: know like it pops.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Head to Fairharbor Clothing dot com slash foul twenty and
- 8:09Speaker 1: use code foul twenty foul two zero for twenty percent
- 8:12Speaker 1: off your order. Once again, that's Fair h A R
- 8:15Speaker 1: B O R Clothing dot com backslash foul twenty for
- 8:19Speaker 1: twenty percent off. Make sure you use that promo code
- 8:22Speaker 1: foul twenty so they know FT sent you.
- 8:24Speaker 4: All right, We've been talking about pitching the whole time.
- 8:26Speaker 4: I want to go to the lineup. Can you believe
- 8:29Speaker 4: that you're getting what you're getting out of the lineup.
- 8:32Speaker 4: I'm not talking about Wan Soto having career home runs
- 8:35Speaker 4: and doing exactly what he was brought in to do.
- 8:38Speaker 4: Lynn Door is right about where you thought he would be.
- 8:41Speaker 4: Pete's up and down, but banging a bunch of homers,
- 8:44Speaker 4: like all the way down through Baby and Francisco Alverarez
- 8:49Speaker 4: in a bomb in the order. Do you need to
- 8:51Speaker 4: expect more from your lineup because of what the struggles
- 8:54Speaker 4: of the pitching staff has been.
- 8:57Speaker 2: You know, that's you know, it's hard to describe too crazy.
- 9:01Speaker 3: Is like you said, I was talking to some of
- 9:04Speaker 3: our guys here on Sunday, its like, man like, you know,
- 9:07Speaker 3: you look at the year that Francisco's having Lindore, you know,
- 9:11Speaker 3: like what you expect out of him, you know, the
- 9:14Speaker 3: year that Soto's having p and then some of our
- 9:16Speaker 3: guys like name having a really good year, Jeff McNeil,
- 9:20Speaker 3: I'll be And then sometimes you look up and it's
- 9:23Speaker 3: only a couple of runs.
- 9:24Speaker 2: You know, it's like, man like, what's going on? It's weird.
- 9:29Speaker 3: It's a strange that the fact that you know we're
- 9:34Speaker 3: so streaky, you know, and then you look up in
- 9:36Speaker 3: some of the numbers and some of the seasons that
- 9:38Speaker 3: these guys are having individually, they're like right there, you know,
- 9:41Speaker 3: along with the expectations that we had going into this year.
- 9:46Speaker 2: You know, I just I feel like, you know, everybody
- 9:48Speaker 2: talks about our pitch and all that, we've just been
- 9:50Speaker 2: an inconsistent team for months. You know, whenever we hit,
- 9:54Speaker 2: we don't page. Whenever we pitch, we don't hit.
- 9:56Speaker 3: And we haven't been playing uh, you know, there's been
- 9:58Speaker 3: stretches where we haven't been playing good defense in you know,
- 10:03Speaker 3: here we are in this position. But hey, man, like
- 10:05Speaker 3: there's not looking back now, like today's a pretty important
- 10:08Speaker 3: game and we got to get ready for that one.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Mandy with a lineup essentially stay the same, or have
- 10:15Speaker 1: you had any thoughts of doing anything different and also
- 10:18Speaker 1: just playing off what you're saying when you look at
- 10:20Speaker 1: so many of the individual stats and how they look
- 10:23Speaker 1: good for the Stars and even some of the supporting staff,
- 10:27Speaker 1: do you think, hey, maybe I should try and I
- 10:29Speaker 1: don't know, shuffle things up. I know it's easier said
- 10:31Speaker 1: than done. It's always the question we get from fans,
- 10:33Speaker 1: like right now chats loaded up, Hey, ask if you
- 10:36Speaker 1: should move up baby, or you know there's a lot
- 10:38Speaker 1: of questions like that that arise. How much does that
- 10:40Speaker 1: factor in for you and the staff to think about?
- 10:44Speaker 3: I mean we think about it, we talk about it,
- 10:47Speaker 3: and would you continue to find for ways to put
- 10:49Speaker 3: these guys in position where hey man, let's see if
- 10:52Speaker 3: this can click here today we have an announced the
- 10:55Speaker 3: line up, but I got name a plane center and
- 10:57Speaker 3: I got marked planing left. Physically, he's through a point
- 11:01Speaker 3: where like, hey man, we need to push you and
- 11:03Speaker 3: he's good to go. So we haven't done that pretty
- 11:06Speaker 3: much a whole year trying to take care of him.
- 11:07Speaker 3: But here we are, and you know we're doing that today,
- 11:13Speaker 3: like I said, and then yeah, I think that's one
- 11:16Speaker 3: of the small adjustments. But the whole year, I mean
- 11:20Speaker 3: thinking with whether it's peed the third neme or fourth.
- 11:23Speaker 2: On Sunday I flipped those two.
- 11:25Speaker 3: Uh. You know you're always looking for ways to help
- 11:27Speaker 3: these guys and you know that's what we'll continue to do.
- 11:30Speaker 4: Here it's Sanger done for the year. Can you can
- 11:36Speaker 4: you comment on that? Is that something that has been
- 11:40Speaker 4: discussed with the team that maybe he's done and it's
- 11:43Speaker 4: a reset.
- 11:46Speaker 3: No, I wouldn't say he's done. He threw a li
- 11:49Speaker 3: VP today. I just got that report before I got on.
- 11:52Speaker 3: He's down in Florida. He threw a LIVP forty five pitches,
- 11:56Speaker 3: you know. So now obviously he's gonna get his three
- 12:00Speaker 3: or four days and then we'll see where we're at.
- 12:02Speaker 3: But I wouldn't say he's done.
- 12:05Speaker 4: I mean, there was this time about this time last year,
- 12:08Speaker 4: you gave this one to Yeah, you gave us AJ
- 12:11Speaker 4: and he didn't quite know at the time, but it
- 12:13Speaker 4: was it set you guys on a run. So maybe
- 12:15Speaker 4: he's there for you. Yesterday off day, I had asked
- 12:19Speaker 4: we had somebody with the Tigers on and I said
- 12:21Speaker 4: they had an off day too. Is that a great
- 12:24Speaker 4: off day based on the struggles that you've had a
- 12:27Speaker 4: time to reset or was it a terrible off day
- 12:30Speaker 4: for you because you're like, I just want to see
- 12:33Speaker 4: another game. I need to see us back in playoff,
- 12:36Speaker 4: you know, controlling our own destiny. How was your off
- 12:39Speaker 4: day and what'd you do?
- 12:41Speaker 2: Yeah? I know, he was a nice off day here
- 12:43Speaker 2: in Chicago.
- 12:44Speaker 6: I had the family with me, so he's always good
- 12:48Speaker 6: to kind of take that day and reset and get
- 12:51Speaker 6: your mind off a little bit as much as you can.
- 12:55Speaker 2: But yeah, I think the way we see it here, just.
- 12:58Speaker 3: Kind of get you mine out of it, disconnect for
- 13:01Speaker 3: a little bit, uh, and then back at it today,
- 13:03Speaker 3: you know, especially after that tough weekend that's serious against
- 13:06Speaker 3: the Nationals. Uh, that past the past two games Saturday
- 13:10Speaker 3: and Sunday, we didn't get the job done. Having an
- 13:13Speaker 3: off day here, just kind of, like I said, get
- 13:14Speaker 3: your mind out of it and then just get ready
- 13:17Speaker 3: for a pretty important week.
- 13:21Speaker 5: Mandy. When you we were playing the Nationals, you just
- 13:23Speaker 5: brought it up. When when when the guy but Jacob Young,
- 13:28Speaker 5: Jacob Young, you know that's his name, made those two catches?
- 13:31Speaker 5: Were you like especially the first one the second one
- 13:34Speaker 5: and you see a little bit more often, but the
- 13:36Speaker 5: first one. Do you just look up at the heavens
- 13:38Speaker 5: and say, why, Like what the heck is going on?
- 13:41Speaker 5: Because that's one of the best catches I've ever seen,
- 13:44Speaker 5: and it happened against you in a playoff race. Like
- 13:46Speaker 5: can't he just kick it a little to the left
- 13:49Speaker 5: or a little to the right or the ball hit
- 13:51Speaker 5: the ground and we get some runs and we're feeling
- 13:53Speaker 5: good about ourselves.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Elite center fielder that looked like Lionel Messi do it?
- 14:01Speaker 3: You know like, oh my, Like I've turned to my
- 14:04Speaker 3: right and I was like, giddy, I've never seen anything
- 14:06Speaker 3: like that, you know, like, what are the chances that
- 14:08Speaker 3: the ball comes out and he kicks it and he's
- 14:10Speaker 3: able to control the baseball? You know, like like you
- 14:13Speaker 3: mentioned they wont in the ninth inning. Uh, you know
- 14:15Speaker 3: that happens a lot, right, But that first one on
- 14:18Speaker 3: Baby leading off an inning, he was like, this is
- 14:22Speaker 3: hard to believe.
- 14:22Speaker 2: But hey, man, like nobody's gonna feel sorry for us.
- 14:25Speaker 2: We got to keep going, all right.
- 14:27Speaker 4: We see your three rookie pitchers that have stepped up
- 14:30Speaker 4: in a big way, each in different times. McClain, Tong
- 14:33Speaker 4: and sprot What is the characteristic that you want to
- 14:37Speaker 4: see most from those guys? We see the balls moving
- 14:40Speaker 4: every which way. Tong's got the you know, late life
- 14:43Speaker 4: from a small person, delivery, long extension. What's the one
- 14:48Speaker 4: characteristic that you want to see that you'll be like,
- 14:51Speaker 4: I know I can go to that guy even though
- 14:53Speaker 4: he's a rookie when we make the playoffs.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Yeah. Look, I mean they all got at least off.
- 14:58Speaker 2: I think it's just they're ability to make adjustments, you.
- 15:02Speaker 3: Know, like having an understanding what a lineup, what hitters
- 15:05Speaker 3: are trying to do to you.
- 15:07Speaker 2: For me, that's the number one correcter, is.
- 15:09Speaker 3: You know, and especially for guys that are just getting
- 15:13Speaker 3: to the league here, and they've shown that. You know,
- 15:16Speaker 3: we've seen how lineups are trying to make adjustments to Nolan,
- 15:19Speaker 3: to Jonah thone and even to Sprotty, you know, and
- 15:23Speaker 3: you know, after the first time through the lineup, watching
- 15:26Speaker 3: them go out there and make some adjustments, or even
- 15:29Speaker 3: in between at bats, the way some of the hitters
- 15:31Speaker 3: are taking pictures, or how aggressive they are against certain
- 15:35Speaker 3: pictures and in certain situations, and you know, you watch
- 15:39Speaker 3: them and just their ability to make adjustments and recognize that, hey,
- 15:43Speaker 3: all right, they're doing this, like, but I can also
- 15:45Speaker 3: make this adjustment and go with this. So for me,
- 15:48Speaker 3: it's just the their ability to make some adjustments in
- 15:51Speaker 3: game is what's been pretty impressive from my end.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Hey, Mandy, last one at the finish line here. We've
- 15:59Speaker 1: seen some of the numbers come out from the Mets
- 16:02Speaker 1: Org about the attendance, and the numbers were fantastic, as expected,
