Can a person's whole life become a message? Today we read Jeremiah chapters 16 through 18, where God gives Jeremiah one of the most radical commands in Scripture: do not marry, do not have children, do not enter a house of mourning or a house of feasting. His solitary life is itself the sign, a warning that the coming devastation will disrupt every normal structure of society. Even this hard word carries a promise, though—after destruction, restoration and renewed relationship with God will follow.
