Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Hey, welcome back to North Florida Sports Network, alabama coach Nick Saban calling it quits.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Nick is done, he is done.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Seven national championships.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Is it Alabama?
- 0:31Speaker 1: Professionalized the game really.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Yeah, he turned the.
- 0:35Speaker 1: It seemed like he changed it.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Right.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Well, he was the first one to turn football offices and operation into like an NFL front office type of deal.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Right.
- 0:49Speaker 2: In terms of yeah yeah.
- 0:50Speaker 2: And I mean the, the investment that Alabama put back into the infrastructure, the quote unquote, enriching the student athlete for football player and eventually in their, in their athletic department.
- 1:05Speaker 2: It just kept trickling down, right, he revolutionized it that way.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Were you, were you surprised?
- 1:12Speaker 1: Yeah, really.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:17Speaker 1: I don't think I was.
- 1:18Speaker 1: I kind of saw.
- 1:19Speaker 2: I knew it would be eventually, but I didn't.
- 1:20Speaker 2: I didn't think it would be.
- 1:21Speaker 2: I don't know if there was just so much left, kind of unfinished, kind of you know.
- 1:28Speaker 1: But at the same time I think with the NIL change in it you know I really do Like you said.
- 1:34Speaker 1: I mean he you put that infrastructure in.
- 1:37Speaker 1: He was all for having the best facilities, making it easy for the players to develop those players to be good and he did that right better than anybody.
- 1:44Speaker 1: But now that it's become more of.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Just like you have to pay these guys before we have it.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Then I got to go yell at them and they're just going to leave.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Well, the leaving part, I think, is what?
- 1:55Speaker 2: What hits coaches more than so than the NIL and paying the kids?
- 2:00Speaker 2: It's the fact that, just you know these kids will bail in two years and I don't get my full four years with them, right, you know, like I wanted to.
- 2:07Speaker 2: You know we work hard with these kids when they're freshmen and sophomores and you want to see them develop through your program.
- 2:14Speaker 2: I, yeah, and he's you know, he's 72 years old man, he's, you know, a guy's been doing it for a long time.
- 2:22Speaker 2: So eventually it just it dawns on you.
- 2:26Speaker 2: You got to, you got to sit down with it.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Yeah Well, landing coach, landing from Oregon, has turned down the Alabama job.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Right, well, he's it as a announced that he's not going anywhere?
- 2:40Speaker 1: He's not going anywhere yet.
- 2:43Speaker 2: I don't think he specifically turned down Right Right.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Right, but it's hard.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Who knows it's.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Whatever Jimmy Sexton says how it's going to go down, he represents everybody.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Super agent yeah, he's eating good.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Yeah, he is in every neighborhood All at once.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Every neighborhood.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Jimmy Sexton is Does not miss a meal.
- 3:01Speaker 2: He's eating.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Good for all of that.
- 3:03Speaker 1: I mean he's.
- 3:04Speaker 1: It's really incredible that he, you know he represents like every coach, he runs the sport he really does.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:12Speaker 2: It's incredible, but you know when the game is not being played in the off season, like that's when he dictates what's going on Norvell.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Now is the odds favorite, so betting, I think.
- 3:24Speaker 2: I think, uh, I think the board.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Jumped and jumped them.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Yeah, but I mean it's you can't tell anything off, just Vegas yeah but landing was a slam dunk, you know, four hours ago right on their board.
- 3:38Speaker 1: That just doesn't.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Yeah, it's based off, I think it means that you have a good coach.
- 3:44Speaker 1: I think that is.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 3:46Speaker 2: He's definitely, he's definitely a target.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Right and I get just funny, but he really knows to what degree Um you hear chatter about the culture here from you know said fans or whatever kind of shows you how crazy College football is.
- 4:04Speaker 1: I mean that is he changed that town to football fans and and school athletic departments.
- 4:11Speaker 2: You know the football offices are completely disconnected from each other in terms of reality.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Right what?
- 4:17Speaker 2: What football fans think?
- 4:19Speaker 2: You know that the athletic department thinks you know, or you know who's looking at coaches, and they're like completely different mm-hmm some of the times they'll hit on it.
- 4:28Speaker 2: You know, if a guy sucks at recruiting and and the fans are like I don't know, you know he's not that strong or recruit, yes, stuff like that.
- 4:34Speaker 2: But this, this culture, talk and anything like that that was coming from any Alabama fans or any of that like that's completely disconnected from what the guys in the athletic department think.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Obviously they look at norvel and see what he did in the period of time right, he did it well, they're going, all the names that are mentioned.
- 4:57Speaker 1: That it's just a.
- 4:58Speaker 1: It is a.
- 4:59Speaker 1: It's one of the best jobs in the sport, right?
- 5:01Speaker 1: And so you're going to mention the top coaches in the sport, right?
- 5:06Speaker 1: So if you were, you know it should be obviously they.
- 5:10Speaker 2: He just won the coach of the year yeah, he won the uh, what was the bobby dod trophy?
- 5:16Speaker 2: And the bare brian award?
- 5:17Speaker 2: Yep, one one, a couple of those.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Um right, he did as good a job as anybody in the country, probably better than than anybody would you?
- 5:28Speaker 1: would you go to alabama after nick savon me?
- 5:31Speaker 1: No, not.
- 5:33Speaker 1: No, I don't think it's about the money no, yeah, it's not about the money going pay to the coach, right it's.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Would you want to follow that?
- 5:44Speaker 1: Do you have unfinished business where you're here?
- 5:47Speaker 1: You know it depends on what, how you look at it for me.
- 5:52Speaker 2: I would just look at it as a as a quality of life from a stress standpoint.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Yeah, now we're roughly the same age, us and us and norvel.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Crazy, he wired differently.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Honestly, I don't.
- 6:04Speaker 2: I don't know if he thinks about things like that high stress.
- 6:07Speaker 2: I know that that coaches like mike norvel, like dan lane, would not be afraid to go after savon and you know to to follow I don't think he's scared like that no, it's more about, like you said is like you know, is he still hungry here?
- 6:23Speaker 2: does he still feel like there's more to do here, right?
- 6:26Speaker 2: Um, you know that that nobody can really ever know except the coach.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Well, I mean, you look at landing right.
- 6:32Speaker 1: He went to oregon right.
- 6:34Speaker 2: They had just lost yeah taggart and mario at the time they lost them.
- 6:39Speaker 1: They didn't want to get rid of them, right, mario at the time he left.
- 6:42Speaker 1: He didn't.
- 6:42Speaker 1: They didn't want to get rid of him.
- 6:43Speaker 1: So the next guy obviously they're gonna make it more important on him.
- 6:49Speaker 1: And this is a guy who's even younger 37 years old.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Yeah and I'm gonna, I'm gonna be honest with you, man, the fact he wanted to go back into that fire that he just came from the fact that he, he, you know he's got experience there right and you know he's coached at alabama.
- 7:04Speaker 2: He coached at georgia.
- 7:05Speaker 2: He knows what georgia is currently.
- 7:07Speaker 2: He knows what alabama can be when it's running right full strength, but he, he's also at a school where no one's done that ever exactly and you're the first guy to win a title at a school is is something that is obviously huge for dan land and you have all the nikey back right and you're in the big 10 now.
- 7:26Speaker 1: So you have you can bring that all those connections you have from the south and take it out there and be that right in that region.
- 7:35Speaker 1: I was.
- 7:35Speaker 2: I was surprised that he he did announce that he's staying at organ.
- 7:38Speaker 2: I figured he would take the job.
- 7:40Speaker 2: The fact that he didn't um, that is extremely impressive from a coach you know, 37 years old to, to be able to just think ahead like that.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Well, you know what, I'm gonna be the first guy to do it here and right now.
- 7:53Speaker 2: We got this thing rolling and it's just gonna be like the recommitment kind of like when billy donovan turned down the magic and then, you know, came back to florida and there's like, oh my god, he wants to be at florida instead of coaching the nba.
- 8:05Speaker 1: They just took him where you know if you invest so much work and so much and you can see the all the hard work that might nobiles put into it.
- 8:13Speaker 1: You know, you see it firsthand and and I do you want to just leave that you know and let it that bad taste in the amount, the way it ended.
- 8:22Speaker 1: You know it'd be different right the time.
- 8:25Speaker 2: The timing is definitely.
- 8:26Speaker 2: It's just he deserves a better way.
- 8:29Speaker 1: I mean I don't think there's ever good timing, but no, no, there's not.
- 8:32Speaker 1: But I mean he's got it going here.
- 8:36Speaker 1: You know he had just he pulled, pulled it out.
- 8:39Speaker 1: You know he yeah, it was hot seat for him a couple years ago and he's got that turned around here.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Do you want to go jump into another heat fire?
- 8:50Speaker 1: That's going to be bigger than that ever was for way less Like if you lose a game, none, none the less a few, like four games.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Right, I mean that's not going to be.
- 9:01Speaker 1: That's not going to be two.
- 9:02Speaker 1: They're going to be like what's wrong.
- 9:04Speaker 2: It's not only not only wins and losses.
- 9:06Speaker 2: You know, think, take recruiting, for instance.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Think things that have happened to Florida State the past few classes, like that kind of stuff isn't tolerated by the Alabama fan base.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Now not after what?
- 9:21Speaker 2: 17 years of Nick Saban and the way that Alabama has just been a machine.
- 9:27Speaker 2: You know, finishing number four, number five, is the Valley of the recruiting Right For Alabama and that's something that Florida State is still trying Like.
- 9:38Speaker 2: There are other things that Mike Norvell kind of has used and things that he worked, for instance, you know the transfer portal.
- 9:46Speaker 2: You know loyalty to assistant coaches.
- 9:51Speaker 2: You know that's something that that really isn't tolerated so much in Alabama.
- 9:56Speaker 2: You know that's one thing about Nick Saban is he was.
- 9:59Speaker 2: You know he's excellent at hiring assistants and evaluating his assistants, but he was also very, very quick to find one that was a miss and exit them.
- 10:10Speaker 2: You know, in whatever way he had to Right Usually a respectable way Guy takes another job somewhere else and it's just yeah, get out of here, we'll replace you.
- 10:17Speaker 2: But things that you know Mike Norvell would have to get more accustomed to say if he were to take take a job, like Alabama.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Right.
- 10:27Speaker 2: And again, that's part of following Nick Saban that means you're doing something right, yeah, yeah, and we already knew he was doing something right, man.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Florida State fans would be.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Oh, it would be just a really good punch.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Yeah, it would, it would.
- 10:44Speaker 2: It would be a rough one, you know.
- 10:48Speaker 1: It would signal, you know how, like a.
- 10:52Speaker 1: What do we like?
- 10:53Speaker 1: A layer below, for sure now, because not based on results, just based on what money or, you know, allegiance, or network affiliate affiliation, you know, I don't know that you don't want to go down that road, but kind of see it playing out Well sometimes.
- 11:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I mean you tell me, like no they, that no one knew Saban was going to retire and that didn't have anything to do with them making the playoff.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Oh, oh yeah.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Well, I mean, I don't think they needed that.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Right.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Like honestly, like yeah, I don't think they needed that, but that's still.
- 11:30Speaker 2: I think, um right, I think had anybody known ahead of time, you know, like in the TV world and the execs, that Nick Saban, this was his last year, you would have seen.
- 11:42Speaker 1: Someone like Nick.
- 11:43Speaker 2: No, he's not.
- 11:44Speaker 2: He's not tipping his hand.
- 11:45Speaker 1: I know, but to the right person.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Yeah, people suspect, but I knew it could help him get in the in the playoff.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Right, but what I'm saying is I don't think Nick thought that he'd have to like.
- 11:56Speaker 2: Let's think, if he thought that way, I think he would know that.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Dude, I don't have to resort to that.
- 12:00Speaker 2: We're Alabama, we won the SEC.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Like they're gonna put us in, I don't.
- 12:05Speaker 1: That's what I meant.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Yeah, but I mean no, they wouldn't need to know that it's Nick Saban's last year.
- 12:09Speaker 2: It's Nick Saban.
- 12:11Speaker 1: It could have.
- 12:12Speaker 2: You know it's Nick Saban.
- 12:13Speaker 2: I could they weren't keeping him out if he won the SEC.
- 12:16Speaker 1: And you could see things that he said after the NIL that were different, and you could see that he was trying to say the best thing he could at the time, but it was something that I don't know if he was gonna be fully invested in for that long Like he saw it riding on the wall.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I think NIL and TransSportal and the whole kind of just.
- 12:40Speaker 1: That was like all right, that's it.
- 12:41Speaker 2: Yeah, wild free agency.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Yeah, that's it, this is why I wanted to come back.
- 12:45Speaker 1: I was in the NFL.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Right.
- 12:48Speaker 1: I came back and you're right.
- 12:49Speaker 2: I mean, I don't think he's gonna have the patience now to wait for anything to be done about it you know, in terms of Right, when he's getting into.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Yeah, so he's just walked away.
- 12:59Speaker 2: That's definitely a huge, huge aspect of it, but he's also he's 72.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Yeah, and his family.
- 13:06Speaker 1: It's a good time honestly yeah.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Yeah, so it.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Go out on top.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:12Speaker 1: I mean nobody In this day and age.
- 13:14Speaker 1: He set the standard, you know, for the entire sport.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Right he kind of reshaped.
- 13:22Speaker 1: What football?
- 13:23Speaker 2: programs are supposed to look like and how they should be run, and you know now.
- 13:26Speaker 2: You see.
- 13:27Speaker 1: He had one year, one season.
- 13:30Speaker 1: It's an FSU.
- 13:32Speaker 2: The one season that they were bad.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Right and then after that.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Took off.
- 13:37Speaker 1: He did not have a bad season at all.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Right it only took one season for him to be able to sell like.
- 13:42Speaker 2: This is what happens when we do it your way to.
- 13:45Speaker 2: You know the money guy, you know the boosters, anybody who was supporting financially.
- 13:52Speaker 1: He set up the infrastructure.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Right, like I said, he can get players, man, he didn't need money to go and recruit great players.
- 14:00Speaker 2: I mean sure, maybe here and there.
- 14:03Speaker 1: He needed the stuff to help develop them.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Yeah, he's just like I'll get the great players.
- 14:07Speaker 2: You make sure that everything I told you to have ready is ready for him.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Exactly, and that.
- 14:14Speaker 2: You saw Jimbo got here and even tried to do it a little bit.
- 14:17Speaker 2: You see Kirby doing it at UGA.
- 14:20Speaker 2: You see a lot of guys that have spent time there, kind of under, even laying up at Ole Miss.
- 14:26Speaker 1: like he understands, like listen, once we get the guys here, you have to invest in the kids, and then now it's in an all time, because now you basically have to raise money for players, right, and you have to have that.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Yeah, let alone.
- 14:44Speaker 1: I mean you need to win and you need to develop and all that, but you're going to have to have enough to get in the door.
- 14:49Speaker 1: I think it's hard for coaches and that's tough for the handle and that's why I think he's ultimately yeah, they view the NIL and the money that's being thrown around as Not that he's against paying players Right.
- 15:00Speaker 2: But it's an opportunity for people that don't have the player's best interests in mind to get attached and get you know.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Sometimes just bad situations happen, man, and you know it's getting crazy, it's 72.
- 15:15Speaker 2: I don't know why we need to put up with that.
- 15:18Speaker 2: No.
- 15:19Speaker 1: He's on a TV show every week.
- 15:22Speaker 1: This year that was new.
- 15:24Speaker 1: So like you're telling me, maybe, that he wasn't gonna.
- 15:28Speaker 1: He kind of knew he was gonna be.
- 15:31Speaker 1: Oh, I'm gonna work for the ESPN, so he obviously had a relationship with them, yeah, so he's probably gonna add I mean, it's Nick saving yeah and he's probably gonna be offered Every job and under the Sun.
- 15:44Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I would.
- 15:47Speaker 2: I wouldn't be surprised if he just kind of chilled out for for a little bit.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Yeah, didn't jump back into any kind of busy schedule.
- 15:54Speaker 2: I mean, commercials are one thing, but yeah, you know, I saw the the rumors about him being the replacement, for course.
- 16:01Speaker 2: So I don't, I don't know if I would Expect him to do something like that immediately, right, but you know giant, giant that was different.
- 16:11Speaker 1: That was more like just a transition move to see, if you want, even like doing that probably.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Yeah doing that this year.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Why, why, why would he ever?
- 16:20Speaker 1: Someone like that, some drill sergeant type person like that, is gonna do that every Thursday?
- 16:27Speaker 2: Like the big day of prep.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Yeah, like that's a huge day yeah he's definitely, definitely yeah he made time for it with a plan, so I don't.
- 16:35Speaker 1: I think he knew he was leaving.
- 16:39Speaker 1: I think someone like that well, there's, there's also.
- 16:42Speaker 1: I think they've known yeah and they're, and Whether or not that decided or impacted the committee's decision.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Good God, but I wouldn't be shocked at anything.
- 16:54Speaker 2: But it's that was.
- 16:56Speaker 2: That would just be overkill.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Yeah you know, like they, like I'm saying like they they wouldn't need that to be the Final push.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Well, they can do whatever they want.
- 17:04Speaker 2: They wrote it in the bylaw, so right, but Alabama was always gonna get in.
- 17:09Speaker 1: Right, right, right.
- 17:09Speaker 1: They won the SEC right.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Okay, well, it's the other.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Yeah, who's now?
- 17:15Speaker 2: They have no, no coach.
- 17:17Speaker 2: So you got Washington coach to lower.
- 17:20Speaker 2: Yeah, kailen DeBoer.
- 17:22Speaker 2: He bore sorry, you know, he I mean they go back and forth, him and Norval they're the two hottest names left that that haven't distanced themselves either of those guys After the season you just had at the programs you've had them at, why would you leave To go to the Hornets nest?
- 17:45Speaker 1: That is the best coach of all times, standard.
- 17:47Speaker 1: I mean that's what you're heading into.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Yeah, you gotta be in it every year the playoff, every single season, the challenge.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Now it's not as hard now, so but yeah, yeah, I should FSU fans be worried, what do you think?
- 18:06Speaker 1: Yeah, without question.
- 18:09Speaker 2: I mean yeah, oh boy.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Well, that would be fitting.
- 18:17Speaker 1: You know, just that would.
- 18:21Speaker 2: That would be so Crazy you know you go, there's no reason to no reason to not be, and then you get the guys the guys names being thrown around with it, with it loss, and then the coach retires and then Replace by the team that jumped you.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Yeah, it's kind of some cruel twist of man, Hmm, but you know it is what it is.
- 18:45Speaker 2: You just kind of find who's next on the coaching, the coaching board.
- 18:55Speaker 1: Right, right, I mean, I think I don't know, man, I what do you?
- 19:02Speaker 1: I don't know anything.
- 19:02Speaker 1: I tell you what Jimmy Sexton knows.
- 19:06Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean he's not.
- 19:07Speaker 2: He's eating, no matter what he's eating good.
- 19:08Speaker 2: He's eating good, no matter what like.
- 19:11Speaker 1: He's gonna get a deal and a cut of some T-bone or steak, no matter what that's.
- 19:17Speaker 1: That's a guarantee.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Because Norville still recruiting, still locking up commenced, they got the D end.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Yeah, they got big toko out of Oregon State.
- 19:25Speaker 2: You know so, over a period of time, not losing your taste and Straight up and not winning someator.
- 19:29Speaker 2: You know that.
- 19:30Speaker 2: That kids, he's bringing a lot of experience in the guy.
- 19:35Speaker 2: That's gonna.
- 19:35Speaker 2: He's one of those effort guys.
- 19:37Speaker 2: Again you're gonna get a lot of toughness out of them.
- 19:39Speaker 2: You know they're bringing in visitors this weekend, man transfer guys.
- 19:42Speaker 2: So all operations are are normal at fsu.
- 19:46Speaker 2: But again there's there's this wild speculation man, giant, giant elephant in the room crimson tide elephant, if you will.
- 19:56Speaker 2: So it's a.
- 19:58Speaker 2: I mean, you gotta be concerned.
- 20:00Speaker 2: His name is being being mentioned a lot.
- 20:03Speaker 2: So if you're a florida state fan, you're right.
- 20:05Speaker 1: Well, that's gonna happen when you have a good coach.
- 20:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean they are mentioned Sarkeesian.
- 20:10Speaker 1: You know they mention every coach pretty much.
- 20:13Speaker 1: That was top of the charts.
- 20:15Speaker 1: What's?
- 20:19Speaker 1: What's it gonna be?
- 20:20Speaker 1: We'll find out.
- 20:21Speaker 1: They say they want to find out in the next 72 hours and it's been like 24, so yeah, maybe by midnight tomorrow night one way well, they got to do something, man, one way or the other.
- 20:35Speaker 2: What the worst thing to do is just hang out here on all kinds of things yeah, I mean, you got some, some moves to make very quickly.
- 20:45Speaker 2: If that that does happen, we won't get there until we're there.
- 20:50Speaker 1: No, no, no no, right now it's just speculation, it's hot speculation it is.
- 20:57Speaker 2: You can take it with a grain of salt, but maybe, maybe not.
- 21:05Speaker 1: I was looking forward to just doing some hoops, you know oh no hoops man.
- 21:11Speaker 1: No, no, no, no, no.
- 21:12Speaker 1: Yeah, we got to be both coaches.
- 21:18Speaker 1: We already lost Willie Simmons this year.
- 21:19Speaker 1: Yeah, that'd be like a, I mean, and I'd have it happen again to a change of course, to go to the ACC and then dip out to us we'll see, you know.
- 21:36Speaker 1: Do you want to go to a place like that, where I mean it offers a lot of perks.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Man, yeah, get great money, access to the best players, best resources.
- 21:49Speaker 2: The con is, you know, the expectation is going to be titles pretty much every two or three years, or your, your ass is out of here yeah, well, we'll find out and we'll react to it, we'll talk about it, we'll do it right here on the North Florida Sports Network.
