- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Amharic with Fexingo. I am Lucas. Luna: And I am Luna. Hey everyone. It is great to be here again. Lucas: Yes. We have been talking about colors and kitchen items lately. Luna: Right. I finally know my knife from my spoon. Lucas: That is good progress. But today we are going outside. Luna: Outside? To a market? Lucas: Exactly. A local market. We need breakfast supplies. Luna: Oh. I love markets. They are so colorful. Lucas: They are. But first we need words. Today we learn two items. Luna: Two items? Okay. What are they? Lucas: First is milk. In Amharic it is ወተት. Luna: ወተት. Lucas: Say it slowly. Luna: ወተት. Lucas: Perfect. Now the second item. Bread. It is ብርክን. Luna: ብርክን. Lucas: Good. Say it again. Luna: ብርክን. Lucas: Great. Now let us put them into questions. Luna: Questions? Like asking if the shop has them? Lucas: Yes. You want to ask the seller. So we add አለህ? That means 'do you have?' Luna: Okay. So for milk it is ወተት አለህ? Lucas: Correct. Luna: ወተት አለህ? Lucas: Very good. Now for bread. Luna: ብርክን አለህ? Lucas: Excellent. Let us repeat those a few times to lock them in. Luna: Let me try. Lucas: Yes. Again. Luna: ወተት አለህ? Lucas: Now the bread one. Luna: ብርክን አለህ? Lucas: Perfect. You are getting the rhythm. Luna: I feel like I could actually buy something now. Lucas: You can. But wait. There is more. Luna: More? I thought we were done with the questions. Lucas: We are. But what if the seller says yes? And you want to buy it? Luna: Oh right. I need to ask for it politely. Lucas: Exactly. We use እባክህ. That means 'please'. Luna: እባክህ. Lucas: Then we add the word for give. Luna: ስጠኝ. Lucas: So together it is: Please give me milk. Lucas: Nice. Now do the bread version. Please give me bread. Lucas: Beautiful. Let us say that again. Lucas: And the other one. Lucas: You are doing great. One last phrase for the market. Luna: What is it? How much is it? Lucas: Yes. Yeha sint new? Or in full: ይህ ስንት ነው? Lucas: That means 'How much is this?' Lucas: Let us review all four phrases quickly. Luna: Okay. Ready. Lucas: Do you have milk? Luna: ወተት አለህ? Lucas: Do you have bread? Luna: ብርክን አለህ? Lucas: Please give me milk. Luna: እባክህ ወተት ስጠኝ Lucas: Please give me bread. Lucas: How much is this? Lucas: Spot on. Now imagine you are at the stall. Luna: Okay. I walk up. I see the milk. Lucas: What do you ask first? Luna: ወተት አለህ? Lucas: The seller smiles. He points to the bread too. Luna: Oh. Okay. Then I ask: ብርክን አለህ? Lucas: He nods. He puts both in a bag. Luna: Now I hand him money. Lucas: And for the bread? Lucas: Then you check the price tag. Lucas: It is a very smooth interaction. You sound natural. Luna: I feel confident. This is really useful. Lucas: It is. Daily life stuff.
