Transcript
- 0:01Hi, and welcome to the Seated podcast with Furniture Row.
- 0:04I'm Jessa, creative director and design extraordinaire, and I'm.
- 0:08Barb, interior designer and buyer.
- 0:10Welcome back. We're getting into a really
- 0:15controversial topic today, Barb. It's.
- 0:17So controversial. I think so.
- 0:20And you know what it is? It's rugs you haven't guessed
- 0:23from our from our set today, which if you're listening, we
- 0:29just have a bunch of rugs samples on set.
- 0:32And but they're they're nicely woven into the design.
- 0:34I think you did a good job with that.
- 0:36Thank you. Yeah.
- 0:37It's not like who dumped all those there anyway.
- 0:42Why are rugs even controversial? You know, we're going to talk
- 0:47about that. Yeah.
- 0:48It's do you use a rug or not? Yeah, how, how you know?
- 0:52And what's the right kind and how to shop for rugs because
- 0:59everybody needs to divide up their space in their home.
- 1:03Rugs are great for that. And it's really hard to know
- 1:08when you're sifting through thousands what is the best to
- 1:12buy. So we're going to give you a
- 1:14little guide here. It's.
- 1:16Hard when there's so many to choose from and nowadays it's
- 1:19like rugs galore. I yeah, yeah.
- 1:22Well, because it can really bring a room together.
- 1:24That's the point. It's.
- 1:25Like a piece of art. Really is.
- 1:27Yeah, yeah. Art everywhere.
- 1:29On the floor, on the walls. I love it.
- 1:32Well, first I'm going to go through a little bit of fact or
- 1:35fiction with you. Oh.
- 1:37About rugs cause. It's or no let's.
- 1:40Just have some some fun. This is a new new topic, new new
- 1:45little fun game that we can play.
- 1:48So, all right, the largest area rug ever made covers more than
- 1:53100 football fields and is displayed in the Palace of
- 1:56Versailles in France. True or false?
- 1:59Fact or fiction? Is it on the wall or on the
- 2:04floor? That's not disclosed.
- 2:07I'm going to say fiction. That is fiction.
- 2:12OK, well, the Palace of Versailles displays remarkable
- 2:16rugs. There is none of that size that
- 2:18exists. I mean, 100 football fields is
- 2:20pretty big. Yeah.
- 2:21I mean, Challenge is out there now for anybody because there's
- 2:24not one that exists. So if you want to try to make
- 2:27that happen, it's a record that has been uncaptured.
- 2:33Next one is the oldest rug is still in existence and was
- 2:37discovered over 2500 years ago in a frozen Siberian tomb.
- 2:45Fiction. That one's facts.
- 2:47Oh, it is, It is OK. It's called the Pazurek carpet.
- 2:53Maybe our producer can correct me at some point, but it's.
- 2:59Where is it now? It's remarkably well preserved
- 3:04and showcases detailed craftsmanship.
- 3:07So. I want to see a picture I'm.
- 3:09Thinking it's probably in Siberia still.
- 3:12Yes, Hermitage museum and Saint Petersburg, Russia.
- 3:17Oh it's in the Hermitage museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
- 3:21Which makes sense if it was found in Siberia.
- 3:26So that's cool of where Pozzuric rug, OK, you know, it wasn't
- 3:33horribly far off, but PAZYRYK, if anybody wants to look it up.
- 3:43The tufted rug industry in the United States began when New
- 3:46England sea captains brought the pattern drugs from China to
- 3:51Massachusetts in the early 1800s.
- 3:57No, I want to say that's false. Yeah.
- 4:00Just is it false? It is false.
- 4:03OK, it's fiction. The tufted rug industry actually
- 4:07became began in Dalton, GA in the early 1900s, stemming from a
- 4:14local woman's innovation. So.
- 4:17Yeah, a lot of rugs are made in Georgia.
- 4:19Really. Yeah.
- 4:20Wow. There's a lot of carpets made.
- 4:22Yeah, they've got a long history with it.
- 4:25Then the first area rugs were woven from gold dreads and used
- 4:31exclusively by Roman emperors. I want to say true.
- 4:35That's false. The first area rugs were made
- 4:38out of more common materials and available out of what was
- 4:44available. So like animal skins, natural
- 4:47fibers will, Yeah. So maybe were they used more for
- 4:53a purpose like not? Necessarily decorating, yeah.
- 4:56Yeah, like they're cold and they need.
- 4:59A rod or they don't want things to be so dusty.
- 5:01Yeah, you know they want to in the desert.
- 5:03Yeah, sounds nice. Not that that was in the desert.
- 5:09Who knows? Who knows?
- 5:10Who knows? Yeah, some ancient cultures
- 5:13valued rugs so highly that they use them as currency to barter
- 5:17for goods and services. True, That is true.
- 5:20People bartered intricate hand woven rugs in exchange for goods
- 5:24and services, making them a form of soft money in historical
- 5:28economies. And I feel like, you know,
- 5:30Facebook marketplace is kind of the same today.
- 5:33You know, we're bartering soft goods.
- 5:35Sometimes you trade. You do instead of paying.
- 5:38For it, people will ask, would you take a trade?
- 5:40So it's a lot of bartering out there.
- 5:45Ancient Egyptians believed that stepping on a rug before noon
- 5:50brought bad luck for the rest of the day.
- 5:53No. That is fiction.
- 5:56Our producer made that one up, so yeah.
- 6:03So anyway, you know, that leads us a little bit more fun, fun
- 6:08way to lead us into the rough conversation.
- 6:12And yeah, we're gonna talk about some of the biggest mistakes
- 6:16made when it comes to incorporating them into your
- 6:18home. Basically anything these
- 6:23decorating sense ladies do do the opposite is what I've
- 6:27learned. Because these.
- 6:31I used to watch the show. Oh my goodness.
- 6:34Yeah, they are a menace Together.
- 6:41They are painting the floor with paint to look like a rug.
- 6:49There they are in their matching overalls, and it's a.
- 6:52Perfectly beautiful wood floor. Yeah, it, it is.
- 6:55And I don't know how how you would refinish the.
- 6:59I don't think it'd be very easy to refinish that floor, get that
- 7:03away. Oh, and then they're putting
- 7:05decals. At first I was like, you know,
- 7:07who knows, maybe they could make it work.
- 7:11I've seen a painted wood floor that looks great.
- 7:14I mean, you know, a really cool design, but not what they're
- 7:18doing. That's scary, especially with
- 7:20the fake. Tassels it with the black
- 7:22diamonds. It looks like the Flintstones.
- 7:25Yeah. So they're doing here.
- 7:28So this is actually less bad, but she's putting in a fake
- 7:32sconce now anyway. The floor was and not good.
- 7:39I wonder if anyone will ever look back on any of our designs
- 7:42and be like, what were they thinking?
- 7:43I always think about that. I always think about that.
- 7:46But you know, I think that this video has surfaced recently
- 7:51'cause it gives everybody a good chuckle.
- 7:53So if there is something that people make fun of in the
- 7:57future, just enjoy that you gave them the laugh.
- 8:00Yeah. And that you're not these making
- 8:07the you're not making that bad of a mistake.
- 8:09That's what I know. I try to do things a little bit
- 8:14more classic, but but who knows? I mean, years and years from
- 8:19now, somebody might be having a show talking about it.
- 8:22Yeah. Talking about what we did.
- 8:25So anyway, if you don't want to paint a rug on your floor, I
- 8:31know that some people do like that painted floor rug.
- 8:36Apparently it's an antique thing that was done at some point, but
- 8:43it's just it's not for everyone and it's not always done well.
- 8:49I don't know what it's called. The practice of painting the rug
- 8:53on your floor. Mistake to.
- 8:55Me, it's like the permanent makeup of rugs and it's just,
- 8:59you know, it could be done. Well, maybe, but in a lot of
- 9:03cases, maybe not so much. Also I do.
- 9:07Love, you know, an old farmhouse with a porch paint on it.
- 9:12I do love that. What's porch paint Just.
- 9:15Porch paint for your your porch. You paint the whole porch the
- 9:18same color. You could do the same.
- 9:20Color. You could do a pattern that's
- 9:22like this, but. Painted wood.
- 9:24Yeah, but there's something very nice about that.
- 9:27Crafty. Yeah, Yeah.
- 9:29Well, OK, so if you are going to buy an actual rug though, where
- 9:32do you start? Like if you're just at the very
- 9:36beginning, say you already have a whole living room set up and
- 9:40it just needs to be tied together with a rug, how do you
- 9:42make a decision on what style and color to bring in?
- 9:47Well, that's a good question. So you already have all of your
- 9:50furniture. Do you have art in the room?
- 9:53Everything. Yeah, of art.
- 9:55So I what I would do is find out, look through magazines,
- 10:00look online, look at the styles that really speak to you,
- 10:05whether that's more traditional or transitional, contemporary,
- 10:08modern, whatever that is, maybe minimalist, And then go after
- 10:14that type of style that speaks to you most.
- 10:17And then pull colors from your room and find a rug that works
- 10:23within those colors. Yeah.
- 10:25And that's a easy paint by number.
- 10:27Same with if you do it the opposite.
- 10:29If you have nothing in the room and you're like, I don't know
- 10:31where to start. I know I do want a rug, but I
- 10:34have no clue what color palette to use.
- 10:36A rug is a great jumping off point to start with and you just
- 10:40pull colors from the rug. That's very paint by numbers,
- 10:43but it will look good at the end if you if you do it that way.
- 10:46Yeah. So in the end, you just kind of
- 10:48choose where you want the direction of that room to really
- 10:53veer to and you choose a rug accordingly and you try to tie
- 10:57together the colors that are already there or you bring in
- 11:03colors that match the rug if you don't have anything in the room,
- 11:06so. The other thing too is I have
- 11:09found I love pattern rugs. OK, a lot of pattern, but then,
- 11:15you know, it's like, do you want to live with all that pattern?
- 11:18So you have to ask yourself that question.
- 11:20And maybe you know, if you're really on the fence about a few
- 11:24rugs, maybe you bring a few home and then look at them in your
- 11:28space and whichever 1 looks best you take the other ones back.
- 11:33I'm not saying keep them in your home for months on end, that's
- 11:35not it. But just look at which ones work
- 11:38better for your your space. I find I'm I'm always going
- 11:43towards the more pattern colorful, but then when I get it
- 11:46in my home I tend to go more subdued.
- 11:49Right. Yeah, right.
- 11:50Well, yeah, because when you're shopping, that's what jumps out
- 11:53at you, the more pattern colorful.
- 11:55But I've been in the same boat and I think looking at the up
- 11:59close photos of the rug, I wouldn't buy a rug unless I
- 12:02could really zoom in on that pattern because a lot of times
- 12:06from afar the pattern looks different.
- 12:10And when you start unrolling it in your home, it's just it
- 12:13presents different than you expect.
- 12:15So just like zoom in, make sure you know what you're getting
- 12:17from afar. It probably still will look like
- 12:20it does in the zoomed out photo, but it's helpful to zoom in.
- 12:24And yeah, I think that just maybe taking a photo, like
- 12:31usually I'll put a like a screenshot from my computer if
- 12:34I'm shopping online or a photo from the store if I'm shopping
- 12:38in a store, kind of in context of my space.
- 12:43So I'll like take a photo of my space and then that sort of the
- 12:45rug and like kind of collage it and there's like, you know, you
- 12:49can either like put them right next to each other on your phone
- 12:52or in Canva or something like that.
- 12:54That's. An easy way to look at.
- 12:55It to kind of see like, does this really go here?
- 12:58Is it going to really kind of mess up the vibe in some way or
- 13:02another? So I think being able to
- 13:04visualize the rug in your space, or I mean there's a lot of new
- 13:09like visualize it in your space features.
- 13:12Yeah, that, that's really helpful.
- 13:14And then if you do want to go into the store, you could bring
- 13:17maybe a pillow from your sofa or chair, or you know, if it's a
- 13:21rug for a bedroom, maybe you bring your bed covering or you
- 13:25know, something from that room to look at it in the store.
- 13:28Definitely bringing a photo because that's key.
- 13:32It's just, it's hard to just imagine your room and like
- 13:36remember every little detail. And it, it is really helpful to
- 13:40have a photo because maybe there's like a a piece of art
- 13:43that you're not really thinking of that you could kind of, and
- 13:46it's prominent enough that you could pull a color out of and
- 13:49use the rug for that purpose. So yeah, I think that's
- 13:57definitely a good place to start.
- 13:59I want to make sure everybody's on board with some of the the
- 14:05rug speak definitions, rug terminology, so that way things
- 14:11are less confusing. But basically the knot of a rug
- 14:15is basically the basic, you know, the the knot of fabric.
- 14:22Like this rug here? I don't know.
- 14:24Can you see that? Structural unit of the rug is
- 14:28the knot, whether it's a shag carpet or it's, you know, more
- 14:33of a low pile rug. Pile is the surface area of the
- 14:40rug formed by the ends of the knots.
- 14:44Technically, but it's the height for me.
- 14:48Like and somehow. Thinner.
- 14:49Pile like the pile of the rug. Yeah, How thin or thick is the
- 14:53rug? Is the pile?
- 14:56A rug pad is designed to be used under rugs on both hard surfaces
- 15:00and carpets, and it will reduce wear and tear, help absorb
- 15:04impact and make vacuuming easier.
- 15:06So. Do you use a rug grip or a rug
- 15:08pad under your it's? Just like it's too extra for me.
- 15:11But I think it would it would increase the I I'm not debating
- 15:17the value of a rug pad, but I'm lazy and cheap so.
- 15:23You know, I did have a rug pad under one of my rugs once, and
- 15:27then once I got rid of that rug, I never used another rug pad.
- 15:32Maybe I need to revisit that. Maybe they're better nowadays
- 15:35than they used to be. Yeah, I don't know what in the
- 15:38technology could have gotten better, but somehow I'm thinking
- 15:41like if your house got really hot, would a rug pad stick to
- 15:44the floor and get stuck? There, I don't know, I would be
- 15:47afraid of that. Yeah, me too.
- 15:49Hopefully it wouldn't do that. I think it would preserve your
- 15:52hardwood floors better if it didn't stick to them.
- 15:55So maybe that's something for our producer to look up it, you
- 15:59know, does the rug pad leave debris if it's a cheap one or
- 16:06it's old? Well, I know like when I
- 16:08vacuumed that rug and then when I remove the rug and the rug pad
- 16:13was there, it had collected dirt.
- 16:16So you really need to like when you're really vacuuming, just
- 16:19roll up the rug, vacuum underneath, and then vacuum the
- 16:23rug too. Yeah, I mean, it will also help,
- 16:25especially if you have kids, keep the rug in place.
- 16:28Sure, you're not gonna like usually rugs have some little
- 16:31grip underneath, but if they don't, your kid isn't going to
- 16:35go sliding and they hit the rug. All right, we got an answer on
- 16:38the rug pad. Yeah, I don't know.
- 16:40But basically what she said was rug pads can break down in one
- 16:46to three years and quicker if they are cheaper.
- 16:50And they can definitely leave residue and ruin your floor.
- 16:55So if they're cheap, particularly so you don't want
- 16:58to get the cheap rug pad. The quality really matters and
- 17:02you should be replacing it, otherwise you can end up with a
- 17:06mess on your floor to have to refurbish so.
- 17:11Not good. Not for wood floor, yeah.
- 17:13Yeah. Especially yeah.
- 17:15Yeah, yeah. So maybe if you have kids, look
- 17:18for a rug with a built in backing that's of quality, it
- 17:22would be my recommendation, but or a quality rug pad and make
- 17:28sure you just switch it out. Nobody wants to slip, but nobody
- 17:32wants to ruin floors. Yeah.
- 17:35And then knot count is a big deal because it's the number of
- 17:41knots per square inch or square decimeter, and it usually, but
- 17:47not always means better quality and higher price.
- 17:51If it's a higher knot count, it's a higher price.
- 17:54Tracking is like what? The imprints of your feet that
- 17:59are left behind so but it it's not permanent, it's just.
- 18:05Yeah, it's just. Some rugs there's tracking so.
- 18:08I was going to tell you when you're talking about not count
- 18:13some of the higher end rugs that have the higher knot count, if
- 18:17you flip them over, they are just as beautiful on the
- 18:21backside as they are in the front side.
- 18:23I love looking at really nice rugs for that reason.
- 18:27So cool. But also you could even design A
- 18:31room with it, you know, on the opposite side.
- 18:34You could put that on the opposite side and then sometimes
- 18:37put it on the other side. That's a little trick that
- 18:39designers do from time to time. That is really interesting.
- 18:44You have an example of a high end rug, don't you?
- 18:48Let's show. Let's show it.
- 18:52This rug here, it's a pretty great rug.
- 18:57It's not as high of a knot count as what we were talking about,
- 19:01but it is it is pretty nice and it shows.
- 19:04This is the backside of the rug. Very beautiful on the side.
- 19:07And then if you flip it over to the side, yeah.
- 19:13Yeah, can you all see? That I mean, it's so beautiful,
- 19:17both sides, both sides like. Just as beautiful, to be honest,
- 19:21it's just one is a little bit lighter and more of like a not a
- 19:27jute, but it it looks like a rougher material, which is it's
- 19:32nice. It's really beautiful.
- 19:35It's, you know, do you want the soft?
- 19:36Side of the of the rug or the rougher side of the rug.
- 19:39And I think, you know, you could go either way.
- 19:40Change it up. Yeah, you could change it up
- 19:44because you can really see the the rougher side.
- 19:47So that's kind of nice. So yeah, I kind of want to, now
- 19:52that we've gotten some just basics out of the way, I really
- 19:57wanted to get an expert's opinion.
- 20:01And I know you are an expert, but I talked to her rug buyer
- 20:05just so we could get her take on like what to consider when
- 20:12you're buying a rug and what to look for because I have no idea
- 20:15on anything. And like, what does she have to?
- 20:18Say so? I asked.
- 20:19Her What are the elements of a quality rug and how do you tell
- 20:24if a rug is good quality when you're shopping?
- 20:26I know we already talked about the knot count, but that's not
- 20:29all that matters. Like she said to look into
- 20:32whether it's natural and or synthetic and material and the
- 20:36way the fibers have been dyed as well as the knot density.
- 20:42Some of the more inexpensive rugs are very thin and you can
- 20:46feel the backing even when you know you're just walking on
- 20:53them. So that's something that's
- 20:56quality of a low quality rug. And higher quality rugs produce
- 21:00more fibers per square inch, which gives them a more plush
- 21:06feel under foot. So it's going to be plushier
- 21:09even in low pile rugs. So, and when she mentioned how
- 21:14rugs are dyed, a solution dyed is often praised as the ultimate
- 21:19performance and it's extremely resistant to fading and
- 21:24staining. So solution dyed high or not
- 21:28count or point count it's also called.
- 21:33And then you know, natural fibers like wool, jute, cotton
- 21:40and bamboo are really good quality.
- 21:45Silk would probably be like creme de la creme.
- 21:48Like that is where your expensive rugs come in.
- 21:51Have you ever? Seen a silk rug in person, they
- 21:54are amazing. It will the artisan.
- 21:58Quality is just crazy. It's beautiful and it feels.
- 22:01So soft, yeah. And the hand woven rugs are
- 22:04obviously going to be like really high end because they
- 22:09are, you know, just the time that it takes and the labor
- 22:14obviously. So hand woven high material or
- 22:17high quality material like silk rugs are going to be really a a
- 22:21lot more expensive. They can get up there for sure.
- 22:24Yeah, a hand knotted. Rug can be you've all sorts of
- 22:29price points. You'd be a surprise and an
- 22:31antique rug that's a hand knot could be worth a fortune.
- 22:36Just depends on on the rug. Yeah.
- 22:40Haley, what is the most expensive rug in the world?
- 22:43I'm curious now, Like what? What are we talking about when
- 22:47we're talking about, like, really rugs?
- 22:50It's just entertaining. Not that I'm going to buy one,
- 22:53but antique Persian rugs sold at Sotheby's auction in 2013.
- 22:59Yeah, 33.7 million. Dollars 30. $3.7 million what
- 23:05size was? It.
- 23:08It doesn't say, but does it show a picture?
- 23:11It's insane. OK, OK, OK.
- 23:22The previous one before that was 9.6 million, but I've seen
- 23:26that's a lot of money it. Is I've seen rugs.
- 23:28In showrooms that are like 20 or $30,000 and thought like.
- 23:32$100,000 and you know what I mean?
- 23:35People buy them. Yeah.
- 23:36Oh yeah. Heirloom rugs.
- 23:37You can pass them down. It's like a piece of art.
- 23:40You know it. It's an heirloom.
- 23:42It really is a piece of art. Yeah, yeah.
- 23:45And I would suggest. Let me just say buying a hand
- 23:50knot antique rug, you could go into a resale shop.
- 23:56You never know what you might find there.
- 23:58You could find an antique very valuable rug and in a resale
- 24:03shop or or in like a. Thrift store at a thrift store.
- 24:07Sometimes you really find some. Treasures there.
- 24:09That's right. So.
- 24:11So don't be afraid. To, like, buy a used drug, yeah.
- 24:14Yeah, yeah. So, yeah.
- 24:19So she was saying as far as like high high quality wool tends to
- 24:23be the more expensive being a natural fiber and it's great,
- 24:28has great stain resistant properties and clean ability.
- 24:32Did she say anything? About like the type of wool,
- 24:35like a New Zealand wool or anything like that, she didn't
- 24:38mention. Which type of wool?
- 24:40But maybe that's another good Haley question.
- 24:44Which type of wool is the most high end or the best considered
- 24:52the best and then hand woven? Yeah, like I said, is going to
- 24:57be more expensive because the knowledge is going time.
- 25:02Persian wool using Persian carpets is like the highest and
- 25:09but I mean, there's a lot of great wools out there.
- 25:14So, you know, maybe it's about the company that the, you know,
- 25:20that's selling the rug. And usually if you find a really
- 25:24good company, they'll talk about their wool quality and where
- 25:27it's from, I would think. I wonder if the sheep.
- 25:30Are just as expensive, probably. Yeah, I mean, think of all the
- 25:34things that the sheep can do. It's just, you know, they have
- 25:40the wool, you can make cheese, can they?
- 25:47Really make cheddar. I mean he.
- 25:49Don't make cheese. He don't make cheese if you have
- 25:52a sheep if you're so inclined. So anyway, we digress.
- 25:59But yeah, so I said, or I asked Diane also, what are some of the
- 26:05things to stay away from when buying an area rug?
- 26:08And she said choosing a rug that is too high maintenance for the
- 26:12room that it's in would be bad. So it's kind of like user,
- 26:16what's your tolerance? Yeah, it like.
- 26:18For high maintenance for. Example if.
- 26:20You're looking to add a rug in a dining room.
- 26:22Don't choose use a shag rug or something that has a really high
- 26:26pile that's really thick because breakfast crumbs are going to
- 26:30get trapped in there and it's going to be really hard to
- 26:33clean. Nobody.
- 26:35I don't even know if they make rug Rakes.
- 26:41Yeah, you don't know what the efficient way to clean like a a
- 26:46shag rug would be, but it sounds like it would be really high
- 26:49maintenance and I think they used.
- 26:51Like when they had shag carpet way back when.
- 26:54I think there were Rakes that they, well, there's vacuum.
- 26:57Settings particularly for really high pile shag carpets because
- 27:04it really the suction has to be higher and if you don't set it
- 27:08to the right things are going to get.
- 27:11Things are going to grow in there, I just remember.
- 27:13Us having like a longer pile rug and there the vacuum started to
- 27:19smell really bad like it was like breaking down because it
- 27:22just couldn't handle the motor couldn't handle what I was
- 27:25trying to get it to do, which was just vacuum the rug.
- 27:28And so you really to take those things into consideration also
- 27:34like you know don't have a really high long fiber rug if
- 27:40you have motion furniture that is going to sit on top of it
- 27:44because it can get caught and some of those mechanisms, OK.
- 27:48I don't know. Why that makes me laugh so much,
- 27:51but it just really does. Couldn't open up the.
- 27:53Recliner. Yeah, you could.
- 27:55Really. On the rug?
- 27:56Yeah, you can. Break the motor or even will
- 27:59since will will shed a little that can debris can get into the
- 28:06motor and just really junk it up.
- 28:09So a polyester like a performance polyester or
- 28:14propylene rug is a great option for a dining room because of the
- 28:18clean ability for just hose balls and.
- 28:21Messes. Yeah, but see I have.
- 28:24A Let me tell you, I am not afraid of wool, though, OK,
- 28:29Because it does. Shed it does.
- 28:31But it's, it's a natural resistant fabric of dirt and
- 28:36debris and things like that. So I mean, I, I wouldn't shy
- 28:40away from a wool rug personally. I have a wool.
- 28:43Rug and it's not like shedding crazily all the time, you know,
- 28:50just Tufts of wool everywhere. It's more like, yeah, you want
- 28:55to vacuum it and you might get some debris when you vacuum it,
- 28:59but or like with the carpet cleaner, if you clean it with
- 29:03the carpet cleaner, you're going to get some debris.
- 29:05But it's not like, you know, the rug is shedding all over the
- 29:09house and it becomes a huge mess or anything like that.
- 29:14But yeah, wool is great because it's I love a good.
- 29:17Wool rug. It just it.
- 29:19It keeps it stays clean, Yeah. And then just again, other than
- 29:26the wool or jute or cotton or bamboo, synthetic fibers are can
- 29:30also be really good for rugs like nylon, polyester,
- 29:34propylene, acrylic and viscose. Yeah, so, well, viscose.
- 29:41Too can look like a silk rug. Yeah, if you have a viscose rug,
- 29:45and a lot of times they'll mix like this one in the front.
- 29:48I think there's some viscose in that.
- 29:50OK mixing it with a different fiber so it gives a really neat
- 29:55Sheen to the rug. Will you hold that?
- 29:57Up. Sure, let.
- 29:59Me try to get this because I think this has a little bit of
- 30:07viscose here yeah and you. Can kind of see, like the
- 30:11outlines of the florals are viscose and so it's shiny.
- 30:15Yeah, it's really. Pretty It's got a Sheen.
- 30:18That stands out. That is pretty.
- 30:20I'd put this in my. House.
- 30:21Yeah, it's nice and light. Yeah, it's got.
- 30:23Some color but not too much. Just going to throw that.
- 30:26Down on the floor. And then I asked if you could
- 30:33get an affordable, good quality rug.
- 30:35Sure. Yeah.
- 30:36And the buyer also agreed. She said machine made rugs are
- 30:40produced with synthetic materials and are the most
- 30:43affordable option because they're mass produced more
- 30:46quickly. But they're of course can still
- 30:49be great quality. And there's just such an array
- 30:54of different types of fibers and construction types available you
- 30:58can sift through, so there's really something of quality to
- 31:01meet any budget. Absolutely.
- 31:03So much more than what we used to have, yeah.
- 31:06And. Sizes and shapes.
- 31:09I mean, the rug industry is amazing right now.
- 31:13Yeah, yeah. Like maybe you do.
- 31:15Want a little bit of higher quality material, but you don't
- 31:19want to spend a fortune, so maybe you opt for a smaller rug
- 31:23and that can still definitely fit well within your room.
- 31:26Yeah, and we'll show you how. Yeah.
- 31:30And. You could even layer like.
- 31:32If you want the smaller rug, but you need a larger rug, you could
- 31:35layer the two like a large rug and a small.
- 31:39Yeah, yeah. That's true.
- 31:40To make it bigger, like maybe the top 1 is really high quality
- 31:44and the lower one's machine made or something.
- 31:48Or maybe the top 1's? Like a hand knot.
- 31:50Yeah. And then you have it on top of a
- 31:51machine made. Why not?
- 31:53I mean, I've seen high, low. What you you can do that.
- 31:56It looks great. That is so.
- 31:58True, and that's a good way to extend your budget that way, but
- 32:02it really does ground the space and make a huge difference in
- 32:04the room. So I think it's definitely a
- 32:07worth it place to yeah to spend money 'cause you'll you'll keep
- 32:11it for a while if it, especially if it's of quality, it'll last a
- 32:14lot longer and you can move it. Throughout your home too.
- 32:18That's so true. Like.
- 32:19Even if you rent, like maybe in a dining room, you have a rug
- 32:25that when you move to your next house, you put it in the living
- 32:27room or you know, it'll work in different rooms potentially.
- 32:30So it could really have longevity there.
- 32:33And then it has a story. So I guess on that topic,
- 32:36because, you know, you might keep a rug for a long time and
- 32:41it goes from room to room. Are washable rugs worth it?
- 32:45Yeah, you know what I love? A washable rug in a dining room.
- 32:50I love it in a kids room or kids playroom in a kitchen.
- 32:54Like if you do a runner in front of the sink between, you know,
- 32:57your sink in the island or stove, whichever and in an
- 33:01entrance way. And now they're inexpensive.
- 33:05So you could literally have a few of them that you change out
- 33:09per season. Cool.
- 33:11Yeah, they're not that expensive, especially the ones
- 33:13on our website. Yeah, are not expensive at all.
- 33:16Wow. Yeah, okay.
- 33:17There's other higher price point washable rugs, but you know ours
- 33:22are they don't have to be. No.
- 33:24Well, do we have an example of one?
- 33:26We do where? Is my.
- 33:28I remember seeing one. And it was so soft.
- 33:32I think it's over there. It's that the one closest to
- 33:35you, Haley. Yeah.
- 33:38And this is just triangles that we have.
- 33:40And these colors are so great to work with, too.
- 33:43That's on this particular rug, yeah, but from.
- 33:45Afar, it just, it looks really like a nice pattern.
- 33:52Yeah. And it's extremely soft when you
- 33:54touch it. It is.
- 33:57And the the back of this, Yeah, this is a great rug.
- 34:01Yeah. What does the back?
- 34:02Look like if it's washable the back it's kind.
- 34:05Of like a rubbery back overly. It's not like coated in rubber,
- 34:10it's you can still see the weave.
- 34:12You can see the. Weave, but it definitely has
- 34:14some grip to it. Yeah, yeah.
- 34:16But this is. Great.
- 34:17I mean, these are awesome for entrance ways.
- 34:20Yep. Yeah, change.
- 34:21Change with the season, right? Cool.
- 34:24Yeah. And I guess also, aside from
- 34:29having to throw it in the washing machine, spills will
- 34:32actually beat up and can be wiped right off.
- 34:36So that's kind of nice. I'm big on throwing.
- 34:38Them on the driveway and just washing them, yeah, yeah, well,
- 34:41let's look at. Some layouts just on the
- 34:45driveway and wash. Just why not?
- 34:48Hose it down, yeah. Yeah, well, I I want to hear
- 34:52more about that little what you just shared.
- 34:57But we should talk about. Yeah.
- 35:00How do you place a rug in a living room, for example?
- 35:05Like, what are things you should consider?
- 35:07Where should you put it? If you have a sofa and a coffee
- 35:09table, let's say chairs, you know I don't.
- 35:12Have any issue with like the back legs of the chair being off
- 35:16the rug? That doesn't bother me.
- 35:19It is nice when you have, if you have the space to do an
- 35:23oversized rug and then your sofa or sectional sits upon the rug
- 35:28so it goes underneath your legs of the front of the sofa.
- 35:32That looks really nice. I know you have this round rug
- 35:35up here and some people are like, really?
- 35:38Huh. I think it's fun.
- 35:40Yeah, I think it is. Fun.
- 35:41I think a round rug is. Great in a living room.
- 35:43I also like it in a kids room. Yeah, yeah.
- 35:46In. Circle time it's it's.
- 35:48That curve Curvy, yeah. Adds to the curvy.
- 35:51Aesthetic that's so in right now so I mean yeah, I guess you're
- 35:56right. You definitely could have a big
- 36:008 by 10 rug that all of the furniture sits on top of.
- 36:05Or even bigger. Yeah, or even bigger yeah, like
- 36:08in. This space here there next to
- 36:12the sectional, like all the way down, you see like a rectangle
- 36:16that was I think like a sidebar or something.
- 36:20But there's a set of stairs that go up right there.
- 36:22So you're basically walking down a little bit of wood floor and
- 36:25then a large area rug. And you could make that rug
- 36:29smaller, but I liked that size in that space.
- 36:33OK, so. These are diagrams from your
- 36:35design. Yeah, that you've done in real
- 36:39spaces. It looks like someone.
- 36:41Colored them, they look really pretty.
- 36:44I took your CAD drawings and I you made them pretty.
- 36:48Yeah, they're very artistic. I love them.
- 36:51They look at my God. Yeah.
- 36:53But yeah, I think that the commonality, whether you have a
- 36:59circular or a rectangular rug is that if you do have a smaller
- 37:06rug, you know, it'll be fine to have a smaller area rug in a
- 37:14smaller space because just the front legs of everything can
- 37:17just be touching the rug, right, Essentially.
- 37:20Or a lot like the main piece pieces like the chairs, let's
- 37:24say. Yeah, I mean it's.
- 37:26Nice to have the sofa on the rug, but if you, you know, if
- 37:30you can't have a extra large rug and the sofa completely sit on
- 37:35it, it's OK to have it halfway on.
- 37:38I think that's fine. Just have the front legs on.
- 37:40Yeah, yeah. Let's see what else.
- 37:43What else is out there as far as did you watercolor these?
- 37:47I did. Oh my goodness.
- 37:49We need to frame them and put. Them up just like as diagrams
- 37:55down the hall the biggest. Thing.
- 37:57I think a lot of people in their living room just put the a small
- 38:02rug under the coffee table, and rugs are really meant to bring
- 38:05the room together. So the goal is to either have
- 38:08all the main pieces of furniture squarely on top of the rug, or
- 38:12at least the feet are touching the rug.
- 38:15Not every piece of furniture in Yeah yeah on a yes.
- 38:20Corner of the rug and. If you're watching, there's some
- 38:22diagrams to help. If you don't have time now,
- 38:24there'll be a supporting blog that you can reference, so not
- 38:29a. Postage stamp, not a postage
- 38:32table. Stamp under a coffee table.
- 38:34Bring that room together exactly.
- 38:37Yeah. So let's look at some examples
- 38:40of how you would apply the same idea with dining room.
- 38:44So whether it's a round rug or a square rug, I wanted to include
- 38:49both shapes because if you have a round dining table, you could,
- 38:53yeah, you know, do a round rug. Or you could do a could you do a
- 38:58square rug if you have a round dining table?
- 39:00Possibly. Yeah.
- 39:02If it's all right. If it's.
- 39:03Big enough and it depends on the size of your table to the rug,
- 39:06right? One thing for dining that is key
- 39:10is to make sure legs on the chairs or the bench are on the
- 39:16rug even when you move them away from the table.
- 39:21So when you're sitting at the table, you don't want the back
- 39:24legs to be off of the rug. So you need to have a big enough
- 39:27rug that everything's on the rug when you pull the chair away.
- 39:30OK, Yeah. And that's pretty.
- 39:33Pretty easy to follow, sure. So whether you have a dining
- 39:35bench like in the example on the right or you have just all
- 39:40chairs, you want to make sure that when it's pulled back, it's
- 39:44still on the rug. So I think dining sounds like
- 39:47it's a really good place for a bigger rug.
- 39:49If you're going to invest like what room to invest in the
- 39:53bigger rug, I think dining would be the answer.
- 39:57And here it looks like on the right hand side, you don't have
- 40:03the servers on the rug. So the in this.
- 40:06Particular room, those are large cabinets.
- 40:11And in between the cabinets is this beautiful piece of art that
- 40:15we spec for that space. Nice.
- 40:17Yeah. OK.
- 40:19And so. Those can sit.
- 40:20Off of the rug? I think so, but I've also seen.
- 40:23You. Put part of the rug underneath
- 40:26those cabinets if you need more walk room space or exactly
- 40:33clearance. It depends on the room like.
- 40:35In that situation you just spoke of, it moved you right into the
- 40:40kitchen, so you needed that walk space.
- 40:43You know, this could be an enclosed room, right?
- 40:45So it just depends on your space.
- 40:47Yeah. So you could.
- 40:48Either have, you know, the rug touching every piece of
- 40:52furniture in a dining room, theoretically, or, you know,
- 40:56just be under the main dining piece.
- 40:58Yeah, as long as when you pull the.
- 41:01Chair away or the bench away, it's still on the rug.
- 41:03That's all that matters. What about?
- 41:05Bedrooms. I feel like bedrooms are
- 41:08difficult because they're set up in so many different ways.
- 41:12Yeah. So OK, I'm glad you drew them.
- 41:15Or you put it this way, you could do a wall to wall size rug
- 41:21and a bedroom if it works out that way, like the one on the
- 41:24right there. Or you could do a smaller
- 41:27version and just bring it up closer to the night stands.
- 41:31Or if it's even bigger, you could have the front of the legs
- 41:35of the night stand on the rug. Now, I tend to like it further
- 41:38down, so kind of maybe halfway in in the example on the left,
- 41:43like halfway down to and you know where the bed is, right?
- 41:47And both of those are pretty. Like 8 by 11 potentially sized
- 41:51rugs depending on the size. The one that's wall to wall
- 41:55would be bigger, yeah. Yeah, a lot bigger than that.
- 41:59What is crazy? I don't know if you have a slide
- 42:02of This is when the rug goes the same direction as the bed, which
- 42:08makes me crazy. OK, so you don't want.
- 42:11The bed and the rug to be parallel, like just same
- 42:14direction. Yeah, no.
- 42:16Please don't do that. So put the rug horizontal.
- 42:19In your bed vertical like AT? Exactly?
- 42:22Yeah, OK. That's.
- 42:24That's me. That's my.
- 42:25Own personal thing, but yeah, well, I included more rug.
- 42:30Examples for the bedroom, because it is just a difficult
- 42:37space to figure out with all the furniture.
- 42:40So let's go to the next slide because I think that is really
- 42:44telling. Like in a kids bedroom, for
- 42:47example. Like if you have two twins,
- 42:50yeah. I would just put them like the
- 42:52picture shows here. This was an interesting space
- 42:56because it was like the entrance, like the bottom floor
- 42:59entrance that was turned into a kids space, a bedroom and that
- 43:04that long on the right that's actually a rug, an insurance rug
- 43:09and that's a small wall that divides.
- 43:12The kids bedroom. To the entrance.
- 43:14So, yeah, so we're trying to define that space a little bit
- 43:18more. So we did an oversized rug in
- 43:20the kids area. Yeah, cool.
- 43:25It's what we did there well. What about?
- 43:29Yeah, an office, OK. Oh, I see what you're saying.
- 43:34Yeah. So this one, we had a smaller
- 43:39rug that we like the color in. And so we took just like a solid
- 43:44rug and then layered this. I'm sorry, solid rug that was
- 43:50larger that we then layered the smaller rug on top of and it
- 43:55turned out really well. It added it added quite
- 43:58dimension, a lot of dimension to that space so you can layer
- 44:01rugs. Absolutely awesome.
- 44:04And. In this instance, you just like
- 44:09because there it looks like there's an office with a desk
- 44:12area and a seating area and you would prioritize the rug under
- 44:16the seating area. If there's both, I mean, you
- 44:19could put it under. The desk.
- 44:21But the way this room was laid out, there was other doors and
- 44:25other hallways to the space, so it didn't make sense to put one
- 44:29where that desk is, right? Right.
- 44:33If that were an actual. Wall back there then.
- 44:34Sure, right? You could put a rug under a
- 44:37desk. If you want, absolutely, yeah.
- 44:39Yeah, yeah. So production's telling me you
- 44:43have a surprise for me? Oh yeah, so.
- 44:46Since we're talking about rugs, a friend of mine gave me these
- 44:50and I just think they are the cutest things and this is really
- 44:55a surprise. What?
- 44:56Oh my gosh, they're cute. Cup holders, well, they're OK,
- 45:01so they come in different. Patterns.
- 45:03Look at this look. How cute can you see that?
- 45:06Nice. Persian rugs, Yeah, with the
- 45:09tassels. So yeah, Anyway, they're little.
- 45:12Coasters so you and your, you know, all of your different cute
- 45:18little cups there that you use needs its own little cute
- 45:22coaster, you know, little rug or you can use it as a mouse pad.
- 45:27So that's so true. Anyway, so you can pick.
- 45:31One and then I'll put one on my side too, aren't they?
- 45:35Cute. It's kind.
- 45:37Of like I want to shrink myself and walk across one of these
- 45:39rugs. That is what it looks like.
- 45:43I just layered the rug under my teacup plate and I just layered
- 45:50mine. Look how.
- 45:51Sweet. Well, I you know I never want to
- 45:54stain. Nice surfaces, but so when you
- 45:57are layering rugs though, like you wanted, how do you do that?
- 46:03Like when you're choosing patterns, is there any rule that
- 46:07you should be? I mean you can mix patterns.
- 46:11But I typically like to do maybe a solid, you know, as the
- 46:15foundation, the larger rug and then maybe the pattern on the
- 46:18top. That's just me though.
- 46:19You could do vice versa. Also, if you have like a jute, a
- 46:25natural fiber rug, like a seagrass or something like that,
- 46:30have a jute. Oh yeah, this.
- 46:32One here this is a jute. This has a nice little.
- 46:36Texture now this. Has quite a bit of pattern for
- 46:38this jute. I love this rug.
- 46:41But anyway, maybe a solid jute and then you could put say a
- 46:47focal hide over top of that and it just creates dimension and it
- 46:51creates an interest in the room. And do you always want to put
- 46:54the? Rug that's on top layered at an
- 46:57angle or can you do square? I mean, you could you could
- 47:02square. It all up I, I tend to like a
- 47:04little bit of flare, a little angle on it.
- 47:07So I typically put it at an angle.
- 47:10I feel like that is a little bit.
- 47:12More advanced, but it's really cool to know that you can do
- 47:16that. Especially I really like the
- 47:17idea of saving money by choosing like maybe a more inexpensive
- 47:22larger rug and then the really nice rug on top is nicer.
- 47:28Well, let's say a smaller I'll. Give an example of just for
- 47:32utilitarian purposes. So say you have a jute or
- 47:36seagrass rug and you spill something all over it and you
- 47:38can't clean it, but you're like, I love that rug.
- 47:41I don't want to get rid of it. You can layer another smaller
- 47:44rug over top of it. So just cover up the mess.
- 47:47That is such a good idea. Hopefully it's.
- 47:49More in the center, but. I love that just.
- 47:54A thought that is so. Crafty Every.
- 47:56Situation is different, yeah. Yeah.
- 47:59So you mentioned a couple times that you hose off your rug in
- 48:06your driveway, and I just want to know like, is that how you're
- 48:10supposed to clean a rug or how that's how I clean it?
- 48:14You're not going. To send it off to be cleaned.
- 48:17Somebody else can do that, but wow.
- 48:19I called to get a price on cleaning this Ushak rug that I
- 48:23had and no way. So I just took it out to my
- 48:26driveway and put some, I think it was like Ecos or you know,
- 48:32some sort of cleaner, like fabric cleaner, laundry
- 48:37detergent, sorry, a real mild 1. And I put it on there.
- 48:41I scrubbed it down. I used to broom, I hosed it, got
- 48:45all the soap out and I didn't have anything to like scrape all
- 48:49the excess water and everything off.
- 48:51So you guys are going to think I'm nuts.
- 48:53I used a shovel because it had a, you know, a hard edge on it.
- 48:57And so I literally scraped it. I asked my neighbors, I was
- 49:00like, did you ever see me doing that?
- 49:02And they're, they said they did, so funny.
- 49:06I'm sorry. Neighbors, thank you for putting
- 49:09up with me. Do you have any?
- 49:11Photos of you doing that? I don't think so.
- 49:14Maybe Google Earth? Has some I you know I don't oh,
- 49:18Oh my gosh it. Looks like our producer.
- 49:23I don't think that's. Me, it's not a.
- 49:26Shovel. Like that?
- 49:28This is like a snow shovel. Where did you get that photo?
- 49:37Oh, goodness gracious. That is hell yeah, but it was.
- 49:41Kind of like that. Just a different type of shovel.
- 49:43Yeah, Yeah. OK, I had.
- 49:46Eaten a lot of spinach, so I was.
- 49:48You know, super muscular there, right?
- 49:50Yeah, Well, I. Mean I'm just picturing you and
- 49:52I think like hard labor, like I don't think it was very
- 49:57difficult. As far as like, yeah, sure.
- 50:00It was like a workout is like that.
- 50:02That's basically what it is. Just, you know.
- 50:06A shovel for. Snow.
- 50:08Yeah. OK, a snow shovel.
- 50:10Which makes it worse. Cannot shovel.
- 50:13Yeah, you're not like. Scoop.
- 50:15Well, you know how snow shovel they're usually?
- 50:17Pretty wide and they have that sharp edge.
- 50:19It's not sharp. It's I guess sort of sharp.
- 50:21But yeah, you know, it just pushed and scraped the water out
- 50:25and it worked and then I just laid it.
- 50:28A lot of people like to put it on a trampoline.
- 50:29If I have a trampoline, because of the airflow, me, I think I
- 50:33just put some tables out there and laid it on it and it dried.
- 50:37It took about a week. Well, you know, I feel like
- 50:39that's how people. Traditionally, yeah.
- 50:42Clean rocks and. You know the.
- 50:45Sun is disinfecting. It's a great way to dry things.
- 50:48So hey, you know, I probably wouldn't do that with like a
- 50:51really high end. I mean when you're talking
- 50:55about. Sotheby's or Christie's auction
- 50:57House of $33 million? Maybe you might be calling the?
- 51:01Professionals on that, Yeah. You pay the price, yeah, for the
- 51:04rug. Cleaning.
- 51:06But yeah, I didn't lose any color out of the rug, I mean.
- 51:09It was old. It's an old rug.
- 51:11I found it at like a junk store and I was like, I am buying that
- 51:15rug, but it was, it had a smell to it.
- 51:18So I'm like I am washing those rugs.
- 51:20So I did and it was fine. It's beautiful now.
- 51:22Yeah, yeah. Wow.
- 51:26Well, yeah, when I heard that you were, when you were cleaning
- 51:35your driveway, cleaning your rug in your driveway with a hose, I
- 51:40just needed to get a visual of that.
- 51:43And so we prompted AI because it's gotten pretty advanced.
- 51:48And at first it gave just like a jolly lady.
- 51:52Like did you have that picture? Water off her rug.
- 51:57No, I didn't include I I mean, somewhere, maybe we'll include
- 52:01it later. But then I I prompted it and I
- 52:06said more hard labor. Look, so to them, that's what,
- 52:12that's what they called it, hard labor.
- 52:15I love it. Yeah, it's great.
- 52:19Oh my goodness. Just the facial expression.
- 52:23Is I I think my hair was actually.
- 52:25Pulled back like that, I think it was hot out.
- 52:29Yeah, definitely. A lot of yeah, yeah, you know.
- 52:34There's many ways it sounds like to maintain and clean.
- 52:39There's also spot cleaning as an option.
- 52:42You can do that. But yeah, for those larger.
- 52:45Rugs I've taken, like I mentioned, just like a, you
- 52:50know, a carpet cleaner that looks like a vacuum and cleaned
- 52:53it that way. I also, yeah, have hosed off a
- 52:59rug because of, you know, pet issues potentially.
- 53:05I think the best thing to do. Like if you had to do.
- 53:11Like if if you have a. You know, a pet goes on your
- 53:14rug, you should really just try to get it up as quick as
- 53:18possible and just blot it with a paper towel.
- 53:21And then a little bit of, you know, very, you know, dish soap
- 53:27or just some sort of not a harsh chemical on it.
- 53:31Yeah. And just pad it.
- 53:33You don't want to swirl. You don't want to like move that
- 53:35around. Yeah.
- 53:36You know, if you're just spot cleaning it because then you'll
- 53:38see those patterns. Eventually it'll pop back up but
- 53:41still just spot clean and tap. Yeah, the situation I was in.
- 53:45It was just it needed a hose. You needed a hose, but, and, so
- 53:49and. Then I sucked the.
- 53:50Water out with the Bissell, you know, carpet cleaner, so that
- 53:55that works. Sometimes you just got to do
- 53:57what you got to do. And it wasn't like the highest
- 53:59end rug ever. But yeah, on that note, it's
- 54:03been really interesting to talk about rugs and how to to shop
- 54:11for them and where to put them in your house and what to do if
- 54:14they get messy and how to layer them.
- 54:18So it's been, well, it's been entertaining, yeah.
- 54:21Hopefully we've given some good information that people can use
- 54:26how to. Simulate your weekend chores
- 54:29using AI. How to AI clean your rugs.
- 54:34But yeah, it's been, it's been fun to hang out.
