- 0:05Welcome back to the Payment Shed Podcast live from MPE Berlin
- 0:082026. I am joined this afternoon by
- 0:11Robert Funick, CEO of Unser. Robert, welcome to the Payment
- 0:15Shed Podcast. Thanks for joining us today.
- 0:18Thanks for joining us. Can you tell us a little bit
- 0:20more about Unser and your position within the the payments
- 0:23ecosystem? Sure.
- 0:24Happy to. So ecosystem is exactly the word
- 0:27that we provide. So my name is Robert, I'm the
- 0:30CEO of the Windsor Group. And what we really do is we
- 0:33provide our merges with the full ecosystems, allowing them to
- 0:36sell whatever they want to sell on digitized commerce, being
- 0:39offline, being online, being Moto, being integrated offerings
- 0:44between the two. And that's what we do mostly in
- 0:47Doctor Nordics for about 90,000 merchants.
- 0:49Oh wow. Mostly in the small medium.
- 0:53And we want to talk to you today about reconciliation, you know,
- 0:57particularly in that SMB ecosystem.
- 0:59And one of the big things that comes up is the Recon data that
- 1:03we see across point of sale and online.
- 1:05And is there still a real intersection breakage there that
- 1:09we need to fix or are we starting to close that gap in
- 1:12the market? There are some players that
- 1:15really have the full offering, but if you break down,
- 1:17especially in the bread and bottom small to medium
- 1:20merchants, it's still extremely fragmented.
- 1:22They'll have different providers for the terminal, for the
- 1:25software, for their payments, for online, if they have it all
- 1:30separated out, all different info funds, different contracts,
- 1:34different integrations, different everything that
- 1:36there's huge complexity and lot of inefficiencies for this
- 1:39business. And you hearing from your SMB
- 1:41network that they need that to change, they want that to change
- 1:44and they want to have the data in one location.
- 1:46Yes, of course. I mean, merchants want to sell
- 1:48their goods, they want to do what they're good at.
- 1:50They want to do size of commerce.
- 1:51They want to basically spend their time over better to them
- 1:56and having to deal with multiple providers, multiple flows,
- 1:59multiple participations, multiple contracts, contact
- 2:03persons, service, everything that's just very complex, right?
- 2:06And it's very distracting and they, you know, they just need a
- 2:09problem solved. And some of the operational
- 2:11issues that can come from that, I don't know, I'm just
- 2:14brainstorming here, but things like ERP connectivity as well,
- 2:16does that, does that come in your world in your retail SMB
- 2:19book? For sure.
- 2:23I mean it depends on the size of the merchant, how complex their
- 2:25needs are in terms of software. But the more providers you need
- 2:29to use to solve the problems that you need to run your
- 2:32business right, that the more complexity you have and the more
- 2:35inefficient it becomes. So that's that's definitely the
- 2:38case. And treasury services is
- 2:40something that we're starting to see on a more regular basis in
- 2:43the payments market now as a as a solution and product that
- 2:45that's offered. Do you think we're doing enough
- 2:48to upsell and educate on the benefits of treasury services
- 2:51for SMBs in the market? I think that there's still a lot
- 2:54of, lot of free space there to innovate, to disrupt to, to
- 2:58bring new products to market. Because back to what we
- 3:00discussed before, right as a merchant, you want to sell your
- 3:04books, you don't want to deal with all the complexity and
- 3:07especially small medium retailers, they're very
- 3:10underserved by banks. They they still find it
- 3:13difficult to get credit. They find it difficult to to
- 3:16really have help in in just the small things of spend management
- 3:21etcetera. So that's also where we as
- 3:23interesting, we can innovate a lot and help help our merchants
- 3:26to really close that full ecosystem and also provide tools
- 3:30to to help the merchants run their day-to-day, not just the
- 3:33money in, but also the money out.
- 3:35With 90,000 plus merchants in your ecosystem, how do you build
- 3:40your road map strategy for that many customers?
- 3:43You know, that's a huge pool. Like, does that become a
- 3:45challenge for you guys internally around where you take
- 3:47your road map or do you always build for the the the many
- 3:50rather than the ones? I think, I think not all of our
- 3:54merchants have all of our products.
- 3:55So we're really looking to to cross some upselling, providing
- 4:00more of our services to our merchant base.
- 4:02And of course, you solve for the individual products.
- 4:06But within our road map, we're also working towards a vision,
- 4:09working towards the world where we believe that the future is
- 4:13moving towards right and, and having us being able to solve
- 4:16these these, these issues. So so it goes alongside each
- 4:20other. And we're very much in the
- 4:23Sunshine State. Should we call it of embedded
- 4:26finance at the moment, right? It's, you know, payments likes
- 4:28to work in what I would call buzzword cycles.
- 4:32But I feel with embedded finance, there's a really,
- 4:36really good opportunity. Not just, you know, I think
- 4:38people look at embedded finance, they think merchant cash
- 4:40advance, right? But it's so much more than that.
- 4:42And what we can do with the next stage of embedded finance.
- 4:44And again, like I think a lot of the conversation we have on the
- 4:47podcast has been embedded finance for the enterprise
- 4:50merchant, but the embedded finance proposition for SMBs.
- 4:56I'd love to get your perspective on how you're thinking about
- 4:59embedded finance for your 90,000 customers again.
- 5:03No. So if you look, I think you
- 5:04should really look at the needs of of small to medium retailers
- 5:07and what they have, right. And, and there's a lot of tools
- 5:12that are not just relevant for enterprise that are really
- 5:15irrelevant for, for also small medium retailers.
- 5:17They all do their buying. They all need their stock
- 5:20manage, they all need their, their suppliers paid.
- 5:25You know, they're looking today, they're looking for their
- 5:28inbound payments in one portal. They're looking for their
- 5:30banking in the other portal. They're very inefficient with
- 5:34how they they manage their cash flows and their funds when it
- 5:36comes to paying for suppliers. So, so having all of that,
- 5:41including software for the stock management, all of that in one
- 5:44integrated offering, it makes a. Lot of sense and do you use data
- 5:47to offer different finance products to those merchants?
- 5:52When you say you're consolidating the data across
- 5:54different poles and ecosystem, is that is that something that
- 5:56you guys have looked at? Yes and we do, but I think we're
- 5:59just scratching the surface. I think there's, there's a lot
- 6:02more you can do not as as general cash advance, we get
- 6:05paid earlier or hey, we give you 50K worth of credit.
- 6:10It's much more also around how you trade finance individual
- 6:13payments, how you can maybe get advance payments on on
- 6:18outstanding debits. So all these for the elements.
- 6:20I think there's a lot more that you can do there also for small
- 6:22merchants. And is that accessing liquidity
- 6:25still a big problem in the market?
- 6:29I would say so, yes, especially especially small mergers that
- 6:34don't have a very long track record and not not in business
- 6:36for very long, which is often the case when when merchants
- 6:39need financing. I think that is that is still
- 6:43quite a lot of gap to be fulfilled and how to help
- 6:45merchants grow at the end of. I've seen insurance becoming
- 6:49quite prevalent within e-commerce checkouts as well as
- 6:53an upsell product, you know in a few different sub verticals.
- 6:56So not just having that merchant cash advance kind of liquidity
- 7:00play, but actually the tip box of do you want to insure your
- 7:03purchase? And that's another embedded
- 7:05finance upsell that we see in the market in terms of, you
- 7:10know, not just the chargeback protection, right, to a customer
- 7:14thinking, oh, if something goes wrong here, I've got chargeback
- 7:16protection in the background thinking I want to protect this
- 7:18product at source and it's €2 or 2 lbs more on your transaction.
- 7:22Do you think that that's going to continue to be something we
- 7:24see at any commerce checkout as an upsell product for merchants?
- 7:28I would say so. In certain verticals it makes
- 7:31sense, but you need to be careful not to make it too
- 7:33complex for the customer. The more they need to read, they
- 7:36need to click, they need to go through to to be able to
- 7:40purchase it will have. They also have a negative effect
- 7:43on conversion. You need to be careful how how,
- 7:46how cloggy you make it and how confusing you make.
- 7:48It, I think in the UK we've seen it with train lines, the train
- 7:50booking apps. You buy your train ticket, it's
- 7:52£1.50 extra to ensure your ticket and you start to see it
- 7:55with music events and festivals. And at that purchase, you know
- 7:58it's a high value purchase and you can ensure it's just ticking
- 8:02a box, £1.50 extra on your transaction or €2.00 extra on
- 8:05your transaction and you feel a bit more protection for that
- 8:07higher value purchase. No, there's certain juice case
- 8:10where it makes sense, right? And it's an added value.
- 8:13But you need to be careful like I said to not make it too
- 8:15confusing. And if you do this with too much
- 8:18pop ups and click aways rather than you might increase the pick
- 8:22rate, which will decrease your overall conversion, right?
- 8:25So it's always a balance. So it's a nice segue into my
- 8:27next question around whether you think more PSPS should be
- 8:30offering embedded products. I mean, it's a it's a very
- 8:35healthy and normal add on because the the services are so
- 8:38adjacent to each other. One is really connected to the
- 8:41other. Now there's a question how, how
- 8:43deep you want to go. You can only be good in in so
- 8:46many things, right? You can't be good in everything.
- 8:49We've seen this when banks are trying to go into payments.
- 8:52It has never been successful. Now payments is going into
- 8:55banking and I think you know there always be a place where
- 9:00the adjacent will be can be served for payment companies
- 9:04until you get to a certain stage where you will have pure players
- 9:07that are better than executed. I haven't really thought of
- 9:08that, but you're right, payments companies are kind of flipping
- 9:11on its head at the moment and going into that that banking
- 9:13world, aren't they? So we've actually not talked
- 9:16about AIA huge amount today, which is very surprising on on
- 9:19the podcast because normally we end up at AI at some point.
- 9:22So we are going to ask you about AI and answer and how you guys
- 9:25have started to explore AI adoption to help yourselves as a
- 9:28business and your customer base. Yes, it's definitely the
- 9:32buzzword of today. It is one that is here to stay.
- 9:36But like everybody else in the industry, especially if you talk
- 9:39to them off stage, we are, we are looking testing trial and
- 9:44error to see where, where can have the biggest impact, where,
- 9:49where it really drives efficiency and, and, and allows
- 9:55us to, to spend more time on what's, what's really worth it
- 9:58versus time on Edmund. At the same time, we also see US
- 10:03SSP speeds our role to help our merchants sell wherever they
- 10:07want to sell, right, which which also means selling to an agent.
- 10:11So we spend a lot of time to make sure that we are we are at
- 10:14the at the front of this race in Europe where it's not completely
- 10:20available yet, but how to hack our way around so we can.
- 10:23And they were our merchants to sell through an agent.
- 10:25And I think data is one of the best use cases for it right now
- 10:28and what it can do with data. And you guys must have a huge
- 10:30amount of data with such a large customer base that you can play
- 10:33around with. And you like you say trial and
- 10:35error in the background say, well, we've got this huge data
- 10:38set. Let's see how we can really tap
- 10:40into that and then think about what we then roll out to our
- 10:42customers at a later date. Exactly.
- 10:45But it's also a challenge because the outcome is only as
- 10:47good as the data you feed it and the ability for you to
- 10:50understand it, right? So, but there's a lot we can do
- 10:54with with that. There's a lot we can do with
- 10:55customer service. But I mean, some, just to give
- 11:00you a very simple example that's a good one to give here because
- 11:02there's a lot of sales people walking around is when we do our
- 11:06monthly QBRS, we build a tool in a way that just with one click
- 11:11of the button, the whole deck to present to the merchant is
- 11:15printed out with the help of AI data analytics, the slides,
- 11:20100%, everything is just just ready, which usually took this 8
- 11:25hours of work collecting it all and now it's click of a button.
- 11:28So it's just a very very simple example on how we're already
- 11:32using I. Think more people should be
- 11:33doing that with sales name and I haven't worked in a commercial
- 11:36role merchant facing. I would have loved to be able to
- 11:38click a button and have a beautiful deck put in front of
- 11:41me. Everything there.
- 11:42So we're MPE in Berlin. Why is this such an important
- 11:46event to enter in your calendar every year?
- 11:50Well, it's it's a home event. Our headquarters are in Berlin,
- 11:54so it's it's easy to get to I. Wish ours were today with the
- 11:57flights that have been cancelled.
- 11:59I moved away the previous years I would I would come here by
- 12:02bicycle. But at the same time, it's just
- 12:05one where the whole industry meets people like me that
- 12:09they've been in payments for a couple of decades, right?
- 12:11There's one big reunion of the people you used to work with,
- 12:14used to partner with, used to negotiate with.
- 12:17There are now all different companies.
- 12:19So it's it's it's a great one to to connect with everybody again,
- 12:22but it's also a very good place to just have lots of meetings,
- 12:25which usually would take months to together travelling around
- 12:29and super efficient to just have everybody in one place and get a
- 12:32lot of catch up meetings in. So it's a great event for.
- 12:35That we've had a great day, Day one today.
- 12:36And yeah, there's just a real buzz in the room, isn't it?
- 12:39I feel like, you know, you can feel the collaboration happening
- 12:42around you. So we have a final section on
- 12:44the podcast. It's called the Shelf of Shame,
- 12:46where our guests nominate something from payments and
- 12:48fintech they would happily banish forever, never to see
- 12:51again. Please can you bring us your
- 12:53Shelf of shame? Well, banished forever.
- 12:57It's it's it's also part of what makes payments interesting.
- 12:59But, but you mentioned embedded finance, you mentioned AI,
- 13:04right? If you've been in this business
- 13:07for a few decades, it's just, it seems like we're all like
- 13:10butterflies going from 1 flower to the other.
- 13:12And every year there's the new word, right?
- 13:17Stable coins. We go back to Google glasses, we
- 13:20go back to beacons, right? We're all going to change
- 13:23everything. Our fridges would already be
- 13:26talking to each other. Milk would automatically arrive
- 13:29because it would scan the inside with the Internet of Things and
- 13:32all these things that keep on keep on being the buzzwords.
- 13:36But at the end, some of it sticks, but not all.
- 13:39And sometimes I miss just to be a little bit more looking at the
- 13:43bigger picture. And and people also understand
- 13:47that at the end, adoption is driven by the consumers changing
- 13:51behaviour and that is that's much tougher to do and sometimes
- 13:54underestimated. So we're shelving buzzword high
- 13:57pin payments. Yes, yes, and.
- 14:00I'm more than happy to put that on the shelf.
- 14:01For shame. And sometimes people that go on
- 14:03stage, we do secret bingo cards to say, OK, like you you're
- 14:07trying and and drop in AI based blockchain.
- 14:11Agentic Commerce. Agentic commerce well.
- 14:14Brilliant. Thanks very much for for joining
- 14:16us on the show today and enjoy the rest of the event.
- 14:19Cheers.
