- 0:21Speaker 1: We have two Hall of famers, a couple of MIC's
- 0:23Speaker 1: gotten it up. A funny thing happened to me in
- 0:26Speaker 1: Evanston over the weekend. As you know, Michael Olic senior
- 0:29Speaker 1: Michael Wilbon is a proud alum of Northwestern University. It's
- 0:33Speaker 1: a magical place. I saw him at the lacrosse finals,
- 0:36Speaker 1: Northwestern one yet another national championship, and Michael was so nice,
- 0:42Speaker 1: so attentive, spend so much quality time talking and speaking
- 0:47Speaker 1: with my daughter after the game that it moved me
- 0:50Speaker 1: on a very emotional weekend. It really moved me to
- 0:53Speaker 1: see how much care and how much thought Michael put
- 0:55Speaker 1: in to the conversation he had with Rachel and he
- 0:58Speaker 1: joins us right now here to start off the show. Michael,
- 1:01Speaker 1: thank you for joining us.
- 1:02Speaker 2: How are you.
- 1:03Speaker 3: I'm good, I'm good. I'm just you know, trying to
- 1:07Speaker 3: enjoy what seems to be a day off in this
- 1:09Speaker 3: epic series between San Antonio and and and okay, see
- 1:14Speaker 3: but yeah, and you're still getting over the high of
- 1:17Speaker 3: the weekend with winning that lacrosse championships to guy, So
- 1:20Speaker 3: that was that was good, mister Gullick. It's been too long.
- 1:23Speaker 3: How are you?
- 1:24Speaker 2: Oh, Michael, doing well, my friend. Always great to talk
- 1:27Speaker 2: to you. And I'm wondering, I hate to start this
- 1:30Speaker 2: out with a zinger to you and Northwestern all right,
- 1:34Speaker 2: going and watching the women's lacrosse women national championship? Is
- 1:39Speaker 2: that because you know they won't get one in football,
- 1:41Speaker 2: so you have to watch another sport win the national title.
- 1:45Speaker 3: No, we just know other people that like to think
- 1:48Speaker 3: they're superior athletes and won't get down.
- 1:55Speaker 1: And by the way, Michael, Mike, Mike, if Indiana could
- 1:58Speaker 1: do it, Northwestern could do it right.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Well, you know listen that you know that we get
- 2:02Speaker 3: into that whole why can't Why not us sing like
- 2:04Speaker 3: the Knicks fans are intoy now? And you know it's
- 2:08Speaker 3: interesting because you know, I grew up in Illinois, I
- 2:10Speaker 3: grew up next door to I know far more people
- 2:13Speaker 3: who went to IU from my life as a kid
- 2:17Speaker 3: and a teenager than I did and went to Northwestern. Uh,
- 2:21Speaker 3: so many kids went to IU, including my my idol,
- 2:23Speaker 3: Quinn Buckner. My athletic idol when I was growing up
- 2:25Speaker 3: was Quinn Buckner. Even though Quinn's only a couple of
- 2:28Speaker 3: years older than me, he was just the the the
- 2:31Speaker 3: the athlete in Chicago when I was a kid, when
- 2:34Speaker 3: we were kids, and so I I, you know, I
- 2:37Speaker 3: don't Indiana. You know, you know my wife went to Duke,
- 2:42Speaker 3: and you know, acc people can't stand each other. She
- 2:45Speaker 3: doesn't understand. She's like, why do you root for? Why
- 2:48Speaker 3: are you rooting for Indiana? Or how come sometimes you
- 2:51Speaker 3: root for you know, Produeer. I'm like, because we're not
- 2:54Speaker 3: like you people. We're not. That's why the Big ten
- 2:56Speaker 3: network works. That's why the Big Ten make more money
- 3:00Speaker 3: in tell media deals than the rest of you people,
- 3:03Speaker 3: because the Big ten people. Actually, I can root for Iowa.
- 3:06Speaker 3: I can root for Wisconsin to often do. I never
- 3:09Speaker 3: revealed that I ever root for Notre Dames, and I'd
- 3:12Speaker 3: like to get people like my friend Michael hard time.
- 3:15Speaker 3: But you know, I grew up ninety miles from Notre Dame.
- 3:17Speaker 3: This even though I like to say I hate Notre Dame,
- 3:19Speaker 3: I don't in any way. And it's a magical place too.
- 3:23Speaker 3: But I think that Midwestern sensibility, if you will, that
- 3:27Speaker 3: has a real impact on my life. So I yeah,
- 3:30Speaker 3: I root it for Indiana all the way last year,
- 3:33Speaker 3: all the way.
- 3:35Speaker 1: The great Michael Wobot is with us here Michael, You're
- 3:38Speaker 1: the perfect person to do this for us, just putting
- 3:40Speaker 1: this into perspective. You have spent your entire life covering
- 3:43Speaker 1: the NBA, the Knicks, just making it to the NBA Finals.
- 3:46Speaker 1: If you could put it in perspective for me, for
- 3:49Speaker 1: the audience, for goal of just what it means to
- 3:51Speaker 1: the NBA, that city, that fan base, and that organization.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Well, it's so funny, you know, as I'm talking about
- 3:57Speaker 3: my Midwestern roots and I'm in chicagoan through and through,
- 4:00Speaker 3: but I spent professionally. I've been going to Madison Square
- 4:04Speaker 3: Garden to cover Knicks games and parts of seasons and
- 4:07Speaker 3: playoff series in their entirety for forty five years, so
- 4:12Speaker 3: way more than half of my adult life to you know,
- 4:14Speaker 3: three quarters of it. I mean, I've been able to
- 4:16Speaker 3: observe the Knicks. And there are people in my life
- 4:20Speaker 3: who would be I've become friends with who. Patrick Ewing
- 4:23Speaker 3: is a dear and close friend, and I get to
- 4:25Speaker 3: see him every Knicks game now because he's there in
- 4:28Speaker 3: the garden as if this was the nineteen eighties, and
- 4:30Speaker 3: I know I work with talk about dear friends Tony
- 4:33Speaker 3: Corn as Tony was at the famous Willis reed game
- 4:38Speaker 3: May eighth, nineteen seventy Tony was I don't know he
- 4:42Speaker 3: was a teenager. He was at that game, and so
- 4:45Speaker 3: I have a sense of it. With being a longer
- 4:49Speaker 3: suffering Cubs fan over twice as long, I still have
- 4:53Speaker 3: a sense of what Knicks fans want, what they're about,
- 4:56Speaker 3: what it means. I don't know that it means as
- 4:58Speaker 3: much as the league. I think that's over stated. I
- 5:00Speaker 3: don't think. I don't think these things mean anything to
- 5:02Speaker 3: the league. Star players mean everything to that league. Victor
- 5:07Speaker 3: Winmbanyama right now is more important to that league than
- 5:10Speaker 3: than any team, including the Knicks. But having said that,
- 5:13Speaker 3: and that's just that's my theory on that league. I
- 5:18Speaker 3: I you know, I Josh Josh Hart went to my
- 5:21Speaker 3: son's rival high school, Sidwell Friends here in d C.
- 5:25Speaker 3: And I've gotten to know Josh Hart and off seasons
- 5:29Speaker 3: and stuff that happens here at home home. I'm in
- 5:32Speaker 3: DC right now, and I root for Josh Hart. I
- 5:35Speaker 3: love Josh Hart. Jalen Brunson Chicago kids who I've followed
- 5:40Speaker 3: since he was the Chicago kid when his father Rick
- 5:43Speaker 3: was was assisting for the Bulls, and so the Knicks
- 5:47Speaker 3: of I just find them very likable. Karl Anthony Town
- 5:51Speaker 3: to me, is as likable a figure if you get
- 5:54Speaker 3: to know people personally in the NBA as there is.
- 5:57Speaker 3: He's had some heartache in his life as a young
- 6:00Speaker 3: adult and easy to root for. But I don't want
- 6:03Speaker 3: to overstate it. I don't think. I do not think
- 6:05Speaker 3: that the Knicks internationally are the story. If they play
- 6:10Speaker 3: San Antonio. I think, okay See will win Game seven.
- 6:14Speaker 3: But man, when Banyama is the story. When Banyama individually
- 6:17Speaker 3: is the story in the NBA, He's the watchable person.
- 6:20Speaker 3: He is the young faith of that league.
- 6:24Speaker 2: He is He is the old radio adage of who
- 6:27Speaker 2: would you spend the most money to watch in a sport?
- 6:29Speaker 2: It would be Victor win Minyama right now. There's no
- 6:32Speaker 2: doubt about that. What do you say? What do you
- 6:35Speaker 2: say to Nick fans who arguably should feel good about
- 6:38Speaker 2: themselves and their team too good? Though about saying, boy,
- 6:42Speaker 2: everything is everything is lining up for us. We sweep
- 6:45Speaker 2: the Cavs, we have all this rest, we are going
- 6:48Speaker 2: to win the title.
- 6:50Speaker 3: You know, you know, Mike, this is crazy. I sort
- 6:53Speaker 3: of believe that, and I believe that the Ali Frasier
- 6:57Speaker 3: nature of this Western Conference final works in the Knicks favor. Two. Look,
- 7:03Speaker 3: I think I think both those teams are better than
- 7:05Speaker 3: the Knicks. Do I think the Knicks can and they
- 7:09Speaker 3: may very well be whoever emergers, Yes, I do, because
- 7:12Speaker 3: I think, Look, the rest is not gonna hurt them
- 7:14Speaker 3: because Game one is in the West anyway, right, So
- 7:18Speaker 3: the Knicks is gonna be rusty in game one, just
- 7:20Speaker 3: like they were rusty in Game one against Cleveland. They
- 7:22Speaker 3: were rusty in game one against I guess it was
- 7:24Speaker 3: Game two against Philly. Yeah, they're they The rest is
- 7:28Speaker 3: they're gonna be rusty, but they're gonna you know, they
- 7:32Speaker 3: can play out of it in Game one in the West.
- 7:35Speaker 3: And if they get blown out of that game because
- 7:37Speaker 3: they're rusty, so what they still they still got you know,
- 7:40Speaker 3: three at home, plus another one to get back in
- 7:43Speaker 3: San Antonio or Okay. See, so I actually, oh my god,
- 7:47Speaker 3: I can't believe I'm saying this. I actually buy what
- 7:50Speaker 3: the Knicks fans are selling. Yeah. By the way, by
- 7:53Speaker 3: the way, and you guys know this, I mean you
- 7:55Speaker 3: you've been around the stuffer as long as I have.
- 8:01Speaker 3: I find the Knicks players and Mike Brown has been
- 8:05Speaker 3: a personal friend. I find that team easy to root for.
- 8:08Speaker 3: It's Nicks fans I hate, not the team Nick fans.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Knicks fans are the worst.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Yes, yes, well, Michael. They want us to act like
- 8:16Speaker 1: we've been there before. But here's the problem. We've never
- 8:18Speaker 1: been here before.
- 8:19Speaker 3: You know, well, you had this to that fat year.
- 8:23Speaker 3: You know you're a little bit too young to have
- 8:25Speaker 3: seen this. I was eleven years old the first time
- 8:29Speaker 3: the Knicks got to the finals, and I was watching
- 8:30Speaker 3: with my father, you know on TV when you got
- 8:32Speaker 3: one game a week and you didn't see that much sullivanion,
- 8:35Speaker 3: you got the Knicks, And I remember thinking, wow, you know,
- 8:39Speaker 3: there's no Bill Russell because he retired the year just
- 8:43Speaker 3: the year earlier, so there's no Russell. The Knicks get there,
- 8:48Speaker 3: and I'm old enough to have I do. I remember it,
- 8:50Speaker 3: maybe not vividly. I remember the seventy three one vividly,
- 8:54Speaker 3: the seventy I don't. But I think it sets up
- 8:58Speaker 3: well for the team. That does. Mitchell Robinson, you know
- 9:02Speaker 3: hand thing, But I think it's I think it sets
- 9:05Speaker 3: them well for them, and my Knicks friends and family
- 9:10Speaker 3: members who are Knicks fans They're gonna drive me crazy
- 9:13Speaker 3: and I'm gonna hate them within three days, but I
- 9:16Speaker 3: really like the team.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Do you in a in a general question, do you
- 9:23Speaker 2: think for forgetting like the fans of who they want
- 9:26Speaker 2: to see? Do you think the league is happy with
- 9:29Speaker 2: the three teams left because we used to have, you
- 9:32Speaker 2: know this, the teams that we're trying to build with
- 9:35Speaker 2: two and three superstars. You know, San Antonio has one
- 9:38Speaker 2: in one Yama, New York. I guess Jalen Brunson would
- 9:42Speaker 2: be considered that. Do you think the league is happy with? Hey,
- 9:46Speaker 2: this is now how our league needs to be, not
- 9:49Speaker 2: trying to put two and three superstars together on a team.
- 9:53Speaker 3: You know what? In that model, Mike, I do believe that,
- 9:57Speaker 3: and it also takes some pressure off of the you know, well,
- 10:02Speaker 3: it's not the league, but teams can I find it. Look,
- 10:07Speaker 3: some teams free agents only go two places and people
- 10:09Speaker 3: can check them. People will say, oh, you know Jalen Brunton,
- 10:13Speaker 3: that wound up being a trade situation in Jalen Brnston
- 10:15Speaker 3: was a second round draft pick. Teams players superstar free agency,
- 10:20Speaker 3: we go to South Florida and southern California. That's it.
- 10:24Speaker 3: That's all. They don't go to San Antonio, they don't
- 10:27Speaker 3: go to Chicago, they don't go to New York. They
- 10:30Speaker 3: don't they go to southern California and South Florida. They
- 10:33Speaker 3: might get traded to those other destinations, but it's free agents.
- 10:38Speaker 3: So it's harder to build the team that way. And
- 10:41Speaker 3: so yes, I think that when you looked at now,
- 10:44Speaker 3: you know, the legal course now wants to go after tanking,
- 10:47Speaker 3: which I think is largely a bogus issue because I
- 10:49Speaker 3: think that most years it ain't worth tanking. For this
- 10:52Speaker 3: year it appears to have been that worth that. But
- 10:55Speaker 3: when you look at teams that have sort of grown
- 10:57Speaker 3: more organically, and the Nixt certainly were. They didn't have
- 11:02Speaker 3: you know, some you know, you know, wim Ban Yama,
- 11:04Speaker 3: Tim Junsan like lottery luck. They had to really put
- 11:07Speaker 3: this together, and they were smart with targeting Brunton, who
- 11:10Speaker 3: have been a second round draft pick. And Dallas didn't
- 11:13Speaker 3: really you know, appreciate or think they wanted to keep
- 11:16Speaker 3: with Luca and for all the reasons if the Mavericks
- 11:19Speaker 3: unwisely let him go. The Knicks were smart about the
- 11:22Speaker 3: way they put this team together. The trade for Karl
- 11:24Speaker 3: Anthony Towns the trade for for Anonobi. So yeah, And
- 11:29Speaker 3: I don't think it's because they play in New York.
- 11:30Speaker 3: I think it's the other factor you mentioned, which is
- 11:33Speaker 3: how how it was a symbol.
- 11:46Speaker 4: Hey, Michael Taylor here, I'm a massive Knicks fan. The
- 11:48Speaker 4: Knicks are really the only thing I have going in
- 11:50Speaker 4: my life right now. Is Jalen Brunson already on the
- 11:53Speaker 4: Knicks Mount Rushmore or does he have to win a
- 11:56Speaker 4: title to get there?
- 11:56Speaker 1: That's a good question.
- 11:57Speaker 3: I think you gotta win a title. Look, okay, so
- 12:00Speaker 3: I never did the Nick mount Rushmore. We do the
- 12:02Speaker 3: greatest argument, the greatest Nick ever argument. For me, some
- 12:05Speaker 3: of my age is it's Walt Fraser. I mean, Patrick
- 12:09Speaker 3: Ewing is a dear, dear friend, but he didn't win.
- 12:13Speaker 3: He was great. He may be the greatest Nick in
- 12:15Speaker 3: terms of time of service and getting close and he
- 12:18Speaker 3: got to the finals. I get it. But Fraser is
- 12:22Speaker 3: on that. To me. Monroe is on that. To me,
- 12:25Speaker 3: the on the on the on the Mount Rushmore, Patrick
- 12:28Speaker 3: Ewing is on that. To me, We're talking four and
- 12:31Speaker 3: I don't know who the fourth is. Maybe. I mean
- 12:34Speaker 3: people Tony would say, how dare you not put Bill
- 12:38Speaker 3: Bradley on it. How dare you not put Earl Monroe?
- 12:40Speaker 3: Earl Monroe is a Washington bullet, Baltimore bullet as much
- 12:44Speaker 3: to me as a Nick. So maybe I would put
- 12:47Speaker 3: Brunson on. You can put Bernard King on, but he
- 12:49Speaker 3: didn't get to the finals. So maybe Brunson is on
- 12:52Speaker 3: that list for me. But to be the greatest Nick ever,
- 12:58Speaker 3: you gotta win Clyde and Row, I mean Clyden Fraser
- 13:02Speaker 3: and Bill Bradley, they won two. You're not gonna get
- 13:06Speaker 3: me to leap frog those guys great players, Hall of Famers,
- 13:10Speaker 3: Alzheimer's You're not gonna get me to jump the list
- 13:13Speaker 3: when you don't have one. That's not the way that
- 13:16Speaker 3: works for me.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Michael, forgetting about the superstars in the state of the
- 13:20Speaker 1: NBA for a second. I think what's great about this
- 13:22Speaker 1: playoff for the NBA is you have market number one,
- 13:26Speaker 1: who has already secured a spot in the NBA Finals,
- 13:28Speaker 1: and the smallest market in the NBA trying to go
- 13:32Speaker 1: back to back. Right, it's crazy. Everyone has a shot.
- 13:35Speaker 3: I think it's good. Look, that's what that's what it's been.
- 13:38Speaker 3: You know, one of the many secret sauces for the
- 13:41Speaker 3: NFL is that nobody even thinks about the market size
- 13:45Speaker 3: of Green Bay. I mean, I mean they've won in
- 13:49Speaker 3: the ancient NFL and the modern NFL they won and
- 13:53Speaker 3: and the smallest market and smaller I think still that
- 13:56Speaker 3: any market in the NBA. Yeah, the small certainly smallers
- 14:01Speaker 3: in San Antonio. So yeah, I think that's a I
- 14:04Speaker 3: think that works. We've we've seen Milwaukee win again, so
- 14:09Speaker 3: just in the in the in the most recent since COVID,
- 14:13Speaker 3: you know, NBA Finals, We've we've had small market teams
- 14:16Speaker 3: with the San Antonio's back. So I tell you a
- 14:19Speaker 3: team you've been a roue, looked for, looked for in
- 14:22Speaker 3: terms of the next three to five years that could
- 14:24Speaker 3: pull up in their rear view mirror, not five, the
- 14:27Speaker 3: next two to three years is Utah. No matter who
- 14:31Speaker 3: they picked, Utah is assembling right now in front of
- 14:35Speaker 3: our eyes, a contending roster like next year, play in
- 14:40Speaker 3: or playoffs. The next year, it could be like okay,
- 14:46Speaker 3: see with with with good health and a little bit
- 14:49Speaker 3: of draft luck, Utah is gonna be there. So you
- 14:50Speaker 3: have another small market team. I think that's healthy. I
- 14:55Speaker 3: think everybody's fans all to think they have a chance,
- 14:58Speaker 3: and then what stands in the way. If something stands
- 15:00Speaker 3: in the way is incoonfidence, not the size of your city.
- 15:04Speaker 2: Boy, I tell you a Futah jumps in. Like you
- 15:06Speaker 2: said that the depth in the west is ridiculous.
- 15:09Speaker 3: So crazy.
- 15:10Speaker 2: We've talked a lot of let's talk. We talked a
- 15:12Speaker 2: lot of macro. Let's go micro. Who are the Knicks
- 15:15Speaker 2: playing next Tuesday?
- 15:16Speaker 3: In game one, Mike, I think that it's okay See.
- 15:21Speaker 3: I just think when you get at the late of
- 15:22Speaker 3: these playoffs and you guys know this, who got you
- 15:24Speaker 3: know that you've been watching stuff forever. When you look
- 15:27Speaker 3: at the games five, six, seven, and the home team
- 15:29Speaker 3: wins and they become increasingly blowouts, I think what that
- 15:33Speaker 3: demonstrates largely is, you know, when we're in this place
- 15:38Speaker 3: defending something that's dear to us, Okay See is and
- 15:42Speaker 3: they're working up a healthy dislike for each other. Now,
- 15:44Speaker 3: those two teams did not dislike each other to say, okay,
- 15:47Speaker 3: weimby and chet Okay, fine, the teams didn't. We saw
- 15:50Speaker 3: it last night, though we saw disliked last night. I
- 15:54Speaker 3: think okay See goes home and defends that. I said
- 15:57Speaker 3: yesterday before the game, I thought that Wimby had another
- 16:02Speaker 3: great performance in him. I didn't know if he had two.
- 16:05Speaker 3: I mean, you know, people naively watch this stuff. People players,
- 16:09Speaker 3: even the greatest players, don't have five or six great
- 16:11Speaker 3: games in the series. They they could have three. If
- 16:14Speaker 3: they have four, it's an all timer. If Wimby has
- 16:17Speaker 3: a fourth grade game in this series, it's an all
- 16:19Speaker 3: time series. Is it beyond him? No, it's not. I
- 16:23Speaker 3: just don't think that's gonna happen. I think that, you know,
- 16:26Speaker 3: HomeGrid and Hartenstein have enough in them to hold Wimby
- 16:30Speaker 3: to something mortal. And I think that Shake Gildas Alexander
- 16:34Speaker 3: will be that guy who feels the pressure. I think
- 16:37Speaker 3: his superpower is his calm and the fact that, Okay,
- 16:41Speaker 3: I'm in the slump. These guys are kick at my butt,
- 16:45Speaker 3: but he doesn't. He doesn't have palms up to the
- 16:47Speaker 3: referees a La Luca and Caitlin Clark. I love that
- 16:53Speaker 3: about Shake Gildas Alexander, and I think he tomorrow will
- 16:57Speaker 3: do what he needs to. Look Okay, see needs to
- 17:01Speaker 3: win another one if they're gonna win another one now,
- 17:04Speaker 3: Because Michael, you alluded to the West I mean, you know,
- 17:07Speaker 3: Minnesota's got some more in them. I think Denver will
- 17:10Speaker 3: retool around Jokic. You could still it's still one of
- 17:13Speaker 3: the three best players in the world. And you got
- 17:16Speaker 3: san Antonio on your heels. You know, if you're okayc
- 17:22Speaker 3: you don't play this like we're gonna be too cool
- 17:24Speaker 3: for school. You don't give one away. You win this
- 17:27Speaker 3: when you can.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Michael will get you out of here in just a second.
- 17:31Speaker 1: I mean this when I say it. Kelly Amanti Hiller,
- 17:33Speaker 1: who was on the show with us a couple of
- 17:35Speaker 1: days ago, nine national championships, you were at the game.
- 17:39Speaker 1: She deserves to be in the conversation of the greatest
- 17:41Speaker 1: coaches of all time in any sport, Michael, no doubt.
- 17:45Speaker 3: No doubt. I mean, look, here's okay, here's the testimony
