- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. I'm so excited for today's
- 0:19episode. These are some of the most
- 0:23meaningful, powerful guiding verses that are in the book of
- 0:29Ephesians. And that's saying something
- 0:31because if you have been paying attention as we've gone through
- 0:34Ephesians 1234 and now most of the way through 5, you know that
- 0:40there's some just great, encouraging, challenging
- 0:44thoughts from the Word of God. And this section here, we're
- 0:49going over today, which is Ephesians 5 versus 15 through
- 0:5221, Ephesians 515 through 21. This is a particularly
- 0:57meaningful portion with a lot of great things for us to, if you
- 1:03will, a lot of great principles for us to live our lives by.
- 1:07And this plays into our day-to-day.
- 1:10It plays into the church and what our purpose is there and
- 1:14what we're called to do. It involves worship and all
- 1:17sorts of different things. So buckle up and we're going to
- 1:20be diving right in. I'm going to try to read through
- 1:24this whole section 1st and then attack it piece by piece.
- 1:28That way you can get the full picture before we go in.
- 1:32He says pay careful attention then to how you walk.
- 1:35Not as unwise people, but as wise, making the most of the
- 1:39time, because the days are evil. So don't be foolish, but
- 1:44understand what the Lord's will is, and don't get drunk with
- 1:48wine which leads to reckless living, but be filled by the
- 1:52Spirit. Speaking to one another in
- 1:54psalms, hymns and spiritual songs.
- 1:56Singing and making music with your heart to the Lord.
- 2:00Giving thanks always for everything to God the Father in
- 2:03the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 2:05Submitting to one another in the fear of Christ.
- 2:11All right, so we're going to look at these verses and we're
- 2:13going to start off with verses 15 and 16 is kind of this first
- 2:17sentence. He says pay careful attention
- 2:20then to how you walk. The King James would phrase that
- 2:23this, see then that you walk circumspectly, that is that you
- 2:28are looking all around you to see what is going on, what the
- 2:34needs are, what the temptations are.
- 2:37You are to walk paying careful attention to everything that is
- 2:41going on around you. Now this is not so that in kind
- 2:47of a conspiracy theory way. This is not so that you can go,
- 2:52oh, I told you so to every iota of culture and of you know,
- 2:58governmental suspicion. That's not what God is intending
- 3:01here for you to pay careful attention to.
- 3:03He wants you to pay careful attention to your life, to the
- 3:07temptations that you will be facing, to your brothers and
- 3:11sisters in the Lord that need someone that will watch out for
- 3:14them, that will love them, that will care for them, that will
- 3:17challenge them to not walk into sin, but to walk with the Lord.
- 3:22So he says pay careful attention.
- 3:24The way that this always stuck in my head when I was a kid.
- 3:29As a teen, I went to a youth activity that was up at a Bible
- 3:35camp. And one of the things that we
- 3:38did at that teen camp was we did dodgeball.
- 3:41And there was a specific version of dodgeball where once a person
- 3:45got hit, they went behind their opposing team and so they would
- 3:52be standing behind the opposing team.
- 3:55And as you know, balls were thrown and, and their team was
- 3:58trying to get out the opposing team.
- 4:01If a ball went past your opponents and it came to you as
- 4:06you were standing behind them, you could whack him in the back
- 4:10with a dodge ball. And so you had to not just pay
- 4:14attention to the people in front of you and to the dodge balls
- 4:17that they were throwing. You also had to pay attention so
- 4:20that there were no dodge balls that were behind you and that no
- 4:23one behind you had grabbed 1 and was going to check it at you.
- 4:27So you had to be circumspect. You had to be paying careful
- 4:31attention on all fronts. Many times as Christians, we can
- 4:36get so focused on one aspect of the Christian life or one aspect
- 4:41of our life that we allow the others to deteriorate down.
- 4:46Sadly, this is something that was very true of many
- 4:50individuals that were involved in like mass evangelism events.
- 4:54So John Wesley, it was either John Wesley or George Whitfield.
- 4:59They were both at kind of that same time period, both in
- 5:04England and in the Americas preaching the gospel, I can't
- 5:09remember which individual it was offhand, that just was so
- 5:13devoted to sharing the gospel and evangelism that they totally
- 5:19neglected their wife and their family and that their ministry,
- 5:25well, lots of other people thought how great they were.
- 5:28They totally destroyed their home life and that first
- 5:31ministry that God called them to.
- 5:34Even as we'll see next episode, the call is to love our wives as
- 5:39Christ loved the church and gave himself for her.
- 5:44And whether it was Wesley or Whitfield, they did not love
- 5:49their wife like Christ loved the church.
- 5:52They loved evangelism, and they wanted to take care of Christ's
- 5:55bride, which is a a worthy goal, but they did so at the expense
- 5:59of their own bride. And so here I think we can pay
- 6:02careful attention, not just to one thing.
- 6:05Don't be so wrapped up in your devotions that you neglect love
- 6:11or care of other people. Don't be so devoted to learning
- 6:16new and deeper and deeper things in the Bible that you forget
- 6:19that you are supposed to evangelize others and make
- 6:22disciples of Jesus. Don't be so enamored with doing
- 6:28good for others and kind of like a charity benevolence type way
- 6:32that you neglect the local church.
- 6:34And the reverse of all of those is also true.
- 6:37The the Christian life is something that we are called to
- 6:40live with our whole being and there are so many good things
- 6:45that we are called to do, but it requires us to pay attention.
- 6:48You will not live the Christian life that God wants you to on
- 6:52autopilot. You won't live the Christian
- 6:55life God wants you to on autopilot.
- 6:57You have to pay attention to what you're doing, when you're
- 7:00doing it, and how you're doing it.
- 7:02So he says, pay you careful attention.
- 7:04Then how you walk. Not as unwise people, but as
- 7:06wise, making the most of the time because the days are evil.
- 7:12I want to look at this word here.
- 7:16This is the Greek word exa garazo.
- 7:22This is to redeem, it is to deliver back to someone.
- 7:26So something has been captured and you are buying it off of the
- 7:32person that has current possession of it, but they
- 7:35shouldn't have it. So this is Julius Caesar being
- 7:39redeemed, liberated, delivered from the pirates that have him
- 7:45held for ransom. So Paul and verse 16 tells us
- 7:49make the most of the time, redeem it by the time back,
- 7:54deliver the time. He says because the days are
- 7:57evil. He says there is not much time
- 8:00that you and I have, especially as Paul is writing this, there's
- 8:03a lot of persecution that was happening.
- 8:05Paul knew this better than almost anyone.
- 8:08And so Paul says, make the most of the time that God has given
- 8:12you. Don't act like, well, I got 30
- 8:14years to, you know, follow the Lord and maybe I'll wait, you
- 8:19know, 10-15 years and then I'll really buckle down.
- 8:21No, no, no, you don't know how long you have.
- 8:24Buckle down right now. Buy back the time because it's
- 8:28valuable. And yes, you might not be able
- 8:32to do as many fun things as you would otherwise do.
- 8:35You might not always get your way like you would want to if
- 8:38you are walking in God's way, buying back the time, redeeming
- 8:42it, using it for what God has called you to because you're
- 8:46paying attention to how you're walking.
- 8:48But that's all right, because that results in an everlasting
- 8:53reward. You are investing, so you're
- 8:56losing some, you know, money, you're losing some currency.
- 8:59But God is good to bring it back to us and to reward us for it.
- 9:06So that's what we read in verses 15 and 16.
- 9:08Then verse 17 he says, so don't be foolish, but understand what
- 9:13the Lord's will is. How do I know the will of the
- 9:16Lord read Scripture? And if as you're reading
- 9:20Scripture, if it isn't clear, maybe if you have some questions
- 9:24on, OK, should I make this choice or this choice?
- 9:27Should I move here or there? Should I take this job or not
- 9:31take this job? Can I tell you the Lord, in
- 9:34addition to His Word and His Holy Spirit, He has given you
- 9:38spiritual leaders who are there to help guide and direct you
- 9:43make full use of that for so many people.
- 9:47It's, well, let me ask, you know, just some random person
- 9:51that'll tell me what I want to hear and I know they'll side
- 9:53with whatever my wishes are. That's not necessarily what we
- 9:57are called to do. Instead, we want to know not
- 10:00just what does human advice say? What does the Lord's advice say?
- 10:05What is the Lord's will hear? And so first and foremost,
- 10:09always go to the word and then listen to the Holy Spirit as he
- 10:13wants to speak to you through the word.
- 10:15If you're like, I can't really tell, talk to other godly
- 10:19people, talk to your pastors, talk to those that maybe are a
- 10:23small group teacher or leader within your church.
- 10:27And as Proverbs says, with the well advised is wisdom.
- 10:34And so or you have the verse that says in the multitude of
- 10:38counselors there is victory or safety.
- 10:42So get a multitude of counsel, especially biblically wise
- 10:46counsel. Then verse #18 and and here he
- 10:50gives this, it becomes a run on sentence.
- 10:55So there are three actions that we're supposed to do flowing out
- 11:00of being filled by the Spirit. But Paul gives the example of
- 11:04what does it mean or what does it look like to be filled by the
- 11:09Holy Spirit? Do you start speaking in another
- 11:13language or kind of a gibberish language?
- 11:16Do you suddenly gain powers to be able to heal everyone around
- 11:20you? What does it look like to be
- 11:22filled by the Spirit? Well, he gives three ways that
- 11:25that looks, but the overall experience he describes, like he
- 11:31says, don't get drunk with wine, which leads to reckless living.
- 11:36Many of you, you have been drunk off either wine or vodka or, you
- 11:41know, beer, whiskey, whatever it is, whatever your thing is, you
- 11:45have been drunk before where you are still in control of your
- 11:50faculties. It's still you.
- 11:53It's not that there's, you know, a bottle or something that's
- 11:56moving your, your body around or making your mouth move, you
- 12:01know, like a puppet or a ventriloquist or something.
- 12:04No, it, it really is still you, but it's you, but different.
- 12:09It's you controlled by something else that what you are partaking
- 12:15in, what you are, the actions you're taking, the words you're
- 12:19saying. It's still you, but you're not
- 12:22necessarily with the one with your hands on the steering
- 12:25wheel. Here Paul actually gives this.
- 12:28Don't get drunk with wine. Get drunk with the spirit.
- 12:30Let the Spirit be the one that is controlling your words and
- 12:33your thoughts and your actions. That if you will, you are
- 12:38driving under the influence not of something that will take away
- 12:43all your inhibitions, but instead He is the Holy Spirit's
- 12:48the one that will take away your sinful inhibitions and will lead
- 12:53you into right action and right language and right words.
- 12:58And here's what he said. So don't get drunk with wine,
- 13:01which leads to reckless living. The result of intoxication is
- 13:06maybe you make bad decisions, maybe you lose friendships.
- 13:10You know, nowadays with cars and stuff like that, you have drunk
- 13:13driving, which can be a terrible scourge.
- 13:16There is just all sorts of devastation that happens with
- 13:19that says, but with the Holy Spirit, it all leads to good
- 13:23things. Wine can lead you to reckless
- 13:27living. You can ask Lot and his
- 13:30daughters about the dangers of wine, but as you look at the
- 13:34Holy Spirit, He is always going to lead you to make good
- 13:38decisions. And though it is still you, you
- 13:41are being controlled, influenced by Him.
- 13:44So what does He lead you to do? Verse #19 speaking to one
- 13:48another in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs.
- 13:52Singing and making music with your heart to the Lord.
- 13:56So there's three actions the Spirit leads us to when we're
- 14:00filled with Him. We sing the praise of God, slash
- 14:05speak the word of God. I'll, I'll go over that one SEC.
- 14:08We give thanks to God and we submit to one another.
- 14:12That's what it looks like to be filled with the Spirit is the
- 14:16word of God comes out of us. The praise and thanks of God is
- 14:22within us, and a submission, a humble submission like God gets
- 14:29extended to those around us. All right, so #1 speaking
- 14:32yourselves in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and
- 14:34making music with your heart to the Lord.
- 14:38All right, some of you are like, listen, I'm not that great at
- 14:41music. This really isn't for me.
- 14:43No, no, no, two things here. Number 1, He, he first says,
- 14:46speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual
- 14:50songs. So there is an element of music
- 14:53here, but the important part of this is that it is the word of
- 14:57Christ that is coming out and across.
- 15:00So Colossians chapter 3 and verse #16 would be kind of the
- 15:05parallel passage to this where Paul says something very similar
- 15:09to the church at Colossae. And he says, let the word of
- 15:13Christ dwell richly among you in all wisdom, teaching and
- 15:17admonishing one another through psalms, hymns and spiritual
- 15:21songs, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts that it
- 15:26is the word of God that ought to be the songs of the people of
- 15:31God. And we can see this even in the
- 15:34order that he gives here Psalms. This would be the inspired Old
- 15:39Testament Scriptures that would give us the language that we
- 15:43would sing about South. Psalm 23 The Lord is my
- 15:47shepherd. You can think of Psalm one, O 3.
- 15:52I'm going to back up here one quick second.
- 15:54So in the early church, and then especially during the
- 15:59Reformation in the 15 to 1700s, there was a huge importance
- 16:04placed on actually singing the Psalms.
- 16:07So this is God's inspired songbook.
- 16:11This is God's hymnal, and so we ought to sing it.
- 16:15And actually during the Reformation time period, the 15
- 16:18and 1700s, there was a lot of discussion on, well, should we
- 16:22be writing any new music of our own or should we only be singing
- 16:28the Psalms? And so you can encounter
- 16:30different denominations today that will only sing the Psalms.
- 16:34I think because the Psalms tell us 6 times to sing a new song to
- 16:39the Lord, there is an encouragement that we see we
- 16:42receive both from there and then here in Ephesians 5 and in
- 16:45Colossians 3, to sing new songs to the Lord as well that go
- 16:50outside of the Psalms. But it is an important thing to
- 16:55sing through the Psalms. This is something that I am
- 16:58really passionate about. This is something that I LED our
- 17:02church in Washington state to begin singing many Psalms.
- 17:07My my eventual goal for any church that I am a part of is
- 17:12every Sunday we'd at least be singing one Psalm.
- 17:16Actually, this month at Tabernacle in September of 2025,
- 17:22we are learning a Psalm together.
- 17:25Psalm, Oh my goodness, I can't remember Psalm 62.
- 17:29My soul will wait for you written by Sovereign Grace
- 17:32Music. And so we're going to be
- 17:34learning and singing that Psalm together.
- 17:37I'm also really grateful for amazing ones from the past, like
- 17:40sometimes by step by Rich Mullins.
- 17:42Oh God, you are my God, and I will ever praise you.
- 17:45I will seek you in the morning and I will learn to walk in your
- 17:48ways. And step by step you'll lead me,
- 17:50and I will follow you all of my days.
- 17:52I love 10,000 reasons bless the Lord.
- 17:56You're rich in love and you're slow to anger.
- 17:59Your name is great, and your heart is kind.
- 18:01For all your greatness I will keep on singing. 10,000 reasons
- 18:05for my heart to find. Bless the Lord, O my soul and
- 18:09all that is within me. Bless His holy name.
- 18:13You have psalms like that. You can have Psalm 23 either,
- 18:17you know, Phil Wickham has a version of that.
- 18:19There's the old hymn, The King of Love, My Shepherd is you can.
- 18:24I think there's a newer one, I Am Not Alone, that's also
- 18:27written from Psalm 23. You can look at Shane and Shane
- 18:33have written several songs from the Psalms, and if you go back
- 18:39and listen to any of the first four books of Psalms that we've
- 18:42gone through on Tabernacle Talk, anytime that there's a Psalm
- 18:46that I know of that's connected with that, I'll tell you guys,
- 18:48hey, go listen to this. This is because singing the
- 18:51Psalms is important. It's a way that I have learned
- 18:54to learn the word of God through Psalms.
- 18:57So that's really important. The Psalms tell us about Jesus.
- 19:01That's what Christ tells us in the end of the Gospel of Luke
- 19:05that Jesus went through starting at the law and the prophets, and
- 19:09he showed through the law and the prophets and the Psalms that
- 19:13the Messiah was the one spoken about all throughout Scripture.
- 19:17And so the Psalms tell us about Jesus.
- 19:20And so when we were going through the Psalms on Tabernacle
- 19:22talk, that was one of the things that I really wanted to try and
- 19:25point out to you guys is Jesus is the point of this.
- 19:27So we speak to each other in the word of God, starting with the
- 19:32Psalms and then he says hymns. This is any song that is lifted
- 19:36up in praise to God. This isn't how great thou art or
- 19:40when I survey. That's not what God is saying.
- 19:42He says speaking yourselves in Psalms that is inspired Old
- 19:45Testament scripture, the the hymnal of you know David, you
- 19:50have hymns, which is any song that is to or about God and
- 19:55there you have spiritual songs that these are songs many people
- 19:58believe that would be written as a result of the Holy Spirit is
- 20:01working in your life and out of your gratitude to God and your
- 20:05worship of him, you create new music.
- 20:09And so here, psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, if you will,
- 20:12the songs that were written, the songs that have been written,
- 20:16and the songs that will be written.
- 20:18And he says singing and making music with your heart to the
- 20:22Lord. So lifting God up in praise and
- 20:26to one another as well. When there's the music time at a
- 20:30local church, it is not just for you to listen to other people
- 20:34praise. It is actually for you to
- 20:36participate so that the person in the row in front of you would
- 20:41hear someone praising God behind them and that they would see
- 20:44someone praising God in front of them.
- 20:46That they could look over and they could see the little kid
- 20:49singing praise to the Lord. And they can look this other
- 20:52direction and they could see someone that is fighting cancer
- 20:56that is praising the Lord. And all together there is
- 20:59encouragement as we all affirm our faith in Christ together and
- 21:03His work as we sing and declare our belief in the promises of
- 21:07the Word of God that there is encouragement that happens
- 21:10there. How could you do that?
- 21:12It's through the Holy Spirit that He has God's Word becoming
- 21:16out of you, especially in song to be able to encourage other
- 21:20people. Then verse #20 giving thanks
- 21:23always for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord
- 21:26Jesus Christ. A Christian is a grateful
- 21:29person, A spirit filled person is a thankful person, a think
- 21:35filled person. And I don't think I have to
- 21:38elaborate much more on that. I think you guys get that if
- 21:40we're grumbling and complaining and whining, that's a great
- 21:44indication that we are not being filled with the Spirit.
- 21:47If you are filled with the Spirit, gratitude will come out
- 21:50of your life and out of your mouth towards other people.
- 21:53So be filled with the Spirit. Have the word of God come out of
- 21:56you, have gratitude to the Lord thanks to him, praise to him
- 21:59come out of you. And then he says, submitting to
- 22:01one another in the fear of Christ, that we're not insistent
- 22:05on our own way, our greatness, our position, our authority,
- 22:08that we are wanting to lay down on our lives however we can for
- 22:12the sake of each other. Not as a result of other
- 22:16people's like greatness over us, but instead because Jesus
- 22:21humbled himself and served us and came for us, died for us,
- 22:26gave his righteousness to us. He has given us our spiritual
- 22:30gifts. He's given us his word, He's
- 22:31given us his Spirit. He's given us eternal life.
- 22:34He's given us his bride, the church that we humble ourselves
- 22:39and we give. We're generous, we're kind to
- 22:42others. So I want to encourage you
- 22:45today. It's been a little bit longer
- 22:47episode. Thanks for sticking around.
- 22:50Pay careful attention to your Christian life.
- 22:52It's not going to happen on autopilot.
- 22:54So choose to follow the Lord. The only way you can follow the
- 22:59Lord is by being filled with the Spirit.
- 23:01You allow him to call the shots that even if it might not be
- 23:04something that you feel comfortable doing, the Spirit
- 23:07will help you to do it. Just like there might be
- 23:09something that you might not normally make that take that
- 23:13action or say those words or or be so blunt with someone, but
- 23:17the wine enables you to do something that you would be
- 23:21hesitant to do on your own. So the Spirit helps us to be
- 23:24able to do what is good, what is right, which is to sing the
- 23:28praise of God, declaring the word of God to one another by
- 23:33giving thanks to the Lord always and everything.
- 23:36And then laying down our lives for others, submitting to each
- 23:39other that we become on the same mission, the same team, and
- 23:44we're all rowing the same direction for the Lord in the
- 23:48fear of Christ that we recognize because Christ has done this,
- 23:51because He's modeled the behavior.
- 23:53That is what we are called to as well.
- 23:56Well, thanks for tuning in today and next episode.
- 23:58We're talking about marriage and some verses that have been often
- 24:02misused, but are deeply under appreciated for the quality of
- 24:08Christian life that we are called to, how we ought to view
- 24:12the Church of Christ. All of it's included in next
- 24:15episode. And so looking forward to that
- 24:17time with you. Thanks for tuning in.
