- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan, and this is episode number three,
- 0:19Speaker 1: d and twelve, and today in the show, we're back
- 0:22Speaker 1: for another episode of our rut Fresh radio mini series
- 0:25Speaker 1: in which we're getting the latest and greatest intel on
- 0:28Speaker 1: what deer doing right now, the conditions that are present
- 0:31Speaker 1: in how to kill a buck? All right, welcome to
- 0:46Speaker 1: the Wired to Hunt podcast, brought to you by Onyx.
- 0:49Speaker 1: We are here for another rut Fresh radio episode. This
- 0:53Speaker 1: is our weekly mini series during the hunting season in
- 0:56Speaker 1: which we chat with hunters from across the country about
- 0:59Speaker 1: what's happening right now, how current conditions are impacting dear behavior,
- 1:04Speaker 1: what the activity levels are, what the progress of the
- 1:07Speaker 1: rut is, and then ultimately, how can we kill a
- 1:10Speaker 1: buck right now? That's what we're in chat with all
- 1:12Speaker 1: these different guys about Spencer, you know, is running the
- 1:15Speaker 1: show as far as getting those interviews done, and he
- 1:18Speaker 1: is with me. Now, what's the word, Spencer? Things cranking out? Yeah,
- 1:23Speaker 1: across the country, hunters are excited because of all time
- 1:28Speaker 1: of year is late October. You can't go wrong. And
- 1:30Speaker 1: then we also have a cold front coming in, and uh,
- 1:34Speaker 1: my job gets even harder this time of year and
- 1:37Speaker 1: for like the next three weeks because guys are tougher
- 1:40Speaker 1: to track down. Everybody is in a tree stand, or
- 1:44Speaker 1: somebody is helping a buddy blood trailer deer, or somebody
- 1:48Speaker 1: is camping at some lodge where they don't have service.
- 1:51Speaker 1: And so you can always tell when hunters from our
- 1:55Speaker 1: podcast get more excited about the rut because they are
- 1:58Speaker 1: harder to track down. Have you had to interview anyone
- 2:03Speaker 1: in a tree stand yet? Like, is anyone called in
- 2:05Speaker 1: from the tree? No. Over the four years of doing this,
- 2:09Speaker 1: we've done a lot of interviews, like in vehicles on
- 2:12Speaker 1: the way to a hunt, but we haven't done that yet.
- 2:15Speaker 1: I think that should be your goal for this year
- 2:17Speaker 1: is try to get someone to give you a from
- 2:19Speaker 1: the tree report. That'd be good, that would uh, that
- 2:22Speaker 1: would make season for unique for sure. You know, maybe
- 2:26Speaker 1: maybe you can get it in the field report from me.
- 2:28Speaker 1: I'll be on the phone and then part way through
- 2:30Speaker 1: a conversation, as I'm whispering to you, my target bucks
- 2:33Speaker 1: gonna show up. And I'm gonna spook him. That would
- 2:35Speaker 1: be part of the course with me. So maybe I
- 2:37Speaker 1: should just keep that trend going, you know, or we
- 2:40Speaker 1: could title it watch Mark Screw Another hunt up. Have
- 2:43Speaker 1: you been out since our last chat? You did a
- 2:46Speaker 1: little bit of South Dakota Hunt or something last time
- 2:48Speaker 1: we talked. Anything since Um, I participated in Montana's rifle
- 2:53Speaker 1: opener killed a mule deer in full velvet. Yet he
- 2:59Speaker 1: was a stag buck cactus book jever term you prefer um,
- 3:04Speaker 1: I think the technical term would be like cryptosism, And
- 3:08Speaker 1: I'm not sure if I'm pronouncing that, sorry to any
- 3:11Speaker 1: biologists out there who would know otherwise. But he had
- 3:14Speaker 1: UM two underdeveloped tests that never dropped, and so his
- 3:18Speaker 1: testosterone would never rise, and he did not participate in
- 3:22Speaker 1: the ruts. Uh. And it was just a really cool deer.
- 3:25Speaker 1: That's cool. It's it's kind of cool, uh, in particular
- 3:29Speaker 1: for you to have shot that, because I feel like
- 3:31Speaker 1: you've written a few articles about that. I remember seeing
- 3:33Speaker 1: you talking about this and like a couple of years ago, right. Yeah,
- 3:36Speaker 1: I'm always fascinated with the odd ball deer, the ones
- 3:39Speaker 1: that uh develop an extra main beam or the ones
- 3:43Speaker 1: that never shed their velvet or the ones that never dropped,
- 3:46Speaker 1: the rattlers, and I feel like I've covered all of
- 3:48Speaker 1: those at some point in my writing career. So to
- 3:51Speaker 1: see a deer like that in the field is is
- 3:53Speaker 1: kind of surreal to be like, oh, I know what's
- 3:55Speaker 1: going on here? Um, And so that was a fun hunt. Yeah.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Does something about those deer resonate with you? Can you
- 4:02Speaker 1: relate to them in some way? A little bit of
- 4:04Speaker 1: an oddball tests that never dropped. You wouldn't call me
- 4:10Speaker 1: the the baritone whatever otherwise, I guess that's a good point. Oh,
- 4:18Speaker 1: going off the rails here. Um. You know, last time
- 4:22Speaker 1: we talked, I kind of called it. I thought over
- 4:24Speaker 1: the next week I'd have a good chance at had
- 4:26Speaker 1: a good buck and just has not materialized. Um. We
- 4:30Speaker 1: had a three day hunt on the back forty that
- 4:32Speaker 1: was ridiculously slow. Between me and Doug during we saw
- 4:38Speaker 1: mm hmmm, one dough, one year and a half old buck,
- 4:42Speaker 1: and one button buck during shooting ours. Um over the
- 4:45Speaker 1: course of three days. So that was brutal. And then um,
- 4:51Speaker 1: I've been out handful more times trying to get after
- 4:55Speaker 1: Tran that four year old eight porn m after and
- 4:58Speaker 1: that hasn't been working out. Um, just seeing doze and
- 5:03Speaker 1: a few young bucks. Um, so you know that could.
- 5:07Speaker 1: I'm not saying that there's a quote unquote lull or
- 5:10Speaker 1: anything that was going on. I think simply we just
- 5:11Speaker 1: weren't in the right places. Um. You know, trying to
- 5:14Speaker 1: be somewhat conservative with the wind direction and making sure
- 5:17Speaker 1: I'm not taking stab unless I've got the right conditions. Uh.
- 5:22Speaker 1: I thought I'd have some opportunities, but didn't happen. But
- 5:25Speaker 1: we had a cold front, like you said, coming through
- 5:27Speaker 1: today raining At the moment, I'm hoping it's going to
- 5:31Speaker 1: be like a light, misty drizzle. If that's the case
- 5:34Speaker 1: today and tomorrow would be really good and then just
- 5:36Speaker 1: cold weather from here and out into November. So so
- 5:39Speaker 1: I think things will be getting much better here soon.
- 5:42Speaker 1: But for me at least, it's been like a four
- 5:45Speaker 1: out of ten. Um. But any day now, any time now,
- 5:50Speaker 1: it's going to change. Yeah. And this time of year,
- 5:52Speaker 1: probably more than other times a year, hunters become concerned
- 5:57Speaker 1: with moon phase and there it's a full moon or
- 6:00Speaker 1: a new moon or whatever. Um. I don't dabble in
- 6:04Speaker 1: that stuff too much, Mark, but I know that even
- 6:07Speaker 1: if you don't, you still like pay close attention to it.
- 6:10Speaker 1: This year, we have a rutting moon on November twelfth,
- 6:15Speaker 1: which is very similar to when it was on November.
- 6:20Speaker 1: In theory, that should create a trickle rut. Can you
- 6:23Speaker 1: explain if what that means if you're somebody who believes
- 6:26Speaker 1: in the running moon. Okay, yeah, so I'm I'm not
- 6:30Speaker 1: someone who puts too much into that, um, but I
- 6:33Speaker 1: do kind of keep tabs on. I'm intrigued to buy
- 6:36Speaker 1: all the moon stuff, but I don't live and breathe
- 6:38Speaker 1: by it at all. UM. So yeah, that this running
- 6:40Speaker 1: moon is basically that the theory goes um that the
- 6:45Speaker 1: second full moon after the autumn equinox, I think supposedly
- 6:48Speaker 1: triggers peaking or the peak of running activity. That's the theory. Um.
- 6:53Speaker 1: And so in this case, with that November twelve running moon,
- 6:57Speaker 1: that would indicate a later peak of running activity and
- 7:00Speaker 1: usual um, which then can lead to something that has
- 7:04Speaker 1: been termed this trickle rut, which essentially just means uh,
- 7:08Speaker 1: slow ebbing and flowing of running activity. That will You'll
- 7:13Speaker 1: get a little bit of it in late October, and
- 7:15Speaker 1: then it'll be contrickle off, and then you'll get a
- 7:17Speaker 1: little bit more in mid November and it will kind
- 7:19Speaker 1: of trickle off. Basically, it's a it's a poor rut.
- 7:22Speaker 1: The theory goes when you have that kind of timing. Now,
- 7:27Speaker 1: the consensus across most biologists is that the moon does
- 7:32Speaker 1: not trigger actual breeding behavior. The changes in daylight trigger
- 7:38Speaker 1: breeding behavior, so that happens at the same time every
- 7:42Speaker 1: year in most places across the Midwest and the northern
- 7:45Speaker 1: half of the United States. That means that we're getting
- 7:48Speaker 1: a give or take typical mid November ish peak of
- 7:53Speaker 1: actual breeding. Would that be in the case, then the
- 7:56Speaker 1: couple of weeks, the three to two to three weeks
- 7:58Speaker 1: before that peak are usually when you're seeing the running activity.
- 8:01Speaker 1: The hunters want to see the running around, the fighting,
- 8:04Speaker 1: the chasing, scraping, etcetera, etcetera. That's usually hamp happening as
- 8:09Speaker 1: we ramp up towards that point when the most does
- 8:11Speaker 1: are ready to breed. Um. So, no matter what the
- 8:15Speaker 1: moon tells me, I always know that the last week
- 8:17Speaker 1: of October in the first two weeks of November should
- 8:19Speaker 1: be pretty darn good. Um. Now, maybe could something with
- 8:25Speaker 1: the rut or with the moon, you know, impact the
- 8:28Speaker 1: intensity of daylight activity during those periods that I might
- 8:32Speaker 1: be a little bit more open to maybe there's some
- 8:35Speaker 1: connection with daylight movement versus nighttime movement and the intensity
- 8:40Speaker 1: that we see as hunters. There maybe could be something there.
- 8:42Speaker 1: I'm not gonna say that. I don't know that's the case,
- 8:46Speaker 1: so I keep tabs on it. Um. I have not
- 8:49Speaker 1: seen any strong correlation with my own hunts and those timings,
- 8:52Speaker 1: but you know, if there's a good moon phase that
- 8:55Speaker 1: correlates with when I'm out there hunting, I'm I guess,
- 8:58Speaker 1: I'm like, hey, I'll take it if it helps me
- 8:59Speaker 1: a little bit. Another moon thing that people pay attention
- 9:03Speaker 1: to this time of year is the red moon. Again,
- 9:06Speaker 1: this is a theory that I'm not bought into myself,
- 9:09Speaker 1: but I'm you know, open to look at it and
- 9:11Speaker 1: intrigued by it. Um. Adam Hayes always talks about this.
- 9:14Speaker 1: A number of pretty darn good hunters, you know, point
- 9:17Speaker 1: to the moon as as some kind of influencer. And
- 9:20Speaker 1: I guess it's worth noting that we do have a
- 9:22Speaker 1: red moon set of conditions coming up over the next
- 9:26Speaker 1: few days. UM. Basically, what this quote unquote. Red moon
- 9:30Speaker 1: is is when the moon is directly overhead or directly underfoot.
- 9:34Speaker 1: That means the moon is right up above you in
- 9:36Speaker 1: the sky, are all the way beneath us, And that
- 9:39Speaker 1: supposedly triggers a little bit more movement during daylight. And
- 9:44Speaker 1: so when that overhead or underfoot period coincides with the
- 9:49Speaker 1: usual peak of movement, which is as you know, dawn
- 9:52Speaker 1: or dusk, when you got the right moon that coincides
- 9:55Speaker 1: with that usual good time anyways, supposedly that's going to
- 9:58Speaker 1: help you see a little bit more. And we have
- 10:00Speaker 1: have that coming up. So Halloween tomorrow, we've got a
- 10:03Speaker 1: red moon time of four forty pm UM, at least
- 10:07Speaker 1: in in my neck of the woods. Friday November one,
- 10:10Speaker 1: five nine pm Saturday, the second, two Sunday the third.
- 10:16Speaker 1: So these are supposedly really good times to see a
- 10:19Speaker 1: little extra daylight movement during those evening sits. I can't
- 10:23Speaker 1: attest to it. I'm not vouching for I'm simply telling
- 10:25Speaker 1: you it's something some people pay attention to. Um And
- 10:30Speaker 1: like I said, if it leads to me killing Tran
- 10:32Speaker 1: tonight or tomorrow, I'm a happy camper. Yeah. And even
- 10:37Speaker 1: if you are a hunter who doesn't necessarily believe in
- 10:40Speaker 1: the moon phase or think that a trickle rut is
- 10:44Speaker 1: a reality. Um, you probably do pay attention in cold
- 10:46Speaker 1: fronts and looking ahead at the extended forecast. Here kind
- 10:49Speaker 1: of after these next few days we get a really
- 10:52Speaker 1: long bout of stagnant weather. And so I was looking
- 10:57Speaker 1: ahead to the dates for my rudication, which is November
- 11:00Speaker 1: one through ten, I believe, um, And it seemed like
- 11:04Speaker 1: there was no significant cold front or warm front during
- 11:08Speaker 1: that time. And so what that tells me in something
- 11:11Speaker 1: that we saw a few years ago. It might have
- 11:12Speaker 1: been twenty seventy, and I can't remember for certain, um,
- 11:15Speaker 1: when you get that stagment, whether you often get a
- 11:18Speaker 1: consistent wind direction. And so this is notable because if
- 11:21Speaker 1: you're a hunter who has a small property or limited
- 11:25Speaker 1: setups um or hasn't necessarily got into run and got
- 11:28Speaker 1: hunting yet, that you might burn out all of your
- 11:33Speaker 1: for example, north west wind stands when you have this
- 11:37Speaker 1: kind of stagnant weather, And so that's something to start
- 11:39Speaker 1: planning for right now. So it doesn't get to be
- 11:42Speaker 1: November four and you're looking at like the three day
- 11:45Speaker 1: forecast and you say, every day is a north wind,
- 11:47Speaker 1: and then you get to November seven and it's the
- 11:49Speaker 1: same thing. Um, So that's certainly something to plan for
- 11:53Speaker 1: as we get into those long stretches of guys hit
- 11:55Speaker 1: in the woods. That's a good point. It's looks like
- 11:58Speaker 1: a lot of cold weather, which is good. But to
- 12:00Speaker 1: your to what you just said, there a whole lot
- 12:03Speaker 1: of west, northwest or west winds at least as I'm
- 12:05Speaker 1: looking here in southern Michigan. So it's a great reason
- 12:09Speaker 1: to try to get a little bit mobile and try
- 12:11Speaker 1: some kind of running gun set allows you to switch
- 12:13Speaker 1: things up or hopefully people planned for those westerly winds
- 12:16Speaker 1: or whatever it is they've got in their neck of
- 12:18Speaker 1: the woods and and it will be ready for it.
- 12:20Speaker 1: But I only have I just looked at my tender
- 12:21Speaker 1: I have it only got one day where it switches
- 12:23Speaker 1: out of the east for a little bit, so it'll
- 12:26Speaker 1: be interesting. I planned for that, so I've got a
- 12:29Speaker 1: lot of westerly stands. But it is nice when you
- 12:31Speaker 1: can flip flop around with those changes. And we've always
- 12:34Speaker 1: talked about it. It seems like changes and weather often
- 12:37Speaker 1: trigger a little bump, and so it'll be interesting even
- 12:40Speaker 1: though what we have is good, it's stagnant, and sometimes
- 12:44Speaker 1: that's I think it'll be less. I'm guessing whether it
- 12:47Speaker 1: will be less of an influence or this rut simply
- 12:50Speaker 1: because there's not a lot of changes, it's probably gonna be.
- 12:53Speaker 1: We've got pretty good, decent weather conditions and then it's
- 12:56Speaker 1: just when do those dolls coming to heat and being
- 12:59Speaker 1: in the right spot. So that's my guess. We'll see.
- 13:03Speaker 1: I'm not gonna try to call my shots this week.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Who the hell knows what's going to happen on my hunts,
- 13:07Speaker 1: but I'm gonna try hard and uh see what happens.
- 13:10Speaker 1: So we'll beside from two of us this week, you're
- 13:13Speaker 1: gonna hear from Darton Harwick in New York from Flat
- 13:15Speaker 1: Line White Tales, and we go to Iowa and talk
- 13:18Speaker 1: to Matt Peterson from MDL Outfitters, and then in Alabama
- 13:21Speaker 1: from Southern Ground Hunting, we talked to Parker McDonald, and
- 13:24Speaker 1: then we interviewed David Grisolt from Tagg and Brigg in Ohio. Cool, Well,
- 13:30Speaker 1: should we wrap this up, let people hear these interviews
- 13:33Speaker 1: and then get him off to the tree. Yeah, we'll
- 13:35Speaker 1: talk to you next week. Mark sounds good alright, and
- 13:38Speaker 1: joining us on the line. Next is Darton Hardwick from
- 13:40Speaker 1: Flat Line, White Tales in New York. Now Darton in
- 13:43Speaker 1: New York. What would you say the buck activities been
- 13:46Speaker 1: lately on a scale of one to ten, No, I
- 13:49Speaker 1: would say it's it's been about a five, increasing by
- 13:52Speaker 1: the day. Um. Over the last week, we've definitely seen
- 13:56Speaker 1: more daylight activity from younger bucks and them getting antsy
- 14:01Speaker 1: and ramped up um to start running. UM. I don't
- 14:05Speaker 1: think we're quite at peak activity yet, as the mature
- 14:08Speaker 1: buck still are kind of lurking in the night, um,
- 14:12Speaker 1: waiting for the time to get right. But with each
- 14:14Speaker 1: day we're getting closer to prime time. You just killed
- 14:17Speaker 1: the good buck there in New York with your bow.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Tell us about that set up and about that hunt. Yeah.
- 14:22Speaker 1: So the piece I'm hunting is about a forty acre
- 14:26Speaker 1: slice and it runs up a mountain side. UM. I'm
- 14:28Speaker 1: kind of towards the bottom of the mountain side because
- 14:31Speaker 1: of the access to the piece. Um. But basically my
- 14:35Speaker 1: stand location is set up um in the open hardwoods,
- 14:39Speaker 1: kind of between the thick bedding and food source. It's
- 14:42Speaker 1: on the other side of some railroad tracks, um and
- 14:46Speaker 1: trying to play the play the deer coming coming to
- 14:49Speaker 1: this food source. Uh. The way the hunt played out,
- 14:52Speaker 1: A dough came down off the mountain side, and uh,
- 14:56Speaker 1: nice New York bunck was right on her, pushing her,
- 14:59Speaker 1: and everything happened pretty fast. So I had a twenty
- 15:03Speaker 1: five yard poring away shot as he passed by me,
- 15:07Speaker 1: and uh put one in the in the good zone.
- 15:11Speaker 1: You said there's still a lot of standing crops in
- 15:13Speaker 1: New York. Are acorns steel factoring in your decision making
- 15:17Speaker 1: this time of year? Then? Uh, for certain pieces, this
- 15:20Speaker 1: one not so much, just because of how much crops
- 15:24Speaker 1: are on the bottom of the mountain. Um. The farmer
- 15:26Speaker 1: hasn't been in the cut any of the standing corn
- 15:29Speaker 1: or the beans that are down there yet. So I
- 15:30Speaker 1: haven't played as much a role in New York with
- 15:33Speaker 1: the acorns, but definitely in some of my other areas
- 15:35Speaker 1: acorns are playing a big factor. Are you seeing much
- 15:38Speaker 1: for signmaking in New York? And how does that factory
- 15:40Speaker 1: in due decisions sign making? The scrapes are definitely heating up.
- 15:46Speaker 1: A lot of bucks are checking those. I'm still seeing
- 15:48Speaker 1: mature bucks coming in during the night. Um, so they're
- 15:51Speaker 1: not daylight active yet, but yeah, with being late October,
- 15:57Speaker 1: it's it's prime time to focus on scrapes and pay
- 16:00Speaker 1: It's more attention to the sign. Do you and the
- 16:03Speaker 1: guys from flat Land? White Tail has used many really
- 16:05Speaker 1: aggressive tactics this time of year, like calling or blind
- 16:08Speaker 1: calling or decoying between your haunts and New York and Pennsylvania. Uh.
- 16:14Speaker 1: I would definitely say we're pretty big once it gets
- 16:17Speaker 1: to this time of year. On calling, UM, Nick's been
- 16:21Speaker 1: using calling this week, UM to try and get one
- 16:24Speaker 1: of those territorial mature books that I think something's going
- 16:28Speaker 1: on in his neck of the woods to show his face. Um.
- 16:31Speaker 1: We've had a couple of encounters this week with some
- 16:34Speaker 1: some nice dear and we just haven't had a chance
- 16:37Speaker 1: to close the deal. But with each day it's getting
- 16:39Speaker 1: closer to prime time, so more encounters should be coming
- 16:45Speaker 1: going forward. Then, in the six week or so, what
- 16:47Speaker 1: do you think that Bucket TV is going to be
- 16:48Speaker 1: on a scale of one to tend in New York.
- 16:52Speaker 1: I think we're headed towards UH eight and the nine. UM.
- 16:57Speaker 1: I'm thinking that next week, probably around November four through
- 17:01Speaker 1: the eight, it's going to be about prime time up
- 17:03Speaker 1: here in northeastern part of the United States. Our done,
- 17:07Speaker 1: Congrats on the autome do you. Good luck to you
- 17:08Speaker 1: and everyone else for flat and white tails, and thanks
- 17:10Speaker 1: for joining me. Yep, no problem, thanks guys all right
- 17:14Speaker 1: Enjoining us on the line now is Matt Peterson from
- 17:17Speaker 1: MDL Outfitters in Iowa. Now, Matt in Iowa, what would
- 17:21Speaker 1: you say the bucket activities been lately on a scale
- 17:23Speaker 1: of one to ten, bluck activity has been in an
- 17:26Speaker 1: average four and a half out of ten. So what
- 17:30Speaker 1: we've seen is your your stereotypical pre rod activity. However,
- 17:35Speaker 1: it's being influenced with our rather unique systems systematic Southern
- 17:41Speaker 1: Iowa agricultural system going on where we have a lot
- 17:44Speaker 1: of crops that are still standing in a lot of
- 17:46Speaker 1: our great areas UM. And so those areas are obviously,
- 17:50Speaker 1: you know, hiding a lot of visual sightings that we
- 17:52Speaker 1: normally would be seeing. UM. However, with the standing corn here,
- 17:57Speaker 1: love to flock to it. UM. It's colder town. The
- 18:00Speaker 1: deer coming out heading towards beans, de feed and hitting
- 18:03Speaker 1: on greens this time of year. It's everybody talks about palatability. Um.
- 18:08Speaker 1: All of our green plots are getting hit rather consistently.
- 18:12Speaker 1: But with the snow that came in here over the
- 18:14Speaker 1: last twenty four hours, in the future snow coming in
- 18:18Speaker 1: those cold attempts, we are looking at a lot of
- 18:19Speaker 1: being activity, which is somewhat unusual for this part of October.
- 18:23Speaker 1: So if normally we'll be looking at about you know,
- 18:27Speaker 1: five and a half to seven out of ten as
- 18:29Speaker 1: far as blocked activity right now, um, especially the last
- 18:32Speaker 1: year las year would have been about seven or eight,
- 18:35Speaker 1: and uh this year with this, with the crops and
- 18:40Speaker 1: other factors as well, eh D numbers possibly being lower
- 18:43Speaker 1: in certain areas, it's just it's just not as good
- 18:46Speaker 1: as what it could be. So walk me through one
- 18:49Speaker 1: of your ideal setups would look like this time of
- 18:51Speaker 1: year when the crops are in versus when the crops
- 18:54Speaker 1: are out. So were the crops are in, we play
- 18:58Speaker 1: the trail camera game because there's so much that we
- 19:01Speaker 1: can't see, you know, with the field obolusly being full
- 19:04Speaker 1: of corn um, we have to assume there's deer in it.
- 19:07Speaker 1: We like to hunt the timber edges um. You know,
- 19:10Speaker 1: travel out on a pinch, maybe a creek system um.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Pretty much you know where there is a normal timbered
- 19:17Speaker 1: or CRP betting area. We like to get between that
- 19:20Speaker 1: and the corn where we are seeing heavy deer traffic. UM.
- 19:24Speaker 1: If that's withstanding beans, obviously that does not have any
- 19:27Speaker 1: cover influence whatsoever. Um So, therefore we can rely a
- 19:32Speaker 1: little bit more on those trails, those funnels, those pinch points.
- 19:36Speaker 1: Said this time of year, catch some big deer coming
- 19:38Speaker 1: to check for dose out the food source in the evening.
- 19:41Speaker 1: Um so, and I should say that it's all evening
- 19:44Speaker 1: sets right now, and there's no there's no one benefits
- 19:46Speaker 1: for us to get into the sand in the morning,
- 19:49Speaker 1: um especially one of our better stands. We save those
- 19:53Speaker 1: for the upcoming week. Um. Now invert now versus the
- 19:56Speaker 1: crops are out. Now, there's a lot of food on
- 19:58Speaker 1: the ground. There's a lot of stubble left over from
- 20:00Speaker 1: the harvest. Um, whether they be corner beans. Every neighborhood
- 20:03Speaker 1: is different, every farm is different with different variety of
- 20:06Speaker 1: of seed. So we have sometimes we have round up
- 20:09Speaker 1: ready beans. Sometimes we have the post liberty variety where
- 20:13Speaker 1: deer have they do have a taste for different different
- 20:17Speaker 1: types of corn and beans. We've see deer absolutely avoid corn,
- 20:22Speaker 1: corn and beans that you know, they just don't like
- 20:24Speaker 1: taste off and they'll go right next door to you
- 20:26Speaker 1: know what looks to us as it seem seem kind
- 20:28Speaker 1: of soybean. But they're all over there um for no
- 20:31Speaker 1: other reason than taste. UM. So we with the crops out,
- 20:36Speaker 1: we have to rely a lot more so on our
- 20:39Speaker 1: trail cameras and our visual scouting UM to figure out
- 20:42Speaker 1: a set up. So setups don't necessarily change because we
- 20:45Speaker 1: kind of have a wide variety of setups UM, but
- 20:49Speaker 1: the approach is a little bit different. And how we're
- 20:51Speaker 1: finding with deer and choosing which of the setups to
- 20:53Speaker 1: go to. What are you seeing for signmaking right now?
- 20:56Speaker 1: And how does that influence your decisions and making a
- 20:59Speaker 1: set up right now? Over the last I'll go back
- 21:02Speaker 1: in the last ten days, UM. Scrape activity um as
- 21:07Speaker 1: well as rubs are picking up on all of my
- 21:09Speaker 1: farms in the last you know, five to seven days. UM.
- 21:13Speaker 1: Going about ten days back, we were looking at a
- 21:17Speaker 1: one seemed like slow activity. They were just weren't scrapes
- 21:20Speaker 1: firing like normal, even though we had the good weather. UM,
- 21:24Speaker 1: we were just seemed a little bit behind the schedule. UM.
- 21:29Speaker 1: But here in the last week, scrapes have fired up
- 21:32Speaker 1: like crazy. Rubs are picking up all over the place.
- 21:35Speaker 1: And that's we're going from the small little field that
- 21:37Speaker 1: drugs that are just periodic um all the way up
- 21:40Speaker 1: to your you know, your big community rubs that are
- 21:43Speaker 1: deep in noptember, which I tried to avoid looking at,
- 21:46Speaker 1: even though they're pretty cool cool, they're pretty cool to find. UM.
- 21:50Speaker 1: You don't need to invade on any better areas this
- 21:52Speaker 1: time of year. But the sign is all picked up.
- 21:55Speaker 1: And that's that's not just talking about trails and scrapes
- 21:58Speaker 1: and rubs. It's all talking about trail can't activity. UM.
- 22:01Speaker 1: A lot of the activity that I'm seeing on camera
- 22:05Speaker 1: is still nocturnal, especially with our mature deer. UM. I've
- 22:11Speaker 1: only had two or three mature bucks actually out in daylight. UM.
- 22:16Speaker 1: I run cameras pretty much where we're hunting, right. I
- 22:18Speaker 1: have no benefit to run a camera in the betting area.
- 22:21Speaker 1: I'll never go back there um to hunt, order to scout,
- 22:25Speaker 1: but we we want to know when the deer are
- 22:27Speaker 1: there where we're hunting, so we're checking that. And the
- 22:29Speaker 1: activity is just picking up. And now I can see
- 22:32Speaker 1: the light at the end of the tunnel and that
- 22:34Speaker 1: with that light being the run it is, it is
- 22:36Speaker 1: coming going forward. Then in the six week or so,
- 22:39Speaker 1: what do you think that buck activity is going to
- 22:41Speaker 1: be on a scale of one to tend in Iowa,
- 22:45Speaker 1: I would expect here over the next week it would
- 22:48Speaker 1: jump up to possibly seven or eight out of ten.
- 22:52Speaker 1: Given the weather stays good, crops continue to get harvested
- 22:55Speaker 1: occasionally here and there. Um. The only reason that would
- 22:58Speaker 1: stay lower is if the you're staying into the crops
- 23:01Speaker 1: and those standing cords and remain hidden. All right, Matt, Well,
- 23:04Speaker 1: good luck to you and your clients at MTL Outfitters.
- 23:07Speaker 1: Thanks for joining me, all right, Thanks, Man's have a
- 23:10Speaker 1: good one alright. Enjoining us on the line. Next is
- 23:13Speaker 1: Parker McDonald from Southern Ground Hunting in Alabama. Now, Parker
- 23:17Speaker 1: in Alabama, what would you say the buck activities ben
- 23:20Speaker 1: lately on a scale of one to ten, Yeah, I
- 23:23Speaker 1: would say probably right now, it's gonna be about a
- 23:28Speaker 1: about a five. Um where I'm at and in a
- 23:32Speaker 1: lot of the state I haven't haven't seen just an
- 23:34Speaker 1: overwhelming amount of um, big mature bucks being killed. There
- 23:39Speaker 1: have been a few, but just in my experience so far,
- 23:43Speaker 1: up scene, quite a few young bucks out on the
- 23:46Speaker 1: feet and feeding on achins and stuff. Um. And then
- 23:49Speaker 1: of course I had a I had a good encounter
- 23:51Speaker 1: with a buck I killed last week, a mature buck
- 23:55Speaker 1: on Alabama public plan And a lot of it was
- 23:59Speaker 1: because I was I got right in between his his
- 24:02Speaker 1: food and bedding. But he was definitely on his feet
- 24:05Speaker 1: in daylight hours. And so I would say five because
- 24:08Speaker 1: it's not you know, it's not the absolute worst, but um,
- 24:11Speaker 1: I think it's only going to go up from here.
- 24:13Speaker 1: Like other Southern states, Alabama has a variety of stages
- 24:17Speaker 1: of the rut going on at all times in the fall.
- 24:19Speaker 1: Can you walk us through what different do your groups
- 24:22Speaker 1: and what different phases that route we currently have in Alabama. Yeah,
- 24:27Speaker 1: So in Alabama on a lot of a lot of
- 24:30Speaker 1: pieces pretty close to where I hunt, do you have
- 24:34Speaker 1: a strain of deer that was brought in from Michigan
- 24:37Speaker 1: years ago, and so your experience with those, dear, you'll
- 24:42Speaker 1: experience a rut that is typical to probably the rest
- 24:45Speaker 1: of the United States, really that early November UM type rut.
- 24:49Speaker 1: And so you could be out in the woods, you
- 24:51Speaker 1: know right now, NBC and some UM good pre run activity,
- 24:56Speaker 1: and probably in the next week or so, you might
- 24:59Speaker 1: you know, you might see bucks chasing does like crazy. Um.
- 25:03Speaker 1: But then in that same block of timber, you could
- 25:05Speaker 1: have a buck that's not even close to being in
- 25:07Speaker 1: the rut at all. He's still up a couple of
- 25:10Speaker 1: months to a month away from even being close to
- 25:13Speaker 1: starting the pre rut. UM. So it really is all
- 25:17Speaker 1: over the place, UM, where I hunt, And then you
- 25:20Speaker 1: can go put some parts of the state, UM, Southern Alabama.
- 25:24Speaker 1: There's a lot of parts of the state out there
- 25:26Speaker 1: where they won't even run until February. UM. And then
- 25:29Speaker 1: some parts of northern Alabama they're not gonna you're gonna
- 25:32Speaker 1: have RUD activity in in February. So it really is
- 25:35Speaker 1: truly just dependent on where you're at. UM. I would say,
- 25:39Speaker 1: for where I'm at the majority of the time, UM,
- 25:42Speaker 1: right now, you're still going to experience a lot of
- 25:45Speaker 1: that bet the food pattern. UM, you're not gonna see
- 25:47Speaker 1: a ton of rud activity. Of course unless you see
- 25:50Speaker 1: those UM you get haven't encounter with one of those
- 25:53Speaker 1: Michigan strained deer. UM. But like the buck I killed
- 25:57Speaker 1: the other day, he wasn't he wasn't even anywhere close
- 25:59Speaker 1: to it. So, um Man, this cold front though that
- 26:03Speaker 1: is about to hit. I think it's hitting a lot
- 26:05Speaker 1: of the United States. I know it's hitting a lot
- 26:07Speaker 1: of the South. And in the next in the next
- 26:09Speaker 1: couple of weeks, man, it's gonna be um probably the
- 26:14Speaker 1: cold front that really gets the deer on the scene.
- 26:17Speaker 1: I think I think you're probably gonna start seeing a
- 26:19Speaker 1: little bit more movement and that number, you know, it
- 26:21Speaker 1: could it could go up drastically here this this upcoming
- 26:24Speaker 1: weekend for sure. So how do you balance your aggressiveness
- 26:27Speaker 1: in an area like that where you have so many
- 26:29Speaker 1: different phases of the ruck going on at once. For
- 26:33Speaker 1: my style, UM, you know, I'm using I'm using a
- 26:36Speaker 1: lot of water access pretty much. Um all the time
- 26:39Speaker 1: is what I use. And UM, I kind of stay aggressive,
- 26:44Speaker 1: you know. It's just really depends for me, Like during
- 26:48Speaker 1: the rut that early early December is the rut that
- 26:51Speaker 1: I really try to key on, key in on in
- 26:53Speaker 1: my area. And I'm gonna be as aggressive as I
- 26:56Speaker 1: can be. I'm gonna go into um a lot of
- 26:59Speaker 1: the areas where I know is is good dough betting,
- 27:02Speaker 1: and I'm going to get really, really close to that.
- 27:04Speaker 1: And that's all that's since I started doing this, That's
- 27:07Speaker 1: been the most um beneficial thing I've done, is that
- 27:11Speaker 1: right there in the middle of that, and I'll get
- 27:12Speaker 1: as close to those dough betting areas that I possibly can.
- 27:16Speaker 1: Now what I'm trying to do is, um, I'm not
- 27:19Speaker 1: getting I'm not proud of betting too much of these bucks. UM.
- 27:24Speaker 1: I am trying to get in between the beds and
- 27:28Speaker 1: the food and UM, A lot of the bed A
- 27:32Speaker 1: lot of the betting, I know, is there some of
- 27:33Speaker 1: the betting I don't know is there. I use this
- 27:36Speaker 1: time of year when um, you know, the majority of
- 27:38Speaker 1: the area that I'm hunting isn't so much, isn't so
- 27:42Speaker 1: close to the rut Um. I'm going to use a
- 27:44Speaker 1: lot of this time to go in really aggressive to
- 27:48Speaker 1: areas that I've never been into before. So just I
- 27:50Speaker 1: use a lot of it for going and blind into
- 27:52Speaker 1: brand new areas. You just killed that buck doing water access.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Is that a tactic that you'll use year round? Is
- 27:59Speaker 1: that something that you think it can be applied to
- 28:00Speaker 1: all of the others days? Yeah, So, you know, since
- 28:04Speaker 1: I started doing this, I would say my encounters and
- 28:08Speaker 1: deer have gone up drastically, like it's not even it's
- 28:11Speaker 1: not even close really to what I was experiencing before.
- 28:15Speaker 1: And uh, and a lot of that is because I'm
- 28:17Speaker 1: going into areas where I mean, the majority of the time,
- 28:21Speaker 1: there's nobody in there. I don't think I've ever run
- 28:23Speaker 1: into a single person, um, you know, and especially here
- 28:28Speaker 1: in Alabama, I haven't run into a whole lot of
- 28:30Speaker 1: people that are doing the same thing. And uh, if
- 28:32Speaker 1: I do run into anybody, it's usually because they're coming
- 28:36Speaker 1: off of private land and they've been hunting that same
- 28:39Speaker 1: piece of public land their whole life, you know, because
- 28:41Speaker 1: it's close to their property or whatever. Um. But you know,
- 28:45Speaker 1: I have a whole lot of encounters with deer. I
- 28:47Speaker 1: get to, um see a lot more dear on these
- 28:51Speaker 1: these pieces of property than a lot of people in
- 28:54Speaker 1: the South. UM. And I think that's just getting back
- 28:57Speaker 1: far into those places where people aren't going into very often.
- 29:01Speaker 1: What food sources are you focused on this time of
- 29:04Speaker 1: year in Alabama? So right now, um, obviously the aprons
- 29:09Speaker 1: are falling like crazy, and we've had a really good
- 29:13Speaker 1: year here everywhere I've been, um here in Alabama and Tennessee, um.
- 29:18Speaker 1: Even in Kentucky I hunted there and everywhere I've been
- 29:21Speaker 1: it seems like there's a really solid agin crop and
- 29:24Speaker 1: so that that that really makes it difficult to um
- 29:28Speaker 1: find where the deer are actually hitting because they got
- 29:31Speaker 1: aprons all over the place. UM. One of the things
- 29:33Speaker 1: I really try to key in on is um going
- 29:36Speaker 1: into a place that has those white oats UM that's
- 29:39Speaker 1: dropping a lot of aprons, but also has a lot
- 29:42Speaker 1: of the native brows that is um that that deer
- 29:45Speaker 1: really tend to like. So that with this buck that
- 29:49Speaker 1: I killed last week, I really keyed in on a
- 29:51Speaker 1: transition area that had a pine ticket and then they
- 29:55Speaker 1: had a UM a couple of year old clear cut
- 29:58Speaker 1: and those were on the private land, and then on
- 30:02Speaker 1: the public land there was there was a lot of
- 30:04Speaker 1: acrons falling, and so I figured in that clear cut, UM,
- 30:07Speaker 1: there's gonna be a ton of brows out here. Those
- 30:10Speaker 1: are basically just like a big thick food plot that
- 30:14Speaker 1: are just it's just covered with all types of food
- 30:16Speaker 1: for deer. And so if you can be close to
- 30:18Speaker 1: one of those and a lot of times that ticket
- 30:21Speaker 1: for this time of the season going forward. Then in
- 30:24Speaker 1: the sext week or so, what do you think that
- 30:26Speaker 1: Bucket TV is going to be on a scale of
- 30:28Speaker 1: one to ten in Alabama? And I think this cold
- 30:31Speaker 1: front that's pushing through here, um this weekend is going
- 30:34Speaker 1: to be uh. I really think it's gonna get deer
- 30:38Speaker 1: on their feet. Um, that's one thing I've noticed. The
- 30:40Speaker 1: most deer activity I've seen that this point has been
- 30:43Speaker 1: in those those little cold fronts that come through. You know,
- 30:46Speaker 1: that drops the tent down to forty or so degrees
- 30:49Speaker 1: and the deer activity gets really high. And so this
- 30:53Speaker 1: weekend um is supposed to get down into the thirties.
- 30:57Speaker 1: And I think you're gonna see a lot more people
- 30:59Speaker 1: down here in the South, um posting on on social media,
- 31:03Speaker 1: You're gonna see a whole lot more big bucks being killed.
- 31:07Speaker 1: So I'm gonna say it's probably gonna go up to
- 31:09Speaker 1: maybe even a seven or an eight. All Right, Parker Will,
- 31:12Speaker 1: congrats on that awesome Alabama public land buck. Thanks for
- 31:16Speaker 1: joining me. Thanks Spencer alright in joining us on the line.
- 31:19Speaker 1: Next is David g Rizzo from teen Tagg and Brigg
- 31:22Speaker 1: in Ohio. Now, David in Ohio, what would you say
- 31:25Speaker 1: the buck activity is been lately on a scale of
- 31:27Speaker 1: one to ten, I think the buck activity has been
- 31:31Speaker 1: about a six. And the reason I say that we're
- 31:34Speaker 1: seeing a lot of small box cruising daylight hours and
- 31:38Speaker 1: seeing some new box pop up on our trail cameras,
- 31:42Speaker 1: but the mature buck activity, at least where we're at,
- 31:45Speaker 1: we have not seen you know, daylight active yet. It's
- 31:48Speaker 1: been close, um, but we haven't seen a ton of
- 31:51Speaker 1: mature buck activity yet. Although they are working scrapes at night,
- 31:55Speaker 1: it seems like they're branching out throughout the last couple
- 31:57Speaker 1: of months on our trail cameras box that we've never
- 31:59Speaker 1: seen before or um and and the younger deer are
- 32:02Speaker 1: moving in daylight. It just doesn't seem like that mature
- 32:05Speaker 1: buck activity has you know, really gone out into like
- 32:08Speaker 1: an all out seeking phase where they're moving you know,
- 32:11Speaker 1: a lot during the daylight hours these last few days
- 32:14Speaker 1: of October. Do acorns still factor into your decision making
- 32:17Speaker 1: when you're making a set up? Yeah, I I I
- 32:20Speaker 1: was actually set up tonight on an acorn flat and
- 32:24Speaker 1: I had three does come in and they were literally
- 32:26Speaker 1: nose to the ground feeding the whole time. I mean
- 32:29Speaker 1: I was, I was actually pretty surprised that there wasn't
- 32:32Speaker 1: a buck with them or at least coming into check. Um.
- 32:36Speaker 1: So you know, I think the acorns definitely still play
- 32:38Speaker 1: a factor, you know, at least case in point tonight
- 32:41Speaker 1: where the does were feeding. I mean, I really wouldn't
- 32:43Speaker 1: have wanted to be anywhere else it just the buck
- 32:46Speaker 1: wasn't in the area tonight. What are you doing this
- 32:48Speaker 1: time of year when you find some fresh signmaking and
- 32:51Speaker 1: at what point do you kind of start to ignore
- 32:53Speaker 1: that and move off the rubs and scrapes. I think
- 32:57Speaker 1: right now, at least for us in Ohio, is just
- 33:01Speaker 1: is peak time where they are just hammering the scrapes.
- 33:04Speaker 1: I mean, yesterday I said, I I watched three bucks,
- 33:07Speaker 1: three different bucks, clear the same scrape. One buck in particular,
- 33:11Speaker 1: cleared it, went back and cleared it three different times,
- 33:15Speaker 1: and they were all kind of chasing each other around,
- 33:17Speaker 1: just trying to figure each other out. So I think
- 33:20Speaker 1: the scrape activity right now is is peaking, and especially
- 33:24Speaker 1: over the next couple of days. I mean that's where
- 33:27Speaker 1: really we're gonna be honing in a lot of our
- 33:29Speaker 1: time and energy is hunting, you know, on scrapes or
- 33:32Speaker 1: at least somewhere close you know paths leading up to scrapes,
- 33:36Speaker 1: because I really believe that these mature bucks are gonna
- 33:39Speaker 1: get on their feet. We got a cold front coming
- 33:41Speaker 1: in end of the week, and I think that's gonna
- 33:43Speaker 1: spur some activity and we're gonna get some good action,
- 33:45Speaker 1: especially scrape action. You know, by the time the week's
- 33:49Speaker 1: over with, When you're hunting scrapes, do you have a
- 33:52Speaker 1: preference for morning versus evening. I'm hunting them any time
- 33:55Speaker 1: of day. I prefer the morning time. And you know,
- 33:58Speaker 1: so we literally just started and hunting mornings pretty hard
- 34:01Speaker 1: over the last couple of days. UM. And it's and
- 34:04Speaker 1: it's paid off for us, and I'll be in the
- 34:05Speaker 1: woods again tomorrow morning. To UM. It seems like a
- 34:10Speaker 1: lot of the buck activity that we're observing on trail
- 34:13Speaker 1: cameras that we you know, that we're not seeing when
- 34:15Speaker 1: we're sitting is starting to switch, you know, to that
- 34:18Speaker 1: morning movement. I mean case in point, this morning, a
- 34:21Speaker 1: new buck popped up on one of our trail cameras,
- 34:25Speaker 1: one of our cell cameras that we've never seen before
- 34:27Speaker 1: at ten thirty UM. So, you know, extending those sits,
- 34:31Speaker 1: I think a little bit farther in the end of
- 34:33Speaker 1: the end of the late morning. I think is uh
- 34:36Speaker 1: is absolutely necessary because you just never know when when
- 34:39Speaker 1: he could take a walk. It sounds like most of
- 34:41Speaker 1: your cameras are facing scrapes right now. How does that
- 34:44Speaker 1: change when we get into the road. Do they stay there?
- 34:46Speaker 1: Do you move them to someplace else? No? We typically
- 34:50Speaker 1: keep them, you know, we just try to keep them
- 34:52Speaker 1: on any active scrapes. Honestly, once once like the peak
- 34:56Speaker 1: chasing comes around, not that the trail cameras are irrelevant,
- 35:00Speaker 1: but it's just time to just go log a lot
- 35:03Speaker 1: of hours into the woods and you just I mean,
- 35:05Speaker 1: the deer become kind of unpatternable at that point, at
- 35:08Speaker 1: least in my opinion. So we which we tend to
- 35:12Speaker 1: keep the keep the cameras on the scrapes that are
- 35:15Speaker 1: active because you just never know what new bucks are
- 35:18Speaker 1: gonna move into the area. Um and especially if there's
- 35:21Speaker 1: a hot doing there, if he's hitting that scrape, you know,
- 35:23Speaker 1: a couple of times, you never know, you could you
- 35:26Speaker 1: could have a day or two day window to get
- 35:28Speaker 1: in there, you know, and try and kill them. So
- 35:31Speaker 1: we keep the keep our cameras on scrapes, let them
- 35:34Speaker 1: kind of take that inventory for us when we're not
- 35:36Speaker 1: sitting directly on you know, on those main scrapes anymore,
- 35:40Speaker 1: and we just get in the woods, getting you know,
- 35:42Speaker 1: getting a timber somewhere and try and log as many
- 35:44Speaker 1: hours as we can if we can catch up to
- 35:47Speaker 1: something going forward. Then in the sex week or so,
- 35:50Speaker 1: what do you think that bucke activity is going to
- 35:52Speaker 1: be on a scale of one to ten in Ohio?
- 35:55Speaker 1: I I really think it's gonna be you know, an
- 35:57Speaker 1: eight to and eight and a half. I think, Um,
- 36:00Speaker 1: like I said, the end of this week, we got
- 36:02Speaker 1: a cold front coming in. It's been sixty degrees all week.
- 36:05Speaker 1: It'll be like that through Thursday, and then highs on
- 36:09Speaker 1: Friday go down to forty with lows in the thirties
- 36:12Speaker 1: and that continues for the next probably four to five days,
- 36:16Speaker 1: I believe. So I really think end of this week,
- 36:20Speaker 1: early next week, you know, this movement is gonna be
- 36:23Speaker 1: eight eight to an eight to and eight and a half.
- 36:26Speaker 1: The mature bucks are gonna be on their feet, and
- 36:28Speaker 1: I'm really looking forward to being in the woods. I
- 36:30Speaker 1: think this is gonna be, you know, one of the
- 36:31Speaker 1: best week just that we have throughout this year. All right, David,
- 36:36Speaker 1: good luck to you and your brother team tagging Bragg.
- 36:38Speaker 1: Thanks for joining me. Appreciate it, Spencer, And that concludes
- 36:42Speaker 1: this week's episode of rut Fresh Radio. Makes It Darton,
