Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: We welcome you back to Indianapolis, where the college basketball
- 0:08Speaker 1: season has come to an end, and where the Wolverines
- 0:11Speaker 1: of Michigan have been crowned the champions.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Sixty nine to sixty.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Three, your final score. They said they had to hold
- 0:23Speaker 1: them in that.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Kind of arrange. But still even.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Holding Michigan to sixty nine points not enough. And Jalen Rose, yes, hail.
- 0:36Speaker 2: To the victors.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Indeed, indeed had a feeling. Chris Webber might chime in
- 0:41Speaker 1: as well.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Respect in love, but oh, two guys for sure.
- 0:45Speaker 1: With that question, We welcome you back to you Inside
- 0:48Speaker 1: March Madness, presented by Lily Ernie Johnson with Bruce Pearl
- 0:52Speaker 1: and Clark Kellow, Kenny Smith and Charles Barkleys. This was
- 0:57Speaker 1: the way I guess Danny Hurley and he said earlier,
- 1:01Speaker 1: this is what we've got to do to try to
- 1:03Speaker 1: try to hang in this game with them. But still
- 1:06Speaker 1: it wasn't enough. Michigan just too much.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Yukon did everything they had to do to stay in
- 1:11Speaker 3: this basketball game. Their first shot defense against Michigan was incredible,
- 1:16Speaker 3: a season low and assists a season low on fill
- 1:18Speaker 3: goal percentage, all the things that Michigan needed to do
- 1:22Speaker 3: offensively to win the game. Yukon dominated, but on the
- 1:26Speaker 3: other end, Michigan controlled this game with.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Their own defense.
- 1:29Speaker 3: This is four straight games now that they've held their
- 1:32Speaker 3: opponents to a season low field goal percentage.
- 1:35Speaker 2: They did it with size, they did it with.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Switching, they did it with communication. You worry about what
- 1:41Speaker 3: you could control, and Michigan came into this tournament knowing
- 1:44Speaker 3: the only way they could lose if they didn't defend.
- 1:47Speaker 3: The only team Theoxels said could beat them was themselves,
- 1:51Speaker 3: and they didn't do it. They controlled the game.
- 1:52Speaker 2: With their defense.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Last four games thirty six percent field goals against thirty
- 1:58Speaker 1: two to thirty seven, and tonight thirty one percent.
- 2:03Speaker 4: There are two things I highlighted on the on the
- 2:05Speaker 4: stat sheet thirty one percent field goal defense twenty five
- 2:10Speaker 4: for twenty eight from the foul line. That's where the
- 2:13Speaker 4: game was won by the Wolf of Rings. They had
- 2:15Speaker 4: more ways to win than Yukon did.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Check you were you were almost there.
- 2:22Speaker 5: I got one right, sixty three points. Yeah, you know
- 2:26Speaker 5: they were in the range to score. But there's a
- 2:29Speaker 5: couple other things that you know, I felt noticed Yukon
- 2:33Speaker 5: didn't play without fouling, so you put people on the
- 2:36Speaker 5: line so many times.
- 2:37Speaker 2: You know, that's I call it free money.
- 2:40Speaker 5: You gave them free money and Michigan cashed in on
- 2:42Speaker 5: it because of their.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Size, their strength and athleticism.
- 2:45Speaker 5: But the one thing that really surprised me, I didn't
- 2:48Speaker 5: realize how much Michigan would challenge the Rim on your drives.
- 2:54Speaker 5: There were not there were multiple guys flying through the
- 2:58Speaker 5: air when when Yukon came to the Rim. And lastly,
- 3:02Speaker 5: you cannot go nine for thirty three. It's also because
- 3:05Speaker 5: you're you're also a little fatigued because you are running
- 3:08Speaker 5: the shot clock down a little bit. You are running
- 3:11Speaker 5: a little bit more than you typically have, and you're
- 3:13Speaker 5: not as open as you are.
- 3:15Speaker 2: So nine for.
- 3:15Speaker 5: Thirty three shooting twenty seven percent from the three point
- 3:18Speaker 5: line came from the fatigue of having to defend and
- 3:22Speaker 5: then run this shot clock down as well.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Well.
- 3:24Speaker 6: I don't know if it was fatigue. It's called Missigan
- 3:26Speaker 6: was guarding. They ass over them. Listen, the best team won.
- 3:33Speaker 6: They were the best team in I thought Arizona, well,
- 3:35Speaker 6: but that Michigan team with the best team in college
- 3:37Speaker 6: basketball all year, we've.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Seen one of the great runs.
- 3:41Speaker 6: We've seen a long time, and what impressed me about
- 3:44Speaker 6: this game They didn't play good and coach, you know
- 3:48Speaker 6: this when like they won this game defensively. The best
- 3:52Speaker 6: offense team in the tournament won this game on defense.
- 3:56Speaker 2: They didn't play well but their.
- 3:58Speaker 6: Defense, and I said that I have to will separate
- 4:00Speaker 6: this Michigan team. They can win a game defensively. That
- 4:04Speaker 6: was impressive. But they were the best team in the
- 4:06Speaker 6: country and they proved it tonight.
- 4:09Speaker 1: By the way, let me point out that Werner is
- 4:12Speaker 1: proud to provide custom design podium ladders from the net
- 4:16Speaker 1: cutting celebration Werner the official ladder of NCAA March Madness.
- 4:22Speaker 1: We were talking as this game was going on up
- 4:24Speaker 1: here on the set and we looked at it and said,
- 4:26Speaker 1: you know, if if you know, if Michigan wins the
- 4:30Speaker 1: game or if Yukon wins the game. We said, who
- 4:33Speaker 1: who's going to be the the mop the most outstanding player? Why,
- 4:37Speaker 1: in your opinion was it Elliott kdoc Well.
- 4:40Speaker 2: In the semi final game.
- 4:41Speaker 4: His aggressiveness was the difference from the start in this game.
- 4:46Speaker 4: He started fast, got saddled with the little foul toes,
- 4:49Speaker 4: but he made every key and big play and he
- 4:52Speaker 4: kept presser on the opposing team with.
- 4:54Speaker 2: His attacks to the rim.
- 4:56Speaker 4: But his timely scores I thought tonight huge because he
- 5:01Speaker 4: made some buckets when Michigan really needed him to do that.
- 5:05Speaker 3: You know, so often in big games, especially football games,
- 5:08Speaker 3: we judged the quarterback, and which ever team had the
- 5:11Speaker 3: better quarterback oftentimes wins the big game. This is back
- 5:14Speaker 3: to back games now where Elliott Cadot dominated the game.
- 5:17Speaker 3: He dominated Jaden Battley the Bradly, he dominated Silas Demery.
- 5:21Speaker 3: Quarterbacks in point guards make a huge, huge difference.
- 5:24Speaker 5: You know, it's funny, Ernie. When Elliot Gadot was in
- 5:26Speaker 5: high school, his AAU coach played for my brother and
- 5:29Speaker 5: he asked me to come watch him play.
- 5:31Speaker 2: That was the same day.
- 5:32Speaker 5: I'm walking into the gym and the Foremer Tar Hill
- 5:35Speaker 5: coach Hubert Davids walking in and we're watching Elliott play.
- 5:40Speaker 5: For the first five minutes, he didn't score one basket.
- 5:44Speaker 5: And I tell the story to the kids all the time.
- 5:46Speaker 5: And he looked at me and asked me, who's the
- 5:48Speaker 5: best player on the floor of you?
- 5:49Speaker 2: I said, GOODO. He says, hey, he's making every.
- 5:51Speaker 5: Right play and so he controlled the pace the same
- 5:54Speaker 5: way in the first game.
- 5:55Speaker 2: He controlled it.
- 5:56Speaker 5: He made every right play for Michigan, and the guy
- 5:59Speaker 5: was off that day without scoring a basket. He never
- 6:03Speaker 5: scored a basket in the first five minutes.
- 6:05Speaker 2: In the offer of a scholarship.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Let's take a look at the Capitol one rewarding performance
- 6:11Speaker 1: of this championship game, and it's the it's the paint
- 6:20Speaker 1: production of the Michigan Wolverines, a thirty six to twenty
- 6:25Speaker 1: two advantage.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Sometime I would have come.
- 6:27Speaker 5: I would have come sometime, and this threw them a
- 6:29Speaker 5: little bit off ballots.
- 6:30Speaker 2: But to go again, get into.
- 6:32Speaker 6: The strong young fellow and unlet's be a yack Sole
- 6:35Speaker 6: a lot of credit because he clearly was out there.
- 6:37Speaker 2: On one leg, didn't force anything. He didn't force anything.
- 6:40Speaker 6: You got to get into the credit for number one,
- 6:41Speaker 6: just battling, but he did not force it. And uh, listen, man,
- 6:46Speaker 6: that was an impressive game for these kids, because, like
- 6:49Speaker 6: I say.
- 6:49Speaker 2: They did not play well.
- 6:51Speaker 5: Yes, you know, actually rest your leg and get ready
- 6:53Speaker 5: for June.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Yeah draft. Can I tell you man, first round that
- 6:57Speaker 2: defense was stifling. It really was.
- 7:00Speaker 6: I mean you Kenny talked about fatigue when somebody's all
- 7:03Speaker 6: in your job for kids at home, look up, jock.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Yeah, the second half.
- 7:09Speaker 4: Their only scores came when they got there, got their
- 7:12Speaker 4: own mits. Yes, for a few possessions early in that
- 7:15Speaker 4: for a second half.
- 7:16Speaker 6: But to have a team this good offensively and defensively
- 7:20Speaker 6: says something about coach may like, hey, we're gonna play defense,
- 7:24Speaker 6: because so their offense was not there tonight, but that
- 7:27Speaker 6: he's been like that.
- 7:28Speaker 2: But their defense coming in averaging that ninety points. Again,
- 7:31Speaker 2: hands scored.
- 7:31Speaker 4: Below ninety and Connecticut did every That was a valiant effort.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Danny Hurley, who's a great day.
- 7:40Speaker 6: They played textbook But I think the one thing that
- 7:44Speaker 6: hurt them. They played a perfect first half that was
- 7:46Speaker 6: still down and so they were playing uphill, but that
- 7:50Speaker 6: defense never gave them a second to breathe.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Yeah, you know.
- 7:54Speaker 5: Also check, you know, fifty five possessions and Michigan still wins.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Typically they in the tournament.
- 8:01Speaker 5: I'm just guessing, but I would I would say they
- 8:03Speaker 5: probably around seventy possessions.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Oh yeah, so all.
- 8:05Speaker 5: Of a sudden, now you have fifteen less possessions, But
- 8:08Speaker 5: that's not that.
- 8:08Speaker 2: You have defense. That defense did step up.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Yeah, and chuck you they really were in their compression
- 8:15Speaker 1: shorts all night long.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Hey, I'm old of you. I remember.
- 8:21Speaker 7: I remember I didn't either wear a jocks trap. I'm
- 8:25Speaker 7: not going old enough. The windows.
- 8:29Speaker 2: They are, that is not a sight I want to remember.
- 8:32Speaker 2: The relentless pursuit is presented by Lily on.
- 8:37Speaker 1: The on the on the topic of defense by the
- 8:41Speaker 1: Wolverines and rim protection. How about don't get that I'm
- 8:45Speaker 1: about forty two to eight during the tournament with their
- 8:48Speaker 1: advantage in block shot.
- 8:50Speaker 4: Everybody does it is not just Marrow, I mean all
- 8:53Speaker 4: of these got the guards get in there and then
- 8:55Speaker 4: shots excise me that ma.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Rez Johnson there, what kind of party is it? Chard?
- 8:59Speaker 7: That's a block part invited, invited their about it?
- 9:04Speaker 2: That should did and it winds up sixty nine to
- 9:10Speaker 2: sixty three.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Obviously, you know late in that game had a turnover
- 9:13Speaker 1: down there and if and if you comes able to convert,
- 9:17Speaker 1: suddenly it's like a four point game. But they couldn't slete.
- 9:20Speaker 1: They just never went away. It was just never comfortable.
- 9:24Speaker 4: If Husky's hung tough from start to finish, executed the
- 9:28Speaker 4: game plan extremely well. Had they knocked down a few
- 9:32Speaker 4: more threes, it could have been in a different story,
- 9:35Speaker 4: but credit to their effort, their resilience, their connectedness.
- 9:39Speaker 2: And also the defensive missed.
- 9:40Speaker 7: Twos out though I knew there was two of them
- 9:45Speaker 7: on a court at one time. Why did the sod
- 9:47Speaker 7: just seem to plays offense one plays defense.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Oh my goodness, Oh what.
- 9:54Speaker 1: A night it was, and what a championship game for
- 9:58Speaker 1: Uh everybody thinking that Michigan was an overwhelming favorite in
- 10:03Speaker 1: this thing, Yukon showed its colors. Yukon showed why they
- 10:07Speaker 1: were in the championship game for the third time in
- 10:09Speaker 1: four years. Michigan showed why they're the best team in college.
- 10:12Speaker 6: You're right, I knew that fight, so you're really well
- 10:17Speaker 6: I had to have the words in front of me
- 10:19Speaker 6: on it.
- 10:19Speaker 2: It's like karaoke. I'm sorry I missed that one.
- 10:23Speaker 1: As Yukon and Michigan winch head to hess to forever
- 10:28Speaker 1: be the national championship k Dusty Mays, Guys, early on,
- 10:34Speaker 1: you see the Axel Lendeborg who was kind of iffy
- 10:38Speaker 1: as of yesterday but wounded up play him every minute
- 10:41Speaker 1: of the first half and led them in minutes played
- 10:43Speaker 1: in this game.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Michigan on top ninety seven. Early Elliott Pado.
- 10:49Speaker 4: He was outstanding all game long, hooping harm there, but Yukon.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Would not go away.
- 10:57Speaker 4: Alex Caraman had a team high seven team three of
- 11:00Speaker 4: them right there.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Raylan mulleins four for seventeen on the night. Who connects there?
- 11:09Speaker 1: But look at Ronnie Gale off that Michigan bench and
- 11:12Speaker 1: at the half it's Michigan thirty three to twenty nine.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Cado. You know, he gets guys in foul trouble, he
- 11:22Speaker 2: runs the show.
- 11:24Speaker 1: It's the kind of most outstanding player in the final
- 11:27Speaker 1: four kind of stuff.
- 11:28Speaker 2: And he connects for three, yeah, nineteen points.
- 11:31Speaker 4: Three of them right there for Elliott Cadou But again Yukon.
- 11:36Speaker 4: Michigan had a couple of eleven point leans. Never able
- 11:39Speaker 4: to really stretch it out because the Huskies would not
- 11:43Speaker 4: go away. Very few fast break opportunities, but one right
- 11:49Speaker 4: here and.
- 11:50Speaker 1: A die Maha cashes in, much to the chagrine of
- 11:55Speaker 1: Danny Hurley.
- 11:56Speaker 2: On this win.
- 11:57Speaker 4: Excellent pass ahead by Cadou, in by Lindeborg.
- 12:01Speaker 2: He was to your points, Tuck.
- 12:03Speaker 4: The fact that he played as long as he did,
- 12:06Speaker 4: as hard as he did it maybe seventy percent.
- 12:10Speaker 2: It was impressive. They had cut it to sixty two
- 12:12Speaker 2: to fifty six. Drey McKinney.
- 12:16Speaker 5: That was a huge play because they almost stole it two.
- 12:18Speaker 4: Times, because that's exactly right Luther Bowin and the back three,
- 12:24Speaker 4: and it's still not over solo ball.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Let's see.
- 12:28Speaker 5: I thought they could have got it too a quick
- 12:30Speaker 5: twos kept in it, but I think roks Earley said, no,
- 12:32Speaker 5: we're going to get these three, and then even if
- 12:34Speaker 5: they made those three those, we still have us out
- 12:36Speaker 5: to win.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Those guys had a special relationship McCurley and Caravan. They
- 12:42Speaker 1: watch it end tonight with the chance for their third
- 12:45Speaker 1: title in four years, sixty nine sixty three.
- 12:49Speaker 2: It's the Wolverines for the.
- 12:51Speaker 1: First time since nineteen eighty nine claiming the national championship,
- 12:57Speaker 1: and they do it by six. After the game, Tracy
- 13:02Speaker 1: Wolfson with Danny Hurley.
- 13:07Speaker 8: Brought you guys, mucked it up, You played it on
- 13:10Speaker 8: your terms.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Just was not enough.
- 13:12Speaker 8: What was the difference down the stretch there?
- 13:14Speaker 9: I just thought that, you know, the two fouls on
- 13:16Speaker 9: those three guys in the first half, I thought we
- 13:18Speaker 9: had a real good chance to go into the lead.
- 13:21Speaker 9: Going to the half with the lead, but having Silas
- 13:23Speaker 9: Tarris and solo ball. With those two fouls, you know,
- 13:26Speaker 9: just really you know, put us down at the half,
- 13:28Speaker 9: and then we just had to make more shots. You know,
- 13:31Speaker 9: we had great opportunities. I thought from three, you know,
- 13:36Speaker 9: if we make three or four more, you know, we
- 13:38Speaker 9: you know, we've got a great chance to win it.
- 13:41Speaker 9: But I mean, how do you you know, how are
- 13:43Speaker 9: you disappointed at all in your group? These guys had
- 13:45Speaker 9: twenty two offensive rebounds versus that group of monstars out there.
- 13:49Speaker 8: So proud of the guys you talk about this group,
- 13:52Speaker 8: and I know it was probably extremely hard in there,
- 13:55Speaker 8: especially for Alex Caraban and the seniors. What did you
- 13:58Speaker 8: say to him in this Yeah, you.
- 14:01Speaker 9: Know, it's uh, you know, it's complicated because everyone's crushed.
- 14:05Speaker 9: You know, we came here to be out there doing
- 14:09Speaker 9: what those guys are doing right now. But uh, you know,
- 14:12Speaker 9: just how resilient this team is. This team, you know,
- 14:14Speaker 9: we're not going to walk away as national champions, but
- 14:16Speaker 9: we're going to walk away as a team that is
- 14:19Speaker 9: one of the best teams that that one of the
- 14:21Speaker 9: best seasons and is given the fans at Yukon. You know,
- 14:24Speaker 9: one of the best seasons we've been playing basketball. At
- 14:26Speaker 9: Yukon since nineteen oh one. Some just told me so,
- 14:30Speaker 9: you know, for one hundred and twenty years, this has
- 14:31Speaker 9: been one of our best seasons. Unfortunately for us, you know,
- 14:36Speaker 9: we we we just get to watch. Is not the rings.
- 14:38Speaker 8: I appreciate that time, thank you.
- 14:40Speaker 2: It's I'm glad it.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Ends for Danny Hurley and Yukon with a thirty four.
- 14:45Speaker 1: And the record is Michigan cuts down the nets and
- 14:49Speaker 1: this is built better.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Body armor when they hit it, when they came down
- 14:55Speaker 2: to hit.
- 14:55Speaker 5: The three three point plays, Yeah, yep, a break McKinney.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Look at it.
- 15:02Speaker 6: Almost got another steal stepping back. I thought that was
- 15:05Speaker 6: a game Senate mass right there.
- 15:08Speaker 1: I think that was the they just tased Ryan.
- 15:11Speaker 2: This all game is over. I mean they almost have
- 15:17Speaker 2: two layups on that play. That's how close it was.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Pale to the victors. The Big Ten has won a
- 15:25Speaker 1: national championship in basketball, first time since Michigan State did.
- 15:29Speaker 2: It's been a pleasure working with you guys here.
- 15:31Speaker 4: Yeah, is where it happened Indianapolis in two thousand.
- 15:34Speaker 2: Coach, it's been a pleasure.
- 15:36Speaker 4: Citizen guy, you know, I love you.
- 15:42Speaker 6: I'll see you mugs a lot coming up yesterday
