- 0:26Speaker 1: moves in free agency for the Saints on Thursday. Sean
- 0:30Speaker 1: fizan Fox State, New Orleans. Good to join us for
- 0:32Speaker 1: a couple of minutes. Chop it up a man, how
- 0:33Speaker 1: are you?
- 0:34Speaker 2: What's up?
- 0:35Speaker 1: Man? How are you? I'm doing well despite the fact
- 0:38Speaker 1: that I think the Saints are gonna stink. But we
- 0:41Speaker 1: go through this anyway. But by the way, overall so far,
- 0:44Speaker 1: through four days legal tampering and then the start of
- 0:47Speaker 1: the league year, do you think the Saints are better
- 0:49Speaker 1: today than they were Monday? Worse about the same? Where
- 0:53Speaker 1: do you fall?
- 0:54Speaker 2: Probably slightly worse? Are about the same? I just dominate.
- 0:58Speaker 2: So he's a five and twelve team of season ago
- 1:00Speaker 2: and they're basically telling you without telling you that they
- 1:02Speaker 2: felt like the biggest culp or that was not the roster,
- 1:05Speaker 2: they felt like the biggest culpure with injuries and coaching staff.
- 1:07Speaker 2: So I don't know if that's the smart approach, but
- 1:11Speaker 2: when you look at what they've gained what they've lost,
- 1:14Speaker 2: I would say, at best they probably stayed the same,
- 1:17Speaker 2: maybe even slightly worse.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Okay, let's talk about what they did today and we'll
- 1:24Speaker 1: build from there. First we learned Tyron and cam Jordan
- 1:28Speaker 1: are back on rework contracts. First of all, give us
- 1:30Speaker 1: sort of the the parameters with what they've done there
- 1:33Speaker 1: with those two guys.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Well, look both of those guys. I mean, if you
- 1:37Speaker 2: look at the you can call it a rework, call
- 1:40Speaker 2: the conversion. You know, some might look at it and
- 1:42Speaker 2: stay pay cut. Basically, they stay were able to lower
- 1:45Speaker 2: their base salary, but they converted a portion of that
- 1:47Speaker 2: into uh plug incentives where they can earn some of
- 1:51Speaker 2: that money back. I know, in Tyrant's case, the actual
- 1:53Speaker 2: money he can get back could top what he was
- 1:56Speaker 2: originally going to make in his base salary, so he
- 1:58Speaker 2: agreed to that. I know he played in seventeen games
- 2:00Speaker 2: last season. I know a lot of his incentives has
- 2:02Speaker 2: a lot to do with playing time, so it seems
- 2:05Speaker 2: like that's pretty pretty magiable. I have not seen the
- 2:07Speaker 2: numbers yet on Cam Jordan, but he was obviously going
- 2:10Speaker 2: into the final year of his deal schedule to make
- 2:12Speaker 2: twelve and a half million. We all know he was
- 2:14Speaker 2: not gonna make twelve and a half million on the
- 2:16Speaker 2: open market, so he agreed to some kind of some
- 2:19Speaker 2: kind of rework deal, whatever verb you want to use,
- 2:21Speaker 2: whatever word you want to use, describe it, but it's
- 2:24Speaker 2: going to obviously help the same stalarycap picture. Just haven't
- 2:27Speaker 2: seen the numbers yet, but that's what generally happens with
- 2:30Speaker 2: veterans in the last sort of stages of their career,
- 2:33Speaker 2: especially a guy like Cam who's been spent his entire
- 2:35Speaker 2: career here. And obviously we know how how strong the
- 2:38Speaker 2: ties off of Tyren Matthew in the city of New Orleans.
- 2:41Speaker 2: So you can't get that with every player, but with
- 2:44Speaker 2: these two you certainly can't.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Do you like, bringing both these guys back even at
- 2:48Speaker 1: this stage in their career, in their thirties.
- 2:51Speaker 2: I'd be very curious to see how Cam Jordan adjusted
- 2:54Speaker 2: and these two defense remember he came in as a
- 2:55Speaker 2: three to four defensive end out of California when he
- 2:58Speaker 2: was drafted back in two thousand eleven. There's still some
- 3:03Speaker 2: if you ask these guys about the actual scheme, there's
- 3:05Speaker 2: still some you know, don't get fixated on the actual
- 3:08Speaker 2: three four four three part of this, but there are
- 3:11Speaker 2: some different responsibilities based off of what you know the
- 3:13Speaker 2: rules are with you know, with the new scheme. So
- 3:17Speaker 2: I think Cam can still be somewhat productive, and I
- 3:20Speaker 2: he's been incredibly durable throughout his career, so I think
- 3:24Speaker 2: he can give you some snaps. He's not the player
- 3:26Speaker 2: he once was. He's not gonna be the guy that's
- 3:28Speaker 2: gonna that's gonna, you know, play ninety percent of the
- 3:30Speaker 2: snaps the game, or he shouldn't be. So that's kind
- 3:33Speaker 2: of where it stands with Cam, and he's thirty six
- 3:35Speaker 2: years old. In Tyron's case, I still think Tyrn can play.
- 3:38Speaker 2: I mean, I still think Tyrn can play. He's not
- 3:41Speaker 2: quite the dynamic player he once was, but I still
- 3:43Speaker 2: think he's got enough in the tank, and I think
- 3:45Speaker 2: he's been uh with with the tandem of him and
- 3:48Speaker 2: Justin Reid, I think that can be you know you
- 3:50Speaker 2: asked me earlier, are they better? Well, I think the
- 3:52Speaker 2: one spot they are better is at State right now,
- 3:54Speaker 2: because I just you know, the Justin Reed signed to
- 3:56Speaker 2: me was an a I mean that was an a
- 3:58Speaker 2: signing for the Saints, and I think Tyron can certainly
- 4:02Speaker 2: he's scheme versatile and he's you know, he's got talent versatile.
- 4:05Speaker 2: So I think he needs you know, he's lasted a
- 4:07Speaker 2: long time and he's been amazingly durable throughout his career
- 4:10Speaker 2: with the Saints. So I think Tim still has enough
- 4:13Speaker 2: gas in.
- 4:14Speaker 1: The Saint Justin Reid on a three year deal, no
- 4:17Speaker 1: doubt an improvement talent wise. The question is do you
- 4:21Speaker 1: want to invest that type of money into a player
- 4:23Speaker 1: on a roster that probably isn't going to be competitive.
- 4:26Speaker 1: But that's, I guess, just a subjective point of view
- 4:29Speaker 1: that any of us can have. Let's talk about the
- 4:32Speaker 1: three guys they added on on Thursday. Uh an old
- 4:36Speaker 1: face come home, will clap and we know the story there.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Brother Martin l s Hu drafted by the Saints. I
- 4:42Speaker 1: was with Staley with the Chargers for a couple of seasons,
- 4:45Speaker 1: then Buffalo this year free agent, the Saints agreed to
- 4:49Speaker 1: a one year deal. Why did it make sense to
- 4:52Speaker 1: bring Will Clapp back.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Well, they need some veteran depth on that offensive line.
- 4:58Speaker 2: I don't think will starter initially he may, you know,
- 5:01Speaker 2: be a spot starter. But if you think about it,
- 5:03Speaker 2: Lucas Patrick was their starting left guard, Nick Steald the
- 5:06Speaker 2: very at some point the season started at left guard.
- 5:09Speaker 2: You know, Lucas Patrick is a free agency the very
- 5:11Speaker 2: off and on with injuries and also you know production.
- 5:14Speaker 2: So to me, you needed a versatile interior, veteran offensive lineman.
- 5:18Speaker 2: And Will Clap obviously as the guy is gonna come
- 5:20Speaker 2: in and he's one guy and I'm sure you've talked
- 5:22Speaker 2: to him before. He knows exactly who he is. So
- 5:24Speaker 2: I think he understands the situation can give you some
- 5:27Speaker 2: some production and most importantly, some depth on that offensive line,
- 5:31Speaker 2: which as we've seen, I mean, look, without the injuries
- 5:33Speaker 2: to the offensive line, how different is last year? I
- 5:35Speaker 2: mean that's that, that's the all things being equal. If
- 5:38Speaker 2: you if you just give me a healthier offensive line,
- 5:40Speaker 2: to see how different that season would have been a
- 5:42Speaker 2: season to go. So I think it's a smart move
- 5:44Speaker 2: and it's it's it's cheap. I mean, let's be real,
- 5:46Speaker 2: it's not going to be an overly expensive contract to
- 5:50Speaker 2: bring him back. So and they needed it. They needed
- 5:52Speaker 2: some They needed some depth, some veteran depth onned offensive line.
- 5:55Speaker 2: It's not always easy to find, but they were able
- 5:58Speaker 2: to find that with Will, who's had a nice made
- 6:01Speaker 2: a nice career for himself as the seventh round pick
- 6:03Speaker 2: in twenty eighteen.
- 6:04Speaker 1: No doubt, man, I Will intern with us here when
- 6:07Speaker 1: he was playing at LSU. And look, he's not one
- 6:11Speaker 1: of those guys that showed up the first day and
- 6:12Speaker 1: never showed up again. There were some of those Will.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Will had many days where he was filing an ingesting
- 6:18Speaker 1: email addresses into our database. Like he actually came into
- 6:22Speaker 1: the work.
- 6:23Speaker 2: No, No, he just showed up, did the work, did
- 6:25Speaker 2: what he was supposed to do, and went on home. Yeah.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Man, he's a great dude. I'm fired up for him.
- 6:30Speaker 1: That's the signing. The Saints need to make affordable veterans
- 6:33Speaker 1: that can be versatile. What about Jack stole the tight
- 6:35Speaker 1: end from the Giants and then Philly last year. Is
- 6:38Speaker 1: this a guy who can actually make this team shown?
- 6:41Speaker 2: Possibly, he's not the battle for it. I think he's
- 6:44Speaker 2: the guy that gives you some special teams versatility. He's
- 6:46Speaker 2: a guy when Kellen Moore, who does this, who did
- 6:49Speaker 2: this a lot with the Eagles when twelve personnel. I know,
- 6:53Speaker 2: when Dallas Goddard got hurt, he was one of the
- 6:54Speaker 2: guys that stepped up and was able to be give
- 6:57Speaker 2: him some blocking tight end snaps. He's not a nobly
- 7:00Speaker 2: productive in the passing game, and it looked like last
- 7:02Speaker 2: year when you look at some of the games from
- 7:04Speaker 2: snapcount standpoint, after we ten or eleven his offensive snaps
- 7:09Speaker 2: went down, it probably lines up with Dallas Goddards of health.
- 7:12Speaker 2: I don't really know exactly when he came back to
- 7:14Speaker 2: the lineup, but I think he's a guy that certainly
- 7:18Speaker 2: he can give you some special team snaps, can be
- 7:21Speaker 2: a blocking tight end. I don't know if it's a
- 7:23Speaker 2: guarantee he makes the roster, but at the stage of
- 7:26Speaker 2: free agency, I think it's one of those where I
- 7:28Speaker 2: add some depth to that tight end.
- 7:30Speaker 1: There's I want to ask about Isaac Yaddam because they're
- 7:32Speaker 1: bringing him back as well. Let me start there, because
- 7:35Speaker 1: I do want to ask a big picture about the
- 7:36Speaker 1: free agent signings and what this might mean for the draft.
- 7:38Speaker 1: But a thought on on bringing him back on a
- 7:41Speaker 1: three year deal.
- 7:41Speaker 2: That's yeah, that was interesting. I didn't I wasn't sing
- 7:44Speaker 2: a three year deal. He was a guy that played
- 7:46Speaker 2: well a couple of years ago when he was here,
- 7:48Speaker 2: when a couple of when the Saints were hit hard
- 7:49Speaker 2: in the secondary a couple of years ago. If you
- 7:51Speaker 2: recall with Latimore and a depot and those guys get hurt,
- 7:54Speaker 2: he played well. He's a guy that I think you
- 7:57Speaker 2: bring in another I think he kind of sense in
- 7:59Speaker 2: the theme, another veteran depth piece at a position group.
- 8:02Speaker 2: I don't know if I like him as a starter.
- 8:04Speaker 2: If you pencil him in as a starter, I think
- 8:06Speaker 2: he's probably more of a spot starter. Can be your
- 8:08Speaker 2: fourth corner, you know, if there's an injury, can fill in.
- 8:11Speaker 2: I don't know if he's a day one starter, but
- 8:13Speaker 2: I do think it's a It was a three years,
- 8:15Speaker 2: nine million, not a crazy not crazy expensive deal to sign,
- 8:20Speaker 2: and they absolutely needed to add at the cornerback position
- 8:23Speaker 2: after losing the debo and losing Marshawn Lattimore. So he's
- 8:27Speaker 2: a guy wh's got some familiarity with the city and
- 8:29Speaker 2: he played was he with Staley last year in San Francisco.
- 8:32Speaker 2: So again, another depth guy. Another guy's got a lot
- 8:36Speaker 2: of experience and he's not lost on the football field.
- 8:38Speaker 2: He understands what he's doing, and he's a guy at
- 8:40Speaker 2: the stage of his career knows his role.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Sean Fizanne Fox eight is with us, so he's on
- 8:45Speaker 1: Twitter at Sean Fazanne Fox eight. Good luck spelling Fazzanne
- 8:47Speaker 1: like moscowa all the vowels. Good luck in it right? Okay,
- 8:51Speaker 1: with all they've done in free agency, do you think
- 8:54Speaker 1: that scratches off any position group? In particular at number
- 8:58Speaker 1: nine in the draft?
- 9:00Speaker 2: The only position group that I could look at, and
- 9:02Speaker 2: I wrote this out, I was kind of updating my roster,
- 9:05Speaker 2: just filling out the depth chart today. The only first
- 9:08Speaker 2: off I think if they got, if they feel that
- 9:10Speaker 2: they got a game changer at nine or godless of position,
- 9:12Speaker 2: I think they will do it. The only position that
- 9:14Speaker 2: I look at now and say, you know what they
- 9:15Speaker 2: might be. Okay, at least a nine might be at
- 9:19Speaker 2: defensive tackle. Just because they added Godshaw, they extended Shepard,
- 9:25Speaker 2: they restructured Collins Sanders, they still have Brian Berzi, they
- 9:29Speaker 2: still have Christian Boyd from a season ago. There's another
- 9:31Speaker 2: name I'm mentioning right now. They actually have more de
- 9:33Speaker 2: tackles on their defensive end. So that would be the
- 9:37Speaker 2: only position that I would look at and say, Okay,
- 9:42Speaker 2: maybe you can if all things being equal, maybe you
- 9:44Speaker 2: can bypass that position at nine overall. But if they
- 9:47Speaker 2: have a game changer and this is a good draft
- 9:49Speaker 2: for defensive tackles that they think can come in and
- 9:52Speaker 2: w rec you know, reck stuff with a new scheme
- 9:54Speaker 2: and a new staff, then I don't think they would
- 9:56Speaker 2: completely dismiss it. But that would be the only one
- 9:58Speaker 2: that I look at and say, Okay, maybe they're fairly
- 10:01Speaker 2: stocked up right there. But other than that, I think
- 10:04Speaker 2: all all positions are open at number nine overall.
- 10:08Speaker 1: What needs immediate needs do you think remain in free
- 10:12Speaker 1: agency before they get to the draft?
- 10:16Speaker 2: To me, you need a wide receiver you don't have.
- 10:19Speaker 2: You just there's so much uncertainty in that room. Again,
- 10:23Speaker 2: just right out the depth chart, Matt, It's just like, wow,
- 10:25Speaker 2: this is this is not good. This is not that
- 10:27Speaker 2: they need some playmakers at wide receiver. You know, adding
- 10:31Speaker 2: will clap. I think it helps, but it wouldn't wouldn't
- 10:33Speaker 2: shock me if they brought in another veteran along the
- 10:35Speaker 2: offensive line, and are you are you happy at running back?
- 10:40Speaker 2: I mean you got Alvin Kamara. Kendre is such a mystery. Yeah,
- 10:44Speaker 2: Is that? Is that a position where you say we're
- 10:46Speaker 2: set or we'll just wait to the draft. I mean
- 10:48Speaker 2: I could certainly see them at least taking a look
- 10:50Speaker 2: at the veteran running back room. I you know the
- 10:53Speaker 2: safety position? Did they addressed that with Justin Reed? We
- 10:56Speaker 2: talked about the corner position. They have enough linebackers on
- 10:59Speaker 2: the roster. Those will be the ones I would I
- 11:01Speaker 2: would look at and say that you probably still need
- 11:04Speaker 2: to address those positions at some point.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Sean's got a if you go look at the top
- 11:08Speaker 1: of his Twitter, he's got a link to YouTube video
- 11:11Speaker 1: discuss a lot of this free agency stuff. So if
- 11:12Speaker 1: you want to go check it out, you can on
- 11:13Speaker 1: YouTube the Fox eight Overtime podcast. If you want to go,
- 11:16Speaker 1: subscribe and get all that info there on YouTube. If
- 11:18Speaker 1: you want more Sean's content, make sure you're following there
- 11:20Speaker 1: on Twitter as well at Sean Fazan Fox eight. So
- 11:26Speaker 1: if I ask you today over under five and a
- 11:29Speaker 1: half wins, where are you falling.
- 11:34Speaker 2: Slightly over I'm gonna probably this is probably a seven
- 11:36Speaker 2: win ball club right now, because I just think the
- 11:39Speaker 2: injury situation has no choice but to be a little
- 11:42Speaker 2: bit better. And I think just given where they're at
- 11:45Speaker 2: and given the moves they've made, and given just the
- 11:48Speaker 2: division that they play in, I could I could see
- 11:51Speaker 2: them winning six or seven games next year, which I
- 11:54Speaker 2: know is excites absolutely no one listening right now, But
- 11:57Speaker 2: I just think that that's probably where I would go
- 11:59Speaker 2: right now.
- 12:00Speaker 1: I mean, is isn't that that's the dreaded scenario. It's
- 12:03Speaker 1: like you you continue to mortgage the future for the now,
- 12:07Speaker 1: but the now looks like you're going to be very
- 12:09Speaker 1: very mid it go ahead.
- 12:12Speaker 2: They've kept they've kept the Drew Brees approach, but Drew
- 12:14Speaker 2: Brees retired four years ago. It is what it is.
- 12:16Speaker 2: So they've they've they've they've kept that same strategy and
- 12:20Speaker 2: here we are. So if I think with the moves
- 12:22Speaker 2: they've made, though, I think that they they're telling you
- 12:25Speaker 2: they they they're going to at least try to compete
- 12:27Speaker 2: in twenty twenty five.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Y'all get them on Twitter x at Sean Fizanne Fox eight. Uh,
- 12:32Speaker 1: you can catch the Fox eight overtime podcast on YouTube.
- 12:35Speaker 1: That's probably easier to spell. Just go to YouTube and
- 12:37Speaker 1: type in Fox eight overtime podcasts. That's way easier.
- 12:39Speaker 2: That's the one.
- 12:40Speaker 1: All right, I appreciate man, thanks for the time. All right,
- 12:43Speaker 1: be well.
