- 0:45Speaker 1: has a book, One Scan Save My Life, and we're
- 0:48Speaker 1: going to raise the awareness of lung cancer.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Yes, definitely. Yeah, she's she's incredible, She's incredibly inspiring, and
- 0:55Speaker 2: I think anybody who's been touched by anything like this,
- 1:01Speaker 2: there's a lot of hope in her messaging. So I'm
- 1:03Speaker 2: glad we get to speak with her, and.
- 1:04Speaker 1: We'll dive into the story and how you met because
- 1:08Speaker 1: we happen to have the Today Show on one day and.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Here and I saw her.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Yeah, this interesting and then you slid into her.
- 1:14Speaker 2: DM I did, and she answered, and your friends.
- 1:18Speaker 1: So she'll be here just after seven o'clock. And you
- 1:21Speaker 1: just informed me it's a National Underwear Day?
- 1:23Speaker 2: Yeah, are you celebrating? Did you wear something new?
- 1:25Speaker 3: Would you like to see him? No, Actually, we'll just
- 1:27Speaker 3: I can show.
- 1:28Speaker 2: You, Kristin, and I will just take your word for it.
- 1:31Speaker 3: It wouldn't be hr. I can show you the.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Top, no shows the top, the bottom. You can just
- 1:38Speaker 2: tell us how about your underwear? You don't need to see. Yeah,
- 1:42Speaker 2: if I had known, I would have worn something new
- 1:44Speaker 2: and fancy. Also National Oyster Day, which.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I have a love hate with oysters. I
- 1:51Speaker 3: don't know what it is.
- 1:53Speaker 2: You do like them? You've had them.
- 1:55Speaker 3: I see them on the plate and I don't want
- 1:57Speaker 3: to eat them.
- 1:58Speaker 1: And then if I put enough like cocktail sauce or
- 2:02Speaker 1: tarar sauce, if I.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Bury them and I kind of eat them real quick.
- 2:06Speaker 3: I kind of like them. But yeah, I know how
- 2:08Speaker 3: you are received.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Well, yeah, in general, I see, you know, my friends
- 2:12Speaker 2: get them and the way you eat them is like
- 2:15Speaker 2: they pretty much just swallow them whole, like you don't,
- 2:18Speaker 2: you know, so how do you? How are you tasting it?
- 2:22Speaker 2: It doesn't seem like it's in there for too long?
- 2:24Speaker 3: Right, And I've.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Heard that before, but it's really comes down to I
- 2:28Speaker 1: think the cocktail sauce for me, that is, And you're right,
- 2:30Speaker 1: you really it does?
- 2:32Speaker 3: You have that moment of kind of like that ocean
- 2:34Speaker 3: is it salty? Salty? Sometimes you even get like sand
- 2:38Speaker 3: in there?
- 2:39Speaker 2: Oh, like like after the oyster goes down.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Yeah, you like you're like gritting, You're like gritting on
- 2:45Speaker 3: your teeth.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Did a pearl ever come down looking for?
- 2:51Speaker 3: Hey? Real quick? Would you go eat at this restaurant?
- 2:53Speaker 1: A steakhouse in Hollywood, Florida, is launching a monthly nude
- 2:56Speaker 1: dining experience, inviting patrons to dine without clothes thing on
- 3:00Speaker 1: the first Monday of each month. The private event at
- 3:03Speaker 1: Class Soret Steakhouse costs two hundred and fifty dollars for men,
- 3:07Speaker 1: one hundred and fifty dollars for women, oh thanks, three
- 3:11Speaker 1: hundred dollars for couples. Attendees must be over eighteen. Touching
- 3:15Speaker 1: others without consent is prohibited. Guests receive a robe, towel,
- 3:20Speaker 1: a seat cover for added comfort. Thank you, and servers
- 3:24Speaker 1: remain clothed throughout the dinner.
- 3:26Speaker 2: That's not too uncomfortable.
- 3:28Speaker 1: And local officials confirm the events are legal as they
- 3:31Speaker 1: are classified as private gatherings. So Hollywood, Florida, look up
- 3:36Speaker 1: class Soret Steakhouse and uh yeah, first Monday of each
- 3:40Speaker 1: month they have nude dining.
- 3:43Speaker 2: And they're having oysters.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Who knows where they're sliding down to exactly.
- 3:47Speaker 2: I'm just not going.
- 3:48Speaker 3: We're coming right back.
- 3:50Speaker 4: More Covey and Christine and the great music variety you
- 3:52Speaker 4: expect next onlight f Them.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Okay, I need to tell you two sents.
- 3:58Speaker 4: Coffy and Christine's two pretty cool things.
- 4:02Speaker 1: So a woman in Italy won a million euro lottery prize,
- 4:06Speaker 1: but mistakenly discarded her winning ticket Christine. But she thought
- 4:10Speaker 1: it was invalid because the ticket had been deemed non
- 4:13Speaker 1: payable by a machine at a store.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Uh huh.
- 4:16Speaker 1: But then she realized it was an error, and after
- 4:19Speaker 1: realizing her era, she contacted her waste management service, which
- 4:23Speaker 1: then sifted through trash for hours to locate the ticket,
- 4:28Speaker 1: and then I mentioned why she you know, the ticket
- 4:30Speaker 1: had been deemed non payable by a machine at a store.
- 4:32Speaker 1: That's a common issue for smaller retailers, which are unable
- 4:36Speaker 1: to process large winnings.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Wow.
- 4:37Speaker 1: So after a family member recognized that the numbers matched,
- 4:40Speaker 1: the woman quickly reached out for help. And that's when
- 4:42Speaker 1: all the trash people were looking for the ticket. Yeah,
- 4:45Speaker 1: and they found it, and the woman said she will
- 4:48Speaker 1: reimburse reimburse the waste management service for its efforts.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Wow.
- 4:53Speaker 2: So oh wow, I'm so glad that they found it.
- 4:55Speaker 3: Oh my god. I just this is why, like.
- 4:58Speaker 2: I hang on to them, even if I think I
- 5:00Speaker 2: didn't win, I hang on to him forever.
- 5:02Speaker 3: They're in your glove box. Justin Gays in between the seeds.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Me too, I did too. What's your cool thing?
- 5:07Speaker 2: Well, it's about reading, which a lot of us love
- 5:10Speaker 2: to do. I find I'm not doing as much because
- 5:12Speaker 2: I'm addicted to my phone. So let me go back
- 5:14Speaker 2: to reading books. Because it turns out that you can
- 5:18Speaker 2: live up to two years longer if you simply read
- 5:23Speaker 2: as little as thirty minutes a day. There's a twenty
- 5:26Speaker 2: percent reduction immortality risk. Researchers found this boost and long
- 5:30Speaker 2: longevity only works with books, not newspapers or magazines. The
- 5:35Speaker 2: study authors suggest that deep reading holds a complex narrative
- 5:40Speaker 2: in your mind over many days. It exercises the brain
- 5:42Speaker 2: in ways that quick skimming can't match. So get into
- 5:46Speaker 2: a book again.
- 5:46Speaker 3: It's good to know, you know.
- 5:47Speaker 1: I don't read long form books, but I've been reading
- 5:50Speaker 1: more now that I have kids. Wonder if that helps.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Like when I read like a couple of chapters of
- 5:55Speaker 1: a small.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Story, where are your reading books allowed to them?
- 5:57Speaker 1: I have to have big font though on that age.
- 6:01Speaker 1: He's like, Naomi, make sure that the thoughts are big
- 6:03Speaker 1: on this book.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Here more Covey and Christine and the great music variety
- 6:08Speaker 4: you expect next on light FM, but are not.
- 6:10Speaker 1: There are certain things you should buy in August. It's
- 6:13Speaker 1: light FM Covey and Christine in the morning. In fact,
- 6:15Speaker 1: Taylor Swift has a.
- 6:16Speaker 3: Song called August's Let's get into this with.
- 6:19Speaker 5: This twisted and she talk touse you.
- 6:28Speaker 3: He's mentioning August slipping away.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Yes, right, the last days of Summer is kind of how.
- 6:33Speaker 3: It feels, only the fifth but it will fly by.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Right, it does fly by, and there are bargains to
- 6:38Speaker 2: be had in August. Covey and the shopping experts, which
- 6:43Speaker 2: they should add my name to the list at this point.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Summer clothes and shoes steep discounts right now for swimsuits, sandals, shorts,
- 6:51Speaker 2: and they say if you can wait until the end
- 6:53Speaker 2: of the month, it gets even better, so you can
- 6:56Speaker 2: refresh the summer wardrobe, get set up for next year.
- 6:59Speaker 2: The good news is office supplies back to school sales
- 7:03Speaker 2: aren't just for students, but that's going to help you.
- 7:05Speaker 2: But you can stock up on your own everyday essentials notebooks, pens, printer, paper, folders,
- 7:10Speaker 2: organizers heavily discounted right now.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Well, you mentioned a couple of days ago you were
- 7:15Speaker 3: at Staples.
- 7:16Speaker 2: And the line was like wrapped around the store, right
- 7:19Speaker 2: probably teachers, students and teachers, and the prices were really
- 7:22Speaker 2: good because I was looking around computers and electronics. So
- 7:26Speaker 2: back to school promotions make August one of the strongest
- 7:29Speaker 2: times outside the holiday season to go for laptops, tablets, headphones, headphones,
- 7:34Speaker 2: that sounds good. Other tech grills. Okay, if you don't
- 7:38Speaker 2: have a barbecue grill or you need a new one.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Now is the time because they retailers start clearing out
- 7:44Speaker 2: that inventory around Labor Day.
- 7:46Speaker 1: I thought you were talking about my teeth those two
- 7:48Speaker 1: I thought about getting grills.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, they suit you, but yeah, they're trying to
- 7:54Speaker 2: get rid of it. So they have big ticket items
- 7:57Speaker 2: with deep discounts right now. And you can still grill
- 8:00Speaker 2: for a few months, right, I mean.
- 8:02Speaker 3: I've grilled like into October, late October.
- 8:05Speaker 2: So yeah, it depends on our weather. I think we're okay.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Patio furniture, I know that stuff gets really expensive.
- 8:11Speaker 3: And it drops like a rock right about now, right.
- 8:13Speaker 2: It does, so do that. And sporting goods, I guess
- 8:17Speaker 2: because we're going to be going indoors pretty soon. Any
- 8:20Speaker 2: type of exercise equipment that gets you outdoors, that's the
- 8:23Speaker 2: stuff that's going on sale.
- 8:25Speaker 3: What not to buy? Anything that keeps you warm? Probably?
- 8:27Speaker 2: Yes, all, yes, yeh not right now?
- 8:31Speaker 1: Hey, I see our guest lingering in the hallway and Christine.
- 8:35Speaker 1: It's a very very special interview coming up. Her name
- 8:38Speaker 1: is Shira Kupperman Bowler, and she has a book called
- 8:43Speaker 1: One Scan Saved My Life. Yes, and you met her
- 8:46Speaker 1: watching her on TV.
- 8:48Speaker 2: I saw on the Today show, and I contacted her
- 8:50Speaker 2: because her story is very similar to mine. And you know,
- 8:54Speaker 2: if you will, I would really like to share, just
- 8:57Speaker 2: because I would like to shed light on this.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Right, it's more than just a public service announcement, right,
- 9:01Speaker 1: what we're about to talk about. Right, So we'll do
- 9:04Speaker 1: a short break, we'll do the headlines, maybe play a
- 9:07Speaker 1: Taylor Swift song for you.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Oh, thank you, and then we'll have our interview.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Okay, okay, thank you.
- 9:11Speaker 3: I so hope you can listen, folks, Light FM. It's
- 9:13Speaker 3: important day.
- 9:14Speaker 4: More Covey and Christine and the great music variety you
- 9:17Speaker 4: expect next on Light at.
- 9:19Speaker 1: Them six fifty eight on this hump day, August fifth,
- 9:22Speaker 1: and Christine has everything you need to know.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Good morning Christine, and.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Good morning Covey. While the presidents saying the straight of
- 9:27Speaker 2: Horror moves will be open quote very soon, or else
- 9:30Speaker 2: Iran will face consequences. This was speaking to Fox News
- 9:34Speaker 2: last night. Trump said if it doesn't open soon, Iran
- 9:36Speaker 2: is going to get quote hit very hard. And Arson's
- 9:40Speaker 2: suspect linked to one of the wildfires in Spokane, Washington,
- 9:43Speaker 2: had his first court hearing yesterday. Aaron Farinacci was arrested
- 9:48Speaker 2: by a swat team after a witness said he saw
- 9:51Speaker 2: him acting suspiciously near where the Old Trails fire began
- 9:55Speaker 2: on Saturday, and the World Health Organization says people dealing
- 9:59Speaker 2: with wildfires small folks should take precautions. They say stay indoors,
- 10:03Speaker 2: don't use fans or air conditioners that draw air from outside,
- 10:06Speaker 2: wear an N ninety five mask if you are going outside.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Some promising news in the fight against cancer, a cancer
- 10:13Speaker 2: fighting chewing gum has been developed at the University of
- 10:16Speaker 2: Pennsylvania Dental School has been found to nearly eliminate HBV
- 10:20Speaker 2: human Papalona virus and they say this raises hope for
- 10:24Speaker 2: a safer, more affordable cancer fighting therapy. Longtime New York
- 10:29Speaker 2: City news anchor Caidie Tongue has announced she is stepping
- 10:32Speaker 2: away from the news decks Picks eleven. She is a legend.
- 10:36Speaker 2: She is retiring after thirty four years with Picks eleven
- 10:40Speaker 2: plus she was at stations before that.
- 10:42Speaker 3: Thanks.
- 10:42Speaker 1: She was on Channel seven, Yes, ABC eighties, Yeah, yeah, yeah, yep.
- 10:47Speaker 2: She's been anchoring evenings and weekends with pix eleven and
- 10:51Speaker 2: is retiring at the end of the month. In sports,
- 10:54Speaker 2: the Mets beat the Guardian six to two, Yankees defeat
- 10:56Speaker 2: of the Cardinals to nothing.
- 10:57Speaker 1: All right, Christine, we'll play some tail here and then
- 11:01Speaker 1: tell everybody, if you don't mind, who's.
- 11:03Speaker 3: Coming up next.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Yes, our friend Shira is coming up next to talk
- 11:07Speaker 2: about her book One Scan Changed My Life, and if
- 11:12Speaker 2: you don't mind, going to share a very personal story
- 11:14Speaker 2: with you as well, just because I would like.
- 11:16Speaker 3: To help, because she changed your life.
- 11:18Speaker 4: Out we did more Covey and Christine and the great
- 11:21Speaker 4: music variety you expect next on Light at Them.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Okay, it's Covey and Christine and Covey. Special guest that
- 11:28Speaker 2: i'd like to introduce today someone that I saw on
- 11:31Speaker 2: TV on the Today Show. Shia Copperman Bowler is with us,
- 11:36Speaker 2: and Shira was on the Today Show and she's written
- 11:38Speaker 2: a book called One Scan Saved My Life, How one
- 11:42Speaker 2: woman's story will change the way we detect lung cancer.
- 11:46Speaker 2: When she was on the screen saw me, I went
- 11:49Speaker 2: running for the volume, yep, because I have yet to
- 11:52Speaker 2: see anyone come out with my story, a story that
- 11:56Speaker 2: I can relate to, which I will get into. First,
- 12:00Speaker 2: I want to introduce Shira. Shira, thank you so much
- 12:02Speaker 2: for being here.
- 12:02Speaker 5: Hi, Christine, thank you for having me and Kubby. I mean,
- 12:06Speaker 5: I was just speaking to my colleagues about it this morning.
- 12:09Speaker 5: Today's really emotional for me, and I've spoken to a
- 12:12Speaker 5: lot of different people, but finding a fellow survivor and
- 12:16Speaker 5: thriver and friend through all this who's ready to share
- 12:19Speaker 5: their story touches me more than I thought it would,
- 12:23Speaker 5: and touches me more than I ever imagined it would.
- 12:27Speaker 5: I just think it's so special to be here. So
- 12:29Speaker 5: thank you so much for having me.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Oh, Shira, thank you, and Cubby, thank you so much.
- 12:34Speaker 2: You and producer Kristen have definitely made this a safe space,
- 12:38Speaker 2: a supportive space. So a year ago, I was diagnosed
- 12:42Speaker 2: with the lung cancer the same that you had, Shira,
- 12:45Speaker 2: and I took some time away from work and it
- 12:48Speaker 2: was hard and it was scary. But I'm not here
- 12:51Speaker 2: to worry anyone. I know the world is rough, it's
- 12:55Speaker 2: stressful out there. I don't want to add to stress.
- 12:58Speaker 2: I want you to know them, Okay. But I did
- 13:00Speaker 2: have this experience and it did feel like it came
- 13:03Speaker 2: out of left field because it seems that it's happening
- 13:07Speaker 2: to a lot of people who Sorry, I.
- 13:12Speaker 3: Know it's tough. You're doing great though, You're doing great.
- 13:15Speaker 2: So, Shira, I was really surprised at my diagnosis, as
- 13:18Speaker 2: I know you were. I think many times lung cancer
- 13:23Speaker 2: is associated with people who were at high risk, maybe
- 13:26Speaker 2: because they're smokers, or working conditions or a certain lifestyle.
- 13:31Speaker 2: You and I did not have those factors going on.
- 13:34Speaker 2: You're right.
- 13:35Speaker 5: When the doctor told me that I had lung cancer,
- 13:38Speaker 5: I told him he was wrong. I told him that
- 13:41Speaker 5: it was the wrong scan, that maybe, you know, the
- 13:44Speaker 5: electronic medical records messed up and transferred it to the
- 13:47Speaker 5: wrong person.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Because you never smoked.
- 13:49Speaker 5: I've never puffed a cigarette. I don't even I not
- 13:52Speaker 5: only have never smoked, I've actually never been around secondhand smoke.
- 13:55Speaker 5: My father's a lung doctor, so my whole life I
- 13:58Speaker 5: would hold my breath if I'd see some smoking on
- 14:00Speaker 5: the street, I would run the other way. I always felt,
- 14:03Speaker 5: and my brother's the same way that if we ever
- 14:05Speaker 5: puffed a cigarette or stood near somebody who smoked, our
- 14:09Speaker 5: dad would know, and so we were scared out of
- 14:11Speaker 5: our mind. So even when I told my dad that
- 14:14Speaker 5: the doctors told me I had lung cancer, he knew
- 14:17Speaker 5: I'd never had a cigarette and he was like, what, No,
- 14:20Speaker 5: that can't be. And as it unraveled and the truth
- 14:24Speaker 5: was I did have lung cancer, he kind of said,
- 14:28Speaker 5: how did this happen? What happened? And almost jokingly, we
- 14:31Speaker 5: kind of decided maybe because he was a lung doctor,
- 14:34Speaker 5: because somebody had to get up and yell and scream
- 14:37Speaker 5: and tell people that lung cancer is killing more young
- 14:41Speaker 5: healthy women than breast cancer and ovarian cancer and colon
- 14:44Speaker 5: cancer combined. And we're not talking about it, we're not
- 14:47Speaker 5: screening for it. We think it's only for high risk
- 14:50Speaker 5: patients that smoke cigarettes, and it's not. And the problem
- 14:55Speaker 5: is is today to get the lung screening, they want
- 14:59Speaker 5: you to be over fi and smoke a packa day
- 15:01Speaker 5: for twenty years. And Christine didn't do that and I
- 15:04Speaker 5: didn't do that, and we both.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Had lung cancer.
- 15:07Speaker 5: And the reality is that they found seventy percent of
- 15:10Speaker 5: people diagnosed with lung cancer in twenty twenty five didn't
- 15:14Speaker 5: meet those guidelines. They were not over fifty and they
- 15:16Speaker 5: did not smoke a packaday for twenty years. So we
- 15:19Speaker 5: have to change it. And it's a lot of the narrative.
- 15:22Speaker 5: And so I think, so.
- 15:24Speaker 3: I'm over fifty years old.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Like, if I wanted to get checked, are they going
- 15:27Speaker 1: to be like, oh, well you don't smoke, so no, correct,
- 15:30Speaker 1: So we have to break down that door.
- 15:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Correct.
- 15:33Speaker 5: You can request to pay out a pocket and just
- 15:36Speaker 5: not put it on your insurance, but you really have
- 15:39Speaker 5: to push and work a lot with your doctor to
- 15:41Speaker 5: get that done. But correct, you can't get insurance to
- 15:45Speaker 5: cover it like they cover a mammogram or kornoscopy. So
- 15:49Speaker 5: I just think it's scary because we shouldn't have that
- 15:53Speaker 5: stigma and we shouldn't pass away from it if we're
- 15:56Speaker 5: caught early, like you Christine, and like me, we're okay, Yeah,
- 16:00Speaker 5: it's really scary. It's very emotional, but you know, they
- 16:05Speaker 5: cut out part of our lung and we're back.
- 16:08Speaker 2: Yeah, we're here, we're recovering. We're very grateful, very grateful
- 16:12Speaker 2: that it was caught so early. For me, they call
- 16:15Speaker 2: it like an incidental I have asthma, so we were
- 16:19Speaker 2: screening my lungs because I was wheezing, and then we
- 16:21Speaker 2: saw these the simple way to put it as a
- 16:25Speaker 2: spot on the lung, and we said, okay, we'll follow
- 16:27Speaker 2: it for two years. And it was at the end
- 16:30Speaker 2: of two years. I was going for my very last
- 16:32Speaker 2: scan at the end of two years, and that's when
- 16:35Speaker 2: it started to change. And then once they see it change,
- 16:37Speaker 2: you can go for a pet scan a biopsy, and
- 16:40Speaker 2: that's when they determine that's got to go. And the
- 16:44Speaker 2: sooner you can move on that the better. So that's
- 16:47Speaker 2: why we feel so strongly about spreading the word and
- 16:50Speaker 2: awareness and hopefully getting screenings for people at an earlier
- 16:55Speaker 2: age and people who aren't considered at risk. Yeah, I think.
- 17:01Speaker 5: I talk a lot about it in the book that
- 17:02Speaker 5: there's other risk factors and unfortunately I haven't found my
- 17:06Speaker 5: risk factor and you haven't found yours, but there are
- 17:09Speaker 5: other ones like occupational hazards, family history. Actually, breast cancer
- 17:14Speaker 5: survivors have a twofold increase of getting lung cancer as
- 17:17Speaker 5: a primary cancer within five years, so there's other risk
- 17:21Speaker 5: factors that should be accounted for. I also think you
- 17:25Speaker 5: know you were lucky that they found it. Incidentally, a
- 17:29Speaker 5: lot of times people are nervous about those scans, and
- 17:32Speaker 5: I always try to talk to people about it, that
- 17:34Speaker 5: your skin has spots, your lungs have nodules, it's the same,
- 17:38Speaker 5: and what do we do with a dermatologist. Right, we
- 17:40Speaker 5: go back, we check the little skin spots. They're the same,
- 17:43Speaker 5: have they changed? Are they growing? Is the color different?
- 17:47Speaker 5: And that determines whether you buy up to see it.
- 17:49Speaker 5: It's the same with your lungs. So the reason they
- 17:51Speaker 5: checked you for two years was let's see what this
- 17:54Speaker 5: nodule does. If it doesn't do anything, you're fine because
- 17:57Speaker 5: your skin has freckles, you know, But it changed, and
- 18:01Speaker 5: you're really lucky that you advocated for yourself and followed
- 18:05Speaker 5: up and went and did it again, and that your
- 18:08Speaker 5: doctor saw it right right and saw that change and
- 18:11Speaker 5: made note of it. It is mostly found incidentally. I
- 18:15Speaker 5: mean I did a random scan because my husband and
- 18:17Speaker 5: I are in healthcare and we do all the random
- 18:19Speaker 5: scans and all the random you know, different tests that
- 18:22Speaker 5: are available out there. And that's why I'm here today.
- 18:26Speaker 5: That's why you're here today, because it was an incidental finding.
- 18:29Speaker 2: I feel like, you know how the narratives changed for kolonoscopies.
- 18:33Speaker 2: It used to be people over fifty, and then we
- 18:36Speaker 2: found that it was affecting younger people and now the
- 18:38Speaker 2: guidelines are forty five. So we're feeling the same about
- 18:42Speaker 2: getting a scan, you know, these for the lungs and
- 18:46Speaker 2: for your chest to maybe we have to think about
- 18:50Speaker 2: doing this not even maybe we should be doing this
- 18:53Speaker 2: at a younger age and it should be available to
- 18:56Speaker 2: more people. You know, once again we're saying that we
- 19:01Speaker 2: didn't have any of the risk factors that are usually considered.
- 19:04Speaker 2: I don't know why it's happening, but I know I
- 19:06Speaker 2: saw several surgeons and they all told me they're seeing
- 19:09Speaker 2: more and more of this, especially with women and younger women,
- 19:13Speaker 2: and we don't know why.
- 19:15Speaker 5: I think when I was laying in the hospital bed
- 19:18Speaker 5: with the chest toobe, remember how terrible that is, And
- 19:20Speaker 5: in recovery, that's when I realized. I kept thinking like
- 19:23Speaker 5: how did this happen to me? What did I do wrong?
- 19:25Speaker 5: You know, what's going on? And when I realized that
- 19:29Speaker 5: I was so lucky to catch it early and incidentally,
- 19:32Speaker 5: and that I wasn't unique, Like this diagnosis is super common,
- 19:37Speaker 5: but we're not talking about it and we're not paying
- 19:40Speaker 5: attention to it. And when I think about the scan,
- 19:42Speaker 5: like relative right, So you I've had a lot of mammograms.
- 19:45Speaker 5: I've had one kolonoscopy. They hurt in a mammogram. The
- 19:50Speaker 5: kolonoscopy is like kind of two days of work, right,
- 19:53Speaker 5: you can't.
- 19:53Speaker 2: Really everybody talks about the prep.
- 19:54Speaker 5: Yeah, prep, they put you out under, you know, it's
- 19:59Speaker 5: not like that in joyable. But the CT scan that
- 20:04Speaker 5: tests your lungs is like three minutes. You don't even
- 20:08Speaker 5: take your clothes off, lay down in and out that
- 20:10Speaker 5: you're not claustrophobic or I wasn't. I'm very claustrophobic usually,
- 20:15Speaker 5: and I just it doesn't hurt. I just found that
- 20:17Speaker 5: part really interesting. So I'm often telling friends, go with
- 20:21Speaker 5: your friend, go at your coffee break. You know, it's
- 20:23Speaker 5: not something you have to miss work. It's not something
- 20:26Speaker 5: that takes two days of prep. It's not something that's painful.
- 20:30Speaker 5: It's actually really easy. And then the other side of
- 20:34Speaker 5: it when I tell my peers to do it is
- 20:36Speaker 5: they get nervous, right, They're like, well, what if they
- 20:38Speaker 5: find something? So then I talk to them about are
- 20:42Speaker 5: you nervous when you get your mammogram or your colonoscopy. No,
- 20:45Speaker 5: you're thinking I should be fine, and if I'm not,
- 20:48Speaker 5: at least they'll catch it early. And it's the same
- 20:51Speaker 5: you should be fine, right, yes, but if you're not,
- 20:54Speaker 5: be like Christine, Yes, and catch it early.
- 20:57Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, And that's I completely understand the fear, and
- 21:01Speaker 2: I understand the fear behind any any kind of test.
- 21:05Speaker 2: We're all afraid of a diagnosis.
- 21:10Speaker 3: But we always better to get the diagnosis and not
- 21:12Speaker 3: know and it sit.
- 21:14Speaker 2: There when they can, when the doctors it can still
- 21:16Speaker 2: still help us. And yeah, surgery can help you where
- 21:19Speaker 2: treatment can help you. I think one surgeon had said
- 21:24Speaker 2: to me, because I think I went around to different
- 21:26Speaker 2: doctors because I wanted to hear you guys screwed up right,
- 21:29Speaker 2: you got the wrong test, the wrong test results, like
- 21:31Speaker 2: you said, shere. It's like, not that, that's just one.
- 21:33Speaker 2: Let's do others. And you know, one surgeon finally said
- 21:37Speaker 2: to me, you know, don't stick your head in the sand,
- 21:39Speaker 2: and like that really that stuck with me. It's like,
- 21:42Speaker 2: I can't hide from this. So he's like, whether you
- 21:44Speaker 2: do the surgery now or you do it in a
- 21:46Speaker 2: few months, you're gonna need this surgery. And he said,
- 21:50Speaker 2: if somebody told me I had a little bit of
- 21:52Speaker 2: cancer in me, I'd want it out of there as
- 21:54Speaker 2: soon as possible. So I went with that, you know,
- 21:58Speaker 2: moved very quickly. I think before I had chance to
- 22:00Speaker 2: even process what was going on. But like you said, Shira,
- 22:04Speaker 2: like you, you kind of question yourself. I did a
- 22:08Speaker 2: lot like what did I do wrong? What happened? And
- 22:13Speaker 2: again the doctors didn't have an answer for me. Once
- 22:16Speaker 2: said it was a bad sell. That's all they know
- 22:19Speaker 2: right now. They said, they're trying to look at why
- 22:22Speaker 2: this is happening to younger women, and they're suggesting, is
- 22:25Speaker 2: it something in our environment, is it makeup, is it
- 22:28Speaker 2: cleaning products, is it what we're doing for a living.
- 22:31Speaker 2: We just we really don't know. There doesn't even between
- 22:34Speaker 2: you and I have like exchange notes. We don't even
- 22:36Speaker 2: have the same kind of lifestyle, so we don't We
- 22:39Speaker 2: really don't know why this is happening. We just know
- 22:41Speaker 2: that it is.
- 22:42Speaker 5: Yeah, no, And they're trying to do different tests. In Asia,
- 22:45Speaker 5: they ran a big study because they found that the
- 22:48Speaker 5: women were getting it faster who did not smoke than
- 22:52Speaker 5: the men who did smoke, So that risk factor seemed
- 22:56Speaker 5: like it wasn't the right direction, and they thought maybe
- 23:00Speaker 5: cooking oiles. And to be honest, Christine, I don't cook,
- 23:03Speaker 5: I don't laundry, I don't get a manicure, So those
- 23:05Speaker 5: things were not on my docket for risk factors. But
- 23:09Speaker 5: they actually redid the test here in New York City
- 23:12Speaker 5: because in New York no one cooks right, and they
- 23:16Speaker 5: found the same thing. They found that the women who
- 23:19Speaker 5: weren't smoking that Asian population were still getting it at
- 23:23Speaker 5: a higher rate than the men that were.
- 23:25Speaker 2: And they don't know why.
- 23:27Speaker 5: And so they keep, you know, coming up with the hypothesis,
- 23:30Speaker 5: trying to test it, and they haven't figured it out yet. Right,
- 23:32Speaker 5: some things they know, right, if you smoke, you have
- 23:35Speaker 5: a higher risk. If you're a veteran near burn pits,
- 23:38Speaker 5: you have a higher risk. A firefighter, you know, there's
- 23:40Speaker 5: these occupational hazards, breast cancer survivor. So there are some
- 23:45Speaker 5: risk factors that they've been able to pinpoint, but for
- 23:48Speaker 5: the most part, they don't know. And so the only
- 23:50Speaker 5: answer is check your lungs. Right, let's make sure. I
- 23:54Speaker 5: think like all the profits from my book are going
- 23:58Speaker 5: to my nonprofit. It's called Cancer Doesn't Care. That's it,
- 24:00Speaker 5: Cancer doesn't Care dot com. And the reality around it
- 24:04Speaker 5: is just to pay for people's screens. Because you were
- 24:08Speaker 5: lucky that you had asthma, so they were following you.
- 24:12Speaker 5: I was lucky because I am in the healthcare world.
- 24:14Speaker 5: So I just thought it would be interesting to do
- 24:17Speaker 5: a scan and that I can afford it, and you
- 24:21Speaker 5: can afford it, and we have the right you know,
- 24:23Speaker 5: means and connections, but a lot of people don't. And
- 24:27Speaker 5: I don't think cancer cares whether you have all the
- 24:29Speaker 5: connections and the means, So, you know, why should our
- 24:32Speaker 5: system care? And so I think there are so many
- 24:37Speaker 5: great opportunities and tests out there to beat cancer and
- 24:42Speaker 5: make cancer chronic illness not something we die from, but
- 24:47Speaker 5: something we maybe die with. That you know, we need
- 24:50Speaker 5: to just pivot a little bit and we get our mammograms,
- 24:54Speaker 5: make sure we get our colonoscopies, make sure we get
- 24:56Speaker 5: our skin checked, make sure we get you know, a
- 24:59Speaker 5: ct of our lung.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Right, let's add this to our screenings to keep ourselves
- 25:03Speaker 2: safe as much as possible. I think I just wanted
- 25:07Speaker 2: to add that radon. Were they tying it into radon
- 25:10Speaker 2: being a risk? Like you should check where you're living
- 25:13Speaker 2: people who are exposed to rad on.
- 25:14Speaker 5: Maybe definitely you can get a little factor.
- 25:17Speaker 1: We have one in our Pennsylvania home. Yeah, like there's
- 25:19Speaker 1: more rad on in Pennsylvania for some.
- 25:21Speaker 2: Reason it's naturally occurring.
- 25:23Speaker 3: I never heard about it in New Jersey.
- 25:24Speaker 1: We have a home in New Jersey and a vacation
- 25:26Speaker 1: home in Pennsylvania, and they made us get a radon thing.
- 25:29Speaker 5: Yeah, you can. Certain states are better about telling you
- 25:32Speaker 5: about it. But you can go online and put your
- 25:34Speaker 5: ZIP code in and it'll tell you. But the easiest
- 25:36Speaker 5: is they're just a couple hundred dollars. You can get
- 25:38Speaker 5: a raid on detector. There's a few rate on companies
- 25:41Speaker 5: that online that'll send them to you and just hooks
- 25:44Speaker 5: up to your phone and it shows you your rate on.
- 25:46Speaker 5: Actually a lot of libraries you can check it out
- 25:48Speaker 5: like a raid on detector and.
- 25:50Speaker 2: A couple of weeks okay free.
- 25:52Speaker 5: Yeah, I would recommend like trying that and then maybe
- 25:56Speaker 5: as you get comfortable, buying one for a couple hundred dollars,
- 25:59Speaker 5: because is the rad on exposure in your house changes
- 26:02Speaker 5: dramatically with weather and time of day and time of
- 26:05Speaker 5: year for whatever reason. And then I've tested mine and
- 26:12Speaker 5: didn't not have high rate on in.
- 26:14Speaker 2: My own either.
- 26:15Speaker 5: So but I did put in a rate on mitigator
- 26:19Speaker 5: system in the house because I was so nervous after
- 26:21Speaker 5: everything that happened, and it's just like a pipe with
- 26:25Speaker 5: a fan blowing under your house. So it's not that financially,
- 26:30Speaker 5: you know, detrimental and it's really easy, but you're right,
- 26:33Speaker 5: it is another risk factor.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Right, And this is this is why it's so important.
- 26:37Speaker 2: I'm so happy that you went on television and and
- 26:39Speaker 2: that I got to meet you.
- 26:41Speaker 1: And sure, how does it feel the impact that you
- 26:45Speaker 1: played here because you affect millions of people on TV?
- 26:48Speaker 1: Right and your book you hit Christine and then Christine
- 26:51Speaker 1: is now sending the message out, so like you guys
- 26:54Speaker 1: like passing the baton.
- 26:55Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I applaud you.
- 26:57Speaker 1: Both for spreading the message, and you know, thank you
- 27:01Speaker 1: for being so supportive. Well, and I applaud you Christine
- 27:04Speaker 1: because I supported you when you wanted to keep it
- 27:06Speaker 1: a secret and it was a big decision.
- 27:08Speaker 3: For you to come out.
- 27:09Speaker 1: And I know Shira played a big part of it
- 27:11Speaker 1: too when you saw her on TV. And how do
- 27:13Speaker 1: you feel now that it's.
- 27:15Speaker 3: Out and everyone knows?
- 27:17Speaker 2: Well, like I said, and Sherral will get to you
- 27:20Speaker 2: and how you feel about your impact. But Shira was
- 27:24Speaker 2: a great example of why I felt like, Okay, I
- 27:27Speaker 2: need to speak up and help raise awareness. I wanted
- 27:31Speaker 2: to get through it again. I don't want to worry anybody,
- 27:35Speaker 2: And that was my original reason. I didn't want to
- 27:37Speaker 2: worry anybody. And I feel like we come on the
- 27:39Speaker 2: air to spread joy. We just want to be your
- 27:42Speaker 2: friend and be happy and make things better as much
- 27:45Speaker 2: as we can. Because the world has been tough and
- 27:49Speaker 2: people have a lot, They have a lot that they're
- 27:50Speaker 2: dealing with a lot of stress. I don't want to
- 27:52Speaker 2: add to that. I just want to say you are
- 27:55Speaker 2: not alone and we are here supporting you. And when
- 27:58Speaker 2: it comes to lung cancer in particular, there's just not
- 28:02Speaker 2: a lot of conversations around it at all, and I
- 28:05Speaker 2: don't see real support groups around it either, Like I
- 28:08Speaker 2: feel like, can we build a community where we're supporting
- 28:11Speaker 2: each other too, so again you don't feel so isolated
- 28:14Speaker 2: with this.
- 28:15Speaker 5: I would say lung cancer survivors is more lonely than
- 28:18Speaker 5: like a breast cancer survivor or others. So I've latched
- 28:23Speaker 5: on a lot to my breast cancer surviving friends because
- 28:25Speaker 5: you need someone to kind of share with. But in
- 28:30Speaker 5: this process, as I said at the beginning, like when
- 28:33Speaker 5: you reached out, and then last week when I got
- 28:36Speaker 5: the text that said I'm ready. I was more emotional
- 28:40Speaker 5: than I thought I would be because it's touching more people,
- 28:43Speaker 5: and it's making impact and a difference, and you know,
- 28:47Speaker 5: we need to stand up and yell from the rooftops
- 28:49Speaker 5: or the next person won't be as lucky as we are.
- 28:52Speaker 5: And I don't wish lung cancer on anyone, but I
- 28:56Speaker 5: wish that if you're going to be one of the
- 28:59Speaker 5: unlucky to have, you're one of the lucky to catch
- 29:01Speaker 5: it so early, right. I mean, for us, we have
- 29:04Speaker 5: an over ninety percent chance of survival when you catch
- 29:07Speaker 5: it early enough that you can just resect it and
- 29:09Speaker 5: it's out. But if you're later staged, when you really
- 29:14Speaker 5: have a symptom, it's really scary. It can be less
- 29:17Speaker 5: than ten percent. And it's not fair.
- 29:19Speaker 2: It's not No one in the world deserves cancer. I
- 29:23Speaker 2: don't care if you're smoking or not smoking, or what
- 29:26Speaker 2: your job is or what your lifestyle is. Would do
- 29:29Speaker 2: anything to never have cancer in this world, all of
- 29:33Speaker 2: us would. I think we've all been affected by it.
- 29:36Speaker 2: I've been on every side of it. I've had it,
- 29:38Speaker 2: I've been the caregiver. I've lost people to it. So again, Shira,
- 29:43Speaker 2: thank you because you're out there spreading the word and
- 29:45Speaker 2: doing the good work and raising awareness and helping us
- 29:49Speaker 2: to raise funds for people to get the screenings and
- 29:52Speaker 2: also for research. We'd love to see more time and
- 29:56Speaker 2: attention and research to fighting cancer and lung cancer in particular. Yeah,
- 30:00Speaker 2: you're right, Christine, you're doing it now too. Oh, I
- 30:03Speaker 2: am like kind of unofficially, you.
- 30:05Speaker 3: Guys could be a pretty fierce team.
- 30:08Speaker 2: Yes, yes, yeah, if you ever need me to, I
- 30:13Speaker 2: don't know what do we do.
- 30:14Speaker 5: We could be the blonde and the brunette. We could
- 30:16Speaker 5: run around and scream from the top tours.
- 30:18Speaker 3: Yes, exactly, I will.
- 30:19Speaker 2: Do that, exactly. I'll just like you know, I actually
- 30:24Speaker 2: copies the singer in the.
- 30:28Speaker 5: Has less hair, So you need the blonde, the brunette.
- 30:31Speaker 3: And the hair guys and the last hair.
- 30:34Speaker 2: Well, thank you both, I mean thank you, And this
- 30:36Speaker 2: is my opportunity to thank you and to thank Kristen
- 30:39Speaker 2: and Jill or Boston everyone here at iHeart for being
- 30:43Speaker 2: so so supportive and wonderful and encouraging me to speak
- 30:48Speaker 2: up today because I, you know, have been very emotional
- 30:51Speaker 2: about this. Shirah, You're incredible. You are an inspiration the
- 30:55Speaker 2: way you've shared your story, the way you live your life,
- 30:58Speaker 2: and and thank you, thank you for doing this for us,
- 31:01Speaker 2: for everyone.
- 31:02Speaker 3: We applaud you both. Let's all do it. Come onay
- 31:07Speaker 3: f Cancer.
- 31:08Speaker 4: Yes, more Cubby and Christine and a great music variety
- 31:12Speaker 4: you expect.
- 31:13Speaker 1: Next on light FM, there's something cool happening in space.
- 31:16Speaker 1: It's Light of Fmcubby, Christine, producer Kristin hanging out with you.
- 31:20Speaker 3: So what are we looking for. I don't know if
- 31:21Speaker 3: we'll see it, but we'll hear about it.
- 31:22Speaker 2: Yes, I don't know if we can see it from here, Cubby,
- 31:25Speaker 2: but yeah, a SpaceX rocket is crashing into the Moon
- 31:29Speaker 2: or has crashed.
- 31:30Speaker 3: And scientific are kind of into this right yep.
- 31:33Speaker 2: It's a multi ton Falcon nine rocket. It's been floating
- 31:36Speaker 2: around the Moon since last year and when it was
- 31:39Speaker 2: deployed to launch a lunar lander, the space junk was
- 31:44Speaker 2: projected to hit the lunar surface overnight. So maybe it happened.
- 31:48Speaker 2: We just missed it. We didn't look up. NASA says
- 31:50Speaker 2: the collision will create an impact crater on the Moon
- 31:54Speaker 2: about sixty feet wide twelve feet deep, and apparently they're
- 31:57Speaker 2: very excited about like the dust it's going to care up,
- 32:00Speaker 2: and what we can learn about the moon, like.
- 32:03Speaker 3: It's the world's most expensive leaf blower. Hey, what it is?
- 32:07Speaker 2: Well?
- 32:07Speaker 3: Got it? And I want to sneeze too. Oh the dust,
- 32:10Speaker 3: all the dust?
- 32:11Speaker 2: Who yeah, what's in that?
- 32:13Speaker 3: That is pretty cool.
- 32:13Speaker 1: I wonder what they'll see, if they can see anything,
- 32:15Speaker 1: you know, telescopes and stuff.
- 32:17Speaker 2: Or somehow collected. Are hoping to collect some of it.
- 32:19Speaker 2: I don't know exactly, but they're excited about it.
- 32:21Speaker 1: We're open to collect at least one winner here, but
- 32:24Speaker 1: we need two people to play our trivia battle one
- 32:26Speaker 1: one hundred two two two one oh six seven. What
- 32:28Speaker 1: are we playing for today, Christine?
- 32:30Speaker 2: We have got a pair of tickets to see Sebastian
- 32:32Speaker 2: Manuscalco Saturday, August fifteenth at north Well at Jones Beach Theater.
- 32:36Speaker 2: Tickets available now at ticketmaster dot com or give us
