- 0:42Speaker 1: Welcome to the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest
- 0:46Speaker 1: running weekly Philly sports podcast show in the world, twelve
- 0:49Speaker 1: years strong. We got a great show coming to you
- 0:51Speaker 1: this week, our regular show where I've got one of
- 0:54Speaker 1: my co hosts with us. We've got Len Hunsicker here, Buddy.
- 0:57Speaker 1: How are you man?
- 0:58Speaker 2: Good to see you doing good. Hopefully everybody's having a
- 1:01Speaker 2: good week out there.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Absolutely, the world of Philly sports is so very interesting
- 1:05Speaker 1: at this particular point in time, as we are closing
- 1:08Speaker 1: out September looking to October, we got a great agenda
- 1:12Speaker 1: coming your way this week as we dive into the
- 1:14Speaker 1: world of Philly sports. First, we're gonna get into the Phillies,
- 1:17Speaker 1: specifically this outfield rotation that has been working as we're
- 1:21Speaker 1: looking forward to red October and what's going to be
- 1:24Speaker 1: coming to this Phillies team during the postseason. We're then
- 1:27Speaker 1: going to get into some Philadelphia Union talk. Only a
- 1:30Speaker 1: few games left of the season and it's been quite
- 1:32Speaker 1: a season for the Philadelphia Union. Certainly going to be
- 1:35Speaker 1: getting into some Flyers talk because the preseason has started.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Hockey in the NHL right around the corner that season starting,
- 1:43Speaker 1: can't wait, and of course we're going to get into
- 1:45Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Eagles. We're gonna talk about Saquon Barkley because
- 1:49Speaker 1: he is certainly not having the type of season a
- 1:50Speaker 1: lot of us thought that he was going to have.
- 1:52Speaker 1: What does that mean for the offense? And then what
- 1:54Speaker 1: we are thrown down on the table this week, our
- 1:56Speaker 1: good friend Mark Schofield from SB Nation. He's going to
- 1:59Speaker 1: join us to get into some NFL, NFC East and
- 2:03Speaker 1: just you know, some general storylines that's going on in
- 2:06Speaker 1: professional football right now. That is going to be a great,
- 2:09Speaker 1: great discussion with Mark. So then, without any further ado,
- 2:14Speaker 1: why don't we just get into this show. I know
- 2:16Speaker 1: we usually like to get some band turned stuff going on,
- 2:18Speaker 1: but I don't want you to fall asleep right in
- 2:20Speaker 1: the middle of the show because you've been working your
- 2:22Speaker 1: tail off, buddy.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Yeah. I work four days a week, twelve hour days,
- 2:29Speaker 2: and the days that I work, I usually maybe get
- 2:32Speaker 2: three or four hours of sleep per night. So I
- 2:35Speaker 2: just got done with my work week and I've, as
- 2:38Speaker 2: I told Jeff in a text message, maybe if I'm lucky,
- 2:43Speaker 2: I've had twelve hours sleep over the past four nights combined. God,
- 2:46Speaker 2: So yeah, I'm pretty beat.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Somebody needs Betty Betty time.
- 2:52Speaker 2: I'm a freaking zombie at this point.
- 2:54Speaker 1: All right, well let's get into the show here, okay,
- 2:57Speaker 1: because Phillies are heading to the postseason, as we know,
- 3:01Speaker 1: like I mentioned Red October right around the corner here, Len.
- 3:04Speaker 1: But most interestingly enough about this team, and really this
- 3:08Speaker 1: goes again to like what people were talking about with
- 3:12Speaker 1: Rob Thompson over the past season, maybe two seasons. Oh,
- 3:15Speaker 1: the guy stinks. I cannot stand it when I hear
- 3:18Speaker 1: that or see it on social media. It's been a
- 3:21Speaker 1: little over a month since Rob Rob Thompson geez sorry,
- 3:26Speaker 1: officially declared that the Phillies were gonna use an outfield rotation.
- 3:30Speaker 1: He declared that on August twentieth, And what that actually
- 3:33Speaker 1: meant was that the lines of the team were no
- 3:37Speaker 1: longer you know, going to be starting. They weren't gonna
- 3:39Speaker 1: start in at Castianos every day. Instead, the plan going
- 3:42Speaker 1: forward just gonna sit Ham, allow Brandon marsh Max Kepler
- 3:45Speaker 1: to get some playing time without taking Harrison Bader out
- 3:48Speaker 1: of the lineup. Essentially you know him be the everyday
- 3:53Speaker 1: center fielder Westden Wilson. He'd also get the occasional start
- 3:57Speaker 1: against the tough left handed pitcher or so. Since that time, Len,
- 4:01Speaker 1: the Phillies have had the best record in the National League,
- 4:04Speaker 1: fourth best overall at nineteen and almost twenty and eleven.
- 4:08Speaker 1: I think at this point as we are recording this,
- 4:12Speaker 1: because they are beating the Marlins as we're recording this
- 4:15Speaker 1: Wednesday night, and I mean much of the outfield's resurgence
- 4:19Speaker 1: it has to go to Harrison Bader for sure, but
- 4:22Speaker 1: Brandon marsh has also seen an uptick in his production
- 4:25Speaker 1: since the rotation became official. Rob Thompson knew what he
- 4:29Speaker 1: was doing here. It was a great decision and it's
- 4:32Speaker 1: been paying off here. I love what we're seeing from
- 4:36Speaker 1: this team in the outfield has consistently been a question
- 4:39Speaker 1: mark in so many different areas, and things just seem
- 4:41Speaker 1: like they've been coming together here.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean everything is working right now, and you
- 4:47Speaker 2: know that's kind of a fragile thing. It's not always sustainable,
- 4:51Speaker 2: but for right now, I mean, you can not like
- 4:54Speaker 2: Rob Thompson all you want, but what he's doing right
- 4:57Speaker 2: now is one hundred percent working a lot. I think
- 4:59Speaker 2: a lot of the for that should go to Harrison Bader,
- 5:04Speaker 2: who I remember last time I was on the show
- 5:06Speaker 2: just mentioning that he's been so much better than I
- 5:10Speaker 2: ever thought he would be. And he's a guy now, like,
- 5:14Speaker 2: how do you not put him in center field every night?
- 5:16Speaker 2: And that's caused a bit of a shake up with
- 5:18Speaker 2: everybody else because now you don't really worry about Marsh
- 5:21Speaker 2: playing and center anymore, you know, so you can kind
- 5:25Speaker 2: of move stuff around and mix and match a little
- 5:27Speaker 2: bit better. So yeah, and I don't know some of
- 5:30Speaker 2: those guys like I don't know Marsh, you know, kepler
- 5:37Speaker 2: guys like that. You're you kind of thought like, is
- 5:40Speaker 2: this a guy you really want to see getting five
- 5:41Speaker 2: hundred and fifty at bats a year, maybe in a
- 5:44Speaker 2: bigger sample size, to get exposed a little bit more.
- 5:47Speaker 2: So this is kind of preventing that from happening. You
- 5:49Speaker 2: can work matchups a little bit righty versus lefty when
- 5:53Speaker 2: you have guys that you're confident in spreading stuff out
- 5:56Speaker 2: in smaller doses with them. Yeah, So I think it works,
- 5:59Speaker 2: and you know, and yeah, you're gonna have some bumps
- 6:02Speaker 2: in the road. Obviously, Nick Castianos has not been happy
- 6:06Speaker 2: about his playing time, which I don't think that from
- 6:10Speaker 2: the clips I've heard. I didn't think anything he said
- 6:13Speaker 2: was that necessarily objectionable? Yeah, and look, no offense. But
- 6:18Speaker 2: I want a guy that wants to be out there.
- 6:19Speaker 2: I want a guy that you know that these guys
- 6:22Speaker 2: are professional athletes, they they want to be out there.
- 6:25Speaker 2: So I think it was more with the reporter that
- 6:28Speaker 2: was just like a few days because he wouldn't let
- 6:30Speaker 2: it go.
- 6:30Speaker 1: He just kept pounding and pounded. It's like, because then.
- 6:33Speaker 2: That reporter had an agenda and had a story he
- 6:36Speaker 2: was damn sure going to try to get and you know,
- 6:39Speaker 2: and it eventually happened. You know, there's only so many
- 6:42Speaker 2: ways you can answer the same question, and.
- 6:44Speaker 1: I have, Yeah, I know what reporters have to do
- 6:48Speaker 1: at times, what they need to do. But after after
- 6:51Speaker 1: a couple questions, you're like, okay, maybe I should stop,
- 6:54Speaker 1: And he just wasn't. It was relentless, but really quickly
- 6:58Speaker 1: and before we, you know, move on from this particular
- 7:01Speaker 1: story here. I just want to mention Max Kepler really
- 7:05Speaker 1: quick because he looked to be a failed signing, you know,
- 7:10Speaker 1: just destined to be dfa'd once the deadline came to
- 7:13Speaker 1: pass and stuff. But because look his splits, his splits
- 7:18Speaker 1: before August two oh three, two ninety seven, three fifty seven, right,
- 7:24Speaker 1: the first four months of the season just not going well.
- 7:27Speaker 1: He has been hitting two point fifty seven with a
- 7:29Speaker 1: seven ninety seven ops since August first. I mean, it's incredible.
- 7:34Speaker 1: What's happened with him? I just I just have to
- 7:37Speaker 1: say it, Rob Thomas, Rob Thompson. Wh Why do I
- 7:40Speaker 1: keep messing up his last name? What the hell is?
- 7:42Speaker 2: Yeah? Have you been listening to a lot of Matchbox twenty?
- 7:46Speaker 2: Match Box? Oh?
- 7:47Speaker 1: I know what the hell's going on with me? Anyway?
- 7:49Speaker 1: I don't know the skipper you know he did? There
- 7:53Speaker 1: you go, Yeah, there you go. In all honesty, Rob,
- 7:55Speaker 1: he needs to be commended for this, the type of
- 8:00Speaker 1: manager that he is, and the people who have crapped
- 8:04Speaker 1: on him continuously need to shut the hell up. This
- 8:07Speaker 1: has been a great decision. Even somebody like Max Kepler's
- 8:10Speaker 1: been able to benefit from this. I think it needs
- 8:13Speaker 1: to be.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Said, and you know, maybe it's something that you know,
- 8:17Speaker 2: can carry into the playoffs a little bit in terms
- 8:19Speaker 2: from in terms of a management style. Yeah, because you know,
- 8:23Speaker 2: I don't know. The playoffs just feel like it's a
- 8:25Speaker 2: shorter leash and you're you're going with the hot hand
- 8:28Speaker 2: and you're you're you're really playing matchups and stuff like that,
- 8:31Speaker 2: and it seems like they've been doing more of match
- 8:35Speaker 2: up baseball, you know, and they've had to due to
- 8:39Speaker 2: injuries with Boem going down, Trey Turner going down. I
- 8:42Speaker 2: know they've been resting you know, Harper recently, so you know,
- 8:46Speaker 2: he they've already kind of been doing that, So maybe
- 8:48Speaker 2: it won't really be a you know, a you know,
- 8:51Speaker 2: new thing for Thompson have to do once they actually
- 8:54Speaker 2: get into the playoffs.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely, we'd love to hear what you think about
- 8:59Speaker 1: this particular field rotation and just what's happening with this
- 9:02Speaker 1: Philadelphia Phillies team. Reach out to Philadelphia Sports Table at
- 9:05Speaker 1: gmail dot com. We'd love to read your email here
- 9:07Speaker 1: on the show and respond to it. In fact, I'm
- 9:10Speaker 1: remembering now that we had a couple of emails come
- 9:12Speaker 1: in this past week. I'm remembering you forget right now,
- 9:16Speaker 1: forgot to put them on our agenda. Oh sorry, folks,
- 9:19Speaker 1: I know we've got one I think from our buddy Patrick,
- 9:22Speaker 1: and I completely forgot to put it on the cap.
- 9:25Speaker 1: I'm just being honest. It's been a little busy it's
- 9:29Speaker 1: been busy, so reach out to us. Really, we'll read
- 9:33Speaker 1: your email the show Philadelphia Sports Table at gmail dot com. Look,
- 9:38Speaker 1: we got to talk about the Philadelphia Union two here, Lenn,
- 9:41Speaker 1: because this is a team as we are recording this here,
- 9:45Speaker 1: they're doing pretty well and they have been doing pretty
- 9:47Speaker 1: well for most of the season. They pulled out a
- 9:49Speaker 1: win against the New England Revolution this past weekend after
- 9:53Speaker 1: after tough outings against Nashville Vancouver. Those two matchups, you'll
- 9:57Speaker 1: watch them and you think to yourself, oh boy, they
- 10:00Speaker 1: just lose in steam. But they pulled out a one
- 10:03Speaker 1: to nothing victory over New England this past weekend. So
- 10:07Speaker 1: just wanted to give our thoughts here as we're almost
- 10:10Speaker 1: at the end of this season. And look, they are
- 10:13Speaker 1: at the top of the supporters Shield by three points here,
- 10:16Speaker 1: so it's it has been a fun season. And they
- 10:21Speaker 1: faced DC United this coming Saturday, seven thirty pm start.
- 10:27Speaker 1: You know, the matchup against New England performance was a
- 10:31Speaker 1: bit a bit uneven, but I think the Union showed
- 10:35Speaker 1: us that they can really step up when it matters,
- 10:38Speaker 1: and they've done it a number of times so far
- 10:40Speaker 1: this year, and they certainly need to clean some things
- 10:42Speaker 1: up offensively again. Three more games to do it, Lend,
- 10:46Speaker 1: but the team is looking pretty good here at this point,
- 10:49Speaker 1: you know, towards this latter part of the season.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Yeah, the matchup against New England, it's I think it's
- 10:55Speaker 2: kind of rare that maybe you have the mindset of well,
- 10:58Speaker 2: the results more important in the performance, because you always
- 11:01Speaker 2: want your team to be performing well and firing on
- 11:03Speaker 2: all cylinders, because if you're doing that, winning should take
- 11:06Speaker 2: care of itself. In this case, I just wanted to
- 11:09Speaker 2: see them get the win against New England because they
- 11:11Speaker 2: were in a bit of a tail spin. They went
- 11:13Speaker 2: out to Vancouver and absolutely got pantsed. I get why
- 11:19Speaker 2: they were resting a lot of people because they had
- 11:21Speaker 2: the US Open Cup match up a couple of days
- 11:24Speaker 2: later versus Nashville, which they went and lost. Anyway, so
- 11:28Speaker 2: you've got two big losses back to back, so just
- 11:30Speaker 2: to be able to pull out of that tail spin,
- 11:34Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, you want them to look good all
- 11:37Speaker 2: the time, but at that point, it's just get a win,
- 11:39Speaker 2: Just pull up out of this funk that you're in.
- 11:42Speaker 2: And that's what they did.
- 11:43Speaker 1: So, you know, they were pretty solid defensively against New England,
- 11:46Speaker 1: which was great to see.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a shutout, so it's you know, you can't
- 11:51Speaker 2: ask for much more than that. But yeah, so, I
- 11:53Speaker 2: mean that was a it was a win that they
- 11:56Speaker 2: kind of had to have just to kind of get
- 11:58Speaker 2: back on the right side of things. And as you said, yeah,
- 12:01Speaker 2: they have a matchup against DC United coming up here
- 12:04Speaker 2: on Saturday, and then two more games after that. They
- 12:08Speaker 2: have one at home against NYCFC and then they finished
- 12:13Speaker 2: the season in Charlotte. So yeah, they three more games
- 12:18Speaker 2: left in the regular season games by the way, Yes, yeah,
- 12:22Speaker 2: these are opponents that that they should kind of I mean,
- 12:26Speaker 2: Charlotte's a decent team this year. They're they're fourth in
- 12:28Speaker 2: the East. NYCFC is fifth in the East. So these
- 12:32Speaker 2: aren't pushovers by any stretch. But listen, they're phillies at
- 12:36Speaker 2: the top of the standing. So they should be taking
- 12:39Speaker 2: care of business against these teams. If you can win
- 12:41Speaker 2: two out of three of those, I think you're in
- 12:44Speaker 2: good shape. Yeah.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Absolutely, all right, we are going to be taking a
- 12:48Speaker 1: break here, but before we do, we are hoping that
- 12:51Speaker 1: you will subscribe to us. If you are watching on YouTube,
- 12:55Speaker 1: make sure you like us here subscribe. That really does
- 12:59Speaker 1: help us out let your friends and family know about
- 13:02Speaker 1: the fact that we are on YouTube. We've been on
- 13:04Speaker 1: YouTube since April. Absolutely love being on YouTube. Some of
- 13:09Speaker 1: the comments every now and again are fun. And we
- 13:12Speaker 1: are also on social media, as longtime listeners will know.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Instagram at Philadelphia Sports Table, Twitter, slash x at Philadelphia PST.
- 13:22Speaker 1: I'm over on TikTok at mister Jeff Warren, give me
- 13:24Speaker 1: a follow over there. Eric and I are on Blue Sky.
- 13:26Speaker 1: We're on threads Facebook page as well. We would we'd
- 13:31Speaker 1: love to correspond with you. So that being said, folks,
- 13:34Speaker 1: we're gonna take a break and when we come back,
- 13:36Speaker 1: we're gonna get some Flyers talk and some Eagles talk.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Stick with us, all right, We are back and the
- 13:44Speaker 1: Flyer season is like right around the corner here, Lynn,
- 13:47Speaker 1: But before we get into some of the preseason action
- 13:49Speaker 1: that we have seen thus far, be remissed if we
- 13:52Speaker 1: didn't mention that Flyer's legend Bernie parent passes away at
- 13:57Speaker 1: the age of eighty this past week here. As many
- 14:00Speaker 1: of us known know our Flyers history, Bernie Parent was
- 14:04Speaker 1: He had two separate stints with the Flyers back in
- 14:09Speaker 1: nineteen sixty seven to nineteen sixty eight, but it was
- 14:13Speaker 1: his second run with the team that really would be
- 14:16Speaker 1: remembered most. The nineteen seventy three seventy four season a
- 14:21Speaker 1: very strong case to be remembered as one of the
- 14:23Speaker 1: best goaltending seasons of all time. In seventy three games,
- 14:27Speaker 1: Bernie parent shouldered that twenty eighth highest minutes workload in
- 14:32Speaker 1: recorded NHL history, posted a league high nine thirty two
- 14:36Speaker 1: save percentage with twelve shutouts. So just an incredible season
- 14:41Speaker 1: he had and a legend, you know, and then we're
- 14:44Speaker 1: getting to that age where the legends are going away.
- 14:48Speaker 1: It's kind of sad to see, but boy, he left
- 14:52Speaker 1: his mark on this team. And it'd be nice if
- 14:54Speaker 1: we got a goalie like him at some point down
- 14:55Speaker 1: the road for this flying current flys.
- 14:58Speaker 2: I mean a little bit to ask there, I mean, yeah, prompt.
- 15:03Speaker 2: You know, he he he lived to be eighty, so
- 15:06Speaker 2: I mean it's, you know, a full life. But you know,
- 15:10Speaker 2: when he was at his best, Uh, those those two
- 15:13Speaker 2: Stanley Cup years in particular seventy three seventy four or
- 15:16Speaker 2: seventy four seventy five, just the numbers are or otherworldly.
- 15:20Speaker 2: I mean it's laughable. Yeah, I mean how good these
- 15:24Speaker 2: numbers are leading the league in seventy three seventy four,
- 15:27Speaker 2: particularly say, percentage goals against average shots, you know, taking saves,
- 15:34Speaker 2: basically any metric you wanted that year, he led the
- 15:37Speaker 2: league in it. And something that you know, just just
- 15:41Speaker 2: from reading you know various things. You know, something that
- 15:44Speaker 2: you kind of forget is the fact that you know
- 15:47Speaker 2: he played for the most infamous style wise team of
- 15:53Speaker 2: all time. Have you know, a punishing team, a team
- 15:57Speaker 2: that had a lot of guys spend a lot of
- 15:59Speaker 2: time in the penal box. So you when you think
- 16:02Speaker 2: about his stats, also think about the fact that how
- 16:05Speaker 2: much of that time was spent probably shorthanded on the
- 16:08Speaker 2: penalty kill because of all those penalties that those Broad
- 16:11Speaker 2: Street Bully teams took on. It takes those numbers and
- 16:15Speaker 2: puts them in a different context and and makes them
- 16:19Speaker 2: even greater. I mean so, and Bobby Clark said it,
- 16:22Speaker 2: you know, when when he had his his uh, you know,
- 16:26Speaker 2: comments on the on the passing of Bernie Prompt. We
- 16:30Speaker 2: he's the one guy on that team that if he's
- 16:32Speaker 2: not there, there's no way we win. And he's right,
- 16:36Speaker 2: you know, I think it's hard because I mean those
- 16:40Speaker 2: those two years stand out. I mean, he was great otherwise,
- 16:43Speaker 2: but those two years particularly stand out. But I mean,
- 16:46Speaker 2: I know, when you think of, okay, who is the
- 16:48Speaker 2: greatest flyer of all time? I think most people would
- 16:52Speaker 2: probably say Bobby Clark. But if you wanted to make
- 16:55Speaker 2: a case for Bernie Prompt as the greatest flyer of
- 16:58Speaker 2: all time, I I could not come await saying, oh
- 17:03Speaker 2: no way, Ye, you know, he's he's very very very
- 17:08Speaker 2: much should be in that conversation.
- 17:10Speaker 1: So I wish I wish we could bring him back
- 17:13Speaker 1: and just put him in front of the net. Yeah,
- 17:17Speaker 1: I mean, as a young man, that would.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Yeah, the current situation is a little scared.
- 17:24Speaker 1: It does it does it does things. So let's get
- 17:27Speaker 1: into this Flyers preseason here. I mean, just you know,
- 17:31Speaker 1: there have been a couple of games thus far. They
- 17:34Speaker 1: ended up they ended up beating the Islanders and their
- 17:37Speaker 1: preseason opener, and and in that particular game, Len I
- 17:41Speaker 1: thought it was really great to see matt Vey, Mitchkoff
- 17:46Speaker 1: and the Trevor Zegris line. I mean, they were really
- 17:50Speaker 1: they were really humming along and it was really great
- 17:53Speaker 1: to see, I'll be honest with you too, And I
- 17:55Speaker 1: don't think he's by any stretch going to be on
- 17:57Speaker 1: the opening night roster, but Jack Nesbit man he was.
- 18:02Speaker 1: He consistently was standing out. Aside from his sometimes ridiculous
- 18:09Speaker 1: looking skating style, he just always seemed to be in
- 18:12Speaker 1: the right place, disrupting plays, just pouncing on those loose pucks.
- 18:16Speaker 1: It was really nice to see Jack Nesbitt out there
- 18:19Speaker 1: really making a contribution in the very first game of
- 18:23Speaker 1: the season. I mean that that's one of the things
- 18:25Speaker 1: I really took away from the very first Flyers preseason game.
- 18:28Speaker 1: I don't know what, what were you thinking right out
- 18:30Speaker 1: of the gate? Anybody in particular really stand out to you?
- 18:34Speaker 2: I mean, Nesbit is kind of maybe the headliner. I
- 18:38Speaker 2: didn't actually get to see the game, but the fact that,
- 18:40Speaker 2: you know, this is a guy that was taking twelfth overall,
- 18:43Speaker 2: higher than pretty much any mock had drafted, Yeah, higher
- 18:47Speaker 2: than anybody thought. You know, when when the Flyers you know,
- 18:49Speaker 2: trade up to get that pick, Oh, who's it going
- 18:51Speaker 2: to be. The fact that it was Nesbit was like
- 18:54Speaker 2: pretty surprising to me just because he wasn't you know,
- 18:57Speaker 2: I knew they liked him, but I didn't know that
- 18:59Speaker 2: they liked him that high, So he's obviously going to
- 19:02Speaker 2: be somebody that you have to look at, and the
- 19:05Speaker 2: skating is something that they're going to have to figure out.
- 19:06Speaker 2: But you know, they they seem everything I've read about
- 19:11Speaker 2: him so far, as far as like the rookie camps
- 19:14Speaker 2: and all that stuff. Anything in the mini camps has
- 19:16Speaker 2: talked about, you know, the hockey IQ and how it's
- 19:20Speaker 2: you know, I've heard more than a few things mentioned
- 19:23Speaker 2: reminiscent of a young Sean Couturier and hockey IQ. So
- 19:27Speaker 2: you know, yes, the skating has to improve because it
- 19:30Speaker 2: is clunky, but if it does, and the Flyers have
- 19:33Speaker 2: had a couple guys over the past couple of years
- 19:35Speaker 2: where the skating was a little scary at first and
- 19:38Speaker 2: then it turned out to be that they were able
- 19:41Speaker 2: to work with it to the point where it was
- 19:42Speaker 2: at least passable at least average, if not to above
- 19:46Speaker 2: average with certain guys. So if they can do that
- 19:48Speaker 2: with Nesbit, then they may have a guy that you know,
- 19:53Speaker 2: is a lot more than any of us thought that
- 19:56Speaker 2: he would he would be maybe in those pre draft rankings. Yeah,
- 20:00Speaker 2: it's an exciting thing to think about. It's not something
- 20:03Speaker 2: you know, I want to bank on because there there's
- 20:05Speaker 2: such a I mean, unless you're one of these guys
- 20:08Speaker 2: that comes into the NHL as one of the first
- 20:10Speaker 2: couple picks and you start as an eighteen year old, Yeah,
- 20:13Speaker 2: there's such a growth card that still needs to happen
- 20:15Speaker 2: from like the age of eighteen until maybe twenty two
- 20:18Speaker 2: when you break into the league. That has to happen.
- 20:22Speaker 2: And you know, I think he's just starting down that path. Yeah.
- 20:25Speaker 1: I think what's interesting is I read I subscribe to
- 20:28Speaker 1: phl Y and our good friend of the show, Charlie
- 20:32Speaker 1: O'Connor wrote a piece and within that he was talking
- 20:35Speaker 1: about Jack Nesbitt and he said that his skating looked
- 20:40Speaker 1: improved even from where he was at in development camp
- 20:43Speaker 1: back in July. All right, that's that's like too. That's
- 20:47Speaker 1: actually less than two months, like a month and a
- 20:49Speaker 1: half at this point, and Charlie is already seeing improved skating.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Leads me to believe that, you know what, this kid
- 20:56Speaker 1: is coachable. This man is going to be able to
- 20:59Speaker 1: develop and I I think things are going to be
- 21:01Speaker 1: really really nice.
- 21:04Speaker 2: He's coachable, and he's now in a professional organization where
- 21:08Speaker 2: you know, all of these organizations are able to hire,
- 21:11Speaker 2: you know, the best of the best in terms of
- 21:13Speaker 2: like the skating coaches and things of that nature. So
- 21:17Speaker 2: you're gonna, if you're a prospect of any kind of work,
- 21:20Speaker 2: you're gonna pick up a couple of things in there,
- 21:23Speaker 2: and hopefully he can take that back with him the juniors,
- 21:25Speaker 2: because I think that's where he's gonna end up and
- 21:28Speaker 2: kind of see what happens there. So, yeah, he's an
- 21:33Speaker 2: interesting guy to me. Gent Luchanco is for a different reason.
- 21:36Speaker 2: It's very interesting just because of the situation. He's a
- 21:39Speaker 2: guy that he's either going to make the team because
- 21:42Speaker 2: of the HL role for one more year where the
- 21:45Speaker 2: age limit is twenty and he's not quite there yet,
- 21:47Speaker 2: So he either makes the Flyers or he goes back
- 21:50Speaker 2: to his team and juniors, which isn't really that good.
- 21:53Speaker 2: So he's kind of the standout guy on that team.
- 21:56Speaker 2: So if he goes back there, how much is it
- 21:59Speaker 2: helping him development playing on that team, So you know,
- 22:04Speaker 2: we'll have to see what happens there. I have a
- 22:06Speaker 2: feeling that they would like for him to make the
- 22:09Speaker 2: team so that he can, you know, just iron sharpens
- 22:12Speaker 2: iron and he can continue to get better every night
- 22:14Speaker 2: rather than be the best player on a bad team
- 22:17Speaker 2: in juniors. So we'll have to see what happens there.
- 22:19Speaker 2: I'm excited. I'm actually going tomorrow night. The Flyers are
- 22:24Speaker 2: playing the Caps in the Giant Center in Hershey, So
- 22:27Speaker 2: I'm going to that game. So I want to see
- 22:30Speaker 2: just from a like a standpoint of who they're going
- 22:32Speaker 2: to because you know, you want to get your veteran
- 22:34Speaker 2: got people in there some and get them some reps,
- 22:37Speaker 2: but you want to really see the young guys. So
- 22:39Speaker 2: I want to see the mix. I want to see
- 22:40Speaker 2: who's playing, who's sitting, and just kind of get a
- 22:43Speaker 2: sense of you know, maybe maybe get to see some
- 22:46Speaker 2: guys that I haven't seen yet and maybe make them
- 22:48Speaker 2: you know, I'll get my own eyes on them and
- 22:50Speaker 2: be able to you know, get my own thoughts on them.
- 22:53Speaker 2: So that I'm excited about that.
- 22:54Speaker 1: Very nice, very good. Let's talk about that on the show.
- 22:57Speaker 1: If we remember, if we remember, I to hear what
- 23:00Speaker 1: you saw there. Specifically, look, Flyers lost to Montreal in
- 23:04Speaker 1: their second game of second preseason game, and you know,
- 23:08Speaker 1: we go back to you know, I know we were
- 23:10Speaker 1: talking about Bernie and and you know, we'd love to
- 23:12Speaker 1: have him in front of the net, but boy, Sam Ersen.
- 23:16Speaker 2: Man, yeah, he got pretty bad.
- 23:19Speaker 1: And look, it's a preseason game. It's just you know,
- 23:22Speaker 1: they're just getting into quote, you know, the hockey shape
- 23:25Speaker 1: here during preseason. But it's just it's a concern and
- 23:28Speaker 1: it's the one area on this team that I'm not
- 23:31Speaker 1: one hundred percent confident and in terms of the in
- 23:34Speaker 1: terms of the rebuild, in terms of the plan of action,
- 23:37Speaker 1: that we really know what's going to be going on
- 23:39Speaker 1: with this particular position that's so critical in the future.
- 23:42Speaker 2: Lenn Yeah, I mean, it'll be interesting to see how
- 23:46Speaker 2: it all shakes out. I mean, you know, unless he
- 23:48Speaker 2: completely just dive bombs off the face of the earth,
- 23:51Speaker 2: I mean, it's going to be Arson and Vlad and
- 23:55Speaker 2: you know, then you're gonna have you know, koll Usov
- 23:58Speaker 2: in the HL with Lehigh Valley Ivan Fidodov having been
- 24:01Speaker 2: traded to Columbus, He's now no longer part of the
- 24:04Speaker 2: picture there, so you know, there's a little bit more
- 24:08Speaker 2: defined roles. There's not as many, you know, not as
- 24:13Speaker 2: many you know, people that you got to get reps
- 24:15Speaker 2: to and things like that. So I think that hierarchy
- 24:20Speaker 2: as far as the goalies between the NHL and the
- 24:22Speaker 2: HL is relatively set. So now it's up to you
- 24:27Speaker 2: know Urson too, you know, having what we think is
- 24:31Speaker 2: going to be a more capable backup this year in Bladar.
- 24:34Speaker 2: It's incumbent upon him, like show us that you are
- 24:38Speaker 2: the number one guy or at least one A in
- 24:40Speaker 2: a one A one B tandem. You know, now's the chance. Yeah,
- 24:44Speaker 2: so see what he does.
- 24:46Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, let us know what you're thinking about this
- 24:49Speaker 1: Flyers preseason, the goalie situation, Philadelphia Sports Table at gmail
- 24:52Speaker 1: dot com. But love to read your email here on
- 24:54Speaker 1: the show and respond to it.
- 24:56Speaker 2: Len.
- 24:56Speaker 1: Before I let you go, let's get into some Eagles
- 24:58Speaker 1: talk here, because while this season has been good in
- 25:03Speaker 1: terms of a three to zero record, at this point,
- 25:06Speaker 1: we first wanted to talk about just Saquon Barkley and
- 25:08Speaker 1: what we should be making of his season. He's certainly
- 25:11Speaker 1: not replicating what he did last year. After three games,
- 25:15Speaker 1: he's had fifty eight carries, which is tied for second
- 25:18Speaker 1: in the league, one hundred and ninety four yards, which
- 25:21Speaker 1: is twelfth in the league, two touchdowns, tied for eleventh,
- 25:24Speaker 1: and he's averaging only three point three yards per carry,
- 25:28Speaker 1: which is one hundred and twenty first in the league here,
- 25:32Speaker 1: So I don't necessarily think we need to be panicking
- 25:36Speaker 1: by any stretch. I think so many of these players
- 25:39Speaker 1: that don't play in the preseason, like we're just talking
- 25:41Speaker 1: about with the Flyers getting into the hockey shape, A
- 25:44Speaker 1: lot of these guys are still I think, you know,
- 25:46Speaker 1: I think Week four is going to be a defining
- 25:47Speaker 1: moment here for this Eagles team. A lot of these
- 25:50Speaker 1: guys getting into football shape that really weren't playing a
- 25:53Speaker 1: lot in the preseason, just trying to get back in
- 25:55Speaker 1: the swing of things here. I don't think there's a
- 25:58Speaker 1: Super Bowl hangover by any stretch. I mean this as
- 26:00Speaker 1: a team that's three and zero, but the offense having
- 26:03Speaker 1: some issues, Saquon Barkley in particular, I'm a bit baffled
- 26:07Speaker 1: by it. Maybe it's just the defenses that have been
- 26:09Speaker 1: able to hone in on him, because this offensive line
- 26:12Speaker 1: is still pretty damn good. So I don't know what
- 26:14Speaker 1: are your thoughts here about Saquon Barkley, what we've seen
- 26:18Speaker 1: from him thus far here.
- 26:20Speaker 2: I think that just you know, I think the league
- 26:23Speaker 2: saw in the Super Bowl they're like, Okay, the Chief said,
- 26:27Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts, you got to beat us because we're shut
- 26:30Speaker 2: We're focusing all of our efforts on Saquon and we're
- 26:34Speaker 2: shutting that part of the game down. And to his credit,
- 26:37Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts did exactly that. But I think the rest
- 26:40Speaker 2: of the league is kind of maybe still on that motive. Okay,
- 26:43Speaker 2: continue to show us. We're going to continue to dare
- 26:46Speaker 2: you guys to use Jalen Hurts abuse because we are
- 26:49Speaker 2: going to focus our efforts on stopping Saquon Barkley. I
- 26:53Speaker 2: think that is still where almost the entirety of the
- 26:58Speaker 2: defensive game plan against the Philadelphia Eagles goes to. As
- 27:02Speaker 2: far as attention, I think it goes to Saquon Barkley,
- 27:04Speaker 2: and I think it's going to continue to go to
- 27:06Speaker 2: Saquon Barkley until Parts is just throwing the ball all
- 27:08Speaker 2: over the field and A. J. Brown and DeVante Smith
- 27:12Speaker 2: are just racking up huge numbers. Right then maybe they're like, Okay,
- 27:16Speaker 2: we got to pick our poison here and we got
- 27:18Speaker 2: to spread out a little bit more, and maybe at
- 27:19Speaker 2: that point things loosen up for Saquon Barkley. I also
- 27:24Speaker 2: just have a feeling okay. New offensive coordinator Kevin Botulo.
- 27:28Speaker 2: I think they're still I'm not so thinking it's like
- 27:32Speaker 2: the physical aspect of needing to get into football shape,
- 27:35Speaker 2: because to be honest, these guys should already be there.
- 27:38Speaker 2: But I think it is the thing of like, you know,
- 27:40Speaker 2: you have a I know he was with the team
- 27:42Speaker 2: last year, but he is a new offensive coordinator, so
- 27:45Speaker 2: you're you're still maybe trying to get some concepts down
- 27:50Speaker 2: and maybe it's not gelling and maybe Batullo has not
- 27:53Speaker 2: found his footing yet as a play caller. That's very
- 27:56Speaker 2: possible in my mind.
- 27:57Speaker 1: Yes, that's.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Think it's I think at this point it's a combination
- 28:03Speaker 2: of three things of Saquon being keyed on by opposing defenses,
- 28:09Speaker 2: you have a new play card that maybe isn't you know,
- 28:12Speaker 2: fully comfortable yet, or it's not fully clicking yet, whatever
- 28:16Speaker 2: the plan is. And then third is something that we
- 28:20Speaker 2: talked about going in the season, which is our own
- 28:22Speaker 2: expectations in that like he was never gonna be another
- 28:28Speaker 2: two thousand yard season. I'm sorry, They're just not gonna
- 28:31Speaker 2: let that happen two years in a row. Well, yeah,
- 28:35Speaker 2: I think I think people are getting a little. You know,
- 28:39Speaker 2: I don't know, you're you're expecting too much. If you're
- 28:42Speaker 2: expecting that, I'm sorry.
- 28:43Speaker 1: Well, look, I mean, regardless of the trials and tribulations,
- 28:47Speaker 1: the offense has been through the honing in on Saquon
- 28:51Speaker 1: Barkley that opposing defenses are really having success with. Even
- 28:55Speaker 1: though he's not having a dominant year, the Eagles are
- 28:57Speaker 1: still a top three power ranked team in this league.
- 29:01Speaker 1: Land In fact, they're first. They're number one in the
- 29:04Speaker 1: Athletics Power rankings for this week. So where this team
- 29:08Speaker 1: is at, they're not in a bad place right now.
- 29:10Speaker 1: I don't want people thinking, Okay, we're complaining. No, no,
- 29:12Speaker 1: it's not that. It's not we're complaining about any stretch.
- 29:15Speaker 1: I'll take three and oh any day of the week here, yea.
- 29:18Speaker 2: But I mean I'm happy. I'm not gonna see Yeah. Yeah,
- 29:22Speaker 2: I don't think they look great, But okay, you're the
- 29:25Speaker 2: defending champion. You're three and oh so and you can
- 29:28Speaker 2: continue to not look great. But until you get knocked
- 29:31Speaker 2: off your perch a little bit, how do you not
- 29:33Speaker 2: put them as number one exactly? I mean, yeah, I
- 29:35Speaker 2: don't know.
- 29:36Speaker 1: I mean, you could take a look at who their
- 29:37Speaker 1: Super Bowl opponents were the Kansas City Chiefs and Mark
- 29:40Speaker 1: Scofield and I are going to get it Chiefs in
- 29:42Speaker 1: a little bit. Yeah, like like this is is it
- 29:45Speaker 1: just the injuries with the Chiefs and the receiving corps
- 29:48Speaker 1: or is it just Patrick Mahomes can't do it himself anymore?
- 29:51Speaker 1: Like he's been doing it for so long, you know
- 29:54Speaker 1: the time may be coming for him perhaps, And just
- 29:58Speaker 1: they can't they can't run the ball. So I think
- 30:00Speaker 1: gets still early. There's no need for anybody in Eagles
- 30:02Speaker 1: Nation to panic about this team and what they are
- 30:04Speaker 1: able to do. They got a lot of talent and
- 30:07Speaker 1: I think they're going to continue to grow as a
- 30:09Speaker 1: team as well. And that, but I gotta say lend
- 30:12Speaker 1: cornerback two position, as we've talked about before. Oh holy shishka,
- 30:16Speaker 1: Bob Dori Jackson stinks. He is not good.
- 30:20Speaker 2: I'm trying to keep the mindset of last year they
- 30:24Speaker 2: were two and two. I specifically remember at one point
- 30:28Speaker 2: we had a a thing after a bad Eagles game,
- 30:31Speaker 2: a postgame show where I think that the that the
- 30:34Speaker 2: thought of do they need to fire Siriani two and
- 30:38Speaker 2: two star? Yeah, that that I remember that topic being
- 30:41Speaker 2: broached on our show, yes, and they went on to
- 30:43Speaker 2: just you know, obliterate. So I think you got to
- 30:46Speaker 2: give them some rope here and and find their footing.
- 30:50Speaker 2: And you know, hey, they're three and oh we're not
- 30:52Speaker 2: talking about a two and two seasons. Oh five, they're undefeated,
- 30:55Speaker 2: So you know, I think you can afford to give
- 30:58Speaker 2: them a little bit of rope. And eventually, as you
- 31:00Speaker 2: get deeper into the season, you know, provided that they
- 31:03Speaker 2: people don't get hurt, I think eventually things will start
- 31:06Speaker 2: to click a little bit. And once they do, then
- 31:09Speaker 2: you're in a lot better.
- 31:09Speaker 1: So yeah, look, I didn't have it on the agenda
- 31:12Speaker 1: simply because I got you the agenda before we got
- 31:15Speaker 1: the news. But I did want to just mention Nolan
- 31:18Speaker 1: Smith going to injured reserve and that hurts. That is
- 31:22Speaker 1: gonna hurt this defense big time. It's his injury is
- 31:26Speaker 1: not expected to require surgery, but he's expected to be
- 31:31Speaker 1: out throughout the bye week, which is week nine. Perhaps
- 31:34Speaker 1: he comes back week ten. Len, It's it's gonna be hurt.
- 31:39Speaker 1: It's gonna that's gonna hurt, you know. I mean, guess
- 31:41Speaker 1: he had six and a half seasons last year during
- 31:43Speaker 1: the regular season, but just blossomed in the preseason. I'm sorry,
- 31:47Speaker 1: the postseason with a franchise record for sacks. He doesn't
- 31:51Speaker 1: have any sacks this year thus far. Then again, I
- 31:53Speaker 1: think the Eagles total only have three sacks I think
- 31:57Speaker 1: off the top of my head. But losing him is
- 31:59Speaker 1: rough because he's really been set in the edge. He's
- 32:01Speaker 1: been getting in the backfield, he's been disruptive, and uh,
- 32:05Speaker 1: we're gonna have to see some guys step up, like
- 32:06Speaker 1: a ziz O je Lowry. He's gonna need to step
- 32:09Speaker 1: up big time. So it's it's gonna be it's gonna
- 32:11Speaker 1: be tough over these next couple weeks.
- 32:13Speaker 2: I think, yeah, absolutely, I mean this, They have Tampa
- 32:16Speaker 2: this week, right, I mean in Tampa, so that that
- 32:19Speaker 2: game legitimately, I mean, I know Mike Evans is out
- 32:22Speaker 2: for a couple of weeks, right, Oh yeah, yep, So
- 32:24Speaker 2: that helps in terms of the Eagles, But it's still
- 32:28Speaker 2: that game doesn't make me feel entirely comfortable. I mean,
- 32:30Speaker 2: that is a game that you know, Yeah, I think
- 32:33Speaker 2: they're gonna win, But if they don't, would I be shocked. No.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Eagles have lost three out of four the last the
- 32:38Speaker 1: three out of four down at Raymond James Stadium.
- 32:41Speaker 2: Yeah, so yeah, it's entirely possible. Absolutely, But you know,
- 32:45Speaker 2: and and maybe that is a thing of like you know,
- 32:47Speaker 2: we talked about just get the win, doesn't matter how
- 32:49Speaker 2: you look. Maybe that is a thing of like, yeah,
- 32:52Speaker 2: it kind of with the way things are going so far,
- 32:55Speaker 2: and you want to see the offense start to click
- 32:57Speaker 2: and you want to see, okay defensively, how do we
- 33:00Speaker 2: bounce back from an injury? Maybe this is a situation
- 33:03Speaker 2: where it kind of does matter how you look.
- 33:05Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, all right, folks, we are going to take
- 33:07Speaker 1: a break. Buddy, I'm gonna let you go here just
- 33:09Speaker 1: because gotta you gotta get that sweet head on a
- 33:12Speaker 1: pillow there, my friend.
- 33:15Speaker 2: At this point, beauty, sleep isn't a thing. This is
- 33:18Speaker 2: what it is. It's not gonna get any better, but yeah,
- 33:22Speaker 2: I need to get some sleep.
- 33:23Speaker 1: All right, sounds good, folks. We're gonna take a break
- 33:25Speaker 1: when we come back. More NFL talks, some Eagles talk,
- 33:28Speaker 1: NFC talk with our good friend Mark Scofield. Stick with us.
- 33:32Speaker 2: And now on the team.
- 33:36Speaker 1: All right, we are back, folks, getting into this NFL season.
- 33:40Speaker 1: After three weeks, what have we seen from specific teams.
- 33:44Speaker 1: Are certainly gonna be discussing the Philadelphia Eagles a little
- 33:47Speaker 1: bit more here as Lennon and I were just talking
- 33:49Speaker 1: about our Philly teams and we got a great guest
- 33:53Speaker 1: from sp Nation. He's been a great friend of the
- 33:55Speaker 1: podcast for so long, mister Mark Schofield, Buddy, how are you,
- 33:59Speaker 1: my friend?
- 34:00Speaker 3: I'm doing well, Jeff. It is great to be back here.
- 34:03Speaker 3: I can't believe we look ahead all basically spring, summer
- 34:08Speaker 3: to football. We can't wait for it to get here.
- 34:11Speaker 3: It's already week four. I know, like once the game start, like,
- 34:16Speaker 3: it's good to have that rhyme and rhythm of the
- 34:19Speaker 3: football season, right. You got you know, Monday through Wednesday,
- 34:22Speaker 3: we're talking about what just happened Thursday, Friday, Saturday, we
- 34:25Speaker 3: started thinking about what's gonna happen. We get games and
- 34:27Speaker 3: then we're into that routine and you know, you and
- 34:30Speaker 3: I think we're similarly with sort of creatures have happened? Right,
- 34:32Speaker 3: We need to have that structure back. But it flies four.
- 34:37Speaker 3: I mean I get some teams that have already been
- 34:39Speaker 3: eliminated from playoff contention, I know to October. Yeah, but
- 34:43Speaker 3: it's flying.
- 34:44Speaker 1: It really is I think the like, I'm so glad
- 34:47Speaker 1: it's here, So glad we have the NFL. I'm so
- 34:49Speaker 1: glad we have college football. Even even high school football
- 34:52Speaker 1: around in my area is really huge. But one of
- 34:54Speaker 1: my daughters is a cheerleader, so I'm going to a
- 34:56Speaker 1: lot of high school football games. But with the NFL,
- 35:00Speaker 1: I think the most disappointing part. I don't mean just
- 35:02Speaker 1: like start off negative, but it's just the injuries. My gosh,
- 35:04Speaker 1: the amount of injuries this season. And I know we
- 35:07Speaker 1: see this every single year, but that's been kind of
- 35:09Speaker 1: disappointing because you know that certain teams could be capable
- 35:12Speaker 1: of more. We're certainly going to be getting into some
- 35:14Speaker 1: of those teams probably here in just a bit. But
- 35:17Speaker 1: the injury bug that has been going around twenty twenty
- 35:20Speaker 1: five here is really prevalent.
- 35:23Speaker 3: Yeah, and I don't want to man, we're gonna be
- 35:28Speaker 3: on a real doub note here at a sessions.
- 35:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean.
- 35:32Speaker 3: It almost makes it harder and harder to enjoy it
- 35:36Speaker 3: in a way, because there's the human element of seeing
- 35:41Speaker 3: what these athletes put themselves through to get here, to
- 35:45Speaker 3: get to, you know, in some cases, to make an
- 35:48Speaker 3: NFL roster in some cases to earn a started spot
- 35:50Speaker 3: or you know, a premium backup spot where you're playing
- 35:54Speaker 3: a lot, and then that gets taken away from you,
- 35:56Speaker 3: whether it's for a series, a game, a season. Yeah,
- 36:00Speaker 3: you know, that's hard. There's the acknowledgment that you know,
- 36:03Speaker 3: these for the most part athletes don't have lawn shelf lines.
- 36:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:07Speaker 3: I mean, you know the Brady's that stick around for
- 36:10Speaker 3: say twenty three years, they're not the norm, right, you know,
- 36:14Speaker 3: the average career is three four years now, And so
- 36:16Speaker 3: there's that element too. And then there's the fact that
- 36:20Speaker 3: you know, if you want to get into the more
- 36:21Speaker 3: of the toll it takes on a team, on a
- 36:24Speaker 3: team's potential, you know, you think about a position like
- 36:27Speaker 3: offensive line, right, and we've we've talked about this idea
- 36:29Speaker 3: for a while now, where it's a weak link position group. Yeah,
- 36:34Speaker 3: and got four good offensive linemen and one bad one.
- 36:39Speaker 3: You don't have a good offensive line. Well, you can
- 36:42Speaker 3: have a very good offensive line to start the year.
- 36:45Speaker 3: You could have five great offensive lineman. One gets hurt.
- 36:47Speaker 3: Now you've got four great offensive linemen and one average backup,
- 36:50Speaker 3: you're in trouble. Yeah, you know, and I think you
- 36:53Speaker 3: know you saw Lane Johnson go out. I can have
- 36:57Speaker 3: on an offensive line, yeah, by on a on a team,
- 37:01Speaker 3: on an offense, on a quarterback, if you have the
- 37:04Speaker 3: injury bugget so, yeah, it's and maybe this is me
- 37:07Speaker 3: getting older, Maybe this is me getting gray er. Maybe
- 37:10Speaker 3: this is me even the reading glasses more. But it's
- 37:13Speaker 3: sometimes hard to see, like the human toll, the human
- 37:17Speaker 3: side of it. You know, you don't want to see injuries.
- 37:20Speaker 3: You hate seeing injuries. It doesn't matter if it's your team,
- 37:23Speaker 3: another team, arrival team. You still hate that part of
- 37:25Speaker 3: the sport. But it's unfortunately a part of the sport
- 37:28Speaker 3: and teams have to play. Next man has to step
- 37:31Speaker 3: up and you have to move on and go ahead
- 37:33Speaker 3: the next week and try to win a football game.
- 37:35Speaker 1: Absolutely, the NFL doesn't stop because of injuries, not by
- 37:38Speaker 1: any story at Yeah. So look to start us off
- 37:41Speaker 1: with the discussion of where the NFL is at right
- 37:43Speaker 1: now with specific teams after three weeks of play, where
- 37:47Speaker 1: a Philly sports podcast shows. So let's get into the
- 37:50Speaker 1: Philadelphia Eagles. I mean you mentioned them with Lane Johnson
- 37:54Speaker 1: going out this past week. If Matt Pryor come in
- 37:57Speaker 1: for a quarter and a half did not look great.
- 38:01Speaker 1: They put Fred Johnson in things stabilized, the offense looked
- 38:04Speaker 1: a little bit better. But look this Eagles team, they
- 38:06Speaker 1: are certainly not playing their best football at all. In fact,
- 38:09Speaker 1: my co host Len and I are just talking about
- 38:11Speaker 1: how Saquon Barkley has been bottled up by opposing defenses
- 38:15Speaker 1: so far this season, and it took two and a
- 38:17Speaker 1: half games before the passing attack finally came alive. Mark,
- 38:23Speaker 1: what are your thoughts here on what's been happening or
- 38:25Speaker 1: what you think has happened with this Eagles offense? You
- 38:28Speaker 1: know the ins and outs of it. Yet the fact
- 38:30Speaker 1: that they're still pulling out wins and they are three
- 38:33Speaker 1: and zero and in a lot of power rankings right
- 38:35Speaker 1: at the top of this league, and what are your
- 38:37Speaker 1: thoughts here about the Eagles offense?
- 38:40Speaker 3: The three now? I mean, I think that's where you
- 38:44Speaker 3: start this conversation. And Jeff, you and I have talked
- 38:48Speaker 3: for years about the idea of context, right, we put
- 38:52Speaker 3: it into so many conversations, whether it's about draft prospects,
- 38:55Speaker 3: whether it's about college teams, pro teams, et cetera, et cetera.
- 38:59Speaker 3: I think they're three games need some context. You know,
- 39:02Speaker 3: the season opener, the kickoff game, handing the banner, Dallas
- 39:07Speaker 3: Cowboys come up to town, game gets interrupted by whether lightning,
- 39:11Speaker 3: lawn delay, a weird set of circumstances. Week two, Super
- 39:15Speaker 3: Bowl rematch in Kansas City Chiefs only one is the
- 39:18Speaker 3: sky falling in Kansas City. You win that game, and yes,
- 39:23Speaker 3: you know, maybe the offense doesn't look great, maybe the
- 39:25Speaker 3: passing game doesn't look great, and you come home in
- 39:27Speaker 3: the Rams playoff rematch and you're down before you know it,
- 39:31Speaker 3: nineteen seven at the half, twenty six seven, the Boo
- 39:33Speaker 3: Birds are out. How do you come back and win
- 39:35Speaker 3: that game? I think you're three and zero.
- 39:39Speaker 2: Take that.
- 39:40Speaker 3: You don't apologize for winning games in the National Football League,
- 39:43Speaker 3: Like we just talked about it. So many fins can happen, injuries, contact,
- 39:46Speaker 3: all of that. I think what's interesting, and I kind
- 39:49Speaker 3: of wrote this on Monday. You think about last year,
- 39:54Speaker 3: you know, November December, the run into the playoffs, at
- 39:58Speaker 3: the run to the NFC Championship game. There is a
- 40:01Speaker 3: lot rit it's said about is this Eagles passing game
- 40:03Speaker 3: good enough?
- 40:04Speaker 2: Right?
- 40:04Speaker 3: They need to throw more, They need to be better
- 40:06Speaker 3: throw in the football I mean I remember that Panthers
- 40:08Speaker 3: game late in the season. There was a lot of questions, Man,
- 40:10Speaker 3: Jalen Hurts just isn't where it eas to be. I
- 40:13Speaker 3: remember saying things like, well, they don't need to throw
- 40:15Speaker 3: because that running game is so good. But then the
- 40:17Speaker 3: counter to that was, can they throw themselves back into
- 40:20Speaker 3: a game if they have to? They never really needed
- 40:22Speaker 3: to do that last year, right, they had to do
- 40:25Speaker 3: it on Sunday. Yeah, they had to do it on
- 40:27Speaker 3: Sunday at a big way. You're down twenty sixth seven
- 40:29Speaker 3: or a third quarter. You're a one dimensional offense at
- 40:31Speaker 3: that point, right, I mean you were made one dimensional
- 40:33Speaker 3: because of what teams have been doing. Slow and take
- 40:36Speaker 3: one Barkley. Now you absolutely have to be one dimensional.
- 40:39Speaker 3: And what do they do. They throw themselves back in
- 40:41Speaker 3: and they win a football game largely on the back
- 40:44Speaker 3: of Jalen Hurts in the passing game. Who I thought, Yes,
- 40:47Speaker 3: passing game wasn't great first half. Maybe it wasn't great
- 40:49Speaker 3: for the first like you said, two and a half quarters,
- 40:51Speaker 3: I mean two enough games of this season. Yeah, it
- 40:53Speaker 3: was great in the third or fourth quarter. He was
- 40:55Speaker 3: great in the third or fourth quarter doing some things
- 40:57Speaker 3: hit in the backside, dig and all that fun stuff.
- 41:00Speaker 3: And he said it after the game, he said, look,
- 41:02Speaker 3: this show we get another way we can win a
- 41:04Speaker 3: football game. And so I think, more than anything else,
- 41:07Speaker 3: that's my takeaway right now. I love when teams have five, six,
- 41:12Speaker 3: ten different ways they can win a football game. The
- 41:15Speaker 3: ego show, they go, we got one more. All the
- 41:17Speaker 3: questions about, hey, can they throw themselves back at a
- 41:20Speaker 3: game if they have to, they just answered it against
- 41:23Speaker 3: a team that is a playoff caliber team, a team
- 41:27Speaker 3: that they played in the playoffs last year. I mean
- 41:29Speaker 3: I went back before we hopped on. I googled, you know,
- 41:33Speaker 3: Eagles passing game not good enough twenty twenty four, and
- 41:35Speaker 3: story after story, maybe one or two that I even wrote.
- 41:39Speaker 3: We're in there saying is this passing game good enough?
- 41:42Speaker 3: It wasn't really answered, given the run to the Super
- 41:45Speaker 3: Bowl and the way those games unfolded. It was answered
- 41:48Speaker 3: in a big one Sunday, and I think that's a
- 41:49Speaker 3: huge takeaway for this team.
- 41:51Speaker 1: It's interesting how we talk about one dimensional teams. You know,
- 41:56Speaker 1: folks thought that that was the Philadelphia Eagles, and maybe
- 41:58Speaker 1: it still is to a certain extent. After only three
- 42:01Speaker 1: weeks of play this year, but we did see something.
- 42:05Speaker 1: We did see Jalen Hurts come alive with the passing game.
- 42:07Speaker 1: As an Eagles fan, I hold out hope that this
- 42:10Speaker 1: team is going to from an offensive standpoint, that they
- 42:13Speaker 1: will be able to find the run game a little more,
- 42:15Speaker 1: that they will be able to get the ball down
- 42:17Speaker 1: the field when they need to. But it leads me
- 42:19Speaker 1: to another team that I think is really interesting so
- 42:23Speaker 1: far this NFL season, and that's the Washington Commanders within
- 42:26Speaker 1: this NFC East Division. Before the season started, Mark, I
- 42:29Speaker 1: had a feeling we would see this team take some
- 42:32Speaker 1: steps back this year. But look, they're two and one
- 42:35Speaker 1: after facing a number of injuries early this season, and
- 42:38Speaker 1: the one word that I would use for the Commanders
- 42:40Speaker 1: thus far early on is resilient. They have been a
- 42:44Speaker 1: very resilient team. I'm wondering, what are you what's your
- 42:47Speaker 1: take on how the Commanders have looked facing the injury
- 42:51Speaker 1: adversity that they have been going through early on. How
- 42:54Speaker 1: do you assess the Commanders as one of the quote,
- 42:56Speaker 1: you know, top teams in the NFC.
- 43:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I think resilient is a good way
- 43:02Speaker 3: to describe them. Through three games and similar to what
- 43:06Speaker 3: we just said, you don't apologize for winning games. However,
- 43:08Speaker 3: the wins come in the National Football League, they're two
- 43:10Speaker 3: and one. You know, I think that's a good place
- 43:14Speaker 3: to be. Obviously, you'd like to be three to zero,
- 43:16Speaker 3: but they're two and one, and they deserve some credit
- 43:19Speaker 3: for you know, being without Jayden Daniels, being without some guys,
- 43:23Speaker 3: so some of their top flight players and get into
- 43:25Speaker 3: two and one, and I think a solid win against
- 43:27Speaker 3: the Raiders this past week. I also think, look, they
- 43:30Speaker 3: need some context too. You know, your Week one win
- 43:32Speaker 3: is over the New York Giants, a team that is
- 43:34Speaker 3: now turned into their backup quarterback. Yeah, you know, you
- 43:37Speaker 3: lose on a short week on the road against the
- 43:39Speaker 3: Green Bay Packers. You know, I think that's a potential
- 43:43Speaker 3: playoff preview there. So you would have liked to get
- 43:45Speaker 3: that game. You don't get it on the road, don't
- 43:47Speaker 3: get on our short week. Okay, you come back and
- 43:49Speaker 3: you win without your starting quarterback, but it's against the
- 43:51Speaker 3: Raiders team that is coming east. We often see those
- 43:55Speaker 3: teams West coast teams come east and struggle, not that
- 43:58Speaker 3: early window, and you know, maybe some of that was
- 44:00Speaker 3: at work and I think we're going to return to
- 44:02Speaker 3: the Raiders in a moment, because I don't think they've
- 44:04Speaker 3: been as good as perhaps some people might have thought
- 44:07Speaker 3: they were going to be. But look, you're two and one.
- 44:10Speaker 3: You've done it without injury, with some injuries. You did
- 44:13Speaker 3: it in week three without your starting quarterback. You've got
- 44:15Speaker 3: to Terry McLaurin situation now where he apparently has a
- 44:18Speaker 3: quad injury. But if people have found out that he
- 44:21Speaker 3: was actually going to a doctor that specializes in core injuries,
- 44:24Speaker 3: so maybe there's two injuries now at play with one
- 44:27Speaker 3: of your best players. That's why I think Washington deserves
- 44:30Speaker 3: some credit for being where they are at two and one.
- 44:31Speaker 3: And you know, again, you don't apologize for wins in
- 44:34Speaker 3: the National Football League. They have been resilient. But will
- 44:37Speaker 3: the injuries catch up with them? How long does the
- 44:40Speaker 3: Daniels injury linger? How long does this Terry McLaurin situation lingker? Right,
- 44:44Speaker 3: You know, there are some things that they have overcome
- 44:46Speaker 3: so far, but you think about them. You think about
- 44:49Speaker 3: the forty nine ers, for example, a team that has
- 44:51Speaker 3: so many injuries right now, at some point the injuries
- 44:54Speaker 3: are just too much to overcome, right and if you're
- 44:57Speaker 3: a Commander's fan, I think that's where your fear is
- 44:59Speaker 3: right now. At some with these injuries are just going
- 45:01Speaker 3: to be too much.
- 45:02Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, well, look there's another team that I want
- 45:05Speaker 1: to dive into. That is I genuinely have some I'm
- 45:11Speaker 1: surprised at where they're at, and maybe other people are,
- 45:14Speaker 1: maybe some people aren't. But moving over to the AFC,
- 45:17Speaker 1: I never really thought i'd see the day where the
- 45:20Speaker 1: Kansas City Chiefs were in last place in their division
- 45:24Speaker 1: after three weeks. I mean, they haven't been able to
- 45:26Speaker 1: get the rushing game going this year, and Patrick Mahomes
- 45:29Speaker 1: is trying to put the entire team on his back,
- 45:32Speaker 1: and we've seen him do this a number of times
- 45:34Speaker 1: in the past. He's been successful doing that, but as
- 45:36Speaker 1: time goes on, I'm really not sure he can do
- 45:39Speaker 1: that anymore. It's something we talked about on our pregame
- 45:41Speaker 1: preview show before the Eagles and Chiefs game. I talked
- 45:45Speaker 1: about it with my guest at the time. Can Mahomes
- 45:47Speaker 1: continue to do this? Because I thought that he may
- 45:49Speaker 1: have to do that during the Eagles game, and he did,
- 45:52Speaker 1: but he was not able to get it done. Yes,
- 45:55Speaker 1: their two top receivers are out and they haven't been
- 45:57Speaker 1: on the field this season, and perhaps their fortune and
- 46:00Speaker 1: change when those two receivers are back on the field, Mark,
- 46:04Speaker 1: But what are your thoughts about the Chiefs here the
- 46:06Speaker 1: chief struggles as we head into week four, because it's
- 46:09Speaker 1: been it's been kind of fascinating to watch. I'm wondering
- 46:12Speaker 1: if the dominance of that team within that division is
- 46:15Speaker 1: we're starting to see the downslide of it.
- 46:17Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's fascinating. Again. We're sitting here on the
- 46:20Speaker 3: cusp of week four, you know, last weekend of games
- 46:23Speaker 3: in September, and one week four comes to a close,
- 46:28Speaker 3: either the Kansas City Chiefs or the Baltimore Ravens, barring
- 46:30Speaker 3: some sort of tie scenario, are gonna be one and four. Yeah,
- 46:33Speaker 3: one at three, Like, that's not what we expected those
- 46:36Speaker 3: teams to be. And yet they play each other this
- 46:39Speaker 3: week in a game we're all looking forward to, or
- 46:41Speaker 3: at least we're really looking forward to. You know this,
- 46:44Speaker 3: when the schedule was announce says, hey, this my pr
- 46:47Speaker 3: You know, early season crown in the AFC is the
- 46:51Speaker 3: winner of that game. Now it's you win this game.
- 46:53Speaker 3: Your playoff hopes are still a lot. Yeah, you know,
- 46:55Speaker 3: it's almost like it's a de facto playoff game. So
- 46:57Speaker 3: I think that's sort of a fascinating end. Go to
- 47:00Speaker 3: week four here as to the Chiefs in particular, No,
- 47:03Speaker 3: it's interesting. I had this conversation yesterday on the radio Tuesday,
- 47:06Speaker 3: on the radio, recording this on Wednesday about what's going
- 47:10Speaker 3: on in Kansas City, and you know, brought up this
- 47:12Speaker 3: idea of look, you know, if your receivers aren't separated,
- 47:17Speaker 3: as long as you've got a decent enough offensive line
- 47:19Speaker 3: to buy you time, you can create time and create
- 47:21Speaker 3: separation artificially. If your receiver separate but you can't get
- 47:26Speaker 3: blocks in front of you and you're under pressure all
- 47:28Speaker 3: the time, that's okay because you just quick game it.
- 47:31Speaker 3: You get the ball out quickly, you do things schematically,
- 47:33Speaker 3: you can get around that. When you can't get consistent
- 47:37Speaker 3: separation from your receivers and you can't get protection up front, like,
- 47:41Speaker 3: you can't make it work in that scenario, right, you
- 47:44Speaker 3: look at you know the fact, like you said, they're
- 47:46Speaker 3: down some of their top receivers. According to next Gen
- 47:49Speaker 3: stats against the Giants in Week three, the top receiver
- 47:52Speaker 3: in terms of getting separation was Travis Kelce with three
- 47:56Speaker 3: point two yards of average separation from Kansas City. When
- 47:59Speaker 3: it's your tight end that's tough, then it's Taekwon Thornton.
- 48:03Speaker 3: Then it's no a Gray and other sort of tight
- 48:05Speaker 3: end and tight player. And they were all near the
- 48:07Speaker 3: bottom of the list league wide in Week three. That's
- 48:11Speaker 3: not good. And then you look at what's happening from
- 48:13Speaker 3: a protection standpoint, and Mahomes is getting pressured. They give
- 48:16Speaker 3: it up pressure sometimes when it's just four Eagles, fans
- 48:20Speaker 3: know exactly what that looks like. You guys saw that
- 48:22Speaker 3: a lot back in February, getting pressure with four against Mahomes.
- 48:27Speaker 3: That's what they're dealing with right now. On the offensive
- 48:30Speaker 3: side of the ball. Patrick Mahomes as good as he is,
- 48:32Speaker 3: like he can overcome one. Guys aren't getting separation, Well,
- 48:35Speaker 3: he can overcome that, not getting protection, not getting time.
- 48:39Speaker 3: He can overcome that, not getting separation and not getting
- 48:42Speaker 3: time in the pocket. You can't overcome that for the
- 48:44Speaker 3: most part as a quarterback, even if you're one of
- 48:47Speaker 3: the game's great That's where they find themselves right now
- 48:51Speaker 3: and they figure it out. I think maybe you know,
- 48:54Speaker 3: if there's a group that can quote figure it out.
- 48:57Speaker 3: It's Andy Reid, it's Patrick Mahomes, it's the people in
- 49:00Speaker 3: that building. They've shown an ability to do stuff like
- 49:02Speaker 3: that before. But it's getting late early, yeah, you know,
- 49:05Speaker 3: and when you're talking about they might be one in
- 49:07Speaker 3: three come October, that's a very scary place. They could
- 49:12Speaker 3: be three games back in the division, you know when
- 49:14Speaker 3: we absolutely wake up Wednesday morning, depending on what the
- 49:17Speaker 3: Chargers doing this week. Again, not a good place to
- 49:20Speaker 3: be and not any place where you used to see
- 49:22Speaker 3: in the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 49:23Speaker 1: Absolutely, boy, great discussion here, and again folks, we're talking
- 49:26Speaker 1: to Mark Scofield from SB Nation. Mark, let folks know
- 49:29Speaker 1: before we go to break here where they can find
- 49:31Speaker 1: you on the interwebs out there if they want to
- 49:33Speaker 1: catch what you're writing about in terms of football, in
- 49:35Speaker 1: terms of what you're writing about when it comes to
- 49:37Speaker 1: F one, let folks know where they can find you
- 49:39Speaker 1: out there.
- 49:40Speaker 3: Well, Jeff, the easiest places espimation dot com. But you know,
- 49:43Speaker 3: we're also sort of fractured. But at Mark Schoolfield on
- 49:46Speaker 3: Blue Sky, that's where I'm doing most of my stuff
- 49:49Speaker 3: right now. Like you said, there's the NFL, there's the
- 49:51Speaker 3: college stuff, there's the F one stuff. I broke some
- 49:53Speaker 3: Formula E news on Wednesday Moar with Felipe Drogovic confirmed
- 49:59Speaker 3: to Andre for next Formulae season. Longtime reserve at Aston
- 50:04Speaker 3: Martins F one team born something for see. I'll be
- 50:07Speaker 3: down in Austin in October for the United States Grand Prix,
- 50:10Speaker 3: my second time down there in Miami's toys. I was
- 50:13Speaker 3: at Austin last October. Hopefully getting back there this year,
- 50:16Speaker 3: you know, unless something changes. But yeah, Espidation dot call
- 50:19Speaker 3: at Mark Schofield and Blue Sky, those are the two
- 50:21Speaker 3: best places to find me.
- 50:22Speaker 1: All right, fantastic folks. We're gonna take a break when
- 50:24Speaker 1: we get back. More NFL talk coming your way. All right,
- 50:29Speaker 1: we are back again with Mark Schofield from ESB nation
- 50:32Speaker 1: dot com. Great content, great sports content all the time
- 50:36Speaker 1: over there. I'm want to stick with the AFC West
- 50:39Speaker 1: Division here, Mark. We were talking about the Chiefs right
- 50:41Speaker 1: before break, but the the Los Angeles Chargers here are
- 50:45Speaker 1: three and zero, and man, they have been pulling out
- 50:47Speaker 1: all the stops and the narrative really is right now.
- 50:50Speaker 1: Can Justin Herbert actually get this done this year and
- 50:53Speaker 1: prove that he can take this team deep into the
- 50:56Speaker 1: playoffs here, he's playing some pretty good football thus far.
- 51:00Speaker 1: But you know, as somebody who has assessed quarterbacks and
- 51:03Speaker 1: you are a student of the game, my friend, are
- 51:06Speaker 1: you seeing anything different with Justin Herbert this season? And
- 51:09Speaker 1: what are your overall thoughts on the Chargers moving forward here?
- 51:13Speaker 3: You know, I think it's it's stunning to consider this.
- 51:17Speaker 3: And I put this question to my son and my
- 51:21Speaker 3: wife on Monday. Last time the Chargers were three and oh,
- 51:26Speaker 3: do you know who their starting quarterback was?
- 51:28Speaker 2: Oh? My god? What was it was? This?
- 51:29Speaker 1: Stan Humphries.
- 51:32Speaker 3: Is Drew Brees?
- 51:33Speaker 1: Was it Drew Brees?
- 51:34Speaker 2: Oh?
- 51:34Speaker 3: It was Drew Brees. Okay, And you know what I
- 51:37Speaker 3: was doing the last time lost the Chargers franchise was
- 51:41Speaker 3: three and oh I was in my final year of
- 51:43Speaker 3: law school.
- 51:44Speaker 1: Oh my gosh.
- 51:45Speaker 3: Yeah, it was twenty wow, two thousand and two. It
- 51:49Speaker 3: was two thousand and two, the last year. It was
- 51:51Speaker 3: the first year of realignment, and by going to three
- 51:54Speaker 3: to zero and winning three games over division opponents, they're
- 51:57Speaker 3: the first team to do that since realigned.
- 51:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm was forgot Drewearies was on the Chargers, by
- 52:01Speaker 1: the way, I almost forgot.
- 52:03Speaker 3: That right, Like, like you know, you might have thought
- 52:06Speaker 3: that maybe it was Philip Rivers, Stan Humphrey's great guest,
- 52:09Speaker 3: great guest there. I love that call back. Now it
- 52:12Speaker 3: was Drew Brees back when you know the last time
- 52:15Speaker 3: the Chargers were three and oh and look as somebody
- 52:19Speaker 3: that loved Herbert coming out that that loves watching him
- 52:22Speaker 3: play and the way he plays the position. You know,
- 52:25Speaker 3: I mentioned that radio spot I do every Tuesday I'm
- 52:27Speaker 3: on in Vancouver every Tuesday afternoon. I've been doing that
- 52:31Speaker 3: radio spot for nine years now. Again reference to the
- 52:35Speaker 3: readers and the gray Hairs, and every every week they
- 52:38Speaker 3: asked me to kick off the set the spot. You know,
- 52:41Speaker 3: my throw of the week and his touchdown to Keenan Allen,
- 52:44Speaker 3: you know, late fourth quarter, one of the best throws
- 52:47Speaker 3: you will ever see from climb in the pocket, shrug
- 52:49Speaker 3: it off and defender to well to his left. These
- 52:52Speaker 3: are the types of things he can do. That being said,
- 52:57Speaker 3: we've been here before with the Chargers, right, every summer,
- 53:00Speaker 3: every fall it's Lucy with the football and I'm Charlie
- 53:04Speaker 3: Brown and I'm sprinted towards it. And in the back
- 53:07Speaker 3: of my mind, Jeff, there's just that fear that Lucy's
- 53:10Speaker 3: gonna pull it away again. That this team that we
- 53:13Speaker 3: love to hype off us in the media. And I
- 53:15Speaker 3: put myself firmly at the forefront of this because I
- 53:18Speaker 3: feel like every year I'm out there saying, yeah, this
- 53:21Speaker 3: is the year. You know, hardballs come in, it's gonna
- 53:24Speaker 3: be great. Yeah, but they do look very good right now.
- 53:28Speaker 3: And you know you talk about context, Well, you beat
- 53:32Speaker 3: the AFC champs in week one, ye, you win another
- 53:35Speaker 3: division game in week two. You know it's the Raiders,
- 53:37Speaker 3: but it's Monday night. Who In week three, you have
- 53:40Speaker 3: this comeback against a defense in Denver last year was
- 53:43Speaker 3: one of the best defenses in the league, and people
- 53:45Speaker 3: think is going to when all of siden don't be
- 53:47Speaker 3: one of the league's premier defenses yet again, you know,
- 53:49Speaker 3: maybe that hasn't fully born itself out through three weeks here,
- 53:52Speaker 3: but I think that Denver defense could still be good.
- 53:55Speaker 1: And they're three it.
- 53:56Speaker 3: Oh and again, you don't apologize for winning games, but
- 53:58Speaker 3: it's just in the back of my mind, there's that
- 54:01Speaker 3: fear that we've been here before. And whether it's you
- 54:04Speaker 3: know that they have a bad game down the stretch
- 54:08Speaker 3: or a couple bad games down the stretch, or like
- 54:10Speaker 3: they did a couple of years ago, they have that
- 54:11Speaker 3: dramatic loss in the playoffs where they blow a big
- 54:15Speaker 3: lead that they had in the first half to Jacksonville,
- 54:18Speaker 3: that at some point the other shoe is going to
- 54:20Speaker 3: drop with the team. But right now they look like
- 54:23Speaker 3: one of the best teams in the AFC. Will that continue?
- 54:26Speaker 3: I don't know, because again we've been here beforeward.
- 54:29Speaker 1: That absolutely absolutely all right, Well, I wanted to get
- 54:33Speaker 1: into some teams that are just really bad, quite frankly,
- 54:37Speaker 1: some teams that really just stink and that are continually
- 54:41Speaker 1: putting a bad product on the field. And I got
- 54:43Speaker 1: to tell you, Mark, every single year when I'm gonna
- 54:46Speaker 1: mention these three teams that we're going to go through
- 54:48Speaker 1: really quick here, every year I look at them and say,
- 54:51Speaker 1: you know what, I'm looking forward to seeing what they
- 54:53Speaker 1: do this year. I'm looking forward to seeing what changes
- 54:56Speaker 1: they've made, how they're going to remain at least consist
- 55:00Speaker 1: during part of a season. But they've remained consistently bad.
- 55:03Speaker 1: That's the one thing they've remained consistently with in terms
- 55:06Speaker 1: of these three teams. So I just want to get
- 55:09Speaker 1: your quick thoughts on these following teams, and you know
- 55:12Speaker 1: why they just continue to be so bad year after year.
- 55:15Speaker 1: Let's start off with the New York Jets. I mean,
- 55:17Speaker 1: it's just seems to be a perpetual storyline with them.
- 55:21Speaker 1: Bad team, bad organization, bad front office. What are your
- 55:24Speaker 1: thoughts here on the Jets and why they just continue
- 55:26Speaker 1: to think so much?
- 55:29Speaker 3: Well, I'm gonna cheat here, okay, Okay, because you know,
- 55:33Speaker 3: as we've done these shows over the years, you're always
- 55:35Speaker 3: so kind to sort of, you know, send over the
- 55:37Speaker 3: talking points, the questions you're going to ask. So I
- 55:39Speaker 3: got some time to sort of formulate things, and I
- 55:41Speaker 3: know the teams you're going to ask. Yes, the Jets,
- 55:44Speaker 3: the Saints, the Titans, Right, those are the three teams
- 55:46Speaker 3: you want to talk about it. Yes, there's a common
- 55:49Speaker 3: thread here. Okay, it's the quarterback position. Okay, it's the quarterback.
- 55:53Speaker 3: Think about the Jets. When was the last time they
- 55:55Speaker 3: really had stability at the quarterback position?
- 55:57Speaker 1: General Chad Pennington? Probably maybe Titans.
- 56:01Speaker 3: Yeah, like the Titans. Maybe maybe you'd say Tannehill, that
- 56:06Speaker 3: maybe Steve McNair McNair. And with the Saints, it's a
- 56:10Speaker 3: guy we just talked about Drew Brees again as we're
- 56:13Speaker 3: sitting here today on Wednesday, he's one of the first
- 56:16Speaker 3: time nominees up for ensrinment in the Hall of Fame. Yeah,
- 56:19Speaker 3: this year, next year's class. When you miss at the
- 56:24Speaker 3: quarterback position in a draft, like say, you know, the
- 56:29Speaker 3: maybe maybe you might say that the Jets did that.
- 56:32Speaker 3: You know, maybe you might with Zach Wilson. I think
- 56:34Speaker 3: that'd be a fair assistment. You might say that the
- 56:36Speaker 3: Titans did that with Marcus Mariota. You know, you're hoping
- 56:38Speaker 3: they don't do that, you know here with cam Ward
- 56:41Speaker 3: with just a couple of games in when you swit
- 56:43Speaker 3: did miss on a free agent, like it looks like
- 56:45Speaker 3: the Saints might have done with Derek Carr. When you're
- 56:47Speaker 3: trying to figure out the quarterback and now you're trying
- 56:49Speaker 3: to like race against time to bootstrapping QB after missing
- 56:54Speaker 3: a free agency it's going to take you some time
- 56:58Speaker 3: to get it right as organization. And so I know
- 57:01Speaker 3: I sort of cheated there, jumped ahead of you a bit.
- 57:03Speaker 3: But I think there's a common element here, which is
- 57:06Speaker 3: the importance of the quarterback position. That is interesting. There's
- 57:09Speaker 3: a fascinating story done. I think today or yesterday in
- 57:12Speaker 3: the athletic about you know, best frontal offices, and you know,
- 57:15Speaker 3: teams you kind of thought would be up there. Yeah,
- 57:17Speaker 3: you know, like Baltimore and certainly Philadelphia. A common threat
- 57:21Speaker 3: there is they figured quarterback out right, yep, you know,
- 57:25Speaker 3: because the sort of thesis of the of the you know,
- 57:28Speaker 3: the genesis question of that piece was, you know, who
- 57:30Speaker 3: is the best roster? Those are the teams that are
- 57:32Speaker 3: up there. A very good quarterback can hide some holes
- 57:35Speaker 3: on a roster, right, you know, and there were you
- 57:38Speaker 3: know there Ryan McCrystal, I believe his name. He's a
- 57:41Speaker 3: Browns affiliated typewriters a lot of draft stuff. He's saying, Look,
- 57:45Speaker 3: Browns have a great roster, but they don't have a quarterback.
- 57:47Speaker 3: That's why they're buried at the bottom of this list. Yeah,
- 57:50Speaker 3: you can build a great roster, but if you miss
- 57:53Speaker 3: on quarterback, it's going to be hard to overcome that.
- 57:56Speaker 3: And so I think with these three teams, the Saints,
- 57:58Speaker 3: the Jets, the Titans, they've missed on quarterback a couple
- 58:01Speaker 3: of different times. Now, whether it's draft, free agency, trades,
- 58:05Speaker 3: whatever the case may be, they haven't gotten those right.
- 58:08Speaker 3: They're still looking forward that answer at the game's biggest,
- 58:11Speaker 3: most important position, and all three teams are struggling. Yeah, now,
- 58:15Speaker 3: maybe cam Ward figures it out. Maybe he ends up
- 58:17Speaker 3: being the guy so that maybe Tennessee they come off
- 58:21Speaker 3: this list eventually, you know, New Orleans, maybe they figure
- 58:23Speaker 3: it out. Next year, the Jets, maybe they figure But
- 58:25Speaker 3: it's that importance of this position where if you don't
- 58:28Speaker 3: get it right, you're going to struggle, and you might
- 58:31Speaker 3: struggle for a couple of years until you fix it absolutely.
- 58:34Speaker 1: And I don't know why people just don't listen to
- 58:36Speaker 1: our friend Matt Waldman more. I'm not even kidding these
- 58:39Speaker 1: front offices. I remember Zach Wilson coming out. I remember
- 58:43Speaker 1: having Matt on the show and we specifically were talking
- 58:45Speaker 1: about the intricacies of Zach Wilson's footwork. I remember that.
- 58:49Speaker 1: I remember talking to my best friend who's a Jets fan,
- 58:52Speaker 1: and I'm like, you gotta watch this year and even
- 58:55Speaker 1: in subsequent years Zack Wilson's footwork and consistently it was trendous.
- 59:00Speaker 1: He just wasn't able to get it done for whatever reason.
- 59:03Speaker 1: I feel bad for him. It just didn't work out.
- 59:05Speaker 1: Didn't work out for the Jets. More people need to
- 59:07Speaker 1: listen to our friend Matt Wolden than I think at
- 59:09Speaker 1: the end.
- 59:09Speaker 3: I mean, I don't know if Matt would want to
- 59:12Speaker 3: do it. I don't know if Matt would want to
- 59:13Speaker 3: do it, but it bog was my mind that a
- 59:15Speaker 3: team hasn't backed up the Brinks truck to Matt's house
- 59:17Speaker 3: and said, look, just scout for us, Yes, ynestly right,
- 59:22Speaker 3: look and Matt will tell you, yes, he's got something's wrong. Yeah,
- 59:25Speaker 3: nobody like you talk about Russell Wilson like he was
- 59:29Speaker 3: one of the first, if not the only one pre draft. Is, Look,
- 59:33Speaker 3: this guy's going to be something. I still remember the
- 59:35Speaker 3: show that Matt and I did on Patrick Maholmes. I
- 59:37Speaker 3: everybody thought it would never work in the NFL, and
- 59:40Speaker 3: he and I, you can watch this film, just giggled
- 59:42Speaker 3: for like ninety minutes straight on how like special this
- 59:45Speaker 3: kid could be in the National Football League. Matt does
- 59:47Speaker 3: a very very very good jobs, done a very very
- 59:51Speaker 3: very good job scout in the quarterback decision. And look,
- 59:54Speaker 3: he's not perfect, right, but I'd put his record up
- 59:57Speaker 3: against the NFL's writ.
- 59:58Speaker 1: Large, absolutely absolutely. That's why I brought it up. I
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: didn't even think I would. But in talking about this,
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: I mean, the quarterback position is just so so important
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: as we know, but it, you know, it just goes
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: to show that, you know, you could. You have these
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: guys who are in these positions in the front office,
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: you have scouting departments as well. There's some teams that
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: just don't know how to properly evaluate talent at times
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: or they're.
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: Just NFL teams have the resources to hire people to
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: talk to your kindergarten teacher. Yeah, they will hire people
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: to follow you on flights, to visit other teams or
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: team facilities to see how you behave with gate agents
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: and ticket counter agents, to see what kind of person
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: you're like when the bright lights are on or when
- 1:00:40Speaker 3: you don't think you're being They have the resources to
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: do whatever they want to do when it comes to
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: a value in quarterbacks, and they still, armed with all
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: this information, don't get it right, Yeah, because it's so hard.
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: I mean I talk with other people in the industry
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: all the time, Like you know, I'm known for quarterback
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: evaluation or all that. I always don't want to do
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: it anymore, especially when it comes to the draft, because
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: it's just so hard, and the teams get it wrong,
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: and ultimately what decides it are you know, the ten
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: inches between a person's you know, one side of the
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: head to the other, like that individual's like brain and
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: how they acclimate and all of that stuff. I can't
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: get in there. NFL teams sometimes can't get in there.
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: It's just sometimes you might have all the ability in
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: the world that it just doesn't click for whatever reason.
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: Sometimes you might need a couple of years and then
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: you find yourself in the right spot. Like it's just
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: so hard to get the quarterback evaluation couldp on it right.
- 1:01:35Speaker 3: And if you don't get it right, these teams like
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: the Jets, the Saints, Titans, you might be foundering.
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: For a while.
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, all right, buddy. Well, before I let you go,
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: want to talk about which teams have been the biggest
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: disappointments thus far here as we're heading into week four,
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: and also the team that's been the biggest surprise for you.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: So let's start off with team that has been the
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: biggest disappointment for you. I can tell you. For me,
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: it's been the Raiders. It was between Raider Raiders and
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: the Broncos. I really thought the Broncos were going to
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: show us a lot more right out of the gate
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: this season. Also thought the Raiders were going to do
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: the same. What are your thoughts on the biggest disappointment
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: out of the gate this season?
- 1:02:11Speaker 3: Yeah, see, I mean you picked it at the Raiders.
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: For me, Yeah, I wrote in our we had like
- 1:02:19Speaker 3: a fifty story NFL preview at Aspenation dot com and
- 1:02:23Speaker 3: one of the stories I wrote was why I'm buying
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: the Raiders. I was all in on this team. I
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: was all in on everything they did, the culture change.
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: I wrote about culture shifts and business decisions, Parngino and
- 1:02:34Speaker 3: Pete again. And look they're one and two and they
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: look lost right now. Yeah, and I'm very you know,
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: disappointed in the Raiders. I thought they might contend in
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: the division. That's how high I was on them. Now
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: maybe it's just I was wildly wrong, and through three
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: games it looks like I was wildly wrong. But yeah,
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: it's the Raiders for me. I mean you can say
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: Kansas City hasn't been you know where they're staring at
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: one and three like that's certainly disappointed. You know, Denver
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: hasn't been as good as we thought they were going
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: to be perhaps, But for me it's the Raiders because
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: I was all in on everything they did this offseason.
- 1:03:08Speaker 3: I was totally buyed into it. Maybe you know I
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: fell for hook Cloude and Sinker.
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: All Right, Well, what's the team that's been the biggest
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: surprise for you this far?
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: This is Indianapolis, right, Yeah, there you go.
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: I Daniel Jones man Indiana Jones.
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: I mean it's I mean, it's a great nickname. It's fantastic.
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: I love to see it. And look, I'm happy for
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: him because obviously did it and the way he would
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: have liked in New York. And I think it's sustainable.
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: I really do. I I know a lot of people
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: are starting to look at their schedules saying, well, can
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: are we going to see a drop off? They got
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: a lot of winnable games coming up. He's played extremely
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: well from the pocket. He's playing extremely well under pressure
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: in the pocket, which I think was part of his
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: game that wasn't always there for him. And it's not
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: just running around and trying to make plays. It's like
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: under pressure in the pocket itself is making some big plays.
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: And so I've been very surprised by them. And ya. Look,
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: you beat Miami, maybe that doesn't carry a lot of weight.
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: You beat Tennessee, maybe doesn't carry a lot of weight.
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: You beat Denver, that was an impressive one. You beat
- 1:04:11Speaker 3: the teams in fel you know you beat and again
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: it's a theme of the show, right, you don't apologize
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: for winning games. Right, you beat the teams that are
- 1:04:18Speaker 3: on your schedule. You're three to zero for a reason.
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: Your quarterback's playing well. Is it sustainable?
