Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So now we know that there is quite a bit
- 0:02Speaker 1: in the budget for Central Australia. And joining me on
- 0:04Speaker 1: the line right now is the Member Falling Gillari Marion Scrimjaw.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Good morning to you, Marion. Good morning Katie.
- 0:11Speaker 1: How are you very well? And I'm guessing that you
- 0:14Speaker 1: are too with the announcement that there's quite a bit
- 0:16Speaker 1: of funding in the federal budget for Central Australia.
- 0:20Speaker 2: I think there's there's money in the budget for the
- 0:22Speaker 2: for the Northern Territory. Katie. What we've seen is the
- 0:26Speaker 2: biggest investment and in terms of infrastructure spend into the
- 0:31Speaker 2: Northern Territory, which has been fantastic to get that commitment
- 0:36Speaker 2: from you know, the Prime Minister, from the Treasurer, from
- 0:40Speaker 2: the Assistant Treasurer, from our labor caucus, everyone's supported. It's
- 0:46Speaker 2: been a marathon effort and I'm certainly wrapped that for
- 0:54Speaker 2: the first time in a long time, the Northern Territory
- 0:58Speaker 2: has been seen as are really important and it's not
- 1:03Speaker 2: just about marginal seats. I think it's about if we
- 1:07Speaker 2: want to grow our economy, if we want to pick
- 1:09Speaker 2: our people up, and you know, the cheaper childcare, there's
- 1:15Speaker 2: the cheaper medicines. There's all of you know, the cost
- 1:18Speaker 2: of living plan that's been put in place, and I think,
- 1:22Speaker 2: you know, as well as the infrastructure investment. I think
- 1:25Speaker 2: we can turn around what's been a really dire time
- 1:31Speaker 2: for us in the Northern territory. So some great investment, Katie.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Now Marion talk us through. I know that there is
- 1:37Speaker 1: there's obviously three hundred and fifty million dollars of additional
- 1:41Speaker 1: funding to continue the work of sealing the Tanner Mind
- 1:44Speaker 1: also Central Anam Roads. But then there's three hundred and
- 1:46Speaker 1: thirty two million towards the Anti Strategic Roads package, which
- 1:50Speaker 1: includes one hundred and thirty two million to upgrade and
- 1:54Speaker 1: seal the Marini Loop. This is something that you know
- 1:57Speaker 1: that we have wanted to see for quite some time,
- 2:00Speaker 1: isn't it.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Oh? Look absolutely, And you know we've also got to
- 2:05Speaker 2: make sure that because the federal government, well it's putting
- 2:09Speaker 2: this funding on the table, we need to make sure
- 2:12Speaker 2: that the Northern Tarasheed delivers. It's because they are the
- 2:16Speaker 2: you know, the government that is the provider of making
- 2:19Speaker 2: sure that those roads get built. They are strategic roads,
- 2:22Speaker 2: they're important roads. I mean Marini Loop, there's also some
- 2:26Speaker 2: feeder roads from that with some communities in Central Australia
- 2:31Speaker 2: where tourism and other opportunities can happen for those communities.
- 2:36Speaker 2: That's part of that three hundred and thirty two million.
- 2:39Speaker 2: There's roads and spend for Man and Grida in and
- 2:44Speaker 2: around the Catherine region Katie, so it's sort of you know, spread.
- 2:48Speaker 2: We've tried to spread this as much as we can,
- 2:52Speaker 2: including the Central Arnham Road which is an important road.
- 2:56Speaker 2: So we just need to make sure odd that we've
- 3:00Speaker 2: got the capability to deliver these roads. Project. It's not
- 3:05Speaker 2: just about government, it's about our private sector because I
- 3:08Speaker 2: think that's what's important in all of this is to
- 3:12Speaker 2: give this money to the private sector so that it
- 3:14Speaker 2: creates jobs and an economy for them.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Marion, how soon are we going to see some of
- 3:20Speaker 1: this work on those roads roll out, because as you
- 3:23Speaker 1: pointed out, it's incredibly important worksoutely well.
- 3:27Speaker 2: One of the things Katie, I'm going to be doing
- 3:30Speaker 2: is sitting down with Evil Lawla and hopefully with her department,
- 3:34Speaker 2: but Catherine King, who's the Minister for Infrastructure. We're going
- 3:39Speaker 2: to be doing a trip out the Tantama with EVA
- 3:42Speaker 2: next week and I think we'll have some discussions about
- 3:46Speaker 2: putting a timeline to some of these important road networks
- 3:52Speaker 2: and how do we then go to tender because I
- 3:54Speaker 2: think that needs to happen straight away. People have waited
- 3:59Speaker 2: for a long time. I think the top end some
- 4:01Speaker 2: of those roads may not be able to happen quickly, Katie,
- 4:04Speaker 2: particularly with the onset of the wet season, But there's
- 4:09Speaker 2: nothing stopping us from doing, you know, down in the center.
- 4:13Speaker 2: But you know, I'm going to make sure that we're
- 4:15Speaker 2: all working together to get this job done and to
- 4:20Speaker 2: get it done properly, because you know, the Northern Territory
- 4:23Speaker 2: has needed these infrastructure. Our small companies, businesses across the NT.
- 4:29Speaker 2: This is fantastic news because they can benefit from this,
- 4:33Speaker 2: and they should. We need to make sure that these
- 4:35Speaker 2: businesses benefits from this infrastructure spend, Katie, that it's not
- 4:39Speaker 2: just in government coffers, but it goes to the business
- 4:42Speaker 2: and the you know, the community, so that they can
- 4:47Speaker 2: certainly benefit from that. But we get these roads built.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, it has to, you know, and I think
- 4:53Speaker 1: that's what we all want to see. Now. I want
- 4:55Speaker 1: to ask as well, we know that domestic violence is
- 4:59Speaker 1: a shue huge issue in the Northern Territory. We've spoken
- 5:03Speaker 1: about it at length yesterday we're speaking to Dawn House.
- 5:06Speaker 1: I know that there was a four Corners report on
- 5:09Speaker 1: the terrible incidents that we have seen in the Northern Territory.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Marian.
- 5:13Speaker 1: I understand that there is going to be some increased
- 5:15Speaker 1: funding as well for domestic violence, and this is something
- 5:19Speaker 1: that that you know that the Northern Territory, the Minister
- 5:22Speaker 1: as well here Kate Warden, has been calling for for
- 5:25Speaker 1: additional funding based on needs rather than per capita when
- 5:29Speaker 1: it comes to domestic violence.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Yeah. Look, Katie, can I say it's great. For the
- 5:36Speaker 2: first time I think in a long time, we're seeing
- 5:38Speaker 2: federal leadership in terms of you know, one point three
- 5:41Speaker 2: nion for the national plan you know, to end gender violence,
- 5:45Speaker 2: and that's that's really important. I think out of that
- 5:50Speaker 2: we will have a specific average on toast Rat Island,
- 5:53Speaker 2: a plan which people have been calling for for some time.
- 5:57Speaker 2: That we have a plan, but we have dedicated money
- 6:00Speaker 2: so that we can make inroads into this scourg right
- 6:04Speaker 2: across you know, nationally and federally. So it was great
- 6:08Speaker 2: to see, you know, and I have to acknowledge Minister
- 6:11Speaker 2: Rishworth and Minister Katie Gallagher who's done a lot of
- 6:15Speaker 2: workers as the Minister for the Status of Women in
- 6:19Speaker 2: this issue. So there's also with as four thousand homes
- 6:25Speaker 2: Katie across you know Australia for women fleeing domestic violence
- 6:31Speaker 2: or people fleeing domestic violence, which is really important. I
- 6:36Speaker 2: know that we need serious resourcing in their territory for
- 6:39Speaker 2: our domestic violence providers. We had a round table before
- 6:43Speaker 2: the election and I'm keen to get back talking through
- 6:47Speaker 2: anti costs and a lot of those providers, the need
- 6:51Speaker 2: for funding based on needs and to make sure that
- 6:54Speaker 2: we continue to get the resources for those organizations because
- 6:59Speaker 2: they do a fantastic job in supporting women and children,
- 7:04Speaker 2: but also making sure that you know, everyone's going to
- 7:07Speaker 2: be kept say so, I'll continue to work with Minister
- 7:12Speaker 2: Rishworth federally but also Minister Warden about how do we
- 7:17Speaker 2: get the Northern Territory government and releasing some of that
- 7:20Speaker 2: money from within community services but anti government, you know,
- 7:27Speaker 2: getting some putting the resources or matching those resources with
- 7:31Speaker 2: the federal government so that communities and organizations can benefit. Katie.
- 7:38Speaker 2: But it's it's a it's a start it's sure, it's
- 7:42Speaker 2: not enough, and we need to keep working on it.
- 7:45Speaker 2: But one point three B and that wasn't there before
- 7:49Speaker 2: the election, that's now there, and we can we can
- 7:52Speaker 2: start some making some inroads in the national plan. Katie,
- 7:58Speaker 2: there is you mention of and we need to have
- 8:03Speaker 2: a look at the resourcing because I think when we
- 8:06Speaker 2: talk about domestic and family violence, we have to look
- 8:10Speaker 2: at how do we get programmed to change the behavior
- 8:14Speaker 2: of men, and how do we get our men to
- 8:17Speaker 2: stop thinking that this is their right to continue to
- 8:20Speaker 2: do this, and you know, making sure that we're making
- 8:24Speaker 2: inroads into male behavior in this in this area.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Now, Marian, when you talk about those four thousand homes
- 8:34Speaker 1: across Australia, do we know how many of those are
- 8:36Speaker 1: going to be in the Northern Territory.
- 8:39Speaker 3: No, but I'll be making sure we get a fair
- 8:41Speaker 3: Shackati that it's not just it's not just going to
- 8:46Speaker 3: the East and Sea border elsewhere, but certainly looking at
- 8:50Speaker 3: the Northern Territory and making sure.
- 8:54Speaker 2: That we get our fair share. And you know, I
- 8:57Speaker 2: want to also acknowledge my other two federal members, Senator
- 9:03Speaker 2: McCarthy and also Luke Gosling. We're all working together to
- 9:07Speaker 2: be a really strong voice for the Northern Territory to
- 9:10Speaker 2: make sure that, particularly in relation to this issue, that
- 9:14Speaker 2: the Northern Territory gets it's for share out of the
- 9:19Speaker 2: money that's been put on the table.
- 9:21Speaker 1: I think it's essential. You know, when you look at
- 9:23Speaker 1: the scourge of domestic violence in the Northern Territory, it
- 9:26Speaker 1: is going to be essential.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Marian.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Before I let you go, is there anything in the
- 9:30Speaker 1: budget to assist Central Australia, particularly when it comes to
- 9:34Speaker 1: the high rates of crime that is being experienced at
- 9:37Speaker 1: the moment.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Yeah, it looks the one hundred and twenty minion that
- 9:41Speaker 2: was put on the that is there for the Central
- 9:43Speaker 2: Australian Regional Development Plan OCASION. In addition to that, there's
- 9:49Speaker 2: fourteen million dollars to immediately which will go to the
- 9:54Speaker 2: Allice Springs Town Council and that'll look at the crime
- 9:58Speaker 2: prevention program that we had talked to the council and
- 10:03Speaker 2: the police and the other and the business community Chamber,
- 10:07Speaker 2: so that fourteen manion will be rolled out in terms
- 10:11Speaker 2: of and provided immediately to the council to start looking
- 10:16Speaker 2: at putting those crime prevention programs in place in particularly
- 10:22Speaker 2: Alice Spring.
- 10:23Speaker 1: How are things going from your perspective when you talk
- 10:26Speaker 1: about crime in Alice at the moment.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Look, I think Alice has got its issues and I
- 10:32Speaker 2: was you know, there's I've received and I was in
- 10:36Speaker 2: in Catherine not long ago. There's issues in Catherine, Katie,
- 10:40Speaker 2: there's issues in ten and Creek. We've just got to
- 10:44Speaker 2: work through and make sure that we've got you know,
- 10:47Speaker 2: there's a lot of young people running around. Do we
- 10:52Speaker 2: have the places in which to put these young people?
- 10:55Speaker 2: This is a body of work and conversations that I'm
- 11:00Speaker 2: keen to take up with the Northern Territory government about
- 11:03Speaker 2: making some inroads into you know, so that businesses because
- 11:08Speaker 2: this is impacting on small businesses and businesses right across
- 11:13Speaker 2: our region in terms of their insurances. Because people are
- 11:16Speaker 2: having to replace broken glasses. You know, their windows have
- 11:21Speaker 2: been shattered and broken, they've been you know, people are
- 11:24Speaker 2: people are really fatigued out there, and we've got to
- 11:27Speaker 2: do whatever it takes to assist each of these communities.
- 11:33Speaker 2: So people, because everyone's got the right to feel safety.
- 11:36Speaker 2: And Look, it's and it's not just Alice Springs, it's
- 11:40Speaker 2: right across the Northern Territory and I'm looking forward to
- 11:44Speaker 2: getting back to Catherine, but also ten and Creek. So
- 11:48Speaker 2: I'm leaving Canberra to go to ten and Creek. And
- 11:50Speaker 2: I know that there's been some issues in ten and Creek.
- 11:53Speaker 2: So you know we've got to get it or we
- 11:58Speaker 2: can deal with this well.
- 12:00Speaker 1: I agree. I mean we've got to get this issue
- 12:02Speaker 1: sorted because I think it's causing so much pain for
- 12:06Speaker 1: so many Territorians at the moment. Marion Scrimjaw, the Member
- 12:10Speaker 1: for Lingiari, the Federal Member for Lingiari, we really appreciate
- 12:14Speaker 1: your time this morning. Thanks so much for having a
- 12:15Speaker 1: chat with us.
- 12:17Speaker 2: No, look, thank you, Katie. And remember two point five
- 12:21Speaker 2: billion dollars their biggest investment in the Northern Territory for infrastructure.
- 12:26Speaker 2: I think that that needs to be cele of. Brodon.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Thank you, Marian. We appreciate your time this morninge It
- 12:33Speaker 1: is just nineteen minutes away from ten o'clock coming your way. Next,
- 12:37Speaker 1: the Lord Mayor of Darwin Convat Scarlas Frendon, Jonesie Joe,
- 12:41Speaker 1: and Amanda Keller Jo.
- 12:44Speaker 2: The celebrity who's been outed as being a terrible person
- 12:47Speaker 2: is James Cordon.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Half an hour into a new York to London flight
- 12:51Speaker 1: passengers were surprised to see Cordon remain seated as a
- 12:53Speaker 1: woman with the baby struggled to open the overhead locker
