- 0:02A listener production.
- 0:04Welcome to the Motorsport Brief.
- 0:06It's Thursday the 16th of November 2023.
- 0:09While all eyes are on Vegas this weekend and the much-hyped return of Formula One, we're also gearing up for the title-deciding round of supercars next weekend in Adelaide.
- 0:20Today, the young driver who claimed a special place in the record books last year, taking the final ever win for Holden and Commodore, will join us on the shortcast.
- 0:32G'day, it's Rusty here with another edition of the Garage Motorsport Brief.
- 0:36Well done to everybody involved in the Speed Series doubleheader at Sydney Motorsport Park and Bathurst over the past two weeks.
- 0:44It was awesome having the international drivers here as a part of the TCR World Tour.
- 0:49They were fantastic in the broadcast.
- 0:51They jumped at the chance to be involved in stories between events.
- 0:56And the racing was fierce.
- 0:58It was a good shot in the arm for TCR Australia.
- 1:01Now, we'll have more on the crowning of the new Aussie champion later in this episode.
- 1:06Our latest long-form or feature edition of Rusty's Garage is out too, with the Slide King, or the Sultan of Slide, Gary McCoy, which we've had lots of requests for.
- 1:17The former 500cc and 125cc Grand Prix winner was fantastic, from making those trademark slides effective in racing to training the next generation as a part of his involvement in the Oceania Junior Challenge.
- 1:32I also recorded an ep with legendary touring car racer Gabriele Tarquini while I was at Bathurst.
- 1:38The former world champion was incredible.
- 1:40incredibly passionate and his memories of the BTCC in that Alfa Romeo in the early 90s I know you will really enjoy.
- 1:48We'll also release Marty Kragle next month too from wild card rides on 500cc machines in the Aussie GP to wowing some big names in the sport in his early days.
- 2:00His massive crash at the island and the long road to recovery physically and mentally plus the successful business
- 2:08he's now in and how he's using lots of the learnings from his time in motorcycle racing in the company now to today's guest part of the new breed of supercars stars brock feeney has only just turned 21 crazy we need to keep that in mind he's already in the front line for one of the biggest teams in the sport with a huge future ahead of him
- 2:31He is gearing up to return to Adelaide next week for all the pre-event promotion that goes with being a winner there and on a mission to go back to back as well.
- 2:41Brock, welcome.
- 2:43It is fantastic to get you on the pod, mate.
- 2:45It's been a long time coming, I feel, but we're finally here.
- 2:48Hey, terrific memory that popped up of you recently.
- 2:51I think it's you, your dad, hugging maybe after the race in Adelaide last year.
- 2:56Where does that rank for you in career highlights so far?
- 3:01Yeah, I think it is at the top.
- 3:03I mean, I feel like I've had some pretty cool moments over the years, but to win in Adelaide the last race last year and to have my family there to celebrate.
- 3:14Some friends were there.
- 3:15Jack Doohan was there actually, so it was a pretty special day, but...
- 3:19And I mean, all you want to do is get into supercars, but it's not, you know, you want to win.
- 3:24And to get that first win was unreal.
- 3:27And look, you're never going to, well, you know, I'm never going to be able to get my first ever win in supercars again.
- 3:33And I feel like I picked a pretty good event to do it.
- 3:36Yeah, you sure did.
- 3:36I mean, you'd won Dunlop Series the year before, you'd made that high-profile step up to Jamie Wincup's drive.
- 3:43I mean, Adelaide, year one, such a competitive game, as you've just detailed, among all of those well-sorted then Gen 2 cars on the grid.
- 3:52It must have felt quite surreal to win that.
- 3:56Yeah, no, it was special.
- 3:58Look, I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to win one last year.
- 4:01Like, I know I'd come in and, you know, I just wanted to learn and learn the ropes and everything, but I did want to get a win and it was sort of the one box that I hadn't ticked, so...
- 4:10To leave it to the last race, sort of took it down to the wire.
- 4:15But honestly, I'm privileged to be the last ever Holden winner.
- 4:20I mean, there's so much more to it than just winning my first race, the last one for Holden, the first one back at Adelaide, and for me, the last race in my rookie season.
- 4:29So I felt like I ticked a lot of boxes.
- 4:31I'm sure when I'm 40 years down the track, a bit older, and telling stories, it should be a good one to tell, I hope.
- 4:39give us a report card on the 2023 season for you to this point.
- 4:43We'll get to, I guess, how brutal Bathurst was in a moment, but broadly speaking, how happy you are or things that you felt like you needed to do more of.
- 4:53Just give us an overview.
- 4:55Yeah, look, I think overall I should be happy.
- 4:59I remember sitting down with Paul Morris at the end of last year and he said, look, you've done a great rookie season.
- 5:05He goes, it's just about stepping up next year and...
- 5:07I felt like I did make that step this year to battle for race wins and on the podium and in the championship fight for most of the year.
- 5:15But look, I'm stoked with the progression that we've made, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little disappointed that we fell out of the championship race.
- 5:24I mean, we clawed our way back from the start of the year.
- 5:26I think we were 26 points away at Townsville and...
- 5:30We had a couple of bad rounds in the middle and it sort of put us on the back foot.
- 5:33But we tried to make it back at Sandown and Bathurst.
- 5:36I mean, got the 300 points at Sandown and yeah, we're looking to get some points at Bathurst.
- 5:41But look, it wasn't meant to be obviously this year, but I've taken a lot from it.
- 5:46I think I've certainly proven to myself that I can be in the title fight.
- 5:51And mate, I love having that feeling of trying to race for a championship and race for wins.
- 5:57It's a lot of fun.
- 5:59I'm glad you brought up Sandown.
- 6:01You appreciate how historically significant that race and that place is.
- 6:05That too must be right up there.
- 6:07Yeah, it is for sure.
- 6:08I mean, that's probably one of my biggest wins.
- 6:11To win that race and to do it with Jamie is very special.
- 6:16And, look, you don't know how long the race is going to be around for.
- 6:19To do it in my first 500 as well, it was...
- 6:24Look, we were just two bikes going racing and we were having fun that week.
- 6:27I mean, we'd had a ball a couple of weeks leading up to it.
- 6:31We got there Friday, everything felt great and we hit the ground running.
- 6:34It felt like it was sort of meant to be that weekend.
- 6:36We had a real strong weekend, but it was
- 6:39sort of two teams going at it.
- 6:41So to pull that off the way it did at the end, I mean, without the safety car, I feel like it would have been a little nicer to the finish line, but for me to personally to do it with that pressure at the end, it felt great.
- 6:53And look, I said, I don't know if Brock of 12 months ago would have hang on to that, but yeah, I felt like I've made a step forward in that department.
- 7:01Just tell me about working with Jamie there too.
- 7:03I mean, he's a competitive athlete.
- 7:05He always has been.
- 7:07Looked like he'd lost not a lot, really, being in that management role for the rest of the year fundamentally.
- 7:14What was it like working with him in that way?
- 7:17Because I would imagine he was allowing you to lead and that he would complement you around the edges.
- 7:24Was it sort of collaborative?
- 7:25How did you go about that weekend and Bathurst?
- 7:27Yeah, it's very much a team effort, I suppose, between me and Jamie.
- 7:30And I suppose it's different to a lot of other main drivers and their co-drivers because the main driver's leading their co-drivers so much of the time.
- 7:38But to me and Jamie, it just feels 50-50.
- 7:41Like, we're just working on it the best we can for each other.
- 7:45And the thing that I love working with him about, it's obviously the race weekend, but it's all the stuff leading up to it.
- 7:50Yeah.
- 7:51his preparation and his attention to detail.
- 7:54Like we sat in the car Thursday night at Sandown and we're like, far out, like everything's very good.
- 7:59You know what I mean?
- 8:00Like everything felt awesome.
- 8:01All the little changes that we'd made were great.
- 8:03And,
- 8:04It just sets you up for a good weekend.
- 8:07Yeah, as I said, we just had a lot of fun together, and the result paid off.
- 8:11But, man, what he did on track was unbelievable.
- 8:14I could not believe it.
- 8:16I should believe it because of who he is and what he's done, but watching him do it after a couple of years out of the state was pretty special, and, yeah, I'm pretty lucky to have him as my partner in the two big events.
- 8:28Most definitely.
- 8:29You mentioned before about that little feeling of perhaps disappointment about not being at the final round in the championship fight, given the rest of the year that you've had.
- 8:39What happens now?
- 8:40Do you sort of, in a team sense, help Shane or is the lure of you going back to Adelaide and trying to finish the year with another win a little greater?
- 8:53Yeah, I suppose there's a bit of everything in that.
- 8:56Look, for sure we want Shane to win the championship and we want to win the team's championship as well.
- 9:01So we'll do whatever we can to make sure that happens.
- 9:07But at the same time, I'm fighting Will for third in the championship.
- 9:10I'm only nine points off him and he's going to be my teammate next year, so I want to beat him to the championship.
- 9:17But at the same time, look, you want to...
- 9:20I want to try and win the race.
- 9:22I want to try and I'd love to stand on the podium again at Adelaide.
- 9:26But as I said, look, driver's championship and team's championship is going to be the number one priority.
- 9:32But for me also, I want to wrap up third and, and yeah, I'd love to be back out there.
- 9:38Is it nice to be considered in that new wave of youngsters?
- 9:42I mean, for all three of you, you know, Brodie and Will, to be on the podium there at one stage during the year, it felt like for many of us that have been around the game for a little while that that new wave had arrived, Brock.
- 9:55Yeah, it is cool to see.
- 9:57And look, when I do get up on the podium with those three lads, it's pretty cool to realise how young we are and you see the stories come out.
- 10:03I think we were the youngest average podium.
- 10:05So that's pretty cool and it's special to be a part of that.
- 10:08And look, I just hope that it promotes more young kids and gives them the opportunity and shows teams that some young guys can get in and do it.
- 10:19So it's great to see some new kids coming in next year.
- 10:22I know we've got Woody coming in and...
- 10:24um aaron live and a few other guys so it's awesome to see i mean we i'm not worried about my age like i don't think about my age at all but it's i if it can do anything i hope it um promotes some more younger kids to get in the main game great outlook that's terrific much has been said about the new cars this year as someone with a kind of fresher set of eyes in supercars maybe not um
- 10:46you know, massively attached to the older generation machines, if that's fair to say.
- 10:52How have you found them this year?
- 10:53And after the tweak that the Mustangs had for the Gold Coast, how much closer are you expecting the fight in Adelaide to be with them?
- 11:01Yes, it's been an interesting year and we've come such a long way from where we were at Newcastle.
- 11:07I mean, we were
- 11:09we were fighting these cars at the start of the year.
- 11:11We were, we were getting that hot at the start of the year.
- 11:14The races were super long.
- 11:16Uh, it was hard work, but I feel like where we've got to now, we're in a pretty good spot with the cars.
- 11:20And, um, for me, I think I'm lucky that I didn't have 10 years in these old cars and was so, was not stuck to my way in the old car, but I sort of got in this car and it, you know, just sort of got on with it and I tried not to think about it.
- 11:35I mean, I saw a lot of talk this year about cars, so, um,
- 11:39I just tried to focus on doing my job the best that I could.
- 11:41And, yeah, where I could try and help improve the car, I'd let the team know.
- 11:46But it's been interesting.
- 11:48I mean, obviously, there's been a lot of talk about the differences between the two cars, but they were super competitive at Gold Coast.
- 11:54So I think you can expect the same at Adelaide.
- 11:57I think it's going to be the same sort of guys in the mix.
- 12:01Look, it's similar in ways, but it's going to be interesting.
- 12:05And then it's all going to change in a month's time.
- 12:07Well, maybe.
- 12:08We'll see what happens.
- 12:09How have you dealt with the heartbreak of Bathurst?
- 12:13I think it doesn't change the result, Brock, but that raw, that very real interview that you did with Chad Nalon, that is a credit to you.
- 12:21It gave us a very authentic sense of how you felt at the time.
- 12:25You've had some time to reflect now on it.
- 12:28How do you feel?
- 12:30Yeah, I mean, talking about it still hurts.
- 12:33Does it?
- 12:33There's no lie about that.
- 12:35Every time I see someone, they bring it up.
- 12:38But that's okay.
- 12:40Look, the support was unreal and I really appreciate everyone reaching out.
- 12:45Yeah, obviously now it's gone.
- 12:47It's done.
- 12:47I'm trying to forget about it.
- 12:49But, yeah, at the time it hurt.
- 12:53dream of being at Bathurst and being in the mix with you know one stint to go and all you say is you got to be there at the end of the race with the clean car and um we've seemed of the top three we were the one with the least problems throughout the day so um yeah look it's gutting mate but um I'm trying to trying to move on from it I think the the week afterwards I just tried not to think about race cars one bit but um
- 13:17We're back on the horse now.
- 13:19I've been back in the gym and just trying to really put my head down for this last race because I really want to finish the year on a high and go into next year with some good confidence.
- 13:30and people can't see this because this is an audio experience, but I know your smile kind of belies immense determination in that, mate.
- 13:38So we wish you well in Adelaide.
- 13:40A few more here if we can.
- 13:42You've spent, you know, lots of time with Shane over the years, both at Norwell and now as a teammate.
- 13:48You're very much your own person, right?
- 13:50But what are the takeaways, the things that you've perhaps learnt from SVG that you might take into 2024 and beyond?
- 13:57Yeah, there's a lot, mate.
- 13:58I mean...
- 14:00It's, look, I'm so stoked for him that he's going to do this NASCAR thing.
- 14:04And I think everyone is.
- 14:06Everyone, you know, he really wants to do this.
- 14:08And I'm stoked to see him so happy to do it.
- 14:10But at the same time, I'm upset that we're losing him.
- 14:14Not only me, but I think the sport's losing him.
- 14:18He's been a great ambassador for the sport and what he's done.
- 14:21And what he's done for me has been awesome, I mean.
- 14:24he probably doesn't notice it, but just him driving and me getting to look at his data and video, you know, is a massive help and to be able to see everything and what he's done the last few years.
- 14:33I mean, last year, I mean, he was at 21 wins or something ridiculous, like just out of control.
- 14:39Like, I don't know if that one will ever be beaten.
- 14:43That's a pretty, that's a pretty good record.
- 14:45But, um...
- 14:46Yeah, just to see him do his craft has been awesome.
- 14:49And for me, to be there as a rookie, just to try and learn off him has been pretty special.
- 14:53So, yeah, there's plenty of times we're super open.
- 14:56I mean, that's the great thing about the team.
- 14:58It's open, it goes both ways.
- 14:59And for me, to be able to learn off a guy like him has been pretty awesome.
- 15:04And, yeah, let's hope I can keep leaning on him in the future and he can keep sending me some tips from the US.
- 15:10Excellent.
- 15:11He talked about, you know, Richie Stanaway and the private...
- 15:16love or want of him perhaps taking over the 97.
- 15:20Now we know that's not happening, right?
- 15:21Richie's already up and running with Groves.
- 15:23From the time that you spent with Stanaway, how much of a force are you expecting him to be in those Grove Mustangs next year?
- 15:29Yeah, I mean, what you saw at Bathurst and Sandown just shows that he's going to be right up there and right in the mix.
- 15:36I've really enjoyed hanging out with Richie this year.
- 15:38He's been awesome.
- 15:39And just to see how motivated he is and how hard he's working to get back in is really good to see.
- 15:45So...
- 15:47Yeah, become good mates with him this year, but I'm looking forward to racing him next year.
- 15:50I never got the chance to race against Richie, so I got no doubt he's going to be right in the mix.
- 15:56He's a sharp young lad that's, you know...
- 15:59He knows what's going on.
- 16:00You know, he's been around the world.
- 16:02He's done a lot of things.
- 16:03So I'm looking forward to racing him.
- 16:06And I got no doubt that they're going to be in the mix.
- 16:08If you don't mind, we'll get you to hang on there for us for just a few moments.
- 16:10A quick break now on the Motorsport Brief.
- 16:13More from Red Bull Amphole Racing's Brock Feeney right after this.
- 16:19You're listening to the Rusty's Garage podcast, our special motorsport brief or shortcast edition.
- 16:25Delighted to be joined today by Brock Feeney.
- 16:28It's his first time on the podcast and he's kindly agreed to answer some of your questions too.
- 16:34All right, a couple of questions from listeners here if you don't mind.
- 16:38Yeah.
- 16:39John Schumann on Facebook says, can we expect another Brock win in Adelaide?
- 16:45I'd like to hope so, John.
- 16:49I mean, I try and go to every race to win it.
- 16:52But, yeah, as I said before, there's a lot of things going on in us.
- 16:56I hate a lot of balls to juggle.
- 16:59But, yeah, hopefully come Sunday afternoon we can stand on top of that podium again.
- 17:04John Woodcock says, does Brock think that he's ready to step up and replace SVG as number one next season?
- 17:11I'll add a little bit to that question, Brock, if you like.
- 17:13Maybe there won't be a number one per se with Will coming in.
- 17:17I don't know.
- 17:17But to Jamie's point, do you feel like you're kind of ready to take a step up in the level of leadership, if you like?
- 17:26Yeah, I mean...
- 17:28There's no numbers within the team sort of thing.
- 17:32For sure the last couple of years, Shane's been the, a lot of things you would've lent on him for just cause I don't have that experience.
- 17:39But I think with Will coming in where we've both been in the sport for a few years, I think he'll be in his fourth.
- 17:44I'll be in my third.
- 17:45So we'll lean off each other a lot.
- 17:48I think maybe for the first couple of months, I'll obviously be able to relate to the team a little bit more in what we did this year.
- 17:56So there's going to be some areas where maybe I can help the team with, but for Will, it's going to be awesome to have someone new with fresh ideas and coming from a different team with a different aspect.
- 18:08So I'm looking forward to learning off him as well, and I think the whole team is.
- 18:11But, yeah, as for numbers, I don't think – there's no numbers.
- 18:15Like, I can guarantee you that.
- 18:16But, yeah, to your point, I'm –
- 18:19Yeah, I'm going into my third year.
- 18:22I am, look, there's no 30-year-old really experienced driver in the team anymore.
- 18:28It's two young guys.
- 18:29So, yeah, I'm looking forward just to working with Will and trying to build this team.
- 18:34Well, we don't need to build this team, but we want to get back to the top.
- 18:38We want to be back on top where we've been, and let's hope we can still do that this year and we can continue it on next year.
- 18:45Good outlook.
- 18:46Here's a nice question that you'll like from Carl Matthews.
- 18:49He says, how special was it to stand on the podium with your father, Paul, at this year's Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne?
- 18:56Yeah, that was awesome.
- 18:58That's very high up for me.
- 18:59It was very weird, though, because I just won the race and I pulled up at the podium and Dad wasn't there.
- 19:05And I'm like, where is he?
- 19:08I saw him walking down and my mum was there and all my team were there.
- 19:12And I'm like, the crew, I'm like, where's my dad?
- 19:14And they're like, oh, he's up on the podium.
- 19:16And I'm like, oh, no way.
- 19:17No, yeah.
- 19:18So I've rolled up to the podium and their dad is.
- 19:20So that was very cool.
- 19:23I mean, that's an awesome memory for me.
- 19:27I got some photos printed out for him and Nan.
- 19:29So it's hanging in dad's office and over at Nan's house as well.
- 19:32Love it.
- 19:33Couple to finish here.
- 19:34I know supercars is your focus, right?
- 19:36You've done some GT races for the team and so on.
- 19:39Is there things down the track, other stuff that you'd like to have a crack at?
- 19:43What is on the Brock Feeney wish list?
- 19:45Yeah.
- 19:47Look, for me, my goal is supercars and I want to hold the trophy at the end of the year.
- 19:53That's my goal.
- 19:55Look, I love racing.
- 19:57That's why I've been doing the GT stuff.
- 19:59I'm just trying to get as much experience as I can.
- 20:03I want to go and do some more races overseas in the GT cars and that, but I suppose I'm open to driving a lot of things.
- 20:11I just want to race.
- 20:12I mean, I'm looking at next year going, man, what am I going to do in these breaks?
- 20:16So, yeah, look, I want to keep racing, doing more stuff.
- 20:22But as I said, look, everything that I do revolves around supercars at the moment and it's certainly going to be that way for a while.
- 20:28So, look, we'll see what happens in the future, but I just want to keep racing more cars, more cars and more tracks and keep doing it more often.
- 20:36You mentioned about keeping in touch with your good buddy Jack Doohan before there.
- 20:39I mean, he's gone on the single-seater path.
- 20:40Was that something you ever contemplated, or was it only ever supercars and kind of tin-top racing for you?
- 20:46No, I did want to do it initially, actually.
- 20:48So, yeah, in 2017, I won the Australian Kart Championship, and we went over to Europe for three months to compete in some of the world events over there, and we did real well.
- 20:58We were on the podium at a few of them, or two of them, and...
- 21:02I was set.
- 21:02I'm like, man, I want to come to Europe.
- 21:04I'm racing all these guys.
- 21:05I reckon I can, I can give it to them.
- 21:07And, um, yeah, we got back home.
- 21:10We did a little bit of testing in a formula four, but, um, yeah, I think we were, we were smart and we were realistic and, and realized, you know, just how tough it was to get supercars.
- 21:21So we put all our focus on that.
- 21:23Um, we went and saw Paul Morris and he, he told us to go to the 86s.
- 21:27We did that.
- 21:27And, um,
- 21:29A few years later, we're here.
- 21:31But generally, I'm stoked with the decision that we made to stick here and come to Supercars because I'm at home.
- 21:41I'm racing for the top team in Australia, and life's pretty good at the moment.
- 21:46I'm stoked for Jacko as well.
- 21:48It's awesome to see so many of those kids that I'm racing are in Formula 2 and that now, so it's pretty cool to have the connection with a few of those guys.
- 21:56Outstanding, mate.
- 21:57Thank you very much for your time.
- 21:59Last win for Commodore and Holden in Adelaide last year.
- 22:03It'd be nice to add first Adelaide win in a Camaro to those history pages.
- 22:08Go well for that final round.
- 22:09Give your lovely mum and dad our best for Christmas.
- 22:12All the best for 2024.
- 22:13And as I say, thank you very much for coming on for a chat today.
- 22:15Thanks very much for having me, Rusty.
- 22:18He is terrific, isn't he?
- 22:19I wish I could speak that well at age 21.
- 22:22Incidentally, Ryan Walkinshaw will be with us next week for the short cast before he jets into South Australia for the final round.
- 22:29So if you've got some questions, hit us up on social media.
- 22:33Some other news now before we wrap up this edition.
- 22:35Massive congrats to Josh Buchan, the Hyundai Pilot.
- 22:39won the TCR Australia title in the final race of the season at Bathurst.
- 22:43He was a very gracious champion too, who hasn't come into the sport in the same traditional way as most young racers.
- 22:52Outgoing champ Tony Dalberto in the new Honda Civic Type R stormed to the runner-up spot.
- 22:58It was a heartbreaking weekend for Bailey Sweeney, who had been top of the points...
- 23:03for much of the year and incredibly consistent, only to have a few issues at the final event, and he slipped to third.
- 23:10From all of us, keep boxing, Bailey.
- 23:13James Moffat has won a national title, and he was incredibly proud, a bit emotional too.
- 23:18He is the 2023 Trans Am champion, and it was...
- 23:23A bit of a testing year for the Gary Rogers motorsport driver with off-track hearings and appeals at times overshadowing things.
- 23:30To his credit, he, Alan Heafy and his GRM crew preferred to do their talking on track.
- 23:36He even overcame a transmission issue in the final race when we thought it might slip from their grasp.
- 23:44The name Moffat wins a title.
- 23:47And he did it at the mountain.
- 23:48That is very cool.
- 23:49They've spent a fortune to race in some very cool conditions at night, but all is in readiness for the much-hyped Vegas F1 race.
- 23:58They say there should be some good passing there too.
- 24:01If you don't already, make sure you give the 1980 F1 champion, Alan Jones, a follow on Instagram.
- 24:07He posted a brilliant podium pick recently from his win,
- 24:11in the Caesars Palace race there in the early 1980s.
- 24:14I bet that party was a good one afterwards.
- 24:17And best of luck to competitors in this weekend's Australian Rally Championship decider, with the Bates brothers, Lewis and Harry, respectively, fighting it out in their own backyard in Canberra.
- 24:28Just 23 points separate them, with 110 up for grabs, Lewis on top of the ladder, as I said, and trying to take consecutive title wins.
- 24:38Yeah.
- 24:39That is it for this edition of The Brief.
- 24:40I'm off to round one of the Kiwi Summer Series, the Super Sprint Motorsport New Zealand Championship in Taupo, the centre of the North Island, where they will race next April in supercars.
- 24:52Bye for now.
