- 1:22is excited about
- 1:24this phase of life. And also, we recorded
- 1:27this in between, I believe it was in
- 1:30between
- 1:31the S Chase pre limbs and the Steep
- 1:33Chase vinyl. So it was of the olympic
- 1:36trials this year. So it was really fun

- 2:41to the podcast. Welcome to the show steph.
- 2:43So good to be with you Lindsay. I'm
- 2:45such a big fan of you of the
- 2:47podcast of the empire and, of course, of
- 2:50running in check fields and all of the
- 2:51fun stuff we're gonna talk about. So Pleased
- 2:53to be here. Oh my gosh. You're so
- 2:55sweet.
- 2:56Tell me, like, how are you enjoying watching
- 2:58the trials right now?
- 3:00I'm
- 3:01It is...
- 3:03It's emotional. It is so emotional, and I
- 3:05am actually gonna be down there for the
- 3:08final weekend.
- 3:09I'm based in the Pacific Northwest, a friend
- 3:11and I, and our toddler boys are gonna
- 3:13go down,
- 3:14and be in hayward for the final weekend,
- 3:17and I am already, like, getting tears in
- 3:19my eyes thinking about those moments and watching
- 3:22those athletes
- 3:23achieve their dream or not achieve their dream,
- 3:26you know? Because that is part of the
- 3:28story of the Olympic trials too, so
- 3:31it's so exciting to watch. I love seeing
- 3:33the next generation of Olympia come.
- 3:35It is so exciting and you're so right.
- 3:37Like, to see the emotions on both sides
- 3:39there. I have to ask you then,
- 3:42based on what you just said and based
- 3:44on your Olympic trials experience like your fall
- 3:47in 20 16 and being fifth of the
- 3:49trials
- 3:50What did your heart do
- 3:52when a thing... Did you know what I
- 3:54was gonna ask? Oh yeah. I've got, which
- 3:57somebody always falls to the 800?
- 4:00Always. Always. I had a training partner back
- 4:02in 20 12 fall in the in the
- 4:04800 in the in the rounds. And, you
- 4:06know, she,
- 4:08I don't... I don't think she had the
- 4:09standard at the time. But, like, just to
- 4:12anyone who makes it to the trials and
- 4:13you're on the starting line and, like, you
- 4:15get that chance.
- 4:17I'm thinking back to,
- 4:20Leah O'connor and that's not our Married. She's
- 4:22not. She's married now, but, like, thinking of
- 4:24her. Fallon. Yeah. Having a fall on the
- 4:26barrier, like, all of those...
- 4:28Ugh, was heartbreaking. It's heartbreaking. There's heartbreak in
- 4:31every single Olympic trial. In every race. Think
- 4:34of people who had, like, their shoes come
- 4:35on tied in the 5 k or the
- 4:3710 k or anything like that, like, pills
- 4:40Yeah. So...
- 4:42You had a really beautiful post about that,
- 4:44though. Like, not about the fault, but just
- 4:46about your experience and,
- 4:49like...
- 4:50Not being an Olympia or being in Olympia
- 4:52that doesn't define the athlete that you are.
- 4:54Can you talk about that a little bit?
- 4:56I think that there's
- 4:58there's only
- 4:59a few people who get to be in
- 5:01Olympia. That's this the way it goes, but
- 5:04that doesn't mean that there... That everyone else
- 5:07doesn't have a valid or exciting or fulfilling
- 5:10career. You know, I think about the...
- 5:12The the folks of my generation, like the
- 5:15steph bruce's of the world, the Sarah Halls
- 5:17of the world
- 5:18Done
- 5:19amazing things.
- 5:21Certainly not trying to compare myself to their
- 5:22paul's accomplishments, but just to say that
- 5:25you can accomplish so much. You can set
- 5:27records. You can be a champion.
- 5:30And still not being Olympia and that that
- 5:32doesn't make your experience any less valid or
- 5:36to be celebrated,
- 5:37like,
- 5:38I think that when we meet
- 5:40folks out in the world who aren't part
- 5:42of the Track field
- 5:44ecosystem, and they say, oh, wow, you are
- 5:45a pro,
- 5:46So you went to the Olympics,
- 5:48and it's it's hard to kind of explain.
- 5:51No. But I ran this time, and I
- 5:53did this thing and
- 5:55you know, those are super exciting, and
- 5:59again, fulfilling. I'm gonna use that word To
- 6:02those are fulfilling, aspects of any career. And
- 6:04so we don't go up to, you know,
- 6:06an account and say, hey, were you 1
- 6:08of the top
- 6:090.1
- 6:10percent.
- 6:11Mountains and oh, you weren't, so why are
- 6:13you working? You know, Like...
- 6:15Well, I was just thinking that with, like,
- 6:17basketball players.
- 6:18Think about how many pro basketball players there
- 6:21are and how few of them actually
- 6:23play on the Olympic team, but, like, we're
- 6:25still like, oh, he's a pro basketball player.
- 6:27Like, that's a big deal.
- 6:29Absolutely. Or how many people are Nfl players
- 6:31and don't win a Super Bowl. It'll get
- 6:33a back, and that doesn't mean that they
- 6:34didn't have a really cool and awesome. Career
- 6:37full of wins,
- 6:39And failures. And that's just part of it.
- 6:41I think that
- 6:43you didn't ask this question yet, but if
- 6:45there was something that I would want everyone
- 6:47to know and, like, embrace about their life
- 6:50experience is that failure is part of it.
- 6:53Is not linear,
- 6:54it and to expect it to be so
- 6:57is unrealistic. And we see some of these
- 6:59amazing athletes
- 7:01go from 0 to hundred and overnight, overnight
- 7:04successes.
- 7:06But we don't see all the work that's
- 7:07gone in
- 7:08behind the scenes or we don't see maybe
- 7:11they did have a connection or an opportunity.
- 7:13It's different with us athletics because you do
- 7:15have to actually run the race and run
- 7:16the top. But, like, for jobs or whatever.
- 7:20Like,
- 7:21there's usually a lot of work that goes
- 7:23in that you don't see.
- 7:24Totally.
- 7:25Well, I'm glad you said that because even
- 7:27though I hadn't asked it yet, I was,
- 7:28like, thinking about, like, where do I throw
- 7:31in
- 7:32What would your message be
- 7:34to... Well, I was actually thinking like, you
- 7:37know, who who was, like sage? You know,
- 7:40in the 800, like,
- 7:42I was thinking, like, what would you say
- 7:43to her? Well, she still gotta go run
- 7:45the fifteenth. So hopefully, she has a great
- 7:47race, but, like,
- 7:49you know, I saw her posters interview, and
- 7:50she was pissed. She was just pissed.
- 7:54How do you pick yourself back? Up from
- 7:56that heartbreak. Like, give yourself time to grieve
- 7:59it, but then be like, it's okay. My
- 8:01career still valid, and I still have so
- 8:03much more I wanna go do.
- 8:05I think for me, specifically about 20 16
- 8:07and missing that team. And and I wanna,
- 8:10like, for people who didn't.
- 8:12Go ahead. Wrong back in those days, didn't
- 8:14pay. Mentioned, like, I was
- 8:16you know, near the front for a lot
- 8:18of that race. I was in
- 8:20position and going into the final lap. I
- 8:22was in second place and so then to
- 8:24have to 2 girls past me fall, and
- 8:27then have another girl past me. I mean,
- 8:28at the that point, it was over. But
- 8:31you know, it... It's
- 8:33what I would say to myself
- 8:36and reflecting back, Like, I didn't
- 8:39take time to
- 8:41grieve. I just kept moving forward. Like, moving
- 8:44forward using
- 8:46failure to propel you to the next thing.
- 8:48I knew I was really fit. I knew
- 8:50there was some other goals that I had
- 8:52this again. These are all... These times are
- 8:54gonna sound silly in the context of today
- 8:56and super shoes, but back then, only
- 8:593 women had broken 09:20.
- 9:02The S, and that was, like, that was
- 9:03still a... It was a really big barrier.
- 9:05And I... I knew I could break that
- 9:07time. And so
- 9:09and
- 9:10for me immediately after falling, you know, going
- 9:13through the mix zone crying with my coach.
- 9:15I was like, okay. Now I need to
- 9:17go get in an eps salt bat. And
- 9:18I need to fuel. I need to hydrate
- 9:20and I need to get ready because I'm
- 9:22gonna go to Europe, and I'm gonna race
- 9:23in some diamond leagues, and I'm gonna do
- 9:25these things because I'm gonna break 09:20. That's
- 9:28gonna be my big goal. And
- 9:30and I did that that summer. And
- 9:33I remember having some friends and peers around
- 9:35me saying, like, why aren't you crying? Why
- 9:37aren't you hungry? Like, get drink a ball
- 9:40of wine, just get...
- 9:42Lose it, and I'm, like, no. Because I
- 9:44still have things to that I'm gonna go
- 9:45do. And so I'm not saying that's the
- 9:48healthiest way to, you know, maybe I should
- 9:49have had a big glass of wine and
- 9:51but
- 9:52I think that using failure... It's only a
- 9:55failure if you don't learn from it.
- 9:58Yeah.
- 10:00It's so hard.
- 10:01It's so and also, I feel like
- 10:04there's a lot of embarrassment with failure
- 10:06because people,
- 10:08like, you put your dreams out there.
- 10:11And then people expect x y and z,
- 10:13and then it doesn't happen,
- 10:15and you're like,
- 10:16oh,
- 10:17did you feel that? At all.
- 10:19I'm gonna have a confession. During my pro
- 10:22career, especially when I was running really well,
- 10:25I would never promote that I was running
- 10:27a race like, okay. You know, just whatever
- 10:29any race going to a diamond league. I
- 10:32wouldn't I wouldn't start talking about it until
- 10:34maybe like, the day of, like, oh, I'm
- 10:36hopping in to,
- 10:38My link, whatever it is,
- 10:40because I didn't want to put it out
- 10:42there and have anyone, even if it was
- 10:44like my mom, You know, 1 person pay
- 10:46attention,
- 10:47And then, oh, what if I had a
- 10:48bad race, that would be really embarrassed because
- 10:51I was like, oh, look at me. I'm
- 10:52going to this race.
- 10:54And then I, you know, had a D
- 10:56or so... You know, something like that, I
- 10:58was embarrassed. And so that's very true.
- 11:01That's definitely a feeling that we all get
- 11:04of, like, that embarrassment in that shame.
- 11:07Yeah. It's interesting because I feel like in
- 11:09today's world everything's so out there. And, like,
- 11:12everyday athletes, You know, there's, like, tracking for
- 11:15races and everything like that. And
- 11:18it's like both. So you can use that,
- 11:22everybody knows I'm running this marathon
- 11:24and can track me as, like,
- 11:26motivation.
- 11:27You know, like, at mile 18 when you're
- 11:29like, all this sucks. But then you're like,
- 11:31but people are gonna see my split at
- 11:32the 20 mile mark, you know?
- 11:35Or it can internalize as, like, really big
- 11:37pressure and just like, come crashing down on
- 11:40you. And I... It probably just depends on
- 11:43what kind of person you are. Like, how
- 11:44you suspects things. Yeah. As, like a perfection
- 11:47kind of person, I was the second thing.
- 11:49Like, would be too much pressure on me.
- 11:52I I know that... Like, the mental side
- 11:54of it started really getting to me towards
- 11:56the end. When I was in the final
- 11:57years of my s, fast forward to 20
- 12:0017, Us, championships, there's a world team to
- 12:03make. I fall again in the water. So,
- 12:05you know,
- 12:07it really messed with my head. And so
- 12:10much of it was just the pressure I
- 12:11was putting on myself. I'm sure no 1
- 12:13else really
- 12:14was paying that close of attention to the
- 12:16women's people at that point, but and But,
- 12:19yeah. It's it's real. So
- 12:21I'm just finding ways to kind of
- 12:24work within the system to that's gonna work
- 12:26for you. Like, that's... My advice there. And
- 12:29going back to your earlier question about, like,
- 12:31what would I say to someone like sage,
- 12:33Like, it's okay to feel what you're feeling
- 12:35is what I would say. Feel angry. Feel
- 12:38awful, like,
- 12:40get your team around you, get in your
- 12:42protected bubble
- 12:43and get yourself
- 12:45you know, fill your cup back up, get
- 12:48away from...
- 12:49And it's it's different percentage. She's gonna go
- 12:51back and run again. Yeah. But, for some
- 12:54folks who are kind of devastated
- 12:56by their experience
- 12:58at the trial, specifically,
- 13:00it's okay to to take a step away.
- 13:02For a week for a month, take time
- 13:04off, do what you need to do if
- 13:06that's how you wanna process it,
- 13:09you're not a failure. And there's more. And
- 13:11even if maybe this was, like, your last
- 13:13go with the trials if you're maybe an
- 13:15older athlete or you're just gonna do something
- 13:17different with your life,
- 13:20this will always be part of your story,
- 13:22Make it
- 13:23make it
- 13:24the the cliff hanger ending to the next
- 13:27chapter of of your life.
- 13:30Yeah.
- 13:30Well, I know I'm thinking about Sage 2
- 13:32when you you... You know, when you answer
- 13:34that question I'm like, She is still really
- 13:36young. So, like, this won't be her last
- 13:37olympic trials.
- 13:39But, also, I was also thinking, go do
- 13:42that Brenda Martinez thing, because do you remember
- 13:44when Brenda fell in the 800 and then
- 13:46made the team in the 15. Was that
- 13:47was that 20 16? It was. Yeah. Mh.
- 13:50Yeah.
- 13:51It's like that is a possibility. Like that
- 13:54can happen for you. I know that 1500
- 13:56field is just
- 13:58crazy stack, but it's always crazy stack. Always.
- 14:00I was just gonna say that when brenda
- 14:02made it. Was crazy stack too. So... Yeah.
- 14:04And and someone,
- 14:06everyone who makes to the trials has earned
- 14:08their way there. So
- 14:10everyone has a shot. It and that's the
- 14:11beauty and heartbreak of the way that the
- 14:13Us does it. You mentioned super shoes. And
- 14:16I'm like, oh, you are the perfect person
- 14:17who talked to about this because you really
- 14:19are.
- 14:20On that like, line there. Like, you know,
- 14:22I've talked to athletes who are, like like
- 14:25Des and Sarah who are, like, still racing
- 14:28and raced through it before. But like you've...
- 14:30And then you've got people that are really
- 14:32old school that weren't even any anywhere close
- 14:34to when super shoes came out But you're,
- 14:36like, right there. You were, like, right there
- 14:39before.
- 14:40And so I'm just curious, like,
- 14:43your thoughts on all that because we always
- 14:45think that, like, with Asterisk,
- 14:47aside from, you know, like Dean Cast,
- 14:50I always say, like Dean cast marathon,
- 14:52American record before it was broken, like, there
- 14:55were always in my mind be that like,
- 14:58this was pre super shoes because it held
- 15:00for over 20 years, you know. But, like,
- 15:02anyway, I'm just curious your thoughts on this
- 15:04as someone who didn't get to enter that
- 15:07era.
- 15:08It's tough.
- 15:09I see the times now, especially for, again,
- 15:12women's s and knowing that they have... Totally
- 15:14different spikes than I had,
- 15:17There's a little bit of, like,
- 15:18I don't wanna... I don't like to use
- 15:20the word, like, Envy or jealousy, but I'm
- 15:22like, oh man, I wish I could try
- 15:24that. Like, I'm so impressed to see, you
- 15:27know, girls at the Nc level, just blowing
- 15:30by the times that back my day, like,
- 15:32if you break 10, you were, like, a
- 15:35superstar. And now it's, like, did you break
- 15:3809:30?
- 15:39Yeah. Or you're not making a final at
- 15:41nc double or whatever?
- 15:43Yeah. That's
- 15:44it's just kind of that, like, every era
- 15:46has their own thing in their new,
- 15:49whatever training device or method.
- 15:52Or track surface or whatever. And so this
- 15:54is what's happening.
- 15:57I did try vapor flies for my first
- 16:00marathon, my first road marathon and,
- 16:03loved them. So... Really? Yeah. I I think
- 16:06Super shoes,
- 16:08we have to keep evolving with the time.
- 16:11And so
- 16:12I don't want there to be, like, an
- 16:14Asterisk next to, like, oh,
- 16:16these times like, everything again, keeping with the
- 16:20theme of, like, you're valid and worthy, like,
- 16:22everything is
- 16:24is part of it, and that's just the
- 16:26way the sport goes. Right?
- 16:27Yeah. For sure.
- 16:29Wait talk to us about your road marathon.
- 16:310II
- 16:33hopped into Ci am. Popped in. I did...
- 16:36You will understand this. I had a baby.
- 16:39And I I have been curious about the
- 16:42marathon. U.
- 16:44So I set Ci as my goal. My
- 16:46kiddo was born
- 16:47August 20 20 okay. So 20... So it
- 16:51was a while... But it's like a year
- 16:53Wait. How old was your child? He was
- 16:55what?
- 16:5615 months Okay. 14 months. Okay. I'm but
- 17:00I'm gonna be honest. It was
- 17:03it was a challenging experience. Yeah. Part I'm
- 17:06running is a very challenging thing.
- 17:09And
- 17:10for a couple reasons, there's the physical side,
- 17:12of course, there's the
- 17:14support side. Like, do you have a babysitter
- 17:16for your kid? Are you getting out to
- 17:18train?
- 17:18Are you... Breastfeeding? Are you is he in
- 17:21daycare care? You know, what what are... What
- 17:22does your life look like? Yeah. How time
- 17:25commitment, you know for a marathon. You need
- 17:27time to go out and get those miles
- 17:29in, But then also what surprise me was,
- 17:32like, the emotional mental side. Like,
- 17:35I struggled to be away from my kiddo
- 17:38in those
- 17:39months. Even though I was fine to run,
- 17:41my body was was coming back,
- 17:43feeling like myself again.
- 17:45I missed him. I felt anxious away from
- 17:48him, things things like that. And so III
- 17:51definitely struggled with getting back into some consistent
- 17:54training
- 17:55when he was still kind of in that
- 17:56baby
- 17:57phase. So didn't have that...
- 18:00I
- 18:01learned a lot through that marathon
- 18:04experience. I
- 18:05did not... I, like, changed my goals for
- 18:08it.
- 18:10As as I was going along and you
- 18:12mentioned Mile
- 18:1318 when you're kinda of
- 18:15for me, I was like, mile 17. I
- 18:17had. I stopped for, like, half a second.
- 18:19And in my head, I was like, well,
- 18:22like, I don't have a phone with me.
- 18:24How is my husband gonna of find me.
- 18:25How am I gonna get back to the
- 18:26finish line? I gotta keep going And Yes.
- 18:30Yeah. It was fun to have a first
- 18:31marathon experience. I've learned so much, especially about
- 18:34the training that I really do need to
- 18:38successful there to, like, actually give it a
- 18:40good attempt. And so
- 18:42I'm looking forward to 1 day doing another
- 18:441. You do wanna do another 1. I
- 18:46do. Because we're... Yeah. Distance Runners, you know,
- 18:48Lindsay, We wanna... We have a little bit
- 18:50of craziness,
- 18:52a in us where
- 18:53you do something challenging and then you wanna
- 18:55go and conquer it. So... Yeah. For sure.
- 18:59What were your goals And what... Do you
- 19:01care if ask what you mean? I would
- 19:03say that
- 19:05before when I was still pregnant, I thought,
- 19:07okay. I'm gonna...
- 19:08Run run a marathon. I'm gonna qualify for
- 19:10the Marathon trials. And Okay. Just wanna go
- 19:13to the marathon trials.
- 19:15And
- 19:17just between all those things I was talking
- 19:19about all the challenges.
- 19:20I just knew I wasn't in a fitness
- 19:22place for that.
- 19:24So I was
- 19:25shifted gears and was like, okay. Can I
- 19:27run in the 2 fifties? Can I break
- 19:3002:50? Can I start, like, can I get
- 19:32myself to a place where
- 19:34I can maybe get into, like, a semi
- 19:37elite field and another marathon? Yeah. And work
- 19:39my way
- 19:42to getting closer to
- 19:44would love the... That is a goal is
- 19:45to try and qualify for this. Okay. Marathon
- 19:48trials. No. I'm to try again. Yeah.
- 19:52So we'll see. Yeah. That's a that's a
- 19:54bucket list
- 19:55item for me.
- 19:57What is that like though to line up
- 20:00when you've been like? You know what I
- 20:02mean? You you've ran in the world championships
- 20:04in 20 15. You've obviously ran in the
- 20:07Olympic trials and you've run with the best
- 20:08of the best, like, Were you like, hey,
- 20:10I'm just here. Like, did you, like, were
- 20:11you just like, low key, like, put yourself
- 20:13in there?
- 20:14I was low key, and I was...
- 20:17We talked a little bit about, like,
- 20:20the pressure you put on yourself. This is
- 20:22definitely 1 that I did not talk about
- 20:24very much that I was
- 20:26and
- 20:28I was...
- 20:29I had moments where I felt kind of
- 20:31embarrassed. Like, I did get an bib, Yeah.
- 20:33I am great, and it was a great
- 20:35experience, but I also had never been in
- 20:37a made road race before. I didn't... I
- 20:39haven't done many road races. I've been so
- 20:41much on the track that... Yeah. I have
- 20:43no idea how many people would be around
- 20:45me and, like, just there were some in
- 20:48Crm such a big 1 for that final
- 20:50qualifier.
- 20:51Yes. That there were so many people,
- 20:54and,
- 20:55yeah. I... There was moments where I felt
- 20:57kind of embarrassed.
- 20:59I will tell you what helped me there.
- 21:01I channel my inner People Sq calling qui.
- 21:05Yeah. Bella S Chaser,
- 21:08who's gone through a lot over the last
- 21:09a few years
- 21:11and done some different things with training and
- 21:13racing. And I thought, what would Colleen do
- 21:16If she was in a race where she
- 21:17knew she wasn't quite ready
- 21:19but she's there. And I'm like, she would
- 21:21have so much fun. She'd be bathing. She'd
- 21:24be like, just living up and still trained
- 21:26still trying. Right? Not like, jogging. But but
- 21:30but, like,
- 21:31picking up space. It's okay to take up
- 21:33space. Even if you aren't...
- 21:35If you're a different version of yourself. And
- 21:38to bring it back to motherhood.
- 21:40I don't wanna think, like, oh, I'm
- 21:43a lesser version of myself because I'm a
- 21:45mom. Now. I'm a running mom. I don't
- 21:47to train the same way or race the
- 21:50same way. It's okay. I'm a new version
- 21:52of myself, not a lesser version. And this
- 21:55version is valid too.
- 21:57Alright, friends. This episode of the podcast is
- 21:59supported by Proven x, my go to for
- 22:01protein powder, muscle health, joint health, all the
- 22:06vitamins and supplements
- 22:07that you need are gonna be at pre
- 22:09x dot com. They have the highest quality
- 22:12ingredients, clinically effective supplements that promote health and
- 22:16longevity, and what I'm raving about is their
- 22:19muscle health. If you follow me on in
- 22:21Instagram, you might see that I've been lifting
- 22:23quite a bit. My goal is 3 days
- 22:25a week of lifting,
- 22:27still running around 5 days a week,
- 22:29And the muscle health plus combines clinically effective
- 22:33doses of cr
- 22:35mono
- 22:36If you're taking cr,
- 22:38you want that mono
- 22:40is the kind that you want.
- 22:42And other essential amino acids,
- 22:45it combines all these amazing ingredients for comprehensive
- 22:48muscle health.
- 22:50And
- 22:51as you age,
- 22:52You know, you hit 30, you hit 40,
- 22:54you hit 50, your muscles break down a
- 22:56certain percentage every decade, and it's so important
- 22:59to fight against that, So you can stay
- 23:02strong as you age.
- 23:04This is something I'm taking really importantly,
- 23:06importantly is that a word. I'm taking it
- 23:09really seriously.
- 23:11You know,
- 23:12I just hit 40, and this is a
- 23:13big deal to me.
- 23:15So I am focused on the strength training
- 23:19and also
- 23:20taking the muscle health and doing anything complimentary
- 23:22that will help me stay strong and help
- 23:25with that muscle growth, and protect against the
- 23:28muscle breakdown. So good news if you have
- 23:31already used my code another with P x
- 23:34You can use the code lindsay strength, LNDSEY
- 23:38strength, to get
- 23:4015 percent off your order as long as
- 23:42you have muscle health in the cart,
- 23:44You could put anything else in there and
- 23:46you can still get that discount using the
- 23:47code Lindsay strength. You can also use the
- 23:50code another if you've
- 23:52never purchased from Pre x using my code
- 23:54before. That'll still work for 15 percent off
- 23:57as well.
- 23:58I highly recommend their products. I take their
- 24:00multi vitamin. My kids take their vitamins.
- 24:02I really trust the work they're doing in
- 24:05the ingredients that they put in the product.
- 24:07So go to P x doc. Calm and
- 24:09check it out. Code lindsay strength or another.
- 24:12Alright friends back to the show.
- 24:16I love that. I love that you brought
- 24:17up calling too because you're so right.
- 24:20Like, jumping into triathlon,
- 24:22just like, doing all these different things, and
- 24:25then just, like, using her platform in other
- 24:28ways that aren't necessarily, like, on the track,
- 24:30steep chasing.
- 24:32I love that so much. I kinda feel
- 24:34when you brought up the mom thing.
- 24:37I kinda feel similar in a different way.
- 24:40And I don't know if it's age, but,
- 24:41like,
- 24:42I really
- 24:44in my non professional very
- 24:47recreational running ways. Like, I really got after
- 24:49it so hard after I became a new
- 24:51mom. Like, I
- 24:53ran crazy miles and,
- 24:56like, peered all my marathons and stuff, like,
- 24:59in those really early
- 25:01motherhood days,
- 25:03And now I feel like, now is the
- 25:05time where you should have more
- 25:07energy and, like more drive because your kids
- 25:09are bigger, but, like, I actually I don't
- 25:11feel like that? And I thought I would.
- 25:14And so I'm trying... I've... For years have
- 25:16been trying to figure out what does that
- 25:18mean for me? And, like, what does it
- 25:20look like to still work really hard, but,
- 25:21like,
- 25:22maybe the goals are different.
- 25:24You know, it's it's interesting. Like, life changes
- 25:27and you just... You don't know what's gonna
- 25:29happen or how you're in a feel. Absolutely.
- 25:31That's like the tagline for parenthood is, like,
- 25:33you no 1 yet what's gonna go until
- 25:35you're already in it, and
- 25:37I think that
- 25:39in so much of my postpartum, new mom
- 25:42experience has been just, like,
- 25:44to to still feel worthy in wherever I
- 25:48am right now. I'm feeling, like, what you're
- 25:51feeling right now. I don't feel that same
- 25:53drive and
- 25:55urgency to go out and gobble up goals,
- 25:58the same way. Doesn't mean I don't have
- 26:00goals, But my energy is poured so much
- 26:02into my kiddo into my family into my
- 26:05my work now. I'm I work now. Not
- 26:08just run. So... Yeah. Like, real a real
- 26:10job outside of professional running? Yeah. Real real
- 26:13big girl job. And not, you know, I
- 26:15don't have any
- 26:17sponsorship support. I've have no none of that.
- 26:18I do have a coach who's awesome and
- 26:20cheers me on, but like,
- 26:22I'm in a totally different. I'm a normal
- 26:25non elite runner now. So
- 26:29I don't feel that same
- 26:31push,
- 26:32but I have faith that it's gonna come
- 26:35back. And that's okay. That there's, like, it's
- 26:37okay to have ebb and flows in your
- 26:39motivation,
- 26:40and in the way you approach it. Like,
- 26:41I'm trying to still train, of course, and
- 26:43I still have races I'm jumping into and
- 26:45doing different things. I'm trying some trails. I
- 26:48would like to try some ultra
- 26:50but that dream of, like, getting back getting
- 26:53a marathon... Another couple goes with the marathon.
- 26:55Doing some half marathons. Like,
- 26:57running fast again is something I do wanna
- 27:00do,
- 27:02and I'm just gonna have faith that that
- 27:05urgency and that, like, real fire is gonna
- 27:07come back.
- 27:08I'll say 1 more thing about my story
- 27:10and then go back to you Because Like,
- 27:12I always feel like, don't talk too much
- 27:13about cell in Yan.
- 27:15But when we're talking about motherhood, I'm just
- 27:17like,
- 27:18I think that when my kids were really,
- 27:19like your kids ate your son's age.
- 27:22Stuff stuff has a 2 year old.
- 27:26I almost think that I used the running
- 27:29hard and all that to, like,
- 27:31cope with how hard it was when they
- 27:33were so little,
- 27:35and maybe I don't need that as much
- 27:37now in those ways, like,
- 27:39because parenting is, like so much less physically
- 27:41demanding than it used to be. And I'm
- 27:43like, well, that was my... That was 1
- 27:45of my coping mechanisms
- 27:46you know.
- 27:48But anyway, I was gonna ask you, yeah,
- 27:51when you bring up the trails
- 27:52and stuff,
- 27:54it's like, wow. Someone like you who comes
- 27:56from such a speed background.
- 27:58Like, if you have that endurance piece to,
- 28:02Like, you could just, like, tear it up
- 28:04on the trails?
- 28:05Because you've got the speed too, But I'm
- 28:07like what do you do? Do you go
- 28:08the way of Grace and Murphy and do,
- 28:09like, the shorter distance trail stuff? Okay. Here's
- 28:121 secret about trails that people forget. There's,
- 28:14like, hills and yeah.
- 28:17Terrain. And so I am not a graceful
- 28:19runner, and so...
- 28:21So I need work on those real technical
- 28:24rocky kind of
- 28:26rains. That's not the the trails that have
- 28:28ever been around. Like,
- 28:30and
- 28:32so much of my track time, you avoid
- 28:35trails. Because if you twisted an ankle or
- 28:37you've tumble right, totally. You could derail a
- 28:40race or even, like part of a season.
- 28:41So it was never. We didn't risk that.
- 28:44Now it's like, throw yourself down a hill
- 28:46and see what happens.
- 28:48I'm very cautious on downhill hills. Actually, before
- 28:52getting pregnant. I did the, like, Us, mountain
- 28:55running championships at Mount hood. And,
- 28:59I hadn't really done a lot of hill
- 29:00work, but
- 29:02I. Let's just get let's do this. Like,
- 29:03I fit. I'm fast.
- 29:05I did pretty well on the way up.
- 29:07I was like, in the top 10 on
- 29:08the way up the mountain. U. Thought down.
- 29:11I got past by, like, 20 people.
- 29:14No graduated. I think I finished, like, t
- 29:16because I could not send it on the
- 29:18hills.
- 29:19Mountain and run can. They're are amazing.
- 29:23I just am too worried about falling to
- 29:25my death.
- 29:27And it's like, who wants to be injured.
- 29:31They're amazing. Like, these... The the, like, true
- 29:34mountain running athletes,
- 29:36men and women are just so badass. I'm
- 29:38like, in all of them. And so it's
- 29:40really cool to find and learn about different
- 29:43running communities. You know, the ultra running world
- 29:46is different than the short. Trails.
- 29:48An obstacle course racing, which I was jumping
- 29:51into my husband's done, like, I,
- 29:54it's super cool to see all these different
- 29:57angles of running outside of just Pure track
- 29:59field. Mh. I wanna talk about the obstacle
- 30:02school racing. So that's where you met your
- 30:03husband.
- 30:04Yes.
- 30:05Okay.
- 30:06When did you even get the idea to
- 30:07jump into it and tell us a little
- 30:09bit about how much you've done it? Yeah.
- 30:11I I really haven't done it a lot
- 30:12recently I kinda had, like, 1 little season
- 30:14of jumping in and learning,
- 30:17because surprise surprise as a track athlete. I
- 30:20did not have those, like, Gym gymnastics skills
- 30:22to be, like, hanging from things and swinging
- 30:26and even, like, go to your playground and
- 30:28jump on a monkey bars, like That's hard.
- 30:31I couldn't start hard. It's... That's not my
- 30:33skill. I I can lift things. I can,
- 30:35like, carry big buckets or rocks or whatever,
- 30:37but the, like, swinging offs. Were really challenging
- 30:40for me. I failed them all.
- 30:43But I was excited to be in a
- 30:45beginner again. And to learn something new. And
- 30:48so but back actually in 20 15, 20
- 30:5116, when I was, like, at the height
- 30:53of my running, my track running,
- 30:55I had met this athlete Amelia Boone, she
- 30:58was... Yeah. Yeah. A lawyer turned officer hospital
- 31:02course racer was, like, 1 of the first
- 31:04women to, like, dominate in the sport
- 31:06because it's... Still pretty new, and it's not
- 31:08in the Olympics or anything like that yet.
- 31:11And I was just so inspired by her.
- 31:13And so I said, when you're done with
- 31:16track running and it's decade, like, let's do
- 31:18some Ocr and just like c because it
- 31:20seems like fun. I'm a S chaser. I
- 31:22wanna do wild things. And just, like, jump
- 31:25over things and jump in water, like, that's
- 31:27in my Dna. So
- 31:30once I did step back from the track
- 31:32and This was early 20 21
- 31:34because,
- 31:35and the reason I sit back from the
- 31:36track was really just injuries and just getting
- 31:39older and just not...
- 31:41It just wasn't... It was just time to
- 31:43be done.
- 31:44But I immediately jumped into this Ocr and
- 31:48t. Stuff,
- 31:49and had a really fun year. And then
- 31:51I got pregnant. And so, you know, just
- 31:53the way the cycle of life is gone.
- 31:55And so I,
- 31:56have done a couple of little trail races
- 31:59recently,
- 32:00and they've gone really well with Good. With
- 32:02limited training, and so,
- 32:04have I would say my next big goal
- 32:07the next like thing I would love to
- 32:08do is to try an ultra, try a
- 32:1050 k. Okay.
- 32:12And and see if I
- 32:14not so much to, like, I'm gonna go
- 32:16and win because
- 32:17training is very limited right now just with,
- 32:19like, the time and and the toddler hood
- 32:22era, but I wanna try 50 k
- 32:26how I do learn a lot and then
- 32:29figure out okay. Is this something I wanna
- 32:30do more of and train.
- 32:32More specifically for.
- 32:34Yeah. And then how do you like, set
- 32:36goals around that stuff now? Like, what matters
- 32:39most to you now?
- 32:41In general, what matters most to me,
- 32:45it's a little bit like what you were
- 32:46mentioning as, like a mother runner of, like,
- 32:49is running, like, the filling my cup is
- 32:51this giving me, like, that release that I
- 32:54need as, like, a busy working mom.
- 32:58That's that's something. Like, that's a check... Like,
- 33:01a box I wanna check every week of,
- 33:03like, how did running feel for... Me. It
- 33:05feel like a pressure stressful thing that I
- 33:07had to put on my to do list?
- 33:09Or did it feel like something that, like,
- 33:11was awesome and I, like, had fun. And
- 33:12I met with other family. Mom in the
- 33:14area and Ran, like, had a good run
- 33:16with my husband, like those things.
- 33:19But then there's in the trail world in
- 33:21the ultra world. There are races that you
- 33:23wanna, like, get to. You know, did you...
- 33:27You know, I I have like a wish
- 33:29list of races all across the country all
- 33:31across the world that I'm like, I 1
- 33:32day Wanna go to Arizona and do this
- 33:34crazy
- 33:35desert race. Or, I wanna go to, you
- 33:38know, out here in the Pacific Northwest and
- 33:40do this... Crazy
- 33:41trail marathon. You know, whatever it is,
- 33:44it's like, wanting to hit those. Just like
- 33:46folks who do road marathons, 1
- 33:49wanna do, like, they have their list of
- 33:51Chicago, Berlin, New York. It's kind of how
- 33:53it is on the trails.
- 33:55I love the process of that. Like, the
- 33:57process of being, like, well, first and foremost
- 34:01or is this,
- 34:02like satisfying?
- 34:04Is this not overwhelming? Is am I enjoying
- 34:06this?
- 34:07Then it's those other buckets.
- 34:09I remember 1 of my first
- 34:12obstacle course races, It was a Spartan race.
- 34:14It was in Pennsylvania.
- 34:16And,
- 34:17like, you know, they have men and women
- 34:19running together. You're just kind of all out
- 34:20there.
- 34:21And I,
- 34:23then I won for my age group for
- 34:24women, but,
- 34:271 really steep climb,
- 34:29There was like, a group of dudes around
- 34:31me and I just said, why are we
- 34:32doing this? And they were like, because we
- 34:35paid a lot to be here. And like,
- 34:37I was like, oh, that's a good point.
- 34:39And so I think about that a little
- 34:41bit in this... Like, no one's paying me
- 34:43to do this. No 1 is expecting me
- 34:45to post on social with their stuff.
- 34:48While I'm out on the trails, like, I
- 34:50am doing this, I'm taking my time away
- 34:52from my family. I'm taking, like, I'm spending
- 34:55my money whatever it is, who to do
- 34:58this race or do this training. So I
- 35:00wanna
- 35:02feel that, like,
- 35:03fulfillment from it in a different way way
- 35:05then that, like, you have to have these
- 35:08time goals or hit these marks or whatever
- 35:10that you might feel if you had a
- 35:12sponsor day if you had that that, like,
- 35:14level of support. Yeah. I mean, I feel
- 35:16like in almost every marathon I've ever run.
- 35:19I'm like, or you know, you get to
- 35:20that mile 18? You said 17 your race
- 35:22or 20 or 22? You're like, why the
- 35:24heck am I doing this to myself? Like,
- 35:26what, but then you remind yourself, like, I'm
- 35:28doing this because I feel more alive when
- 35:31I do this. I'm doing this because I
- 35:33know how...
- 35:34Amazing. I'm gonna feel when it's over. Like,
- 35:37there's no other
- 35:38external
- 35:40validation or anything that I should be doing
- 35:41it for other than like,
- 35:43I feel more alive when I work really
- 35:45hard.
- 35:47Absolutely. Like, that's that's why we're in this
- 35:49whole life. Right? To get real deep about
- 35:51it, but, you know, it's not just to
- 35:53be, like, a 9 to 5 or or
- 35:55to just be I'm just mom or... Just,
- 35:57like a wife, Like,
- 35:59I have this
- 36:01intensity in me, and I'm gonna let it
- 36:03out. And so whatever that is, it does
- 36:04not to be running, It could be. I'm
- 36:06pickle ball or whatnot. But just finding that
- 36:09thing for you.
- 36:11I think that's just that's the key to...
- 36:13Yeah. Yes.
- 36:15New balance. You sponsored by new balance forever.
- 36:18And what does that feel like
- 36:21obviously, you haven't been in that world for
- 36:22a little while now, but
- 36:24what does that feel like
- 36:26being totally outside of it at this point
- 36:28and being on the outside looking in? Like
- 36:31we talked about the Olympic trials earlier, like
- 36:33seeing
- 36:33these athletes who have these brand obligations and
- 36:36all this stuff. What does that look like
- 36:38to you now? So 1 thing that's really
- 36:40interesting. I work in college athletics and the
- 36:44big change
- 36:45over the past few years is the name
- 36:47image likeness so that Call athletes.
- 36:50Can get
- 36:51deals. They can be entrepreneurs.
- 36:53They can get paid to play a concert,
- 36:55whatever it is. They can get paid
- 36:57all where they couldn't before because they were
- 36:59an athlete, and they were an amateur. And
- 37:02so I am really fired up skiing all
- 37:05the college runners getting these I deals with
- 37:08on or new balance or anyone,
- 37:11and being able to make money. While there's
- 37:14still call Athlete lead. I just think that's
- 37:16such a cool opportunity. And so, like, big
- 37:18applause to folks like new balance. Mh. And
- 37:21other brands who are taking advantage of this.
- 37:23Like, these athletes have big following. They have
- 37:26a voice. They have an opinion,
- 37:29and they're running really amazing. They're making Olympic
- 37:31teams or they're getting to the trials,
- 37:33which is a huge accomplishment,
- 37:35but especially when you're... In college and you're
- 37:38balancing all the things. So to see them
- 37:41get the chance to experience that sponsorship life
- 37:44before having to dive all the way in
- 37:46be a full pro.
- 37:47I think is a really cool opportunity. And
- 37:50so,
- 37:50yeah, I'm fired up. I will say you're
- 37:52talking about the trials. Like new balance always
- 37:54had the best house they would bring a
- 37:56chef in.
- 37:57I still follow the chef, chef Jb, and
- 38:00he's been posting, you know, Instagram stories about
- 38:02what he's cooking for everyone?
- 38:04I missed that a lot.
- 38:06I know I'm like, well you're you're going
- 38:08to the final weekend. Can you just, like
- 38:09go be like, hey, Jb. Can I get
- 38:12a little? Omelette or something? Yeah. Where's the
- 38:14pancakes? No. He's that probably probably. Really.
- 38:19But, yeah. I think, you know, with
- 38:22I
- 38:23know that some brands love to use their
- 38:25athletes like, in their
- 38:27marketing and stuff, and I think new balance
- 38:29is, like, doing a great job of that,
- 38:31especially with, you know, the Sydney Mc, the,
- 38:34you know, Mh new faces.
- 38:36They started doing that with us, They... When
- 38:38they had a lot of women, you know,
- 38:39Emma, Jenny, Brenda,
- 38:42Abby, like, all of those... Gosh, like, I
- 38:45think of my time as a sponsored athlete
- 38:47and, like, you we just had the best
- 38:49roster. You really did. Corey.
- 38:52Emily Sis. Mh.
- 38:54Did I mention Jenny Simpson like just
- 38:57thing. So
- 38:59yeah. So cool, and it was just such
- 39:01a privilege to be part of that for
- 39:03for 10 years. So... Yeah. Wow. 10 years.
- 39:07That's a lot
- 39:09That is a lot.
- 39:10You know when I talked to Jenny Simpson
- 39:13most recently
- 39:14and talked about... Her moving on from new
- 39:17balance.
- 39:18I I don't wanna quote her because I
- 39:20I won't say it exactly right. But she
- 39:23said something along the lines of, like, that
- 39:24was 1 of the greatest heartbreak breaks of
- 39:25her career is when
- 39:27her relationship as a sponsored athlete for them
- 39:30ended. And I I imagine it was. What
- 39:32was that like for you? I I don't
- 39:34remember when you were tired, like, you didn't
- 39:36make, like, a big announcement or anything? No.
- 39:39It just was, it was a combination of...
- 39:41And I was still going to have some
- 39:44light support from them, but I really had
- 39:46been dealing with injuries. I hadn't really raped.
- 39:50To my best potential for a little bit.
- 39:52And so it was just time to to
- 39:54step back and not feel that least pressure
- 39:57or obligation both ways. Right? Like, they didn't
- 40:00need to feel the obligation to keep giving
- 40:01me gear and, you know, and a salary
- 40:04or anything,
- 40:05and I didn't wanna feel that obligation to
- 40:07be, and they never had a contract like
- 40:09you hear with some athletes from other brands
- 40:11of, like, have to run. These 10 races.
- 40:14Like, it wasn't
- 40:15that intense for me. But
- 40:18you know, you just... When you're sponsored out
- 40:20that you want to go and represent your
- 40:22your brand and and your team. And so...
- 40:26And it was shifting too. There were so
- 40:28many groups now, you know, there's the team
- 40:30boss. There's just Mh. They're the the new
- 40:32balance Boston group, like, there were definitely starting
- 40:35to shift their resources in a different way.
- 40:38So it just was the right time for
- 40:40me to say, hey,
- 40:42like, I know I'm my contract up, but
- 40:44I'm on an extension, but, like, I think
- 40:46this is time to just
- 40:49that being said to to go back to
- 40:50what you... To Jenny comment, it was such...
- 40:54It is such a great
- 40:56brand. Like, their, like, corporate office is just
- 40:59they're great people, their true track fans,
- 41:03and
- 41:04especially in my era. It was just really
- 41:06had that family feel. Which I can't speak
- 41:09to any other brand, but
- 41:11it was really an awesome experience.
- 41:14Why did you decide to not, like, make
- 41:17somebody big enough? When you retired.
- 41:20It probably goes back to what we were
- 41:22mentioning in the beginning a little bit of
- 41:24that, like,
- 41:25I guess I'll use the word shame or
- 41:27just like, no. I I think I always...
- 41:31I don't... I don't quite know how to
- 41:32say this, but I think that I've...
- 41:35Always just felt, like, I'm not this big
- 41:38premier
- 41:39like, headline grabbing athlete. Like, I have a
- 41:41great little following. I've got people who, you
- 41:44know, support me,
- 41:46amazing coaches and peers, but I'm certainly not
- 41:48someone with hundreds of thousands of followers who
- 41:50are hanging on my every word. And so...
- 41:53And I also just knew that I... I
- 41:55was gonna shift my priorities into some different
- 41:58kinds of race thing into having a big
- 42:00girl job into having a family 1 day.
- 42:03And I just didn't wanna
- 42:05feel, like
- 42:06thing I don't know. I wanted to just
- 42:08have everything evolve gradually and not have this
- 42:11hard, like, and it's over.
- 42:14And so
- 42:15I knew I was gonna still do some
- 42:18racing. It was just gonna look different
- 42:21and not be as much, shouldn't not be
- 42:23as hardcore as Olympic trials, but
- 42:25I... Yeah. I just didn't feel like I
- 42:27needed to do a big, huge
- 42:29goodbye tour because
- 42:31I just didn't feel like I was that
- 42:32level of an athlete.
- 42:34That's that's interesting that you... I mean, I
- 42:37I get what you're saying and why you
- 42:38felt like that. I feel like... That really
- 42:41relates to
- 42:42any career.
- 42:45I mean, as you were talking,
- 42:46I was feeling that
- 42:48to my soul
- 42:50about this podcast.
- 42:52I was like, well, if I just up
- 42:53and quit 1 day, like,
- 42:56would I... Who what would I even say?
- 42:58Like, would anybody care? And, like, I don't
- 43:00even like that those feelings were coming into
- 43:01my mind, but they were as you were
- 43:03saying that? And I'm sure there's lots of
- 43:05people that feel that, like, deeply with whatever
- 43:08it is they're doing? Like,
- 43:10who do I matter to like, who's gonna
- 43:12care enough if... If I shift or do
- 43:14this or do that. And...
- 43:17But I wanna validate that your career was
- 43:19meaningful and important, and you did amazing things
- 43:23if Well, and let's take that... Go back
- 43:25to my,
- 43:26feeling at mile 17 Ci. Like, let's go
- 43:29back to that calling quickly People sq mindset
- 43:31of, like, you are the star of your
- 43:33own show. And that's you are worthy of
- 43:35that. And so, like, it doesn't matter if
- 43:37you're audience is, you know, a thousand listeners
- 43:41or, you know, a hundred thousand followers or
- 43:43whatever it is, and whatever lane you're in,
- 43:46audience like, you're allowed to go out as
- 43:49big or as low key as you want.
- 43:51I think I'm just more of a low
- 43:52key person,
- 43:53like
- 43:54not as flashy as sometimes it looks like
- 43:56on Instagram. You know, back in the day
- 43:59when you're in a big training group and
- 44:01you're in a diamond race and you can
- 44:02be flashy,
- 44:04but I think I'm much more just like,
- 44:06under the radar than than that as a
- 44:08person,
- 44:10I think that I'm gonna have to really
- 44:11lean into that calling quick... I mean, I'll
- 44:14never look like a super supermodel like calling
- 44:16quickly, but, like, I think I really need
- 44:17to, like, lean into that
- 44:19mindset,
- 44:20I I don't know that I've ever heard
- 44:22any anybody, like, give that
- 44:24anecdote or whatever, but I love it so
- 44:26much. And now I'm like, I gotta get
- 44:27colleen back on the show. You do. And
- 44:30she probably would have be like, I don't
- 44:31know if she might, like, laugh at me
- 44:32if if she, like, heard that, like, I
- 44:34think that I Her that way. But Yeah
- 44:36I love it. Compliment.
- 44:38You know, yeah. Were peers in the space.
- 44:40We were teammates in 20 15 worlds and,
- 44:43Anna you know, she... She's a great person,
- 44:45and I hope that all of her, like,
- 44:47endeavors go as well as they look on
- 44:50Instagram.
- 44:51But
- 44:52Yeah. It's just something it's a good it's
- 44:55good to have someone that you...
- 44:57I don't know. I think I I think
- 44:58about this.
- 45:00Maybe I don't wanna bring up be, like,
- 45:02oh, because I'm a woman, but, like, I
- 45:04want to be able to have a moment
- 45:06where I can like, look in the mirror
- 45:06and say, like, you're a badass ass. Like
- 45:08let's go do this. Walk into this Zoom
- 45:10meeting or go to the toddler playground with
- 45:14your kid and like, just own own your
- 45:16space. And so
- 45:18b you. So that's
- 45:20we all kinda need that little, like, superhero
- 45:22moment, and so
- 45:24totally, I was just like, I did this
- 45:26Instagram story. The other day, and, I was
- 45:28talking about, like, getting more eyes on track
- 45:30and field and Michael Johnson's thing that he's
- 45:32doing, and then I was like, saying, like,
- 45:34breathe
- 45:35like, how can we tell more stories like,
- 45:38for instance, like, your story being highlighted in
- 45:40bigger ways when you are competing things like
- 45:43that. And then after I put the story
- 45:45up, I was, like, who was I to
- 45:47voice my opinion? Like, who was I to
- 45:49talk about this? And I had these, like...
- 45:52Gross annoying doubts that, like, I didn't deserve
- 45:56to, like, have an opinion or, like, thoughts
- 45:58on that?
- 45:59I'm like, lindsay, what are? What are you
- 46:01doing? Like, why do you care if people
- 46:03do or do not think that you deserve
- 46:05to have a voice in this? Why do
- 46:07you think you don't? I just
- 46:09Why do we do that to ourselves?
- 46:11I don't know. I don't know, but I
- 46:12know I've always done that to myself. And
- 46:14so I'm here. I'm dev validating you, Lindsay.
- 46:17You have... A voice. You're you're using it.
- 46:19Your platform is amazing.
- 46:21III think we all
- 46:23we all do that. All do this. I'm
- 46:25in whatever context.
- 46:29Alright, friends. I wanna let you know if
- 46:31you are treating for a half marathon or
- 46:33a marathon, I have training plans on my
- 46:36website at lindsay high dot com. The half
- 46:39marathon plans are 14 weeks. There's a beginner
- 46:41beginner so a beginner as you can get.
- 46:44There's a beginner intermediate. There's an intermediate and
- 46:47there's advanced. So there's 4 options. And then
- 46:50we have marathon training plans that are 18
- 46:52weeks that give you a nice base spilled,
- 46:54and I have 3 options there, a beginner,
- 46:57intermediate and advanced. When you go to the
- 46:59website and click on each training plan, it'll
- 47:01tell you what the Mileage starts at.
- 47:03With the long run starts starts at with
- 47:05the
- 47:06entirety of the week total mileage is at
- 47:08and how it builds you. I'm super conservative
- 47:11with how I build miles. And I've had
- 47:13a lot of people who have had tons
- 47:15of success. Go to lindsay hi dot com
- 47:17to learn more and grab yourself an awesome
- 47:19training plan.
- 47:20Alright. Back to the show.
- 47:24I think we should talk a little bit
- 47:26about the 20 15.
- 47:28World's team that you are on because we
- 47:30should talk about
- 47:31the really big moments that you got to
- 47:34celebrate and that we'll always be
- 47:37on that line on your Wikipedia page or
- 47:39whatever.
- 47:40So talk about that moment and what that
- 47:43meant in your, the, like, holistic view of
- 47:46your career.
- 47:48Yeah.
- 47:48Like, thinking back to just making that team.
- 47:51Oh, my gosh. Like,
- 47:53Everyone who's doing the trials. And tonight, you
- 47:55know, the S Chase final to give context
- 47:58for when we're recording this, but I'm I'm
- 48:00super emotional because this is gonna be a
- 48:02fresh team of Olympia, like, totally. You know,
- 48:05we have our 3 former Olympia who are
- 48:07not gonna... Who are not competing.
- 48:10So sad and devastated for them, but gosh,
- 48:12like, I'm gonna be on pins and needles
- 48:15this whole race of, like, who's gonna make
- 48:17it. I am I'm already again, getting goosebumps
- 48:20again. But to take me back to 20
- 48:2215,
- 48:23you just know, like, my coach and I,
- 48:25my coach at the time Robert Gary,
- 48:28from Thurman,
- 48:29he,
- 48:30and I would talk about how success was
- 48:33the culmination of
- 48:35opportunity and preparation. When preparation opportunity, that's where
- 48:39success is. And so
- 48:40I
- 48:41was really fit. We'd worked really hard. He's
- 48:45a 2 time Olympia in the S. So
- 48:47I trust everything that he gave me. I
- 48:48just did he told me And I we
- 48:51were ready, and I had an aggressive race
- 48:54plan. I was an aggressive race back then.
- 48:58Getting on Emma and just, like, following her
- 49:00as long as I could until she had
- 49:01that other
- 49:02amazing year and chopped everybody. But,
- 49:05I did that.
- 49:07Across the line. I was second, and I
- 49:09made that team. I crawled across the line.
- 49:11I was so tired at that point, but
- 49:14and then to get, you know, fast forward
- 49:16get to Beijing,
- 49:18I had been on the 20 11 world
- 49:20team before 2, I was an alternate. That
- 49:23got called in at the last minute, So
- 49:24I had been
- 49:25on that world stage as a
- 49:28college senior.
- 49:29Wow. That And so
- 49:33I just felt
- 49:35prepared for the moment. I felt like I
- 49:36had done the preparation and the opportunity was
- 49:38there.
- 49:40We...
- 49:41Yeah. I,
- 49:43I guess I just have this, like, huge
- 49:44smile, my face remembering, and being in that
- 49:46final, and
- 49:48Yeah. Like,
- 49:49the race
- 49:51played differently than we thought,
- 49:53it was kind of like a slow fast.
- 49:55Faster and we thought it might start fast.
- 49:57And anyway, it just...
- 50:00But finishing in ninth, ninth in the world,
- 50:03just I Yeah. I can't... I couldn't have
- 50:06done anything more in that moment. I did
- 50:08a... I put it all out there, and,
- 50:10it was so cool.
- 50:12And that was the first time we had
- 50:14Not just all 3
- 50:16Us women make the final, at the world
- 50:18championship.
- 50:19We had all 3 Us men s make
- 50:21the final.
- 50:22And so that was really cool to have,
- 50:24like, a full team
- 50:26in the final of the S.
- 50:30Yeah. It was just... Really... I just think
- 50:32that I was part of this really, really
- 50:34cool era.
- 50:35You were. Of of Steep specifically, but track
- 50:38to
- 50:39where
- 50:40Nowadays,
- 50:42the Us
- 50:43distance
- 50:44athletes are so dominant, like, we're talking about,
- 50:46like, oh, is
- 50:48Cra gonna win a medal. Like,
- 50:51you know, I was there when when,
- 50:54Emily
- 50:55is Warner metal. And, you know, Molly, like,
- 50:58she out outlined molly. Like. Like, it just...
- 51:01That was a first for Oh, my gosh.
- 51:03That was the 20 15 world championship. When
- 51:05Emily metal.
- 51:07Yeah.
- 51:08And so just like
- 51:11and the our 800 meter ago. Like, we
- 51:12we just... Right now, the Us is, like,
- 51:15dominant across the board, and I got to
- 51:16be there for, like, seeing those pieces, like,
- 51:19start coming into place, and
- 51:22it just feels really cool. There's times where
- 51:25I wish that I was, like,
- 51:263 years younger. And then I would in
- 51:28super shoes or some, like, different level of
- 51:31sponsorship.
- 51:33And sometimes I wish I was older where
- 51:35like, it was all new and you could
- 51:37just run, like, 10 flat in the steep.
- 51:39You be like the 1. Yeah. 1,
- 51:41but I'm I'm I'm so just, like, grateful
- 51:44for the place that I was put in
- 51:47and the era I was put in,
- 51:49because
- 51:50I don't know. There was also just grit
- 51:52to it? I know. Athletes are gritty now.
- 51:54Don't get me wrong. But, like, we didn't
- 51:56have all the, like,
- 51:58should we just... It was just different
- 52:00maybe all the older athletes say that like,
- 52:03hey we had to go uphill both ways.
- 52:05But
- 52:06you know, every every next generation gets
- 52:09things done a little bit differently, and maybe
- 52:12a little bit better,
- 52:14comes with different pressures too. But
- 52:16I just... I'm biased, but I loved my
- 52:18era.
- 52:19I love that so much. You're so right
- 52:21there, like, every... Because I'm I'm a little
- 52:23bit older than you, but like, we... Same
- 52:25thing with, like, all these big marathons. I'm
- 52:28always like, it was so different early on
- 52:30in the early days. Like, everything's changed so
- 52:33much I'm like, Lindsay. Just fine. Go at
- 52:35the times, man...
- 52:37Yeah. I... I don't wanna be like that
- 52:39growing and the person
- 52:41oh shaking my fist. Like, you and your
- 52:43Super Pursues and your fancy agents and your
- 52:46deals, but, like,
- 52:48theory though to think back. To, like, what
- 52:51it was. I think it's... I think that's
- 52:53special because that moment in time matters. I
- 52:56can remember my, like, first trip to Europe,
- 52:58again, like, that...
- 53:00Like, fifth year senior of college, just, like,
- 53:02getting a ticket to... I think I was
- 53:04going to Switzerland and just, like,
- 53:07where do I go? I land. No 1
- 53:08told me where to go? How do I
- 53:10find the race people? I, like, wandered around
- 53:12for an hour. Like, it just... I my
- 53:14cell phone didn't work. You know, Like, it's
- 53:16just so different now. Everyone's so connected and
- 53:19dialed in, and you can see everything,
- 53:21like, via social media. That's
- 53:24that that is a privilege in a in
- 53:26a in a struggle. I'm sure, pressure and
- 53:28a privilege. So for sure. Everything on Str.
- 53:31Put all your training out there, like,
- 53:33everyone can judge that. I'm... That's not I
- 53:36hide my struggle like, especially now when I'm
- 53:39running, like, barely, but
- 53:41Oh, I wanna see your str. I don't
- 53:43hide it.
- 53:44Oh.
- 53:46Here's the caveat. I do so much. Stroller
- 53:49running.
- 53:50Yes. We're out of this phase, but so
- 53:53many of my miles are stroller miles. Oh,
- 53:55yeah. Like little that.
- 53:57But I would always just write it on
- 53:59the title. I would be, like, stroller run,
- 54:00or I'd be, like, better yet. Double stroller
- 54:03run. Because let me tell you that double
- 54:05stroller is...
- 54:07Way harder than the single. Let's get into
- 54:09that. What which what was the 1 you
- 54:11use? Was it the box? Oh, yeah. Yeah.
- 54:14Use the Bob. I actually still have it
- 54:15sitting out here. I can, like, see it
- 54:16out my window.
- 54:18We have to... I have, like, so much
- 54:20crap that I need to just, like, get
- 54:21rid of that's out there.
- 54:23But I mean let me v you for
- 54:25that. You right fill it out to me.
- 54:27Oh, you don't want it. Nobody wants this
- 54:29bob. I mean,
- 54:30we always say, like, I wish that we
- 54:32would have put an odometer on it. And
- 54:34because my husband also did a lot of
- 54:36stroller running with it. I mean, I've done
- 54:3820 mile runs with that thing. Yep. Just
- 54:40like,
- 54:42it's in... I mean, 5000 miles. I don't
- 54:44know. It's got a lot of freaking miles
- 54:46on it.
- 54:47The double Bob not so much. I just...
- 54:49I never...
- 54:51Really enjoyed a double stroller run. I will
- 54:53say that we saw the other day this
- 54:56couple, and she was pushing, like, the... They
- 54:59were running. He was pushing the double, and
- 55:01she was pushing like, a little or baby
- 55:04more in the bassinet style, which I'm like,
- 55:06yeah. You're I'm supposed to run with that.
- 55:07But... And I was, like, 3 kids. Parents
- 55:10running. I'm like, that's some goals out there.
- 55:12So yeah. We at 1 point got a
- 55:14triple.
- 55:16And... Because my oldest was 6.
- 55:19When my youngest was born. She had just
- 55:21turned 6, so he... I'm mean, like, my
- 55:246 year old now, My own... He's almost
- 55:256. I would never put him in a
- 55:27stroll first stroller run. But at the time,
- 55:31he was my oldest, and we couldn't leave
- 55:34anybody home obviously. So we would... Glen would
- 55:37pushed the triple, and I would push the
- 55:38single, and we we did that for about
- 55:41a year.
- 55:42But, yeah, I I would say that the
- 55:44double to the triple
- 55:45was
- 55:47similar.
- 55:48The single to the doubles felt like a
- 55:50bigger jump.
- 55:51Yeah. That's... I'm... I love a single stroller
- 55:54run, but nice that's the other thing. We
- 55:56lived in Indian and it was flat pancake
- 55:58flat. Now in Raleigh, I'm like,
- 56:01I don't know what I would have done
- 56:02for stroller runs. Like that would be so
- 56:04hard. So Yeah. Where we are out here.
- 56:07It's Hill. Yeah. Yeah. So.
- 56:10Yeah. Yeah. It's and, also, like the downhill.
- 56:13You don't wanna just, like, send it in,
- 56:14like, risk anything. Gotta be careful. Yeah. Yeah.
- 56:17See. Down running. That's scary, but... Yeah. You
- 56:20can have done an entire hour on just
- 56:22the mom talk, here. Oh, for sure. I
- 56:24know. Forget to... This is turned into your
- 56:27mommy podcast now.
- 56:29So you're working with David Roach? I am.
- 56:33Okay. And so
- 56:34you've kind of, like, Fur.
- 56:37I know you're working with Kim Conley and
- 56:40Drew.
- 56:41And now, David,
- 56:43what is the, like, coaching
- 56:45relationship been like for you with all your
- 56:47different coaches?
- 56:49I really value having, like, a strong personal
- 56:52connection with the coach. I was so close
- 56:55and so in sync with
- 56:57coach Robert Gary,
- 56:59and his wife, Frida and, like, you know,
- 57:02we were just so in sync,
- 57:04during my time with Fu Elite,
- 57:08when I was with Kim and Drew, like,
- 57:10it was just me and Kim. You know,
- 57:11they had their bigger group at a certain
- 57:12point, but it was just literally Me and
- 57:14Cam. I lived down the street from them.
- 57:16We would drive to practice together. You know,
- 57:18I would to walk out the door and
- 57:19run together.
- 57:21I was really close with Kim ever since
- 57:24she made, you know, 20 12 when she
- 57:26made that first team.
- 57:28So that was a great,
- 57:30And then I went back to Robert to
- 57:32try and see if I could kinda get
- 57:35after this 20 20, 20 21.
- 57:38Olympic trials and just things just again, injuries
- 57:41just kind of help me back too much.
- 57:44And so... But from there, I did quickly
- 57:46shift to David,
- 57:47I love him and his wife. They actually
- 57:49had... Their their kiddo, the first kiddo is
- 57:52just a few weeks younger than handling.
- 57:55So we kinda went through that together. Oh,
- 57:58and they're expecting a second.
- 58:01I think that's another part of...
- 58:03The challenges of being a mother runner is,
- 58:05like, I do want... We do wanna expand
- 58:07our family. Mh. Then there's a little part
- 58:09of that where I'm like, well, we're in
- 58:10our trying to conceive era.
- 58:12Like,
- 58:13how hard do I really wanna train?
- 58:15And how... Like, do I wanna set a
- 58:17race goal when I'm actually, like, really hoping
- 58:19to have another kiddo?
- 58:21And so
- 58:22I hope I'm pregnant it in that month
- 58:24and I can't run, you know. So so
- 58:25that's So hard. Yeah. That's a challenge. So...
- 58:29I was just, like, so resonating with that
- 58:31because it's, like,
- 58:32you...
- 58:33It's like, you don't wanna put all your
- 58:34eggs in that basket in case it doesn't
- 58:36work out for some reason.
- 58:39But then at the same time, you're like,
- 58:40what if it is? Gonna happen. Like, I
- 58:42don't wanna, like, go all out, and it's
- 58:44like,
- 58:45gosh. Like, you... That's 1 of those things
- 58:47of family planning. Like, you can't go all
- 58:49in either way because you can't
- 58:51assume anything's gonna happen either way. 100 percent.
- 58:55It's so hard
- 58:56emotionally too.
- 58:58Exactly. And then, you know... Yeah. I mean,
- 59:01again, this is this is the mom podcast
- 59:02right here. This is that content, but but,
- 59:04yeah, It is really emotional, and and I'm
- 59:06trying to be very casual about this, like,
- 59:08early...
- 59:09Taking
- 59:10phase of, like, we're just gonna go with
- 59:12the flow. We're just gonna see what happens.
- 59:13I can stress later, you know, but let's
- 59:15just take a few months to just, like,
- 59:17try have fun,
- 59:19but it's hard to not care. Right? Or
- 59:21not to be, like, emotionally invested in, like,
- 59:24oh, what am I feeling? What is that?
- 59:26Like, it's just
- 59:28So...
- 59:29Yeah. So that makes a different... Another challenge
- 59:31for for training and for motivation and for,
- 59:34you know,
- 59:35getting after it. I think that that's just
- 59:39another thing there is just, like, that's why
- 59:42this is, like, woo woo whatever, but, like,
- 59:44just
- 59:45we always hear people talk about, like, being
- 59:47present,
- 59:47and that's why, like, at this phase, like,
- 59:50instead of being, like, I wanna do this
- 59:52in 6 months, I wanna do this. And
- 59:531 year I wanna do this. It's, like,
- 59:55what's happening today?
- 59:57How do I feel today about this? Do
- 59:59I wanna work really hard today? You know?
- 1:00:02Lindsay, that is the my... That is my
- 1:00:04challenge. I always have the 5 year plan.
- 1:00:08The 4 year cycle. Right? The, like, olympic
- 1:00:10cycle we're gonna do this race and this
- 1:00:12race, we're gonna focus on this event, and
- 1:00:14then we're gonna get back and qualify
- 1:00:16and make the team. You know, Like, that
- 1:00:18just is how this my brain works as
- 1:00:21a track person. And so it's so hard,
- 1:00:24you know, to
- 1:00:25let go. But That's what so much of
- 1:00:28parenting and life is. So... Yeah. So much
- 1:00:32unknown.
- 1:00:32Okay. We have to wrap up here. What
- 1:00:35is something professionally or personally that you have
- 1:00:37not done that you would like to do?
- 1:00:39Yeah. I think it'd be the ultra.
- 1:00:41So
- 1:00:42Yes. Love that. 50 k on the horizon.
- 1:00:46We don't know when, but it'll happen. It
- 1:00:48will happen.
- 1:00:49What's the best most recent book you've read?
- 1:00:52Lindsay see. I really just read, like, parenting
- 1:00:54books right now. Has a potty training book.
- 1:00:57I...
- 1:00:58Have you read any good ones? Any good
- 1:01:00parenting books?
- 1:01:03I I liked a lot of the, like,
- 1:01:04montessori, taller, montessori baby.
- 1:01:07Again, marine the o crop. Potty training book.
- 1:01:11And
- 1:01:12yeah. Thinking about it. Like, I do have
- 1:01:14a fiction book that demon copper head that
- 1:01:17I was like, So good. Yeah. It's it.
- 1:01:20I know. I've, like, I've started it. It's
- 1:01:23intense. It's... I mean, it's hard. Yeah. I
- 1:01:25mean, it's it's sad, but it's really good.
- 1:01:27Yes. So, anyway, lots of, you know, I
- 1:01:30read curious George with my kiddo. We're in
- 1:01:32a deep curious George face. So, all all
- 1:01:35kinds of recommendations there for anyone in any
- 1:01:37stage of life.
- 1:01:39Do you have a nonprofit you like to
- 1:01:41support? Love girls in the run. Love love
- 1:01:43love it
- 1:01:44and have, like, ever since my early days
- 1:01:47of being a pro,
- 1:01:48and it's just great because there's always gonna
- 1:01:50be 1 in your region,
- 1:01:52they do amazing things. And, like, that is
- 1:01:54what we're all about is, like, elevating women
- 1:01:56in sport. It starts as being a as
- 1:01:58being a kiddo and and being
- 1:02:01introduced to it and exposed to it and
- 1:02:03seeing strong,
- 1:02:04women seeing your mom out there.
- 1:02:07I'm all about that.
- 1:02:09Yeah. And I'll just add 1 note to
- 1:02:10that.
- 1:02:12I've been talking about a lot about youth
- 1:02:14sports a lot, and
- 1:02:16the youth sport culture is so
- 1:02:19crazy. It's so expensive. It's so exhausting.
- 1:02:23A and people go crazy
- 1:02:25because they want their kids to make like
- 1:02:27high school teams.
- 1:02:29Like, literally, they'll do
- 1:02:31so much travel soccer, All these travel sports,
- 1:02:34very expensive,
- 1:02:35and then their kid doesn't make the team,
- 1:02:38and they give up on sports. And that
- 1:02:39makes me so sad, and I think with
- 1:02:41a program like girls on the run,
- 1:02:43it has nothing to do with making any
- 1:02:45teams. It has nothing to do with what
- 1:02:47kind of star player you'll be. It's about
- 1:02:50instill,
- 1:02:51the love of movement,
- 1:02:53the love of friendship and teamwork and all
- 1:02:55the things that like, we want for a
- 1:02:57life
- 1:02:58lifetime. So, yeah, I'm, like, more passionate about
- 1:03:02that than ever in this age of, like,
- 1:03:05crazy youth sports.
- 1:03:07Yeah.
- 1:03:08Absolutely, all for it. I just felt like
- 1:03:10I had to, like. Let's do it. Rate
- 1:03:13rage on that a little bit.
- 1:03:15Last message to leave with the audience. Yeah.
- 1:03:17I do affirmations with my toddler, and it
- 1:03:20is the sweetest thing to hear him because
- 1:03:23now there's one's. And the 2 that are
- 1:03:24stuck in his head the most that he
- 1:03:26always will start yelling out at bedtime are
- 1:03:29I am worthy and I have purpose. And
- 1:03:32it kind of, like, ties bow on everything
- 1:03:34we've been talking about here of, like,
- 1:03:37you're valid. Your feelings are valid. Your experiences
- 1:03:39are. Like, you don't have to be in
- 1:03:42Olympia to be worthy.
- 1:03:43You don't have to be, you know, the
- 1:03:45star Cpa
- 1:03:47to have a purpose. Like, it can be
- 1:03:49whatever you it it can be whatever it
- 1:03:51needs to be. So You're worthy and you
- 1:03:53of purpose. I think if everyone truly felt
- 1:03:56that deep in their soul.
- 1:03:58We'd be in a little bit of a
- 1:03:59different world. You are an everyday hero. I
- 1:04:03love that. Thank you, Steph. Thank you, Lindsay
- 1:04:05I'm so thrilled to be on with you,
- 1:04:07and it's This has been so much fun.
