- 0:00Welcome back, everybody to the Kenny Wallace show brought to
- 0:04you by Jegs the leader in high performance aftermarket car
- 0:09parts. Go to jegs.com for anything you
- 0:13need for your vehicle. Well, today's the biggest day in
- 0:18the Kenny Wallace show. We grown so much.
- 0:22It's a big day because we are finally going to interview
- 0:24somebody right here. Right now.
- 0:28Our first guest is the owner of the worldwide technology Raceway
- 0:34her nervous. Francois Carlos, welcome great.
- 0:37Be with the Kenny about how about this the first two guys
- 0:41being utilizing the streaming application here, both from st.
- 0:47Louis, you know, we're leading the way into the future racing
- 0:50here. You know, you're exactly right
- 0:54us. Men of age.
- 0:55We're like, what do you mean we can do an interview sitting in
- 0:59our businesses? We don't have to go anywhere and
- 1:02you're right. I really like that.
- 1:03So I was talking to my wife Kim last night and I said, you know,
- 1:08it's a big deal. Interviewing Curtis I said do
- 1:11you think it would be okay if I asked him about his name Curtis?
- 1:16I just love your name. In my wife said it would, it
- 1:19would be appropriate. So Curtis Francois, I just I
- 1:23want to introduce you in front of the crowd one day.
- 1:26Where did that last name come from in your and your family?
- 1:31Well, you know, Kenny it's a great story.
- 1:34So my grandfather was from Belgium.
- 1:36So most people think I was from France, but the family was but
- 1:40my grandfather was from Belgium and like so many he came over
- 1:45right before World War one and brought the Francois name with
- 1:49him and wouldn't be wouldn't be. Here without his efforts to get
- 1:53on that boat back then and bring come to the New World here.
- 1:56So it was just great family history there.
- 1:59Well that is interested. I love that name.
- 2:02Well let's get right to it. We're going to do the show a
- 2:06little different. We're going to go for the
- 2:07exciting stuff and then I want to go to the background of you
- 2:12purchasing, you know the racetrack and you know what's
- 2:15what's going on in that. That timeline.
- 2:18But let's start with last year. I know that you and your team
- 2:24worked extremely hard for years and years to get to the
- 2:28Pinnacle, which is the Nascar Cup Series.
- 2:32I want to know that moment in time a year ago year and a half
- 2:37ago, whenever it was who called you from Nascar, what was it?
- 2:42Like when you found out that your team is going to get that
- 2:47Nascar Cup race? Well, Kenny I got you know it
- 2:52was it was such a process. It went on for a long long
- 2:56period and frankly, I never asked for a cup date.
- 3:02But boy was, I making sure that we were doing everything that
- 3:07would make st. Louis book, attractive as an
- 3:09alternative site for for a nuke update.
- 3:14And so, as I was working with Ben kennedy and his team to
- 3:20really Cover a lot of the different bases.
- 3:22It really just kind of grew organically, but I did finally
- 3:27get that that call that said, hey, we need to start talking.
- 3:30And that's really when you get that call, that was the one
- 3:35where I knew that that we were headed for Uncharted Territory
- 3:39and we just have never looked back from that and just thrilled
- 3:43to be a part of the of the NASCAR family with the cup
- 3:46series and certainly doing everything we can do to do the
- 3:50And proud to 75th anniversary year.
- 3:53Is it fair to say that you really showed up during that
- 3:58Bommarito IndyCar race? I saw it on national TV, it was
- 4:03standing room. Only course our seven-time
- 4:06champion Jimmie Johnson, he made a big deal out about it on
- 4:09social media. Do you feel like that that
- 4:12IndyCar race where you were standing room?
- 4:15Only was that a big deal for you?
- 4:17No doubt that IndyCar erased was Another validator that the st.
- 4:23Louis Market was hungry for racing when fans show up like
- 4:27that. There's just no doubt that that
- 4:31there is depth to the market. And and we had a big crowd, you
- 4:35know stands were full. That's not the easiest thing to
- 4:38do these days and certainly there was work done in advance
- 4:43of that. So with the NASCAR truck series,
- 4:46we were putting big crowds in the stands for those that.
- 4:50Mostly led to the IndyCar race which then led to I think Arc
- 4:55updates oh boy, it's just been over the years.
- 4:58It's step by step by step without just swinging for the
- 5:02fences. We just try not to ever do that.
- 5:04We want to make sure that we're building a very Firm Foundation.
- 5:10We got all the pieces right now that really set us up for, for
- 5:14the future to just see what can be done in the market.
- 5:18That is just really. Motorsports market and I think
- 5:22we're demonstrating that one thing I've always told, you
- 5:25know, Mike Helton. Steve Phelps, everybody at Mass
- 5:28cars? I remind them.
- 5:30That st. Louis is the home of
- 5:32Anheuser-Busch mcdonnell-douglas Monsanto lost him Purina.
- 5:37Now, Enterprise rental car. Is it fair to say that besides
- 5:44it's racing country because we have so many race tracks around
- 5:46here whether it's local race tracks but it seems to me like
- 5:50Louis is a viable Business site to am I right?
- 5:55Or am I wrong? Well, I got you're absolutely
- 5:58right. Kenny and you know one thing one
- 6:03thing that I'm proud of is that that you can never count St.
- 6:07Louis out there is so much depth here as far as the business
- 6:13World goes and quality people. It's a city that I think anyone
- 6:17would be proud to live in when, you know what it's all about.
- 6:20And it's just great to see maybe get a think about st.
- 6:24Louis, at the turn of the century around the World's Fair
- 6:28back. In those days we were there we
- 6:30were the number for city in the in the country and as a matter
- 6:34of fact, just a little history lesson here for those that don't
- 6:37know. We were one of the very first
- 6:39cities to host a race of any sort.
- 6:43So there was a race that was that was hosted sponsored by of
- 6:47all things and Heiser Busch back in.
- 6:50You know, for at the World's Fair.
- 6:53So we got some deep history that I had to.
- 6:56I had to dig deep to find but you know as a fellow race fan
- 7:00and a racer, hey, now you got a little bit more information
- 7:03about St. Louis to share, one thing that
- 7:05I've noticed over the last couple years is that, you know,
- 7:10we lost the st. Louis Rams football team and it
- 7:14seemed like the city said, okay, we got to get on our horse and
- 7:20We got to go here and now, it seems like, you know, now we
- 7:24have the worldwide technology Raceway that's got to cut date
- 7:28and that's big. But now we have STL city which
- 7:32is a big deal, our soccer team. Now, the battle Hawks are back,
- 7:36which are putting in 38,000 people at the Dome.
- 7:41We got the st. Louis Blues, we've got the st.
- 7:44Louis Cardinals, are you and your team?
- 7:47Are you all working as one? Are you in touch?
- 7:50With all the sports. I mean things, like we got so
- 7:53much towards and st. Louis.
- 7:55Now certainly, we talked with, with all the team owners and
- 8:00their staff, and try to coordinate, coordinate around
- 8:04wherever it makes sense. We certainly want to make sure
- 8:08that that we're doing our part to, to be good partners with
- 8:12with the other big teams, I can tell you, as we were working
- 8:16hard on attracting a cup date, Bill DeWitt, Tom Mmmmm.
- 8:20Stillman the Taylor's all were part of meetings that we held
- 8:26with NASCAR, as we were pitching st.
- 8:29Louis, so that camaraderie is, is huge in St.
- 8:33Louis, and I got to just tell you Kenny and I bet you agree
- 8:37that St. Louis would rank on anybody's
- 8:40list is at the top or close to it of the best sports towns in
- 8:45the country. And we love our sports teams and
- 8:49it's great to now be Part of that with our Nascar Cup race.
- 8:52Yeah it makes me very very prideful and you're right Curtis
- 8:56there's no doubt you know, I really like it when I go to the
- 8:58blues games or the Cardinal gangs and I know it's going to
- 9:02happen. One day with our soccer team,
- 9:04I'll be a, I'll be Busch Stadium and all of a sudden they'll
- 9:08introduce a NASCAR race car driver and I just I'm like, nope
- 9:12right now I love that cross marketing.
- 9:15So you know that's just awesome. I just wanted to talk about the
- 9:20unity and St. Louis because I think it's
- 9:22bigger now than it's ever been then.
- 9:25So thanks for those are big names.
- 9:27You mentioned, those are the owners.
- 9:29So, you know, Bill DeWitt owner of the st.
- 9:31Louis Cardinals, then, Stillman with the st.
- 9:34Louis Blues. Those are big names in our town.
- 9:36So let's move on. You know, Curtis, I wanted to
- 9:39be, I wanted to be right? I got my notes, buddy, that's
- 9:44the way it goes. We got to get right.
- 9:46So Once again, before we go back to the past, we know what
- 9:52happened last year for the Cup race, I want to brag on you a
- 9:55little bit. We were sold out, we had an
- 9:58awesome crowd in the Kenny Wallace.
- 10:00Live show. We had 5,000 people, we had
- 10:03great race car drivers. You got, everybody parked in the
- 10:09parking lot. 60,000 people were parked one out our before the
- 10:14rust. So, with all that being said, I
- 10:16thought it really looked Good last year now that we're almost
- 10:20one year later. What's new for the Cup race this
- 10:24year? What's what's the newer we've
- 10:27been? We've been really busy Kenny
- 10:30right after the Cup race. We started on plans for 2023.
- 10:36So 2022 big success. You know, I had my list of the
- 10:41things that I had to do and we did a, you know, we were able to
- 10:44get everyone in and out and I think, In a great fashion, a lot
- 10:49of work went into that but immediately we started on what
- 10:53could we do better. And so we went right to work on
- 10:57Tire list of things for 2023. And so I think what fans are
- 11:02going to notice first, when they get here, is this, the new
- 11:07Enfield Fan Experience, the new Enfield fan garage experience
- 11:12and so, first time anywhere in the Midwest, Fans are going to
- 11:16be able to, with their infield. Pass are going to be able to
- 11:20walk the garages and we've created a new structure, their
- 11:25expanded dramatically the existing garages and frankly,
- 11:30they'll just be treated to the experience of walking through
- 11:33the garages and then free flowing out to food, areas,
- 11:36food, court area of lots of vendors right there on the
- 11:40infield. So I think that's going to be
- 11:42just a super New Edition there as fans show up and Have you
- 11:46been able to see it all from the grandstands?
- 11:49But walking right through there will be just key for folks to
- 11:52enjoy that. So that's one thing that I'm
- 11:56proud of we've been working hard on it and certainly lots of
- 11:59others certain beer stands. Wow!
- 12:02I mean yes let's just say you're not going to have to walk far
- 12:07for a beer this year. We've about tripled the amount
- 12:10of point of sale that we have or anything from ice cream cones to
- 12:15To that Budweiser and Bud Light and all the other brands that we
- 12:21have so that's just going to be super as well to to really see
- 12:26fans interact with with those items.
- 12:28But one thing we want to work on to as we expanded the camping,
- 12:33we sold out all of our camping that was directly next to the
- 12:37racetrack. So we've almost doubled the
- 12:39amount of camping spots there. There's going to be bands in the
- 12:43in the, in the campgrounds this year.
- 12:46That'll be fun, and then we've just expanded our music festival
- 12:51even larger than what it was last year.
- 12:53So lots of entertainment coming, Dierks Bentley's going to be
- 12:57there. Bailey, Zimmerman, Flo Rida
- 13:00Brothers Osborne and about 20 other of our great local
- 13:04musicians that are going to be around playing in five different
- 13:07stages that we have. So there's going to be a race,
- 13:10there's going to be a music festival, we've got the 5K
- 13:14Jackie Joyner-Kersee. Rehearse.
- 13:16He's 5K first time she's ever had one on Saturday with Jackie
- 13:21you know six-time Olympic medal winner.
- 13:24She's going to be handing out the metals so that's going to be
- 13:27a great opportunity for those guys would have walked for the
- 13:30st. Louis Chad, John Hersey, yes,
- 13:33yes. Just a dear person and cannot
- 13:36wait to honor her. And that way and you know, one
- 13:39thing for those that are Walker's, give me will bring
- 13:42your pet along mainly dogs. I don't think anybody They're
- 13:46cats, but ghetto, mainly dogs, then add that are going to be
- 13:50also have a metal for the dog that makes the walk, right?
- 13:53So just making sure they were including everyone there.
- 13:57Yeah, Curtis it sounds to me like you're creating a complete
- 14:02experience. Dirk's, Brent, Dierks, Bentley,
- 14:05music Racine. We've got a lot more than just a
- 14:11race track. That's that's what you're really
- 14:13focusing on, and I see that. That seems to be the New Deal
- 14:18throughout all of racing. I like what I see at Phoenix
- 14:21Richmond come and spend, you know, the whole weekend at
- 14:27worldwide technology Raceway because we have more than just a
- 14:30race. Yeah.
- 14:31It no doubt about it. You know, the race is the
- 14:34Superstar and there's no doubt that the race here last year was
- 14:41unbelievable. You had the drama with, with
- 14:44Danny and Ross. Another show.
- 14:48What a show. You know the the slide job there
- 14:52at the end with Joey and Kyle was just unbelievable.
- 14:56Great. Great winter with Joey and that
- 14:59was something. Hey you don't know until you see
- 15:02it. I've never seen a Cup car race
- 15:05on my track until that weekend. Good points.
- 15:08Yeah. And so you know talk about going
- 15:11to Vegas and putting all your chips in we had not seen.
- 15:15And what was going to happen. Until we got those cup cars on
- 15:18the track and it turned out fantastic.
- 15:22We were seeing that two and three wide racing that we love
- 15:25to see. And you know, I think this year
- 15:28will just be another great example so Cup race.
- 15:31Clearly the show of what I like is that there's no downtime,
- 15:36there's something going all the time.
- 15:39So, hey, you want to go get some food?
- 15:41Listen, to a little music. Come back to the race, you can
- 15:44do all of those different things, pre-race, special, you
- 15:48and I got to have them spend a little time on the stage, had
- 15:51some fun with that huge crowd. So that was just, you know, a
- 15:55lot of those things that are just entertainment.
- 15:58This is a happening, this event is a happening in St.
- 16:01Louis. And, and we just want to make
- 16:03sure as the fans come out. They feel like one, they got
- 16:07their entertainment dollars worth.
- 16:09But more important for me is making sure that there Having
- 16:13the opportunity to make a memory with their family and take
- 16:17something away with them. Yeah and I agree with you 110%.
- 16:21I know last year for the cup rice, I got there at 6:00 in the
- 16:25morning helping do some TV, but it was just like people are
- 16:28going and doing all day long because you had so many
- 16:32activities and I like it that your team takes the pride in
- 16:36keeping the fans entertained, whether it's on the big screen.
- 16:40That's what I like is you got a lot of big screens.
- 16:42He's keeping the fans knowledgeable, what's happening,
- 16:45where it's happening. And that kind of leads me into
- 16:48this, this little segment to worldwide technology Raceway is
- 16:53way more than just the oval track.
- 16:56You know, I see, you know, the go-kart track which I know is
- 17:01not in action during the cup weekend, but I love your go-kart
- 17:05track. It's a real one right in the
- 17:08middle of the racetrack. You have wrote of course, you
- 17:11have NHRA drag I seen you've really built a racing complex
- 17:17there. Yeah and that was I think you
- 17:19know part of the vision back in 2011 when I was looking at the
- 17:24facility and frankly I just couldn't believe that it closed.
- 17:29But I was looking at looking at it through the eyes of a Saint
- 17:32Louis because I knew that the support was there, we just
- 17:35needed to package all that we had in a way that was one fully
- 17:40being used and utilized. But also, you know, we knew we
- 17:45had the fans. So it starts Kenny with, you
- 17:47know, the NHRA drag racing happening happening and I open
- 17:51the gates, and 2012, and we were all but sold out the first year.
- 17:56Got to remember, I had never owned a racetrack before and now
- 18:00I'm dealing with a sellout crowd.
- 18:02So talk about baptism by fire, it was it was absolutely that
- 18:07but we got it done and there was a lot of Grace I think given to
- 18:11us by the fans for our Here and always since then I've made that
- 18:17commitment that every time a fan comes back each year.
- 18:21They're going to see that we continue to lean into the
- 18:24facility and and really just continue to make it better every
- 18:28year. So whether it's NHRA Racing or
- 18:31Formula Drift or Hot Rod Power Tour or, you know, we've got the
- 18:36go-karting now that we're we've been doing since 2013 that gives
- 18:39us a great opportunity to bring younger younger.
- 18:42Unger kids into racing. Josiah is got our sponsorship
- 18:49this year, the young man from East St.
- 18:52Louis and it's just those are the types of things were were
- 18:56able to give back in our community and this facility it's
- 19:00really has it all. Heck, we have a golf course you
- 19:03know so a nice of them to thank you.
- 19:06Yeah Wallace and loves it. So when he loves the golf
- 19:09course, that's saying something that's the real deal.
- 19:12No. Out about it.
- 19:14Yeah, so you know we've talked about where we're at right now.
- 19:20I think this is the time. I'd like to go back a little bit
- 19:23and tell some of the historical stories about you purchasing
- 19:29this racetrack. So the first one out there that
- 19:33I want you to tell me if it's true or not, if it's true.
- 19:38Say it, tell us what happened. If not go not true, I heard that
- 19:42when you Bought this racetrack. 56 Farmers own.
- 19:48Patches like this farmer owned one and two this farmer own
- 19:52turns three, and four. Is that true?
- 19:56That is absolutely true. It was, it was something else.
- 20:01Yeah. When I first came out, I looked
- 20:03at it. Yeah.
- 20:04And it was there was Weeds growing everywhere and I kind of
- 20:08I could see that it was only 13 years old at the time, but
- 20:11racetrack takes continual maintenance, and had sat for,
- 20:14you know, 10 12 months. And so I saw the hey, we have
- 20:17some Clean up to do. But then as I got deeper into
- 20:23looking at the opportunity, I looked at what they call the
- 20:26plat, okay? And that shows who owns what,
- 20:30and I saw seven different owners and 14 different Parcels on that
- 20:37original 150 acres that we had and recognized that I was going
- 20:43to have to go back into my bag of tricks and that is, you know,
- 20:47I'm in the real estate. Development business and so here
- 20:50we go. You know, I was uniquely
- 20:52prepared to tackle what had been a problem since the beginning
- 20:58you did not have that flexibility that you needed to
- 21:01do to make changes and to grow with the sport.
- 21:05And so that was that was problem.
- 21:08Number one that we were going to do so I can get and that was
- 21:12kind of brought to to head prior, to me, actually closing
- 21:15on the racetrack but we've never looked back and So you know, now
- 21:20we're over 700 acres and we own practically speaking, everything
- 21:24around us so that we have plenty of room to grow, but also to
- 21:29make sure that we're being good, neighbors, and making sure that
- 21:32we have plenty of buffer around us and that we're not causing
- 21:36any kind of problems other people around us.
- 21:38So but that is true. Wow, you're my hero and I know
- 21:44anybody in the real estate business knows that that takes a
- 21:47lot of work to get S7 owners together and say I want to buy
- 21:51this Racetrack and hey you know listen thank you so much.
- 21:55You know how much big the racing Community is around here with
- 21:59Kenny Schrader. My brother, Rusty Wallace, Carl
- 22:02Edwards. Jamie McMurray the great Larry
- 22:05Phillips. We lost Larry, but just a
- 22:08reminder I know you know Curtis but this is we're proud of this
- 22:12area and you know, without people like you, you know, we're
- 22:17going to Who's racing. So I can't believe that story
- 22:22but now that you said it's real, it's out there and up.
- 22:25Thank you for keeping racing in st.
- 22:28Louis. And now you know the biggest
- 22:30form of motor sports here in st. Louis because of you, okay,
- 22:36anything up wasn't man. That's humbling for you to say
- 22:39that. I just love it.
- 22:40I haven't been really thinking too much about just everyday
- 22:44showing up and making sure that I'm I'm doing everything I can
- 22:49do to set the path forward for racing in the Midwest for the
- 22:53st. Louis region.
- 22:55And so I don't get really too caught up on looking back about
- 22:59what's done but when you bring things like that up it certainly
- 23:02is humbling and weirdest. Listen, I am thrilled that I was
- 23:07given the opportunity had some of the tools that I needed to
- 23:11revive a racetrack to frankly deserve better.
- 23:14I mean, it really did. It was it's a great.
- 23:18TT and we're just going to continue to lean in and and
- 23:22every single year, I promise that you will see new things
- 23:26coming as we continue this journey with with cup and all of
- 23:30our other series. Curtis are Roger Penske
- 23:36yourself, and great businessmen. We were always looking forward
- 23:40and we fix problems and you're the man for the job and, hey,
- 23:44let's end this incredible interview.
- 23:47The first one On the Kenny Wallace show like this June 4th
- 23:52is the Cup race. What can we expect this year?
- 23:58Will there will there be activities?
- 24:00That Anheuser-Busch are we going to do a hauler parade?
- 24:03So let's end the interview. Oh, what do you have in store or
- 24:07we still working on things? Can people go to Anheuser-Busch
- 24:11and expect to see a little bit of racing there or or what do we
- 24:15look alike? Well, you know, Well, we've got
- 24:19a lot in the works that I and I don't want to give up all my
- 24:22thunder here but it's good. I can tell you for sure that
- 24:26we're working on a couple of things with Anheuser-Busch right
- 24:29now and those will be fun is people come and get to be a part
- 24:34of those. As we get into Saturday, we've
- 24:39got the truck race and then we have the JJ K 5K which is
- 24:44happening which is going to be just fantastic with Jackie
- 24:47there. And And you know, we've got that
- 24:49piece. I'm very proud of simply because
- 24:52Jackie does such great work in the community but she's actually
- 24:56going to be handing out the actual metals and the metals are
- 25:01in her likeness that. Let's just say, there's a bit of
- 25:04similarity similarity to to her original gold, silver, bronze
- 25:09metal. So it's going to be a
- 25:10particularly neat, participant, metal and winter metal, so that
- 25:13happens, then we, then we go right into the Flo Rida.
- 25:18A concert Tim Duggars going to be here on Saturday night.
- 25:22So it's going to be a party Saturday night.
- 25:24And then it really kicks off on Sunday with just events
- 25:30throughout the day. Obviously, we're Bailey
- 25:32Zimmerman is going to be playing in the morning.
- 25:36Brothers, Osborne in the morning and our concert with Dierks
- 25:41Bentley is a full concert after the race.
- 25:45It's a business name. It's a big name and it's it.
- 25:48Is a full, you know, full they called a full set, right?
- 25:51I'm learning a lot more about concerts these days.
- 25:53So all the lingo, all the lingo and that's going to be a big
- 25:56deal, so that'll be after the race.
- 25:59And so we're it is going to be a day like we've never had on
- 26:03Sunday June the 4th certainly. I just anticipate that the
- 26:09racing again is just going to be spectacular.
- 26:12So we're praying for great weather.
- 26:14We're usually usually have had some super luck.
- 26:18That on our big events and we think that when folks come back
- 26:22out this year, they're going to be treated to something special
- 26:25once again, card is. Thank you so much.
