Speaker 4: I want to welcome to the show, Mayor of the
• 2:32
Speaker 4: City of Hurricane Scott Edwards. Good morning, Sarah, Welcome to
• 2:34
  Speaker 4: the show.
• 2:35
Speaker 5: Good morning, sir. Hope you're doing well today.
• 2:38
Speaker 4: I am, and I hope you are as well. I
• 2:40
Speaker 4: want to start with and we are going to talk
• 2:43
Speaker 4: about some positive things, because I think right now we
• 2:46
Speaker 4: probably need a little positivity, and we'll get that a
• 2:48
Speaker 4: little bit later on. But you saw, like everybody else yesterday,
• 2:51
Speaker 4: Mayor the sad news out of Utah yesterday, a tragedy.
• 2:58
Speaker 4: No matter what your political persuasion or at least in
• 3:00
Speaker 4: my opinion, it should be your thoughts.
• 3:04
Speaker 5: Well, I'm actually real quick. I'm going to pivot back
• 3:07
Speaker 5: to nine eleven and talk about that for a moment,
• 3:11
Speaker 5: and I want to compare something. You know, you know,
• 3:13
Speaker 5: twenty four years ago, you know, the militant Alamic terrorist group,
• 3:18
Speaker 5: you know, let Bosam b in Lauden the attacked attacked
• 3:20
Speaker 5: us and nearly three thousand people died in the nine
• 3:24
Speaker 5: eleven attacks, and and you know, everybody said, hey, it's
• 3:27
  Speaker 5: a it's a new type of war that we're that
• 3:30
  Speaker 5: we're fighting. It's it's a new type of war. And
• 3:32
Speaker 5: America was shaken on that day twenty four years ago,
• 3:36
Speaker 5: absolutely shaken. And then what happened yesterday, and and even
• 3:41
Speaker 5: with it all the other stuff, it's been happening to
• 3:44
Speaker 5: get a twenty three year old Ukrainian that was stabbed
• 3:46
Speaker 5: to death three times, and in Charlotte just recently, and
• 3:50
Speaker 5: everybody just sit and watched and didn't help her. And
• 3:52
Speaker 5: then Charlie was assassinated yesterday. And I mean, this is
• 3:58
Speaker 5: this is a new I hate to say, it's like
• 4:00
Speaker 5: a new type of war. America is going to be
• 4:02
Speaker 5: forever changed by this. By what happened yesterday, We're shaken again,
• 4:07
Speaker 5: you know, like we were twenty four years ago. We
• 4:09
Speaker 5: were absolutely shaken to the bone now. And it just
• 4:13
Speaker 5: goes through me that someone, no matter what side you
• 4:17
Speaker 5: were on, if you like Charlie Kirker or didn't like
• 4:20
Speaker 5: his politics, that doesn't matter. He was simply having a
• 4:23
Speaker 5: discussion out of college. And even folks that didn't like
• 4:28
Speaker 5: what he said, a lot, most of the folks I've
• 4:31
Speaker 5: talked to, they still respected Charlie kirk because he was
• 4:33
Speaker 5: a master at at just talking to especially college kids
• 4:38
Speaker 5: and debates. And he was just doing what is just
• 4:41
Speaker 5: talking and he got murdered by talking. That's absolutely horrendous
• 4:47
Speaker 5: and I hate that. And it comes twenty four years
• 4:51
Speaker 5: after the the nine eleven attacks. I'll never forget people
• 4:54
Speaker 5: saying it's a new type of war. Now we're it's again.
• 4:58
Speaker 5: America's shaken, as you can tell, shake him well.
• 5:00
Speaker 4: And I'll say this, Mayor, and you could agree or disagree.
• 5:06
Speaker 4: I am a lot more concerned about the war that
• 5:11
Speaker 4: America is having on other Americans than I am on
• 5:15
  Speaker 4: anything overseas.
• 5:17
Speaker 5: Correct. And when I said it's a new type of war,
• 5:19
Speaker 5: it's within us. It's within the United States, within our boundaries.
• 5:24
Speaker 5: And I hate that. I mean, again, no matter your politics,
• 5:28
Speaker 5: this man was simply it was free speech and having
• 5:34
Speaker 5: a debate. And even people that don't like him and
• 5:37
Speaker 5: didn't like him, they debated him back and forth, and
• 5:40
Speaker 5: some of them I watch him a lot, some of
• 5:43
Speaker 5: them that absolutely on the other side, far left, would say,
• 5:47
Speaker 5: they would smile afterwards and say can I still get
• 5:49
Speaker 5: one of your hats? Or can I get something? So
• 5:51
Speaker 5: they didn't hate him. They didn't agree with him. They
• 5:54
Speaker 5: absolutely did not agree with him, but they didn't hate
• 5:56
Speaker 5: him and want him dead.
• 5:58
Speaker 4: So as you know through me, yeah, I know, I
• 6:02
  Speaker 4: know America devastated.
• 6:03
  Speaker 5: I'm devastated.
• 6:04
Speaker 4: I know, Mayor, and you and I had set this
• 6:06
Speaker 4: interview up a couple of days ago, following your appearance
• 6:08
Speaker 4: on Metro News Midday, and we were texting back and
• 6:10
Speaker 4: forth this morning about whether you wanted to continue with it,
• 6:13
Speaker 4: and I appreciate you continue with I want to pivot
• 6:15
Speaker 4: now to nine and to nine to eleven. You talked about,
• 6:20
Speaker 4: you know, where we were as America, and listeners have
• 6:23
Speaker 4: heard me say this over and over again. Uh, and
• 6:27
Speaker 4: we remember nine to eleven, Mayor Edwards. Uh, But I
• 6:31
Speaker 4: but I remember nine to twelve.
• 6:34
Speaker 5: Do you remember nine well?
• 6:35
Speaker 4: Do you remember nine twelve?
• 6:36
Speaker 5: Well? There were so many United States flags American flags everywhere.
• 6:43
Speaker 5: People loved everyone. I don't care which side of the eye,
• 6:45
Speaker 5: which which where your politics were. We all came together,
• 6:49
Speaker 5: we all hugged each other, we loved each other, and
• 6:53
Speaker 5: what a great I mean, you hate to say that
• 6:54
Speaker 5: was a that was wonderful on that day and the
• 6:57
Speaker 5: and the weeks after, because we were we were Americans,
• 7:01
Speaker 5: and we were one, and we have went so far
• 7:05
Speaker 5: past that that it's unfathomable to me how we got
• 7:09
Speaker 5: to where we're at today.
• 7:10
Speaker 4: You're exactly right. We're talking to Hurricane Mayor Scott Edwards.
• 7:13
Speaker 4: The Dave Island Show on five. Adie Live has brought
• 7:15
Speaker 4: to you parted by Live Healthy West Virginia presented by
• 7:17
Speaker 4: WVU Medicine, a podcast promoting healthier lifestyles than to be
• 7:20
Speaker 4: on the State. Jack have alatest episodes of wv Metro
• 7:23
Speaker 4: News Dot common of the podcast menu. Let's transition a
• 7:26
Speaker 4: little bit. I mentioned earlier that I had you on
• 7:29
Speaker 4: Metro News Midday. You are a mayor this week on
• 7:31
Speaker 4: Mayor Monday. We feature a different mayor on the show
• 7:33
Speaker 4: during the two o'clock hour every day, and I appreciate
• 7:35
Speaker 4: you taking time out of your schedule, and in that interview,
• 7:39
Speaker 4: you dropped something on us earlier about a big event
• 7:43
Speaker 4: coming to Hurricane the twenty twenty five Hybricon Games. I
• 7:47
Speaker 4: had never heard of it, but not exactly the target
• 7:50
Speaker 4: audience here. I looked it up. I googled it. I
• 7:54
Speaker 4: you know, your crew there, including Amanda, sent me some
• 7:57
Speaker 4: stuff on it. This is a huge event coming to
• 8:01
Speaker 4: the Kanav Valley and even even more Huger. I'm gonna
• 8:04
Speaker 4: just make my English teachers drive off the road somewhere
• 8:07
Speaker 4: about the guy that's coming to her and that's putting
• 8:09
Speaker 4: this whole thing together.
• 8:11
Speaker 5: Yes, I will agree with you. It is more Huger,
• 8:13
Speaker 5: more a huge church. We'll both drive our English teachers crazy.
• 8:17
Speaker 5: So Austin Alexander, now he's an elite athlete, he's a veteran,
• 8:21
Speaker 5: he's a huge social media influencer. He gets somewhere between
• 8:25
Speaker 5: eighty and one hundred million views per month.
• 8:28
Speaker 4: That's per month mayor per month per.
• 8:31
Speaker 5: Month, that's per month. And he puts on the Hybercon Games.
• 8:36
Speaker 5: Last year it was on Catalina Island in California. And
• 8:40
Speaker 5: what it is a it's a group of forty eight
• 8:43
Speaker 5: extremely elite athletes that they actually have to have to
• 8:47
Speaker 5: they can't just sign up and they participate. They have
• 8:50
Speaker 5: to go through a lot of stuff before he even
• 8:51
Speaker 5: allows them in. They have to qualify and they have
• 8:54
Speaker 5: to pay to be in and all that. And we
• 8:58
Speaker 5: have been able to convince him to come to Hurricane.
• 9:02
Speaker 5: And Matt Stevens was shot by ore Fitness. He's been
• 9:06
Speaker 5: a huge, huge part of that and he knows Austin
• 9:09
Speaker 5: and it's just wonderful that he's gonna bring the Hybricon
• 9:12
Speaker 5: Games to Hurricane. And that's October twenty second through the
• 9:15
Speaker 5: twenty fifth. And just to give you an idea of Dave.
• 9:18
Speaker 5: I know most of these things you're familiar with because
• 9:20
Speaker 5: you do them in the evening. Well like, for instance,
• 9:25
Speaker 5: the Grit Day, the log chop, ax throwing, you know,
• 9:30
Speaker 5: ride through town. They're gonna be on bikes, they're gonna
• 9:32
Speaker 5: be on Miexed Mountain trails, They're they're gonna be I'm
• 9:36
Speaker 5: trying to see what else. So I'm here on my list.
• 9:38
Speaker 5: Here there's gonna be like a Survivor day, you know,
• 9:41
Speaker 5: where they all day long they have to survive. They
• 9:43
Speaker 5: have to build fires, they have to knife an ax throw,
• 9:46
Speaker 5: boathon shooting. I mean, there's there's all these extreme events
• 9:52
Speaker 5: where they have to lift, all these heavy weights, all
• 9:54
Speaker 5: this stuff that you and I don't do.
• 9:56
Speaker 4: Day I'll say that, but I watched it on TV.
• 9:59
Speaker 5: Ones Yes to me too. It's way more than what
• 10:02
Speaker 5: I'm just saying here. There's so many things that he
• 10:04
Speaker 5: has not announced, and he won't announce until they get here. Yeah,
• 10:08
Speaker 5: but it's extreme, extreme elite athletes, and I don't see
• 10:13
Speaker 5: how they do it.
• 10:14
Speaker 4: And the following that this guy and I did a
• 10:16
Speaker 4: little deep dive, you know, with the information that Amanda
• 10:19
Speaker 4: in your office sent me, I mean again, we're talking
• 10:22
Speaker 4: about somebody who has followers of eighty to one hundred
• 10:26
Speaker 4: million people that follow this guy and follow these sports.
• 10:30
Speaker 4: And look, I'm a sports fanatic. You know that about me,
• 10:33
Speaker 4: mayor baseball, football, I love it all. This is a
• 10:36
Speaker 4: whole different level of what these people are doing.
• 10:38
Speaker 5: It's a whole different level. And this is an international competition.
• 10:42
Speaker 5: We know right now there's one from France, two from
• 10:44
Speaker 5: the UK, and one from Mexico that will be participating,
• 10:47
Speaker 5: along with forty some other elites that have made the
• 10:50
Speaker 5: cut to get in. And here's how popular he is.
• 10:53
Speaker 5: And I knew he was popular, and he had he
• 10:56
Speaker 5: came a couple of weeks ago for Rally in the Valley,
• 10:59
Speaker 5: which was another lead athlete event we have in Hurricane
• 11:01
Speaker 5: in Putnam County, and we were at the we were
• 11:04
Speaker 5: at the way Pull at the Valley Park and there
• 11:05
Speaker 5: were three lifeguards working that day because all these elite
• 11:09
Speaker 5: athletes were in the water and you know, we had
• 11:11
Speaker 5: to have lifeguards on duty. So afterwards, I brought the
• 11:14
Speaker 5: three lifeguards. These are three high school kids, two from
• 11:16
Speaker 5: Hurricane one Winnfield. I said, hey, would you all like
• 11:19
Speaker 5: to meet? You all know who that guy is. And
• 11:21
Speaker 5: they're like, oh, we follow him, we love him. That's
• 11:23
Speaker 5: Austin Alexander. I mean all three of these two boys
• 11:27
Speaker 5: and one girl, they all following that all Austin. And
• 11:31
Speaker 5: I've I've spoken to a lot of high school students
• 11:34
Speaker 5: since then, since a couple of weeks ago. Nearly everybody
• 11:36
Speaker 5: I know follows this guy.
• 11:38
  Speaker 4: Hmm.
• 11:38
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 11:39
Speaker 4: It's it's amazing. And and the amount of people that
• 11:42
Speaker 4: follow this sort of thing that are going to come
• 11:45
Speaker 4: into Hurricane, and not just Hurricane but the surrounding area
• 11:48
Speaker 4: is because I mean, Hurricane's not going to be able
• 11:50
Speaker 4: to hold all this thing as far as the people
• 11:51
Speaker 4: that are going to come in for this. So you're
• 11:53
Speaker 4: going to see it's going to help out Barbersville, and
• 11:55
Speaker 4: it's going to help out Saint Albans in South Charleston
• 11:58
Speaker 4: and all these other communities.
• 12:00
Speaker 5: You know, we you know, Meek's Mountain Trails, which started
• 12:03
Speaker 5: in twenty eighteen has really been the catalyst for all this.
• 12:07
Speaker 5: My friend Brandon Dorner planned one little tiny season, started
• 12:10
Speaker 5: digging trails in twenty eighteen with these two little kids.
• 12:14
Speaker 5: And now look where we're at today. And you know
• 12:16
Speaker 5: Brandon and the story behind that, that's a story for
• 12:19
Speaker 5: a different day. But he planned one little seed. We have,
• 12:23
Speaker 5: you know, thirty six miles of hand dug trails, forty
• 12:27
Speaker 5: thousand man hours and all these events continue to be
• 12:31
Speaker 5: held here in Hurak, and it's the gym of Hreaken
• 12:33
Speaker 5: for sure. And that's why they want to be here
• 12:36
Speaker 5: is really for two reasons. We have the facilities and
• 12:41
Speaker 5: we're welcoming, and that's what we keep hearing from everybody.
• 12:44
Speaker 5: We are so welcoming compared to other places they go.
• 12:46
Speaker 4: Now, what's the dates of this again, ma'am?
• 12:48
Speaker 5: The dates are October the twenty second through the twenty fifth,
• 12:52
Speaker 5: and the twenty fifth is going to be the field
• 12:54
Speaker 5: spectator day. That's the day where we expect a lot
• 12:59
  Speaker 5: of spectators.
• 13:00
Speaker 4: And of course we'll be talking about it between now
• 13:02
Speaker 4: and then. Have you on. Would love to have mister
• 13:04
Speaker 4: Alexander on the show as well, if you can make
• 13:05
Speaker 4: that happen. You know, people you can swing this. I
• 13:07
Speaker 4: love to have him on the show as well.
• 13:09
Speaker 5: I've already talked to him and he said he's willing
• 13:11
Speaker 5: to come on your show whenever you'd like.
• 13:13
Speaker 4: Great sounds good. Hey, real quick before we let you go,
• 13:16
Speaker 4: I do want to talk about some of the development
• 13:18
Speaker 4: in Hurricane. The announcement was made a couple of weeks ago,
• 13:21
Speaker 4: but this major housing development going on right there in
• 13:24
Speaker 4: the heart of hurricane. What can you tell us about that?
• 13:26
Speaker 4: I know I talked to Morgantini from the development Authority
• 13:30
Speaker 4: and they're planning an event. I'll have her on to
• 13:31
Speaker 4: talk about a little bit more, which, you know, because
• 13:33
Speaker 4: somebody's got to build these things, somebody's got to put
• 13:35
Speaker 4: them in and they're having an event for contractors and
• 13:39
Speaker 4: things of that, and as we get closer, I'll talk
• 13:41
Speaker 4: more about that. But what can you can you give
• 13:42
Speaker 4: us a quick one minute or so update about what's
• 13:44
  Speaker 4: going on there.
• 13:45
Speaker 5: Absolutely main street of Hurricane, there's a seventy acre pars
• 13:49
Speaker 5: or property that was sold by the family that had
• 13:52
Speaker 5: it for one hundred years or whatever, sold to a
• 13:56
Speaker 5: gentleman and he sold it to a developer and four
• 13:59
Speaker 5: hundred plus US probably four twenty four forty homes will
• 14:03
Speaker 5: be built and that's gonna start very soon. Infrastructure will start, uh,
• 14:07
Speaker 5: you know, roads, underground utilities, all that type of stuff
• 14:10
Speaker 5: will start very very soon, and we are we are
• 14:13
Speaker 5: looking forward to it. And it's gonna it's not gonna
• 14:15
Speaker 5: be an overnight build four hundred houses. It'll take a
• 14:20
Speaker 5: few years to build all that. But local contractors, local subs,
• 14:25
Speaker 5: they're gonna do most of the work. And that's what
• 14:27
Speaker 5: I like in Morgan Tenny. I'm on the Development thirty board.
• 14:31
Speaker 5: She's put together a wonderful and you can talk about
• 14:34
Speaker 5: that later, but a group where people can come there
• 14:37
Speaker 5: signing up. We want all local subs to be able
• 14:41
Speaker 5: to do all the work. That's that's the goal, and
• 14:44
Speaker 5: that's wonderful. And then and then there's also another ninety
• 14:49
Speaker 5: five homes being built not too far away from there
• 14:52
Speaker 5: as well. That's going to happen soon. And then the
• 14:55
Speaker 5: three or four a Valley Point, which Alan Dall's building,
• 14:58
Speaker 5: that's almost that's over halfway completed, and there's waiting lists.
• 15:03
Speaker 5: We need homes so bad, and I'll tell you real quick,
• 15:07
Speaker 5: a lot of these homes, you know, there's gonna be
• 15:10
Speaker 5: new young people move in here. There's gonna be people
• 15:12
Speaker 5: move out of their current homes and move over there.
• 15:14
Speaker 5: But there's also gonna be a lot of older folks
• 15:18
Speaker 5: that maybe live in a two story home. I've talked
• 15:20
Speaker 5: to so many of those that want out of those
• 15:22
Speaker 5: homes and go into like a patio bedroom home and
• 15:27
Speaker 5: it will free up there five thousand square at home
• 15:29
Speaker 5: for other younger families. So it's all going to work
• 15:33
Speaker 5: out wonderful. And with the closing interchange opening up soon
• 15:38
Speaker 5: that that's going to alleviate a lot of the traffic
• 15:41
Speaker 5: that these new homes will bring. So it should work
• 15:43
Speaker 5: hand in hand. There's still a lot of work to do.
• 15:45
Speaker 5: We work with the doh and all those folks, but
• 15:48
Speaker 5: we just need to bring it all together. And it's
• 15:50
Speaker 5: happening now, and I'll look so forward to the growth
• 15:52
Speaker 5: that's happening. There's so much more and that we can
• 15:54
Speaker 5: do that another day.
• 15:55
Speaker 4: All right, Mayor, I appreciate it as always the talk soon,

• 19:00
Speaker 10: Good morning, Thanks for having me, Dave.
• 19:01
Speaker 4: Thanks for being a first You know, we'll start off
• 19:04
Speaker 4: with what some serious stuff here, just like I did
• 19:06
Speaker 4: with Mayor Edwards, the senseless death yesterday of a very
• 19:09
Speaker 4: important young man that regardless of his politics, no one
• 19:11
Speaker 4: can deny the impact that Charlie Kirk had a lot
• 19:14
Speaker 4: of had a lot of young people in America.
• 19:17
Speaker 10: Yeah, let me echo the comments of earlier from the
• 19:19
Speaker 10: mayor that first off, this is an absolute tragedy. This
• 19:23
Speaker 10: is a man, Charlie Kirk, who is a husband, a father,
• 19:28
Speaker 10: and a Christian and a member of his community, who
• 19:33
Speaker 10: all he wanted to do was start discussion, have people
• 19:39
Speaker 10: talk about the issues that's going on in America, in
• 19:42
Speaker 10: our country, in our states, in our communities, and just
• 19:47
Speaker 10: understand that by conversation we can move forward together. This
• 19:52
  Speaker 10: isn't a man that was elected. This isn't a man
• 19:55
Speaker 10: who cast a vote or oversaw government. This is an
• 20:00
Speaker 10: individual who only wanted to express his freedom of speech
• 20:05
Speaker 10: and share his ideas and opinions and listen to other people.
• 20:11
Speaker 10: And this man was assassinated because of his voice, because
• 20:15
Speaker 10: of his message, and that right there is an absolute tragedy.
• 20:20
  Speaker 10: In America politics.
• 20:22
Speaker 4: I one hundred percent agree. And as we speak the
• 20:26
Speaker 4: we understand that a weapon has now been recovered. That's
• 20:28
Speaker 4: according they just had a briefing for the FBI, and
• 20:30
Speaker 4: you saw that a weapon has been recovered, but that's
• 20:32
Speaker 4: the shooter remains large, and you know, it's we don't
• 20:36
Speaker 4: know anything about the shooter. And I'm gonna get I'm
• 20:38
Speaker 4: gonna do a little commentary myself and I had a
• 20:40
Speaker 4: little bit later on how you know in our society,
• 20:42
Speaker 4: we're so polarized. Everybody jumps to conclusions. We don't know
• 20:45
Speaker 4: anything about this guy. We don't know the somebody on
• 20:48
Speaker 4: the left did it. We don't know that somebody on
• 20:49
Speaker 4: the right did it. We just simply we just simply
• 20:52
Speaker 4: don't know. I will say this though, I am happy
• 20:54
Speaker 4: with anyone, regardless of their political party, that can get people,
• 20:58
Speaker 4: get young people involved in uh and want to engage.
• 21:03
Speaker 4: All Right, A quick word from you about about Patriot
• 21:05
Speaker 4: Days is now known nine to eleven.
• 21:07
Speaker 10: Yeah, uh, you know, we always say uh, never forget. Well,
• 21:10
Speaker 10: I think we also need to add in there and
• 21:12
Speaker 10: always educate, you know, Dave, before we started the show,
• 21:15
Speaker 10: you and I were talking there are college students who
• 21:18
Speaker 10: weren't even born. Yeah, when nine to eleven that tragedy.
• 21:21
Speaker 4: I've never lived in a in a pre nine to
• 21:24
Speaker 4: eleven war with T. S A and with all these
• 21:26
Speaker 4: other all these changes that that that have been made
• 21:29
Speaker 4: be calls with nine to eleven.
• 21:30
Speaker 10: You know, uh, And I think that this is something
• 21:33
Speaker 10: that we need to uh make sure that we don't
• 21:35
Speaker 10: let fall by the wayside, and we continue to educate
• 21:38
Speaker 10: and have these conversations uh with our growing children as
• 21:42
Speaker 10: they uh mature and and and understand the tragedy of
• 21:46
Speaker 10: that day. You know, when you look at nine to eleven,
• 21:49
Speaker 10: for me, it's almost like for those kids what they
• 21:52
Speaker 10: would see is D Day. And those are in our
• 21:55
Speaker 10: history books. Those are conversations that we have about those
• 21:59
Speaker 10: tragedies of war. And we need to make sure that
• 22:02
Speaker 10: we're continuing to do that with our children and that
• 22:04
Speaker 10: we never forget. And when I say we, I mean
• 22:07
Speaker 10: generations upon generations of that tragedy of those individuals who
• 22:12
Speaker 10: lost their life due to terrorist attack. And so you know,
• 22:16
Speaker 10: in the words of Charlie Kirk, let's continue to educate,
• 22:19
Speaker 10: Let's continue to talk and have these discussions. Let's not
• 22:24
Speaker 10: let violence fear us from talking, because our democracy falls
• 22:29
Speaker 10: apart when we stop talking with each other. Whether you're
• 22:33
Speaker 10: a Republican, Democrat, liberal, conservative, whatever it is, we as neighbors,
• 22:39
Speaker 10: as humans need to continue to have the conversations, and
• 22:43
Speaker 10: we need to do it in a respectful manner for
• 22:46
  Speaker 10: both parties agree.
• 22:47
Speaker 4: We're talking to Canaan Campy Commissr Lance Wheeler, but Dave
• 22:49

Speaker 4: Let's move on here. You know, we've seems like here
• 23:13
Speaker 4: lately Lands Over the last couple of months, we keep
• 23:16
Speaker 4: getting negative news about the economy in West Virginia. But
• 23:20
Speaker 4: you got some good news about the economy in here
• 23:25
Speaker 4: in Kanawha County, and it has to do with business growth.
• 23:30
Speaker 4: And you shared me yesterday some statistics from the Secretary
• 23:33
  Speaker 4: of State's Office.
• 23:34
Speaker 10: Yeah, so, the Secretary of State's Office, Chris Warner, has
• 23:38
Speaker 10: just released a new results for the month of August
• 23:42
Speaker 10: showing that Kanall County was the largest leading county in
• 23:47
Speaker 10: the state in new business registration. That was one hundred
• 23:50
Speaker 10: and thirty six new businesses were filed through the Secretary
• 23:54
Speaker 10: of State's Office out of Kanall County. And that's not
• 23:57
Speaker 10: just Charleston, that's throughout the entire Kennall County. You know,
• 24:00
Speaker 10: that's important we have these numbers because it shows the
• 24:04
Speaker 10: growth of Kannall County. You know, this is actually larger
• 24:08
Speaker 10: numbers than we're even seeing in the Eastern Panhandle.
• 24:11
  Speaker 6: I think that's a lot.
• 24:12
Speaker 10: To do with the work of our Knall County Commission
• 24:15
Speaker 10: with Commissioned President Ben Slango, Commissioner Tenant, and myself, along
• 24:19
Speaker 10: with our partners with the City Charleston, Amy Goodwin Mayor,
• 24:23
Speaker 10: our Charleston Area Alliance, our Airport, even Hatfill McCoy. You know,
• 24:28
Speaker 10: let's look at some of the programs we've been doing
• 24:30
Speaker 10: within the last two years. You talk about the dirt
• 24:33
Speaker 10: bike trails with McCoy in Tornado, where we have people
• 24:36
Speaker 10: driving in from Canada just to participate here in Kennall
• 24:40
Speaker 10: County in these trails, bringing their hard earned money to
• 24:43
Speaker 10: our mom and pop shops and to our businesses. We
• 24:46
Speaker 10: have the big announcement of the Appalachian Outlaw Trails in
• 24:49
Speaker 10: Eastern Kennall County, Breeze, the Breeze announcement of bringing in
• 24:53
Speaker 10: new direct flights from Las Vegas, New York, Denver Texas.
• 24:59
Speaker 10: These are in credible programs that we are implementing here
• 25:03
Speaker 10: in the county, and I think that is showing interest
• 25:06
Speaker 10: in the business community, whether that's a big manufacturing company
• 25:09
Speaker 10: that will have conversations with of why they would want
• 25:11
Speaker 10: to move to Kennall County, but also our mom and
• 25:14
Speaker 10: pop shops. You know, these one hundred and thirty six registrations, Dave,
• 25:18
Speaker 10: These are dreams, somebody's dream of opening up a new restaurant,
• 25:22
Speaker 10: opening up a boutique shop, maybe a salon, a barbershop,
• 25:25
Speaker 10: whatever it might be. These are people's dreams that they're
• 25:28
Speaker 10: able to invest here in this county. We're continuing to
• 25:32
Speaker 10: grow and I think a lot of part of that
• 25:34
Speaker 10: is our outdoor recreation. I mean the Shawnee Sports complex
• 25:37
Speaker 10: is bringing thousands upon thousands of people from this state
• 25:40
Speaker 10: and out of state, even sometimes out of country every
• 25:44
Speaker 10: single weekend, and that is spurring up business, economic development
• 25:49
Speaker 10: and interest in people saying, you know what, I've always
• 25:51
Speaker 10: thought about owning a little shop for sports equipment. Maybe
• 25:56
Speaker 10: I can do that now. These are the type of
• 25:59
Speaker 10: things that we need to continue to do. Low hanging fruit.
• 26:01
  Speaker 5: Now.
• 26:02
Speaker 10: Don't get me wrong. We have a long way to
• 26:04
Speaker 10: go here in Connell County, but I think we're moving
• 26:06
Speaker 10: the needle in the right direction. We're heading on the
• 26:09
Speaker 10: right path. It's just that we have to keep moving
• 26:11
Speaker 10: forward and progressing, and I think we're going to do
• 26:13
Speaker 10: that with these big announcements coming.
• 26:16
Speaker 4: I want to and this is about the outdoors, but
• 26:18
Speaker 4: it's not necessarily about the adults. It's about the kids.
• 26:21
Speaker 4: And I know you've been a big part of this
• 26:24
Speaker 4: with the continuing upgrades of playgrounds and things of that nature.
• 26:28
Speaker 4: Now and the big picture of things, when you're talking
• 26:30
Speaker 4: about jobs and economic development, that may not seem like
• 26:32
Speaker 4: a lot, doesn't seem like they go together, but it
• 26:35
Speaker 4: actually does. It actually does because you've got to have
• 26:38
Speaker 4: things for the kids, because mommy and daddy are going
• 26:40
Speaker 4: to work till eight to five or whatever. You've got
• 26:42
Speaker 4: to have something, you know, to entertainment. As I said
• 26:44
Speaker 4: on the Midday Show the other day, people don't work
• 26:47
Speaker 4: all the time. Some of us feel like we work
• 26:48
Speaker 4: all the time, but we don't necessarily work all the time.
• 26:51
Speaker 4: You got to have a life outside of work. And
• 26:53
Speaker 4: that's where the upgrades. A lot of these playgrounds, shiny
• 26:56
Speaker 4: sports complex and that's where a lot of this goes
• 26:58
  Speaker 4: hand in hand.
• 26:59
Speaker 10: You know, every time we talked to a large company
• 27:02
Speaker 10: their administration, one of the things they continue to say
• 27:05
Speaker 10: is what is the quality of life in your area?
• 27:08
Speaker 10: And the reason that's important to them is because they
• 27:10
Speaker 10: know if they're going to have workers in that area,
• 27:13
Speaker 10: if people are going to move out of state into
• 27:15
Speaker 10: our county to fulfill that workforce, then they're going to
• 27:19
Speaker 10: need to be able to sell it to them. This
• 27:21
Speaker 10: is where you're going to uproot from where you're currently
• 27:25
Speaker 10: at and bring your family. You know, when an individual
• 27:28
Speaker 10: has that decision that they want to take another job
• 27:30
Speaker 10: out of state, it's not just their decision. It's their spouse,
• 27:34
Speaker 10: it's their children, it's their family. They got to have
• 27:36
Speaker 10: all these conversations and so we need to make sure
• 27:39
Speaker 10: that we have that quality of life, not just for
• 27:41
Speaker 10: business economic development, but for the residents that are currently here.
• 27:45
  Speaker 5: Now.
• 27:45
Speaker 10: You know, when I was a kid growing up out
• 27:47
Speaker 10: of Saint Albans, I didn't have a nice playground to
• 27:49
  Speaker 10: go to. I didn't have a place that I felt
• 27:51
Speaker 10: like I could call home. And this is one of
• 27:53
Speaker 10: the things that drive me for this, And so we're
• 27:55
Speaker 10: excited that we've been putting on this new incentive of
• 27:58
Speaker 10: outdoor recreation for the children, for the families here in
• 28:02
Speaker 10: Connall County. We just recently over the summer finished the
• 28:06
Speaker 10: brand new playgrounds date of the art over at meadow Wood,
• 28:09
Speaker 10: and we're proud to announce that we've done the same
• 28:11
Speaker 10: thing at Coonskin. You know, if you haven't been there yet,
• 28:15
Speaker 10: you should go. We are not finished yet. We're putting
• 28:18
Speaker 10: all the small little details. We're going to be having
• 28:21
Speaker 10: the ribbon cutting on Thursday next week the eighteenth, at
• 28:25
Speaker 10: five o'clock. We invite everyone to come, but we already
• 28:28
Speaker 10: have people coming right now because the playground's finished. We're
• 28:31
Speaker 10: just putting up the finished touches with more benches or
• 28:34
Speaker 10: trash cans, and so I recently went with my daughters
• 28:39
Speaker 10: to show them the brand new playground because we went
• 28:41
Speaker 10: to the old one, which was dilapidated. It was rusted,
• 28:44
Speaker 10: I mean, it was a safety heizard and somebody was
• 28:47
Speaker 10: going to get hurt, and so we brought them to
• 28:49
Speaker 10: this new one. And when I got there, I didn't
• 28:52
Speaker 10: know how many people were going to be there. Dave,
• 28:55
Speaker 10: there's thirty to forty people with their children all across
• 28:58
Speaker 10: this county, some from Saint Albans, some from Cisonville, right
• 29:02
Speaker 10: in Coonskin, enjoying this beautiful, brand new playground. And the
• 29:07
Speaker 10: eyes on these kids lighting up, the laughters filling up
• 29:11
Speaker 10: throughout the space, it was heartwarming.
• 29:14
Speaker 4: The putting down of the phones, the absolutely absolutely.
• 29:18
  Speaker 10: I didn't see one kid with an iPad. I didn't
• 29:20
Speaker 10: see one kid with the phone. I saw kids running around,
• 29:23
Speaker 10: playing tag, jumping up and down. And was that something
• 29:27
Speaker 10: that was beautiful in my eyes to see in our
• 29:29
Speaker 10: community as somebody who grew up here in Kannall County
• 29:32
Speaker 10: never had that, and getting to see that, to be
• 29:34
Speaker 10: done with the generations before me, including my children, that
• 29:39
Speaker 10: was just heartwarming. So we're going to invite everyone to
• 29:41
Speaker 10: come on out into our new playground next Thursday the eighteenth,
• 29:47
Speaker 10: and just enjoy at five o'clock a ribbon cutting of
• 29:50
Speaker 10: community coming together and just being proud of what we have.
• 29:54
Speaker 10: That was really my key point. I want everyone to
• 29:57
Speaker 10: be proud of what we have here in Kannall County.
• 30:00
Speaker 10: He's been putting to work in in the County Commission.
• 30:02
Speaker 10: I think people are going to be very excited. They
• 30:04
Speaker 10: haven't seen it yet, this brand new playground. And we're
• 30:07
Speaker 10: not done yet. We're going to be going to Pioneer
• 30:09
Speaker 10: Park over in eastern Kennell County and we're going to
• 30:11
Speaker 10: finish up the last playground, brand new, state of the
• 30:14
Speaker 10: art for the end of the year, and we're excited.
• 30:17
Speaker 10: Later in the fall, we'll be having a ribbon cutting
• 30:19
Speaker 10: for that one as well.
• 30:20
Speaker 4: All right, before we let you go, I don't want
• 30:22
Speaker 4: to ask you. The announcement was made last week about
• 30:24
Speaker 4: the Ascend program. This of course the brainchild of Brad
• 30:29
Speaker 4: an Elise Smith of Marshall University and a big ribbon
• 30:32
Speaker 4: cutting or not ribbon cutting'm so you got me think
• 30:34
Speaker 4: about ribbon cuttings now a big The announcement of that
• 30:37
Speaker 4: was made with the County Commission and with Charleston Mary
• 30:39
Speaker 4: Alliance when mayor a Goodwin's office, and several others as well.
• 30:43
Speaker 10: Your take on that, You know, we talk about the
• 30:46
Speaker 10: ASCEND program, and what I see out of the ASSND program,
• 30:49
Speaker 10: which if your viewers don't know, is a program that
• 30:52
Speaker 10: will incentivize you to choose to move to West Virginia
• 30:56
Speaker 10: if you have a remote working job. And what we
• 30:59
Speaker 10: have looked at is how can we get native West
• 31:01
Speaker 10: Virginians who unfortunately had to make that choice to move
• 31:05
Speaker 10: out of state, to come home. And I think that
• 31:07
Speaker 10: those are the conversations that we're having is targeting those
• 31:10
Speaker 10: who are West Virginians at heart, who their families are here,
• 31:14
Speaker 10: their love is for the mountains and they want to
• 31:17
Speaker 10: come home, but financially or family wise, they haven't been
• 31:20
Speaker 10: able to make that decision. Giving them that incentive through
• 31:23
Speaker 10: the ASSIN program to come here, come home, be with
• 31:26
Speaker 10: your family, and for always and forever be a mountaineer.
• 31:31
Speaker 10: That's what's important to me with this program, and this
• 31:34
Speaker 10: is why everything we're talking about with outdoor recreation playgrounds
• 31:39
Speaker 10: quality of life is important because when you have that
• 31:41
Speaker 10: conversation with someone and say hey, come home, things have
• 31:44
Speaker 10: changed and once they get to see that, and then
• 31:47
Speaker 10: they're incentivid to do so that's when you're going to
• 31:50
Speaker 10: start seeing West Virginians come home and Dave, that was
• 31:53
Speaker 10: the ultimate plan all along for all of us.
• 31:55
Speaker 4: All right, I want to switch gears real quick. I
• 31:57
Speaker 4: only to get about a minute or so left in
• 31:59
Speaker 4: the segment, but before so, I'm going to have you
• 32:00
Speaker 4: take off your county commissioner hat for a moment. Last
• 32:03
Speaker 4: time you were here, you made an announcement that you
• 32:06
Speaker 4: were going to be seeking the office of state Senate.
• 32:08
Speaker 4: You want to talk about how that's going so far.
• 32:09
Speaker 4: I know it's early, you'll talk about that a little bit.
• 32:11
Speaker 4: You know, it's going really well.
• 32:12
Speaker 10: We're working right now, just getting the initial support and
• 32:15
Speaker 10: been talking to voters, not just in Kannall County, and
• 32:17
Speaker 10: been going to Ronan County, Jackson County, Putnam County. And
• 32:21
Speaker 10: you know what I really have noticed is that my
• 32:23
Speaker 10: leadership and skills of getting things done, whether that's outdoor
• 32:27
Speaker 10: recreation like new playgrounds, looking at our essential services like
• 32:30
Speaker 10: our ambulance authority, our police officers or firefighters, making sure
• 32:34
Speaker 10: the funding's there, that leadership has shown and people know
• 32:38
Speaker 10: that I mean business when it comes to protecting our
• 32:41
Speaker 10: first responders and listening to the voters and the people
• 32:46
Speaker 10: in local government because that's where the most can be done.
• 32:49
Speaker 10: That's going to be my campaign. I'm going to be
• 32:51
Speaker 10: working with local leaders and asking how can the state
• 32:54
Speaker 10: help you so we can work together to maximize the
• 32:58
Speaker 10: greatest benefit for everyone here in the state of West Virginia.
• 33:02
Speaker 10: I'm very proud of the support. Initially, I've been beginning
• 33:05
Speaker 10: and we're going to be hitting the ground hard and
• 33:08
Speaker 10: here soon. I want to start knocking doors, so you
• 33:10

• 39:22
Speaker 4: the FBI was was doing a briefing. They do say
• 39:26
Speaker 4: that a weapon has been recovered and also there are speculation.
• 39:31
Speaker 4: See originally they thought they had taken the shooter into custoding.
• 39:34
Speaker 4: Turns out that was not the case. The shooter is
• 39:36
Speaker 4: still at large, but they are now The FBI in
• 39:39
Speaker 4: Utah is now releasing information saying that they believe the
• 39:42
Speaker 4: shooter is a college age person. It doesn't necessarily mean
• 39:46
Speaker 4: they were a student at that particular college, a college
• 39:50
Speaker 4: age person, meaning you know, eighteen twenty three, twenty four.
• 39:54
Speaker 4: That's all they are saying at this time, which is,
• 39:57
Speaker 4: you know, completely understandable. I got a couple of texts
• 40:00
Speaker 4: I want to knock out here, and I will say, well,
• 40:05
Speaker 4: I'm gonna I tell you what. I'm gonna read the

Speaker 4: text and I'm gonna give you some of my own thoughts.
• 40:09
  Speaker 5: How's that?
• 40:10
Speaker 4: Texas, No one knows the motivation of the gunman. All
• 40:13
Speaker 4: the speculation is to drum up political support and anger.
• 40:16
Speaker 4: For all we know the shooter was a disgruntled Charlie
• 40:19
Speaker 4: Kirk fan or a disgruntled Trump lover who let TDS
• 40:22
Speaker 4: get the best of them. You're seeing who was sowing
• 40:25
Speaker 4: the political anger division with speculation. Remember when the Minnesota
• 40:29
Speaker 4: lawmaker and her family were assassinated by a right wing extremist.
• 40:33
Speaker 4: I remember silence from the Republicans and from Trump. Texas
• 40:39
Speaker 4: conservatives are shaken to the bone because he was one
• 40:42
Speaker 4: of theirs. The Democratic lawmakers in Minnesota not shaken. Going

• 41:03

• 41:08
Speaker 4: All we've heard from Democrats for years is the we
• 41:11
Speaker 4: need to have the conversation about this or that. That
• 41:15
Speaker 4: is all Charlie did when he visited college campuses, talked

Speaker 4: you don't know can't hurt you. Texays, the Minnesota assassination
• 47:20
Speaker 4: is no less shocking than the Charlie Kirk assassination, although
• 47:24
Speaker 4: I think the differences in reaction are valid. The victim
• 47:27
Speaker 4: of Minnesota was not known nationally. Charlie Kirk is exceptionally
• 47:30
Speaker 4: famous in the US, so the reaction will be bigger.
• 47:32
Speaker 4: Both cases are tragic for humanity. Tech says Dave. Charlie
• 47:37
Speaker 4: was a Christian and a Conservative, and the Democrats would
• 47:40
Speaker 4: show they hates those two characteristics a sad day. Charlie
• 47:43

Speaker 4: Tex says, with the current state of society in our nation,

Speaker 4: it heard submit this, but it must be said, and
• 47:53
Speaker 4: insanely evil, as insanely evil as some people in our
• 47:57
Speaker 4: country have become. A September eleventh hap today, there would
• 48:00
Speaker 4: be no September twelfth the interity tomorrow. I've said that

Speaker 4: many many times before, and appreciate the text, Texas, David,

• 48:54
Speaker 4: Morgan and Morgan America's largest injury law firm. And again
• 49:00
Speaker 4: we've talked about the situation with Charlie Kirk, you know,
• 49:07
Speaker 4: throughout the throughout the show. You know, as I said,
• 49:14
Speaker 4: as of now, the shooter remains at large. They believe
• 49:16
Speaker 4: it was a college age person. That's all the Center's point,
• 49:20
Speaker 4: and a weapon was discovered. We obviously know, and I'm
• 49:24
Speaker 4: no expert on these sort of things, but with somebody
• 49:26
Speaker 4: that knew what they were doing because it was done
• 49:29
Speaker 4: for one hundred two hundred yards away and the shop
• 49:32
Speaker 4: was perfect. So this is not some you know, kid
• 49:34
Speaker 4: with his father's rifle. I mean somebody that really knew
• 49:37
Speaker 4: what they were doing. President Trump has referenced earlier said
• 49:39
Speaker 4: that the radical left rhetoric led to Kirk's death and
• 49:42
Speaker 4: called him a martyr and the truth for truth and freedom.
• 49:45
Speaker 4: Vice President Jady Vance on his way to Utah today
• 49:48
Speaker 4: thirty one years old. Was Kirk about to turn thirty
• 49:50
Speaker 4: two in a couple of weeks. Father, husband, known for
• 49:52
Speaker 4: doing debates, not really means spirited debates, at least as
• 49:55
Speaker 4: far as I can tell. He did like dialogue and
• 49:58
Speaker 4: was in fact talking about gun violence and trans issues
• 50:00
Speaker 4: when he was killed. He was the founder and CEO
• 50:03
Speaker 4: of Turning Point USA, which is a conservative youth group
• 50:06
Speaker 4: active on more than thirty five hundred college campuses across
• 50:10
Speaker 4: the country. Also a popular podcaster, and you've heard me
• 50:14
Speaker 4: talk about this earlier in the show. The immediate rush
• 50:16
Speaker 4: to judgment and to social media media about what caused this.
• 50:20
Speaker 4: You know how many it was your feed last night
• 50:22
Speaker 4: like mine. The left will stop at nothing. And the
• 50:26
Speaker 4: truth is, as of right now, we don't know anything
• 50:29
Speaker 4: about the shooter other than what I just told you.
• 50:32
Speaker 4: We don't know as political his or her political registration
• 50:35
Speaker 4: or affiliation, and quite frankly, in my eyes, none of
• 50:38
Speaker 4: it matters. I have no answers none. But when a
• 50:43
Speaker 4: similar situation happened at the Catholic school referenced earlier in
• 50:46
Speaker 4: Minnesota a couple of weeks ago, it was the same thing.
• 50:51
Speaker 4: It was the same rush to judgment by everybody and
• 50:53
Speaker 4: that person, if you recall, to check all the boxes
• 50:57
Speaker 4: of everything. And last night, at least at one point
• 51:00
Speaker 4: I had to turn off social media and look for
• 51:03
Speaker 4: you know, cat videos or Andy Griffith rerun or something.
• 51:05
  Speaker 4: I took a walk and I posted a picture of
• 51:08
Speaker 4: a pretty Taze Valley sunset last night. We've got to
• 51:12
Speaker 4: just stop with all of this. And I think sometimes
• 51:15
  Speaker 4: as a society, I think we're doomed. We're so tribal,
• 51:20
Speaker 4: we're so dug in, and we're all going we not
• 51:25
Speaker 4: so much me, but others are. We got to find
• 51:27
Speaker 4: out who this is so we can use it for
• 51:29
Speaker 4: ammunition for the other side. That's what a lot of
• 51:33
Speaker 4: this goes back to. And a lot of what you
• 51:35
Speaker 4: saw on social media last night's people that couldn't give
• 51:37
Speaker 4: a damn one way or the other. All they really
• 51:39
Speaker 4: care about is aha, can I use this at the
• 51:44
Speaker 4: other side. And it's a sad, sad state of affairs.
• 51:48
Speaker 4: And I've said it before and the texture was absolutely right.
• 51:51
Speaker 4: Of September eleventh happened today, there would be no September
• 51:55
Speaker 4: twelfth like we saw it, no unity, none whatsoever. TJ
• 52:01
Speaker 4: is here ran over you good.
• 52:03
  Speaker 18: I'm good, buddy, I'm good. It's a sad day in
• 52:06
Speaker 18: America for a number of reasons. Yeah, yeah, we remember
• 52:11
Speaker 18: nine to eleven. Of course what happened yesterday, that Colorado
• 52:14
  Speaker 18: school shooting.
• 52:15
Speaker 4: Which kind of got buried. Don't mean for like you
• 52:17
Speaker 4: know in all this. So you agree with me what
• 52:20
Speaker 4: I said there ten You don't have to. We can
• 52:22
Speaker 4: debate if you want, but we only got twenty seconds
• 52:23
  Speaker 4: to do it.
• 52:26
  Speaker 18: I can't do it in twenty seconds. Here's all I
• 52:28
Speaker 18: would say, Right, do me a favor. Yeah, tell someone
• 52:31
Speaker 18: you disagree with today, Tell them you appreciate them.
• 52:34
Speaker 4: Tell you value them. Try to keep a dialogue going
• 52:37
Speaker 4: good enough, Just try that, you guys will keep the
• 52:39
Speaker 4: dialogue going on talk line. I'll be back later today
