Transcript
- 0:15Hi. Welcome to the Club Bookies
- 0:19favorite book club. We discuss literary shortlists
- 0:22and award-winning novels. This episode we're discussing
- 0:25the Booker Prize winner announcement, with Flesh by
- 0:28David Salloy having won the award.
- 0:31We've already discussed this book in depth in an earlier
- 0:33episode when we were reading the six shortlisted books.
- 0:36That episode is linked below, or just scroll past through our
- 0:39previous episodes to find it. Let's start by sharing our
- 0:42initial reactions to the winner. I'm I'm Aaron and I am boarding
- 0:49a flight to Hungary. I very nearly recorded this
- 0:52episode from Hungary. I was looking at flights and I
- 0:57found a very cheap 1 so I very nearly went to Hungary just to
- 1:03record this episode and no. We didn't.
- 1:06I don't believe this. I wanted to surprise all of you
- 1:08guys by being like surprised. I'm in Hungary, I predicted
- 1:11this, and I'm the only out of all of us that has so far
- 1:17managed to predict a winner out of the two shortlists that we
- 1:21have read through. Upon my reread, it's actually
- 1:24more of a three than a four for me that.
- 1:29Was a shock that was, that would be more, that was more of a
- 1:31shock to me than if you'd have shown up in Hungary.
- 1:33I think it's the best out of what we had, but I I don't think
- 1:39it is particularly great to begin with.
- 1:42I'm Lucy. I'm in a hot tub, far away from
- 1:45everyone else, looking the other way.
- 1:47I was really, I felt a little bit math about it.
- 1:49Winning better than some, worse than others, middle of the pack.
- 1:54I don't think it's going to be remembered as like a great
- 1:57Booker winner, like Booker Prize winner.
- 1:59When I think about now, there's a lot of Booker Prize winners
- 2:01that I don't think are great, but like when I think of like
- 2:03the really good ones and I would struggle to be like, this is a
- 2:07great 1. So I just felt I was sad for
- 2:09audition, obviously, because that was my outright favorite
- 2:13and by quite a bit. So there were tears, there was
- 2:16anger. There was just all the stages of
- 2:17grief that I went through that night.
- 2:19The worst part of it being that Aaron was right.
- 2:23I felt that very acutely and I am that petty.
- 2:26It did annoy me that Aaron won be very annoyed.
- 2:30Hi, I'm Hannah and I'm currently smoking a celebratory
- 2:35cigarettes. Hypothetically.
- 2:38I'm actually so buzzing that David one.
- 2:41When I first initially read Flesh, it was one of the ones I
- 2:45enjoyed and the reread made me like it even more.
- 2:50And this idea that like a singular event kit has an impact
- 2:54on your life and like what's to come.
- 2:57I really like that. I mean, in my heart of hearts, I
- 3:00really wanted Audition to win because for me, that book made
- 3:05me sit and think for a bit. And in the end, I really think
- 3:08Audition actually give it a four.
- 3:10This book is solid. I still really like it, but I'm
- 3:13happy because if the rest of our lives would have won, I would
- 3:16have thrown an actual fit and quit book clubs.
- 3:18For life, right? Can I just chime in there?
- 3:21How do I do really see? If the rest of our lives had
- 3:24won, I would never have watched Sex in the City again.
- 3:29So be like. Jessica Parker died.
- 3:32Yeah, she already let me die by putting it in the shortlist, so
- 3:34she would have. There have been words.
- 3:36There have been words. Hi, I'm Colin, and I'm ritually
- 3:39burning all the Booker shortlist books in a giant pyre.
- 3:43Writing for me right now. And to cleanse.
- 3:46To cleanse the literary scene of all this bad juju.
- 3:49No, But yeah, this book winning, I think very middling to me.
- 3:54I like the book enough. Like it wasn't bad, it wasn't
- 3:57great. I think the entire shortness
- 3:59really was kind of middling. So I wasn't really excited for
- 4:03our our against it. It could have been any book and
- 4:05I think I would have still felt the exact same way.
- 4:07Bob the Booker has also shared his reaction with us.
- 4:11Hello, I'm Bob from Bob the Booker, and we've just had the
- 4:15winner announcement that Flesh by David Zeloy has won and I am
- 4:19delighted in a very rare turn of events.
- 4:22It's one of the books I loved from the beginning and hoped and
- 4:27thought might might do well. I am really, really pleased that
- 4:31this book won. I think it is I, I, I see why
- 4:34it's divisive. I see why a fair few people
- 4:35don't like it, but at the same time I think it is so good at
- 4:40investigating the masculinity and vulnerability and the ways
- 4:44that we hide truths from ourselves, all done through a
- 4:48narrator who is so uncomfortable with the idea of sharing a story
- 4:53with you. And I just found it such a
- 4:55unique reading experience for the way that you are always held
- 4:58at arm's length and the narrator will open a chapter and you
- 5:02realise that years have passed and he doesn't want to bring you
- 5:05up to speed on anything in his life.
- 5:07And I just think it's such a novel way of telling a story and
- 5:11and also just incredibly inventive and fun.
- 5:14And I think there's a real confidence in the way that he's
- 5:16able to keep that tone and keep that style of talking fresh for
- 5:21200 odd pages. And for it to really just drive
- 5:25home the narrative. I think for me, something that's
- 5:27so special is where form and function meet and hear that the
- 5:31way the novel is structured helps tell the story.
- 5:35And in some ways the story could only really be told through that
- 5:37method. And I think that's what's so
- 5:39fabulous about it. So yeah, really, really happy
- 5:41for this win. I agree, Bob.
- 5:43I know no one else really does, but I agree.
- 5:46I mean, I'm happy. I'm happy Bob is is happy, you
- 5:49know? I like the idea he like, he said
- 5:52of someone uncomfortable. What is it like telling his
- 5:55story? That's quite I like.
- 5:56That idea, it is uncomfortable. I I find he is uncomfortable
- 6:00with the idea of being like a storyteller Estevan.
- 6:04But I, I kind of I'm like, I do agree with him.
- 6:06I think it's a really novel way of telling it, and it's kind of
- 6:09interesting, but it's like, see in the center and the end, It's
- 6:13like so melodramatic. It is really punchy in places,
- 6:16but I think it's quite pulpy in other places.
- 6:20And that's why I think I'm like, I definitely think it could have
- 6:22been executed better, but there were parts of it that were
- 6:25really, really good. And I like what he was trying to
- 6:27do at least. Anything anyone wants to add
- 6:30upon reflection? I have just completed Second
- 6:35Lesson through to the Audiobook of Flesh since it was announced
- 6:39as the winner. Even though I said that it's
- 6:42probably lowered in terms of how I would rate it out of five.
- 6:47As I said, I still think it is the best of what we got.
- 6:51And there were several points that that came to me upon my
- 6:56reread. So yeah, I I basically noticed
- 6:59that some of the trends were that there's love interests and
- 7:02nearly every chapter, at least at the start and at the end, we
- 7:05get a new love interest introduced in in every chapter.
- 7:09And, and there is a trend where all of these women seem to
- 7:13reject him for another man, for someone else, whether it's a
- 7:19partner that they already have. Actually, that seems to be the
- 7:22trend. It is a partner that they
- 7:25already have before Ishfan has, has got involved.
- 7:30There also seems to be a strange trend of deaths where nearly
- 7:34every chapter, or at least most of them, seem to feature a death
- 7:40of some kind or reacting and and getting over the death of of
- 7:46someone. And then we see him in multiple
- 7:50different jobs and occupations. And I think that is one of the
- 7:54things that helps us see him grow the most because he is
- 7:57progressing through such a vast range of different jobs.
- 8:05And then just another trend that I had noticed was the injuries
- 8:09there. There seems to be a lot of
- 8:10health things that come up throughout nearly every single
- 8:13chapter. And whether it's in the actual
- 8:16injury that's been obtained or an illness that is happening or
- 8:20COVID happening in the background.
- 8:23I thought that all of those were interesting trends.
- 8:26But one of the most interesting things that I did realize, at
- 8:30least I think I've connected these dots, is the woman that he
- 8:35gets with at the end in Hungary when he's returned, I believe is
- 8:43the same woman from the start. The Who, the 15 year old girl
- 8:47when he's 15, the girl that rejects him.
- 8:51I think that that's the same person because the apartments
- 8:55are described as being very similar.
- 8:57And she mentions that she wishes that she had that Ishwan had
- 9:02seen her her body 30 years previous, which would have
- 9:07placed her about it would have placed them around when they
- 9:12were 15 years old. And she also mentions that she
- 9:17had a child when she was 15. And we know that that girl was
- 9:21sexually active at 15 years old the only.
- 9:24Bit of evidence you have is a 15 year old is sexually active.
- 9:29A lot of them probably are. Yeah, no, but.
- 9:32And also it does does not mean that she's pregnant.
- 9:36No, I OK, I know, I know. It's.
- 9:39Very. I know that I'm jumping to
- 9:41conclusions here, but I think it's one of those things where
- 9:46the author has like connected us back to the start.
- 9:50And especially because the bar that he meets her in the bar
- 9:55that she works in, I'm we're very confident is the same bar
- 9:59that he attends in the 1st chapter with the neighbor, the
- 10:06neighbor's husband. So I'm pretty sure that the
- 10:09author that David Salloy has set it up that we remembered the
- 10:13bar. And we think, hang on a second.
- 10:15This sounds very similar to where he was at the start of
- 10:18this book. And then we're introduced to the
- 10:20woman and I think again that we are supposed to connect the dots
- 10:26and think this is the person from when he was 15 years old.
- 10:31Just to play devil's advocate with you Aaron, a lot of the
- 10:35time in, in any city or country, a lot of the buildings will look
- 10:41similar. Now, speaking as people from
- 10:44Ireland, we know that a lot of our pubs are actually quite
- 10:48indistinguishable from each other when you go in.
- 10:51Also a lot of apartment buildings I'm imagining in
- 10:55Eastern Europe are very similar. So just, I know your theories,
- 11:00probably I'm going to say 90% accurate, but I'm just saying
- 11:04that there's a bit of a niggle there.
- 11:06There's a bit of a, maybe it's not right.
- 11:09No, of course, of course. What do you say about rebuttal,
- 11:12Aaron? You know, I'm I'm not at all
- 11:14claiming that this is fact. I'm just drawing connections
- 11:17here where there might not be any.
- 11:20And I think it's an interesting thing that David Soy has set up.
- 11:25If that's the case. Even the fact that I feel like
- 11:29there's allusions to chapter one in the final chapter.
- 11:35I, I, I'm giving him credit that he's left it up to those readers
- 11:41that are going to go in depth and are going to, and bear the
- 11:47previous information in, in mind when completing the book.
- 11:51And so it's my head cannon. I don't know if it's true or
- 11:55not, but I just wanted to share my theory with with everyone.
- 11:59I love it. It's it's in there with
- 12:01actually, you know what, it's a lot more concrete than a lot of
- 12:04your other series. Now let's tell you what we have
- 12:07coming up. Now that the Booker Prize has
- 12:09wrapped up, we'll be diving into more shortlists and
- 12:12award-winning novels in the future to tell us what you want
- 12:16us to read. We want you to pitch us ideas
- 12:19for the book club. Prior to the shortlist, Aaron
- 12:22and I had been breaking down the novel Eden Shore by Oshing
- 12:25Fagan, chapter by chapter. We'll wrap that up with only a
- 12:28couple of chapters remaining, and we'll be speaking to the
- 12:31writer Oshing on this podcast once we've done so.
- 12:35Also, Aaron met Oshing just a few days ago.
- 12:38So, Aaron, would you like to tell us a tale?
- 12:40I I did meet Oshing. Oshing is a very nice man and
- 12:45he, yeah, talked about the podcast.
- 12:49He actually, I walked off to him and he said, are you Aaron?
- 12:54So he's, he's definitely. Starstruck.
- 12:56He was starstruck. I think he was like because I
- 12:59need my lawyer to get this responding.
- 13:01Yeah, subpoena. Here's a subpoena.
- 13:03Can you? He's like, is that one quarter
- 13:07of bookies favorite The flesh? It's not too late to join in on
- 13:12that. Read through.
- 13:14Clearly there are lots to unpack and send us your questions for
- 13:17the author, our good friend Austin.
- 13:20Following that, we'll have our own award show.
- 13:22Keep an eye on our podcast feed and social media for that and
- 13:25you guys, the listeners, you'll get to vote in each category.
