- 0:00Speaker 1: In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread,
- 0:03Speaker 1: until ye return into the ground. For out of it
- 0:06Speaker 1: wast thou taken. For dust thou art, and unto dust
- 0:11Speaker 1: shalt thou return. Genesis 3.19 Dear Father, because of Adam's disobedience,
- 0:19Speaker 1: I was born into this sinful inheritance. Until you sent
- 0:23Speaker 1: your Son Jesus, who made a way through his obedience
- 0:27Speaker 1: unto death, that broke the curse. I am now adopted
- 0:32Speaker 1: into your eternal family by accepting his atonement for my sins.
- 0:37Speaker 1: You fashioned Adam's physical body out of the dust of
- 0:40Speaker 1: the earth and breathed your life into him, and he
- 0:44Speaker 1: became a living being with an eternal soul. When he sinned,
- 0:50Speaker 1: he broke that eternal connection and returned to the dust
- 0:54Speaker 1: of the earth in which you took him from. I
- 0:58Speaker 1: am doomed to provide for my family and myself through
- 1:01Speaker 1: the work of my hands. The stress of my labor
- 1:05Speaker 1: wears out this human body, but my eternal soul has
- 1:10Speaker 1: been restored through forgiveness of my sins and faith in
- 1:14Speaker 1: the work of Christ on the cross. My human condition
- 1:19Speaker 1: will perish, and my body will return to the earth,
- 1:23Speaker 1: but my soul shall rise to be with you forever.
- 1:27Speaker 1: in heaven. Thank you, Heavenly Father, for restoring my soul
- 1:33Speaker 1: and redeeming me from Adam's sin. Nothing I sacrifice for
- 1:38Speaker 1: you will ever repay the life you sacrificed for me.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Nothing is impossible for you, and you outsmarted the one
- 1:47Speaker 1: who thought he defeated you when he crucified you on
- 1:50Speaker 1: the cross. Glory to the risen Lord. In Jesus' name, Amen.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Cain and Abel Before this story, we learned about the
- 2:02Speaker 1: fall of mankind.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Adam and Eve lived with God, shameless and without sin.
- 2:33Speaker 2: But because of their pride and desire to be their
- 2:35Speaker 2: own gods, they were deceived and turned away from him.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Now they live in exile, still with God, but no
- 2:43Speaker 2: longer in an intimate relationship with him. Now we will
- 2:47Speaker 2: learn about how Adam and Eve start their family outside
- 2:51Speaker 2: of paradise. They have their own children, but the sinful
- 2:54Speaker 2: nature of Adam and Eve has now been given to
- 2:57Speaker 2: their children, And what comes next is a tragedy that
- 3:01Speaker 2: has been repeated for all of human history. Inspired by
- 3:05Speaker 2: the book of Genesis.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Jack Graham with today's episode of the Bible

- 3:40Speaker 3: slash stress. Today we pick up with Adam and Eve
- 3:44Speaker 3: outside the garden. This is life after the curse. If
- 3:49Speaker 3: yesterday's story was about doubt and pride, Today's theme is
- 3:54Speaker 3: insincere worship of God, anger, bitterness, and the passing down
- 3:59Speaker 3: of sin nature to all future generations after Adam. Adam
- 4:04Speaker 3: and Eve start a family. They have two sons, Cain
- 4:07Speaker 3: and Abel, names that have become infamous for the devastating
- 4:11Speaker 3: effects of sibling rivalry. Cain and his brother Abel grew
- 4:16Speaker 3: up knowing God. They were taught the importance of sacrifices.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Abel chose the best to offer to God while Cain
- 4:23Speaker 3: brought offerings from a sense of obligation rather than gratitude
- 4:27Speaker 3: and praise. So God accepts one and rejects the other.
- 4:32Speaker 3: Cain was angry, bitter, and sin took hold of his heart.
- 4:37Speaker 3: The tragedy that ensued once again created an irreparable rift
- 4:42Speaker 3: in the family. The first human blood that was shed
- 4:45Speaker 3: on God's once perfect earth came from the hands of
- 4:48Speaker 3: one brother upon another. Sin was now spreading through generations,
- 4:53Speaker 3: and the cost was high. Murder, banishment, another curse, and
- 4:58Speaker 3: yet in the midst of it all, God's grace and
- 5:01Speaker 3: mercy once again shining through. Let's listen now to the
- 5:05Speaker 3: telling of this story from Genesis 4, the story of
- 5:09Speaker 3: Cain and Abel.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Adam and Eve had been banished from Eden, and their
- 5:16Speaker 2: sin had made life hard, but the steadfast love of
- 5:19Speaker 2: God had not left them. Adam and Eve knew each
- 5:23Speaker 2: other intimately and became pregnant. First came Cain. Afterward came Abel.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Cain labored in the fields, growing food for the family.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Abel tended to the livestock as a shepherd. Cain and
- 5:37Speaker 2: Abel are the first of us to grow up in
- 5:39Speaker 2: a world riddled with imperfection, sin, and distance from God.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Both children grew up in the new world, and it
- 5:48Speaker 2: was time for Cain and Abel to bring sacrifices to God.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Cain brought some of the fruits of his labor, grains, vegetables,
- 5:56Speaker 2: and other vegetation. Abel brought the firstborn of his flock,
- 6:01Speaker 2: a lamb. Abel brought the best of what he had.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Not only this, but Abel had to raise this little
- 6:08Speaker 2: sheep and kill it before God. This means that it
- 6:12Speaker 2: was not just a sacrifice of materials, but a sacrifice
- 6:16Speaker 2: of the heart. Because of this, God accepted Abel's offerings.
- 6:21Speaker 2: God also rejected Cain's offering, knowing that it did not
- 6:25Speaker 2: come from any real love at all. Jealousy gripped Cain's heart.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Contempt towards God boiled up inside him. This is mankind's
- 6:35Speaker 2: first rumblings of true hatred. Cain's face gave away his
- 6:40Speaker 2: true feelings. God noticed this and asked, Why are you
- 6:44Speaker 2: so angry? Knowing full well what the issue was, If
- 6:49Speaker 2: you do well, will you not be accepted?
- 6:52Speaker 3: God asked.
- 6:53Speaker 2: If you don't do well, you give more room for
- 6:56Speaker 2: hatred and sin to rule in your heart. Do not
- 6:59Speaker 2: let hate.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Rule over you.
- 7:01Speaker 2: You can overcome it. But Cain didn't listen. His anger
- 7:06Speaker 2: had already won him over. There would be no stopping
- 7:10Speaker 2: the sin he was about to commit. Cain lured his
- 7:14Speaker 2: brother into the fields.
- 7:15Speaker 4: Then, at that moment, all the hatred.
- 7:18Speaker 5: Jealousy and contempt of Cain unleashed onto his brother. Blow
- 7:24Speaker 5: after blow, Cain unleashed his wrath and spited God.
- 7:28Speaker 4: By murdering his brother. His hands stained red, dripping with
- 7:34Speaker 4: the blood of his brother. God, already knowing what Cain
- 7:39Speaker 4: had done, asked him, Cain, where is your brother? Cain replied,
- 7:45Speaker 4: I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?
- 7:49Speaker 2: God is the creator of life, and Cain had taken
- 7:53Speaker 2: an innocent one. This enraged God. He cursed Cain, saying,
- 7:58Speaker 2: What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood
- 8:01Speaker 2: is crying to me from the ground, and now you
- 8:04Speaker 2: are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth
- 8:07Speaker 2: to receive your brother's blood from your hand. When you
- 8:11Speaker 2: work the ground, it shall no longer yield to you
- 8:14Speaker 2: its strength. You shall be a fugitive.
- 8:17Speaker 4: And a wanderer on the earth.
- 8:20Speaker 2: This punishment was fitting. Because Cain had taken a life,
- 8:24Speaker 2: God wanted his life to be burdensome. It was more
- 8:28Speaker 2: than Cain could bear. Fortunately for him, God's mercy is
- 8:32Speaker 2: still present in punishment. God said, If anyone kills you,
- 8:38Speaker 2: vengeance shall be taken on them sevenfold. And he put
- 8:42Speaker 2: a mark on Cain to keep anyone from doing to
- 8:45Speaker 2: him what he did to his brother. Cain had shed
- 8:49Speaker 2: innocent blood, and this was a pattern mankind would continue
- 8:53Speaker 2: in for a thousand generations after. Yet God continues to
- 8:58Speaker 2: show mercy, waiting to bless them and save them from
- 9:02Speaker 2: their evil.
- 9:05Speaker 3: When jealousy and anger take root, they fester and grow.
- 9:10Speaker 3: That's what we see happening in today's story. Abel, who
- 9:13Speaker 3: really only plays a brief role, is lifted up as
- 9:17Speaker 3: the example of God honoring sacrifices and offerings. He gave
- 9:21Speaker 3: God the first and the best, and God accepted that sacrifice. Cain,
- 9:26Speaker 3: whose heart was not in the right place, full of
- 9:28Speaker 3: faith to begin with, brought God vegetables and grains, but
- 9:32Speaker 3: not his first fruits, not his best, and not in faith.
- 9:36Speaker 3: His motives were wrong, and he became angry when his
- 9:39Speaker 3: offering was rejected. Sin started to creep in through resentment
- 9:44Speaker 3: and anger. So God warned him of the danger of
- 9:47Speaker 3: letting sin in. He speaks to Cain in Genesis 4,
- 9:51Speaker 3: verses 7 and 8, saying, If you do well, will
- 9:55Speaker 3: your face not be cheerful? And if you do not
- 9:58Speaker 3: do well, sin is lurking at the door, and its
- 10:02Speaker 3: desire is for you, but you must master it. I
- 10:06Speaker 3: appreciate this passage providing a warning that's applicable to you
- 10:10Speaker 3: and me today. Sin is now loose in the world.
- 10:14Speaker 3: It lurks at our door. It desires us. In other words,
- 10:18Speaker 3: it wants to get in our heads and in our hearts,
- 10:21Speaker 3: into our lives. When sin is allowed to rule over us,
- 10:24Speaker 3: the outcome is never good and ultimately tragic. That's what
- 10:30Speaker 3: happened to Cain. Sin took hold of him, and he
- 10:34Speaker 3: directed his jealousy and anger at the one whose offering
- 10:37Speaker 3: was accepted, to his own brother, whom he killed in
- 10:40Speaker 3: cold blood. Once again, we're reminded that sin always comes
- 10:45Speaker 3: with a price. As he did with Adam and Eve,
- 10:48Speaker 3: God questions Cain and his guilt is revealed. Cain is
- 10:52Speaker 3: cursed to wander in the earth. Sin, separation is always, always,
- 10:58Speaker 3: always the same. When we sin, there is always separation
- 11:03Speaker 3: that happens. From God, which is the worst of all separations,
- 11:07Speaker 3: and then from others. But again, God in his mercy
- 11:10Speaker 3: does not abandon Cain or leave him without protection. God
- 11:14Speaker 3: marks him. not as a sign of the curse, but
- 11:16Speaker 3: as a sign of God's hand of protection. God, thank
- 11:21Speaker 3: you for this story that shows us how sin can
- 11:23Speaker 3: take hold and rule our thoughts, leading us to commit
- 11:26Speaker 3: unthinkable acts. Help us through your spirit to master the
- 11:30Speaker 3: sin that lurks at our doors. And thank you, Lord,
- 11:34Speaker 3: that even when we sin, even through the consequences of
- 11:37Speaker 3: our sin, your mercy and grace remain. In Christ's name, amen.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Thank you for listening to today's Bible in a Year podcast.
